Murder case remanded Brief appearance in Renfrew STEVE NEWMAN steve.newman@metroland.com

Dugald Jamieson, 48, made a brief appearance July 21 at Renfrew provincial court, where visiting Justice Robert Selkirk remanded proceedings to Sept. 8. The case is under a publication ban, so reasons for the remand cannot be described. Crown Attorney John Pepper, in the absence of holidaying Crown Attorney Jason Nicol who is overseeing the case, spoke on behalf of the Crown. Jamieson’s lawyer is Sharon AndersonOlmstead. Carol-Anne Brunet, 54, was found dead in her 236 Hall Avenue apartment in Renfrew about 1 a.m. May 31. Jamieson has been in custody at the Ottawa Carleton Detention Centre since May 31. He is charged with first-degree murder and with breach of probation. No plea has yet been made. Those on hand to watch Wednesday’s court proceedings included Jamieson’s daughter, Stacey, plus members of the Brunet family and friends. Among them were Brunet’s sister, Debbie Davidson; Brunet’s children, Tyler and Stephanie Brunet; and one of Stephanie’s good friends, Amanda Fraser, who was also a close friend of the deceased.

Annex land back to Horton, say Whitton Road landowners STEVE NEWMAN steve.newman@metroland.com

In 1970, some Horton Township land just east of the Town of Renfrew changed hands. It became part of the Town of Renfrew, despite Horton Township’s unsuccessful appeal to the Ontario Municipal Board. Then, in January 2010, substantial area-specific development charges were attached to that Whitton Road property. More recently, these charges have resulted in harsh criticism of the town by property owners Dave La Rocque, Warren La Rocque and Irvin Jamieson. Development charges for the La Rocques’ 35-acre piece of property, if it is developed, amount to $13,282 per acre, or a bill of $464,870. The same charges would apply to Jamieson’s seven acres, which are also located within the northeast servicing area. This area occupies land on both sides of Whitton Road, thus property between Highway 17, Innovation Drive, the railway line and O’Brien Road. The La Rocques, who are better known as co-owners of George Jackson Toyota, say they can’t afford to develop the property because of the new area-

specific fees. The 73-year-old Jamieson, who rents out most of his seven acres for farming, says he would probably like to sell his land in the next five years. But he says the current development charges make any sale unlikely. Meanwhile, both parties have approached Horton council to arrange a meeting of Horton and Renfrew council members and staff to see if arrangements can be made to reannex those properties back to Horton. As of Thursday, July 22, Renfrew clerk Kim Bulmer said a meeting had yet to be scheduled. He suggests there have been delays because of the recent resignation of Chantal Lavigne, the planning committee chair and a non-council member. At recent planning meetings, Coun. Bill Ringrose has been serving as chairman, but has not assumed that official position. When contacted last week, Ringrose said the planning committee didn’t know about Horton’s request. “I would tend to think that if Horton wanted to explore something, we’d certainly find an opportunity to sit down and talk,” said Ringrose. Even so, Ringrose said it’s expensive to bring such services as water and sewer into

such locations as the northeast servicing area. Ringrose also said he wonders why Dave La Rocque didn’t object to the fees during the public consultation process, prior to the adoption of the area-specific development charge bylaw last January. The area-specific development charges were adopted by Renfrew council on the recommendation of a December 2009 report from Watson and Associates. That area of 113.56 acres is predominantly zoned industrial and contains nine parcels of land varying in size from 1.1 to 45.36 acres. Prior to requesting a meeting with the Town of Renfrew, Horton council and staff conducted two meetings in June when the matter was discussed. These included the June 15 planning committee meeting, at which a Ministry of Municipal Affairs municipal service advisor addressed the issue of Jamieson annexing his farm back to Horton. If efforts are unsuccessful to have the properties reannexed back to Horton Township, the property owners say they may take their case to the Ontario Municipal Board. “We’re not there as George Jackson Toyota,” says Dave La

Rocque. “We’re there as private citizens who own a piece of property. “We have a substantial investment there and we walked away from it to Horton (to develop new, expanded offices for Toyota),” he added. “So we have issues here. We’re hoping to develop (the land), but with the kind of administration or council there, it’s not going to happen.” Based on such fees, Warren La Rocque questions if Horton is better suited to deal with “unserviced rural property … We have roots in the area and plans. And now that we’re in Horton, we’d like to do something with our property in Renfrew.” With such high development charges, Dave La Rocque says Renfrew-area owners of commercial property are “not going to be competitive with Arnprior, Petawawa, Pembroke, Horton or any townships that have property that is highway accessible or can be rezoned for commercial activity.” Jamieson, who sold the land to the La Rocques a few years ago, says he agrees with recent comments by Coun. Ringrose that council has been dysfunctional when dealing with local business owners. But he says council

needs a changing of the guard that wouldn’t include Ringrose, since he’s part of the old guard. In June, Ringrose sent a letter to area residents encouraging them to vote for him as mayor in October’s municipal election. One of those letters, addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Jamieson, said he’s been listening to community members and that there seems to be broad agreement on a number of issues. Those issues, said Ringrose, included: “Now is the time for change” and “We need to change how we do business to remove current roadblocks.” On at least that final count, Jamieson and the La Rocques already agree. TOWN COUNCIL AWAITS REQUEST At Renfrew council’s Monday night briefing session, Horton planning committee chair Dave Bennett presented the concerns. He said the concerns are not Horton’s issues “and we will not become further involved, unless you believe there is a role we could all play together to encourage an increase in economic development.” Renfrew council has not received a formal request from its ratepayers – Jamieson and the LaRocques – for the change.

Community of Douglas expected on line soon Rural high-speed expanded because of interest john.carter@metroland.com

Strong high-speed Internet interest in the rural areas of McNabBraeside has prompted Bell Aliant to add to its coverage area. Bruce Parker, project manager for the Rural Connections Broadband project that is extending high-speed coverage into five areas of McNabBraeside and Douglas, updated McNab-Braeside council and introduced tech mentor Des Anderson July 6. Anderson is providing free advice this summer to businesses and residents on how they can best benefit from the availability of highspeed service. “The project is still on time and on budget,” Parker said. “We’re not hearing too many complaints.” High-speed service is being made available to almost 2,000 rural homes in the project area. Parker reported that White Lake, which went on line early this year, has 300 subscribers and Burnstown, which has been on line for just over a month, already has more than 50. Areas serviced earlier are Russett Drive (174 subscribers), Sand Point (133) and Braeside (189). Parker said the work

in the Douglas area is 80 per cent complete and residents there should have access to high-speed by the end of July. The high subscription rates have resulted in additional coverage for residents further along Russet Drive and in the Braeside and White Lake areas, he said. However, there’s not much chance it will be extended to the Goshen/Lochwinnoch area because of the long distance to the closest lines, he told Coun. Jim McGregor. However, Bell does have a High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) program that uses its cell towers to distribute high-speed, Parker said. Residents can access high-speed through a stick or turbo hub, he explained. He advised residents unsure of their status to plug in their phone number on the municipal website’s broadband link to find out what services are available to them. Mayor Mary Campbell said she is pleased to hear that the Deerfield and Lorelei areas are being covered, because of the many requests from those areas. In response to councillors’ questions, Parker said Anderson’s con-

tact information is on the township website or people can phone the municipal office and leave him a message. If he can’t work out people’s problems or answer their questions over the phone, he will make house calls, he said. Parker said Anderson has developed informational material to help new and prospective high-speed customers. A self-help page was linked to the township’s website June 26, he noted. Anderson said his calls have been split about 50-50 so far between business and resident users. Businesses are his first priority, but he did help two seniors first with their hook-up because it fit into his schedule, he said. “I’m very happy to be part of this program,” said Anderson. “There’s a lot of good stuff happening out there ... the response is good. I’m getting busy.” Parker noted the municipalities have received the first check of $300,000 from the Ontario Ministry of Food and Rural Affairs for the $960,000 project, which is supported by a twothirds federal-provincial Rural Connections grant.

Family members say Carol-Anne Brunet was really getting her life back together when her life was taken in late May. Now Dugald Jamieson, 48, of Renfrew is accused of first-degree murder and breach of probation. According to family members, Jamieson and Brunet had known each other for about a dozen years. As difficult as this time is for Brunet family members and friends, they say the community’s response at a July fundraiser was heartwarming. More than $3,100 was raised to pay for some of the funeral expenses for Brunet and her brother, Wayne Popplewell. He died June 4 in an unrelated incident. Unexpected costs alter Greater Madawaska budget JOHN CARTER

john.carter@metroland.com

Greater Madawaska council has tweaked the 2010 township budget to deal with some unexpected expenses. However, the changes in the budget, which was originally approved April 15, do not alter the bottom line for ratepayers. “It doesn’t affect the tax rate,” township CAO Angela Yolkowskie assured finance committee chairman Don Mercer. With the average assessment rising about 12.8 per cent in the township, most property-owners will see a modest increase in their municipal tax bill despite the tax rate dropping one per cent and ex-

penditures falling by $265,000. The township’s operating budget remains at $5.725 million despite the addition of $25,000 to the doctor recruitment campaign, police costs being $21,000 more than expected, emergency work at the Calabogie ball diamond and extra costs for taking over the Cherry Point rest stop. Council agreed to come up with the extra money by reducing several budget items including the sand and salt allocation by $15,000 and loose top road maintenance by $10,000. Coun. Tom Ryan said his public works committee was not happy with the cuts, but agreed it didn’t have much choice. The library budget was dropped from

$43,500 to $39,628, which takes into account an estimated $11,818 in revenues. The budget includes $3,100 to pay off half of a 2009 library deficit of about $7,500. Greater Madawaska Library Board chairman John Allerton says as a result, this year’s budget is “considerably less” than 2009’s allocation, meaning services will have to be temporarily reduced.

Military eyes more trail work in Calabogie area this fall JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com

The soldiers are coming back to Calabogie to work on the area’s trails. Lieutenant Jason Fox of the Ottawabased 33 Combat Regiment visited the area last month with two engineers and a group of local trails enthusiasts to check out potential areas for an exercise in late September or early October. The reservists have already held two training exercises building and extending local trails last winter and in the fall of 2008, Greater Madawaska Coun. John Pratt, Madawaska Nordic Ski Club co-chairman John Parnell and Ross Fergusson of the Madawaska Conservation Authority joined Fox and his assistants in the reconnaissance of both the K&P trail south of Tatty Hill and the Nordic trails near the Peaks. Also participating was Dan Sisty, the chairman of the recently formed Lanark

County Municipal Trails Corporation. Pratt said the Lanark group is seeking to mirror the management plan created for the K&P Trail north to promote more connected snowmobile and trail bike activity on their trails. “The plan for the trail between Renfrew and Calabogie is proving to be a trail-blazer,” said Pratt. After the tour of the local trails, the group briefed Greater Madawaska Reeve Peter Emon on their findings. Pratt said if the project is approved the soldiers would improve and extend trails and build more bridges and lean-to sheds if there is time. ”It’s a great training ground for the reservists,” he said. Pratt explained approval for the project is contingent on receiving a work permit from the Ministry of Natural Resources, access approval from Calabogie Peaks and a letter of support from Greater Madawaska council.

Community activist Marie Buscomb is running for a seat on Greater Madawaska council. Buscomb is the first candidate to file her papers to run for one of two councillor positions in Ward one. “I think we need a new approach to business and tourism, and pride in the community (on council),” she said. Having served on the township’s recreation committee for 20 years, she sees the need for more programs for youth and seniors. “We need to keep them (youth) busy … and provide more options for seniors,” she added. Buscomb would also like to promote more recycling, including providing depots for can and bottle drop-off in high travel areas, especially in the summer. A number of waste management initiatives are needed, as it will continue to be a ma-

jor issue for the next council, she said. Buscomb was born and raised in Calabogie and has been back for 30 years. She has 17 years experience running her own business (the North Star Christmas store) and has been volunteering for more than 20 years in a variety of areas. As well as serving on the recreation committee, she is a member of the Canada Day and Barnet Park Restoration committees. She is also an active member of her church and has been instrumental in organizing many community events. Buscomb has received the Ontario Municipal Recreation Association award for her volunteering. “I plan to work very hard for the ratepayers and will listen to their complaints,” she said. Two other candidates have filed their papers. JR Easton is running for reeve and Coun. Karin Lehnhardt is running again in Ward 3.

Trading eco fees for shell games

Library budget static

s the province moves to remedy the dismal July 1 launch of Stewardship Ontario’s new eco fees, it’s time to talk about accountability, and transparency. Accountability at source and transparency at the end. The beginning is always a good place to start. To a point. The Association of Municipalities of Ontario has stated its belief that waste management costs related to hazardous waste products should continue to be the responsibility of those who create and distribute the products. AMO president Peter Hume says it’s the only way to encourage these businesses to produce less waste, create less toxic products and recycle more. Unless, of course, those same businesses just wrap their increased costs into the sticker price on the shelf. Then who wins? The July 1 launch of eco fees was a communications disaster. No doubt of that. But we must have faith in our friends and neighbours. As with any critical social change – and environmentalism is the ultimate social shift – success will lie in the simple understanding of a very basic concept: do the right thing. Do what is right for today, but moreso what is right for tomorrow. There’s a segment of society that will never change. Life will always be about them, and the centre of their universe leaves no space for the rights of future generations. In short, screw them. But there is another segment that truly wants to change. It wants positive change. It wants to make informed choices. So as much as business and industry must be encouraged to produce less hazardous waste, consumers must be encouraged to consider the products they use. What happened to the good old days when water and vinegar would wash your windows just fine? When did we as a society decide that applying a toxic chemical to melt away dirt was favoured over some firmly-applied elbow grease? The ultimate injustice in this whole environmental maelstrom would be for Ontarians to allow waste diversion costs to be hidden in retail prices or municipal tax bills. Doing so may be politically palatable, but it’s a shell game in a fool’s paradise. An eco fee is a good thing. Consumers must know the true price of environmental choices they make. That, alone, will change buying habits. And changing buying habits will change business.

A

LETTER

You can’t legislate safety

To the editor: As a society we have developed a strategy of using legislation to protect our citizens. We fill our vehicles with belts and bags; load our boats with ropes, whistles, lifejackets, lights; dress our children up in protective gear ‘til they look like gladiators. We use expressions like “Seat belts save lives” or “Wear a helmet, protect your brain.” All these efforts miss the point. These are technological solutions to what are behavioural problems. These are fixes that come into effect once the accident has occurred. None of these solutions prevent the accident. At worst, these bits of technology instill a sense of false confidence that can produce a reckless behaviour. It’s not that seat belts and air bags don’t save lives in an accident rather slower, more attentive driving prevents accidents in the first place. How many people turn off their radio and stop talking when driving at high speed in heavy traffic?

Mercury Mercur y The Renfrew

Brain research is clear on this point. The human brain cannot distinguish between listening and talking on a cell phone or to a passenger – both are equally distractive. It’s not about where your hands are; it’s about what your head is doing. Your brain cannot watch, listen, talk and drive simultaneously and perform these activities at peak efficiency. Some legislation is actually silly. Boaters are required to carry lifejackets/pfds but not wear them. No matter, most fatal boating accidents result from hypothermia, not drowning. Lifejackets don’t prevent that. All the students who died on the Temiskaming canoe trip accident were wearing a lifejacket. They were found in the lake, floating so high some had dry hair. Swimmers, on the other hand, do drown. It’s a leading cause of death among young people. They are not required to wear anything but a swimsuit. See SAFETY, Page 34

To the editor: The 2010 Budget for the Greater Madawaska Public Library has finally been approved and passed in June. In 2009, the Library’s budget was overspent. Council has requested that half of the shortfall be recouped in 2010. As a result, the 2010 budget is considerably less than in 2009. The purpose of this letter is to indicate some of the consequences of a reduced library budget, primarily a temporary reduction of services provided by the library. The 2010 budget restraints will result in: • No summer student employment, which will mean a temporary reduction of administrative library tasks at the busiest time of the year. • No replacement for times when Mrs. Hale is away (vacations, illness, etc.). • A decrease in number of new books purchased. The Library Board has implemented some operational efficiencies designed to decrease certain ancillary activities. Core services will still

Response encouraging

To the editor: It was both encouraging and refreshing to find two excellent letters to the editor in the July 15/10 issue of your newspaper, written by Wayne Troutman and Stephen Helferty, both of which very charitably corrected a letter which had run in the previous issue. This prior letter condoned a lot of very unchristian things including sodomy, abortion, premarital sex, aggressive “sex education” for children.

be met. For example, the library will still normally be open for 20 hours per week except when Mrs. Hale is not available. The outlying areas (Wards 2 and 3) will still be served by the courier to the depots. Access to hi-speed Internet will still be available through the wireless network 24/7. However, a power outage during periods when the library is not staffed will shut down the access, until staff return. We would like to point out that the library budget has not increased for the last four years apart from cost of living allowances. The library in Greater Madawaska is seriously underfunded compared to other municipalities of a similar size. We anticipate that these modifications will be temporary and that the library will eventually return to a more fiscally appropriate funding model. Sincerely, L. I was particularly impressed by the fact that both Wayne Troutman and Stephen Helferty admonished this (I presume young) lady in a most gentle and kindly manner, having joined truth and love together – which is always indispensable. And these two gentlemen did not hide their Catholic lights under a bushel. Kudos to both! ‘Scary’ OLA letter received for information only LUCY HASS

lucy.hass@metroland.com

The Ontario Landowners Association is distributing personal letters to local heads of council that have some councillors concerned. At council’s July 22 regular meeting, Admaston-Bromley Councillor Sandra Crozier described the letter – which was delivered to Mayor RayeAnne Briscoe’s home in an envelope labelled ‘private and confidential’ – as “just too scary.” The letter outlines work by the OLA on Crown land patent grants – a process to prevent government agencies from trespassing on private property. Crozier said she read the letter about four times to make sense of it. “I do agree individuals have rights,” she said. “But there is such a thing as the common good.” She noted, within the letter, many “musts”, “wills” and “have tos.” “To me, this letter is a little frightening,” she said. She suggested that restricted access could hamper law and order when it comes to such criminal offenses as domestic abuse and the harvesting of il-

legal drugs. She said the current system “seems to be working very, very well” and recommended the letter be accepted as an information-only item. Council members Bob Dick and Dirk Rook agreed. But “through time, I see this coming back,” Rook said. The correspondence even caught Councillor Jack Kelly – who is an active property rights proponent – off guard. “I didn’t know anything about this letter coming through,” said Kelly, who said the letter may have “overstepped” and admitted that sometimes members of the OLA “like to throw their weight around.” “I don’t know where they’re coming from on this,” Kelly said. Kelly recently wrote a long and detailed letter to The Renfrew Mercury promoting the letters patent campaign. He told his fellow council members that historic patents, many of which he has seen since the OLA Crown patents awareness campaign began, legally ensure that “everything on your property is yours forever.”

The OLA held a meeting in Eganville recently on the patents issue. More meetings are expected to be held in other communities to inform the public about their property rights. The OLA letter advises council that any violation of the Crown Land Patent Act “will be met with as much force as necessary to affect our purpose of upholding and enforcing those laws, rights and privileges.” It also says “the onus is now on the recipient” (Admaston-Bromley Mayor Briscoe) to inform council and staff of the issue. The letter contained no personal signature, nor contact information, but simply closed “Ontario Landowners Association, Without Prejudice.” Crozier introduced the OLA letter to council as chair of the township’s planning committee. “This is just too scary. It’s over the top,” said Crozier. Mayor Briscoe closed the discussion by stressing that municipal law is based on the common good of the community. When it comes to municipal operations in the Township of AdmastonBromley, the status quo will remain.

Admaston-Bromley bylaw latest step in health village doctor recruitment LUCY HASS lucy.hass@metroland.com

Admaston-Bromley council has signed a bylaw to enter into a formal agreement with its Renfrew, Horton and Greater Madawaska neighbours for the new Health Village doctor recruitment effort. Renfrew Mayor Sandi Heins, who chairs the health

village committee, attended township council’s July 22 meeting to accept the bylaw. Admaston-Bromley Mayor Raye-Anne Briscoe reported on a “wonderfully successful” meeting where retired Renfrew County CEO was hired. “We’re fortunate to get that kind of leadership at the get-go,” she said. Renfrew council passed

a similar bylaw at a special council session Monday night. OTTAWA RIVER DESIGNATION Admaston-Bromley contines to support efforts to secure heritage desgination for the Ottawa River. “There’s absolutely no reason why this designation is not in place,” said Mayor

Raye-Anne Briscoe. “That is the river that opened up Canada. That was the gateway,” the mayor said. Renfrew County council has been actively pursuing the designation. “You can’t go ahead if you don’t know where you’ve been,” Mayor Briscoe said. “That’s one old saw, but it works.”

Liberal tour to make Aug. 9 stop at at Tabbert family farm corn roast Local Liberal candidate Christine Tabbert has confirmed that Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff will visit Renfrew County on Monday, Aug. 9. The corn roast at Tabbert’s family farm near Pembroke on Aug. 9 is part of the Liberal Express cross-country summer tour. Michael Ignatieff and the Liberal Team will attend the event in Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke. “I am looking forward to welcoming Mr. Ignatieff and other Liberal colleagues to my home in Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, and as part of a farm family, I’m looking forward to showcasing locally grown produce at this event,” said Tabbert. “The Liberal Party of Canada is committed to easing the burden on rural Canadians and improving their quality of life,” the candidate said. “Liberals are working hard this summer to show all Canadians why we’re the only progressive, compassionate and responsible alternative to the Conservatives.” This summer, the Liberal Express is bringing Michael Ignatieff and the Liberal Team to every province and territory to present the clear Liberal alternative. A recent news release says Liberals will pay down the deficit and create jobs by investing in learning and innovation, caring for our families, and restoring Canadian global leadership – compared to

Stephen Harper’s G20 boondoggle spending, unaccountable government, and plan to add $6 billion in tax cuts for profitable corporations to his record $54 billion deficit. The Liberal Express Summer Tour Corn Roast will be held at Christine Tabbert’s home, Sunny Hillcrest Farm on Aug. 9 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The farm is located at 1355 Forest Lea Road in Laurentian Valley near Pembroke. “The fare will include fresh corn, sausages and buns and hot dogs and pop and a chance to meet and chat with Mr. Ignatieff in an informal and fun setting,” says a news release from the Liberal riding association. “This a unique venue for Renfrew County people to interact directly with the Leader so he can appreciate us and our issues as well as giving us a chance to better know him and what he stands for. Everyone is most welcome,” says local Liberal president Gail Richardson. Tickets to cover expenses are $10, with no charges for children under 12 years of age. CORMAC PILGRIMAGE

Faithful gather under sunny skies at Shrine to St. Ann in Cormac LUCY HASS

lucy.hass@metroland.com

A fresh summer breeze blew through the towering pines Sunday afternoon as Christians gathered under sunny skies at Cormac for the healing mass of the 2010 Pilgrimage to the Shrine of St. Ann. The mass marked the end of four days of celebration and prayer, an event described as a beautiful act of public faith. In his sermon, celebrant and homilist Bishop Matthew Ustrzycki reflected on the challenge to take up one’s cross, whether it be physical, emotional or spiritual. He noted two basic affirmations. One – suffering is real and it is the lot

of all humanity, without exception. Two – suffering does not have the last word in the human experience. “We do not believe in a vague God. We believe in a God with a heart,” he told the congregation. “The Lord Jesus identifies with each and every one of us.” “When you’re crying, he’s crying with you. That’s the kind of God you and I believe in,” he said. Bishop Ustrzycki said the simple loving words and acts of people show the love of God, and people are serving Christ when serving others. He also spoke of how important it is that we pray for each other, that we help to carry each other’s crosses. Sunday’s healing service was celebrated by Bishop Matthew Ustrzycki, at left, and Bishop Michael Mulhall. The theme of this year’s pilgrimage was a question posed in the 6th chapter of St. John’s gospel – To whom shall we go? Mercury photos by Lucy Hass

A six-horse hitch, driven by Renfrew-based trainer Ray McLaughlin, normally a regular at the Almonte Fair, makes its way around the stadium during the six-horse hitch world championships at the Calgary Stampede earlier this month.

Heavy horses make big impact on Calgary Stampede DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com

A number of familiar faces in the heavy horse shows at the Almonte Fair were absent this year, opting instead to take part in the biggest country fair in all of Canada, the Calgary Stampede. Spencer Ross, the heavy horses coordinator for the Almonte Fair, confirmed that at least three entries who attended the fair “religiously,” had been offered a chance to perform and compete on the Prairies. One area horse trainer returned to the Ottawa Valley with a fair amount of prize hardware from out west. “We did real well,” said Ray McLaughlin, whose farm is in Hayley Station, west of Renfrew. “We had a hell of a show…We won the best six and eight horse hitch award in the parade.” His horses also won first place in the Ladies Cart class, and second place in the four-horse hitch in the Clydesdale division. The horses also took first in the unicorn class as well as the sixhorse hitch in the Clydesdale division. To make matters better, the team placed third in the sixhorse hitch world competition. McLaughlin’s horses also won a trophy for participating in the opening parade. Not bad for a trainer who was competing at the Calgary Stampede for the first time. “We went out before, but we never competed,” said McLaughlin. The pace did not slow down for McLaughlin and his horses after the competitions were over, when they were asked to conduct six-horse hitch demonstrations for the remainder of the Stampede. “After the horse show is over, you meet a whole other crowd,”

McLaughlin said. “You get tons of people who have never touched a horse before.” McLaughlin said he was sad to skip the Almonte Fair this year, but he could not miss this opportunity. “We thought we’d try that (the Stampede.) It’s a whole new adventure for us,” said McLaughlin, who ventured that he might return to Alberta next year if he is asked. While they were many miles from home, they did not have a chance to get homesick. “We met lots of nice people, a lot of them from the Ottawa Valley,” said McLaughlin. McLaughlin made sure that he got the horses to Alberta early, before the Stampede, to get them acclimatized to the higher elevations, stopping off in Thunder Bay and Vernon, Man. “They’re athletes. You try to treat them like that,” said McLaughlin. While the horses were the star of the show, McLaughlin wasn’t able to look after all of those horses on his own, and had to call on experienced help from further down the Valley. “It was actually a working trip for us,” said Almonte resident Joy Drynan, who travelled to Alberta with McLaughlin to help him look after the horses. “You don’t get time to go and see a whole lot that you’d like to see. (But) we saw some of the chuck wagon races.” While she is now retired, she is still very much in demand for her horse-handling skills. “We retired and then everybody wants you to help them,” Drynan said. This was not Drynan’s first time out to Alberta to compete with horses. “We took our own hitch out in 1983,” she said, followed up by a trip in 2002.

SPORTS

Target: 40 before 40 STEVE NEWMAN

steve.newman@metroland.com

Weight loss is seldom an easy task, but Renfrew resident John Fuller Jr. hopes to simplify the process with his entry in the Stridea Showcase contest. Stride Gum’s contest, for Canadian residents, will produce five winners. Winners will be based on the voting public’s reaction to entries, and produce $10,000 in prizes from the sugarless-gum company. Fuller’s submission is to complete 40 triathlon or running events within one calendar year prior to his 40th birthday. Fuller would officially start that year once he turns 39 on Dec. 23, 2010. A huge goal behind the project is weight loss. Once weighing 351 pounds, Fuller is back on the weight-loss trail. In his most recent weight-loss campaign, he has lost 107 pounds since Christmas to drop to 244. He’d like to drop another 45, to reach a body weight of 199.

SUCCESSFUL WALK WITH AND FOR A FRIEND Garry Inglis cuts the ribbon to officially start a walk in his honour at Ma-Te-Way Park July 8. Because of the 36 Celsius heat, the one-mile walk was moved inside the MaTe-Way Activity Centre. The walk, put on by the Mental Health Literacy Class, raised $1,253.50 for an automatic door opener at Inglis’s apartment. The literacy class thanked Inglis’s family, friends and the community for their support by showing “our support for an individual who has always been there for us. Garry is a hard worker and never gives up. Thank you for coming out.” Mercury photo by Peter Clark

WEIGHT OUT OF SIGHT Whatever weight he reaches, he says he’ll do it by eating better and exercise that includes three cycles and three runs per week. When he headed off to college several years ago, he says his weight ballooned out of sight. “My landlady fed me like two guys, and soon enough I was two guys,” he says of his studies in North Bay. “It was all my fault, but things conspired (to keep my weight high).” Years later, he says he grew “tired of being fat.” Not known for being an athlete, he still likes the feeling of participating in competitive triathlon and running races. This summer, his activities have included two triathlons, in Barry’s Bay and Ottawa, and the Ottawa Half Marathon in 2:08. He says his best triathlon was a 57th-place finish at the Graham Beasley Memorial duathlon-triathlon. If he tackles the 40-races-in-one-year goal, he says he will compete in races ranging from five kilometres to the half Ironman of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile cycle and 13.1-mile run. A short-term goal is to break three hours in the half-Ironman after a recent time just under 3:01 despite suffering a bee sting en route. More recently, Fuller took a tumble off

his bike, after hitting the gravel shoulder along River Road, just outside Renfrew. He emerged with cuts on his nose and chin, but says that’s just part of his learning curve while riding with special triathlon handle bars. Back in 2007 he says he lost 87 pounds, but then regained 96 pounds after he stopped exercising and returned to old and bad eating habits. Determined not to repeat history, he encourages others to support his entry in the Big Stridea contest. Visit www.bigstridea.ca/gallery to find out more about the contest and, if desired, to vote for Fuller’s submission. Type in ‘Strideaman’ to find his submission of ‘Strideaman goes for 40 before turning 40’. The voting deadline is Aug. 9.

From the Ladies Tee

Thanks to the sponsorship of Tracey’s Dairy, Renfrew Chrysler and Frank’s Building Supply, Christmas came to the Renfrew Golf Club on Tuesday, July 20. The ladies had their second annual Christmas in July fun night, and 63 ladies came out decked in red, green, or Christmas crazy outfits. The weather was wonderful, warm and sunny, and everyone had lots of fun playing a scramble format. On each hole was a goofy question which the team had to answer. They were all Christmas related, for instance, “Which song was originally written for Thanksgiving?” The answer was “Jingle Bells.” If the team got the correct answer, they were entitled to take a stroke off their score for that hole. Our new kitchen manager, Jamie Paulen, pulled out all the stops for a wonderful Christmas dinner.

Many thanks to Sue Ringrose, who decorated the dining room with Christmas cheer; Faye Warren, who was a big help in every way, from registration to donation of some prizes; Kelley Lemenchick who quarterbacked the wrapping of 60plus prizes; and Karen Audette, who also kindly donated some prizes. Fun nights are a great way to experience the fun of playing golf, and a scramble format is a non-stress way to play. Everyone hits a drive, and then you go to the best shot, and everyone hits from there. Therefore, you don’t have to be a good golfer to come out and have fun. There were 30 ladies on Tuesday who did not belong to the golf club, and many of them were non-golfers. We are hoping to have a large turnout for our fun night on Aug. 24. It is a ‘Golf Fore the Cure’ Tournament, with proceeds going to breast cancer research. If you are interested in playing, please call Kim McDonald, our club captain, at 613-432-8496. So, come join us for that evening, try golfing, have some laughs, and enjoy a superb dinner. See you there.

Last chance for licences before fall hunting season begins The Renfrew Fish and Game Club is sponsoring last-chance hunter safety and Canadian firearms safety courses in August. The dates for the combined Renfrew courses are Aug. 17,18,19 and 24,25,26, 2010 from 5 to 9 p.m. each night. The 20-hour combined course can be taken by anyone 12 years and older.

The course must be taken by anyone wishing to get his or her first hunting version of their Outdoors Card. The course will also provide students with the criteria to obtain their Possession and Acquisition Firearms Licence. Also available will be the opportunity for anyone 18 years of age or older to challenge the Federal Firearms Test to

obtain their Possession and Acquisition Licence ( PAL ). Instructor Kevin White says this will be the last course for students to obtain their Outdoors Card and Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) by this fall’s hunting season. Processing of the PAL takes about two months before students have licences in their hands. With sum-

mer weekends at a premium for a lot of people, there has been a demand to have a course on weeknights only. The course will run for five nights, with the sixth night set aside for the required testing. The course fee of $195 includes manuals and exams. For more information, or to register, call White at 613-432-5192 .

Wolves tryouts on the horizon

U16 premier soccer girls having a fine season LARRY MCHENRY OV girls premier soccer

Eastern Ontario District Soccer Association’s under-16 Ottawa Valley Girls premier team has had a stellar year so far. To date, the team’s record is five wins, four ties and five losses in league and tournament play. This includes a silver medal from the final of the Nepean Hotspurs tournament in June and a semi-final birth at Kingston this month. The squad features players from every corner of the Ottawa Valley, including Combermere, Pembroke, Petawawa, Arnprior, Cobden, Opeongo and Renfrew. Coached by Larry McHenry, Tony Kruegar and Blake McHenry, the team is sponsored by Arnprior soccer and supported by the other Ottawa Valley soccer clubs. Travel is not an issue with this great group of parents and players. We play home games in Arnprior and practice centrally in Renfrew. Our manager, Kim McGrath, has done an exceptional job keeping us in line and well organized.

So far this year we have two players among the top 15 per cent in league scoring – Kristina Rosener and Robyn Dyer. Exceptional performances have come from the entire team as a whole, while special mention goes to Karly Ziebarth, Kelsey Chaplin, Hannah Kruegar and Saddie and Hollie Riopelle. Rachel Boersma, Shelby Neff, and Carrisa Rathwell and Julie Gaddess have developed a strong supporting back four, as have Cheryl McCullough and Shayla Bertrand. Our attacking and midfields – Carly McHenry, Brittany Godin, the Riopelles, Sarah McGrath and Emily Shames – have really added attacking depth to our team. Lauren Parcher from Combermere has developed into a fantastic keeper with a little mean streak that strikes fear into attackers. Special mention goes out to Ashley Hume. She started the season at the Icebreaker tournament in Ottawa, but a hard sliding tackle produced a seasonending injury.

The start of training camp for the 2010-11 edition of the Renfrew Junior B Timberwolves is less than four weeks away. With coach Cal Smith on the bench for his first season at the helm, opening camp sessions

are slated for Tuesday through Thursday, Aug. 24, 25 and 26 from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre. Wolves general manager Brent Sylvester can be reached for more details at 613-432-7572.

Blok wheels to first Formula 1600 victory

After turning just 16 years of age in April, Beachburg native Nathan Blok won his first race in Formula 1600 during the 10th annual Ted Powell Memorial Race Weekend at Calabogie Motor Speedway this past Sunday. The win has propelled Blok, not only the lead in the Rookie Standings, but also the overall first place position in the inaugural Inter-Provincial Series. Blok qualified for Sunday’s race in fourth position of 16 drivers, only 0.213 seconds off the pole position. On corner one, Blok made a pass to take third position while staying close to the first and second cars.

On lap 13, the second-place car attempted to make a pass on the leader and the two cars collided. Blok avoided the wreck and moved into first place, which he held for the last five laps while pulling away from the rest of the field. He crossed the finish line 1.884 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. Blok was ecstatic after the race, hugging friends, family and sponsors who had attended. Blok attributed his success to his team, Mortimer Racing and to the support of his family and sponsors. “The hard work of my team has made this win possible for me today and I am extremely thankful to them and to my

family and sponsors who have enabled me to be in a Formula 1600,” he said. Blok follows in the footsteps of another Canadian who also won his first Formula 1600 race at the tender age of 16, current Indy Car driver Paul Tracy. Formula 1600 also helped develop many race car drivers like former Formula One World Champions Michael Schumacher, Jenson Button, Mika Hakkinen and the late Ayrton Senna. Blok’s next race will be held at a popular event amongst Canadian race fans, the Nathan Blok, centre, celebrates at the top of Trois-Rivieres Grand Prix Aug. 14 and 15. the Calabogie MotorSports podium.

McDougall Mill Museum

This August will be a great time to pay a visit to the McDougall Mill Museum with two weeks of free admissions. The week of Aug. 8 to 14 is Children’s Week, where all chil-

belonged to Livingstone. Some of this collection includes a polar bear skin that Livingstone shot at Pond Inlet, his moose hide parka, as well as other arctic crafts that Livingstone brought south and are now on display here. Also featured with our First Nations display is our Canadian wildlife display where some of our featured items include a moose jaw bone, beaver skulls, a spiral narwhal tusk, musk ox

horns and more. On a final note we have been removing the carpets from the museum floor, in order to display the authentic mill floorboards and trapdoors beneath. The staff here at the McDougall Mill Museum invites you to come explore Native and Northern cultures through our displays and of course to browse our other displays and find whatever sparks your interest. We hope to see you soon!

The Renfrew Mercury - July 29, 2010

The recent retirement announcements of two local family physicians are expected to increase the demand for care at the Renfrew Victoria Hospital emergency department. “These changes inevitably mean that patients are going to be left without a family doctor,” says Dr. Max Buxton, head of the hospital’s emergency department. “When these people need care, they are likely to come to the hospital emergency department for the medical attention they require.” To help manage the anticipated pressure on its emergency department, the RVH health care team is asking everyone to cooperate and assist in using our community’s health care resources responsibly. The following tips can help maintain quality care at our hospital: 1. Seek knowledgeable advice. If you are not sure you require emergency care, call Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000 for free access to registered nurses who can advise you on health-related questions.

Telehealth Ontario is a service provided by the province that operates seven days a week, 24 hours a day. It is a reliable source of information. 2. Make your doctor your first source of information. If you have a family doctor, keep yourself informed about their vacation schedules, regular office hours and any seasonal changes in their schedules. When you visit your doctor, make sure your prescription renewals are up-to-date and sufficient until your next appointment. 3. Be patient. If you do need to visit the emergency department for non-urgent care, be prepared to wait. Visitors to the emergency department are assessed based on their medical needs. If you do not require urgent care, you may be expected to wait while the health care team attends to more pressing needs of other patients. In many hospitals in Ontario, emergency wait times extend to several hours. Please be assured that we

will monitor your needs and do our best to care for everyone in a timely, efficient and thorough manner. 4. Arrive prepared. When you come to the hospital, make sure you have your Ontario Health (OHIP) card with you. If you have a blue hospital card, please have it ready too. These cards allow our staff to access your information and perform the appropriate paperwork to efficiently enter you into the system. 5. Keep us informed. Please bring your current medications with you when you come to the emergency department. This includes both prescription and nonprescription drugs such as vitamins and herbal remedies. These medications may play an important role in helping us identify your problem, and also in safely treating you.

6. Don’t be shy. The more you cooperate in providing us with a complete medical history, the better we can care for you. Keep a list of your allergies with your health card, and provide it to us whenever you come for care. Answer our questions honestly and fully when we ask about your past sicknesses and treatments. Missing pieces make a puzzle much more difficult, timeconsuming and frustrating to solve! 7. Take care of yourself and your loved ones. The best way to reduce pressure on our emergency team is to eliminate unnecessary visits. Whatever activity you choose, think through the consequences ahead of time, avoid unnecessary risks, and encourage the people you love to have fun responsibly. We’ll all be the better for it!

Staff in the RVH emergency department are preparing for busier times and asking for the public’s help to keep things running as smoothly as possible. 367963

Each week we feature animals from the Arnprior and District Humane Society that are up for adoption.

3711 Zeek Can you provide a ‘forever family’ for this wonderful companion? Zeek was brought to the shelter in May after his owner was no longer able to look after him. He is a very handsome brown, one-and-a-half-year-old male tabby with white markings. Zeek, who has been neutered, is a quiet cat. He enjoys attention but is not demanding. Zeek loves to be petted and brushed but is not fond of being picked up and carried. Zeek is good with other cats.

Mercury Mercur y The Renfrew

# 3149 Ripley Ripley is a special cat who is sure to keep his new family entertained. He has been at the shelter for almost two years after he was brought in as a stray. Ripley is a very handsome, seven-yearold neutered male He is an active, curious, outgoing cat who likes to explore. Ripley can be very affectionate - he loves to climb onto your shoulders and ride around. However, if he is not in the mood for attention he will let you know. He has lots of personality and can be quite silly. He likes to burrow under the blankets in the cat beds and poke his face out. He would be best suited in an adult-only home where he is the only pet. Supplies the shelter needs: bleach, cat beds, wild bird seed and canned kitten food.

JULY/AUGUST BOTTLE DRIVE: Empties Can Fill Bellies fundraising event. Drop your beer, wine and liquor empties at the shelter 490 Didak Dr., Arnprior, and you’ll be helping all the animals in our care. Proceeds help with expenses such as vaccinations, veterinary care, spay and neuter surgery. You can call the Arnprior and District Humane Society at 613-623-0916 between noon and 5 p.m Monday to Saturday or visit www.arnpriorhumanesociety.ca

NATURE

Ruby-throated Hummingbird comes to feed Velma Durant took the photograph of this male hummer when he came to get some nourishment at her feeder. The photo shows very clearly the iridescent colour in the feathers at his throat. It is not unusual to see orange, red, black, blue and green in the feathers depending on the angle of the sun when it strikes the pigment in the feathers. At this time of year and when the weather is hot and dry all birds, especially hummers require extra moisture for drinking and bathing. The sugar water should be one part sugar and three parts water. Flowers, both wild and domestic offer a great deal of nectar and the hummingbirds help pollinate the blossoms. Rather than bathe, hummers like to fly back and forth through the lawn sprinkler. HAY BALES PROVIDE A PERCH We received a call from Norman Eady and he has seen several hawks hunting from the large round hay bales. The young hawks although able to fly are not very skillful in catching their own food and still depend on their parents for much of their diet. The young are almost as big as the adults and require large amounts of food to grow healthy bodies and full plumage. The parents therefore must hunt continually and the large bales offer a great vantage point to search for small mammals in the hay fields. Red-tailed Hawk, Northern Harrier, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Cooper’ Hawk, American Kestrel all are known to do their hunting from the bales. For us it is a

JIM FERGUSON SCENE FROM THE HAWK’S EYE great opportunity to observe the hunting habits of these birds of prey. The early evening is the best time of day to observe them usually from 4:30 p.m. on. SOMETHING IS MISSING This is the time of year when our birds begin their fall molt and the first signs of the molt are missing wing and tail feathers. After the nesting season all birds, especially the females, must replace worn out and damaged plumage if they are to be ready for the fall migration. Replacing feathers requires and great deal of food energy. Minerals, protein and fat that are found in insects, berries and nuts are needed in large amounts. Vultures, crows, ravens, harriers and hawks all must move from place to place to find food and therefore do not loose all of their flight feathers at the same time. Smaller birds that feed on the ground are able to hide in dense cover away from predators in areas where food is plentiful, marshes, for example, until their molt is complete. For the next two or three weeks many of our birds will disappear to places where they can molt without fear of predators and where food is abundant.

This photograph of a male Ruby-throated Hummingbird was taken by Velma Durant at her cottage on the Ottawa River. SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT We received a letter from David Groves who described a situation where a male Red-winged Blackbird mated with a smaller bird of a different species. He wondered if this behaviour was common or even possible. We were puzzled by the behaviour as well but lately research has indicated some unusual results on the topic. In Doctor Frank B. Gill’s book Ornithology he states that “forced mating or avian rape is a common occurrence among many species.” Research by several ornithologists revealed that the proportion of chicks sired through extra pair mating may be 30 to 40 percent in broods of Indigo Buntings and White-crowned Sparrows. This percentage rose to 50 percent or more in some Tree Swallow populations. Since

Red-winged Blackbird males are very territorial and any female regardless of species that ventures into his territory is considered a possible mate. Whether there would be offspring from such a mating is not known. It has been found that most blackbird broods contain chicks fathered by neighbours. SAFFLOWER SEED Ron and Sybil Ferguson have found that feeding safflower seed has attracted families of Purple Finches and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and that jays, grackles and blackbirds will not eat it, and stay away. The seed is available at most area outlets. Enjoy your birding. Ila and Jim Ferguson, 5313 River Road, R.R. 5, Renfrew, Ontario. K7V 3Z8 Phone 613-432-2738 or email jamesh@nrtco.net.

A look at the crazy, wacky economics of farming solar power Last year the Ontario government announced the Green Energy Act and said that if folks put a solar system on their property to make electricity, property owners could sell it for 80.2 cents per kilowatt hour. It sounded crazy and wacky to me. How could folks pay 6 to 7 cents per kilowatt hour for electricity used and be paid 80 cents for making solar electricity? Something wasn’t right. To top it all off, the Ontario government estimated that electricity rates would increase by only one per cent. Sure! In March, I was surprised that 10 alternative energy dealers had exhibits at the Ottawa Valley Farm Show in Ottawa. Solar was the main interest. One company, just established in January, worked all night before the opening day of the farm show installing a solar panel display at their outside exhibit. The solar panels were high up on a thick steel post – probably 30 feet up. A booth on solar inside the building said they expected to do 150 installations this year. The outside solar exhibit had everything on display one needed to tie the electricity produced onto the power grid. I learned a lot at the booth listening to farmers who were interested in harvesting solar power. One old guy with a walker asked questions and debated the salesman about how he could make the most of an investment if he put solar panels on his shed. I’m guessing the old man was

At his age it didn’t make sense. He did know what he was talking about as he argued and debated the salesman on hardware he could use to sell electricity onto the power grid. JOHN CARTER

john.carter@metroland.com

Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant will work with the National Farmers Union (NFU) to see if it is feasible to place ex-convicts on Valley farms, not convicts still serving their time, her office said Monday. In a release last week, Gallant did not suggest placing convicts on farms as indicated in last week’s Renfrew Mercury.

Instead, she agreed to work with the farm community to provide rehabilitation opportunities for ex-convicts with prison farm experience, explained her executive assistant Malcolm Montgomery. The offer was made in response to NFU concerns about the federal government’s phasing out of prison farms. Montgomery explained that giving convicts training on prison farms only makes sense if there are jobs on farms for them after they are released. Unfortu-

nately, those jobs haven’t been materializing, he said. He noted Gallant had pointed out that “in order for the prison farms to remain open to provide marketable skills to convicts who have paid their debt to society, employment opportunities must be available.” Rehabilitation of criminals and their re-integration into society is an issue in which the public shares some responsibility, Montgomery said, noting govern-

ments can’t be expected to provide all the solutions. If NFU members think farming experience is a good way to achieve that goal, they should come up with a proposal and Gallant will work with them to try to make it happen, he added. However, she agrees with Renfrew County NFU president Dave Mackay that farmers don’t have the resources or training to deal with convicts still serving their time, he said.

FAIRGROUND FENCE STRUCK BY HIGH WIND: In a storm of wind, hail and rain on Sunday afternoon several sections of fence on the Coumbes Street boundary of Renfrew Exhibition grounds were blown down. Posts which had become rotten in the ground snapped and portions of the high board fence fell to the ground. Large signs nearby erected more recently remained standing. Branches of trees on Coumbes Street were broken off and in one case a pole carrying wires fell down. No one was hurt. For a while electric light and power services were out orf commission. The storm was a most peculiar one, because confined almost wholly to Coumbes Street.

COMMUNITY

Nine Greater Madawaska Township residents receive Community Builder awards john.carter@metroland.com

The considerable volunteer contributions of four Calabogie area residents were recognized as the township kicked off the Calabogie Canada Day festivities by presenting its annual Community Builder awards. Greater Madawaska Reeve Peter Emon presented the Ward one awards to Dave Howell, Duane Clouthier, and John and Marjorie Watts. Later at Canada Day celebrations in the DACA Centre, Emon presented Community Builder awards for the Brougham Ward to Bob Coulterman, Mary Coulterman and Don Rogers. On Saturday, Coun. Karin Lehnhardt presented the awards for the Griffith and Ma-

tawatchan Ward to Bill Graham and Garry Ferguson. At the Calabogie ceremony, Emon praised the Watts’ for their involvement in many facets of community life. They are tireless volunteers for their church, the Calabogie seniors group and the business association, he said. “They never say no,” said Emon, noting the couple has been instrumental in organizing a variety of special events from family fun days to the village’s Canada Day celebration. “They’re always quick to offer their time and labour.” He said the Watts’ also played a key role in reviving and improving the Calabogie Remembrance ceremony. “We’re fortunate they’ve contributed so

much,” he said. Marjorie Watts, in turn, thanked the community for supporting their efforts. “You’re only as good as the people behind you,” she said. Emon applauded Howell’s long-time efforts in creating and maintaining cross-country ski trails in the Peaks area. Also an avid downhill skier and member of the ski patrol for many years, Howell worked behind the scenes quietly and sometimes almost single-handedly on the trail system that has become so popular, he said. Emon said cross-country skiers are benefitting from Howell’s countless hours of work on the trails. He did it not for recognition but for the love of the sport, he added.

Howell thanked the many new members of the Madawaska Nordic Cross-Country Ski Club and those who served with him on the ski patrol. Clouthier was recognized for his many contributions to minor ball and minor hockey in the community. Emon said he has taken on a multitude of tasks to ensure both groups survive, from organizing registrations to raising money for equipment. “We’re very fortunate to have him in our community.” He said Clouthier is a prime example of the type of unassuming person doing unheralded volunteer work that the township was looking to recognize when the Community Builder Awards were created a couple of years ago.

Taking part in the presentation of Greater Madawaska Community Builder awards for Ward one (Bagot and Blythfield), from left, are township public services committee chairman John Pratt, Dave Howell, Marjorie and John Watts, Reeve Peter Emon, and Lisa and Brett Clouthier, accepting for their husband and father Duane Clouthier. Mercury photo by John Carter

As Clouthier was at work on Canada Day, his award was accepted by his wife Lisa and son Brett. In Brougham, the two Coultermans were honoured for their work with the Dacre and Area Recreation Association and other community groups in the Dacre-Mt. St. Patrick area. Rogers was recognized for his community work, particularly with the township’s trails committee. In Griffith and Matawatchan, Graham and Ferguson were recognized for their work at the Matawatchan Hall and Market, as well as their many contributions to preserving the history of the area through research and articles in the Madawaska Highlander.

LETTER

Safety

Continued from Page 6 There are solutions. A wetsuit will prevent you from sinking and will keep you warm for hours in the water without any ill effects. It might make an interesting judgement call for the OPP marine unit to pull up to a craft with all occupants wearing wetsuits but not have a lifejacket on board. They would have the best technological solution but are violating an ill-conceived law. The helmet law is a weird one. Some types of helmets require rigorous testing i.e. motorcycle, horseback riding; others not so much in cycling and kayaking. One important consideration is the helmet’s basic structure which is compromised as it absorbs the energy of impact, just as vehicles crumple in a crash. The difference is in the design. The outer shell develops stress fractures which are microscopic and accumulate with each impact but do not show. How many youngsters toss their helmets

CORRECTION A letter to the editor on the Ontario Power Authority rate review also contained an error. A two-year gover nment engagement encourages citizens to participate in a 20-year contract, not two-year contract. The Mercury apologizes for the error.

onto the floor? Some equestrian helmet manufacturers will replace a helmet which was involved in an accident, knowing that the energy-absorbing capacity is diminished, if you return it with a description of the accident. Hence it is quite possible your helmet looks okay but is actually quite useless, and if you wear it you are obeying the law but it won’t protect you. Point being, this summer there will be a lot of people who will be in compliance of the law but will be relying on inadequate or compromised equipment to save them from injury. There is a world of difference between preventing accidents and surviving them. The way to prevent serious accidents is good judgement combined with adequate skill. This will go a lot further than relying on some illconceived legislation and questionable equipment. The slogan for Renfrew’s OPP sign board should read, “Good Judgement and Adequate Skills Save Lives” or as my Dad would say, “Use your brain before you break it.| Joe Schwartz Douglas

April Verch joins Stone Fence Concert Series Aug. 11 When April Verch performs, the first thing that strikes you is the pure energy that infuses her fiddle playing and stepdancing. When you listen to her though, what draws you in are more subtle things — her pure voice, the finely detailed elegance of her fiddle phrasing and the depth of a repertoire that ranges through material from bluegrass to Brazilian to Celtic, from a jaunty Canadian folksong to a poignant contemporary ballad. Verch’s recent 2010 Olympic performance during the opening ceremony in Vancouver confirms her status as one of the top female virtuoso fiddlers in the roots music genre. “It was so exciting and such an honor to be included,” says Verch. “It’s an experience I’ll never forget.” Verch performs in the Stone Fence Theatre Summer Concert Series Wednesday, Aug. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Eagle’s Nest in the Eganville Community Arena. Verch recorded her first two self-released albums and was touring full time by the time she finished high school. She studied at Boston’s Berklee College of Music and simultaneously captured two fiddling

championships – Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Champion and Canadian Open Fiddle Champion. Between 2001 and 2006 Verch recorded three albums with Rounder Records, including the JUNO Nominated Verchuosity, and working with Bruce Molsky and Dirk Powell as producers on the latter two recordings with the label. Her newest recording, Steal the Blue (Slab Town Records, 2008), is her seventh and highlights her soulful, “captivating” (Toronto Star) vocals. The April Verch Band consists of April at the helm and world-class musicians Clay Ross on guitar and Cody Walters on upright-electric bass and banjo. They deliver richly textured traditional roots tunes, bluegrass and newgrass melodies, jazzinfluenced compositions, and country music. The April Verch Band tours across Canada, the United States, the U.K., Europe and just recently wrapped a 6 week debut tour of Australia. They have established a reputation as consummate performers with boundless energy on stage that inevitably brings au-

diences to their feet. Audiences may also have also seen Verch perform with Bowfire, an international touring production featuring top virtuoso violinists and fiddlers from across North America. Verch is a unique performer, whether it’s winning over audiences at an internationally acclaimed festival or demonstrating sheer virtuosity at workshops and music camps. But nothing pleases her like performing in the Ottawa Valley. “I love to tour and performing is my passion. I am lucky to be able to make a living doing what I absolutely love, and especially excited to return home and perform for the Stone Fence Theatre this summer,” she said from her Minnesota tour in June. “They are doing wonderful things in support of live music and theatre here in the Valley and I’m honoured to be a part of their series and to share my band and my music with audiences here at home!” Tickets for the Verch show are $25, plus tax.
