Businessman makes bid for return to Renfrew council A former member of Renfrew Town Council has tossed his hat back in the ring for the upcoming Oct. 25, 2010 municipal election. Clint McWhirter, owner of Seaway Tire on O’Brien Road, decided in early July, it was time to get back into local politics. “I can bring a perspective to council from a business point of view,” McWhirter said. “I still have kids at home, so I can speak on behalf of families. I understand what their needs are,” the 53-year-old married father of two added. With his kids a bit older now, and through the urging of others, McWhirter feels he again has the time to devote to council. McWhirter was a member of Renfrew council two terms back, and finished sixth in voting the year the number of councillors was dropped from six to five. He has been a part of several committees in recent years, including the town’s committees of adjustment, planning and

recreation, and as well as the NHL/NHA committee. McWhirter was also a director with the Renfrew Chamber of Commerce. He can also look at the indoor pool and second ice pad projects from a unique perspective. “I might be the only one who has been on both committees,” McWhirter said. The owner of Seaway Tire for 15 years noted, a voice from a business point of view has been something council has been seriously lacking. “I know exactly where they are coming from, a voice that understands business,” McWhirter said. He feels it’s time for some fresh faces and a new look to Renfrew council. “There definitely needs to be a change. It’s been going on the same way for years,” he added. He said more people from the younger generation need to vote, adding that the town’s recently-implemented electronic voting system should help raise those numbers. “We have to tell the younger people to vote,” he said.

Eastern Region OPP take aim at graffiti it may: • lead to a perception that nobody cares about the neighbourhood; • cost thousands of dollars for the removal, repair or painting over of the graffiti; • lead business owners to relocate or prevent new businesses from establishing in the area; • impact the beautification of your community; and • cause fear in residents of your community. The Eastern Region Graffiti Eradication Strategy is dependent on the community and the police working together to eradicate the number of incidents through education, enforcement and empowerment of the community. It can’t be done alone. If you see graffiti in your OPP policed neighbourhood, report it immediately.

Statistics have indicated a rapid growth in mischief incidents, specifically graffiti, within the detachment areas of Eastern Region over the past two years. Although the incidents are minor in nature, graffiti, if not dealt with can quickly lead to further incidents and those of a more serious nature such as criminal activity by organized groups (gangs). Eastern Region OPP has created the “Eastern Region Graffiti Eradication Strategy” to enable detachments to track graffiti incidents, suspects and lay subsequent charges. Chief Superintendent Gary Couture, Eastern Region Commander said, “The vision of the Graffiti Eradication Strategy is a community free of acts of graffiti; a community that takes pride in working together as one team to reduce crime and maintain its beauty.” If graffiti is not removed immediately,

Ballantyne pursues mayor’s OPP marine unit lays charges chair in Horton Township Almost 10 people were charged during the past week for having open alcohol on a boat. The offenders were from as far away as Ohio and British Columbia and ranged in age from 24 to 50. Three men over the age of 60 years were charged with failing to have the proper safety equipment on board a vessel.

MISCHIEF Central Public School has been the target of mischief several times in the recent past. Damage includes ripping screens from windows, garbage can set on fire, broken windows and graffiti. Police are increasing patrols and neighbours are encouraged to report immediately when youth are congregating at the school. Call 1-888-310-1122 to speak to the OPP dispatcher. A vehicle travelling on Highway 17 near Haley Station was struck by a paint ball gun on Aug. 1 at about 6:45 p.m. The culprit used light blue paint balls. There are no suspects. His Division 6 oldtimers team is hanging tough, in third place. He is also a member of the Renfrew Tennis Club, and participates with the Morning Tennis Group. The walls of his home are adorned with many paintings he has created. Ballantyne has sold many pieces of his art and has his own website. Ballantyne doesn’t foresee his first kick at politics as posing any kind of a problem. He has faced the pressure of managing big organizations across the country with the federal government. Ballantyne doesn’t take the mayor’s position for granted, either. “I am looking forward to the challenge. I want to meet the people. If someone else comes along (to run for mayor), we’ll have a campaign,” he adds. He’ll know by Sept. 10.

Horton Township residents will have a new mayor come Oct. 25. Earlier this year current mayor Bob Johnston announced he won’t seek reelection in the fall, opening the doors to a newcomer. Rod Ballantyne, 62, a retired River Road resident, has become the first to file for the position. “I have no previous experience, I guess I’m what you would call a fresh face,” Ballantyne said with a grin. “I’ve been retired and thought it is time to get involved in public service. Not everybody has the time. I have the time.” Ballantyne and wife Meena have two daughters both of whom live in British Columbia, and one young grandson. Ballantyne worked for the federal government in Ottawa. He and Meena have resided in Horton for about 10 years. Ballantyne is familiar with the Ottawa Valley as his grandfather was Justice of the Peace and ran the post office in Bristol. He also has relatives in Norway Bay. “I spent a lot of time there in the summertime as a young lad,” he said. Ballantyne has been keeping up with the affairs of Horton council, and knows many of its current members. “I think we’ll be facing challenges,” he said. Horton has to be ready for the future, growth, and how to handle it, he added, “including Highway 417, whenever that might be. As a council, we have to be ready for that. “If selected to office, you have to treat people responsibly. Be open. People have issues. They may not always get the answer they want from their perspective, but you must treat them with respect.” “Things have basically gone well,” he added of the current council. “The incumbent (Johnston) is not running again. He served us well.” Ballantyne has many other interests. “I play soccer twice a week for a team in the Ottawa-Carleton Soccer League. We play against guys 20 years younger than us.”

The Arnprior Fish and Game club has been the integral part of the Ministry of Natural Resources eel project on the Ottawa River. “Organizer Eric Smith, with the assistance of Stewart McLaughlin and a handful of others, keeps the program chugging along,” says MNR Madawaska Area biologist Kirby Punt who oversees the project. He reports that in 2009 the volunteers were successful in capturing four eel and implanting transmitters for tracking. The objective of the program is to determine movement of eel and identify habitat and winter hibernation areas where eel will burrow into the soft silt and mud. In the past they were observed by early settlers and native people balling up together in the mud. This spring the Arnprior Fish and Game Club was able to capture five eel, four of which MNR was able to implant with transmitters and one that was a recapture from last year. “The interesting part of the recapture was the incision you could not notice other than a faint pigment change and the eel had grown 300 grams and almost 5 cms in one year,” says Punt. “The major portion of they diet that we have observed is crayfish with some other insect larvae and some fish. We did catch the biggest to date at 2750 or 6 pounds and 42 inches long and is possibly going through a colour change to more grayish silver, possible sign of maturing.” The club was successful in obtaining funding through the Species Act Risk Stewardship Program to continue their research over the next year which will help to cover the costs of flying and equipment for monitoring. The club has been tracking the eel from both water and by air flying with Chapmen Air in Arnprior. Flying by air covers more ground quickly and has better reception than by water. However by boat allows us to get a more precise location and determine the type of habitat being utilized, whether rocky bottom of muddy flats etc. If a person accidentally catches a eel with a transmitter in it they can be identified by the red spaghetti tag with an unique serial number on them which have

The MNR says, if you catch one, please record length, weight, girth, bait used, location, approximate water depth and approximate distance from shore. been inserted towards the back of the fish. “We have also been inserting pit tags that can be read by scanners. The reason for the pit tags is that if the eel become sexually mature and start to make their migration back to the sea, make it by the 3 dams on the Ottawa River, down into the St. Lawrence and are captured in the eel fishery off of Quebec that we can see that they made it that far and were able to descend the dams,” says Punt. “Also, if they are killed at a hydro facility they may be picked up by survey crews monitoring mortality at these facilities. All is of importance to learning about eel in the Ottawa River watershed and working on the eel management plan.” In summary, nine eel have been implanted with transmitter with two more expected this summer. One eel is believed to dead and one has not been located since the fall of 2009. However, the rest are tracked regularly. A new brochure and fact sheet has been produced to gather more data from the public and along with posters that will be erected at many launching sites along the Ottawa. Punt still gets calls from the general public on accidental catches of eel and or experiences from the anglers which have all expressed interest and a wiliness to share their experiences which, as he notes, “has been very interesting since it is not the prettiest of fishes.”

OPINION EDITORIAL

Alcohol and driving don’t mix, at any age I

t is official. As of Aug. 1, anyone ages 21 and under cannot have any alcohol in their system when getting behind the wheel. Previously, anyone who held a full G licence could have a blood alcohol level of up to 0.05 per cent. Following an announcement by the Ontario Transportation Minister and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) recently, that number now only applies to drivers 22 and up. Young drivers who are caught with any alcohol in their system will face an immediate 24-hour suspension of their licence which could last up to 30 days and up to $500 in fines. Kathryn Windsor of the Renfrew County MADD branch said young people in the area have problems with alcohol because of the small town feel and the proximity to Quebec. Youths consuming alcohol have been the cause of “a percentage of the accidents happening in this area,” said Windsor. According to the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, the peak ages of drinking and driving are 19 to 21. New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Manitoba already have similar regulations in place.

Some may argue that this new law is an example of ageism. Many young drivers are responsible and would be able to handle having a glass of wine and hitting the road responsibly later on. However, there are many who can’t. And that doesn’t just go for young drivers. Everyone handles their alcohol differently, depending on gender, weight/size, metabolism, etc. Over the years, countless police reports have come across the news desk about impaired driving. People of all ages, from teens to seniors, have been caught drinking and driving in Renfrew County. What about the over-21 population who can’t seem to handle their alcohol? Drinking and driving does not seem to be going away anytime fast. It remains a reality, often ending up in tragedy. Perhaps limiting youths behind the wheel is just the beginning. It may not be a bad idea to start at the 16 to 21 demographic and work up from there. Alcohol and driving has never been a good mix.

Much valuable information lost if long-form census eliminated To the editor: We are writing to you on behalf of Renfrew County Child Poverty Action Network (CPAN) in response to the government’s decision to discontinue the requirement of one in five households completing a long form census questionnaire. We were disappointed to hear that our local MP, Ms Gallant, was in support of this move, quoting the government’s position that since they could not explain the value of the long form, the practice should be discontinued. The long form questionnaire is a critical mechanism which helps to increase and enhance our understanding of the Canadian population. The information gathered as a result of the long form is fundamental to research, planning, policy analysis, program development and decision making in the public and private sectors. The information gathered gauges how our most vulnerable citizens are faring by gathering relevant and important information such as income, education level, occupation, and ethnicity. We are therefore able to know

how many children live in poverty by area, how many poor families are single parent led, have graduated high school, or post secondary education, are working, unemployed or underemployed, own their own home etc. This important information allows all social service providers (and government) to provide meaningful and needed help and assistance to those who need it, many of whom are unable to help themselves. With the data we are able to identify the outcome of current public policy, we are able to identify gaps in service and most importantly, are able to identify the at risk populations and how they are faring in Canada. There are some leaderships which believe that not knowing is a benefit because then you don’t have to take action. Shame on any government or any organization which practices this. Shame on our Conservative Government for projecting this impression. There is a proposal that the government introduce a “voluntary” long form questionnaire. Experts have indicated that these

Mercury Mercur y The Renfrew

forms would be in danger of not being completed in uniformity across all provinces, communities and socio-economic groups. As such, the data would not be reliable or valid and in the end we would just be wasting our tax payer money as well as the time of those who do complete the survey. The aftermath of having no reliable instrument to gather this crucial information our most vulnerable populations will suffer and in the end the government eliminate transparency and accountability. Kudos to Mr. Munir Sheikh, Canada’s top statistician for resigning from Stats Canada due to his belief that a voluntary survey isn’t a substitute for a mandatory census. As advocates for children and families we would prefer that every household be required to complete the long form, then we would truly know how all children and families are coping. Unfortunately, as it is, the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. See CENSUS, Page 7

Small-town goodwill To the editor: Thank you, Renfrew! In a self-checkout kiosk at Wal-Mart on Wednesday, I paid by debit and requested $60 cash back. After bagging my items, I forgot about the cash until driving home to Eganville. Hoping against the cynicism of my threescore years, I called the store and provided details from the receipt. Guess what!? Some unknown customer found the money and turned it in. Thank you very much, whoever you are! (May your karma always be positive, and call me if you read this: 613-570-0733.) Moreover, the folks at the service desk and business office said customers demonstrate this kind of honesty more often than you might imagine, especially if life sometimes leaves you feeling a tad jaded. Yes, a reasonable fraction of shoppers turn in lost keys, wallets, and other valuables intact, and the Wal-Mart staffers credit Renfrew’s small-town good will. Does your faith in humankind need a little nursing? Take heart from this distracted shopper at Wal-Mart. Rich Corman Access Work Service Renfrew

LETTER

Sometimes people help

DEFUSING A CRISIS Camp Legewade – the Hurds Lake scout camp for kids in the Renfrew and Arnprior areas – was the unfortunate victim of a theft recently when their whipper-snipper was stolen. Upon learning of this, stepping up to the plate and showing their support for the Camp was George Jackson Toyota. Jackson’s has donated a Stihl gas trimmer to replace the stolen one. From left are Camp Legewade property manager Bob Debeau, and Mitchell Coad and Craig Coad, representing George Jackson Toyota.

To the editor: A short while ago I put in a letter about some stolen items from Camp Legewade. Since then we have discovered not only the whipper snipper and a 12x26 garage style tent gone but also two extra large baking pans, a 200-foot extension cord, a Coleman flashlight and an am/fm cd player that was purchased for the cooks. On behalf of Camp Legewade, I want to thank Jackson Toyota for replacing the whipper snipper which they originally donated to the camp. I also want to thank Ralph Miller for donating two used Weed Eaters. However, the camp is still missing all the other items. Although there are people out there who steal and do not care who they steal from, there are still those who will come to the aid of our youth and what Camp Legewade stands for. That is, the growth of our youth and the knowledge this camp can bring to everyone, as well as just having fun. I want to personally thank everyone who has ever helped Camp Legewade in any way. Heritage gravestone stolen To the editor: Please help me to return a 150-year-old gravestone that was removed from the Martin Cemetery This stone belonged to the deceased in the Martin Family and was in bad shape. Hopefully it will, along with others, be resurrected. We in Horton Township have applied for an Ontario Trillium grant to put up a fence, a sign and, most important of all, restore the many monuments that date back to the mid 1800s. We are hopeful this will occur. We have done our best and with that stone returned, I, as many others, will be thankful. David Brown Horton Township Planning Committee 613-432-1211

Time to switch to Superior.

Census an important tool Continued from Page 6 The middle class is disappearing. We should demand that the government stay accountable to us, the taxpayer, by continuing to monitor important aspects such as income, education, employment, family make-up, etc. The decision making process of the current government raises great concerns, not so much that they would make a decision without any significant consultation process, but, more so, they are unwilling to rethink their position after such a tremendous negative response from across Canada. Great leadership is not about making decisions, it is about having the courage and strength to recognize when mistakes are made and to fix that mistake rather than take the road of forging on no matter what (remember the misfortune of the Light Brigade). We hope that there is greater outcry from organizations and from the general public to challenge the government to continue the current practice of using the mandatory long form as a part of our census procedure. MP Gallant defends stand on Ottawa River designation JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com

Giving the Ottawa River heritage status without involving Quebec would “send a wrong message to our neighbours,” says Renfrew-NipissingPembroke MP Cheryl Gallant. Gallant also suggests there “may be other issues that need to be resolved that have yet to be adequately addressed,” before she endorses the heritage designation application. Gallant made the comments in a letter to Renfrew County council, explaining why she has not yet supported the designation request. County council passed a resolution in June urging the prime minister to force Gallant to officially support the designation application. It has been speculated by some observers that Gallant is withholding her support because the campaign was initiated by the riding’s former Liberal MP Len Hopkins. It was also suggested Gallant is opposing the effort because she fears the designation might affect property rights. In her letter dated July 22, Gallant

said she is responding to “rumours and misrepresentations stated both inside and outside county council chamber before and since (the motion)” and suggest councillors “take the time to gather all the facts before passing judgment.” Gallant maintains the request is “unprecedented” because the application has been changed to only include the Ontario side of the river. “Designating half the river is half the job,” she said. “I would hope that county councillors would want the heritage designation of the Ottawa River to unite our two provinces, not divide us.” Gallant wrote that it is her job to consider all the implications, national as well as local, that come with recognizing the historical significance of the Ottawa River. “If this designation goes through where only half the Ottawa River is so recognized, we will have lost a great opportunity in nation-building. Let’s get it right the first time.” That’s how best to honour the memory of Hopkins, she said, denying she opposes the designation because he

Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski says people are angry, and rightly so. “That’s because they’ve just been hit with a new tax that further erodes their ability to make ends meet. “And even though the government has finally bowed to opposition pressure, and is re-

originated the effort. “In regards to some of the unfortunate comments attributed to the chair of the Ottawa River Heritage designation committee, I remind county council that former heritage committee chair Leonard Hopkins had retired years prior to my running for elected office. He was never a political rival. “For the record, I was honoured to nominate Mr. Hopkins for the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in 2003 in the absence of recognition from his own party for his long years of service,” she wrote, including a photograph of her presenting the medal to the long-time Liberal MP. She says she provided Hopkins with a letter of support early in the campaign, but respecting his committee’s independence, took a “hands-off ” approach to his efforts. Because the request was changed some time from 2006 to 2008 to include only where the river makes up the provincial boundary instead of its full length, and only the Ontario side, the stakeholders should be consulted again before any final decision is made, Gallant wrote.

moving the Eco-Tax for now, it’s clear they still intend to come back with something else. They say they want to “re-tool” it, when actually, at least to me, they just need more time to come up with a better way to “re-fool” us,” he says For his full column, visit yourottawaregion. com/opinion/columns.

#3759 Moses Moses, a five-year-old neutered male, will make a wonderful companion. He was abandoned in the country and thankfully someone found him and brought him to the shelter. He was in terrible shape - very thin and badly matted - but he is now healthy and ready to find a good home. Moses is a very friendly cat. He likes attention but isn’t demanding. Moses is a large cat with an easygoing personality. He is quiet, gentle and good with other cats.

St. John Ambulance members hope new facility will create more visibility STEVE NEWMAN

She most recently conducted a Building on O’Brien Road, may July 17 and 18 course on standard also improve its visibility. “By this fall, we’re hoping we’ll first aid and CPR (for infants and have our place up and running, children) in the Renfrew Knights and get more community awareness for the St. John Ambulance brigade,” said Daniels, who is a St. John Ambulance course conductor. “We’re always needing volunteers.” With the facility, St. John Ambulance is looking to start a cadet brigade this fall. Cadets are ages 10 to 21.

A few weeks ago we reported four very young Green Herons on Valerie and Ken Dick’s lawn on Airth Boulevard and we wondered where they came from. This week we find that a pair of Green Herons had built a nest in a large maple tree next door on Bill and Ina Guyea’s front lawn. Now we know where the young herons came from. This is an extremely rare event because the species is a very solitary one and should be nesting in a more sheltered area. The young still go to the nest at night and when they are seeking shelter otherwise they spend their time searching for insects in the Dick’s and Guyea’s flower beds. Ken also found a fish on the ground near where the young were hunting. It is likely that one of the parents is bringing fish to the young. VARIETY OF FRUIT ATTRACTS THE BIRDS Ron Huntley’s email from the Lanark Road. Hello Jim and Ila: After noticing how good a crop of Black Cherries and Choke Cherries we have this year, I was prompted to take note of all the fruit trees that the birds enjoy each year around the perimeter of my grassed area. As you have previously written, I do get a lot of species for my small lot (119 on or over just 5 acres). I believe my large variety of small fruit-bearing trees contribute to this number. The grassed area is about 1.5 acres and the following is a list of the trees, shrubs and vines the birds enjoy hawthorn, honeysuckle, wild grape, Schuber’s choke cherry, Evan’s cherry, elderberry, flowering crab, mountain ash, Nanking cherry, choke cherry, choke berry, service berry, black cherry and highbush-cranberry. I have seen a great deal more feeder activity over the past week or so, with some returning after a month or more absence. Most of the nesting is over and the young are being introduced to my feeders. I believe some had a loss during the late heavy frost; there appears to be only one young Hummer this year but the male is back courting the female, so perhaps more to come in a late nesting. Good birding! Ron Huntley A note from Julia Winn at Mount St. Patrick. Today we noticed a young bird

I remember something you wrote regarding “No abandoned birds.” My significant other and I thought we should do something to help. Well, a few minutes after quoting you, sure enough, the little one squeaked out a sound. Not long after, a mom or dad came flying in. We still wonder if there is anything to help protect the little guy. Any suggestion would be appreciated. Even if the thought is to let Mother Nature do her job. Julia Winn

Julia: Cedar Waxwings are very communal in nature. Not only do the parents feed and protect their young but siblings from a previous nesting, last seasons adults that are not nesting and neighbouring parents and young also help. The young do not seem to have any fear when they leave the nest. They will walk along the tree branches, bobbing and weaving at every step. It is a wonder they survive at all. I do believe it is best to let Mother Nature do her job. WHERE WILL THEY GO? Lucy and Mark Boisvenue have seen a pair of Common Loons with one chick on Astrolabe Lake at Logos Land and are wondering if the loons will be wintering on the Gulf of Mexico. Not a place to spend the winter this year. According to W. Earl Godfrey’s book The Birds of Canada, Common Loons winter along the coast of British Columbia and on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland/Labrador, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia and along the eastern states of the United States as far south as Florida. Unfortunately, some do winter on the Gulf of Mexico. Enjoy your birding. Ila and Jim Ferguson, 5313 River Road, RR 5, Renfrew Ontario K7V 3Z8 Phone 613-432-2738 or email jamesh@ nrtco.net

Out of the national capital and into the Ottawa Valley STEVE NEWMAN

place I can visit and enjoy myself, or with my kids.” After all, living in Ottawa doesn’t necessarily give one an eye on the world, even though it’s the nation’s capital. “I do feel in Ottawa we’re very secluded, but in the centre of attention,” explained Leonidis. “We don’t have (enough) connections with the Valley,” she said.

steve.newman@metroland.com

Nelly Leonidis hasn’t seen nearly enough of the world yet. She’s only 27. But having travelled as far away as Australia and as nearby as the communities of the Ottawa Valley, she wants to see a whole lot more. When not working for the federal department of foreign affairs, this passionate photographer is looking to capture the magic she sees in people, plants, buildings and other parts of landscapes she visits. She shared several of those images, captured over the past year, in the Ottawa Valley, during her art exhibit, Valleyscapes. The July 18 exhibit was sponsored by the Calabogie Women’s Institute. The host site was Barnet Cottage where WI members hoped to drum up a little interest in their local association, which was founded in 1934. They also hoped to share a little bit of the magic of the region, as the Valleyscapes exhibit showed visitors scenes as varied as kilted men at the Glengarry Highland Games in Maxville, the iconic falls in Pakenham, and numerous images within Renfrew County. The latter included vistas from Eagle’s Nest (near Calabogie), a mill in the ghost town of Balaclava, and La Luz Verde, a photo taken in Burnstown of a small green plant highlighted by the bright setting sun. Valleyscapes is the result of a year-long

endeavour to learn more about eastern Ontario, specifically the Ottawa Valley. But the endeavour won’t stop there, says Leonidis. Which is why she encourages those, who know of a gem of a place to visit and photograph, to pass their tips her way. She can be reached through her website of www.nellleo.com or email her at nelly@nellleo.com. And if you don’t have a computer, Leonidis passes out a colour bookmark that lists 10 things to remember about opportunity photography. They include:

• If you find something interesting, shoot it; • If someone says it’s stupid, ignore them; • If it’s breathtaking, immortalize it; • If it’s hideous, study it; • If you’re curious, explore; and • If in doubt, ask for permission. Too often she hears people saying there isn’t enough history or culture in the Ottawa Valley, an observation she finds baffling. With the help of her photos, she hopes viewers will say, “Heh, maybe that’s a

Meanwhile, members of the Calabogie WI hope some local women will consider joining their group, which they consider to be one of the gems of the Valley. One of the institute’s members is Iva Laviolette, who turns 80 this year. She’s been a member for 50 years. “I joined in 1960. It’s lots of fun,” she says, although she practically chuckles at the memory of paying a membership of about five cents when she first joined. The annual membership fee today is $40. Membership is also small in numbers, with about nine, but the group has seldom had a membership of much more than 20 while focusing on fellowship and fundraising. The Calabogie Women’s Institute prepares the meals for the monthly Calabogie Lions Club suppers, and through fundraising have supported such causes as the Bonnechere Manor, Hospice Renfrew, the Calabogie Public Library, and Calabogie and Area Home Support. The limestone quarry at Valley Landscaping and Excavation near Douglas is up and running. Recent licensing marks the end of a long journey, to maximize use of a property handed down through generations. Heritage research during the licensing process revealed that Alex and Alison Brown’s solid-bedrock property at 1272 Helferty Road was once an island in the Champlain Sea. But that’s not the only traceable history. There’s a rich family history as well. The land was handed down from Alison’s grandfather Wilfred Haley to her father, then she and Alex severed a portion eight years ago. Alison says her dad is proud to see the property developed and always understood and appreciated the value of the beautiful limestone at the heart of the family property. Now that beauty will be shared with others. The business offers armour stone and flag stone, and customers can call and order by volume or pick their own material. The stone is peeled with an excavator, not blasted, which allows for more consistent sizes which makes it easier to place. It takes a strong work ethic to

build any successful business; plus a strong back when that business involves shaping landscapes. A creative eye is also critical, and Alison marvels at her husband’s ability to see the potential in a property. She says there has been a lot of interest in the company’s new service, from as far away as Ottawa and Montreal. The 95-acre limestone quarry adds a whole new dimension to an already-successful business. When he was younger, Alex had a dream to own his own business by the time he turned 30. In 2005 he realized that dream when Valley Landscaping and Excavation was established. It specializes in landscaping, excavating, service lines (water, hydro, septic), basements, septic design and installation, lot clearing, backfill, finishing grade and more. The landscaping services include everything from lot clearing, tree and stump removal, to retaining walls, seeding and sod. Brown’s equipment inventory includes an excavator, tri-axle dump truck, mini excavator, skid steer, one-ton truck, plus 10- and 30-ton trailers. And there are no real hours of operation – except morning to night, seven days a week. “We try to accommodate everyone,” says Alison.

Long-range weather forecasts are useless for farmers I listen to weather forecasts but ignore long-range forecasts – seven and 10-day ones. They are totally useless and unreliable. I can’t understand why weather forecasters put their necks on the line when they have trouble getting a three-day forecast right. Why do we need a seven day forecast? A 10-day forecast is ridiculous. Accurate weather forecasts are very important to farmers. Farmers rely on weather forecasts to decide what work to do on a particular day. Drying hay is only feasible in dry weather. Farmers making hay want sunny and breezy days. When I’m doing second cut I want at least four good drying days. Sun and wind-cured haymaking is certainly a challenge when making good second cut hay. Baling hay that’s not quite dry will heat and spoil. Many farmers bale high moisture hay and wrap it. That works well. I cut down a good chunk of second cut when the weatherman says a high pressure system is moving in and there will

MAYNARD VAN DER GALIEN RURAL ROUTES be sunshine for the next five days. It usually showers one of those days. If it’s going to be a damp and wet week, I like to spread manure on just harvested hay fields. The manure will do its work. Hayfields will flourish again next year when a coat of manure has been applied and the good stuff has soaked into the ground. It’s smart to watch the sky very closely and not just rely on weather forecasts. The weatherman usually changes his tune after the second day of a forecast that promises five rain-free days. I remember a few years ago the forecast called for good weather all week – no rain. I was baling hay one afternoon and could see rain coming down to the northeast and all afternoon bands of showers went

by. The radio weather forecast kept calling for good weather. Finally late in the afternoon the forecast changed and said there was a chance of showers. I know many of us would like to tell meteorologists and weather forecasters they could improve their accuracy if they would just look out the window. We tend to think meteorologists work locally in our area. That’s not the case. Environment Canada’s Canadian Meteorological

Centre in Dorval, Quebec provides forecast guidance to national and regional prediction centres. So it’s a good idea to take the long-range forecasts with a grain of salt. July rainfall: July was a dry month. My rain gauge recorded 54 mm for the month. That’s identical to Ottawa’s rainfall. Last year July was wet – 142 mm. July 2008, 97.5 mm. July 2007, 144 mm. July of 2001 and 2002 were very dry, 42 mm.

Under Construction!! Exciting things are happening at Employment Networks! Renovations of both the space and the services are taking place in order to expand the employment services being offered to the community.

Corporation of the Town of Renfrew

The office will remain fully functional during this transition. Employment Networks, an organization that has been providing employment services to this community since 2000, has been contracted by MTCU (Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities) to deliver the new one-stop source of employment information and services for the community as part of the Employment Ontario Service Network. Over the past 10 years, Employment Networks, a community service agency, has provided free of cost employment services to its clients; the residents of Renfrew and surrounding area who were looking for work. These services included one-on-one counselling in career decision-making, career development, and job search, assistance to those eligible for funded programs, participation in skills building and information workshops that meet the communities’ employment needs. As well, the Public had access to a resource area consisting of computer banks with Internet access and bookmarked links for research ease along with a wide variety of information and resource materials. As part of its new role in the Employment Ontario Service Network, Employment Networks is excited to be expanding its services to employers. Adding services geared to employers gives us the opportunity to work with all aspects of labour. Employers will benefit from using the service to access skilled individuals who are seeking employment and by gaining a better understanding of programs and services that may benefit them when hiring new staff or providing training to new employees. Through this new expanded service, we will also be developing a local labour market listing to assist potential candidates with finding out about local employers, job prospects, and their skill requirements; which will decease the employer’s time spent answering such inquiries. Our information and resource area is being enhanced to carry expanded HR (Human Resource) information for employers, self-help resources and modules for career decision-making and job searching, and our workshops can be accessed by anyone. Our excellent job board, which is heavily used by possible candidates and is updated daily, provides the opportunity for employers to call us first with job postings in order to match the opening with our clients. Employment Networks will become a single point of access in this community for employment resources, information and programs through the use of our self-serve resource area, counsellor interaction and referrals, providing a “One-Stop Shop” for information and services. For more information and assistance, contact Employment Networks at 613-432-3424, drop in to our centre at 231 Argyle Street (mornings are best), or visit our website at www.employmentnetworks.ca or www.ENrenfrew.ca. We are here to help YOU with your employment needs. EMPLOYMENT NETWORKS – “Linking the labour market to the labour force” 406872

Once again, the Town of Renfrew will be conducting drinking water sampling and testing for lead to comply with Ontario Regulations. The town is seeking volunteer test sites in single family homes, multi-unit buildings, commercial properties, and industrial properties. Under the provincial legislation, the municipality must test the drinking water for lead at 40 private residences, 4 non-private residences, between June 15, 2010 and October 15, 2010. • Tests would be performed at older residences suspected of having lead pipes or pipes with lead solder. • Homes built before the mid-1950s could have lead pipes. • Lead solder was used to join copper pipes and was phased out in the late 1980s; any new construction done after those years should not be affected by lead in the piping system. Since the Town must access homes to test for the presence of lead, we are looking for volunteers to allow the Town of Renfrew staff access to their homes to collect samples. There will be NO charge to the resident for the testing of the lead sample. Each sample will total three litres in each location and the regulations obligate the town to advise tenants of the test results as soon as they are available. The higher risk individuals affected by lead that exceeds the standards are pregnant women, infants and children under the age of 6 years old. The Town will require permission of the property owner to take the samples. If you wish to be added to the list of potential test sites please contact the Development and Works Department, Municipal Garage, Darl Gaudette at 613-432-4147.

Dwight Reinhart battled, but a sevenstroke deficit entering the final day of the Ottawa Citizen Amateur Golf Championship proved too much to overtime for the Renfrew golfer. Three-time Ottawa City and District Champion Allen McGee of the Arnprior Golf Club held on to win by four strokes at the Marshes on the final day of the fourround championship last Thursday. McGee posted a 5-over-par 77 to clinch the event, which also included rounds at Eagle Creek, Loch March and the Kanata Golf and Country Club. A former Renfrew club professional, Reinhart is the 2010 OVGA Match Play Champion, and the winner of two CPGA Ottawa Zone Championships before he regained his amateur status. He fired 7372-76-74 for a 295 total, four shots off the winner’s pace.Reinhart is one of only two area golfers heading to the Canadian Amateur in London next week. The Renfrew golfer was just one shot

off the pace after the second round of the tournament before McGee manufactured a 70 in the third round. Reinhart said missing an eagle put which would have cut McGee’s advantage to three midway through the final round was a key point of the tournament. “When I missed the three-footer on 10, I knew it was going to hurt, It wasn’t meant to be. It was Al’s day, but I got him thinking,” Reinhart observed. Chris Bernard of Arnprior finished third with a 297. The tournament opened with 136 players competing, of which 72 advanced through the second-round cut, while the best 36 scores qualified for the final session. Renfrew’s Rob Warren registered scores of 75-78-77-83 to finish in a three-way tie for 15th at 313. Marion Knox and Mary Peer of the Renfrew Golf Club competed in the Women’s Citizen Amateur Golf Championship. However, both were eliminated after missing the cut heading into the final round.

No heir apparent for Tiger I’ve never put much stock into such lists as golf rankings. For the past decade, Tiger Woods was the undisputed No. 1. Then there was everybody else. However, over the past several tournaments, Tiger has walked the same path as his peers. He continues to be ranked No. 1, but certainly hasn’t been. Then again, who has? The top-10 ranking entering this past week read Woods, Mickelson, Westwood, Stricker, Furyk, Els, Donald, McIlroy, Casey and Poulter – all well-known names. But none has shown any kind of consistency, and certainly no dominance. It’s becoming like most other sports. Never count the old guard out, but the next crop of players appears to be taking over. Almost every week’s event is won by someone you’ve never heard of before. So who’s the best golfer in the world? It’s the guy who wins the next tournament. Wolves: Training camp for the 2010-11 edition of the Renfrew Timberwolves is less than three weeks away. Under the direction of coach Cal Smith, training camp sessions run Tuesday through Thursday, Aug. 24, 25 and 26 from 8 to 10 p.m. at Ma-Te-Way. Tryout cost is $100. Wolves general

PETER CLARK PETER’S PUTTERINGS manager Brent Sylvester can be reached for more details at 613-432-7572. Sylvester has three pre-season games in place at this time, including a home contest versus the Stittsville Royals on Thursday, Sept. 2. The Wolves open the regular season Sunday, Sept. 12 when they host the Valley Division champion Perth Blue Wings at 7 p.m. Riders on the Storm: If and when an Ottawa football team returns to the field, they will not be known as the Rough Riders, not if Saskatchewan has its way. Ottawa adopted the name Rough Riders in 1898. The Saskatchewan Roughriders weren’t founded until 1910. That should open the door to renaming the Ottawa football team Rough Riders if the new ownership wishes to. * * * Jack Nicklaus competed in 27 Canadian Open golf tournaments. but was never able to add this title to his list of victories. CASSIE JOYCE McDougall Mill Museum

Since its formation, Renfrew has certainly been home to numerous influential figures. Here at the McDougall Mill Museum, we are lucky enough to have information and artefacts regarding these significant and historical characters. On the first floor of the museum, visi-

tors will find a wall showcasing photographs of many prominent people throughout Renfrew’s history. On this wall are photographs of the Honourable M.J. O’Brien. O’Brien is known as one of the founders of Renfrew. He was involved in almost every aspect of Renfrew’s expansion. Some of his most significant developments include running a factory that provided munitions during World War I, his achievements in mining, manufacturing, and lumbering, as well as being

visitors can view a display dedicated entirely to Charlotte Whitton. Whitton was born in Renfrew on March 8, 1896, and became known as “Lottie” Whitton by her peers. After growing up in Renfrew, she entered Queen’s University in Kingston with six scholarships, and graduated as one of their most successful students. Whitton was elected as the first female mayor of Ottawa, and served from 1951 to 1956, and again from 1960 to 1964. See McDougall, Page 24

Finally, O’Brien is known for playing a major part in the formation of the Renfrew Millionaires, the forerunner to the NHL. For a brief period of time from 1912 to 1926, the O’Brien Cup replaced the Stanley Cup as the award given at the Championship Game in the NHA. It was then replaced again with the Stanley Cup, and now sits in the Hockey Hall of Fame. On the second floor of the museum,

1970: New manager joins Walker’s AUGUST 4 , 1910 NEW BARBER SHOP: Mr. James Stringer this week opened up a new barber shop in Renfrew, the quarters of the latest addition to the town’s tonsorial parlour being in the Cameron block where Miss Cleary, formerly had her fancy goods business. Mr. Stringer is well known as a good barber and a good fellow, and with natty new modern equipment and his nice neat sanitary premises and appliances, ought to get his share of the business that will be done by six barber shops now running in Renfrew. DEATH OF MRS B.V. STAFFORD IN B.C.: Says the Arnprior Chronicle last week: On Sunday word reached Arnprior of the death of Mrs. B.V. Stafford, relict of the late B.V. Stafford of this town, who passed away on Saturday in Vancouver, B.C. At present no particulars are to hand. The body will come to Arnprior on the train of Sunday morning, accompanied by her son Lawrence and her daughter Mrs. S R. Rudd. The funeral will take place on Sunday at 2:30 to Emmanuel Church and then to the cemetery. AUGUST 1, 1935

JULY 29 ,1970 NEW MANAGER AT WALKER’S:

FROM THE OLD FILES Walkers Department store has a new manager. Ed Harsant, 25, comes to Renfrew with considerable experience behind him. Mr. Harsant has spent the last five months as manager of Walkers Department store in Arnprior. Prior to this he was assistant manager of the Company’s store in North Bay for 16 months and was assistant manager of two Walker stores in Toronto for two and a half years. Mr. Harsant was educated in New Toronto Secondary School in Metropolitan Toronto.

Check out Shanty Days at the Whitewater Ross Museum Saturday, August 14 3 to 6:30 p.m. See our Community Calendar for details.

TOGETHER: Two Renfrew papers have joined forces. This is the first issue of the Mercury Advance. There are 20 people on staff now and working together, we hope to combine what was best from both papers into a good community weekly. We also hope to make money at it, for there are more at home for we 20 to feed. A newspaper is also a business. Now that there is only one newspaper in this community, we have an added responsibility to report and interpret the news. We will try our best to do so with truth and fairness. We do not expect to always be loved or popular, respect is more important to us.

Continued from Page 23 She was named Canadian Woman of the Year twice by Canadian Press. These are accomplishments that make Renfrew proud to call her one of its own. Also to be found on the second floor of the museum are articles of clothing worn by members of the Stewart family, such as a velvet Opera dress, several pairs of shoes, and children’s clothing. The Stewarts were an influential family that was large in number, and influenced many aspects of early Renfrew. James

Stewart was renowned as a man of good character, as he served on the creamery board, the elder council of the Presbyterian Church, the school board, and he was a temperance advocate. His son, Ernie, and grandson, Hugh, both became prominent lawyers in town. We would like to remind everyone that this month the museum will be holding a Kids Week Aug. 8 to 14 and a Seniors Week Aug. 15 to 21 during which admission will be free to both age groups. Feel free to come by and enjoy what the McDougall Mill Museum has to offer.

RAGLAN STREET SOUTH TO HAVE BETTER CORNER: For a better turn in the roadway at the intersection of Raglan and Coumbes streets, purchase of a small bit of land from M.J. O’Brien Ltd. has been completed and on Tuesday morning ground was broken by municipal workmen. A removal of posts will be necessary, one of them an electric light standard and another carrying telephone wires. After the tearing down of the Dominion House an opportunity became available for street improvement at that corner, and the Town Council was quick to take advantage of it. The turn from Raglan to Coumbes street, both of them integeral parts of the provincial highway No. 17, will now become easily made, besides the course will be plainer to strangers, many of whom have been going to Horton street thinking that they were on the direct road to Ottawa. MONDAY AUGUST 5 NAMED CIVIC HOLIDAY: Monday next, the first Monday in August has been proclaimed a civic holiday in Renfrew, in which respect this town is in line with a large number of towns and cities of the Province. At a special meeting of the Municipal Council on Monday evening Mayor Wade was authorized to issue the proclamation. Councillor Wright moving and Councillor Vandecan seconding the motion to that end and no one dissenting. No other business was taken up by the council.

ART

FAMILY TIES Valerie Searson was one of the gifted artists featured at the Bonnechere Museum in Eganville on the weekend. The portrait on right shows her son-in-law Brendon Clouithier who is presently serving in Kandahar, Afghanistan. At left is her daughter, musician Erin Searson-Clouthier. This weekend paintings by artist and retired minister Rev. von Boetticher will be displayed and offered for sale at the museum. He has been fond of painting scenery, buildings, wildlife and horses since public school. Mercury photo by Lucy Hass Ted Barron, Broker of Record 646-2374 email: barrote@nrtco.net
