FATALITY, ARSON
Twenty-five years in municipal office have ended for Sandi Heins, after losing the race for Renfrew mayor to Bill Ringrose Monday night. Ringrose appeared to turn the corner in the campaign with a hard-hitting take on Heins’ leadership style at the all-candidates meeting Oct. 13. Almost two weeks later, Heins was still smarting from Ringrose’s criticisim that her leadership style lacked delegation and that council unnecessarily went into in-camera sessions far too often. She admits she was taken aback by the criticism, but said the result was probably more about the local demand for change. During the campaign local Toyota dealers Dave and Warren La Rocque offered $500 to each new council candidate for their campaigns. Ringrose didn’t qualify, as a current council member. Ringrose ran a campaign on the need for change in how council is led. “I came into this evening feeling reasonably confident because of what I heard on the street and what people said when they called to wish me well,” said the 64-year-old Ringrose, who took a convincing early lead in the electronic voting, by a margin of 892 to 652. Heins prevailed in the very small portion of votes, from the long-term care homes and hospital, 61 to 35, but Ringrose won the paper-ballot portion, 550 to 437. That resulted in a final tally of 1,477 for Ringrose, 1,150 for Heins, and 615 for Callum Scott. Ringrose said he received a lot of feedback about local residents’ desire for change before election night. See Page 4
