Kultur Hardwood Flooring’s hard times continue. A Feb. 1 morning fire caused extensive smoke damage at 2 Innovation Drive in Renfrew, where the auction and liquidation firm, Maynards, has been overseeing a liquidation sale of the Kultur’s inventory. In 2010, Kultur Hardwood Flooring was named one of the 50-best managed companies in Canada. But in February 2011, it went into receivership and has since been selling hundreds of thousands of dollars of its inventory. Maynards vice-president Larry Suzuki was on the scene last week to determine the extent of the damage. The Renfrew OPP provided surveillance at the scene as an official conducted an investigation for Ontario’s Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM). The 9-1-1 call came at 6:41 a.m. Feb. 1 when an employee reporting to work discovered the fire. When the Renfrew Fire Department first arrived, there was heavy smoke, says Captain Rob Dougherty. A total of 11 firefighters, two pumpers and one aerial-ladder truck were at the scene. Only minor damage was sustained to the building, but inventory suffered extensive damage despite activation of the sprinkler system. The fire department also received help from plant employees to remove smoldering product from the one-storey building, located just off O’Brien Road. See EXTENSIVE, Page 2

Great response to fundraiser for Berndt family STEVE NEWMAN steve.newman@metroland.com

Renfrew Subway staff are thanking members of the community at large for throwing their support behind a late-January fundraiser for the Berndt family. Ten per cent of local sales went to the family after Renfrew Subway employee Michelle Berndt and her mother, Guylaine Lepage, of Li-

tchfield, Que., died in a New Year’s Day crash. The two-vehicle crash, on the Quebec side of the Chenaux bridge, occurred shortly after Guylaine picked up her daughter at the end of a shift at Renfrew Subway. The total of $1,702.50 was raised. Just over $900 came from sales. Another $800 was deposited by the public in a donation jar at the store. “I’m pleased because we did something for

the family,” said Subway owner Navin Patel. “Customers were telling me that this was the best thing we could do for the family. “I know that several customers also came back several times that week, more than they normally would.” Michelle’s dad, Robert Berndt, left a card with the “wonderful” Subway staff, in which he expressed his gratitude for the public contributions made during this time of sadness.
