Sunday morning, just after midnight, the Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police and the White Water Region Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Sullivan Street in Haley Station. An adult male fled the fire, fleeing by a window. He was taken to hospital for treatment of broken bones and burns. As a result of the fire, the Ontario Fire Marshal attended the scene. Investigators located two acetylene tanks, one of which was leaking. As a precautionary measure, some local residents were evacuated but told they would be able to return to their homes by Monday, once the tanks had been removed. The tanks had been warmed by the fire, but neither blew, says Whitewater Fire Chief Wayne Heubner. The 9-1-1 call came in at 12:05 a.m., while two fire trucks from Station 1 in the Village of Haley’s were on the scene by 12:19 a.m. There was “massive damage” to the house and garage, and a car was burned in the driveway. Chief Heubner says the fire was under control by 5 a.m., but firefighters remained on the scene to monitor for hot spots. The cause of the fire is under investigation, by the OFM and with assistance of the OPP. The primary investigation, says Heubner, was completed by Monday evening. Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

NOT CHICKEN OF THIS CHICKEN Winston Burgess is just a bit enamoured with the main character in the Horton Winter Carnival chicken bingo. Wind-blown cold conditions kept attendance down Saturday, but 100 people still attended the annual carnival’s hearty breakfast at the community centre. Others took part in the children’s and adult games and other activities on the program.
Unforgettable rescue by canoe Steve Newman
steve.newman@metroland.com
Calabogie Lake residents Al and Debbie Knaut will long remember this rescue on their virtual doorstep. It was early afternoon on Sunday, Feb. 12, and Al had been recovering from recent eye surgery. But he decided to head outdoors for his first collection of firewood in weeks. Good thing he did. He heard someone calling from help. Looking up, about the length of a football field away, he saw someone in distress while sitting in a red canoe in a small section of open water on the
otherwise ice-bound lake. The ice can be thin in places, since the waters in front of their home are about 1.5 kilometres from moving waters at Barrett Chute. As suspected, a non-local snowmobiler, unfamiliar with the area, went through in thin ice. Another snowmobiler headed to Calabogie Lodge for help, while the other snowmobile companion hurried over to the Knauts’ residence and grabbed their unlocked canoe. Upon hearing the yells for help, Al informed his wife, who called 9-1-1, and within a few minutes members of
the Greater Madawaska fire department were on the scene, soon followed by paramedics and an Ontario Provincial Police snowmobile unit. “I didn’t realize at the time that he was sitting in my canoe,” said Al, who leaves the canoe outside in the winter. “It was very fortuitous that he happened to go out at that time, because usually he does it in the morning,” said Debbie. “It was just a combination of factors. It still boggles my mind how everything fit into place, and saved a life. See RESCUE, Page 2
