Renfrew County councillors canĘźt seem to ďŹ nd a way to secure more provincial dollars for upgrading Highway 17. In the past theyĘźve tried the ďŹ nancial approach, telling QueenĘźs Park and the federal government that it would be money well spent. But with limited success. The latest approach, tested during the May 30 meeting by Petawawa Coun. Treena Lemay, goes in another direction. LemayĘźs presentation to council included the photos and stories of those who died over the last couple of years on Highway 17. • Lucienne “Lucyâ€? Web, Jan. 25, 2011;

• Pat Harvey, a week later in Deep River; • Bryan Casey, near Arnprior, worked at AECL; • Damon Souliere, 18, was texting on May 28, 2011 when he was killed in an accident; • Karlinton Booth rear-ended a tractor trailer, again near Arnprior; • 16-year-old Timothy Archambeault, on June 15, 2011, four other Pembroke friends were injured; • A week later it was Michael Clouthier, 27; • Bob Berger on June 30, in Cobden; • Yvon Briere, a soldier who survived numerous conicts, Aug. 4; • No deaths, but a serious threevehicle accident occurred near Ren-

frew on Aug. 23 involving a house trailer; • Jason Rickard of North Bay, 20, after hitting an 18-wheeler; • Lynsey Cote and Mitch Albert, best friends, on Sept. 24; • Alan Smith and friend Marinea Smith, 79 and 74 respectively, on Jan. 31, 2012; • Greydon Woollerton on April 23; • Lloyd Ferguson of Kingston, May 22, followed by a three-vehicle accident three hours later. “In 2011, Renfrew County was the deadliest in the province,â€? Lemay said afterward, to an emotion-ďŹ lled room. “These fatalities didnĘźt need to happen.â€? See DEATH TOLL, Page 5

“WeĘźre not the main event, the building is,â€? said OVG Inc. president and co-owner Shawn McHale at the open house introducing OVG and OVG Solar IncorporatedĘźs new consolidated home last Friday. McHale called it a monumental day for the company that spent $600,000 to bring “a landmark building to its former glory.â€? The buildingĘźs former business occupants include Stewart Hartshorn Inc., as far back as the 1920s. “It has been transformed from top to bottom, and I am sure its former businesses that were residents here ‌ would be proud of the results,â€? added McHale, who said every effort was made to spread the renovation work to as many local suppliers as possible. Founded as Ottawa Valley Glass in 1978, OVG has forged ahead as a major player in aluminum curtainwall and window manufacturing in eastern Ontario and, increasingly so, across Canada. Its contracts for buildings with major glass-based exteriors are happening close to home and abroad, as evidenced by the works in process in its assembly plant at 555 Hall Avenue. On-site products were ready to be shipped for such projects as the Yorkdale Mall, Edwards Mazda, Quinte Hospital Belleville, the Quinte Courthouse and the Labrador Hospital. The former home of Transworld Signs, which left the building to centralize Montreal about four years ago, is now the spacious consolidated home for OVG Enterprise Inc. and OVG Solar. The building is more than 78,000 square feet. OVGĘźs previous ofďŹ ce headquarters were on Barnet Boulevard, across from the Scapa North America plant, but they rented space at different locations, including 40,000 square feet for its processing facility at the Innovation Centre in town.
