High-water drama for RPG, Round Lake property owners STEVE NEWMAN steve.newman@metroland.com

For decades, many Round Lake residents have blamed Renfrew Power Generation (RPG) for the shoreline damage on their wa-

A total of 143 landowners make up Coalition 108, a committee of Round Lake property owners who brought forward the class action suit. See ‘Supreme Court’, Page 4

Lost man found near his Bonnechere Manor home Sunday, July 24 proved to be a day not soon forgotten for one Bonnechere Manor resident who decided to explore the bush in front of Bonnechere Manor. A Code Yellow (search for a missing resident) was initiated by manor staff when an adventurous male resident failed to return to the home after one of his outings. The male resident in question often struck out on his own to walk downtown and sometimes into the bush to find drift wood for his artwork. About 4:30 p.m., the resident’s daughter and a manor staff member decided to go to a bush area in front of the manor that he was known to enter on occasion. When his name was called

Painful Warts?

Supreme Court ruling in favour of Coalition 108 Round Lake owners wait to see if Renfrew Power Generation appeals decision Continued from front The hearing, to determine if there was proper cause to proceed to court, took place in March 2011. Solicitors Scott McLean and James Wishart of the Ottawa firm, Fraser Milner Casgrain, represented Coalition 108. Justice Robert J. Smith’s 22-page decision was released June 29, leaving RPG with the option of appealing the decision before the end of July. If the suit goes to court, Coalition 108 members say they will seek compensation for past damages. They’ll also look for Renfrew Power Generation to put in place measured controls to reduce the likelihood of future damage. “It’s in the hands of our lawyers,” said RPG special projects manager Peter Boldt, who refused to say whether it planned to appeal the decision. “No comment whatsoever. It’s too premature to have any comment.” The court ruling is important, says Coalition 108 chairman Ken Boland, because of the damage caused to so many properties on Round Lake over the years. The land owners’ efforts were intensified after some of the most extensive shoreline damage ever, in 2008, when the Township of Killaloe, Hagarty & Richards declared a state of emergency. If RPG does not appeal the Supreme Court decision, the Coalition 108 chairman says the committee can proceed with having a survey done to determine where the ‘trespassing’ line lies, and how far waters have been allowed to proceed beyond that line. If that survey is favourable, the group would proceed to seek financial compensation for damages caused beyond that determined line, said Boland, who has been a Round Lake cottager since the 1950s. A Coalition 108 news release calls the Supreme Court decision “a necessary and significant step toward resolving the continuing erosion of Round Lake properties and damage to buildings and the natural environment.” Coalition 108 committee members

say at least 17 times during the last 40 years, when water levels have been recorded, the levels have risen beyond the permitted elevation of 107.5 feet.

cial Park beach, said Bohart. Bohart is hopeful the Ontario Supreme Court ruling will result in positive dividends in more ways than one.

1917 LICENCE OF OCCUPATION

ROUND LAKE SURVEY NEXT?

That’s the limit stated in the licence of occupation activated for the Tramore dam, at the southeast end of Round Lake. The Ontario government granted that licence to Ontario Hydro in 1917. The licence was taken over by RPG in 1931. It states the operator must not let Round Lake water levels rise more than six feet beyond the pre-dam level of about 102 feet. Coalition 108 spokesman Don Bohart, 78, says this isn’t just a recent problem, but one he recalls his dad, William, complaining about several years ago. In support of his argument, Bohart says the family boathouse once had about 30 feet of beachfront, but is now with no beachfront, and now sits 70 feet farther back of that previous beach mark. In the early 2000s, Round Lake residents Bogart, Neil Mantifel and Rob Afelskie sat on a Bonnechere River public advisory committee created by the Ontario government to determine water levels and flow in the river’s nine ‘reaches’ or regions. The committee also included Ministry of Natural Resources staff and local power producers. The final report, signed by the Ontario government in 2004, became the foundation of the operating plan for Renfrew Power Generation, but Bohart, Mantifel and Afelsekie each filed dissenting opinions. “We weren’t expects and didn’t try to guess where the line should be, but there are three times in the year − in the fall, summer and spring − when there have to be different levels if you want to succeed (and not experience flooding).” Shore damage has continued this year, with horrific erosion just to the southeast of the former Foy Provin-

If the class action suit proceeds, following a favourable lake survey, Bohart says the Erin Brockovitch scenario could apply. In other words, not just Coalition 108 committee members could receive financial compensation, but anyone owning damaged property on the lake shown to have been caused by RPG’s operation of the Tramore dam. There are about 450 property owners on Round Lake. The test case for the group is the Plaunt family property, owned by Grahame Plaunt and formerly owned by his father (Peter). The Plaunts have lost about 40 feet in depth from the front of their former shoreline, says Bohart. While Bohart says the committee is pleased with the Supreme court ruling last month, he says it’s a shame a solution couldn’t have been found without local property owners spending more than $100,000 on legal costs. Bohart says efforts to sit down with Renfrew Power Generation in January 2009 to reach a solution failed largely because of RPG’s disinterest. And any appeal by RPG isn’t going to help matters, by burning money in both sides’ pockets, suggested Bohart. “Why should we have to do it again, again and again?” he asks. “Ultimately it’s going to be Renfrew (town) council (that decides) if they go to trial … no trial is cheap in Ontario. You’re not looking at 100 grand, but a lot more.” In the long term, Bohart says the goals of Coalition 108 members are protection of lake-side properties, recovery of some legal costs, and compensation for property damage. A court case would initially determine the flooding rights of RPG on Round Lake, as set out in the 1917 licence of occupation.

Loon nesting platforms a summer project An email from Andy and Ann Humphries; Sorry for not getting back to you quicker on your request for some contact information for the loon nesting platforms. The platforms were supplied by Ontario Power Generation (OPG), Ottawa/St. Lawrence Plant Group. It is one of the initiatives they have undertaken as part of their Environmental Program. The intent is to help reduce the impacts of fluctuating water levels where this is a result of their operations. Andy Nareczny and Matt Halliday were the ones who delivered the platforms and instructed us on how to set them out. They can be reached at the Renfrew HQ, 613-433-9673. We have not had any success with the platforms this year, but we may have been a little late in getting them out. There are, however, two young chicks which have hatched in the vicinity this year. Let us hope they survive. Thank you Andy and Ann for getting this information for us. It is too late to put the platforms out this year, but it does give us time to contact Ontario Power Generation (OPG) and prepare the sites to receive the platforms for next season. If the platforms would help loon nesting on waterways where fluxuating water levels disturb or destroy the nests please contact the Renfrew office of (OPG).

JIM FERGUSON SCENE FROM THE HAWK’S EYE Best regards, Mary Steele WHO IS CALLING? This is the time of year when the majority of birds exchange their songs for calls: contact calls, warning calls, aggressive calls, food location and information about the welfare of flock. One of the most distinctive characteristics of birds is the variety of sounds they make. Producing the songs and calls is an inherited and instinctive ability. Recent studies, however, indicate that some birds learn their songs and calls from listening to other birds. Probably the greatest number of calls is given by the raven, crow and jay families. These families have a high level of brain development. Vocalizations and body movements go together. It is very important that every member of the flock understands exactly what each call and body movement means. It could be very dangerous if they do not. Aggressive calls are the most numerous among birds. Disputes over, territory, a mate, nesting material and food

can all generate a response are settled by the various calls. If you watch the birds at your feeder, not a second goes by that there is not an altercation over who will feed and where. The aggressive body motion is always accompanies by an aggressive “call”. Contact calls help keep the flock together as they move through the woods in search of food. A mixed flock of chickadees, nuthatches, warblers and woodpeckers is kept together by the frequent “dee, dee, dee” call of the chickadee. Cedar waxwings call continually as the flock flies to and from a food source. Night migrants keep in contact by issuing chirp notes, the notes also keeps them from colliding with each other. As the birds gather to prepare for migration we will hear more and more calls relating to flock behaviour.

A FIRST For the first time we had a family of American redstarts in our yard. We thought we had seen every species nesting nearby but as usual nature surprised us again. It is best to never say never when dealing with Mother Nature. Enjoy your birding. Ila and Jim Ferguson, 5313 River Road, RR 5, Renfrew, Ontario, K7V 3Z8. FINE SUMMER BIRDING We have had a fine birding summer. The blue birds moved out of their home on Sunday and I immediately house cleaned in the hope of a return visit. We also have one young pileated woodpecker being cared for by its parents. There are several cedar waxwings just learning to fly and still occasionally fed by their parents. Gold finch families are too numerous to count. Several pairs of purple finches bring young to feed. Chickadees, white breasted nuthatches are bringing their young to the black oil seed feeder. The brown thrashers have returned to feed with their brood. Eastern phoebes are still caring for young. A considerable portion of the maple bush has been cut over and I am wondering if it affected the hawks as this is the first year that we have not seen one hawk, even the goshawk is gone. We also have a family of green herons that have nested and are raising their young. It has been busy but interesting.

Water safety matters

E

ach July the Lifesaving Society of Canada runs a public awareness campaign focussed on water safety and drowning prevention. According to reports from the society, 404 Canadians drowned in 2010 and 128 of those drowning deaths occurred in Ontario. In June the Office of the Chief Coroner released the 2010 Drowning Death Review, covering all incidences of drowning in Ontario from May 1 to Sept. 30, 2010. In his report, Ontario Chief Coroner Dr. Andrew McCallum noted: * a 260 per cent increase in the number of drowning victims less than five years of age; * 85 per cent of those killed by drowning were male; and * 96 per cent of those who drowned in boat-related incidents were not wearing life jackets or personal flotation devices (PFDs) . The society reports that alcohol was also a contributing factor for 4 in 10 drowning deaths in Ontario. The message is clear. Water safety matters. This summer holiday weekend, make sure you are doing all you can to prevent yourself, and others, from becoming just another statistics. Have a safe and happy holiday weekend.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers, other police service personnel, ambulance workers and firefighters will be out in force this holiday weekend keeping Ontario’s roads safe and rescuing the unfortunate. But their own lives will be endangered by drivers who do not obey ‘Move Over’ legislation. In Ontario, Section 159 (2)(3) of the Highway Traffic Act requires drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated. If the highway has more than one lane, the law requires the driver to move over and leave one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle if it can be done safely. Failure to do so can result in fines from $400 to $2,000 and three demerit points for a first offence. “Officers report that often it is older drivers who are ignorant of this law since it was enacted in 2003 after many current motorists already had their licence,” said OPP Commissioner Chris Lewis. “Ignorance of the law is not an excuse to endanger the life of a police officer or an emergency worker.” In partnership with the media, Ministry of Transportation of Ontario and other police services, the OPP is conducting an educational campaign this week to make motorists aware of their obligations. From Aug. 1 to 7, OPP officers will conduct a focused enforcement campaign aimed squarely at drivers who continue to violate this law. Since 1989, five OPP officers have been killed while working on the sides of Ontario roadways and many more have been injured.

Hunting the elusive Ottawa River muskie Early Saturday morning, Bill Craig and Paula Jamieson backed their boat into the Ottawa River at the Arnprior boat launch. It was another day on the water for Bill as he pursues Renfrew County’s own river monster – the muskie. A women’s muskie tournament was planned that day for a growing number of women interested in this elusive fish. By derby’s end, only one fish had been caught and turnout for the free event was small. But Bill remains optimistic about the fledgling event and has high hopes for its future. The next major event for the Ottawa Valley Muskie Club is the Aug. 27 Arnprior White Pine Festival tournament where he expects a good crowd. Bill has dedicated almost 40 years to muskie fishing and he’s certain a worldrecord muskie lurks deep in the Ottawa River. “The big thing about muskies is that they’re such a hard fish to learn their habitat and their movements. They’re constantly on the move. They follow the forage fish from June right through to December,” he says. He has guided many others in their own personal quest for these prized predators of the deep. “At one time it was a man’s main game, to catch a muskie. I’ve had fighter pilots, firefighters, hockey players, you name it.

LUCY HASS MISCELLANY They get in the boat, they get a muskie and when they get the picture they’re like a little kid. They’re so excited because they’ve accomplished something,” Bill says. He even knows an orthopedic surgeon who places catching a muskie as one of the top things on his bucket list. Now women are catching on, and Paula tells of a girlfriend who wanted to go muskie fishing when she turned 50, so off they went. “She actually got a muskie on, it started dragging the boat up the river and I said, oh-oh, I’m not sure if we should be fishing muskie. And the two of us had to hold the rod while she reeled it in,” she recalls with a laugh. Unlike some oldtimers who jealously guard their fishing secrets, Bill loves to share information. He has even helped to design a special muskie bait. “For years I couldn’t figure out why we were losing so many fish – we had to upgrade the hooks,” he says, holding up a string of dyed bucktail, shiny Colorado blades and number 10 hooks. “They’re the number-one spinner bait

right now in the world,” he says. “The record fish is out here and we want it. This will do it. This will be the difference between success and failure,” he says with a confidence reserved only for fishermen. Most anglers feel a special attachment to the tools of their trade, and women are no different. Paula tells of one girlfriend who prizes her tackle the way other women treasure jewels. Bill recalls when he “first fell in love with muskies” and it traces back to a cottage next to his uncle’s. “They used to catch a few, cut the heads off and nailed them to the tree and they were all dry. “And when I saw them, I was stunned. Back then, they looked like monsters but now I know they were like 25-, 30-pound fish.” Bill figures he has caught thousands of fish over the years, but the thought of a world-record muskie persists. An Ottawa River muskie. “When I get it, it will be the crowning glory,” Bill says. “Right now you need a 70-pound fish to stop all the controversy. And they’re out here, believe me. I’ve seen them as wide as the back of my boat out here.” ‘Here’ is a place he loves and respects – the mighty Ottawa River. As he says, “This body of water is incredible. It’s unbelievable.”

Stephanie Cadman, the Ottawa-born star of world international fiddle and stepdancing, will be in concert Aug. 3 in Eganville and is also giving an afternoon workshop that day in which anyone can learn to stepdance. Cadman, whose base is now Toronto, grew up in a musical family in Ottawa. “I was drawn to the fiddle and developed a passion for dance and theatre starting at age four,” she says. “Like April Verch, Cadman is one of the new generation of Canadian fiddlers,” said Ish Theilheimer, of Stone Fence Theatre, which is producing the show. “She combines top-level skills in traditional fiddling, music and dance with contemporary creativity.” World reviews have been even more complimentary about her. The Guardian called her “...incredibly talented...world-class...jaw-dropper Stephanie Cadman...kicks so much butt...” Eye Magazine called her dance numbers “truly amazing.” Cadman began her professional career as a lead in the hit musical Swingstep combining her skills as actor, dancer, singer and fiddler. She then went on to perform in the Mirvish Productions Celtic review Needfire, and the Broadway National Tour of 42nd Street. She was a founding member of the hit dance show The StepCrew, and is featured in Bowfire. As a dancer, Cadman is accomplished in tap, stepdancing, ballet and jazz. She has appeared as a dance soloist and fiddler with symphonies all over North America including the Kennedy Center’s National Symphony orchestra. She was the top female at the World Tap Dance Championships in Germany at age 16. She also holds three stepdancing titles at the prestigious Pembroke Championship. One of the highlights of the day will be an 3 p.m. workshop that day in which, among other things, Cadman will teach the basics of stepdancing to anyone who attends. “She taught 150 people to stepdance at a workshop I attended at the Blue Skies festival,” said Stone Fence Theatre crowd favourite Ken Ramsden. “That’s why I suggested to Ish that we get her in for a concert and workshop.” “I’ve been privleged to share the stage with stars like Ashley Macisaac, The Chieftains, Colin James, Jason McCoy, Lara St John, Amy Sky, and opened ‘NYE 2010’ for Frankie Valli and The Eagles in Houston Texas.” She also starred in Sir Sean Connery’s 2009 ‘Dress to Kilt’ benefit concert in New York City. “I take great pride in having performed for Canadian Forces show tours at several bases in the Middle East, and in the Canadian North,” said Cadman. She is also in great demand as a choreographer and director. Her first directorial debut was in 2009 with Highland Storm The Gael at the College of Piping in P.E.I. which opened with huge success, and was featured during the opening ceremonies

Calabogie ladies win OVGA Intersectionals SUSAN VEALE The Calabogie Highlands Golf Resort hosted the ‘H’ Division of the Ottawa Valley Golf Association Intersectional Golf Tournament on Monday, July 11. The Calabogie ladies posted the high score for the day on the home course. They captured their section with 29 points over the second-place Metcalfe ladies, who had a score of 23. The other two clubs participating in the match play event in this division were Perth and the Glen Mar club from Stittsville. Joyce Hatt, Arlene Bleeks and Sandy Drake each won all three of their matches to score a full six points. PROMOTION The win for Calabogie moves them up a division for next year’s play. Reinhart romps to Ottawa golf title STEVE NEWMAN steve.newman@metroland.com

Dwight Reinhart, a member of the Renfrew Golf Club, didn’t let last Thursday’s 30-degree C heat stand in his way. More importantly, Tuesday afternoon he shook off one of his worst drives in the three-day Ottawa Citizen Amateur Golf Championship to win by six strokes. His tee shot into the water on the par-four seventh Tuesday led to a triple bogey seven, as he lost the lead to Jeffrey Crowe of the Camelot Golf Club and left defending champion Allen McGee of the Arnprior Golf Club just a stroke back. “I was pretty disappointed. You kind of think you’re letting the tournament slip away,” he said. “I just tried to tell myself to stay with it and keep plugging ahead.” The situation worsened for Re-

inhart, 41, when he bogeyed the eighth hole at Dunrobin’s Eagle Creek to fall two strokes off the pace. But he soon regained control. Reinhart fired off five straight birdies, to finish with a three-day score of 210, compared to 216 for Crowe. McGee fell back to 219, with a final-round 78, to finish fifth. Jason Allen of Renfrew Golf Club moved from 13th after two days to a sixth-place 221 with a finalround 73. Reinhart shot an even-par 72 at Eagle Creek to clinch his first Ottawa amateur golf title, after being in contention to win last year. He also won with the help of Emmalee, his 12-year-old daughter and caddy for the day. The comeback from disaster on the eighth hole began on the ninth where Crowe double-bogeyed after hitting into the water. See ‘Reinhert’, Page 13

Is there room for Ozzie in the Hall? The Rodney Dangerfield of the National Hockey League has retired. Never in the history of the league – goaltender or otherwise – has a player received less credit for his win-loss record. I’d venture to say this includes every sport. Chris Osgood hung up the goalie equipment as an NHLer officially for good last week after 17 seasons, 14 of those with Detroit. He also played for the New York Islanders and St. Louis Blues. As Red Wings fans can tell you, Osgood was a part of three Stanley Cup championship teams. He was back-up in the 1997 title run. He was between the pipes for two titles, including the 1998 team that remains the last team to capture a second consecutive Stanley Cup. Ozzie came off the bench in the first round of the playoffs to replace an ineffective Dominik Hasek in 2008 and promptly backstopped the Wings to another Stanley Cup.

PETER CLARK PETER’S PUTTERINGS He also took Detroit to the Stanley Cup final in 2009, a series the Wings lost in seven games. Osgood retires with 401 regular-season netminding wins. He would have stopped at 400, but just in case there was a miscount, he chalked up another one. That win total is 10th all-time and his 15 playoff shutouts put him fourth overall in that department. His 317 wins as a Red Wing leave him behind only Hall-ofFame goaltender Terry Sawchuk (352) in Detroit hockey lore. Overall, Osgood is 74-and-49 in the post-season when the heat is turned up the most. You know what comes next. Is Chris Osgood worthy of a place in the Hockey Hall of Fame? It’s actually an interesting question that we’ll know the

answer too when he becomes eligible in a few years. You know which way most Wings fans are leaning. Goaltender wins are like goals to a sniper, and there’s only nine guys ahead of him in a league that’s been going on almost 100 years. Patrick’s last stand: Patrick Lalime also retired last week. He had good days with the Ottawa Senators, but the goaltender will forever be remembered in the Nation’s Capital for a game 7 loss in Toronto when everything Joe Nieuwendyk threw at the net went in. Nieuwendyk probably stamped his ticket to the Hall of Fame that night. * * * Roberto Alomar’s ninth-inning home run in the 1992 American League Championship Series came off Dennis Eckersley of the Oakland A’s. Enjoy your summer. Peter’s Putterings returns in a couple of weeks.

Not daunted by a 1-and-14 regular season, Calabogie Home Hardware put together a pair of wins in the one-night four-team mini-playoff to emerge the eighth team in the 2011 Ma-Te-Way Mixed Slo Pitch League post-season. Calabogie on Thursday night, upset Bobsledz 14-11, and then fended off USS Manufacturing 17-16 to advance into the quarterfinal round this week. Jacob Fulton registered both wins and added a home run versus Bobsledz. Mike Warren (four hits) and Adam Dick also homered for Home Hardware. Erik Mask and Joel Blemkie went deep for Bobsledz. Kelsey Jessup handled Bobsledz pitching duties.

The Rising Star Series of three horse show clinics was finally able to hold its first horse show clinic of the 2011 season on Saturday, July 23 at JCS Stables just outside of Arnprior. News

Local Conservative MP Cheryl Gallant says the federal government is “on target to scrap the wasteful, long-gun registry.” In a July 21 news release, Gallant says she has received “a number of calls from concerned farmers and sportsmen “ asking when residents are going to see the end to the “billion-dollar long gun registry? Now that the Conservatives have a majority government, it is only a matter of time before the federal registry is gone.” Earlier this year in the Speech From the Throne delivered by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, to open the first session of the 41st Parliament of Canada, the PM paid special recognition to rural and small town Canadians, saying they should not be the target of unfair laws like the longgun registry. He repeated the government’s pledge to introduce legislation to end what Harper called a wasteful and ineffective long-gun registry. “There is no doubt that many heritage practices as well as traditional industries were harassed or ignored by the old administration. I appreciate the patience of residents as we work to keep Canada on track as the best place to live in the world,” said Gallant in the same news release. “A new fear that is being expressed by farmers and members of the recreational hunting and shooting sports community is the threat by the Province of Quebec to harass law-abiding citizens with a provincial registry.”

Greater Madawaska

SHARON SHALLA Greater Madawaska Public Library continues to expand its services by partnering with the CNIB. This new partnership provides access to Canada’s largest collection of alternative format books and online resources for people who have difficulty reading print due to a visual, physical or learning disability. Visual Impairment is defined as severe or total impairment of sight or the inability to focus or move one’s eyes. Physical Disability means the inability to hold or manipulate a book, and Learning disability is described as an impairment relating to comprehension. The really great aspect of this program is that it opens up CNIB material to

Corporation of the Town of Renfrew

Ramsay, books like The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill, as well as magazines such as Reader’s Digest and Macleans. The service offers children’s items too such as the Summer Reading Club, and favourite books including Love You Forever by Robert Munsch. Ages 6 to 14, can enjoy the Children’s Discovery Portal. If you would like to know more about this excellent service, please call the library at 613-752-2317. We have the Daisy Reader available in the library for you to try out, and a great selection of books and magazines on CD for loan. On a closing note, I would like to thank all those who attended our open house on July 19. We had all ages in attendance, from children to teens to adults. Pictures taken that day will be posted on our website within in the next few weeks. It was great to see the enthusiasm and interest patrons displayed when learning of our new virtual resources, especially the electronic book service that allows our patrons to download ebooks and audiobooks from their home 24/7.

Audiobooks can also be downloaded to your MP3 player, iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch within the library through our new Download Station service. Just bring in your portable audio device and we’ll help you download a free audiobook. Up to five electronic books can be checked out on your card at any given time, and there is no limit to the number of items you can borrow. You will need to enter your Greater Madawaska Public Library card number, so if you don’t have a membership please ask us how to get one. The Chilton Library database, which provides exclusive photographs, wiring diagrams, service bulletins, and diagnostic information for various vehicles, was also very well received by visitors to the open house. Audrey Jukes won the draw for an MP3 player and the poster winners in the children’s draw were Brendan Murphy, and Sparrow Stevens. The children’s book prize went to Ricky Miller. Congratulations to everyone!

AGNES WALKER Renfrew Farmers’ Market

Farmers’ Markets have been operating across Ontario for more than 200 years. For 40 years, the Renfrew Farmers’ Market has continued to operate as a true farmers’ market, and not a community or flee type market. The Town of Renfrew is very supportive of this type of market and wishes for it to continue as such. We do not operate under the Farmers’ Market of Ontario Organization, but we do try to follow regulations and standards set by them. Today, farmers’ markets are becoming more important and popular due to people being much more concerned about their health, the quality of food and where it comes from. Farmers market vendors travel fewer than 100 miles to sell at a farmers’ market. Compare with other scenarios where seven to 14 days can go by between

the times produce is picked and when it becomes available at a supermarket. In that interval, fruits and vegetables can travel, on average, more than 1,200 miles before reaching the final consumer. Since studies have shown that produce loses nutritional value as more time elapses from the time of harvest, locally grown produce available at farmers’ markets is available to you at the peak of freshness and nutrient availability. Some food retailers do carry local and organic products, but not all of them carry a variety of local foods, or ensure a fair price to the farmer. Shopping at a farmers market is a wholly unique experience that benefits farmers and producers directly, offering you more unique products, more heirloom varieties, and more opportunities to build relationships and learn about healthy eating.

Farmers’ markets are a community experience, where you can meet your neighbors, friends, and farmers, and where more of your dollar will stay in the community.

Bob Bouchard started with produce and now continues with his superb honey. And Bill Gagan continues with his fresh apples. PAST VENDORS

RENFREW START IN 1972 The Renfrew Farmers’ Market was established in 1972 by a Dutch immigrant William (Bill) Beimers. His farm was situated in Horton Township and was known for strawberries. Many of you may remember picking strawberries at his gardens. A few families who started a year or so after, are still vendors at the Renfrew market today. The McGregor Family is very popular with their early strawberries, wax beans and corn. In the early days, Mrs. McGregor and her daughters provided a lot of baking as well. The Mac Lavallee Family continues to provide a bounty of fresh yellow beans and savory as well as other produce.

Some past vendors, as many may recall, who provided the Renfrew Farmers’ Market over the past years with their specialties were Mr. Hultink with gladiolas and plants; Mr. and Mrs. Sam Shields with purple beans and yellow tomatoes; Mrs. Ethel McLaughlin with plenty of rhubarb and other vegetables; Mr. Provest with potatoes; Mr. Mike Polaski with huge tomatoes, potatoes and squashes; Mrs. Margaret Kenny had later produce of cauliflower, turnip and gladiolas; Mr. and Mrs. Tom Ferguson with honey; Mrs. Catherine Gallagher with pies and other baking; and Al Marion with a small assortment of cut flowers, woodworking of children’s furniture and plant stands, and, most of

all, provided us with music from his car. Our market begins the first weekend of May. Vendors with baking, crafts, potting plants, meats, and honey like to serve the Renfrew people as the weather soon becomes enjoyable. We start out with nine to 10 vendors. The market has had as high as 24 to 25 vendors, several being vegetable growers with different varieties of produce. Starting in June, we have salad greens and green onions, then later in June the strawberries arrive. In mid-July, yellow beans, garlic, beets and raspberries are ready. Corn, potatoes and tomatoes start arriving the end of July, the first of August. The produce increases through to the end of October if the weather allows. Today’s vendors of the Renfrew Farmers’ Market thank the people of Renfrew for their continuous support over the past 40 years.

• We thank the BIA for their continuous support of having a Renfrew Farmers’ Market downtown • We thank the Renfrew Public Library, Scott’s Hardware and the town’s municipal office for the use of the facilities by the vendors during market hours. • We thank the Industrial Commissioner Board for providing the banners at all entrances into Renfrew. • We thank Diana Wakely for her dedicated encouragement and support to improve the market over the past few years. CELEBRATION AUG. 6 Come join us on Saturday, Aug. 6 to celebrate 40 years of serving the people of Renfrew. There will be free coffee available, and goodies provided by the vendors. Make a purchase from any vendor and your name will be put in for a gift basket. Fortieth anniversary ceremonies will take place at 9:30 a.m. ALGONQUIN COLLEGE IN THE OTTAWA VALLEY

THE PILGRIMS ARE PAYING THEIR WAY: Some people seem to be under the impression that the ex-service men of Canada taking in the Vimy Ridge pilgrimage are being given a “joy ride” by the Dominion Government. If that were the case why would not every veteran avail himself of the privilege? And how could a big expenditure of the kind be made without saying anything about it in parliament. The truth is every pilgrim is paying $160 for the outing with the prospect in all cases of handing out considerably more before returning — the additional expenses by way of extras. No, these pilgrims are not deadheaded to Britain, France and Flanders; they are so to speak “paying guests”. GOLFERS TO QUALIFY FOR THE O’BRIEN CUP: July 18 and 19 have been set as the days to qualify for the O’Brien Cup. Thirteen players are required for this competition. Renfrew Golf Club players are to visit Pembroke Club on July 25th. This weekend will see the finish of the second round in the Millar competition. The players are John Steele, F.D. Vickers, T.L. Culbertson, W. Ireton, J. Henderson, R. McNab, J.J. Sothern, E. Jordan. Members of the Gatineau Club will visit Renfrew during the week of the 25th.

Renfrew’s river, The Bonnechere MICHAEL BRADLEY McDougall Mill Museum

serves a different purpose today the Bonnechere stills flows right outside the windows of the museum reminding us of the building’s history The Bonnechere River also played an important role in Renfrew social life. Pictures at the museum show past citizens of Renfrew lying on the banks of the Bonnechere, canoeing, fishing, picking water lilies and swimming. Though today many might cringe at the idea of swimming in the Bonnechere, there was once a Renfrew beach, located at the end of Ready Avenue, which was open for swimming. Also in winter when the river froze it was common for Renfrewites to skate

along the frozen surface of the water all the way to the third chute in Douglas. At a time when the technology we use today to entertain ourselves didn’t exist, the river provided many different forms of entertainment for the people of Renfrew year round. Although the Bonnechere no longer serves the lumber industry, turns mill wheels or is a swimming hole it is still relevant in today’s Renfrew. The second chute located in Renfrew houses a hydroelectric power generating station, which contributes to the town’s power supply, the river is one of Renfrew’s primary tourist attractions and canoeing and boating are still popu-

lar amongst locals today. One thing about history is that it is never just a straight story it always connects with a related history such as Renfrew and the Bonnechere. The history of Renfrew is not complete without telling the history of the Bonnechere because these histories rely on each other to tell the whole story. That is why although The McDougall Mill Museum is the “Renfrew Museum”, the story its artifacts tell is that of the town and the river.

Rivers play an important role in a town’s history and Renfrew’s Bonnechere River is no exception. Since the early days of settlement in the area the Bonnechere has been a focal point for growth and activity in the town. Since Renfrew was first established the town and the river have grown together over the course of their histories. Industry is what helps to stabilize a town and when recounting Renfrew’s industrial history one cannot neglect to mention the river. The Bonnechere connects Algonquin Park with The Ottawa River and in the nineteenth century the Bonnechere’s surface was choked with sawed logs from the area’s flourishing lumber industry. The flowing waters of the Bonnechere also turned the wheels of many mills in the past. In fact the building which today houses the McDougall Mill Museum was once a Bonnechere gristmill for making flour. Although the building

Greater Madawaska Greater Madawaska Library

I cannot begin to thank all of the wonderful volunteers who have contributed to the growth and success of the Greater Madawaska Public Library. When I began this journey

in 2000, it was necessary to build an accurate database of the collection in order to automate the library. My faithful angels came in several times a week for about two years. That being done, we needed to raise money to pay for the hard and software to process the information. With help from entertainers from the vil-

lage and co-opted spouses and kids, skits, musical presentations and the CBC Readings of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol raised the money to do the job. The Friends of the Library, many of whom also helped in the library or were on the board, raised awareness as well as money. See ‘Dewey’, Page 38

SUBS AND BOOKS GO TOGETHER Subway in Renfrew held a week-long campaign, stretching from the last week of June and into July with all proceeds going to the Renfrew Public Library. Ten per cent of Subway sales went to the public library, and a total of $1,700 was raised. From left are Renfrew Subway owner Navin Patel, council rep on the library board Andrew Evans, library board chair Lynda Janney and board member Donna Clark. Chief librarian Bettijane O’Neill thanked Subway customers and owner Navin Patel for their support and for being so generous. Mercury photo by Peter Clark

Dewey Data Continued from Page 37 As the collection was being catalogued, volunteers helped process and place them on the shelves. Over the years, many and varied tasks were ably handled by these angels. They coiled documents; laminated display items and patron cards; cut out bits and pieces for the children’s crafts and shelved the return books. It was great to have help (often in French) for the patrons in the Computer Lab. March Break activities were possible by the donation of time and skills to entertain the children. New materials were assembled with all of their myriad parts from ‘directions’ not necessarily matching the boxed parts! In the past few years, some have taken up the challenge and helped catalogue books as well. As the services provided grew and more administrative tasks were added to my plate, I could always rely on volunteers to take up the slack. I do hope that whoever replaces me will have an assistant, but there will always be work for volunteers. I do not know how I would have made it to today in one piece without all the help I received over the years. Thank you and when you get to that place in the clouds, may you be waited on and coddled by all those whom you helped! I wish to acknowledge and thank the Calabogie Lions, Seniors and the Women’s Institutes of Calabogie and Burnstown as well as local businesses who have donated funds for our activities.

#4006 Cassie

#4025 Gwen Gwen was found in Arnprior and never claimed. She was very sick when first brought in and has just returned from foster care. She is now happy and healthy and ready to find a loving new home. Gwen is a people cat - she loves attention and is very affectionate and friendly. She will follow you around for company. Gwen does not like other cats and would be best suited in a home where she is the only pet. Gwen is at the Pet Valu in Renfrew for viewing. She will make a wonderful companion for her new family.

Cassie was brought to the shelter to find a new home. She is a very sweet, little kitty that is just 10 months old. Cassie is affectionate and very friendly. She loves attention and she will follow you around. Cassie is playful and active and she enjoys other cats. Cassie is very social with lots of personality. She will make a great companion for her new home.
