Renfrew wrestler wins gold medal at national finals TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com Savana Pinsent is all smiles as she holds her gold medal back home in Renfrew on April 16. "It feels pretty good to win,” said Pinsent, a member of the Renfrew Vipers wrestling
team. Pinsent travelled with teammates Teegan Tabbert, Lily Warren and Jolie Brisco to the Wrestling Canada Nationals in Edmonton last weekend. All of the team members worked extremely hard representing the Ottawa Valley. Pinsent won all three match-
es to advance to the final, where she defeated a familiar foe to become the under 17 national champion on April 14. "It was unexpected because I had been losing to that girl," said Pinsent, who had a specific strategy going into the final round. "It was tough and I had to have a smart game plan."
Brisco, who placed seventh and Pinsent both advanced to the United World Wrestling Cadet Trials, on Sunday, where both girls finished fourth in their respective divisions. Pinsent, Brisco and Tabbert are off this weekend to compete in New York City at the Gotham City Girls Open tournament.

Raglan St. Lounge hosts grand opening on April 28 TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com There is a noticeable buzz around town about what is new upstairs at 168 Raglan St. S. Entering in the Raglan St. Lounge you instantly get that Sex and the City feel. The lights are low, the decor is on point, and there are comfortable lounge chairs, leather couches, high bar tables and traditional tables. It is chic, nouveau, and different, a welcome addition to Renfrew's downtown core. Owner Andrea Labelle purchased Santa Fe Southwestern Grill in November and has completely renovated the upstairs space, transforming it into the new lounge. Labelle grew up in the Ottawa Valley and has recently returned from working in the city where she was the president of a notfor-profit group. She is looking forward to the
grand opening on April 28 at 6 p.m. "It's exciting, it's a big undertaking," said Labelle. Why did she want to create this space? "There wasn't anywhere else to just go for dinner and drink, somewhere more upscale," said Labelle. "There is certainly nowhere else like this in Renfrew. It's bringing a little city into the country." She is already embracing the community and is a new member of the Downtown Business Improvement Association and has made the effort to go out and meet some of the owners from other local establishments. "It's not my intent to compete with other bars and businesses but to offer an alternative," said Labelle. One such partnership she has already cemented is with another local success story. Dean Batstone, owner of Batstone's Northern Ram-

Andrea Labelle is the new owner of the Raglan St. Lounge located at 168 Raglan St. South; the new lounge is open for business and is celebrating its grand opening on Saturday, April 28. ble, is joining with Labelle to bring his well-established songwriters open stage/ open mic to the lounge on Thursday nights, where he also hopes to perform. "We wanted to partner on something to enhance the new lounge," said Batstone. "We are also looking
at future partnership opportunities such as dinner and a show." Batstone is looking forward to working with her and embracing all of the other downtown changes, including the new boutique hotel planned for the post office building.
"The more new businesses we can pull in, it will revitalize the downtown," added Batstone. Reviews are already starting to pour in for the lounge. "It's a nice place to go out for a couple of drinks with friends," added chair of the
economic development committee for the town, Renfrew Coun. Arlene Jamieson, who is also excited for the new lounge. The grand opening is set for Saturday, April 28 and Labelle invites everyone to come out and take a look at the newly renovated space. She will be offering samples from her menu, wine sampling and Cowbell Brewing Co. will also be on hand. Providing the entertainment for the night will be Batstone and Cody Labombard. The new Raglan St. Lounge is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 4 to 11 p.m. with room for 124 people. The luxury space is also available for rent for private parties and other functions. The menu features items Labelle describes as "bistrogourmet but still moderately priced" For more information, find the Raglan St. Lounge on Facebook.

Gun owners mount opposition to changes in law DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com Renfrew County gun owners opposed to tightening the firearms law gathered to co-ordinate a response for the Liberal government. A meeting of about 200, hosted by Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant, took place at the Cobden Agricultural Recreation Hall on April 11. Guest speakers were Tony Bernardo of the Canada Shooting Sports Association, Steve Torino of the former Federal Firearms Advisory Committee, and Christopher Di Armani, a freelance writer and filmmaker. Their central message: Don't harass law-abiders who value gun culture. They will push back and win. "This is bad legislation. That's why they want to ram it through as quickly as possible," Di Armani said, author of a bestseller
on the current prime minister. "Justin Trudeau has backed away from every promise he has made. I believe we can make him back away from this one." Bill C-71, an act to amend the National Defence Act and the criminal code, includes new provisions to bolster background checks for those seeking a firearms licence. The RCMP would be allowed to examine a person's entire history for potential red flags. The current system can go back five years. Prior to getting a licence, the RCMP completes an extensive background check, including domestic violence records, mental health and addiction, and criminal records. An oversized mailbox decorated in camouflage was marched into the crowd to encourage participants to send letters, emails and place phone calls to members of Parliament, especially Public Safety Minister Ralph Goo-

During the question and answer period of the evening, Pembroke Outdoor Sports Club's Stanley Mercredi received a round of applause for speaking passionately about gun culture. "I'm proud of who we are and where we grew up, and I will bury my firearms (if C-71 passes)," Mercredi said. "I will defend my family and property. We have to stand together and fight this!" If among the solutions to gun violence causes an imposition on rural users, isn't that worth it - in the name of saving lives? "We need to educate people on the proper use of firearms," he said. "I believe you would see less crime if more people were properly trained. If you teach people to be lawful. They can be
ethical." Even in rural areas, gun violence - particularly against women, such as the victims of Basil Borutski who went on a killing spree not far from Cobden in 2015 - takes a toll. Asked if it would be much more difficult to kill people were guns not available to the public, Mercredi disagreed. "If you want one, you can buy one. Illegal guns will always be available," he said. "This bill does not address that."

Reeve Peter Emon called the numerous Renfrew volunteers great ambassadors for the community. On April 10, Emon, who was sitting as the acting mayor, spoke on the importance of volunteers in the community. He presented certificates to 30 community volunteers and four organization: Renfrew Minor Hockey Association, Upper Ottawa Valley Ringette, Renfrew Minor Ball, Renfrew Soccer and the Renfrew Skating Club. "You have collectively given thousands of hours," said Emon. "You make Renfrew a better place." Council also declared April 15-21 as National Volunteer Week from April 15 to 21 in Renfrew to celebrate the value of volunteers. Before the celebration council observed a moment of silence in memory of Jonathan Pitre and the Humboldt Broncos. New contract Council emerged from a 25-minute in-council session to announce they had reached a deal with the Renfrew Professional Firefighters Association for 2017 to 2026. "It a great labour deal for the town and the firefighters, who were very open to a number of ideas," said Emon, who was pleased with the announcement. "This is a very good contract for both partners." The contract has no increase to the benefit package and a 2.16 per cent increase over a 10year period. • Improvement Two businesses were approved to receive financial aid for repairs. Rick's Pet Store is receiving a Community Improvement Grant of $4,802, or 50 per cent of the project, to upgrade the back facade of his store. Rocky Mountain Crown and Kilt Inc. will get $3,500 to upgrade the sidewalk patio and area as a property improvement grant. • Grants Council approved eight community grants during the meeting for a total of $16,675 of the $19,000 grant budget. New look for the paper arrives this week Starting with this week's edition, readers of the Renfrew Mercury and Arnprior Chronicle-Guide will notice a slightly new look to their local newspaper. While the coverage of local news, sports and features remains the same, the process by which the paper is laid out has been altered with the introduction of the Metroland Central Pagination Centre. The adjustments include a new suite of fonts and headline styles with greater use of white space to make it easier on the eyes. Opinion pieces and columns are more clearly defined with each now featuring individual tags to distinguish them from straight news stories. In the past, this line has been blurred somewhat, making it difficult to differentiate between what has been written as an objective news report - whether council, police or even human interest feature - and what is intended as a commentary on those events. But the biggest change readers will find has been made to the community calendar. With a continued and growing emphasis placed on our website But the biggest www.insideottawavalleychange readers .com, readers are being asked to follow a new prowill find has cess to promote their events. Where in the past, been made to you emailed or phoned in the community with the key information, we have now made events calendar. promotion something of a self-serve process. We'd like to be able to say now, 'If it's on in our community, it's on our website.' Getting your event online is quick, easy and free. Log on to www.insideottawavalley.com/ottawavalleyevents, scroll down and click on 'Post Your Event.' From there, simply fill out the various fields, making sure that your information is accurate. Once you complete these steps, the event just has to be approved by us in order to become available for publication in the print edition of the newspaper. Unfortunately, due to space limitations, we cannot guarantee each and every 'happening' will make it in print. Of course, we know some people are not comfortable with or have access to a computer. You can still contact us (613-432-3655 or 800-884-9195) or email us and we can upload your information to appear online, which also makes it available to us for publication. This is a significant departure for What's Happening, which has been a staple of the paper for many years. But we hope it will provide an additional benefit to local, charitable and non-profit groups by having announcements also appearing online free of charge.

Green party leader should be included in election debates To the editor: 1955: That is the year of the last Ontario election in which any members of provincial parliament were elected who were not representing the three largest provincial parties. In every single election since, every MPP has been elected as a Liberal, Progressive Conservative, or New Democrat (or as a Cooperative Commonwealth MPP). All independents and smaller parties have been shut out electorally. Many factors would be responsible for this political continuity, one of which would be the dominant media coverage exclusive to the three large parties.
• LETTERS & COMMENTARY • l MORE ONLINE Read all our letters at insideottawavalley.com Whether or not this focus is deserved however, is best informed by this question: Why have the three main parties failed to excite more than half of eligible Ontario citizens to vote? Because they are in touch with the interests of only half of Ontario. If the media were to increase its coverage of others, we would see more Ontarians voting as they become aware of the alternatives. One alternative, the Green Party of Ontario, has run candidates in all ridings since the 2000s and now receives public election subsidies from the province's per-vote allowance. The Greens are in higher standing than all the rest of the small parties:

Ontarians have the choice to elect Greens in any riding. Yet there are no assurances from the broadcast consortium that runs the election leaders' debates that Ontario Green leader Mike Schreiner will be included alongside the Liberal, NDP, and PC leaders. Experience implies that the consortium will exclude Schreiner based upon a whim, as there are no written rules or laws that govern elections leaders' debates. Precedent for including Greens in provincial debates would include TVOntario's coverage of the Green party, as well as the Feb. 28 Ryerson University town hall on democracy,
which included the four leaders. British Columbia included its provincial Green leader in debates before the province elected Green MPPs. Greens are now also elected federally, in Prince Edward Island, and in New Brunswick. In 2018, it is now 63 years after the last election when Ontario elected any MPPs outside the three largest parties. The time for a candidate for a smaller party to be given a fighting chance is long overdue. Those who feel that Mike Schreiner should be included in the debates should speak their mind and join over 8,700 signatories to the online nonpartisan petition at fairdebates.ca. When it comes to finding animals, it's not rocket science to know where to look for most of them. If you want to observe a beaver you look in the water. To find a woodpecker, you stare at dead trees. To see a snowshoe hare, you search on the ground. At this time of year, however, if you want to see a common bird that usually frequents the forest floor you might try looking up in a tree. But not just any tree, for in spring ruffed grouse are usually found in trembling aspens. Ruffed grouse, which are commonly called "partridge," are birds of the forest. They are well adapted for life in the north woods. In summer, their feather coats keep their owners hidden with their mottled pattern of brown, black, white, and cream streaks and blotches. This camouflage works exceedingly well when a grouse keeps still. If a predator approaches too closely, a grouse takes off with a thunderous roar of wings, leaving the startled intruder with heart in throat. When snow covers the land, ruffed grouse are able to walk over it because they sport snowshoes. In the fall, elongated scales grow out from the sides of the toes, increasing their surface area just as snowshoes do for our feet. Having the most up-to-date digital information at paramedics' fingertips is not only life-changing but could be life-saving. Once again Renfrew County paramedics are first for a technological breakthrough to improve patient care with a new app to have a patients medical records via an iPad. "It's a tool that we have never had before," said paramedic Jeff Dodge, who helped develop the system. "It is groundbreaking to have this technology, it allows us to really keep up with patient care. It's life-changing and can be lifesaving. Now I think we can take better care of the patients than we ever have." Prehos chief executive officer and co-founder Christian Chalifour describes the Renfrew County paramedics as world leaders. "They come to Renfrew County to see how they do things," said Chalifour. "I feel great and very happy to see the positive comments from the paramedics already." Dodge, who is on the community paramedic response team (CPRU), wanted to find a way to have their medical records managed in a more efficient manner. Each of the 1,000 patients the CPRU serve and treat had their files stored at the paramedic base. If a file needed to be updated it had to be done manually, if something needed to be sent to a doctor they would have to use the fax machine. Dodge went searching for a solution to this problem to integrate medical records and scheduling of the CPRU team. In August of 2017 he was connected with Prehos, a Quebec based company providing a highly advanced technological solution in the field of pre-hospital emergency care. Prehos had two existing products that solved about 85 per cent of the problem. "We looked at the products as collections of Lego blocks that could be reassembled to create a solution for our problem," said Dodge, who worked in software development for 20 years before becoming a paramedic 10 years ago. Dodge worked with the Prehos team, who came to the county to watch the CPRU in action. "It was great to work with Jeff, he is an advance care paramedic
who was also in the software industry. He was really easy to connect with," said Chalifour. "It went very well." Chalifour notes the electronic health record is at the very heart of the Prehos software and had to see the CPRU in action. "We had to understand their issues and problems," said Chalifour. "You needed to be there and live it." A member of the CPRU can now update a patient's file with crucial information such as their vitals, allergies, reaction, contact information, medical history, medicine, send a report to a doctor, take a photo and more. "It's really taken off, we were up to the wall with paper and were asking ourselves how do we manage the paper files," said Dodge. "I think what it does is it allows us to give our patients more efficient care because we have a good patient history." The new system was launched on Tuesday, April 3 and the benefits of the program are already being realized. Dodge was in Pembroke and received a call from the paramedic base about a patient there who had placed a call for a visit. With the old system, this patient's file would have been stored at the base on paper. But on the first day with the new system Dodge was able to pull up the CPRU file on this patient and within two minutes was able to know his full medical history. He was then able to more fully assess them to see if he could treat the case or send them to the hospital. "It was a good live test in the real world on the very first day, the value of that call was immense," said Dodge. "The patient was in Pembroke and the paper file was in Renfrew." The CPRU treats and monitors patients for a wide variety of reasons on a regular basis but value of the new program is already evident for 911 calls says Dodge. "There are regular 911 callers and the value of this becomes immediately apparent," said Dodge. On April 6 paramedics received a 911 call for a patient who was in cardiac arrest. "Because it was a CPRU patient we had the medical background on this patient," said Dodge. "The value of this becomes immediate on the 911 side, the obvious next step is to get it on the 911 side, that's my next mission."

RCI students lead Pitch-In campaign TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com Spring has sprung (despite the forecasted snow). That means it's time to come together to clean up Renfrew after the messy winter. Renfrew council declared April 20 to 29 Pitch-In Canada week, which encourages voluntary action to keep communities clean and beautiful, and restore and maintain a healthy environment. Pitch-In Canada is a national, community-based organization comprised of eco-action and community volunteers, that believes in maintaining a quality environment and encouraging civic pride. Council encourages all citizens to get involved and this year the town is trying something new. The Grade 12 environmental geography class from Renfrew Collegiate Institute is spearheading the town's annual Pitch-In Campaign.

Teacher Michael Wright thinks it's a good tie in with his class as part of their class component is to have a deeper, more meaningful connection with the community. "It's getting out and making a difference in the community," said Wright. "It's easy for them to get out and help." As part of the class students will do a pre and post observation study on the specific areas. The cleanup kicks off for the students on April 20 at 1 p.m. at McConnell Park. So far taking part in the cleanup efforts are: Girl Guides, Boy Scouts, Central Public School, Admaston Public School, Queen Elizabeth Public School, St. Thomas Catholic School, Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School and St. Joseph's Catholic High School. Each school and group has been assigned a certain area and time to clean up. The class has also spoken with a number of other local organizations and business

horoscopes
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Renfrew Timberwolves, entire community support Jersey Day Initiative organizers thankful for Ottawa Valley support TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com The Jersey Day movement to support the Humboldt Broncos was embraced across Canada and had special meaning in Renfrew. On April 6 in a tragic bus crash 16 members of the Saskatchewan hockey team were killed. Laura Westman was born in Renfrew and moved to British Columbia in 2016. She was a member of the Jersey Day organizing team and reached out to the Renfrew Timberwolves for a special photo. "It was about helping both teams heal," said Westman. "Those young men put their feelings aside to reach out and let the Broncos know 'We know what you are going through.' They are
both Humboldt Strong and Wolf Pack Strong." She says the organizers were shocked at the reach of the support for Jersey Day on April 12. Numerous businesses, schools, groups and organizations in Renfrew County supported the day by wearing jerseys from all different sports. "I think the Timberwolves and the whole community showing support to the Humboldt Broncos is so inspiring," said Westman. "I'm not surprised but very humbled by the support Jersey Day received and I really want to thank everyone for participating." She is also working on a video montage of Jersey Day participants from around the Ottawa Valley and is looking for photo submissions via the official event Facebook page.

the No. 1 seed for the elimination games. In the quarter-final, the girls beat the North York Storm 3-2 on goals by Smith, Smart and deRuiter. Sophie Warren, Samarah Jones and Abbey PerraultSanders picked up assists. This set up a semifinal showdown with the Aurora Panthers. Backed by another shutout effort by O'Grady, the Thunder squeaked out a 1-0 win. Halfway through the third, Mila Jones took a feed from Smith and buried the game winner, sending the Thunder to the gold medal game. In the final versus London the Thunder jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Hannah Dubeau and McIntyre. Keely Patrick and Bourgeois assisted on the markers. After London narrowed the margin to 2-1 with a power-play goal, the girls were forced to kill an extended fiveon-three late in the third. After successfully killing the penalties, Kylie Sims blasted a slap shot from the top of the circle to secure the gold medal. Douglas made numerous key saves in the final. The provincial championship was the icing on the cake for the midget girls. The 2017-18 season saw the Thunder win both the Ottawa District regular season and playoff titles, as well as tournament titles at the Barrie Sharkfest in November and the Guelph Winter Classic in December. They also compiled an impressive record with 45 wins, seven ties and only five losses, while scoring 145 goals and allowing only 45 against. An awesome season by an incredible group of resilient and dedicated young women!

It is with mixed feelings that I keyboard this year's last Behind the Glass as it marks an end but the good readers need a rest from my attempts at levity mixed with club news. A huge thanks to my ever patient partner, Marg, and to the understanding Tiffany Lepack, who both tried to minimize my blunders and smooth out the rough edges and most importantly, to Renfrew Mercury that publishes our meagre efforts and supports curling in Renfrew.

Spring always produces mixed emotions especially when it is cold, wet and dreary and resembles winter more than the warmth we were wishing for. Not only that but curling has come to an end and true spring pastimes still seem far away. Even TV curling has given way to hockey playoffs and the boys of summer; although they look as happy as we do wearing their toques, turtlenecks and parkas. Although in retrospect, it has been a very successful season on every front as the club has had a great season and now looks forward to the never ending summer task of repairing a building that is showing its age. Thankfully, the finances are in place and, under the able leadership of the board led by chief planner Dave Anderson, everything looks positive. But before the club goes on summer holidays four events are still on the books. The closing dinner and dance is this Saturday, April 21 and despite the lateness you can probably still reserve tickets with chief organizer, chef and bottle washer, Ben Oakes,

Reunions and the Lumber Jills were deadlocked at 23 with four minutes remaining. The Lumber Jills only managed one bucket (a trey) down the stretch and the Reunions claimed the win 29-26. Mae Donohue showed the least rust, closing with 15 points. Frances/Lemke Cooperators held on, after a 17-13 lead at the half, to defeat the Re-

Renfrew Eye Clinic hit a regular basket and two treys to erase the deficit and send the game to overtime at 31-31. The Cooperators tied the game at 35-35 with two

A charity fundraiser for McKay Manor, an alcohol and drug related problems centre, will benefit from a charity fundraiser in the name of Chris Walsh, held this spring at Madawaska Golf Course. and other mental illnesses should receive more funding and be treated similar to physical illnesses such as cancer. Walsh was more than an addict, too. He was a fairly decent golfer; invested in a good set of clubs; spent quite a bit of time working on his swing. "He loved golf and respected the facility (at Madawaska)," Swaine said. "I don't know how many times I dropped him off there." The cost to play in the inaugural Swing in the Memories of Chris Walsh is $75 per person, which includes cart and awards for top teams. Hole prizes and a raffle draw are also included. The second anniversary of Chris Walsh's tragic death was last week on, Easter Monday. Now the family is ready to honour his memory with an event that occupied much of his time: a golf tournament. "He would think it would be a good idea," said Diane Swaine, his mother. "He spent a lot of time at Madawaska Golf Club. They were very good to Chris, very kind to him." Held at Madawaska on June 2, rain or shine at 1 p.m., the Swing in the Memories of Chris Walsh is a four-person scramble style tournament that caps off with a barbecue dinner. Registration deadline is May 25. Money raised will go to Mackay Manor, Renfrew county's addiction treatment centre for men (soon to open to women as well). Walsh was killed when hit by a taxi on Russett Drive in the early morning hours of April 2, 2016. The driver was sentenced to six months in jail in what proved a high-profile case. Swaine has spoken openly about her son's struggle with addiction, and would like participants and the wider community to learn more about Mackay Manor and the services available to Arnprior residents. However, it is crucial that people admit they are addicts; that is the first step. It is also time that society realizes addiction is not a moral failing but a sickness. Addiction

Share your special moments with your friends and our readers with an announcement in Social Notes.
Eileen passed away peacefully at home by the Madawaska River after a lengthy illness that she met with courage and dignity. Dearly loved and missed by her husband of 48 years Ken, daughter Tricia Clouse, son-in-law Chris Clouse, grandchildren Carson, Kennedy and Ryder; sisters Nancy (Keith Blackmur), Doreen Armstrong and Marion Armstrong. Predeceased by her parents Willard and Evelyn Armstrong (nee Gunter) of Jemseg, NB. Eileen was raised on a farm in New Brunswick where she learned the traits of hard work, selflessness and devotion to family, qualities she put to good use to create vibrant and loving homes as the Canadian Forces moved our family across Canada and Germany for over 20 years. In addition to banking and retail careers, with skill and determination Eileen kept the home fires burning during Ken’s many absences. Tricia will always remember the remarkable Halloween costumes and elaborate Birthday parties created for her by Eileen. Although quiet by nature, Eileen readily made friends who unfailingly remarked on her Maritime sense of humour and remarkable memory for their family details. Eileen was especially happy and proud to watch the growth and accomplishments of her daughter and family. A celebration of Eileen’s life will be held Saturday April 21st, 2018 from 1 - 3:00 PM at Beechwood Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, 280 Beechwood Ave. Ottawa, ON to which all our friends are invited. At Eileen’s request a private burial will take place afterwards. In lieu of flowers donation to your favourite charity appreciated. Tributes at www.beechwoodottawa.ca

Spencer, Cheryl Passed suddenly but peacefully in her sleep during the early morning of April 10th, with her husband by her side. Survived by her loving & adoring husband Colin. Survived by sister Heather (Pieter) of Harrowsmith and her parents Edward and Yvonne of Perth. Cheryl was born in Toronto but quickly made it back to Ottawa. Her love of horses started early with her running down the street as a toddler to see horses. She completed her BA (Economics) at Carleton University and was also an accomplished equestrian rider. Always wanting to learn more she recently attained her real estate licence. When starting work after university, instead of buying a car with her first pay cheque, she bought a farm in Newburgh where she ran horse camps and lessons and influenced many young girls’ lives at Raspberry Ridge Farms. She relocated the animals (and herself) to the Almonte location just over 2 years ago to be with Colin. Cheryl never turned away any 2 or 4 legged creatures that needed help. She will be always remembered as a loving nurturer and whose greatest passion was helping others. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Almonte Civitan on Saturday April 21st from 2pm to 5pm. If desired donations may be made in her memory to LAWS (Lanark Animal Welfare Society). In lieu of cut flowers please give a plant or a tree that we may plant in her honour in one of her many gardens at the farm or at the cottage in Haliburton. “She leaves us rich in memories.” Funeral Arrangements Entrusted Into The Care Of C.R. In loving memory of my Husband
Doug Doucette who passed away April 13th 2014 We are sending a dove to heaven with a parcel on it’s wings, Be careful when you open it, it’s full of beautiful things. Inside are a million kisses, wrapped up in a million hugs. To say how much we miss you, and to send you all our love. We hold you close within our hearts, and there you will remain. To walk with us throughout our lives, until we meet again.

They say there is a reason, They say that time will heal. But neither time nor reason, Will change the way we feel. For no one knows the heartache, That lies beneath our smiles. No one knows how many times, We have broken down and cried, We want to tell you something, So there won’t be any doubt, You’re so wonderful to think of, But so hard to live without. Always in our hearts and thoughts. Love Bonnie, Shannon, Mike, Ryan, Heather, Matthew, Sierra and Aiden.

IN MEMORIAM
OBST, Wanda - In memory of a dear, fun and loving sister and aunt, who was taken tragically in a car accident, April 23, 2003. Time passes… our grief remains… You can shed tears that she is gone or you can smile because she has lived. You can close your eyes and pray that she’ll come back, or you can open your eyes and see all she’s left. Your heart can be empty because you cannot see her, or you can be full of the love you shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday, or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember her and only that she’s gone, or you can cherish her memory and let it live on. You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back, or you can do what she’d want; Smile, open your eyes, love and go on. Forever in our hearts… Deb, Doug and Erin

Valley Animal Rescue - Grist Mill Colony and Others! This is an update on the Grist Mill Colony; some of you might remember the story in the early summer about a colony of approximately 20 semi feral cats and kittens which were living on a farm in the Douglas area. Two lovely senior ladies were desperately trying to provide food and medical care to the colony. Many of the cats and kittens were sick, some were injured, and some were infested with worms, respiratory problems and ear mites. Some of the females were pregnant while still themselves kittens. This was too much for these ladies and they contacted Valley Animal Rescue. We committed to help these ladies care for the Grist Mill Colony. We began by providing food and we still provide food to the colony. We have trapped some 16 cats and kittens and provided medical care. We partnered with the Renfrew Animal Hospital and started to sterilize (spay/neuter), vaccinate and treat for all internal and external parasites and other infections that were present. This is a huge undertaking for a small rescue which is a registered charity and foster based; with no support from the government. All our members are volunteers and they are the ones that trap the cats and kittens to take them to the vet and foster parents who are again volunteers that nurse these animals back to health and socialize them for adoption. The program is working; we have placed 13 of these cats/kittens into their forever homes. We have only had to take three cats back to the colony as they could not be socialized and placed in a home environment. We have only 4 cats left to be trapped and vetted. We have another semi feral colony in Renfrew which we are doing the same process; some 12 cats/kittens have been adopted from this colony to date. We are also helping the Calabogie Stray and Feral Cat Program as well taking in 3 of their cats this winter. We are reaching out to concerned individuals and businesses in the community to help us end the cycle of suffering and misery for these animals. We promote kindness, mercy, compassion and respect for all living creatures. We always hope they get adopted and find their forever home. Spring always brought one or two tramps to the house Their appearance at the family dinner table brought fear and pity, Mary Cook writes
Winter had given way to spring. The fields were bare of snow, and the West Hill was showing signs of new grass, where always it first appeared when the seasons changed. Just before the West Hill, the train tracks curved around a bend in our lower field, and if I
stood behind the barns, close to the silo, I could see the train slow down to make the turn. That time of year, when the signs of spring were all around me, I would go to that place in the barnyard and watch. The train-whistle farther down the track could be

heard clearly, and that's what would take me to that place to see yet another sign that winter was over and done with. In the winter, the tramps travelled alone, but when the cold season had passed, I could sometimes see two or sometimes three sitting on top

of the boxcars. My sister Audrey said they travelled alone in the winter because the chances of anyone feeding more than one were pretty slim, as often the pantries were getting low in just about every farm in the Valley. I doubted that to be true, because we always had ample meals, and I never knew Mother to turn away anyone at the door looking for something to eat. Come spring, and the pattern changed. As soon as the train slowed for the curve, one or two would jump off and head up to our house. There was hardly a day went by, that we couldn't expect to see Mother serve up a couple extra plates of food and pack two brown paper bags with sandwiches before sending the tramps back on their way. It wasn't unusual to see the same face once or twice during the year. And the word must have travelled that "up in that log house on the hill, the woman is pretty fussy, you better wash your hands in the creek before you wrap on the door," because they were always spotlessly clean when they came. Always, of course, just before our noon meal. Many of them looked no older than my brother Emerson. When Audrey told me they were what were called "home boys",
MARY COOK Column young orphans sent out from England and Scotland to work on the farms in the Valley, my heart ached for them. Many of them talked in an accent that wasn't familiar to me, and they always called Mother "maam" and Father "sir". They didn't talk much. It looked to me like they were anxious to fill their bellies and get on their way. We never knew their names, because we had been warned by Mother that unless they gave their names to us, we weren't to ask. As soon as the last bite was tucked away, they would wait for Father to rise from the table, and they too would stand, and reach out a hand to shake, and say their thanks. Then they would ask Father and Mother if there was any little chore they could do to help pay for their meal. Of course, with three strapping boys, there were few jobs that they couldn't handle. But Father knew the tramps wanted to show their appreciation by lending a hand. They might be
asked to fork hay from the hay mow, or sweep out the barn, but never would they be given a job that would keep them away from the next train coming through the Valley. I looked at the tramps through eyes of both fear and pity. They were people I knew were not from Northcote, and so were strangers. My heart ached for the loneliness I could see in their eyes, and I could sense the hunger in their stomachs. That early spring day, I followed the tramp outside after his meal. I walked beside him as far as the silo. He ruffled my hair and with the bag of lunch under his arm, reached out to shake my hand just as he had done with Father. I felt I had to say something, and so I asked, "Where are you going to go?" He looked off over the far fields of our farm, down the tracks beside the West Hill, and said, "Wherever the next train takes me." Interested in an electronic version of Mary's books?
