Douglas woman honoured with provincial award TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com Faye Cassista is one of only 20 people in all of Ontario who were recently honoured for their work in a trying field. Cassista, who hails from Douglas, is the recipient of the Attorney General's Victim Services Awards of Distinction. She received the award in a special ceremony April a 12. The award recognizes exceptional achievements of dedicated professionals, organizations and volunteers working to raise awareness of victims' issues, advocate on their behalf and provide support when victims need it most. "I am honoured and humbled to be recognized with other likeminded people who support victims of crime," said Cassista. "I am very honoured to be a part of it." Lisa Oegema, executive director of Victim Services of Renfrew County, nominated Cassista for the award, describing her colleague as an outstanding worker. "She works very hard to assist people in the worst times of their life," said Oegema. "She works in the shadows and it's important she

be recognized for the hard work and difference she makes. She goes above and beyond to help others." Oegema put Cassista's name fforward nine months ago and the pair hadn't thought of it since. "I was very surprised and quite taken back," said Cassista. John Yakabuski, MPP for Renffrew - Nipissing - Pembroke was also at the ceremony and speaks very highly of Cassista. "She really takes her job to heart and helping people means a great deal to her. She's using her skills and talents the best she can to help other people," said Yakabuski. "Faye has been recognized ffor the services she has provided ffor so many years and she is one of only a few who gets recognized." Since 2002, Cassista has worked with Victim Services of Renfrew County and says she enjoys helping other people. She is the program co-ordinator and is the lead direct service staff for high risk domestic, sexual assaults, homicides and human trafficking victims. "I see a real need for services like this, my nature is to give back and help people," said Cassista. "It's been a wonderful place and it

A press release notes Cassista uses an empowerment approach to work with individuals to restore their sense of value and help them move forward in their lives. "It's about honouring what the client needs, it's not about me," said Cassista. "It's about empowering them to make those small steps, hopefully they can make the bigger ones down the road, maybe they haven't had that choice bef fore."

She also volunteers with the Pembroke and Laurentian Valley Handi Bus and admits she is always doing something, even doing relief shifts at the Bernadette McCann House. Cassista enjoys working in what some may consider a tough job. "It's a really trying field but I ffeel good to be able to help women, children or men in a safe environment," said Cassista. "It is one stepping-stone to making positive choices."

PROVINCIAL ELECTION

Jackie Agnew nominated as Ontario Liberal candidate for Renfrew - Nipissing - Pembroke Local town councillor Jackie Agnew was nominated April 7 as the Ontario Liberal Party candidate for Renfrew - Nipissing - Pembroke. "I have dedicated my life to social justice and improving mental health services. I hope to be able to do more for our community at the provincial level as your MPP, working on Premier Kathleen Wynne's team," said Agnew in a release. "My vision for our riding is a place with fair wages, where affordable housing available for everyone, a mental health care is easily accessible, education is a priority, small businesses have a voice and tourism is strong. With free tuition, ffree prescription medication, a $15 minimum wage and major investments in

care, the Ontario Liberal government has the policies in place to deliver on this vision." Agnew brings political experience as a municipal councillor since 2014, in Bonnechere Valley Township. For the past eight years she has worked as program co-ordinator for housing and homelessness with the Renfrew County Housing Corporation. She also worked for the Renfrew County District School Board as both a school support councillor and educational assistant. She served on the United Way board of directors for W ffour years and recently started a local mental health task force. Agnew and her husband, Steve, live in the vil-

lage of Eganville. They are the proud parents to three children between them and one grandchild. Both are very active in their community and can be found assisting with many charity events. Agnew is the 11th sitting municipal elected official to run for the Ontario Liberal Party in 2018. Under the leadership of Wynne, the Ontario Liberal W Party has a plan that is creating opportunity and fairness during this period of rapid economic change and uncertainty. Ontario's economy is growing, but too many families are not experiencing the benefits of that growth and feel they can't get ahead. That's why the Ontario Liberal plan has stepped up to raise the minimum

wage to $15 an hour, and to invest in care, including by providing free prescription drug coverage for children and youth, and soon for seniors; by making tuition ffree for 225,000 students; and by building 100,000 afffordable child-care spaces, and committing to delivering free preschool. The Conservatives have vowed to undo the minimum wage increase because no matter who their leader is, it is the same old Conservative Party. While a Liberal government is focused on investing in care and providing better supports for caregivers, the Conservatives remain focused on cutting health care and education and jeopardizing the services Ontarians rely on by ffiring 75,000 workers.

The Renfrew detachment of the OPP investigated a road rage incident on Sunday, April 8 and are asking anyone who may have witnessed the encounter to come forward. Officers were called shortly after 11 a.m. by the victim after another driver pulled a knife out following a driving incident at Froat's Street and O'Brien Road in Renfrew, near the Tim Hortons.

The involved vehicles, a blue 1998 Honda CRV and a black 2015 Hyundai Elantra continued down O'Brien Road, through the Walmart parking lot, down Wrangler Road and stopped in the Canadian Tire parking lot. Police arrived and arrested the male suspect. Dion Cruise, 32, of Renfrew was

charged with dangerous driving, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering threats, possession of schedule I substances - cocaine, amphetamine, marijuana, and OxyContin, as well as possession of amphetamine for the purpose of trafficking. Arnprior to restore water rescue services to neighbours DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com Communities surrounding Arnprior without water rescue service will soon see it returned. For the past seven years if someone outside town limits was in trouble on any of the many waterways they were in real trouble. As in not knowing which emergency service provider, if any, would come to their aid. A recent example was on the Madawaska River near Calabogie on Feb. 25. A kayak tipped and a man fell into the river. He made it to an island in the river, but his kayak was gone and he had no cellphone. After yelling for more than an hour, someone called 911. "He was wet, hypothermic and nightfall was coming," fire Chief Jeff Crawford told Arnprior council at the April 9 meeting. "He would have been in serious trouble if not rescued. Arnprior water rescue team was on scene within half an hour and had the man safely to shore within 15 minutes." However, Arnprior is the only municipality in the area with a rescue. Others used to pay an annual fee plus case-by-case costs when emergencies arose. That practice ended in 2011 when the town's former chief stopped service. Other municipalities were not paying the annual fee. The new policy doesn't sit well with Crawford and the current council. They agree that Arnprior residents are top priority, but helping neighbours in distress should be done where possible. "The Arnprior Fire Department's highest priority will always be to protect the lives and property within the town of Arnprior," he said. "However, as chief, I am confident that we have sufficient numbers of trained members to offer water rescue to neighbouring municipalities and protect the town as well." The town will approach several municipalities townships of Greater Madawaska, McNab/Braeside, Horton, Town of Renfrew, and City of Ottawa - to resume services. It will charge an annual fee of $1,000 to cover administrative and related costs and $465 per hour during an incident. Wording in the agreement indemnifies Arnprior and its agents. If it doesn't respond, Arnprior won't be held liable.

Tobacco Tax Act. He was released from custody on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on May 2. If you have any information related to this case you are asked to contact Const. Jason Golds at the Renfrew OPP, 613-4323211.

On April 18 unions across Ontario rallied in support of 75,000 hospital workers who are without a contract. At Renfrew Victoria Hospital (RVH) members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) held an information session during their lunch hour. Debbie Howes, president of CUPE 1548, noted the session was in support of the central group and not against the local hospital. "We have a good relationship with RVH, we love our hospital," said Howes. R "We are supporting the central negotiating committee." The local CUPE has a wide array of members from registered practical nurses to housekeeping and Howes says it encompasses everyone other than registered nurses. The provincewide movement was also unique as, according to a press release, CUPE, Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Healthcare and Unifor have 'formed an alliance and are mobilizing together to push Ontario hospitals to treat the hospital workers

Let the games begin Elections are always an exciting time for our industry but for community newspapers such as Metroland, municipal elections are the bread and butter. Municipal government is closest to the people and can have the biggest impact on how communities are shaped. With the winds of change in the air, we anticipate a full slate of candidates throwing their hats into the ring this spring. Next week, candidates can start filing their nomination papers for seats on local school boards and municipal councils. Those interested can file for nom- Changes have ination between May 1 and been made in July 27, which has been shortened by 120 days from order to increase the 2014 election guidelines. According to informatransparency in tion released last week the local election under the Municipal Elections Act, changes have process. been made in order to increase transparency in the local election process. In addition to the campaign period, these new rules require candidates to open up a bank account before incurring any expenses or accepting financial donations. As well, the limit for contributions has been extended to $1,200 (from $750) and contributions from corporations and trade unions are not permitted. Finally, there will also be a limit to contributions a candidate and their spouse can make to their own campaign. Candidates should also be aware that contributions and expenses can only be accepted or incurred during the campaign period. A guide outlining all of these rules for candidates will be released this month and is available at www.ontario.ca/municipalelections. Another valuable resource are municipal clerks. We applaud all of those who consider putting their names forward in this October's election. Running for a position on a local school board or council is not for the faint of heart and requires a lot of time and dedication to the community. There are countless meeting responsibilities and public appearance expectations, and it's also important to remember that councils are elected by and represent the interests of the community. And thank you to all of our local politicians who currently sit on municipal councils in Renfrew, Arnprior and surrounding areas.

• LETTERS & COMMENTARY • Special thanks To the editor: In this fast-paced world where everyone is busy with personal and professional commitments, it takes a caring individual to volunteer their time and energy to organizations in their communities. Fortunately for the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS), there are approximately 130,000 caring people who have chosen to share their time with us. This National Volunteer Week was an opportunity to recognize the incredible volunteers in Renfrew County. From selling daffodils during our April campaign, to helping at Relay For Life or assisting with the Git'Er Done Mud Run, our volunteers do it all. Maybe they drive cancer

patients to their medical appointments; share experiences as a cancer survivor with others facing a similar diagnosis through our peer support programs; or perhaps they advocate to your local government for healthy public policies. Whatever role our volunteers take on, we are making an impact because of their dedication and compassion. During a year of transformation at CCS, we are so grateful for our volunteers' continued commitment and passion to our cause. It's thanks to our volunteers that CCS has been able to continue to deliver on our mission from coast-to-coast. Our volunteers enable us to invest in the best cancer research across the country, provide trusted cancer infformation and compassionate support services to peo-

Not part of the job To the editor: This year’s topic for the National Day of Mourning is violence and harassment, a daily reality for far too many workers in Canada. Both are preventable, and should never be seen as “just part of the job." That’s why this Day of Mourning, Canada’s unions are asking our gov-

ernment to do more to prevent and stop workplace violence and harassment. Workplace violence isn’t just physical assault or attacks. It also includes threatening behaviour, verbal or written threats, harassment and verbal abuse. It can happen once, or be part of a pattern. All workers can experience violence and harassment on the job, but there are many factors — such as working with the public, with money, where alcohol is served, or in isolation — that leave some workers at risk. We will not be holding our usual ceremonies at their monuments in Renfrew and Pembroke, but we ask the public to acknowledge the day and remember those workers injured or killed on the job Renfrew & District Labour Counci

To the editor: I know many would wish that the discussion about a pool would disappear, but as someone who has lived in Renfrew for many years but is originally from the city, I think that there is another aspect that should be considered. The majority of people are really looking forward to the expansion of the 417 to four lanes because that will make Renfrew even more accessible in a shorter time for people from Ottawa. The hope is that many will choose to live in Renfrew and commute to Ottawa. Why should they move to Renfrew? What do we have to offer? On Feb. 20, 2018, CBC news wrote about Goderich - a small town with a population of 8,000, which was losing doctors and was unable to attract the professionals to the town. Like Renfrew, they had a physician recruiter who realized that Goderich had to have something special to offer to these professionals to move there. As a community, including the politicians, they set out to raise $6 million to build a YMCA facility, complete with a pool and ice pad. The community worked together and raised the funds and then leveraged the provincial and federal governments for money. They now have 18 doctors and other professionals and a beautiful athletic facility. They also raised funds for a clinic. As Dr. Varrin said, Renfrew Victoria Hospital has been very successful - we have a fantastic healthcare centre, mostly thanks to fundraising and creative thinking. We need to increase our tax base, which will allow for the infrastructure repairs that we so desperately need. We do not have industries coming to our town, but we have the potential for an increased population who will spend their money here if we have something to offer. Why not hire someone who will be dedicated to raising funds for the pool? Perhaps the town could apply for a grant to pay the salary of this person. We owe it to ourselves, our children and our parents to help prevent illness. Pat McGregor Renfrew

To the editor: Re: 'Mackay Manor seeks support for women's addiction facility,' April 12 Renfrew Mercury. I think it's great that Mackay Manor and Bernadette McCann House (and the other addiction centres in Renfrew County on the committee who have put their time, dedication and support on this project also) are so passionate about a muchneeded women's shelter in Renfrew County. May I please clarify something in this article? I lived in Mackay Manor in 1987 for eight months and there were also other women who lived there during that time before it stopped being coed. Please, let's not forget that very important part of Mackay's history and the women and men who worked there during that time and so graciously gave their time, love, courage, hope and belief in both the men and women who lived there. It was the start of a new life journey for many of us and is so very appreciated. Linda Moores Renfrew

Revitalization of RCI entrance, administration area on the way School board trustee announces exciting updates coming at RCI SUSAN HUMPHRIES It has been a long time coming, but earlier this month the board approved a project that will greatly enhance the function and appearance of the student and administration area at the main entrance of the Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI)/Renfrew Collegiate Intermediate School (RCIS) building. Several years ago, prior to adding the Grade 7 and 8 classes, the main entry area was changed to make it more accessible and secure. This included moving the administration team, including principal and vice-principals, to the main level and changed the way that students, staff and the public entered the building. Now to further improve

the flow and the look of the entryway, a "bump-out" will be constructed with lots of windows to allow for natural light to enter the area. The additional space will provide an area for students to congregate and work on projects, as well as enlarge the administration area and add a meeting room. This project should get underway mid summer and be completed by the end of the year. An office renovation was also approved for Fellowes High School in Pembroke. Fellowes Fresh Food Project: Teachers Sandi Theilheimer and Heather Witt, along with several students, provided us an overview of an initiative at Fellowes High School, their "Fresh Food Project." This project includes utilizing the greenhouse, which was already on site, and adding a substantial garden area on the school property. Students learn how to plant, care for and harvest their own food, which they use in a variety of ways, including a "buffet" of delicious veg-

etables available at a low cost to all students in the school. This innovative team of teachers has accessed funding from a variety of organizations and has engaged the parents and community, as well. They have been able to integrate a wide variety of students through various curriculum connections that have proven to be motivating to many students. Four main student outcomes have been identified: 1) integration and inclusion of students and curriculum; 2) experiential learning opportunities -- actual work experience and seeing how this connects to the curriculum, often opening up new possibilities and areas of interest for students; 3) leadership skills development; 4) improvement of well-being and overall mental health by being outdoors or in a warm greenhouse, working with the soil and seeing things grow. Students may also receive a co-op credit for being peer helpers. Future plans include applying for a specialist high skills Major in food processing, encour-

As with the first two versions of this legislation, the Ministry of Correctional Services Amendment Act (Parole), 2018 would also require electronic monitoring for offenders who are convicted of sexual or domestic assault. "As residents of Renfrew County know full well, the Ministry of Correctional Services Act currently allows for inmates to be granted parole even when they refused to sign their certificate of parole. The triple homicides which took place in the riding in the fall of 2015 was just such a scenario," said a release from Yakabuski's office. Earlier versions of this bill received cross-party support, but unfortunately they died on the order paper when the house was prorogued. "I did not want to have to reintroduce this PMB," said Yakabuski. "From the beginning I have encouraged the government to take the measures in this bill and make it part of a more comprehensive law and order package. However, years have gone by since Basil Borutski's rampage ended the lives of Anastasia Kuzyk, Nathalie Warmerdam and Carol Culleton and I felt compelled to put forward these common sense changes again." Yakabuski noted he often Y hears from residents who want greater accountability placed on parolees and that the government needs to respond to this. Keeping victims of violence and sexual assault safe is an issue above politics and therefore should be front and centre on the government's agenda - years shouldn't go by with nothing being done, he said.

This female American Kestrel is doubly lucky; she caught a Short-tailed Shrew and found a dead tree that might provide a nest site.

The hole-y birds are back Michael runtz writes about why birds come back early

MICHAEL RUNTZ Column all cavity-nesting species. Among the first flycatchers to return are eastern phoebes (which nest in crevices on cliffs or in other sheltered sites) and great crested flycatchers, which are cavity-adopters. The first migratory thrushes back are eastern bluebirds, which, of course, nest in cavities. Even small owls are cavity-adopters; while eastern screech owls stay here year-round, the tiny northern saw-whet owls are the first migratory owls to return. A few mammals live in holes in trees. Both northern and southern flying squirrels live in cavities, which leaves even fewer homes up for grabs when the cavity-adopting birds return. There is even a hawklike bird that nests in cavities. American kestrels are small falcons that perch along country roadsides on telephone wires, slowly pumping their tails as they scan fields for small prey such as meadow voles and, later in summer, grasshoppers. It should

come as no surprise that kestrels return early because they nest in cavities, usually sizeable ones in larger trees, often created when rot sets in where a branch broke off. Kestrel numbers have dropped in recent years, and it's possible that the lack of suitable nest sites is one reason. Increasingly dead trees are being cut down for firewood or being removed as new developments spring up in rural areas. As kestrels nest at the edge of woodlands, not in the interior, they are particularly affected by a lack of suitable trees. But there is good news for kestrels and other cavity-adopting birds. Most readily accept artificial cavities in the form of nest boxes. Birdhouses can be purchased or can be easily built from plans available on the internet. If you put up nest boxes, be sure to keep them clean and predator-proof. And if you put them up, be sure to do so early in the season. Then sit back and watch as the hole-y wars begin! With the current weather, it seemed as if we turned back the calendar a month. The recent ice storm has played havoc with trees and with many birds, especially those that depend on flying insects for their livelihood. In particular, many of the tree swallows that had returned may not have survived, due to a lack of food. So why do tree swallows come back so early if their meals might be compromised by bad weather? Why not wait for conditions to improve, as do other swallows such as barn and bank? The answer is simple: they come back early in order to attain a good nesting site. Tree swallows, as their name suggests, nest in trees, but unlike most birds, they don't build nests on branches. They build theirs inside abandoned woodpecker homes and other cavities in trees. Cavities are not abundant, and the demand for them is high so that many of the cavity-adopters stay here for the winter (blackcapped chickadees and white-breasted nuthatches are notable examples) or return early in spring, as do tree swallows. When one looks at different groups of birds, often the first members back in each are those species that nest in cavities. The first returning ducks are common and hooded mergansers and wood ducks --

Renfrew Coun. Mike Coulas and Coun. Arlene Jamieson sport some of the recently revealed merchandise for Renfrew's Bluegrass Festival July 12, 13, 14 and 15 at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre.

Bluegrass committee gears up for festival First year for town to host event July 12, 13, 14 and 15 TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com Planning for the first ever Renfrew Bluegrass Festival is well underway and organizers are excitedly searching out volunteers to help with the event. For 23 years the event was held in Horton Township but the reins were recently handed over to the Town of Renfrew. This year the festival will take place at the MaTe-Way Activity Centre July 12, 13, 14 and 15 with some of the biggest names in bluegrass travelling to Renfrew. Renfrew councillors Mike Coulas and Arlene Jamieson say the process has been educational for them, noting they have received assistance from Bob Johnston and his team of dedicated volunteers. Coulas proudly notes this year the Town of Renffrew will have four major events: Bluegrass Festival, Saw Tech, Taste of the Valley and FrewTober. To accommodate the approximately 700 campers at Ma-Te-Way, the town has invested $50-60,000 to

prepare a 14-acre field that was previously unused. The goal is to recoup $40,000. Coulas admits there are some extra costs with this being the first year. "It's the biggest investment with possibly the biggest risk," said Coulas. "We have invested money for the future." "But there is the potential to expand," added Jamieson. "And from the economic development standpoint it will draw 8-10,000 people and some will come in and camp all week." April is National Volunteer Month and the Bluegrass Festival is in need of volunteers. Forms are available on the town weba site www.renfrew.ca under the Bluegrass section. Some of the volunteer positions that are available include: ticket takers, greeters, garbage collectors and shuttle bus drivers. "It's a great way to give back to our community. This is a big event, why not be a part of something exciting," said Jamieson. "If you like music and people it's a great opportu-

nity and it's fun," added Coulas. "All the volunteers get a T-shirt and admission." Jamieson says they appreciate the town's volunteers and need them to help out. "Renfrew has a number of people who are very generous with their time and we want them here and we promise them a good, entertaining time," said Coulas. There is no age restriction for the volunteers and high school volunteers are welcome. Community organizations are also involved, including Masons, who are hosting the Saturday morning breakfast. "We are doing the best we can to make it a community event and we are really excited," said Jamieson. "The most important thing is the music and it is good music. If you are not a bluegrass fan you will be by the end of it. It's the best," added Coulas. For more information on volunteering or Bluegrass Festival merchandise contact Jennifer Charkavi at town hall: 613-4322414 ext. 104.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

CD featuring Valley performers benefits VHR Music comes full circle. Denny Welburn and more than 30 local artists donated their talents for a recent fundraiser for Valley Heritage Radio (VHR). Welburn, who is also a DJ at the station, came up with the idea of creating a CD featuring more than 30 local artists performing a great mix of songs. "The CD is wonderful, jampacked with Valley talent," says a press release. Welburn approached station manager Jason Marshall with the idea of donating all the proceeds from the sales of the CD to Valley Heritage Radio. "He truly believes the station is something special for local artists, as they receive regular airplay on VHR," says the release. "As a way of giving back, he wants the station to benefit from

the efforts of local musicians, as we've always been a champion of local talent." Marshall said he was thrilled, proud, and humbled by the gesture. "Because playing local artists is what we do. Not just because they call the Ottawa Valley home, but because they are amazingly talented musicians, singers and songwriters," said Marshall. VHR worked with Welburn to host a CD launch party for the CD, titled Goodtime Heart, at the Cobden Legion. "It was sold out, for an afternoon of good times, good music and good friends," Marshall added. CDs, $20, can be purchased at the station on Burnstown Road, at Guitars Plus in Renfrew and Hurstys restaurant in Shawville.

First Eganville Scouts enjoy visit from Algonkin Fly Fishers NIC SMITHSON In March at the Grace Lutheran Church, the Algonkin fly fishers hosted an evening with the First Eganville Scouts, led by Bill and Margret Matheson, showing a short picture presentation of a fly-in fishing trip of two of its members, Darwin Burgess and Larry Tamosetis, to the Sutton River in the Polar Bear Provincial Park near Hudson Bay. Afterwards they then demonstrated how to tie a ffly to the scouts. With supervision from club members, the scouts W had an opportunity to tie the fly with materials provided by the club, using personal equipment provided by the members. The membership draws from all over the county. I'm not sure who had the most fun, the members or the Scouts. One does like to pass on the skills of their respective hobbies. The Algonkin Fly Fishers were founded in 2003 by Tom Adamchick and Murray Bimm. Throughout T the fall and winter we gather to share tips, tactics, tie fflies and talk about trips. All experience levels are welcome. For further inffo visit algonkinflyfishers.com or call 613-628-3336.

Our past is our link to the future. The recreation department of Renfrew Victoria Hospital celebrate its heritage every year with a week of various activities. The hospital invited the Grade 3 classes of Our Lady of Fatima School to attend an afternoon of bread making, BeaverTails and quilting with their continuing care patients. The activities were led by hospital volunteers. Debby Johnston, Denise Washington and Bernie Larocque taught the students how to stitch a shamrock onto a fabric coaster. They brought their finished project home with them. Jane Gaul and Roy Brown had the students make BeaverTails for themselves and the patients. Everyone enjoyed the tasty fried treat. Teresa Connaughan and Bonnie Nolan had the students and patients making bread from scratch. The students greatly enjoyed the hands-on activity. Teresa also made 40 mini loaves for the students to take home to enjoy. The bread made that day was given to all the patients as a special treat. There is nothing like warm bread, fresh out of the oven and buttered! The Grade 6 students from the Adopt A Grandparent program were invited for an afternoon of square dancing. Hospital volunteers led the activity. Lola Arnes called the squares with music provided by Dalton Hein, Boyd Briscoe, Frieman Virgin and Murray Kohlsmith. Darlene Meleskie organized the square dancers. Each student was paired with a square dancer and the fun began! The students did an excellent job of following direction and there were many smiles and laughter. The patients enjoyed watching the activity and remembering the squares and dances that they attended years ago. Roxanne Nolan organized the two days and was happy to see how much the students enjoyed learning the activities of the past and how the patients enjoyed the enthusiasm and the interest of the students.

Back in the '30s, family's first 'car' cost only a few loads of gravel, Mary Cook writes Father was spending a lot of his spare time in the drive shed. The snow was gone, the days were warm, and now he had to think about getting the Model T out and running. Since the first sign of winter months ago, the car had been sitting up on blocks, with a horse blanket thrown over the hood. Why any of this took place was beyond me, and why the old car couldn't be just driven in the drive shed and left there until spring was a mystery. Father put the wheels back on, and with the help of my three brothers, lifted the car, and then he kicked out the blocks of wood and the Model T settled down onto the dirt floor of the drive shed. It was a warm Saturday, the yard was still damp, but had dried up enough that father thought the car could be pushed out and worked on outside. I sat on an old kitchen chair on the back stoop to watch, not wanting to get any closer, because I knew, as always there would be a lot of cursing in German, father throwing things around, and general chaos as he tried to get the Model T going after its long winter-sit. The car certainly wasn't much to look at. Only three ffenders matched. One in the front fell off on a trip in to Renfrew, and we used it as a toboggan on the West Hill all winter. Father managed to find a replacement at Thacker's Garage in Renfrew, but it didn't quite fit, and if you stood in ffront of the car and looked, the odd fender seemed to be pointing to the right, so that it always looked like it was heading off in a different direction from the car. Also, father had attempted to paint the fenders, but

MARY COOK Column ran out of paint and the new fender was a brown shade and the others black. Of course there were no windows, only rolled up canvases that failed to shut out rain, high winds or snow when rolled down, mainly because most of the hooks had been lost over the lifetime of the old car. My favourite part of the Model T was the dinnerplate sized hole in the back ffloor, where I could, by sliding down off the seat, see the Northcote Road go whizzing by. If you could call it 'whizzing by' since at top speed father couldn't get it up past 25 miles an hour! Father was looking at the motor. He poked around a bit, took an old oily cloth and wiped here and there. Then he opened the door by the steering wheel and took out the crank. I knew this was where the swearing in German would start, and I knew mother would stay well clear of the yard behind closed doors to the house. Everett was behind the wheel waiting for orders ffrom father to start working the choke. I could hear the car make the odd groan, but nothing else as ffather churned the crank. Everett was ordered to do something with the choke. Father threw his old straw hat to the ground, wiped his forehead with the back of his hand, and went back

to turning the crank. Finally, there was a burst of smoke coming out of the back, father's arm went flying, the crank landed somewhere near the drive shed door, and I thought I could see the Model T rocking from side to side as if gasping for breath. Everett asked father if he should shut it off, and father yelled "let 'er run." He was spent. His face was beet red, his red plaid fflannelette shirt was sticking to his ribs, and I thought he looked 50 years older than when the ordeal started. And I sat on the back stoop and wondered if it was all worth it. I thought just hitching up the buggy and old Nell was a lot easier, and certainly a lot safer. But the old Model T was the first car we ever owned, and I sat on the stoop that day and marvelled at how things always worked out for the best. The car didn't cost us a red cent . we traded loads of gravel to fill a neighbour's culvert, and drove the car home when the job was finished. Imagine! Our very ffirst car, such as it was, traded for loads of gravel and the simple shake of hand. Sitting on the back stoop, I marvelled at the wonder of it all.
