Publisher remembered for humour, dedication

Celebration of Life planned for Saturday, May 5 in Kingston STAFF The Ottawa Valley's community newspaper world has lost one its biggest champions. Derek Walter, retired Metroland publisher, died on Sunday, April 29, following a battle with cancer. He was 76. The Kingston resident had his family by his side. When he retired in 2008, Walter was a West Carleton resident and general manager of eight Ottawa Region Media Group newspapers, including the Arnprior Chronicle-Guide and Renfrew Mercury. At that time, the son of Scottish-born parents was celebrated for his nearly 40-year newspaper career. He began in the business part-time in the mid-1970s at the Arnprior Guide. That job turned to full-time and through the

years his career included positions as a sales manager and assistant editor early on and later positions as editor, publisher and general manager. Some of Walter's first connections with the newspaper industry came through Susan Fenn, daughter of newspaper publisher Gordon Fenn and his eventual wife. She died of cancer in 1986, but not before the two became owners of the Arnprior Guide. They sold the paper in 1985 to Runge Newspapers owner Fred Runge, as the paper was amalgamated with the Arnprior Chronicle to become the Arnprior Chronicle-Guide. When he retired, colleagues said they'd miss his short ties, light-hearted jokes, impish smile and captivating laugh. And he said he'd miss the business and the people he'd encountered in his career. "I've met some fascinating people in all my roles," he said. "The community newspapers are a heart of the communities. They're not trying to be everything to everybody. They're focused on the community they serve."

"I've met some fascinating people in all my roles." – Derek Walter

Derek Walter Jason Marshall was among the many who worked for Walter, and paid a final visit, sharing names and stories from years gone by. "It's sad, for sure, but I'm just very fortunate to have had so many memories with Derek," Marshall said. "For us, it was a sense of humour more than any-

thing else. He was always laughing, and laughing at himself mostly." The publisher who gave him his first job knew many people all over the valley, Marshall said, and was a newsman who cared deeply about telling stories in an unbiased, balanced manner. Walter continued in the pubW lishing business post-retirement having worked with the magazine 'Shoulder to Shoulder.' He loved spending time with ffamily and friends on his pontoon boat, touring visitors around Kingston, and connecting with the local and global community via the HAM radio network. Walter's community involveW ment includes serving as past member of the Arnprior Hospital Board, the Royal Ottawa Hospital Foundation Board, the So-

cial Services Advisory Board, City of Ottawa, and the KGH Board of Governors. He was also a trustee with the Carleton Board of Education for thirteen years (three as chair). His special love was being an active Amateur Radio Operator since 1974 (VE3HRW) and a member of the executive of the Frontenac Emergency Communications Group in Kingston. Walter is survived by his secW ond wife, Monika; his daughter Erin McInnis, (Sheldon), granddaughter, Brielle and grandson Owyn; daughter Karina Zimmerman; (Brad), granddaughter, Susie; extended family daughters; Cathy Dovan (Sebastien), granddaughters Tabatha and Cassidy; Barbara Kern (Fred), grandson Ethan and granddaughter Abbie: Helen Thomas (Ben), grandchildren Malachy, Akasha, Micah, Sapphire, and Christopher Caleb. A celebration of Derek's life will be held on Saturday, May 5, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at James Reid Funeral Home in Kingston. Another is being planned for Renfrew. - With files from Steve Newman, Derek Dunn

streets that connect to Raglan Street South from Plaunt Street to Argyle Street at a cost of $10,666,400, which also includes a $3 million Ministry of Transportation Connecting Link grant. The scope of works for the project includes the sanitary sewers, watermain, streetscaping, including new sidewalk features/landscaping/street furniture (benches, etc.), lights, accessibility upgrades, pedestrian crossovers, and minor upgrades to the storm sewer services (which were replaced in 2000). To deal with the construction downtown the first set of road restrictions has been released from the town. As of April 30 the following restrictions will be in place: Raglan Street

(Hwy 60) and Munroe Avenue signalized intersection will become a Four-way stop. Raglan Street North from Lochiel Street North to Monroe Avenue may have lane reductions with flagging operations. BEI, who was awarded the project, has already started sanitary lateral inspections and will be installing exterior cleanouts where the interior building cleanouts are non-existent or inaccessible. The watermain replacement will start on April 30 on Bridge Street and Raglan Street North and there will be some temporary water outages. Asselin encourages residents to stay up-to-date with the construction updates by visiting the town's website: http://www.renfrew.ca/ and look for the construction emblem on

“We have two seasons - winter and construction season.” – Mike Asselin the right hand side. Residents and businesses can also sign up for construction updates via email. The second major project is construction on Barnet Boulevard from Raglan Street to Eighth Avenue and Part B will see road resurfacing continue to Gillan Road. The project has a price tag of $2,416,546, the town is also receiving just over $1 million from the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund for this work. "(It's) a full reconstruction of the roadway and there is a storm sewer up-

grade," said Asselin. "There's going to be curbs installed and a multi-use pathway, the first thing you will see is the underground work they will be undertaking which includes the storm sewers and sanitary sewers and then they will follow up with curb and road work." One of the most significant changes will be at the Millennium Trail where the grade of the road is going to be raised to soften the slope. There could have been more construction this year from Renfrew County but the town was able to work with them. "There was construction on Raglan Street South proposed by the county for this year," said Asselin. "We did coordinate with them to hold off on that project so that the roads would be passable."

Hike for Hospice Renfrew May 6

TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com All it takes is one small step but it makes a huge difference. The annual Hike for Hospice Renfrew goes on Sunday, May 6 at Ma-TeWay Park and is a major W ffundraiser for the 10-bed palliative care facility. Things get started at 12:30 p.m. and the hike offficially starts at 2 p.m. The fire department and paramedics will be on hand, as well as a teddy bear MASH tent, face painting and lots of little activities. "It's a family and community event, there will be lots of activities for kids and families," said Shane Lambert, fund coordinator at the hospice. "All of the activities are ffree and there will be donation jars on hand. For the first time ever they can accept credit cards on site, which is a nice fea-

ture." Every single dollar raised stays locally and is directed to Hospice Renf frew. The event is a fun day ffor all involved, said Lambert. "You will see a lot of people, you are supporting a great cause and Hospice Renfrew does amazing things, run by a lot of volunteers and a small administration team." He says there are a lot of teams that come back every year. Some have experienced hospice firsthand, others have heard of the good work the agency does in the community and some just like to come out for the fun activities. Last year the event welcomed 900 people to the park and raised $151,000 ffor the facility, which only receives 51 per cent of ffunding from the government and is required to ffundraise the rest. "We rely heavily on our

"Events like this are extremely important to maintain this ffacility and its services." Hospice Renfrew welcomes people from across the area during their last days. "It's for all of Renfrew County, you can use the ffacility free of charge," said Lambert. "A lot of people think it's just Renffrew but it is the entire county." Hospice Renfrew, the ffirst rural hospice in Ontario, officially opened on Jan. 28, 2008 and is marking its 10th anniversary this year. Over the years, it has helped to normalize dying/death. "It's not about dying,

people come here to live their last days," said Lambert. "It is a tough time in life and we help out as much as we can." If you have not signed up there is still time to get in on the fun, as registration is welcome the day of starting at 12:30 p.m. The three-kilometre hike/walk and five-kilometre run will go ahead rain, snow or shine so come prepared. Participants can sign up as an individual, family, a team or sponsor someone. Dogs are also welcomed but must be leashed at all time. For more information on the hike or how to donate contact slamber@hospicerenfrew.ca, call 613-433-3993 or visit www.hospicerenfrew.ca.

The handiwork of Ottawa Valley quilters will bring comfort and warmth to those affected by the recent tragic bus crash in Saskatchewan. Three quilts made with love are being shipped from Renfrew and Horton to Humboldt, Sask., for those reeling from the April 6 bus crash that killed 16 people. The Renfrew and Area Quilt Guild is sending two quilts and the Horton Quilters have already mailed one. Haus of Stitches quilt store in Humboldt originally wanted to make a quilt for each of the 29 people who were on the Humboldt Broncos bus when it crashed on the way to a hockey game. Owner Wendy Toy put a call out for quilts and says so far she has received 400 quilts for family members, first responders, the billet families, hospital workers and anyone affected. She thinks they will need 600 quilts but she is not worried. "It's amazing we have received quilts from across North America and they are just beautiful," said Toy. She expressed her appreciation for the quilts coming from Renfrew and Horton. "Thank you, thank you very much," said Toy. "We appreciate it so much." Martina Evans co-ordinated the project for the Renfrew and Area Quilt Guild. She received 37 squares from the members and offered to piece them together. "Quilts are like a hug," said Barb Stopa, president of the guild. "It provides comfort," added Evans. Barbara Jamieson admits quilters love to give quilts. "You can cuddle into them," said Jamieson. "You can give one to your best friend or someone during a tragedy." The Renfrew group is holding back one unique block that just didn't seem to fit well into the pattern. Members have special plans for it. "We are planning to give it to the NHA Birthplace Museum with a special frame and a note on the quilt," said Evans. Horton chief administration officer Sue Klatt was very impressed with the quilt the Horton quilters put together. "(It's a) beautiful tribute and (I'm) so proud of our ladies for not only donating the material for

these quilts to be made but to contribute hours of love with every stitch to complete a quilt to assist in this initiative," said Klatt in an email. The local quilters donated all of the material and each block was done in the Broncos team colours green, white, yellow and black.

Stolen vehicle recovered at Renfrew school A vehicle was stolen f from a residence on Zion Line in Whitewater Region Township on Saturday, April 21 between 3 and 8 a.m. The vehicle was recovered a short time later in the parking lot of St. Thomas the Apostle school in Renfrew with significant damage to it. The vehicle is a 2000 silver Honda Accord. Const. Jeff Cassidy is continuing to investigate the theft. There are suspects. The Renfrew detachment of the OPP investigated 197 calls for service during the past week.

Domestic violence Arnprior and Renfrew officers investigated seven domestic disputes during the past week. One man was charged with assault; one woman was charged with three counts of breaching probation, two counts of uttering threats and one count of failing to comply with an undertaking; and one man was charged with assault. No

other criminal offences were alleged. If you or someone you know is living in or involved in an abusive relationship, help is available. Contact Bernadette McCann House 24-7 for support, advice or the safety of a shelter at 1-800-2674930. Thefts Two unlocked vehicles in McNab/Braeside Township were entered overnight during the past few days. One victim had video surveillance and the evidence is being reviewed. The suspect is approximately five feet tall, thin, wearing a hoodie and had a backpack on. That theft was in a vehicle on Gillies Street on Friday night, April 13. The other vehicle entered was in a driveway on River Road. In this case the vehicle was inside an

unlocked garage, when it was entered. A box containing a garage door opener was stolen from the vehicle. There is no suspect in this case. The OPP encourage motorists to remove their valuables from vehicles parked for the night. The hassle associated with replacing identification and bank cards is easily avoided by not leaving wallets and purses in unlocked vehicles overnight. Thieves associated with these crimes of opportunity are generally young people looking for loose change and cash, but they will steal small items that are easily sold such as GPS systems, sunglasses and cellphones. Avoid the irritation, just remove valuables and lock your doors!

Shining a light on youth mental health It's being billed as a week of awareness, support, and self-care. Children's Mental Health Week is approaching fast. Taking place from May 7-13, Children's Mental Health Week allows us to bring awareness to the prevalence of mental health issues throughout childhood, the need for government support and funding for community mental health centres, as well as to recognize all those working in and around the children's mental health industry for their hard work and dedication. This week, both Arnprior District High School and Renfrew Collegiate Institute are hosting events centred around youth mental health. As the lead agency for Children's Mental Health, the Phoenix Centre is hosting a launch event on Monday, May 7 from noon to 2 p.m. in Pembroke, downtown in front of the Phoenix Centre building. They will also be looking to partner with local businesses and organizations to raise awareness, organize events, or sponsor events for the week. For an updated Children's Mental Health Week events calendar, visit the Facebook event page 'Children's Mental Health Week - Renfrew County.' This year, the Phoenix Centre's focus for Children's Mental Health Week is 'embracing self care.' Executive director Greg Lubimiv notes: "Mental Health Week is a time that we can focus on just how important mental wellness is for everyone, young or old. In an often stressful and hectic life it is easy to lose track of what we need to take care of our own mental health so we are focusing on reminding everyone to embrace their own self care." Overall, the week will raise awareness about and look at how kids and adults alike practice self-care and promote resiliency. On Friday, May 11 the county will be "shining green for mental health." Individuals, organizations, and businesses are encouraged to wear green that day and to shine green lights on their houses and buildings at night in a show of solidarity across the county. The Phoenix Centre for Children and Families looks forward to working alongside businesses and organizations across the county to raise awareness about mental health issues in children and youth as well promoting positive mental health practices. Let's work together to push forward vital improvements in youth mental health care.

• LETTERS & COMMENTARY • Efforts must be in place to contain gun violence To the editor: With the rise of gun crime and fatalities in Canada sending families into grief and despair, there must be efforts to contain this. Sadly, according to a recent police report, fewer guns are coming over the border illegally but instead are stolen from private homes. We need to protect our communities. A recent article in the paper described Ms. Gallant and her one-trick pony show. The common-sense gun measures are being proposed to crack down on illegal handguns and assault weapons. No one is going to raid farms and the homes of law-abiding hunt-

ers and farmers to take your guns. I just returned from a visit to the States. The rhetoric which I read espoused in that article was just like the hysteria voiced in the U.S. We know how their lax gun laws have worked out down there. I understand the need for farmers to have guns to protect their livestock and chickens. I respect the hunting traditions here in the Valley where you hunt to stock your freezers to feed your families. I realize some folks enjoy target shooting. These laws will not affect those reasons for gun ownership. However, there is no reason for an ordinary citizen to own military assault weapons, stores of ammunition or increased gun magazine capacity. I dare say an AR-15 or AK-47 will

not leave much meat to consume after the deer has been blasted. The Americans have learned to their peril what happens with relaxed gun regulations. More guns mean more gun deaths and toddlers killing their siblings. Have you read the American stats on those deaths? The increased regulations will ensure gun owners are licensed and no one who is a danger to themselves or others is able to get a gun. We have graduated car licenses. Doctors, dentists, hairstylists and other professionals must be licensed to practice. I cannot understand the objection to tight regulations for owning firearms. Police forces were concerned when the Harper government voted down the long gun registry because when going to a do-

mestic disturbance, it would be nice to know if there were guns in the house. Oh, when that vote was called in the House of Commons regarding the Long Gun Registry, I always wondered why our local MP, who feels so strongly about the issue, did not appear in Parliament for the vote! We do not need Canadian NRA-wannabes turning Canada into the freewheeling gun culture of the U.S. When I am down there, I am constantly on guard for anyone who gets angry or loses their temper in traffic or large crowds. Anyone can be carrying "legal," concealed weapons. I worry about my granddaughters who go to school every day. That is not how we want to live in Canada. Mary-Joan Hale Calabogie

A fisherman from afar

Michael Runtz outlines a rare snowy egret sighting One might think that the best days for looking for birds are warm, sunny ones. While it is true that those days are pleasant for looking at birds, it's also true that wet, miserable days often turn up the best birds in terms of relative rarity. On April 25, Kari Kaunisto, a visiting birder from Finland, and I left Ottawa to head to Algonquin Park for a day of birding. It was raining heavily so we decided that while we were on route we would look at rivers and flooded fields for migrating waterfowl and shorebirds. We were driving west from Antrim along old Highway 17 when to our great surprise we spotted a small, white, heron-like bird standing in a flooded field. There were only a few possibilities of what the bird might be, but because

MICHAEL RUNTZ Column it was so close, even without binoculars it was obvious that it was a snowy egret. These small relatives of great blue herons are normally found in the Deep South and are a species that rarely makes an appearance in our area. There are other egrets and herons that own a pure white feather coat and longer display plumes on their head but this bird's small size ruled out great egret, a larger white egret that has become a regular sight in eastern Ontario and now nests in the Ottawa area. Also, its bill was black (great egrets own a yellow bill). It had bright yellow lores, the area between the base of its bill and eye. This colour eliminated as a possibility the nearly identical

little egret, a grey-lored stray from the Old World; incredibly, one of that species appeared near Carp a few years ago. Another striking feature was its bright yellow feet. They are interesting for more than their vivid colour: they help their owner catch fish! The snowy egret would regularly lift its feet and place them in the water, vigorously shaking them as they entered the water. Under the water the movement of the bright yellow toes worked just like a lure, drawing fish into range of its spearlike bill. Several times the egret's bill plunged into the water, emerging each time with a small fish firmly held in it. The fish were not in view long, quickly vanishing down their catcher's throat. Snowy egrets were once at risk of becoming endangered because their long display plumes became valued commodities in the fashion trade. The demand for ornaments for women's hats became so great that

in the late 1800s the value of an egret's plumes was twice that of gold! Only after 1910 when they were granted legal protection did their recovery begin. After watching the rarity for half an hour and notifying friends about its presence, we left. The birders that showed up not only saw the egret but also spotted a second rarity. A ruff, a sandpiper from the Old World, apparently had arrived shortly after Kari and I left. On our return the next day, we were fortunate in relocating the ruff about 10 kilometres from where it had been found. I wonder if there had been a seat sale for rarities that day? The Nature email is mruntz@start.ca. – Michael Runtz is a longtime columnist who teaches natural history and ornithology at Carleton University. He has worked as a naturalist in provincial and national parks, hosted the television series Wild by Nature, and has written 11 books on natural history topics.

Pool an unnecessary expense for taxpayers T the editor: To By my estimation the pool horse is not beaten to death yet. Pat McGregor sounds like a very likable person, but hiring more bureaucrats ffor fundraising and general tomfoolery is ridiculous and senseless. The financial condition of the country, towns and cities demand a stern hand on budgets and control. Most are in deficit and well on their way to insolvency. Low interest rate policies by the central bank have enabled every one to acquire more debt at low borrowing rates. That is all changing as interest rates are rising and will continue to rise. This will squeeze the government and individuals. The rate of inflation continues to rise and wages have not kept up with the pace of that increase. Higher borrowing rates, higher inflation, low and non-competing wages will impact both tax and individual incomes. The squeeze is on. Look around the dollar carnage is all around if you care to look for it. It will be

very hard for municipalities to balance spending and income. Certainly adding a luxury item to the list will be very detrimental to the future financial outlook of many. As for people moving ffrom Ottawa to Renfrew? Not going to happen. With the cost of carrying mortgages, taxes, utilities, and operating costs moving Ottawa to Renffrew is prohibitive financially. Fuel is at or near $5 a gallon. Mathematics proves and disproves unicorn ideas every time. There will be no money saved with that move. Asking other taxpayers in other municipalities to pay ffor our extravagances is theft at best. There is only one taxpayer. We are responsible for our families and we should not ask our neighbours to provide for our family if we are able to do so ourselves. Want to swim, buy some W lakefront property. Be my guest, but as for a pool, stay out of my wallet. Marcel Oostendarp, Renfrew, ON

New candy and ice cream specialty shop opens downtown TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com Something sweet has arrived in downtown Renf frew. Sweet Tooths, an old ffashion ice cream parlour, bake shop and candy store opened its doors at 166 Raglan St. S. on Saturday, April 28 cutting the ceremonial licorice. The excitement for the new shop is building. "People can't wait, there is lots of buzz," said Blimkie. "There is lots of positive ffeedback when people look in the window," added Keller. The lights, the decor, the smells all scream fun and yummy. "It's that happiness factor when you walk in," said Keller. "Sweet Tooths is a

Keller is bringing her mouth-watering, delicious butter tarts to the heart of Renfrew and she will also be tantalizing tastebuds with her gourmet ice cream flavours (think the addition of McGregor's strawberries or Whitewater Brewery beer to ice cream). Sweet Tooths will also offer Tracey's Dairy premium ice cream and soft serve. Some of the other products offered include fresh baked goods, made-to-order specialty cakes, catering, novelty candy and many more exciting products and spaces to be launched in the near future. Business partners Tracy Keller and Mel Blimkie share a smile ahead of the opening of Renfrew's newest store Sweet Tooths, which officially opened on April 28. powder candy art station where kids can create their own pixie sticks. The dynamic duo had wanted to work together and the opportunity arose ffor them to rent the building. At first they had plans to have a lunch cart in the

alleyway across the street or some kind of ice cream trailer but plans soon evolved to Sweet Tooths. "We are so lucky to be here and we are feeding off each other's strengths," said Keller. "I enjoy walking in the door and I don't

"The downtown reconstruction will be amazing," said Blimkie. "We are both on the boards for the chamber and the BIA (Business Improvement Association) and we wanted to bring something unique to downtown Renfrew." Keller confirms they want to be a part of Renf frew. "We want to complement and not compete," said Keller. "We are building relationships with downtown businesses as it makes for a stronger downtown. That's the heartbeat of the community." The store will be open seven days a week. ENERGY TIP!

GOLDEN AGE ACTIVITY CENTRE

Change the direction of airflow on your ceiling fan. For those cold, winter months, the blades should operate in a clockwise direction, helping to push the warm air from the ceiling down into the room. In the summer, the blades should operate in a counter clockwise direction as a way of creating a nice, gentle wind.

horoscopes

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

The Raiders Blue team won the event and advanced to the provincial finals. Raiders 1 and 2 put forth a great effort during the tournament. Dawson Fraser high fives supporters after scoring a goal during the first game.

The Reunions outscored Renf frew Eye Clinic 23-9 in the first half, largely due to sharp shooting by Mae Donohue. Donohue scored 18 points in the first half and finished with 27, including six treys. Morgan Welburn and Tasha Latendresse combined for 19 points in the second half but still left Renfrew on the short end of a 41-30 decision. The Basket Brawlers relied on 10 different scorers to extend a onepoint halftime lead to a 38-31 victory over the Reunions. Mae added another 14 points. The only remaining undefeated team, Frances/Lemke Co-operators, jumped to an early 8-4 lead over the Basket Brawlers. A long dry spell saw them trailing 20-10 early in the second half. They closed the gap to three points but couldn't convert and lost 28-24, leaving no team still undefeated after three nights. Scoring for the Brawlers was spread out among 11 players.

Yes, a lot later than usual for us; both Pakenham and Calabogie courses are open this week and it's dry enough to allow power carts. The courses are in excellent spring condition. Special spring rates are in efffect. New this year to the Highlands is Frisco's Steak and Seafood, who will be serving guests in our historic clubhouse. Mary very thankful for her sister Audrey

Older and wiser sibling full of kindness, columnist Mary Cook writes Audrey seemed to know how to fix everything that went wrong in my small world. Much older and certainly much wiser, I could go to my sister with whatever care I carried on my narrow shoulders. She always had a solution. That Saturday was no exception. Bad Marguirite had almost made me cry at school the day before when she commented on my flour bag underwear and my blouse made out of a well-bleached sugar bag. Mother had put rickrack braid around the little collar, and I thought it was beautiful, trying not to

was bothering her, she would think of something that made her feel good, like picturing the money she made selling seeds along the Northcote Side Road, and what she was going to do with it. Or thinking about the new summer Eaton's catalogue that had just arrived in the mail. I tried my best to think of something, but wasn't having much luck, and then Audrey said, "You know what makes me happy? It's when Miss Crosby comes out on the step in the morning and rings the big brass bell. Now, it may sound silly to you, Mary, but let's think about all the bells we have in our lives." She asked me to picture them in my mind's eye and then tell her about them. Of course, I too could see Miss Crosby and the big brass bell at the Northcote School. And I let my mind go over all the bells in our

MARY COOK Column think where it had originally come from. Well, Marguirite had no W trouble reminding me. Her underwear came from Walker's Store in Renfrew! W And certainly her mother would never use a sugar bag for a blouse! It was all I could do to hold back the tears, and when Audrey saw that something was still bothering me when we were doing our Saturday chores, she took me by the hand and led me to the swing in the grape arbour. We rocked for a while, W and then she said she ffound that when anything

lives. I thought of the cluster of bells that hung around our horses' neck in the winter, and the sheer joy of hearing them on a frosty winter's night sitting wrapped in blankets on the flat-bottomed sleigh. Even though it was the beginning of summer, I could hear the bells in my mind. And a big brass bell hung at our back door, with a clapper tied inside with a piece of rope, and when Father and the brothers were out in the barns or the fields, and Mother had dinner, or supper ready to put on the table, she would stand at the door and clang the bell until someone appeared, waving that they had heard and would come along. Sometimes, she let me ring the dinner bell which made me feel very important. Audrey and I laughed and said she thought the

OPEN HOUSE GUIDE

bell Father hung around Bossy's neck so that he could always tell where the cows were, certainly wasn't much to look at. It was made of tin, not brass, and Bossy, slow as molasses in January, hardly ever got a ring out of it when she moved. Audrey and I laughed about that bell, and agreed it wasn't much of a bell at all. And then my sister asked me what I heard when I went into Renfrew. And of course, I heard the deep sound of a bell coming from somewhere, I knew not where, but guessed it was from one of the huge churches, probably the Catholic church, since it was the biggest church in town. How I loved it when it chimed the hour of the day. I could never figure out where the chimes came from, but I thought how lucky were the people who lived in town and who could hear

that bell every hour. Before I knew it, my mind was rid of the thoughts of Marguirite's biting words, and as Audrey pushed the swing back and forth with her feet, I ffelt I was just about the luckiest girl in all of Renffrew County. I may not have store bought underwear and clothes, but I had something far more precious than bad Marguirite, an only child, that couldn't be bought at Walker's Store. I had my sister Audrey. For the second month in a row, sculpture will feature at the Renfrew Art Guild meeting. Last month we delighted in learning about metal sculpture from Jack Stekelenburg and had the opportunity to assemble sculptures from found metal. On May 8 we will be embracing fine animal sculpture made ffrom wood as well as the personal journey of Renfrew wood carver Nish Nabie. Nish was born in Quebec and as a child spent long periods within the context of nature viewing the lives of its inhabitants, among them the eagles, hawks, bears, moose and deer. During a life which has had its dark periods, Nish was guided to sculpture as a fform of holistic therapy and something that at once has connected all the spiritual and physical aspects of his life. Nish believes deeply and humbly in the healing power of creative energy and reverence as he offers his time and wisdom at the service of Aboriginal youth.

Nish is, at any time, spending weeks of intense activity realizing the spirit forms of the animals that enter his visions, many for commissions. Recently, he has begun to handcraft smaller, very intricate pieces in antler and bone. We love that people W who do not define themselves as artists come to our presentations and meetings to sample some of the diversity of activities in our town, or to begin on a path of seeing themselves as releasing the creative spirit that we all have within. Our evening with Nish will be just that. We meet the second W Tuesday of the month at Trinity St. Andrews at 7 p.m., and we use the Quarry Avenue entrance. Don't forget that Art in The Park is one day, Saturday, July 14. With the low registration of $60 there are all sorts of opportunities for new entrants to come out and enjoy showing your work and being social at our townffriendly event. Please check out the AITP website as well as our guild site, www.renfrewartguild.com.

Bargain hunters, there's an exciting opportunity to score some sweet items while benefitting a good cause. An online auction hosted by Raglan St. Treasures will raise funds for a proposed women's addiction facility

that will serve Renfrew County and be run by Mackay Manor. The auction will run from May 5-11 and anyone interested can visit the store's Facebook page Raglan St. Treasures to sign up.

All bids will begin at $1 and 100 per cent of profits will go to the cause. Items are all on display at the business, as well. Organizers welcome any additional items. "We're still looking for do-

nations although we do have a lot of nice things," said Sandy Gombik. Items can be dropped off or donors can call and arrange pickup. Call 613-432-1793 for more information or to make a donation.
