Hospice Renfrew receives $130,000 from hike DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com It was another big year for Hospice Renfrew. The local Hike for Hospice, one
of the largest in the region, raised $130,000 again this year. Held May 6, hundreds of supporters gathered at the Ma-TeWay Activity Centre sporting team shirts with the name of a
loved one they are running for. Businesses, schools, a marching band, even members of the military participated. From the community centre they hiked along the Millennium
Trail under the sunshine, to downtown and back again. Hospice Renfrew, which is marking its 10th anniversary, offers free end-of-life care at a professionally staffed, caring facility.

Fire chief out after new policy put in place
A new Town of Renfrew policy has forced long-serving fire Chief Guy Longtin into retirement. Capt. Tim Hill has assumed the role of acting chief and council has directed the human resources committee to proceed with the recruitment of a new fire chief. On May 7, council met in closed session. When they emerged, two motions were passed. According to Reeve Peter Emon, council first passed a policy to make it mandatory, at 60 years of age for fire personnel, including the chief, to retire from their employment with the Town of Renfrew fire services. Emon explained there is also legislation in place in On-
tario for front line firefighters to retire at 60. "So, we have extended that policy to the chief's position as well," said Emon Monday night. The Ontario legislation was passed March 10, 2011, and calls on the government to allow mandatory retirement of firefighters at age 60. According to a press release issued by the government at the time, the change will "will help to standardize the retirement age across the province. This change recognizes the unique physical and hazardous work firefighters do to keep communities safe ... The changes will only apply to salaried firefighters involved in front line firefighting duties." When asked if this new policy was age discrimina-
tion, Emon said rulings of the Ontario Superior Court in 2015 and the Human Rights Tribunal equate incident command to the stresses of front line firefighters. "Many small town department chiefs often end up on the front line, which means incident command," he said. Because of this ruling Emon explained that council does not believe the policy discriminates based on age. The second motion was for the reeve and Mayor Don Eady to inform the chief of the new policy. Longtin has been the head of the Renfrew Fire Service since July 2, 1992. He turned 61 on Jan. 20. He announced the news on Facebook shortly after 6 p.m. on Monday night. "I want to go on record to

state that my employment was not terminated for cause, or for any other reason other than I am now older than the Town's newly created policy on mandatory retirement age for their fire chief," said Longtin in the post. "While I will not have any public comment regarding the Town's decision to create this policy, I will say that up until the minute that I was advised of this decision, I was fulfilling my duties in a manner that either met or exceeded the requirements expected of me." Emon says council wanted to apply the same policy across the board to keep things consistent with the provincial policy. "It's not a reflection on Chief Longtin or his service

with the Town of Renfrew. It was not a matter of council being dissatisfied with the chief or his performance," said Emon. "It's unfortunate because nobody likes to undertake this exercise with a long-
time employee who has worked very hard for the town and has put best efforts in his execution of the job. We wish him well, we hope the chief goes on to a very productive stage in his life and we support him." In his statement Longtin ex-
Election campaigns start locally Several candidates file papers TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com It's election season! May 1 was the first day of the municipal nomination period and the last day to file papers is July 27 by 2 p.m. The municipal election is set for Oct. 22. Locally there were some early and keen candidates. The Town of Renfrew website lists two candidates as unofficial nominations. Nomination papers will be certified on July 30. Kate Windle was the first candidate to file her papers at 8:56 a.m. and she is running for one of five councillor positions. Also on May 1 Callum Scott filed his necessary paper work to run for mayor. Renfrew voters will elect one mayor, one reeve and five councillors on election day. In Greater Madawaska Township, Brian Hunt filed his paperwork for mayor and Chuck Rigelhof registered to run in Ward 1 (two members to be elected). There were no nominations filed in Admaston/ Bromley Township or Horton Township. For more information on how to file nomination papers, contact your municipality.
Provincial Ontario residents will go to the polls on June 7. Locally only two candidates have been officially nominated: Jackie Agnew for the Liberals and John Yakabuski for the Progressive Conservatives. According to the head offices for both the Green party and the New Democratic party, both are still in the process of finalizing their nominee. Locally, Ontario PC Leader Doug Ford is set to speak in Renfrew on May 9 at the Renfrew Armouries. So far there is only one all-candidates event; the Upper Ottawa Valley Chamber of Commerce in Pembroke is still in the early stages of finalizing its meeting.
pressed his gratitude to the town, citizens and his staff. "I would like to thank the Town of Renfrew, and most of all the citizens of our community for the opportunity to serve you for the last 26 years as your fire chief. It truly has been my honour," said Long-
tin. "To my fellow firefighters who I have served alongside for all of these years, I want to say thank you. I have seen you place your lives on the line for the safety of all of our residents, and you have done so in a most professional manner, and with the utmost of
dedication." Emon said given the nature of human resources and employment, things happen fast. "Sometimes you have to move a little quicker than the chief and many of us on council would want," said Emon.

TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com It is sure to be an amazing performance. St. Joseph's Catholic High School presents Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat May 16 to 19 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium (835 First Ave. in Renfrew). The cast is made up of 45 students, including 14 children from local elementary schools, a pit band of eight and a large crew that has been working three days a week since November. Every other year St. Joe's puts on a musical and this year Annice O'Rourke is the director. "We have an amazing and talented cast," said O'Rourke. "This show has everything, music, dance and pizzazz." O'Rourke is very excited for opening night and encourages everyone to come on out. "The story is our story, it's fun with different genres of music from country to the 1920s to Elvis, rock and roll and disco."
The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, noted musical director Janice Beauvais. "It's an ambitious undertaking, it's really musically demanding," said Beauvais. The lead role has been cast to Arnprior resident and Grade 10 student Thomas Cherney, who is in his third production at St. Joe's. "I feel honoured to have been chosen, it's a big role and I am glad to be a part of it," said Cherney, who noted his grandmother saw the show when Donny Osmond portrayed Joseph. "I'm having a lot of fun with it and I find it easy to portray." Cherney says the cast and crew have worked very hard. "We are proud of what we have accomplished ... It's fun and there is something for everyone." The second lead of the play, the narrator, also hails from out of town, Grade 12 student Julia McCuaig is from McNab/Braeside. Keep safe against ticks and Lyme disease As daytime temperatures rise above 4°C, ticks become active. If bitten by a tick you may be at risk of getting Lyme disease. Ticks are present throughout the entire Renfrew County area and their life cycle now starts in April and can continue through to November, as long as the temperature stays at least four degrees above freezing. Taking precautions will help to reduce your risk of getting bitten by a tick. If you dress in light-coloured clothing, it makes adult ticks and nymphs (small stage of the tick), easier to see when they are on you as they are darker in colour. Do a tick check when you or your children return inside. Don't forget your pets - even if they don't go outdoors (like cats), anyone can bring them inside and they can find your indoor pet. If possible have someone check you from the back, or hop in a quick shower to help remove any unattached ticks. You can also put your clothes in a hot dryer for several minutes, which has been found to kill ticks. It is important to know that not all ticks carry the bacteria that cause Lyme disease. Lyme disease transmission depends on the length of time the infected tick is attached. Ticks that are removed quickly and have been attached for less than 24 hours are not likely to transfer the bacteria. However, if the tick has been attached for longer than a day, you may be at an increased risk and it is recommended that you consult your health care provider. If you find a fat tick, it is an indication that it has been feeding for a longer period of time and you should provide this information to your health care provider. Lyme disease symptoms can range from a bullseye rash around the bite area, to headache, fever and muscle/joint pain. Ticks often feed on deer or geese, but don't infect them very often. The tick that spreads Lyme disease has a two-year life cycle, and feeds once in each of its three life stages larvae, nymph, and adult. Symptoms can appear from three days to several weeks following a tick bite. They include: fatigue, chills, fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, or swollen lymph nodes. Consult your health care provider as soon as you experience any of these symptoms.

It’s not legal gun owners who commit crimes To the editor: I feel I must respond to Mary-Joan Hale's letter regarding gun control. It is not the legal gun owners who commit the crimes, it is the criminals. I respect the fact that you recognize that a farmer and a hunter want to have guns. What they don't want is a registration of their personal property so that at some point in time someone from the government will come to take it away. You are probably saying that is not the intent of our government.

I firmly believe that it is the agenda of a Liberal government. You mention the killings in the United States; if you looked at the statistics the highest crime rated states like Illinois have the strictest gun regulations. Look at the statistics of Chicago, a gun free city. Those states like Texas or Arizona have little restrictions on gun ownership and have some of the lowest crime rates. You spoke about the

AR15 assault rifle and the AK47. I believe that the AK47 is a military weapon not made available for the public. I may be wrong on that one. However the AR15 is no different than a sporting rifle except that it looks scary. You have the wrong impression of a hunter that blasts a deer so that there is little meat left. Wow! What a sad statement. I need not to comment any more on that. When a police is approaching a home where there is a domestic disturbance call, he should not have to rely on a gun registry.
He should anticipate that there is a gun there. If the registry does not show a gun in the residence he would be foolish in ignoring the fact that there is a possibility that there is one. Do some research on how many killings in Canada are committed by long guns. Conservatives are in favour of freedom to own guns. Bob Boyer Renfrew

Concerts in your neighbourhood Listen to the beautiful sounds of nature, urges Michael Runtz From Gregorian chant to Baroque and classic rock, our species enjoys music in many forms. That enjoyment is reflected in the success of concerts such as Woodstock, and of musicals both past and present. Nature, too, has concerts. These occur annually but are seasonal with many lasting a few weeks at best. Unlike those of our species, in nature's concerts the musicians and singers are always one and the same. Currently, frogs and toads are putting on great performances in local wetlands. The first frogs to sing are the ones that spent the winter buried in the soil in a frozen state. Due to the late arrival of spring this year, only relatively recently have the rocking-chair creaks of chorus frogs, the duck-like
MICHAEL RUNTZ Column clacks of wood frogs, and the shrill peeps of spring peepers been heard. Next to sing were the leopard frogs, whose vocal offerings sound very much like loud snores. Leopard frogs spent the winter on the bottom of ponds safely out of the reach of freezing temperatures for they, unlike the earliest singers, die when exposed to subzero conditions. Next to be heard are the shrill trills of American toads, which in early fall dig their way down below the frost line. They will have likely started singing by the time this column hits print. The final concerts of the year are those of bullfrogs, the baritones of
the amphibian world. Only male frogs and toads sing, and they amplify their sounds in a unique way. Before they sing they take air into the lungs, closing their nostrils after each inhalation. Air from the lungs is forced into throat sacs, which inflate like balloons. In many species such as spring peepers and American toads, there is one sac situated below their mouth. A few species including leopard frogs have one situated on both sides of their mouth. After the sacs are fully inflated, air is forcefully released from the lungs through the larynx, and into them sacs. The sacs serve as resonating chambers and amplify the sounds. Unlike vocal sound produced by other animals, air doesn't leave the mouth of singing amphibians; it just moves back and forth between the lungs and vocal sac(s). The amplification by the sacs is more than impressive; standing next to a group of singing spring peepers, tiny

frogs the size of your thumbnail, can be an ear piercing experience! Before they perform, male frogs stake out territories from where they sing. It is important for females to choose good singers for they usually occupy better habitats for egg laying. Studies have shown that female bullfrogs choose males with the deepest voices. Deeper voices are produced by larger males, which sing from the best territories, real estate that was acquired by brute force. Enjoy the concerts of these remarkable animals while they last. After all, great performances that are free are rare these days! The Nature email is

TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com Victoria Thomas was hired as the new business retention and expansion co-ordinator for the Town of Renfrew in November and she has been busy. On April 24, Thomas, who was hired on a 12-month contract with the town in part thanks to a grant from the province of Ontario through their Rural Economic Development program, debuted two projects to council. Thomas, who lives in Haley Station, comes to the town from the Township of Greater Madawaska, where she was a community affairs officer/deputy clerk. She is originally from Petawawa and completed her bachelor of arts degree from Carleton University in 2010. She is currently working toward her certified municipal officer designation. She believes economic development is very important for the town. "Economic development is how we are going to grow our community and really elevate our quality of life for our residents," said Thomas. "We have an excellent base right now, however my role is just to connect the dots of the resources and provide some additional resources and really make our community a place to thrive and grow and enjoy." Since arriving with the town she has been working with a sub committee on Renfrew's Business Retention and Expansion Project (BR+E), which aims to gather information directly from local businesses to develop strategies that support businesses so jobs are retained and created. She is currently conducting a survey with local businesses, anyone who is interested can see the survey online on the town website or contact her for a hard copy. "We hope to collect some very valuable Renfrew-specific data from our local business owners," said Thomas. "It will provide a baseline for us moving forward, once we get the BR+E surveys back we are going to be able to collect and analyze the data and then move forward and create some very solid and realistic action plans for Renfrew economic development."

Victoria Thomas the new business retention and expansion coordinator for the Town of Renfrew holds up the Community Profile, which she unveiled to Renfrew council on April 24. The deadline for the survey is May 11 and those who complete the survey will be entered in a draw for downtown Renfrew gift certificates. Once the surveys have been completed there will be a businesses retreat on June 19 - open to all who complete the survey. "The BR+E retreat morning will seek to gather business owners/managers who completed the survey along with other community stakeholders to discuss and identify priorities and resources that will strengthen Renfrew's economy," said Thomas. The second item she showed council was the town's new Community Profile book, which she notes is a living document that will grow and evolve as the town does. "The Community Profile is mainly intended for potential investors - the document highlights both qualitative and quantitative data that provides investors with up-to-date information, putting Renfrew in a 'Market Ready' position," said Thomas. Coun. Arlene Jamieson, who
is the chair of the economic development committee, is very pleased with the new profile. "Now we have something to actually show or leave with a potential investor or developer," said Jamieson. "It's true facts, that's updated, it's a current document, it's on paper now and it is a take-away instead of just saying, it is fact." The document has a number of useful facts and figures including: demographics, labour force, transportation and shipping, taxes/utilities and more. "The completion of the Community Profile is a significant step forward in economic development for Town of Renfrew," said Thomas. "It truly reflects that we as a municipality and community are open for business and ready to work with investors to showcase our vibrant and diverse economy and to encourage meaningful investment that will inevitably elevate our business climate and overall quality of life for business owners and residents alike." TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com Tom Sidney is an inspiration. After a debilitating injury, the Renfrew man has learned to walk and drive just eight months later. He is now ready to share his story and some pearls of wisdom he has learned along the way. The Renfrew and Area Food Bank presents Tom Sidney's Gratitude, Attitude, Altitude, Motivational Journey from Fears to Tears to Hope! on Wednesday, May 16 at 7 p.m. at Trinity St. Andrew's United Church, 291 Plaunt St. S., Renfrew. The event is free with a donation to the food bank. On Sept. 1, 2017 Sidney fell and was diagnosed with spinal stenosis - a hereditary spine deformity that was causing sudden weakness and falls. He was in the hospital from Sept. 1 to Nov. 17, at first with little to no movement in his arms and legs. With his positive attitude, determination and weeks of rehabilitation he is back and wanted to host the talk since people are still asking him questions and wondering how he is doing. Check out our range of social media channels serving up content from insideottawavalley.com through his journey of what he calls an unfortunate situation and share his message. In today's society he admits people often have a sense of entitlement when it comes to not only materialistic things but the basics such as walking, feeding themselves and more, which were all taken away from him. "I asked myself 'Why me?' I got to a point where I said 'Why not me?' I could have sat on the pity pot but I choose not to, it was a raw deal but it's what we do with it," said Sidney. After working in the mental health field with high-risk teens for 25 years he found himself using the techniques that he often shared with his clients. He said he has struggled with it. "You focus on the now and you don't look back. I see where the progress has come and I see where I can stall, like anything else you can get a stressful day and with spinal stenosis not one day is the same," said Sidney.
He wants the talk to be fun and motivating. "If you have gratitude it helps to achieve a positive attitude, which creates a higher altitude," said Sidney. "(The talk) is meant to be motivating for anyone, I hope they leave like they can handle some of life's down times." He says the message is for anyone dealing with anything. "I've pretty much defied the odds, there isn't really a good explanation for it," said Sidney. The talk is also a chance to say thank you. "The community was fantastic, it is a way to explain it," said Sidney. He admits there was a purpose behind his accident. "This didn't happen for no reason, there has to be a reason, the reason is I will help people along in life," said Sidney. "There's a message in this talk that will resonate, not matter what they are going through ... I've lived it ... but at the end of the day it could have been a lot worse."

Renfrew Hydro highlights success of new program
TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com On April 24 Renfrew council heard two success stories involving the new Affordability Fund administrated by Renfrew Hydro. The Affordability Fund is run by the Affordability Trust Fund (AFT) and funded by the Government of Ontario. "The fund is making a difference in the lives of our residents ... (We) have partnered to help people who want to reduce their hydro bill but can't afford the cost to upgrade to more energy-efficient products," said Bill Nip-
pard, president and chief administration officer for Renfrew Hydro. Hydro One was the first to be approved for the program and Renfrew Hydro was the second utility in Ontario to be approved for funding. Renfrew Hydro has received a $500,000 budget in Renfrew and they can apply for more. The first example Nippard provided was of two seniors living on a fixed income in an old apartment. The pair would only turn on the heat in extreme cold because they could not afford to pay for hydro. They used appliances
that were 35 years-old and a 25 year-old air conditioner. Under the program they will receive some help, explained Nippard. They will get weatherstripping, a water heater blanket, energy-efficient appliances, LED light bulbs, thermostats, and a new Energy Star air conditioner. As renters they need to seek the landlords approval. "Will their electric costs decline?" asked Nippard. "Possibly or at least their quality of life should improve. They can use their electricity more often for the same cost be-
cause of the energy-efficient products." He noted they are waiting to confirm their income to see if they qualify for level three and an airto-air heat pump. "Income and hydro costs are two of the factors used to determine what you can receive through the Affordability Fund," explained Nippard. "It doesn't matter if you rent or own as long as your name is on the hydro bill." He encourages everyone to apply and they can be directed to see which programs apply. Depending on a person's income and hydro
bill if they haven't already been approved they may also be eligible for free products supplied and installed by Renfrew Hydro and funded by the AFT. Some of the free products include LED light bulbs to a home energy plan to programmable thermostats, appliances, insulation and heat pumps up to a maximum of $15,000. The second case he highlighted was a senior who received the full amount; they were living on a fixed income and using electric blankets to stay warm with an older mini-split heat pump that was backed up by a base-
board heater. They received upgrades to insulate the floor, walls and the 30year-old freezer was replaced, new thermostats, LED bulbs, mini-split heat pumps and more. Nippard encourages people to contact Renfrew Hydro by calling 1-855494-3863 or for more information on the AFT visit: www.affordabilityfund.org. Staff from the AFT will call you back to ask some questions about your income and once approved contact information is then sent to Renfrew Hydro who takes care of supplying the products.
Bell announces major technology upgrade in Renfrew TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com On April 24 Bell announced it is set to invest $7 million to bring fibre technology to Renfrew between 2018-2020. The new Fibre-to-theHome (FTTH) technology will have more than 100 kilometres of fibre optic cables to 4,300 homes and businesses in Renfrew. "This is the best Bell can offer and it is not available in some major
cities yet," said Brad Docksteader, senior manager network provisioning FTTH deployment. Renfrew Mayor Don Eady was pleased with the announcement. "This is really good news for the Town of Renfrew, we need this highspeed internet," said Eady. This will mean one-Gb speed of service for internet and Fibe TV, but really what does this mean? "It means faster inter-
net," said Docksteader. "And added reliability, as well fibre optic cables are not susceptible to water and things like that. It does mean great reliability, faster internet and a new product." The changes will see the fibre cables going to every home, they will be knocking on some doors but the residents do have the option to say no thanks. "It is to let them know that we will be there to do
some construction work on the roadways placing new fibre optic cables," said Docksteader. "It is really for a big upgrade we are doing to improve their internet services and offer fibre TV products as well." He notes there will be some disruptions but they will put everything back as it looked when they started. Bell will be upgrading its equipment and placing the fibre infrastruc-
ture. "That's the biggest part of it, getting fibre to every single home. It's starting from scratch," said Docksteader. "So everything we do is brand new and we intend to bring fibre to every single home and provide everyone with an upgraded service." Docksteader says they hope to be very transparent with the municipality and they will try and capitalize on some of the on-
going construction that is already planned for this summer. When asked if there was a commitment to buy Bell services, Docksteader affirmed they are just trying to do all of the upgrades at once while they were there. After the meeting he was asked if this new technology will be more expensive? "No most people end up getting it and they are like 'Oh I saved money.'"

OVTA awards handed out
TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com Tourism is a thriving industry in Renfrew County and some of the best in the business were honoured this week. The fifth annual Ottawa Valley Tourism Awards were announced on April 30 during the Ottawa Valley Tourist Association's (OVTA) annual general meeting at Santa Fe Southwestern Grill in Renfrew. "These are awarded to the people, organizations and events that go above and beyond in offering exceptional visitor experiences," said Chris Hinsperger, president of the OVTA. "As well as recognizing the importance of working together for the growth of our local tourism industry." The Marilyn Alexander Tourism champion award recognizes a member who is an active tourism cham-
pion for the Ottawa Valley. The 2018 award went to Bob Peltzer who has been a key figure in the Ottawa Valley Tourism scene for over three decades, initially as the co-owner/operator of Opeongo Mountain Resort and Moose on the Beach restaurant. He was also one of the founding directors of the OVTA and served on the board for a number of years and is still active with the Madawaska Valley Studio Tour, Christine Peltzer's Starfield Studio and a member of the Ottawa Valley Active Transportation Alliance Board. He was not at the awards ceremony as he is currently cycling across the United States. Hinsperger accepted the award on his behalf and read a prepared statement from him. Peltzer noted it was quite an honour to be nominated and he wished he could be at the event. He
stressed the importance of working together. "The simple lesson is together we are far stronger than we were as individuals. By promoting the Ottawa Valley we promoted ourselves. It's something I have never stopped doing, even after passing my business on to others," said Peltzer. Teresa Hebb, president of the Renfrew County ATV Club, was also nominated for the tourism champion award. The Business of Distinction Award, which recognizes an OVTA member business that demonstrates leadership, innovation and dedication to the local tourism industry, went to Whitewater Brewing Company. The Special Event of the Year Award, which recognizes an event or festival that exemplifies industry best practices in all aspects of its operation, an exam-
ple of excellence for other events and festivals and to the greater tourism industry, went to the Upper Ottawa River Race and Paddle Festival. The Town of Renfrew was also nominated for the special event award for the Frewtober Craft Beer and Food Truck Festival. During the business portion of the annual general meeting tourism operators, community development leaders and stakeholders heard three presentations; the first on improving online reputations from Frederic Gonzalo of GonzoMarketing, creating buzz to drive visitation by Nicole Whiting, manager of Ontario's Highlands Tourism Organization and from OVTA staff on their membership survey and working with other businesses. Then there was Renfrew Collegiate Institute's annual Relay for Life community awareness fundraiser, held at Low Square. Along with plenty of fun things to do, the bake sale was also a hit.

There bright and early are, back row from left, Ray Beimers, Sheryl Barber, Sandra Beimers, and Liz Wright. In front are Hayley Roderick, left, Alexa Warozny, and Alexandra Wright. Right: Ryan Topham of Horton and his wife waited until the weekend their children's grandmother took them for a sleepover before they gathered up all the old toys for the Great Garage Sale. They expanded the five second rule for food and applied it to kids' belongings. None had been touched in six months.

Would you like to create a relaxing, harmonious outdoor space inspired by the famed Japanese gardens? Here are five tips that will help you turn your backyard into a pleasant Zen oasis. 1. Don't overcrowd the space. When it comes to designing a Zen garden, always think in terms of simplicity and sobriety. This means you should avoid including too many showy decor elements, which would create a cluttered effect. If you want the space to feel pure and minimal, keep accessories (lanterns, statues, fountains) to a minimum - two or three is plenty.

Beautiful zen garden by summer morning. 2. Choose organic materials. Stone tiles, sand pathways peppered with pebbles, a wooden bridge organic materials are key in a Japanese-inspired garden. Any furniture you'd like to incorporate (a
chair for meditation, for example) should be plain, simple and high quality. 3. Incorporate aquatic elements. Water, which symbolizes purity and relaxation, is a key element to showcase in your Zen
garden. To do so, you could set up a calming fountain or even a small pond. 4. Choose inspiring plants. Select trees, shrubs and flowers that inspire serenity. Japanese maple, alpine pine, boxwood and bamboo are just a few varieties that are ideal for creating a peaceful haven. 5. Say yes to asymmetry. Avoid the straight, regular lines - such as a pathway bordered by parapets - often associated with Western gardens. In a Zen space, asymmetry and irregularity should be highlighted in celebration of the unpredictable randomness of nature.
It’s a good idea to call or click before you dig With spring in the air, Ontario homeowners are eager to start seasonal landscaping and outdoor renovation projects. Ontario One Call is urging homeowners to call or click before you dig. Safe digging is serious business. In fact, it's the law. Every Ontario homeowner, or their contractor, must contact Ontario One Call, the not-for-profit organization responsible for coordinating "locates", prior to digging. Disaster restoration tips for homes, businesses Emergency Preparedness Week runs May 6-12. It's an annual event organized by Public Safety Canada in collaboration with the provinces, territories and other partners. After last year's magnitude of catastrophic events, it's the perfect time for Canadians to reflect on the past, to prepare for what lays ahead. FirstOnSite Restoration has responded to every catastrophic event across the country over recent years the 2013 Alberta and GTA floods, the Goderich Tornado, and the Fort McMurray and BC Wildfires winter ice storms, flooding in Montreal and Windsor and Atlantic hurricanes As part of your coverage
for Emergency Preparedness Week, FirstOnSite Restoration is sharing disaster preparation tips for businesses and homes. Here are a number of proactive measures that can be set in place to prepare. FirstOnSite Restoration's preparedness tips for all kinds of disaster: • Keep all important hard copy documents such as passports, birth certificates, deeds and wills in a safety deposit box. Failing that, make sure you have originals or copies somewhere off site. • Take digital photos or videos of your home or business and contents. This will help with the
claims process in the event of a disaster. Also, itemize new goods or assets located within the building each year when you renew your insurance policy. • Prepare an emergency contact list of people to call and keep it offsite. This list should include trusted friends and family, business partners, insurers and anyone else you might need to contact in an emergency. • Routinely inspect your home for areas that could cause problems in a disaster. Pay particular attention to the roof, windows and sump pump. • Have your insurer on speed dial in the event of an emergency.

Owen Brady, area co-ordinator for Heart and Stroke Foundation, said the Big Bike ride is one of the organization's core fundraisers and this year there is a focus on women's heart health. He was very impressed with the local riders. "It's a beautiful day for a bike ride and a fantastic turnout," said Brady. "There's a lot of support and enthusiastic riders." The Renfrew Legion was also on hand for the event and presented a cheque to Brady for $300.

Narrow misses for Midtown Flooring
ROB WARREN The Lumber Jills dominated Midtown Flooring 20-6 in the first half of ladies basketball action. Midtown still trailed 30-20 with under three minutes remaining, but a flurry left them with a chance to tie from the foul line with nine seconds left. A miss left them on the short end of a
31-30 decision. Judline Wren hit four treys for 12 points. Midtown Flooring led most of the first half before the Basket Brawlers pulled even at 18. Midtown had to come from behind to knot it at 29 with two minutes left. The Brawlers hit one free throw on each of two trips to the line. Midtown came up empty on two trips to

with 13 points for the Brawlers while sister Katie countered with 10 for REC. The teams hit a combined eight three-pointers. A closely fought first half with excellent shooting by both teams left the Lumber Jills with a 24-22 advantage over Frances/ Lemke Cooperators. The Jills faltered in the second half and the Cooperators
picked up the win 39-32. Kristan McMahon netted 17 points. Again, the Lumber Jills held a two-point edge at the half, this time 21-19 over the Reunions. An equally strong second half for the Jills resulted in a 42-33 victory. Cassidy Resmer had a game high 19 points. Mae Donohue hit for 16 for the Reunions.
Midtown Flooring came from behind in the second half to squeak out their first win, a down to the wire 35-33 nail-biter over the Reunions. Improved foul shooting was the key as Midtown hit seven of nine attempts. Reunions were five of eight. Jill Barr led all scorers with 13 points. Hillary McMillan potted 12.

Sean Conway comes to Neat Coffee Shop
'The Qur'an Problem and Isamism' coming up May 16
| The Renfrew Mercury | Thursday, May 10, 2018
NEWS
SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com It's a project that's gotten people listening - and talking. Former Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP Sean Conway was the latest guest at the Need to Know speaker series, which was launched two years ago. Conway packed the Neat Coffee Shop May 2 for his talk 'Aspects of a Distinct Society: The Economic and Political Culture of the Ottawa Valley in the 19th Century.' He outlined some of the distinguishing characteristics of the Ottawa Valley that in those early years made it a very different place than the rest of Ontario. Among the characters mentioned were M.J. O'Brien and Charlotte Whitton. "We had a full house on May 2 at Sean Conway's event with most people having dinner at Neat beforehand and the positive energy level in the room was palpable," said series organizer Dave Ainsworth. "This is what I would like to achieve for every event."
Sherry Haaima/Metroland
Former Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP Sean Conway chats with the audience before his talk at Neat Cafe May 2. Conway's presentation was part of the Need to Know speaker series. This is the second season for Need to Know and Ainsworth hopes to bring back the program this fall. "Running these events has been a really interesting ride. Listening to really competent speakers in a small venue is a treat. The question and answer sections can be as interesting as the presentation and hearing client feed-back and suggestions is always rewarding and useful," said Ainsworth. To help bolster attendance at the events, Ainsworth is considering running next season's events on Sunday afternoons at Neat. Continuing efforts to explore a wide array of topics, next up for the series is a look at Islamism and
western societies. Speaker Salim Mansur has addressed this topic in his new book 'The Qur'an Problem' and will be the featured speaker on May 16. He addresses conflicts within the Muslim world and will offer his views in a number of areas. "This is a great opportunity to hear from a Muslim intellectual who has strong views on the subject and has the courage to openly share them with others. As he has stated 'In the 21st century, anyone who chooses to be a dissident Muslim must deal with serious loneliness,'" says an event press release. Tickets, $15, are available at neatmusicandcoffee.ca or at the door.

November 21, 1981 to May 13, 2009 In Loving Memory of our Dear, Son, Brother and Uncle. It is nine years now Nathan, however we do not need a special day or anniversary to bring you to mind. The days we do not think of you would be impossible to find. I came across a picture of you recently which I had not seen and I was totally lost in that quality day. Oh, your beautiful smile and teeth! I still have a difficult time cherishing special memories with fondness rather than sadness! On the brighter side Nath, do I have great news to tell you! Devin and Hailey have a beautiful little girl, Macy! She was born on my birthday! The best present that I have ever received! We are all so in love with this special little doll! I just know how excited you would have been for Devin, and of course your Mother! Ryan and Devin are doing great. I am really proud of them Nath! Of course, I have to mention our other great pleasure, Charlie! Going to be ten this summer and is growing up way too fast! Oh, how you would enjoy fishing with him! I think he could probably give you some pointers on fishing! Your Dad and I are so blessed to have all these possessions! Your Dad and I are fine, still together! Lol! Never ending winter has prolonged our cottage life. Looking so forward to the summer ahead. You are in the air we breathe up there Nathan Leclaire, our beautiful Angel! You have touched our world in so many ways! We spent part of the hunt at the cottage because we knew you were there Nath! Nobody has been able to compete with your Deer Mount on the wall. Hope you and your much loved Gramps are having a blast! We know you are taking great care of him! Please know that we love you as much in death as we did in life! Wrap your arms around them Lord and let them know they are loved until we can get to that land above! Mom, Dad, Ryan, Devin, Charlie and Macy

Roberts’ (Bob) life stood still on October 19th, 2017 at 6 A.M. I held his face in my hands, looked into those marvelous blue eyes and whispered I Love You, he closed his eyes and opened them again and looked into my eyes until his Spirit left this wonderful earth that we had shared. Life without him is very difficult, we miss his loving smile, his caring hands, his love of nature, his artistic flair in his paintings, the homes that we have constructed and his love of creating a beautiful campground for all to enjoy. Thank you so much for your kind support, hearing treasured memories from so many of you gives us the pleasure of celebrating his life on Saturday May 19, 2018 at BonaVista Campground Recreation hall between the hours of 1 P.M. to 5 P.M. We will be planting a Red Oak some time in the spring in Bobs’ Memory.

Spring always brought a change in routine Father's back-breaking work kept food on the table back in the '30s, Mary Cook writes With winter long gone, and the warm weather of spring upon us, everything changed on the farm. It was time for Father to tend to the crops, and that meant nothing was the same as it had been over the winter. Now the days for Father and the brothers started earlier. Mother would have set the breakfast table before going to bed, and the sounds of morning started just as daybreak began. I would huddle down under the covers listening to Father starting the stove, and Mother hurrying to get breakfast on the table so that Father and the boys could get out to the barn to do the morning chores. It was time to work the fields. When the weather allowed it, Father would be gone before we left for school ... gone with the team and whatever farm equipment he needed to take to the back fields. Like every neighbour in Northcote, our farm was long and narrow, and on the old map my sister Audrey showed me, each farm looked like someone had laid down long pieces of ribbon from the Northcote Side Road, right across the Bonnechere River with each farm being one of the strips. Father often said if the farm was shorter and wider, he wouldn't have to do so much walking to get from one end of our property to the other. Now it was time to get onto the land and Father's day started
as the sun was coming up. He would be gone all day, with Mother packing him a lunch so that he wouldn't have to make the long trek back for his noon meal. Everything depended on the weather. If it rained, there was no going to the back fields until everything had dried up. And when that happened I would see Father pacing in the barns, checking the sky, and I could see a tenseness in his shoulders, because getting on the land was all he could think about. When we got home from school, the boys knew they would be doing the chores. Father wouldn't be coming back from the far reaches of the farm until he had put in a good day's work. Supper would be late too. I would sit on the back stoop waiting to see Father, like a dot in the sky, coming from beyond the west hill, walking behind the team. If he hadn't finished the field he was working on, the piece of machinery would be left there until the next day, when once again the long hours of daylight would find him in the farthest part of our farm. I could see a new tiredness in Father when it came time to work the land. Although he never seemed to lose his appetite, after supper his step was slower moving to the rocking chair by the Findlay Oval. If it had been a very hot day, Mother would let the fire go out after our meal, but Father still favoured sitting with his feet up on the oven door, with the Ottawa Farm Journal in his lap. After the kitchen was redded up, and we children and Mother sat around the old pine table, I couldn't take my eyes off Father. He would start reading, but that time of year, he never seemed to get
beyond the first page. I would see his head start to nod, and his pipe, which rarely left his mouth, would fall to his chest, the paper would slide to the floor, and soon, he would be sound asleep. I was always amazed that the loud talk of my three brothers around the kitchen table, couldn't keep Father awake. Even when it was time for us to climb the stairs, I could still hear the soft snores, as his body slouched lower and lower into the old rocker. Mother would go over to him, and gently take his pipe, touch him on his shoulder, and pick up the Ottawa Farm Journal. He would be in his bed off the kitchen before the last of us was ready to go upstairs. Another day would be over for Father. Another day of trying to outsmart the weather. Another day of backbreaking work in the far-off fields of that long strip of land in Northcote. I ached for him, but I knew our survival depended on those long hours spent down the hill from the barns, over the creek and past the west hill. And in my prayers I asked that he be given the strength to do what had to be done to help us survive the Depression raging all around us. The long winter months so far away, depended on it. Celebrate Community Living Renfrew County South this month May is Community Living Month JENNIFER CREEDEN
Community Living Renfrew County South is a charitable, non-profit organization that provides supports and services to people with developmental disabilities and their families. Community Living Renfrew County South has been a part of Renfrew County since 1964. In keeping with our mission statement "working with others to improve the quality of life for people with developmental disabilities" and in honour of May being Community Living Month we are celebrating by being a valuable part of our communities. The Community Living and Literacy Class Spring Ball Hockey game in front of the Renfrew Public Library (Rail Road Avenue) on May 1 was lots of fun - thank you to everyone who joined us! Community Living Renfrew County South (CLRCS) employees participated in the McDonald's McHappy Day Event on May 2 with proceeds going to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario CHEO and the Ronald McDonald House. We held a successful annual family and friends spring dinner at Renfrew Legion on
May 2 with proceeds from this event going to both Community Living and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 148 in Renfrew. Please join us for our spring fling dance on Thursday, May 17 from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion in Renfrew. Music provided by Danny Dubeau. Admission is a donation to the Renfrew Area & District Food Bank. Bingo! At the Arnprior Legion on Monday, May 21 at 7 p.m. with the special game proceeds going to Community Living. The M. Sullivan & Son Ltd. Golf Tournament in support of CLRCS's summer day program for children and teens with developmental disabilities takes place on May 25 in Arnprior at the Madawaska Golf Course. Join CLRCS as we join in the Walk For Dementia Ottawa and Renfrew County with Groves Park Lodge on May 30 at 2 p.m. CLRCS appreciates and thanks the communities of Renfrew and Arnprior for working with us to improve the lives of people with developmental disabilities and CLRCS in turn plans to continue to make contributions, wherever possible, to both wonderfully supportive communities.
