Among them is a promise that everyone on minimum wage will "pay zero tax" which he said amounts to $850 per person per year. He will also add 15,000 longterm care beds by the second mandate, and 15,000 more in 2024, he said. Some further points he raised with the crowd include: • For 15 years Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne has been "destroying this province" • Ontario has the highest subnational debt in the world • He will lower hydro rates because "people have to choose between heating and eating" • Hydro One's top executive is paid $16,000 per day, and his "crony buddies" get $14 million bonuses "of your money" • He will hire an external

auditor to find out "who's been getting rich off your money, and they will be held accountable" • Every single Grade 6 math student taking standardized tests will be in the highest percentile in the world • The sex education curriculum will be replaced because it didn't consult parents • On Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, he'll "fix his little red wagon" Ford, considered the front-runner to win the June 7 election, promised some relief for small businesses, while describing his possible government as responsible, transparent, and accountable. "A new day will dawn on Ontario, a day of prosperity, of growth. We will once again be the engine of Canada," he said. "This is a movement like I've never seen in 30 years."

He was joined on stage by area MPP John Yakabuski. The two raised hands together. While Ford has packed houses in larger communities, for a town of about 8,000 the turnout is considered very high. Area MP Cheryl Gallant was at the rally and said she wasn't surprised. She talked to many in the crowd and said they want to know Ford the man and hear about policies that will affect children. Asked why he chose Renfrew on the first day of the election, Gallant said Renfrew County is a unique area unlike cities, unlike the north and south. Nepean MPP Lisa MacLeod was also on hand. She said it is an important signal that Ford chose to visit a rural riding on his first day. She suggested the Liberal government ignored rural needs but that a PC government will give it attention.

TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com The acting fire chief for the Town of Renfrew, Tim Hill, says the department is doing well after a shocking week. On May 7, the town announced a new policy that makes it mandatory for fire chiefs to retire at the age of 60, forcing 26-year veteran Guy Longtin out of his job. Hill said he does believe in mandatory retirement at 60 for any firefighters in suppression duties as it is a safety issue and legislated by the province. Hill, who is 55 years old, was born and raised in Renfrew and has been a firefighter in the town for 34 years. He says he is still trying to figure out his duties. "Everyone is doing well. It was a shock and will defi-

nitely be a bit of an adjustment period for everyone, for sure," said Hill. "Everyone was very surprised. We are looking forward to the future. I know we have a great department and whoever is the new chief the guys will work with them 100 per cent." Mayor Don Eady and Reeve Peter Emon addressed the firefighters on Tuesday. "We had a free and open discussion," said Emon. "They were surprised but we had a good discussion and they see this as a new opportunity." Hill thinks the town will move quickly in the hiring process. "We have a great fire department and no matter who takes the role as chief, the citizens of Renfrew will have a great level of protection by their department," said Hill.

Town sticks to fire chief decision TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com The town is not backing down in its response to former fire Chief Guy Longtin's demands. On Monday, May 14 at 11:37 a.m. the Town of Renfrew issued a news release in response to Longtin's demands, which included having his job reinstated and the resignation of Mayor Don Eady. Longtin was forced into retirement on Monday, May 7, following a council decision to put a policy in place requiring mandatory retirement at the age of the 60 for the town fire chief. Longtin, who is 61, responded May 10 with a letter from his lawyer asking for his job back, for the mayor to resign and for the town to issue a written apology. If the town fails to meet the demands, said the letter, the former chief plans to seek $1.7 million to make up for damages, wages and pension losses. In

Further to that the Superior Court of Justice has recognized that mandatory retirement at age 60 is reasonably necessary to ensure the health and safety of individuals who attend working fires, manage fire crews at the scene and otherwise direct operations at a fire. "These duties are known as incident command duties. Moreover, platoon chiefs who perform incident command duties can also be subject to mandatory retirement as is the policy in other municipalities," continues the statement. "Platoon chiefs assume similar responsibilities and duties as those carried out by the fire chief of the Town of Renfrew. As a smaller fire department, incident command duties are an integral part of the

"In keeping with the Town's policy, individuals who perform incident command duties are mandatorily retired at age 60, at which time, they retire to an unreduced pension," reads the town's statement. "Given that Mr. Guy Longtin has threatened litigation, the Town is therefore not at liberty to further comment at this time." The release says the "policy was issued in good faith and reinforces the Town's commitment to put the safety of the public before an individual employee or resident." OPP preparing for growing opioid crisis DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com Southern Renfrew county OPP are preparing for an escalation in the opioid crisis with a communication strategy session. Police want to know that their messaging both in emergency circumstances and education programs - is trusted and reaches the right people. They called together area media outlets, along with health officials and first responders on May 1,

to establish partnerships. Area newspapers and radio stations attended, along with representatives from the county health unit, paramedics and officers from the Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau, among others. Opioid-related deaths are mounting in Renfrew county. A seven per cent increase in the first quarter of this year - meaning of 28 opioid-related seizures, two died. Last August, a 24-year-old male accidentally overdosed on

fentanyl in Renfrew. Five of 63 drug seizures involved opioids. The year before it was two of 47. That year, 2016, saw 2,816 opioid-related deaths in Canada. And while the stereotype is of young people, almost 30 per cent of those were people in their 30s. "This is about gaining the community's confidence and trust so that when the crisis comes, people will believe what we say," said meeting chair Bryan MacKillop. "It's all lost if we can't

communicate with the people who need it most." OPP is addressing the opioid crisis in several ways - equipping every officer with overdose-recovery Naloxone spray, among them. Community Street Crime Unit started last year. Presentations were made this year to teachers and high school students about the dangers of addiction, and drug and opioid abuse. A multi-partner community-safety well-being plan is at the fledgling stage in Renfrew county.

Two separate sexual assault complaints were received by the Renfrew OPP during the past week. On Monday, April 30 a teenage male reported being sexually assaulted by an adult male that the teen met on a social media site. As a result of the investigation Michael Daly, 56, of Hastings Highland Township was charged with sexual assault of a person under 16, sexual interference, and invitation to sexual touching of a person under 16. The accused was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on May 30. Det. Const. Barry Nisbet led the investigation. On Friday, May 4 an

adult female reported being sexually assaulted in 2002. Const. Lindsay Moore is leading the investigation.

Impaired driving A concerned citizen recently called the OPP after spotting a male driving a lawn tractor in Arnprior whom they believed was impaired, says this week's report from the Renfrew detachment. OPP officers stopped the male near the intersection of Daniel Street and Charles Street. The male had been drinking, had an open can of beer in a cup holder, and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. Following breath tests at

the detachment, a 66-yearold man from Arnprior was charged with impaired driving, driving over 80 mgs, and two counts of breach of probation. He was held in custody for a bail hearing. Const. Derek Andrechek led the investigation.

Domestic violence Arnprior and Renfrew officers investigated 12 domestic disputes during the past week. One male was charged with assault, one male was charged with two counts of domestic mischief, and one male was charged with overcoming resistance by choking, assault and three counts of domestic mischief. No oth-

Break-ins On the afternoon of Sunday, April 22, a residence on Stones Lake Road in Greater Madawaska Township was entered while the occupants were

away. Legal records and documents, along with personal banking documents were stolen. Also stolen was a Rotring 600 18k gold Bauhaus fountain pen. Const. Patrick O'Connor is continuing to investigate.

Thefts A wallet was stolen from an unlocked vehicle in the parking lot at Neat Coffee Shop in Burnstown. The vehicle was in the parking lot on Friday, May 3 from 5-11 p.m. The victim did not discover the wallet was stolen until the next morning. By the time it was reported to police, several stolen credit cards had been used at a few businesses in Ottawa. Const.

Kayla Couture is leading the investigation. Police are investigating the theft of several boat motors from The White Lake Marina in White Lake. The victim advised that three Mercury motors were stolen, 120 horsepower, and two 9.9 horsepower between May 4 at 5 p.m., and May 6 at noon. A suspect vehicle was seen at the property on Saturday May 5 at 11 p.m. The vehicle was an early 2000 dark blue four door Chevrolet pickup with a scratch down the driver's side of the truck, parked in the front entrance way. The effect of the amendment is to add a new section to the Zoning By-law, Section 3.6 Backyard Chickens, to permit the keeping of no more than 6 chickens on residential lots under 4047 square metres in area, and no more than 12 chickens on lots less than 2 hectares in area. In all cases the keeping of a rooster(s) is prohibited. All other provisions of the Zoning By-law shall apply. Where a farm is a permitted use, for example properties greater than 2 hectares in the Rural (RU) Zone, there will be no change as the keeping of chickens is a permitted use. Additional information regarding the Zoning By-law amendment is available for inspection at the Township of Greater Madawaska Municipal Office during regular office hours.

Happy Royal Wedding week

It's a fairy tale of which young girls might dream.Meeting the man of her dreams, falling in love and he not only treats her like a princess but he is a real-life prince charming! On May 19 Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be wed at St. George's Chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle. The pre-game show (or pre-wedding coverage) will start at 4 a.m. on most major North American broadcast networks and the wedding is set to start at 7 a.m. Now what does this all mean for the average Canadian? Let's not forget Canada is a constitutional monarchy and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, is Queen of Canada and Canada's Head of State. It is highly unlikely, as sixth in the line of succession, that Prince Harry will ever be crowned the King of England. Let's give the job to his father who has been waiting, patiently for the job for decades, first. Prince Harry still had to seek his Granny's permission to get married and she was kind enough to issue the Instrument of Consent with her signature that was just released on May 13. The role of the Crown in Canada matters, it is more than just ceremonial, it links us to the past and paves a way for our future. The wedding ensures that the British Monarchy will live another day. The big day and the lead up to the nuptials is also sure to be a money-maker with billions of people expected to tune-in worldwide. It is also expected the wedding will be a $500 million boost to the British economy. There will be a ripple effect felt across the pond here as well, as merchandise and souvenirs are popping up. The Royal Canadian Mint is also cashing in on the big day having recently released a $20 silver collector coin (price tag $105) to mark the occasion with the artwork created locally by well-known Westport artist Joel Kimmel. There will be numerous events throughout the area to mark the occasion, including the Royal Wedding Celebration hosted by the Hub Almonte. It starts at 6 a.m. at the Civitan Hall on the big day. In Perth the day will be marked with a high tea at 3 p.m. at Matheson Hall at the Perth Parkside Inn and Spa. And in Arnprior, the party will get started a day early at a Royal Wedding Tea Party at the library starting at 3:30 p.m. All of these local events show that for many in this country, the Royal Wedding matters in Canada. So Pip, pip cheerio, it's time to pour some tea and get a royal fascinator ready.

Making the trip from Toronto and heading toward Calabogie, our adventure began when we ended up taking a wrong turn at a fork in the road. We were moving along a gravel road, thinking we would hit another main road soon. The gravel road turned into a muddy road, the muddy road became very narrow with ice and snow. We realized we couldn't turn around even if we wanted to, so we forged ahead. And then we got stuck in a snow covered ditch. Hope-

lessly stuck. Wheels spinning. No cellphone service. Two young kids in the back asking what now? Trekking up a hill to a desolate cottage along the road provided no help, but did garner one glorious bar of cellphone reception. A tow truck would not come if we didn't know our exact location. Who to call? Mom and Dad, of course. But their modestly sized SUV would surely get stuck too. Enter the heroes of our story, Roger and Ruth. My parents, who were vacationing in the area too, flagged them down on the side of the road. Based on a rough description, they were able to deduce where we were stuck. They found us and were able to pull us out with their pickup. So it was back the way we came. After a couple failed

Decision will cost taxpayers To the editor: Re: 'Fire chief out after new policy put in place, Renfrew Mercury, May 10.' It slowly dawned on me that due to a motion passed by council on May 7, at a closed session, it is now mandatory for firefighting personnel, including the chief,

to retire at age 60. I totally agree that firefighters should be retired at 60 if they so desire, simply because their occupation is highly dangerous. That being said a yearly system of mandatory physical and mental examinations should be introduced (if not already in place). The glaring mistake here lies in how this rule is being enforced. Mr. Guy Longtin is a highly experienced, dedicated and respected employee who is being put out to grass without due consideration of his proven ability. Mr. Longtin will retire, willingly or not, and will not suffer financially. I shudder to think how much his action, if he sues and wins his case, will cost - I mean how much it will cost us - the taxpayers! Christina Edgar Renfrew

It was a special day at Renfrew's Golden Age Activity Centre (GAAC), a place that has made all the difference for local seniors looking for activity and socializing. "I am pleased to announce that the Golden Age Activity Centre is officially one of the 40 newly funded Seniors Active Living Centres in Ontario," said chair Nellie Kingsbury at a ceremony held May 11 to celebrate the announcement.The province has opted to permanently fund a selection of centres.The GAAC will get $42,700 in annual funding from the Ontario Ministry of Seniors Affairs. In order to accesss the grant, municipal funding had to be in place. "This certainly will help us continue in the operation of our centre," said Kingsbury, praising administrator Fay O'Reilly for her work on the grant application."A dream you dream alone is only a

Ontario Renovates program now open COUNTY OF RENFREW The County of Renfrew, in partnership with the Province of Ontario, is pleased to announce Ontario Renovates will be accepting new applications for funding starting May 16, to assist homeowners to access funding for upgrades to their homes to enhance their quality of life. Ontario Renovates is a program which is part of the Investment in Affordable Housing for Ontario 2014 Extension Program and the 2016 Social Infrastructure Fund. This program provides financial assistance to homeowners by way of a forgivable loan to repair their home to acceptable standards while improving the energy efficiency and/or

increasing accessibility of their unit. In order to qualify for the program, residents must meet certain criteria, including but not limited to: • The property must be located in the County of Renfrew; • Applicants must own the home that is their sole and principle residence with a market value below $227,097; • Applicants must have a total household income that does not exceed $80,300 which includes all sources of income. In order to qualify for the program, there is a formal application process that is administered through Renfrew County Housing Corporation. Funding is provided in the form of a 10-

year, interest-free, forgivable loan to homeowners based on the cost of approved work items up to $10,000. In addition, funding for accessible repairs made to a home and /or unit up to a maximum of $3,500 do not require repayment provided they are used for the intended purpose. Renfrew Timberwolves welcome back familiar face TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com Brent Sylvester is no stranger to the Renfrew hockey scene. He came to Renfrew when he was just 16 years old and played on the last Renfrew Timberwolves hockey team to win not one but two Eastern Ontario championships. He played a total of four years for the Wolves and went on to be the coach and the manager. On April 1, he served his last day as the general manager (GM) with the Arnprior Packers of the Central Canada Tier 2 Hockey League. On April 18, the Timberwolves parted ways with last season's GM Kevin Gould and on Twitter thanked him for is dedication and wished him all the best. And on April 22, Sylvester was hired as the GM for the Wolves. It is a position he is familiar with as he served just two years as the Packers GM, before that he was the Wolves GM for 13 years. Sylvester calls his return a homecoming. "I'm thrilled and very excited," said Sylvester. "I'm motivated again."

Current head coach Corey Foster is staying in his current position and Sylvester says the two go way back. Sylvester has played hockey since his was four years old and also played with the Jr. A Pembroke Lumberkings and the Cumberland Grads. He is familiar with the team and with the circumstances surrounding last season. "I know a large portion of the team, more so the older ones," said Sylvester. "I am excited for the team itself, they are coming off a tough year but we hope to build on the momentum of the playoffs." Sylvester is confident they have a strong core with a lot of local players and has no big changes planned for the team. "I hope to add more youth to sustain the team and bring long term success and hopefully develop some players so they can move on to the next level," said Sylvester. He wants the team to be family oriented. As to the style of play, the coach leads the way, he says. "It is more or less up to the coach," said Sylvester. "I thought he was fantastic. I'm

The Renfrew Pet Valu raised $2,850 for Valley Animal Rescue during Pet Appreciation month from April 1 to 30; its goal was $1,650. Michael Runtz focuses on the spring return of songbirds One of the most exciting aspects of spring is the return of songbirds. Many of our feathered neighbours fly back here from Central and South America where they spent winter. Travelling hundreds of kilometres on favourable nights, they leapfrog their way across the United States back to our region. Many visit us for only a day or two before continuing their journey north. Others stay and nest. While numerous warblers and other songbirds visit our area during spring migration, certain parts of Ontario offer even better opportunities to view even

larger numbers of these feathered jewels. Especially good are points of land jutting out into large bodies of water. After migrating songbirds cross large bodies of water such as the Great Lakes, by dawn they are ready to land to rest and refuel, and protruding points of land are the first they see. Of all the larger ones in Lake Erie, Point Pelee is the most famous for its migration of birds. Currently I am at Point Pelee National Park looking at birds. For those who've never been here, Pelee it is the southernmost part of mainland Canada. Its tip, in recent years much abbreviated because of lack of sand deposition, is situated south of the 42nd parallel, which runs through northern California and Barcelona. You cannot drive to the tip but a

During the birding season, the shuttle starts running at 6 a.m. When it leaves the visitor centre at that early time, it is filled to the brim with eager birders. Today I caught the early shuttle but when I arrived at the tip a crowd was already present. Apparently there were so many birders waiting before six the first shuttle left early. After exchanging hellos with the people I knew from my

many years visiting and working at Point Pelee, I got down to the serious business of looking for birds. It didn't take long to find them. Flocks of Baltimore orioles were flying south off the tip, as were blackbirds, kingbirds, tanagers, and many others. They flew south, not north, because these birds overshot their destination and were heading back to where they felt they should be, a phenomenon known as reverse migration. After flying out over the lake, they would swing back to the point only to fly back out. As if having flocks of colourful birds circle overhead was not enough, two American white pelicans slowly flew past the point, raising everyone's excitement to a new level. Most birds stay at Pelee,

Mary graduated from the Renfrew Victoria Hospital Nursing Program in 1945 and worked there holding several positions: Assistant Night Supervisor 1945-47, Assistant Head Nurse 1947-51, and Head Nurse 1952-65, after which she became Head Nurse at the Ottawa Civic Hospital from 1965 until her retirement. Being so very proud of her profession, it only seems fitting that Mary has passed on during National Nurses Week annually from May 6-12. Professional services have been entrusted to the care and compassion of the Zohr Family Funeral Home, Renfrew. Memorial Mass took place at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church 331 Plaunt Street South Renfrew, on Wednesday, May 16th, 2018 at 2pm followed by inurnment St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery. Son of the late Harry and Edna (nee Reid) Snider, Warren was also predeceased by siblings: Charlie, Roy, Harry, Glen, Irene Finch and Carol Snider. He is also survived by his former spouses: Lori Victor of Ottawa and Elaine Agnew of Eganville as well as many nieces, nephews and many many good friends. Marshall, Frank Albert Peacefully at Renfrew Victoria Hospital on Friday, May 11, 2018 after a life well lived, Frank passed away at the age of 96. Loving husband of Hilary Durrant for 70 years. Dear father of Keith (Anne) of Lombardy, ON, Ray (Mandy) of Pakenham, Ian (Mary Anne) of Cotieville and Kevin (Kathy) of Renfrew. Proud and loving grandfather of seven and greatgrandfather of five. Frank emigrated from a Britain devastated by wars, economic depression and class divisions in 1951 with the love of his life, Hilary, and their young son. His dream was to own a farm in Canada, the land of opportunity, freedom and fresh air. Frank worked in the fledgling aircraft industry in Canada contributing to the Avro Arrow project. But within a dozen years he had realized the dream and moved with a family that had grown to 3 sons onto the farm on Mount St. Patrick Road. A fourth son was born while there. Through many years Hilary and Frank and the boys raised beef cows and chickens and also managed extensive gardens of fruit and vegetables as they lived a pastoral life. Firewood and snow removal were hard work but the activities were also cherished as part of everyday life. Throughout it all Frank and the whole family used large doses of humour. Eventually the country life became too difficult and Frank and Hilary moved into a small house in Renfrew that overlooked a park used by laughing children and neighbours walking dogs. I held his face in my hands, looked into those marvelous blue eyes and whispered I Love You, he closed his eyes and opened them again and looked into my eyes until his Spirit left this wonderful earth that we had shared. Life without him is very difficult, we miss his loving smile, his caring hands, his love of nature, his artistic flair in his paintings, the homes that we have constructed and his love of creating a beautiful campground for all to enjoy. Thank you so much for your kind support, hearing treasured memories from so many of you gives us the pleasure of celebrating his life on Saturday May 19, 2018 at BonaVista Campground Recreation hall between the hours of 1 P.M. to 5 P.M. Office Assistant/Recreation Assistant Reporting to the CAO/Clerk and designated staff, the student will provide assistance for office administration and/or recreation functions. This position will commence on June 11, 2018 and will last for 10 weeks at a rate of $14.00 per hour, 30 hours a week.

This position will be reporting to the CAO/Clerk, and will provide administrative and back-up support to Council, the CAO/Clerk and the Treasurer. • The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and skills: Minimum of three (3) years related work experience in a senior management position, with a minimum of one (1) year in municipal government; • College or university degree in an accounting related discipline and/or public administration with municipal accounting and finance program and municipal tax administration program an asset. • Completion of AMCTO’s Municipal Administration Program (MAP) and Municipal Accounting and Finance Program (MAFP) an asset. CMO accreditation and/or willingness to attain; • Knowledge of applicable legislation related to municipal finance, taxation, payroll and reporting requirements. • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills to interact with government departments and agencies, special interest groups, the media, and the public.

Mother would use every last drop of paint around the house, Mary Cook writes

MARY COOK Column ered. Audrey said it had enough paint on it to stand up on its own! Mother thought the old swing in the grape arbour could stand a touching up. It was made of wood, and mother tackled it like someone possessed, leaving the seats to the last. It took her the better part of a day to turn the faded wood to green. Of course, none of us were too happy about the swing getting a coat of paint. It took ages to dry, and that meant none of us could use it, which didn't please my brothers one bit. But mother managed to use up most of the paint, and all that was left was a little dribble in the bottom of the can. She stood in the middle of the yard, looking around her to see what she could dab up. Father had backed the old Model T out of the garage ... only three of the fenders matched, and he could see mother looking

at the odd one father had picked up at Thacker's Garage in Renfrew when we lost one in a ditch on the way in to town one day. Father could read mother like a book. He knew what she was thinking. Well, before you could say "Jack Robinson" he was behind the wheel and out the gate and onto the lane and yelled, "have to get some nails at Briscoe's General Store." We never knew if mother thought she could use up the last of the paint on the fender. But she settled for painting the two poles that held up the clothesline. Audrey said she would bet her last dollar we were the only ones in the entire County of Renfrew with bright green clothesline poles. Emerson said he was mighty glad the privy was hidden behind a cluster of cedar trees. The swing never did look like the rest of the targets mother attacked with the paint brush ... the old boards soaked up the paint like a sponge, but at least it took the last bit out of the can. Mother hadn't wasted a drop. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Mary Cook is a longtime writer with several books in print and in electronic copies. 'Mary Cook's Memories' appears as a regular column.

Waste, according to my sister Audrey was a word mother thought was right up there with swearing. Nothing was wasted in our house! Audrey said that is why the gallon of bright green paint mother bought at Scott's Hardware in Renfrew to give the pump its usual spring cleanup, would be used until there wasn't a drop left in the can it came in. First of course, was the pump. Then with a lot of paint left over, the privy door was next. Father said he never heard of anything as crazy as painting a privy door with the whole thing hidden in a cluster of cedar trees behind the summer kitchen. Mother paid him no heed, so there was the privy door, a bright green, with the rest of the little building faded and as drab as a cow plop! Two old kitchen chairs on the back stoop, which were solid pine, were now bright green. Mother never was very fond of pine ... always said she thought it rhymed with poverty ... just about everything in our old log house was pine. Father wasn't too happy about the chairs being painted green, and lamented that they had been pine for three generations, but Mother had paint to use up, and as Audrey said, they were right in the line of fire. There was still lots of paint left, so the summer kitchen window sills were the next to get a coat. Mother was going to paint the frames too, but father told her that would seal the windows until doomsday, so she settled for the sills. You could smell paint clear out to the drive shed, and mother was splattered too ... dabs on her nose and the old white pinny she used to clean out the hen house was just about cov-
