Two Renfrew moms are passionately fighting for their adult children's right to work and gain self worth. At Renfrew council on May 22, Lisa Duggan and Charlene Riopelle said they have children with developmental disabilities who are unable to work full time. Riopelle's son Travis, 29, has the function of someone in Grade 1 or 2 but is able to sort the recycling at Community Living in Renfrew. Duggan's son Alex, 37, is autistic and helps with the dishes there as well. According to the moms, both jobs give the young men self worth and a sense of accomplishment. They both earn only a couple l See RALLY, page 3

of dollars an hour. But under Bill 148, Community Living must pay them the $14 minimum wage. According to the moms, the organization can't afford that and their sons will lose their jobs as of May 31. But the parents aren't interested in the money. "They have very small jobs and are part of the community," said Duggan to Refrew council, about her son who doesn't read or write. She said she loves her son but feels that they can't put a dollar figure on his self worth. She added that minimum wage may be a bit high in this case; a lower amount would be more acceptable. The pair is hosting a rally on June 2 at Low Square in Renfrew at 11 a.m. to request changes to Bill 148 and are encouraging everyone to come out and support those who are affected by this change. Riopelle says they want to have the rally to show what is going on in Renfrew. "Renfrew is the best com-

munity for our kids with disabilities; they can go anywhere and are shown respect," said Riopelle. "We believe this is the best community, but who gives anyone the right to tell us what our kids can do?" Travis is unable to read or write and he sometimes "has accidents," she explained to council. "If they can't do the job for $14 an hour, they don't know if it's $2 or $20," said Riopelle. Riopelle told council that Community Living Ontario supports the legislation, but she did not understand why. Reeve Peter Emon offered to write letters of support to a number of organizations that he is involved in to try and help them. Mayor Don Eady was 100 per cent in support of the amendment that the two moms are proposing, which is to exempt individuals with developmental disabilities in Ontario who want to work but cannot meet the requirements for Bill 148 (mandatory training in CPR, WHMIS,

Community Living responds to work placement changes TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com The executive director for Community Living Renfrew County South empathizes with the parents who are hosting a rally in Low Square in Renfrew on June 2 at 11 a.m. asking for changes to Bill 148. Jennifer Creeden explains her organization runs a combination of recreation, leisure, social, educational and volunteer activities for the day programs in Renfrew and Arnprior. Community Living has also been running a supportive employment program, which includes work experience/job training. However, the Ministry of Community and Social Services, from which they receive funding, has a new initiative called a Shift To Greater Inclusion to move away from sheltered workshops and work experience. This also means that under Bill 148, Community Living is unable to afford to pay the new minimum wage of $14/hour. "There should be no discrimination based on disability. If they are able to complete that work in a competitive work site they need to be paid for that," said Creeden. "With the Shift To Greater Inclusion, the goal is to move away from the sheltered workshops/job training. That will work for some but not for all. And this is where some of the families are address-

Tiffany Lepack/Metroland

Jennifer Creeden, executive director of Community Living Renfrew County South ing their concerns." Creeden notes the time spent at Community Living includes a number of different aspects. "The work experience was only a small part of their time with us," said Creeden. "The majority of time with us are other activities. That doesn't take away from the fact that they believe their job is very important. They take pride in it and valued it." The families were notified of the change in April and Creeden said it is a hard transition for some of the families. "The individuals have had (their job) taken away from them," said Creeden. "We at Community Living can do a really good job to transition them to other activities but that is still a loss for them and another activity doesn't fill that void." It boils down to a choice. "If they wanted that job, they feel their choice has been taken

away," said Creeden. "They valued the relationships they made and they were proud of what they were doing." Community Living will now help them find something else and are trying to help everyone who is making the transition. "It is our job to find other experiences for them to do in the community, playing golf or volunteering at the food bank. It's for us and that individual to do and it's another shift." Creeden was unsure how many people in Renfrew and Arnprior were affected by the elimination of the work experience program but notes some were able to retire from their jobs and some now have new experiences. She stresses that no one is losing any time with Community Living. "The day program is not closing, it is shifting to include other activities," said Creeden. "The idea is to work with individuals as we are always exploring new activities." She points out Community Living is also very involved in the community with fundraisers, its annual community dinner and more making for a very busy schedule. As to the rally itself, she said: "I support the individuals and the families to speak up about their concerns. I do believe they want to be heard."

The three main candidates vying for the MPP position in Renfrew-NipissingPembroke were asked to provide personal opinions on three topics of interest during Ontario Election 2018. They mostly stuck to party messaging that reinforces speaking points echoed by candidates across the province. However, when asked to name one area where they differ from their party PC candidate John Yakabuski, NDP Ethel LaValley, and Liberal Jackie Agnew seemed a bit caught off guard. "That's a tough one," Agnew said. "Here's what I'll say. There's a lot of talk about deficits, and it bothers me too, but when I got to thinking about it - we need to invest in health care, in infrastructure. The more I looked into it, the more I saw we needed to make choices. We can't just cut, cut, cut." LaValley genuinely struggled; she said she is running because the party platform is so attractive to her. "I'm really stumped," she said. "I believe that Andrea Horwath and the NDP have put together a strategy and plan to put this province on the right track; 99 per cent of the answers are right there." The incumbent Yakabuski said he wouldn't be providing "personal opinions" because that's not how elections work. Yet when it came to the question of a difference from his party, pointed to a track record of free votes in the legislature, some of which have converted colleagues. "I can't say that I counter the party, but people know me," he said. "And they know I stand up for the people in my community." On energy costs, one of the more explosive topics of the campaign, LaValley said her party is the only one with a plan to get Ontario out of "the fiasco." Hydro One must return to public hands. She opposes recent executive-compensation boosts, and wants to end costly peak use times. LaValley inserted her leader's name far more frequently than other candidates did. Yakabuski, the former energy critic, spent much of his time decrying the Liberal track record. Premier Kathleen Wynne's government drove up costs 300 per cent through lucrative contracts in the Green Energy Act. He wants an investigation to see if terms can be reduced. "During my time as energy critic I saw the Liberals destroy the energy system," he said. Agnew said her party "inherited" problems with the energy file, but that now the Fair Hydro Plan has reduced costs by 25 per cent. Home energy audits and other programs have helped defray costs further. On the environment, Yakabuski takes issue with the perception that PCs are lagging behind. His party introduced

Lands For Life, now called the Living Legacy Land Use Strategy. Provincial parks and the blue box system are also part of the PC legacy. But there will not be a "carbon tax tax-grab" on his leader Doug Ford's watch. "We're not going to shift rice on a plate or give $400 million to California to offset carbon," he said. LaValley, who worked in the ministry of natural resources, said the environment ministry is "virtually non-existent" because of cuts. She wants to see big business forced to recycle because "our world is in trouble. "Each and everyone of us have to play a part." Agnew declared that climate change is occurring. And that the answer is not to

TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com There's been a stalemate in the ongoing issues regarding the former Renfrew fire chief. No official update has been made since the Town of Renfrew released a statement that it was sticking to its new policy making it mandatory for fire chiefs to retire at age 60. Former chief Guy Longtin was relieved from his position on May 7 and had issued a lawyer letter stating his intention to file a claim. On May 22 Renfrew council went in camera at the end of its regular council meeting for an hour to discuss potential litigation involving the former fire chief. When council came back into the public portion of the meeting Reeve Peter Emon noted "it was a session meant to bring council up-to-date on potential litigation and they will update council as necessary if there are any changes." However, reaction continues to pour in. The Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs (OAFC) recently released a statement on the issue: "Upon receipt of legal counsel, OAFC is of the opinion that actions to mandate a retirement age for chief fire officers contravenes section 41(2) of the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, 1997 (FPPA) which states, '(a) a person shall be deemed not to be a firefighter if, (a) in the opinion of the board, he or she exercises

managerial functions or is employed in a confidential capacity in matters relating to labour relations, (b) he or she is a person designated under subsection 54(4).'" It is clear that a chief fire officer, executing managerial functions, is excluded from the definition of a "firefighter" in Part IX of the FPPA. The OAFC supports the position that a chief fire officer is not subject to mandatory retirement. The OAFC does not support the dismissal of a chief fire officer, who regularly exercises managerial functions, based on the grounds of his or her age." Stephen Hernen is the president of the association and would not speak directly to the situation in Renfrew but acknowledged being a firefighter is a hard physical job and supported retirement for career front firefighters at the age of 60. However, he compared the chief's role differently. "The fire chief is like a hockey coach," said Hernen. "The coach does not go out on the ice for the penalty shot, he assigns the best member of the team to complete the task. He is not physically doing the task. The coach is just standing there watching." As far as Hernen knows this is the first time a municipality has forced a fire chief into retirement due to their age and this would be a major change if it were ever applied to all chiefs. "It would have a huge impact as quite a few chiefs are

over 60," said Hernen. "It would be far reaching and unnecessary. Running a command carries stress but not the same stress as carrying a hose in." In 2017 the Town of Arnprior hired fire Chief Jeff Crawford who is over 60. Michael Wildman, chief administrative officer for Arnprior agrees with the OAFC. "It does not apply to chiefs because fire chiefs are exempt from the mandatory retirement because they are considered to be executing management functions," said Wildman in an email. "And further, chiefs are not regularly involved in front line suppression." Wildman says the town has reaped the benefits of having a chief over 60 with his extensive experiences as a firefighter. "Chief Crawford brings with him a combination of professional fire fighting experience and volunteer fire fighting experience totalling about 50 years. For a position as important as the fire chief, extensive experience and training is not only needed, it is critical," said Wildman. "The fire chief must be a seasoned and experienced leader and professional that can only achieve this level of competency with many years of experience. This tends to mean fire professionals who are in the latter part of their career. Chief Crawford has demonstrated that his extensive experience is a tremendous asset to the Town of Arnprior."

Anna Dolan has spent much of her childhood on the shores of Kamaniskeg Lake along with family and friends and is now proud to call Barry's Bay her home. The times spent swimming, canoeing and cottaging in the natural beauty of the lake has shaped in her a deep appreciation for the environment and an even deeper appreciation of the precious need to protect it. A graduate of architecture from Carleton University and a seasoned project manager, Anna believes the Green party's values of being fiscally responsible, socially progressive, and environmentally focused will contribute enormously to sustaining that natural beauty as well as the livelihoods and quality of life of all in this community. After all, we have only one planet; there are no viable options. We need to keep this planet clean, safe and sustainable. Anna has volunteered in the community to assist professional newcomers (architects and engineers) fleeing countries so unlike ours that we cannot imagine, in integrating and finding work in their new home. This has given Anna an appreciation of the opportunities that make us such a rich country not only economically but in democratic rights. Anna believes that we have "won the lottery of life" being in Ontario and Canada, but that does not last without an awareness that it cannot be taken for granted. Our democracy dies a little bit every time we allow silence to replace reasoned thought. The Green party position of no whipped votes is one side of securing that democracy. Anna is married and has two adult daughters, both living and working in Ottawa. Her husband Peter is also a retired architect and wholeheartedly supports

Just vote Anyone who watched just five minutes of the last leaders debate of the Ontario provincial election on Sunday night may be fighting with the question: Why vote? These so-called leaders kept interrupting each other, throwing digs, ignoring the moderators; it gives little hope any of them can lead the province after the June 7 election, if this is how they choose to treat each other on national television. But that is what any eligible voter is asked to do: just vote. Voter apathy is not easy to understand for those who have always seen it as their civic duty. Yet those who refuse to vote have a few reasons that deserve to be addressed directly. Because it is clear that everyone benefits when all voters in a democracy cast a ballot. 'I never vote,' is a line often heard at times such as this, during a provincial election campaign. 'I'm not political and don't know how it works or where to go; so I just don't bother.' A more difficult one goes like this: 'I don't think the party I like can win in this riding so what's the point?' And the toughest one to get around is: 'I don't like any of the candidates. I prefer to protest by spoiling my ballot.' But vote you must. In the 2014 election just over 50 per cent of Ontario's 9.2 million eligible voters cast a ballot and in 2011 48.2 per cent voted. That slight increase still means only half the province voted. You may think you are not political but every action you take or don't take affects politics. The new developments in hospitals and highways were funded by the provincial government, every time you walk into the hospital you are reaping the benefits of provincial funding. The expansion, if and when it happens, of Hwy. 17, which is always a hot-button issue, will be decided by the party of power in Toronto. Think about that the next time you go for a drive. If you don't think your favourite party is going to win, still vote for them as the party receives a quarterly rate by the number of valid votes a party's candidates receives in the general election: your vote matters. Last week, the prime minister recognized the 100th anniversary of women's rights to vote federally, in Ontario women were granted the vote in 1917. Men and women died in war for our right to vote. After all of these sacrifices and battles it proves you must vote. And as we all know no candidate in the history of democracy has been perfect. Be educated, it is easy to look up how and where to vote; www.elections.on.ca or call 1-888-668-8683. Election day is June 7, vote, it matters.

Bill 148 rally goes June 2 in Renfrew Amend Bill 148, this is all we have ever asked for. We have really created a stir with a few people and we are really wondering why. We are fighting for the rights of our developmentally disabled individuals who don't fit in the box. My son has been at Community Living for 17 years, he is 37. He can't read or write, he takes seizures, he has shortterm memory, he loves his time there, his job there. I have been critiqued for saying he is not worth $14 an hour, and due to his disability he is not. I understand that in today's society money is a big factor. Businesses

The bird with an unusual diet Unlike many others, these birds view tent caterpillars as tasty treats, columnist writes Even though our species evolved from early hominoids that devoured hair-covered animals, we abhor the feeling of hair in the mouth. Many wild creatures seem to share that repulsion, and in nature there is a cornucopia of hairy caterpillars that generally go uneaten. Although a few caterpillars, including those of the Io moth, bear poison spines that burn on contact, most, such as those of gypsy, dagger and tussock moths, gain protection simply from being covered in an abundance of hairs. Eastern tent caterpillars are an excellent example. These hairy caterpillars build highly visible silk tents in the forks of branches of cherry trees. The tents are their refuge when they are not out dining on leaves. As time passes, the caterpillars strip the trees of their leaves and enlarge their tents to accommodate their increase in size. Most birds avoid eating

MICHAEL RUNTZ Column eastern tent caterpillars because of their hairs. But nature seems to abhor generalizations, and there are exceptions to almost every rule. In fact, there are a few birds that not only eat haircovered caterpillars but also thrive on them. Those birds are the cuckoos, and two species - the blackbilled and the yellow-billed - live in Ontario. Although yellow-billed cuckoos occasionally make it as far north as the Ottawa Valley, the black-billed cuckoo regularly nests here. Even though they are relatively common, blackbilled cuckoos are shy, secretive birds, and their soft, rapidly repeated "cu-cu-cucu" calls are more com-

monly heard than the birds are seen. Both cuckoo species are elongated birds with grey-brown backs and white bellies, and sport long tails and a strong, down-curved bill. Yellow-billed cuckoos differ from black-billeds, in having large white spots on their tail feathers and rufous patches on their wings. And as their names suggest, the bill colour is quite different between the two species. This appears to be a good year for eastern tent caterpillars; their highly visible tents are popping up everywhere. This means it should be a good year for the cuckoos. As if a large crop of caterpillars had been anticipated this year, both cuckoo species appeared in Point Pelee relatively early in the migration period this May. Recently I was on a morning property walk when I noticed movement in a small choke cherry. I raised my binoculars and was delighted to see a yellow-billed cuckoo sitting

It leaned to one side and slowly and deliberately picked a caterpillar from the outside of its tent. It appeared to be in no hurry, and after eventually swallowing the caterpillar, it casually repeated the process several more times. So why do cuckoos dine on hairy caterpillars when most birds don't? The rea-

son is cuckoos have a most unusual way of dealing with hairs and spines. These defensive structures end up stuck in the lining of a cuckoo's stomach, eventually coating it with "fur." When the hair coat starts interfering with digestion, the entire stomach lining is sloughed off and gets regurgitated as a pellet. It obviously takes a lot of guts to eat meals covered in

Historic booth torn down

TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com The booth is gone! If you are still relatively new to Renfrew this phone call might cause some confusion. The reaction in the office quickly affirmed the importance of this change to the town core. On May 16, Margaret 'Peg' Clemow, 91 years-old, watched the small structure her family has owned for 80 years, at 11 Lochiel St. N., come down. The booth as it was affectionally known was built some time during the Second World War as a Tea Room, soon after that it became Freamo's Booth, selling hotdogs/hamburgers and cigarettes. Clemow ran the booth for five years in the 1960s and then she and husband Ray rented it to Arlene McCallum. Pepsi Wallace and Esther Narlock were the last to run the booth

when it closed in 2007. Everyone has a connection to the booth. The construction worker helping to take down the booth recalled when he was a kid he would buy penny candy there. The older generation remembers buying a coffee there with some toast on the walk to work and everyone remembers buying chips there on the way to school, so I have learned in the few days since the booth came down. As to why it came down, it was time, people were crossing between the booth and Clemow's yard and it had been closed since 2007. As Clemow watches the booth come down she calls it historic and a landmark. "Everybody knows it as the booth," said Clemow. "It's kinda scary when you see your life torn down. We had many good memories, the people were wonderful, we had a great time and enjoyed it."

"Renfrew Victoria Hospital, as a BPSO, belongs to an elite group of health and academic organizations across the province, nationally and internationally. The common thread you share is the desire to prepare nurses and others with best practices, to integrate them in your everyday work, and have a positive impact on outcomes for clients, providers, the organization and the system. By applying the best knowledge and evidence, registered nurses and other health care professionals are ensuring the care they provide for patients at RVH is the very best. Together, we are transforming nursing, health and health care through knowledge, added McConnell. "We're excited to continue our BPSO journey by spreading our success to other health care partners in Renfrew County and by providing peer mentoring to other hospitals in the province trying to achieve this important milestone," stated Ferguson.

Nursing Week, May 7 to 13, culminated with staff gathering to celebrate the achievement of a major milestone at Renfrew Victoria Hospital. In 2015, RVH began a journey to implement best practices through the Registered Nurses of Ontario's (RNAO's) Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) program. BPSOs are health care organizations selected by RNAO to implement and evaluate its internationally acclaimed best practice guidelines (BPGs). These guidelines incorporate evidencebased practice to enhance patient outcomes. All of the required deliverables of the program were met by RVH and on April 19 a small group of representatives travelled to Toronto to attend a special ceremony. "Congratulations on a very successful BPSO journey!" said the RNAO progress report, citing "impactful, positive outcomes for all best practice guidelines implemented." ? More than 50 front-line nurses and allied health care staff were instrumental in supporting the uptake of the BPGs and evidence-based practice across the organization. "Our BPSO designation is a testament to the leadership and hard work of our team, as well as our commitment to the highest standards of excellence in care to all of our patients, from the elderly, to people living with chronic disease, to vulnerable women in our community," said Chris Ferguson, RVH vice president of patient care services. Throughout its three-year candidacy, RVH implemented eight RNAO BPGs that will positively impact the health and well-being of its patients, including: • screening for delirium, dementia and depression in

ROTARY MUSIC FESTIVAL WINNERS Tiffany Lepack/Metroland

The 2018 edition of the Renfrew Rotary Music Festival recently wrapped up and the festival awards were handed out on May 2 at Trinity St. Andrews Church in Renfrew. Award winners are: Front row: Lauren Rado, Mischa Huyer, Honour Yuck, Hazel Horvath, Eady Horvath, Lainey McDonald, Amyas Thaci and Rocky Dougherty. In the second row are: Liberty Yuck, Cherish Yuck, Catharina Lamb, Thomas Cherney, Emily Cherney, Adelynn Neil, Lori Ann Cherney and Chloe Charette. And in the back row are: Xianghui Cathcart, Blessing Yuck, Clark Burger, Jamie Asselin, Cameron Hunter, Olivia Smart and Alexia Bulger.

Manor Rotary room used every day It's proof-positive of the difference the Rotary Club makes in Renfrew. Shelley Sheedy, director of long-term care at the Renfrew Bonnechere Manor, expressed her gratitude and that of her staff and residents to the Rotary Club of Renfrew for their donation of $100,000, which made possible the all-purpose facility. The club pledged to raise this sum seven years ago to make this much-needed space possible. It allows for a large variety of activities to take place, many of which

would not happen without this versatile location. "Two hundred and fifty staff members use it for everything," says Sheedy. "We also have about 150 volunteers who schedule residents' activities there. These include exercise classes, bingos, art classes with Diana Wakely and friends, indoor bowling, horse racing and other fun to do things such pizza parties, musical entertainment and movies." When the manor was built, there wasn't the money to build a recreational

and meeting space. The Rotary Club was aware of this and as far back as the early 1980s there were discussions among the membership but there still wasn't a viable way to raise the amount of money necessary and there were other community needs deemed more urgent such as funding improvements for the Renfrew Victoria Hospital to which the Rotary Club has donated several hundred thousand dollars over the years. The room is also used for staff educational purposes,

meetings and staff appreciation days and also community activities and fundraising. It can also be rented at a very reasonable cost. Rotary Club president Kent Tubman noted that the club is well ahead of its pledge target of $100,000 over a 10-year period. "It has only been seven years since we made this pledge and we should finish it in the next year." This is an important anniversary year with the manor celebrating its 60th. horoscopes ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, allow time for others to process a big announcement you recently made. Patience is something you will need this week. Viewing things from others’ points of view will help. TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Very little that is holding you back this week, Taurus. You realize you can do anything that you set your mind to. Use this power wisely in the next few days.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Ladies basketball sees quarter-final upsets ROB WARREN Because all six teams in the Renfrew Ladies Basketball League are so equal, to say any game was an upset would be a stretch. However, both the sixth and fifth place teams are now advancing to the semis and the third and fourth place teams are finished.

The sixth place Reunions were cruising along fine, up by nine points with eight minutes left, but couldn't hold on. The third place, Frances/Lemke Co-operators, tied it at 32, largely due to the sharp shooting Janet Goulard with 17 points. In overtime the Reunions struck first and often, advancing with a score of 41-34. Mae Donohue scored 19 points.

Fifth place Midtown Flooring trailed fourth place Lumber Jills but used a 15-0 run to close out the first half up 22-16. They extended the lead to 10 points before the Jills twice closed to within four. Midtown pulled ahead down the stretch and closed out 42-34. Jill Barr hit for 19 points. Judeline Wren hit four from downtown for 12 points.

Trevor Matthews celebrates the first hole in one of the season at Dragonfly Golf Course.

Renfrew Food Bank Nine and Dine set for June 22 at Dragonfly BILL RAINBOTH Dragonfly General Manager The weather at Dragonfly could not have been better this past week. The course set a record for rounds played, and we have more than made up for our slow start. Playing conditions are fantastic and the greens are running faster and smoother on a daily basis. Taking top spot in our new and growing Friday Ladies Stroke Play League on Friday May 18 was Gail Boucher in first Place, Pat Lee in second Place, and Therese Williams and Bernie Culhane tied for third. The "hidden hole" winner was Kathy Hamilton. Monday results from men's' league on May 21 were as follows: Enright Tree Services chopped down the competition taking first place, and Renfew Pizzaria were two strokes back finishing in the runner up position. Closest to the pin winners were Mike Lefebvre on #13, and Greg Gavin on #18. It was déjà vu all over again on Tuesday with the Tragically Chipped winning A flight, and the Dragonslayers winning B flight - each for the second week in a row. Closest to the pin winners were Corey Cameron on #13, and Jamie Mayotte on #18 The Abandoned Cubs clawed their way to victory on Wednes-

day night to win A flight, and the team from Opeongo Bowldrome spared no other team from their skills to win B Flight. Barry Pilgrim was closest to the pin on #13, and Scott Campbell was closest on #18 Now that our Thursday Ladies League has established handicaps, we are going to implement our new 18 hole scoring format (as they play nine holes weekly). Last week was the first nine holes, and prizes will be awarded to teams based on their 18 hole scores from this week. Closest to the pin winners were Mary Lyn Madigan on #5, Gail Keyes on #7, Tracey Mackenzie on #13, and Julie Mahusky on #18. Dragonfly is hosting Demo Day on Sunday June 3 with great new equipment from Cobra Golf. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and everyone is welcome. We are also excited to host a new event for Dragonfly on Friday June 22, in support of the Renfrew and District Food Bank. This is a Nine and Dine, best ball tournament. Tee times begin at 5 p.m. (shotgun start). The focus is on fun, and community. If you can get a foursome together and would like to participate in this great initiative please call the Renfrew food bank at 613-4332196, or the Dragonfly Pro Shop at 613-432-3838. Happy golfing!

On Thursday, May 10, the Renfrew Vipers youth wrestling team began their journey to Prince Edward Island to participate in the Canada East Wrestling Championships. The Canada East Wrestling Championships bring youth from all over the eastern Canadian provinces. The Youth Vipers stopped in Quebec City at the Citadel for a little piece of Canadian history. On Friday morning the team headed to Prince Edward Island to weigh in for their competition the next day. On Saturday the wrestlers headed to the Eastlink Centre to begin the competition. It isn’t what we write, it isn’t what we say, Its how we feel deep inside, As we think of you today. Although we smile and make no fuss, No one misses him more than us. Any when old times we often recall, It’s when we miss him most of all. May think winds of love blow softly And whisper so you’ll hear, We love you, miss you And wish you were here. Gone but not forgotten,

In Memory of Poppa Don who passed away May 29th, 2007 Although we smile and make no fuss... No one missed him more than us. And when old times we oft recall... That’s when we miss him most of all. Sadly missed by... Jamie, Shawnalee, Paddy, Cordell

The Bonnechere River Watershed Project, a local not-for-profit organization, celebrated its 20th anniversary of "Helping Ourselves to a Healthy Environment" at the Renfrew Royal Canadian Legion on April 18. The celebration was opened by Renfrew reeve Peter Emon, who welcomed everyone and congratulated the organization on the successes of its many projects over the past 20 years. The afternoon provided an opportunity for attendees to view memorabilia including newspaper clippings, brochures and membership cards from the BRWP early days, as well as more recent items such as BRWP water quality reports, video clips,

and commissioned music and paintings that have accompanied BRWP projects in more recent years. Many past BRWP board members, including Wayne Remus, Ron Deshane and Alan Fox, were at the celebration and entertained the attendees with their shared memories of the formation of the organization and of the many BRWP environmental projects completed across the Bonnechere River Watershed in the early days of the organization. Current BRWP chair Kathy Lindsay, recounted the long list of projects and initiatives that the BRWP has completed since she became a board member in 2007, and chair since 2009, including the Nature in Your Neighbourhood initiative, countless

Thanks to mother, Mary was pretty in pink despite her red hair, columnist recalls

MARY COOK Column

Certainly I wasn't the only pupil with red hair at the Northcote school, but I was the only girl. One boy from the Barr Side Road was also a redhead. The Briscoes came close, but my hair was flaming red, and the bane of my existence. For reasons which I could never understand, redheads were never supposed to wear pink or red, which just happened to be two of my favourite colours. Even my older and much wiser sister, Audrey, had no explanation for it. "That's just the way it is, Mary" she would say when I asked her to explain it to me. Well, mother wasn't the kind of person to live by strict rules. She well did what pleased her and our family, and often scoffed at the things that were considered improper out there in Renfrew County. She stuck to the rules of the Catholic Church, like never eating meat on a Friday, but what she called 'habits' of rural Northcote were often tossed by the wayside. And, one day my life changed forever, and it all had to do with my red hair. It was after the ladies of the area had been at Aunt Bertha's for their regular quilting session. Velma and I, as usual, were playing under the quilt with our dolls. The quilt was finished, and the women were admiring it, stretched out between the two rollers on the backs of the kitchen chairs. As was always the case, there were several pieces of broadcloth

left over, and mother ended up with a good chunk of pink material. It was Mrs. Beam who said, "it's too bad Mary can't wear pink ... there's enough there for a blouse". Well, that's all it took for mother to speak up and say, "she certainly can wear pink ... I think the colour looks wonderful with red hair." There was silence around the table ... no one argued with mother ... her being from New York and all. And so mother went home with the piece of pink broadcloth, with me wondering what she was going to do with it. Would she really make something for me? Well, that very night, the old Singer sewing machine was fair buzzing in the kitchen after supper. It took several nights, but lo and behold, mother managed to produce a lovely blouse with white pearl buttons, rolled-up cuffs and as pink as a freshly picked rose. The next day, Saturday, mother said I could wear the new blouse and go into Renfrew with her to deliver her wares door to door. So there I was handing out trussed up chickens, fresh butter, sticky buns and eggs, proud as punch in my new pink blouse. Instead of heading right for home when everything was delivered, mother said we were stopping at Walker's Store. There were a few things she wanted to pick up. Which was fine with me. She headed right for the counter with the roll-on-roll

of ribbons. Every colour and some as wide as three inches. She took hold of the wide red roll and then the pink one, and told the sales clerk, "I'd like a yard of each, please." I had no idea what she was going to do with all that ribbon, especially in the colours she chose. I found out on Sunday morning when we were getting ready for church. She took the pink ribbon, laid it out on the kitchen table, and made a bow as long as a 12inch ruler. She told me I could wear the new pink blouse to church with a navy skirt she had made from one of Uncle Jack's suits that had come in the hand-me-down box. And then she took the big pink bow, and anchored it to the top of my head with two big black bobby-pins. I ran to the mirror at the back door, and there the pink bow sat like a folded newspaper across my flaming red ringlets, and almost the exact colour of the broadcloth blouse. Big bows were the fashion of the day for young girls, and all through church I kept touching it to make sure I hadn't dreamt the whole thing. It wouldn't be the last time I wore pink. And I knew it would just be a matter of time until mother found something in bright red to put on my back too, just to show the people of Northcote that some rules were made to be broken. The Continuing Care patients of Renfrew Victoria Hospital (RVH) delighted in celebrating the Royal Wedding of His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales to Meghan Markle with a special Royal Tea held on Friday, May 18. The room was beautifully decorated to reflect the British wedding. China teacups, a silver tea and coffee service set, linen tablecloths, and fancy hats for all participants were part of the day. Silver serving trays were served on each table with fancy sandwiches, fresh English scones and a multitude of desserts. Julie Larocque Baillie provided the background music and entertained with select songs for the Royal Tea. It was a stylish affair befitting of the Royal couple. Roxanne Nolan, recreationist at RVH, Rhodes Huckabone and May Hodgins enjoying the tea.

As stated on the Ministry of Seniors Affairs website, June 2018 is the 34th annual Seniors' Month. The theme, "Now's the time to start something new," highlights how aging does not prevent any of us from leading fulfilling lives. Seniors continue to contribute to our community, and we can all benefit from their wisdom, friendship and experience. In Renfrew, programs are shared among Renfrew Victoria Hospital (RVH), Quail Creek Retirement Home, Groves Park Lodge and the Bonnechere Manor. Programs held at these facilities allow old friends to reunite, new friendships to develop, and they offer an opportunity to party and celebrate their contributions to their community. The events are as follows: • June 1 - Opening of Seniors' Month at Groves Park Lodge, at 2 p.m. • June 4 - Prom Dress Fashion Show at Groves Park Lodge, at 2 p.m. • June 6 - Barn Dance at Quail Creek, at 7 p.m. • June 8 - Hymn Sing at Bonnechere Manor, at 2 p.m. • June 11 - Facility Feud at RVH, at 1:30 p.m. • June 13 - Jr./Sr. Games day at RVH, at 1:30 p.m. • June 18 - Bingo at Bonnechere Manor, at 2 p.m. • June 20 - Fancy Hat Tea at Quail Creek, at 2 p.m. • June 22 - RVH Auxiliary barbecue at GEM Hall, at 11:30 a.m. • June 25 - Prom Dance at Groves Park Lodge, at 2 p.m. • June 28 - Strawberry Social at Quail Creek, at 2 p.m. • June 29 - Closing of Seniors' Month at Bonnechere Manor, at 2 p.m. Many memories, laughs and smiles are sure to be shared. The month promises to be both exciting and entertaining.
