The many years of governments and special interest groups having their way with tax dollars is over, John Yakabuski told supporters moments after his party swept to victory. A Progressive Conservative government will lower operating costs and taxes, and invest where it is needed. "I'm looking forward to fixing what is wrong in this province and giving the people the things they really need," said Yakabuski on June 7 at the Pembroke Clarion Conference Centre. At the top of the list in his Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke riding is the twinning of Highway 17 to l See CONSERVATIVES, page 2

Renfrew. The PCs will also bring high-speed broadband access and reliable cellular coverage to rural and remote areas of Ontario. Much of his victory speech was dedicated to thanking family and friends, staff and supporters, and the 69 per cent of voters who got him elected. However, Yakabuski used strong language to chastise "big media's" coverage of premier-designate Doug Ford, saying it "assassinated him on a daily basis" but that he "stuck to his message and would not be sidetracked." Yakabuski also spent more time thanking one person above all others for his long and successful career in politics: Gerald Tracey. The publisher and reporter of the Eganville Leader was first to call Yakabuski 15 years ago when the previous MPP decided

not to run again. It was Tracey who encouraged him to run and has been a staunch supporter ever since, even going so far as to don a "I back Yak" button while reporting on Ford's campaign rally in Renfrew. "Now, I know Gerald has to play it a little cautious sometimes," Yakabuski said. "But Tracey was right when he said we're going to have to go (into politics)." Yakabuski, 61, is looking forward to transitioning from many years in opposition to governing. (His father Paul spent 22 of 24 years on the governing side.) The party whip, former energy critic, and former labour and training critic, is among those expected to make cabinet. "I was told your best day in opposition won't be as good as your worst day in government," he said. The race was easily won this time around, again.

John Yakabuski, right, is joined by wife Vicky and other family members and supporters following the Conservatives’ majority win. Yakabuski's opponents garnered less than half the number of votes he did. Demand for signs rose by 1,300, he said. And volunteers were coming from all corners of the riding. "Feedback was extremely positive. In Arnprior, people were honking

their horns down the road shouting out their support," Yakabuski said. Ford announced his transition team, which includes Mike Coates of the Griffith area who recently lost a federal Conservative nomination race against incumbent Cheryl Gallant.

Liberal candidate says she 'fought noble fight' TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke Liberal candidate Jackie Agnew emotionally thanked her supporters Thursday night at the Rio Tap and Grill in Eganville, after it was clear she did not come out on top in the riding. She admitted it was a tough night for Liberals. Agnew finished in third place with 4,701 votes or 9.75 per cent behind the winner Progressive Conservative (PC) incumbent John Yakabuski who gained 69.19 per cent of the vote locally. As to the provincial PC majority. "I don't understand it and it's a little scary for me," Agnew told reporters. Overall it was not a good night for the Liberals as they only won seven seats, which is not enough for official party status and only 19.56 per cent of the popular vote, the lowest ever for the Liberals. In her speech to her supporters she reminded them why she got involved in this election. "I started this campaign the day Doug Ford became the PC leader," said Agnew. "I saw his ideas gathering popularity within the PC base and I felt obligated to put my name forward not because the fight seemed any easier, but because the voters deserved a positive alternative to those ideas." She said they did not just sit back and watch they got involved and they fought the noble fight. "We can be proud." She held nothing back on why her party was defeated. "My team and I know that this wasn't about us," said Agnew. "I don't take this loss personally because Ontario wanted change as a whole ... Even though I won't be the next MPP and Kathleen Wynne won't be the next premier, I don't regret anything we've done."

She thanked all of her volunteers for their dedication and hard work and especially noted the support from her husband Steve and her children Andy, Bree and Emily. During the last week of the campaign, Agnew said they considered not having a big party and were just going to watch at home. "I would not let this party be cancelled if it were the death of me," said Agnew. "Even though we did not win the most votes, in my mind this was a victory. We learned so much, we met so many people and we did the people of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke a democratic service. This is absolutely a time to celebrate." Speaking to local media after results were confirmed, Agnew admitted Saturday, June 2, when Wynne conceded, was a rough day. "I was angry, I was sad, I didn't understand it and I do think that it had an effect on the outcome of this election. A lot of people who may have voted Liberal started voting NDP for strategic voting," said Agnew. "And I think that hurt me in the election." Watching the results roll in was very hard for her and she says it was disappointing and sad. "Tonight is a tough night, we worked very hard and right up into Saturday, we were confident we might have a chance and then when Kathleen Wynne conceded on Saturday it hurt us, I'll say that and we knew then it wasn't going to be good for us." It was too early for her to analyze how her campaign went locally but she said they were out knocking on doors and calling people but there was more to this election. "This election was about sending a message to the Liberal party and Kathleen Wynne," said Agnew. " People were angry after 14 years and they were just not ready to put us back in again."

NDP candidate Ethel LaValley steals a moment away from supporters on election night at East Side Mario's in Pembroke.

“This experience changed my life. Now it’s my duty to pay it forward.” Vania, Team Member from Burlington, ON Vania arrived in Canada from Cuba with little more than a few dollars in her pocket. Knowing only a bit of English, a trusting Manager recognized her work ethic and passion and gave Vania her first job at Tims. Grateful for this chance, she worked her way from the kitchen to the cash, and all the way up to General Manager. Now Vania looks to hire new Canadians at her restaurant, giving them the same life-changing opportunity she received 17 years ago. Thank you, Vania. NDP candidate met with struggling Renfrew county voters Some local voters unsure of future under PC majority government DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com The NDP candidate in RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke now considers the 2018 Ontario election as a learning experience, but some of Ethel LaValley's supporters are scared of what the future holds under Premier-designate Doug Ford and a PC majority government. On June 7, LaValley gathered with about a dozen others, including former federal candidate Dan McCarthy, at East Side Mario's in Pembroke. LaValley said she enjoyed travelling throughout the riding and meeting voters that were excited by the NDP's lead in some provincewide polls. "People are very enthusiastic and supportive," she said, "and happy to talk and tell me what's going on." However, the longtime Whitney-area mayor said many are

struggling but are too proud to go into details. Jenny Dickson, a resident of Deep River, was at the restaurant that night. Dickson is a library information technician student who said she supports the NDP's stance on funding libraries and minimum wage workers. "Kids' programming is really important," Dickson said. She would like to see corporate taxes increase. Canada currently has one of the lowest corporate tax rates in the industrialized, which Dickson said is not sustainable in light of Ontario's struggling social programs. She doesn't hold out much hope for improvement under a Doug Ford-led PC government. "I think it'll be hell; pretty much a disaster," she said. "Their party is in a mess, they didn't put out a costed platform. Their economics make no sense."

On June 5 students at Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI) were invited to cast their ballots for candidates running in the riding of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke. The next day the student lobby at St. Joseph's Catholic High School (SJHS) was buzzing as students lined up in cast their ballot. On the elementary side, Central Public School students cast ballots last week ahead of the June 7 election. In total more than 2,800 schools registered to participate in the mock election and according to the Student Vote press release all 124 electoral districts are represented. Both high schools have been learning about the election process. Bill Currie, the civics teacher at RCI, has been running the mock elections for a number of years. "It's important because it shows them how to vote. It's easy and it's a chance for them to take part in democracy." Camilo Sebastian is in his last year at RCI. He says the topics discussed at a provincial level, like hydro and cost of postsecondary education, affect the lives of students. "Even though the age to vote is 18, kids do have a good sense of what the lawmakers are doing," said Sebastian. The results of the vote are embargoed until the real counts are released on Thursday night. "I think the vote will be similar to our riding as it is a very strong Conservative riding," said Sebastian. Over at SJHS, Annice O'Rourke and Paula Simon's classes were helping to run the election. Those students have also been learning about the electorate process. "This makes them familiar with the

process when they are older," said O'Rourke. "It's to engage them and make them more involved." "It gets them comfortable with voting and shows them the process," added Simon. "If they understand the process it makes them more connected to the community." Many of the students who are 14 now will be voting in the next provincial election, so it helps prepare them for next time. "I think it's interesting that we get a chance to vote for who will be elected," said Megan Kingsbury, who was helping out at the ballot box and didn't know if the results would be the same as the actual election. "We have a younger perspective because we have different interests."

Have a healthy, happy Father's Day Sunday marks Father's Day, and what better way to celebrate than with healthy males in your life. Canadian Men's Health Week is a nationally recognized week dedicated to improving the health of men in our country. From June 11 to 17, the week serves as an opportunity to raise awareness of men's health issues and provide tips and tools for men and their families to live healthier lives. New Canadian research, conducted on behalf of the Canadian Men's Health Foundation, finds 72 per cent of men regularly demonstrate two or more unhealthy habits, including a poor diet, smoking cigarettes, problem drinking, not exercising or not getting regular sleep. The study is the first in this country to look at health behaviours rather than diseases, and the first to simultaneously look at five key health behaviours that help prevent chronic disease (diet, sleep, exercise, smoking and drinking). • 62 per cent of Canadian men have an unhealthy diet; • 54 per cent of Canadian men under or over sleep; .•59 per cent of Canadian men do not get 150 minutes of moderate-to-strenuous exercise per week; • 39 per cent of Canadian men have unhealthy alcohol consumption; and • 20 per cent of Canadian men smoke cigarettes. Only six per cent of respondents exhibited no unhealthy behaviours and were classified as 'very healthy.' Those who exhibited one bad habit were deemed healthy (22 per cent). Men with two unhealthy behaviours were considered borderline (31 per cent) and those with three or more of the above behaviours were classified as unhealthy (42 per cent). Wayne Hartrick, president of the CMHF, points out that it doesn't take much for a man to go from the "unhealthy" category to the "healthy" category. "Think of these categories as a ladder. Most Canadian men can move up a rung by changing only one bad habit. They can go up two rungs by changing two behaviours, like eating five fist-sized servings of fruit and getting seven hours of sleep. The CMHF website DontChangeMuch.ca offers easy to follow, medically-backed simple tips and tools to help men and their families live healthier lives. Canadian Men's Health Foundation (CMHF) is a national, not for profit organization with a mission to inspire Canadian men and their families to live healthier lives. • LETTERS & COMMENTARY • Be diligent when smoking To the editor: The Arnprior Fire Department is reminding the public to be diligent when discarding smoking materials. According to the National Fire Protection Association, careless use of smoking materials is the leading cause of fire deaths; subsequently the department would like to offer these tips:

Smoking safety • If you smoke, use only fire-safe cigarettes. • If you smoke, smoke outside. Most deaths result from fires that started in living rooms, family rooms and dens or in bedrooms. • Keep a careful eye on anyone using alcohol while smoking.

• Keep cigarettes, lighters, matches, and other smoking materials up high, out of the reach of children, in a locked cabinet.

Put it out • Use a deep, sturdy ashtray. Place it away from anything that can burn. • Do not discard cigarettes in vegetation such as mulch, potted plants or landscaping, peat moss, dried grasses, leaves or anything that could ignite easily. • Before you throw away butts and ashes, make sure they are out, and dousing in water or sand is the best way to do that.

Smoking and medical oxygen • Never smoke and never allow anyone to smoke where medical oxygen is

As are other species of Ontario bats, Big Brown Bats are being killed by a lethal fungus. of infected bats. When bats go dormant, their lowered internal temperature becomes ideal for the fungus to spread through them. The fungus doesn't kill bats outright, but makes them restless, causing them to burn up energy reserves essential for surviving winter. Sometimes infected bats fly out of their hibernaculum and die atop the snow. Once a bat is infected, the fungus quickly spreads to others in the hibernaculum, usually killing 90 - 100 per cent of the colony in a few years. The fungus came to North America from Europe (where it doesn't affect the bats) apparently on the shoes of spelunkers (cavers). In 10 mere years this lethal fungus has spread from a single cave in New York to seven provinces and 32 states, in the process killing countless millions of bats. White-nose syndrome is the most serious threat ever posed to any vertebrate group in North America. In the past few years the fungus has spread to several midwestern and western states where fear is that it will continue its spread until many previously healthy species of bats,

some quite common, become endangered or even go extinct. See: www.whitenosesyndrome.org for an up-to-date map of the location of this fungus in North America. In Ontario, one formerly very common species, the little brown myotis (little brown bat), may soon appear on the endangered species list. Four other Ontario species - big brown bat, eastern small-footed bat, tricolored bat and northern myotis (northern long-eared bat) - have also contracted the disease. Unlike birds, whose voices tell us they are present, bats are silent creatures. Only the absence of their shadowy forms flitting erratically through the evening sky tells us they are gone. And that is a very sad thing indeed. The Nature email is mruntz@start.ca – Michael Runtz is a longtime columnist who teaches natural history and ornithology at Carleton University. When I was young, I loved being outside when the day began fading into night. As the daytime players exited the stage, a new set of actors made an appearance. Eastern whippoor-wills welcomed the night with energetic, name-giving songs while raccoons wandered around on their nocturnal prowls. And overhead, bats fluttered on silent wings, snatching beetles from the dim after detecting them with their inaudible radar. Today, raccoons have become even more common while whip-poor-wills have sadly gone the other direction. Even more alarming is the near absence of bats in the crepuscular hours. Their disappearance is not only a local one; throughout eastern North America bats are vanishing from the landscape. Some bats are being killed by wind turbines, but not by colliding with the turning blades. As they pass through the turbines, their little lungs explode because of the pressure change. However, there is a far more lethal killer out there. It is not a machine, but a fungus that attacks bats that roost communally in winter in damp, cool sites called hibernacula. Known as the white-nose syndrome fungus, Pseudogymnoascus destructans enters a bat after it contacts its spores, often by making physical contact with an infected bat. The disease's name arises from the white fungus that appears on the face and wings

Renfrew students embark on Water Walk

TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com Water is all around us in Renfrew, from the little streams, to the mighty rivers and everything in between. On a wet June 5, Jennifer Wroe's Grade 3 and 4 class from Queen Elizabeth Public School challenged themselves to complete a 10 kilometre Water Walk. The goal of the walk was to raise awareness about the local waterways and the importance of water as a natural resource. The class was inspired by water advocate Autumn Peltier, from Manitoulin Island, who walks around lakes and rivers to spread awareness on the importance of water. She also recently spoke at the United Nations in New York City for International Water Day. The students were shocked to learn that 120 communities in Canada did not have access to clean water. The students started at the school, first stop was Smiths Creek where they

met up with Kathy Lindsay from the Bonnechere River Watershed Project, who gave them a guided tour to Ma-Te-Way Park to discuss the ravine, also stopping along the old beach. Next up they headed to Beauman Waste Management to investigate water samples and discuss the location of water beside the plant. They had lunch at near the historic Renfrew Swinging Bridge and discussed how the water along the Bonnechere River makes electricity. To finish off they stopped at Tracey's Dairy and walked along the creek before going back to school. Each student in the class also wrote a letter to the editor to express their concerns about water and why they wanted to participate in a water walk, among the comments are as follows: Liam: Pollution is the worst for water. It goes into the clouds and makes acid rain, which kills fish. Leo: Did you know, that even some people in Ontario have to walk for water. Hopefully, people will no-

Anyone can make a difference. Joseph: Why is water so important? Water keeps us alive and going. Sarah: We are doing a water walk because people need to stop littering so we can always drink some fresh water. Jadyn: We do this so peo-

ple can understand to help the water. Aubrey: If water was not here we would not be here. Water is very important. People are using too much water or they are throwing garbage in it. Alida: People need to not waste water. Some people have dirty water. Let's help people get clean water. Ella: Most of our water

around the world isn't even clean. 97 per cent is dirty water, 2 per cent is snow or ice and 1 per cent is left for us. We don't have much and we need to use it properly. Taavi: Less than one per cent of earth's eater is good. Will you stop wasting water now? Bryan: It is unfair that rich countries can waste water on big fountains.

People have to walk for water when we can get it from our taps. Other people have to drink dirty water when we get to drink clean water. Everyone has the right to clean water. Aidan: Do you think water is important? People have to walk to get water in other countries. Connor: Wee don't want people to be littering in the water. Andee: We want everyone to have clean water and not pollute. Marlie: Over pumping and over taping, we are standing up for water. We care! Dalton: I want the water to be clean. I want people who don't have water to have water. Marcie-lee: People outside of Toronto on a reserve don't have access to clean water. A lot of people's lives are at risk. Ava: Have you ever imagined a life without water? Well if you haven't we could actually run out of water one day. We are over using our water. James: Help our water please. Water is important.

County and Algonquin College enter into new partnership MICHAEL BARBER County of Renfrew A critical shortage of personal support workers in Renfrew has led to a partnership between Algonquin College and the County of Renfrew to deliver a personal support worker program at Bonnechere Manor. The program will begin in January of 2019 and will be solely delivered at the long-term care home, providing students with an exceptional opportunity to learn within one of the largest health-care settings in the county. Bonnechere Manor's director of long-term care, Shelley Sheedy, says it's an exciting partnership, particularly for students. "Immersion in our home's setting will ensure the students acquire the values required to work in a long-term care environment. Our residents and staff are very familiar with having Algonquin students on-site and welcome this more integrated partnership," says Sheedy. Over the past several months, Bonnechere Manor as well as other health-care providers in the region, have had difficulty filling personal support worker positions. An aging population has put a lot of pressure on the health-care system and personal support workers (PSWs) are on the front line in providing support services to the elderly and adults who need personal care. Algonquin College's chair of health and community studies, Megan Conway, says the college's top priority is to create programming opportunities that meet the

demands of the labour market. "In this situation we have a health-care partner that is struggling to fill vacancies for personal support workers and is willing to make space available to the college to deliver a program. This is a great example of a collaborative learning model that benefits the employer, students and the college. We are very pleased to offer this program in Renfrew where the need for highly trained PSW's is great and currently unmet. " Elected officials with the County of Renfrew are highly supportive of the partnership. County Warden Jennifer Murphy calls it a proactive step that "Supports Bonnechere Manor's longer-range PSW recruitment plan, adding it also helps the many other health-care organizations that rely on PSWs as the backbone of their health-care teams." Bonnechere Manor is a 180 bed long-term care home that has been operating in Renfrew since 1958. The home provides 24 hour nursing care, accommodations, meals, physiotherapy programs and a variety of social and recreational activities for its residents. Algonquin College has been operating since 1967 and offers 21 full-time programs at its Pembroke campus. The college delivers several health-care programs including personal support worker, practical nursing and the bachelor of science in nursing. Over the years, students in these programs have benefited from clinical placements provided at several health-care facilities including Bonnechere Manor.

Pawramedics holds furbaby first aid training in Renfrew There is no 911 for dogs or cats. When an emergency strikes, an animal relies on its owner to get them out of trouble. Arnprior resident Jackie Stephens operates Pawramedics, a program offering life-saving knowledge and training for pet owners. Pawramedics conducted its first ever course in Renfrew on Saturday, June 9, held at the Carswell Alley & Gallery. "It is important to act fast and know what to do when there is a life or death emergency," Stephens told the Renfrew Mercury. By way of Pawramedics, "individuals will learn how to perform CPR on a dog, and they will be taught what to do if an animal is choking," she said. Using 'Lady,' her own dog, Stephens also demonstrates what every pet owner should do when there is a bleeding situation. Un-

like people, first aid on pets can involve some unique challenges. 'Lady' is known for having lots of patience. The one-and-a-halfyear-old rescue dog is bandaged and muzzled several times throughout the one-day course. "We also stress prevention," Stephens noted. An owner learns how to prevent his or her pet from becoming seriously sick or injured by pet proofing his or her home. Pawramedics was developed with feedback from industry experts: Veterinarians, veterinary technicians and groomers. "During the afternoon session, we discuss when something is an emergency or whether it can be managed at home," Stephens said. "Knowing the difference can save a lot of money." Saturday's course had five participants: four pet owners and one pet professional. Laura Hanek runs Laura's Pet Services in Petawawa

"I have a few clients who have health issues," Hanek explained. "They need medication and one has a seizure disorder." "I want to be better prepared," she added. The cost of the Pawramedics course is $150 plus tax. A portion of Saturday's proceeds went to the Valley Animal Rescue and Foster program, a foster-based animal rescue and registered charity serving the needs of unwanted and abandoned animals in Renfrew and the Ottawa Valley. For more information, visit the Pawramedics Facebook page. "Our Facebook is the best way to keep in touch and find our where we will be next," Stephens said.

sudoku

l

is enrs a r B Tea

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

crossword

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, this week seems like a race, but you may be losing steam. With a lot of distance still left to cover, it’s time to conserve your energy and find some assistance.

LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, if your energy levels are waning, find a way to put some hop in your step. Take a break from work if necessary. This is a great way to recharge.

SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, if you are feeling high strung or nervous, you may just need to take a little time away from a situation to reorient yourself. Come back with a fresh perspective.

TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, your imagination is very active lately, so much so that it may make it difficult to concentrate on anything else. Make an effort to get work done in spite of the distractions.

VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, you haven’t yet found your groove at work, but don’t get discouraged because it will happen. Pay attention to others around you and how they act.

CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, don’t put others off by being too serious. Learn how to let loose a little bit this week and your friends will flock to you in no time at all.

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, others may misinterpret your enthusiasm for a carefree nature. However, you are actually busy getting the job done — even if you’re having some fun doing it.

LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Even if others think you are ambivalent, you possess a clear picture of what you want and where you are heading, Libra. Don’t let others’ misconceptions sway you.

CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 It’s possible you may misread someone’s intentions, and it could get you in a bit of hot water, Cancer. Don’t make any assumptions and apologize if you make mistakes.

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, if left to your own devices, you can get your work done quickly. But overcoming distractions may be difficult in the days ahead. Do your best to stay the course.

Father's Day challenge coming to Dragonfly

BILL RAINBOTH The great news keeps coming from Dragonfly Golf Links. Congratulations to Marc Bouris for his hole in one on No. 5 last week. Marc used his new favourite club, an 8 iron. Speaking of great shots, we are hoping to see a lot of them this coming Father's Day: We will be having a Closest to the Pin contest on our beautiful signature 18th hole. The winner of the contest wins a 2018 mem-

bership for the balance of the season. Contestants only need only tell us that they are fathers to qualify. I expect this day will be heavily booked, so if you have not already reserved your tee time - please do so. On to my regular report where we begin with Friday Ladies Stroke Play League results. Winning first place was Therese Williams, who was followed closely by Marion Knox and Kathy Hamilton in the second and third

place positions. There were no winners for the hidden hole, so the pot will grow until they try again next week. Monday Men's League was blown away by the Weapons of Grass Destruction who finished in first place, with the team from Renfrew Pizzaria finishing in the runner-up position. Closest to the pin winners were Adrian Moyes on No. 13, and Dragonfly member Gord Barney was closest on No. 18. TF Custom signs

won a tie breaker with Valley Automation & Controls to win A flight on Tuesday, while the Dragonflyslayers won B flight. Mike McDonald was closest to the pin on No. 13, and Gord Thompson was closest on No. 18. Home Health & Medical supplies had the lowest gross score of the week, and were declared the winners of A flight on Wednesday night. Valley Ventilation bested the next best team in B flight to win the division easily. Todd Stew-

ard was closest to the pin on No. 13 and Braeden Cameron was closest on No. 18. Our Thursday Ladies League played the first week of the two-week scoring system so there are no team prizes to report. Our closest to the pin winners were Beth Ellis on No. 5, Allison Murphy on No. 7, Laurie Coady on No. 13 and Karen Carty on No. 18. Good shooting, ladies! Until next time, happy golfing!

Links of Friendship golf tournament celebrates 50 years The Links of Friendship Golf Tournament and reunion will be celebrating its 50th edition at the Renfrew Golf Club June 22 and 23. The tournament was started by former Renfrew resident Mike Moore in 1969 as a reunion and golf game for former classmates and friends. The original gathering was among 28 participants most of whom were friends and high school classmates in the early 60s and also played sports and particularly golf at the Renfrew Golf Club. Over the years the reunion and golf has grown to include friends of friends, many younger players, and children and grandchildren of some of the original players. Friday evening will be a nostalgia night and dinner at 7 p.m. Saturday the golf tournament with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. followed by dinner and prizes. Everyone is welcome to come out and reacquaint with friends from that era. The 11 Annual Hike for Hospice Renfrew was held on Sunday May 6th, 2018 led by the McVeigh-Sharpe Family hiking in gratitude and memory of their Mother Leigh McVeigh-Sharpe who passed away at Hospice Renfrew in 2017. This year we had a beautiful spring day to celebrate Hospice in our community with over 1000 people attending our event. This in itself is truly amazing! People and teams of all ages and sizes came out to support Hospice raising over $135,000. Once again the theme “IT TAKES A TEAM” was embraced with many hiking in memory of a loved one who had received care at Hospice Renfrew. We were very excited to see many new teams becoming ambassadors for Hospice coming out simply to support our organization.

Sad are the hearts that love you, Silent are the tears that fall, living our lives without you, Is the hardest part of all. You did so many things for us, Your heart was kind and true, And when we needed someone, We could always count on you. The special years will not return, When we were all together, but with the love within our hearts, You will walk with us forever. Step by step or stride by stride, it all makes a difference. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, is s a disease that gradually paralyzes people because the brain is no longer able to communicate with the muscles of the body that we are typically able to move at will. ALS Canada says 3,000 Canadians are currently living with ALS and each day in Canada two to three people die of ALS. Jessica Forgie is organizing the Strides for ALS Walk/Run - June 23 at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre - for her Aunt Linda Hull (Mahusky), who was diagnosed with ALS in 2016. "I organize this event in my Aunt's honour," said Forgie in an email on the fundraiser. "The purpose of this event is to raise awareness to the severity of ALS, as well as raise funds for ALS Canada. And this year, half of the proceeds will also be going to Hospice Renfrew." A representative from ALS Canada will also be on hand to answer any questions regarding ALS and about the organization. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m., and the run/walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a threekilometre, 5-km and 10-km route on the Millennium Trail, starting from the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre. Cost for the event is $10 for the 3-km route, $15 for the 5-km and $20 for the 10-km. For more information, email Forgie: Jmahusky@hotmail.com.

28 OPINION

Miss Crosby teaches how a penny saved is a penny earned Despite lessons, Father never trusted the bank, Mary Cook writes

MARY COOK Column The whole idea to Father was just a shade off-centre. He had never heard of children being encouraged to put money in a bank. Didn't everyone know there was a Depression on? Where were these pennies to come from?

The issue was the penny bank deposits, a system where each of us was encouraged to bring a penny to school in the hope of teaching us about thrift and promoting a desire to save. Of course, Miss Crosby hadn't counted on people like Father, who grew up believing that money put in a bank was gone forever! We came home from school that day, early in the year, clutching little oblong boxes with printing on one side that said, A Penny Saved, Is a Penny Earned. We had to take the boxes back to school the next day, after our parents looked them over and decided Miss Crosby wasn't collecting money for her own benefit. But she had explained it all to us in great length. We were to put coins in as often as we could, each of us keeping track in our own little books, and once a week the

boxes were to be emptied, and the money taken into Renfrew and deposited into something called a bank account, which would be in our very own name. We were very excited when we explained it all to Father and Mother that night, and we were sure it would just be a matter of time until we were all millionaires. But as soon as we mentioned the word "bank," the trouble began. As far as Father was concerned, the bank was just about the most unsafe place in the entire world to put money. "It's all mixed up in there with everyone else's, and besides, who is to say the bank won't go broke, too? And then where would your money be?" Mother kept saying, "Now, Albert, I'm sure the banks are honest, and so is Miss Crosby." She told him we wouldn't

have much to put in there, anyway, and so we each had a penny in our little cardboard box when we went back to school the next day, with Father convinced it was the last we would see of our money. Miss Crosby had lined up all the little boxes on the windowsill opposite of her desk. Ever since that day, we trucked up to our own little box and put a penny inside each week - or more if Mother could find any extra in her egg-money sugar bowl. And each time, we made an entry in our little book and tucked it back in the drawer under our desk. That first Friday, just before the day ended, the boxes were gathered up, the flaps were opened, and much to our horror the contents of every box were mixed together on top of Miss Crosby's desk. Emerson was the first to react: "I knew it, Fa-

ther was right." Miss Crosby did some fast figuring, and then dumped the entire pile of money into a brown paper bag, and we just knew it was gone forever! We went home, dragging our feet, scared to tell Father what had happened and to admit that, unless some genius could figure out who had what, we'd never see our money again. Well, on Monday, the penny boxes were back on the window sill at the Northcote School, and on each desk was our own little book. We gingerly opened them, and were stunned to see that the amount matched the figure we had been writing when we made our penny deposits! We brought a few more pennies that week, figured we'd give the system a bit more chance, even though we couldn't figure out how we could get the money out if

we wanted it. But Miss Crosby assured us we could. That test came when school was just about to close for the summer. We were all taught how to write a cheque to the Red Cross for 10 cents each, and sure enough, with only a few days left, the bank showed we had taken out 10 cents. None of us ever had more than $1 in the bank all the time we went to the Northcote School, but the penny boxes were enough to convince us that, indeed, a penny saved was a penny earned. Father never did trust the bank. Every cent he had was kept in a glass bowl in the kitchen cupboard with his gold watch and his ivoryhandled jackknife. – Mary is a longtime writer with several books in print and in electronic copies. "Mary Cook's Memories" appears as a regular column.
