"People love to live here and are dedicated to the parish," said co-organizer Sister Zita O'Grady, seated under the big tent with more than 100 others sharing lunch as live music entertained. "And many others have come back because this is where their roots are." The 13-year pastoral assistant participated in morning mass June 16, presided over by Bishop l See EVENT, page 4

Renfrew council goes in camera again to discuss former fire chief TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com On June 12 Renfrew council discussed two issues in camera for approximately one hour. The first listed on the agenda was to discuss a possible sale of townowned lands and the second was to update council on the potential litigation involving the former fire chief. After the meeting, reeve Peter Emon said the issue is moving to mediation. "We are looking to set a mediation date, where both sides will present, a chance to resolve any outstanding issues," said Emon. Emon also noted no claim has been filed by former Renfrew fire chief Guy Longtin after the town implemented a new mandatory retirement age of 60 in May, forcing Longtin into retirement. The human resources

committee met on June 12 to work on a draft position description that is still in the works. "It will be advertised by the end of the month and the description will be finalized with new responsibilities," said Emon. As to the land sale, the clerk and the mayor have been authorized to enter into discussions for possible sale of town lands.

Fair The Town of Renfrew approved the application for the Renfrew Fair, which is applying for a temporary extension to the existing liquor licence for an outdoor beer garden. The 164th annual Renfrew Fair is set for Sept. 5 to 9 and the board is formally applying for the extension for Wednesday and Thursday from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. and Friday and Saturday from 2 p.m. to 1 a.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

Zoning Renfrew council held a public meeting on the zoning applications at 29 Bridge St. (former office of Renfrew Hydro) and also approved the change from general commercial to downtown commercial holding. The purpose of the change is to redevelop the building with commercial on the main floor and a dwelling on the second story. Emon noted it is a good use of reusing the building and congratulated them for repurposing the building so it becomes part of downtown.

New equipment The town approved the purchase of five items of equipment to be used by both the parks and recreation department and the development and works including a boom, two mowers, a RTV and a trailer.

The items were all identified in the 2018 budget with financing of the purchases from the current taxation. The budget for the items was set at $146,000 and they came in under budget by $2,548. Coun. Tom Sidney congratulated staff for coming under budget and doing their homework on the purchases.

Open house The Town of Renfrew is also hosting an open house on Wednesday, June 20 for the unveiling of the design concepts for the post office building and the old Bargain Shop (on Raglan Street). The meeting starts at 7 p.m. upstairs at the Ma-TeWay Activity Centre and there will be presentations at approximately 7:20 p.m. The public will be able to ask questions to town staff, councillors and the developers about the new developments.

Inquest date set for death of construction worker Nine witnesses expected at September inquest in Renfrew An inquest into the death of a construction worker on Highway 17 near Arnprior will be held in Renfrew this September. Dr. Louise McNaughton-Filion, regional supervising coroner for East Region, Ottawa office, announced June 8 that a date has been scheduled for the inquest into the death of Danniel William Milton. Milton, 42, died on April 25, 2016, when he was hit by a vehicle while working at a highway construction project in on Highway 17 west of Campbell Drive. "An inquest is manda-

tory under the Coroners Act," says a news release. "The inquest will examine the events surrounding Mr. Milton's death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths." The inquest is expected to last three days and to hear from approximately nine witnesses. It will begin at 9 a.m. on Sept. 17, at the Renfrew Municipal Building, 127 Raglan St. South. "Dr. Robert Reddoch will preside as inquest coroner and Jeffery Richardson will be counsel to the coroner," the release says.

Town under water advisory A section of the Town of Renfrew was under a precautionary boil water advisory on Monday. The town was advised of the order by the Renfrew County District Health Unit as of 4:30 p.m. on June 18. The advisory was in effect for all homes and businesses north of the Bonnechere River (including Stewart and Bruce street areas). The advisory was in place for approximately 450 homes and businesses and was expected to be lifted on Wednesday. Tim Hortons was closed on Tuesday morning with a sign stating "this restaurant will be closed until approximately 4:30 p.m. tomorrow when the health department can assure us that it is safe to serve you our products." Wendy's was also closed. The Rocky Mountain House Restaurant was open as it had brought in ice/water and was washing items according to health unit procedures (boiling water). President and chief executive officer at the Renfrew Victoria Hospital Randy Penney says the hospital was without water for a couple of hours on Monday. "It was a major, major issue for the hospital and this is what we prepare for," said Penney on Tuesday morning. "It was a good test and luckily it didn't extend for a long time." The hospital was required to triage all of the clinical areas and the dialysis unit was most impacted by the outage. They had to immediately and safely take patients off the treatment until alternatives could be implemented on a patient specific basis. They did have a contingency plan in place and were able to bring in water from satellite unites in Pembroke and Barry's Bay. On Tuesday the hospital was almost back to normal and was only using bottle water, not using ice machines and cooking using boiling water. Residents south of the Bonnechere River were instructed to continue normal water use. On Monday evening the town did two sets of samples in the affected area. "When the samples come back clear we will be able to lift the boil water advisory and that is currently anticipated for Wednesday morning," Mike Asselin, director of development and works for the Town of Renfrew said on Monday shortly after 5

“I want to turn a family legacy into a community legacy.” Chris, Restaurant Owner from Hamilton, ON As a third-generation Restaurant Owner, it isn’t surprising that Chris spent his childhood inside a Tim Hortons. There, his family taught him the ins and outs of business operations, and that the business is about more than serving cups of coffee. It’s about care. Now, Chris wakes up each morning excited to create a better community for his team and his guests. He also involves his children whenever he can, hoping they’ll continue in his legacy of giving back. Thank you, Chris. And thanks to all our Owners who make our community stronger.

p.m. As of 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Asselin said the earliest the advisory would be lifted would be 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20. The water advisory does not affect the flushing of toilets, only water consumption, say officials. "Anyone using water for human consumption can bring water to a rolling boil for one minute before consuming it," said Asselin. "The notice is in place until further notice and it is a precaution as a result of low pressure in the water distribution centre caused by a break." The water main break occurred under Smith's Creek near Stewart Park. The town received consumer concerns at approximately 12:40 p.m. It investigated and found the water main break at approximately 2 p.m. "We had the section isolated by 2:20 p.m. and pressure restored in the system at 2:22 p.m.," said Asselin. On Tuesday morning Asselin clarified that when residents first reported not having water the town informed them to boil any water as a precaution. There was some confusion. The town's Facebook page at first said to boil water and then it was removed. "There was a period of time when we were assessing the cause and it was difficult to provide a response not knowing what was happening so the town erred on the side of caution in advance of the formal boil water advisory," said Asselin. At 2:59 p.m. on Monday the health unit issued a Tweet: "As a precaution, all residents and businesses of the Town of Renfrew are being advised to boil their water or use bottled water until further notice." Courtney Trombley, communications co-ordinator with the health unit confirmed the formal notice was issued to the town at 4:30 p.m. "The town put out the precautionary advisory and the health unit was supporting that message," said Trombley. The health unit issued the advisory and it is the town's responsibility to get the notice out to the public. Renfrew town staff delivered notices door-to-door Monday night (June 18) in the affected area. For more information on "How to use water during a precautionary boil water advisory" visit the health units website: www.rcdhu.com. And for further updates, please visit www.insideottawavalley.com.

TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com It will be one price admission and rides for the 164th annual Renfrew Fair from Sept. 5 to 9. The new price tag is $20 per person, which includes admission and all rides. Carter Shows is back and promising 24 rides plus their new ferris wheel. Fair manager Judy Dobec is enthusiastic about the changes. "We are hoping to attract many people who couldn't afford the price before and we are hoping for a huge turnout," said Dobec. "We are excited here. I hope the public is as excited as we are and hope the sun shines for five days." The advance passes will still be available at a cost of $40 for five admissions, rides not included. "For those who don't want the rides we encourage them to purchase the advance passes," said Dobec. Advance passes will be available for sale at the Armouries and regular outlets until Friday, Aug. 31. The fair will start on the first Wednesday of September with one of the biggest and best demo derbies in the Ottawa Valley. On Thursday will be the king of the valley, performer Wayne Rostad. "Wayne performed here back in 2009 and he had an excellent audience. Yhe grandstand was full," said Dobec. "We are hoping for a good turn out for him. He is an entertainer and a story teller." During country night on Friday will be the Hunter Brothers, known for such hits

as 'Those were the Nights,' 'Born and Raised,' and 'Getaway'. "They are five brothers from Saskatchewan and they are moving up very quickly on the new country charts," said Dobec. Rocking the stage on Saturday night is Canadian icon Sass Jordan, who has multiple Juno wins and was also on Canadian Idol. "Everyone knows her!" said Dobec. On Sunday the RCMP Musical Ride will perform at 2 p.m. and they will host a meet and greet with the public immediately following their performance for photos with the horses and riders. The last time they were in Renfrew was for the fair's 150th anniversary. "They are a fantastic show," said Dobec. "We have put in several requests and they

actually contacted us and that's a real family show. Everyone will enjoy them." Also new this year the fair is hosting a mechanical bull fundraising competition on the Friday evening. The winning team will be given a percentage of the proceeds to donate to their charity of choice. Each team will have four members and pay $100 to enter. Organizers say this is a wonderful opportunity to support the community and the local fair. When the competition is done everyone will have the opportunity to ride the bull for free. Also back is the ever-popular Exhibit Hall competition a chance to enter flowers, garden produce, crafts, baking and more. All you need is to purchase a $5 membership and a $1 for kids, which entitles you to

GRAND ROUNDS Ladies’ evening doubles as fundraiser Community-minded people like Laury and Paul Lamoureux, owners of the Canadian Tire store in Renfrew, help to make a difference by getting the community involved. Fun and fundraising were combined at the first ever Ladies Night held at the store on Sunday June 10. Balloons, entertainment, free swag bags and candy bar, draws, deals, and 10% off everything in the store, guest vendors, and more added to the experience. The event was a huge success, as evidenced by the number of ladies lined up outside well before the doors opened at 6 pm. The Lamoureuxs are no strangers to organizing this kind of event having hosted Ladies Night at their former location in Calgary.

“We held one in our previous store and it was a huge success,” said Laury Lamoureux. The Lamoureuxs chose Renfrew Victoria Hospital Foundation as the recipient of proceeds from the sale of hot dogs, drinks and ice cream from the evening. “I think RVH is a great cause. It’s extremely important to have hospital funding to support the critical services it provides to our community,” shared Laury. Sarah Robinson, RVH Foundation Executive Director, was also on hand for the evening and expressed her thanks to the Lamoureuxs. “We are grateful for partners like Paul and Laury for taking a leadership role in the community and choosing RVH as their charity of choice for Ladies Night.”

Shoppers enjoyed a fun-filled evening of great giveaways, entertainment and 10% off everything in the store as Laury and Paul Lamoureux opened Canadian Tire for Ladies’ Night on June 10 in support of the Renfrew Victoria Hospital Foundation.

For more information on hosting a fundraising event, contact the Foundation at 613-432-4851 ext. 263, or email robinsonsa@renfrewhosp.com

Caution: roadwork ahead Construction season is upon us and with that comes an increased need for motorists to pay attention and adjust their driving accordingly. The price for not doing so can be devastating. It was just two years ago in April 2016 when Daniel William Milton, 42, was hit and killed by a vehicle while working at a highway construction project on Highway 17 west of Campbell Drive. Another worker was seriously injured and airlifted to hospital. In the fall of that year, a 70-year-old man was charged with careless driving. This fall, an inquest will be held in Renfrew to examine the events surrounding Milton's death. The jury may then make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths. It's only fair for those who work on our roads to have a safe and healthy workplace. With the provincial Conservatives' renewed commitment to get the four-laning of Highway 17 from Arnprior to Renfrew on the five-year plan, a major downtown reconstruction project in Renfrew and numerous smaller projects ongoing this summer, the need for safety is imperative. And with the many road construction projects underway in the Ottawa Valley and beyond, OPP are reminding motorists of the importance of construction zone safety and reducing speed when entering construction zones. OPP say drivers are advised to proceed with caution when approaching a construction zone and to obey all warning signs, people and/or devices that are directing traffic through the area. It is an offence under the Highway Traffic Act to disobey STOP or SLOW signs displayed by a traffic-control person. Lower speeds are often posted in construction zones to increase worker safety and to reflect increased road hazards such as construction vehicles, uneven or gravel surfaces and narrowed lanes, say OPP. Motorists are reminded that speeding fines are doubled in construction zones when workers are present. There are ways to be as prepared as possible for what you might encounter on the roads. Information on roads and construction projects in Ontario can be accessed through the Ministry of Transportation's Traveller Information Services, which provides road information for provincial highways in Ontario, by calling 511 or by visiting the MTO Ontario 511 website at www.ontario.ca/511. Let's respect workers by making the choice to drive safely this summer.

Many birds have become less common with the loss of forest habitat due to agricultural and urban spread. A few species, however, have found this conversion to be to their liking. One such bird is the brownheaded cowbird, a species formerly found in western prairies where it lived a nomadic life, following herds of buffalo and abandoning all parental duties by placing its eggs in other birds' nests. When the buffalo herds vanished from the landscape, and eastern forests were replaced by farmland where herds of cattle contentedly roamed, cowbirds spread east. Here they thrived, introducing a hundred other species of birds to their parasitic ways. While many people despise cowbirds for burdening other birds with their young, we should admire them for their ingenuity and complexity of their lives. But another species of bird has also been called "cow bird." It is a small egret currently found through much of the United States and parts of southern Canada. However, the cattle egret is native not to North America but to eastern Africa. Currently, one has taken up residency in a farmer's field near Brighton. So how did a small heron-type bird from Africa find its way to Brighton? Did it catch a ride on a large ship, as some songbirds have been known to do? Was it smuggled across the ocean inside the cargo bay of a large plane? Actually, cattle egrets crossed the ocean unassisted, first settling in South America in the late 1800s, then spread-

ing to the West Indies and eventually moving into Mexico and Florida by the mid 1900s. First recorded breeding in Florida was in 1953, which is about the time one appeared in Newfoundland. Cattle egrets first nested in California in 1970 and in southern Ontario in 1962. The Americas are not the only continents to be colonized by these adventurous birds. Cattle egrets have expanded their range around the world, and are now found in virtually all regions except those with extremely inhospitable conditions such as in Antarctica and vast deserts. Their remarkable wanderings have earned them the gold medal for the greatest and fastest range extension by any bird in the world. After an unsuccessful attempt to see the cattle egret on Huff Road near Brighton, present since May 23, I recently tried again. This time while scanning a group of white cattle lying down near a watering hole, I saw a small white heron

walk out from among them. The cattle egret boldly strolled around the great beasts, plucking flies from their hides. The cows seemed to enjoy its efforts for they not only tolerated the little fellow but also even lowered their heads to allow it to remove pesky flies from their nostrils and around their eyes. For about an hour I watched the cattle egret fearlessly remove flies from the cows that dwarfed it. With a food supply that seems to be endless, it will likely stick around for many weeks to come. The cows will certainly enjoy its continued company, for it provides a real service to them. Perhaps this relationship should be considered to be a case of free "groom and board!" We're back. The McDougall Mill Museum is open and running again. We have an almost brand-new staff working with us this year, bringing their talents and enthusiasm with them. Do come in and meet them. They will be excited to show you around. Emily Livingstone is back again from last year. Our new staff, under the supervision of Margaret Dubeau, are Logan Wright, Rebecca Kelly, Anastasia Bell and Tristan Remus. This season, there are plans to redo the second floor with its military display, vintage costumes, quilt collection and other items. As well, we will be rotating some of the existing displays so that there will be something new for everyone to enjoy. Last year, I endeavoured to focus on a number of the many collections we own. This time, I will start with the toy collection. The fact that many of the toys I

played with as a child are in a museum certainly makes me feel my age! Given the high-tech character of the games children play today, I wonder what they would think of such unsophisticated games like Pickup Sticks, Tiddledy Winks, Parchesi, Dominoes and Old Maid. Yet, surprisingly, today board games are enjoying a renaissance in popularity. Back in the days of yore, toys certainly seemed very genderspecific. For the boys, there were campaigns to wage with toy soldiers, model tanks and airplanes. What young boy didn't engage in "Cowboys and Indians" at some point? There was also an endless variety of dinky toys, with seemingly every make and model of car and truck, and even garages to park and have someone check under the hood. And after a tough afternoon at play, a youngster could kick back and enjoy a Salem candy cigarette, flavour fresh! For the girls, they quickly learned just how much fun housework could be while playing with their mini washing machines, sewing machines, rolling pins, irons and China Tea sets. And of course, throughout the museum, there is what I consider to be an infestation of dolls of every shape, size and description. In addition to the above-mentioned items, you can also enjoy looking as other vintage toys such as spinning tops, windup toys, and of course there is no limit to the Disney paraphernalia. So whether you're in your first or second childhood, come in and enjoy the toys. Kevin McSheffrey is the secretary for the McDougall Mill Museum board of directors.

OPINION

From the Renfrew County District School Board

SUSAN HUMPHRIES Director Pino Buffone acknowledged the students and staff at Renfrew Collegiate Institute for once again organizing a very successful Relay for Life in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. This is an excellent example of the strong connection our students have with our community- thanks to all for their support. The Child Poverty Action Network (CPAN) is hosting an arts and culture based extracurricular musical expression program for youth ages 12-18. The program creates a safe environment where students grow, express themselves, build new friendships and develop new skills through a "pay it forward" programfor every hour of teaching they receive, the youth are asked to give back to their community through volunteerism. The program is being relaunched through co-ordinator Danielle Rae who is reaching out to schools for their interest and involvement. Both Queen Elizabeth Public School and Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI/RCIS) participated in wave one of the Broadband Modernization Program announced by the Ministry of Education last year. ity to all Ontario students and educators. Wave two, which will include the rest of our schools, is scheduled to be completed by August 2018.

Student trustees update: Congratulations to Sean McCloskey from Madawaska Valley high school for being elected as vice-president of the public board council at a recent Ontario Student Trustee's Association (OSTA) annual general meeting. Sean will be working closely with the executive of the OSTA, the Ministry of Education and the Ontario Public School Boards Association (OPSBA). Nic Edge, from Arnprior District High School, volunteered at the Student Empowerment Day at the We Global Learning Centre in Toronto. He led a team of student leaders through workshops and activities during the event. At the student senate elections held at the end of April, a new student trustee was elected to replace Nic, who will have completed his two-year term and will be heading to university in the fall. Congratulations to Sam Abbott from Valour high school- we are looking forward to meeting and working with him for the next two years.

Vice-principal changes There will be a change of the viceprincipal assignment at RCI in the fall. Amy Dahm moves to a principal position at Walter Zadow Public School in Arnprior and we will welcome Samantha Noack as VP at RCI. Amy has been at RCI/RCIS for a number of years and will be missed. We wish her all the best at Walter Zadow. Students and staff at RCI have been working hard at demonstrating their creativity and skills through social media- everything from daily podcasts and highlighting art work and past graduates to challenges with teachers. I have even learned the meaning of some new words by watching one of their videos, including an interview with principal Terry Hughes suggesting that he was "Gucci"! Keep up the great work!

Upcoming graduations and celebrations June is a busy month at all of our schools with teachers wrapping up courses, students preparing for exams and finally graduations and celebrations! I look forward to seeing many students, teachers, parents and friends at the upcoming graduations. – Susan Humphries is the Renfrew County District School Board trustee for Renfrew, Horton and Greater Madawaska

She sings, she MC's, you hear her voice everywhere, all the while staying positive. Now she wants to spread that positivity to the next generation. Local media personality Chris Kyte is launching "Confidence Through Kindness and Compassion; A Workshop for Kids." She asks what does confidence mean and how should that be taught to children. "I'm of the belief that you gain confidence in how you treat others," said Kyte in a press release. "When you show empathy and compassion, you gain a sense of self-worth and realize that you, as an individual, have value. I believe if we are genuinely happy and find satisfaction in helping others, we embolden your own self-esteem." The workshops will use games, role-play, improv and stories to encourage kids to think outside the box, to be creative, to find their voice and take risks in a safe environment. "We will focus on teamwork, kindness and compassion as well as empathy. Kids will have a chance to express themselves while learning about courtesy and leadership as well as developing social skills," said Kyte. The first sessions is set to run from July 8 to 29 on Sundays for ages seven to 10 from 2 to 3 p.m., ages 11 to 14 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. and ages 15 to 17 from 5 to 6 p.m. at Move-ment, 133 Argyle St. S. in Renfrew. There are only 15 spots per workshop, each session is $30 each or four weeks for $100, registration is required before June 30. In August Kyte is launching Improv for Kids from Aug. 14 to 30: registration deadline is July 25. The improv sessions will run from Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 2 p.m. for youth seven to 12 years old and from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. for 13- to 17-year-olds. As well, she is also starting an improv troupe for adults on Friday nights from 7 to 8 p.m. starting on July 6. Any questions or to register: email chriskyteMC@gmail.com.

COUNTY OF RENFREW You are going to want to grab your best gal or guy and head over to the Bonnechere Manor Foundation's 2018 fundraising gala, celebrating 60 years that the home has provided quality long-term care services to countless residents from the Renfrew and area communities. The foundation is pleased to announce that the gala, quickly becoming Renfrew's premier event, will take place on Saturday, Oct. 20. Don Goulet, chair of the foundation, is excited with the '50s and '60s theme, in keeping with the manor's anniversary, noting that the event includes a welcoming signature drink reception and a four-course catered dinner by Ullrich's on Main. Goulet adds that, back by popular demand, guests will be treated to an evening of music and dancing featuring the Ottawa Valley's own Ghost Town Cryers - all for an incredible value of $125 with a tax receipt for $75. "I couldn't be more proud that the foundation is honouring the 60th anniversary of Bonnechere Manor." A small but hard-working volunteer group comprised of Sheila Kemp, Violet Rossy, Jane Valiquette, Dianne Johnston, Erin Wilson and Shelley Sheedy, along with fundraising co-ordinator Claire Ullrich, are busily working

The gala committee notes that sponsorship opportunities, including the signature drink reception, dinner, entertainment and wine are available. The committee adds that auction items are coming in every day and thanks the community for its continued generosity. Next up - ticket sales. The manor's medical director, Dr. Andrea Di Paolo, purchased the first ticket from fundraising co-ordinator Claire Ullrich. "I encourage the community to support the great work of the Bonnechere Manor Foundation, through this gala, in continuing their proud reputation of enhancing the quality of lives for the resi-

dents who call the manor home," said Di Paolo. Ullrich urges guests to get their tickets early. "Not only did we sell out last year, (but) guests who purchase their tickets before Aug. 31, 2018, will have their names entered into a draw for a chance to win two tickets to see Elton John at the Scotiabank Place." Goulet advises that proceeds raised will go toward the home's long-term goal of replacing all the residents' beds with a state-of-theart model - to date there are 59 more beds to be replaced, costing approximately $120,000. There are a limited number of tickets available, so to ensure you have a spot or for more information, be sure to contact Claire Ullrich at 613-432-4873.

The County of Renfrew assumes no responsibility for paint damage claims from motorists who cross wet paint lines. Facts: • Line painting is done primarily during daylight hours only. • Most County Roads and some local municipal roads are painted each year. • It takes about 2 minutes for traffic paint to dry. • Wet traffic paint on the road may splatter on your vehicle if you cross the centerline. before the paint has dried. If you encounter a line painting crew on the road: Don’t: • Pass, unless the warning signs direct you to do so. • Cross the centreline. Do: • Slow down and stay well behind the truck. • Obey the warning signs on the truck. • Be patient. • Unless otherwise directed, wait for the truck to pull over before passing. If your vehicle is splattered with paint: • Go to a car wash as soon as possible. • If the paint does not wash off, spray the affected area with WD-40 and allow it to dry for 2 hours, then rewash the vehicle. • If the paint remains, consider submitting a claim to your insurer. Celebrating Seniors in the Valley June is Seniors Month Some benefits of growing older are some side effects of aging that one may wish to avoid, people may find that the benefits of growing older outweigh the negatives. Statistics Canada reports that, in July 2015, estimates indicated that there were more persons aged 65 years and older in Canada than children aged 0 to 14 years for the first time in the country’s history. Nearly one in six Canadians (16.1%) was at least 65 years old. With so many people living longer, it’s time to celebrate the perks of getting older rather than the drawbacks. Here are some great benefits to growing old. · Higher self-esteem: The insecurities of youth give way as one ages, and older people have less negativity and higher self-esteem. A University of Basel study of people ranging in ages from 18 to 89 found that regardless of demographic and social status, the older one gets the higherself-esteem climbs. Qualities like self-control and altruism can contribute to happiness. • Reasoning and problem-solving skills: Brain scans reveal that older adults are more likely to use both hemispheres of their brans simultaneously - something called bilateralization. This can sharpen reasoning skills. For example, in a University of Illinois study, older air traffic controllers excelled at their cognitively taxing jobs, despite some losses in short-term memory and visual spatial processing. Older controllers proved to be experts at navigating, juggling multiple aircrafts simultaneously and avoiding collisions.

Seniors becoming more tech-savvy Technology is the future, and digital communication has opened many doors for people around the world. Although younger generations have grown up with technology at their fingers, Baby Boomers and older adults did not. But in spite of that, studies show that growing numbers of seniors are open to the idea of technology and even seeking ways to further their use and knowledge.

Pew also says that, although seniors consistently have lower rates of technology adoption than the general public, four in 10 seniors now own smartphones, which is more than double the amount that did in 2013. Seniors in Australia are especially tech savvy, as Deloitte’s mobile consumer survey found 78 percent of Australian seniors aged 65 to 75 own a smartphone, up from 69 percent in 2016. While stereotypes have long painted seniors as technologically inept, seniors are actually more socially and digitally engaged than ever before. Seniors use technology in many different ways. Some use mobile apps to manage medications and doctor’s appointments and monitor their fitness regimens.

differentiate their needs from wants and focus on more important goals. This can alleviate worry over things that are beyond one’s control. Seniors may realize how picture, thereby feeling less stress about what others think of them.

per side. When cooked, set on a wire rack to cool. In a small bowl, combine the chevre, salt, pepper, sun-dried tomatoes, oil and thyme. Using a small spatula, spread the cheese mixture thinly over one side of the zucchini. Lightly roll the zucchini, and place seam side down on a small, parchment-lined baking sheet. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Place baking sheet on top rack of the grill for 15 minutes. Remove to a platter and serve.

Some families employ 24/7 alert systems or smarthome technology to keep seniors comfortable and safe at home for as long as possible. Noninvasive, “smart” technology can analyze factors such as whether or not doors are left open, if there has been movement in a home, or whether appliances/lights are on or off. This represents a great way for families to stay informed and provide assistance even if they are not nearby.

Technology is no longer just for teenagers or active workers. Seniors are increasingly embracing technology and becoming a fast-growing demographic for tech usage. LP183768

ROXANNE NOLAN Renfrew Victoria Hospital The Renfrew Victoria Hospital and the Grade 6 classes from Our Lady of Fatima School have shared experiences with an Adopt A Grandparent program for over 25 years. The purpose of this Intergenerational program is to foster a greater understanding and compassion between the generations; to develop in the students a respect for and appreciation of elderly persons; to provide the children with an opportunity to learn from the elderly and to foster a caring relationship; to provide the children with an opportunity to learn to care for others in the community and to enrich the life of the elderly patients through the children's contact and caring. Our older citizens have a great deal of life experience skills, understanding and love to share. Since October of 2017, the current participants of this Adopt A Grandparent program have been meeting. Every two weeks, six students from the school walked over to Renfrew Victoria Hospital to take part in baking, Bingo, horse racing, Jeopardy, Guesstures, parties and other games. They did a fabulous job of participating in the activities and interacting with the patients.

On Wednesday May 16, a barbecue was held at the hospital as a way to mark the end of the program and to thank both the students and the patients for their participation in this successful program. When asked what they liked best about the program, all participants unanimously agreed that it was the opportunity to be around the patients. Allison Tracey noted that she liked

"hanging out with the patients." Her grandmother had passed away the previous year and so "it was nice to be around the elderly and doing the different games and activities" with them. Mackenzie Todd noted "that it was a learning experience to see what the patients had to deal with." The patients and the students greatly enjoyed their time spent together.

HORTON EUCHRE WINNERS

OPINION

Pleasant drive doesn't take long to turn into chaos Quick U-turn back home said it all for Father, columnist writes

MARY COOK Column Barb Dickson/Submitted

On May 31, Horton Euchre held a potluck and handed out yearly trophies. Marcella Cybulski won the trophy for Most Points, 1123 and Gerald Adamson won the trophy for Most Lones, 40. Their names will be engraved on the larger plaques displayed at the Horton Community Centre. Euchre at the Horton Community Centre will resume euchre in the middle of September

It wasn't often we took the old Model T out for a pleasure drive. It was used for more important trips, like going into Renfrew to shop, going to church on Sunday, and hauling any number of livestock to the sale barn. It was nothing to see Father

pull out of the barn yard in the old car with a couple of sheep riding in the back seat with their heads sticking out the side windows. But that Sunday Mother thought it would be a nice change if we all went for a drive before heading home after church. The brothers weren't too happy. They were hoping to go swimming with the Thoms' boys, and Audrey had planned on having her friend Iva over. I was delighted. I got to sit in the front seat, jammed between Mother and Father, and the three boys and Audrey were packed like sardines in the back. They had to take turns sitting on the floor, which my sister had no intention of doing, since she had worn her best white dress to church, and the remains of the last sheep haul were still there. We had barely passed our lane on the way to Douglas when the trouble started. Earl, the youngest had been on the floor since we left church, and he decided he had had enough of the sheep dung, and it was time someone else changed places. As well, dust and gravel were hitting him in the face, coming up from the Northcote Side Road through the plate-sized hole in the floor that had been there since we got the car in a trade. When no one offered to change, Earl either bit Emerson on the leg, or jabbed him with his penknife, but the roars could be heard in Douglas still a few miles

and down in his mouth, and that was a sure sign he was getting pretty riled up over what was supposed to be a nice drive. Without a word coming out of his mouth, he wheeled the old car into someone's lane, pulled a Uturn, and before you could count to five, we were on our way back to the farm. We were barely stopped when the four in the back seat fell out of the car, Audrey crying that her dress was ruined, Emerson limping and saying he was pretty sure he might lose his leg, Earl heading for the pump where he put his head under the spout and let the cold well water pour over his entire body, and Everett heading for the Bonnechere River. I followed Mother into the house, and Father stayed seated in the front seat of the Model T chewing on his pipe, looking straight ahead like he was in a trance. I was pretty sure it would be a long time before we again went for a Sunday drive after church. Interested in an electronic version of Mary's books? away. Without taking her eyes off the road, Mother took her purse by the straps, and with a mighty swing, directed it into the back seat, connecting with poor Audrey who hadn't said a word since we left church. She meant to hit the two scrappers, but missed by a country mile. Emerson said he was going to bleed to death, Audrey said he didn't even have a scratch, and Everett asked Father to stop the car, because he wanted to walk back to the farm and get away from all the fighting. Mother ordered Emerson and Earl to change places, which was no easy feat. I couldn't see what was going on, because I was jammed between Mother and Father, but I heard plenty. Audrey roared that Earl had grabbed her white dress to hoist himself up and she was now covered with dirt. Earl said Emerson hit him on his head with his bible, and that that was a sin, and he was going straight to Hell. Mother took another swing with her purse, but didn't manage to connect with anyone. The roars from the back seat were getting louder and I was pretty sure I could feel the old Model T rocking from the fuss. All this time Father never said a word, which was his usual way of dealing with a family fight. I could see him starting to chew on his pipe. It was bobbing up

OPINION

BILL RAINBOTH Dragonfly General Manager We at Dragonfly Golf Links never get tired of hearing feedback about the condition of our golf course. With steady doses of sunshine mixed with warm rain, and the tireless efforts of our maintenance team, the compliments from our customers have been equally steady. Unfortunately, our Wednesday Men's League and the Thursday Ladies' League were cancelled this past week due to rain. Monday and Tuesday Men's League took place as per normal. The playing format was very challenging to our sixman teams; with three players scrambling off the back tees, two scrambling from the middle tees and one playing his own ball from the forward tees. The best two scores (out of the

l MORE

three) per hole counted for the team. Mondays' champs were from Weapons for Grass Destruction, with the X-Men finishing in the runner up position. Closest to the pin were Gord Barney on No. 5, and Dennis Riopelle on No. 7. Rays Flowers rose up to the challenge on Tuesday to post the lowest score of the week, winning A flight. Beatty Pilgrim Construction assembled a fantastic round of their own to win B Flight. Closest to the pin were Justin Knight-Locke on No. 5, and Dan Hisko on No. 7. Our second Dragonfly Member Fun Day was on Sunday, June 10. This event is for men and women members of the club, where they can test their skills in a fun, yet competitive tournament environment. Notable scores from the men's side were from Justin Rio-

pelle with a stellar round of 68 (four under par), and from Chad Thompson and Jesse Riopelle, who also had great scores of 73 and 74 respectively. Congrats to Pam McFarlane, who had the best round of her life and was "low score" in the ladies' division for the day. Dragonfly Golf Links was proud to have hosted the Bonnecherre Manor Staff Association Golf Night on Friday, June 15. Thanks to Lisa Valliquette for her hard work pulling it all together. We also had the pleasure of hosting the gang from the Haley Athletic Association (Magellan Aerospace) on Saturday, June 16. Colleen Wall is the "cog that moves the wheel" when it comes to getting things done for this event. Thanks to both of you for trusting Dragonfly with your special day. Until next week, happy golfing!
