On June 21 the Renfrew Fire Department battled a structure fire at 173 Bank St. South, which caused approximately $250,000 in damages, no one was injured but the family pet died in the blaze.
Family pet perishes in Bank Street house fire TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com A family dog is dead following a house fire at 173 Bank St. S. in Renfrew, which began around noon on Thursday, June 21. Neighbour James Deacon, who lives across the street, called 911. "I was coming home from work and as I got out of my truck I

looked over and smoke was coming out of the front screen door," Deacon said. "As soon as I called 911, the window burst with flames." Firefighters arrived on scene less than three minutes after the call came in, and the fire was contained about five minutes later, according to Capt. Peter Whalen. The fire started on the main level
of the dwelling and was contained to the left side, Whalen said, adding that the building suffered "extensive smoke damage." Acting fire Chief Tim Hill told the Renfrew Mercury that no humans were home at the time, however firefighters did find a dog. Whalen later confirmed that the dog perished in the fire. "Acting fire Chief Tim Hill did
an excellent job on scene," Whalen said. At this time the Renfrew Fire Department is still investigating and the cause of the fire is unknown. The fire caused approximately $250,000 in damage. A GoFundMe Page has also been set up to help the home owner: https://www.gofundme.com/ usgpz3-house-fire-victims

Keep up to date on road changes via town website TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com The reconstruction of Highway 60/Downtown Renfrew is in full swing, right in time for summer. “The project is moving along … it is going well and from Bridge to Munroe is taking shape,” said Mike Asselin, director of development and works for Renfrew. "BEI had experienced some issues with the main sewer relining and they have modified their approach to it. The future road closures will help accelerate and bring the project back on to schedule." The town announced the following road changes one June 21:
• Bridge Street will reopen to traffic on Friday, June 29. • Raglan Street North will reopen to traffic on Friday, June 29. • Raglan Street South to Munroe Avenue to Patrick Avenue: will be open to local traffic from June 26 to June 29 and July 3 to July 27. • Detours will be in effect via Patrick Avenue and Lochiel Street North/South. All businesses remain open as well. According to a release from BEI starting June 26 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. they will be implementing traffic controls with off duty police officers and flag persons starting at Hall Avenue/Raglan Street intersection moving north with the intent of reaching Renfrew West/Raglan intersection by the end of the day. This is for the purpose of cleaning and scoping sanitary sewers.

Staff also remind residents they have agreements in place with St. Francis Xavier Church, St. Paul's Anglican Church and the Renfrew Curling Rink from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. for people shopping or working downtown. The downtown reconstruction will see Raglan Street South (Highway 60) repaired and 10 additional short connecting streets that connect to Raglan Street South from Plaunt Street to Argyle Street at a cost of $10,666,400 and also includes a $3 million Ministry of Transportation Connecting Link grant. The Town of Renfrew has set up large place cards/posters in the front lobby of town hall with the construction schedule and more information can be found on the town website: www.renfrew.ca/downtown. If you have any questions call the Town of Renfrew department of development and works at 613-432-8166.
Water back to normal TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com On June 20 at 6 p.m. the Town of Renfrew and the Renfrew County District Health Unit rescinded the precautionary boil water advisory that was issued on June 18 at 4:30 p.m. "The town was very fortunate to be able to maintain service as the system leak could have jeopardized the entire system," said Mike Asselin, director of development and works for Renfrew. According to a press release from the town: "Mandatory water testing has confirmed no indication of contaminants and that the Town of Renfrew drinking water system remains safe for use and consumption." According to Asselin, the town is currently looking into repairing the water main break under Smith's Creek and are speaking with various ministry officials on a timeline to fix it. "We are not hearing any issues now and the system is back to normal," said Asselin.
"During the event some people had brown water and they had to run it to have it cleared but we haven't heard of any issues." When the water ban was lifted the town delivered notices to all affected businesses north of the Bonnechere River including restaurants, the hospital and other health care facilities.

Township council in conflict with landowners
DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com Residents are spending tens of thousands of dollars to defend against what they say is a hostile and dismissive council in Greater Madawaska. Complaints to Metroland Media revolve around land issues, two of the most egregious involving the Inglis family in the township's remote north-east and Lee Chapman in the village of Calabogie. The former has sunk about $20,000 and possibly much more to come over a severance dispute. The latter could lose a building - the original fire hall - and almost $10,000 recently invested in it. Both say council has entered disagreements heavy-handedly and with no willingness to consider solutions. Lawyers on all sides and provincial governing bodies are now involved. "It's not very neighbour-
ly; they don't care," said Paula Inglis, about how her family has been treated by the municipality. "I believe it's an abuse of power within council." Inglis is employed at Metroland Media. Along Inglis Road where it intersects with Grant Road and Long Point Way (which leads to Hurd's Lake) is where Inglis wants to build a home for herself. Her father, Ken, lives nearby on the family homestead; they are seven generations in the area. When the Inglises brought the plan to build on 4.7 acres of the 190 they own, county planner Bruce Howarth said everything was fine except for some concern of the threeway intersection. The family is well aware of the road's dangers. Paula's brother was killed along that road - which the family had given to the township - many years ago. They figured making it a three-way stop would do

the costs began to escalate. Greater Madawaska doesn't pay to survey roads, so it wanted the In-
glises to survey the entire area at a cost of $25,000. The township also wants 1.1 of the 4.7 acres. The

township has stated that it doesn't intend to widen the road, which is the only reason for doing a survey. "They don't have many surveys of these roads, so they can ask the same of anybody in the township who wants to sever their land," Inglis said. The family paid a variety of fees which are set to expire after one year. To not lose that investment, they've had to challenge the municipality at the Ontario Municipal Board. At the May 15 hearing, Inglis said the township agreed to lift the survey requirement, then realized it doesn't have the power to overturn its own decision. The OMB has not issued a final conclusion. Meanwhile, Inglis rents a residence next to the property she wants to build on. That cost rises the longer the case drags on.

TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com Four days after a swimmer first went missing, the search continues. On June 26 Const. Shawn Peever with the Upper Ottawa Valley Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment confirmed officials were still looking for a 20-year-old man from Petawawa who went missing after getting caught in a section of rapids on the Ottawa River adjacent to Grants Settlement Road. "There's nothing yet," said
Peever on Tuesday morning just before 10 a.m. "The OPP's Underwater Search and Recovery Unit is back on scene today and is still searching." The search started on June 22 at 8:30 p.m. when OPP were dispatched to an area of rapids on the Ottawa River in Whitewater Region Township after a male swimming failed to return to shore. The missing man had entered the water earlier that night with a second man, also from Petawawa. Both men were caught in the rapids,
however the second male was eventually able to make his way to shore to call for help when the other man did not return. The search has been extensive and has included help from Whitewater Region Fire Department, Garrison Petawawa Fire Department and Renfrew County Paramedics, whose members all responded and assisted in the initial search by local professionals in the whitewater rafting community. "There was a ground search yesterday (Monday)
and I am not sure if it's continuing today," said Peever. "There has been a lot of support from the professional whitewater community." The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre was notified and two helicopters, one from Garrison Petawawa and one from CFB Trenton, with Forward-Looking Infrared technology were deployed to the area to assist in the search at the time but they were unable to find the man. On Monday, the OPP helicopter was called in as well to assist with the search.

"There are a lot of expenses they are not aware of," she said, adding they live in a low-service area where the township doesn't provide fire protection. "It's extremely frustrating." After several attempts to reach Mayor Glenda McKay, she agreed to schedule an interview; then could not be reached again. Coun. Brian Hunt said asking for a road survey and taking some land, what is known as a "required setback," is normal in severance cases. "This is not at all unusual," Hunt said, adding that the Inglises should have come to a council meeting to plead their case near the beginning of the process. Inglis said most municipalities wouldn't have handled their case this way. So they had no reason - and were not encouraged - to attend a council meeting. "Like I said, not very neighbourly," she said. In the former fire-hall case, Hunt said Chapman's spouse was invited numerous times to speak before council. They didn't. Hunt won't speak further on the topic, saying it is now "a legal matter." The fire hall sits on Chapman's property next to the community centre entrance. A former owner bequeathed it to the township back in the mid-1960s. Successive owners of the property going back decades have treated it as their own shed. Chapman has done the same, putting money into it just recently. However, the township recently sent a letter telling him that it belongs to the municipality and the electricity was cut. He was told a private property sign will be erected. He put up his own sign first. "This is just heavy-handed politics, is what it is," Chapman said. "I have no clue what is going on. No one will tell me what is going on. This has become a matter of principle now." He has the provincial integrity commissioner investigating. Chapman suspects the township deems the shed unsightly and wants it removed from the area near the community centre. But because the ownership isn't clear, the township doesn't know how to proceed, he said. "It's become a fly in the ointment," Chapman said. "For my part, it's hard to fight an enemy when you don't know what the fight is about." McKay could not be reached for comment on the issue. The two cases don't come as a surprise to Dwight Badham, who along with several township residents had their own conflict with council last year. "They are completely unaccountable," Badham said. "They launch these letters, give deadlines, but the mayor and council won't discuss them." Badham said, in relation to his case, the issue was mostly resolved after the group spoke before council, but not entirely.

Renfrew welcomes new development projects TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com Two developers are planning to invest approximately $3 million in Renfrew's downtown in the coming years. On June 20 more than 50 people heard the plans for the changes set to happen at the Post Office building (249 Raglan St. S.) and the old Bargain Shop (278 Raglan St.) at a public meeting held upstairs at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre. Renfrew Mayor Don Eady was very excited to hear the plans for the two new developments. "It's going to establish some anchor stores for the town and give the downtown some stability," said Eady, who calls the downtown the heart beat of the community. "It feels like we are starting again (with the construction) and once we get these two buildings there will be a real chain
effect, in the next four to five years there will be a whole new downtown." Rob Thompson of Rob Thompson Hotels passionately explained his vision for turning the upstairs of the Post Office (which he says he hopes stays there forever) building into a boutique hotel. Thompson's process involves the re-establishment of heritage landmarks as lively, active and culturally significant destinations, made ready for the next 100 years. "We only buy landmarks and we don't just slap lipstick on them we take them to their bones and honour the outside," said Thompson, who has come to understand how important the building is to the people of the area. "We very much think of it as your building, it's the community's building." Thompson's preliminary designs show nine suites on the upper levels
of the building with the possibility of roof top hot tubs and will target leisure, corporate, "staycation" guests and more. He estimates they will invest $1.5 million into the starting with work to the roof this summer. He says it will take them six months to a year of planning and with any luck they would start the 18month build sometime next year. "My team and I will honour and continually maintain this charming heritage esthetic, while modernizing and updating the interior spaces," said Thompson. "We are privileged to be the custodians of your magnificent landmark and promise to do our absolute best." Rakan Abushaar, developer with Smart Living Properties, says he fell in love with the town and that 278 Raglan St. was an impulse buy. He is also planning to invest an estimated
$1.5 million into the building and add an elevator. Abushaar explained they are very close to submitting the building permits for the building and wanted to get some input from the community. "It's too big for just one store," said Abushaar. His plans include an interior court yard with 10 tenants with local shops and a small food court, on the second floor there will be a banquet hall that will lead out to a roof top patio/ offices and the third floor will have four to six apartments and the basement will have more commercial space. He hopes to have his building permits submitted for the project within the next couple of months. Both developers gave special credit to Coun. Arlene Jamieson, chair of the economic development committee, and she thanked them for investing in Renfrew.

Play safe this summer The news this weekend of an ongoing search for a swimmer swept away in the rapids of the Ottawa River in Whitewater Region is a stark reminder of the potential dangers of summer activities. As temperatures rise, countless Valley residents and visitors will flock to our many waterways, attractions and outdoor spaces. And while we certainly should not let the risks prevent us from enjoying what our wonderful region has to offer, it's wise to keep safety in mind to prevent summer fun from turning to tragedy. June 30-July 8 marks National Fishing Week in Canada. The Canadian Safe Boating Council (CSBC) is reminding anglers that wearing your life-jacket is even more important than wearing your lucky fishing hat. "But they do share one trait," says the CSBC. "They both have to be worn to be effective!" According to the council and the Lifesaving Society, 80 per cent of recreational boaters who drown each and every year in Canada were not wearing a life-jacket or personal flotation device (PFD). Most of these drownings occur in small, open powerboats, says the CSBC, accounting for 60 per cent of these preventable deaths. A majority of these victims were males between the ages of 19 and 35, out for a day of fishing. Many of those who don't wear their life-jackets or PFDs believe that, since they are good swimmers, having them on board and within easy reach is good enough. But a life-jacket stored under a seat or up in the bow will be of no help when the unexpected happens, like falling overboard while trying to net the catch. Many of today's anglers are delighted with the models that are designed especially to suit their needs, says the CSBC. They're rugged, allow for full freedom of movement to cast and are constructed with lots of pockets for gear. Some even come equipped with an attachment from which to hang a landing net. The council advises that when choosing a life-jacket, anglers should also check the label to make sure it is Transport Canada approved, is the correct size and fits snugly. Today, many anglers choose to wear an inflatable life-jacket because they are cool, fully adjustable and provide full arm motion. These are available in both manual and auto-inflate models, which make them extremely versatile. The law states that these must be worn to be legal, rather than just be kept in the boat. Also, they are only legal where the wearer is 16 years of age or older. For more info on boating safety, visit www.csbc.ca. General summer safety tips can be found at canadasafetycouncil.org.

• LETTERS & COMMENTARY • The politics of gasoline prices To the editor: This spring Ontarians, rural residents in particular, felt the pinch of high prices at the gas pumps. Naturally, a provincial election recently concluded where the party with the most ambitious plan for lowering gas prices, Doug Ford's Progressive Conservatives, won the plurality of the vote. Arguably however, elected politicians should not be attempting to lower gasoline prices. Like most commodities, gasoline is priced based upon supply-demand market economics. Unless someone can demonstrate the existence of laws or monopolies that
are intended to stifle gasoline pricing competition (like laws that purposely diminish competition in the dairy and pharmaceutical industries), it stands to reason that gasoline is fairly priced at the most affordable level allowing the least amount of wasteful consumption of limited resources. That argument is of course cold comfort to those who are barely or unable to afford transportation. But for those in dire need, sound public policy will focus on boosting their overall incomes, not on arbitrarily lowering the prices of some of their needed commodities (as per notorious central-planning economics). Gasoline is subject to special taxation, but with every tax the question is,

Lesson learned To the editor: Our mailbox was destroyed a short time ago. I contacted the OPP. In a short time, Brenda Beauchamp, youth justice worker for the Phoenix Centre, called to ask
what we wanted, and I said an apology, to have the mailbox replaced and for each involved do 200 community service hours. Last week two wellspoken, well-dressed gentlemen came to our door and apologized. They asked what we wanted and we said a new mailbox and 200 community service hours. They took a look at our bashed-in mailbox, went to Renfrew for an exact replacement and delivered it. They would have replaced it, but my husband said he wanted to install it. We thanked the gentlemen and said we hoped that they had learned a lesson, and they said they did. Mae Craig River Road, Renfrew

which Ontarians are getting the money from the tax? Perhaps MPP John Yakabuski was onto something when he suggested that more gas tax money should go to rural Ontario. But responsible policy-makers will avoid the cheap retail politics of attempting to lower gasoline prices lower for everyone, as the wealthiest Ontarian motorists need no such crude gift. New washrooms open at Ma-Te-Way TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com Two new washroom rooms at Ma-Te-Way Activity Park are officially set to open just in time for Canada Day. ty investment in the town to continue to enhance the services we already have," said Renfrew Coun. Tom Sidney, chair of the recreation committee on the partnerships. The two unisex washrooms/change rooms will be open to the public as of 4 p.m. on July 1. "It is life coaching with horses." The grand opening is set to take place on June 30 from noon to 2 p.m. There will be raffles/prizes at 981 Humphries Rd. (corner of Castleford/Humphries). Animals that are hunted such as snowshoe hares, ducks and songbirds tend to have their eyes placed on the sides of their head to provide a wider view of the world around them. Mallards and hares can see a full 360 degrees without moving their head; they literally have eyes on the back of their heads! American bitterns cannot see behind them for their eyes are placed near their beak so that when they point their heads straight up to avoid detection, allowing their breast streaks to blend into the cattails around them, they still keep their eyes on any approaching danger. Then there are animals that in addition to possessing eyes that see the world around them have other "eyes" that never see. These eyes can be on display all the time or hidden until their bearer wants them to be revealed. Known as eye-spots, their only function is one of deceit. The eyes of animals are fascinating structures. Those of hawks and eagles magnify distant objects allowing their owners to detect a meal. Contrary to popular belief, they only magnify two to three times what we would see. In addition to making objects larger, they provide exceedingly sharp vision due to millions of light receptor cells (cones) packed into the retina. Like hawk eyes, owls eyes are large to gather light. Unlike those of their diurnal counterparts, however, they are packed with rods, receptor cells that are extremely sensitive to the low levels of light sent from the moon and stars. While not as sharp as that of a hawk, an owl's vision is much more functional in the dark of night. Insect eyes are very different from those of birds. They own compound eyes, which means that each apparent eye is composed of hundreds, even thousands of individual components. Compound eyes do not make hundreds of individual pictures of an item (as does a bank of televisions all on the same station in a large box store) but provide one consolidated image. Eye placement also var-
dark eyes that stare at you intently from the top of their pronotum (the platelike structure located just behind their head). These eyespots make the beetle look like a much larger animal, thereby deterring some predators from considering it a meal. Some moths have eyespots on their hindwings, which are hidden under the first set of wings when the moth resting. When the upperwings open, large "eyes" suddenly appear, startling the attacker and giving the moth precious seconds to vanish behind a tree or into vegetation. For that reason these eye-spots are known as "startle patterns." Recently I came across an io moth, a stunning yellow moth whose caterpillar bears poison spines, resting on a tree trunk. When its wings opened, two gigantic, gorgeous blue eyes suddenly appeared. If I'd been a bird looking forward to an easy meal, I likely would have nearly jumped out of my feathers! HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

congratulations graduates of 2018!
horoscopes ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20
CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22
LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23
CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20
Opportunity is knocking, Aries. You must tune in and listen to it this week. Stay passionate in your endeavors, but exercise a little cautioun as well.
Cancer, you are heading in the right direction, but you may have to fine-tune the destination this week. Your intended romantic target may not be the perfect fit.
People often see you as even-keeled, Libra. But tempers may flare this week if you don’t get your way. Others should watch when you’re fired up.
Capricorn, your energy is all over the map, so it may be best to schedule any major meetings or presentations for another time when you are more up to the task.
TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21
LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23
SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22
Planning and project management seemingly takes over your life, Leo. Just when you think there is no time for fun, an exciting opportunity falls in your lap.
Scorpio, cater your plan and speech to the audience receiving it. You can gain more support if your message is well-received. Figure out new ways to communicate.
AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18
VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22
SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21
Virgo, your creative muse has come calling and you can’t resist her siren’s song. Dabble in any artistic or craftsy project you can get your hands on in the next few days.
You do not have an argumentative nature, Sagittarius. So when you’re bothered, it is probably for a good reason. Don’t come out ready for a fight; instead, focus on mediating.
Taurus, honesty may be the best policy, but you may have to temper how much information you reveal at one time. Be a little stingy around sensitive people.
GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, this week may be off to a bumpy start, but you are perfectly capable of turning things around in a hurry. Just don’t race too far ahead without a plan.
Aquarius, it may seem like you’re feeling extreme highs or lows. Soon things will settle down. Enjoy some well-deserved escapism for the time being.
PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 This week you will have the ideal blend of patience and passion, which has people lining up to be on your team, Pisces.

Jordan Dubeau is rocking along and success is sure to follow. The Renfrew based alternative folk/rock musician is preparing to launch his first solo EP with five original songs on July 7 at Batstone's Northern Ramble in downtown Renfrew from 6 to 9 p.m., tickets cost $10 each. "We had an absolute blast making this album. The entire process was so much fun and I am excited to share these songs with a night of music with my friends," said Dubeau via email. "I am very excited to be preforming these songs with a full band in one of my favourite music venues." Also performing that night are: Mister and His Sister and Nic & I. Dubeau spent four days last summer with musician/producer Collin Carnegie in Toronto. "The album was recorded in Toronto down a side street off the beaten path inside the back of a tractor trailer which has been converted into a recording studio," said Dubeau in an email interview. The pair met after Dubeau played a show last winter with Mister and His Sister (with his sister Kristy Gutoskie) when they were supporting his band Midnight Vesta. Celebrate the Valley's rivers this summer
Over the last six years, the Bonnechere River Watershed Project and the Ottawa River Institute have partnered with businesses, other organizations and municipalities to provide over 1000 paddler trips on local waterways to residents and visitors through the Celebrate Our Rivers paddle series. The 2018 series has already begun and there are more opportunities to dip your paddle and explore the beauty of our local freshwater rivers over the next few months. Some events require advance registration to help with logistics, while others do not. The Bonnechere River Watershed Project (BRWP) is also characterizing water quality on the paddles using the Water Rangers Guardians test kit so there's an opportunity to learn about how to partner on a citizen science program for Renfrew County. The next event is July 4 at 6 p.m. on the Bonnechere River, putting in at the Renfrew boat launch for an evening paddle on the quiet stretch. Following that, on July 8 at 9:30 a.m. join a leisurely paddle on the Muskrat River, putting in at the Meath Hill boat launch. The following week, on July 15 at 9:30 a.m., join us for a tour of the Snake River, putting in at the Snake River Line, 500 metre South East of Stoqua Creek Road. The fourth of the July paddles is scheduled for July 21 at 1:30 p.m. when the famous Eganville to Fourth Chute Paddle and Fiddle takes place. Live music accompanies the paddlers on the route and is followed by a barbecue and local live entertainment at the Bonnechere Caves. The last July paddle is on

Dragonfly foursome raises $1,000 for Hospice Renfrew Longest Day of Golf It was another busy week at Dragonfly. It was busy because we hosted 68 people from Bonnechere Manor on the same night, and then 84 people from Haley Industries the next morning. Factor in a beautiful week of weather and an amazing golf course and there you go - busy! Here are the results from the Friday Ladies' Stroke Play League: Tying in third place were Therese Williams and Tamara Adams. The runner up was Mary Lynn O'Brien, and the most impressive round of the day came from first place finisher Kathy Hamilton. Monday Men's League was the only day of the week that was threatened by wet weather. Renfrew Pizzaria ate up the field, including Team Old Timers who finished in the runner - up position, almost five strokes back. Closest to the pin were Adrian Moyes on No. 13 and Pat Kelly on No. 18. In Tuesday's action it was the Tragically Chipped who rocked A flight, and for the second week in a row it was Beatty Pilgrim Construction who nailed down victory in B flight. Jamie Ferguson was closest to the pin on No. 13, and Darren Topping was closest on No. 18. Home Health and Medical Supplies continued their reign of A flight on Wednesday night, and Deslaurier Custom Cabinets were victorious in B flight. Closest to the pin winners were Ryan Zohr on No. 13, and Dwight Crozier on No. 18. Thursday Ladies' League concluded our week on June 21, summer solstice. Closest to the pin winners were Christina MacKinnon, Christie Markie, Gail Keyes and Crystal Cobus. Team We-BeClubbin' was the life of the party winning A flight. Par Tee of Fore 'B'lew away B flight, and Closest to Pinned were the C flight champs. Also on this longest day of the year, Dragonfly entered a foursome of dedicated golfers into what we hope will be an annual event called the Longest Day of

Ian Fabian and Garry Gourley (along with Kean Hunt and Chris O'Brien) represented Dragonfly Golf Links in Hospice Renfrew's Longest day of Golf fundraiser on June 21. The foursome raised close to $1,000 on Thursday and golf 100 holes. Golf. Garry Gourley, Chris O'Brien, Kean Hunt and Ian Fabian were charged with the task of playing as many holes of golf as possible. The end goal was to raise money for Hospice Renfrew. Sponsors of these golfers could either pledge a certain amount per hole, or they could donate a flat fee to the cause. Garry, Chris, Kean and Ian played
an astounding 100 holes of golf before day's end. Dragonfly is proud of these guys, and the fact that they raised almost a $1,000 for such a great cause is just one reason why! Until next week. Happy golfing! – Submitted by Bill Rainboth, Dragonfly Golf Links, general manager

In Memory of Linda Cross 1946-2018 I love you, Mom, with all my heart. I miss you so much and I am proud that you were my mom. You were a strong woman to go through all the ups and downs in your life and you are the woman I want to become. You have conquered a liver and kidney transplant; you had the biggest liver for your height (17 pounds). You had a second kidney transplant and your loving husband (my Dad) was a match, so you will always have a piece of him with you. Diabetes, German measles, eye surgery, etc. You have lost so much with the passing of your parents and siblings, but you saw your children grow up and become amazing people. You had the pleasure of experiencing all their happiness and sorrows. You were with them through all their relationships, you even saw one get married twice and you had three beautiful grandchildren. You always told me that I could do anything if I put my mind to it. All I really want to tell you, Mom, is that you will be sadly missed by your husband, Harris Cross Sr, your children, Melinda Welch and Harris Cross Jr., your grandchildren Dylan & Damien Mee, Leon Cross and family and friends. We will hold you dearly in our hearts and carry you with us to see your grandchildren graduate high school, go to college, get married and have babies of their own. You will always live in our memories and hearts forever. Love your loving daughter, Melinda.

As far as I was concerned, it was the most hateful job on the entire farm! Mother's garden was flourishing this time of year, and that included her row-onrow of potatoes. They were covered with blossoms, and that meant they were also covered with potato bugs, which I loathed with a passion! Because, all of us had the job of getting rid of them. There was no easy way of doing it. Each of us carried a little tin can of coal oil, and we went up and down the rows of potatoes and pinched off the bugs, and put them into the coal oil where they soon were floating on their backs dead as doornails. I wanted to wear the only pair of white gloves I owned, and they were only put on my hands for church, and I knew there wasn't a chance in the world Mother would let me get away with wearing them to pick off the bugs, and so like everyone else, I had to use my bare hands. Mother tried to take some of
sieve over a pail, he emptied each can. That was good coal oil, and it wasn't to be wasted. The sieve full of dead or dying potato bugs was taken behind the silo and buried, and hopefully that was the end of the job for another year. But sometimes, if the weather was hot and everything else fell into place, there would be another batch of potato bugs, and the whole job would have to be done over again. I could never understand why we had to bother with getting rid of them in the first place. The plants were high, the potatoes were deep in the ground, and the bugs were nowhere near them. So why did we have to bother with killing them? When I asked my sister Audrey, she had no explanation either. It was just one of the prices we had to pay to have a cellar full of potatoes to tide us over the long winters ahead. It wasn't a job that could be finished quickly either. It sometimes took the better part of the day. When it was done to Father's satisfaction, we soaked our hands in the wash basin of hot soapy water, which Mother had to change often, before we could rid our hands of the smell of coal oil. When Mother got out the old homemade ice cream maker, sadly none of us had much stomach for what was ahead. Interested in an electronic version of Mary's books? the pain out of the job by promising we could make ice cream when we were finished, and have a sort of picnic in the grape arbour. But the thought of eating anything after picking off potato bugs held little appeal for any of us. Father had the little pails all lined up on the back stoop waiting for us when we finished breakfast, which was earlier than usual, since Mother said it was best we start before the real heat of the day settled in. Each pail had a couple inches of coal oil in it, and the smell just about knocked me over. We all had a row to start in, and if anyone finished too quickly, Father was right there to check to make sure the job was being done right. Of course, if we missed more than the odd bug, he would make us go right back to the start of the row and begin all over again. Making the job even more hateful was our having to wear long sleeves to keep the mosquitoes from eating us alive. So as the sun rose higher and higher in the Northcote sky, whatever we had on was soon sticking to our backs like tar paper. You had to be sure you dunked the potato bug into the coal oil, because if you didn't, it simply crawled out of the can and went to another plant. So it wasn't long until our fingers were covered with coal oil, which I was sure was doing us bodily harm. Mother assured me a good soaking in warm soapy water when we were finished was all that was needed to get rid of both the coal oil and the smell. When we had completed the hateful job, Father gathered up all the little cans and took them into the drive shed, and with a
