Renfrew, Arnprior MPP named to provincial cabinet TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
John Yakabuski has been named the new Minister of Transportation for Ontario. The Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) was sworn into the cabinet position on June 29 in Toronto. Yakabuski spoke with Metroland Media Friday night as he was making his way back to the riding for the Canada Day long weekend. Yakabuski was both honoured and pleased with the new appointment. "It's an important ministry that touches everyone in Ontario," said Yakabuski who had already had meetings with the new department on Friday afternoon. He says he has been very proud to represent the riding over the last 15 years and said he is proud of the new role as it is for his constituents as well. "Now for us to achieve government, and having been chosen for a very special honour, I will never lose focus for the people at home. I have taken on some additional responsibilities and I will carry them out as best as possible." During the election campaign the Ontario Provincial Conservative Party committed to put the twinning of Highway 17 into
the five-year plan. The next portion of twinning is expected to go from Scheel Drive in McNab/Braeside to the Town of Renfrew. Yakabuski has worked for the last number of years on the highway expansion project. He will soon receive briefings on every issue across Ontario and then on to a major local issue. "It's a matter to me greatly at home and we will follow through with the (twinning) of Hwy 417 in our very first five-year plan," affirmed Yakabuski. A number of other local MPPs have received cabinet positions as well, including: Steve Clark - Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Merrilee Fullerton - Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities and Lisa MacLeod - Minister of Children, Community and Social Services and Minister Responsible for Women's Issues. "Eastern Ontario is very well represented," said Yakabuski. He confirmed the government is set to go back in early July, with the first order of business to elect a speaker on July 9, the speech from the throne on July 10. "Follow that we will pass legislature for the priorities for the people of Ontario, that will take a few weeks and then we will recess until September."
POLICE AND FIRE
Firefighters face sweltering conditions at barn fire SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com It was the hottest day the chief has ever had on the job. Admaston/Bromley fire Chief Kevin VanWoezik was among almost 30 firefighters who responded to a barn fire at Jim Lynch's property on Stone Road on Monday, July 2. "Around 8:45 a.m. we arrived to find two fully involved structures - two barns," said VanWoezik. The two barns were lost in the blaze but firefighters hard work saved adjacent buildings and the nearby house from burning. It was a tough job in the hot and humid conditions. "Under those conditions, they did a tremendous job to save other buildings," said VanWoezik. "In all my years of firefighting I've never
tackled one with this kind of heat." The sweltering weather coupled with heat from the burning large wooden structures made for dire conditions. "We had firefighters succumbing to the heat and immediately called for paramedics who arrived with two ambulances and four people to look after the guys," said the chief. "They kept everybody healthy and did an amazing job." It took a large group to work the scene, with members from both Horton and Whitewater Region departments on hand to help. "At one point we counted 28 firefighters; 21 of our own," said VanWoezik. It is suspected the cause is electrical in nature. "Our deputy chief was on scene first," said the
chief. "He happened to be driving by, and when he arrived he noticed at the smaller barn, near an area where there was an electrical panel, a lot of fire and a lot of sparking." It was an all out attack when firefighters arrived. "We went to a defensive battle right away, there was no way we could save the barns that were on fire," said VanWoezik. The heat from the fire cracked some house windows and there was some burn on the outside of the nearby outbuildings but they were saved, he added. There were no animals in any of the structures. There was a lot of equipment in the barns and the full loss is still being assessed but the chief said they're figuring somewhere in the neighbourhood of $300,000 for a damage estimate.

Jamieson hopes it will attract other festivals. "We needed to do this one first to show we are here," said Jamieson. When asked if they thought the community has embraced the festival they were both in agreement: Absolutely. "People are excited to see what it's going to be like," said Jamieson. "The fact that Renfrew is having its first festival and we have done so much work I want to see a lot of people here. We want the local people here, there will be vendors, the splash pad and non-stop music." The shows start on July 12

The town is rolling out the welcome mat for its first-ever music festival. Renfrew's Bluegrass Festival will hit the stage at the Ma-TeWay Activity Centre from July 12 to 15 bringing to town award-winning bands with loyal followers. Organizers are also hoping locals come out to see everything the town has done to prepare for this major festival. There will be 15 acres of camping, with hundreds of trailers expected, 24 hour security/fire service/first aid, granular Grade A gravel roads, an RV water station, golf cart shuttles in the park, large covered area for sun shelter for listening to the music, covered beer tent, horse drawn wagon to and from the downtown and more. The town has recently finished the construction of a granular A gravel road at the site and they are expecting to accommodate hundreds of trailers who will camp for the duration of the event, some are expected to roll in on July 8. "They have a brand new fresh road, so they don't have to worry about bringing their trailers in," said Renfrew Coun. Arlene Jamieson, who is also chair of the economic development committee. "The road is also higher to let any water drain out as well." "Tell us what we did wrong and we will improve it for next year," added Coun. Mike Coulas, who is also on the Bluegrass committee. "There was so much work for the first year, we will sit down immediately after and fix things for the future." This is the first ever festival the town has organized and for Jamieson it is all about economic development. "The whole point was to draw out of towners," said Jamieson. "Now we need the local people to welcome them and let them know it is a great place." Coulas is pleased with the support from town staff and the current council to host the new festival. "It will go on for many years, hence the investment," said Coulas reference things like the new road. The cost of the current investment is still being tallied but in April Jamieson and Coulas confirmed the town was set to invest more than $50,000 to help prepare the previously unused 15-acre field.
The festival was previously held on the Johnston Farm in Horton Township, but last year they decided it was time to bring it to a close and the committee has worked with Renfrew for the new festival. "We want local people to bring their trailers and for all the locals who have supported it for the last 20 years to come out," said Coulas. The committee has worked hard over the last year to make the festival a success. "We have tried to think of everything, but we are not professionals. This is our first year and we will learn from it," said Jamieson. "We want the locals to come out and support the festival. It's great entertainment and there will be lot's to see." Some of the entertainers on the lineup include Karl Shiflett and Big Country Show from Texas on Friday and Saturday. The Dick Smith/Mike O'Reilly Band from Virginia and Canada will take the stage on Saturday and Sunday. Also performing is Ray

ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE On Friday, June 22 shortly after 5 p.m., members from the Renfrew detachment of the OPP were dispatched to a theft of gas from a gas station in Cobden. A male driving a black four-door car pumped gas into the car and left without paying. He struck a witness in the parking lot as he was attempting to flee. As police were on their way to investigate, they were notified of a serious single motor vehicle collision nearby, on Foresters Falls Road. The investigation revealed it was the same vehicle involved in the theft of gas. COUNCIL
Admaston/Bromley tax rate decreases for 2018
Town to start water main repair work TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com The Town of Renfrew has approved funding to repair a key water main after the June 18 break. On June 26, council approved a finance committee motion for the repairs for $300,000400,000 but it will be financed by a 2017 water fund surplus of $379,000. Treasurer Keray O'Reilly explained to council this is why they have a lifecycle reserve to put some money aside in case of an emergency. "This is such an emergency; this is the main 16-inch line that services the whole town," said O'Reilly. "It loops almost like a ring road ... it's the one water main that circles the entire town so when it is down it is significant." O'Reilly noted tapping into the reserve doesn't really affect the 10-year forecast for one key reason. "We didn't plan for a surplus in 2017, we ran a surplus," said O'Reilly. "This would be financing the water main replacement out of that fortunate surplus last year." O'Reilly admitted he didn't know why the pipe broke. "It was kind of surprising because that section of pipe was replaced in 1970 - it's not even 50 years old, that should last 70 years but it's like anything else ... there was no way of for seeing it." The repairs on the broken water main will start at Stewart Park, across from Smiths Creek to Opeongo Road and Bonnechere Street and must be completed between July 15 and Sept. 15 as per the Ministry of Natural Resources because of the fish habitat. Mayor Don Eady praised the work done by town staff. "I saw how the staff reacted firsthand and it was unbelievable how professional they acted and I am very proud of our staff," said Eady. "We are lucky to have them work for us, they did a bang-up job."
TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com It’s something Admaston/ Bromley Mayor Michael Donohue has not seen in his tenure. The tax rate for the township is decreasing by .83 per cent in the 2018 budget. "This is the first time since I've been on council in 2011 that the tax rate has gone down," said Donohue. "It's going down because the average assessment for homes has increased and that affords us the ability to drop the tax rate." Township clerk/treasurer Annette Gilchrist explains there will still be a slight increase for

residents because it is year two of the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) phase in. Based on an average $100,000 assessment, with the tax rate going down resident will have a $9 decrease. However, with MPAC assessment increases on the average residential home of 3.5 per cent residents are paying $30 more on $100,000 assessment. At its June 7 council meeting a municipal levy increase of 4.65 per cent or $88,781 was approved for a total levy of $1,996,781. Of that one per cent is new growth. "The township has been experiencing substantial growth over
the last four years," said Donohue. Roads will see 41.58 per cent of the budget at $1,615,089 an increase of 0.65 per cent from last year. The biggest project will be the road resurfacing at Mount St. Patrick road at a cost of $192,474 funded by the Ontario Communities Infrastructure Fund (OCIF). "We have other roads that need it but it is near the top of our asset management plan," said Donohue. There will also be work done on Kennelly Road that is being covered by the Federal Gas Tax costing $90,585. Donohue says the township
has been unsuccessful in 2017 and 2018 for an OCIF top up grant as the full re-construction will cost more than $900,000. "We need to at least get that started," said Donohue. Other roads getting some attention will be the Rice Line and Highway 132 intersection, Breen Road, Quinn Road, Sammon's Hill, Mhusk Road, English Road and McPeak. It will cost the township $402,1100 for operational expenditures or a 2.69 per cent decrease from last year. Ontario Provincial Police will cost $405,675 (increase of only $355 from last year) and $235,000 for the Douglas Fire Department.

BUSINESS
7
TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com Tracey's Dairy and Ice Cream Products have recently inked a new deal that will help them grow into the future. "We've always been in milk distribution business but we've recently partnered up with Parmalat Canada, which offers us a whole new line of products and cheeses and dairy products," said Melany Tracey, who along with her husband Mark Tracey runs the operations. "It gives us more territory, more area to cover and more possibilities." The new products include: Parmalat, Beatrice Milk, Lactantia, Astro Yogurt, Balderson Cheese, Black Diamond, Italian/French Cheeses, cheese curds and more. "They have things that we always wanted to have but didn't have access to," said Melany. "Now we have everything ... Our product list just jumped exponentially. And so now we can go and offer competitive pricing in the food service category like restaurants, hospitals and all those ar-
eas as well as to the corner stores and others." She says they were previously limited to the area they could cover but now they are set to cover a much bigger area. "Our numbers are going to double or triple in the next year in terms of number of retailers that partner with us and that is the exciting news," said Tracey. "It means more deliverers, more trucks on the road. It is an expansion, really!" They are already in the process of hiring more people in a number of different roles including delivery, receiving and manufacturing. "We have a lot of things on the go and we are going to be ramping up in almost every area," said Tracey. They currently have a core group of 35 employees in distribution and manufacturing on just under one acre of land at Centerside Dairy 80. The manufacturing facility was built in 1935 as a fluid milk production facility with an addition in 1940 to dry milk for skim milk powder during the Second World War and the Tracey family
purchased the business in 1980. Ice cream has been part of the family for decades as her fatherin-law Ken went to ice cream making school at Purity Ice Cream at a plant in Montreal before the current plant came up for sale. Melany has been working at the dairy since 1989 and confirms they are still manufacturing the famous Tracey's ice cream and private label as well. "Now we are starting to branch out with the new products and we are very excited about it." And although she admits it makes her feel old, a smile crosses her face as she recollects the many students who have worked at the dairy bar in the summer that now come back with their children. "We have been here a long time and most people have grown up eating ice cream from the dairy here," said Tracey. Currently they are only distributing the new products but they are planning to make changes to the dairy bar in the full so people can actually purchase the new products. What do all of the changes

There’s also a chance to win second prize of $2,500 or third prize of $1,500 cash. “Not only have we increased the odds of winning this year, but we are also including a travel voucher for the grand prize winner,” notes Sarah Robinson, RVH Foundation Executive Director. “Proceeds will help the Foundation to fund vital healthcare equipment that is not funded through the government so patients have access to the greatest healthcare available, close to home.”
Mike and Barb Asselin of Renfrew, last year’s winners of the RVH Foundation’s Masters lottery, stand at the end of Magnolia Lane in front of the clubhouse in Augusta, Georgia.
To purchase your Masters ticket, contact the Foundation at 613-432-4851 ext. 276, or email dillaboughp@renfrewhosp.com

You have another chance to win the trip of a lifetime while supporting our local hospital. Tickets are on sale once again for the Renfrew Victoria Hospital Foundation’s popular PGA Masters raffle for the April 2019 event. You and a guest could be going to Augusta for the final two rounds of The Masters. Last year’s winners Mike and Barb Asselin highly recommend trying your luck in the RVHF draw for these most sought-after tickets. “The experience was a once-in-a-lifetime, bucket list item that every golfer must experience, and we feel so fortunate to get entry to the most exclusive sporting ticket in the world. We met so many nice people from England, Australia, Alaska, South Korea...” report the Asselins.

ABOUT US
Long live the fourth estate Democracy requires informed citizens. Journalism has long been considered an important force in government and key to the functioning of democracy itself. Scottish philosopher, writer, essayist, translator, historian, mathematician, and teacher Thomas Carlyle, in 1841, wrote: "Burke said there were Three Estates in Parliament; but, in the Reporters' Gallery yonder, there sat a Fourth Estate more important far than they all" (On Heroes and Hero Worship). It's hard not to feel it's a profession that's under attack, on the world stage, and in the least, in peril closer to home. On June 28, four journalists and a sales associate were killed and two others injured when Jarrod Ramos allegedly opened fire inside the offices of a Maryland newspaper. Ramos, who has been charged with It's hard not to feel five counts of firstit's a profession degree murder, had a long history with the that's under newspaper that included a lawsuit and attack, on the years of harassment. world stage, and in The Capital Gazette is a community newsthe least, in peril paper, just like the one you are reading now. As closer to home. journalism continues to receive hit after hit, it is an inspiration that Gazette staff put out an edition the next day. And while the suspect's beef was with the targeted newspaper, it's a troubling incident nonetheless considering the attack followed months of verbal and online attacks on the "fake news media" from politicians, among them U.S. President Donald Trump. Journalism finds itself at a crisis point - municipalities continue to lose their local news sources, major newspapers and television stations are losing staff, and the industry scrambles to find ways of maintaining revenue and holding public trust and interest. Last week, news broke that a newspaper that's served Pembroke and the Ottawa Valley for 163 years is down to its final month of operation. Postmedia will close the long-serving daily paper with the last edition slated for July 28. The newspaper industry is being battered by digital disruption, as advertising dollars once spent in local newspapers are sucked out of the country by foreign tech giants Google and Facebook, says Unifor, the union representing some of the affected Pembroke employees. It's time we take action. News is not only critical to democracy, but to the health of communities. Let's do what we can to preserve and bolster this vital industry. The pen is still mightier than the sword.

• LETTERS & COMMENTARY • Powerful voice To the editor: A Caged Mind is a book by May Mutter. What a powerful voice speaking out for anyone living with the effects of a traumatic brain injury - a must-read for them, their family, friends, medical and therapy professionals. Our son has been living with the effects of a severe traumatic brain injury for 38 years. During this time, our family has tried to "look into" his brain to see how we could help him in his recovery. In this book, 60 participants and 40 stories take us into the minds of people living with the results of traumatic brain injury caused by concussion, leading us into better awareness and understanding of their situation.
When talking brain injury, you will hear two main descriptions - ABI and TBI: 1. Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) - is the result of a stroke, brain tumour, or other non-traumatic injury to the brain, acquired after birth. This is an injury to a focal point of the brain. Through the years, treatment and rehabilitation have been basically standardized to obtain maximum recovery possible. Depending on the point of injury, certain long-term results can usually be anticipated. 2. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) - is a brain injury acquired as a result of an accident - vehicle, sports, farm, household, or military action. Traumatic brain injury is a violent assault to many areas of the brain. Connections are damaged, tangled,

Concussion - a traumatic brain injury resulting in temporary loss of normal brain function, most often experienced in sports activities. During the past few years, more attention and research have been directed to dealing with concussion. This book is available on A Caged Mind's website. Proceeds from the sale of the book are going to the "Love Your Brain Foundation" to help the TBI community. We have ordered a copy for the Renfrew library. Bill and Beverley Mantell Renfrew

severed. Because of this confusion, the brain is no longer able to give proper directions to the body or mind. Physical and mental activities - including hearing and sight - are often impaired. Because the "memory function" occurs within the frontal lobe, which is quite vulnerable to injury from crashing in to the interior of the hard skull, most TBI survivors experience loss of memory. This is more than just forgetting what we went into the basement to get. Often lost from memory are relationships; the protocols of social interaction; people, places; identification of everyday objects, food, clothing, animals. Forgotten are life experiences, such as when there is snow on the ground, winter coats, boots and gloves are necessary. Or not to place a plastic milk pitcher on a hot stove ele-

Michael Runtz explores insects
MICHAEL RUNTZ Column As you well know, most insects have wings and can fly quite well. Some, like butterflies, dragonflies, bees, and wasps, own two pairs of wings. Flies, on the other hand, have only one pair that powers flight; the other pair is reduced to two little balls on short stalks. These are mechanosensory structures called halteres that serve to stabilize movement during flight. With their wings insects can move to distant sources of food, escape predators, locate mates, deposit eggs in the right habitat, and even migrate to distant lands. But recently I came across an insect with wings that chose a very different way of travelling through the air. When one is lucky enough to glimpse one of these creatures flying between plants in a wetland, it is hard not to mistake it for a piece of fluff or even a small seed carried by a parachute. In fact they are so difficult to see that as soon as you catch a glimpse of one, it usually vanishes before your eyes, leaving you won-
dering as to whether you really saw anything at all. This unusual insect is a fly known as the phantom crane fly. Now, some of you may be familiar with crane flies. These long-legged flies look like giant mosquitoes; while some species have short mouthparts, others bear a long proboscis like that owned by those familiar biting flies. But before you grab a baseball bat next time you see a crane fly, be aware that even if one has a long proboscis, it is for sipping nectar, not dining on human blood. Although they both possess extraordinarily long legs and bear similar names, crane flies and phantom crane flies are not closely related. In fact they belong to two different fly families, the Tipulidae and Ptychopteridae, respectively. A phantom crane fly's body and wings are small but its legs span several times its 10 millimetre body length. The spidery legs are composed of segments that are alternately black and white, a pattern that visually breaks up the shape of the legs, rendering them well camouflaged in the world of dark and light contrast in which phantom crane flies live. The legs do more than render their owners near invisible. The distal segments are large and full of air-carrying tracheal tubes. When the legs are stretched out, the enlarged segments act like balloons and get set

adrift by the slightest of breezes. When you watch a phantom crane fly "fly," it slowly and aimlessly drifts a metre or less above the water, bouncing off plants when the breeze carries it off course. The larvae display a very different lifestyle. They live in the mud, dining on decaying organic material and breathing through a long siphon that, like a periscope, gets extended up to the surface when air is needed. While the larvae do eat, adult phantom crane flies appear to eat very little or perhaps not eat at all. Obviously it doesn't take much fuel for flight that is powered by the wind! He has worked as a naturalist in provincial and national parks, hosted the television series Wild by Nature, and has written 11 books on natural history topics.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

congratulations graduates of 2018!
horoscopes ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20
CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22
LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23
Cancer, it is important to support others’ goals and the steps they take to achieve them, even if you do not necessarily agree with their formula for success.
Avoid going too far off in your own direction this week, Libra. Before making any rash decisions, take some time to ask questions and get answers.
LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23
SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22
Taurus, planning stages are over and now you’re about to turn your goals into reality. Just be sure to adapt to the changing environment as things unfold.
Happiness has less to do with what is happening in the world and more with your own perceptions, Leo. Keep this in mind as you move forward in life.
GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21
VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22
Scorpio, if something doesn’t initially work to your liking, don’t be shy about giving it another go. The challenges ahead will be worth it when you ultimately succeed.
Aries, when everything is going your way, you are absolutely glowing. But if things don’t come naturally to you, frustration may set in. Find a balance between the two.
TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21
Gemini, you might be seeking ways to help others in need, but you do not have patience when things take longer than expected. Stick to the plan and see it through.
Virgo, challenges at work may be tiring you out. People may seem like they are all over the map instead of working together. Try to get everyone going in the same direction.
CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20
SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Your creativity and emotions are linked this week, Sagittarius. Pour your heart and efforts into a special project that reflects just how you are feeling.
Nothing in a current relationship is unfolding as you had expected, Capricorn. That’s alright. This sense of adventure that keeps you guessing is a welcome change.
AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18
Aquarius, working closely with others is one of your strong points. Disagreements on how to approach different projects can be tricky to navigate, but you’re up to the task.
PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20
Pisces, this week there may be little separation between your career and personal life. If that works for you, forget the naysayers.

Clockwise from top, Admaston/Bromley celebrated several super citizens at its Canada Day celebrations July 1. Anna McIntyre, from left, was honoured as citizen of the year, Dianne Campbell is senior of the year and Rachel Enright is youth of the year. Owen Kennel, 7, had a booth at Renfrew's Canada Day event at Ma-Te-Way Park that is benefitting two local charities, Hospice Renfrew and the food bank. Owen is supporting the causes because his great grandma was a patient at hospice and he doesn't want anyone to go hungry. Dragonfly raises more than $2,000 for Renfrew food bank
Derek Dunn/Metroland
Jessica Forgie leads the run she organized in honour of her aunt, Linda Hull, who lives with ALS. The annual run or walk followed a three-, five-, or 10-km route along Millennium Trail in Renfrew. Three thousand Canadians are currently living with ALS and each day in Canada two to three people die from the disease.
ALS event raises funds in Renfrew DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com About 30 took part in the ALS walk/run, beginning at the Ma-Te-Way Commu-
nity Centre. The group made its way through Renfrew to raise funds for research on the disease that affects 3,000 Canadians. Two to three die each day from it.
It was another busy week at Dragonfly Golf Links beginning with the Friday Ladies Stroke Play League on June 22. Pat Lee finished in third position with new Dragonfly member Debbie O'Dwyer and Therese Williams tied for the runner-up position. Nobody could catch first place finisher Kathy Hamilton. Also on this day was the first ever Renfrew Food Bank Classic, where 54 golfers participated in a nine and dine tournament with proceeds going to the Renfrew Food Bank. The Renfrew Masonic Lodge, spearheaded by the Renfrew Masons' Gord Cross and Keith Richard put together a committee along with Doug Brookes from the food bank, and yours truly. It was a great night at Dragonfly with over $2,000 being raised, and we hope that this event will be even bigger and better next year! The third and final member fun day took place on June 24. This event also served as a qualifier for the men's and ladies intersectional teams. Great rounds from this day came from Bonnie Beattie, who shot "her best round ever" in tournament play, and from Jared Riopelle and Andrew Dick who were tied for low net score on the men's side. The Monday Men's League win-
ners were from the Weapons of Grass Destruction, with the Bunker Busters finishing closely behind in the runnerup position. Adrian Moyes was closest to the pin on No. 5, and Steve Schultz was closest on No. 7. Winning A flight for the first time on Tuesday night was Layton Knight-Locke Contracting, and the team from TF Custom signs were also first time winners in B flight. Bill Debenham was closest to the pin on No. 5, and Dragonfly ambassador/player assistant and all around good guy Chuck Lambert was closest on No. 7. Light rain was not enough to keep Wednesday night league from taking place. A flight winners were from Home Health and Supplies for the third week in a row. The B flight winners were from Deslaurier Custom Cabinets. Closest to the pin winners were Richard Labrie on No. 5, and Kevin Moran on No. 7. Thursday Ladies had the best night of the week for weather, as it was at the beginning of the heat wave. Closest to the pin winners were Sherry McLeod on No. 5, Gail Keyes on No. 7, Jen Kunopaskie on No. 13, and Christina McKinnon on No. 18. Next week I will report on the 18 hole team

ACT FOUNDATION Training students to save lives just got a big boost at Bishop Smith Catholic High School and St. Joseph's Catholic High School from the Advanced Coronary Treatment Foundation. Both schools are receiving the needed training equipment to enable teachers to train students in how to use an automated external defibrillator, otherwise known as an AED. The AED is a small, easy-touse device (with voice prompts) that can tell when a heart stops beating effectively and delivers an electric shock to restart the heart. With many community centers, arenas and other sports facilities and public places now having AEDs, the importance of people knowing how to use them is high. About 40,000 Canadians suffer cardiac arrest each year. This represents one cardiac arrest every 12 minutes, every day of the year. It can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any age. Early CPR combined with early defibrillation can increase survival rates for cardiac arrest victims by up to 75 per cent according to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. "Easy-to-use defibrillators are appearing in many public places. The schools already teach young people to act, to start CPR. Now we want them to grab the defibrillator on the wall and use that, too. These schools are teaching life skills that save lives," says Dr. Justin Maloney, medical director,
ACT Foundation. The two high schools are receiving the needed CPR/AED training mannequins, AED training units, and curriculum materials to enable the teachers to train the students thanks to the ACT Foundation and health partners AstraZeneca Canada, Sanofi Canada, Amgen Canada, and provincial partners, the Government of Ontario and Hydro One. This initiative will see more than 270 students from the communities of Pembroke and Renfrew empowered by their teachers with essential life-saving skills every year. The ACT Foundation is the charitable organization that is establishing CPR and defibrillator training programs in high schools throughout Ontario and across Canada. Mannequins and defibrillator training units are donated to schools and high school teachers are trained as instructors to train all students prior to graduation. "We are thrilled with the support of our partners," says Sandra Clarke, the ACT Foundation's executive director. "Thanks to them, we are able to donate the needed training equipment to the two high schools. Students will bring their life-saving skills to current and future families, building stronger communities and saving lives." To date, the ACT Foundation has set up the CPR program in more than 1,790 high schools nationwide, empowering more than 3.9 million youth to save lives.

Thank you to my wonderful family for hosting a great “Birthday Tea.” It was very special to spend time with so many friends and relatives.
Thanks to Dr. Gordon for your care of George over the years. Also Boyce’s Funeral Home and Mel’s Flowers for your professional support. And the UCW for the wonderful luncheon. And most of all, to my best friend Heather Vincent, who took George in to live with her, even though both of us didn’t know that was his plan, until after he sold the house. Your compassion and care, especially these last days, allowed my dad his wish of dying at home. For you to take off work to look after him, when I couldn’t be there, I’m forever grateful. Richard Couper
Former Harbourmaster, Westport Harbour It is with great sadness that the family of Richard (Rick) Gordon Couper, aged 66, announces his passing at the Perth District Hospital on June 21, 2018 after a courageous long-fought battle with pancreatic cancer. Rick was born in Montreal, Quebec, to Richard (Dick) and Robina (Ruby) Couper and was the eldest of 4 children. Rick will be remembered for his love of boating, of photography, and of finding great deals on really cool gadgets. A proud “Winter Texan”, Rick spent his winters in Rockport TX before his illness brought him home to Westport fulltime. Rick will never be forgotten by his wife and best friend of 40 years, Cheryl (nee Gavigan), and his children Christopher (Michelle) and Danielle Leroux (Steve). Rick will always have a place in the hearts of his much-loved grandchildren Jack and Laura and Nick and Tyson. Rick will be remembered by his brothers John (Theresa), Ian (Leesa), and by his sister Susan (Glenn) as well as his Gavigan in-laws including Wayne (Glenna), Lloyd (Linda), the late Mark (Alice) and Carole (Shack). Rick will also be missed by many nieces and nephews, by his friends, and by anyone who shared his clever wit. Rick helped beat the odds with the help of the wonderful staff at Country Roads Community Health Centre, the Kingston Cancer Centre, Westport Village Pharmacy and was able to die with dignity thanks to the compassionate staff of the Perth District Hospital. Thank-you to everyone who stood beside Rick in his fight. Per Rick’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will take place on Sunday July 8th from 1-4 at the Westport Legion.

Reverend Howard Leo Chabot
1940 - 2018 Reverend Howard Leo Chabot, priest of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pembroke, passed away on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at the age of 77. Father Chabot was born in Arnprior, Ontario, on August 28, 1940. He attended elementary and high school in Arnprior, St. Mary’s Redemptorist College, Brockville, St. George’s Novitiate of the Redemptorist Fathers, St. Augustine’s Seminary and the Grand Seminary of Montreal. He recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of his ordination having been ordained to the priesthood on May 4, 1968 in his home parish of St. John Chrysostom, Arnprior, by Bishop William J. Smith. Shortly after ordination, Father Chabot attended the Divine Word International Centre in Scarborough. Father was Parochial Vicar in the parishes of Our Lady of Mercy, Bancroft, and St. Columbkille Cathedral, Pembroke, as well as serving at Our Lady of Sorrows, Petawawa. As parish priest, he served the parishes of St. Paul the Hermit, Sheenboro, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Braeside, Most Holy Name of Jesus, Pembroke, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, LaPasse and Our Lady of Grace, Westmeath, and Our Lady of Lourdes, Pembroke. In addition to his parish work, Father Chabot served in the diocese as Director of Catholic Social Services, the Office of the Lay Apostolate, the Office of Religious Education, member of the Priestly Life Committee, Zone Chairman of the Pembroke Pastoral Zone and the Office of Vocations. He also exercised his many talents as chaplain of the Pembroke Police Services, as Probation/Aftercare Children’s Services Division of the Pembroke Community and Social Services as well as chaplain to the Sisters of St. Joseph, Pembroke. After such an extended and lengthy ministry, Father Chabot entered retirement on July 31, 2005. However, Father Chabot did not retire to sit quietly: even in retirement from full-time parish ministry, he led workshops and preached retreats and days of recollection in many parishes and smaller groups. Preceded in death by his parents George and Cecelia Chabot (nee Cleroux), by infant brother Joseph, by brother Dalt (Judy) Chabot, and by sisters Doris (Des) Herrick and Mildred (Wib) Clarke. Sadly missed by many nieces, nephews and Clergy Faithfull of the Diocese of Pembroke. All are invited to the Rite of Reception of the Body at St. Columbkille Cathedral, Pembroke, on Monday, July 2nd, at 2:00 p.m. Following the Rite of Reception, friends may pay their respects until 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial, presided by His Excellency, Bishop Michael Mulhall, will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 3rd at 10:30 a.m. also at St. Columbkille Cathedral. Following the funeral liturgy, interment will take place in the Malloch Road Cemetery, Arnprior. As an expression of sympathy, donations to the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul would be appreciated. Honoring Father Chabot’s wishes, the Mission with John Pridmore being held at St. Columbkille’s Cathedral, Pembroke on October 1-3, 2018 will proceed. Arrangements by the Neville Funeral Home 491 Isabella St., Pembroke, ON, K8A 5T8 (613) 732-7481

In loving memory of our cherished nephew/cousin Ty Taken from us on July 02 2002
In loving memory of a dear husband Les McNulty April 15, 1931 – July 6, 2015 I think of you every day, And miss you more than words can say, Gone but not forgotten. Love Donna
Nothing can ever take away The love a heart holds dear Fond memories linger every day Remembrance keeps you near Our memories are happy ones, Playful childhood’s and family fun, Camping and fishing and yelling out loud Dreaming and hoping and loving May the winds of love blow softly And whisper so you’ll hear; We will always love and miss you And wish that you were here
Her father’s little princess, Her mother’s baby girl, Her sister’s greatest confidante, Her brother’s cultured pearl. A loving, caring, smiling girl. A beauty from the start, The music she loved, her dearest friend, a country girl at heart. Life is like the giant waves, That dip and curl and spin, We sometimes get caught up in that, and feel we just can’t win. Why did those waves take her away? I guess we’ll never know. She had built a wall around herself, And let her troubles grow. And now she’s in a greater place, In God’s loving gracious arms, An angel watching over us, A precious, priceless charm. Love Mom, Dad, Cassie, Geoff and Family
Forever in our hearts Bud XOXO Janice, Harry, Jen and Kate

24 OPINION
Excitement of new bathing suits wears off quickly Aunt Freda's 'gifts' were rarely practical on farm, columnist recalls
MARY COOK Column Mother said Father's sisters, Aunt Lizzie in Regina, and Aunt Freda in Chicago, had no idea what we
needed on the farm they had left years before. Although she was always grateful to Aunt Lizzie for the twice-a-year hand-medown box of boys and men's clothes she sent on the CPR train, Aunt Freda's parcels were a different story. I knew Chicago was a big city, because my brother Everett showed me a map of the place in a book he had brought home from the Renfrew library, so that made me think Aunt Freda must be as rich as Aunt Lizzie who lived in Regina. Every now and then a parcel would arrive, and although we kids were as excited as blazes to get something wrapped in brown paper in the mail, the excitement faded away pretty quickly, because usually
what was inside was either something we couldn't use, or was a piece of clothing not the least suitable for life on the farm ... like the pure silk bathrobe she sent Father, who went to bed in his underwear every night. Or the box of a few dozen pieces of wires, boxes and contraptions that made no sense, until we called Uncle Alec from the next farm to help us figure it out. It didn't take him long to tell us to pack it up and put it in the drive shed, because it was pieces that had to be put together to make a radio. It came with a long cord with a plug on the end, and with no electricity on the farm, it joined several other mysterious parcels coming our way from Chicago. And then came the day
when a parcel arrived from Aunt Freda addressed to Audrey. Never had I seen my sister so excited. She tore into the parcel and pulled out two bathing suits ... one in her size, and an identical one for me. We had never had storebought bathing suits before. They were navy and white stripes, and were made of pure wool, according to the label attached to the straps. It didn't take Audrey and me long to get out of our clothes, put on the suits and head for the Bonnechere. "Audrey, mine itches like crazy," I said as we made a beeline for the river. Audrey assured me once they were wet, they would soften up. "They're pure wool, you know," she said.
Well, as soon as we hit the water, the suits took on a life of their own. They went stiff as boards, and mine, since I was bone thin, became a cage, and separated about two inches from my body. Audrey's clung to her, but the look on her face told me that would be last time we would be wearing Aunt Freda's swimsuits. We tore home, and Audrey said she was sure the suits could stand up on their own, as we peeled them off and got into our flour bag underwear. Of course, we had to write thank you letters to Aunt Freda, and under Mother's directions we weren't allowed to tell a lie, so we just said how nice it was to have something that came from a big store in Chicago.
That winter, in one of the braided rugs Mother made every year, you could plainly see a couple of rows of navy blue and white wool cleverly worked in with the discarded work socks, and other woollens no longer wearable. After all, there was a Depression on, and nothing was wasted. Interested in an electronic version of Mary's books?
