On July 7 the Hospice Renfrew Secret Garden Tour welcomed more than 100 people and raised more than $2,000.

The family-friendly self-drive or cycle garden tour brought visitors to five secret locations, with artists, strawberries, cake, tea, a treasure hunt and more.

The event was sponsored by the Arnprior Public Library, Bishop Water, McGregor's Produce, Miss Teen Ontario East and Jo-Anne Dowdall Brown Steeped Tea.

Dowdall Brown was also one of the tour guides at one of the secret locations and was very pleased with the event.

"It's to make more people aware of what we have and that it needs to be fundraised to keep it free," said Dowdall Brown.

The next big anniversary event coming up is the 12th annual Aiken-

head's Hospice Classic on Aug. 17 at the Renfrew Golf Club.

Registration starts at 11 a.m. with anew shotgun start time of 12:30 p.m.

Cost is $600 per team, which includes lunch, dinner, cart and prizes.

Municipal candidates slowly start to sign up for Oct. 22 election TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com It is a wait-and-see approach for many local municipal candidates.

Some current councillors say they want to run again but admit getting the necessary 25 signatures can take time.

Others say they are not sure if they want to run for mayor or councillor.

It's a tough decision and one not taken lightly by those who are considering running.

To be eligible to run in the upcoming municipal election you need to be a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years of age, reside in or be the owner, tenant or the spouse of an owner or tenant in the municipality, and not prohibited from voting under any law.

Nominations for the Oct.

22 election officially opened on May 1 and only a few candidates have signed up so far in each of the local municipalities.

The nomination period officially closes on July 27 at 2 p.m.

In Renfrew, only Callum Scott has filed his nomination papers for the mayor's seat.

Renfrew will elect five councillors and one reeve and so far only four candidates have handed in their paperwork: Current councillors Kate Windle, and Andrew Evans and former councillor Clint McWhirter.

Also running is former councillor and NHA/NHL Birthplace Museum director James Miller.

Only current Mayor Robert Kingsbury is seeking election in Horton for the mayor's position.

There will be four councillors elected. So far only current councillor Glen Campbell has filled out the required paperwork.

Man drowns at Owl Rafting in Whitewater Region: OPP A Markham man has drowned at Owl Rafting in Whitewater Region, OPP report.

The Renfrew Detachment of the OPP investigated the drowning on Friday, July 6.

OPP officers, Renfrew County Paramedics and firefighters from Whitewater Region responded to the report of a swimmer who had gone under water at Owl Rafting on Friday evening at 6:28 p.m. The swimmer was located and pulled to shore where resuscita-

tion efforts were started.

Police say the man was transported to hospital by paramedics but was pronounced dead a short time later. The deceased has been identified as Charles (Chuck) Ozulumba, 22, of Markham.

The Office for the Chief Coroner of Ontario is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Renfrew OPP. A post mortem examination has been scheduled.

Foul play is not suspected.

Construction bids for the Ma-te-way Activity Centre second ice-pad expansion came in well over budget, to the tune of almost $2.5 million.

That has put the project on hold for now, and the municipal government and its partners are back to the drawing board.

At the July 3 special meeting, council learned of the four tender submissions on what was estimated to be an $8-million project: • Laurin General Contractors, $10,475,000; • McDonald Brothers Construction, $10,494,000; • Frecon Construction, $10,897,000; • R.E. Hein, $11,019,000.

Town clerk Kim Bulmer said the tenders are "significantly above budget" as it was determined by staff and consultants, including N45 Architecture.

"Council has given (recreation director) Kevin Hill the authority to work with the architect and the low tender to see if there is any cost savings," said Bulmer.

It is not highly unusual that bids come in significantly above budget. In this case, he said, many factors many have played a role, even the U.S. government's recently imposed steel tariffs.

However, council asked the project's lead, parks and recreation director Kevin Hill, to effectively "shelve" the project, as Bulmer called it, to explore more revenue-generation opportunities and cost savings.

"Unless there is significant savings that can be found, it certainly puts this project on the shelf for the short term," said Bulmer. "Council will more than likely vote on July 17 on how they wish to proceed."

Hill will work with N45 and Laurin on the revisions.

"We are still working on the project, with the lowest bidder and architect, to make it come in on budget," said Hill. "It holds us up for a week or two to work on it, but we hope to

bring it back to council in a timely fashion."

According to Hill, the goal is still to open the second icepad in the summer of 2019.

"I was disappointed, when you have a budget and express that to builders and the design team, but it is what it is, and we will try to bring it back," said Hill. "It's one of those situations that is frustrating, but we are working towards a resolution."

The Town of Renfrew wants to build a second ice surface, a walking track, gymnasium, fitness centre, multipurpose rooms, museum and administrative offices, at the site.

Work on the project goes back to November 2016.

Renfrew crash investigation continues TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com On July 3, Renfrew Ontario Provincial Police responded to a four-vehicle crash that closed Highway 17 west of Bruce Street at 6:04 a.m.

Renfrew County Paramedics transported three drivers to hospital with serious injuries.

One of the drivers was later airlifted from hospital to a trauma centre. On July 10, OPP Const.

Janice Sawbridge confirmed the

investigation is continuing as they are waiting for test results from the Centre of Forensic Sciences.

However, preliminary investigation revealed a vehicle travelling eastbound entered the westbound lanes and struck a vehicle head-on. Two other vehicles were unable to avoid these vehicles and were involved in the collision.

Charges are pending against the driver of the eastbound vehicle.

Impaired driver On Thursday, June 28 at approximately 9 p.m. a driver was stopped for speeding on Highland Road in the Township of McNab/Braeside.

The male driver had been drinking and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. He was arrested and taken to the detachment for breath tests.

As a result of those tests Michael Kennelly, 67, of Ottawa was charged with driving over 80 mgs.

He was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on July 18.

Mischief Our Lady of Fatima School in Renfrew was a target for vandals on Thursday, June 28 between 10:30 and 11:30 p.m. Two doors and a window were damaged with rocks and a BB gun. It is believed a stolen key may have been used to access the building, but nothing was stolen and no further damage observed.

OPG IS CONDUCTING RESEARCH ON THE OTTAWA RIVER TO PROTECT ONTARIO’S BIODIVERSITY. Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is conducting research in the vicinity of its hydroelectric generating stations on the Ottawa River.

This research, which is being carried out by Kleinschmidt Associates and Bowfin Environmental Consulting, is in support of OPG’s ongoing American eel and lake sturgeon mitigation studies for these species at risk.

Kleinschmidt and Bowfin boats may be in close proximity to the shoreline as they complete day and nighttime fish abundance studies and shoreline inspections. This annual research is conducted under permits from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and in accordance with O. Reg. 242/08 (as amended by O. Reg. 176/13), under the Ontario Endangered Species Act. Work will continue until the end of October.

Renfrew Art in the Park set for July 14 On Saturday, July 14 the Renfrew Art Guild will be hosting Renfrew Art in the Park for its seventh year. A most unusual immigrant Plenty of illegal immigrants in nature, writes Michael Runtz The term "illegal immigrants" has been prominent in recent news. Of course, this refers to people who left their native homeland and secretly entered a different country. Nature, too, has plenty of illegal immigrants. Many of the local wildflowers currently blooming along roadsides are non-native species; chicory, blueweed (a.k.a. viper's bugloss), yarrow, and ox-eye daisy are but a few.

Some of nature's immigrants came to North America as decorative plants that escaped from the confines of their backyard prisons. Others arrived as seeds stowed in the soil ballast of sailing ships. When the soil was dumped to allow boats closer approach to the mainland, the seeds washed ashore and germinated. Eventually the plants spread to other parts of North America.

Insects have also arrived surreptitiously.

Some came with plants brought by the settlers.

Others arrived with food and timber shipped from afar, some like the emerald ash borer have devastating effects on native flora. Others, including the European skipper, a small butterfly found abundantly along roadsides, have been more benign. A grasshopper I recently came across falls in-

The first feature that caught my eye was bright green markings adorning its thorax (the body section containing legs and wings) and prothorax (the shieldlike structure behind the head). The second was its whip-like antennae, a feature that placed it in the long-horned orthopterans (orthoptera is the order of grasshoppers, crickets, and katydids). The grasshopper was a European species known as Roesel's katydid (Metrioptera roeselii).

After their discovery near Montreal in 1953, Roesel's katydids spread through Quebec, Ont., and the northeastern states.

Like most of their kin, they eat plants, especially grasses. However, the katydid group to which they belong also has a penchant for eating smaller insects, which makes them omnivores.

In southern and central Europe, where it is known as Roesel's bush-cricket, its range is also expanding.

There it occurs in both a short-winged, reputedly flightless form and a longwinged, flying form. The long-winged form is rare, constituting only about one per cent of the popula-

tion, but during hot summers more of this type is produced. Thus, warmer summers due to climate change have likely played a role in its range expansion.

In North America the longwinged form is prevalent and very likely this summer we will see many more of that type produced.

To attract mates, male Roesel's katydids stridulate, which means they rub together a "file" and a "scraper" at the base of their forewings to create a raspy "song." Males sing from tall grasses to achieve a wider broadcast. Once a female is attracted and suitably impressed, she climbs on the singer's back and copulation proceeds.

During mating, male katydids employ several types of genital structures.

One is a paired structure known as "titillaters" whose purpose was unknown until recently when German researchers found that inside female Roesel's katydids, the titillaters beat a rhythm against a plate loaded with sensory cells. Thus, the titillaters' function is to stimulate.

It appears that even for grasshoppers sex can be titillating!

So on June 28, it was just the end of one chapter as the St. Joseph's Catholic High School class of 2018 said goodbye to the school.

As students, teachers, family and friends gathered in the school gym it was Katherine Hall who delivered the valedictorian speech. She reminded the class that it was a difficult year for many reasons but says they have come together.

"We have a unified graduating class - still grieving the tragic loss of our friend and classmate, Alex Paquette, yet with hearts full of kindness and empathy for those around them," said Hall in her address. "This year was difficult both around the world and in our community for many reasons.

With the refugee crisis affecting many nations, the accident in October claiming the lives of two young men in our community, this year's flu season (which was worse than other years, I swear), and the general stress of leaving high school and moving into the next stage of our journey."

She thanked staff, teachers and family.

"They say it takes a village to raise a child, and for many of the graduates this is the truth.

Through your unwavering support and sacrifice over the course of 18 years, you have enabled us to

walk across this stage tonight," said Hall. " You have put our interests before your own, believed that we had the talent to reach our goals, and supported our respective journeys even when they didn't seem logical. Because of this, you deserve the congratulations just as much as these graduates do."

She talked about the breaking down of walls and left the graduates with these final words.

"As we leave here tonight to embark on the next phase of our lives, it is my hope that the graduating class of 2018 maintains their empathy and continues to always be willing to extend compassion toward others they encounter," said Hall. "Take with you the happy memories and the legacy of those not here with us today, and remember that you always have a home here at St. Joseph's High School."

The 112th commencement exercise at Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI) was hosted on June 28 at the school.

Camilo Sebastian delivered the valedictory address, acknowledging the different attributes a number of teachers instilled in the graduating class.

"It is safe to say that we have been well equipped to face the future. Renfrew Collegiate and its fine teachers have made sure that we will have the necessary tools available to embrace successes and overcome challenges," said Sebastian. "And, for that we thank you, the teachers and administrators who nurtured us and challenged us to be more."

As they marked the last day together as the class of 2018 he wondered about the various professions his classmates would select.

"I know that every single one of us is strong, stronger than we may know and we will overcome whatever we face,"

said Sebastian. "The thing is, there are many unknowns facing us, but we are more than ready to take the future by storm. I have learned that the most important element in order to succeed in life is to believe in yourself, because when you do you will achieve your goals."

He quoted his mom who gave him this advice: Nothing is impossible, just those who will not dare.

"I guess she is right about this," said Sebastian.

"RCI has given us the confidence, determination, and the skill-set necessary to accomplish what we set our minds to."

He went on to thank family, friends, teachers and staff before concluding.

"I say thank you very much, Class of 2018, for the wonderful years we've spent together. It has truly been an awesome high school journey. And now I say goodbye; in doing so I would like to share a line from Ralph Waldo Emerson. Emerson wrote, "What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters

with a host of other musical guests helping celebrate the Stone Fence Theatre's 15th anniversary.

This season, the company is introducing some innovations to launch the new show. There will be a dress rehearsal open to the public, with admission by donations, on July 11. Then, on opening night, July 12, there will be a talk back session following the show at which audience members can talk with the cast and crew about the show and ask questions.

Stone Fence Theatre, the theatrical voice of the Ottawa Valley since 2003, is presenting a new musical in 2018 that is sure to warm hearts, fire up Valley pride and get a lot of people talking.

I Come from the Valley! Tales and Times of Joan Finnigan brings to life the stories that the Valley's most illustrious author, Joan Finnigan, collected from Valley old-timers as well as the tumultuous times she lived through. The show is written by the company's producer, Ish Theilheimer, with Johanna Zomers, and directed by Chantal Elie-Sernoskie. It presents a grab bag of the author's funniest and most poignant stories, many of them in musical form for the first time.

Joan Finnigan, who published 28 books, was the daughter of one of the NHL's first superstars, Frank Finnigan.

Raised in Roaring '20s Ottawa, her parents came from Shawville, Que., which was her second home as a child. There, she absorbed the Valley's story-telling tradition.

When, in the mid-'60s, she suddenly became a single mother of three, she rejected all sensible options and set out to raise them on what she could earn as a freelance writer. She had a huge success with the script she wrote for NFB film Best Damned Fiddler from Calabogie to Kaladar, which became Canada's Film of the Year in 1969.

Joan became a Canadian literary celebrity in the '70s but turned from that to focus on what really drove her - collecting oral histories from the Valley's old-timers before their stories died with them. Always outspoken and often controversial, Finnigan, herself, was a literary giant. The play follows her life and work in story and song - most of the songs set to traditional Celtic

tunes in light of her Irish roots.

Playwright Ish Theilheimer and his songwriting collaborator Johanna Zomers are both great admirers of Finnigan's work. It draws on the jokes, yarns and history she picked up in literally thousands of hours of interviewing she did with Valley people in kitchens, taverns and barnyards in the '70s and '80s. The company, celebrating its 15th anniversary this season, is producing the show and touring with it throughout the Valley.

The songs and dialogue in the show are drawn, as much as possible, from Finnigan's works and words, including stories, poetry and personal interviews. The music is Celtic and Irish in flavour, with most of the songs based on traditional Irish fiddle and pipe tunes. Musical accompaniment is by the Donohue Family of Douglas - Aidan (17), Mhari (15), Hannah (13), Kieran (10) and their mother Siobheann, who is a member of Lakefield, Ontario's famous Leahy family.

All are multi-instrumentalists and born show people.

Stone Fence Theatre favourite Fran Pinkerton assumes the title role of Joan Finnigan and is supported by a talented cast of Stone Fence Theatre veterans and new faces.

Seventeen performances are planned, with five summer supper shows in Rankin and one in Barry's Bay, and a stop in Sheenboro, Que. In fall, there will be performances in Westmeath, Almonte, Shawville, Killaloe, Renfrew (with supper), Rankin (with supper), Deep River and Ottawa, all places that Finnigan knew and loved.

Also on tap this season is an Aug. 7 concert - an Ottawa Valley Jubilee. It features the Ottawa Valley's favourite singer, Gail Gavan, who returns to Stone Fence Theatre after several years' absence, with one of the Valley's, and Canada's, greatest fiddlers, Louis Schryer, along

Renfrew resident travels to England and Iceland TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com Hannah MacMillan is the first to admit her love for travel is an expensive addiction.

MacMillan was born and raised in Renfrew on a farm near Braeside and graduated from Renfrew Collegiate Institute. The avid traveller has ventured off to Brazil, Costa Rica, Ireland, Northern Ireland, France, Belgium and The Netherlands.

On May 18 the Renfrew resident travelled with her cousin Sarah Schroeder, originally from Cobden, to England to take in the royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

The pair are both royal fans growing up in the Princess Diana era, when Prince William and Kate got married it was not the

opportune time in her life to go to their wedding.

"When this opportunity rolled around we said we had to go," said MacMillan on her fifth trip to the United Kingdom (UK), she last went to the UK and Ireland in 2016.

They stayed in London the night before the wedding and boarded a train to Windsor at 'Harry and Meghan' central, and changed for the special occasion to take in the event.

"The crowd was just so energetic, it was really just a party in the park, they had drinks and washrooms set up," said MacMillan who was also interviewed live on television during the coverage. "It was just a great atmosphere, most of the people were locals and they just love the royals."

Their first glimpse at

royalty was when Markle zoomed by on her way to the church.

"She had gone by so fast because she was running late, they actually had a deal with the airport to reroute the planes and if she was late they were going to cancel that," explained MacMillan. One of the reporters covering the event even asked them if they had missed the bride-to-be.

The best part of the ceremony for her?

"When they sang God Save the Queen the entire crowd sang it and that was cool," said MacMillan.

When the newlyweds drove by in the horse driving carriage it was a perfect moment.

"When they rode past it was just a lot of energy," said MacMillan.

"She looked beautiful with her

crown and it was just wonderful."

She also likes to hit up unique places on her travels, this time they hit the Ginstitute in London where they got to make their own gin.

She came back for two weeks at her job as the coordinator at The Ottawa Hospital Foundation. Then she was off again on a camping trip to Iceland.

"It was awesome, it is such a beautiful place. We went to the hot springs, waterfalls, the blue lagoon," said MacMillan, who camped in a camper with friends on the adventure.

"We went for the cultural and beautiful scenes, not the weather."

What's up next for the world traveller?

"I would like to go to Sweden next year!"

Dragonfly Golf Links aspires to have something for every level of golfer. Whether you are a low handicapper, a weekend warrior, or a professional duffer - we think that we can provide a great experience for all of you! This past week featured a three-day junior golf camp with 15 junior boys and girls aged between seven-12 years old. Not even 47 degrees with the humidity could slow this gang down. Good times were plentiful, and they even learned a little about golf too. Thanks to Alexander VanderPloeg for helping me run a successful camp. In efforts to continue the growth in junior golf, Dragonfly Golf Links is offering free golf to all kids for the month of July. All children must be accompanied by a paying adult, or a Dragonfly adult member. Now on to league play results.

The Friday Ladies Stroke Play League featured Cathy Campbell as a first time, first place winner.

Therese Williams and Joanne Dumouchel were nipping at her heels in second and third place respectively.

Monday men's league busted on the scene with the Bunker Busters taking first place. Enright Tree Services were the runners up finishing two strokes behind. Closest to the pin winners

were Corey Jackson on #13, and Garry Gourley on #18. TF Custom signs were not only the B flight winners two weeks ago, but they won A flight this past Tuesday night. The Wild Horsemen wrangled their way to victory in B flight. Butch Brown and Brian Yolkowski were closest to the pin winners. On Wednesday there was a tie for first place in A flight between the Abandoned Cubs & Cobus Homes. Normally we settle ties by giving the nod to the team with the highest handicap, but these two teams actually had the exact same handicap. The Skunk Alley Boys came up smellin' like roses to win B flight. Closest to the pin winners were James Briscoe and Kevin Moran.

The Thursday Ladies League marked the last night of the heat wave. It was so hot that some teams did not want to come out.

Those who did, enjoyed a beautiful night for golf as the wind picked up and blew away the humidity. The Call Bell Gals smoked the competition to win A flight. There was a tie between the Horton Hackers and the Stroke This in B flight, and Closest to Pinned were the clear winners of C flight. Closest to the pin contest winners were Kelsey Cram on #5 and Lesley Wright on #7. Until next week ...

Douglas fishing derby catches large crowd TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com The annual Douglas Lions Fishing Derby, which has been running since 1992, was held on July 8 at the Douglas Beach with an estimated 40 young anglers taking part.

The free kids derby was held during the Ontario Free Fishing week from June 30 to July 8.

The winners: First place, Corbin Andrews, 2.12 pike; second place Carmondy Andrews 2.1 pike; third was a tie between Tyler Hoffman, Mason Rowan and Rhys McFarland, 1.12 pike; fourth place Delaney Dick, 1.10 bass; tied for fifth Angus Dick and and Erika McFarlane, 1.6 pike.

Once upon a time, youngsters collected stuff. Cards, bugs, coins, stamps, and so forth. These days, coins and stamps seem to be more of an "old man's" hobby. Nevertheless, the McDougall Mill Museum has a fascinating collection of currency, Renfrew-related and otherwise, with piggy banks to put them in.

Looking at the vouchers and coupons, one is reminded how many businesses used to deal in their own trademark coupons, similar to Canadian Tire dollars.

The display features an Eaton's refund check for one cent, as does the coupon to J.M. Russell Renfrew Druggist (phone # 605). Not to be outdone, the Raglan Drug Store had cards worth 1 ¼ cents in their profit sharing merchandise. It seemed, a penny was serious business back then.

You may remember the Renfrew Western Tire and Auto Supply at the corner of Raglan and Patrick street, which offered 25 cent coupons. The collection also includes a Penny Bank of Toronto savings book from 1904. The investor deposited 25 cents in September of 1913, which grew to a whopping $1.70 by February, 1914. Among the early Canadian bills, there is a dollar bill from 1923, featuring King George V, and the Library of Parliament on the reverse. Also, in the collection are 25 cent paper bills from the Dominion of Canada.

Renfrew also had its own currency, producing actual wooden nickels to commemorate the town's centennial (1858-1958).

There are also two types of Renfrew dollar bills, one featuring the swinging bridge, for the town's 125th year, and the other for the town's 150th year, with the NHA/NHL featured. The funniest bill is a Diefendollar. If you think our dollar is doing poorly today at 77 cents U.S., imagine back in 1962 that people thought our dollar at 92 ½ cents was worth mocking.

The reverse of the Diefendollar states: "Genuine devalued Diefendollar, similar to dollars worth much more, confuses the experts.

This bill tends to fade, keep away from light." You can then place these savings in any of the piggybanks, also on display. My personal favourite is the sad old man bank, who clearly hadn't saved enough for retirement. Incidentally, the museum also offers free Wi-Fi, and has an excellent reading corner featuring a vast array of old newspapers, scrap books, magazines, historical atlases, and a large number of books on the history of Renfrew.

Steep price of $5 for new glasses too much for Father Dime store substitutes were always good enough, Mary Cook recalls

MARY COOK Column There was no doubt about it. Something had to be done about Father's eyes. He held the Renfrew Mercury two feet away from his face, and still couldn't see the printing.

He had to ask someone what time it was on the gingerbread clock hanging on the kitchen wall in front of him.

So Mother insisted it was time he went in to see the eye doctor in Renfrew.

Father insisted there wasn't a thing wrong with his eyes, but Mother

pointed out that he had just been looking at the paper upside down.

We had gone through this before with disastrous results, with Father storming out of the eye doctor's office and heading right for the dime store where he got a pair of glasses for 65 cents.

They were no longer doing the job. Father rubbed them with his red handkerchief, spit on them, tried them on again, and it was plain to see, the 65cent glasses were useless.

I could remember the trip into the eye doctor's that Saturday a while ago, and I silently prayed Father wouldn't cause another scene like he did that day.

It was all because the eye doctor asked for $2 before he even began examining Father's eyes, and then told him that when

the new ones were ready, he'd have to cough up another $3.

Well, that's all it took for Father to storm out of the office telling everyone within earshot how you could buy a good heifer for $5, and it would be a frosty day in July before he'd be spending two dollars to have his eyes examined, and another three dollars to get his glasses. No siree!!!

Well, that was months ago, and now we were headed back to the same eye doctor, and unless Father had a change of heart, I couldn't imagine there would be much difference in his feelings about paying $5 for a pair of glasses.

Father lamented all the way into Renfrew. We five children were crammed into the car like sardines in a tin can, and the heat of

the summer day did little for our dispositions. Emerson kept hitting Earl on the arm, and Audrey said she wished she had stayed home. But Mother said the trip was urgent ... Father simply could not go on any longer with these dime store glasses. It was time he had a professional test his eyes, and that it would be money well spent. Father was chewing on his pipe which wasn't a good sign.

The Model T was steered into a spot on Raglan Street in front of the building, where there was a store with the office of the eye doctor on the floor above. A little brass plate on the outside wall had the doctor's name on it, with an arrow pointing to the door that led upstairs.

Mother said it looked very professional. Father said it looked like it should

have a dollar sign on it too.

Mother ignored him.

We followed Mother and Father up the narrow stairs to a landing where there were two doors. One was just an ordinary door, but the other one had a frosted glass in it, and a sign that said "Please Walk In", with the doctor's name and a lot of initials after it.

Well, that's when all hell broke loose! The doctor, a tall thin man with glasses which I was pretty sure he made himself, looked at the seven of us, and it was like someone had put on a light bulb over his head!

He recognized Father at first glance, grabbed his suit jacket which was on the back of his chair, said he was sorry but he had an important appointment and asked us to make our own way out. He

beat us to the door and left us standing on the landing.

We made it to the dime store, Father headed right for the counter with the 65-cent glasses, tried on a few pairs, read the chart, handed the clerk some coins, she put the glasses in a hard blue case, Father jammed it into his pants pocket, and we were back on the farm at Northcote in time for supper.

The month of June has been a challenging time for the Renfrew Bridge Club. For three weeks the Club was evicted from their comfortable room and obliged to play on the cement surface of the ice rink; definitely a different experience. On June 13, the Club sponsored a barbecue for their members and saw 84 players show up. The Club's resources were stretched, but the Club Director, Dave Sulpher, never flinched and he arranged players and tables with impressive calm.

Each session's "highlight of the week" follows: • On June 6, the East-West hands on Board-24 must have been very strong as six pairs won 12 or more tricks. However, only Bruce Tennant and Judy Hill were bold enough to bid and make an impressive seven NT contract. Well done, folks!

• The June 13 session saw a full 21 tables in play.

Of the 18 times that Board 2 was played, 17 pairs bid four, five or six hearts. However, only Sylvia Zembower and Wayne Daze attempted a spade contract.

Though they were down six, they achieved the best east-west result. A shrewd sacrifice indeed!

• The story of the June 20 session was unwarranted enthusiasm being soundly punished. Of the many optimistic contracts that failed, several were down three, seven attempts were down four and one rash pair saw their doubled and vulnerable contract get crushed by five tricks; scoring 1400 for the defenders ... Ouch!

• On June 27, Board 9 displayed the fascinating variety of bridge. Each east-west pair bid some flavour of spade contract; but the results varied wildly; from four spades/down three to four spades/ making four. What a curious and sometimes aggravating game!
