dia artist and member of the Renfrew Art Guild. "I'm supposed to be doing these tulips. It just feels like I am directed to do these. I don't see them coming, they just pop up." She has created the following eight tulips for the Ottawa Tulip Festival, with the first sprouting in 2002. Her tulips mark important occasions, from the sombre to celebratory, including her 2005 tulip painted in memory of Diane Stuemer and her 2012 Royal Wedding tulip - commemorating the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton. She says she feels a connection with the Royal Family, as she was married one month after Princess Diana was, and also has two sons. One of Alexander's sons was married a month after Prince William and her youngest will marry this summer.
"From the mother of the groom point of view, these are my favourites, she is not here and I have the joy, this is really done for Princess Diana," said Alexander. This new tulip is very meaningful to Alexander. "I love the details, every section of the tulip
there is a story to tell," she said. What does she hope will happen to this newest tulip? "I heard (Harry and Meghan) are coming and it would be wonderful if they saw this," said Alexander. "I think they would love it particularly the bit with his mom."

The power of community “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” ~Margaret Mead
Sarah Robinson shares some insights into her first three months as the RVH Foundation’s Executive Director. My biggest learning? The generousity of this community. Every day people make a difference in our patients’ lives. They invest in our hospital through one-time donations and monthly giving, hosting and attending community events, and/or leaving a gift in their Will.
When it comes to lives, there is no value you can place on this type of support. All of this reminds me each and every day why I — and everyone at RVH — does what we do. While we may be a small community, we are changing people’s worlds.
Contact Sarah at 613-432-4851 ext. 263 or robinsonsa@renfrewhosp.com to learn more or donate
insideottawavalley.com
This quote has been an inspiration. It reminds me of the power of community. As I complete my first three months at the Renfrew Victoria Hospital Foundation I appreciate more and more the truth within these words. My job as the executive director is more than a fundraiser: It is an outlet for expression of the way our community comes together — as donors, as businesses, as volunteers, as people who care about others — to ensure all members of our region have access to the best possible healthcare close to home.
In my short time here, I have learned an enormous amount. First, while I grew up in the Valley, it wasn’t until I joined RVH that I realized how friendly and sincere people are. Every person I run into looks you in the eye, offers a warm smile and says “hello.” From nurses and patients, to maintenance and administration, everyone is welcoming. Secondly, healthcare funding is complex. While you may think it is a provincial responsibility, funding from the province doesn’t cover equipment. So, when RVH needs, as an example, a new ultrasound machine, the hospital has to come up with the money to purchase it.

Time's running out With just over a week remaining to file papers for this fall's municipal and school board elections, time is running out for candidates looking to be on the ballot. The deadline is July 27 at 2 p.m., which has been shortened by 120 days from the previous campaign period of Jan. 1 to the second Friday in September. These changes, along with a requirement for each candidate to collect 25 signatures from residents in municipalities with a population of more than 4,000 before filing their papers, were made in 2018 in an effort for the election process to be more transparent. Since the campaign period began on May 1, our local municipalities have seen quite a few candidates file their papers to run for their respective councils, including many newcomers. It's always encouraging to see new faces make the decision to sit on council and school boards and affect change at the local level. We need that mix of experience and new faces to infuse fresh ideas and a creative outlook on how to solve problems. Often it can be a thankless job with long hours, low pay and much criticism, but it can also be enriching. Having a say in writing your municipality's history is rewarding and making tough decisions on the future growth and development of an area isn't something to be taken lightly. It isn't always about cutting the ribbon at business openings or presenting awards, but determining whether things such as large scale developments, pesticide spraying on roadways or the revitalization of a downtown core are the right fit for a community. It's not an easy task; we know because we see those representatives debating around the table each week while covering council sessions. We witness the spirited, sometimes heated discussions as council members try to come to a consensus on a contentious issue. We will always need people to step up and take on these roles and applaud all of those who continue to serve their communities, both past and present. Municipal elections have always been an exciting time for our newspapers and we look forward to profiling the candidates in each of our areas to provide readers with some food for thought as they prepare to head to the polls Oct. 22.

• LETTERS & COMMENTARY • Scalpers score big with Ford To the editor: Upon recent inauguration as the new Progressive Conservative Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford has promised to lead the first ever true Government of the People. His first enacted policies however have not served the broad mass of Ontarians so much as a fraction or even a sliver of the people. One example that escaped much attention is the premier's suspension of antiscalping regulations installed by the previous government. Scalping is a market manipulation whereby online programs are used to masspurchase tickets for big sporting or concert events. After buying out tickets at massspeed and thereby monopolizing them, scalpers then resell tickets at severely inflated
prices at the expense of the consumer. In response to this practice, the now-suspended provisions of the Ticket Sales Act had prohibited tickets from being resold at above 50 per cent of their original value. (Last year the Green party of Ontario adopted anti-scalping policies as well.) The PCs had previously alleged this law was not reasonably enforceable. But they betrayed their lack of self-confidence by hiding the decision from the public until it was announced by the bureaucracy One would think that "the People" would be more likely to be the Ontarians hoping to buy affordable tickets, as opposed to the obscure profiteers of cyber scamming. But unless the PCs pledge to bring in a new tougher anti-scalping law, it seems those wanting to see who will score big at the hockey games may instead see big scores against

Weekday coach bus service available To the editor: Residents of Arnprior, Kinburn and surrounding areas have a great opportunity at their door steps: a direct weekday coach bus service between Arnprior/Kinburn and downtown Ottawa/Gatineau. The bus leaves at 6 a.m. and gets you downtown by 77:15 a.m., and returns at 4 p.m. in order to get you home by 55:15 p.m. (for details: http:// www.octranspo.com/routes/ rural_partners_classic_alliance_motorcoach#500). The cost in comparison to gas, parking as well as wear and tear on your car (not to men-
tion frayed nerves) is reasonable: only $9 each way (tickets are sold at Shoppers in Arnprior). A monthly pass is available for $325, available from the company (Classic Alliance Motorcoach), which also gives you full access to the OC Transpo system. Rather than dealing with a long and stressful drive, particularly during the winter, you can just sit back and relax, have a snooze, get caught up on personal or work emails, or even better take the opportunity to read one of those books you've been putting off for years - an added convenience is that the coach bus is bathroom-equipped! All in all a healthier and less expensive way to make the commute, not to mention that it's also environmentally friendly. See you on the bus! Bob Brossard Arnprior

Canoeing brings close encounters with wildlife
Runtz recounts brush with raccoon family
MICHAEL RUNTZ Column Few things are more enjoyable than launching a canoe at dawn and slowly paddling down a narrow, winding creek where every bend brings some new encounter with a living creature. That encounter might be a great blue heron launching itself from the shallows, loudly croaking its annoyance at being disturbed. Or it could be a belted kingfisher rattling a proclamation that it, too, is aware of an intruder entering its domain. Sometimes the encounter is a muskrat swimming across the creek, towing a bouquet of long leaves that will serve as a meal inside its hidden den in the creek bank. Recently I paddled down a lovely creek and met all of the aforementioned. I also came across raccoons at two different locations along the waterway. The first one immediately spotted me and splashed out of the shallows where it had been hunting frogs and other edible delights, quickly vanishing into the woods that bordered the creek. The other encounter
consisted of a female with three young that seemed unaware of my presence as I quietly floated closer. I watched motionless for a few minutes as their handlike paws groped through the water in an effort to locate something edible. As is the case for most mammals, raccoon females are abandoned by the males after mating, and care for their offspring unassisted. When old enough, the young follow their mother to her favourite feeding areas. Just like mom, their front paws are loaded with tactile sensory cells that allow them to identify food by touch. When raccoons grope the water with their paws, it is often thought they are washing their food before they eat it. They do not. I slowly and carefully tried to place my paddle across the gunwales before reaching for my camera. Unfortunately I wasn't careful enough, and a slight bang of wood on wood alerted the mother to my presence. She stood up and immediately began to growl. I froze, hoping she wouldn't see me. Meanwhile her three young scampered to safety, up a nearby tree. The youngsters, however, seemed not overly concerned, for they played with each other while their mother continued staring in my direction and growling. Whenever the mother raccoon looked up at her ba-
bies, I reached for my camera, and I froze whenever her head turned back my way. Eventually, I was able to reach it and got it into position, patiently waiting for the right moment to capture. It wasn't long in coming. One of the babies climbed down and snuggled up next to its mom, running its paws over her back and face as if to reassure her. One by one, its siblings climbed down, and soon the whole family was reunited. I hoped they would continue foraging for food, but led by the mother, they slowly moved farther down the shoreline until they were out of sight. So I started paddling farther down the creek, focusing now on the abundant dragonflies flying over the water. Soon I was lost in a world of high-speed chases and intimate encounters. Canoeing down a meandering creek is like having access to myriad television stations, with one major difference: all of nature's channels are well worth watching! The Nature email is mruntz@start.ca – Michael Runtz is a longtime columnist who teaches natural history and ornithology at Carleton University. He has worked as a naturalist in provincial and national parks, hosted the television series Wild by Nature and has written 11 books on natural history topics.

St. Joseph's Catholic High School - once known as the "Home of the Axemen" and, now, presently, the "Jaguar" - has a long and rich history in the performing arts. As the years have gone by, from 1928 to the present, nothing has changed in that respect, as the school continues to cultivate and grow talent in the realm of entertainment. This coming year, St. Joseph's will be celebrating 90 years as a high school in Renfrew, and, in light of this milestone, a first-ever Alumni Coffee House will take place on Friday, July 20 at 7 p.m. Tickets for this event will be sold at the door and are $10, with all proceeds going to Hospice Renfrew and the St. Joseph's High School Performing Arts Department. The Coffee House presents a wonderful opportunity for students of past graduating classes to reconnect, and there is no question that guests can expect an evening of quality music and entertainment. Canada Post "set us on to this path" through an "absolute refusal" to negotiate, he said. However, the postal service will not comment on specific aspects of negotiations. "Canada Post negotiators are working hard to find common ground with CUPW and believe a quick resolution is in the
CHRIS SIMON chris.simon@simcoe.com There's a chance your snail mail may slow to a crawl soon. Canadian Union of Postal Workers national president Mike Palecek called negotiations with Canada Post "frustrating" July 13, and warned residents the postal service is forcing his bargaining units to seriously contemplate strike action. About 50,000 postal workers have been without a collective agreement since the winter. The sides have met to discuss a new deal more than 100 times. However, the union is setting a final strike vote for Sept. 9. "This round of bargaining is likely going to define the postal service going forward for a generation," Palecek said in an interview. "We're putting all kinds of issues on the
best interest of customers and employees," he said in an email. A number of issues built up over the last few years because the previous Conservative government refused to negotiate with the union, Palecek said. About 8,000 of the employees work in a rural or suburban setting, with the majority being women. They are paid about 30 per cent less than their 42,000 urban-area counterparts. The union is also pushing for the establishment of a Canada Post bank, electrification of the postal service's 13,000-vehicle fleet, and installation of electric vehicle-charging stations at post offices across the country. "This is an opportunity to bring in new services that will not only bring in revenue but that the public actually needs," Palecek said.

Renfrew KidsCorp changes to new EarlyOn TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com The name might be different, but the EarlyOn Renfrew Child and Family Centre is still focused on delivering fun programs for the zero-to-six crowd. The Ontario government has integrated four existing programs into one new program, Ontario Early Years Child and Family Centres, across all of Ontario. Last year, the government of the day announced a $140-million investment into Ontario's early years system, including the creation of 100 more EarlyOn centres. Among these changes locally, they also hired two new staff: Madison Given is the new program director, and Amy Raycroft is the new program co-ordinator. Given is originally from the Griffith area, has earned her early childhood education (ECE) and childand youth-worker diploma, and for the past seven years has been the assistant director at a child care centre in London but decid-
ed it was time to move home. Raycroft is from Renfrew and has recently graduated from the ECE program at Algonquin College. "It's the same fun place with new faces and a few changes with programming," said Given. So what does all the changes mean for the Renfrew location? This spring they added a Saturday-morning drop-in (taking a break for the summer and back in the fall), a new Pre-School Club (for three- to six-yearolds) on Tuesday mornings, and an expanded catchment area. "The Pre-School Club is a great program for any kids in kindergarten who are now out for the summer, and it gets kids ready for school," said Given. "We try and bring something new and exciting out for the kids each week, something for the kids to look forward to," added Raycroft. According to the Ministry of Education, the goal is to establish a provincial

Michelle Jaques is the vice-president of the EarlyOn board and has been impressed by the new staff. "They are awesome, and we have had a lot of great feedback," said Jaques.
"The programs are exciting with lots of new changes to the centre. As a board, we are really pleased at what they are doing and bringing to the centre." They hope that everyone will come and visit the centre. "We want to invite people to come and check it out, because it's a great resource for the community," said Jaques. MICHAEL BARBER COUNTY OF RENFREW When the models sashayed their way down the runway for Project Runway: Renfrew at the Bonnechere Bakery on May 29, not only were they having a blast sporting top fashion brands, they were also helping raise funds to support the Bonnechere Manor. It was a night of fashion, fun and fabulous food on Tuesday, May 29, marking the first Project Runway: Renfrew fashion fundraiser hosted and sponsored by the Bonnechere Bakery & Bistro. The event was fashioned by the Shoe Lounge and tickets sold out fast. Owner of the Shoe Lounge Jill Soucie, along with co-owners of the Bonnechere Bakery, Marie Schruder, Maureen Hicks and Angela Schruder conceived the idea and approached the Bonnechere Manor's fundraising co-ordinator Claire Ullrich in early April. The talented and generous bakery owners were quick to donate
the entire three-course meal for the evening, free of charge. Shocked and humbled by the generosity of these two establishments, Ullrich couldn't help but accept the offer immediately. "It was a no-brainer on our end at the manor. These two very prominent and successful businesses were offering to host a fabulous and unique event for the selfless purpose of raising money to enhance the quality of life of our residents," said Ullrich. Both businesses feel tied to long-term care, and recognize the importance of fundraising for such a worthy cause. "It was honour and privilege to be able to support our health care in our community. I am blessed to be part of such a caring and strong community that keeps giving. Thank you to all our health care providers that provide such excellent care!" said Soucie of the Shoe Lounge. Guests rolled up on the red carpet shortly before 6 p.m., salad was
set by 6:15 p.m., and the fashion show began shortly thereafter. The models were comprised of some of the Bonnechere Manor's own staff and volunteers, regulars at the Shoe Lounge and local fashionistas alike. Many of the evening's guests were also staff members of the Bonnechere Manor, including the
director of long-term care, Shelley Sheedy. "I think it is so important that, as staff, we support the fundraisers for our homes," said Sheedy. Guests received a glass of wine with their meal, sponsored by the Goulet family of Renfrew, as well as a chance to win multiple door prizes and silent auction items

THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Groves Park Lodge recognizes volunteers TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com Volunteers at Groves Park Lodge were lauded exceptional at a recent celebration. Staff also thanked them saying it would be impossible to do what they do without all of them. Program facilitator Jennifer Fraser welcomed everyone to the volunteer appreciation luncheon and presented the Resident Volunteer of the Year Award to Dolores Dagenais. Dagenais sold raffle tickets and raised a lot of money for the resident fund, which goes toward outings, Christmas presents and candlelight dinners. She also helped with the Tuck Shop and handing out calendars. "Dolly passed away before this
ceremony, but we decide that we still wanted to honour her because she more than deserved this award," said Fraser. "I was lucky enough to meet Dolly ... she was sweet, caring and had a wonderful sense of humour. I know she would be proud of this award." Bob Garneau received the Groves Park Lodge Volunteer of the Year Award and Shelley Palmer said he has many special qualities that have been a valuable addition to the home. "(He) is full of life, hard working, easy going, has a heart of gold and sympathetic to all," said Palmer. "He doesn't worry about what he needs to do but rather dives into the task at hand and works with us to get the job done."

2 lucky Dragonfly golfers snag holes-in-one BILL RAINBOTH Though Dragonfly is having a busier year than last year, mostly thanks to phenomenal weather, we had been trailing behind last year in one specific category - that of holes-in-one. This past week we are thrilled to share with you that Dragonfly had two holes in ones, and both of them were on our signature 18th hole. The first one was from 16 year old Ryan Robin, who was visiting us from Stittsville, and the second was from long time Dragonfly member, and early morning "dew sweeper" Murray Kohlsmith. Congrats to both of you! Now on to our regular report from league play: Our Friday ladies stroke play league saw great games from third place finisher Sandra Fleury, second place finisher Mary Lynn O'Brien, and this weeks' champ was Therese Williams. Therese is the wife of radio legend Doc, from the Chez 106 radio station in Ottawa. Doc is a well-known icon in the business, but thanks to his wife's fine play he may be better known for being the husband of Therese Williams.
Dragonfly/Submitted
Murray Kohlsmith had one of two recent holes-in-one at Dragonfly. This past Monday men's league saw the Monday Mashers edge the Weapons of Grass Destruction by less than 0.3 of a net stroke to claim victory. Closest to the pin winners were John
Grenfell on #5, and John Beardsley on #7. Subsequently, I will be changing my name to John with hopes of future golf success. TF Custom signs continued their great play to win A flight on Tuesday, yet again. It was the Yolkowski Hackers who had the round of the week, (a score of 29) to win B flight. Bill Debenham and Steve Williams were closest to the pin on #5 and #7 respectively. The Abandoned Cubs pawed their way to victory to win A flight on Wednesday, and Opeongo Bowldrome were throwing strikes to win B flight. Beatty Campbell and Serban Illiuta were the sharp shooters on this night, winning closest to the pin. Our Thursday ladies league completed week one of their two week cycle so there are no team results to pass along. However I can tell you that Amanda Cameron was closest to the pin on #5, Colleen Wall was closest on #7, Tracey MacKenzie was closest on #13, and while Megan Lewis did not have a hole in one on #18, she did have the best shot of the night in ladies league. Until next week, happy golfing!

The summer solstice was a swinging good time for the first ever Renfrew Longest Day of Golf in support of Hospice Renfrew. Six local golf courses participated and they raised approximately $5,000 for Hospice Renfrew. The concept was simple, golf as many holes as you can in one day to raise money for the cause. "It was a great day that I will never forget, said Christine Jarrett who helped organize the event. "I'm really pleased with the positive reception from all the clubs and the willingness to support it. The golfers did a wonderful job not only golfing but getting donations." At Madawaska Golf Course Victoria Munro and Maureen Dunnighan golfed 100 holes and they raised the most at $1,700 after golfing from 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Jake Begin and Josh Coleman golfed 125 holes and raised $856 at Whitetail Golf Course. At the Renfrew Golf Club Rob Warren (69-years-old and Carter Jarrett 13-years-old) played 108 holes after golfing from 7:15 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and raising $900. Garry Gourley, Ian Fabian, Chris O'Brien and Kean Hunt played 100 holes teeing off at 5 a.m. and finishing at 5 p.m., raising $1,000.Oaks of Cobden collect $400.Hospice Renfrew is a six-bed facility that serves all of Renfrew County with all programs and services free of charge, and is marking its tenth anniversary in 2018. "The day also gave us a chance to make people aware of Hospice Renfrew," said Jarrett who along with Jo-Anne Dowdall Brown toured all the participating courses on June 21. Jarrett hopes to make the fundraiser an annual event. "I want to build on it," said Jarrett. "The other golfers at the courses really got a kick out of keeping track of how many holes they played." Hospice volunteers sure do like to golf as one golf fundraiser comes to a close the next is teeing up. The 12th annual Aikenhead's Hospice Classic in support of Hospice Renfrew will be held on Friday, Aug. 17 at Renfrew Golf Club. The event starts at 11 a.m. with registration and a shotgun start at

Ottawa Valley student voices at the heart of the RCCDSB
The Renfrew County Catholic District School Board wants to hear students' perspectives about their education and have organized an opportunity for them to voice their opinions. Before the summer break, students in grades 6 to 12 from across the board gathered at Best Western Inn, Pembroke, and at Days Inn Renfrew to share their thoughts. "The goal was to bring students together and grant them an opportunity to discuss and share their voice regarding the four areas of the board's strategic plan," said Sandra Brannan, RCCDSB co-ordinator of safe schools. The four pillars of the board's strategic plan are: Dignity and Belonging, Achievement and Potential, Integrity and Witness, and Wholeness and Wellness. Both days began with some ice breaker and team-building activities to allow students to get acquainted. "Once the students were pumped and feeling comfortable with their groups, we tackled the first set of questions around the topic of 'Dignity and Belonging,' " noted Brannan. Each group was led by a senior student leader from high school. "As a leader, I guided students in my group and got them to share their opinions. I encouraged everyone to participate because everyone's opinion matters. We worked together to try to make our schools better," said Damian Wierzbicki, Grade 11, St. Joseph's High School, Renfrew. Throughout the day, students shared their ideas on a variety of topics including engaging tasks,

"We talked about what we would change, how we feel about learning, our feelings of belonging and inclusiveness, and using technology in the classroom." In between each series of questions related to the strategic plan, students engaged in small or whole-group team-building exercises and challenges. "It was amazing to see how
teams grew and worked together in such a short period of time," stated Brannan. Senior students recognized another benefit for the younger students who will soon join them at high school. "The activities allow younger kids to bond with older students so they're not intimidated by high school. High school is not scary!" said Jacob Zekron, Grade 10, St. Joseph's High School. They were two wonderful days concluded Brannan. "We are very fortunate to bring these students together and learn from them. Their insight and thoughtfulness was incredible."

A BERRY GOOD TIME
Dandelions had many useful purposes on the farm
Mother drew the line at Father's homemade wine though, Mary Cook recalls
MARY COOK Column Mother said it would be a frosty day in July before she would consider dandelions anything but weeds. When she arrived on the farm in the backwoods of Renfrew County, after living 18 years in New York City, and Father, and even Aunt Bertha on the farm beside us, told her that dandelions were good to eat, she vowed they would never find a place on our dinner table. Well, all that changed when Father decided he was dying for a good feed of boiled dandelions smothered in fresh butter. Mother said she would cook them, but he wasn't to expect her to eat any of them. My sister Audrey and I were sent out to the yard with the dish pan where there were more weeds than grass, and she showed me how we were just to take the leaves, and to try to take only those that were a good size. Well, with dandelions everywhere, it didn't take us long to fill the dish-
pan. Of course, Mother had to make sure that every last leaf was thoroughly washed, one by one. Then she wrapped them in a clean flour-bag tea towel, and squeezed the water out of them. That certainly cut down on the amount we would be having for supper. To be sure there would be at least one or two other vegetables on the table (as she said just in case no one but Father had a feed of the "weeds" as she called them), she cut up a head of cabbage and good number of carrots too. That all happened before Mother found out just how tasty a good feed of dandelions can be. Sopping with butter and salt and pepper, it didn't take long for the bowl to disappear. Now, Father liked just plain meals ... nothing fancy for him. Meat, potatoes, gravy, vegetables and pie was a good feed as far as he was concerned. And even though he had talked about a meal of dandelions often, he certainly didn't expect Mother to put them on the dinner table every few days! To add a few extras, to give them what Mother called a 'lift,' went over like a lead balloon. Mother added sour cream one day, and another time she put lemon juice on them. Father took one mouthful and headed for the back door to get rid of what was in his mouth. So it was plain dandelions ever after. Of course, the weed served another purpose as well. Father made dandelion wine, and we all stayed clear when he was in the middle of that job, let me tell you! All I knew was he didn't wash the leaves first, which was enough to turn Mother off at the outset. And

he didn't want any help either, so I never did learn exactly how it was made. When he had used up the few empty liquor bottles that once held what Uncle Herby had brought from Montreal, he poured it into KIK bottles, which he hoarded when we were lucky enough to have a bottle of pop from Briscoe's General Store. Mother wouldn't touch it knowing that the weeds came directly from the yard and right into the brew without the benefit of a drop of water. Father tried to assure her that once the brew turned into wine, all germs would be long gone, but that did little to sway Mother. Then there was the joy I got when my sister Audrey and I would sit out on the grass, and Audrey would take a stem of the dandelion ... the longer the better, and she would gently divide the stem in two, and each stem would be rolled down into a tight curl. They served absolutely no earthly purpose, but it was the joy of spending time alone with my much older sister, something we could do together. And I would sit with amazement that there was yet another use for the simple dandelion that grew in such great abundance in our very own backyard. Interested in an electronic version of Mary's books? McNab/Braeside couple set for musical adventure of a lifetime SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com "Leaving our house, leaving it all behind. Going to travel the world and see what we can find." Lyrics from the song Gypsies by Nic & I Music, couldn't ring truer for Nicole Papousek she's the 'Nic' - and Sky Papousek - he's the 'I' - that make up the McNab/Braeside-based duo that is set to host a CD release party July 21 in Renfrew. The married couple is fulfilling their call to flee the conventional. Having just released their first self-titled album, they plan to eventually take leave from their house, regular life, and es-
tablished careers. The song continues: "Got a 40-foot bus and a plan, going to travel all across this great land. Just me, her and the dogs, couple of guitars and all of our songs." And that's just what they're going to do. Cover art for the album is 'The Blues Bird,' a 20-year-old Blue Bird coach-bus that Sky, 32, and Nikki, 29, have converted into a fully functional, allseason, touring home. "Sky and Nikki are part of growing number of people today questioning and redefining living in the western world. Minimal living is what Sky has adapted with bus life. Nicole, a nurse, and Sky, a mechanic, are aiming to hit the road in spring 2019. "Hopefully our first trip will be to Nashville," says Nicole. Both Papouseks come from musical families. Sky's mother, Debbie, a pianist, ensured Sky was in piano lessons until he was 12," says the band biography. Having less than two months left of our season does not leave time to slack around at the McDougall Mill Museum. We are constantly keeping busy trying to bring new ideas and activities for our guests to do during their visit. New to the museum this summer is our Photo Parlour! For $10 you can dress up in our variety of clothes, pose with your friends and/ or family, the staff will take your photo and print it off for you to take home. The Photo Parlour is one of our fundraisers that will last throughout the summer, the proceeds from the Photo Parlour go toward helping with the costs of preserving the artifacts in the museum. Another way to help support the museum this summer is by attending the Build Your Own Terrarium night on July 26, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. The cost of the event is $50, which includes everything you will need to build your own personal terrarium. The event is being held at the Days Inn Renfrew. Margi's menu will be available prior to and throughout the night. Come and enjoy a fun-filled night with us. Tickets are available for sale at the Flower Factory and at the museum, located at 65 Arthur Ave., next to the Swinging Bridge. Looking for something fun and educational for the kids this summer? The McDougall Mill Museum is holding our Kids Week from July 23 to the 27. We will have a variety of crafts and activities for children to participate in while visiting the museum. On July 25, the McDougall Mill Museum is hosting the Métis Nation of Ontario's Summer Youth Program from 1:30 until 4:30 p.m. for an afternoon filled with traditional Métis games, jigging and beading. Although the event is being held during Kids Week, all ages are welcome to join us. The museum is open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. until Labour Day weekend. Come and visit before the season is over, you will not regret it! – Logan Wright is a summer student at the McDougall Mill Museum.
