SHERRY HAAIMA sherr y.haaima@metroland.com Emergency officials made quick work of a July 17 bush fire in Greater Madawaska. Members of the Greater Madawaska Fire Department were able to leave the scene near Calabogie just after 2 p.m. Ministry of Natural Resources officials continued to fight the blaze, announcing the next day that the fire was under control. Capt. Leon Mulvihill said they got the call around 11:15 a.m. July 17 after someone reported seeing smoke in the wooded area between Calabogie Peaks and Ferguson Lake. Firefighters explored the area to try and pinpoint where the fire was located and contacted Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) See OFFICIALS, page 2

FIRE BLACKENS 2 ACRES NEAR ARNPRIOR JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Sunday's rainfall may have provided some relief for parched gardens and lawns, but it hasn't appreciably reduced the risk of bush and grass fires in the Upper Ottawa Valley. A fire that blackened about two acres at a farm on Nieman Drive southwest of Arnprior on the afternoon of Friday, July 20 showed just how quickly a grass fire can spread in the tinder dry fields. McNab/Braeside firefighters from all three of the township's stations rushed to the farm just off Russett Drive about 4 p.m. Fire chief Dave Hartwick confirmed the blaze started in a hay baler and spread to the tractor. By the time firefighters had extinguished the fire, it grown to cover two acres in the hay field. No one was injured in the fire, although Hartwick noted a few firefighters were checked by paramedics because of the intense heat. The firefighters spent about three hours dousing the hot spots in the 30-plus-degree temperatures. McNab/Braeside firefighters attended two other fires in the township Friday, a trailer fire in White Lake and a car fire in a field off Campbell Drive.
Hartwick said on Sunday that the bush and fields are still extremely dry, as "the rain did not help today." He emphasized that the fire ban on all open air burning (including campfires) in the township, declared July 5, remains in effect. Fire permits issued earlier are not valid in the ban period and no new permits are currently being approved. McNab/Braeside residents can call 613-701-6148 for updates. A Level 2 Fire Ban is in place all across the Ottawa Valley. A Nieman Road resident, who dropped by Friday's fire to see if neighbours could do anything to help, said she had seen, to her disgust, a motorist recently throw a cigarette butt from his car window. "Please don't throw cigarette butts out the window," urged Hartwick. He also asked residents to make sure they have working smoke alarms and a home escape plan. About the same time as the Neiman Drive fire, Whitewater Region firefighters were called to a brush fire on Magnesium Road. There are three major forest fires burning in the north end of Renfrew County, one of which closed Highway 17 temporarily Friday afternoon and again Saturday. Fire crews are also fighting three blazes in Algonquin Park.
MUNICIPAL ELECTION

BENNETT CHALLENGES KINGSBURY FOR HORTON MAYOR'S CHAIR SHERRY HAAIMA sherr y.haaima@ metroland.com All four area mayors have announced they will be seeing re-election. Renfrew Mayor Don Eady and Admaston/Bromley Mayor Michael Donohue are the latest to announce they will be running again this fall. The current council has "set a good direction for the town," said Eady, who is seeking a second term as mayor. "We've started climbing up the ladder ... but it's impor-
tant we keeping climbing." He said he has a number of irons in the fire "and I'd like to see them through." Eady said he has put health concerns behind him and currently "my health is A-1. I can easily do the job for the next four years." He said this will be his last campaign, at least for mayor. "Our town council has worked hard over the past four years and has accomplished a lot, but there is more to be done, work that I want to see completed," he said in a July 19 press release. "The Town of Renfrew has a promising future - one that requires careful planning and experienced leadership." Eady owned a successful business in Renfrew for 25 years prior to running for town council four years ago. Previously, he served on Horton Township council for 14
years, the last four as mayor. "In announcing my candidacy for mayor, my continued commitment is to meet the needs of our residents and our business community by making responsible financial decisions and providing leadership based on co-operation, discussions and communications," said Eady. The deadline for candidates to sign up for the Oct. 22 municipal election is this Friday, July 27 at 2 p.m. Callum Scott is the only other candidate signed up so far to seek the mayor's chair in Renfrew. Reeve Peter Emon is seeking re-election and council candidates so far include existing councillors Andrew Evans and Kate Windle, as well as former members Clint McWhirter and Jim Miller. Willy needs our help. When we rescued him in 2016 he was in bad shape. His ears were bleeding, his fur was falling out and he could hardly walk. We immediately took him to the animal hospital where it was discovered that Willy has severe allergies environmental and food which cause chronic infections in his ears. The only long term relief Willy will get from the ear infections is to have his inner canals removed. This will leave him almost deaf, but at least he will no longer suffer. We are appealing for funds to help with Willy’s surgery. You can donate to our account at Canada Helps or by sending an etransfer to valleyanimalrescue@hotmail.com THANK YOU! ever, attendance slipped from 7,600 when held in June in its first year to around 3,000 this year when the heat and other activities had an effect. Renfrew Reeve Peter Emon said organizers will hold a debriefing this week to discuss how best to continue with the event. "All the pieces are there. We just have to build the audience," he said. Dredhart said he expects the interest to continue to grow to the point when thousands of forestry officials from all over the world will attend. "It takes time to get these things get established, but interest eventually begins to snowball," he said at Saw Tech's opening July 20. "We're building it to be an international event or at least a North American event." He said partnering with the Town of Renfrew has allowed for "significant additions" to the expo with a wider focus and more attractions such as the food trucks this year. "We look forward to a long relationship with the town," he said. If the town doubles the concrete pads at Ma-Te-Way as proposed, it will accommodate an even larger sales area and room for more wood artisans, he noted. Dredhart would also like to add a loggers' competition to the event next year. A log-loading checkerboard contest with machine operators moving stump logs around the board is entertaining for both participants and the audience, he said. He said he would also like to see the number of area mills participating double or even triple next year. It's important to educate the people of Renfrew County as to the importance forestry plays in the area's economy and the many innovative ways mills are using wood, he said. Mills are turning more and more to value-added products such as flooring as they adapt to new economic realities, he explained. He added that it is also important for shows such as this to educate young people that the industry has a future and there are careers available that can keep them in the area. Dredhart explained that Renfrew is an ideal location for the show, being the gateway to the Upper Ottawa Valley and situated so close to Quebec and a reasonable distance to the U.S. At Saw Tech's official opening Friday, emcee Emon noted that the event has become a celebration of rural living with the participation of Renfrew recreation, ATVers, farmers, cottage industries, food trucks and the Renfrew Home of the NHA/ NHL Committee. He announced that Renfrew Minor Ball will receive $3,000 for their help at the event and some of the admission fee would be donated to other local community groups Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant told the opening ceremony that it is fitting to hold Saw Tech in the Renfrew area with its rich heritage in logging and being home to all of the "wonderful people who worked in forestry over the
years." Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski said it is valuable to promote awareness of an industry that is so important both in Renfrew County and across the province Emon noted that the forest industry in central and eastern Ontario generates $573 million annually. There are more than 1,000 forest companies in Renfrew County providing and supporting nearly 2,100 direct and 2,350 indirect jobs, he added. Also welcoming attendees at the opening were Pikwakanagan Nation representative Coun. Ron Bernard, Renfrew Mayor Don Eady and County of Renfrew Warden Jennifer Murphy, For more information about the expo, visit sawtechlogexpo.com.

ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE Renfrew residents continue to be bedevilled by a series of home and vehicle break-ins this summer. Renfrew OPP report at least three more homes, several vehicles, a warehouse and the LCBO store were victimized in Renfrew in mid-July. Wedding rings were the main items stolen in two break-ins. Jewelry, including several gold wedding bands, were stolen from a Barr Street home between July 5 and 20. The homeowners, who were in and out of the home during that time, noticed an open screen on a back window and a shoe print on a couch. OPP Const. Kirk Cullen is leading the investigation. A man's wedding ring was taken when a thief forced open a back door to a home on Ross Street on Friday, July 20. The robber also stole cash, a Bose wireless speaker, laptop and iPhone. OPP Const. Matt McLaren is investigating. OPP are investigating the theft of a quantity of prescription medication from a home on Frank Dench Street. The home was entered sometime on the July 14-16 weekend. A screen was removed and a door unlocked to gain access. OPP Const. Jeff Bookholt is leading the investigation and has a suspect. A warehouse on Argyle Street was broken into sometime prior to Tuesday, July 17. OPP report the building has been a frequent target for vandals.
OPP Const. Lindsey Moore is leading the investigation. Police are investigating the theft of liquor from the Renfrew and Arnprior LCBO stores on Monday, July 16 and the theft of the Arnprior Dairy Queen sign overnight on July 15-16. OPP also report several thefts from vehicles in Renfrew last week. Police encourage motorists to remove valuables from their cars or trucks overnight, and to lock their vehicle when away from them. "Thieves are generally opportunists and target easy-to-access valuables," note OPP. "If your vehicle is locked, and they can't see anything of value they will usually move on. Don't be an easy target, Lock it or lose it!"
VANDALISM OPP report that on Saturday, July 21 between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., a vehicle was vandalized while in the parking lot in front of Giant Tiger in Renfrew. The vehicle was a red 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup. The valve stems were pulled out of the tires and the tires were flat when the owner returned. OPP Const. Kyle Cullen investigated. On Sunday, July 22 at about 6:20 p.m., Arnprior OPP officers were alerted that six young people at the fairgrounds were damaging property. When officers arrived they found and detained two youths, who admitted they were responsible. The other four youths were also
identified. The six will be dealt with through the Extra Judicial Measures program. OPP Const. Kayla Couture led the investigation
TRAFFIC CHARGES On Sunday, July 22 at 12:20 a.m., Renfrew OPP officers were conducting RIDE spot checks on Calabogie Road when they stopped a male driver suspected of drinking. The man was arrested for impaired driving and taken to the detachment for a breathalyzer test. Nicholas Monsour, 23, of Ottawa was charged with impaired driving and driving over 80 mgs. He was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on Aug. 15. A passenger in the vehicle, Andrew Benjamin, 35, of Ottawa was ticketed for having open alcohol in a public place. OPP Const. Jason Golds led the investigation. On Thursday, July 19 at about 2:47 p.m., OPP Sgt. Derek McLeod was patrolling on Highway 17 in Horton when he observed traffic swerving to avoid a driver passing unsafely. The driver was also speeding in excess of 50 km/h above the posted 90 km/h limit. As a result Darrell Thomas, 57, of Elizabethtown Township was charged with stunt driving and passing when unsafe to do so. His licence was suspended for seven days, his vehicle was impounded for seven days and he was issued a summons to appear in traffic court in Renfrew on Aug. 17.

THE HEAT IS ON While finally this week's forecast looks like we might see some reprieve from the hot, dry conditions that have been plaguing our region for weeks, it's important we remain vigilant and keep in mind the very wise warnings coming from emergency officials across the Valley. Weeks of little to no rain and the hot, sunny weather have led to tinder-dry conditions. Fire bans are in place in a number of municipalities. Whether it's last week's bush fire in Calabogie, field fire in McNab/Braeside or the major forest fire between Deep River and Mattawa that closed Highway 17 several times, firefighters and other emergency personnel have been working around the clock. And what they need, along with just plain public common sense, is for us to be careful and safe and ensure we prevent fires, as well as not hamper their efforts. The Arnprior Fire Department issued a reminder about the increased potential for fires to start and grow rapidly, telling residents it's imperative that smoking materials be discarded safely. Discarding cigarette butts in planter boxes or off the side of your deck can result in a large, destructive fire not only on your property but on your neighbours' properties as well. McNab/Braeside issued an online reminder about public behaviour around water bombers, often used by Ministry of Natural Resources officials to fight forest fires. "When water bombers approach a lake, move close to the shore so the water bombers can perform their scoop safely," said the message. "A water bomber will not scoop from a lake if encroaching watercraft pose a safety hazard." Greater Madawaska Fire Department's warnings indicated a considerable amount of rain is required to improve the dry conditions. Not only is no burning permitted, including campfires, candles or any other open flames, conditions are so extreme that caution should be exercised even while barbecuing. Fort McMurray, Alta., is still rebuilding two years after its devastating wildfires and July 7 marked the one-year anniversary of the start of the British Columbia wildfires. It's much easier to focus on preventing massive wildfires than to fight them and work for years to rebuild and restore. When a wildfire does occur, FirstOnSite Restoration, a company that has been on the front lines of some of the country's biggest fires, has these tips for homeowners: Create a 10-metre defensible space around your property; make your roof fire-resistant and clear away gutter debris; keep embers out; remove close-by coniferous trees; prune your trees; keep your lawn mowed; create a "bug-out" bag and an action/evacuation plan; find a "fire-resistant zone" near your home; work with your neighbours; and ensure you have adequate insurance coverage Finally, we are eternally grateful to those who have been working so hard these past few weeks in these extreme conditions. Hats off to the many emergency officials across our region who day after day put their lives on the line to keep us safe. To check on the current fire situation, visit Ontario.ca/ forestfires.

WHO WE ARE LETTERS & COMMENTARY ORGAN DONOR REGISTRY TOPS 4 MILLION To the editor: Trillium Gift of Life Network, Ontario's government agency responsible for organ and tissue donation and transplantation, announced a milestone July 10: four million Ontarians have registered their consent to donate. Ontario reached this achievement fittingly during BeADonor Month in April - a month devoted to celebrating and raising awareness for organ and tissue donation. This past BeADonor Month was incredibly successful, with a 24 per cent increase in new registrations over an average month in 2017. In large part, this was owing to Ontario's overwhelming response to the Humboldt, Saskatchewan tragedy and Logan Boulet's life-saving gift. Moved and inspired by his generous act, thousands of Ontarians became registered donors. Renfrew has made considerable contributions in increasing the provincial
registration rate. In fact, it is among the top 10 per cent most improved communities. Since 2012, Renfrew's registration rate has risen from 15 per cent to 35 per cent today. Donor registration has been proven to save lives. Families overwhelmingly honour their loved ones' decision to donate organs and tissue at end of life, when they are registered. In the absence of registration, families consent to organ donation only half of the time. This milestone is also a testament to the strong partnership between Trillium Gift of Life Network and ServiceOntario. Ontarians are offered the opportunity to register consent to donate when renewing a health card or driver's licence. This interaction is fundamental to the donation system because being asked by front-line staff to register consent accounts for 90 per cent of new donor registrations. While the vast majority of Ontarians support organ and tissue donation, only one in three have registered their consent to do-
nate. Northern Ontario has set the bar with 49 per cent of the eligible population registered. Top-ranked communities include North Bay (56 per cent), Parry Sound (55 per cent) and Sudbury (54 per cent). Central Ontario, including Toronto (23 per cent), Mississauga (21 per cent) and Brampton (18 per cent), falls below the provincial average with only 25 per cent registered. Ontarians are encouraged to join the four million individuals already registered for organ and tissue donation by visiting www.beadonor.ca. Registration rates by community are available at www.beadonor.ca/scoreboard. Trillium Gift of Life Network is a not-for-profit agency of the Government of Ontario responsible for planning, promoting, coordinating and supporting organ and tissue donation for transplantation across Ontario and improving the system so that more lives can be saved.

MICHAEL RUNTZ WRITES ABOUT SUMMER WILDFLOWERS MICHAEL RUNTZ Column
Each season can be characterized by an array of natural history highlights. Winter brings chattering, seed-eating finches and owls from the north. Fall arrives with an explosion of colour and the moans of desiring moose. Spring is alive with returning birds and a flourish of wildflowers in leafless woods. So what defines summer? Summer's heat, fortunately usually much less extreme than this year's pond-drying, plant-killing inferno, inspires squadrons of dragonflies to pa-

Summer also brings wildflowers that, unlike the spring ephemeras that hurriedly blanket hardwood
hillsides before tree leaves open overhead, lazily frequent meadows where shade is never a concern. There, naturalized immigrants like chicory, Queen Anne's Lace, and viper's bugloss self-heal add colour and form to the open land. Mixed among them are native wildflowers such as spreading dogbane and black-eyed Susan. Whether native or alien, most wildflowers depend on insects to satisfy their sexual needs. Competition for pollinators is high with each species striving to attract surrogate lovers through vibrant colours, irresistible perfumes, and sweet enticements. Some wildflowers appeal to a select few insects; bottle gentians are pollinated almost exclusively by bumblebees. Other wildflowers attract a diversity of insects ranging in size from tiny wasps to giant butterflies. Common milkweed is one of the latter. Even to our comparatively dead-

ened discrimination of smell, the scent emanating from a large milkweed patch is near intoxicating. Insects of all type are drawn to milkweeds not only for their sweet scents. Inside the five cups adorning each bloom is delicious amino acid-rich nectar. Because the nectar rests in shallow cups a diversity of mouthpart types can access it. Beetles with short tongues can enjoy it as easily as butterflies with garden-hose proboscises. But the milkweed offerings come with a price. The cups are slippery so an insect visitor has to keep positioning its legs to get a better foothold as it drinks. Between the nectar cups
bered legs still laden with their pollen cargo; there is severe penalty for those who come to drink the milkweed's nectar but fail to pay the price of admission. Visiting a common milkweed is like going to a Cineplex; action abounds at every blossom. But please be aware of the X rating for sexual content and violence! The Nature email is mruntz@start.ca

are situated anther pouches with slits into which a visitor's legs inevitably slide. At the bottom lie paired pollen sacs that to me resemble saddlebags in western movies. When a foot touches the strap of the sacs, it becomes ensnared. It takes considerable strength to pull a burdened leg free, which large bees do rather easily. When a saddlebag-bearing foot slips into an anther pouch that lacks pollen sacs, the saddlebag slips off and pollination is achieved. The system works well as long as the insect has the strength to pull free its saddled leg. When one examines the blooms on a milkweed plant, one soon finds victims, some dead, others vainly struggling to free themselves, that did not. One also finds dismem-

It has been five years since the Renfrew Golden Age Activity Centre opened its doors to the senior community from the Town of Renfrew and surrounding communities. Staff, volunteers, dignitaries and members celebrated with a butterfly release and other activities on Friday, July 6.Over the years it has developed and grown to have a membership of over 300. This year has been a very
special one as the centre became one of only 40 new Seniors Active Living Centres across Ontario funded by the Ministry of Senior Affairs. Celebrating the anniversary were members from Renfrew town council: councillors Andrew Evans and Tom Sidney, the mayor of Horton Bob Kingsbury, Deputy Mayor Bob Johnston and Coun. David Bennet wearing two hats as he is also president of Renfrew and Area Seniors
Home Support of which the centre is a program. Greetings and congratulations were brought from Mayor Kingsbury, Coun. Evans and Admaston/Bromley Mayor Michael Donohue as well as Bennett and the Golden Age Activity Centre advisory committee chair Nellie Kingsbury. Administrator/ programmer Fay O'Reilly thanked all supporters of the centre and those present were invited to celebrate by
releasing painted lady butterflies as a sign of hope for the next years. A delicious lunch was provided by members Janet and Barry Brush of Bide-A-While B&B and a beautiful cake donated by Metro was enjoyed by all. The Kohlsmiths and Friends entertained for the afternoon of fun, dancing and laughter. The centre is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for those younger seniors aged 50 and over.

ONTARIO CLEAN WATER AGENCY EDUCATION PROGRAM INSPIRES RENFREW STUDENTS What is the value of water? Grade 8 students at St. Joseph's High School in Renfrew know. Staff from the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) - which operates the Town of Renfrew's water and wastewater facilities visited St. Joe's this past school year to teach students all about water. The OCWA OneWater Education Program engages Grade 8 students through hands-on activities and interaction with local water operators who provide the community with its drinking water and wastewater treatment. On June 19, OCWA operator Steve McIntyre returned to the school to present a OneWater participation plaque to the students.
Emma Ryan of Jag Media/Submitted On June 19 Grade 8 students at St. Joeseph's Catholic High School received an Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) OneWater participation plaque, on hand for the presentation are teacher Kip Mulvihill, Kaitlyn Dupuis, Kelttie Moore, Gabrielle McNulty, Peyton Gray, Deakon Flowers, Ethan Brownlee, Sam Labossiere, Wille Coyne. And Ashton Sigouin receives plaque from Steve McIntyre (OCWA Instructor) Steve and OCWA colleague Scott Quackenbush delivered the program back in January, covering a range of topics including the water cycle, the earth's water supply, current water issues and protection of water sources. They also focused
on the local water and wastewater systems - something that makes the program unique. "I like the OneWater program because it brings science into real life and shows students how they can be good stewards of our water
here in Renfrew," said Grade 8 teacher Kip Mulvihill. "They were shocked to realize how many misconceptions they had about water use and treatment." The OCWA OneWater Education Program was born in 2014 out of a desire to strengthen and formalize OCWA's commitment to water literacy and to the communities they serve. Working with a team of educators and OCWA operators from across Ontario, OCWA developed materials for the Grade 8 level, where teachers are required to educate students on water issues as part of the established Ministry of Education science curriculum. In partnership with client communities, OCWA has delivered the OneWater Education Program to more than 44 schools and 2,000 students across the province since 2014. JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com This Sunday's Herbfest at the Waba Cottage and Gardens in White Lake will have a greater Renfrew county flavour as the event has hooked up with Taste of the Valley. Admission is free to the celebration of herbs and healthy living scheduled for Sunday, July 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It's the third time the festival is being held in McNab/Braeside after 20 years in the Almonte area, but it's the first time it has become a Taste of the Valley event. Taste of the Valley with its promotion of local food producers and artisans fits in well with the Herbfest's focus on healthy lifestyle, said McNab/Braeside recreation director Geoff Patterson. "It gives us a different slant ... with new networking opportunities and more involvement from other spots in the Valley. It's a real feather in our cap." He said the addition of Renfrew County exhibitors such as St. Andrew's Herb Farm in Combermere will give Herbfest a wider appeal. The HerbfestTaste of the Valley partnership capitalizes on the trend toward healthier living, so is "a win-win for both McNab-Braeside and Renfrew County." He said the event has been growing slowly in its new location, attracting 600 people in 2016 and about 800 last year. Considering Taste of the Valley events have drawn as many as 2,000 attendees, Herbfest organizers anticipate reaching the 1,000 mark
this year, he noted. Patterson said having Herbfest Taste of the Valley at Waba promotes awareness of the museum and gardens. Special interactive heritage presentations by staff and pontoon boat tours on the lake throughout the day will give visitors a taste of how wide a range of amenities are available in the area, he explained. As well as a variety of herb and artisan vendors and displays, the festival will include children's activities, music and garden tours. Last year there were attendees from as far away as Europe and many from the United States. Patterson noted that volunteers have made a "key contribution" to the festival by weeding and sprucing up the grounds. McNab/Braeside firefighters have been working on a memorial garden near the entrance, he added. "They'll have it looking like a million bucks by Sunday," he promised. Patterson is optimistic the weather will co-operate Sunday. Herbfest founder Gerry Bedard chose the last Sunday in July for the festival when his scientific research indicated it has the best chance of sunny weather of any weekend in the year. That has been the case for 20 of 22 Herbfests, noted Patterson. Herbfest kicks off the Taste in the Valley series, which includes events in Barry's Bay Aug. 17, Renfrew Sept. 22, Deep River Sept. 29, downtown Arnprior Sept. 30 and Cobden Oct. 13.

RANGERS, VOLUNTEERS TO WORK ON TRAILS JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com
insideottawavalley.com
A call has gone out for volunteers to help Ontario Parks officials work on trails at a "gem" of a provincial park in McNab/Braeside this Friday, July 27. Park rangers will be on site at Alexander Stewart Provincial Park starting at 9 a.m. Volunteers are welcome to drop by at any time throughout the day to help with the rehabilitation of trails in the park bounded by Mill Ridge and Maple Bend roads and Russett Drive just east of the township office. McNab/Braeside Coun. Heather Lang explained that the effort is aimed at making the "lit-
tle gem" of a park more userfriendly to residents and students from nearby McNab Public School. Local firm Elm Enterprises has donated two tandem loads of gravel, which will be spread on the low spots on the trails, especially in the marshy area off Maple Bend Road. The organizers are also looking for donations of cedar logs and wood chips for the effort. Anyone volunteering to help Friday is asked to bring equipment such as shovels or wheel barrows and wear safety boots and bright clothing. The work party will begin near the corner of Russett Drive and Mill Ridge Road.

Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. CRIME
RENFREW COUNTY GRAPPLES WITH DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
Tiffany Lepack/Metroland Const. Janice Sawbridge from the Renfrew Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police holds up place cards with contact information for those in need of help in an abusive situation. that can be traumatized even just observing a lot of yelling, I encourage you to report that to the police," said Sawbridge. If victims are fearful for their safety: Call the police (911). If they are not comfortable with calling the police at least reach out to someone such as a counsellor at Bernadette McCann women's shelter. Even though the physical building is in Pembroke it services all of Renfrew County and is available 24/7 It is a 16-bed emergency shortterm shelter for women and children who are leaving an abusive relationship. It also offers a crisis/support line that can be reached 24/7: 1-800-267-4930. In Arnprior/Renfrew, community support and outreach services can be reached by calling 1-888-281-7377. Victims can also reach out to a regional assault care specialist at the hospital, their family doctor or the women's sexual assault centre, 24-7. "They can offer support and
guidance, as long as the victims are reaching out to somebody if they are ready to do that, I encourage them," said Sawbridge. "If they are fearful for safety, please call the police." Renfrew County Victim Services responds to calls with the police for domestic disturbances. "We provide immediate crisis support to all victims of domestic violence," said Faye Cassista, acting executive director with victim services. "We offer a specialized program to offer immediate funds for certain situations." She feels victim services is an important resource for the community. "The victims have to know there is support here and the community cares and we are here for them no matter what they deicide to do," said Cassista. "If they go back we want to ensure they are safe in there." According to Sawbridge, high call volume is not just isolated to the rural areas. "It happens everywhere, cit-
ies, towns, remote, rural areas, it is everywhere," said Sawbridge. However, she notes there are special challenges for those who live in rural areas. "In accessing services, sometimes there is more poverty in rural areas. There may only be one vehicle, and if one of the partners takes the vehicle to work then the other person is almost stranded and has no way to drive to a hospital or a friend's house to seek support," said Sawbridge. "Again that is why I encourage people to make that phone call to Bernadette McCann House or one of the other available agencies." Sawbridge is in her 30th year with the OPP and says the issue of domestic violence has stayed the same over the years. A victim will be abused at least nine times before they reach out for help. "I think when they are really truly afraid that they are going to be seriously hurt that's when they make a call," said Sawbridge. "And there is a stigma to reporting it, that's part of the rea-
insideottawavalley.com
They are the stats no one wants to talk about. A 2016 report put out by the Canadian government focuses in on the issue. Family violence: How big is the problem in Canada? Of all reported violent crime in 2016, more than one quarter resulted from family violence and almost 67 per cent of family violence victims were women and girls. Women are victims of intimate partner violence more often and more severely than men: 79 per cent of reported intimate partner violence is against women. In Arnprior and Renfrew area the Renfrew detachment of the OPP investigated 476 domestic dispute calls in 2016, 439 calls in 2017 and for the first six months of 2018, 207 calls were investigated. These calls are defined as an incident of violence or the threat of violence in a partnership that includes intimacy, dating or a previous relationship. Const. Janice Sawbridge, community safety office for the Renfrew detachment, says even though there is a slight decrease, the numbers are high and concerning. It still breaks down to more than one a day. "That number does concern us. Even if it was a much lower number it would still concern us because domestic violence can very quickly escalate into a very serious incident. We are always concerned by the numbers and 439 is definitely a very high number for an entire year," said Sawbridge. The OPP receives calls from victims, people who witness assaults and/or those concerned about loved ones or acquaintances. "I encourage people to listen to their gut. If your gut says this is more than just an argument - it seems to be getting out of control and if you are concerned with the safety of someone involved or if there are children in the home
son why some people don't report." She says there are lots of complex reasons why victims don't seek help. "Victims still believe it's their fault, they provoked the incident of violence," said Sawbridge. "We will just keep working to educate people, especially young people (in schools)." The issue has seemed to hit home in Renfrew County since the trial and conviction of Basil Borutski, who was found guilty in December 2017 of two counts of first degree murder and one count of second-degree murder in Wilno. Sawbridge didn't discuss the case specifically but admitted one thing. "There was definitely a lot of awareness that came about as a result of that case." It's a tough situation when the police receive a domestic disturbance call. "It's never easy when we get a call like that because it is very volatile and unpredictable," said Sawbridge. "We treat it very seriously and our No. 1 job is to ensure the safety of everyone when we arrive at the scene and determine what has happened. If we have grounds to believe a criminal offence occurred, whether that is assault, choked, threatened, property damage, we must lay a charge. No warnings are issued, we lay a charge." Of the instances investigated, more than 50 per cent of the time there are no charges laid. "And that's because no criminal offence has occurred, so generally it's just an argument that one person felt was getting out of control or someone not involved heard the argument and was concerned enough to call the police or someone has made an allegation but we don't have the grounds to lay the charge." She stresses one key message. "Seek help, that's the No. 1 thing I want them to do," said Sawbridge. "Talk to a friend, or family member, or doctor or police."

CARD OF THANKS
From the family of Arthur Joseph Charbonneau We would like to express our thanks to our family, friends, and neighbours for the support and condolences we have received upon the passing of Art, husband, father, grampa and great grampa Art. Please accept our heartfelt thanks for the many expressions of sympathy, cards of condolence and charitable donations made in Art’s memory. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Jennifer Becker, doctors, nurses and staff of the hospital, whose care and compassion for Art was unwavering. We are truly grateful for the care provided by the Assisted Living Program. Kind, caring, and dedicated, only begin to describe these very special individuals. A special thank you to Anna, Susie, Margaret Ann, Cindy, Nancy, Joan and Debbie for your love and care. Together your help made it possible for Art to remain at home with Noreen, where he wanted to be. You were our aides, became our friends and we are forever indebted to you. To, Reverend Andrew Love our heartfelt appreciation for your visits, thoughtfulness, comforting words, guidance, and a truly beautiful and inspirational service. Thank you to the ladies of the UCW, Grace St Andrews United Church for providing friends and family with the delicious luncheon following the service. Our sincere thank you to Helen Black, organist, Mavis Lesway, Catherine Matheson and Katie McLachlan for the beautiful and meaningful music, our sincere thank you. To, the Arnprior Legion, Branch 174, for providing your military respects with a service on Monday. To, Lisa Smith and the staff of Boyce Funeral Home, our heartfelt appreciation for your support, compassion and professional guidance. Perhaps you sent a lovely card, Or sat quietly in a chair. Perhaps you sent a floral piece, If so we saw it there. Perhaps you spoke the kindest words, As any friend could say. Perhaps you were not there at all, Just thought of us that day. Whatever you did to console our hearts, We thank you so much what ever the part. It is so very hard to say goodbye to those we love. We cherish his love and hold his memory close within our hearts.

A great way to start your day!
Never ever, did I say to Mother, "I'm bored, and there's nothing to do" without her casting her eyes toward the back wall cupboard. All she had to do was look at it, and I knew what was in store for me. Only too well I knew she would say: "Get the string and knit a dishcloth." How I hated knitting dishcloths! First of all, I couldn't knit well. Not like my sister Audrey who could whip up a dishcloth in the blink of an eye, or knit a pair of socks in a couple of evenings. For me, the job of knitting a dishcloth was one I loathed, so I thought long and hard before I ever said to Mother I was bored and there was nothing to do! If my sister was too busy to play with me, or I couldn't talk my friend Velma into coming over to play, or it was too hot, or for some other reason, I was bored and couldn't think of a thing to do, the result of complaining to Mother was far worse than sitting in the swing in the grape arbour twiddling my thumbs. So that meant I had to dream up something in a hurry, or Mother would go to the cupboard for me and haul down the ball of string and the knitting needles. Sometimes I would drag all my dolls out to the grape arbour, and set
them down in rows and pretend I was Miss Crosby from the Northcote School. Of course, one had to be bad Marguirite, and I wasn't above taking my ruler and slapping the little hand on the doll, which gave me great satisfaction. But talking to dolls who didn't answer me soon caused me to lose interest in playing school. So, unfortunately, I tired of pretending the grape arbour was a school, and I would gather up my dolls and head back into the house, being awfully careful not to let out a big sigh passing Mother because of the threat of her curing me of my boredom! Playing jacks on the cement at the pump wasn't nearly as much fun playing alone, as it would be with a friend, but that helped fill in the time for a bit. Then the day I lost the little red ball down the pump hole made me especially careful, and leery about the whole idea of going out and spending a bit of time playing jacks at the pump. I could always go find my pet chicken, but she did little to amuse me. She was an odd one all right. There wasn't a feather on her body ... as bald as a badger she was. My brother Emerson said she was a freak, but that made me love her more dearly. As soon as I picked her up, she would fall dead asleep, so other than stroke her warm, bare body, there wasn't much fun there. My sister Audrey and I often lay out on the grass when there were soft tufts of clouds in the sky and we would try to figure out what shape they were, or what they would turn into as they floated above us. Audrey was much smarter than I was at it though,
so watching clouds alone held no interest for me at all. And then there was Scruff the old barn cat. She'd be good for a spell of something to do, but she was a cagey one all right, and ever since I dressed her up in some of my dolls' clothes, and scared the life out of her, she ran and hid when she saw me coming. Soon I would feel sorry for myself. There was Velma with a house full of sisters and brothers ... no time for her to be bored. And my other little friend Joyce ... she had a playhouse! Imagine! A playhouse! If I had one of those, I could spend hours pretending to bake cakes or sitting in the tiny little chair rocking my dolls to sleep. Just thinking of either Joyce or Velma only added to my misery. That's when I would drag myself back into the kitchen. And it didn't take Mother all day to figure out I was bored, and couldn't find anything to help pass away the afternoon. All she had to do was look at me, cast her eyes toward the cupboard, and without even saying a word, I didn't need her to tell me to go fetch the ball of string and start knitting another hateful dishcloth. The County of Renfrew is moving ahead on upgrading sections of the Algonquin Trail, as planned. The Algonquin Trail advisory committee previously directed staff to focus initial trail upgrades in urban areas and those areas that would connect the Algonquin Trail to other existing trail systems. Last December, the trail saw three opening ceremonies: in Arnprior, Renfrew and Petawawa. The plan continues to be to upgrade and open sections in an outward direction from these urban areas, to close any gaps, as funding develops over the coming years. At the May 8 meeting of the Algonquin Trail advisory committee, staff presented the 2018 work plan for trail upgrades throughout the Renfrew County. Several sections of the discontinued Canadian Pacific Railway corridor will be improved for use later this summer, with huge assistance from the Ontario Municipal Commuter Cycling program. After consultation with local municipalities, the county partnered to complete several sections in local areas, and will be receiving attention in various forms, including grading, brushing, compaction and/or stone dust suitable for cycling. Several control gates will also be installed at the same time trail etiquette and safety signage is erected. • Arnprior - Completion of the trail from John Street east to the Lanark-Ottawa border • McNab/Braeside - From Division Street to Sand Point Renfrew - Work will be limited, due to downtown revitalization efforts • Horton - From the bridge over the Bonnechere River to Cotieville • Whitewater Region - Through the village of Cobden, from Astrolabe Road to Turcotte Road • Laurentian Valley - From TV Tower Road to Forest Lea Road (between Pembroke and Petawawa) • City of Pembroke - From Pembroke Street West through to TV Tower Road • Laurentian Hills - From the Village of Chalk River (Main Street), north toward Wylie Road The County of Renfrew is reminding residents that only certain sections are currently open for public use. The key focus is on safety, and residents should be using only the sections of the trail that are open. The Algonquin Trail is 218 kilometres in length, and it will take a lot of work and investment to connect all the sections into one continuous multi-use trail. The County of Renfrew encourages users to view the maps on its website that clearly show which sections are currently open and which sections are under construction. Chair of the Algonquin Trail advisory committee (ATAC), Coun. Bob Sweet said, "Investments from the province and local partnerships are key pieces to seeing more kilometres of the Algonquin Trail open this year. The Algonquin Trail represents an opportunity to realize growth for economic development, tourism and active transportation. This four-season, multi-use trail connects us to approximately 4,000 km of other trails in the province." It is anticipated that by the end of the summer, at least 65 km of the Algonquin Trail will be open for enjoyment. Until such time, the public is reminded that most other areas of the trail remain closed. A website link will soon be available that will share information about mapping, and the management plan - www.ottawavalleytrail.com.
