ROAD WORK MOVES TO CENTRE OF RENFREW'S DOWNTOWN JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com The reconstruction of Renfrew's main street has reached the centre of downtown. The good news is that the almost $11-million project is on schedule, only losing a day to bad weather. With the predominance of dry weather, "they are making good progress," reports Renfrew public works director Mike Asselin. As well, the major contractor, Bonnechere Excavating, is for the most part maintaining walkways along Raglan Street so customers can usually access stores from
the front. However, most stores are encouraging the use of back entrances. Asselin noted the work has reached the stage where it has the largest impact on merchants. But the downtown businesses remain open and the business improvement area is holding special events such as Christmas in July to attract patrons, he added. Bonnechere Excavating is working five days a week, starting early on days of higher heat. It also has staff monitoring the work site on weekends to ensure safety. The plan is to have the underground and preparation work completed in time for paving in October. The project has to be completed by Dec. 31.

JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com The Renfrew County District School Board has joined more than 20 boards across the province in expressing concerns about the uncertainty surrounding the new provincial government's intentions regarding the health and physical education curriculum. The Conservative government has indicated that Ontario schools will have to revert to the 1998 curriculum because of concerns about sex-ed content while it holds public consultations on the matter. In a letter to provincial Education Minister Lisa Thompson dated Aug. 1, the Renfrew County District School Board defends
the 2015 health and physical education curriculum and asks that it be left in place until the ministry has had "the full benefit of time to complete its consultation with Ontarians." And the board urges that those consultations start right away. The letter signed by public school board chair Wendy Hewitt states: "Our students deserve a curriculum that meets current learning needs and is supported by appropriate and responsive learning materials in support of physical literacy, student health and wellness. " With only five weeks before schools return on Sept. 4, "our teachers need time to plan with the curriculum for the upcoming school year," the letter goes on to say.
"Our parents need to understand how this will be managed at school so that they can make decisions about how they can best support their child's learning on these topics at home." The RCDSB letter stresses the board "believes very strongly in equity and providing classrooms that are a welcoming environment for all students." It notes that the school district's Strategic Plan 2017-2020 includes "Safe, Caring, Inclusive and Respectful Environments" as one of its three guiding principles. "To that end, we believe that the existing health and physical education curriculum respects this tenet by providing important learning opportunities for students. It con-
textualizes healthy relationships, consent, online safety and mental health, all within the realities of our online and connected world," the letter adds. The letter reports that trustees have become "increasingly concerned" in recent weeks about what (the) health and physical education curriculum may be in place this fall." It notes that on July 11, Thompson stated that her ministry would be doing away with the existing curriculum. However, the following week, on July 16, she declared that components would remain and that changes - if any would occur only after a province-wide public consultation. "Understandably, this has led to considerable confusion among boards
Wendy Hewitt across the province - including here at the Renfrew County District School Board. "We urge you to initiate that consultation immediately so that Ontarians can be heard and multiple curriculum changes can be avoided. We would be happy to share the details of your consultation with our community so that parents, students, staff or any member can partici-

pate and/or share their perspective on this important issue." A couple of boards have even gone as far as saying they will refuse to revert to the old curriculum, which was first introduced in 1998, as the material is so outdated. Meanwhile, the Parents as First Educators organization is lobbying Conservative MPPs, including Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke's John Yakabuski, to repeal the 2015 curriculum. The group's president and former Conservative leadership candidate Tanya Granic Allen urged MPPs to ensure Thompson instructs school boards and teachers of Ontario "that this nonsense will not be taught in the Ontario classroom." "Repeal means no more gender identity theory," she added, expressing concern that the party may flip-flop on its promise to do away with the curriculum now it is in power.

MUNICIPAL ELECTION
ENCOURAGE CITIZEN INVOLVEMENT, SAYS RENFREW CANDIDATE ADAM LAVIOLETTE JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Asked why he is running for a Renfrew councillor position, firsttime candidate Adam Laviolette says, "I want to give a larger voice to the common resident." "A lot of us feel we are being left out in what is being discussed by council," he explained. He said it
should be easier for citizens to have a greater say in what council does and how tax dollars are spent. To that end, he has ideas on how to make council deliberations more transparent and councillors better accountable to the public. Laviolette is a 32-year-old Renfrew resident, born and raised, making his first foray into politics. The RCI graduate is a driving in-

He said that, with the Cogeco taping of council meetings spotty at best, it's time to make use of other technology, such as YouTube and Twitter, to inform residents of council activities. It should be made clear how each councillor voted on an issue and why, he said.

The last council has generally done a good job, he said, "but can always do better." Laviolette said that, with the tenders for the redevelopment of the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre coming in much higher than expected, council should revisit the issue. With all the retirees in town, he said, it seems to make more sense to put money into a swimming pool that could enhance health rather than into a second ice surface most are not likely to use. With Renfrew's high obesity rate, it's important to support amenities that promote healthy living, he added. Laviolette said the way to attract business to Renfrew and ensure current ones flourish is to make it "a town people want to move to." Council could boost employment by allowing and attracting more home businesses, he said. With local MPP John Yakabuski the new transportation minister, council has to properly prepare for the growth that will come with the four-laning of Highway 17, Laviolette said. "It's coming. We need to be ready for it." Laviolette said his age

He said people should become more engaged in municipal politics by running for council and writing letters to the editor. Laviolette said he looks forward to pre-election public debates and is willing to speak to any person or group interested in his platform. "I'm hoping we have plenty of civilized discussions (prior to election day)," he said. He welcomes public input on Twitter at Adamlaviolette and is planning a Facebook group. Laviolette is facing Sandi Heins, Tom Sidney, Mike Coulas, Arlene Jamieson, Jim Miller, Andrew Evans, Clint McWhirter and Kate Windle in the race for five councillor positions.

The decision to reopen and expand Burnstown Building Supply was based largely on the growing number of residential and business developments in the Renfrew-Arnprior area. A number of dignitaries at the Burnstown building centre's grand opening celebration Aug. 2 made mention of several major projects on the go, and many more expected as the four-laning of Highway 17 extends through the area. Partners Bruce Gannon and Laurie Wichers-Schreur acquired the Castle Building Centres outlet last October from Glen and Joanne McLeod after they had closed it for health reasons. McLeod Building Supplies had been operating across the Madawaska River from Burnstown since 1989. Gannon and Wichers-Schreur have been running the Renfrew Rona Castle outlet on Gillan Road as Wood Works of Renfrew, since buying it from the Lockwood family in 2016. They reopened the Burnstown location on April 30 and held a grand opening event Aug. 2 to showcase the changes at the site. The retail area has doubled in size to about 4,800 square feet, the warehouse has been renovated, many new products have been added and the main building has been painted Castle blue. "The Renfrew store is very busy, so we felt a store was warranted on the south side of the Madawaska for the convenience of our customers in White Lake, Calabogie and all over McNab/Braeside," said Gannon. He noted that the township has at least four major developments underway, so the need for building products is on the rise. "The growth in the township is picking up every day," McNab/Braeside Mayor Tom Peckett told the crowd gathered for the ribbon-cutting. "With 417 coming, we're expecting a lot more growth to come," he added. "So this building supply store is greatly needed." Renfrew Reeve Peter Emon noted there are 10,000 building starts within an hour's drive of the outlet. With already 14,000 vehicles a day on Highway 17 at the Calabogie Road intersection, the store is "ideally suited" to benefit from the new markets that will come when the highway is four-laned, he said. "Thank you for your investment into our community." Renfrew County Warden Jennifer Murphy agreed that the "area will certainly be booming" with the coming of the Highway 17 four-laning and the new connector at Calabogie Road.
After the ribbon-cutting, WichersSchreur announced that they are planning to open a "third location," a virtual store online where people can order items 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There will be 60,000 products available and orders will be delivered within a week, she said. The Burnstown store has already expanded its product base to cater to the needs of both permanent residents and cottagers, doit-yourselfers and professional contractors, said Gannon. For instance, the outlet carries kayaks, and canoes, and other soft water sports items. Gannon said he is pleased the store features a mix of experienced and young staff that have "pulled together and really gelled ... making for a nice atmosphere."

CHAIN-REACTION CRASH SNARLS HIGHWAY 17 TRAFFIC
RENFREW OPP ARREST MALE FOR BREAK AND ENTER
JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Drivers are being warned about following too closely after a chain reaction multi-vehicle collision on Hwy. 17 just west of O'Brien Road early Monday afternoon snarled traffic. The highway was already congested with vacationers returning home after the long weekend when two separate crashes occurred. Renfrew OPP were investigating a rear-end collision in the eastbound lane on the hill just east of the Bonnechere River bridge about 12:30 p.m. Aug. 6 when between three and five other vehicles collided as they approached the scene. A driver in the first collision was charged with following too closely, reports Renfrew OPP spokeswoman Janice Sawbridge. Charges are pending in the
John Carter/Metroland Traffic on Hwy. 17 was backed up as far as the eye could see in both directions after a multi-car collision eastbound just east of the Bonnechere River Bridge about 1 p.m. Monday. second crash. Sawbridge urges motorists to pay attention to other traffic and leave plenty of room between them and the vehicles ahead. Because of the volume of traffic, Monday's crash could have been caused by traffic suddenly slowing for the O'Brien light. It appears nobody was seriously injured, but at least two motorists were
checked out by paramedics for minor injuries and others were shaken up. Fortunately for one of the drivers caught up in the crash, her sister was following with a camper and was able to rescue her dog while she was being looked over by paramedics.
MOTORCYCLIST KILLED A motorcyclist killed in
the Upper Ottawa Valley Sunday, Aug. 5 has been identified as Steven Mayhew, 52, of Killaloe, Hagarty and Richards Township. Killaloe OPP report the man lost control and crashed into the ditch on Round Lake Road near Tramore Road around 2:30 p.m. He was rushed to hospital but died of his injuries.
The Renfrew Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has arrested and charged a male after a break and enter was reported in Renfrew Friday afternoon, Aug. 3. Officers responded to the break and enter at 1:36 pm on Opeongo Road in Renfrew. The victim had returned to her home and located a male inside her residence. The suspect fled on foot and was arrested shortly after by police. Officers located the suspect at a residence on Airth Boulevard in Renfrew. The male was held in custody for a bail hearing on Aug. 4. Remanded into custody is Daniel Delorme, 35, of Pembroke, formerly of Renfrew. He faces several charges: one count of break and enter; possession of break-in tools; pos-
session of stolen property under $5,000; theft under $5,000; two counts of failing to comply with a recognizance; possession of a schedule one drug opioid. Renfrew has experienced several break-andenters this summer. OPP spokeswoman Janice Sawbridge isn't linking Delorme to all of them, but is exploring the possibility. "That is something we'll be looking into and investigating," Sawbridge said. She noted that others have occurred since, though not within town limits. Arnprior and Horton properties were recently broken into. An investigation is still being conducted by Provincial Constable Mark O'Dacre and the Renfrew Community Street Crime Unit.

SLOW DOWN, ENJOY SUMMER Oh, those lazy, crazy, hazy days of summer. Days full of carefree outings, beach parties, cold drinks, hot tunes, old friends, new acquaintances, summer romances. And all too often - because all the above can sidetrack drivers - carnage on our highways. Furthermore, today's light and peppy cars have far more bells and whistles to distract drivers. Add to that all the hand-held communication and entertainment devices that tend to dominate people's lives these days, and it's no wonder it takes a great deal of willpower not to be distracted. Then there's the perplexing need for so many motorists to rush to their destinations at warp speed. That's particularly difficult in the summer with the roads clogged with tourists and construction workers. Is it really worth a speeding ticket and the resultant rise in insurance costs, or if you're going fast enough, a stunt driving charge and all the inconvenience and expense that entails? As well as the negative publicity. That brings us to last week's report provided by they OPP, which disclosed that a local teen faces stunt driving charges and had his car impounded and driver's licence suspended for seven days. The report caused a mini-storm on social media with several posts questioning why the 17-year-old was named. As Renfrew OPP spokeswoman Janice Sawbridge explains, the publication ban on names of juveniles facing charges has a different age limit for criminal and provincial offenses. Those under 18 charged with a criminal offense can't be named, while for those nabbed under a provincial statute such at the Highway Traffic, Liquor Control or Trespass to Property acts, the no-publish is for under-16s. The rationale: if you're old enough to drive, you're considered an adult and old enough to be named if charged. The newspaper understands it can be painful to the family for a teenager to be named publicly. It's not done out of spite, but because it can play an important deterrent role. If you're named then found innocent, let us know. We'll publish that too. We also realize there are various degrees of malfeasance: speeding because you're late for work is usually more understandable and less dangerous than street racing. However, the final outcome could be just as devastating. It's better to be late for work than not arrive at all because you've wrapped your car around a tree or even worse an innocent motorist's vehicle. Yet some drivers continue to tempt fate. Const. Sawbridge noted that police recently charged a young mother rushing to work with stunt driving - and she had her 4-yearold daughter in the back seat. More than 25 years later, a July collision on the outskirts of town that killed four young people is still seared into many Renfrewites' memories. As is the crash last October that killed two Renfrew Wolves hockey players. A teenaged Arnprior girl was killed while texting as she drove to work in 2010. Every year lives are lost because people aren't taking driving seriously enough. Conversely, it is hoped lives are saved because coverage, including naming those breaking the law, has made some drivers think twice when tempted by distractions while behind the wheel. And if your teens aren't paying attention, at least parents should be making the effort to be good role models. They have a responsibility to society, before they unleash their children on our highways, to impress on them that vehicles are not toys, but potentially lethal weapons. Weapons that can turn in an instance an idyllic summer day deadly.

MCD’S SUSTAINABLE "I predict Canada BEEF PROGRAM will follow the QUESTIONED To the Editor: I was rather underwhelmed by recent press regarding McDonald's starting to sell 'certified sustainable beef'. Claims that this is the first such program in the world don't bear much scrutiny. Having read the program production protocols, I can assure you they are considerably less rigorous than those I was meeting for the Scottish Farm Assurance program in the early 1990s. My experience with that program doesn't encourage me that there will be any benefit to Canadian cattle producers from this program in the long run. The Scottish model similarly encouraged early participation with the promise of market premiums, yet once a critical mass was achieved the premiums disappeared and anyone that wasn't 'Farm Assured' had their pro-

duce discounted in the marketplace. I predict Canada will follow the same path as Scotland with the cattle producer left to shoulder the burden of ongoing costs and regulation to meet the standards in perpetuity for no financial benefit. With only $20 per head being used as the bait in the trap - and this being paid to the feedlot operator - the rancher likely won't get enough to buy a Big Mac the day he is in town selling his calves!
What really rankles me though, is that farmers and ranchers must be certified as having production practices attaining a certain level of environmental and operational sustainability - for McDonald's! The same McDonald's whose menu items are generally considered junk food contributing to the obesity epidemic and include a throw-away Chinese made plastic toy with every 'kids meal'? I'd like to know where the sustainability, environmental or otherwise, is in this case, and who is auditing them? I think the real driver of this program is fulfilling the desire of agri-food processors and retailers to environmentally 'greenwash' their corporate images in the eyes of the consumer. What they are really trying to buy for $20 is the trusted reputation farmers and ranchers have built up over generations. I'm sorry, but mine isn't for sale and I won't be participating in any such scheme.

To the editor: Come on, Renfrew council, now you need a boom and RTVs? Really, toys! We need our roads fixed. Lawn mowers can still be repaired, they don't have expiration dates. The same goes for the rest of the equipment. If you can't afford to fix the roads, you can't afford new toys. Didn't your parents teach you basics on spending? And if you're upset with the
pool questionnaire's response or lack thereof, it's because there was no question for: Are you interested in forking over more of your cash for something you know we can't afford? You could have taken that $146,000 and scratch-coated a few streets. Let's face it, the way you spend our money, we won't see town roads repaired in my lifetime or my kids'. Not sure why you are patting yourselves on the back again. No one else is impressed.

As you read this column I am looking at birds on the western coast of James Bay at a remote location called Longridge. Here, at low tide, along with a handful of other volunteers I am searching the mudflats for migrating shorebirds (sandpipers and plovers). While I am recording the numbers and species of every shorebird I see, in particular I am looking for an endangered species called the Red Knot. The Ontario coast of James Bay is known for providing habitat essential for the wellbeing of migrating shorebirds. Although two dozen species of sandpipers and plovers dot the bay's coastline in the hundreds of thousands during August, virtually none of them were present earlier in the year. Before they came to James Bay the shorebirds were in the Arctic on their nesting grounds. Currently, the birds are in their migration to South America where they will spend winter. The shorebirds stop along the coast to devour the myriad invertebrates living in the mud. The animals they eat are turned into fat, which is the fuel that powers their long journey south, a trip often accomplished in several days of nonstop flying. They arrive along the coast in flocks that can reach epic sizes, sometimes even tens of thousands. Sandpipers have been called "the wind birds" for the way their flocks dip and swirl, and for the great journeys they undergo in the air. About a dozen sandpiper species are regularly encountered, the rarest of these being the Red Knot.
Knots nest across the Arctic with one population, the rufa subspecies, critically endangered. There are only about 20,000 of this race left due to an 80% decline in their population in recent decades. The reasons for the dramatic decline aren't clear but habitat loss in their wintering grounds may be one reason, as is the degradation of stopover sites used in spring migration such as Chesapeake Bay in Massachusetts. The interest in Knots spans three countries in two continents. Research into their decline and movements involves capturing individuals and placing numbered colour tags on their legs. Some birds get equipped with tiny electronic devices that allow the tracking of their movements. My role in is to estimate their numbers passing through my group's assigned section of James Bay, and to record any tag number that can be read through a spotting scope. Millions of shorebirds depend on the health of James Bay's tidal flats in order to complete their migration. Despite the essential nature of this IBA, there are rumours that James Bay is being looked at as a potential site for hundreds, even thousands of power generating wind turbines. If this plan ever comes to fruition, it will likely spell the end of the line not only for Red Knots but also for many other species of migrating shorebirds. That thought gives me a very different kind of knot in my stomach. The Nature email is mruntz@start.ca

If there was a major construction project on the go in the Renfrew area, Grant Crozier probably had a hand in it. The owner of Crozier Excavating Ltd. died July 29 at the age of 72. Thanks to his hard work and vision, the company he started more than 40 years ago in Admaston grew to become a major contributor to the area’s economic growth. “If you saw a big hole around here, it was probably Grant’s,” quipped Renfrew Reeve Peter Emon. “He really left his mark in town and all over the place,” said Renfrew Mayor Don Eady. “He was such a hardworking man ... and a very successful businessman.” Former longtime Admaston-Bromley councillor and deputy mayor Jack Kelly, who drove truck for Crozier Excavating for 25
A photograph of a younger Grant Crozier, supplied by his family. years, remembers his former boss as a “tireless worker.” “He was down there in the trenches working with you,” Kelly said. “He never told you to do anything he wouldn’t do
himself.” Among the major projects undertaken by the company were the Renfrew Health Village and the Renfrew Victoria Hospital expansion, the town’s sewer plant, many Wilson
Investment residential projects and a variety of road construction jobs. “Big or small, it didn’t matter,” said Kelly. “He wasn’t afraid to tackle any size project.” Crozier’s hard work, common sense approach and ability to take on a variety of construction-related jobs all played a role in the business’ success, Kelly added. “He was a real down-toearth sort ... a good hardworking, honest industrious man,” said Eady. “You’d see a Crozier truck going down the street and who would be behind the wheel, but Grant.” Crozier is survived by wife Karen and sons Curtis and Corey. Visitation was held at the Goulet Funeral Home on Aug. 3 followed by a private family service. Donations in Crozier’s memory are being accepted for the Renfrew Victoria Hospital Foundation.

They played a major role in the planning of such advancements as the central communications centre, forming of the RVH Founda-

"They deserve a lot of credit for all they did for the hospital." Campbell said Burwell was a pioneer in helping found several agriculture organizations and making existing ones more involved in the community. "He was a hard worker and a very friendly fellow," she said. In 1949, the Burwell farm moved to the Barr Line where he raised cattle, pigs, sheep and poultry. Among Burwell's many agricultural involvements were15 years as a 4-H leader, provincial director of the Junior Farmers of Ontario, 17 years a director of the Renfrew County Pork Produc-

From humble beginnings, Murray Burwell became one of the Renfrew area's most influential citizens. Burwell, who died July 22 at the age of 88, is being remembered for his many contributions in the areas of agriculture, health care and municipal politics. Despite his impressive list of accomplishments, Burwell was best known for working quietly behind the scenes with a sincere concern for his community and no thought of self-aggrandizement. "There was no ulterior motives when it came to Murray, just genuine interest in protecting and ensuring the hospital succeeded," said Renfrew Victoria Hospital CEO Randy Penney. "I can't say enough positive things about him and his contributions to RVH." Burwell, who served the hospital so long and well he was named its first honorary director, was instrumental in the hiring of Penney to lead RVH into the much-admired and groundbreaking institution it has become. Burwell, who left school at age 14 to help his ailing father run their Osceola farm, was a life-long farmer who served with countless agriculture organizations. In 2014 he was named to the Renfrew County Agricultural Wall of Fame. "He was very supportive
of all of the farm organizations and sat on many of their boards," said Renfrew County Federation of Agriculture secretary-treasurer Donna Campbell. "He was very important to agriculture in the county." Burwell also served on Bromley Township council for eight years and was named Admaston-Bromley Senior Citizen of the Year in 2009. He received a Bicentennial Provincial Award of Merit for his contribution to agriculture in 1984 as well as a 2003 Ontario Volunteer Service Award. Penney said that Burwell was an "outstanding " hospital board member for 25 years starting in 1976, serving as chairman (1986-88), vice-chairman (1992-2001) and on every committee. He was among a genera-

SUDOKU
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
horoscopes ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 It can be challenging to silence your suspicious mind, Aries. Not everyone is trying to pull the wool over your eyes. Avoid gossip whenever possible, and you’ll be fine.
LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 This is a prime time to nurture business relationships that could push your employment career into a new direction, Libra. There are many possibilities at your disposal.
TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Wear your heart on your sleeve, Taurus. Doing so may endear you to others. It may seem like you’re putting all your cards on the table, but you’re showing you’re genuine.
SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 It can be difficult for your detailed-oriented self to draw the line at what to include in a task and what to leave out. You strive for perfection in all you do, Scorpio.
GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Toning things down is not necessarily your style, Gemini. But this week you may want to keep a few details to yourself. Maintain a low profile for the next few days.
SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 You are wondering if you should play it safe or dance closer to the edge this week, Sagittarius. It may be because you are feeling trapped by routine. Change can be good.
CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, it is very easy to get wrapped up in the problems of others. But sometimes you have to let others work things out on their own. Offer advice if it is sought.
CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, you want to be there for all the people who may need your assistance. But avoid stretching yourself too thin so you can approach each situation energetically.
LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, behind the big lion’s roar beats the heart of a pussy cat. Your sensitive side is bound to come through this week, when you may provide comfort to a person in need.
AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Choose your battles, Aquarius. There are not enough hours in the day to be an activist for every cause. Only select the ones that you truly feel strongly about.
VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 What you show to the public may not be the true Virgo you keep close to yourself. Let a few intimate details sneak out, and you may be surprised at the reactions.
PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Try not to record every moment on social media, Pisces. It’s good to leave an aura of mystery from time to time and enjoy the moments.

LOGOS LAND RESURRECTS ITS 'STEP BACK' CAR SHOW JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Logos Land revived its Step Back in Time car show Saturday and Andy Gervais is glad they did. Gervais was the lucky winner of the show's grand prize, one week's accommodation in Orlando, Florida. The Pembroke man entered his yellow Dodge Bumble Bee short pickup in the show. Organizers were delighted that the event, which hadn't been held since 2013, attracted 59 entries of antique, classic and performance cars. The five people's choice award-winners were owned by George Wouda of Cobden, Ron Jaremkow of Forester's Falls, Dan
Coady of Kinburn, Gordie Wagner of Pembroke and Matt Kennedy. Tom O'Hara of Pembroke won the 50/50 draw, which raised money for Hospice Renfrew. Among those participating in the Logos Land car show was Bruce Robertson of Arnprior. He'll have his 1934 Chev hot rod on display again at the Arnprior Wheels Car-Truck-Bike show on the holiday Monday (Aug. 6). Organizers are expected to fill Hydro Park beside Eastside Mario's for the show, which runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It doubles as a fundraiser for ArnpriorBraeside-McNab Seniors at Home and the Arnprior Regional Health Foundation.

OPP SURVEY SHOWS MAJORITY OF ONTARIANS FEEL VERY SAFE DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@ metroland.com
19 Annual Garlic Festival! th
Saturday, August 11th 8am to 3pm Sunday, August 12th 10am to 3pm Carp Fairgrounds Over 100+ vendors, cooking demos, food court. Garlic, garlic & more garlic! Free admission. Free parking. Wheelchair accessible.
The OPP has released results of a survey showing more than half of Ontarians feel "very safe" in their communities. Along with that group of 52 per cent of respondents, another 45.5 per cent feel "safe." Only about two per cent feel "unsafe" or "very unsafe." The annual survey by an outside company of 1,007 participants has a margin of error of no greater than plus or minus five per cent, 19 times out of 20. Respondents from eastern Ontario and other areas felt significantly safer compared with those from the north, as do those living in OPP areas compared with those policed by municipal forces, the survey reveals. "Policing is a commitment to serve and protect
the fundamental rights of all people in this province," says OPP Commissioner Vince Hawkes. "Each year, it is important for us to check in with Ontarians about how we're doing and assess our priorities for the future. We will continue to work diligently to meet the evolving needs of our communities." On response time to violent crime, positive opinions dropped: just 27 per cent were very satisfied, and almost were 68 satisfied. On sensitivity toward victims of violent crime, it was similar: almost 21 per cent were very satisfied, 71 per cent were satisfied. Faye Cassista has been with Victim Services of Renfrew County for 16 years. She said she has a "very good" relationship with OPP, and is confident that it is meeting the needs of victims.
The majority of Ontarians in areas with OPP service feel very safe and are satisfied with response times to violent crime and sensitivity to victim needs. "I firmly believe that, locally, they are doing what they are supposed to be doing," Cassista said. "Victim services have improved tremendously over the years. There used to be people falling through the cracks. The overall survey doesn't surprise me." Along with violent crime and victim services, the survey dealt with OPP marine and ATV patrols, along with highway-related issues.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I would walk right up to Heaven and bring you back again. No farewell words were spoken, no time to say “goodbye” You were gone before I knew it, and only God knows why. My heart still aches in sadness, and secret tears will flow, What it meant to love you – no one can ever know. But now I know you want me, to mourn for you no more, To remember all the happy times, life still has much in store. Since you’ll never be forgotten, I pledge to you today – A hallowed place within my heart is where you’ll always stay Love and miss you, Mom, Denise and Lisa

NEAT'S PIZZA: THE BEST LIVE MUSIC TO FAMILY'S DINNER DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@ metroland.com The eternal and pressing debate in Arnprior and Renfrew: Mama Rosa or Jim's, Flamingo or Renfrew Pizzeria, respectively - which has the best pizza in town? Not to challenge the parameters of the debate too much - or the geography, for that matter. But how about looking outside the

My order, the Ziggy Stardust - simple tomato sauce, tasty olive oil, mozza with bite and fresh basil from the on-site garden was a hit single with the family. So we ordered a followup. The Jack White has red sauce, sausage with an array of spices, whole roasted garlic (not recommended on a first date), red onions and mozzarella. It was even better. But the leader of the band is the chewy, crunchy crust. Nothing brings a pie together like a handmade crust with a dusting of flour. Neat's pizza quickly reached the top of our fami-

BLIZZARD OF SUPPORT FOR CHEO AUG. 9 JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Dairy Queen fans in Renfrew and Arnprior can
take part in an annual tradition of "making miracles happen" Thursday, Aug. 9 by visiting their local Dairy Queens to celebrate Mira-
cle Treat Day. Proceeds from every Blizzard treat sold at the Dairy Queen locations will be donated to the Chil-
dren's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), one of 14 Children's Miracle Network member hospitals across Canada. Staff at both locations get into the spirit of the day by ensuring there is a festival atmosphere as they dole out the blizzards. Every minute, 62 children enter a Children's Miracle Network member hospital for treatment. The

The kitchen wore the sweet smell of sugar, vinegar, mustard, and spices, all simmering gently on the second burner of the Findlay Oval. The red and white checked oilcloth on the table had been scrubbed clean, and white porcelain basins of freshly picked beans, onions, and green tomatoes were at the ready. My sister Audrey was at one end of the table, Mother at the other. In front of each was a chopping board and kitchen knives Father had sharpened to make the job at hand as easy as possible. By the time the day was over, there would be many jars of chili sauce, beans in brine, and green tomato pickles, all ready to take down to the shelves in the cellar to augment our meals over the winter. Still to be 'done down' would be the preserves raspberries, strawberries and chokecherry jam, and anything else Mother could find to add to the swinging shelf under the house. I sat and watched, so very anxious to be part of this very important job ... putting away stores for the winter. Mother could sense that I wanted to help, and so she said I could have the job of washing the beans. They were already soaking in cold water, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why they had to washed further. But Mother was high on cleanliness, and there wouldn't be one bean used until it had been thoroughly washed. She said that each one had to be rubbed separately, not simply swished around in the water. And so I began, taking one bean at a time out of the cold water, and pinching it through two fingers and putting it out on the spotlessly clean tea towel waiting for the chopping board. It was Audrey's job to cut off the ends of each bean, and then put as many as she could into the empty jars that had been boiling on the stove, standing them upright. Once each jar had been packed tightly, Mother poured cold salted water in it, and I knew that when winter came, those very beans would taste like they had just come out of the garden. My three brothers and Father never came near the kitchen when the job of preserving and pickling was going on. Mother had no time for idle chatter, and the brothers knew, if they hung around long enough, they would get the hateful job of carting the bottles down to the cellar. It was that cellar which scared the daylights out of me. You could get into Aunt Bertha's cellar by simply opening a trap door off the kitchen, and going down a ladder. But the only way you could get into our cellar was to go outside and heave open the two huge flat doors.
