DOWNTOWN RENFREW PROGRESS 'GAINING MOMENTUM' JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com The downtown Renfrew reconstruction project is on time and on budget, the town's director of development and works told council Aug. 14. Mike Asselin said that the work is "gaining momentum" now the focus of the project has moved to the centre of downtown. That means it is currently having its greatest effect on merchants, he reported. However, the town and main contractor, Bonnechere Excavating Inc. (BEI), are working with the downtown Business Improvement Association (BIA) to maintain customer access and ensure the public knows the stores are still open for business, he said. He noted the main corridor through town is on track to be finished this year. Work on side

streets in 2019 should have "minimal impact" on the downtown, he said. Asselin said that considering it is the largest infrastructure project ever undertaken in Renfrew, "it's going well so far," adding "we're hoping we find nothing underground that we can't handle." The street lighting has begun to be erected, starting with the east side in the area of town hall. Raglan from Bridge to Munroe Street has received its base lift of pavement and will get its top lift Sept. 17 when paving from Munroe to Railway is scheduled. When that is done about 55 per cent of the project will be complete. The sanitary sewer has been replaced along the full length of the street and "happily" proved it could handle flow from heavy See BEI, page 3

BEI WORKERS PRAISED FOR COURTESY Continued from page 1
rains in July, he said. Asselin reported the contractor found many of the main street's sanitary sewer laterals were in bad condition, so it was decided to replace instead of just realigning them. He said the change would be basically revenue neutral as there turned out to be fewer service connections than expected. Landscaping work will soon begin and the traffic signals for the Munroe intersection should arrive shortly, Asselin said. He noted the contractor became more comfortable managing traffic flow as work progressed in the north end, but keeping cars moving in the Hall/Opeongo area has been challenging. Asselin said the town is receiving "a lot of positive comments" on how courteous the contractor's workers are in helping customers manoeuvre about the construction areas. Coun. Tom Sidney, agreed, saying BEI workers have been "very accommodating" to customers, especially older resi-
dents. "They've been phenomenal." Sidney and Coun. Kate Windle noted many residents have shown a great deal of interest in the work and the technology behind it. Some Plaunt Street residents even held an informal block party to watch sidewalks being formed, said Windle. Parking behind the stores and in the municipal lots, where the time limit has been boosted to three hours, appears to be handling most of the need as the overflow lots at St. Paul's and St. Francis Xavier churches are not getting much use. Asselin said the town keeps the BIA and merchants updated and is happy to speak to clubs such as Renfrew Rotary about the project. It also provides notices via email and through the website where about 200 people have signed up to receive updates. He said most townspeople are well versed about the project, so it's the out-of-towners and cottagers that are being targeted when it comes to assuring people that the downtown stores are open for business.
DOWNTOWN RENFREW TREES REPLACED, PROTECTED
While the number of trees uprooted on Renfrew's main street because of the downtown reconstruction project is distressing to some residents, they will be replaced. Town of Renfrew engineering technician Lane Cleroux explained that most of the trees taken down were unhealthy and at risk of dying as their root systems had become compromised by the concrete sidewalks and their gravel bases. The lost trees attracting the most attention were the larger ones in front of town hall and the lawyer's office next door. However, they and other greenery taken down along main street will be replaced with nine varieties of trees, said Cleroux. The contract calls for plastic wells to be installed to protect the new trees' roots. They are being filled with soil to give the trees a better chance of survival. The new trees will be planted during the landscaping phase of the project with factors such as need for shade and esthetics determining their placement. They will be planted in such a way as to not block the visibility of storefront and signs, Cleroux explained. Renfrew council has received a letter from the Renfrew Legion asking that the replacing of the trees in the town hall area be accomplished in such a way to give passersby an unobstructed view of the cenotaph. The legion has also suggested that the town remove two or three parking spots in front of the cenotaph for the same reason.

MUNICIPAL ELECTION
HORTON CANDIDATE TOUTS TOWNSHIP, FARM EXPERIENCE JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com
John Carter/Metroland Peter Tippins: seeking election to Horton council.
Horton will have a least three new council members out of five in its next term, so Peter Tippins feels his lengthy experience working for the township would be invaluable around the council table. "With the three vacancies, it was time (to run)," he said. "I know this township inside out, from one side to the other." Furthermore, his business experience building up a farm from scratch has taught him to be careful and thrifty. "I'd be a voice of reason," he said. Tippins was born in Arnprior and moved to Horton in elementary school when his father bought a Lochwinnoch farm. After working in construction across Canada as a young man, Tippins returned to the farm in Horton and was hired on a per-
manent part-time basis by the township. He worked there from the early 1980s to 2006, the last few years as lead hand. It made him "well-versed" with Horton's infrastructure such as the roads and landfill. Tippins noted that longtime township road employee Stanley Campbell taught him to drive a truck and that he learned a great deal from his first supervisor, Dalton Hein. And reporting at monthly meetings helped him understand how council works, he added, noting he worked closely with both mayoralty candidates when they served as public works committee chairs. Tippins said he also learned a great deal when operating farms he rented, then a cattle farm he bought on Humphries Road. "It takes a lot of reasoning to properly run a farm ...
you have to evaluate the pros and cons of every decision," he said. "You can really affect the viability farm with a wrong move ... so it's important to do your research and reason everything out to make sure it's a good idea." Having that experience on council, "I think will be a good asset for the township," he said. He noted that Horton has had many of the same people on council for years, but that is changing this year. While it's "great to have new thoughts and new ways of doing things," there also has to be some continuity and business savvy, he said. "We have to move forward in a careful way."
Tippins said the fourlaning of Highway 17 through Horton will be good for the township, bringing more residents and businesses. "We've got a great little township here," he said, adding that council can keep it that way by properly managing the growth that is bound to come. He said he'll be distributing flyers during the campaign and has opened a Facebook page. And he welcomes calls and comments on his cellphone. Tippins is facing Glen Campbell, Jeff Taylor, Ian Moodie, Tom Webster, Lane Cleroux and Doug Humphries for four councillor seats in the Oct. 22 election.

JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Doug HumDoug Humphries feels it's time a Humphries was back on Horton council. The Humphries family contributed several local politicians and community activists to the life of the township in the last century. Now that he is semi-retired, he has the "time to give back to my community" by being the next Humphries to serve on council. Although he now resides in Renfrew, he lived in Horton for 50 years and still has a farm and cottage there. His many years running the century-old family cow-calf and now a cash crop (hay) operation on Humphries Road as well as a stint with TSC stores would serve him in good stead on council, he said. Considering the next four-year term will likely be full of variables and challenges influenced by the coming of Highway 17's four lanes, it's not a commitment he takes lightly, he added. He noted his long experience in the township would be especially important with at least three senior members leaving council at the end of this term. Remembering the 3Rs he learned at school, he has incorporated his own 3Rs to sum up his platform: ready, resourceful and realistic. "Add respectful to that too," he added. Humphries, who was "very involved"
with the Renfrew Fair board for years as well as serving as a 4-H leader, said it's important for council to support Horton's "great bunch of volunteers" playing key roles in such important amenities as the fire department and community centre. Council has to have Horton well-positioned for new growth whether the four lanes come quickly or slowly, he said. The township has plenty of potential for residential development but must make sure it handles it properly and ensure it is up to reasonable standards, he added. Likewise, the township shouldn't ex-
pect major plants to relocate in Horton, but more small manufacturing facilities and tourism-related business should be encouraged, Humphries said. He said the new growth will help pay for more recreation and other services and allow council to keep taxes "reasonable." Humphries said it's vital for a candidate to "take the time to learn what people feel is important." Being "fairly outgoing," he plans to talk to as many Horton residents as possible. He will also use brochures and a website to campaign and welcomes questions and comments at mailto: dougghumphries@gmail.com

Fraud Police are warning residents of Renfrew county that if a caller asks you to pay them with iTunes cards, it is a scam and hang up the phone. An Arnprior resident believed the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) was going to arrest them for taxes owed unless iTunes cards were purchased and provided to them.
The victim purchased more 7 than $12,000 worth of cards and then provided the identifying numbers on the back of the cards to the scammers over the telephone. The CRA does not accept iTunes cards as a valid form of payment for taxes owed. The police will not arrest you for taxes owed. These are warning signs that you are dealing with a scammer and not a valid employee of the CRA. Please educate yourself, your family members and friends about frauds and scams. ATVERS MUST EARN TRUST ATVs: some love them; some hate 'em. So it's no surprise there is a sharp divide over whether all-terrain-vehicles should be permitted on the CN Trail through the south end of Renfrew County. It's reminiscent of the debates 20 years ago over allowing snowmobilers on the corridors left when they first started tearing up the rails. At that time there was a vocal element, particularly among those living along the rail lines, opposed to allowing machines on the trails. It was hard to blame them as snowmobiles tended to be much noisier back then and there was little policing of the yahoo element. It only took a few bad apples with no respect for residents or pedestrians enjoying the trail to rouse the populace against snowmobile use. But give the snowmobilers credit. They didn't just whine about the snowmobile naysayers. They took action to address the main concerns. They mobilized their members, worked with police to drag offenders into line and promoted the economic advantages of the activity. They promoted a trail permit system and signed landuse agreements with landowners. They conducted training sessions for members and stay-on-the-trails campaigns. They showed they were willing to pitch in by maintaining, grooming and bridging trails to the benefit of both themselves and other users. They exuded community spirit by holding fundraisers for a variety of worthy causes such as Easter Seals and the Snowsuit fund. The snowmobilers slowly earned the confidence of the public and local politicians. They proved that being respectful of others does not have to take the fun out of the sport. Much of the credit for the snowmobilers' elevated standing in the community is due to the area's clubs - all have played roles in making snowmobiling, dare we say it, respectable. The ATVers need to steal a page out of the snowmobilers' playbook. The ATVers who ignore signs, rip up pathways, vandalize gates, race four abreast on the backroads and carelessly discard cigarette butts do not help the cause. The Renfrew County ATV Club has promised increased policing, but have yet to persuade many they are up to the task. The club has been making strides in the last couple of years when it comes to bringing ATVers under their umbrella, encouraging safety and involvement in maintaining trails systems. But they have a way to go before they come close to achieving the trails 'cred' the snowmobile clubs have accumulated. Adding to the ATVers' challenge is that their season is much longer than the snowmobile one and fraught with many more perils, from fire and dust to noise and littering. And the trails tend to be much busier in the summer, multiplying the likelihood of conflict. If the ATVers want to change the minds of McNab/ Braeside and Renfrew councils to give them full use of the CN Trail in this area, they need to become a more credible representative of ATVers as a whole. And they need to persuade residents along the trail they can stop the excesses and bad behaviour of some of their brethren. At least they have the Algonquin (CP) Trail on which to show they are up to the challenge (if they aren't they may lose that too). Earning the trust of local residents and councillors won't come overnight. It takes time and effort. Just ask the snowmobilers.

WHO WE ARE LETTERS & COMMENTARY SENIORS SERVICE FEE OPPORTUNITY INCREASE A TAX GRAB FOR SHORELINE PROPERTY OWNERS To the editor: A recent letter from Bruyere (my helpline) informed me of a change in management of this very essential service for seniors who are being strongly urged to remain in their homes during their declining years. I was pleased. This service has on more than one occasion been instrumental in helping me. Reading on, however, I discovered that there was sting in the tale of the letter. My monthly fee of $40 will now be increased by $5.20. Apparently this service is now eligible for HST. I may be wrong, but I suspect this is only one more tax grab, this time aimed at aged members of our community. I wonder do some government employees receive a bonus for ferreting out new methods of taxing us to death. Help! (no pun intended).

READER WEIGHS IN ON SALE OF EXCESS HYDRO To the editor: Re: "MP's flyer offers misleading information, Aug. 16." Ontario's electricity consumers and taxpayers pay for the production of "excess" electricity. If that excess power is sold to, for example, New York, as otherwise that power is lost and no associated revenue is realized, then the proceeds thereof should be credited to Ontarians' electricity bills; assuming these are not already so credited. Editorially, Ontario's electricity rates are excessively high and render our businesses uncompetitive and economic development unviable and, hence, reduces job creation.

RENFREW APPROVES PER STOP BOOST FOR BEAUMEN JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com A weak market for recyclables has prompted Renfrew council to allow Beaumen to up its charge per stop in town. The approval for the processing fee increase comes in mid-contract, but council felt it was warranted considering that markets are down all over the
world, explained Coun. Mike Coulas. Beaumen's costs are also rising because problems with cleanliness of product and the higher minimum wage. Coulas reported to council at its Aug. 14 meeting that the public works committee he chairs did discuss whether it should be changing a contract that was awarded by ten-
der. "But we have a local business that employs many local people, so we moved it on to council for approval," he said. He noted that the boost of 28 cents a stop, which translates to $2,089 a month or about $25,000 a year, will be reviewed annually and revoked if markets improve. "That's not likely to happen," said Coulas.

Inevitably I was the first one up at camp, and each dawn I eagerly scanned the horizon for animals. One year, a large bull caribou made an appearance. But this year only black bears were visible, several of which regularly fed on the Gooseberries and Soapberries abundantly growing on the coastal ridges. A mother with two cubs frequenting one of our trails caused some concern but they were never threatening and we did carry bear spray and bangers (explosive devices shot from a cylinder) just in case. Real excitement arose when on three occasions beluga whales swam into view. One of these beautiful white animals afforded great views when it rolled onto its side and rubbed against submerged rocks to remove old skin. The mud flats were alive daily with thousands of sandpipers devouring myriad invertebrates in the mud. The fat they accumulated was the fuel for their journey to South America. Each day Ross Wood captured sandpipers in mist nets strung along the shore. He took the birds' measurements as well as blood samples, and placed numbered metal tags on their legs. Ross also
equipped Lesser Yellowlegs with satellite transmitters, devices that send data every six hours so that their owners' movements can be tracked wherever they fly. It is an exhilarating sight when like a runaway wave thousands of Whiterumped and Semipalmated sandpipers come streaming toward you, their wings nearly touching the mud flats, swishing the air when they pass around you. Like leaves tossed by wind, they scatter across the mud flats and immediately start probing beaks into mud in search of prey upon landing. I already miss the birds and the wonderful people that I had the honour of spending time with. Perhaps like the sandpipers that soon will be continuing their journey south, I too will return to James Bay next year to experience its magic once again. I am just back from two weeks of shorebird research along the coast of James Bay. Along with six others, I was stationed in the most northern of three Indigenous goose-hunting/ research camps. There I was immersed in the beauty of untouched wilderness, far removed from the vexation of automobiles, cellphones, television and Trump tweets. Our job was to conduct coastal shorebird surveys in the hours embracing high tide. The camp was a kilometre from the coast on the base of Longridge, one of three long points in our survey area. In addition to daily surveys, chores included hauling jugs of water from a creek half a kilometre from camp. Water was twice filtered before being used for cooking or drinking. Showers and baths were non-existent. Seven kilometres to the north was Bear Point on West Bay, our furthest survey point. At high tide one necessarily walked a tortuous route across Goosegrass-covered ridges separated by wide creeks and tiny inlets. At low tide walking was considerably easier across the vast mud flats on which shorebirds fed. Six kilometres south of Longridge was Paskwachi Point. Here at low tide, rocks of varying colours and sizes dotted the mud flats, making walking slightly difficult. While shorebirds fed on all mud flats between the three points, the endangered Red Knot, the main

JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Horton council has indicated it supports all-terrain-vehicle use on its section of the CN Trail if the ATVers can work out a deal with snowmobilers. However, that section may become a road to nowhere for ATVers with McNab/Braeside now joining Renfrew in banning them from their sections of the old CN line. After a presentation to Horton council by the Renfrew County ATV Club in June, councillors agreed that allowing ATVs on the trail could provide economic benefits to the area, said Mayor Bob Kingsbury. He noted that ATVers are a growing sector of the tourism market. The club said they would police ATV use on the trail, he added. However, there is a proviso to approving the ATVers' request, Kingsbury said. As snowmobilers have already negotiated use of the trail, the ATV club was told it had to run their plans by local snowmobile clubs first to ensure there are no conflicts. The contrasting decisions by Horton and McNab/Braeside councils have some ATVers wondering what will happen when those using the trail reach the border between the two townships. "Are they going to build a wall (across the trail)?" asked one person on social media. The same problem exists at the Renfrew end of the trail through Horton. In 2015, Renfrew agreed to allow ATVs in most areas of town except for main street through the downtown, Veterans Memorial Boulevard and the Millennium Trail, which is the CN Trail through town. ATVs will be allowed on the Algonquin (CP) Trail once it is complete. With the Arnprior-to-Renfrew section expected to be open before year's end, the ATV club was anticipating a loop route between the two towns using the CN and CP trails.
GOSHEN CEMETERY PLANS COLUMBARIUM JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com McNab-Braeside council has approved a special $9,000 advance to the Goshen Cemetery Board so it can build a 64-niche columbarium. Columbariums, which are usually built to house urns carrying cremated remains, are growing in popularity as cemeteries run out of space for the more traditional burials. Calling the request "very appropriate," Mayor Tom Peckett called the expenditure a "good investment for the township." He said he expected council will receive similar requests in the future. Once fully sold, the columbarium can provide profit to fund the purchase of the next unit and needed operating money to support the care and maintenance of the cemetery, CAO Lindsey Lee explained in a report to council. Council unanimously approved the funding from reserves at its Aug. 7 meeting. The money is to be repaid by gradually reducing the cemetery's annual grant over the next 12 years. Susan Gillan, speaking on behalf of the cemetery board at council's June 19 meeting, made the request for the amended funding. The township normally provides $1,000 annually to the Goshen Cemetery. It also provides annual funding for cemeteries in White Lake and Sand Point. Lee explained that the township helps fund the cemeteries in order to ensure they are not abandoned by their volunteer boards. If that happens the municipality would have to taken them over.

JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Despite facing a court challenge to the forced retirement of Guy Longtin, the Town of Renfrew has begun the process of hiring a new fire chief. An advertisement asking for applications for the position was circulated Aug. 9 to local media, Municipal World and the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs. The deadline to apply is Aug. 31. After 26 years as Renfrew fire chief, Longtin was abruptly told by town council on May 7 that it had instituted a mandatory re-
tirement age of 60 for the position. The 61-year-old Longtin was immediately relieved of his duties and offered a retirement package. Longtin is threatening court action in an attempt to force council to rescind its decision, arguing that the new policy is discriminatory and unfairly based on age. However, if it does eventually go to court, it is expected to take a year, likely more, for a resolution. There is also an effort to have the two sides mediate the dispute. Since Longtin's departure, Capt. Tim Hill has acted as temporary fire chief.
The job posting states that the fire chief is responsible for the overall management and operation of the town's fire department, which includes 10 full-time firefighters and 15-20 volunteer firefighters. The fire chief also serves as the town's community emergency management co-ordinator. The pay for the 35-houra-week job ranges between $121,223 and $132,778 depending on experience, supplemented by a "comprehensive benefits package." A full job description is available at www.renfrew.ca.

BLUES MUSIC UNDER BLUE SKY IN CALABOGIE DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

The weather was ideal for the annual Calabogie Blues and Ribfest, held last weekend at the ski resort. On Saturday afternoon, Joshua Arden had them up and dancing early in the afternoon, before ceding the giant stage to Wild T and the Spirit, Blackburn, Raoul and the Big Time, and Jack de Keyzer. That night featured Lil' Ed and the Blues Imperials, and the after-party VIP was Spencer Mackenzie. Plenty of area businesses benefited from having booths at the annual event. And even the Lions Club was on hand to accept donations. Calabogie Peaks holds the annual celebration of music and meat on bones as one of the many events that take place throughout the year.

PEGGY ANNE MCLEESE Ever wonder what it's like to stand on two hemispheres at the same time? Straddling the equator was just one of many unique experiences I had when I went last week on the WE School's Educator's Ecuador summer 2018 trip. Nineteen teachers from across North America were selected by a complex vetting process to participate in this unique professional learning service trip. The central purpose of this journey was to provide a first-hand experience of helping to develop a sustainable community. After flying in from all parts of North America late on July 21, our group met for the first time the next morning. Our initial day was one of adjustment as we learned to cope with Quito's high altitude. The altitude left many of us short of breath, which we quickly discovered during a walk-
ing tour of Quito's Old Town. This outing included participating in an ancient ceremony that asked the spirits for permission to visit Ecuador's capital. Lunch was in a park that overlooks the city. The day concluded with a visit to the Equator Museum, where we got our passport stamped and learned about traditional life in this region. The following day involved an eight-hour bus ride along recently flooded roads, before travelling the rest of the way along the Napo River section of the Amazon by boat, where we finally reached our destination: The We Organization's beautiful Minga Lodge resort. Minga is a local Amazonian word that has no direct translation. The closest meaning is the coming together of community to help build a structure such as a home or school. The days here were long, with breakfast beginning promptly at
Peggy McLeese/Submitted Peggy Anne McLeese, pictured third from left in back row, is one of 19 teachers from across North America selected by a complex vetting process to participate in the WE organization's educator trip to Ecuador. 8 a.m., followed by a morning activity, lunch, afternoon activities, supper and an educational forum in the evening. Most days didn't end before 10 p.m. The highly organized trip included the following highlights, a visit to a cocoa farm, a stay at a ffruit farmer's home, weapons training with a blow gun and
spear, a local cooking demonstration, and a visit to a nearby women's community centre for a lesson in bracelet making. The highlight for me was visiting a local shaman, who was also our tour guide's grandfather, and participating in a tobacco cleansing ceremony, which was remarkably similar to our own Indigenous people's smudging ceremony. Everyone felt noticeably relaxed afterward. All of the above activities involved taking a boat ride along the Amazon River to and from each location. The daily boat trips were definitely a favourite feature for all as it was one way to beat the extreme heat of the jungle. The service part of our trip was helping to build a kitchen for the school in the tiny village of Bella Vista. Our group made cement V walkways and cleared stones ffrom the site. The We Organization has been working with the
Bella Vista community for four years and expects to continue working with the community for a further four years before relocating to another region in the Amazon. In all, the trip to the Amazon hosted be the WE Organization was transformative. Not only did I come away with a host of new ffriendships and beautiful memories but, more importantly, I have ideas that will help shape my proffessional practice for years to come. I am tremendously honoured and grateful to have been chosen for such a life changing trip. Peggy Anne McLeese is a teacher with Renfrew Collegiate Institute's Program for Alternative Learning or Renfrew Alternative Learning for Youth (RALY). She recently received the I L Teach WE Award to honour all of her efforts over the years in the WE Schools program.

RCI MOVING BACK-TO-SCHOOL PARTY TO QUEEN STREET Renfrew council has agreed to a request from Renfrew Collegiate Institute to have Queen Street closed behind the school for a back-to-school street party Sept. 4. However, before being approved, the appeal generated discussion on how to ensure the partygoers don't spill onto neighbouring properties. Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI) held a "very successful" street party to celebrate the return of students last year, using Bonnechere Street, which council agreed to close for the morning. In his request to council, RCI principal Terry Hughes explained that the party, which will run from 8 to 11 a.m., is being moved to be "less of an inconvenience to
our neighbours." He reported that music will be played on outdoors speakers "at a reasonable volume" and inflatable structures will be set up on Stewart Field. "There are no residences on the street where we hope to have the road closure," he said.
Sherry Haaima/Metroland Renfrew Collegiate Institute is moving its street party that will welcome students back to school on Tuesday, Sept. 4 to Queen Street and Stewart Field. Last year it was held on Bonnechere Street where Grade 12 student Stephen Young hurdles a hockey stick in the obstacle course.

WARREN, WERTWYN SUCCESSFULLY DEFEND THEIR TITLES AT RGC GREG LECKY What a fantastic weekend we had for our 89th Club Championship at Renfrew Golf Club, presented by our friends at Ottawa Valley Physiotherapy and Sports Medicine! Our Members were treated to one of the best golf weekends of the season. Club Championship weekend started on Friday with the Junior Club Championship and our annual 18-hole par-3 event in the late afternoon. Congratulations to Emma White, for becoming our 2018 Jr. Girls Club Champion, and to Carter Jarrett, who is our 2018 Jr. Boys Club Champion. In the Par 3 Contest, 35 members played the par-3 course we set up. Bill James had the low score of 59 and narrowly beat Mary Abrams by 0.3 strokes, to win the net competition. On Saturday, many of the 78 participating members took advantage of the great conditions for scoring; 22 players shot net under-par scores, which included a couple of personal best scores. The rounds of the day were shot by Jim Senack and Andrew Rowat, who each shot net 63. On Saturday, R&D Insurance sponsored a hole-in-one contest on the 14th hole, where members had a chance to win $10,000. Unfortunately, no one is $10,000 richer, but we thank Susan McLeod and R&D Insurance for their great support. On Sunday, the conditions were just as nice for scoring, as once again it was hot and sunny with just a slight breeze. The final-round pressure may have affected scores, though, as there were not as many birdies, and the scores were a little higher on average. Congratulations to our 2018 Champions.

Not only did the organization hold its annual general meeting and awards banquet Aug. 16, it received praise and $3,000 at the Renfrew council meeting Aug. 14. With play wrapping up in mid-August, the association held its end-of-season dinner and presentations right after the annual meeting at the Ma-TeWay Activity Centre. RIOPELLE, FALCOLN ARE DRAGONFLY CLUB CHAMPIONS BILL RAINBOTH On Sunday, Aug. 12, Dragonfly Golf Links hosted a member appreciation night where free food, free samples from Triple Bogie Brewing Co, a trivia contest, and a musical performance from Dfly Star Terri-Lynn Mahusky (Smith) were offered to our members as a small way of thanking them for choosing Dragonfly Golf Links. This event fell in conjunction with the second and final day of our club championship. Congrats to the 2018 ladies champ, Donna Falcon, who defended her title from a hard charging Sandra Fleury who finished only two strokes behind. The Ladies B Flight champ was Kathy Hamilton, and Bonnie Beattie was low net. On the men's side, club champion is Justin Riopelle, who had a great two day total of 146. The A flight net winner was Chad Thompson. Mike Riopelle not only won the B flight Championship, but he also successfully defended his Men's Senior title. The B flight net winner was Mike McDonald. The Men's C flight winner was Andrew Dick, and the net champ was Joe Proulx. The Men's D flight champ was Garry Riopelle and the net champ was Eldon Ferguson. Congrats to all the winners and a huge thank you to all who participated in this year's event. Now on to our regular league play results, beginning with the Friday Ladies Stroke Play League. Sandra Fleury had a great game last week but could only finish in second place behind the two first place finishers, A.J White and Joanne Dumouchel. There was no secret hole winner. Monday Night Men's League mashed out another perfect night for golf, with the Monday Mashers finishing at the top of the standings. Renfrew Pizzaria boxed up the lowest gross score of the night and finished in the runner-up position. Closest to the pin winners were Dustin Howard and John Beardsley. For the second week in a row Valley Automation and Controls finished atop A flight. The Pack were victorious in B flight, to nip Beatty Construction by less than half a stroke. Closest to the pin winners were Bob Dillabough and Barry Belanger. On Wednesday the Abandoned Cubs had their golf games abandon them for a few weeks, but they came back this past Wednesday with reckless abandon to win A flight. The Rink Rats skated circles around the other B fight teams. Tim Lemoyre and Skyler Mullen were closest to the pin. Thursday Ladies Night was in the first of a two week competition, so there are no final results to report. However I can report that Amanda Cameron was closest to the pin on No. 5, Julie Mahusky was closest to the pin on No. 13, and Jenny Dick was closest on No. 18.

Earlier this summer, Trinity-St. Andrew's hosted its annual chicken barbecue, doling out more than 800 dinners to hungry community members. A number of volunteers worked to make the event a success. The popular annual event requires plenty of elbow grease. This generous group is among the many volunteers who make the event a success each year. Activity is just as hectic indoors. Among the volunteers helping to prepare 800 chicken dinners are, from left, Shirley Ziebarth, Susan Humphries, Barbara Symington, Barbara Moogk, Florence Wilson and Barb Symington.

BONNECHERE MANOR CELEBRATES 60 YEARS OF SERVICE JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com A Renfrew "gem" celebrated its 60th anniversary with a garden party and musical celebration Aug. 13. Bonnechere Manor residents invited their families, day program clients, staff, volunteers, community neighbours and dignitaries to help them celebrate 60 years of long-term care ser-
vice in the Renfrew area. It was on that date exactly 60 years ago that Renfrew County opened the first Bonnechere Manor to new residents, at 782 Raglan St. Fast-forward to 1995, and the construction of a stateof-the-art new facility at the current location on 470 Albert St. Since that time, the Renfrew Rotary Club and numerous local people and businesses contributed to the auditorium addition
known as Renfrew Rotary Hall. It was only fitting that the old-fashioned (1958) garden party was held in the hall and adjoining courtyard garden. About 250 guests enjoyed entertainment, including the manor's own resident, staff and volunteer choir singing Summer of '58, a variation of the popular Bryan Adams song written by choir director Colleen Kunopas-

ki. It was one of the choir's award-winning pieces in this year's Renfrew Rotary Music Festival. Other local entertainers included Dave Hurley, The Countrymen and Dennis Riopelle, who welcomed guests as they arrived at the front door. Renfrew Mayor Don Eady called the Manor a "real gem" that has provided a "rich tradition" of service and a "lot of employment" with "very little or no complaints." "I know how precious this is," he added, in presenting the Manor with a scroll from the Town of Renfrew thanking it for "60 years of providing quality care to this community." Renfrew Reeve Peter Emon praised the longserving dedicated staff who ensure "they uphold the strong reputation for quality care that the town relies on." Renfrew County health committee chair Janice Visneskie Moore, who attended with vice-chair Bob Kingsbury, praised 1958 Warden John L. Hodgins and his council for having the foresight to build the Manor, and Warden Leslie
Green's 1995 council for approving the construction of the "beautiful home" that has provided "care and comforts for residents" ever since. "It is no wonder residents and families highly recommend Bonnechere Manor to their friends and family and the home has a waiting list of over 200 people," she said. The Manor's director of long-term care, Shelley Sheedy, thanked management and staff who assisted residents in planning the day's festivities. The residents' council suggested a barbecue and entertainment was the best way to mark the occasion, she said. Another Renfrew institution, Odi's King Burger, provided hamburgers, along with Brum's lemonade. Popcorn and ice cream filled out the menu to fit in with the 1958 theme. The event's MC, the Manor's client programs supervisor, Erin Wilson, noted that in 1958 postage stamps cost four cents, a Ford Fairlane $2,000, and the most popular names were Mary, Susan, Patricia, Joe, Robert and John.
As well as having 180 long-term care beds, Bonnechere Manor provides a wide range of services, including 24-hour nursing care, accommodation, meals, physiotherapy programs, and a variety of social and recreational activities. In addition to longterm care services, the Manor also offers a variety of community services such as respite care, an adult day program in Cobden and Renfrew, and a Parkinson's support group. GALA TO HAVE 60TH THEME The Manor's fundraising co-ordinator Claire Ullrich noted that the 60th anniversary party does not end with the garden party. The Bonnechere Manor Foundation's annual gala, on Saturday, Oct. 20, will also feature a 60th-anniversary theme. People who buy tickets before Aug. 31 will be entered into an early bird draw for a chance to win two tickets to see Elton John in concert. The tickets were donated by Aikenhead's PharmaChoice Drug Store. For tickets, call Ullrich at 613 432-4873, ext. 1252.

RENFREW COUNTY FIDDLERS CELEBRATE 40TH ANNIVERSARY What a party. The Renfrew County Fiddlers celebrated their 40 years as an association at the Renfrew Armouries on June 9. The doors opened at 5:30 p.m. to an influx of fun-filled members and nonmembers planning for an evening of dancing and celebration. The hall was decorated with musical notes, dancers, fiddles and flowers. A slide presentation was ready to be shown on one of the walls for everyone to watch as the evening unfolded. The Renfrew County Fiddlers' musicians led by Randy Foster opened the evening and set the mood for an evening of dancing, socializing and laughter. MC Guy Jamieson kept the evening on schedule. Four of the original Renfrew County Fiddle members - Joe Quilty, Norman Warren, Mary Wright and Jamieson - were present. They were honoured with plaques of appreciation for their years of dedication and service to the association. Quilty with his wife Madge were initial founders of the Renfrew County Fiddlers. He, at 101 years of age, is still very interested in the association. In his presentation, president Bob Prudhomme said the Ottawa Valley owes a debt of gratitude to the foursome who brought fiddle music to all parts of the Valley over the 40 years. Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski was present to congratulate the four founding members but also paid tribute to
all of the musicians who have been part of the association for the past 40 years. "We here in the Valley love our music and our culture," he said. Following the formal presentations, the evening turned to music beginning with two sets of stepdancers. Terri-Lynn Mahusky Smith provided the fiddle music with ease as each step dancer gave a crowd-pleasing performance. Willem, Ali and Marikje Devries and Andrew and Beatrice Herwig each performed solos and they all combined to end their performance with a smashing ending of fantastic step-dancing. Special guests, the Douglas Connection, took to the stage and the floor soon filled to capacity as usual when this excellent band begins to play. Ivan and Vivian Hicks, special guests from New Brunswick, pleased the crowd with their variety of waltzes, polkas, and round and square dancing. Members were so pleased to have the "wonderful entertainers" help to make the party an evening to remember. A light meal by Schmidt's Catering was served at 11 p.m. and the Renfrew County Fiddlers musicians closed the evening on a jubilant note. It was an evening of new and old friendships coming together to celebrate 40 years of fiddle music, step-dancing and background music with guitars and piano. This article was submitted by Darlene Meleskie of the Renfrew County Fiddlers.

CAREER OPPORTUNITY
FATHER FORCED TO DRIVE HER HOME AT MIDNIGHT, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column
Why bad Marguirite would want to come to my house to spend a night was beyond me. She would be leaving electric lights and flush toilet! But her mother had phoned and said the long summer holidays would soon be over, and her young daughter (who nobody liked at the Northcote School) would very much like to sleep over one night at my house before school started back in September. My sister Audrey wasn't at all pleased. She would have to sleep on the creton couch in the kitchen to give up her bed she shared with me. Mother telling her it would only be for one night did little to stop Audrey's complaining. Marguirite arrived with her mother in their brand new car, and she bounded out with a little leather suitcase, which caused my brother Emerson to wonder if she planned on moving in. The boys had been warned to behave, and supper,

to my complete surprise, went off without a hitch. Marguirite even had seconds. She and I played house with my dolls until it was bedtime, and then we climbed the stairs, Mother making sure the three boys were settled down first. I saw her wag a finger at their doorway. She didn't have to say a word. They knew what that meant. I should have known the night wouldn't pass without Marguirite causing a stir. Mother barely had her foot on the last step going downstairs with the coal oil lamp, when Marguirite said she had to use the privy. The chamber pot under the bed, she said, was out of the question. Of course, I had to go with her. We passed through the kitchen where Mother and Father were still sitting. Audrey glared at Marguirite from the creton couch. The trip out to the back house was followed by three others, one right after the other. The fourth time down, Marguirite stopped dead right in the middle of the kitchen floor and started bawling her eyes out. "I want to go home," she wailed. Well, there was no way you could call her mother on the phone at that hour of the night. The ring would waken the entire neighbourhood of Northcote. Father knew what he had to do. He pulled his overalls on
over his long underwear, while Marguirite tore upstairs to get her genuine leather suitcase, passing Audrey who was on her way upstairs to reclaim her bed. By the time Father got the old Model T out of the drive shed, Marguirite was already outside on the back stoop. Everyone but Audrey was wide-awake, and Mother said there was no reason we all couldn't have a cup of hot chocolate before going back up to bed. By the time Father got back, the old kitchen clock was just about to strike midnight. Emerson said we might as well stay up the rest of the night and play euchre. Father never said a word. Looking like a thunder cloud, he headed right into the bedroom off the kitchen. Mother said at breakfast the next morning, he didn't even stop long enough to take his clothes off. DREAM TEAM
Here's a good way to beat the heat - spend the afternoon on the water. Head to the Burnstown beach and boat launch for an afternoon of fun on the Madawaska River this coming Sunday. We'll start with a shoreside barbecue (hotdogs, drinks, snacks) from noon - 1 p.m., followed by a group paddle departing from the boat launch at 1 p.m. (approximately two hour duration). As an alternative to the group paddle, there will be games for the kids at the adjacent Burn-
stown beach. A limited number of watercraft (paddleboards, kayaks and canoes) can be reserved by contacting Scott Conroy at 613-6235756 ext. 232, or sconroy@mcnabbraeside.com. Cost for the barbecue, watercraft usage and paddle participation is $10 per family.
There's not many summer weekends left, so make the most of them! The Burnstown beach and boat launch is located at 1537 Calabogie Rd. This event is jointly sponsored by the Braeside/ McNab Township and the Bonnechere River Watershed Project.

RENFREW BLIZZARD-LOVERS RAISE $3,500 FOR CHEO JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com The Renfrew Dairy Queen raised almost $3,500 in donations and Blizzard sales for the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario on Miracle Treat Day. "We want to thank the people for coming out and supporting the effort," said Dairy Queen's Bonnie Lesk. "We all had a great time." Staff got into the spirit of Miracle Treat Day Aug. 9, dressing up as customers flooded into the restaurant to buy Blizzards and support CHEO. The final total raised was $3,474.85. "This would not have been possible without you, our loyal DQ fans. Thank you for making 2018 our most successful year yet," said a statement from Dairy Queen's head office. About $2 million was raised across Canada for Children's Miracle Network hospitals. In the past 16 years, DQ restaurants in Ottawa and area have raised more than $1.5 million to help the doctors, nurses and staff at CHEO treat 500,000 children each year. The funds go toward health care services, pediatric medical equipment and charitable care.
RENFREW, ARNPRIOR A&WS RAISE FUNDS TO 'BEAT' MS
insideottawavalley.com
JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com A&W restaurants in Renfrew and Arnprior participated in a fundraiser Aug. 16 in support of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. A&W donated $2 for each teen burger sold that day at its 930 locations across Canada in the 10th annual Burgers to Beat MS fundraiser. Customers also donated to the cause by buying $2 limited-edition stickers, contributing to the counter donation jar, rounding up their bill and directly at www.BurgersToBeatMS.ca. A&W has raised about $11 million in the nine previous years and had a goal of $2 million this year. Money raised helps the MS Society of Canada to fund MS research, programs and services, as well as advocacy efforts aimed at improving the quality of life for Canadians living with and affected by the disease. Canada has one of the highest rates of MS in the world, with an average of 11 Canadians diagnosed with the disease every day. Women are three times more likely than men to be afflicted by MS.
