CRASH VICTIM REMEMBERED AT COBDEN FAIR OPENING JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Dignitaries officiating at the opening of the Cobden Fair Aug. 24 paid tribute to the local man killed in a motorcycle crash the night before. The ceremony included a minute of silence in memory of Adam MacGregor, the 38-year-old Cobden man who was killed about 9:30 p.m. Aug. 23 when his motorcycle collided with a transport truck at the corner of Highway 17 and Forester's Falls Road. "Our community has suffered a huge loss," said Whitewater Region Mayor Hal Johnson. He noted MacGregor was a "great family man" who is leaving behind a wife, two children and another one coming. Johnson added that he was also a "valuable member of the community." As a volunteer firefighter, "he helped save many lives and homes," he said. Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski added his condolences, saying "our hearts go out to the family." Opening ceremonies MC Ted Barron agreed and said it shows people should endeavour to enjoy every minute of their lives "as you don't know what tomorrow will bring."

it doesn't mean people have to attend all five days of the fair to get their money's worth. They can share the pass with friends, family or neighbours, she explained. A person can use the pass to get themselves and four others into the fair at one time or spread it over the five days for their own benefit. The new pass system translates into a daily admission fee of $8, down from $10 last year under the old system. There is free admission for children three and under if they aren't using the rides. Parking on-site costs $5. The fair's board of directors made the decision to change the price structure "to make it more feasible for families to attend," explained Dobec. It was instituted with the blessing of midway provider, Carter Shows, she added. "We're very excited about it," she said, noting it's the trend for fairs. The Shawville, Cobden, Arnprior and Beachburg fairs all have a pay-one-price policy. "It makes sense," she said. "It makes it much more affordable for families ... and it gives them more money to spend while at the fair. You can keep your money for your bacon on the bun." Dobec said it's taken some fairgoers time to get used to the changeover of midway provider three years ago from World's Finest Shows to Carter Shows. However, it helps

Carter Shows will be bringing a newly-purchased ferris wheel and 20 thrill and kiddie rides, along with some "surprises." They are also bringing back the bingo tent after finding out last year it is a big hit at the fair, she added. Opening night at the fair features the always well-attended demolition derby for the 23rd time. Xtreme Productions will be running the event again, starting at 7 p.m. with four-, six- and eightcylinder categories. Entries are taken right up to derby day as long as there is room. Valley singer, songwriter and storyteller Wayne Rostad plays the grandstand Thursday at 8 p.m. A popular draw when he played the fair in 2009, his type of entertainment fits in well with the fair's rural nature. Saskatchewan new country band, the Hunter Brothers, are stopping off Friday for the 8 p.m. grandstand show on their way to Hamilton for the Canadian Country Music Awards, where they are up for three major awards. Fiddler/singer Greg Williams will open for the Hunter Brothers and play later in the beer tent. Dobec said there's also been a lot of interest in Saturday's headliner, Canadian rocker Sass Jordan. Ottawa R&B band Beats'n Keys opens for her and plays afterwards in the beer tent. Beer tent entertain-

ment Saturday afternoon includes Jerry and Sky Paposak at 2 p.m., Jordan Legg at 3 p.m., Mitch Desilites at 4 p.m., Jordan Dubeau at 5 p.m. and Fifth Street at 6 p.m. While there are various animal and 4-H shows ongoing Thursday through Sunday, the horse events are a major attraction for the fair's final three days. Particularly "beautiful" is the North American Sixhorse Hitch Classic both Friday and Saturday at 1 p.m. in the horse ring, said Dobec. This year on Sunday, a pony pull at 10 a.m. has been added to the traditional Pinnacle International Horse Drawing Festival at 1 p.m. At 2 p.m. the horses are again in the spotlight with the arrival of the RCMP Musical Ride in front of the grandstand. "Come early to get a seat," cautions Dobec, adding that a "special guest" will be singing O Canada before the performance. Fairgoers always have plenty to see in the "phenomenal exhibit hall," noted Dobec. "We're very proud of our maple syrup section," she said, noting it's the largest in the Valley, with 89 entries last year. In inviting everyone to the fair, Renfrew Fair Board president Jim Enright credited sponsors, exhibitors, volunteers and members of the fair board for making the event such a success for so many years.

membered. The two will be dearly missed," she added. Tennant urged fairgoers to take in the exhibits and stock shows. "Don't let them get lost among the midway and vendors," she said. "The fair exists because of agriculture." She thanked the fair's volunteers, sponsors and supporters for making the fair possible. "They say it takes a village to raise a child, well it takes an entire community to hold a fair." Saying he was delighted to see so many people at the fair, Renfrew-NipissingPembroke MPP John Yakabuski noted without the volunteers working hard behind the scenes there would be no fair. Whitewater Region Mayor Hal Johnson said that in a changing world it's satisfying to know some traditions are surviving, especially those that are "bringing our communi-

POLICE BOARD CHAIR SEEKS A-B COUNCIL SEAT JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com After several years chairing Admaston/Bromley's police services board, Jamieson Dyer is ready to take what he's learned to the council table. "I can add a different voice ... that from a young family perspective," he said, noting he has more time to serve on AdmastonBromley council now that his daughter has turned five. Dyer said he has no quarrel with the current council's direction, but feels he could help in a positive way by utilizing his talents in accessing funding for community associations, events and improvements. services board chair, he organized and dug up financial support for such initiatives as the highly successful bicycle rodeos at Admaston and St. Michael's schools and for RIDE programs and other community safety projects. When it comes to procuring grants, "I could help staff juggle through the bureaucracy ... and save the taxpayers' money," he said. "I could be that voice to catch some of that (grant money) that was missed before. The extra effort could really prove worthwhile." Pointing to the township's wealth of recreation, church farm safety and other community groups, he said they could benefit by partnering more often with the township in seeking untapped funding. Dyer grew up in Arnprior, received a degree in business administration and biology in Peterborough, and became an educator. He and his wife moved to Admaston/Bromley to a Desmond Road property severed by

With parks and conservation enforcement experience as well as knowledge in running meetings, he successfully applied to be the provincial appointee when Admaston-Bromley formed a police services board and within a year became chair. "I saw an opportunity to give back to the community," he said. He has taken a leave of absence during the campaign but will be "perfectly content" to return to the board if unsuccessful in the election, he added. Being qualified to teach

all grades, he is in demand around the county, but most often supply teaches at his home school in Admaston. He also coaches Timbits soccer. His interactions with the township's youngsters and their parents have given him "a pretty good insight into the community and what their values are." It will allow him to bring new thoughts to council from an education and recreation perspective, he said, adding that he has ideas to bring new apprenticeships, career opportunities and summer jobs to the township. The enthusiasm of Admaston/Bromley residents to volunteer "makes me so proud of this community," he said. "It makes you really want to advocate on their behalf." Dyer is joined by Kevin LeGris, Robert Dick, Michael Quilty, Angela Field and Robert Hall in seeking four councillor seats in the Oct. 22 election.

JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Angela Field is involved in so many community endeavours, people might wonder if she has the time to be an Admaston/ Bromley councillor. But it's the awareness and input from the many residents she's met while serving in so many volunteer capacities that has her aspiring to serve them on council in the next term. She experienced the power of community action first-hand when she helped spearhead the recreation committee's successful efforts to replace the Admaston school rink. While she noted the current

council has "done a great job," she feels she has "something new to offer ... a different perspective." The owner with her husband of a dairy farm on Foy Road and mother of four children aged five to 11, Field said she would be a "younger, fresh new voice." Being conversant with the needs of both dairy and beef farmers as well as families would be a plus when serving on council, she said. The only female candidate in the race, she suggested that it would be beneficial to have a women's voice on council. "We tend to see things a bit differently, not saying that's necessarily bad or good," she said.

However, a mix of ages and genders usually makes a council stronger, she added. After 10 years being a driving force on the Admaston recreation committee, "I feel I have more to offer the community than just running recreation programs," she said. She pointed out that she is familiar with a councillor's job, having worked with them on several recreation and business and development initiatives. "I got to see behind the scenes at the county and municipal council levels," she said. Field noted she is excited about several upcoming opportunities that will face the new council. "I'd

like to be part of it." Field grew up in the small community of Wahnapitae near Sudbury and earned agriculture and horticulture diplomas at Kemptville College. She moved to Admaston/Bromley 15 years ago and, besides working on the dairy farm, is the dairy educator for county schools "teaching kids about farming." Field is also parent council chair at Admaston Public School, Renfrew Junior Fair chair, a scout leader with 1st Renfrew Scouting and warden of the Scout's Camp Legewade on Hurd's Lake. She is also a big fan of horses and their therapeutic powers. With all her children now in school, she feels she has the time and flexibility to add council duties to her busy schedule.

DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com The former fire chief in Renfrew has followed through on his threat and filed a lawsuit worth $1.35 million against the municipality on Aug. 23. Guy Longtin wants his job back (with back pay) plus compensation for damages caused, he said, by the town's refusal to extend drug benefits for an ill family member. He also wants town officials to take mandatory human rights sensitivity training. Reeve Peter Emon is disappointed at the latest turn in the ongoing case that began when council voted in May to enforce mandatory retirement for all fire personnel at age 60. Longtin is 61. "It's unfortunate. We feel that we made an attempt to settle the dispute," Emon said. "We've paid out all that we owed, and benefits continue as the employment contract contends." Longtin is backed on social media and elsewhere by a vocal group of supporters. Emon denies that the town appears like 'bad guys'. "No, I don't think so. Like I said, we've paid out the benefits. Suspects have been identified and charges are pending after thefts from Talk of the Town Car Wash, and Squeaky Clean Car Wash in Renfrew. Coin machines were targeted and emptied by two males and a female suspect. Const. Chris Colton is leading the investigation. The Renfrew Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated 269 calls for service between Monday. Aug. 20 and Sunday, Aug. 26. A Motorola handheld radio was stolen from a taxi in Renfrew overnight on Aug. 19 or 20. The Vincent's Taxi was parked in the area of Patrick and Bonnechere Street at the time. Const. Janet Guy is investigating. An arrest warrant has been issued for a female after a theft investigation at the LCBO store in Renfrew on Monday, Aug. 20. Two females entered the store after 11 a.m. One unidentified suspect distracted an employee while the other suspect placed three large bottles of alcohol in a large bag. The two then paid for a small item and left the store together in a pick-up truck. The employees were suspicious and immediately reviewed surveillance video where they observed the theft. The responding officer was able to identify one of the suspects. Bonnie Sue Pirie, 49, of Bris-

tol is wanted for theft under $5,000 and fail to comply with a recognizance. Const. Marc Bennett is leading the investigation. Police are investigating a similar theft in Arnprior at the LCBO on Wednesday, Aug. 22. Two females entered the store and were acting in a suspicious manner. Employees checked video surveillance after the two left the store and discovered three large bottles of liquor had been stolen. They left the store in a beige Ford pick-up truck. Const. Amedeo Jean-Louis is investigating.

GIVE NEW TICKET PRICE A FAIR SHAKE The grouches upset at Renfrew Fair's new price policy should get off their high horses. Instead of seeing the move to a more family-friendly pay-one-price admission ticket as a rip-off, they should embrace it as an opportunity. But it's an opportunity that demands they take action now. Well, at least before 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31. That's the deadline to take advantage of the fair's five-admission pass deal. The only downside to the multi-pass option is that early deadline. Unfortunately, there will always be people not paying attention (likely many), leaving them surprised by the earlier cut-off. But for those in tune with the changes and not a fan of the fair's midway rides, get out and buy the $40 five-day pass. If you use it wisely, it can be a real deal. It can get you into the fair for $8 (compared with $10 last year). Say you're a senior (the main complainants about the change, so it seems) who wants to avoid the crowds Friday and Saturday and go to the fair Thursday and Sunday to see Wayne Rostad and the RCMP Musical Ride. Buy the pass and take a companion with you or let someone else have it for the other three days. The fair board emphasizes that you can use the pass in a variety of ways. You can get together with your like-minded friends and buy one for all of you to use. Or purchase one and give the admissions you're not using to a friend. Or make a new friend by giving it to a stranger, perhaps the person behind you in line. Or arrange to donate any unused admissions to someone who might not otherwise go to the fair. There are plenty of community organizations that could make good use of the admissions, from the anti-poverty network and Community Living to mental health and seniors groups. This could be a chance to foster some real community spirit and neighbourly bonding. Everyone loves to go to the fair even if they don't have much or any money to spend once inside. There is plenty to see, and some of the best things at the fair are free. All the wonderful discoveries in the exhibit hall, Barnet barn and various show rings are worth the admission alone. Especially when you throw in the evening's entertainment or Sunday's RCMP Musical Ride. If you're still unconvinced the pass is a good deal, don't think you can revisit the past by attending other Valley fairs. Shawville has had the all-inclusive admission ticket in one form or the other since 1983. Cobden, Beachburg and Arnprior have also adopted the oneprice policy. It must make sense if the down-to-earth folks who run those fairs think so. So don't dawdle. Get out there, take advantage of the $40 admission pass, use your fair share and don't let the rest go to waste. If exploited properly, the new ticket policy, it's fair to say, will benefit all fair fans, from ride-loving young families to dyed-in-the-wool seniors.

RVH sonographers are ahead of the curve providing quality care Patients at Renfrew Victoria Hospital can trust in their community hospital to meet and exceed professional standards. The sonographers who provide ultrasounds at Renfrew Victoria Hospital are proud to demonstrate their commitment to providing safe, effective, ethical care through professional regulation. Recently, with the input of many levels of government, sonographers and other medical professions, legislation (MRIT Act) was put in place by the Ministry of Health and LongTerm Care to regulate sonographers through a professional college. “Our sonographers have always been at the top of their field having met all

of Sonography Canada and American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) standards and continuing education requirements. Now sonographers will be certified the same as other medical radiation technologists specialized in X-ray, CT and MRI,” says Lisa Wherry, RVH Manager, Medical Imaging. When patients go to RVH for an ultrasound, they can be assured they will be treated by a regulated health professional like they would when they see a doctor, nurse or surgeon. “This certification is evidence that patients, donors and the community at large can put their trust in RVH,” says Sarah Robinson,

TOWN OF RENFREW FUNDS WORK ON SIDE STREETS JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com The Town of Renfrew is not only reconstructing its main street, it is tackling some of the side streets this year. In a report to council Aug. 14, the development and works committee reported there is funding available for the full rehabilitation of Carswell Street from Prince to Renfrew Avenue as well as work on Prince and Vimy streets. The work plan also includes more work on the Munroe culvert near Central school. Rehabilitation of Arnprior Avenue and Ross Street are recommended for 2019 and Carswell between Renfrew and Arnprior avenues for either 2019 or a later year. On the behest of Mayor Don Eady, the committee asked town staff to prepare a cost per metre esti-

mate for road rehabilitation to confirm the funding is sufficient for the projects.

Speeders On Vimy Could speed bumps be included when Vimy Boulevard's turn for work comes up later this year? Probably not, but Renfrew's development and works committee has agreed to place more signage on the street after three residents addressed members last month with complaints about speeders. Gerald Normandeau, Connie Robillard and Gary Troop expressed concerns about pedestrian safety on Vimy because of speeding vehicles. The committee discussed such solutions as speed bumps and police enforcement before agreeing to the placement of more "no exit" and "children at play" signs in the area.

VIMY OAK PROPOSED FOR LOW SQUARE CENOTAPH JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com The family of a soldier killed in the battle of Vimy Ridge has asked for permission to plant a commemorative Vimy oak near the Renfrew cenotaph. The oak would honour the memory of Pte. Thomas Samuel Walker, one of 66 local soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War. His name is among those etched on the back of the cenotaph in Low Square. The proposal is related to the Vimy Foundation Canada Oak tree legacy project that oversees the planting of trees from descendants of acorns collected on the Vimy battlefield 100 years ago. The Renfrew request was made to the town by C. Godard of Ottawa, the grandniece of Walker,

COUNCIL RED LIGHTS BARNET CONNECTOR JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Connecting Fourth and Fifth streets with Barnet Boulevard would be too expensive. That's the conclusion of Renfrew council's development and works committee. Establishing an intersection in that area would add between $30,000 and $40,000 to the current Barnet Boulevard reconstruction cost, a report from Morrison Hershfield indicates. After discussing public consultation and the cost, the committee decided the town shouldn't proceed with the additional work, council was informed at its Aug. 14 meeting.

on behalf of the Epps and Godard families. At its Aug. 14 meeting, council referred the request to its parks and recreation committee. Reeve Peter Emon said he is hopeful a spot can be found off to the side of the cenotaph. If it's too close, it could get trampled, he noted. In her letter, Godard said the Renfrew Legion indicated it is ready to assist the effort. She reports that Walker was born in Killaloe and was a Renfrew resident and Renfrew Collegiate student when, at the age of 16, he joined the 130th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. As a member of the 4th Canadian Division's 75th Infantry Battalion, he was engaged in the struggle to take Hill 145 at Vimy. He was killed in action on April 9, 1917 at the age of 17. Pierre

Burton's book, Vimy, relates that Walker was quietly reading his mail in a shell hole when a bullet from Hill 145 struck him in the neck, killing him instantly. He was buried on the battlefield by two fellow soldiers who risked their lives to do so. Godard said planting a Vimy oak gives Renfrew an opportunity to be part of the Vimy legacy. "For our family, it is an opportunity to continue to honour and remember our hero, our soldier; our great grand-uncle, and the thousands of Canadians who lost their lives fighting for our country in the cause of peace and freedom." She explained that her family will sponsor the project by paying for the tree and its delivery from a nursery in return for the town looking after its planting and ongoing care.

MUNICIPAL OFFICE HOURS CHANGE TO 8 TO 4 Renfrew town hall will be closing a half-hour earlier as of Sept. 1, after a study showed only a few people seek service after 4 p.m. When town hall reopens after Labour Day, the hours of operation will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. However, the change comes with the proviso that if there are a "significant number of complaints from the public" regarding the hours, then closing time

will revert to 4:30 p.m. At its Aug. 14 meeting, Renfrew council approved the recommendation by its human resources committee. The decision was based on a survey that indicated that 10 people showed up at the clerk/ treasury department front counter from June 25 to July 24 between 4 to 4:30 p.m. Staff also answered eight telephone inquiries during that time. The change will also affect the development and works department, on town hall's second floor.

The highlight of the fair is on Sunday afternoon when the RCMP Musical Ride performs in front of the grandstand. Special thanks to our sponsors, exhibitors, volunteers and members of the fair board who help make the Renfrew Fair an annual successful event. PLEASE RECYCLE OUR PAPER

Ever since the world famous RCMP Musical Ride delighted Renfrew fairgoers in 2004, fair general manager Judy Dobec has been trying to get it to return. Her persistence has paid off. The iconic Canadian attraction will perform in front of the grandstand on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 2 p.m., the last major event of the fiveday Renfrew Fair.

"We're very pleased to have the RCMP Musical Ride coming to the fair," Dobec said. "There was a tremendous response (when the ride played the 150th fair 14 years ago)." After the ride, there will be a meet-and-greet where people can get their pictures taken with their favourite riders and horses, she said. "It's a remarkable chance to see a Canadian institution." Although she puts in a

request to have the popular spectacle back every year, Dobec said it was a pleasant surprise when officials contacted her to ask if they could come this year. They originally wanted to come Saturday, but the fair has several horse shows already that day, so Sunday was chosen. Dobec noted that in 2004 the ride was supposed to entertain on the fair's Thursday evening, but the performance was washed out by

the tail end of Hurricane Frances. So the riders rearranged their schedule so they could perform on the Sunday afternoon of the fair instead, Dobec said. "They were very accommodating." The world-renowned troop of 32 horses and riders, which is headquartered at Rockcliffe Stables in east Ottawa, will be returning from a 28-show tour of British Columbia. They will take a break before playing

the Maxville Fair Saturday, Sept. 8 and Renfrew Sept. 9. The Musical Ride is also scheduled to perform at the Richmond Fair Sept. 12 before going to the U.S. for a weeklong stint in late September. Every year, the Musical Ride brings its show to about 50 communities across the country with a variety of figures and drills choreographed to music. The show provides the public with an opportunity to

experience the heritage and traditions of the RCMP and raise funds for local charities across Canada. The ride's horses are trained at a breeding farm in Pakenham. The Musical Ride was developed in 1876 by early members of the North-West Mounted Police to display their riding abilities and entertain local communities. The first recorded public display of the Musical Ride was in Regina, Saskatchewan in 1901. For more on the musical ride, visit www.rcmpgrc.gc.ca/en/musical-ride.

With more than 845,000 YouTube views and four million streams in Canada, they're no strangers to Canadian country music fans. And while they've certainly logged their fair share of big venues, Ty Hunter said the group is just as enthusiastic about smaller shows such as their upcoming Renfrew appearance. "It's really exciting, the size doesn't matter," said Ty. "Every venue offers something a bit different. You can really engage with a small audience in a way you can't with a larger one. They all hold a special place in our hearts." They've been through Ontario but this is the brothers' first visit to Renfrew. "We're very honoured to be able to play in your community," said Ty. "We don't take any of these experiences for granted. We're really looking forward to seeing everyone." Renfrew is lucky to have snagged a Hunter Brothers show, as the guys are in Ontario for the Canadian Country Music Awards in Hamilton, at which they're up for a number of honours, including: group/duo of the year, rising start, interactive artists or group of the year. Gavin Michael Booth, director of videos for both Born and Raised and Those Were the Nights, is also up for video director of the year.

"It'll be a busy time," said Ty. "We'll be in Hamilton and then driving out for the fair and then back to Hamilton." What should those coming to the show Friday night expect? "Expect the unexpected," said Ty with a laugh. "You can expect a lot of harmonies, we grew up singing together. It'll be a high energy performance with lots of crowd engagement." Does he have a favourite song to perform? "I think something really special is when we play a single that's been played on the radio," said Ty. "It's a very unique experience when all of a sudden you have people singing back to you. It's a milestone for any artist." To date, the Hunter Brothers have won two 2017 SCMA Awards, for Group of the Year and Emerging Artist Award, and were nominated for three others. They were nominated for 2017 CCMA Award for Interactive Artist of the Year. The group released their debut album Getaway in March 2017, which peaked at #1 on iTunes Canada's country album charts Their online video parody, Combine Got Stuck, reached 1.3 million views in two days organically. The Hunter Brothers will hit the main stage at 8 p.m. Friday night, Sept. 7, at the Renfrew Fair.

Rock icon Sass Jordan participated in a Q&A with Metroland Media in the lead-up to her Sept. 8 headline act at the Renfrew Fair. After multiple Canadian chart hit singles in the late '80s and early '90s, Jordan moved to a different musical stage to play the lead role in a Janis Joplin off-Broadway hit. Along with other musicals, she guest starred in TV sitcoms and reality shows. The Juno recipient and twotime nominee is married to Derek Sharp, current lead singer of The Guess Who. We reached her on the road somewhere in northern New Brunswick. Q - What would 1980s-you like most about the artist you are today? A - I would appreciate the fact that I have a sense of humor about how ridiculous the whole thing is, and that I am a 'lifestyle' artist as opposed to just a musical singularity. I would like that I am real and raw, and not manufactured. For an artist to really interest me now, I mean, enough to dig into the catalogue and be interested in new stuff they put out, there has to be more to them than just music. I like to have a sense of them as fellow human beings. Q - What excites you about today's music scene in Canada and/

or beyond? A - I'm actually non-partisan when it comes to music, generally. I am not motivated by imaginary geographical borders - so the nationality of the musicians is not a factor. I am excited by the same thing I've always been excited by - great songwriting and brilliant performances, no matter what the genre. I'm continually amazed by the power of music to uplift, to inspire, to ease discomfort, and to bring people together. I think there has been far too much emphasis on separation of people through music (and everything else) for the past while, and it's time for music to be celebrated as a medium that has the potential to bring us together, again. Sadly that's not going to happen with the astounding amount of what I call 'Robot Music' that is still currently dominating the 'music scene', but there are real artists out there, here and there. I think it's always been this way. Q - What experience awaits fans at the Renfrew show? A - A real, live band of seasoned musicians that actually play and sing live for real - no extras. A wonderful celebration - of life, of music and of community the community we create when we all come together under the auspices of a 'rock show'! Catch Sass Jordan's show Saturday night at 8 p.m. at the Renfrew Fair.

He's an Ottawa Valley favourite. There's sure to be a good crowd on hand at the Renfrew Fair Thursday night for Wayne Rostad, the main stage headliner for the evening. Rostad, a singer, songwriter, entertainer, MC, host and author, is marking his return to the Renfrew Fair. He played here in 2009 to a sizeable crowd. "Wayne is, without a doubt, one of the most commanding and compelling performers anywhere. He takes to the stage with his guitar in hand, a powerful one-man show that keeps audiences spellbound with his songs, stories, humour and passion," says the entertainer's website. "He has that very rare and special ability to make everyone feel that he is singing for them and them alone. His television show travels have given Wayne a unique understanding and perspective of Canada and its people, making him exceptional among Canadian entertainers." On stage, Wayne has shared billings and rubbed shoulders with many of the best entertainers in the business - Johnny Cash, Ricky Skaggs, Charlie Pride, Loretta Lynn, the Bellamy Brothers and Emmylou Harris - and opened for such greats as Waylon Jennings and Roy Orbison. Rostad returns to the area with his Christmas in the Valley show this winter. He'll be in Pembroke on Nov. 30 and Ottawa on Dec. 3. Catch Wayne Rostad's show Thursday night at the Renfrew Fair at 8 p.m.

DRAGONFLY CELEBRATES SPECIAL WEDDING BILL RAINBOTH My reports from Dragonfly Golf Links normally begin with any highlights that may have taken place as early as last Friday, Aug. 17. This past Friday began with a drip, then a drop, and although the weather improved in the afternoon - the damage to our tee-sheet was already done. One of the victims of the weather was our Friday Ladies Stroke Play League. The next day however, the sunshine would not be denied. The beneficiaries were newlyweds Kim Merchand and Eric Stroud. The bride on this day has had a unique relationship with Dragonfly as she has been cutting grass for us for the past seven years. During her hundreds of hours on a mower she has had the chance to scout out a perfect location for her nuptials - the 10th tee. Dragonfly has hosted weddings before but never has anyone used this location for their ceremony. It worked perfectly. All of us here at Dragonfly would like to wish Kim and Eric Stroud the very best, and we are thrilled to have shared in their special day!

The Monday Men's League witnessed the Weapons of Grass Destruction, who flexed their golfing might to take first place. The Monday Mashers were the nights' runner up team. Closest to the pin was Steve Schultz on #5 and Garry Riopelle on #7. Ugly weather returned on Tuesday which deterred enough teams to stay home and dry. Not enough players endured the rain to make this night official league play. Earlier in the day however, the Ottawa Sun Scramble took place. One-hundred-and-sixteen golfers from the Absolute Comedy C Division tested their skills, (and their umbrellas) with hopes of moving on the final at the Marshes on Saturday, Aug. 25. The team of Joe Winton and Craig Alexander fired an amazing score of seven under par, and will be the leaders going into the final. Back to our Wednesday Night Men's League where the Abandoned Cubs were the A flight winners for the second week in a row. B flight winners were from the team of Scapa Tape. James Briscoe was closest to the pin on #5 and Rob Leighton was closest on #7.

Bill Rainboth/Submitted Kim Merchand, who has been cutting grass at Dragonfly for the past seven years, married Eric Stroud on the tenth tee Aug. 18. Next up is Thursday Ladies League and the completion of their second round of their 18 hole cycle. Team Seriously (?) were the A flight winners, The Top Tees were the B flight win-

ners and the River Lynx were the best of C flight. Closest to the pin were sharpshooters Annie Cassidy on #5, Julie Mahusky on #7, Joanne Simard on #13, and Pauline Martin on #18.

pairing for match play Vi Rossy and Mary Ann Abrams. Good luck to both of you. Mary Ann will be trying to defend her title. Again I have some reminders: Sept. 9 is the Solheim Cup - this is a two-team event where you have breakfast first then you play a best ball for six holes, two ball for six holes and scramble for the last six holes. The cost is $10 and the sign-up sheet is in

the ladies locker-room. There is always room for one more so don't be afraid to sign the sheet. The Sunshine Coach is having a Nine & Dine in memory of Lee Sharpe at the Renfrew Golf Club on Friday, Sept. 14. This is a fundraiser for the Sunshine Coach. Registration is at 4:30 p.m. with a shotgun start at 5. If interested sign the sheet downstairs outside the office or contact the Sunshine Coach,

Until next week - happy golfing! Bill Rainboth is the general manager at Dragonfly Golf Links.

O'Brien Cup Weekend Results The team of Mary-Jo Wertwyn, Michelle Lauzon, Anne MacNeil, Mary Ann Abrams, Julie Bonsor, Faye Warren, Mary Peer, Cathy McNally, Barb Desilets, Anne Windle, Kim Vandewouw, and Vi Rossy competed in the 85th O'Brien Cup in Mississippi on Saturday, Aug. 25. The team played against four other Valley teams - Mississippi, Arnprior, Pembroke and Deep River - in which Renfrew placed fourth with a total score of 940. Low Gross for Renfrew

was Mary Jo Wertwyn with a 85 and Barb Desilets was low net with a score of 68. Next year the O'Brien will be hosted by Renfrew. The Renfrew team of Mary-Jo Wertwyn, Anne MacNeil, Mary Ann Abrams, Mary Peer, Cathy McNally, Barb Desilets, Kim Vandewouw, and Vi Rossy - will again travel to Mississippi on Monday to play in the Senior Intersectionals against Arnprior, Mississippi and Tecumseh. The winning team from this group will move up and the loser moves down with the second place team hosting next year.

Before I continue with this article I must correct myself. Last week I said the club champions would participate in the provincial championship, this should have been the Tournament of Champions, with all the other OVGA champions in the same division. B Flight: Leanne Reid 39.0 pts.; Colleen Sheehan 38.0 pts.; Anne Windle 37.5 pts. C Flight: Sheila Kemp 37 pts.; Faith Mau 36.0 pts.; Bev Mau 35.5 pts. Hidden hole winner in A Flight is Julie Bonsor, longest putt on #15 was Anne MacNeil. We now have the final

though this year logging trucks are making regular trips along it). On my first excursion, I arrived just before dawn at a favourite beaver pond to see a beaver inspecting its dam. After it left, I howled for wolves and to my delight an entire pack responded! In August wolves leave their pups in beaver meadows and other open areas known as rendezvous sites, bringing food to them after making a kill. After a few more ponds I reached Sligo, a historic site on the Bonnechere River. I counted 47 cedar waxwings flying from the trees and sallying over the river and hovering about 20 metres above the water as they captured insects. Whether those were midges or small caddisflies, I couldn't tell. Groups of waxwings landed in chokecherry trees, their broken branches revealing that a black bear had previously visited them. The birds were also there for the cherries. Waxwings eat a lot of fruit and expedite the process by having a huge mouth opening (the gape) for swallowing berries whole and short intestines for efficiently

dealing with the fruit internally. It takes a waxwing a mere 20 minutes after swallowing a cherry to poop out its pit. The birds seemed nervous, devouring cherries for a few minutes before flying away to taller trees, but they repeatedly returned to eat cherries. I patiently stood for nearly two hours near the chokecherries to photograph the birds whenever they returned. Once I heard splashing as if an animal was wading across the Bonnechere River, which was hidden from view by dense alders. I quietly snuck down and peered through the shrubs only to see a female common merganser and her ten young scampering across the water. Later, I heard an animal moving along the far side of the river. A splash made me suspect a beaver, for there were signs of recent activity all around me. But the splashing continued, telling me it was not a beaver. Seconds passed and I heard an animal emerge on my side of the river, and soon the tall grasses and golden-

Suddenly a wolf's head appeared about six metres from me! Obviously startled, it bolted and ran back into the alders, the splashes that ensued telling me it returned to the far side of the river. It is remarkable what one sees when remaining still in one location. The key is to not make any noise or sudden movements. Perhaps that is becoming a lost art for pa-

dollars which have been matched by her employer, Bank of Nova Scotia," says a press release. "Dan played a key role in Renfrew's Terry Fox Run as he helped to organize the inaugural run in Renfrew before the Terry Fox Foundation was even fformed; the funds raised in Renfrew that first year were donated to the Canadian Cancer Society - the Terry Fox Foundation was

OPINION

RIDING WITH GRAMPA WAS ALWAYS A BUMPY RIDE EARL LEARNED A RUMBLE SEAT LESSON ON NORTHCOTE ROAD, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column

It wasn't the first time we lost my brother Earl out of the rumble seat of Grampa's car. The first time, it was Emerson's fault. Wrestling in the rumble seat for the best position, much bigger than Earl, Emerson gave him a mighty push, and like a loon diving into a lake, Earl went sailing into the ditch on the Northcote Side Road. But this time, it was Earl's fault,

plain and simple. Every time Grampa came from Ottawa, we five kids had to have a ride in his rumble seat car. My sister Audrey and I were content to sit in the front with Grampa, listening to his tales of Ottawa where he lawn-bowled, played golf and ate at Bowles Lunch. The day that Earl took the second dive was entirely his fault. The three brothers had climbed into the back, and Earl decided he would sit on the outside of the seat, with his back against the window that separated the rumble seat from the front of the car. Audrey kept rapping on the window, making mad gestures at Earl, trying to get him to sit down in the hole, but of course, he couldn't see her with his back to the glass. The Northcote Road was full of holes and ruts, which should have slowed down Grampa, but he

seemed to get special delight in hitting every one of them, as we bounced along at a good clip. We tore past Briscoe's General Store like a bolt of lightning, my teeth chattering from the rough ride with my eyes glued to the road. It was Audrey who saw the whole performance in the rumble seat, and she almost caused Grampa to leave the road when she grabbed his arm and told him to stop the car, we had lost Earl. Grampa never eased the gas a fraction, and simply said, "We'll pick him up on the way back." I started to cry, wondering if Earl was laying dead in the ditch, or at the very least had broken his legs ... both of them. But Grampa didn't seem to be the least concerned. I turned in the seat, and there were Emerson and Everett, as calm as you please, as if we lost a

ZEBRAS ENLIVEN SIZZLE SHACK EXPERIENCE JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com How many chips wagons can boast that they offer wraps and photographs with zebras along with the poutine? Kim's Sizzle Shack can. Kim MacNeil cooks up traditional chip wagon fare of hamburgers, hotdogs, sausages, fries and poutine at her

roadside eatery in front of the ark at the Logos Land resort near Cobden. However, the Portage-du-Fort resident has recognized the trend to "more healthy eating options" by adding her celebrated chicken caesar wraps to the menu. MacNeil, who trained as a baker, has also added chicken fingers and ice cream to her list of offerings. Kim's Sizzle Shack is a welcome addi-

sibling every day while driving in Grampa's rumble seat car. Their hair was flaying all over their faces, and they were grinning like they had just been given a dollar. They didn't seem to have a care in the world. Just before we came to that part of the Northcote Side Road, before the last long stretch into Renfrew, where we left the gravel, and the road turned into cement, Grampa, looking neither left nor right to see if any other cars were coming, pulled a U-turn and headed back home. Halfway to Briscoe's General Store, there was Earl standing on the side of the road waving frantically with one of his running shoes in his hand. Grampa ground to a halt, Earl climbed into the back and slid right down into the very depths of the hole. It looked like he wasn't going to take any more chances of diving into the ditch. Mother didn't even ask Earl

tion at Logos Land since the ark restaurant closed. For the past two years MacNeil has catered to Logos Land vacationers and other Highway 17 travellers, especially those heading to their cottages and other Upper Ottawa Valley holiday spots. A special attraction is the ark's animals. MacNeil notes that while families are waiting for their food they "love to get their pictures taken with the zebras." Kim's Sizzle Shack is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week May through September.

how he got a scraped knee. She was more interested in the green grass stain on his good Sunday shirt. She did get out the iodine and dabbed the cut and ordered him to go upstairs and change his clothes. Earl limped around a bit, but didn't seem to have any injuries other than the skinned knee. He did say though, the iodine hurt a lot more than the scrape he got when he nosedived into the ditch out of Grampa's rumble seat car along the Northcote Side Road. POP-UP RETAIL BOUTIQUE WILL SHOWCASE YOGA WEAR, ACCESSORIES OTTAWA VALLEY YOGA Ottawa Valley Yoga, a new pop-up retail boutique in Cobden, will hold a grand opening celebration on

Tuesday, Sept. 4. The outlet, designed to "showcase yoga-related active wear and accessories for all of your yoga and lifestyle needs," is located at the In-

ner Strength Fitness Studio at 32 Main St. across from The Scoop. The grand opening will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. with free music, food, drinks, parking and professional photography. "It is our goal to turn the space into a home away from home, where people feel wel-

come to come as they are and be who they are," said Megan Chase, founder and operator of Ottawa Valley Yoga. The company's commitment is to make yoga and accessories accessible to all, she said. "Ottawa Valley Yoga is

body and spirit," said Chase. "It is my belief yoga is a lifestyle, not just an exercise." She said noticing a lack of places to practice in rural communities "sparked my interest in being able to open a welcoming space, which provides yogis of all levels with a comfortable place to practice." GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, words flow effortlessly from your lips this week, and others are captivated by your tales. You can use this power and creative streak to your advantage.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

GRAPHIC ANTI-ABORTION IMAGES DISPLAYED IN RENFREW JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com A group of about 15 pro-life activists caused a stir in Renfrew and Arnprior Aug. 20 with their graphic, large anti-abortion signs. 'Show the Truth' campaign leader Rosemary Connell, who has been engaging in antiabortion protests around Ontario for more than 25 years, said the group was on the second of its five-day 'missions' to spread the prolife message. After five days in the Toronto area last month, the protesters from various areas of the province spent Monday morning in Renfrew and the afternoon in Arnprior, before moving on to Ottawa for three days. They were scheduled to finish their stint in Barry's Bay and Bancroft Aug. 24. "It's strictly for information," Connell maintained, adding that the posters of a bloody fetus do not exaggerate what abortion looks like. In today's society it often takes a shocking image to attract people's attention, she said. "We're just trying to show people the truth," said Gordon Truscott, who is a Christian Heritage Party candidate from Guelph. The protesters target high traffic areas, so with Renfrew's main street blocked by construction, the group set up on Plaunt Street and Veterans Memorial Boulevard. In Arnprior, they were along the top end of Daniel Street. They didn't seem to attract much response in Renfrew, but caused a mini-storm on social media with their Arnprior appearance. Connell, a Lindsay area resident, started Show the Truth about 20 years ago. The group is fond of quoting American pro-life advocate Gregg Cunningham: "Injustice that is invisible inevitably becomes tolerable. But injustice that is made visible becomes intolerable."
