COMMUNITY RALLIES IN SUPPORT OF BEREAVED COBDEN FAMILY JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Family and friends in the Cobden and Eganville areas are rallying around the young family of the motorcyclist killed on Highway 17 on Aug. 23. A GoFundMe account has been set up in support of the family of Adam “Murray”MacGregor, 38, who was killed when his motorcycle was hit by a transport truck at the corner of Forester’s Falls Road. Proceeds from a poker run and golf tournament will also go to help the family. MacGregor is survived by his wife, Stefanie; two young daughters, Lennon and Ruby;

and a baby boy on the way. The GoFundMe account, set up Tuesday, Aug. 28, is gratefully accepting donations “in support of the family and their future needs.” As of Tuesday, Sept. 4, the $10,000 goal had been surpassed with $18,460 contributed by 191 donors. The money will be used at the discretion of Stefanie MacGregor. The link for the fund is www.gofundme.com/in-memory-of-adammurraymacgregor. There was a public tribute to MacGregor including a minute of silence at the opening of the Cobden Fair, and he has been recognized for his contributions by the Whitewa-

ter Region Fire Department (he volunteered at the Haley Station) and the Simple Men Motorcycle Club, of which he was a member. The motorcycle club decided to go ahead with a planned Poker Run Saturday, Sept. 1 and turn it into a benefit for the family of “our fallen brother.” Meanwhile, an Adam MacGregor Fundraising Golf Tournament will be held Friday, Sept. 21, from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. at the Whitetail Golf Course. A graveside service for MacGregor was held at the Cobden Union Cemetery Friday, Aug. 31, at 2 p.m. followed by a Celebration of Life at Dunbar’s Barn at 1822 Queens Line. The arrangements were handled by the Fraser-Morris and Heubner Funeral Home in Cobden. As well as his wife and children, MacGregor is survived by his parents, Jim and Marvine MacGregor, brother Matthew (Tania) MacGregor, grandparents Mervin and Gail Cole, father-in-law Wayne (Susan) Beaudrie,

When Stephanie FraserTorok recently visited the Zion Road property with her fiancé, she was disturbed to see so many dogs running about; the ground littered with what appeared to be pig skulls; bones, feces, and rusty tools all around. She used her cellphone to record video and posted it to social media, along with notifying the OPP and SPCA. "I wanted to grab all of them and put them in the car with me," Fraser-Torok said. "I can't sleep at night." However, none seemed emaciated or in pain. They barked and trotted down the lengthy driveway. "I don't think they are used to being around people, but none of them attacked or looked angry," Fraser-Torok said.

Charles Hickman lives across the road and has called the SPCA several times. "We've been complaining for years," he said. "I kinda gave up when they gave me the run around. One branch would tell me to call another." Hickman said the incessant barking goes late into the night, and that the dogs are always on the narrow country road. Dogs were dropped off there over the years. They always run a couple of hundred yards alongside their master's vehicle when it leaves the premises. To his knowledge, the food is purchased as scraps from a nearby butchery. Over the last few days he has seen OPP come and go a couple of times. Hickman, who started to build a kennel with the man, doesn't believe deliberate intent to harm is at play. The former school teacher has told him he suffers from PTSD. "He doesn't want to do any harm to them," Hickman said. "A lot of people just don't realize that they are (be-

MUNICIPAL ELECTION

JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com After coming within 139 votes of being elected to Renfrew council in 2014, Jeff Taylor is seeking a seat in Horton this time. The Cotieville resident, who grew up in Renfrew and attended Renfrew Collegiate Institute, said he had been planning to run again in town until his experience volunteering on the front lines of last spring's flooding along the Ottawa River. "I saw first-hand the community spirit in Horton," he said, noting the township, volunteers and business worked "really well" together to help the flood victims. "It made me want to learn more about Horton ... to help more," he said. Taylor said the fact only one incumbent councillor is running for re-election was another motivating factor for him to run in Horton, as is the fact he has sold the

two businesses he ran in Renfrew. He said he felt Renfrew council needed major changes in the last election, but not as much this year. While he admits having his differences with Horton council eight years ago, he doesn't have any particular beefs with the current members. He said he could work well with whoever is elected mayor. He said council needs a good mix of members and his background in construction (he started when he was 15) and running his own roofing business since 1990 will prove valuable in making council decisions (he also runs a snowplowing business). "You need hands-on people on council," he said. "I don't shy away from tough work. I don't shy away from tough topics. Challenges drive me." Taylor said he is also better versed on how councils

Serving on the committees taught him to approach decisions professionally and not let personal opinions or grudges get in the way, he said. He promised he won't be the type of candidate who "you see a lot of in the campaign and once elected they don't talk to you again." Tay-

lor maintained he will be involved to the extent of driving around and randomly talking to residents he meets. "I can put myself in other people's shoes fairly easily." Taylor said Horton doesn't need a dramatic overhaul, but it does need to be ready to deal with the development pressure that will come from the four-laning of Highway 17. He said he supports focusing Horton's residential growth in small communities such as Cotieville, Castleford, Thompson Hill, Pleasant View and The Glen. "It's easier to keep safe," he said. "Everyone looks out for everyone." As a father of three children, council needs to "keep Horton a good place to raise a family." Council should also take steps to retain and attract small businesses to the township, he added. Taylor is facing Glen Campbell, Peter Tippins, Ian Moodie, Tom Webster, Lane Cleroux and Doug Humphries for four councillor seats in the Oct. 22 election.

RENFREW'S GROVE PARK PLANS L-SHAPED ADDITION JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com An addition is being planned for Grove Park Lodge in Renfrew. However, the 21,295-square foot expansion will not increase the number of beds (96) in the long-term-care home, but instead enlarge the bedroom sizes to meet new standards. At its Aug. 28 meeting, Renfrew council approved an agreement with Gem Health Care Group for a site plan for the rede-

velopment. There is a proviso that states the developer's drainage, lighting and garbage/recycling storage plans be addressed before construction begins. Town planner Ivan Burton explained that the plan is to build a detached L-shaped addition on the northwest corner of the property to increase the size of the building from just under 4,000 square metres (42,122 square feet) to 5,901 square metres (63,517 square feet). ty," he noted. Coun. Kate Windle asked if a number of two-bedroom units were being turned into one-bedrooms. Burton reiterated that the facility was "being remodelled, but there would be no change in the number of beds." The addition means the facility will have two enclosed courtyards. The expansion will necessitate the demolition of two storage buildings, but the three gazebos will be retained. The parking ar-

ea will be enlarged and a newly designed underground stormwater management system will replace the current drainage pipes. That should address deficiencies that arose after a previous expansion in 2006, Burton reported. He said the town is working closely with the applicant to resolve several minor concerns. A substantial review has been undertaken to ensure the drainage system will work for the site. Director of development and

works, Mike Asselin, assured council that there should be no impact on other Albert Street properties as no drainage water would be diverted off the site. ATV PATROL TO TARGET RENFREW FAIR FENCE-JUMPERS JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Security guards on all-terrain-vehicles will endeavour to thwart an age-old Renfrew Fair tradition: sneaking in through the back fence. Renfrew council approved a request by Renfrew Fair security co-ordinator Jim McBain to run an ATV along the Millennium Trail behind the fairgrounds in the evenings during the fair. Normally, ATVs are banned from the Millennium Trail. At council's Aug. 28 meeting, Coun. Tom Sidney, one of the architects of the town's ATV bylaw, emphasized this is a special circumstance and other ATVs are not being allowed on the trail. "We don't want people to mis-

said. "This is just for security. Not anyone can jump on an ATV and drive it on the trail during the fair (or afterwards)." McBain asked that his security company, Saint James & Associates, be allowed to operate one ATV along the trail from 6-10 p.m. daily Wednesday, Sept. 5 to Saturday, Sept. 8. The patrol would be assisted by a second unit patrolling the fence line inside the fairgrounds, he explained. "The noted patrol area is a well-known access point for persons wanting to gain illegal access to the fairgrounds during the fair, as well as engaging in other illegal and socially unacceptable activities," McBain said.

"It shows we're pretty well in the same spot as we were four years ago (when the current council took over) with the tax levy," said Deputy Mayor Brian Armsden. "Yet we've done a lot of work." He said the report "lets ratepayers know that their money has been spent well without taxes getting out of line." Lochtie explained that OPP cost increases played a "significant role" in the township's tax requirements in the last five years. The new billing model for OPP policing has boosted the township's OPP costs from $397,568 in 2014 to an expected $948,893 this year, upping the tax levy alone by 13.5 per cent. Provincial governmentmandated long-term asset management planning and associated infrastructure investments, particularly

JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com The 9.8 per cent property tax levy increase McNab/Braeside council approved in December hasn't made an appreciable different in the township's standing compared to other Renfrew County municipalities. With all tax rates now set in the county, council received a report from its treasurer Angela Lochtie at its Aug. 7 meeting that showed the township has the seventh lowest (11th highest) rate in the county. McNab/Braeside moved up one spot, ahead of Horton, from the sixth lowest in 2017. In each of the three years before that McNab/ Braeside was fifth lowest. Deep River, Renfrew and Arnprior again have the top three residential tax rates of the 17 Renfrew County municipalities. McNab/Braeside sits in 11th below Whitewater Region but just ahead of Hor-

in roads and buildings, also played a role in the increase, she reported. The township's 9.8 per cent tax levy increase (7.5 per cent tax rate rise) for 2018 boosted the average municipal residential property tax bill by about $118 or $9.87 a month. It is based on an average assessment of $255,461 for a non-waterfront home in McNab/Braeside. When the Renfrew County and education rates are factored in, the overall residential tax rate grew 3.1 per cent. The county increase of 0.9 per cent adds another $20.91 to the tax bills, but the 5 per cent education drop saves $16.67, for a final average pre average household impact of $122.65. The biggest chunk of the township increase is being eaten up by road and building upgrades. A longterm plan that requires an annual levy increase of 11.5 per cent, offset by any growth in the township,

has allowed the repair some of McNab-Braeside's worst roads including Scheel Drive, Kippen and this year McLaghlan. Council and staff have also developed a long-term plan over the past three years to address a number of the township's $7.6 million worth of structures that require either significant repair or outright replacement. Provincial accessibility requirements have added to the costs. Key building priorities addressed have included replacement of the Braeside salt/sand shed in 2016 and renovation of the White Lake Park building in 2017, as well as three projects this year ¬ renovation of the Perneel building into a central recreation facility and replacement of the Braeside RA centre and township office. Funding for the building work and future needs is being phased in over several years with annual levy increases limited to

John Carter/Metroland The turning of the Perneel building into a recreation centre and the building of a new township hall next to it are among the items that boosted McNab-Braeside's tax rate this year. 2.5-3 per cent. The $118 increase also includes $22 for the OPP and almost $8 as phasing in of the recreation and library agreements with Arnprior continues. The budget also funded a new full-time recreation programmer and the conversion of a winter seasonal roads worker position to a full-time job to bolster such summer road maintenance as mowing, ditching, brushing, pothole patching, grading, dust

control and culvert maintenance. It also factors in cost-ofliving adjustments for staff and the rising cost of winter salt and sand. With work continuing on roads and buildings and an estimated two-per cent inflation rate, Lochtie estimates the township will require a 6.7 per cent levy increase in 2019. More detailed information on the 2018 budget is available on the township's website.

DON'T LET SEX-ED HIJACK SCHOOL DEBATE School's back, with at least some relief from the uncertainty whirling about the health and physical education curriculum. But by turning back the clock, the new provincial government is in danger of throwing out the baby with the bathwater. In a news release in late August, the government spelled out its plans for a provincewide consultation with parents in advance of implementing a new back-to-the-basics curriculum. There are both positives and negatives in the announcement co-made by Premier Doug Ford and Education Minister Lisa Thompson. It's positive the government made its intentions known before the new school year began. And some of the aspects of the curriculum review are well deserving of scrutiny and debate. It's never a bad idea to consult parents (and the rest of the citizenry), but it has to be an inclusive process that guards against being hijacked by a vocal minority. It's positive that town halls are being held right across the province (the rural voice needs to be heard too), but exactly what 'telephone town halls' are and how effective they will be remains to be seen. Regarding the list of topics on the government's consult list, there isn't much argument over whether the curriculum should be reviewed to determine if Ontario's schools are doing enough to prepare students with needed job skills. Not every student is suited to go to university. More emphasis and stature should be put on learning skilled trades and new technologies. Most people surely agree that the curriculum could do more to educate students in important life skills such as financial literacy. And the question whether to ban cellphone use in the classroom is certainly worth debating. Discussing how to improve student performance in the sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics makes sense, especially considering the latest results of the standardized testing released last week. While there are some flaws in that process, it's obvious many Grade 6 students in the province aren't up to snuff when it comes to math skills. So it figures the curriculum should be re-evaluated. It's also reasonable for the review to include an examination of standardized testing to ensure the results aren't painting a false picture of student performance. In anticipation of changes, the government is making changes to the math curriculum, but the focus on "traditional formulas and memorization techniques" appears vague enough not to complicate things for teachers. Unfortunately that's not the case with the health and physical education curriculum. In a knee-jerk reaction to a few strident sex-ed objectors, teachers are being forced to revert to an out-of-date curriculum from the 1990s. The strides made in including such important topics as mental health, bullying, cyberstalking, sexting and the soon-to-be legalization of pot in the curriculum are being relegated to the back burner because of misguided concerns that discussing gender identity or making babies will scar our children. The school curriculum could do with a review. But people and the government shouldn't allow themselves to be sidetracked into focusing on the sex-ed issue. Despite attracting so much attention, it's only a small part of the equation. In fact it's not even the most important part of the health and physical education curriculum. Fill in the consultation surveys, attend the town halls and make detailed presentations if so inclined, but don't let apathy give the government an excuse to set a system-wide curriculum only a small group embraces.

BEWARE BACK TO SCHOOL TRAFFIC To the editor: The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) remind motorists that school buses have returned to our local roads. Motorists should be aware of the expected increase in pedestrians, cyclists and school buses, and give themselves extra commuting time. Students will no doubt be excited and may forget many of the safety rules required for safe travels. In accordance with the Highway Traffic Act motorists encountering a stopped school bus that

has its overhead red signal-lights flashing shall stop before reaching the bus and shall not proceed until the bus moves or the overhead red signal-lights have stopped flashing. The minimum fine for failing to stop for a school bus is $400 and 6 demerit points. This applies whether you are meeting or following a school bus, and includes multi-lane roads. The only exception is when driving on a road with a median - traffic coming from the opposite direction is not required to stop. Drivers should also be prepared to yield to student pedestrians and cyclists. Parents of students who will be walking or cycling to school are encouraged to speak with their children about the rules of the road that apply to them.

Michael Runtz/Submitted These two Eastern Wolf pups, encountered the day after the 25th Annual Bonnechere Wolf Howl, were not part of the pack that responded on that historic night.

following excursion. Two days earlier I had located a pack on the Basin Depot Road, so we stopped at this location. Unfortunately, the pack appeared to be gone, and after an unsuccessful round of howling, we moved on. The second location yielded similar results, and with rain threatening, my hopes for success sank. Then, on my third attempt at a new location, an entire pack answered my howls! Almost all attendees heard the response, which went on for nearly half a minute. After I howled a second time, the pack responded even louder than the first time. While the world-famous Highway 60 Public Wolf Howls have been unsuccessful for many years, my intimate Wolf Howls at Bonnechere and Achray are running at about an 80 per cent success rate. If you have never heard the howls of wild wolves, why not join us next year? Even if we don’t hear wolves, I can guarantee it will be a howl of a good time! One of the wildest sounds in nature is the howl of a wolf. Wolves howl to communicate with members of their own pack (which averages about seven individuals) and to advertise the limits of their territory. Over the millennia, their howls have invoked fear in the hearts of many, but today they have come to represent all that is wild. Their music stokes our imagination and stirs our soul. Recently I had the honour of conducting two public outings to hear eastern wolves. One Howl took place near Achray, for Algonquin Park, and the other, for Bonnechere Provincial Park, along the Basin Depot Road. For each Wolf Howl, I gave a PowerPoint presentation on wolf biology before leading the attendees into the wilds to hopefully hear wolves respond to my impersonations of their howls. Achray’s Wolf Howl was held on Friday, Aug. 24, and its 83 participants packed the Achray Theatre. The previous day I lo-

cated a pack not far from the theatre. Although the pack moved that night, the next morning I was fortunate to relocate it about six kilometres from where it was first encountered. After my presentation, I led the procession to where I had heard wolves earlier that day. After I howled several times, to my relief, the entire pack answered back. But they had moved about a kilometre to the east, so after enjoying their howls we drove closer to them. After a single howl, the pack answered back from about a half-kilometre away. To our surprise, a single wolf howled from about fifteen metres away! Under my headlamp’s illumination, we could see its eyes glowing white. It howled and it barked, an indication it was unhappy to encounter an intruding wolf. For about two minutes, we exchanged howls, then I stopped when I felt that we had intruded into its space long enough. The next night I conducted the Bonnechere Wolf Howl. This was a special event for it was our 25th annual Wolf Howl. In honour of this special occasion, the Friends of Bonnechere put on a wonderful barbecue complete with a special 25th-anniversary cake. The weather was unsettled, and it showered during the fine meal. Despite the discouraging weather, about 250 people attended my talk and the

RENFREW COUNTY CONTINUES EFFORTS TO STOP LOSING PARAMEDICS TO OTTAWA JOHN CARTER john.car ter@ metroland.com With a new provincial government in place at Queen's Park, the County of Renfrew is making another stab at keeping its paramedics from rushing off to calls in Ottawa. After an intense discussion, Renfrew County council passed a motion at its Aug. 29 meeting to authorize director of emergency services, Mike Nolan, "to apply the option of removing the County of Renfrew vehicles from further response within the City of Ot-

tawa." The resolution is another attempt to force the province and City of Ottawa to the negotiation table to work out a fairer deployment of Renfrew County paramedics. The motion, presented by the council's health committee, goes on to direct staff to review cost pressures associated with overtime related for Ottawa calls and Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) payments. For the past several years, Renfrew County has been attempting to stem the flow of its ambulances to

cover medical emergencies in Ottawa because of a shortage of ambulances there. However, efforts by Renfrew County, as well as the United Counties of Prescott & Russell, have been for the most part ignored by the City of Ottawa and the provincial government. While the main concern has been that the diversion of Arnprior and Renfrew ambulances to Ottawa leaves local residents vulnerable, there is also a financial cost to Renfrew County. "It's unfair that our residents are essentially subsi-

tigue that often relates to increased sick leave." The county is alerting the province and seeking assistance for financial relief, as well submitting a revised paramedic deployment plan. The health committee also suggested county council support the adoption of a Prescott Russell motion related to inter-municipal call response. However, that motion has apparently been rejected by the provincial Ministry of Health, which has asked Prescott Russell to revisit the issue and negotiate a solution with Ottawa.

PAUL MOREAU IS NEW RENFREW COUNTY CAO Renfrew County's new chief administrative officer/clerk is no stranger at county headquarters. County council announced Aug. 29 that its director of social services Paul Moreau will replace CAO Jim Hutton when he retires effective Sept. 29. Council passed a resolution confirming the hiring recommendation made by its recruitment committee. Moreau has more than 10 years of municipal experience, including five years as the county's director of development and property from 2011 and 2016 and the last two years as the director of social services. Prior to coming to the county, Moreau served as the district manager with the Ministry of Natural Resources. "Paul Moreau brings a breadth of experience and leadership qualities to this position," said warden

"We continue to face challenges with end-of-shift overtime as a result of staff being caught up in out-ofarea calls, unable to return to base," says the health committee report. "These hours have increased by 40 per cent in the last seven years for a total of $246,766." "This also has an impact on paramedic stress, and fa-

Hutton agreed, noting, "Paul brings a strong level of professionalism, dedication and leadership to this position, and I feel confident that he will continue to lead the staff of the County of Renfrew into the future in a manner that delivers the levels of service that residents of the county expect. I wish him well in his new role." He noted that the two will be "joined at the hip" this month as Moreau familiarizes himself with the CAO/clerk duties before his predecessor leaves. A recruitment committee chaired by Murphy, and comprised of chair and vice-chair of the finance and administration committee Walter Stack and Glenn Doncaster and the three most recent past wardens (Peter Emon, Bob Sweet, Janice Visneskie Moore), was established to find a

Emon noted that the new Conservative government is well briefed on the issue, "but hasn't moved yet." While Renfrew County is now represented by a sitting minister, the new government also has several members of influence in Ottawa. They'd likely be reluctant to take on Ottawa council over the issue, Emon said. However, Renfrew County is persisting, sending its motion to all its municipal partners and continuing to urge the province and Ottawa to work "responsibly" to solve the problem.

new CAO. A total of 55 individuals applied for the position, and the committee then interviewed the final five applicants before selecting Moreau. Emon noted that four of the six shortlisted for the job were internal applicants. "It was a difficult choice ... but It's nice to have that level of confidence that four of our own could have performed the role," he said. "It means Paul has a really strong management team working with him with the other three still on board." "I am very pleased with the decision of county council," said Moreau. "As the chief administrative officer and clerk, I look forward to a productive relationship with council, the senior leadership team, county staff and the local municipalities in continuing to deliver services to our community that make Renfrew County a great place to live, work and play."

After a year's sabbatical, Rev. Rose Leclaire has resurrected the Bible Proclamation at O'Brien Park in Renfrew as her way of combatting "the rise of evil" in society. She conducted the 15th public reading of the Bible from the bandstand by the swinging bridge on Aug. 16. Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant, who has attended most of the proclamations, led off the reading of the Bible. Leclaire said taking the Bible out of society has resulted in a lack of moral standards, not just in Canada but worldwide. People aren't getting guidance from governments and schools

they once did, she said. Bringing back the Bible reading is her "small way of letting people know there is a better way ... and the answer is through God and Jesus," she said. Leclaire said she is speaking out again because there is a need to "repent" and "know what we're fighting; what attacks are coming against us." "Satan has been trying to take over ... we're seeing a lot of corruption, a lot of evil, but God is pushing back," she said, adding that she is confident God will eventually overturn legislation that has allowed lawlessness. "We pray for our governments and the return of the reign of God," she added. Noting that MPP John Yakabuski wasn't available

RENFREW BUSINESS PROPERTY TO BE CONVERTED JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Renfrew council has approved a rezoning to allow a commercial building at 73 Plaunt St. to be converted into a three-unit residence. The irregularly-shaped property, which includes a former home and detached garage, currently houses a couple of businesses includ-

ing the Ottawa Valley Artisans Gallery. It runs along the former CP Rail line. Town planner Ivan Burton told council that there were no public concerns expressed at a meeting regarding the change and the planning advisory committee supports the application by Rod Cartman. Burton said the conversion would contribute to the avail-

for continuing the Bible reading "tradition." The one-day Bible reading included people reading both at the park and from home. It was followed by a worship service in the evening.

for downtown stores, he added. "It's win-win for everyone," said Coun. Kate Windle.

JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com After growing comfortable in their new premises, the staff at Renfrew Animal Hospital decided it was finally time to show off their more modern, roomier clinic to the general public. The company, which is owned by five veterinarians, held a grand opening celebration Aug. 25. Renfrew Animal Hospital had moved from Argyle Street to its new location at 825 O'Brien Rd. In April 217. The veterinarians partnered in holding the event with Valley Animal Rescue, which raised funds for its rescues with a barbecue, bouncy castle, raffle and cotton candy at the open house. In giving tours of the facility, Dr. Emily Jansen showed off the four exam rooms (two for cats, two for dogs), the full service in-house laboratory, treatment area, ultrasound and X-ray room,

JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com

dental site, and emergency and isolation areas. "It's more room (than the previous location) and a much more modern facility," she said. Jansen said the hospital has better bio-security and more up-to-date equipment and processes to meet modern standards. The new office's location is also more accessible to patients and easier to find, she added. Eight veterinarians work out of the facility, dealing with both small and large (farm) animals from all over the Valley. They also do house calls. Renfrew Animal Hospital is open 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. After hours, vets will provide advice over the phone and, if need be, refer patients to an emergency clinic in west Ottawa. During the open house, Dr. Al Witham, who opened Renfrew Animal Hospital in 1981 before retiring in 2013, dropped by for a visit.

Valley Animal Rescue (VAR) has funded three major surgeries for dogs this summer. It also continues efforts to deal with the feral cat problems in various areas in Renfrew and area. Helping rescue animals takes money, so support from Renfrew Animal Hospital and its neighbour Dentistry in the Valley was much appreciated on Aug. 25. VAR, which is gearing up for its major Wag'n Walk fundraiser Sept. 22, held a barbecue, complete with bouncy castle and cotton candy, in partnership with the Renfrew Animal Hospital's open house. The fundraiser was further buoyed by the donation for a raffle of two impressive gift baskets by Dentistry in the Valley, which recently opened its O'Brien Road premises next to the animal hospital. VAR volunteer Lori Nadon explained that the money raised at the fundraiser will go toward offsetting the organization's

substantial veterinarian costs. Included in the three major surgeries this summer was the removal of Willie the dog's ear canals, which cost several thousand dollars. Nadon said VAR has also spayed, neutered and treated at least 50 cats this summer. The group pulled 25 cats out of a feral colony in the Grist Mill Road area west of Douglas and is now focused on a colony of at least 40 cats on Gillan Road. VAR is also helping people in Calabogie deal with a feral cat problem. "There is no end to it," said Nadon. "So the need (for donations) may never stop." The group showcased four cats at the animal hospital's grand opening and announced a twoweek special on adoptions. Because it is helping so many cats, VAR needs more foster homes. In an effort to free up foster spaces, it has reduced its cat adoption fee from $150 to $50 until Sept. 8. Considering the average cost to prepare a cat for adoption (spay/neuter, vaccinate, worm/flea treatment and microchipping) is about $325, it's a

"pawsome deal," says VAR. The second annual Wag'n Walk has been moved this year from MaTe-Way to a more central location, the Renfrew Fairgrounds. Registration

for the walk (once around the track, dogs optional) is set for 10 a.m., with a barbecue and pet-related vendors to follow until 2 p.m. Pledge sheets are available at Pet Valu and Rick's Pet Stores in Renfrew, and people can donate online. More information is available on the Facebook page for Valley Animal Rescue.

NEW BOOK, AUTHOR PLAY KEY ROLE IN PRESERVING KASHUBIAN CULTURE JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com

David Shulist/Metroland Among those who dropped in at Renfrew's A Sense of Country to talk to David Shulist and buy his book were Irene Burchat, left, and Irene Rekowskie. It's "amazing" Kashubian culture and language has survived, he said, noting the area has been bounced from country to country as kingdoms, governments and wars came and went over the past three centuries. Shulist said although the Kashubians have their own language and culture, they were in danger of disappearing under assimilation efforts of the Polish Communist regime. However, in part thanks to Canadian Kashubian efforts, there has been a comeback. "It was almost lost," Shulist said. "It's only in the past 20 years has there been more interest in finding out about Kashubia." He also details the forming of new ties, "a bridge of friendship," between Polish and Canadian Kashubs. "They (European Kash-

ubs) can't believe we still speak the language here after 160 years." Shulist's comprehensive book covers all aspects of Renfrew County Kashubian culture, including language, music, dance, faith, literature, traditions and crafts. Shulist himself has been a key organizer of many special events designed to shine the light on his heritage. The book also honours the volunteers who help keep the culture alive at Wilno's Heritage Park and Museum, where his book is available. Anyone interested in learning more about the Kashubian language and culture in Canada or acquiring Shulist's book, which is going into its third printing, can contact him at johnnykashub@kashub.com.

For David Shulist, writing a book on his Kashubian heritage was a labour of love. It is also a centrepiece of his "fight for identity" and ongoing campaign to ensure the Kashubian culture is preserved both here in Canada and worldwide. Shulist is appreciative of the support he received in campaign and decision to write a book about it. "I had the vision, but the whole community rallied around to make it happen," he said. The Wilno resident spread his message during a recent appearance on Valley Heritage Radio followed by a book-signing at A Sense of Country in downtown Renfrew. His book, Discovering Kashubia Europe: The Fatherland of my Kashubian ancestors, tells the story of Shulist and other Renfrew County Kashubs finding out about their "true heritage." It is also full of details about the culture of Kashubia and how it differs from the rest of Poland. Shulist maintains the Kashubian heritage had been "hidden from us" since 1858 when Kashubs first came to Renfrew County. For instance, until recently many Kashubian immigrants thought they were speaking "low Polish," not their own language, he said. Shulist, who has written many articles on the subject, describes Kashubia, or "Kaszëbë," as a "small nation without statehood" in northern Poland between Germany and Lithuania along the south shore of the Baltic Sea. As he explains in his book, the Kashubs are a Slavic people. Their language, which is still spoken by fourth and fifth generation Kashubians in the Barry's Bay-Wilno area, is of the same family as spoken by the Czechs, Slovaks, Poles and Sorbians.

NEW TRAILS, SIGNAGE BLESSED AT CALABOGIE'S BARNET PARK JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com The Friends of Barnet Park held a lovefest for a community "gem" as they celebrated trails and other upgrading at the scenic park on Calabogie Lake Aug. 21. The festivities included a feather blessing by Algonquin elder Skip Ross, the unveiling of a Barnet trail sign and map, a walkabout to admire the improvements, and a picnic lunch at the cottage. Afterwards, Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry student youth rangers under the guidance of Jacey Zohr joined with Friends of Barnet Park members for the annual cleaning of the park. The work bee included brushing, gardening and raking up pine needles to reduce the fire danger. Those attending the celebration were impressed by the brushing out along the trail between the cottage and beach. "It's wide open so we can enjoy the view of the lake and island," said Barnet Park committee member Dave Luce. He noted that the park tends to be "jam-packed" on weekends. "It's really well used ... it's a gem in our community," he said. Guest speakers included local historian Irene Robillard, First Nations/Métis researcher and author Noreen Kruzich, and Ross,

MC Barry Legear thanked the many volunteers who had "stepped up to the plate" and "made this special day possible." They included his fellow Barnet Park committee members Harold Murphy, Marie Buscomb, Margaret Legear and Luce, as well as the "very helpful" Township of Greater Madawaska staff. Other groups who assisted in the effort included the Calabogie seniors, Lions, snowmobile, and fish and game clubs. It was also noted that garden experts Hank and Hennie Schaly were a "godsend for the park" and John Bonnar had contributed a "tremendous amount of work" over

the years. Renfrew TB bank branch manager Susanne Richter was a special guest at the celebration as the improvements "to protect and enhance the park environment" were made possible by funding from the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation. Robillard related the history of the Barnet family's lumbering success and how Thomas Barnet "had the foresight" to bequeath the cottage and property to the municipality in 1975 for public enjoyment. It is an "idyllic spot" to "pause and reflect" on nature and life, she said. Kruzich said preserving the site goes hand in hand with the First Nations philosophy of respecting eco-

systems and "taking only what you need." When the Algonquins took from nature, they made certain they balanced it by giving back, she said. Noting the site is on unceded Algonquin territory, Kruzich said Algonquins are not against development as long as it's done re-

sponsibly. Unfortunately Mother Nature is under attack, so is "fighting back," she said, noting "that is what we are seeing now (with more extreme weather events)." Ross, whose native name is Running River Man, told those assembled that there is much more to

nature than first meets the eye. "If you study it, you'll find much more." The two mounted trail signs unveiled included one by the cottage relating the bequeathing of the property by the Barnet family and another at the trail head is a map of the park and trails.

SCHOOL WOULD BE DIFFERENT WITHOUT AUDREY THERE YOUNG MARY THANKFUL FOR HER TEACHER, FRIENDS, COLUMNIST RECALLS MARY COOK Column

Filled with a mixture of anticipation and dread, I headed off to the Northcote School for the first day back after a long summer vacation. I loved going to school, but this year would be very different. My sister Audrey had graduated from the Entrance Class, and she wouldn't be there to look after me. Who would walk me to

school through the bush out our long lane to the Northcote Side Road? Who would make sure I had my lunch tucked into my book bag every morning, setting it on the table at the back of the school room at the ready when Miss Crosby nodded that morning classes were over? And so that first day, my stomach was in knots. But Joyce and Velma, my best friends, were there, and they didn't seem the least bit concerned. Of course, Velma had an older sister still there, and Joyce never had a sister to begin with. It looked like the last thing on Miss Crosby's mind was whether or not I was upset. She set right to getting us all seated. I noticed she was careful not to sit my brother Emerson beside Cecil, but settled them in different rows well apart. They spelled trouble if put together!

I had hoped to get seated beside either Velma or Joyce, but Miss Crosby gave them seats in the second row. I was left standing at the back of the room waiting to be called. Miss Crosby next sat the Senior Fourths, but leaving the front desk empty. Once everyone else was in place, Miss Crosby finally called my name and pointed to the only place left in the entire room, that empty desk. What was left of the morning passed quickly, and then it was time for lunch. Miss Crosby nodded at Velma's sister, and she went to the table at the back of the room, took my lunch bag and brought it to me. She made sure I had a place to sit beside Joyce and Velma. The knot in my stomach began to ease. Everything was working out just fine, as we laughed and

talked about going back to school and the first day. When it was time to go home, Velma's sister said I was to walk home with them. She said then all I would have to do was cut across the twenty-acre field that separated our two farms leading right to our house. She knew how I was frightened to walk through the deep bush that filled our long lane into our barnyard. That night after we had said our prayers around Mother's knee I went to the braided rug beside our bed. I knelt down and had a little talk with God, as I often did. Usually it was to ask a special favour. But tonight was different. Tonight it was to give thanks. I gave a prayer of thanks to having a teacher like Miss Crosby, and a friend like Velma who had an older sister who had reached out to me. I went to bed with a much ligh-

ter heart than I had in the morning, and when I got out of bed the next day, my fears were gone, and I couldn't wait to get back to the Northcote School. A sweet, local taste of the Ottawa Valley will soon be Mexico-bound in the hands of hundreds of forest firefighters. The 2018 forest fire season here in Ontario, North America and worldwide has been nothing short of volatile. It is not uncommon in today's interconnected world, for forest firefighting agencies to share human, equipment, and aerial resources. This fire season has seen resourcesharing from all across Canada, from British Columbia to Newfoundland and many points in between, as well as the United States. A little less common (but seemingly on the rise) are resources travelling from points further spread across the globe to aid in the fight during these more volatile fire seasons. According to several sources, this forest fire season has seen the largest contingency of wildland firefighters travel to Ontario from various parts of Mexico to rally to the cause. When local company Timber Isle Maple products was contacted to supply authentic Ontario maple syrup as parting gifts for these hardworking compadres from the far south, they were truly ho-

noured, to say the least. Jordi Butler, co-owner and operator was simply exhilarated. "To be asked to create and supply such a wonderful thank you gift for our wildland firefighting brothers and sisters from Mexico, is an honour that holds very deep ties for Bill and I, and our boys." Bill (also the co-owner and operator of Timber Isle Maple products) and Jordi were both forest firefighters for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry for almost 30 years combined, and it is a bond that will forever be close to their hearts. They are passing their love and knowledge of maple syrup production, as well as forest firefighting on to their three sons; Braedyn, Jordyn and Logyn. You may remember their eldest son Braedyn's 'Maples for Fort Mac' fundraiser that raised $1013 for the Canadian Red Cross' Fort McMurray Wildfire Relief Fund with the help and generosity of our great community. Located just minutes outside the Town of Renfrew, in beautiful Admaston/Bromley Township, Timber Isle Maple Products produces delicious, pure maple syrup, maple confections and more. It is sold locally at the Renfrew

Jordi Butler/Submitted The Butler family gets an up close look at a water bomber. Metro and is also shipped far and wide via their website www.timberislemapleproducts.com. "It is such an incredible feeling knowing these highly trained, hardworking and dedicated individuals will all get to enjoy a truly authentic taste of not just Ontario and Canada, but the Ottawa Valley specifically. It makes us, as a family, feel truly honoured. Our boys are involved in every step of our maple sugaring operation, so we felt it very important for them to be a part of the delivery as well (it was also

the perfect excuse to get back up to Sudbury to visit our fire family, as well as having the boys experience some of the wonder and reverence we still feel so strongly for such amazing people, top notch organizations, awe-inspiring air-

craft, equipment and so much more," said Jordi, while smiling from ear to ear. It meant so much to Jordi, that the usual methods she uses to produce the bottle's neck tags simply would not do, so she per-

sonally hand-inscribed the requested 'Muchas Gracias!!' on each of the hundreds of bottles. 'It somehow feels like coming full-circle in a sense; we couldn't be more honoured to have been thought of and asked to fulfil such a request. We hope all of the wildland firefighters from Mexico had a safe deployment here in Ontario and have an equally safe return trip to their home and families in Mexico. We also hope they enjoy their taste of the Ottawa Valley. Thank you to not only the Mexican forest firefighting contingency, but to all of the talented and highly dedicated individuals (on the frontline and behind the scenes), who leave their homes and families for extended periods of time, in challenging and dangerous conditions, and dedicate themselves to protecting our homes, our cottages, and the natural resources of our children's future."

WEATHER CONTINUES TO BEDEVIL BRWP PADDLES JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com The muggy weather this summer has affected turnout at many of the Bonnechere River Watershed Project's 'Celebrate our Rivers' paddles. The 12th of 13 group paddles in the area was held on the Madawaska River, starting and ending

at the Burnstown Beach Aug. 26, where again humidity and a threat of lightning storms deterred paddlers. Watershed Project chair Kathy Lindsay said the group will likely discuss ways to modify the program. The biggest turnout so far was for July 21's Eganville-to-Fourth Chute paddle, which in-

cluded fiddle entertainment and a barbecue at the Bonnechere Caves. She noted weather extremes made some of the Bonnechere River paddles challenging, with high water in June's Renfrew to Ottawa River outing, and then low water six weeks later on the Fourth Chute stretch. Lindsay said the excursions are important in promoting use of the rivers by giving people a chance to explore new routes in the company of experienced paddlers. The final paddle is

scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with put-in and takeout at the Deacon Bridge. Paddlers will head upstream in the event held in conjunction with the Golden Lake and Area community group. The Madawaska River paddlers headed downstream toward Stewartville before returning to the Burnstown boat launch. The former route from Cherry Point, downstream to the Burnstown Beach, was changed to avoid shuttling of paddlers.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Lindsay noted the group paddles received support from the Ottawa River Institute and the County of Renfrew, as they fit in well with the Ottawa River's designation as a Canadian heritage river. The municipalities have also been helpful, she noted, citing support from Renfrew, Horton,

North Algona Wilberforce, Bonnechere Valley and McNab/Braeside, which provided a barbecue for the latest paddle. The Bonnechere River Watershed Project's mission is "to engage with others to promote awareness and inspire stewardship actions for the Bonnechere River and its watershed."

BUSIEST WEEK YET AT DRAGONFLY GOLF LINKS BILL RAINBOTH This was one of the busiest weeks in the history of Dragonfly Golf links. Apart from normal play and our awesome Leagues, we also hosted a 90-person nine-and-dine for J Lacourse Carpentry on Friday, Aug. 24. Then on Saturday we hosted our first ever Edward Jones Golf Classic with just over 100 people. Kevin Cherry from Edward Jones Investments deserves a ton of credit for organizing a top-notch golf tournament. In addition to being a great event, over $2,500 was raised for Hospice Renfrew. Sunday Aug. 27 was the annual MacKay Manor Golf Tournament with over 60 participants. Thank you all for trusting Dragonfly to host your event - we look forward to doing it again next year! On Monday Aug. 27 Dragonfly hosted the Senior Ladies Intersectionals. Visiting clubs were from Petawawa, Stittsville, and Whitetail. Our ladies were perfect hosts, but unfortunately fell just shy of finishing in 1st first place losing only to Stittsville. Kudos to Bernie Culhane and Bonnie Beattie who won all their matches, (six points). Hole-in-one alert! Dragonfly member Matt Snyder had his first-ever hole-in-one on the seventh hole using his pitching wedge - way to go sharp shooter! Now on to league play: There was a tie for second in the Friday Ladies Stroke Play League on Aug. 24 between Bernie Culhane and Pat Lee. All alone in first place was Pam McFarlane. There was no secret hole winner again this week. Riopelle Painting stroked their way to great round of six under par to win Monday Night Men's League. Enright Tree services finished in the runner up position, and Sean Enright was closest to the pin on #5, and Steven Dick was closest on #7. Two teams separated themselves from the competition this past Tuesday with gross scores at least four strokes from their nearest competitor. Congrats to Valley Automation & Controls who won A flight and to Beatty Pilgrim Construction who won B flight. Closest to the pin winners were Mat Forrest on #13, and Randy Smith on #18. Wednesday men's League found the Mountain Men atop the summit of A flight, and Deslaurier Custom Cabinets assembled a stellar round of their own to win B flight. Closest to the pin winners were Skyler Mullen on #13 and Harry Curry on #18. Thursday Ladies league enjoyed a picture perfect evening of golf in the first 9 of their 18 hole cycle. Closest to the pin winners were Kayla Fraser #18, Philippa Bell on #7, Erin Lairar on #13, and Jenny Dick on #18.
