PERFECT WEATHER, CROWD-PLEASERS DELIGHT FAIR-GOERS
Sherry Haaima/Metroland Sunday's RCMP Musical Ride show rounded out another successful Renfrew Fair. The performance was among several special events that drew large crowds. JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Some people may have stayed away because of the new pricing formula, but overall it was a highly successful Renfrew Fair thanks to the sunny weather and large crowds for the special attractions.
CHECK OUT ●
That was the conclusion of a tired fair manager Judy Dobec and fair board president Jim Enright Sunday as the excitement wound down. "When was the last time we had five days of sunshine (for the fair)?" asked Dobec. Nobody had an answer. Wayne Rostad drew an enthusiastic crowd Thursday night and
the RCMP Musical Ride packed the bandstand and bleachers Sunday afternoon. With decent turnouts for Wednesday's demolition derby and the Hunter Brothers Friday evening and a "huge crowd" Saturday due to the "perfect weather" and the popularity of rocker Sass Jordan, the fair survived the $20 pay-one-
price admission controversy with flying colours. Fair officials admitted they got "lots of complaints" about the $20 price from all ages, so will discuss whether to keep it next year. But the early consensus seems to be that it should be given at least a couple of years to see if people adapt to the change.

PARTNERS, USERS BOOSTING TRAIL EFFORT JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com The need for community partners and support from the public is growing in importance as uncertainty surrounds future funding for the Algonquin Trail. At their last meeting, members of the Algonquin Trail advisory committee say they are encouraged that people are already perceiving the former CP Railbed as an important multiuse trail. As well, several user groups are partnering with the county to upgrade the trail. Jason Davis, Renfrew County's manager of forestry and geographic information systems (GIS), said the committee is leaving the public to decide whether they want to use the 218-kilometre trail before it is finished. While sections of the trail, especially around the towns, have been treated with stone dust, most of the sections yet to be worked on are covered in rough
during snowmobile season and during maintenance, and be accessible to paramedics. Open sections include the route through Arnprior, Renfrew to north of Cobden and Pembroke to Petawawa, with the focus this fall on readying the Renfrew-to-Arnprior section. Next door, Lanark County still has the 'No Trespassing' signs up as it keeps the trail closed until its whole 62 kilometres is ready to be opened later this fall. However, there have been reports of significant numbers of walkers, bicyclists, ATVers and horse riders already using the trail. There have been complaints about riders not cleaning up after their horses on the trail. Lanark County will receive a report this month recommending it follow Renfrew County's lead and partner with local ATV clubs on the trail. "I think that's going to be very welcome in terms of getting the ATV folks in-
volved because they not only contribute countless hours to keeping the trail open, but they also have an enforcement role which is important in this enterprise," said Lanark County Warden John Fenik. Another example of "good partnerships" enhancing the trail is the county's agreement with the Calabogie and District Snowmobile Club regarding the bridge over Dochert Creek in McNab/Braeside, said Davis. The county is providing the decking and siding material, and the snowmobilers are providing the volunteer labour to improve the structure. Just up the line, the county is replacing the bridge over Quinn's Creek, near River Road in Horton. Renfrew County has allowed two construction companies to use small sections of the trail in Renfrew and Arnprior for storing equipment and gravel during major projects this year and next. In Renfrew, Reeve Peter Emon reports Bonnechere Excavating Inc. is providing bushing and grading on the trail from Renfrew to River Road in Horton as compensation. While in Arnprior, Thomas Cavanagh Construction prefers to pay rent for the use of a small section close to

RENFREW ANTI-POVERTY ACTIVIST MOURNED JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com A Renfrew woman killed in a motorcycle crash south of Calabogie Sunday, Sept. 9 is being remembered for her generosity and anti-poverty activism. Joanne Ciphery, 54, was a passenger on a motorcycle that went off Highway 511 north of the White Lake Road intersection about 2 p.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver Brian Robinson, 57, of Pembroke, was airlifted to Ottawa Hospital with major injuries. "She was an amazing person ... with a heart the size of a house," said Felicite Stairs, a founding member of the Renfrew County Poverty Action Network (RCPAN). "She's a huge loss." "She was always advocating for other people. She'll be sorely missed," said RCPAN executive director Lyn Smith. "Our hearts are with her two daughters." Many people's enduring memory of Ciphery is of her bustling around the kitchen at Trinity-St. Andrew's United Church in Renfrew overseeing the cooking of community suppers. "She was a driving force behind those suppers," said Stairs. "She was a great cook," she added, noting she had just won several ribbons at the Renfrew Fair for her culinary and
craft/sewing exhibits. Stairs said the last time she saw Ciphery was Saturday at the Trinity-St. Andrew's booth at the fair, where both were volunteering. Not only was Ciphery the custodian at the church, she volunteered for many of its causes. She was also a tireless supporter of the Renfrew Legion and had been planning a work bee for Saturday, Sept. 15. That has been cancelled and the Legion is considering holding a future event in honour of Ciphery. As a single parent in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Ciphery had first-hand experience with poverty and became actively involved in the Renfrew Coalition Against Poverty. Stairs said she was "always taking care of people ... feeding them. She was larger than life." Smith said Ciphery had a weak spot for anyone in a tough situation. "She was always asking if she could do anything to help ... it was always out of the goodness of her heart." Smith remembers Ciphery organizing community Christmas parties, ensuring a full turkey dinner was served and that Santa Claus showed up with gifts for the youngsters. "There was always tons of food," she said. "It must have been a lot of work for her. She was such a hard worker for other people."
In a statement on the Renfrew Legion website, public relations official Kate Windle called Ciphery a "long-time, caring, kind and giving community leader, who guided our children and befriended everyone she met." She praised Ciphery's "generous spirit" and "her constant desire to make our world a better place," adding she hoped that philosophy will be "carried forward in those who were fortunate to know her. "God bless Joanne for saying what others fear to say and doing what other would never dare to attempt." Windle noted that Ciphery's latest volunteer endeavour was to host a now cancelled work bee Sept. 15 to clean the interior of the Legion from stem to stern in preparation for Nov. 11 activities. She said the Legion is looking into holding a Joanne Ciphery fundraiser so it will be able to pay a team of professional cleaners, plumbers and pipefitters to do the necessary upgrades and repairs. Smith has "fond memories" of Ciphery's sunny disposition and lovely smile. "It's so sad, but at least she left a footprint on earth. It shows you should do what you can do because you never know how much more time you have." The fatal crash is being investigated by Lanark County OPP officers and OPP Technical Traffic Collision investigators. The highway was closed for about five hours. Ciphery is survived by her daughters Sophie and Brittany.

SCHOOL CROSSING GUARDS AIDED BY TOUGHER RULES JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com
OLG/Submitted Mark and Stephanie Wright of Renfrew won $100,000 with ENCORE. The winning ticket was purchased at Irving on Stewart Street in Renfrew.
RENFREW COUPLE WINS $100,000 OLG is offering its congratulations to Mark and Stephanie Wright of Renfrew for winning $100,000 with ENCORE in the Aug. 24 LOTTO MAX draw. They matched the last six of seven ENCORE numbers in exact order to win the $100,000 prize. "We usually play LOTTO MAX and LOTTO 6/49 - and always with ENCORE," the couple shared, while at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to pick up their winnings. Stephanie, a nurse at Renfrew
Victoria Hospital, scanned the ticket on the OLG Lottery App when she discovered the windfall. "I called Mark right away - neither of us believed it," she laughed. "It's very exciting," said Mark, who works as a security tech. The couple have two children and plan on finally taking their honeymoon after 15 years of marriage. "It's still hard to believe," said Stephanie. ENCORE can be played in conjunction with most online lottery games for an extra $1. There is an ENCORE draw every day. The winning ticket was purchased at Irving on Stewart Street in Renfrew.
School crossing guards are back with more support in the form of increased punishment for drivers who endanger pedestrians. Penalties have increased for drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians at crossovers, school crossings and crosswalks. The maximum penalty rose from $500 to $1,000 and from three to four demerit points. A news release from provincial Transportation Minister John Yakabuski reminds drivers, including cyclists, that they must yield the entire roadway at pedestrian crossovers, school crossings and other locations where there is a crossing guard, and cannot proceed until those on foot have finished crossing the road completely. As well, the maximum fine for failing to stop for a school bus (first offence) has gone up from $2,000 to $4,000 with possible imprisonment up to six months. The province also instituted
dramatic increases in penalties for distracted driving. Motorists convicted of careless driving causing bodily harm or death will face fines from $2,000 to $50,000, six demerit points and a driver's licence suspension of up to five years, as well as possible jail time of up to two years. Fines are doubled in community safety zones near schools and other public areas. "Time and time again we've seen families devastated because a loved one is hurt or killed by a dangerous driver, and the driver walks away with no more than a slap on the wrist," said Yakabuski. "This new charge sends a clear message that dangerous driving won't be tolerated. "The number of pedestrians being injured and killed on our roads has reached a critical level," added Yakabuski. "Tougher penalties help, but we need everyone to step up and do their part by driving safely and responsibly." In Renfrew, it will mark the first full school year in which there will be no crossing guard coverage dur-
ing the lunch hour. The Town of Renfrew eliminated those duties effective Jan. 1 this year, citing the different lunch hours at schools and the boost to the minimum wage. The town pointed out that only a handful of elementary school students go home for lunch. The limiting of crossing guards to before and after school coverage is expected to save the town about $15,000 this year. There is a controversy brewing regarding the Barr Street crosswalk at Queen Elizabeth school. While not having a crossing guard, the crosswalk was patrolled by teachers in previous years. That is not happening this year to the dismay of some parents, who note the area is heavily congested with vehicles, school buses and pedestrians just prior to school letting in at 9:20 a.m. and when school lets out at 3:40 p.m. Town staff have been alerted to the concerns and will hold a meeting with school board officials to see if any remedies are available. There are crossing guards on crosswalks on Veterans Memorial Boulevard, Hall and Munroe avenues and three spots on Raglan Street serving Queen Elizabeth, Central and St. Thomas schools, but none in the area of Our Lady of Fatima school.

Renfrew's newest wrestling stars have done it again. Vipers Wrestling Club members Jolie Brisco and Savana Pinsent both placed first in their divisions in the Mexico Cup competition Sept. 5. The 16-year-olds, travelling with Team Ontario, were competing in their first major international tournament. Brisco and Pinsent were in Villahermosa, Mexico representing Renfrew, the Ottawa Valley and the Vipers Wrestling Club. After their first-place finishes, they took part in wrestling camps hosted by the Mexican team. They were scheduled to return to Renfrew Sept 12. The wins in Mexico are just the latest accomplishments this year for the pair. In July, Brisco finished first and Pinsent second at the Ontario Cup against some of the best wrestlers in the province as well as some international entries. In April Pinsent struck gold at the Wrestling Canadian Nationals in Edmonton, earning the title of Under-17 Canadian champion in the 61-kg division. Briso finished seventh at nationals, with both girls qualifying for the United World Wrestling Cadet Trials. There they were both fourth. Earlier, Brisco won bronze at both OFSAA and provincials. Pinsent won silver at OFSAA in 2017 and bronze in 2018 and silver at Cadet provincials in both 2016 and 2017. She was named most valuable performer at this year's U.S. Summer Nationals. The girls are coached by Harry Smith and Janine McDonald. Brisco has been wrestling for 10 years. In a Mercury story about one of her many gold medals wins back in 2011, the then nine-yearold was described as a "62-lb. bundle of energy." In a fundraising appeal for the Mexico trip, Brisco, who has been in the top three in Ontario in her class for most of her wrestling career, said she feels "ready to take my wrestling up to the next level." The Mexico Cup was "a fun, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get in some higher level training to help bring me into the next season as well as the international experience will be a big bonus," she added. Pinsent, who has been wrestling since she was 9, says she quickly "grew to love everything" about the sport. In her fundraising appeal, she explained she has been striving to get to more international tournaments to prepare herself for tougher competition. "I continue to push myself and my teammates to always move forward, in wrestling, as well as in other sports I am involved in, such as rugby, cross country, and hockey," she said. "It is a long road of wrestling ahead, and I'm going to continue as long as I can." Members of the Vipers Wrestling Club are in training at the Renfrew Recreation Centre as they prepare another season of competition.

JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com When nominations opened for the Oct. 22 municipal elections, candidates were cautioned that serving as a municipal councillor is much more complicated than it used to be a generation ago. New duties, liability rules and codes of conduct, as well as lack of privacy on social media, compel councillors to be more careful in what they say and do. That was made clear Aug. 29 when Renfrew County council accepted a report from its integrity commissioner, Guy Giorno. He ruled that Warden Jennifer Murphy had contravened council's code of conduct by threatening on Facebook to sue an unidentified person who had filed an earlier complaint (no lawsuit was ever filed). However, Giorno, who made it clear he wasn't speculating whether Murphy had cause to sue, did not feel the breach warranted a penalty, especially given an apology was provided. He did suggest that it be emphasized to councillors, in future
code of conduct training, the importance of allowing complainants to operate free from reprisal and the threat of reprisal. Renfrew Reeve Peter Emon took the chair temporarily during county council discussion of the report. In a statement, Murphy admitted her passion sometimes gets the better of her. She indicated her words in this instance were ill-advised and promised to be guided by the code of conduct in the future. Several county councillors questioned the cost and timing of the report, coming out less than two months prior to the municipal election. However, Murphy does not have to face the electorate because she has been acclaimed to another term as mayor of Bonnechere Valley. Giorno's report revealed that Murphy made the lawsuit threat in a Facebook message in 2017 to an unidentified relative of the subject. Giorno explained that "threatening a lawsuit against someone who submitted, is believed to have submitted, or might possibly submit a Code complaint is
prohibited by paragraph 9.2(b)." That paragraph reads: "Neither staff nor any member of council shall take, threaten to take, discharge, discipline, personally attack, harass, intimidate, etc. a person who has reported a violation of this Code of Conduct." He went on to state: "The Respondent's threat to sue was a reprisal, and paragraph 9.2(b) was placed in the Code to prevent reprisals." Reprisals and threats of reprisal "undermine the purpose of the Code and may have a chilling effect on future complaints," he added. Giorno took into account Murphy's explanation that she did not believe she was threatening or intimidating the complainant or the family member, only that she
wanted to apologize to the latter because she would be cutting off contact if a lawsuit was filed. He said Murphy had acknowledged that her communication was open to being taken badly, offered to take steps to "mitigate this error," and apologized to the complainant's family member. Despite a request by Murphy, Giorno said he isn't publicly naming the complainant. Last fall he provided county council with interim reports on the two earlier "related" complaints, one by the unnamed private citizen and the other by North Algona Wilberforce Mayor Deborah Farr. Giorno, who is the integrity commissioner for several Ontario municipalities, has been busy recently, also issuing rulings on several complaints including

JOB-SEEKERS, JOBS MATCHMAKING FLAWED Given the number of help wanted/we're hiring signs sprouting around town lately, it appears there are plenty of jobs going begging. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be enough workers either skilled enough or motivated to take them. With the disconnect between Renfrew County's actual unemployment rate of close to 10 per cent and the amount of unfilled job postings, it's obvious we've been doing something wrong when it comes to preparing youth for the workforce. The problem, which has been afflicting us for some time, appears to be getting worse. If we don't address it soon, employers might have to start resorting to robots instead of human workers to fill some of these empty positions. If we can find enough workers to create robots, that is. A Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) study released last week paints a gloomy picture when it comes to the country's ability to match workers and jobs. Almost 40 per cent of small- and medium-sized Canadian businesses are having difficulty finding new employees. An estimated 400,000 jobs were unfilled at the start of this year. As 250,000 Canadian construction workers near retirement, only half of them will be replaced if something doesn't change. And it's not just that one sector. Manufacturing and retail are also having trouble finding employees (so much for the contention raising the minimum wage would kill jobs). Arnprior Aerospace has had signs up along busy thoroughfares for months appealing for workers. Madawaska Hardwood Flooring, ParaMed, Groves Park Lodge, Smiths Construction, No Frills, Rexall, Macs and Timmy's have all been seeking employees recently. Ask any roofer or most other tradesperson in town, and they'll tell you they'd give their right arm for more competent workers. What to do about the labour shortage? No one sector can come up with solutions on its own. Governments, educators, parents, employers and employee groups all have roles to play to make the jobs going unfilled more accessible and appealing to those out of work. Not everyone can spend their working lives developing new video games, taste-testing scotch or binge-watching television programs. Most jobs have perks and attractions, but they need to be publicized if a workplace is to become a destination of choice. Educators and parents should be open to admiring a wide spectrum of jobs instead of focusing on an elite few. Not everyone is suited to go to university. Scholarships and bursaries should be shared more fairly with those who are not taking the academic route to the workforce. Governments should provide better incentives for students to go into the skilled trades and give them a financial break if they're studying in areas in which there are labour shortages. Employers need to improve their game too, putting more effort into making workplaces an enjoyable place to be and responding to modern employees' growing desire for work-lifestyle balance. Those hiring should also take a chance on less qualified workers and newcomers to Canada and provide training so they can contribute, instead of shying away from them as indicated in the BDC study. And more employers should be following the lead of companies such as Shopify, IBM and other tech firms seeking out employees with smarts, drive and natural curiosity and training them instead of automatically taking the best educated or most experienced. New approaches like that to training and hiring are obviously necessary if all those empty job positions are to be filled.

WHO WE ARE LETTERS & COMMENTARY SEPTEMBER IS CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH To the editor: September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and for the 1,500 children and teens diagnosed with cancer each year, it is an important time for us all to consider what we can do to help children live long, healthy lives. A cancer diagnosis can be devastating for anyone, but it is particularly incomprehensible when a child is facing cancer. While childhood cancers account for less than one per cent of all cancers diagnosed in Canada, they take a significant toll on Canadian families. Childhood cancer is the number 1 cause of diseaserelated death in Canadian children past infancy and for those children who survive their diagnosis, two out of every three will suffer long-term side effects from their treatment. When a child is diagnosed with cancer, there is
a lot to cope with. Organizations like the Canadian Cancer Society can provide reliable information through the Cancer Information Service, peer support for parents through a variety of programs and transportation to treatment through Wheels of Hope. But the reality is a childhood cancer diagnosis is life-altering and, simply, one child with cancer is one too many. The good news is progress has been made and continues to be made every day. In the 1980s, the fiveyear survival rate for childhood cancer was 71 per cent. Today, this has risen to 83 per cent because of investments in research that have led to more effective diagnoses and treatment. Thanks to donors to the Canadian Cancer Society, we have invested more than $50 million in the last 15 years, supporting more than 170 research projects to help children survive cancer and thrive well beyond. A recent example is Dr. Rod Rassekh and Dr. Colin
Ross who developed a genetic test to predict which children are likely to sustain heart damage as a result of their chemotherapy treatment. By identifying these atrisk children, doctors can switch them to a safer chemotherapy drug that will effectively treat their cancer and improve their longterm heart health. We are grateful for the ongoing support from our community and partners in addressing all cancers, including childhood cancer. We have made strides but there is much more work to do and we need your help. I encourage you to get involved through volunteering or supporting our Gifts for the Cure aimed at investing in game-changing research and support programs for children with cancer and their families. Together we can make a difference. For more information, please visit cancer.ca.

FIDDLERS TO HOLD MONTHLY DANCES IN RENFREW STARTING SEPT. 15 JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com The Renfrew County Fiddlers Association is aiming to build on the success of its 40th anniversary party in June with monthly dances starting Saturday, Sept. 15. Each of the dances for the rest of the year will have a featured fiddler, starting with Ian Hamilton in September. Other talented fiddlers lined up for the dances include Dennis Harrington on Oct. 13, Terri-Lynn Mahusky on Nov. 10 and Brian Hebert on Dec. 2. Each dance begins at 7 p.m. at the MaTe-Way Activity Centre. The Renfrew County Fiddlers kick things off as a group, followed by entertainment by individual musicians and step-dancers. The featured fiddler plays from about 8:15 to 9 p.m. Then all the fiddlers join for the rest of the dance, which runs to about 11:30 p.m. "Come out for some friendly chat, great tunes, dancing and a little socializing," urges association president Bob Prudhomme. "Don't forget your dancing shoes." Hamilton, the first featured fiddler was born in London, Ont. and now lives in Cobden. He comes from a long line of fiddlers, as his father, grandfather and greatgrandfather all played the instrument. Hamilton has actively competed in
open class fiddling for many years with great success. After retiring from competitive playing, he returned in 2011, winning the 50-64-age category in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017. He has taught fiddle music in the Ottawa Valley for many years and also regularly judges fiddle contests. Hamilton plays with four different Valley country bands in and around the Ottawa Valley. Harrington was born in the Ottawa Valley and began his fiddling career in 1982, with lessons from Randy Foster. He is past president of Renfrew County Fiddlers Association, serving in 1989-91 and 1997-98. Harrington entered fiddle contests in his early teens, winning titles and accolades in Ontario and the Maritimes. He has composed more than 75 tunes and has released three solo recordings. He has recorded with many Ottawa Valley artists and is a sought-after country backup fiddler. For the last 11 years Harrington has hosted the 'Cross Canada Fiddling' show on Valley Heritage Radio, Sundays from noon to 2 p.m. He, along with members of The Countrymen, were proud to be inducted in the Ottawa Valley Music Hall of Fame in 2016. Harrington has his own band "Heritage Country," which entertains at dances and functions around the area. He also continues to play with Douglas Connec-
tion and The Countrymen throughout the Ottawa Valley at dances, fundraisers and country festivals. Mahusky started playing the fiddle at 10 years old. Her first teacher was Joe Quilty, one of the founding members of the Renfrew County Fiddlers. She has studied under such fiddlers as Dan Schryer, Louis Schryer, Ian Hamilton, Brian Hebert and Dennis Lanctot. Starting at age 15, Mahusky has competed in fiddle championships in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes. She has released two CDs and has composed Reel for Shawn McKenna, dedicated to a fiddle fan. Hebert was born in the Ottawa Valley and started playing fiddle in the early 1960s. He was inspired by Ward Allen and appeared with Mac Beattie on various radio and television shows. He was recognized for creating a high school arts credit course in Canadian fiddle for the Renfrew County District School Board. He teaches fiddling in schools and fiddle camps. He has also been a judge at fiddle contests. Hebert was honoured by the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Championships organization for his contributions to the growth and development of Canadian fiddling. He was inducted into the Ottawa Valley Music Hall of Fame in 2009. He is known for such beautiful tunes as Ramona, Sunset On The Ottawa, Children's Waltz and many more.

OPINION
A CATERPILLAR WITH A MOST UNUSUAL DIET WE SHOULD ALL THANK THESE CATERPILLARS FOR THEIR SERVICE, SAYS MICHAEL RUNTZ MICHAEL RUNTZ Column
Frequently we generalize about nature. For example, it is oft times stated that owls fly at night. While most do, certain species - most notably snowy and northern hawk owls - hunt during the day. Another generalization is that caterpillars only eat leaves. While generally true, I recently encountered a butterfly whose caterpillar is anything but vegetarian. I met the butterfly on the Barron Canyon Road in Algonquin Park, where I was photographing woolly alder aphids on speckled alder branches. There are many types of aphids but all are small insects possessing a drill-like proboscis for extracting sugar-rich sap from plants. Aphids are complex animals whose life history includes live birth (viviparity), the production without male participation (parthenogenesis) of several generations comprised solely of flightless females, and ultimately the creation of a winged generation comprised of both sexes that mate and lay eggs that overwinter. From these eggs the following spring a new generation of wingless females arises. Woolly alder aphids are similar to other aphids with one major difference: They exude white filaments that cover their body in a woolly coat. As a result, we often mistake them for fungus. As if that appearance was not protection enough, woolly alder aphids have bodyguards. Carpenter ants tend to them, protecting them from danger. Like professional bodyguards, the ants are paid for their service. Aphids secrete sugar-rich droplets from their abdomen that the ants eat. Like farmers tending their cows, the ants "milk" the aphids, stroking them with their antennae to stimulate them into releasing their reward. The alders were in shade and a gusty breeze kept moving the branches, making photography difficult. After half an hour I managed to attain a few reasonable images and was about to leave when a small orange and black butterfly flew by. It was a harvester, a butterfly I'd seen only a few times previously. These butterflies are unique in North America in being carnivorous as caterpillars. Harvester caterpillars eat - as you likely guessed - woolly alder aphids! The harvester flew erratically up and down the road. I followed it as best I could
Michael Runtz/Submitted The Harvester is the only butterfly in North America to have a carnivorous caterpillar. but at one point it appeared to be gone. But then it reappeared and flew back into the alder from which it had originally flown. I ran back, hoping to see it lay its eggs among the aphids. Several times the butterfly flitted around aphid-covered branches but whenever it tried to land, carpenter ants seemed to drive it away. Finally it settled down next to a group of unguarded aphids and soon appeared to be laying eggs. After completing its task, the tiny harvester flew out of the alder and landed on bracken growing along the roadside. It rested for a few minutes before flying again, this time vanishing from sight, perhaps looking for another batch of woolly alder aphids to visit. The great entomologist Stephen Marshall once wrote that if aphids had no predators, parasites, or diseases, one female could produce 600 billion descendants in a single season. I think we should all thank harvesters for their service! The Nature email is mruntz@start.ca Michael Runtz is a longtime columnist who teaches natural history and ornithology at Carleton University. He has worked as a naturalist in provincial and national parks, hosted the television series Wild by Nature, and has written 11 books on natural history topics.

RISING MAPLE SYRUP ENTRIES SWEET NEWS FOR FAIR OFFICIALS JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com
John Carter/Metroland Presley Rochon of Cobden with 'Taylor' was the only entry in the Renfrew Fair's pre-4H novice dairy showmanship class. She received the Bruce and Donna Briscoe Memorial Trophy from Dennis Briscoe. It was noted that some years there are as many as 20 entries, but the lowering of the age limit to join 4H has reduced participation recently.
The Renfrew Fair attracted a record number of maple syrup entries this year. Judge Murray Humphries had 90 bottles of maple syrup and 11 maple sugar blocks to test, the biggest exhibit class at the fair. The grand champion exhibitor was a familiar one - Beth Wallace took home the Russ Wilkins 'Big Boiler' Memorial Trophy and $100. It marks the sixth time the Wallace family of the White Lake Road 'Mountain' area has won the prize, with Beth winning in 2013 and 2014. Four members of the Wilkins family made the presentation in memory of their father who was renowned for his maple syrup tapped on Pucker Street and friendly competitions with friends and neighbours. Renfrew Fair manager Judy Dobec was delighted with the number of entries "It keeps rising each year,"
she said. Exhibits in most areas were likely about the same as usual, although it appeared the junior fair entries were up, she added. The fair board is happy there are a number of new exhibitors. And some longtime exhibitors are trying new areas. For instance, Admaston's Maynard van der Galien, who is a regular winner in the hay and corn competition, last year "tested the waters in the culinary arts (bread-making) class to see how my home-made bread would do." He earned a first, so this year he entered three classes, earning a first in 60% whole wheat bread and seconds in white and raisin bread. Van der Galien encourages other men to enter the competition that is normally dominated by women. He has been baking bread for more than 20 years, mostly as a hobby. "I use my own recipe that works best. I knead the bread by hand, no mixers, etc.," he said.

JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com On the Road Again has been off the air for 11 years, but it's obvious host Wayne Rostad still has many fans in the Ottawa Valley. And it's clear the 70year-old musician has many fond memories of the Renfrew area. Rostad drew an enthu-
siastic crowd to his concert Thursday, Sept. 6 at the Renfrew Fair and rewarded them with many of their favourite songs and stories, filled with Valley references. Noting that as a boy he used to ride through Renfrew on his way to his Pembroke home, he quipped: "The main street hasn't improved much." He sang a new song about a rendez-
vous in room 21 at Renfrew's one-time famous venue, the White House. He gave shout-outs to the Gould family, Boyd and Rose MacLaren, Finnigan's, the old Highway Drive-in, Valley Heritage Radio, and the fair organizers for doing a "great job." In response to audience requests, he even sang 'Christmas in the Valley'.
He had fun with his audience, which responded in kind, shouting "encore, encore" when the power went out briefly early in his show and then starting to sing 'I saw the light'. Rostad also pitted the men against the women in the audience to see who could do the best job in singing the chorus of 'Boney Fingers' (the women rocked, the men sucked).
John Carter/Metroland Wayne Rostad roars like a bear to the delight of the crowd at the Renfrew Fair as he performs the Bear Song (J. Ulyses Moses Hanson).

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

SCHULTZ, BERTRAND, VANDERPLOEG WIN RENFREW FAIR DEMO DERBY DRIVER BRANDON HANNIMAN REMEMBERED WITH SPECIAL TRIBUTE SHERRY HAAIMA sherr y.haaima@metroland.com The number of drivers was down but crowd enthusiasm remained strong at the Wednesday night demolition derby that kicked off the 164th edition of the Renfrew Fair. The evening included a special award in memory of derby enthusiast and driver Brandon Hanniman, one of two Renfrew youths killed in an Oct. 27, 2017 car crash that injured two other local teens. Hanniman, 18, was a second-place heat winner in the 2017 derby. A special trophy, $50 prize and ball cap were awarded to the driver making the most aggressive, clean hit of the night. Calvin Bertrand, overall winner of the eight cylinder pro class, received the inaugural award, presented by Brandon's little brother Conner, as well as cousins
Georgia Clemmer and Hannah Knight-Locke. Brandon's father, Tom, said the tribute was among a number of wonderful initiatives that are helping keep his son's memory alive. "There's been a lot of good stuff going on," he said. "Timberwolves hockey did something for him, there's memorial award at the high school and his grandparents made a big fireplace in his honour - Brandon was always the guy at the bon fire." The tributes underscore how special Brandon was. "It just goes to show how many people he touched," said Tom, noting Brandon loved the derby and most anything associated with the outdoors. The derby got underway a little after 7 p.m. Horton Township's Jesse Schultz continued his winning ways, picking up top honours in both the fourcylinder and six-cylinder classes. Wes Vanderploeg was the winner of the eight-cylinder stock class and Maryann Brewer won for best paint job, an honour bestowed based on crowd support.

John Carter/Metroland Former Renfrew Mercury editor Dan Donohue and long-time run supporter Patti Leclaire, Renfrew Terry Fox Run co-ordinators, encourage everyone to come out at noon Sunday, Sept. 16 to Ma-Te-Way Park to support the battle against cancer.
FIRST RENFREW RUN FOR TERRY FOX REMEMBERED WELL BY NEW CO-ORDINATOR JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Renfrew's Terry Fox Run co-ordinator Dan Donohue remembers vividly the first time the town honoured one of Canada's most beloved heroes. On Sept. 1, 1980 after running almost 5,400 kilometres in 143 days, Fox had to give up his cross-country Marathon of Hope that was raising money for cancer research when he found out his cancer had spread to his lungs. A groundswell of support rose across the country for the stricken runner, with Canadians eager to show their esteem for Fox through strongly backing a telethon that raised $10 million and arranging runs in many communities that fall. Donohue, whose family was well-known as the owners of Donohue Motors, was editor of the Renfrew Mercury at the time. He was approached to help publicize a run in Renfrew. He remembers newspaper owner Fred Runge agreeing without hesitation to make the Mercury an initial sponsor of the run, which attracted a large number of participants and raised a significant donation for the Canadian Cancer Society. "It was very successful," he said. The Terry Fox Foundation was formed in the aftermath of the fundraisers to fulfil Fox's dream of raising $1 for every Canadian ($24.1 million), which it did by February 1981. When Fox died on June 28, 1981, runs in his honour were arranged on Sept. 13 and they have been continuing each year ever since. Renfrew has held 36 runs
starting in 1982, raising more than $400,000. Donohue, who left the Mercury later in the 1980s to edit a newspaper in Kingston, returned to Renfrew two years ago. Casting around "for a good cause to support," he asked longtime organizers Tanya Campbell and Sheena Pilgrim at last year's Renfrew Terry Fox Run if he could help. Voilà, he is now Renfrew co-coordinator with Patti Leclaire, who has supported the run for several years, promoting donations and participation through her work at the Bank of Nova Scotia. This year's Renfrew Terry Fox Run will be held on Sunday, Sept. 16 with registration from 11 a.m. to noon in the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre. Participants will have the choice of five- or 10-kilometre runs on the Millennium Trail (water stations will be set up along the way) or a two-kilometre route on the Ma-Te-Way track. Ottawa Valley Physiotherapy will lead a pre-run stretch session and Sun Life and the Renfrew Lions will offer a barbecue lunch and refreshments for all participants.
Cobden, Griffith Runs Terry Fox Runs are also planned for Cobden and Griffith on Sunday, Sept. 16. Logos Land is hosting the Cobden Run on a 9.9kilometre scenic route from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., centred at the Ark. There will be a barbecue, snacks and bottled water available. The Griffith Run is set for 10 a.m. (registration starts at 9 a.m.) at Griffith Building Supply with five- and 10-kilometre routes along Church and Flying Club roads.

SECOND-PLACE FINISH FOR DRAGONFLY MEN'S INTERSECTIONAL TEAM On Sept. 1 we hosted the annual Golf Tournament for the Renfrew Legion at Dragonfly Golf Links. This year there were 96 participants - its largest field to date! I would like to thank Greg Wallbeck and the staff from the legion for allowing us to host your tournament. Dragonfly hosted the senior men's Intersectional event on Tuesday Sept. 4. Visiting teams from Casselview Golf Club, Manderley Golf Club, and Petawawa Golf clubs enjoyed a perfect day for golf, and each club was sure to tell us how much they enjoyed the course. Dragonfly finished in second place behind the team from Manderley. Congrats to the entire Dragonfly team, but in particular to Chris O'Brien and Ben Treidlinger for winning all of their
matches. Our league report once again begins with our Friday Ladies League where I am happy to report that we have a winner of our secret hole contest - finally! Congrats to Kathy Hamilton who won a $72 gift certificate. Joanne Dumouchel took third place and Donna Falcon too second. Our first place finisher was Therese Williams, who had one of the best rounds of the year with a gross score of 35, one under par! On to Monday men's league where the Weapons of Grass Destruction continued their golfing dominance, finishing in first place. The Monday Mashers had a great round of their own finishing in the runner-up position. Closest to the pin winners were Richard Afelskie on No. 18, and Dragon-
fly's own player assistant extraordinaire, Joe Proulx on No. 13. On Tuesday Layton Knight Contracting shot an amazing gross score of 10 under par, winning A flight (gross score), and The Pack were the leaders of B flight - three strokes better than the next best team. Closest to the pin winners were Gord Thompson on No. 5, and Dave Eady on No. 7. Wednesday night had some threatening weather rolling through but we still managed to have enough teams to make the night official. Cobus homes finished in first place in A flight and Deslauriers Custom Cabinets were the winners of B flight for the second week in a row. Cal Smith was closest to the pin on No. 5, and Keith Bilson was closest on No. 7. The next edition of the Mercury will be the last official Men's League report of 2018, though I will still have the results for our Men's Night closing tournaments, and our Ladies closing tournament as well.

JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Asked why Mack MacKenzie Motors has enjoyed 60 years of success in Renfrew, president Greg MacKenzie didn't hesitate. "Customer retention," he said. "You've got to look after the customer." He noted with pride that the General Motors-ChevroletBuick dealership has been voted No. 1 in the 18-member Eastern Ontario grouping's customer satisfaction index in each of the past four years. He attributes the success to the "easy, comfortable" sales atmosphere at the dealership, belief in their product and a large proficient service department. "We have a different way ... we're not high pressure." Mack MacKenzie Motors is celebrating 60 years in business with an anniversary sale and customer appreciation barbecue from noon to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14. "We're inviting all our customers, past and present, to drop in, say hi, go for a test drive," said MacKenzie, adding the company is giving away a barbecue and door prizes throughout the day. MacKenzie said the dealership attracts clients from all over the Upper Ottawa Valley, from east of Ottawa to north of Petwawa, both on the Ontario and Quebec side. Some customers have been with the company for the whole 60 years, he said. "We've seen children and now grandchildren of our early customers," he said. "We don't sell for one, we sell for everyone. If you look after a customer, then you'll get the next generation too." Mack MacKenzie Motors has

35 employees and sells about 250 new and 125 used cars a year, with trucks being the big attraction. The record of success served the company well when in 2009, General Motors of Canada closed about 40 per cent of its 700 dealerships in Canada. The Renfrew dealership not only survived the review but has grown significantly since then. The company has come a long way since its founder, William 'Mack' MacKenzie, began selling cars off his front lawn at 140 Hall Ave. A book by Greg's niece, Sara MacKenzie, put together for the family business' 50th anniversary details how Mack MacKenzie worked his way up to office manager at Armatage Motors, the Chrysler dealer across from the O'Brien Theatre. In 1958 at the age of 33, he was appointed the General Motors Chevrolet-Oldsmobile dealer for Renfrew. His first sale was a 1959 Impala to Dr. A.T. Mackie. Within a year, the dealership moved to facilities on Stewart Street. By 1962 the business had outgrown the site, so MacKenzie bought a lot and machine shop across from the fairgrounds, where the dealership stands today. There were expansions in 1976, 2004 and 2016, as well as a deal with Barker Motors in 2004 that saw the body shop on Burnstown Road in Horton close down and eventually become a selfstorage business. Mack's wife Norma and his children - Brian, Terry, Sheryl and Greg - all worked in the business, with Greg taking over as dealer principal in 2015. The family connection is continuing as Greg's son, Blair, now works at the dealership.
The family business has a strong tradition of giving back to the community with frequent donations to local health, sports and community organizations. Greg MacKenzie notes the "business is evolving," but is optimistic the dealership will continue to thrive, especially if the fourlane highway extension brings more industry to Renfrew. The company is already adapting to new trends by being one of two dealerships in the Ottawa Valley to have electric cars and by allowing customers to buy its cars online.

The event, a fundraiser for the fight against prostate cancer, will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15 at the Renfrew Fairgrounds. Organizer Ray Beimers expects at least 200 vehicles will turn out if the weather is good as predicted.
Last year about 250 vehicles from all over the Upper Ottawa Valley filled the fairgrounds. The seventh annual Summer's End Big Rig Show 'N' Shine for Dad will be held in conjunction with the car show. Motorbikes, sleds and vans will also be on display.
Everyone's welcome to drop by and "show off your toy," says Beimers. Show vehicle admission is $5 with spectator admission by donation. Among those planning to attend are Dwaine and Mary Turcotte with their three classic cars.

GEOFFREY MEREDYTH CAFLEY
October 1, 1944 - August 26, 2018 Surrounded by the love of friends and family, Geoffrey Meredyth Cafley, passed away peacefully after a short illness at the Almonte General Hospital at the age of 74. He was the loving husband for 30 years of Susan Carol (Spinks). He will be greatly missed by his children, Matthew; Julie (Luc); Chad (Marisa) and Kirk (Robin). He was adored by his grandchildren Taylor, Lily, Zacharie, Théo, Joseph, Aubrey & Bodhi. Son of the late Margaret (Fargher) and Ronald Cafley, he is survived by his siblings, Judith (Gordon); Elizabeth (Sher); Mark (Nancy) and Rennie. He was a professor of accounting at Algonquin College and remembered as an entertaining teacher. He sold many cars at Arnprior Chrysler that had only been driven by elderly women. He was known for his dry sense of humour, that hid a deep sensitivity and love for others. He told us he loved us, by asking the timing of our most recent oil change. He was deeply generous and kind with friends, family and complete strangers. His favourite spot was smoking a cigar on his boat at the cottage. Arrangements by the Boyce Funeral Home Ltd., 138 Daniel Street North, Arnprior. Visitations were held Friday August 31, 2018 from 7-9pm and Saturday after 10am. A memorial service took place Saturday at 11am at the Boyce Chapel. A private burial will occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Parkinson Canada in Geoff’s honour. Jane Theaker
1939-2018 Born in Brampton, Ontario to parents John and Dorothy Gray and step mother Jean Gray. Jane attended Nursing College in Guelph and went on to have a long enjoyable career in nursing from operating rooms to maternity to palliative care, yet she valued her family and friends most of all. She will be remembered for her remarkable spirit, her unfaltering optimism and extraordinary joy of living. Jane was the best of company-articulate, witty, wise, generous and so very kind. Her pleasures included literature, playing piano, singing, baking pies, shopping, playing cards, coffee with friends and most of all helping other people. She lived every day as we all wish we could-fully, happily and thankfully. Jane will be hugely missed by her family, Richard (Hengameh Arshibeklash), Daniel, Kristi (Jeff Fulford), Jennifer and late infant son Christopher. She was “Grandma Jane” to Simon, Kaelan, Megan, Dante and Connor. She will also be dearly missed by her brother Bill (Ethyle) Gray of Oakville, late sister Linda Masson of Edmonton and brother Tim (Sandra) Gray of Guelph as well as many nieces and nephews. NOVENA TO St. Jude. O Holy St. Jude, Apostle and martyr, near kinsman of Jesus Christ, faithful intercessor of all who invoke your special patronage in time of need, to you I have recourse from the bottom of my heart and humbly beg to whom God has given great power to come to my assistance. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in necessity, Oh Star of the Sea. Help me and show me, here you are “my mother”. Oh Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of heaven and earth. I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to secure me in my necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. ANDY SKLEPOWICZ This has been a summer to remember and the intense heat has only been matched by the massive downpours that had me thinking of building an ark. Even the golfers are ready to cool off and stepping onto a sheet of ice will be welcome relief. The curling club is putting the final touches on summer projects; a new roof will sit above the ice shed, which should relieve the drips onto the ice as winter temperatures go up and down. New heaters and duct work will help to keep curlers more comfortable out on the ice and prevent the ice from thinning in the corners. Registration for the upcoming season will take place Friday, Sept. 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. and all leagues will be represented. This is also when Little Rocks and Juniors can register, as well as the Learn to Curl program. Information about all programs can be obtained that night, as well as membership options for part-year and single day/night curling, with corresponding fees for each option. Registration and payment can also be done online at the club website, https://renfrewcurling.ca. One of the new leagues being offered this year will be the Wednesday night doubles, which uses a new and exciting format where a team is composed of two people and each team only throws five rocks per end, resulting in a fast-paced game of about an hour; this proved immensely popular at the last Olympics and resulted in Canada's only curling gold medal. Marg Dawson also reminds curlers that the popular Monday night fixed league will be capped at 16 teams, so if you want a spot for sure let her know as soon as possible. Laurie Millar is offering paint night part two, which will be a sign night this time around and offers painters more options as to what sign they wish to paint. Contact her as soon as possible at 613-432-9050, as this event will be held Thursday, Sept. 27 and the event was very popular last time.

3+1 bed/1.5 bath country home with lovely backyard, 2 car garage, and bright kitchen with view of private front yard. Located just outside the edge of Arnprior in Sandy Beach; short walk to the Ottawa River. Plenty of walking trails just outside the back gate.
As well as starting a whole new year back to the Northcote public school, September was a big month at the Lutheran Church too. There would have been no Sunday school over the summer months. Every parent of every child who was a member of the church was expected to give regular instructions in the holy word instead. Mother did the best she could with our nightly prayers, but with the summer months the busiest on the farm in the entire year, there was little time to give us lessons from the Bible. That isn't to say we weren't constantly reminded of the Ten Commandments and all they meant. Often, during the summer, the congregation was more sparse than usual, but once we had turned the corner from August to September, the pews were full, and the few people who made up the choir were back in their places on straight-backed chairs at the front of the church. We were all back to Sunday school in the little room at the back, shut off from the congregation by a thin door which did little to shut out the booming voice of the minister. Of course, that meant too, whoever was teaching Sunday school had to keep her or his voice low so as not to interfere with what was going on out front. I loved Sunday school almost as much as I loved going to the Northcote school during the week. Especially if the teacher that Sunday (we often had a different teacher every week or so) would read us a story from a book and not ask many questions! She would read from a little paper booklet of just a couple of pages, and there was always a coloured picture on the front referring to the story inside. We were allowed, afterwards, to take the paper home, which delighted me beyond words! Once my brothers were over the junior grades at the Northcote Side School, they were excused from Sunday school, and had to sit through the service with the congregation. Of course, this didn't
please my brothers one bit. Emerson said it was all he could do to keep his eyes open and stop his head from falling down on his chest when the minister gave his sermon, which could go on for an hour or more, depending on how heated up he was on the evils of the day. Emerson said he would much rather be in the back of the church in the Sunday school. But of course, his almost six-foot frame was beyond sitting in the little chairs we used, and so with Audrey, Everett and Earl, he had to sit with Mother and Father. That first day back at Sunday school, we children were in for a wonderful surprise. The teacher had to time her lesson perfectly, so that as soon as the last hymn was sung, she had to wind up in a hurry. That first day, as soon as the organist thundered out the first chord, our teacher reached behind her and took hold of a brown paper bag which looked like it had come from Briscoe's General Store, and she took out the tiniest little red Bibles I had ever seen. In a low whisper, so as not to be overheard over the final hymn, she said each of our names and she handed out to us our very own little Bible. In ink, inside, she had carefully printed our name, and we were told that she expected us to read from it every night before we went to bed. I still hadn't learned to read well, and so that chore fell to my sister, Audrey. Every night, Audrey who was high on religion at that time in her life, dutifully read a couple pages from my little red Bible. And then I would tuck it under my pillow, confident it would see me through until morning. My brother Emerson, when he saw what I had been given and who loved a free handout, told Mother he wouldn't mind going to Sunday school the next week, and he was prepared to either stand through the whole service, or sit on the floor. John Carter/Metroland Katie Stewart was a winner in senior showmanship at the Ottawa Valley Belgian Horse Association show during the Renfrew Fair. Katie and sister Hayley, who entered a miniature horse event at the fair, are members of the family hosting the Renfrew County Plowing Match Saturday, Sept. 15 on their farm at 1975 Barr Line in Admaston/Bromley.
STEWARTS TO HOST PLOWING MATCH AT BARR LINE FARM JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com The girls from the Stewart Farm of Admaston/Bromley were busy showing off horses and pigs at the Renfrew Fair. Next weekend they'll even be busier as the family hosts the Renfrew County Plowing Match at its farm at 1975 Barr Line between Douglas and Cobden. The Stewarts are welcoming the public on Saturday, Sept. 15 to the annual one-day competition and celebration of rural and agricultural life. The event is organized by the Renfrew County Plowmen's Association, which has publicly applauded the Stewarts - Brent and Paula and children Katie, Hayley and Jamie; Scott and Elizabeth and children Morgan and Lily; and Irene - for being the hosts as well as for their many years of volunteer contributions. The family-friendly show will have an "old country-fair" feel, with demonstrations, displays, children's activities, vendors, crafts, music and food from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The grand opening is set for 10 a.m. Main stage entertainment will include the Renfrew Highland Pipes and Drums at 10 a.m. and First Street Band at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The always popular Tractor Square Dance is back at 10:30 a.m. and new this year is the Kubota Excavator Rodeo. There will be an antique tractor parade at 1 p.m. Among the displays will be Andy Laird's train sets, Tom Stephenson's ropemaking, Ted Richardson's apple press and a threshing mill.
