John Graham, senior executive and expert on governance within the Indigenous context, will speak on the topic of Canada's First Nations: Options for closing the wellbeing gap with the rest of Canada at Neat Coffee Shop on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 2 p.m. The event is part of the Need to Know speaker series. "I would think that a lot of people are wondering what is going on in terms of Canada's relations with First Nation communities," says Graham. "In spite of what appears to be large sums of money being expended, there remains frustration on all sides and little progress on the major issues. In short, what are the principal reasons for a continuing socio-economic gap between these communities and the rest of Canada and what is the pathway to better outcomes? This is a unique opportunity to get a better understanding of the most important social policy facing Canada today and in the future." ARNPRIOR AREA MAN FACES ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGE MCNAB/BRAESIDE MAN CHARGED JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Many Arnprior residents were shocked to learn that the man charged Sept. 14 with the attempted murder of a local woman was well-known for volunteer work in the community. OPP report William 'Bill' Kirby, 72, faces four serious Criminal Code charges after a woman was found in the bush with 'critical injuries' on Thursday, Sept. 13. She had gone missing in Arnprior before being found along Gunsmith Road in a remote area of McNab/Braeside. Not only was Kirby familiar in town through his own business and 30 years working with Bell, he played prominent roles in several volunteer organizations including Arnprior Community Policing (later the now defunct Arnprior Community Safety Partnership). Kirby was arrested about 2:30 p.m. when paramedics and OPP found him along with the injured
woman in the bush off of Robertson Line, which runs off of White Lake Road. They were responding to a call to the area. The woman was rushed to Ottawa Hospital. Unconfirmed reports indicated she had been stabbed. After Kirby was arrested he was also taken by ambulance to hospital for a medical condition and minor injuries, report police. The victim was kept in hospital until the weekend, when she was judged recovered enough to return home. Kirby had been released from hospital earlier as he appeared in court Friday to be formally charged. He was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, kidnapping and criminal harassment. He was remanded into custody and scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke on Wednesday, Sept. 19 for a bail hearing. OPP would not comment on the relationship between Kirby and the victim. However, acquain-
tances said that he and his partner of 20-plus years had recently separated. In an email message to the newspaper, a family member, who said he spent part of his childhood in the Gunsmith Road area, wrote that he hoped the victim "is OK" and "prayers go out to her and her family." Gunsmith Road is barely better than a dirt trail that runs off Hidden River Road near the Madawaska River between Arnprior and White Lake. Kirby is said to have property in the area and had built a house there many years ago. While a member of various Arnprior organizations, Kirby is officially listed as a Mississippi Mills resident, living on the Madawaska River between Arnprior and Pakenham. The Renfrew County Crime Unit is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Forensic Identification Services Unit. Anyone with information that might be helpful to the investigation should

call the Renfrew or Arnprior OPP detachment offices. An Arnprior ChronicleGuide story about Kirby in October 2011 reported he was a founding member of the Arnprior Civitan Club before joining the Optimists and later the Arnprior Lions Club of which he is still listed as a member. The story notes that his work with Community Policing led to the introduction of the Pumpkin Patrol on Halloween to ensure safety for young trick-ortreaters. He was active in the organization up until this spring when it helped a local student raise money for an Arctic expedition. However, the group recently wrapped up its activities and has ceased to exist. The 2011 story was centred around Kirby's (Arnprior's 'oldest referee') retirement after 27 years of officiating at hockey games at the Nick Smith Centre, where he was "somewhat of an institution." He also coached hockey and was an umpire in the summer.
WITH HUMAN TRAFFICKING ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE Renfrew OPP report they have charged a McNab/ Braeside man with sexual assault, human trafficking and drug trafficking after two 17year-old female victims came forward with complaints to police. Police disclose in a news release that the OPP investigation began in early September when the victims reported the details to police. The victims were allegedly supplied with drugs, sexually assaulted, assaulted and one of them reported being sold for sexual purposes to adult men in Ottawa. At the conclusion of the investigation, the accused was arrested. A quantity of suspected cocaine was seized at the time of the arrest. Marcus Nicholson, 29, of McNab/Braeside, is charged with three counts each of sexual exploitation and sexual assault, two counts of assault and one count of each of the following: trafficking in
schedule 1 drug - cocaine, possession of schedule 1 drug - cocaine, trafficking in persons under 18, living off the avails of sexual services of a person under 18, and making arrangements to commit a sexual offence against a person under 18 years of age. Nicholson was held in custody for a bail hearing on Sept. 14. Detective Const. Philip Holmes of the Renfrew County Crime Unit led the investigation, with assistance from the Community Street Crime Unit and the Anti-Human Trafficking Investigation and Coordination Team. If you or someone you know is being exploited, assaulted or trafficked, there are several organizations that can help. If urgent assistance is needed, call 9-1-1. HORTON CANDIDATE TOUTS MUNICIPAL EXPERIENCE JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Tom Webster is offering his experience gained as director of operations of a rural township and chief building official of Renfrew to his home municipality of Horton. The Pinnacle Road resident said his familiarity with how councils operate would serve him in good stead if he is elected Horton councillor Oct. 22. Webster, who is married with two boys attending St. Joseph's High School, grew up in Milton, Ont., before moving to the Township of Schreiber to "get out of the rat race." An industrial millwright who also dealt with water and sewer systems, he worked his way up to director of operations at the rural municipality perched on Lake Superior east of Thunder Bay. His job encompassed many areas that are key to municipal functions such as
Tom Webster. public works, roads, water, sewer, arena and cemetery. Experience in those areas, plus having to produce budgets and report regularly to council and its committees, will enable him to contribute right away around the council table, he said. "I know how councils operate and how they make decisions." He said he has learned to answer ratepayers' concerns and questions "as quickly as possible." And "if you don't know something, find out," he added. "It's a matter of respect. They (residents) are paying the taxes. They deserve answers."
He has continued to build on his knowledge of municipal matters, as he was appointed Renfrew's chief building official in 2013. Prior to moving to Horton in 2013, the Webster family regularly vacationed here for 25-plus years. "So I'm very familiar with the area," he said. Webster said his impression of Horton is that it has an aging population and many dedicated volunteers. He has several ideas on how the township can best serve seniors and ensure the volunteers feel appreciated. He said a township can provide various bylaws, regulations and guidelines to encourage seniors to stay in their homes longer. "We need to keep our aging population in Horton," he said, adding that he suspects most of the 20 per cent of Horton residents over 65 would rather not move to town if they could more easily access health and other services. "We need to keep them where they are comfortable
and happy." As for the volunteers, "for a small township, it is important to keep volunteers engaged ... their enthusiasm up," he said. Councillors, staff and volunteers need to feel they are part of a "team effort" working for the "betterment of the municipality," he added. Horton is "very fortunate" it already has a high level of volunteerism. "The key is to retain it," he said, noting one of the ways to get more youth to follow in the footsteps of their elders. Webster said Horton's rural nature should be protected and he said he wants to keep his eye on possible nuclear waste leaching into the Ottawa River from a disposal facility proposed for Chalk River. Webster is facing Glen Campbell, Peter Tippins, Ian Moodie, Jeff Taylor, Lane Cleroux and Doug Humphries for four Horton councillor seats in the Oct. 22 election.

MAKE ALL-CANDIDATES FORUMS MEANINGFUL Too often all-candidates meetings are poorly attended with only hard-core supporters showing up to cheer on their favourites. That's unfortunate, for candidates forums can be a valuable tool in ensuring voters make informed choices. That's especially true in municipal elections when, unlike federal and provincial votes, the electorate gets to evaluate the candidates without party politics and leader popularity muddying the waters. Most voters have at least a passing knowledge of party platforms and their leaders' abilities. However, municipal hopefuls, especially newcomers, can be a mystery to many ratepayers. When there are several newcomers in the race, as is the case this year in most area municipalities, it's particularly important to give the electorate a chance to scrutinize them in action on a public stage with their peers. If voters are to choose council members who really reflect their priorities and values, they need to hear firsthand as candidates elucidate their thoughts and views. A discerning voter can learn a great deal from seeing how candidates handle themselves under pressure. That's why debates should not be dominated by speeches. While they can be enlightening, they all too often tend to be full of platitudes and self-evident truths. The audience can better evaluate the candidates through unscripted questions from the audience. Conversely, the public's questions are instructive for candidates in understanding what issues are foremost in the minds of their constituents. However, to make the question period the most important element in a candidate forum as it should be, everyone in the audience should feel comfortable in participating. For an all-candidates forum to be effective, it should be inclusive and welcoming, walking the line between orderly and passionate. It's not easy. Everyone has a role, especially the moderator and his or her support workers. Usually there are far more questions posed than there is time for them to be answered, especially if there are a large number of candidates on stage. So what questions are chosen and how long candidates are given to answer them are important. The moderator and crew need to be knowledgeable enough about the community to ensure relevant questions are asked and understood properly, and quick-witted enough to put a stop to duplications and prevent loudmouths from dominating proceedings. They should be strict enough to keep candidates on topic and time, yet flexible enough to allow them to digress if it helps the audience understand the response and to rebut their opponents if warranted. After all, voters want to know where candidates differ, not so much on what they agree. The audience members can help by asking succinct questions that draw out where the candidates stand on issues of importance to the community. Wandering diatribes, long preambles and unsubstantiated accusations have no part in questions. Time is of the essence at these sessions. In municipalities where the number of candidates reaches double figures, it makes sense to hold two forums, one for mayor and deputy mayor and another for councillors to give everyone time to speak their piece. If voters are to leave the forum armed with enough insight to make informed choices, they need to ask questions and hear answers that allow them to determine which candidates have the right stuff to guide their municipalities for the next four years.

WHO WE ARE LETTERS & COMMENTARY TIME TO ASK QUESTIONS AS MUNICIPAL ELECTION APPROACHES To the editor: As the municipal election approaches it is time to find out what vision the candidates have for Renfrew. What are their priorities? Personally, I think every spare nickel that can be found in the budget should be spent on repairing our failing infrastructure. The present council seems to be doing better on this file than the previous one but much more needs to be done. The problem, as I see it, is that there are many projects competing for a slice of the municipal budget pie so it is important that the mayor and council stay focused on what is achievable and best for the community as a whole. In 2014 several councillors were replaced, a good move by the people of Renfrew. Now a former councillor is running to
get his seat back. This gentleman was a supporter of the former mayor's fantasy pool projects, voting to include a plebiscite on the election ballot, that if approved, would have allowed council to raise taxes by 10 per cent to pay for a pool. Meanwhile the streets crumbled and costs ballooned (remember the $860,000 fire truck?). It is time to ask questions
STAN RUSSELL RENFREW
READER EXPRESSES CONCERNS ABOUT ELECTION PROCESS To the editor: I would just like to question the upcoming election in Horton Township.
Apparently there are only mail-in paper ballots and no advance dates for paper voting. In case Canada Post goes ahead with a strike and the letters are sent out in late September, then they will only have to be delivered to the township office personally ahead of election day. Voting becomes confusing, as in Whitewater Region, paper ballot voting will only be available at advance polls on Oct. 13, 17, 18 and 20 at different locations — so voting on election day is only electronically done, no paper ballots. What happens to the elderly people and those in nursing homes? Also, everyone does not have internet. Times have changed and not for the best.

Spring is usually thought of as being the season for romance. After the passing of the vernal equinox, hormones start running wild in the males of many species. By mid-May songbirds arrive back from their southern exodus dressed in their finest garb and fill the air with vocal advertisements of desire. Long before their arrival, red foxes and eastern coyotes had delivered their nuptial vows. But some animals do not feel the urge to reproduce until summer is waning. Praying mantids are now in the mating mood. After the females mate, they deposit their eggs inside a foam-like sheath that protects them through the winter. Walking sticks also mate around this time, their seed-like eggs picked up by ants that transport them underground where they harvest an edible cap off their end,
leaving the eggs to hatch in a refuse chamber. Recently I came across two very different animals that were mating or at least thinking about it. I encountered the first while canoeing in Algonquin's Costello Creek. Extensive peatlands border this lovely, meandering waterway and as I paddled up it, mist danced across the water. As soon as the sun broke through and brightened up the floating edges, tiny white wings began to vibrate atop the plants. Soon there were flickering flashes of wings catching the light everywhere. Then small white moths began to flutter up only to flutter back down, their wings never ceasing to move. Eventually, thousands of moths rose up from the plants, their white forms visible as far as the eye could see. It was a magical sight, one that I had not witnessed before. The moths were chain-dotted geometers, a common species that flies in daytime at summer's end. I soon learned why they were active. Pairs began forming with mating immediately following. Whenever a strong breeze began to blow, the moths settled back down into the plants. As soon as it grew calm, they flew back up into the air. The males had huge antennae for detecting the female's
pheromones (airborne love potions) and so likely landed when the wind began interfering with their detection systems. The next morning I walked along the old railbed that forms the northern part of the Mizzy Lake Trail. I arrived before dawn and with a light frost on the ground and mist filling the air I decided to try calling bull Moose. After a few minutes of making female love calls, I heard a stick break across a small pond. Minutes later I heard a guttural moan. Finally, a young bull wandered out of the woods. It thrashed its tiny antlers against the plants in a vain effort to impress the caller. Even though the rut (the moose mating season) was still a week away, the bull was responsive. I was surprised to see that all of its velvet (the thick skin that nourishes growing antlers) was gone. Usually big bulls lose their velvet first, smaller bulls later. With that loss comes an increase in testosterone and responsiveness to the vocal invitations of females. Or in my case, to those of a female wannabe! The Nature email is mruntz@start.ca

MUNICIPAL ELECTION
NEWS
UNLEASH GREATER MADAWASKA'S POTENTIAL: MAYORALTY CANDIDATE JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Greater Madawaska has "huge potential" if council and its citizens work together better, says mayoralty candidate Lois Thompson. The editor/owner of the Madawaska Highlander publication is a firsttime candidate running for the top job because she feels she has the knowledge, skills and energy to unlock the township's potential. Council is achieving some good things, but slowly, said the Matawatchan resident. "They need to go to the next level." "I can see how things can be done better," she said, noting she is promoting progress with the slogan "up and up - on the up and up." There are too many "dark spots" regarding disclosure of information now, she said. Lois and Mark Thompson run Reel Impact Communications out of their home overlooking the Madawaska River thanks to high-speed internet coming to the area five years ago. Mark's family were original settlers to the area and the couple have been regularly coming to the area for the past 15 years before becoming full-time residents. Operating the video production company has given Lois experience in both running a business and municipal affairs, as one of Reel Impact's main clients is the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM). She noted the projects she has undertaken for the FCM has given her a front-row seat into "amazing" accomplishments in eco-
nomic development and sustainability by municipal leaders of major cities to tiny hamlets. Thomson said her work with the Highlander has given her insight into all aspects of the township and its neighbours, as well as contacts with area businesses and ratepayer, cottage and community groups. Getting them all to work together is a key to making the township thrive, she said. "I see the huge potential of Greater Madawaska as a unique tourism area," she said, adding that its wilderness beauty and proximity to the large populations of Ottawa and Toronto is a real plus. "This area is going to grow, but we need smart growth," she said. "As we go forward, we need to protect the small-town feel." New cottages and resorts are welcome, but "they should blend in," Thomson added. "We don't want gated communities ... we don't want to become a suburb of Arnprior in 50 or 60 years." To ensure the township grows properly, council needs to encourage "true community involvement," she said. Thomson charged that the current council has been "abysmal" in that area. "They seem to be afraid of complaints, she said. "They should consider it a gift ... it's not a complaint but an opportunity. If you don't know about a problem, you can't fix it." She suggests council spread its meetings occasionally to Griffith and Dacre, reinstate a public question-and-

Council needs to determine the township's assets and what its businesses and tourism operators need so it can market Greater Madawaska as "one big beautiful vacation playground," she said. Thomson said council should have a 50-year vision on which to base decisions that affect the municipality over the next five to 10 years. She said council should be more proactive in seeking grants, noting she was able to find a winterization grant as president of the Matawatchan Hall board. Thomson said she will continue to operate the Highlander "because it's so important to the area." There is no conflict because it doesn't cover municipal politics, she said. It's one of the few things that "really connects neighbours," she explained, noting it reaches into four counties.
Motorists using Munroe Avenue to access Central Public School in Renfrew and homes in the area will soon have to modify their travel plans. Munroe will be blocked off in the next week or two for probably just over a month as a collapsed culvert causing "severe drainage problems" near the school needs to be replaced. Back in spring when the problem was noticed, the town was hopeful the emergency work could be completed before school began in September. However, the financing and planning proved tricky, as gas, water and sewer lines all cross at the site. It's been a "complex" project to deal with, Renfrew council was told Sept. 11 when it finally approved the work, which will entail excavation right across the road. Council approved the expenditure of $319,795 to have Bonnechere Excavat-
ing Inc. (BEI) do the work as an addition to Phase 2 of the Plaunt Street project. As well as replacing the culvert, the water line will be upgraded to a pipe with a longer lifespan. With engineering added in, the full cost of the work is $330,739, almost $31,000 over the original estimate. In response to a question by Coun. Kate Windle, development and works director Mike Asselin assured council that traffic arrangements and emergency response will be coordinated with Central school. The project can't be delayed until a more convenient time, as it "must be completed as soon as possible to restore the drainage outlet," council was told. Water is backing up in the ravine between Legion Park and Jennet Street and entering into a new storm system running up Munroe Avenue. The pipe has been 80 per cent blocked by large boulders under the centre of the road.

WHAT'S GOING ON HERE? VIMY BOULEVARD BETWEEN LISGAR AND HAIG
John Carter/Metroland
While the reconstruction of Raglan Street through the downtown is causing the biggest traffic disruption in Renfrew, motorists will also have to adapt to work on several side streets this fall. Reconstruction of Vimy Boulevard, repaving of Prince and Carswell streets, and replacing a culvert on Munroe Avenue are all planned for the next couple of months.
JUST THE FACTS: First up is the rehabilitation of Vimy Boulevard, which was closed Sept. 13 for two blocks in both directions, between Lisgar (Highway 132) and Haig avenues, except for local traffic and emergency vehicles. The closure, which is expected to last until about Oct. 31, necessitates a detour via Dufferin Street and Haig Avenue. Renfrew council awarded the tender for both the Vimy Boulevard and Prince-Carswell projects to B.R. Fulton Construction for $820,416 ($401,232 for Vimy; $336,577 for Prince-Carswell, plus HST). There were
three tenders, with Fulton being the low bidder and BEI, which is doing the downtown work, the highest. The Vimy project will include road, sidewalk, curb, drainage and landscaping improvements. Fulton is also expected to start soon on the Prince and Carswell "shave and pave" project, to get it done before the snow flies. The town has completed preliminary engineering on both routes as well as Arnprior and Ross streets. Council approved a development and works committee recommendation to pave Prince from Carswell to Bonnechere streets, and Carswell from Prince to Renfrew avenues this fall.

LIVE BURN DEMONSTRATION IN CALABOGIE WILL HIGHLIGHT EFFECTIVENESS OF SPRINKLERS The Greater Madawaska Fire Department was awarded a $1,000 stipend from the national non-profit, Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition, to increase its home fire sprinkler education locally by conducting a live, side-by-side fire and sprinkler burn demonstration. The funds will help the de-
partment demonstrate to officials and the public how effective sprinkler systems can be in fighting fires. "We are honoured to have been selected for this generous stipend," says Fire Chief Darryl Wagner, of the Greater Madawaska Fire Department. "Using the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition's educa-

tional materials, we will move forward with this important public education demonstration, which illustrates the danger of home fires, especially in today's lightweight construction homes, and, more importantly, the lifesaving benefits of home fire sprinklers." The live demonstration
will include two similarly furnished rooms - one protected with fire sprinklers and the other without fire sprinklers. People who attend the demonstration will be able to experience firsthand how quickly a fire can become deadly, and the quick response and effectiveness of a fire sprinkler system in controlling or ex-
tinguishing a fire. The demonstration is scheduled for Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. and is being run in conjunction with The Renfrew County Fire Chiefs' Association. The event will take place at the Calabogie Community Hall, located at 574 Mill St. in Calabogie. The live demo will be held

TAKE BACK THE NIGHT IN EGANVILLE TO INCLUDE 'COUNTDOWN' DECLARATION SEXUAL ASSAULT MONUMENTS TO BE EXPANDED AROUND PROVINCE JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com The annual Renfrew County Take Back the Night march has a special twist this year. After the march in Eganville on Tuesday, Sept. 25, participants are invited to return to Centennial Park to officially launch an initiative to create four new monuments across Ontario next year to honour survivors of sexual violence. The project is an extension of the Countdown Public Art Legacy Project that saw one large permanent public art monument and three "sister" memorials erected in Renfrew County after three Valley women were murdered in September 2015. Take Back the Night marchers are asked to con-
gregate in Eganville's Centennial Park at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 25 for the march through the village starting at 7:15 p.m. The Countdown Public Art Legacy Project announcement with special guest speakers and performing artists is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. An after-party will be held at the Bonnechere Union Public Library at 8:15 p.m. The Countdown Public Art Project is a communitywide Renfrew County initiative begun in 2016 by the Women's Sexual Assault Centre of Renfrew County, Red Dress Productions and Ottawa Valley Creative Arts Open Studio. They joined with hundreds of community members, artists and sexual violence professionals to realize to create the first permanent monument in Canada aimed at increasing awareness of the problem of sexual assault and recognizing survivors. A pebble mosaic public monument was erected in Centennial Park along with
three smaller sister monuments at the Women's Sexual Assault Centre in Pembroke, Killaloe's Station Park and Pikwakanagan First Nation. Since the unveilings in October 2016, people have gathered at the monuments for Take Back the Night events and less formal gatherings. So organizers felt it fitting to unveil the expansion of the Countdown Public Art Legacy Project at this year's Take Back the Night march. At the heart of the project is the hope the process of creating the monuments and the "amplification" of the initiative will "continue to play a generative role in inviting more people into the conversation to become change-makers in their own communities by joining the countdown to end sexual violence." "My hope is for the project to spread all over other communities - spread to other communities in the county and beyond," said one Countdown contributor.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, things that may have confounded you in the past will be much clearer this week. Someone comes into your life and will explain what you need to know.
LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Let supervisors know just how much you have been contributing at work and how it has been beneficial to their bottom line. This can be the doorway to a pay increase, Leo.
SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 You may have taken on too much, Sagittarius, and now you think you can’t get it all accomplished. It may take a few long nights, but your initial goal is still attainable.
TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Conversations with friends the next few days prove to be a great moodlifter, Taurus. Things in your life will continue in a positive direction for some time afterwards.
VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, do not feel like you have to change much about yourself to fit the mold others have created. It is okay to be unique and be proud of your differences.
CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 It is okay to seek perfection, Capricorn, but not when others are helping out. Be grateful of all they have to offer, even if you may need to fix something along the way.
GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, even though work life and home life are separate, there are some instances when they might overlap. Use this time wisely to build deep relationships.
LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 You are naturally trusting of others, Libra. But keep a small amount of skepticism going so that no one takes advantage of you. Once you vet friends, keep them close.
CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 You have a trustworthy circle of friends, Cancer. If the going gets a little tricky this week, call upon the people who just can’t wait to support you.
SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Spending too much time worrying about what others are doing or what they think of you is not productive, Scorpio. Focus on what makes you happy and don’t worry about others.
AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, you must follow through when you say you are going to do something this week. If not, others may associate you with empty promises, and that reputation is not easily remedied.

FAMILY RAFFLES WEEK AT FLORIDA VACATION HOME IN SUPPORT OF HOSPICE TICKETS AVAILABLE NOW FOR JIM PRESLEY MEMORIAL VACATION RAFFLE SHERRY HAAIMA sherr y.haaima@metroland.com A local family impressed with the services at Hospice Renfrew has come up with a generous way to support the six-bed palliative care home. The Jim Presley Memorial Vacation Raffle was launched earlier this month, offering a spectacular first-place prize: seven nights at the family's vacation villa in Florida and a $500 travel voucher. Second prize is $1,000 cash. All proceeds will go to Hospice Renfrew. "Dad became a resident of Hospice Renfrew in late summer 2014. During an emotional and physically demanding transition from living with a terminal illness to end-of-life care, Hospice Renfrew's staff and volunteers created a caring, compassionate environment, not only for our dad but to our entire family and friends," said Lisa Presley, Jim's youngest daughter. "I've lived my adult life away from the Valley and have since lost the small community connection, until I entered hospice."
JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com
Jennifer Lafrance/Submitted In early September, the Presley family launched the Jim Presley Memorial Vacation Raffle in support of Hospice Renfrew. First-place prize is a seven-night stay at the family's vacation villa in Florida and a $500 travel voucher. Second prize is $1,000 cash. Clockwise from back left are Jennifer Lafrance, Elaine Presley, Tracy Presley, Lisa Sedore and hospice executive director Maureen Sullivan-Bentz. volunteers," said Tracy. "Not only did they care for my father and keep him comfortable, they truly made it possible for him to pass with the utmost dignity. I witnessed many, many acts of pure, genuine kindness and caring from the staff and volunteers over the weeks my father was there." Hospice staff and volunteers treated her dad as if he were their own, she said. "My appreciation for all that they are and all that they do will be remembered always!" she said.
The villa is located in Orlando and the draw will be made Dec. 31. Blackout dates for the winning ticket Dec. 23-30, 2019. Tickets, $20 each, are available from Tracy (613-899-4946) and Jennifer (613-324-5202); in Renfrew at: Hospice Renfrew, J & J's Chocolate Sensations, the Renfrew Mercury/Metroland office and at the Shane McNulty Country Night for Hospice at the RCAF Wing Sept. 29; and in Arnprior at: RONA, Arnprior Tooth Doctor, Carlson Wagonlit and Peter's Computer Solutions.
Renfrew's Farmers Market will have an expanded scope this Saturday, Sept. 22. Market vendors will be moving over to Ma-Te-Way Park to take part in the third of six Renfrew County Taste of the Valley events. The celebration of local foods and products will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Once strictly a Valley-produced food event, the focus has expanded in recent years to also include arts, craft, culture and other items made in the Upper Ottawa Valley. Taste of Valley kicked off July 29 at the Herbfest at Waba Cottage Museum and Gardens in White Lake, with the second event Aug. 17 at Barry's Bay. The final three will be held in Deep River Sept. 29, downtown Arnprior Sept. 30 and at the Cobden Fairgrounds Oct. 13. Renfrew County's Economic Development Services began events 11 years ago. As Taste of the Valley has grown, so have its community partnerships. In Renfrew, the town is running this year's event, which was held at the Renfrew Fairgrounds in the past. However, to ensure consistency moving forward, the county is taking on a more proactive role by maintaining a central vendor database to keep track of new local food producers as they start up in business. Also, it will manage the Taste of the Valley website on behalf of all sites.

Jim's wife Elaine said Hospice Renfrew will forever hold a special place in the hearts of Presley family members. "The kindness to Jim and our family was overwhelming at this sad and extremely difficult time. And we believe he felt that kindness almost immediately also," she said. "As with many other situations in life, one cannot or does not appreciate such caring until you are faced personally with it." Jim's daughter Jennifer said the end-of-life care her father received, as well as the support for her family, was extraordinary. "Their kind and gentle care, while providing empathy and compassion, brought me great comfort and peace - the endless supply of homemade cookies helped, too," she said. "This fundraising event does my heart good! It not only gives me the opportunity to bring much-needed awareness of Hospice Renfrew, it is a true memorial tribute to my dad, who was never so happy as he was whenever he was at or could share conversation about Sunshine Villa Orlando - it truly was his happy place." Jim's daughter Tracy praised the staff, volunteers and facility. "I expected it to be a place of doom and gloom, after all, hospice is end-of-life care. Instead what I found it to be was a beautiful, most peaceful place made possible by the amazing staff and

The hole-in-ones continue to come fast and furious here at Dragonfly Golf Links. Congratulations to Guy Poulin from Orleans for his great shot on our 18th hole with his six iron! We are honoured that Guy drove over an hour and a half to play our course, and we are so happy that he was rewarded with a wonderful and special memory here at Dragonfly. Results from our Friday Stroke Play League on Sept. 7 are as follows: In first place for the second week in a row was Therese Williams. Second place went to Joanne Dumouchel and third went to Donna Falcon. Well done ladies! There was no "secret hole" winner to report. On Sept. 8 Dragonfly Golf Links played host to the annual grudge match between Whitetail Golf Club, the Oaks of Cobden Golf Club, and Dragonfly. This event is called the "Valley Masters" and is played in a two-day Ryder Cup team match play format. After day one at Dragonfly, the home team had a sizeable lead over the other clubs. Day two was a different story since Whitetail were the hosts and they took advantage of familiarity with their course. The final results were not determined until the
last golfers completed play on the final hole. I am thrilled to say that Dragonfly Golf Links came out on top! The 2018 Valley Masters are Justin Riopelle, Michel Levesque, Mike McDonald, Richard Labrie, Matt Snyder, Glenn Wilson, Jared Riopelle, Chad Thompson, Ken Koops, Phil Vincent, Blair MacKenzie, Mike Riopelle, Jesse Riopelle, Emma White, Donna Falcon and Sandra Fleury (missing from the photo are Connor Ross, Rob Perry and yours truly, Bill Rainboth). Men's League wrapped up its final week of play before our year end events on the 15th and 22nd of September. First place winners on Monday were the X-Men, and Renfrew Pizzaria took runner-up. Closest to the pin winners were Joey Dufour and Jason English. Tuesday nights have enjoyed the best weather out of all our leagues this past year, and this past Tuesday was no different. Winning A flight were TF Custom Signs, and the B flight winners were from Scapa Tape. Closest to the pin winners were Mike McDonald and Mat Forrest. Wednesday nights' winners from A flight were the Mountain Men, and the B winners were the Skunk Alley Boys. Craig Briscoe was "dialed in" as he was closest to the pin on both No. 5 and No. 7.
What a great turnout we had today for our second annual Latraverse-Sharpe Memorial Tournament. In our inaugural tournament, we had 24 ladies; this year, 40 ladies played. We started the day with an early breakfast, followed by a "cool" (+3) start to the golf game. Fortunately, it turned out to be a great day to golf. Congratulations to the Sharpe team members on winning for the second year in a row. I'm already looking forward to next year's tournament. I'm confident 2019 will be the year that the Latraverse team dethrones the Sharpe team! Monday was the Pro-Lady; with the team of Mary Ann Abrams, Colleen Sheehan, Faith Mau, and our pro Greg representing the Renfrew Golf Club at Rivermead; they shot 7 under par. Mary Anne Abrams and Vi Rossy played their match Tuesday, with Vi coming out on top. We had 22 ladies play Ladies

Like all the other cookies Mr. Briscoe sold, they were stored in tilted boxes in a row right down the centre of the store, but the cookies shaped like maple leafs were in the first box. Others were wafer thin, some were just round like biscuits, and some were chocolate with white icing. But I could never smell any of the other cookies..only the maples. I used to think it was good planning on Mr. Briscoe's part to put the maple cookies near the front door. The wonderful smell helped deaden the reeking stench of coal oil in containers at the back of the store...right beside the little barrel of molasses. There were no covers on the cookie boxes, but when the height of the summer assured you of a good crop of houseflies, in an attempt to keep them away from the cookies, long pieces of wrapping paper were laid over the entire row of cookie boxes. But when you lifted the paper, there were always flies underneath, which didn't seem to affect the sales one bit. I didn't have much use for the thin wafers, which, however, were
THiS weeK’S feaTUre
Father's favourite. When a meal was over, he liked to pick up a wafer and soften it in his tea. Mother thought it was a disgusting habit, but it was just one more thing she had to get used when she moved to the farm at Northcote. Of course, the maple cookies and the wafers were luxuries we didn't often enjoy. Father often had to go to the store in the middle of the day...he might need nails, oil, or gas, and if that happened when I wasn't at the Northcote School, I was always allowed to go with him, which was a special thrill for me. Any time I could spend alone with Father, he gave me great job. He wasn't a talker, but he had plenty of facial expressions and hand motions I could read like a book. Another reason I liked to go to the store with Father was that he alway bought a few cookies for me. Of course, he never had any money in his pocket, so he would just tell Mr. Briscoe to put them on our bill. Mother, at the end of the month, after selling her wares in Renfrew, would go into the store at Northcote and settle up with Mr. Briscoe. Neither Mother nor Father ever laid out cash when they bought supplies, which I used to think was just like getting something for nothing. So Father would first do his business with Mr. Briscoe. And then he would go over to the counter and take a small paper bag
which was neatly piled in order of size with all the other bags. He always opened it with his thumb, and then put the bag to his lips and give it a hefty blow, and it would open up all the way immediately. He would nod in my direction, and we would head over to the row of cookie boxes. He knew without asking what kind of cookie I would like. And with his hand that before had come in contact with the cows, the horses, the barn equipment, and the buggy, he would reach into each tilted box of the ones we wanted, and bring out a full fist of cookies! I knew Mother would wonder, if she were there, why Mr. Briscoe would bother covering the cookies with paper in the first place, when any farmer, without the benefit of a good hand wash, would saunter over to the boxes and grab a couple of handsful of their favourite, serving themselves. But we must have been a healthy lot, because never, all the time Father helped himself to the Maple Leaf and wafer cookies, did I ever hear of a soul in Northcote dying from dirty cookie disease. COADY, Sean Douglas In loving memory of our dear son, who tragically was taken too soon, September 16, 2006. Every day our hearts are filled with sorrow, Wondering how we will make it through tomorrow. Our time with you was precious, And the memories we have are too. The love we share together keeps us close to you. Maybe we cannot touch your hand or see your smiling face, Maybe we cannot hear your voice or feel your warm embrace, But, there is something we will always have, Tucked safely in our hearts, Our love for you… your love for us… will never let us part. “Those we love stay with us always, locked in our hearts as long as our life remains.” Love, Mom and Dad
