More than just our companions at home or part of the ecosystem, animals are huge inspirations for all manner of home décor too! From accessories to furniture, animals have been a constant source of beauty, strength and power. Even the fashion catwalk takes its cue from wildlife, lending a fierce silhouette to many a designer like Kristian Aadnevik or model strut. With so much admiration for the animals, how could we miss out? In this issue, we explore ways to keep your home petfriendly (p8) and pick out safari-inspired furnishings (p24). There are also tips on how to maintain great air quality at home (p27) plus an exclusive showcase on ibride (p40), a French design house wellknown for their animal-inspired creations. In other words, we're going all out to celebrate the unbridled beauty of animals—both wild and domesticated—in your home. Oh, and before I forget. To celebrate our 2nd anniversary, we're preparing some sweet goodies just for you so do stay tuned to our Facebook fan page! Editor,

6 Ways To Keep Your Home Pet-Friendly

“

Keeping a pet at home can be both a joy and a challenge. As most pet owners can attest, animals do get themselves into all kinds of situations that can be hazardous to their wellbeing. So instead of waiting for them to get into trouble, we take a look at 6 simple ways to make our home safer for our animal friends. By Lilian Wu

We love our pets, that much is clear; from their extensive wardrobe to the premium food that we painstakingly scrutinise to make sure that it contains all the nutrients that our fur kids need. Our camera phones become worshippers of their every moment and even when they get up to their naughty tricks, we often endure it somewhat indulgently for 'fur kids will always be fur kids'. But pampering your pets is not the only way to love them, ensuring that your home is pet-friendly will not only decrease the odds of pet injuries (or accidents), it will also give you peace of mind!

Before you go about pet-proofing your home, get down to your pet's level and observe things from their point of view. By doing this, you'll gain a better understanding of what danger zones are lying in wait for your pet—a stray candy wrapper, dangling electrical wires, pills that you accidentally dropped behind the cabinet or small crevices that your pet can easily crawl into.

9

SET UP RESTRICTED ZONES

Does your pet have free run of your house? If you're worried about your pet ransacking the kitchen or ending up in compromising situations while you're not around, then it's time to lay down some ground rules. Restrict your pets to areas where you're sure they won't get into too much trouble. To enforce that rule, install a baby gate in the doorways. This will keep them safely out of places such as the kitchen where you keep your chocolate fix, which is highly toxic to pets such as dogs and cats. Make sure that you enforce the rules consistently and do take your pets for regular exercises so they don't be bored into chewing up your furniture or belongings. Oh, and don't forget about putting window screens if your pet is a jumper.

CULTIVATE PET-FRIENDLY PLANTS

Have you heard the story of how a Valentine bouquet of lilies poisoned three cats? Don't let your beloved pet be the next victim by cultivating pet-friendly plants. Avoid plants like tiger lily, peace lily, lily of the valley, among others. Check with your vet on what kind of plants you can safely put at home without endangering your pet, or visit the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) website to check out their list of toxic and non-toxic plants.

INVEST IN A DURABLE FLOORING

Let's be honest: your pets are going to have accidents on the floor no matter how well-trained they are. To counter the heart pain you're going to experience when you catch your pets peeing or defecating on your very expensive carpet, go for linoleum flooring. Such floors are often water-proof and easy to maintain. Another option that you can look at is the High End Resilient Flooring from Evorich Holdings, which is both water-proof and termite-proof as it's not made from wood so it doesn't attract termites and other wood decaying agents.

10

USE PET-FRIENDLY PAINT ON YOUR WALLS

You might think the walls are not a major concern, but painting them in non-toxic paints is beneficial to your pets' health. Choose a paint that is low in or free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to improve indoor air quality. For example, The Nippon Paint's Odourless Easy Wash series is pet-friendly with a wide range of beautiful colours so you don't necessarily have to resign yourself to boring colours to keep your pets safe. In fact, coloured walls that closely match the colour of your fur kid's coat will help to mask shedding and discolouration better. Paints with a satin finish are ideal as well, because it allows easier clean-ups compared to paints with a flat finish.

INSTALL LOCKS

KEEP ALL DANGLING CORDS OUT OF REACH

Make doubly sure your pets don't get into your stuff by installing latches or child-proof locks on the cabinets. If your dog has a chewing problem, you might want to consider spraying your belongings with pet-safe products in flavours of lemon or bitter apple since most dogs don't like the taste. You can also make your own by mixing 2 cups of apple cider vinegar/lemon juice and 1 cup of white vinegar into a spray bottle. Be consistent about applying the mist to your belongings like the sofa or cushions so that your pooch will eventually get the idea.

Electrical cords can be a rather tempting thing, especially to playful animals. Keep all your electrical cords out of reach and as short as possible so your pets won't be tempted to chew them into oblivion. Better yet, keep your appliances after use so they remain dust-free and less of a temptation for your pets to knock them off the table. If this is not possible, then arrange your furniture such that they provide protection for hanging cords. Block off gaps and crevices where your cat can easily squeeze into or better yet, invest in wireless appliances. Cords can also be dangerous since they can lead to strangulation or situations where your trapped pet may panic and pull objects off the table. In good old tropical Singapore, keeping food coolly fresh is of paramount importance especially when we don't have naturally occurring ice or snow for preservation purposes. This makes the modern refrigerator pretty much one of the greatest inventions before sliced bread. By Lilian Wu

Like the air conditioner, the refrigerator works by removing heat from an enclosed area or from an item. It lowers the temperature through the evaporation of a liquid, which in this case is the refrigerant. It evaporates at an extremely low temperature and creates freezing temperatures within the refrigerator by drawing the energy from its immediate area. What began as the icebox is now an indispensable home appliance that houses our guilty pleasures (ice creams and the like) along with all the leftovers that would have been wasted if we didn't have the means to preserve them. In fact, the refrigerator is sometimes referred to as an icebox in America.

THE ICE WORKER'S SONG: HOW IT ALL BEGAN Back in the good old days, iceboxes were built with hollow walls that were lined with tin or zinc. These walls were then insulated with materials such as seaweed, cork or straw. To cool the storage compartments, a large block of ice would be placed near the top of the box. The ice had to be replenished daily so it was usually bought from the iceman. Melted ice would be disposed via the drip pan under the box or drained through a spigot (faucet) from the catch pan or holding tank in more advanced versions. Since the icebox depended heavily on frozen water, it led to a substantial growth in the ice harvesting industry. Ice was harvested during the winter from ponds, rivers and freshwater lakes. These ice would then be stored in ice houses to prepare for the summer months. Such houses are typically insulated buildings built near natural sources of ice and can also be used to keep perishables or provide a place where ice cream and sorbet desserts could be prepared.

The modern refrigerator that you see today is the result of an extremely long process of refinement and development, but one of more successful models must be the “Monitor-Top” refrigerator by General Electric. It was the first affordable fridge to see widespread usage and was given that very name because the exposed compressor on top of the all-steel cabinet looks like the gun turret on the iron-hulled warship USS Monitor built during the American Civil War. Although it's considered an antique today, many people still use it at home due to its hardy nature but such units use either sulfur dioxide or methyl formate (both toxic gases) as refrigerants. While it can be bought off bidding websites such as Ebay, you cannot recharge the refrigerator legally if it encounters a leak or breakdown. Interesting, huh?

I CHOOSE YOU: HOW TO PICK A SUITABLE REFRIGERATOR Today there are many different types of fridges, but the most common one is the traditional type where the freezer is at the top while the refrigerator is at the bottom. Others have the freezer located below the refrigerator component. Then there are also the side-by-side refrigerators where the freezer is on the left and the refrigerator takes up residence on the right. Getting a new place or thinking of replacing your old refrigerator, but not sure what refrigerator to buy? Then check out the buying tips that we've sussed out for you. REFRIGERATOR Top freezer

PROS

CONS

• Takes up little floor space • Most economical and popular with homeowners • Numerous styles to choose from

• May be difficult to reach for food stored in the back of the freezer

Bottom freezer

• The freezer is at the bottom so it's easier to reach for the frozen food. • Comes with two types of freezer doors— drawer or swing door • Comes with an economical price tag and takes up little floor space

• Fewer styles available in the market

Side-by-side

• Great for narrow kitchens since the doors don't need much clearance • Lots of door storage space • Bigger freezer capacity and easier access • Comes with water and ice dispensers

• The limited size of the freezer section may prevent you from storing food that take up horizontal space e.g. large pizza. • Additional repairs may be required for the water and ice dispensers.

French doors

• Has wide shelves that allow storage of large items such as platters and plenty of door storage space, at a convenient eye-level • Conserves energy as you only need to open 1 door to access the food • Most stylish in the market, some models even come with 2 freezer drawers • Comes with water and ice dispensers

• Usually the most costly • Additional repairs may be required for the water and ice dispensers.

FROZEN ASSETS: THE MONITOR-TOP REFRIGERATOR

16

Eco-D Series RD-6800XS (Mirror): $5,499

TIP #1: Choose a suitable type and size for the household Depending on the size and needs of your family, you may want to consider other styles of refrigerators aside from the traditional one. If you're the type who needs plenty of storage space, then the French Doors fridge may just be your cup of tea! The twin doors open up to reveal a spacious interior, which can easily accommodate those large plates you use to serve your growing family. That or go for the side-by-side refrigerator, since it can give you plenty of storage space for both frozen and fresh food.

17 Hitachi Home Electronics Asia (S) Pte Ltd

The capacity is also highly dependant on whether you cook on a regular basis, but here is a rough guide: NUMBER OF PEOPLE

MINIMUM CAPACITY NEEDED*

TYPE OF REFRIGERATOR

2 people

230 litres

Top or bottom freezer

3 to 4 people

310 to 380 litres

Side-by-side or French doors

5 and more people

450 litres

Side-by-side, French doors or larder refrigerators with a separate freezer

*The capacity also depends on the household's personal shopping frequency. Not enough kitchen space, but have a large family to cook for? Mr. Yoshiyuki Ue, Manager of Business Planning Department from Hitachi Home Electronics Asia (S) Pte Ltd, has this to recommend, “6 door fridges are great choices for large families because they offer around 500 to 800 litres of storage capacity. However, if there is limited space in the kitchen, consider fridges that are smaller in width and higher in height. It's also important to measure your kitchen before making a decision in any major appliance purchase.

18

TIP #2: Extra features Decide if you want extra features such as the water and ice dispensers. These add-ons will need regular maintenance, but the convenience they provide for your family may justify all the cleaning you have to do.

TIP #3: Adjustable shelving Sometimes you just need more space for a particular dish (e.g. a large pot of soup). This is when adjustable shelves will come in really handy because they help you to optimise the available space you have in the fridge.

LG Bentley Door-in-Door (GR-J257WSBN), $4,999

TIP #4: Available space Whether you're renovating your new kitchen or looking to replace an existing fridge, be sure to get the dimensions right before shopping for one. Allocate a few centimetres around the back and sides of the refrigerator for ventilation, and take note of the direction it opens. There are models with reversible doors, too, so you can consider those if it helps with the flow of the kitchen. Deciding on a refrigerator may give you a headache, but choosing a suitable one can affect the work-flow of your kitchen so be sure to choose wisely!

Food For Thought

“

Presentation is most important when it comes to serving your gourmet cuisine. Everything from colour compatibility and shape to the material of your dishes play a major part in presenting your food in the best possible light so it's wise to choose your tableware wisely. Here are a few tips that will help you pick the most suitable dishes for everyday use or that dinner party you've been planning for. By Lilian Wu

Frost Dinner Plate by Corelle from World Kitchen

01

Colour it Good You probably won't notice it, but the colour and shape of dishes used in food presentation does affect a diner's perception. In fact, research has shown that the people tend to think desserts served on white and round plates are sweeter and tastier. So to make your home-cooked food look appetising, consider buying plain white dishes because it's the most versatile. Its colour also won't fade over time and such dishes are relatively inexpensive so designs like the plates in the Frost dinner plate by Corelle from World Kitchen (price upon request) will make great choices. If you have kids, then you might want to look into serving food on colourful plates with more decorative elements. Arranging their food in fun shapes such as a smile or heart will also entice them to tuck in heartily.

21

GOODEARTH's Nilaya Dinner Plate

02

Follow the Pattern

GOODEARTH's Bidri Dinner Plate

If you find plain white plates a little too boring, then go for patterned ones that come in one or two colours. They are usually easier to coordinate with the rest of your table dĂŠcor and tend to be more affordable than those that come in complicated patterns like brightly coloured faĂŻence or majolica. Dishes also come in 3 types of designs namely: Classic, Modern and Romantic. Classic plates are generally dressed in straight lines, curvy designs or asymmetrical shapes, which are inspired by historical cultural movements such as Art Nouveau and Neoclassical. Love the intricacy of such patterns? Then check out GOODEARTH's Nilaya dinner plate (USD25). Modern plates such as the Bidri dinner plate (USD45) from GOODEARTH, on the other hand, are more on the abstract side and feature geometric themes. Romantic plates take their cue from Mother Nature and showcase living things such as flowers, birds, fruits and even seashells. No matter what your tastes are, be sure to work your table setting around the dinner plate.

22

03

Material, Girl

Dishes comes in a variety of materials, from bone china and porcelain to stoneware and earthenware. They also vary in terms of damage resistance, so do think about your needs before making a beeline for the cashier with your plates. Other factors to consider are whether the plates are dishwasher and microwave-safe. For dinnerware with metallic embellishment, it's usually not advisable to use them in the microwave. Here is a list of some materials that dishes typically come in:

Tiny Trains and Field Rose from Cath Kidston

Melamine This plastic material is both extremely affordable and resistant to damage such as scratches, breakage and shattering. If you're not looking for expensive dinnerware or you have butter fingers in the family, then this is a good option—like the lovely Field Rose (Cream, $11) and Tiny Trains ($8) dinner plates from Cath Kidston. The Trendy dinner plate from Hoover Melamine (price upon request) is also a stylish option if you prefer a simpler design.

Trendy Plate from Hoover Melamine

Bone China Don't let its delicate appearance fool you. Made from clay with added cow bone ash to give it an almost transparent white colour, bone china is highly durable so it's safe to use in both dishwasher and microwave. You can check out móderne's Tiffany plates if you love the idea of strength within frailty (Price: $12.45 per 10.5” Tiffany plate).

Móderne's Tiffany Plates

23

Porcelain or Fine China Yet another durable material safe enough to use in the dishwasher and microwave, porcelain is baked at a high temperature to create a strong non-porous surface like glass. Fine China, on the other hand, is fired at a lower temperature and is softer than porcelain so it's typically used in plates and cups like the dinnerware in the Svenska Hem collection from kikki.K. (Price: $16.90 per dinner plate) or the plates from the Komon series in the Kihara collection (Price: $48 per 24cm plate) that Supermama is currently carrying.

Svenska Hem Collection from Kikki.K Kihara Collection from Supermama

Earthenware This material may be heavy, but boasts a rich earthy appearance. Less durable than stoneware, earthenware is porous unless it has been glazed to make it water-tight. It's also quite fragile so it's not suitable for the dishwasher.

Stoneware Made from clay like earthenware, stoneware is non-porous and is highly durable. Although it has a similar appearance to earthenware, it's both chip and scratch-resistant.

Glass Available in a wide variety of colours and shapes, glass is dishwasher and microwave-safe but is generally more breakable than the rest of the materials. It's comparatively less expensive and won't warp, stain or absorb odours. Great for everyday use. While shopping for dishes, do take note that some dishes such as fa誰ence or majolica chip easily. So when they do, replacement is inevitable. In such cases, consider if they are easy to replace or you will end up with dinnerware that don't match.

Breathe Easier At Home

“

We tend to ignore the air quality at home, but it pays to play a more active role so your family's health won't be compromised. Here are some 'hacks' to help you and your family breathe easier! By Lilian Wu

You might think that air quality is something that you only worry about when you're outside e.g. the haze or smoke that hangs incessantly in the air like a pesky mosquito. But do you know that the air quality at home can also be a determining factor on your family's health? According to the World Health Organisation guidelines for indoor air quality, microbial pollution is a key element of indoor air pollution so it helps to take note of the common allergens that are hiding in your home. No matter how clean your house appears to be, allergens can still be tracked in from the outside or via your pets. Unless you're encased forever in a bubble like Bubble Boy, it pays to know the enemy and take the necessary steps to prevent an outbreak of poor health or inflammations.

28

DUST MITES

What: One of the highly suspect factors that cause sneezing fits, dust mites can cause allergies and trigger asthma symptoms. These microscopic insects feed on skin flakes (which have high protein content) and thrive best in environments where the relative humidity is 70% and the temperature is above 23°C. Many people think that dust mites are responsible for allergic reaction, but it's really the dust mite's fecal dropping and broken up exoskeletons that trigger the response. Where: Dust mites are most frequently found in dust-prone areas such as the mattress, pillows, carpets, rugs, upholstery and soft toys, where there are lots of food (shed skin cells), moisture (from perspiration and breathing), and warmth (body heat). Solution: To reduce the dust mite population in your home, the only solution is to do housekeeping. Here are some tips to reduce the nasty things' hold on your home:

• Change your bedding regularly. If your washing machine has such a feature, then do wash them in warm water to kill the dust mites. Otherwise, hang them to dry or air under direct sunlight. • Vacuum and clean places where people frequently sit or human traffic is heavy. • Use a vacuum cleaner that uses a HEPA filter. • Steam clean your carpets or rugs at least once a year. If your family is seriously allergic, then avoid wall-to-wall carpeting and go for alternatives such as tiles or wooden flooring instead. Apply anti-allergen to your carpets. • Invest in anti-allergen casings for your mattresses. • Do not use a feather duster as this only serves to displace the dust into the air; use a damp cloth to clean the dusty areas instead. • Keep your windows open to let in fresh air and cut down on humidity levels.

30

PESTS & PESTICIDES What: This is a no brainer, since body parts or droppings from pests such as cockroaches can trigger asthma symptoms in some people. To get rid of such pests, homeowners tend to use pesticides but do you know that it can affect the air quality at home too? This is due to the pollutants and volatile organic compounds (VOC) that are emitted by the pesticides, which can contribute to health problems for both humans and pets. Overuse or incorrect use of pesticides can also lead to a build-up of hazardous residues since the pesticide droplets may settle onto the furniture or other parts of your home. Where: They can be found everywhere at home, but are generally attracted to places where food and water are readily available. Solution: Make sure your house is clean and dry, so this means you have to:

MOULD AND MILDEW

• Clean, sweep and vacuum regularly. • De-clutter your house on a regular basis. • Wipe up spills or food stains immediately. • Do the dishes daily or keep them submerged in soapy water until you get around to washing them. • Store all food in sealed containers or in fridges. • Keep your kitchen and bathrooms as dry as possible, to prevent the dangerous build-up of stagnant water and breeding of mosquitoes. You should also check your house frequently and seal any cracks or crevices to prevent the pesky pests from invading your home. If you must use pesticides, follow all precautions as listed on the label and keep the pesticides out of your children's reach.

31

What: Aside from giving your home an unsightly appearance, they reproduce by sending tiny spores into the air—setting you up for a possible allergy reaction when you breathe them in, or when it propagates in moist areas. Many types of mould exist in the world, but there are only a few that can be harmful to your health. Even so, mould spores can be hazardous especially when they are present in abnormal quantities. Certain varieties also produce mycotoxins, which are harmful to your health. Some experts even claim that prolonged exposure can cause death! Whether this is true or not, mould and mildew are definitely not good for your health. Where: These fungi grow anywhere that is moist and dark e.g. bathrooms, basements, and kitchens. Solution: There are a few ways to cut down your exposure to mould and mildew, but the key is ensure adequate ventilation throughout the house. Another way is to pre-treat mould-prone areas such as bathroom ceilings with an anti-mould paint such as the Nippon Odour-less Anti-Mould Ceiling White paint. Ms Carrie Chen, Marketing Manager from Nippon Paint Singapore, had this to say, “Applying the Nippon Odour-less AntiMould Ceiling White is a fuss-free way of keeping mould at bay. It's formulated with anti-mould properties with a broad spectrum of protection against most species of mould. Applying the anti-mould

paint on surfaces help mitigate future mould or mildew growth...and provide additional benefits such as excellent coverage of minor flaws like cracks.” “However,” she cautioned, “while anti-mould paint is useful in mitigating the growth of the mould, it is not able to eliminate totally or block the moisture in the room if it is a case of water leakage or a badly ventilated environment." To reduce the odds of mould and mildew taking up residence at home, you can also consider the following tips: • Keep moisture-prone areas such as bathrooms, kitchens and basements well-ventilated. • Use a dehumidifier where possible or install vent fans in the bathrooms; clean them on a daily basis to keep them running smoothly. Do check with HDB or your building management before installing one. • Put a small dish of activated charcoal in affected areas to absorb excess moisture. • Make sure your clothes are thoroughly dry before putting them away. • Get rid of things that are already mouldy e.g. books and furniture. • Check your refrigerator for any signs of mould or mildew, and throw out any spoiled food. • Avoid putting plants in your bedroom; you may want to replace them with artificial ones instead.

You might think that these 'hacks' are common sense, but you will be surprised just how insidiously common indoor pollutants can be. There is no need to religiously scrub every inch of your home, but you do need to ensure that things are put away and properly cleaned so that movement is not obstructed or pose a danger to your family members. Doing so will not only prevent indoor pollutants from taking up residence in your home, it will help keep your loved ones healthier too!

5 Eco-Friendly Ways

To De-clutter Your Life

“

Is your home full of things that you don't need or can't bear to throw away? Here are a few easy tips that can help you de-clutter the eco-friendly way. By Lilian Wu

In 2010, the World Wildlife Fund named Singapore as having one of Asia-Pacific's largest ecological footprints per capita—which translates to the substantial pressure that human demand is placing on nature. In other words, the amount of land and water that we generally need to produce the resources we consume (e.g. food), provide the land for infrastructure, and absorb the carbon dioxide we generate are putting an enormous strain on our natural resources. While the government is taking steps to reduce the impact, there are ways that we can contribute as individuals too. One of the most effective ways is to de-clutter your home and reduce the amount of unnecessary items at home. Here are 5 eco-friendly tips to lighten your carbon footprint and perhaps, give your wallet a breather!

1

..BORROW OR SWAP If you're a bibliophile like me, then the touch and smell of books in your very own library at home are a must. No doubt there are e-books and digital devices, but they can never replace the awesome feels that you get when you see your shelves filled with your beloved tomes. The real problem comes when you start buying more books than you can read and the bookshelves look like World War 3 just broke out. Save the trees by making full use of your nearest National Library, or conduct regular book swaps with your fellow bibliophiles. This can apply to other items such as clothes too.

..CUT THE JUNK

2

..GO PAPERLESS If you haven't already done so, now is the time to go paperless with all your bills. Set up your bills to be paid via credit cards or Giro, and view your bills online so that it saves on paper and ink. This keeps your table nicely neat, and you'll never have to worry about missing out another bill again!

Hate how much junk you're receiving every day? Opt out of the nasty business of having to sort out the important letters from the advertisements by calling SingPost at their hotline 1605 or contact them via their query page at www. singpost.com. This applies to unaddressed mail, educational pamphlets from the government or advertisements that SingPost delivers as part of their service to companies. However, do note that you may miss out on furniture catalogues (like IKEA) and food coupons. You can also avoid other types of junk mail by setting up the anti-junk mail catch on your letterbox.

33

3

4

..RENT & EARN The first company to provide a peer-to-peer renting platform for individuals and companies, Rent Tycoons (www.renttycoons.com) allows you to rent out household items that are sitting around in your storerooms and make money at the same time! Absolutely great for people who can't bear to throw their things away, and yet can't decide what to do with them.

5

..DONATE TO A WORTHY CAUSE Give away your unwanted belongings for a good cause! If they're still in good condition, then do consider donating them to other people who need them more. Charity organisations such as The Salvation Army (www. salvationarmy.org/singapore) resell donations-in-kind at their Family Thrift Stores to support social programmes. Another note-worthy initiative is Pass It On (www.passiton.org.sg), which re-distributes unwanted household items in working condition to Voluntary Welfare Organisations (VWOs).

These steps may be small ones but as the saying goes: “little drops of water make the mighty ocean. Every little effort by us will eventually pay off.

PROPERTYMARKET

New Home Sales Nearly Double In May

With developers launching more private residential units at attractive prices, the sales volume in the primary market nearly doubled in May, after market activity had been subdued ever since the Total Debt Servicing Ratio (TDSR) framework was introduced. Excluding executive condominiums (ECs), sales of private

But it’s still too early to tell if Singapore’s housing market is picking up. By PropertyGuru.com.sg

homes surged from 749 units in April to 1,470 units in May. This is the first time in 2014 that developers sold more than 1,000 units a month and it is also the highest monthly figure since the TDSR came into effect in June 2013, said property consultancy Colliers International. Developers also launched a total of 1,790 units in May, up from the 600

units released in the previous month. At the same time, eight new private residential projects came into the market, compared to only two for each month from February to April. Specifically, buying activity in May was dominated by four projects – Coco Palms, Commonwealth Towers, The Panorama and Kallang Riverside, according to PropNex Realty.

35

COCO PALMS THE TOP PERFORMER

Image by CDL - The launch of Coco Palms drew large crowds.

Sales were led by Coco Palms where 590 units were taken up at a median price of $1,018 psf, followed by Commonwealth Towers which moved 275 units at $1,626 psf. Up next was The Panorama with 100 units sold at $1,241 psf while Kallang Riverside found buyers for 96 units at $2,111 psf. Location-wise, 944 units were sold in the Outside Central Region (OCR), while the Rest of Central Region (RCR) and Core Central Region (CCR) moved 494 and 32

units respectively. This means the OCR accounted for 64.2 percent of transactions, while the RCR and CCR contributed 33.6 percent and 2.2 percent of the deals respectively. Although May’s figures indicate a strong underlying demand for new homes, it is still too early to say that the market has rebounded, say experts. “While the May sales data may be interpreted positively, it would be premature to conclude that the market has revived from its slump,”

cautioned Ong Teck Hui, National Director of Research & Consultancy at JLL. He pointed out that 56 percent of launches and 59 percent of sales came from just two projects – namely Coco Palms and Commonwealth Towers – while some developments continue to struggle. “However, we could see healthy monthly sales in the future if more projects are priced realistically at levels that would draw in buyers,” Ong added.

MORE LAUNCHES EXPECTED BEFORE 7TH MONTH Encouraged by the healthy interest seen in May, developers may continue to launch more projects ahead of the seventh lunar month (August), which is regarded by the Chinese as an inauspicious period to buy a house, said Colliers. But sales of new private homes would likely dip in June as it is a traditionally slow time; given the school holidays and most developers tend to hold preview launches during the month. “Primary market sales volume

was expected to ease to the region of 600-900 units in June as developers concentrated on gathering potential buying interest and moving previously launched projects before embarking on official launches for their new projects closer to July,” the consultancy forecasted. Nevertheless, PropNex’s CEO Mohamed Ismail has a more optimistic outlook. “We expect sales performance in the subsequent months of 2014

to hover between an average of about 900 to 1,000 units per month. Private home sales in 2Q14 will likely improve by over 50 percent to about 3,000 units in total as market interest gradually returns with anticipation of developers’ attractive offerings.” He added: “For the whole of 2014, we envisage that sales volume will be between 11,000 to 12,000 units in all. This is about 20 percent shy of the 15,000 units in 2013.”

SHOW&TELL

A Walk On The Wild Side

“

Keeping a stiff upper lip has never been more surreal as French design house Ibride adds a touch of dark humour to the topsy turvy hybrid of Gothic designs, Victorian sensibilities and the wild side of Nature. By Lilian Wu

For centuries, animals have been the subject of many famous art and literary works. Think longtime favourites like 'Black Beauty' by English author Anna Sewell or artwork like 'The Horse Fair' by Rosa Bonheur. Even today, animals are still pretty much the favourite subject matter for artists and designers like Ibride. A French design house with one of the most recognisable collections in the world, Ibride (which means 'hybrid' in French) comprises a family trio of gifted creators: Rachel and BenoĂŽt Convers as well as Carine Jannin. They're known for designing extraordinary pieces that not only draw upon the wild beauty of animals, but are uniquely functional as well. We take a peek into their inner world to find out more about their fascination with animals and how that translates into their designs.

41

Q: Tell us a little about yourselves.

Q: What kind of story do you want

How did Ibride come into being?

your designs to tell?

A: Benoît is designer, Rachel is illustrator and Carine is editor. We are linked together by blood ties but each has their own know-how. From Rachel and Benoît‘s diverse creativity and from Carine’s desire to manufacture it...the singular adventure of Ibride was born. The 3 of us are fond of rare birds and other peculiarities. Our will is to inspire objects with a story, to reveal their secret life, to make them breathe. We try to create a distinctive freedom kingdom.

A: We like having the freedom, the lightness of playing with the codes, with the functions and the images. Our work draws from all the cultures, eras. We refuse to see the object as inert; we want to instil meaning into everyday objects, in order to accentuate the affection which attaches us to them. We claim for our work the naming of “Independent Design”, and try to prove in every creation that the function can liven up emotions, memories, and senses.

Q: What are some of the more interesting challenges you've faced and how did you solve them?

Q: You seem to have a penchant

A: The projects we develop are those that bring us together; up to the one who initiates the project to attract and convince the other 2...It's a game and this gives rise to particular exchanges that are very rewarding. The starting point of each collection is an intuition of one or another. We launch challenges, share our ambitions, our convictions and we find ourselves on specific objectives. Even if Ibride has gradually structured itself in business, we keep an instinctive art direction based on shared emotions.

for putting animal heads in Victorian-inspired paintings, what inspired you to do that and how do you decide what kind of animal head goes into which painting? A: We like that birds, bovine or primates allow themselves to point our origins, draped in prestigious costumes as improbable ancestors. They seem to play off us through an exchange of looks, probably to question us about our own part of animality. It definitely makes our seriousness completely derisory. The animal world concerns us particularly in the fact that it's representative of our own characters. We allow ourselves

the amazing ability to change and make better what seems unchangeable...to the point where we give birth to new realities. Q: What are the lessons that you've

picked up along the way and how have they influenced your design process today? A: We would like the famous market to open itself a bit more to difference. Apartments using the fashion codes of the day are very depressing. They don’t reflect anything any more. Neither the personality of the people living in it, nor even their origins, their history. Such a media smoothing is distressing. We like objects that stir up a debate.

A big fan of animal-inspired furniture pieces? Then do check out Ibride's collections at: FRED LIVES HERE Address: Orchard Central Mall, 181 Orchard Road #02-14 Singapore 238896 Tel: 6634 3733 Web: www.fredliveshere.com

Equine Beauty

Inspired by the timeless legends of famous steeds in ancient China, Tittot and Franz came up with their own exclusive collections to give life to these renowned horses and their unyielding strength, to encourage everyone to embrace their true passion, seize the opportunities at hand as well as to attain the peak of excellence. By Lilian Wu

Steeds Sweeping Far & Wide Salt and Pepper Shakers from Franz Singapore ($290/a set of two) According to the Chinese zodiac, people who are born in the year of the horse are free-spirited and independent. And since 2014 is considered to be the year of the Horse by the Chinese, Tittot and Franz Collection Inc. launched their respective collections in conjunction with the lunar year to celebrate all the positive attributes of this elegant animal—vigour, courage and tenacity, among others. Tales of old, too, have heroes crusading through lands untold on their loyal steeds. There is even a Chinese idiom about the magnificent beast: 马到成功 – mă dào chéng gōng, which basically means instant success (success upon the arrival of the horse). With such auspicious connotations behind the Horse, it's no wonder they make wonderful gifts for festivities, weddings and even inauguration of new businesses.

Swift Steed from Franz Singapore ($390)

47

“The horse symbolises fortitude and perseverance in the Chinese culture, and it galvanises the human spirit to always take courage and to bear hope. As we enter 2014, a year where the economy remains uncertain and we remain mindful of the recent environmental disasters, it is important for individuals and businesses to stay strong and brave the different challenges." Desmond Teo

Sole Domination from Tittot ($6,180)

Immediate Wealth from Tittot ($280)

If you're in love with the Horse but don't want something too oldfashioned, then do check out these two collections from Tittot and Franz Collection Inc. In fact, we like how they manage to combine both modern aesthetics and traditional art forms within an elegant form. The porcelain horses from Franz also have a somewhat playful air so they'll make a suitable present for the young at heart. They even have a rather cute set of Steeds Sweeping Far & Wide salt and pepper shakers ($290) that can double up as kitchen decoration. The Tittot collection 'Leap over the Peak', on the other hand, is a celebration of their 20th anniversary in 2014 and embodies Tittot's ambition to grow in leaps and bounds. Captured in various poses to emulate the great strength and valour of the stallion, the horses in this collection are exquisitely crafted and polished

by Tittot's very own Mirror-like Polishing methodology to create gorgeous handmade art glass. Our favourite horse? It has got to be the adorable 'Immediate Wealth' (马 上有錢, $280) with images of coins engraved onto it, because who doesn't like the thought of instant ka-ching, right? Mr. Desmond Teo, Director of Reflections Enterprise Pte Ltd, the exclusive Tittot and Franz distributor for Singapore & Malaysia said: “The horse symbolises fortitude and perseverance in the Chinese culture, and it galvanises the human spirit to always take courage and to bear hope. As we enter 2014, a year where the economy remains uncertain and we remain mindful of the recent environmental disasters, it is important for individuals and businesses to stay strong and brave the different challenges."

The ‘Leap over the Peak’ collection is now available exclusively in Singapore at the Tittot boutique at Takashimaya. You can also find the Franz 2014 collection at Franz boutiques at 137 Telok Ayer and Takashimaya.

GEOMANCY

The Balancing Act If you take a minute to observe, you can see balance everywhere. Think about it; everything we do in life involves balance, we juggle both work and fun, dreams and reality, and we try to excel in gathering wealth while maintaining our health. So it is natural to see the dominant role balance plays in improving the Feng Shui of your home, as well. Feng Shui isn’t all about positioning or location (although they do play a rather huge role); it’s also about seeking a balance in your residence, to catalyse and shower certain changes or harmony on your life. Thus, if you think that Feng Shui is all about the placement of your baby cradle or the size of your aquarium inside your house, then you’re right at being wrong. Balance, in Feng Shui, is about maintaining the factors both inside, as well as outside the residence. Let me clarify that Feng Shui actually begins from the external part of the house before it flows gracefully into the interior. So why give 100% effort on the inside while leaving your external, the starting point of Qi, deserted?

1

THE DRIPS ON EXTERNAL WATER FEATURES Take note that flow of Qi could easily be affected by the placement and presence of drains. Visible deep drains with constant flow, which cuts across your property, embodies the very negative Cutting Feet Water. This could spell disaster in Feng Shui. If such feature is visible, it is important to cover and conceal it, or at best, avoid it. Ponds or lakes are considered very good Feng Shui fixture, as it helps to collect Qi in its sentimental water. While it is propitious, it is important to note the correct location of it in relation to your property. Waterfalls are soothing but are they friends or foes? The latter apparently, as the thunderous sound of water clashing attracts negative Qi, in the form of Sha Qi. This form of Sha Qi is damaging to your career prospect and the mental well-being of the residents.

3

PROTECT YOUR FENCE AND GATE. Feng Shui or not, the fence and gate are the protectors and sentinels of your home. If used correctly, fences can direct and coagulate the Qi to your advantage. Used incorrectly, however, it could suppress good Qi and attract the negative ones. As an owner, you should pay extra attention to these kinds of fences: fences that point inwards, fences with gap or cracks, fences that are too high or too close to the house. Likewise, the gate to your home is the Qi mouth to the property. It should always be located at the place where it’s conducive towards Qi flow. When it comes to Feng Shui, always look at the bigger picture. Plucking and practising one aspect of Feng Shui will not help in improving anything significantly. Balance is everything, so remember to retain this in your life.

49

2

OF GARDEN, PATIO AND PERGOLA While Garden Feng Shui works its craze around the world, you don’t have to practise it blindly. Sure, pathways, plants, and trees improve the aesthetic nature of your garden but don’t hope for more - they certainly do not result in positive Qi. Garden lamps, on the other hand, could hurt the Qi if it’s placed directly in front of any door to your property - so beware! As you do not sleep there at night, the patio is not really an important consideration for outdoor Feng Shui. A pergola may be an arresting sight, but observe the direction of the edges of its roof, and make sure they do not point to the Main Door directly.
