Performance meets simplicity

Nobody wants to deal with dirty laundry and a dusty floor after a long day’s work. To lighten your load, we look at two innovative solutions by Samsung.

WASHING MADE SIMPLER Do you throw your dirty clothes into the washing machine and let it do its magic? Or do you take the extra step to soak and scrub grime off before that? We all have our laundry habits, but this doesn’t mean we can’t all enjoy the convenience of machine washing.

Built-in sink for seamless washing Samsung Activ DualWashTM Top Load Washing Machine offers the unprecedented feature of a built-in sink with side water jet, which sits right above the tub. This allows you to pre-treat your clothes without soapsuds or water drips on the floor. For multigenerational households, pre-washing clothes at standing height makes laundry easier without worrying about our elders suffering from back sprain or slipping while carrying a heavy washing load.

Efficient cleaning Care has been taken to ensure clothes are well washed without damage, and it’s evident in the nifty features. For example, Magic DispenserTM creates a water vortex to dissolve detergent completely before dispensing into the wash. Fluff and other particles are effectively gathered through a long and wide side filter, leaving clothes lint-free. The filter can then be easily removed and cleaned without clogging up drainage. WobbleTM pulsators generate a multi-directional washing flow to prevent tangling and creases, and by using Digital Inverter Technology, it reduces wear and noise while staying energy efficient.

Activ DualWashTM washing machines will be available from Feb 15 at all major consumer electronic stores.

TRUE PERFORMANCE WITH POWER Daily dust that settles on flooring is not only icky to the touch, it also irritates the nose. If you’re not up for daily sweeping, a robotic vacuum cleaner is a good option. Try Samsung’s most powerful robotic vacuum cleaner*, whose claim to fame is its superior suction power. Powerbot boasts a Digital Inverter Motor that produces up to 60 times** more suction power than other conventional robotic vacuum cleaners.

Strong and sustained vacuum power It’s important that your vacuum cleaner keeps going for a sustained period of time to cover your entire house. More often than not though, suction power weakens due to clogging of the air filter, making it necessary to clean it from time to time. Powerbot’s CycloneForce technology circumvents this by generating a centrifugal force to separate dust and grime from air. This minimises clogging and ensures robust vacuum power for longer.

Maps the best path Additional features such as Virtual GuardTM, which keeps Powerbot away from places you want it to avoid, and automatic docking and recharging make it handier. Its intelligence shines through in its ability to map out your house for the most efficient cleaning path with a pretty savvy Visionary MappingTM Plus System. Precise navigation is aided by its FullViewTM Sensor, which locates and avoids obstacles in its way.

Quick and convenient Powerbot also has a handy feature for spot cleaning. With a Point CleaningTM controller, you can manually direct Powerbot to dirty spots with a pointer light beam. Just be informed that your laserloving cat may join in the fun!

Powerbot Robotic vacuum cleaner will be available from Feb 15 at all major consumer electronic stores. *In comparison with Samsung Singapore's 2015 robotic vacuum cleaner range. ** Compared with Samsung SR10F71UC

Issue 09 - March 2015

MORE SPACE, IS THAT WHAT YOU NEED? Gong Xi Fa Cai! It’s just the end of the Chinese New Year celebrations. Is your festive shopping mood still tickling? You may have just gotten your keys and are feeling all excited stepping into your home for the first time. The empty spaces look so alluring, don’t they? Are you tempted to fill them up? But wait, is fitting everything you want really possible? It's no secret that Singapore homes are getting smaller. Everyone has at least one room in their home that’s too small and possibly problematic to decorate. A new homeowner like you, I've just gotten the keys to my flat and am busy with my renovation and interior shopping. But I keep reminding myself and my wife that we don’t buy the unnecessary, so that our love nest doesn't look too cluttered. Many people always tell me that they have ideas of what they want to do with their new homes but they have no clue on how to put everything together. Actually, you don’t have to burn your pockets to get a biggerlooking house. In our Cover Story (p14) and Simply ID (p58), we show you some tricks (which I apply to my home as well) to fool your eyes in believing that you have a big space. However, if you really can’t fight the shopaholic in you, check out Flavour of the Month (p34) and Local Delights (p26) for interior pieces that can still make your small space look more inviting, multi-functional and utterly chic, all at the same time! I believe that no matter how generous your home’s square footage, chances are, at some point it will seem like the walls are closing in on you. But you don’t have to take this downsized version of your life lying down. We hope that this issue of RenoNation can help to reclaim your living space. Well, in a small space, everything counts! COVERSTORY

8 Tips to Make Your Home Look Bigger Let’s face it, most homes won’t look like the grand retreats that we hoped they would as space is a form of luxury on our densely-populated island. However, this doesn’t mean that they have to feel cramped. From optical illusion to colour schemes, we bring you 8 design tips (or tricks) to make even the smallest space feel amazingly "up-sized", and without a hefty price-tag! BY ALAN LI

TIP 1

"RAISE EYEBROWS" AS YOU LOOK UP Did you know? By moving the eyes upwards you can create the illusion of having bigger spaces. You can begin by painting or having wallpapers on your ceilings and be amazed! Attention drawn upwards makes a room feel larger! The same applies to hanging shelves near the ceiling as these accentuate the height of a room’s ceiling, making it seemingly more spacious. DIY wall-mounted shelves hung in bathrooms and bedrooms are great for items like spare towels and winter wear.

TAKE A NEUTRAL STANCE Just like clothes, lighter colours tend to maximise an area with a more powerful visual impact as it reflects light, while darker hues magnify the shape but not the area as it absorbs light. Try cream, beige, brown, light grey or even blue to keep things light, airy and open. For the wall, rug and furniture, using different shades of the same colour can create a visual coherence that can also make the space feel open.

TIP 3

TOP: Image by Urban Habitat

USE STRIPES TO ELONGATE THE SPACE Just like vertical stripes on clothing, striped rugs not only add a great graphic element but help elongate a space as well. The stripes should go the length of the room that is the longest for optimal effect. However, it's important to use colours that either contrast or are from the same colour family. Clashing colours like orange and purple or red and pink can look cluttered and distracting. Striped bedsheets can create this visual impact as well!

15 renonation.sg

TIP 2

16 renonation.sg

TIP 4

COLOUR CODE YOUR STUFF Give your prized collections a little structure by arranging them in colours, types or sizes. Anything that makes a group of smaller items look intentionally arranged will make a space neater and seemingly more spacious. This will avert a potential clutter disaster and conjure a streamlined display with personality instead. This works for books or anything else that is visible in your home.

TIP 5

KEEP THINGS CLEAR If you are thinking of having an element in your bathroom, why not opt for clear ones? From clear shower curtains, trash bins to even shelves, using clear materials like glass or Lucite will cut down on the visual heaviness of a room. This also applies to other furniture in the living room or kitchen. By seeing right through them (literally), it gives the illusion of more space, “fooling your eyes thinking that the room is bigger than it actually is! LEFT: Image by Space Concept

SPACE IT OUT Simply pull furniture away from the wall and it magically creates the illusion of spaciousness! While pushing furniture against the wall makes everything look and feel cramped, merely leave a few inches in between the wall and your bigger items can make the space look more open. Try angling your bed or floating the sofa in the living room with a skinny console behind it. It produces breathing room around your furniture that gives the perception of greater space. RIGHT: Image by Dyel Design

TIP 7

SEE THE LIGHT More natural light gives a space more depth! Leave your windows uncovered and this will trick your eyes into thinking that the room has depth, while revealing the natural landscape outside. If privacy is a concern, consider blinds instead of curtains to look less crowded. White mesh drapes can also be used for an open and airy feel while keeping prying eyes out.

17 renonation.sg

TIP 6

18 renonation.sg

TIP 8

PLACE THEM RIGHT, MIRRORS CAN DO WONDERS Last but not least, MIRRORS! Mirrors are by far the most frequent advice by IDs. It can be in your living room or bathroom, a large clear mirror can immediately double your space. Placing a mirror across from a window is the best way to reflect light and make the room feel larger. If you have a great view, your mirror can capture the view, bringing the view into your home!

Ultimately, space creation is an art and the general rule is to keep things simple. Clear the clutter relentlessly and keep things on the move. Foldable tables and chairs can be kept in storerooms and “activated when company comes over. A neat area will definitely look bigger than one filled with random little things.

Don’t Wash Dirty Linen in Public Thanks to the inventor of the washing machine that we don’t have to “wash our dirty linen in public”! However, not everyone has the luxury of having a designated laundry room in their new “spaceconscious” homes, and this makes choosing the right washing machine very important. Ditch your worries as we explore the world of washing machines with you to seek your ideal cleaning companion. BY ALAN LI

Back to Basics Cleaning is now far more convenient and less time-consuming than ever before with smart features that can adjust water and energy consumption or you may not even know what they are for. With the large varieties of these washing devices out there, the basic thing that you really need to know is your laundry load. Is it just the two of you or a family of ten? The load capacity of the washing machines range in sizes, so choosing the right size without overcrowding your laundry can prevent your clothes from turning wrinkled. A 7-8kg washing machine can normally take a queen size comforter, but for a king size one, better stick to a 9-10kg!

Are your dishwasher and tumble dryer always jostling for position? Stacking your dryer on top of your washing machine with a stacking kit may be a great way Bosch Stackable Washer Serie 4 ($1,499) Size:85cm(H) x 60cm(W) x 60cm(D) Load Capacity: 7kg

to save some of those precious kitchen centimetres. It also makes it easy to switch between machines. Also, since they will most likely be placed prominently, a nice pair will definitely enhance the overall look of the kitchen. Most stacking washers, if not PROS

all, are front-loaders which normally have more room for dirty clothes and require fewer loads compared to a top-loader. What’s more, they need less water and tend to be quieter.

Bosch Stackable Condenser Dryer ProSensor ($1,799) Size: 84cm(H) x 60cm(W) x 64cm(D) Load Capacity: 7kg

Stacking front-loaders are CONS

generally more expensive than top-loaders. They also tend to have a longer wash time cycle and once you start the cycle, you can’t stop during mid cycles like the top-loaders.

Miele W1 Series WKF120 Washer ($1,999) Size: 85cm(H) x 59.6cm(W) x 63.6cm(D) Load Capacity: 8kg

Miele Tumble T1 Series TKB440 Dryer ($1,999) Size: 85cm(H) x 59.6cm(W) x 63.6cm(D) Load Capacity: 8kg

22 renonation.sg

GET A COMBO! – THE ALL-IN-ONE WASHER-DRYER If your washer and dryer are both fighting for space, why not make them a combo? This is the perfect solution to maximise your space while providing the laundry care you need. An All-in-One washer-dryer

LG 6 Motion Front Load Direct Drive Washer Dryer ($1,499) Size: 85cm(H) x 60cm(W) x 55cm(D) Load Capacity: 8kg / 4kg

will only need half the amount of space usually required for a separate washing machine and clothes dryer. Furthermore, a washer dryer combo allows clothes to be washed and dried "in one go", saving time and effort! Washer-dryer combo is PROS

convenient as you do not need to manually move clothes from the washer to the dryer and it takes up half the space. Also, most combos use technology similar to front-loaders, therefore using less water and electricity. The washer-dryer combo

CONS

has a limited capacity as compared to a typical washing machine. Also, it is more timeconsuming. Since there is no

LG Inverter Direct Drive 6 Motion Front Loader ($2,199) Size: 85cm(H) x 60cm(W) x 64cm(D) Load Capacity: 12kg / 8kg

miracle in a jiffy, you cannot escape from planning to do the laundry well ahead.

Bosch Washer Dryer ProAir ($2,199) Size: 84.5cm(H) x 60cm(W) x 59cm(D) Load Capacity: 7kg / 4kg

If you’re exploring an alternative to a fullsize, energy-guzzling setup, consider a compact washer! Small enough to slide under a counter and efficient, they're now loaded with features that used to be LG Super Slim Washer ($799) Size: 85cm(H) x 60cm(W) x 35cm(D) Load Capacity: 3.5kg

reserved for the big boys. If you still prefer a bigger capacity, then opt for a washing machine with a 12kg load capacity but with a physical size similar to a 9kg! Compact washers are PROS

utilitarian in that they will clean your clothes without taking up much space in your home. If you have a packed kitchen, you can even opt to put it in the bathroom (if it is big enough) to handle your daily wash. Washers with a compact

CONS

size normally comes with a smaller load capacity. You can’t possibly fit in your queen size comforter. Do

LG Dirct Drive 6 Motion Top Loader ($1,299) Size: 99cm(H) x 59cm(W) x 60.6cm(D) Load Capacity: 12kg

also take out your clothes right after washing in a compact washer as it will take a longer time for them to dry.

DID YOU KNOW?

From Scrub Board to the Mighty Thor It was known that the earliest washing "machine" was actually a scrub board invented in 1797 which used hands to wash clothes. An American James King patented the first washing machine to use a drum in 1851, which already resembled a modern machine, but was still hand powered. It was till 1908 when humans celebrated the birth of the first electric-powered washing machine named “The Thor”. Introduced by the Hurley Machine Company of Chicago, Illinois, the Thor washing machine was invented by Alva J. Fisher. The Thor was a drum-type washing machine with a galvanised tub and an electric motor. This marked a milestone for the development of many washing machines with smart features we see today.

Make Every Square Foot Work Harder Starving for space? “Superheroes” are here to save your day! Smart and functional furniture is the gospel of the new generation. Designed to change its function with a click or a button, it is easy to save valuable space! Now let’s call upon these “Superheroes” to see how they create space without compromising on design or convenience! BY ALAN LI

Furniture Tips to“Upsize” your Home! TIP 1

Less is more!

In a small living room, one large sofa instead of multiple small pieces actually reduces the clutter feeling and makes a room feel bigger.

TIP 2

Dare to be different!

A living room doesn’t mean you need a sofa or a coffee table. Unexpected furniture and layout will make the space itself feel more open and fun.

TIP 3

Go the distance!

Place furniture wider apart to emphasise the space between them as this not only creates more spacious functional space, but is also more pleasing to the eyes.

THE “KEEPERS” Maximise space, minimise the clutter by making each piece of furniture work harder! With hidden and multi-purpose furniture, you can easily clear up a mess within seconds by just keeping all your stuff well “under wraps”. Your “secrets” are well-hidden unless you reveal.

THE “ILLUSIONISTS”

How to Recycle a Glass Jar into a Cookie Jar Can’t keep your hands off the cookie jar? Why not try making one yourself? Don’t get me wrong as I‘m not referring to the song by Gym Class Heroes but literally a real cookie jar! Angie Ong from Angie’s Napkin Decoupage Shop shows you the ropes on how to transform a normal-looking glass jar into a beautifully-decorated cookie jar by simply using paper napkins, paints and the decoupage technique.

BEFORE & AFTER DECOUPAGE

WHAT IS DECOUPAGE? "Decoupage is the art of decorating an object by gluing coloured paper cut-outs, paper napkins or specially printed decoupage papers onto it in combination with special paint effects... the final layer is sealed with multiple layers of varnish until the 'stuck on' appearance disappears and the result looks like painting or inlay work." −Angie Ong Interesting, right? We love how decoupage can literally recreate

Investing in Landed Properties

TOP: Image by Nikki De Guzman

43 renonation.sg In land-scarce Singapore, landed properties are considered an exclusive investment and they stand at the top of the real estate heap. While its allure lies mostly in being a reliable investment, the idea of “landed” living is also one that holds much appeal for its promise of expanse—both inside and out. According to a recent Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) report, there are only 71,471 landed properties in Singapore, as at the third quarter of 2014. Landed properties make up only 24 percent of the total private residential properties stock in Singapore (refer to below chart). As such, the limited supply of landed homes in Singapore has helped their prices hold up better compared to condominium units, making them a good long-term investment.

Chart 1 Decline in landed property prices A Knight Frank research report revealed that prices of private landed properties declined for a fourth consecutive quarter, falling 1.8 percent quarter-on-quarter, or 5.1 percent year-on-year. And according to the URA, prices of landed properties fell by 5.2 percent for the whole of 2014.

Although landed property prices are still on the high side, analysts collectively agree that these properties will still make good long-term investments. For those purchasers looking to buy a landed property in a prime area, districts 9 and 10 are hotspots that they should consider, as it is home to several reputable schools including Raffles Girls’ Primary School, Nanyang Primary School, Singapore Chinese Girls’ School, Anglo-Chinese School and Hwa Chong Institution. One development to consider is Palms @ Sixth Avenue, a freehold cluster house development by MCL Land Pte Ltd located along Sixth Avenue – this development not only benefits from its proximity to several reputable schools, but it is also within walking distance to a host of amenities, offering residents with utmost convenience.

AESTHETICVALUE

The Classy Glass Unlike other rooms where you call the shots on what to put, the kitchen decides for you. Some large appliances like the cooker hob and hood are definitely the must-haves but fret not as it’s still possible that space and style exists in your kitchen. Glass hobs for example are gaining popularity as they're easier to clean and blend really well with modern kitchen décor. And the best part is, they function just like the stainless steel ones! Read on to find out more! BY ALAN LI

02 TEMPERED GLASS GAS HOB Gas hobs are widely popular because they’re easy to control and cook with. There is little restriction on cookware with the gas hob, and you can even choose to have your flame “hidden”(with an inner burner) or “exposed” to suit your needs. If you are a wok person, gas hobs are definitely your choice as woks are designed for cooking over an open flame, and an electric hob can’t do as good. For added safety, go for those that have automatic shut-off valves to cut off gas if the flame goes out.

A: The use of raw bricks laid randomly does not make the wall look structured. Combination of unique laminates, raw wood and floor designs finish off the look. Q: Why was this concept chosen? A: We always loved the raw industrial look, but with a touch of warmth and personal vibe through having little decorations. We decided to keep it raw while making sure it is practical for everyday use. Q: Which part of the renovation do you like the most? A: Love everything!! But if I were to choose, the TV console was specially designed to stand out from ordinary store-bought furniture. These were made from raw wood boxes and crates. TO RU S S E L L Q: What is your total budget for your home renovation? A: $70k Q: What is the overall concept of your home? A: Modern Resort Q: How was this concept portrayed through the renovation? A: There is a selection of 'raw aesthetic' laminates for all carpentry works. White craft stone was also used in the living room with a raw stone design on the feature wall. A carefully-selected range of wooden style furniture were bought–solid wood dining table, chairs & coffee table. To add a touch of modernisation, bronze mirrors were extensively used throughout the entire house.

Q: Why was this concept chosen? A: As we travel very often, we wanted to create a resort house at home that feels like a premium international hotel. Resort style has always been in trend and I believe it will still continue to stay in the near future. Themes such as Industrial and Scandinavian designs are now in trend, but practically everyone is doing it. So I felt there was no sense of identity if I were to follow. Hence, Modern Resort Style was chosen to create an identity of our own. Q: Which part of the renovation do you like the most? A: It will be the TV feature wall in the living room. The designer used fibre glass panels specially imported from overseas and customised the colour. It is very unique. Another one of my favourites is the design of the false ceiling in the living. A: The soft-closing hinges all around the home are purchased from Blum. There are also other parts such as the top hanging sliding door for wardrobe, concealed mirror door for master bathroom with unique soft窶田losing capability. High range quartz top with mirror chip was used for the kitchen top. Marble top was used for both bathroom vanities. Q: What is the most unique part of the entire renovation work? A: It would be the Master bedroom. Hacking the walls and combining 2 rooms into 1 allows a majestic full height cushion bed head with customised King-size bed frame enhanced with LED lights installed beneath the bed frame. We also did a combined design for both the TV feature wall/ console & study table. (that makes the front a TV area, and the back, a study area)

SIMPLYID

Know Your ID: Sky Creation BY ALAN LI

A brand new home comes with a fresh new start. But where do you start? If an interior designer (ID) comes to mind, do note that this new relationship you’re about to establish will be, by its very nature, intimate. Take some time to consider just what it is you want from this person you're inviting into your life so that you can reap extensive benefits. As with any relationship, clear communication can prevent misunderstandings. When most people think about hiring an ID, they focus on the aesthetics like wall colours or cabinet patterns. But that's just scratching the surface of what an ID can bring to a home. They can go beyond cosmetic concerns to ensure that a home feels spacious and cosy, from simple decorations to massive makeover. This issue, we speak to ASTLEY NG FROM SKY CREATION to understand what IDs can offer.

» WHAT IS YOUR ROLE IN SKY CREATION? I am the regional design principal for the company. I handle all design-related matters and design consultancy for the Group. These include both the local and overseas branches.

ID Firm: Sky Creation Address: No 8, Kim Keat Lane, Singapore 328865 Tel: 6352 8809 Web: www.skycreationdc.com

» CAN YOU SHARE A BIT MORE ABOUT SKY CREATION? This company was established by my boss Dr. Sky Tan in 2008 (so bearing the name Sky Creation). It started off as a small shop in Balestier and gradually became what we are today with five niche showrooms. To meet our clients’ needs, we conduct workshops to speak to homeowners on what’s best for them and their homes as every homeowner has varying lifestyle requirements. In order for us to offer them the best advice, we get them to share their personal preferences and these sessions can help us to better identify and propose tailored-made solutions for them. We have also since expanded overseas with branches in Beijing, Shanghai, Sydney, Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru.

» WITH SPACE BECOMING A LUXURY IN MOST SINGAPORE HOMES, HOW HAVE SKY CREATION HELPED HOMEOWNERS DEAL WITH THIS? Small-space living or design is about optimising functions. In all instances, we try to increase mileage and multiple usages to any customised carpentry. For example, we once made a study desk that had a flip-up panel to reveal a mirror and double up as a dresser or vanity. We had also built a dining table that came with an integrated storage at the base to store extra plates, bowls and utensils. » DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS TO CREATE MORE SPACE AT HOME? Space enhancements can come from a visual and aesthetic approach. From adding mirrors strategically to create double-volume effect, to using light colours to brighten up the place, all these approaches will help when you target large surface areas like walls. You can also ‘float’ furniture off the floor and suspend them like TV consoles, study desks, so that they do not consume valuable floor space. Furthermore, using glass is also a very good way as it creates a sense of ‘weightlessness’.

» WHAT ARE SOME COMMON MISTAKES MADE WHEN HOMEOWNERS TRY TO MAKE THEIR HOMES LOOK MORE SPACIOUS? Well, a common mistake that homeowners usually make is adding mirrors in the wrong spaces where they don’t reflect light properly to create the double volume. An example is to place a mirror along a narrow passageway. The mirror will only reflect the passageway and that does nothing to create any optical illusion. » WHAT WAS THE MOST CHALLENGING PROJECT YOU HAVE UNDERTAKEN? HOW DID YOU RESOLVE IT? Every project has its challenges and I welcome them. I deal with them with passion and heart. I always try to counsel and guide our clients to get the best possible results. So that’s what I do, resolve them with the correct mindset and attitude. » WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST SATISFACTION WHEN IT COMES TO INTERIOR DESIGN? Every job builds and refines my design language. Therefore the satisfaction is in getting a chance to expose and learn. And of course, the pay helps too. (laughs)

Sky Creation is an interior design firm that seeks to understand and cater to the needs of every client. Led by Dr. Sky Tan and supported by dedicated and professional designers and architects like Astley, they constantly provide a listening ear and a helping hand to build the ‘perfect’ home for homeowners. Simply EnLIGHTening It’s thin, light and flexible, just like a strip of paper and it generates negligible heat! Yes! This may be the future of our lighting system – Cloud Lighting! It will be showcased in this year’s International Furniture Fair Singapore (IFFS) but before that, we chatted with Kenny Hong, the mastermind behind the artpiece to catch a glimpse of his unique design and how he views the future of the design scene in Singapore. BY ALAN LI

"

"The flexibility and thinness of the Printed Lighting material enables it to curl and be cut, making it possible to create a visual interaction of curvilinear planes, giving the effect of the swirling movements.” – Kenny Hong

ALAN » Can you explain a little bit more about how this works? KENNY » This is a new technology named Printed Lighting which presents an innovative and appealing material for furniture design without the use of complex optics. In this technology created by A*STAR, electrically functional inks are deposited on materials such as plastic or metal foil, giving rise to sleek dimensions and an aesthetically pleasing, uniform diffused light. ALAN » Where did you get the inspiration for this design? KENNY » The inspiration for this lighting installation came from a passage in the Bible. A Cloud that changed into a pillar of fire at night guided and protected the people of Israel as they wandered in the wilderness. Through this lighting installation, which resembles a cloud, I hope that I can portray a similar concept of divine guidance for the design community in Asia. ALAN » How do you think lightings can change the entire environment at home or at work? KENNY » To me, lighting is a kind of mood creation. It can also create a certain focal point, so that visually, there is depth. People always think that by making everything bright, they can make the place look more spacious but to me, it makes everything flat. When we create different pockets of light, the eyes are being brought to different areas, thereby creating depths that give the illusion of spaciousness.

ALAN » You pursued your Masters Degree in Italy after working for more than a decade. Do you think a designer need to pursue higher education? KENNY » I think the answer is a yes and no. To me, you need to have practical experience, so after your basic education, you should get your hands dirty and do the hard work. Then you’ll know if design is really for you. That’s the hard skills. Then, you need the higher education for the thought process which is the soft skills. The school can provide something conceptual rather than practical stuff and you need both. If you are a person who always pursue the thinking yourself, then you don’t need the higher education.

No more losing of keys with another of Kenny's multi-purpose table lamp that provides a storage space made of magnet for little accessories like the keys or rings.

ALAN » What is design to you? KENNY » I don’t like to be stuck in something for too long and I think design is like that. You’ll never do the same job, especially in product design. Everything is new as you’re always dealing with different problems and different target groups. I believe that design is about making things easy for people to see. Like the culturally-reserved Japanese, they put their nature into their designs, creating the Japanese style. The Italians, though more fanciful, fluid and vocal, also simplify their style to create the Italian style. It’s about the thought process and the simplification.

WHO IS KENNY HONG? Kenny was the Head of Product Development at Technigroup before joining Design Studio Furniture Manufacturer Ltd as the Head of Product Development, where he developed kitchen and wardrobe designs for the China and Singapore markets. He has since set up his own design consultancy firm, 11H design, providing product trainings and continues to produce unique designs for home furnishings. He graduated with a Double Masters in Design (with Distinction) from the Domus University in Italy and the University of Wales, United Kingdom in 2007. He is one of the Boards of Examiner for the Advanced Diploma in Interior Architecture and Landscape at BCA as well as Diploma in Product Design at LaSalle College of the Arts. He also works as a part-time lecturer at the NTU and SIM University.

We love how a Singaporean is making waves in the local design scene! Keen to know more about Kenny's work? He will be exhibiting his new works at the upcoming international Furniture Fair Singapore (IFFS) from 13-16 March 2015. You can also email him at kenny@11h.com.sg for more details.

ALAN » You currently teach in NAFA and NTU among others. Are design graduates lacking in something? KENNY » I feel a lot for teaching and I really wish to train the new designers. The young design graduates have aspirations and expectations. The manufacturers who hire them have another set of expectations and often, their expectations don’t match. The manufacturers will tell me fresh grads lack the technicalities and know-hows and need at least 2 years before they can be productive. During this time, designers will disillusion, asking what they got themselves into, and they give up. I hope to help them be more prepared in life by bridging the gaps. So I started my company.

GEOMANCY

Feng Shui Made Easy Before assessing the interior of a property, a classically-trained Feng Shui practitioner will begin by first assessing the exterior of the property—namely the surrounding landforms. Traditionally called Luan Tou or Forms in modern terms, these Forms will help indicate the type and quality of the Qi found in the surrounding area of the property. The Feng Shui practitioner will determine if the landform is positive or negative and whether the flow is blocked or free flowing. Aside from evaluating the Forms of a property, a Feng Shui practitioner must also consider the formulas that dictate the way in which the energy map of an area is calculated and drawn. Using these formulas, the practitioner is then able to assess the quality of the Qi of the area and thus make a full Feng Shui analysis by studying these Forms and using the Formulas presented before them. After this process, the Feng Shui practitioner can then focus on analysing the property itself and the three more important areas, namely the main door area, the kitchen and the bedroom.
