EDITOR'SNOTE
Issue 11 - September 2015
Whenever I travel, the first thing I do once I step into the hotel room is to check out the bathroom. You can tell a lot about a hotel by the way its bathrooms are furnished. Is it splendorous, equipped with a bathtub and everything one may need? Or is it scantily clad with just the bare necessities? While I can make do with sparse facilities, I love luxurious bathrooms. Those are the ones where every detail is paid attention to, from the way the towels are rolled to the quality of toiletries they provide. All this effort goes into making the bathroom the ultimate sanctuary, a place where we can wash away the day’s troubles. With homes—and therefore bathrooms— getting smaller, we may not have the space for five-star luxury, but we can, with some tips and tricks, transform our bathrooms into a relaxing oasis (p10). Since this month’s issue casts the spotlight on beautiful bathrooms, we’ve made sure to include features on bathroom essentials. Are rainshowers right for you (p16)? What are the bathroom accessories that enhance the finishing touch (p28)? And bathroom sinks can be pretty too. Just check out our gallery on page 42! If you’re on the lookout for unique accessories to dress up your home, go off the beaten track with us as we discover homeware hideouts in Tiong Bahru (p22). Check out every issue’s Local Delights for more unexpected surprises!

COVERSTORY
5 Design Tips to Maximise Your Small Bathroom It might be one of the smaller spaces in your home, but the bathroom is the perfect place to relax, unwind, and wash all your troubles away. We show you five ways to make the most out of your small bathroom and turn it into the ultimate sanctuary. BY LEONG PEI XIN
PLAN YOUR BATHROOM LAYOUT
TOP:
Do you have a big family, where everyone jostles for the bathroom every morning?

Then create partitions to separate the toilet from the shower area, so that more

people can use the space simultaneously. Sliding shower screens or shower curtains are both great alternatives for bathrooms that cannot accommodate swinging doors. Shower curtains can also be pushed to the side when not in use, saving you space and opening up the bathroom at the same time! If you have segregated your bathroom into different zones, make the TIP
flooring continuous by choosing the same tiles or colour. This makes the bathroom look bigger in the mind’s eye. Some recommend placing the sink in the corner to clear up the walking aisle. On the other hand, if the aisle is your only option, just thin the wash basin cabinet towards the end to take up less space. There are no hard and fast rules as to how you should plan your bathroom layout. What matters is to plan a layout that works best for your household needs!
TOP: CleanLine shower channel (price upon request) from Geberit & GROHE Rapid SL concealed cistern system for WC ($458) from Grohe
In a small bathroom, you’ll want to clear up space for movement. Choose bathroom products with a compact body and streamlined shape, such as a concealed cistern. By installing the cistern inside the wall and only revealing the flush actuator plate, a concealed cistern keeps everything nicely hidden away, creating a clean, elegant appearance. You can also play around with the placement of the toilet bowl to create an illusion of space. For example, Grohe offers floor-standing and wall-mounted versions. Instead of a clunky shower channel, update the look with the Geberit CleanLine floor-even shower channel. Super sleek in design and made for easy maintenance, its open outlet surface also prevents the concealed buildup of deposits.
TIP
Curved wash basins offer more space for movement than angular alternatives.

PLAY WITH LIGHTING AND COLOURS You know what they say: Light colours make a room appear more spacious. To create a spalike atmosphere in a small bathroom, choose soothing colours in neutral tones, such as cream, warm taupe, and white. Don’t fret if you’re more of a colour lover though! Bold choices, such as the use of a striking paint color or wallpaper on an accent wall, draw attention and add vibrancy to the bathroom space. Also, play up bathroom features (such as the mirror or sink area) with ambient lighting to create a relaxing yet glamorous atmosphere. If you can, have your contractor enlarge the bathroom window or choose a window panel that lets natural light in to illuminate the bathroom during the day. Little details can make a huge TIP
difference. Add liveliness with some potted plants or a vase of flowers.

MAKE USE OF STORAGE Clever storage is key when it comes to making the most out of a space. Think open, open, open! Leave floor space as clear as possible and make use of vertical wall space instead. For example, you can use overhead storage to store towels. If you’re renovating, create storage space in the walls with recessed shelving. Shower niches allow for more storage without infringing on the room’s square footage. Otherwise, corner shelves are great for utilising under-used corner space as well.
TIP
If your shelving is open, reduce visual clutter by arranging your items neatly. Mirror cabinets are a great way to multi-task your storage, and if you prefer more mobile storage, consider freestanding racks with a see-through body (e.g. grid shelving), which maintains visibility and keeps the bathroom

CHOOSE THE RIGHT TILES AND WALLS In high-humidity spaces like the bathroom, it’s essential to choose waterresistant materials for the floors and walls. Ceramic, marble, and stone tiles are all excellent choices. Protect your tiles with a water repellant sealer, and make sure the floor is acid-washable to withstand heavy-duty cleaning supplies. To make the bathroom look larger, choose larger tiles with subtle patterns for unified look that doesn’t chop up floor lines.
TIP
Don’t forget to place anti-slip floor mats if you have elderly family members living with you! As for the walls, the same waterproof rule applies, but because they don’t need to be specially made to carry heavy weight, you get a lot more freedom to play around. Choices abound, from a simple wash of paint to cementitious walls, a myriad selection of tiles to catch your fancy.

Singing in the Rain What are the different showerheads available? And which is the best for your new home? If you’re confused by all the options out there, fret not—here’s a timely shopping guide. BY LEONG PEI XIN

Due to the space limitations many Singapore homes face, showerheads have become the practical solution to small bathrooms. Compared to bathtubs which take up floor space, showers are mounted on the wall or ceiling. Many modern showerheads also come outfitted with fancy features to make your daily showering an enjoyable affair. Let’s take a look at the types of showerheads available these days!

FIXED SHOWER Fixed showers are great for saving space as they are compact and have minimal parts. Many brands offer shower arms of different lengths to cater to various bathroom sizes, but since the position of the showerhead is fixed once installed, flexibility is limited.

We’ve touched on the broad categories, but in order for you to make the smart choice for your family, here's a more thorough comparison across the four types of showerheads. All models are from German label Hansgrohe:
IS A BIGGER SHOWERHEAD ALWAYS BETTER? It all depends on personal preferences and lifestyle suitability. Overhead showers, especially rainshowers, tend to be bigger as it cover a wider spray area for that luxurious, standing-under-the-rain feel. Hand showers, on the other hand, come in a compact size, making it easier to hold and manoeuvre around. That being said, some bigger showerheads can have fewer nozzles due to the design. 23 renonation.sg It’s no wonder then, that one gets a gallery feel upon stepping into the store. Each brand is allocated its own display area, but what adds to the eye candy appeal is the fact that many of the items are simply works of art. Inspired by 18th and 19th century designs, French brand Astier de Villatte elevates crockery to art collectible status with handmade terracotta tableware glazed in a signature milky finish. Equally collection-worthy is Burleigh Pottery from England. Its teatime earthenware is handmade with a traditional form of decoration known as transfer printing, producing delicate designs to take your breath away. Strangelets is the go-to place for unusual bric-abrac, including Ostheimer wooden toys with German heritage. Whether you’re looking for quirky gifts or one-of-a-kind designs, a visit to Strangelets will most likely result in a stay longer than you expected!

An architect by training, Katherine envisioned a one-stop shop where clients can get renovation and furnishing services under the same roof, and this shared space certainly facilitates that. Kanarien is also a company with a cause. Katherine wanted Kanarien to be an avenue for giving back to society, so all profits generated go to charity and the underprivileged!

Turn Your Watering Can into a Vintage Flower Planter Add flair into plain décor with intricate designs that look exquisitely painted. Angie Ong from Angie’s Napkin Decoupage Shop shows you how to transform an old watering can into a beautiful vintage garden accessory.
WHAT IS DECOUPAGE?
WHAT YOU NEED
"
Decoupage is the art of decorating an object by gluing coloured paper cut-outs, paper napkins or specially printed decoupage papers onto it in combination with special paint effects... the final layer is sealed with multiple layers of varnish until the 'stuck on' appearance disappears and the result looks like painting or inlay work.

Remove 2 layers of napkin, leaving only the topmost layer with the image. Stick the napkin onto the watering can and use a squeegee to remove all creases. Repeat for the other side.
Sand off the white and cream acrylic paint along the edges, to create an aged look.

5 Fun Water Play Ideas You Can Do in Your Bathroom One of the best sensory play experiences you can offer to your toddlers is water play. Why? It’s cheap, versatile and easy to set up! If you don’t have a bath tub in your bathroom, that’s fine too. You can buy a small plastic tub as a substitute. Here are ideas to get you started. BY MICHELLE ANG
FOAM AWAY You can never go wrong with water and bubbles. Add body soap into the tub and whip the water to create bubble foam. You can either use your hands to whip the water back and forth, or use a whisk or blender to hasten the process. Once your tub is all ‘foamed-up’, let your child engage in some free play and join in the fun! Make your child’s play more meaningful by adding different objects into the tub. Add heavy and light objects or toys to show them the concept of density. Toss in some empty bottles, cups, scoops and containers and give them tasks such as scooping and filling the containers. You can even poke holes in a bottle and ask them to fill it up. Watch how your child problem solve and find ways to fill the leaking bottle.
EXTRA TIP
A small amount of corn starch acts as a stabilizer and helps make the foam last longer.
41 renonation.sg
D E F RO S T I NG T I M E The night before, freeze up a few of your child’s plastic toys or figurines in a block of ice. You may want to ask them for permission first if they are very protective of their toys. You can use the ice collection tray if the toy fits (Lego blocks work well for this). If it’s a bigger toy, you can put the toy in a clear plastic bag of water. Once frozen, bring it out and give them a mission to save their toys that are now stuck in a block of ice! Provide some tools like forks and teaspoons for them to chisel and break the ice with. As your child tries to ‘save’ the toys, they learn the value of patience, the properties of water, and develop their problem-solving skills as they experiment on different ways to break the ice. Add a splash of colour to your EXTRA TIP
frozen iced toys by adding in a drop of food coloring in the water before freezing them.
T OY WA S H If your child loves cars, get his toy cars into the tub. If your daughter loves dolls, get her dolls in for a bath with her. This play works best for plastic toys, not for fabric toys. Give them sponges, bristle brushes or used toothbrushes to scrub and clean the nooks and crannies. You can show them how to ‘wash’ the toys in a proper or organized manner. This teaches them how to take proper care of their own items and personal hygiene.
H AV E A F I S H O U T Fill the tub with random items that sink and float. Marbles, Lego blocks, flower petals, ice cubes, sea shells, the list goes on! There is only one rule to this game, they can only use the scoop provided to ‘fish’ the items out. You can use a ladle from the kitchen or a netted scoop for this. If you have older kids, you may increase the difficulty level by giving them a smaller spoon or
S H O O T E M ’ D OW N
chopsticks instead. For this activity, you will need a water gun (either Make it more exciting by setting a EXTRA TIP
time limit or specific criteria. For example, only ‘fish’ the items that sink or only ‘fish’ the items that are blue.
the plastic toy gun or the foam types). Prepare some empty bottles and cans as targets and line them up. Get your child to shoot them down and see how fast he can do so. Take it up a notch and place the targets further away from them, or change the targets to smaller items.
Most of these activities do not take much planning or cost, the key is to let them have fun and ask questions to provoke them to think. Have a splashing good time!

TO DA R R E N Q: Tell us your total budget for the home renovation. A: $60k excluding furnishings. Q: Why did you choose this concept for your home? A: I want the raw and simple feel for my home. Q: What features did you request for to achieve the look you wanted? A: I requested for the use of cement screed everywhere in my home where applicable. The choice of furniture also plays an important role to create the overall feel. Q: Which part of your renovated home do you like the most? A: I like my living room the most. Q: Were there any concessions you had to make due to budget constraints? A: The flooring. If I had a bigger budget, I would have hacked the flooring and gone for something that fit my Rustic theme better.
49 renonation.sg Q: Which part of the renovation was the most expensive to execute? A: The kitchen, as the laminate for the kitchen cabinets was specially chosen to complement the cement screed kitchen walls.
T O S PAC E CONC E P T S Q: What was the design concept of this home, and how was it portrayed in the renovation? A: The design concept is cement feel cum retro. We used cement screed on the living room walls and built the TV console with hollow cement blocks. The kitchen wall is done with cement screed without any painting to create the rustic feel.
Q: What are the elements that constitute the bulk of the renovation costs? A: Renovating the entire kitchen, plastering the living room wall, and the brick wall for the study room. Q: What is the most unique aspect of this project? A: The owner is very open to every idea proposed and daring enough to try new things. That makes it very easy for us to come up with creative ideas.

TO DAV I D Q: Tell us your total budget for the home renovation. A: Our budget was around $40-50k. Q: Why did you choose this concept for your home? A: My wife and I didn't have a specific theme for our home but we knew what material selection we wanted to go for. We wanted our home to have an open feel with lots of wood, and from there our concept took shape. Q: What features did you request for to achieve the look you wanted? A: We wanted to have a kitchen island in the kitchen, but were worried about the space constraint. Fortunately we managed to pull it off in the end. Q: Which part of your renovated home do you like the most? A: We love the kitchen as well as the walkin wardrobe. Q: Were there any concessions you had to make due to budget constraints? A: We originally planned for a much longer kitchen island which was also extendable. But as it would cost more, we decided to go with a shorter length.
51 renonation.sg
T O AC E S PAC E DE SIG N Q: What was the design concept of this home? How was it portrayed in the renovation? A: The theme was Industrial. It can be seen in various areas: the woodgrain veneer flooring, black tube electrical casing, woodgrain Kompac-plus table top as well as the cabinets and walk-in wardrobe decked in woodgrain laminate. Q: Which part of the renovation was the most expensive to execute? A: The kitchen island with the dining table was the single most expensive item. The homeowner wanted a high table for food preparation as well as a dining table to maximise the space of the kitchen. The island also comes with 3 hidden high chairs on 1 side and an open storage cabinet on the other side.
Q: What are the elements that constitute the bulk of the renovation costs? A: The carpentry, as it was a major part of the renovation. Q: What are the most unique aspects of this project? A: One would be the kitchen island as it was specially designed and customised to the homeowners' requirements. Another would be the walk-in wardrobe, which is built in between two rooms for the shared use by both rooms. Another unique point is that instead of doors, the entry to each room is covered by a wooden sliding door that doubles as a drawing blackboard. Overall, this project features quite a few unique aspects that seem impossible in modern HDB flats.

TO E R IC Q: Tell us your total budget for the home renovation. A: $30k. We factored in our intention to demolish some walls and rebuild some parts of the carpentry to get this amount for our budget. Q: Why did you choose this concept for your home? A: Because of our belief in Feng Shui, we focused on the colours that were beneficial to us rather than a design theme. For example, the colours we're advised to choose for the living room are blue, black and grey. With these colours in mind, we ended up with a modern industrial feel to our home. We also wanted a hotel concept for our bedroom as my wife (Joice) and I love to travel. As hotel rooms are always great to sleep in, we wanted to have something similar for our own bedroom! Q: What features did you request for to achieve the look you wanted? A: There wasn't a main feature that we requested for, but we did want to retain elements of the house that are duplicated around the house. These are the subway tiles and craftstone, as well as what we call the black frames.
Black frames are a motif around our house—in the shoe cabinets, half-length glass walls, display cabinets, and even our dining table and poster art! Q: Which part of your renovated home do you like the most? A: Being collectors, our favourite part definitely has to be the two big display cabinets used for our display collection. There's one with a cleaner design in the living room and a multi-functional one in the study. That being said, we have to give special mention to the feature wall that incorporates the subway tiles that we like. Q: Were there any concessions you had to make due to budget constraints? A: Yes. Even though we didn't like the original tiles in the toilets and the balconies, we ended up being able to renovate only the master toilet.
53 renonation.sg
T O I N S PI R E I D G ROU P Q: How was the design concept portrayed in the renovation? A: The concept revolves around Marvel toys as the owners like to collect them. Hence we made use of lighting effects to showcase their collections and add a visual impact. Q: Which part of the renovation was the most expensive to execute? A: The display shelving using special material and glass was the most extravagant part of the renovation. Q: What are the elements that constitute the bulk of the renovation costs? A: The bulk of the expenses was spent on avant-garde materials to enhance the value of the house.

Know Your ID: Dyel Design BY LEONG PEI XIN
Speak to a homeowner who’s got renovation done and he or she will tell you that no hasty decision should be made about the interior designer (ID) you choose. The list of criteria is so long that it’s almost like searching for your life partner. Not only do they need to be industry qualified and competent, they will also need to have the right chemistry with you in order to understand your ideas. After all, it’s their job to translate your visions of a dream home to reality. And—they still have to be within budget or it’s a heartbreak at the end of the day. In this month’s issue, we have a chat with DIANA FROM DYEL DESIGN. A stint with a high-profile local fashion designer sparked Diana’s interest in design when she was just a newbie in the working world, and now this bubbly lady helms an ID firm with a group of capable and reliable professionals.
ID Firm: Dyel Design Address: 33 Ubi Ave 3 #06-08 Vertex Tower B, Singapore 408868 Tel: 6922 6399 Web: www.dyeldesign.com
» TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT DYEL DESIGN. Our company was established in 2005. We are a serviceoriented team that always listens to our clients’ needs, what their lifestyles are like, and then brainstorm a design that best fits their style of living. I always believe that we have to think in their shoes and look at the project as if their house is our own. When you do that, you are sure to produce the best design for each home. The most satisfying outcome is when our customers eventually become our friends. » WHAT IS THE MOST EXCITING HOME RENOVATION PROJECT YOU’VE WORKED ON? That must have been 7 to 8 years back, when a client gave us total expressive freedom to design his new house. With zero budget limit and only one assigned theme: resort style, we took down quite a few walls to open up the flow and used a lot of glass elements in the house, which even include the bathrooms and kitchen! While this concept is now considered ordinary, the use of lots of glass elements was actually considered a novelty at that time. As a designer you are often restricted by the budget and other practical considerations, so this renovation project was considered the most exciting for me.

» WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST COMMON BATHROOM DECORATING MISTAKES THAT YOU'VE ENCOUNTERED SO FAR? One, placing the vanity cabinet right next to the glass shower screen, such that there is no hand space in between to reach in and clean. I’ve seen many toilets with such designs and the area between the cabinet and shower screen gets so dirty that it looks really ugly. Two, door positions that are not ideal. If your bathroom has a shower screen, you or your ID need to consider the door layout before installing the shower screen. In some bathrooms you have to close the shower screen door in order to get out of the bathroom, hence interrupting the flow of movement.
» TELL US ABOUT THE TIME WHEN YOU WERE FACED WITH A CHALLENGE IN RENOVATING A BATHROOM, AND HOW YOU SOLVED THE ISSUE. I always face the challenge of space when it comes to renovating the bathroom! (laughs) Bathrooms are so small nowadays that a lot of my customers come to me asking for a bigger bathroom, especially the shower area, which they often find insufficient. So we have to design alternatives, including building the shower area outside of the bathroom, in a separate room or even in the middle of the passageway. For HDB flats, approval is needed for bathroom renovation works. We have to submit detailed diagrams in our proposals to HDB, and the process can be quite tedious. But while HDB is stringent, we have had approvals before. The key is to think through the designs thoroughly, and take into consideration practical feasibility and aesthetic value. It all boils down to the knowledge you have. » WHAT IS THE ONE ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE TO HOMEOWNERS ON THE DECORATING OF THEIR HOMES? My number one advice is to be very, very clear on their chosen concept. Before engaging an ID, homeowners should do their homework and come with a realistic budget.

think that everything in their house should be made of wood. This is certainly not practical in a country where humidity and termites can turn a 100% wood house into a potentially problematic home. Despite the confusion, construction materials have absolutely no impact on Feng Shui. Remember, it is direction, location and the Qi map that counts and not what kind of material your house is made of. Furniture placement may play a small part in helping to improve the overall Qi of a house but the type of furniture or decoration has no impact on the overall Feng Shui of your house. Feng Shui is about the Qi in the environment and the house, not about your personal taste. So, collect whatever furniture you like and let your preference be the judge of what goes into your home, not Feng Shui. Other than choosing the furniture and interior decorations that you LIKE, another subject which you shouldn’t be too overly worried about actually concerns the Main Door of your home itself. In Feng Shui, the location and facing direction of the Main Door of your home is the primary focus and not the actual door itself. By all means, have whatever style or type of door you desire because it will not affect the form of the Main Door of the house. Trusting a Robot in Your Home BY IN-HOUSE BLOGGER, THE BOSS MAN for the full review experience visit: www.renonation.sg/blog/231/trusting_a_ robot_in_2_homes
Robotic vacuum cleaners are common these days, but not many of you have one at home nor even tried once. Questions that come to our mind when considering one: How intelligent are these robots? And are they capable for efficient cleaning of your home without physically being there? We had the opportunity of testing out the latest model by Samsung - The Powerbot VR9000. By staying in a 3-room HDB Flat, cleaning was relatively easier, but still as dreaded. We had all the while been using canister vacuum cleaners, and only recently changed to the handheld vacuum cleaners. Hence my opinions in this review will be as a first-time user of a robotic vacuum cleaner. And to make this review even more interesting, I'm a bit of a clean freak. Not OCD though.
KEY POINTS
• Is the movement and navigation accurate?
• Does the Point Cleaning work?
(Basic expectations of a robotic VC.)
(Human overriding control must be available)
• Will the machine go over humps, uneven surfaces?
• Does the virtual guard work?
(It needs to know how to navigate and

FIRST IMPRESSION You can tell from its design that it is powerful, packed with technology that works, and doesn't confuse a homeowner with these features. For a start, the manual charging is as easy as charging a phone - just place both the charging dock and the Powerbot together with its charging pins aligned. There is little to no strength required.

suggestion I have would be an ability to track and differentiate the debris to vacuum, and items to avoid (floor mats especially). With that ability, the bot will be able to move forward towards debris instead of just by going through the systematic preset routes. Basically this feature I'm asking for, is to have a human brain and a pair of eyes on the bot that intelligently does its job. (Yes, I'm not realistic for this aspect.) Perhaps there already is a technology of such, but that also means it comes with a hefty price. Will anyone be willing to pay then?
IS THIS ROBOT WORTH BEING YOUR PART OF YOUR FAMILY? Max clean Cleans until the battery is depleted
It is definitely suitable for families who are looking to clean their house daily, without sweating it yourself. Especially if you are to leave your home without anyone in, relying on the Powerbot is ideal. Let it do the cleaning while the house is vacant saves plenty of time. And when it's running low in power, it will automatically return to charge by itself. What I've learnt from using a robotic vacuum cleaner, is to always remove the smaller items or accessories from the floor before you start the vacuum.
This will allow an effective cleaning from the Powerbot. Manual clean You can move POWERbot with the remote control to clean the desired spot.
On the other hand if you are looking to do thorough cleaning of your floors, I'd say not a single robotic vacuum cleaner is suitable for you. At the present moment, no robotic vacuum cleaners are able to reach the low corners of your TV console or sofa. As a matter of fact, just use canister vacuum cleaners for those. SO WHAT IS YOUR STYLE OF CLEANING?
