EDITOR'SNOTE

Issue 10 - June 2015

We’re in the middle of 2015 and I’m curious as to how many of us have managed to achieve what we set out to do at the start of the year. Often, we’re so busy that carving out time for family, friends and personal goals just seems like an insurmountable feat. It’s a good thing then that more and more companies are allowing their employees to work from home, giving more flexibility to our work week. We can’t deny that we fall prey to distractions more at home than under the boss’s nose, so stay productive with this checklist we’ve created just for you on designing an efficient home office (p12). We hit the pavement to sniff out places that are lesser-known but have so much to offer. On our radar this month is Bukit Timah and we weren’t disappointed with the selection of home décor and furnishing gems we found. Turn to page 24 for the lowdown. So tell us, are you one who sees the glass as half empty or half full? Do you have only half a year left, or half a year more to do the things you want, create the life you dream of and spend time with people who enrich your life? Bottoms up to work-life balance!

5 Tips to Design an Efficient Home Office More and more of us are working from home, and that calls for a well thought-out workspace. After all, if we're going to be spending hours there at a stretch, it has to be comfortable and still remain conducive for work. Design the workspace of your dreams with these five guiding questions. BY LEONG PEI XIN

WHERE IS THE BEST SPACE FOR A HOME OFFICE? Your home office can be anywhere in the house—a whole room, an unused corner, empty wall space or even a closet. When deciding on where to set up your spanking new home office, think about the kind of environment you work best in: Is it a quiet setting or one with a lot of traffic flow? Are you one who is easily distracted by your surroundings or who can work amidst chaos? Also take into consideration whether you’re sharing the space with other family members. If so, carve out a bigger area; an added benefit is that you can share storage space as well! Set up shop near a source of natural TIP Image by Inspire ID Group

light such as a window, as nature and greenery rest the eyes and stimulate the mind.

Once your location is settled, you can start planning the use of the space. If your space is in a corner, look for L-shaped desk arrangements to maximise available space. Even if you don’t have much room, you can still create a cosy workspace that meets your needs with some planning.

Magnetic Whiteboard in White ($59.90) from kikki.K

Have you heard the saying “a cluttered desk reflects a cluttered mind”? An organised workspace helps you think better, so keep your desk surface clear and be smart with storage. Consider the amount of space you require for the kind of work you do. For example, graphic designers, architects and craftsmen require several work stations for different stages in their workflow. This might mean carving out a wider work area to accommodate more than one desk. Store files and materials you often reach Balance Alcove (from $1,400) by Content by Conran from Dream Interiors

TIP

for close by, and keep others in low, harderto-reach storage. If you have computer and media equipment, use boxes to keep unruly wires in order. And if you have space to spare, why not use a vision board to remind yourself of your goals and stay inspired? kikki.K’s Magnetic Whiteboard keeps important information at eye level.

13 renonation.sg

WHAT ARE YOUR STORAGE NEEDS?

14 renonation.sg

HOW DO YOU ACHIEVE ADEQUATE LIGHTING? For visual tasks such as reading, writing and working on your computer, you need task lighting for optimal illumination. This reduces eye strain from staring at the computer screen for long periods of time, something we all do when engrossed in our work (or games—don't deny!). But task lighting is bright and can cause glare, so be sure to balance it out with ambient lighting. Mounted task lights save space, but go with adjustable if you prefer the option to move around as you work. Or just get the 33347 Square LED Remote-controlled Ceiling Light ($480) & 33344 Round LED Remote-controlled Ceiling Light ($480) from Philips Singapore

best of both worlds with remote-controlled lighting such as Philips Ceiling Lights. Adjust light levels with its four tunable settings from Warm White to Cool Daylight.

TIP

As a general guide, 100 Lux of task light is appropriate for work spaces where simple visual tasks are performed, and up to 1000 lux for more complex visual tasks.

HOW DO YOU PLAN AN ERGONOMIC OFFICE SET-UP? We’re all guilty of slouching at our desk as the day goes on, and the antidote just might be an ergonomic chair that provides good support. Whatever the budget for your home office, we recommend devoting the lion’s share to one for the sake of your health. Desks nowadays have thoughtful features such as adjustable height and rounded edges for comfort and circulation. Sitting too near the computer screen causes neck, shoulder and eye strain, so your desk should be big enough for your laptop or computer. Also, make sure your eyes are Herman Miller Embody (from $2,619) & Herman Miller Aeron (from $1,999) from Xtra

level with an imaginary line about two to three inches below the top of the monitor so you don’t strain your neck.

TIP

Here's a quick and easy way to gauge the appropriate distance. Sit back in your chair and lift your arms straight, your screen should be an arm’s length away.

DO YOU HAVE KIDS OR PETS?

Ever had your pet saunter into your home office like a boss? We're guessing you can't bear to keep your furkid out too! To accommodate their presence, provide a pet bed where they can lounge and not pose too much of a distraction. Having them around also helps when you’re stressed out! Young kids can be quite demanding of your attention as well, so work around their schedule. Do the work that requires absolute Safari Square Table and Chairs Set ($165) from Kids Haven

focus during their nap time, bedtime and school hours.

TIP

Have a back-up plan though. If Junior really wants your company, have something to keep him occupied such as a toy box or a mini desk where he can get homework done while you work.

Working at home comes with a lot of benefits, and being able to design the home office your way is definitely one of them. What’s more, by making your work station an inviting space, you’ll be raring to start work every morning!

HOMEHUB

No Desk Jockey We might spend a lot of our everyday lives sitting at one, but how much do you know about the humble desk and its colourful history? And are you familiar with the different types of desks available these days? Read on to find out! BY LEONG PEI XIN

The first writing desks were built in the 14th century. From bureaus to secretary desks to metal desks, the unassuming desk encapsulates the ever-evolving design aesthetic of eras from then on.

FIRST, A BIT OF HISTORY: • Desks were a symbol of status in many societies. Before the 17th century, desks were found only in palaces and places of worship! • It was only way later, till the Industrial Revolution and after the Second World War, that a boom in office workers created a demand for mass-made modular desks. • American architect Frank Lloyd Wright revolutionised the use of only wood in carpentry by designing furniture that matched the building it would be housed in. Plywood, plastic and tubular steel became commonly used in desk construction.

DID YOU KNOW?

• The word ‘desk’ originated from the Modern Latin word desca, which means “table to write on”. • The Resolute desk which US President Barack Obama uses in the Oval Office was gifted to America by Queen Victoria of England and made from the timbers of the British Resolute ship.

Finding one for your home: Today, there are lots of options when it comes to desks. You can even opt for antique-inspired desks should you want some of that olden-day flair to your abode. In space-starved Singapore, finding the perfect desk can be tricky, especially if you are already borrowing your workspace from existing living areas. We think that it always depends on the way your space is planned; there’s never a one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to things like home décor!

GL ASS TABLES A glass table is quite the hot favourite and we can certainly see why. Its transparent nature makes any room look spacious and it’s easy to clean to boot. Desks made of glass and steel will look right at home if your home already has a modern vibe going on. However, do balance out any glare this reflective surface can cause with appropriate lighting TOP: Fiam Rialto L by CRS Fiam ($4,575) from Space Furniture

(see our Cover Story for tips!).

21 renonation.sg

FOLDABLE DESKS Great for storing away when not in use, lightweight foldable desks are also a mobile solution. You can set up your home office anywhere you wish—the laundry room if you have guests over or with your kids if you need to oversee their playtime. FUN FACT: There's even a foldable cardboard table created by a team of New Zealand designers. The Refold weighs only 6.5kg and can be folded several ways. The only thing is to take care not to place it on damp surfaces, it’s cardboard after all!

BOTTOM: Kartell Spoon Table Small by Antonio Citterio with Toan Nguyen (from $2,595) from Space Furniture

Lightweight and slim, this desk has a honeycomb aluminium structural top with a knee closing mechanism to simplify folding of the top.

L-SHAPED DESKS Also called corner desks, these fit snugly into those perpendicular corners that previously were just neglected or underused. Their low height and wide girth also make them ideal for spaces with sloping ceilings, such as attics or under stairways. Most L-shaped desks tend to have lots of drawer storage anyway, so the lack of vertical storage in such a small space poses little issue. LEFT: Lisse AE-40-9 L-shaped Desk ($999) from Amercis Office Furniture

22 renonation.sg

STANDING DESKS With all the talk about how sitting down for long hours harms our health, standing desks have become the new du jour. These height-adjustable desks cater to your choice of movement as you sit or stand. The only con is that such desks are so sleek they don’t come with storage, so you’ll have to prepare your own storage solution such as bookshelves (check out Flavour of The Month for ideas). LEFT: Kangaroo Junior Standing Desk ($949) from Ideal Workspace

Powered by software that you can access through the built-in touchscreen, this smart desk remembers your sitting and standing preferences and adjusts accordingly. TOP: Stir Kinetic Desk M1 (USD $2,990 including shipping) from Stir

Whether you’re a minimalist with a preference for sleek design or simply loving the new desk innovations, with all the options available on the market, you’ll be sure to find something that is a good fit for your home!

From their extensive collection of vintage paraphernalia (which multitask as wall décor) to upholstered couches and chairs from the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, every piece is lovingly curated. The lovely owners Shenn, Eunice and Phoebe source for vintage finds that are still in good shape and ship them back to Singapore. With a keen eye for quality finds, they are most drawn to pieces that tell a story or have been forgotten. “We like vintage furniture with character and are a bit quirky. We don’t seek perfect pieces as those that are a bit imperfect are actually the ones that have the best stories to tell,” shares Shenn. Stay focused if you head there for their vintage furniture offerings, because there’s a high chance you’ll get waylaid by the baked goods that are too delectable to resist.

Angie Ong from Angie’s Napkin Decoupage Shop shows you how to transform a plain white lamp shade into a beautiful decoration that your friends will be demanding to know where you purchased it from!

WHAT IS DECOUPAGE?

"

Decoupage is the art of decorating an object by gluing coloured paper cut-outs, paper napkins or specially printed decoupage papers onto it in combination with special paint effects... the final layer is sealed with multiple layers of varnish until the 'stuck on' appearance disappears and the result looks like painting or inlay work. Angie Ong, Napkin Decoupage Shop Interesting, right? We love how decoupage gives a totally new look to existing products in our home,

Dress up plain walls with interesting textures and tessellations that add interest to your interior. For a relaxed, intimate feel, go for earthy colours and patterns inspired by nature. The honeycomb pattern, for example, has become very popular with homeowners, as its versatility lends itself to a myriad of decorative uses in home furnishings. Soon Bee Huat introduces the newest addition to their tile collection, the Keramos series—a new floor and wall collection ideal for creating warm and welcoming cocoons of spaces. Enjoy the embrace of nature with a wave of earthy colours presented on cement-inspired surfaces, ranging from deep and intense to creams and traditional terracotta. Be it a cosy corner or an exhibitive splash of feature wall, Keramos can be installed in any area of the home where a homely effect is desired. In addition, tiles with a regular shape like the hexagonal Keramos have the potential for creative expression. They can be combined into different patterns to create a whole rainbow of effects, especially if decorative tiles are thrown into the mix. Blend creative expression with soft sophistication using Decorio, the aptly named decorative version of the Keramos series. Characterised by geometric motifs and stylised floral designs, Decorio is eclectic and kaleidoscopic, sure to add a bloom of whimsical charm to your walls.

Timeless Beauty

CraftStone® Old Used Bricks

If you find yourself drawn to the rustic stone wall, you'll be pleased to know that you can bring the beauty of stone into your home with CraftStone®, manufacturer of architectural cast stone. Unlike natural stone which is expensive to mine and heavy to work with, CraftStone® bricks are a mixture of cement and lightweight aggregate for easy installation on walls. And because the moulds used are cast from real stone, you get the most realistic, authentic appearance that natural stone is meant to have. Take the Cottage Bricks range. These slim bricks retain the characteristic

hairline grooves and wire-cut ridges of traditional hand-made bricks, and its uniform shape lends a refined air, especially in light colours. The Old Used Bricks collection, on the other hand, has a coarser finishing intended to mimic the brick underlay of plastered walls, making it an excellent choice for homeowners looking for that raw, industrial edge. Other than matching the warmth and prestige of natural stone at a friendlier price tag, the appeal of CraftStone® manufactured stone veneers lies in the selection range and versatility. CraftStone® carries a wide selection of over 80 types of stone and

brick veneers, certain to suit homes of any style. The distinctive Vintage Ledgestone collection offers a wide range of colours ranging from warm to cool tones. In addition, while natural stone may have restrictions contractors will have to respect, CraftStone® veneers can be installed over brick, concrete, block, sheet metal or wood.

Established in 1997, CraftStone® has consistently delivered high quality stone veneers to local and overseas markets including Japan, Europe, America and Australia. TO JA M E S Q: Tell us your total budget for the home renovation. A: $58,000 excluding furnishings. Q: Why did you choose this concept for your home? A: I wanted a white Scandinavian concept which has a cosy feel and which makes our home seem bigger. And to accommodate my vintage findings, we have added some vintage ideas to the concept. In summary, I had a Scandinavian + Vintage concept. Q: What features did you request for to achieve the look you wanted? A: I requested for brick walls, an old style window grill wall divider, a barn door and a mosaic dining table. Q: Which part of your renovated home do you like the most? A: It would be the kitchen and balcony. Q: Were there any concessions you had to make due to budget constraints? A: No.

55 renonation.sg Q: Which part of the renovation was the most expensive to execute? A: Probably the kitchen as we knocked down the whole kitchen wall and came up with a new layout to make the place look spacious. The living room also comes with a green divider, which is custom-made and meant to portray the vibes of the '70s and '80s.

T O S PAC E DE F I N E Q: How was the design concept portrayed in the renovation? A: The concept is based on the theme that the homeowner loves, with elements of vintage and Scandinavian touches.

Q: What are the elements that constitute the bulk of the renovation costs? A: I would say every minor detail in the house. Q: What is the most unique aspect of this project? A: As an artist I would say, without passion, creativity or innovation, it won't drive us further.

HDB EM @Bedok Reservoir

TO J I N DE R Q: Tell us your total budget for the home renovation. A: $90k. Q: Why did you choose Modern Zen for your home? A: We chose it because we felt that the Modern Zen concept will appeal to our young children. We wanted them to get adjusted fast, especially since it's a new home for them. Personally my wife and I also prefer a modern look as compared to a more classic or retro look. Q: What features did you request for to achieve the look you wanted? A: We wanted a new master room with the common bathroom attached within, and also we wanted to combine the original master room with the third bedroom to make it bigger for my three boys to share. To achieve this, six walls had to be hacked and erected. We also wanted our toilets to be segmented so that each section could be used independently. Some of the contractors we had spoken to said that we could never achieve the plan we had for our home, but Ryan did it and we are proud of and pleased with the results.

Q: Which part of your renovated home do you like the most? A: My bar. It is a standout feature in my new home and many of my guests are attracted to it each time they visit. This part of my home has brought many people together whenever I host spontaneous gatherings. Q: Were there any concessions you had to make due to budget constraints? A: I would say minimal, as we achieved everything we wanted with our budget. To save cost, we even bought some things overseas. This allowed us handsome savings which we channeled to buy better quality stuff for our home. We do wish, however, that our kitchen was bigger as we wanted to have a dryer and a dishwasher but were limited by space constraints.

57 renonation.sg Q: Which part of the renovation was the most expensive to execute? A: The owners requested for two en-suite bathrooms for their house. This was "expensive" as a lot of efforts were put into getting the design approved from the relevant authorities.

T O U R BA N H A BI TAT Q: How was Modern Zen portrayed in the renovation? A: The colour scheme is earthy and serene with lots of wood furnishings to bring a sense of nature into the home. We kept things up-to-date by also having cool, polished surfaces such as glass and metal fixtures.

Q: What are the elements that constitute the bulk of the renovation costs? A: Carpentry works stood for at least 35% of the renovation works. Q: What is the most unique aspect of this project? A: Two en-suite toilets, which is a personal achievement as none of my peers or subcontractors have gotten it done before. The bar counter is also worth mentioning as it really brought a lot of joy and bonding time with friends for the clients.

TO M IC H A E L Q: Tell us your total budget for the home renovation. A: About $100k. Q: Why did you choose the Modern/ Minimalist concept for your home? A: We opted for the Modern/Minimalist Concept as the theme as it provides us with a bright, spacious and cosy living environment that is done up with light wood and colors. Q: What features did you request for to achieve the look you wanted? A: We requested for a simplistic feature wall, cabinets and cupboards that are modern and will not go out of style. Q: Which part of your renovated home do you like the most? A: The hall display cabinet where my wife's collection of Precious Moments figurines are displayed as well as the dining area which has unique dining lights complemented by a trendy dining table made of Caesarstone. Q: Were there any concessions you had to make due to budget constraints? A: No concessions were made as we wanted to have the best installed/ fabricated.

T O T H E I N T E R IOR L A B Q: How was the concept portrayed in the renovation? A: The house owner wanted a modern and cosy home that can evolve with his family's different needs over time. I capitalised on the apartment’s features and redefined the layout, enhancing them to suit their lifestyle. I built a clean and light-filled house, coordinating neutral colour palettes and functions. Q: Which part of the renovation was the most expensive to execute? A: The most expensive part of the renovation is the carpentry works, as we tailor and custom-build each design to our clients' requirements. These jobs are carried out by our skilled craftsmen and we ensure good workmanship and quality.

Q: What are the elements that constitute the bulk of the renovation costs? A: Usually carpentry and wet works constitute the bulk of the renovation costs. That said, the cost varies according to designs, requirements and materials. Q: What is the most unique aspect of this project? A: Every project is unique in itself. However for this particular project it is the good rapport I built with the homeowner. It was an enjoyable process, closing the gap between knowing what my customer wants and actually putting the pieces of the project together to make it happen. I am glad that I can offer my professional perspective and practical advice to maximise the potential of the house.

SIMPLYID

Know Your ID: Urban Habitat BY LEONG PEI XIN

Speak to a homeowner who’s got renovation done and he or she will tell you that no hasty decision should be made about the interior designer (ID) to choose. The list of criteria is so long that it’s almost like searching for a life partner. Not only do they need to be qualified and competent, they also have to share your chemistry and ‘get’ your ideas. After all, it’s their job to translate your visions of a dream home to reality. And, they still have to be within budget or it’s a heartbreak at the end of the day. In this month’s issue, we have a chat with RYAN NG FROM URBAN HABITAT. This man’s busy as a bee and it was almost too hard to grab him for a cuppa, but we think you’ll be glad to hear he’s just occupied with handling all his clients’ projects to the best of his ability.

ID Firm: Urban Habitat Address: 515 Balestier Road, Singapore 329851 Tel: 6220 1262 Web: www.urbanhabitat.com.sg

» TELL US MORE ABOUT URBAN HABITAT, WHO ARE YOU GUYS AND WHY INTERIOR DESIGN? Well, we are considered young in this industry, but our team of interior designers brings together a rare fusion of skill and passion to every project we undertake. We are always listening to our clients and never compromise on quality. By offering inspirational and innovative design solutions to homes and businesses across Singapore and Malaysia, we believe we can make a positive contribution in the homes of our clients. Passion is why we are here today and our company’s motto says it all...’Putting a smile in your space’. » WHAT IS THE MOST EXCITING HOME RENOVATION PROJECT YOU’VE WORKED ON? The most exciting home renovation project will have to be the time when we worked with this client who requested to hack away most of the walls in his unit and redesign a completely different layout from the standard layout that we always see. To recreate a totally different layout was really exciting and by doing that, we had the luxury of planning the space according to the owner’s needs and also for his collection of toys. It was one of the most exciting projects as we were renovating that apartment from scratch.

» IN SPACE-CHALLENGED SINGAPORE, WHAT IS THE BEST DESIGN LAYOUT FOR A HOME OFFICE? The best design layout for a home office is to have a productive working environment and when you live in a small apartment, you need all the space you can find. With space lacking, a mezzanine bed and an office space underneath is one of the best spacesaving solutions. Add on a few custombuilt shelves to store your paperwork or green plants to filter the air, and it’s perfect! » HOW WOULD YOU ADVISE A HOMEOWNER WHO WANTS A HOME OFFICE THAT IS NOT ERGONOMICALLY DESIGNED? We would explain to them that by doing that, it might be minimizing productivity, which might also bring fatigue and discomfort at the workspace. After that we will propose a more comfortable yet functional design. » HAVE YOU EVER COME ACROSS HOMEOWNERS WHO ASKED YOU TO DESIGN THE IMPOSSIBLE? HOW DID YOU MANAGE TO TURN IT INTO SOMETHING REALISTIC AND WORKABLE? Yes, we get all sorts of requests, including those that are unfeasible or impracticable. There was one homeowner who really wanted a walkin bathroom, and to achieve that, we would need to extend the toilet wall beyond 0.5m. This is against HDB regulations as it would increase the waterproofing area and may cause water to leak into the unit below through the ceiling. As the client’s flat is on the second storey, there’s no direct unit below his flat, so we were able to successfully apply for a HDB permit to go ahead with the toilet works. The client was very happy because previous IDs he went to were not able to give him the walk-in bathroom he wanted.

For Better or for Worse Tapping into Your Good Directions in Your Home with the Life Gua method. While the Life Gua method enables us to understand the personal directions of the individual, the House Gua system allows us to understand the sectors of the house or property by calculating its Qi map. Another easy way to remember the difference between both methods is that the Life Gua method is direction-based while the House Gua method is location-based. Both methods work in unison because Eight Mansion aims to match the house with the individual by combining the best sectors of the For those who are keen on tapping

Instead, have all residents make use of the favourable sectors of the house collectively, and then, where possible, fine-tune the Feng Shui further by having each resident face their personal favourable directions. For the average person, evaluating the external macro environment and landforms is not something they can do without expert help. However, you may still use the Life Gua method as it is a safe method to use with minimal negative side effects. The idea behind Eight Mansions is that each house has a unique energy pattern and the goal is to try to match the house with the residents. This implies that the entire system boils down to eight types of houses and eight types of people. However, in Feng Shui, we must remember that there are always elements of Yin and Yang involved and that everything has its permutations and components to it. Easy Come, Easy Go Have a break from the conventional canister vacuum cleaner and find out why it might be time to give the handheld or (if you just want to kick back and relax) robotic option a go. BY LEONG PEI XIN

RO B O TI C C L E A NE RS Who wouldn’t want their own robot? A robotic vacuum cleaner may be the perfect excuse to finally claim one as your own.

What differentiates the good from the awesome is how well these cleaning robots make their way around TIP

your house. After all, you don't want to come home to find your vacuum robot entangled in a bunch of wires or worse, in pieces from a tragic fall from the top of your stairs.
