EDITOR'SNOTE

Issue 12 - December 2015

The particularity of the bedroom is sacrosanct; each bedroom is unique and holds an important place in my heart. In fact, the bedroom evokes differing feelings in various stages of my life. During my growing up years, the bedroom is a shared space for me and my sibling. This arrangement meant that there is little room to express our individuality. In actuality, this is where our negotiation skills are honed; who gets to use the closet or the privilege to sleep on top of the double deck bed. At night, the bedroom is transformed into a battlefield; an arena where clandestine pillow fights are held. Hence inevitably, the bedroom is where our close ties are forged which sets the stage for a lasting, enduring relationship that carried into adulthood. When I finally have a place to call my own, my perception of the bedroom has gained a fresh meaning. It is now an intimate place where I greet my loved one the first thing in the morning. It is a sacred place which is packed with all our dreams and fond memories; a safe haven to retreat to and wind down, a comfortable resting place for wearied body and soul. Truly, the bedroom is now an embodiment of me, an extension of my being. However, decorating the bedroom with the right design and comfortable furniture that embodies signature style could be daunting for some. Nevertheless, hopefully this issue could take some of the guesswork out of this process; there are practical bedroom interior design tips which you'll love and everything you need to know about bed mattress! In reality, the pages are filled with beautiful furniture and inspiring ideas which you will find useful when you embark the journey to create your bedroom sanctuary.

COVERSTORY

Practical bedroom interior design tips you'll love! The bedroom is the most vital place in the house since we spend around a third of our lives in it. Poor quality sleep will significantly deteriorate our health and work performance. In fact, the bedroom is a sacred sanctuary for our greatest privacy and intimacy, an oasis of calm and comfort to retire in after a hectic day of work. BY MARY LIEW

LIGHTING DOES MATTER Proper lighting sets the stage for a soothing and relaxing slumber. In fact, dimmed lighting helps to signal to our brains that it is time to rest. There, warm atmospheric lights that can be dimmed are suitable for bedrooms.

BEDSIDE TABLE LIGHTS Bedside table lights provide targeted, small, gentle pools of light meant for reading when you hunker down and curl up in the bed with a good book... and a glass of warm milk of course! The bedside table TIP

lights should be positioned such that there are no reflections that might annoy your slumbering partner.

functional furniture to reclaim storage space in the bedroom while avoiding all the clutter. Such furniture includes storage under the bed, storage headboard, storage stools, ottomans and so on.

DECLUTTER WITH CEILING FAN A ceiling fan helps to maximize the use of the vertical area, therefore keeping the bedroom devices to the minimum. In addition, ceiling fans help to promote healthy air circulation and when used in conjunction with the air-conditioner, helps to reduce the demand on the air-conditioner. This will help in reducing the electricity bills.

The general rule of TIP

thumb is that 15" blade ceiling fan should suffice for bedrooms of around 90 square feet or less. The ceiling fan should have between 7-feet to 9-feet of vertical clearance between the fan blades and the bedroom floor to allow air to circulate efficiently.

MUSIC TO SOOTHE YOUR SOUL The therapeutic properties and restorative benefits of music cannot be ignored; music helps to soothe one's soul and refreshes one's spirits. In fact, nothing beats listening to the music in the bedroom, unleashed by a good quality speaker.

There are many TIP

different types of speakers available in the market to choose from; from floorstanding speakers, bookshelf speakers, and even compact speakers. The general guideline is to use compact, wall-mount speakers for size and space challenged bedrooms.

‘Le Essenze’, the latest LaFaenzaCeramica porcelain tiles collection from Soon Bee Huat, draws its inspiration mainly from the lush, woody primeval forest and aims to bring nature right into your home. Ideal for creating serene and soul soothing space, ‘Le Essenze’ comes in hybrid of earthy hues of brown, in its details very reminiscent of oak and walnut, morado, elm and wengè. As a matter of fact, let ‘Le Essenze’ work its magic by transforming your abode to an oasis of calm, tranquility and architectural splendor!

LE ES SENZ E - EXCLU S I V ELY AT SOON BEE H U AT.

MAKE THE ENVIRONMENTAL CONSCIOUS CHOICE WITH 'LE ESSENZE' Millions of trees are cut down each year and hence, the 'Le Essenze' collection can help to reduce the amount of trees which are used for wooden flooring in both residential and commercial buildings. 'LE ESSENZE' IS THE PREFERRED CHOICE OVER TRADITIONAL HARDWOOD. 'Le Essenze' porcelain tiles are less porous than ceramic tiles, and hence more stain-resistant. Therefore, as the porcelain tiles are much denser and durable, they are more suitable for outdoor usage and light commercial traffic areas. In addition, porcelain tiles are easier to maintain since it is impact, scratch and chemical resistant. Consequently, porcelain tiles need not be re-varnished every couple of years. Furthermore, the expensive, exotic wooden flooring look can be easily achieved at a fraction of the price. In fact, advancement in wood-looking porcelain tile technology meant that tiny details such as wood grain, knots and color are replicated in near perfection. CHOICES GALORE WITH THE 'LE ESSENZE' COLLECTION! The 'Le Essenze' porcelain tiles are available in a myriad of colors that ranges from Mango, Olmo, Noce, Morado and Wenge. Also, these tiles come in different sizes (15 cm by 120 cm or 20 cm by 120 cm) and varying finishes such as nature or honed, with either matte or glossy surfaces.

Which type of mattress is suitable for you? Your body type, mainly your hips and shoulders, will decide which mattress type is more suitable. For instance, if your hips and shoulders are wider than your waist, a softer mattress will allow your spine and torso to stay neutral position since it allows your hips and shoulders sink deeper into the bed. Similarly, if your hips, shoulders and waist are around the same size, a firmer mattress offer better spine support.

What are the different mattress sizes available in the market? Different countries carry different mattress sizes because the average height of the population differs from region to region. The featured collections are showcased in thematic setups such as the Coastal Drift, the Beat Generation, the Adventurer and the Loft. The Coastal Drift collection is characterized by lavish use of fabric and leather, wood and brushed aluminium. In fact, the

Indeed, its unique blend of classic vintage with modern, complementary design is truly artfully infused. With an impressive mix of luxe leather and unparalleled craftsmanship finishes, this collection is definitely not to be missed. As for the Adventurer collection, fans of the British hero of the Royal Flying Corps, Captain James Biggle, would be rejoiced to know that this collection is heavily influenced by this gentleman's fearless mission in his trusty WWII fighter plane. WHAT YOU NEED

"

» An Old Chest of Drawers

Decoupage is the art of decorating an object by gluing coloured paper cut-outs, paper napkins or specially printed decoupage papers onto it in combination with special paint effects... the final layer is sealed with multiple layers of varnish until the 'stuck on' appearance disappears and the result looks like painting or inlay work.

Why won’t my baby sleep through the night? You just placed your baby in bed and it's time for your rest. But within an hour or two, loud wails overwhelm the room again. Why won't your baby sleep soundly through the night? BY CRYSTAL TAN

Babies sleep patterns can be affected by many things such as, discomfort, hunger, changes in their environment and routine. It is perfectly normal for your baby to wake up in the middle of the night requesting for a feed, or to get their soiled diapers changed. Sometimes, even the fun activities you engage with your baby just before their bedtime can cause them to wake up in the middle of the night. With so many possible reasons why your baby can't sleep through the night, it is important to identify the issue and work towards a solution. Here are five strategies to help your baby sleep better!

HELP YOUR BABY DIFFERENTIATE DAY AND NIGHT How do you help your baby understand it’s time for active play or when it’s time to sleep? During the daytime, use a vibrant tone to speak or play with baby, play nursery rhymes in the background while baby interacts and play, and you can also introduce natural light into the room. During night-time, tone down on the activities and use a softer and calmer voice to talk to your baby. You can even hum a lullaby to get them into the mood for sleeping. Adjust the temperature and lighting in the room to make it comfortable for your baby.

35 renonation.sg

A L L OW B A BY T O S L E E P O N T H E I R OW N Many babies are conditioned to sleep by certain habits such as sucking their thumb or pacifier, or being ‘rocked’ to sleep in an electric or sarong cradle. As your baby grows older, you may like to slowly wean them off these practices. This will reduce the frequency of your baby waking up in the middle of the night looking for their pacifier or wanting to be cuddled and rocked back to sleep. Some of these habits may take a longer period to quit or grow out. Give your baby a chance to learn how to sleep on their own instead.

PROV I D E A S E C U R I T Y O BJ E C T T H AT T H E Y C A N HOL D OR H UG Babies need to feel secure. An insecure baby tends to cry more in the night. Providing your baby with a security object like a small handkerchief, stuffed toy, blanket or pillow will give them additional comfort and security. When there is a sense of security, your baby will probably feel less frightened when they wake up in the middle of the night and might even learn how to self soothe and fall back to sleep on their own.

DEV ELOP A SL EEP RO U T I N E A N D M I N I M I S E C H A NG E S A consistent routine helps baby get into the mood for sleeping. You can start off with a nice warm bath, read a nice story and play soft music before putting them down in their cot. Repeat this routine and soon, your baby will associate these activities with sleep. The key is to be consistent, even during the weekends.

P L AY W H I T E N OI S E Some babies are naturally light sleepers, causing them to wake up at the slightest noise. Don’t try to block out external sound by covering baby’s ear with pillow or ear muffs as these objects might pose as choking hazards. Instead, try introducing ‘white noise’! White noise is a steady and consistent sound that you may hear in a quiet room or when it’s raining. White noise can be rather therapeutic and helps to promote sleep. Go to YouTube and search for ‘white noise’ to find a wide variety of such music that can last through the night.

It can be challenging to train your baby to sleep through the night but it is definitely worth the effort. Understand what your baby needs are, keep making changes to see what methods work for them. With time, effort and patience, you will reap the rewards of a good night’s sleep!

TO BA DR I Q: Tell us your total budget for the home renovation. A: Our total budget was about SGD 25K. Q: Why did you choose this concept for your home? A: The concept of our place has a mixture of our passions in arts and media with "Industrial" as our main theme. Q: What features did you request for to achieve the look you wanted? A: Living room: We wanted to achieve a clean look with elements of raw yet industrial. Kitchen: To achieve the spacious kitchen outlook, we decided to hack 3/4 of the kitchen wall and replaced it with the glass window and enclosed it with the glass door to separate the two living space of the kitchen and the living room. Aside from that, we chose to have our cabinet only on one side and maximising the space by having breakfast top on the opposite side. Q: Which part of your renovated home do you like the most? A: Every part of the house. We felt the house really fit our personality and customised to what we need.

Q: Were there any concessions you had to make due to budget constraints? A: No concession were made. Every details were carefully planned with the help of our ID, Edwin.

39 renonation.sg

T O T H E I N T E R IOR L A B Q: How was the design concept portrayed in the renovation? A: The owners wanted a house with a touch of scandinavian/industrial input and with the flexibility to entertain a huge crowd (20+ adults and kids) in a confined space. Thankfully, the owner were willing to go with some of my unconventional ideas, which includes the use of more wooden crate like furnishing and furnitures. Q: What are the elements that constitute the bulk of the renovation costs? A: To blend with the industrial/scandinavian space concept, a lot was spent on recreating the texture of surfaces. That includes the screeding of the kitchen walls, laying of random craft bricks around the common spaces and the use of treated wooden crate pallets instead of the more popular lamination method.

Q: Which part of the renovation was the most expensive to execute? A: Among the items for the renovation, the most expensive was actually a customised crate sofa. The idea stemmed from the grand stand seats in sport stadiums. Every individual crate made to specific sizes was separable as was the cushion seating. This allows the owners to have the flexibility to spread out the crate for increased seating spaces or simply stack them together when not in use. Q: What is the most unique aspect of this project? A: The most unique aspect of the project was that the owners and I tried fusing different unique elements into a very limited space. The end result was surprisingly cordial. Every individual item seem to blend in perfectly.

3-Room HDB Bedok Reservoir

TO N AWA L Q: Tell us your total budget for the home renovation. A: It was about $27,000 including fittings. Q: Why did you choose this concept for your home? A: We wanted something contemporary, easy on the eyes, and simple. A concept that had a good flow as you walked through the house, which was very important to us. Q: What features did you request for to achieve the look you wanted? A: We wanted an outstanding wall where we could have a TV mounted on, one that could catch anyone’s eyes the moment you entered the house. So we added additional dark-coloured tiles to give our contemporary concept a little “edge” against our soft brown/white walls. We didn't like the narrow living space in original layout of the house so we decided to expand the living room by breaking down the entrance walls to the kitchen and the 1st common room wall. It gives the illusion of a larger living room. We then installed sliding glass doors in replacement of the hacked walls and a curtain for privacy so it could be a guest room besides being just a study.

Q: Which part of your renovated home do you like the most? A: The small “service yard” in the kitchen that we created together with our designer, Eva Lee. I didn’t like the idea of our washing machine in the middle of my kitchen (or more commonly in between the shower room and WC), so we decided to hide it behind our sink underneath the countertop. It was a remarkable idea. (Note: Picture not taken) Q: Were there any concessions you had to make due to budget constraints? A: We played around the idea of breaking a small section of our 2nd common room wall so that it could be combined with the shower room, making it a “master toilet” of sorts. But my husband was against it, mainly because of costs and fearing unwanted smells coming into the bedroom.

41 renonation.sg

T O AC E S PAC E DE SIG N Q: What was the design concept of this home? How was it portrayed in the renovation? A: The theme was into modern design. It was portrayed in the way the study area was cut out from an existing bedroom. The whole open concept also lets it feel nothing less than a 3room HDB. All the areas from the study and living room as well as the kitchen are just cleverly divided by glass doors than can be opened and closed to enlarge or close up the areas. Q: Which part of the renovation was the most expensive to execute? A: The major components was done in the kitchen together with all the glass works. As there must be no mistakes in the glass, thus the glass works are among one of the more expensive items.

Q: What are the elements that constitute the bulk of the renovation costs? A: The majority of the cost for this project was the kitchen works. Q: What is the most unique aspect of this project? A: The unique part was how the room was opened up to be an open concept working area. The owner is willing to give up that part of the room to have his own working space. The floor works with a combination of the designs also shows the creativity of the designer. Another unique point was how the rooms were cleverly and subtlety divided but yet can be seen as one with the layout of the glass doors.

3 Bedroom Condo Parc Rosewood

TO S T E V E N Q: Tell us your total budget for the home renovation. A: It is approximately about S$40,000. Q: Why did you choose this concept for your home? A: We wanted something that give us a resort style especially in the living room. Q: What features did you request for to achieve the look you wanted? A: It would be the mirror wall and the convertible space-saving dining table. Or I requested the mirror....table. Q: Which part of your renovated home do you like the most? A: It has got to be our living room. Q: Were there any concessions you had to make due to budget constraints? A: We had to give up on the water fountain.

43 renonation.sg

T O JS R DE SIG N Q: How was the design concept portrayed in the renovation? A: The sophisticated design incorporates an attractive open-plan living area with a dramatic touch of organic and natural feel. The feature wall in the living room captivate visitors with brown parallel grains that gives off a strong contrast, with the rest of its neutral coloured accent, and its suspended TV console proudly shows-off dark wooden trimmings. The master bedroom is eloquently designed with a classy touch. An intriguingly light palette dominated by interestingly shaped grey floral motifs, along with a whiff of purple makes the owners feel like royalty from the comfort of their luxurious bed. Q: Were there any challenges during the project? A: Well yes, but Ron always anticipates

difficult situations in any home renovation project — with solutions on hand. Faced with space constraints and unable to accommodate a dining table in the living area, the design team went on to customise one that swivels in and out of the display cabinet – complete with pull-out stools & cushions. Of particular interest was how the team had to create an opening between the walls separating the master bedroom and display cabinet in the living area, so as to allow a TV console to be built-into the walls of the master bedroom. Q: What is the most unique aspect of this project? A: Children’s bedroom. It has to be comfortable and inviting for the kids. Hence, Ron designed a whimsical room with a pastel pink tinged walls and a back-lit flower shaped ceiling — injecting elements of fun and playfulness.

We offer outstanding end-product results, delivering greater value for customers as well as nurturing personalized customer relationships in between. We believe that every household and every dream home is unique and no two homes should be made identical. » HOMES ARE INCREASINGLY BECOMING COMPACT. HOW DO YOU THINK INTERIOR DESIGN CAN HELP HOMEOWNERS TO MAXIMIZE AND RECLAIM THEIR SPACE? The space can be maximized by careful choice of colours (such as bright colours) or through the use of proper interior design choices (such as Minimalist design) to create an illusion of a more spacious home. To fully utilize the space, one has to think out of the box and one example includes creating some storage or study table on the bay window and so on.

45 renonation.sg » WHEN DESIGNING A BEDROOM, WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU WILL LOOK OUT FOR TO ENSURE THAT THE HOMEOWNERS GET PROPER REST? To ensure that homeowners get proper rest, I will choose soft and comfortable finishing and be selective in my material choice. For instance, cushion bedhead looked more cozy and comfortable when compared to using wooden bedhead. In addition, curtains and not blinds can soften the overall design. Establishing a more luxurious, relaxed and cozy, resort-like ambiance will mean selecting darker tone of colors for the bedroom. » WHAT IS THE RECOMMENDED WAY OF UTILIZING LIGHTS IN A BEDROOM TO MAKE IT MORE ROMANTIC AND APPEALING? I will recommend the following ways to make a bedroom more romantic and appealing; install cove lights to bring out the soft ambiance through recessed illumination, hanging crystal chandeliers add a touch of elegance and lastly, always go for warm light at bedroom instead of cold white light! » WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON RENOVATION MISTAKES COMMITTED BY HOMEOWNERS? WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO THEM? I observed that homeowners tend to buy furniture which is unsuitable for their homes. They should be mindful to keep the furniture dimension proportional to their room space. Another observation is that "right decision" making is very important and thus homeowners must know their renovation budget well and know what they really like.

» WHAT ARE THE MOST POPULAR INTERIOR DESIGN CHARACTERISTICS WHICH HOMEOWNERS HAVE REQUESTED IN THE RECENT YEARS? For the last few years Modern contemporary and Minimalist Interior Design was very popular. In recent years Scandinavian, Industrial and Cafe inspired Interior Design has gained much attention. » LASTLY, HOW WOULD YOU DEAL WITH HOMEOWNERS WHO ASKED FOR THE SKY, BUT WITH AN UNREALISTIC BUDGET? I will give these homeowners my honest advice and try to meet their requirements within their budget by proposing an alternative material range to achieve the same look and feel or counter propose other designs based on their needs.
