BBQ OTP

As a southerner, it has been my duty to sample barbecue far and wide. From Texas to the Carolinas and all over the state of Georgia, I’ve tucked into pulled pork, ribs, Brunswick stew and brisket.

Barbecue is near and dear to the hearts of Intowners, as you will see on Page 30 of this month’s issue. We put out a call via social media for readers to tell us their favorite barbecue joints and they responded big time. I’m selfishly happy that all my go-to places made the list, especially Fox Bros. on DeKalb Avenue and Fat Matt’s over on Piedmont Road.

But if you’re in a travelling mood – maybe a weekend road trip – I’ve got a few places OTP that are well worth the drive. The closest is Slope’s on Johnson Ferry Road in Sandy Springs. The pulled-pork plate (love the sweet sauce) with mac ‘n’ cheese, Brunswick stew and cornbread is my favorite on the northside. I’m a Brunswick stew snob, and Slope’s has got it right on the money – the perfect consistency of pork, corn and tomatoes.

If you drive south, there are two places you absolutely must visit. The first is Dean’s Barbecue on South Main Street in Jonesboro. It’s been serving up finger-lickin’ ‘cue since 1947. The pork sandwiches are generous, the Brunswick stew has a slightly smoky flavor (along with a meaty consistency) and they make sure to fill your bag with soda crackers, because it ain’t stew unless you can crumble or dip the crackers.

The second place is a bit further afield: Fresh Air BBQ down in Jackson. It’s been an middle Georgia institution since 1929 and it’s so, so, so, soooo good. This is ‘cue and stew of the gods. I drove my mom down for Mother’s Day this year and we gorged ourselves and I bought a pint of stew to bring home. When you have to get some to go, you know it’s a winner.

Now my mouth is watering.

Chances are, if you’ve driven around Intown in the last few years, you’ve seen one of Living Walls’ impressive mural projects.

The most recent and high profile mural was part of the Boulevard Tunnel Initiative that connects the Old Fourth Ward and Cabbagetown. The rainbow-hued, 1,000 foot long mural designed by the artist who calls himself MOMO “fully embodies” the mission of Living Walls, according to the nonprofit’s co-founder and Poncey-Highland resident Monica Campana.

Campana and Blacki Li Rudi Migliozzi founded the organization in 2009. Since then, Living Walls has painted over 100 murals and hosted over 30 lectures and other educational events in Atlanta. Every August, Living Walls holds a conference on street art and urbanism, complete with lectures, film screenings, block parties, gallery shows, bike tours, and a main event, along side smaller more intimate projects called Concepts.

“The Boulevard Tunnel Initiative was one of our most bold and ambitious projects to date,” Campana said. “It brought people out of their cars, out of their houses, into their communities, and prompted interaction with their neighbors and public spaces.”

Campana, a native of Peru, met Migliozzi while she was a student at Georgia Tech and the friends began doing street art together.

“We saw how street art was making an impact on peoples’ lives, so we proposed a show on street art to [art and music space] Eyedrum, who suggested we turn it into

a conference,” Campana recalled.

Five years later, The Living Walls Conference is attracting local, national and international artists. During this year’s conference, 17 more murals will be created starting Aug. 4.

Living Walls work was recently threatened by a proposed ordinance that would have added more bureaucratic red tape to the creation of mural projects. The outcry from the community over the vague regulations in the ordinance was so strong that the Atlanta City Council has tabled it indefinitely.

Along with plans to bring murals to other parts of the state with the help of the Georgia Council for the Arts, Living Walls is also going global thanks to Google’s Street Art Project, which aims to permanently document and street art, which has an indefinite lifespan.

“Our partnership with Google will help further our mission by allowing many different audiences to engage with public spaces around the world,” Campana said.

Atlanta Police targeting 481 repeat offenders to curb crime in the city

The statistics are jaw-dropping: 481 repeat felony offenders in Atlanta have been arrested more than 7,000 times and 72 percent of those convicted were given probation or alternative sentencing. That means these criminals didn’t do any jail time or were released on time served. The majority of them are back on the street committing more crimes.

Atlanta Police Chief George Turner repeated those figures during the June Buckhead Council of Neighborhoods meeting and told the audience what is being done to combat those statistics.

Turner said a task force convened by Mayor Kasim Reed specifically to target the repeat offenders was meeting every two weeks and was hoping to have recommendations by the end of the summer.

“If we could hold those 481, this city would be in a great place,” Turner said. “We might not be Mayberry, but it would make us safe.”

As an example, Turner said one career criminal has been arrested 92 times and had been a repeat offender for 50 years. “He’s now eligible for social security,” Turner quipped.

Turner said the task force has brought all members of the justice system – from law enforcement to the district attorney’s office – to the table to find out how these 481 could finally be put in jail.

One audience member suggested that there should be a scorecard to see which judges are giving light or probationary sentences to repeat offenders so they could be voted out of office if possible. Turner said that was a good idea, but it would have to done by citizens or business community.

Although it sounds like something out of the movie Minority Report, Turner said the Atlanta Police Department (APD) is using crime prediction software

to show where crimes are likely to happen next and increasing patrols in those areas. He said patrol vehicles are also being tracked to make sure they are hitting areas ripe for crime.

The APD has also partnered with national and international police forces to share leadership, training and crime preventions methods, including Los Angeles, New York, the Israel National Police and London’s Metropolitan Police.

Turner said his department has also been focusing on changing its procedures in light of the passage of House Bill 60, also known as the “safe carry act” by the gun lobby or the “guns everywhere bill ” by its detractors. With guns being allowed in public places – bars, churches, school zones, government buildings and certain parts of airports – Turner said his department had been working to get ready for the July 1 implementation of the law.

Turner said the APD SWAT team was recently sent out after receiving a call about a person aiming a gun at another. “Under the new law, that will not be a crime,” Turner said. “We won’t be able to challenge someone or ask if they have a permit even if they are walking down the street with a gun on display.”

Libraries weather budget, staff cuts

In January, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners passed a budget that included a $6 million (19 percent) cut to the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System (AFPLS) budget.

Starting in February, overall library hours were cut by more than a third and more than 100 positions were eliminated. Every branch (except Central Library and Auburn Avenue Research Library) is closed Fridays, and 20 of the 31 are closed at least two days per week.

In June, we asked several branch staff, the AFPLS Interim Director Anne Haimes, AFPLS Board Chair Stephanie Moody, and neighbors about the impact of the hours and staff cuts.

“Certainly the worst impact is on patron access,” Moody responded. Circulation for April 2014 is down dramatically compared to last year due to the new reduced hours. Staffing levels are at an all-time low, which is hurting patron services and staff morale. When the Buckhead Branch opened 25 years

ago, it had 24 staff, in January it had 13, and is now down to six. Programs were cut or are offered on different days. The East Atlanta Branch previously hosted three story-times per week and now only hosts one.

At the Ponce de Leon Branch, staff has been bombarded with questions about how they can help and who to contact. “They can’t keep the new hours straight; they keep coming when we’re closed. For a majority of our patrons, coming to the library isn’t just about picking out some books, or checking their email. It’s part of their routine. They come on the same day, every week. They chat with the staff. They run into friends and neighbors. They attend programs. The library is a part of the community.”

It’s a situation, Moody said, the board and the Fulton Commission are trying to rectify. In fact, the Commission is reportedly considering adding back some Friday hours by pulling them from other days.

“The biggest thing people can do is use the library,” urged Haimes. “

Would you like to buy a Civic Center?

The Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center (most folks just call it the Civic Center) is for sale after the Atlanta City Council voted to put the 380,000 square foot complex on the market. The city expects to fetch as much as $42 million for the 16-acre property.

Built in 1967, the city has decided to divest itself of the property, which loses an estimated $400,000 per year, in hopes that a developer will transform the property into something more useful such as housing, offices or retail. The city also recently bought out the lease on Underground

Atlanta with hopes of doing something similar with the historic Downtown site.

The Georgia World Congress Center has taken over most of the events that were once hosted by the Civic Center, but it still regularly hosts events and is where Steve Harvey tapes the “Family Feud” game show.

The 4,600-seat venue at the corner of Piedmont Avenue and Ralph McGill Boulevard underwent a $2 million renovation in 2001and was the first city building to reach Mayor Kasim Reed’s sustainability goals with energy efficiency upgrades. However, the building is in need of more work, which could run into the millions.

Independence Day events happening around Intown

The Peachtree Road Race officially kicks off the holiday early in the morning. This year, the Peachtree did not invite the world’s elite runners and instead will host the U.S. men’s and women’s 10K national champions. The race starts at Lenox Square and makes its ways down Peachtree Street to 10th Street and Piedmont Park. The wheelchair race begins at 6:45 a.m. and the foot race at 7:17 a.m. Spectators are strongly encouraged to take MARTA, which will begin running at 5 a.m. on race day. Many restaurants and bars will be open along the route to watch the race, so check with your favorite watering hole. For more information, visit peachtreeroadrace.org.

The Legendary Fourth of July at Lenox Square features live music and one of the biggest fireworks displays in the country. Lenox Square shops and restaurants will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on July 4. Entertainment begins at 6 p.m. with the winner of Atlanta’s Next Legend talent search, Journey tribute band Departure and headliners Party on the Moon. Fireworks are scheduled to begin at approximately 9:45 p.m. Parking will be almost impossible, so visitors are encouraged to take MARTA. Pets are not allowed. For more information, visit simon.com.

The Centennial Olympic Park’s 4th of July Celebration will begin at 6 p.m. with fireworks scheduled for 9:40 p.m. Bring a picnic or enjoy food from nearby restaurants. There will be entertainment and live music, too. Since parking will be extremely limited, visitors are encouraged to take MARTA to Philips Arena/GWCC or Peachtree Center stations. The Georgia Aquarium Red White & Brew is July 4 from 7 to 10 p.m. with beer, food, live music and watching the Centennial Park fireworks from atop the aquarium’s parking deck rooftop. Tickets are $45 for members, $55 for nonmembers. For more information, visit georgiaaquarium.com.

Decatur’s July 4th Pied Piper Parade will wind through downtown Decatur on July 4 and the community is invited to join in by decorating your wagon, riding a bike, skating or walking in the event. Line-up is at 5:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Decatur, the parade begins at 6 p.m. and ends at the Community Bandstand on the courthouse square. The Sandy Springs Stars and Stripes Celebration will be held July 5 with music from Shiloh at 7:30 p.m. followed by fireworks at 9:45 p.m. at the King and Queen buildings. Runners at last year’s Southwest 5K

Atlanta BeltLine Southwest 5K is set for July 12

The Atlanta BeltLine Running Series will host the fourth annual Atlanta BeltLine Southwest 5K on July 12 at 7:30 a.m. at Gordon White Park, 1350 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd, SW.

The event will take place along the Southwest Trail and through the Historic West End and Westview neighborhoods. This event is one of the last opportunities to experience the southwest hiking trail before construction begins on the Westside Trail.

The Atlanta BeltLine Running Series has become popular for its featured challenges that engage runners and walkers in fun, friendly competition. The Southwest 5K will feature the Southwest Sizzlin’ Team Challenge, where teams representing local businesses, schools, non-profits, run clubs, friends, neighborhoods and beyond, compete for

a $500 cash purse.

There will also be art along the route, additional team challenges for fastest, largest and most spirited and the route is friendly for strollers and dogs.

“It’s inspiring to see the community engaging so wholeheartedly in the Atlanta BeltLine Running Series and other fitness activities,” said Atlanta BeltLine Partnership Interim Executive Director Rob Brawner.

“As more and more of our running events are attended by hundreds and thousands of Atlantans, and trails are filled with runners, walkers, cyclists and beyond, we are making a tangible impact on community health in Atlanta.”

Kroger customers in the Atlanta Division donated more than $232,000 to the Children’s Miracle Network during a recent two-week fundraising effort. Customers purchased $1 hotair balloon icons, known as “Miracle Balloons,” with all proceeds going to the charity.

Emory’s Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center has been awarded a five-year, $7.2 million grant from the National Institute on Aging to discover proteins altered by Alzheimer’s, in an effort to identify new therapeutic targets.

The long, hot summer

There is something about summer that seems to accentuate our parenting flaws. We relax a little bit since there is no homework and no one has to be at school by 8 a.m. Dinner tends to be later, bedtime is a little looser and ice cream is doled out like vitamins. The household is devoid of any homemade charts that monitor things like screen time or chores. We have our moments though. Well, Kristen does at least.

This upcoming week will be “Screen Free” by her decree, which should be interesting. Elliott has gotten really into Minecraft lately. Half the time he isn’t even playing, but watching instructional videos by some British guy who calls himself Stampy Cat building elaborate Minecraft worlds. I don’t understand these worlds, or why an adult would care to create them, put them on YouTube or call himself Stampy Cat. Anyway, Elliott will be just as happy playing Boggle this week, right?

Last Friday night, Margo wanted to watch the video of her ballet recital so we left her to her own device. Apparently, she toggled over to Netflix and 34 minutes of an episode of Orange Is The New Black. I’ve never seen the show but from what I gather, it’s not intended for the 4-year-old ballerina set. She says she didn’t catch any bad words but noted there was a shower scene involving “friends.” I give her and her nonplussed attitude much credit. I give us very little. So yeah, maybe a screen free week is a decent idea.

Hopefully, it fares better than the week that Kristen decided unilaterally that our household was going to stop eating cereal with added sugar. I was not debriefed. Children revolted and the morning routine was blown to bits. In a rare act of subterfuge I stopped at the store for “bananas” later that day and returned with a couple boxes that three out of four Sullivans could agree upon the next morning.

The achilles heel of our household is the sleep schedule and summertime is doing nothing for our handicap. Kristen and I take one child apiece and usually fall asleep with them after reading stories. When you ask me what the last good book I read was and I answer Diary of a Wimpy Kid, I am being dead serious. At some point around midnight, we drag ourselves out of our respective child’s beds and retreat to our own which is a terminally flawed ritual, I know, but they are awfully snuggable when we put them to bed. It’s just then they wake in the middle of night as changed beings.

Elliott has something of a hot stove reaction to waking up and finding that he has no company so he might come in around 2 a.m. or so. As he has gotten longer and leaner, sharing a bed with him can be like cuddling up to a sack of triangles. So instead of catching the wrong side of an isosceles for the second time in a night, I just wave the white flag and trade beds with him. I should wear a FitBit to bed because after falling asleep in Elliott’s bed, then retreating to my own, then forfeiting my spot back to him, Margo fetches me for my fourth sleep location of the evening. There I can enjoy her patented flip flops, sideways donkey kicks and sleep-whining about the covers being on (or off ). It’s a ninehour circus of sleep where I net about six.

Needless to say, The Society for Gifted Parenting might not come a-calling this summer but the truth is I don’t really have any interest in listening to Yanni or drinking beet smoothies either. Oh, wait, I think the week after “Screen Free” week is the “Summer Smoothie Cleanse” week that Kristen has planned. I’m pretty sure after that we’ll have this place running perfectly.

Peggy Denby and Don Jones, founding board members of the Midtown Ponce Security Alliance, have retired after 12 years of service. Denby served as president from 2003, while Jones served as treasurer. Denby was an often controversial figure in Midtown, leading the charge to close bars, clean up the Peachtree-Pine homeless shelter and getting prostitutes off residential streets. Bill Nickles was named the new MPSA president and Ed Seeman was named treasurer.

The Atlanta Police Department and the Atlanta Police Foundation recently hosted an international delegation from the Israel National Police Department. The visit was part of a new partnership between the Israel National Police and the Atlanta Police Leadership Institute (APLI), a program of the APD focused on identifying and developing police leaders from the time that they step into the academy as recruits, and up through the ranks of the department - developing their leadership skills and style as they progress. The APLI exchange program encourages training on international law enforcement issues and both police forces will be able to share information on preventing acts of terror, responding to suspicious packages and organizing volunteers during an emergency situation.

I’ve never written about women’s fashion on the Sweet Peach Blog before but this hidden gem of a shop was too good not to share.

Doubletake Recycled Luxury is located in the Old Fourth Ward section of Atlanta inside Studioplex. Owner Daniel Troppy is passionate about vintage clothing, specifically pieces with a name and a cool factor. He carries clothes from incredible designers like Valentino, Oscar de la Renta, Jill Sander, DVF and more – and at great prices.

Inside you’ll also find shoes, bags, hats, belts, scarves and gobs of jewelry. And don’t be surprised if old tunes by Barry White or Dionne Warwick are playing on the record player when you step inside. It’s vintage, baby.

A fan of vintage, my friend Sarah was all smiles from the moment she walked inside Doubletake. She tried on almost a dozen dresses, but she seemed to always pop in red. She picked a 60’s wool dress (with silk lining) from designer James Galanos. Nancy Reagan was a loyal fan, and now, so is Sarah.

My friend Lyn fell in love with a 60’s Oscar de la Renta Italian peasant dress, while my pal Kendall was into an 80’s dress with sheer waistband, silk belth and wave pattern form Guy Laroche. Sarah also found a 70’s Halston acetate and metal caftan dress.

Troppy opened this treasure trove of vintage luxury in 2010 and is constantly searching charity shops and second-hand stores to find fashions for Doubletake.

I suggest giving him a visit if you want to play luxurious dress up for a day. It’s really fun as he has a knack for figuring out what your style is and what would flatter your figure – whether you know it or not. As Troppy says, “Just try it on!”

The Atlanta City Council’s vote last month to encourage and support more urban agriculture is set to make the city a national leader in local food systems.

More Atlanta families are growing their own food, while community gardens and farmers markets are now hubs of community interaction, but until the city council made zoning changes, urban agriculture operations were prevented from obtaining small business loans, urban farmers getting business licenses and put up barriers for legal land lease agreements.

The changes were led by a grassroots group of urban farmers, community gardeners, community development organizations and citizen advocates working in partnership with Atlanta’s Office of Planning and Office of Sustainability and supported by the Turner Environmental Law Clinic at Emory Law School, which helped draft and negotiate the zoning updates.

“Atlanta should be proud of itself,” says Mindy Goldstein, director of the Turner Environmental Law Clinic. “The city’s urban agriculture ordinance is one of the most streamlined and permissive in the country. This ordinance will support our residents, our farmers, and our small

businesses. It will set the stage for our city to become a leader in local food production, and it will serve as a guiding light for other cities seeking to bring fresh produce into their communities.”

Rashid Nuri, CEO and President of the Truly Living Well Center for Natural Urban Agriculture, agreed. “Urban agriculture is about strengthening communities, building lasting relationships, caring for the soil, and nurturing the plants that nurture us,” Nuri said.

Nuri said having the community’s support has enabled Truly Living Well to become a national model of urban

agriculture, employing 15 people and growing 30,000 pounds of food last year.

“These new zoning regulations are going to help take Truly Living Well and the rest of the urban ag community to the next level,” Nuri stated.

ordinance validates the innovative urban agriculture happening in the city. “While the ordinance is meant to clarify and improve zoning policies, we hope it will stimulate the next wave of gardens and farms that can serve up some mighty delicious food for resident to eat, cook and grow,” Rolls said.

EarthCraft Sustainable Preservation (ECSP), a third-party green building certification program created specifically for historic buildings in the Southeast, has launched to evaluate and highlight what is inherently sustainable about historic buildings while providing guidance on appropriate alterations to make them more energy and water efficient. The ECSP program was designed concurrently with the green rehabilitation of historic Rhodes Hall, headquarters of The Georgia Trust, in Midtown.

Trees Atlanta has announced plans for a Members’ Woodland to be part of the new playground and path projects in Chastain Park . The grove of up to 200 native specimen trees – including oaks, elms and dogwoods – will honor those who have contributed to Trees Atlanta’s efforts to preserve and expand Atlanta’s tree canopy. The Chastain Park Woodland will offer opportunities for Atlanta’s children to learn about native trees. The Fulton County Board of Commissioners has approved environmental legislation aimed at protecting local neighborhoods from pipelines that contain hazardous liquid and gas. By any measure, a small business that has endured for 40 years is something to celebrate. The fact that it’s a bookstore – and a specialized one at that – in this age of Amazon and eBooks makes the anniversary even more special.

The oldest feminist bookstore in the south and one of the few remaining in the country, Charis Books & More has been a landmark in Little Five Points since it opened its doors in 1974. For the last 20 years, it’s occupied the little purple house on Euclid Avenue in the heart of the neighborhood.

Before the global financial crisis, there was talk of possibly moving Charis to Decatur for more space and better parking, but the nonprofit Charis Circle board, now under the direction of Elizabeth Anderson, steered the conversation back to Little Five Points.

“Of course, we would like more space, more parking and be closer to a MARTA station, but being in Little Five is a large part of Charis’ heart and soul, “ Anderson said. “Rather than move, we decided to focus on what’s special about this space. That and we had customers telling us, ‘we don’t want you to move.’”

While Charis’ roots are firmly planted in Little Five Points, weathering the upheaval in how people consume books has

providing a full catalogue of titles through its website (charisbooksandmore.com) through the Kobo platform. Anderson said they regularly work with local and indie authors to help them format their books for Kobo.

Charis is acquiring equipment to videotape many of its in-store events to post online (one of the biggest requests by customers) and has also been reaching out to other organizations on how to partner as part of a “Listening Campaign.”

“We want to hear the concerns and issues of other groups and see how we can work together – whether it’s setting up a book table at your local synagogue or helping to spread the word about HIV/ AIDS issues,” Anderson said. “We want to be a community resource for the next 40 years.”

“If you bought one book a month from Charis, it would make a big difference,” said store co-owner Sara Luce Look.

Both Anderson and Look, as well as the small staff, take pride in “curating” the selection of books at Charis to fit what their customers and the community wants. The shop has also seriously upped the number

of in-store events thanks to Charis Circle, which was created in 1996 to help expand the shop’s programming. Look recalls in the early days of Charis, they had about four programs a month.

“We’re hosting 15 to 20 a month now, whether it’s a book signing, workshops or community talks,” Look said.

Anderson said part of Charis’ mission is to introduce Intown to a new writer, poet or activist working for social change. Charis has also stepped into the eBook arena,

Of course fundraising is an important part of keeping the doors open at Charis, so they are currently encouraging supporters to make a pledge of $40 a month. There’s also a drive to find “40 for the 40th” – 40 donors willing to give a gift of $1,000 each.

Charis is planning a full slate of events for early November to celebrate its 40th anniversary, including some very special guests. “We really want to make the week of events in November a national, feminist homecoming party at Charis,” Anderson said. “We’re excited to see so many of our old friends.”

Polaris reopens atop Hyatt Regency in Downtown

While out on the town in Atlanta, it’s not o en that your drink runs away from you. Literally. As in, you are standing in your spot and your drink is actually moving away from you. at’s what could happen when dining at a rotating restaurant.

Atlantans are excited for the return of Polaris, our city’s rst rotating restaurant, which sits atop the Hyatt Regency hotel in Downtown, an illuminated blue dome that captures 360-degree views of the city and beyond.

Originally opened in 1967, and recently redesigned from the ground up, Polaris o ers a comfortable lounge environment, with a residential feel. As soon as you exit the elevator (scaling 23 oors in 19 seconds), you immediately enter a space that looks as inviting as a posh high-rise apartment. e open kitchen concept reminds you of a friend’s house, inviting you to enjoy your evening there, or in the library area, the formal dining areas, or at the expansive and fully stocked bar.

It goes without saying that most stunning décor is of course the views. Everywhere your eyes land in Polaris, there are panoramic vistas of the city. Even when ordering a drink from the bar, your mixologist is framed by huge oor to ceiling windows.

If you imagine the restaurant as a cylinder, then the inner core is host to the kitchen and massive island where the chefs present their magic. e outer circle is the space that rotates, making a full revolution every 45 minutes.

Alas, that is how my drink got away from me. I set my glass of Hendricks (infused with cucumber water and fresh, local blackberries) down on one of the islands to chat with executive chef Martin Pfe erkorn, and soon realized that my drink was three feet away from me. Such fun makes for a jolly evening.

But Chef Martin was such an interesting conversation partner. He introduced me to all of the dishes served that evening – and you should know that the entire menu of Polaris changes every two weeks because they only serve

meat and produce that are in-season. e philosophy of the new Polaris is farm-totable, small plates, and expert mixology utilizing small distilleries and wineries.

If my ve empty plates were any indication, it is safe to say that the dishes featured that evening delighted me. Particular favorites were the Tasso ham (a specialty of south Louisiana cuisine and provided by local smokehouse e Spotted Trotter) topped with little lady goat cheese, fresh peaches, and tiny radishes; together, it was the perfect bite. I was also a huge fan of the risotto topped with rabbit and pork belly (le sigh), the duck pate in a sesame wa e, as well as the bacon popcorn(!). I was even treated to a slice of ibérico ham from Spain. My belly could not have been happier.

Every dish on the Polaris menu includes at least eight ingredients from their roo op gardens. Chef Martin beamed as he told me about the 12 raised beds they maintain on the adjoining roo op, growing ingredients like tomatoes, peppers, three di erent kinds of mint, basil, oregano, rosemary, and thyme, as well as two beehives, which provide both honey for the cocktails and meals for Polaris.

Cheers to the team at Polaris; your re-emergence in Atlanta has been eagerly anticipated. Welcome back, old friend

Atlanta Street Food Festival set for July 12

e third annual Atlanta Street Food Festival rolls into Piedmont Park on July 12 from noon to 8 p.m.

Food truck fanatics will have the chance to sample from the city’s best while supporting e Giving Kitchen, the culinary charity with the unique mission of providing crisis grants to members of Atlanta’s restaurant community facing unanticipated hardship.

Presented by MARTA, the festival will feature more than 40 food trucks, including Champion Cheesesteaks, Yumbii, Ibiza Bites, Mix’d Up, Vietnamies, Angel Fire BBQ and Masala Fresh. ere will also be local merchants, artisans, live entertainment and amusement rides for children and adults.

Bonjour, mes amis! I’m dining at this quaint and charming café and bistro called Anis. Wish you were here! But… don’t buy an airline ticket because I’m speaking French, this place is closer than you might think.

Anis Café and Bistro occupies a converted house on a side street in the Garden Hills neighborhood of Buckhead, not the south of France. It’s full of personality and busting at the seams a er enjoying over 20 years of award-winning success.

Several of the dishes we tried were underdone and under seasoned not be tting of a kitchen whose dinner menu “Plats Principaux” range from $21-$33 an entrée. e service, while also suited for a casual environ, stumbled with the ner points. Orders were served in “roll call” style fashion; “Alright who had the chicken and who had the sh?” and additional glasses of wine, re lls on water and additional utensils took repeated queries.

e Boeuf au Poivre, ordered by two at our table, was a ne piece of beef but both servings were undercooked, medium rare being rare and medium being medium rare. e accompanying cognac peppercorn sauce added a peppery heat but otherwise had little avor. e Lyonnaise potatoes, roasted portabello mushrooms and sweet onions were a nice accompaniment but a meager portion for a dinner entree.

e Poulet Roti, thyme roasted freerange chicken, was moist but needed seasoning and lacked a nicely browned and well-rendered skin.

e kitchen actually prepares “poisson” quite well and it was the highlight of our meal. e Truite Meuniere, a pan roasted trout with wilted greens, marinated artichokes and capers in a lemon brown butter was perfectly done, the sh akey and rm. e Loup de Mer, the literal translation being “Wolf of the Sea”, but really a European version of sea bass, was nicely cooked and perched atop a concoction of leeks, potatoes and a sa ron nage, a poaching liquid thickened with our and butter. It was a comforting dish but light enough to still enjoy in the warmer weather.

e dessert o erings were the usual French suspects. We opted for the pro teroles and the crème brulee; both were faithful “exemples” of each. Several of our diner’s preferences would have been

that the caramel on the brulee be torchred just prior to serving so that it was not only crispy but warm as well.

A quick check of a favorite local airline produced round-trip ticket prices from Atlanta to France of over $2000. So save your Euros and visit Anis Café and Bistro. You’ll have a “bon moment” if you let it show you its more casual roots.

We asked Pamela Berger, who operates the fantastic Atlanta-based Sweet Peach blog (sweetpeachblog.com), to select some of her favorite go-to and online shops to help refresh your interior and garden. Here’s what she came up with.

Atlanta-based artist Jamie Jimenez has a playful, bright style that quickly grabs your attention. Her online shop, Yours Is The Earth (yours-is-theearth.com), includes illustrated and calligraphed prints, stationery and home goods that celebrate our favorite time of day – mealtime.

Every time I drive or walk by Laura Iarocci’s fantastic shop, Faith Flowers (faithflowersatlanta.com), I feel inspired. She always has the most thoughtful and creative floral creations – like her salvaged log centerpieces filled with fresh and vibrant flowers.

Clarke Titus of Rough South Home (roughsouthhome.com) summed up his relatively new career as a furniture designer and builder. For years, he’s gone to salvage yards and forest-free lumberyards and has created some truly incredible pieces of furniture. He’s dabbled as a golf pro, a cook and a writer but always came back to his workshop to take something unexpected and turn it into something cool.

Mark McDevitt and Robert Lee have been friends since college. After graduating, they did their own thing, designing for screen printing companies and t-shirt shops, as well as creating engaging illustrations for various local and national brands. After doing a bit of their own work on the side, they realized the potential of teaming up together. In 1998, Methane Studios (methanstudios.com) was born. Much of their early work still sustains them – silkscreen prints for music gigs. They’ve created incredible artwork for hundreds of artists, including Dave Matthews Band.

Virginia-Highland’s designer Kari Fisher (karifisherdesigns.com) crafts block prints for pillows and custom pieces. A lover of art history, Kari taught herself how to block print and when I asked what she loved about it, she shared that it’s “causal, flexible and imperfect.” As each imprint is done by hand, there will always be variations in coloring, texture and alignment.

The Virginia-Highland master plan was approved by resident vote at a recent meeting of NPU-F. The final tally was 72 votes for and 5 votes against. Adopted unanimously by the Virginia-Highland Civic Association Board of Directors in April, the plan is now being reviewed by the Atlanta City Council Community Development Committee and will then go on to the full council for adoption and inclusion in the City of Atlanta Comprehensive Development Plan.
