CELEBRATE SPRING, CELEBRATE LIFE

A

pril is one of my favorite months of the year which represents a rebirth and awakening from the depths of winter. Spring flowers are coming into bloom and New Yorkers can finally get out and enjoy the bounties of the season.

For our cover we chose the candid, witty and eternally upbeat Wendy Williams as our cover who has transformed herself physically and emotionally. As one of the most successful female talk show hosts in the country, Wendy dished on her weight loss, personal style, family life and her whirlwind of new projects. Dynamic, funny, honest and larger than life, Wendy Williams is a true inspiration. Our fashion and beauty spread this month was inspired by the colorful and fanciful bonnets of Easter and the Kentucky Derby, which was beautifully shot by Andrew Werner. This month we got to experience some of the new spring menus at some of our favorite spots in New York City to taste the best flavors of the season. From authentic cuisines of the Mediterranean to iconic New York steak houses, these are a true testament New York’s power dining scene. With warmer temperatures abound we had spring travel on our mind. This month took us to the far ends of the earth in search of adventure and luxurious retreats. We ventured to the primal and untouched Galapagos Islands where time seems to have stood still to the unspoiled and arid natural landscapes of South Africa. We lived the life of luxury in Lake Como and highlighted weekend getaways to Miami, Quebec, Philadelphia, and South Beach. Spring also marks the beginning of the social charity circuit with a whirlwind of soirees from New York to Miami. This month is all about celebrating the wonderful transformation of spring from our surroundings to change within ourselves.

BEHIND THE VELVET ROPE APRIL 2017

By Joe Alexander with Photographs by Patrick McMullan Hot New Broadway Shows & Movies The ever-fabulous Patti LuPone is back on Broadway playing beauty mogul Helena Rubinstein in the new musical War Paint. Her co-star is the irresistible Christine Ebersole who plays Elizabeth Arden; Rubinstein’s arch rival in the cosmetic world. This is a luminous night at the theatre where both stars chew up the scenery and belt out their numbers...It’s not only the ladies who are shining on the Great White Way, Jake Gyllenhaal is sexy in Sunday in the Park with George. The actor tackles the role of the revolutionary painter George Seurat who died at the age of 32 in 1891. This technologically stunning revival of this Stephen Sondheim musical has grown stronger with this new stage at the gloriously restored Hudson Theatre. The night I was there, Jake held up a handmade sign that said “Happy Birthday Mom.” So cute! …Movies are a lot cheaper than theatre tickets although the pickings are very slim this time of year. Scarlett Johansson who stars in the drama Ghost in the Shell based on the anime of the same name, confesses, “I definitely believe in plastic surgery. I don’t want to be an old hag. There’s no fun in that.”...Hugh Jackman stars in Logan, reprising his role as Wolverine, for what he claims is one last time and he might be telling the truth as he dies at the end of this killing spree. “Now I meet people with full-color Wolverine tattoos on their backs. Thank God I did okay, because I think if I hadn’t, they’d spit on me in the street.”... Sadly, Kong: Skull Island only scores when Kong fills the screen and I do mean fill the screen. You absolutely need to see this in 3D or forget it. The movie stars Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson who bombs as the dumb blonde. She says, “For some reason, chewing gum for me gets my brain going.” Chew more Brie, chew more. Marilyn Monroe & Joe DiMaggio Fans of Marilyn Monroe and Yankee Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio have a chance to buy some of his personal items in time for the opening month of baseball game season in April. M.S Rau Antiques has hit a home run by offering up the Clipper’s gold money clip for $25K (it was gifted to Joe at Yankee Stadium on October 1, 1949). Also for sale is a silver presentation tray by Cartier for $56K that was given to the baseball legend on his 70th Birthday. The final item is picture of DiMaggio at the funeral of his late wife Marilyn Monroe by Lawrence Schiller for $45K. rauantiques.com

every download – up to 1 million dollars. While Flom is passionate about music, the satisfaction from helping others can’t compare. “There’s a joy in helping somebody go from empty clubs to headlining a big arena, but being able to have an impact on even one person, getting them out of a prison that they don’t belong in and how it affects their family– that’s a different kind of joy.”

J

ason Flom is the powerhouse behind some of the hottest names in the music industry. As founder and CEO of Lava Records, he takes pride in watching his artists rise from obscurity. He has helmed several of the biggest labels and personally launched Katy Perry into superstardom. At the same time, Flom has devoted himself to fighting for social justice, working tirelessly to change people’s lives on an entirely different level. A founding member of the Innocence Project, Flom stands at the forefront of criminal justice reform. Dedicated to helping the wrongly convicted regain their freedom and rebuild their lives, Flom is a modern day hero – fighting for truth and justice, and doing it the American way. “From the time I was a young boy I had this almost primal need to help people who I found to be helpless. I can’t imagine being in a more helpless situation than to be trapped in the nightmare of a wrongful conviction, where you are actually innocent of a crime that you are accused, tried and convicted of and there’s no one there to help you,” Flom explains. His recent endeavor is the Wrongful Conviction podcast, where he shares shocking stories of innocent people who have spent decades in prison for crimes they didn’t commit. Now in its second season, Flom is hoping the podcast will continue to increase awareness and support for the cause. He is donating a dollar towards the Innocence Project for

The prolific kingmaker and fervent philanthropist is the son of the late Joseph Flom, famed takeover attorney and documented American success story, and Jason’s kids are following in the giant Flom footsteps. Allison, 22, is ardently involved in civil rights. High school junior Mike is already in the music business, having brought two artists to Lava – Cemetery Sun and Stanaj. As for the magic formula behind a superstar talent, Flom says music is subjective. “Once in a while you hear a song and your hair stands up. When I first met Lorde it was one of those moments.” He recalls, “David Geffen explained it as instincts. Everybody’s got them - it doesn’t mean you’re right - but if you don’t trust your instincts why would you expect anyone else to?” Advice that Flom can offer his children or anyone trying to find success comes through personal anecdotes. “If you’re sure you’re right – don’t take no for an answer. For instance Katy Perry - I met her and instantly had that tingly feeling like this girl’s going to be a star. When I went back and played it for my senior executives, the response was, ‘this is horrible - do not sign this’. The same is true with most of the biggest artists I’ve discovered. You have to be persistent.”

owadays, it is hard to find financial advisors that put their clients above their own profits. In some cases, people ended up broke or in jail because they chose to trust the wrong person. Wealth Manager Mark Doman, who is the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Member of The Doman Group, manages approximately $200 million in assets, is convinced that it does not have to be this way. “I genuinely believe that anybody who is hired to be someone’s trusted financial advisor should have the legal obligation to do what is best for the client, not what is simply suitable.”

RM: Tell us a little bit about the concept of the “family office”. MD: The concept is a simple one, which is that understanding your financial health is not just about your investments, it’s not just about your financial plan, your taxes or insurance, it’s about all four. The purpose of the “family office” is to be a holistic trusted advisor for wealthy individuals and families. RM: What makes the Doman Group special? How does it differ from other investment advisors? MD: We’re unique because we started by focusing on wealth management for very successful Gen X’ers and millennials. They include notable names in the worlds investment banking, entrepreneurship, sports and entertainment. What makes us special is that we treat all of our clients, no matter their public profile, like ordinary people. Another big differentiator is that we are registered with the SEC

32 | resident.com

as an investment advisor, which means we have a legal obligation to look out for our clients’ best interests for their investments. RM: What are the advantages of working the Doman Group compared to a bank or large investment company? MD: Our position is a simple one - which is for a client to house their assets at a big bank, but to obtain their investment advice independently from an advisor with a fiduciary duty to their clients. Then, that client has the security of a big bank holding their money, but they’re also getting truly independent investment advice from us, as we are subject to the SEC’s Fiduciary Duty rule, where we have to objectively do what’s in a client’s best interests. If I worked inside in one of the banks as an advisor, our investment advice would be measured by what is simply suitable, not what is objectively best for the client. I think it’s a big advantage to

know that your advisor has to do what is best, not what is simply suitable for their clients.. RM: What is your process with people? MD: My process always starts with understanding that person individually as well as their family dynamics. It’s about knowing your client very deeply. I believe what you have to do is build is a financial plan before you can build an investment plan, and knowing their family dynamics is a big part of that. RM: How do you then keep your clients? MD: We don’t have any marketing. We have no sales team. We have no business development team. We focus purely on servicing our clients. We hold onto our clients, we service them, we talk to them constantly and they’re very proud of what we do for them, so we are flattered when they tell their friends about us. www.domangroup.com or markdoman1 (Twitter)

MANAGING YOUR FINANCIAL RISK By Mark Seruya

A

s individuals, we all have different preferences when it comes to risk. Extreme sport enthusiasts, for instance, try inventive new twists on traditional activities, such as kitesurfing, BASE jumping (an acronym for building, antenna, span, earth), and snowboarding on rough terrain for adrenaline-pumping thrills. These pursuits all are inherently dangerous because of the uncontrollable variables at play. For many of us, however, the risk associated with these sports carries less appeal. As investors, our preferences for risk often can dictate our investment strategy. When it comes to our finances, we typically look to our long-term goals rather than short-term thrills. Few of us are willing to jeopardize our savings, our emergency reserves, our kids’ college money, or our retirement funds on risky ventures. The question of risk management is one of the most important considerations for our portfolios. As investors, we seek to maximize returns and minimize risk, ensuring that our investment losses never exceed acceptable boundaries and account for variables as much as possible. As a first step, we must decide how tolerant to volatility we are, a calculation that depends on our age, our income, our portfolio, and our anticipated future needs. Are we conservative, balanced, or aggressive? Typically, a young person is likely to be more aggressive, and someone nearing retirement more conservative. This calculation should be a logical, not emotional, one; it should be based on our life circumstances, not necessarily our temperament. Just because we have tried skydiving doesn’t mean we should be an aggressive investor. Once that equation emerges, here are some additional considerations: Diversification: A portfolio constructed of different kinds of investments is key to long-term returns. For example, one might consider bonds and growth stocks if retirement is a ways off, and solid dividend stocks and fixed income if the proverbial rocking

34 | resident.com

chair looms in the near future. International investments in strong companies, poised for growth, particularly in countries with vibrant economies, and assets easily and quickly converted to cash to take advantage of new investment opportunities that may arise in the short term should also be considered as components of a balanced portfolio. Position sizing: Determining how much of a stock to own and adjusting it to reflect risk is essential and can best be calculated by a professional advisor who will take your risk tolerance and a host of market factors into account. Valuation: The process of estimating the worth of an asset or company in order to know how and how much to invest in it. Some parameters for consideration include the company’s management, capital structure, liabilities, and market value. Exit strategies: Two types of exit strategies exist – making a gain, or “take-profit,” and taking a loss, “stop-loss.” Both require presetting a point at which you will withdraw from the investment. This procedure enhances your chances of growing your portfolio as you eliminate emotion and reduce risk. Our lives are full of risks. We purchase auto insurance to protect us from the dangers of driving, and homeowner’s insurance to protect our homes. When we participate in sports – hopefully – we wear helmets and pads and take all possible precautions to stay safe. And with our hard-earned money, we take the advice of experts: we establish a balanced and prudent portfolio that safeguards as it grows our wealth.

LYSS STERN

Motherhood is a B#TCH By Bennett Marcus

Odd Mom Out

J

ill Kargman, who writes and stars in the hit TV show Odd Mom Out, was delighted to write the forward for her friend Lyss Stern’s new book, “Motherhood Is A B#TCH: 10 Steps to Regaining Your Sanity, Sexiness, and Inner Diva,” out April 18. “It was so heartfelt and real about how she felt as a mom, as a first time mom and how she reclaimed herself back,” Stern says, clearly touched. Reclaiming Your Life The message behind the book, says Stern, is that once you become a mom, you don’t have to lose sight of who you are. “For me and for so many other moms out there, between working and taking care of the kids, and whether or not you’re a stay at home mom, so much of it becomes about the kids. And you forget about you as the woman and you forget about you as the wife.” It’s about reclaiming your life. It offers tips about nutrition, date nights, shopping for lingerie, and letting yourself breathe. It’s also, Stern says, hilarious, with chapters like “Get Your Sh-t Together” and “You’ve Got a Mouth, Use It.” She emphasizes that most of the tips are things you can do on your own that don’t cost any money. “That’s the whole beauty of the book. We’re not telling you to go to Chanel and drop X amount, we’re really giving you tidbits that you could put into your real life each and every day, for moms everywhere.” Divalysscious Moms Stern knows from giving moms advice. Thirteen years ago she founded Divalysscious Moms, a networking company specifically for moms, with cool, chic, kid-friendly activities like a grand opening of the Fendi Kids boutique on Fifth Avenue. There is usually swag in the form of gift bags, but most important, you get to have fun, and to meet other moms.

36 | resident.com

Jill Kargman and Lyss Stern

Upper East Side Moms New mothers, especially, often feel isolated; Stern was there herself, and that’s how she came up with the idea. When her first son, Jackson, was born, Stern went to a new mother’s luncheon on the Upper East Side, and attendees couldn’t talk to one another or socialize, and the woman running it said, “Today we’re going to teach you how to breastfeed,” and a light bulb went off in her head. “This is where you went to ‘meet’ new moms,” says Stern, now a mother of three, “but yet you weren’t allowed to talk to the new moms, the babies weren’t allowed to cry, and I was horrified by what I found.” She had an epiphany; her call to action would be to help other moms. She just had to figure out how. “Fifty Shades of Grey” At that time, there were only a handful of Mommy blogs, so she was something of a pioneer. But ever since she was a girl, Stern has always been ahead of trends. DivaMoms launched E.L. James’s “Fifty Shades of Grey” book before anyone had heard of it. The events started as a grassroots movement, and her mom friends told their friends, and today, Divalysscious Moms reaches over one million moms directly. They call it an offline community, because they hold events all around New York

City and in the Hamptons. “Companies hire us to bring the moms in, because they’re tastemakers, they’re influencers, sometimes before it even officially opens to the public,” Stern explains. Stokke Strollers Divalysscious Moms has launched everything from UPPAbaby Strollers to Stokke Strollers, which is part of an “influencer program.” “We gift moms strollers, diaper bags, whatever it may be that’s new and fabulous, and then they’re walking around on the street with it. And then every mom sees it and wants it. It’s similar to what the celebrities do, but we do it in the moms’ world.” Super Saturday Her entrepreneurial endeavors include giving back; for ten years, she has run the children’s area at Super Saturday, the annual Hamptons ovarian cancer research fundraiser. It’s called Camp Divalysscious and features face painting, magic shows and more, plus activities for parents as well. Stern is also working with her husband to create a comedy television show called #NanaDoll about her widowed mother, who she says is a real character. www.divamoms.com

DR. FOX & JILL CARUSO By Bennett Marcus

Exotic Veins s one of New York’s top vascular surgeons, Dr. David Fox not only treats the full spectrum of vein disease in spots like the legs, this board-certified physician is the one that people seek out for more specialized work. “We also take care of veins in what are sort of exotic locations,” Dr. Fox says. “Many people get spider veins on their face, around their nose; where the nose meets the cheek is a very common area. We also have patients that develop veins on their forehead or on their temple region, or on the side of their head.” “Veins on the hands, veins on the face, these are not veins that are going to be taken care of by the average practitioner. These, what they call exotic veins, are really the domain of the specialist such as myself.” Likewise, he adds, people sometimes have prominent veins on their feet, and he is able to do procedures to make your feet have a more youthful appearance.

A

New Anti Aging Techniques Dr. Fox uses state-of-the-art noninvasive techniques, a vast improvement over the traditional method, called “vein stripping,” which is a very uncomfortable procedure requiring a lot of recovery time. He instead performs what is called an endovenous laser ablation in which he can treat the vein in a minimally invasive way through a needle hole incision. This can be done in the office, the patient doesn’t have to go to the hospital, and it’s a much easier recovery period. The patient is up walking the same day and they’re usually back to work within another day or so, Dr. Fox says. “Less is More“ Working alongside Dr. Fox at his Upper East Side practice is Jill Caruso, RN, a board certified aesthetic nurse who specializes in non-invasive and minimally invasive anti-aging treatments and clinical skin care. As clinical cosmetic director, she softens the signs of aging using injectable fillers, neurotoxins, chemical peels, lasers, and Kybella. Vascular treatments and anti-aging care often complement one another. An example is some-

one bothered by bulging veins in their hands. “It’s not uncommon that a person will get a facial rejuvenation procedure to look younger, say Botox or wrinkle fillers or Kybella,” Dr. Fox says. “And if you put their hands up next to their face you can see their age by looking at their hands, so I do procedures that would be considered hand rejuvenation where we make a more youthful appearance to the hands.” “Less is more” is Jill’s philosophy in using cosmetic injectables, keeping a client looking like their natural, beautiful, self and not overdoing it. That’s what people seek her out for, and she has even turned patients away if their esthetic is not what she thinks is best for them. “I don’t do it if it’s not going to fit their face,” she says. “The Golden Ratio,” To assess a patient’s face, she uses something called “The Golden Ratio,” which Leonardo Da Vinci used, and many plastic surgeons use today. With it, she measures the face to can see where they might be lacking something, or where something might be a little bit asymmetrical. She can fix that with cosmetic injectables. Jill is one of only 220 practitioners with credentials from the Plastic Surgery Nursing Board. The mother of two regularly participates in medical and aesthetic meetings, workshops and seminars to stay abreast of

the latest advances. Celebrity Touch Dr. Fox opened Fox Vein Care in 2007, devoted to restoring beauty from the inside out. He teaches surgery residents and medical students at Lenox Hill Hospital, where he is an attending physician, and is a sought-after lecturer at national medical conferences, hospitals, and special interest groups all over the country. Dr. Fox received his medical degree at Boston University School of Medicine, graduating Cum Laude in 1991, and completed his residency in surgery at the University of Rochester, where many nationally and internationally known vascular surgeons practice. During a post-residency fellowship at Loyola University in Chicago, he was awarded first prize in the 1997 Chicago Vascular Research Forum competition. While in Medical school he was awarded the Dora Savenor Memorial Prize for Excellence in Surgery. Although they declined to mention names, both Dr. Fox and Jill have treated highprofile actors, models, celebrities and socialites. They also have many international patients. 1041 Third Avenue New York, NY 10065 212.362.3470 www.Foxvein.com

F

rank, funny, and honest Wendy Williams has a personality larger than Manhattan with an uncanny wit that’s as sharp as a samurai’s sword. Known for her opinionated advice given to celebrities making tabloid headlines, Wendy’s appeal is not only her celebrity dish but her selfdeprecating honesty proving she’s a real person with flaws, and not just a celebrity talk show host on a pedestal. A testament to her popularity around the country, she is now in her ninth season The Wendy Williams show is already in its 9th season and renewed through 2020. Here Resident Magazine sat down with the dynamic and energetic Diva of Dish as she spoke about her latest projects, family life, successful dieting and her personal style. And if you can’t get enough of Wendy, tune in on weekdays at 10 am on Fox Network. RM: Tell me a bit about the businesses you’re involved in- wigs, jewelry, clothingyou do it all! WW: Ok, the wig thing didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to although I thought would be my best outside business. The problem is that people want the wigs to look like my wigs. I’m wild and messy, but mine are not wigs straight from the book, people don’t understand that. Though my wig started from the books, I put three pounds of hair in, dyed it and put the highlights in it, and cut baby hair. And my Wendy wigs didn’t quite reflect the wigs I wear. But my clothing line has worked out very, very well especially with having a TV show where I can wear the pieces that appeal to women of a wide age gap. I started with the pencil dress, wrap skirts, and wrapped dresses and the next thing was outerwear. And now, I’m tipping my foot into home decor, which I’m very excited about because there is nothing better than great throws and sheets and cute things to put on your sink to hold your stuff. You could go anywhere with home decor and it is very, very true to me. I’m a nester and nesting all the time. So that is one of my big outside successes, as well as my production company. We’ve done a

few really good things. Aailyah was Lifetime’s 2014 most watched movie. Whether you liked it or you hated it, you know that was one of our movies. I had a successful series on the Investigation Discovery channel. RM: Tell me a bit about the novels you’ve written. WW: I have three novels, it’s a trilogy, and my heroine’s name was Red Harper and she’s a radio personality in New York and she’s just really something else. The bitch you love to hate. I would love to make that a movie for TV. Or maybe a series. Also I have another novel, my main heroine is Kim Kind and she is a high power attorney who went to New York, ran into a pill problem, and falls in love with a bad boy. I would love to turn that into a movie or a series, but I don’t want to act in any of them. You have to nail the right deals and you just can’t jump on anything. And that is where I’m glad that the show has come on into my life. Though it came a little bit later on in life, I have an appreciation for family and I would say I know exactly who I am. I don’t need to twerk at two o’clock in the morning anymore. Well, once a month I do that. But you know in my 20s that was the 7 day a week thing. I’ve done it… I’ve lived. Going back to money, I respect this game, but I also respect good business partnerships. And I have no respect for a fast bug that is going to come back and bite me in the neck behind. We all stand to make more money. Well, except for the billionaires. Fortunately my husband and I we’re on the same page regarding yes, no, yes, no. Even our son gets that, he’s not easily impressed. RM: How do your novels resonate with your fans? WW: I think that in describing sex scenes and things like that people don’t necessarily look at me as that way, which I don’t know why. How does it resonate? They resonate well. I had a couple on the NYT’s best seller list which is always nice, a little feather

in the cap. I’ve done seven books and I’d like to do more. I always work with a writing partner. I only have a few hours in a day to pull together the thoughts, and you get on the phone with your partner and talk it out and we make the deadline with the publisher. RM: How closely do your characters reflect your own life? WW: Each book has a piece of me in it. My first book was an autobiography which came out in 2001, Wendy’s Got the Heat. I’ve got more to write about though. Before I got my talk show, I remember my own mother, read my own book behind a cover of a fake book while laying on the beach because she was embarrassed. I talked about drugs, infidelity, and everything I wanted to talk about. But if the book isn’t necessarily for her, then don’t read it. And then, Kim Kind comes from a low background but was a highly educated woman, who falls for this guy and everybody is like “Why?” and that would be my husband. And then regarding the radio DJ character, she was at the top of her game, and there are a lot of similarities with us, except for the parts that I don’t choose to play out loud, cursing people out, getting shot in front of the dry cleaners, getting a talk show, and each character has a little bit of me. RM: How has motherhood and family life changed you? WW: Well, first of all, I realized his junior prom is coming up in one week. Yet my 16 year old son has no interest in junior prom. He’s very, very college-minded which I know that I was at his age, too. He drove himself to his job this past weekend with his driving instructor. He has a bit of a social life and he runs track. You know what, it sounds cliché but in family you cannot think about yourself all the time. This is a business that can make you think about yourself all the time.

Anybody treats it special. It’s such a stupid lie in a forest. In terms if you drink the coolaid It’s not good. So, living in Jersey and going back to my family is very grounding. I feel sorry for people who don’t have that especially at my particular point in life. Now, if you’re twenty years old, twerk. Have fun. If you’re in your thirties still kinda have fun, but at some particular point you have to turn the music down and turn up a real life for yourself. Whatever that real life is, I’m not judging. It doesn’t mean getting married or even having a significant other. It’s a great group of friends, I mean, that’s not my path, because I find it’s not the celebrity that changes, everybody around is what changes. Which sucks. RM: Tell me a bit about your diet, you’ve slimmed down quite a bit. What’s the secret? WW: I lost 50 pounds that was no secret. My hair is thin, too thin for what I needed to be for a showgirl. I’m a big woman, a big personality and we can’t have what we want, unless we buy it. The first step was getting on the scale which read 195 pounds. I had no idea. That’s not the most I’ve weighed in my life, I hit 297 pounds when I delivered my son, but I’m tall and I carried it like a champ. But, I did not want to go into 50, weighing 195 pounds because from what I hear when you turn 50, and I was 48 at the time, everything changes. In my mind, I though “Oh my god!” on my 51st birthday my vagina is gonna dry up, I will no longer be able to lose weight, my breasts will drop to the floor and all this horrible stuff. So I took two years to lose the weight, slow and steady is the name of the game. I don’t break a sweat, a little Pilates here and there. Take the top bun off, and since I’m not allergic to anything, there was nothing that I cut out of my diet. Instead of eating the whole bag I only have two or three twizzlers for now and then eat the rest later. Just moderation. And know I weigh a healthy 145. I’m 52 now, so I kept it for 2 years. Now, our family has been vegetarian for almost 2 years. And that has helped to keep it off I would imagine. Don’t have high

blood pressure. I feel very healthy. I keep a fruitful, intimate life. And I also have a pretty youthful spirit. It starts with the mind. I love to laugh and I love to have a good time. I have a healthy balance of both. I know how to get my work done otherwise this wouldn’t have happened. I have an app coming out too by the way. It’s being beta tested right now. And so far, so good. People are loving it. The app will show me outside doing things that I normally do in my regular life, like taking pottery lessons. RM: How would you describe your style? WW: My personal style for the most part is very uniformed. Monday through Friday. I wear the same thing, but I have multiple colors. I love this particular long sleeve t-shirt, it displays my breasts very well. And I also have it in a turtle neck. This pair of leggings I happen to like very much because there’s no seam up the front. And these are my sneakers and my pompom from Wendy & HSN. What I do believe in is I believe in the best bags, the best coats, the best JEWELRY. This is what I also love about the partnership with HSN, if you go out and you spend $800 on a dress you have to think about proper wear. I didn’t grow up rich. So, that mentality stays in your mind. And I think it’s healthy. = If I pay $800 for this dress, and by the way it’s pink and red zebra striped, everybody is going to remember this damn dress. I can’t afford to buy a dress and then only wear it one time. So I buy a uniform. This is easy in the morning. Just throw on a wig and jump out into the car and then I’m here and they beautify me. When the day is over, I can’t wait to take it all off, hit the streets and head to the grocery store and other things that I have to do. That is my basic style for going to work on weekdays. There is something about circulation. Jeans aren’t my favorite thing but when the time is right I love jeans, a t-shirt and heels with good make-up and a good bag. My style is simple, but if you squint there’s a lot of luxury. But you don’t see it. Because all you see is black leggings and a black t-shirt. And I have multiples of these. If you love something, I have 25 of them. I don’t like color. Black and black. The color is in my personality.

Red leggings show dimples in your behind. I don’t want to have to think. It’s so easy. And with all the stuff here in the wardrobe, all the stuff at home I joke with my husband every time “Why do I stand in my closet trying to decide what to wear? We just go to what I like.” I like negligees. Neither my son nor my husbandare not embarrassed by it. I would never do anything to embarrass them but I certainly do have fun with fashion and I don’t take myself that seriously. When I have to go out in the evening sometimes I get something from wardrobe here and sometimes I get something at home. Look, I have a talk show. Even if I look like a mess, I will see you again tomorrow at 10am, and you always have the chance to come back with something else. I don’t feel the pressure to look my best all the time. I mean, it is what it is. But the other thing, losing that 50 pounds has really made it nice to jump into anything. I no longer have to say does this make my butt look big or how does this look or I’m not wearing this, “Oh my god the wardrobe”-discussions in the morning used to be horrendous. And I don’t have a perfect body or anything, I know I still have my flaws, but it’s as good as it’s going to get and I like it. Even when I was a bigger girl though, in my 20s, when I met my husband I weighed 225, I always had dates. It’s all about the personality. You know, for whatever it’s with, it starts with the personality and a brighter look on life, making eye contact. Girls think it’s all about weight and you have to lose weight or even it’s all about education. You have to graduate with a four-year degree and then get your masters. No. I never had a problem with any boyfriends. Even when I was bigger. Never. That’s how I met my husband. I was a big girl. And I was having fun. I was popular on the radio. I always knew that I was going to work my way to the person I am inside. And we don’t use a home decorator. I would never have somebody decorate our home. It’s a very personal space. We have a dog that I love. A Cane Corso. He is a house dog. He is big. He was also my model for a day.

DINING OUT By Nina Kullman

W

ith the transition to spring, some of our favorite restaurants are unveiling their new menus to reflect the bounty of the season. We delved into some of our favorite steakhouses as well as authentic Mediterranean haunts that felt like we traveled to Rome and the Greek Islands and visited a LES hotspot that reflects the diverse flavors of the neighborhood.

ANTICA PESA www.anticapesa.com When in Rome or Brooklyn, there’s Antica Pesa- a modern Italian restaurant located in the hip neighborhood of Williamsburg which is the sister restaurant to their original location in Trastevere, an equally happening neighborhood in Rome. The menu consists of typical Roman dishes served in a relaxed and fun atmosphere while its animated owner, Francesco Panella, bounces from table to table ensuring everyone is enjoying their dining experience. As for the dishes themselves what can we say, other than come hungry! Antipasti consisted of prosciutto di Parma, served with fresh Bufala mozzarella in a filo crust, and grilled octopus with creamy mashed potatoes. Advancing to the pasta dish, their signature spaghetti cacio e pepe, was prepared to perfection and the main event, beef cheek cooked in a red wine sauce served with creamy polenta rounded out the already outstanding meal. It’s an evening to remember when dining at Antica Pesa where you’ll find the wine list strictly Italian, the ambience magical, and the crowd beautiful. – By Lisa Loverro

CLANCEY www.clanceynyc.com Clancey is one of the newest hotspots to open in the Lower East Side that features delicious elevated comfort fare in an eclectic and lively atmosphere serving dinner and weekend brunch. Named for its proximity to Delancey, Clancey reflects the diverse heritage of the neighbourhood by incorporating Jewish, Latin and Asian influences in their comfort fare with a global twist. Cleverly named entrees such as Something Wrapped in Bacon on a Toothpick, The Best Chicken Satay You Ever Ate, Chargrilled Oysters, or an Obligatory Burger are as mouthwatering as they sound. This tongue in cheek humor also applies to their creative cocktail menu as well with dangerously delicious bespoke concoctions aptly named Drunk at Gray’s Papaya or Who’s Watching My Kids? As weekend brunch is a New York institution, get your decadence on with dishes like Fried Chicken Challah French Toast and an About to Be Famous Green Bloody Mary with vodka, tomatillo, celery, cucumber and Ancho Reyes. The dining room reflects the cool and eclectic vibe of the Lower East Side with exposed brick walls, reclaimed wood floors, tin ceilings, and a wall decorated in a collage of vintage movie posters from the 50s and 60s in this dynamic neighborhood that continues to flourish. – By Hillary Latos

agatelle in New York City is one of the most wonderful restaurants for a lively brunch, scrumptious lunch or a romantic dinner. The restaurant exudes an elegantly understated chic French ambience, inviting guests to not only enjoy their meal but also to embark on a culinary journey. With establishments in the some of the hottest locations around the world, such as Miami, St Tropez, Saint Barth, and Dubai, the brand has a loyal jetset following. “We try to put together the best plates we have everywhere,” explains Nicolas Frezal, who is the Executive Chef of Bagatelle in the Meatpacking District. “The Tartare de Thon Bagatelle with lime soy vinaigrette and avocado salad and the Steak Tartare Croustillant with crispy rice cakes is one of Bagatelle’s signatures.” Executive Chef Nicolas Frezal grew up in the South of France and was raised in Montpellier. At the age of 14 he started his culinary training. After he earned his culinary degree, Nicolas Frezal worked at Le Castel Ronceray in Montpellier, Hotel Restaurant Le Meurice and Restaurant L’ami Jean. Later he moved to New York where he worked at Daniel Boulud’s namesake restaurant Daniel and Jean Georges’, The Mark, until he joined Bagatelle NY in 2014. During this time, he stayed true to his roots. However, he developed a passion for other nation’s specialties, as well. “New York is a very interesting city. You find things that you can’t find in France. You have Mexican food, Italian food, French food. It’s a special place where everything comes together!” Still, some things remain the same. When Resident Magazine asked him about his most iconic dish he immediately answered: “The Truffle Roasted Chicken!” It seems even after all this time, this famous dish is and will remain Bagatelle’s classic go-to culinary piece de resistance. His favorite plate, however, is something entirely different. “I like the Salade Bagatelle. I love the vinaigrette.” Both dishes are incredibly tempting, but Nicolas Frezal let us in on a secret: “Tuna, mussels and lobster are the “it” ingredients for this Spring season. The linguine lobster features a special tomato sauce that really sets Bagatelle’s Spring menu apart from other restaurants in New York.” After one visit to Bagatelle you will be hooked on Nicolas Frezal’s gastronomic creations, which will rapture you and send you on an incomparable taste adventure. www.bistrotbagatelle.com

BOBBY VAN’S STEAKHOUSE Central Park South Welcomes Iconic Steakhouse By Elizabeth Darwen

B

obby Van’s Steakhouse has earned its place as a venerable New York institution, thanks in part to a continued commitment to cooking techniques perfected years ago by the founding fathers of New York steakhouse cuisine. Celebrating its 48th Anniversary this 2017, Bobby Van’s has grown from its original home in Bridgehampton, NY, and now includes a repertoire of ten fine restaurants that offer the refined style of a classic New York City steakhouse. The newest addition is Bobby Van’s on 40 Central Park South, a highly coveted location just steps away from the Plaza Hotel, and overlooking Central Park. The new restaurant officially opened its doors in late March 2017, inviting diners to the same exquisitely prepared dining experience as its sister restaurants, in addition to a special Saturday and Sunday brunch. The new restaurant is proud to announce Executive Chef Ted Rozzi who has crafted a menu of delectable dishes such as Crispy Calamari, Lemon Pepper Shrimp and Maxie’s Meatballs for Starter and Veal Milanese, Chilean Seabass and N.Y. Sirloin Steak for Entrée. The restaurant also

offers a wide variety of dining options outside of prime beef and seafood, including supremely-prepared pastas, wood-fired pizzas and freshly tossed salads. To accompany the meal, diners have a choice of delicious sides, which include Cauliflower Carbonara, Thick Cut Applewood Bacon and Sautéed Mushrooms. A quintessential steakhouse, Bobby Van’s is at the roots of the New York steakhouse family tree, with strong employee connections to original famed eateries. It is restaurants like Bobby Van’s that have inspired a legion of imitators, but Bobby Van’s still shines as a premier authentic steakhouse. When restaurateur and Chef Robert Dickert - the great-nephew of steakhouse legend Peter Luger - joined the Bobby Van’s team in 1996, he brought with him a wealth of family knowledge and tradition. These traditions of quality food and superior customer service are still the hallmark of Bobby Van’s dining experience today. Dickert remains at Bobby Van’s where he helps to oversee the all-important process of selecting and dry aging the kitchen’s quality prime beef. The process of dry aging its USDA prime qual-

ity beef is key to developing the superior flavor of Bobby Van’s’ steaks, which they do “the old fashioned way”. Once the team has carefully selected well-raised and well-marbled steak, it is aged in a specially-designed, humidity-controlled room for up to 28 days, which tenderizes it and enriches the flavor. Prime beef aside, the kitchen imports the majority of their seafood from overseas, selecting only the best. The tuna is sourced from the Maldives, the Branzino from Spain, and the salmon from Scotland. Locally, Bobby Van’s seafood supplier has a fleet of 30 fishing boats providing the kitchen with the freshest fish and shellfish daily. Bobby Van’s décor is elegant yet warm with white table cloths and wood accents. It is the ideal dining destination for an intimate dinner as well as for larger groups or special occasions. The Central Park location offers beautiful views in a convenient and central location. 40 Central Park South, New York www.bobbyvans.com

o as Elsa Pataky, wife of Home and Away star Chris Hemsworth, and add a dash of chicness and convenience to your lunch, picnic or snack time with the colorful bento-style lunchbox from Yumbox. The stylish container is designed for convenient lunching on the go and is made with high quality, super durable, BPA-free, food-safe materials. While Yumbox is fun to use and a pleasure to pack, it is also an educational tool that helps children develop healthy eating habits. Yumbox not only cleans easily and saves money, it also helps reduce waste. Its original design features a bento-like tray with one lid that seals all compartments, designated food groups to encourage and assist in packing a balanced meal, for built-in portion control. Founders, Maia Neumann & Daniela Devitt, are both proponents of the Mediterranean diet which reinforces moderation and balance. Their hope is that Yumbox will be a great tool to easily integrate those concepts into your lifestyle. Inspiration came from the French school lunches served to Maia’s children daily. The emphasis in France is on balance, variety, taste and nutrition. Yumbox was dreamed up to allow everyone to replicate that same balance and nutrition, regardless of where they live. Yumbox comes in 4 variations, with an option for every occasion: Yumbox Original contains 6 compartments (five ½ cup portions + dip), Yumbox Panino contains 4 compartments (one 2 cup + two ½ cup portions + dip, Yumbox Tapas contains 4 & 5 compartments (larger portions, 3.5 cups), and Yumbox MiniSnack contains 3 compartments (one ¾ cup + 1/3 cup portions + dip). www.yumboxlunch.com

ere a dictionary to exist based on the popular associations certain words have for us, this is likely how it would read. The very mention of South Africa culls forth televised moments, debate-worthy issues and the headlines that informed our youth. For many, South Africa has become no more than a metaphor – a place on the map that has been relegated to serve as a symbol for post-apartheid, a remote destination located somewhere between the History Channel and National Geographic, a series of exotic mental images accompanied either by Peter Gabriel’s Biko or by a faux ethnic soundtrack born in Hollywood. Of course, there exists another South Africa – one whose diverse landscape remains in constant dialogue with its many enduring cultures, one replete in memorable images, tastes, sounds and scents, one that leaves a permanent mark on our understanding of

precisely the sort of lost world that the novel’s main character, Jessica Stilwell, would have occupied. The property is built on a former estate that retains both its colonial whimsy and grandeur. It is the kind of luxury that exudes permanence, the kind that could only have been conceived under a social order that thought itself invincible.

Leaving the metropolis is like departing in search of other planets – it’s an awe-inspiring adventure to unknown worlds where no two regions even remotely resemble “Jo’burg” or, for that matter, one another. Unlike the Grand Canyon, Blyde River Canyon is a verdant series of gorges and water-sculpted landmasses spanning nearly sixteen miles in length and 2,500 feet in depth. From the aptly named, ‘God’s Window,’ one can take in the geographical work of art known as Bourke’s Luck Pothole. This ethereal canvas painted by centuries of kolks and plunge pools shimmers with the rusty golden hues of Yves Klein’s Fire Paintings. Acknowledged as the most environmentally friendly lodge in Africa, Sabi Sabi’s Earth Lounge blends meticulously with its surroundings. It is an elaborate bird’s nest with a turtle’s protective shell. The property opens onto a panoramic view of endless bushveld - its 13 highend suites each coming complete with plunge pool, and remarkable wooden sculptures. Here luxury and utter wilderness coexist without compromising the integrity of either. Still, no nature program or drive-through ‘habitat,’ can prepare you for being in eating proximity of a predatory species. A stray leopard casually strolls through the compound. We pretend to go about our business as the ‘majestic local’ warily passes us and moves on.

Johannesburg’s Apartheid Museum reaffirms my theory. With films, audios, and vivid testimonies exploring the rise and fall of apartheid, the interactive museum is anything but a prosaic account of history. Rather, it is a time-machine, catapulting one into the periods preceding, during and following apartheid. A visit to Constitutional Hill and the notorious Old Fort makes a perfect adjunct to this journey. It was in this former prison where Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi had been incarcerated. To understand the present, I turn to the Wits Art Museum whose astonishing collection underscores the recent growth of significant art and the evolving pool of local talent.

Another noteworthy homage to achievement is The Jazz Walk of Fame –a local ‘walk of stars’ devoted to the many influential artists who made Jo’burg’s music scene one that’s unparalleled anywhere on the continent. Seeing Mandela’s statue adorn the square bearing his name, it’s apparent that his vision of a thriving democratic state has come to fruition.

With recherché trappings, private steam rooms, state-of-the-art gym, library, art gallery, meditation garden, Spa, and an elegant dining area that sports a top-notch wine cellar and exquisite cuisine, it is a camouflaged oasis in the highgrass. GALAPAGOS ISLANDS Cruising Through the Enchanted Islands By Samina Quaglia & Silvia Leon

onsidered the trip of a lifetime for many experienced travelers, the Galapagos Islands are a place that should be added to anyone’s Bucket List. This famously known archipelago, located about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, is notorious for its enigmatic wildlife, volcanic formations and its underwater marine biodiversity, that has been considered one of the biggest and richest in the world, and was the first place declared by the UNESCO as a Natural World Heritage Site in 1978. There are a group of 19 large islands and plenty more islets that seem to be lost in time, where diversity and purity are the welcoming factors. No wonder they are also known as the “Enchanted Islands”. While the volcanic landscapes do not seem inviting at first, there is more than meets

It’s location on the Equator has its advantages, and one of them is having an average temperature of 24C all-year around, which makes it the perfect place to visit any time of the year. Just a two-hour flight from Quito, this paradise lies in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The arriving port is Baltra, which in the past served as an American airbase to guard the Panama Canal. Additionally, you can also arrive at San Cristobal Island Airport. Tourists will be welcomed in the airport by their respective lodging companies. The easiest way to get the best out of this amazing and unique experience is aboard a cruise. By law, no more than 100-capacity vessels are al-

He started DJing when he was only nine years old because his parents owned several nightclubs. However, originally David Stollow wanted to pursue another career. In fact, his dream was to be a professional hockey player. Still, his ambitions always included a passion for music which is why he ended up to be a DJ. “Music is truly the essence of life,” David says. “I love being diverse, and have always enjoyed knowing all genres of music.” After he started working in the social event market, he met Allen Dalton. Over the last

two years, Dalton started managing him, but they have known each other for several years before that, as well. Dave is convinced that “With today’s technology, everyone thinks they are a DJ,” which makes it even harder to be successful in the DJ market. Despite that, thanks to his multitude of skills, David managed to differentiate himself from other DJs. He has worked in every format from Reel to Reel, turntables/ vinyl, CDs, DATs and today’s digital technology. Even though DJ technology has changed over the years, it is thanks to David’s astonishing skills that he is able to work with any equipment, which eventually set himself apart from his competitors. Additionally, knowing how to mix and control the flow of any event or club for the entire night, turned into his second set of secret skills. “I play for the room, not myself,” he says. His uniqueness also originates from making his own remixes and edits. Finally, he believes that the key to being a good DJ is vast knowledge of all arts and genres, and knowing what people want to hear. According to Dave, due to social media and the digital age it is easier to make a name for yourself as a DJ nowadays. At the same time, however, you will find more amateurs than people who committed them-

selves to DJing as a profession. Obviously, David has already played at countless parties, but his favorite one that he has ever done was at the Orlando Convention Center for Pharmaceutical Industry. Over 10,000 people from 88 countries attended the spectacle. Plus, the event featured Donna Summers. Another event that he genuinely enjoyed to DJ for was the Billboard Music Awards. Some of his other big time parties he has worked have included Bill Clinton and Tony Blair’s wife’s birthday parties, Joey McIntyre and Harvey Weinstein’s weddings, and parties for Michael J. Fox and Donald Trump. In regard of his personal favorite artists, David names Michael Jackson, Pitbull and C&C Music Factory. When asking him for his personal entertainment inspiration, David names music legend Billy Joel. “His music transcends decades, and he is proof that great performers are timeless,” David says. SUNSET BOULEVARD SIZZLES, Mamet Fizzles and More on Stage By Barry Bassis

lenn Close won a Tony Award for playing Norma Desmond in “Sunset Boulevard” on Broadway 22 years ago. Now, Close is back in a new production that was performed in London last year and she is better than ever. The musical is based on the 1950 Billy Wilder film about a star from the silent film era, who deludes herself into thinking that she can make a comeback. She brings in a

behalf of the boy. Huh? Newspapers, the medical licensing board, and assorted lawyers are all lined up to punish a doctor for not coming to court on behalf of a mass murderer. Mamet doesn’t provide a clue as to what Charles is supposed to say on the stand that will help his former patient. “The Penitant” is a series of two actor scenes, in which

down-on-his-heels screenwriter to punch up the script she has written and the show begins, as does the movie, with his dead body floating in the pool. He then narrates the rest, which the audience knows is not going to be a pleasant nostalgia trip.

Charles meets with his own attorney, the boy’s lawyer (who quizzes Charles about his religious beliefs) and with his wife. None of it rings true or has any dramatic interest. Chris Bauer does what he can with the role of Charles but Rebecca Pidgeon is rather stiff as his wife.

The movie featured a once-in-a-lifetime performance by Gloria Swanson, who had been a silent film star and her chauffeur and former director was played by Erich von Stroheim (who had directed her in “Queen Kelly”). Cecil B. DeMille, who had directed a number of her successes and whom she is counting on to facilitate her return to films, played himself.

For a topical play with a point and clever dialogue, check out Penelope Skinner’s “Linda,” presented by Manhattan Theater Club. The title character is a 50 year old advertising executive who has it all—a trim figure, an award-winning career, a husband and two daughters. She comes up with the idea to market her company’s beauty products to women in her own age group.

This production, directed by Lonny Price, cuts down on the scenery but adds a 40-piece orchestra. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s music never sounded so good.

The revolution she preaches on behalf of these “invisible” women never catches fire and Linda’s professional and personal life become turbulent.

The supporting players are from the London production and they are fine, all managing to sound American. But what draws in the audiences, and evokes multiple standing ovations at every show, is the remarkable Glenn Close. She even outdoes Swanson.

Janie Dee is wonderful in the title role and the rest of the cast is also excellent, under the direction of Lynne Meadow.

David Mamet has written some classic plays (such as “American Buffalo” and “Glengarry Glen Ross”), but whenever he takes on the legal system, he stubs his toe. (One exception is his excellent film version of “The Winslow Boy” but that was written by Terence Rattigan.)

Glick portrays Jordan Berman, a gay man with three female buddies. As they approach their thirties, each of the women finds a husband. Jordan fancies a co-worker who shows no interest in him. At least, he can always confide in his widowed grandmother (played with immense charm by Barbara Barrie). She has no problem with his sexual orientation.

In his latest play, “The Penitant” (at the Atlantic Theater) the central character is a psychiatrist named Charles whose former patient killed ten people. A newspaper mistakenly quotes the doctor as writing that homosexuality is an “aberration,” when he had actually written the word “adaptation.” His lawyer informs him that the paper will issue a retraction on condition that Charles testify on

To see a star being born, catch Gordon Glick’s performance in Joshua Harmon’s “Significant Other.”

Glick handles the character’s wild mood swings with virtuosity, moving effortlessly from laughter to tears. He also has strong support from Lindsay Mendez, Rebecca Naomi Jones, and Sas Goldberg as his gal-pals. Glick and Harmon are talents to watch, as is director Trip Cullmann

BOOKS du JOUR APRIL 2017 By Frederic Colier General@bookcasetv.com

After the intensive and nerve-racking reentry months, showing no sign of abating, I thought that time to take a break would be appropriate. That is turning the TV and radio off, avoiding reading newspapers and magazines, and ignoring the nudges from Facebook and the likes. It is surprising how quickly we can remember that the sky is blue, and not contaminated by everything taking place in DC and the White House. Spring is breathing down our neck, and, despite the last lagging blast of winter, I feel confident we’ll get to brighter days before we know it. Here is a selection to reflect the change of mood.

(William Morrow, pp 375, $26.99)

(William Morrow, pp 400, $15.99)

(Tarcher Perigee, pp 264, $ 15.00)

(Alfred A. Knopf, pp 352, $ 27.95)

(Farrar Strauss Giroux, pp 488, $ 28.00)

Some novels are simply born to become films. “The Fortunate Ones,” the first novel by the talented Ellen Umansky pertains to this category. Upon opening the first pages of her captivating story, one can see the credits rolling on the page. The setting immerses us at once in a intimate spectacle. We are in Vienna, in 1936, with a scene where life seems normal. There is food on the table and a conversation about a painting. Yet, a palpable underlying anxiety impregnates the Zimmer family, who knows that dark forces are simmering. Cut to Los Angeles 2005. Another story thread begins. Lizzy Goldstein is watching the casket of her father being lowered down . . .

If there is a sure sign to guarantee the success of a book, perhaps the intensity of the stakes should be the measure. Some stakes are more interesting than others. Often simplicity is the name of the winner. In Amita Trasi’s moving first novel, “The Color of the Sky,” though story simplicity reigns, the emotional line will not let you catch up your breath. Not surprising that when first self-published in 2015, the book headed straight to the best-sellers. Though there is no way of knowing how much was edited out in this current version, one thing remains. The gem at the core of the story already existed. This is the sort of novel you have to read in one sitting to find out the outcome of the nightmarish dilemma that keeps you riveted.

This book makes a huge assumption from the onset. How can it not? If you are young, out of college, living on your own, most likely you are broke. If you live at home, you’re probably close to broke as well. How else could it be? Burdened by galloping college tuitions, the prospect of months if not years of unpaid internships, millennials are trapped in a maddening cycle of financial paralysis as they struggle to pay off their bulging debts. How to survive in this financial jungle that seems to aim at your wallet on every street corners? How to avoid the humiliation when you go out with your crew, abstaining from eating, when everyone knows you cannot afford anything? If you stay up all night, unable to sleep, chances are that you are a millennial churning those questions in your head.

This book is not about the ugly faces we currently are witnessing in the political arena (my comment is not misplaced), nor it is related to the Disney version of Hugo’s, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” where the gargoyles of the famous cathedral come to life. “The Gargoyle Hunters,” the first novel by John Freeman Gill, depicted here, are about the half-man half-beast creatures dangling from the New York architectural landscape and its buildings, a vanishing specie. They make like their French counterparts just as much noise, but the noise here carries the tone of silent suffering. There is a surprisingly great dose of nostalgia in this novel, in the way the gargoyles are used like an Ariadne Thread to capture the feelings of a departed family member or the memory of a distant relative. Artifacts against amnesia.

There are times when a certain type of books lands on your desk and you must recline to ponder how to review it. There are obvious reasons for this rumination. The topic at hand is so monumental that it requires a book-length commentary to deserve proper attention. Or perhaps the reviewer has explored that same topic at length and has drawn a set of conclusions that makes impartiality difficult to exercise. When this is the case, best panacea is to leave one’s beliefs in the closet and focus instead on the intention the book sought to provide. Thomas L. Friedman’s new book, “Thank You for Being Late” falls into such a door stomper. It is a loud book coming with a bang that should be a compulsory read. “Thank You” does not shy away from attempting to capture the fast raising temperature our culture and society are undergoing, and Friedman, despite casting a wide net, succeeds in locating the hot spots. His prose is his biggest asset. Writing in a direct style, which may frustrate some, he manages to convey with persuasion the seismic shifts taking place in our world for the laypersons. He is dealing with the three pivotal points when a society experiences such a radical paradigm shift that it is forever transformed. You may have already heard of these three underlined points: the technological revolution infiltrating every aspect of our lives, the inescapable globalization and climate change. What you may not know is the effects they are causing on our rituals: disrupted through endless acceleration. Just as the universe is expanding faster, our world is shifting gears faster than ever, demanding us an endless adaptability. Though you will not be bored reading this serious book, a measure of skepticism is required. Can the mindset that created our enormous problems be the best tool to fix them? That question is never tackled.

Do not be deceived however by this dark opening. The novel is not a rollercoaster through hell. Hell there is, but also warm reconciliation. Umansky has done a remarkable job to align her visual writing style to the theme of the novel. The thread between these split narratives hinges on a painting. A Chaim Soutine portrait, which first belonged to the Zimmers and ended up years later in the hands of the Goldsteins, before it was stolen from them. The vivid descriptions are as crisp as the relationship that develops between the two main characters. Rose who was sent away during the war in England is looking for the painting that meant so much to her mother. She meets Lizzy and finds solace and acceptance for the burden of the past. A situation not foreign to Soutine’s when in arrived in Paris penniless. Like countless artistic dissidents after WWI, he found a community of likeminded to support his creativity and give meaning to his art. A gift he left for future generations, just like this remarkable novel.

Starting in 1986 and spanning three decades, the story revolves first around, Mukta, a ten-year-old lower cast girl in India, who is destined to become a prostitute, like her mother and ancestors. But fate smiles at her, and Mukta is sent away to Mumbai to work for a wealthy family. There, she strikes an unlikely friendship with Tara, the daughter of the family. Seven years later however, Mukta is kidnapped from the family, and Tara must follow her father to Los Angeles. Tara has a new life, and yet, the thought of Mutka never leaves her in peace. Years go by, and Tara, now an adult, returns to India determined to find her old friend into the heart-wrenching world of human trafficking. Her search however leads her to unexpected discoveries about her own family, and the role Mukta played in it. An emotional journey that will leave you raw.

But there’s hope on the way. Erin Lowry has crafted an entertaining book for the financially clueless millennials, filled with real-life solutions. Entertaining because her style is cheeky and quite hilarious. She knows who she is talking to and how to reach her audience. She toys a lot with the relationship theme for example, a theme Millennials appear to be obsessed with, by bringing forth innovative terms. Getting “financially naked” with your partner implies getting honest about learning the “possibility of STDs” standing for here (sexually transmitted debt). Indeed making your bed with someone has never been so full of liabilities. It is not that Lowry has it all figured out for you, but she certainly can point you in the right direction to get out from under. “Broke Millennial” is a road map for the endlessly broke who are in serious need of a financial education. At the least, Lowry’s book is guaranteed to ease out the middle of the night panic attacks.

The main protagonist of the novel is the thirteen-year-old, Griffin, who yearns to have a relationship with his estranged father, Gill. Too eager to have an innocent recruit help him with his preservation operation, Gill sent Griffin around the city to salvage and steal gargoyles and sculptures from dilapidated buildings. The city plays an important character in the novel. Under the constant impulse of urban renewal, which is in itself the manifestation in the blind faith of prosperity having no regard for the past, its history and cultural heritage . . . (must you hear Trump’s voice here? I leave the judgment to you), the city impacts how the characters relate to their world, especially as the city transforms itself into a cold monster of glass and steel towers, devoid of all the flowery embellishments of beaux-art architecture. The novel is not simply a coming-of-age journey of an adolescent straddling two opposite worlds, but a warm meditation on the importance of being nurtured and feeling grounded. Don’t think for a second however it comes easy.

pril is a beautiful time of the year in New York City. A few years ago while strolling in the Easter Day parade, Lulu and I Met Stacy McClosky and her fur baby Sadie. They were all decked out in their Easter finest. Needless to say we have been friends ever since. Sadie has gone on to model in New York City fashion week and for various dog charities and rescue events. She is also honorary chair for Celebrity Catwalk. Sadie has been interviewed for TV. (ABC, NBC, CBS & FOX) She is a certified therapy dog and a medical alert service dog. In addition to all these wonderful accomplishments, Sadie travels with her mother as a global sales executive in technology as well as around the world on vacation. How many dogs have been to 33 of the 50 states, and to Paris, Bermuda, Puerto Rico and Anguilla . Sadie is Stacy’s world, her heart soul and best friend. For it was Sadie and her great personality that induced Stacy into the world of Doggy fashion, doggie charities and the gala lifestyle of New York City. Sadie loves the beach and enjoys swimming. Pups have special needs. She has congestive heart failure (CHF) and is on multiple Medications, morning noon and night. Sadie has exceeded her expectations and is under the care of the Animal Medical Center. Her diet is closely moderated and she is fed dehydrated meat. And when she is very good, she gets a special doggy treat. Sadie is doing fantastic and we hope that Sadie and Stacy have many more Easter Sundays together. In June Sadie will be a bridesmaid in a wedding, something she has been in the past. And we will all be there, April 16th at 11AM . See you all on Easter Sunday in front of St Patrick’s Cathedral for our yearly stroll.
