PAT MONAHAN AND TRAIN

A Journey Through Music, Wine, Philanthropy, and Legacy

Carece Slaughter

From Grammy-winning hits to winemaking and philanthropy, Train's frontman reflects on the band’s legacy and future while staying true to his creative roots.

Pat Monahan, the unmistakable voice of Train, has been a driving force in the music industry since the band’s formation in 1994. With a career spanning multiple generations, Train’s chart-topping hits like “Drops of Jupiter” and “Hey, Soul Sister” have left an indelible mark on the global music landscape. As the band wraps up the Summer Road Trip 2024 Tour alongside REO Speedwagon and celebrates the 15th anniversary of Save Me, San Francisco, Monahan reflects on the band’s evolution, his creative ventures in winemaking, and his philanthropic efforts supporting Family House. In this exclusive interview, he shares insights into the music that has defined decades, his passion for storytelling through wine, and what lies ahead for Train.

TRAIN AND REO SPEEDWAGON UNITE: A SUMMER TOUR BRIDGING GENERATIONS

Carece Slaughter: Train and REO Speedwagon just wrapped up the Summer Road Trip 2024 Tour. This is a fantastic pairing that bridges generations. Can you tell us a bit about what excites you most about performing alongside REO Speedwagon, and how the tour caters to such a diverse audience?

Pat Monahan: When Kevin Cronin and I met a few years ago through Sammy Hagar, not that I'm a “name dropper,” but I might as well do it. Kevin and I hit it off really well. Due to COVID, we were unable to work together for a while. When things opened up, we thought it would be a cool idea for our bands to go on tour together. It's been an incredible experience watching these amazing musicians perform every night and playing the songs I grew up with. They are not only talented but also wonderful people, and it's an honor to be on tour with them. I hope we can do something like this again in the future. It's not often that you tour with bands and walk away as friends for life, but in this case, we definitely have. I believe the audience is getting a fantastic show every night, and we're doing a great job. REO is also doing a fantastic job, and we get to see Yacht Rock Revue, one of my favorite bands. It's been a real success so far, and we have many more shows to get people excited and make some memories.

"LONG YELLOW DRESS" AND "AM GOLD" NOSTALGIA

CS: Train's recent single "Long Yellow Dress" has a strong San Francisco vibe, while your 2022 album "AM Gold" paid homage to classic rock sounds. Is there a conscious effort to recapture some of that earlier Train sound, or is this a natural evolution for the band?

PM: I think when AM Gold was being written, we definitely wanted to step back into like the 1980s because there was so much diversity on the radio between R&B and Disco and Rock and Singer-Songwriter music, and I think that was the goal in capturing all that, and then Long Yellow Dress is kind of an extension of that. I'm writing an Americana record. This was one of the first songs that got written for it. This may not even be on the record since people will have heard it for a while, but it's such a good vibe, and people are loving the song live. So, I think it worked out pretty well.

"SAVE ME, SAN FRANCISCO" ALBUM AT 15: A DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY

CS: Train's iconic "Save Me, San Francisco" album with the global hit "Hey, Soul Sister" celebrates its 15th anniversary this year. Looking back, can you share a story about the album's creation or how it impacted the band's trajectory?

PM: I just remember writing 80 songs for "Save Me, San Francisco". It had been after a failed attempt at a solo album, being very frustrated with some of the choices that we had made in the band train, and wanted to get back to our roots. And so 80 songs still didn't complete the album. There may have been five or six that made it, and then we had to continue to write. One standout memory is of our recording sessions in London, which was a fantastic experience. We had the pleasure of working with my friends Butch Walker, Greg Wattenberg, Sam Hollander, and many others to find the right sound. Another magical moment was working with Espionage, the Norwegian duo who helped me write "Hey, Soul Sister" and several other songs. Collaborating with Espen Lind and Amund Bjørklund, was a real pleasure. Maybe we’ll do that again.

FROM SONGWRITING TO WINEMAKING

You've found success not just in music, but also with your award-winning Save Me, San Francisco Wine Co. How do your creative impulses translate between songwriting and crafting a successful wine? Do you find inspiration in similar places?

PM: My love for wine is relatively new, about ten years old. I began making wine with a partner before I even started drinking or caring about it. Now that I know a lot about wine, I

take pride in being part of presenting our wine to people, even though I'm not the winemaker. It's important for us to showcase the taste of the Bay Area, where our band is from. We've been fortunate to have sold a lot of wine, which has allowed us to support a charity in San Francisco called Family House. This charity provides housing for sick children and their families who can't afford to stay in a hotel while in San Francisco. Family House has 80 rooms for families and is always at full capacity. I'm proud that our winemaking has not only produced quality wine but also provided support for a charity we love and believe in.

BEYOND THE STAGE: FROM HALLMARK MOVIES TO FAMILY HOUSE

You've ventured into acting and television with projects like the "Christmas in Tahoe" movie. How do these additional creative outlets complement your work as a musician, and can you tell us about your involvement with Family House, the charity supported by your wine business?

PM: Well, you know, all these different things, acting and making albums, and right now we're on a TikTok trend, they are all really fun. So we're always trying to stay current, but also, you know, dip into the arts. I think acting is incredibly difficult. I would not say I'm great at it, but I do put everything I have into it, and would love to do more of that. Our work with Family House is not really an artistic venture, but it is a creative one. And to have those people and all the love they put into what they do at Family House. It's just inspiring. So it inspires us to make music, make TikToks and get in a movie here and there.

LEGACY AND LOOKING FORWARD

With a catalog of hits like "Drops of Jupiter" and "Hey, Soul Sister," Train has left an indelible mark on the music industry. How do you approach creating new music that both honors the band’s legacy and stays relevant in today’s ever-evolving music scene?

PM: I believe the next step for Train is to focus on staying relevant. Staying relevant is always the goal, and the way to achieve that is by being competitive. We have some country esque elements in our music, but I think fully embracing the country music genre has previously been considered taboo. Country music itself is a family, and if you try to barge in after making a bunch of pop songs, it might seem insincere to suddenly transition to country music. However, I think it's time for us to step a little closer to that territory, and I believe we will be welcomed with open arms. It may not be a complete transformation into a country version of Train, but more of an Americana version, drawing inspiration from artists like Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. Our Summer tour with REO Speedwagon will be a great experience, and it's happening just before we make this shift. We're looking forward to ending this tour with REO

Speedwagon as close friends and hopefully collaborating with them in the future. It's going to be a lot of fun, and we might even have Kevin, Dave, or other band members join us for some of our future projects. This is an exciting move into the future for us.

SAN FRANCISCO FAVORITES

As a San Francisco native, what are a few of your all-time favorite hidden gems in the city – a favorite restaurant, a must-see viewpoint, or a local musician you admire?

PM: San Francisco is absolutely where I could eat Mexican food every single day. And when you're in a Bay Area anywhere around San Francisco, I find it to be the best Mexican food in the world. And I've had it everywhere, Mexico, San Diego, everywhere that you can guarantee you'll have great Mexican food. But if you see a taqueria or anything in San Francisco, you must go in. And if you get a burrito, get a chicken burrito with a chili rieno in it, you will not have to eat for another three to four weeks. The incredible music that comes out of San Francisco is also really special. You know, Green Day is still out there doing it. I'm so glad that our manager, Crush Music, is also from the Bay Area. And, you know, it's a beautiful place to come out of and to call home.

As our conversation with Pat Monahan draws to a close, we extend our heartfelt thanks for sharing his journey and insights with us. We’re excited to see Train in their upcoming shows and eagerly await the release of their highly anticipated live album and upcoming projects. With Pat’s boundless creativity and passion, we know there’s much more to look forward to from this multi-talented artist.

TIFFANY SMITH

on Career, Voice Acting, and Indie Film Success

From Masters of the Universe to Indie Film Stardom, Tiffany Smith Shares Exclusive Insights into Her Multi-Faceted Career and Personal Passions

Tiffany Smith is the kind of woman whose energy and passion can make even the most jaded Hollywood veteran sit up and take notice. Whether she’s lending her voice to powerful animated characters, commanding attention on screen, or diving into indie projects, Tiffany exudes a dynamic force that mirrors her career’s diversity. Known for her versatility, she is as comfortable leading productions as she is advocating for causes close to her heart.

In an exclusive conversation, Tiffany shared insights on her multi-faceted career, upcoming projects, and how she balances personal passions with professional demands. With projects ranging from voice acting in Masters of the Universe to the indie thriller In Flight, her career continues to evolve, capturing the attention of discerning audiences and critics alike.

Early Beginnings: A Passion for Performance

From a young age, Tiffany Smith knew she wanted to be an entertainer. “I always knew I wanted to be a performer,” she recalls, with the kind of clarity that suggests her path was always set in the stars. Growing up, she was surrounded by inspiration. Her sister dabbled in commercial work, and Tiffany quickly became fascinated with the entertainment industry. But despite her enthusiasm, her parents encouraged her to delay her pursuit of a career until she was older. As Tiffany explains, “I remember many nights asking, ‘When can I start auditioning? When can I get an agent?’”

Her path took a detour when her family moved from California to the East Coast during her formative years. Still, her dreams of stardom didn’t wane. Tiffany recalls attending modeling school, taking voice lessons, and imagining a career in music. “I thought my career was going to lead into music and being a pop singer,” she shares. But as the industry presented its unique demands—such as a request to lie about her age—Tiffany made a bold choice to pivot.

It was during her time at Syracuse University, where she studied broadcast journalism and minored in the music industry, that Tiffany’s trajectory took its next significant turn. Armed with skills that would later help her navigate the complexities of entertainment contracts, she was ready for what came next.

Finding Her Voice: The Evolution of a Career Though music was her first love, Tiffany found a new passion in hosting and acting, particularly in the geek and comic book spaces. “I grew up really into comic books and video games,” she enthuses, reminiscing about her early days. Her deep love for the genre led her to Los Angeles, where she eventually landed a role at G4, a network dedicated to comic book and geek culture. It was there that Tiffany’s career in hosting began to flourish.

“I really think that so much of this industry is about showing that you can do what you’re trying to do,” she says, reflecting on her time at G4 and her eventual collaborations with Marvel and DC. From live streams to hosting YouTube shows, Tiffany’s authenticity as a fan opened the door to numerous opportunities. But it wasn’t just her ability to connect with audiences that fueled her rise. Tiffany also understood the importance of relationships in Hollywood. “It’s not just about who you know; it’s about people knowing what you do,” she explains. And people certainly took notice. Op-

I believe in small, impactful changes. Something as simple as gifting a glass straw can encourage ecoconsciousness.

portunities continued to roll in, including roles in blockbuster franchises and indie projects.

Masters of the Universe and Beyond: Voice Acting and Creative Freedom

One of Tiffany’s most exciting recent projects is her role as Andra in Masters of the Universe: Revolution, where she reprises her role in the third season of the iconic animated series. “I grew up watching He-Man,” she recalls with a smile, “so being part of that world feels like something I manifested as a kid.”

Voice acting, while often seen as an invisible art, offers Tiffany the freedom to bring characters to life in a way that live-action can’t always provide. “There’s such a freedom in voice acting because it’s all about the sound coming out of your mouth,” she explains. Whether she’s working on a blockbuster like Masters of the Universe or indie projects like Curious Matter Anthology, Tiffany’s approach to voice acting is deeply committed. “You have to let go of how you look and really focus on the performance,” she adds.

I’ve learned that saying things out loud—verbalizing your goals— can lead to amazing opportunities. People want to help you when they know what you’re working toward.

Her work as a co-producer and voice director on Curious Matter Anthology is another feather in her cap, offering her creative control over the storytelling process. “I didn’t know I wanted to direct until I did it,” Tiffany admits. And, as it turns out, she’s quite good at it. The show’s success is proof that her behind-the-scenes talents are just as strong as her on-camera abilities.

The Indie Film Circuit: A New Kind of Thrill

In a career as varied as Tiffany’s, it’s no surprise that she’s ventured into indie film territory. Her latest project, In Flight, was picked up by Gravitas Ventures and made its way to the Cannes Film Festival. The psychological thriller gave Tiffany the chance to explore a different kind of creative expression. “Indie films are so exciting because everyone is there for the love of the project,” she explains. “There’s this sense of urgency and collaboration that you don’t always get on bigger sets.”

Tiffany also speaks to the unique challenges of working on indie films, where actors often have more freedom but also more responsibility. “Indie films allow for more feedback and quick shifts on set,” she shares, “but it’s also a learning experience, especially when you’re working with actors who have such different styles.”

Her passion for indie filmmaking is palpable, and it’s clear that the experience of working on In Flight has left a lasting impression. “Seeing my name attached to a feature at the Cannes Film Festival was a dream come true,” she says, beaming.

Advocacy and Personal Passions

In addition to her incredibly full life of acting and hosting, Tiffany is deeply committed to environmental and ocean conservation. A passionate advocate, she has curated partnerships with organizations like Earth’s Oceans and Lonely Whale, both of which work tirelessly to protect marine ecosystems. “I believe in small changes that can make a big impact,” she explains. Whether it’s gifting glass straws to encourage eco-consciousness or driving an electric car, Tiffany leads by example in her day-to-day life. Her commitment to sustainability is further reflected in her involvement with organizations like Operation Smile, UNICEF, and Operation Gratitude, causes that allow her to give back on a broader scale.

Her role on the MPTF Next Gen Board is also deeply personal. “What’s going to happen when I’m an older actor?” she recalls asking herself during the pandemic. Tiffany’s work with the Motion Picture Television Fund allows her to give back to retired industry professionals, ensuring they’re supported in their later years.

“We even played mafia on Zoom with the residents during the pandemic,” she says with a smile, highlighting her passion for connecting across generations within the industry.

Outside of her advocacy work, Tiffany leads an adventurous and active lifestyle. From perfecting her aim at the firing range and earning her motorcycle license to sweating it out in hot yoga, she thrives on exploring new passions. Scuba diving and attending local vintage car

Voice acting offers such freedom because you’re not thinking about how you look—you’re focused solely on the performance.

shows are among her favorite pastimes, each offering a sense of balance and fulfillment. “Finding things that take you out of the industry and feed your soul is so important,” she shares. Whether she's scuba diving or working on stunt skills, Tiffany’s off-screen life is as dynamic and varied as her professional career.

Looking Ahead:

What’s Next for Tiffany Smith?

With so many exciting projects in the pipeline, Tiffany’s future in Hollywood is bright. From moderating panels at San Diego Comic-Con to expanding her work as a voice actor and producer, she’s poised to continue making waves in the industry.

For now, fans can catch her in Masters of the Universe: Revolution, while eagerly awaiting the release of In Flight and new episodes of Curious Matter Anthology. And while she’s keeping a few projects under wraps for now, one thing is certain: Tiffany Smith is a force to be reckoned with.

Tiffany’s journey is a testament to resilience, creativity, and the power of staying true to oneself. Whether she’s lending her voice to iconic characters or championing important causes, she continues to inspire, entertain, and uplift. Stay tuned—there’s much more to come from this multi-talented star.

ROHAN MARLEY A Heartfelt Journey Through Film and Legacy

At the recent screening of Bob Marley: One Love hosted by the American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ) in New York, Rohan Marley, son of the legendary Bob Marley, took the stage for a rare and intimate discussion about the film, his father’s legacy, and his own emotional journey. Rohan reflected on his personal journey to create this film and the enduring influence of his father's legacy.

Q: What was it like for you watching this film about your father?

Rohan Marley: Watching the film was an intensely emotional experience for me. I first saw it in Paris, where they handed me two glasses of champagne before the screening began. I think they knew it would be a heavy watch for me, and they were right. Right from the opening scenes, I felt a rush of emotions—memories, feelings, and thoughts all flooding in at once. It's hard to describe, but there’s something incredibly surreal about watching your father’s life unfold on the big screen, especially when he’s been gone for so long.

At first, it was the early parts of the movie that really got to me—seeing those moments of his life that I only vaguely remember or have heard about from others. But now, after seeing the

film multiple times, it’s the latter part that really moves me. It’s like, with each viewing, I connect more deeply with different aspects of his story. One minute, I’m reliving childhood memories; the next, I’m overwhelmed with a profound sense of admiration for the man he was. It’s a strange mix of pride, sadness, and a deep longing to have had more time with him

Q: Can you elaborate on the specific emotions you experienced during the film?

Rohan Marley: The emotions are layered and complex. Initially, it was all about nostalgia— remembering those fleeting moments from my childhood and realizing how much time has passed since he was physically here. I was only nine years old when he passed, and while that’s a formative age, it’s also a time when many memories start to blur. So, seeing his life por-

trayed so vividly brought back flashes of those early years—his presence, his voice, the way he moved, and interacted with us as kids.

As the film progresses, though, it taps into something deeper. There’s a moment when you start to see him not just as your father, but as this extraordinary individual who impacted millions of lives. It’s like I’m seeing him through a new lens—one that amplifies his humanity and his greatness. It’s humbling and heartbreaking at the same time. You start to think about all the things he accomplished and the incredible legacy he left behind, and it hits you that he did all of that in such a short span of time. That realization makes me incredibly emotional, especially when I think about the long years without him and how different life might have been if he were still here.

Photos by: Ray Yau/ @rayyau

Q: How has your father's legacy shaped who you are today?

Rohan Marley: My father’s legacy is something that permeates every aspect of my life. It’s not just about the music, although that’s a huge part of it; it’s about the values he stood for— love, unity, and social justice. Growing up, I always felt this responsibility to honor those values in my own life, to carry forward the message he so passionately believed in.

His legacy has influenced my decisions, my work, and how I relate to the world around me. For instance, I’m deeply involved in initiatives that promote sustainable living and environmental stewardship, which are causes he cared about. But beyond that, his legacy has shaped my worldview—the belief that we are all connected and that love and compassion are the most powerful forces for change. It’s a guiding principle for me, and it’s something I strive to instill in my children as well

Q: The AFJ has played a significant role in bringing this film to audiences. What does that partnership mean to you?

Rohan Marley: The partnership with the AFJ is incredibly meaningful, both personally and in the broader context of my father’s legacy.

The AFJ’s mission to improve lives in Jamaica through education, healthcare, and social development aligns perfectly with the principles my father lived by. It’s not just about making a film—it’s about using his story as a catalyst for real, positive change.

When I heard that the AFJ would be using the film to support projects like the Trench Town Primary School, it felt like everything had come full circle. My father always believed in giving back, particularly to the communities that shaped him. The fact that this film can now play a role in improving education and infrastructure in Jamaica is something I think he would be incredibly proud of. It’s a way of

ensuring that his legacy continues to benefit the people of Jamaica, just as he always intended.

Q: How do you hope the film will influence viewers, particularly younger generations?

Rohan Marley: I hope that viewers, especially younger generations, walk away with a deeper understanding of who my father was—not just as a musician, but as a man who stood for something much greater. His music carries powerful messages of love, resilience, and social justice, and I believe those messages are just as relevant today as they were back then.

For younger audiences, I hope the film serves as both an introduction to his life and a call to action. My father was someone who didn’t just talk about change; he actively pursued it, even when it was difficult or dangerous. I want people to see that and be inspired to live with the same kind of purpose and conviction. The world today faces many challenges, and I be-

lieve the principles my father lived by—love, unity, and justice—are exactly what we need to navigate these times. If this film can inspire even a fraction of that, then it has done its job

Q: In what ways does this film add to or differ from previous portrayals of your father?

Rohan Marley: This film offers a more personal and intimate portrayal of my father. Previous documentaries and biopics have done an incredible job of capturing his music and public persona, but Bob Marley: One Love goes deeper into his private life, his struggles, and the man behind the legend. It’s raw and emotional in a way that feels very authentic to who he was.

What sets this film apart is its ability to show the duality of his life—his public mission of spreading love and unity, and his private battles, both with his health and with the pres-

sures that came with his role as a global icon. It doesn’t shy away from showing his vulnerabilities, and I think that’s important because it makes him more relatable, more human. For those of us who knew him, this film feels like a true reflection of the man we remember—complex, passionate, and deeply caring.

Q: What’s next for you in terms of carrying forward your father’s legacy?

Rohan Marley: Moving forward, I’m committed to continuing my father’s work in whatever ways I can. This includes projects that promote social justice, environmental sustainability, and education—areas that he was deeply passionate about. I’m also focused on raising my children with the same values that he instilled in me, ensuring that they understand the importance of love, unity, and standing up for what’s right.

Additionally, I’m involved in various initiatives that aim to keep his music and message alive for future generations. The world is constantly changing, but the core values my father lived by remain as relevant as ever. I believe it’s our responsibility—both as his family and as global citizens—to keep that spirit alive and to continue working towards the kind of world he envisioned. That’s what I’m committed to, and that’s what I hope to achieve in the years to come.

Through Rohan Marley's heartfelt words, we gain a deeper understanding of the man behind the legend, the enduring impact of his life's work, and the personal journey of a son who carries forward his father's mission with pride, passion, and purpose. This film, and the conversations it inspires, are a testament to the timelessness of Bob Marley’s message and the ongoing relevance of his vision for a better, more unified world.

APERTURE CELLARS AND JESSE KATZ

Exploring Art and Winemaking

Jesse Katz, a first-generation winemaker and the visionary behind Aperture Cellars, has transformed the California wine scene with his passion for terroir, art, and innovation. With a rich background that blends his global vineyard experience and his family's love for art, Jesse has positioned Aperture Cellars as a destination for both wine lovers and art enthusiasts. Known for crafting Bordeaux-inspired wines with Sonoma County's cool-climate essence, Jesse’s wines have received international acclaim, earning perfect scores and forging groundbreaking collaborations. Aperture Cellars uniquely combines winemaking and artistic expression, offering an immersive experience where both worlds meet.

Jesse’s journey into winemaking started long before he founded Aperture Cellars in 2009. Growing up in Colorado and traveling to iconic vineyards worldwide with his father, renowned photographer Andy Katz, Jesse developed a deep appreciation for the creativity and precision winemaking demands. These early experiences inspired him to pursue winemaking as both an art and a science, leading to his formal education at Fresno State’s Department of Viticulture and Enology and work at legendary wineries like Pétrus in Bordeaux and Screaming Eagle in Napa Valley.

Jesse's passion for Bordeaux varietals, especially Cabernet Sauvignon, has become the cornerstone of Aperture Cellars. His commitment to crafting world-class wines from Sonoma County’s unique terroir has garnered attention worldwide. Aperture’s cool-climate vineyards, covering more than 200 acres, produce wines characterized by complexity, balance, and freshness. Aperture Cellars is the only winery in the Alexander Valley to produce a Cabernet Sauvignon that has received a perfect 100-point score, a testament to Jesse's meticulous vineyard management and winemaking.

Aperture Cellars offers various tasting experiences that highlight the diversity of its portfolio. The Soil Series Experience introduces guests to Bordeaux-style blends from vineyards with distinct soil compositions, while the Site Series Experience focuses on the terroir expression in single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons. For an even more exclusive experience, the Private Lounge offers an elevated journey through Aperture’s most sought-after wines.

Can you elaborate on the wine programs you’ve designed?

Guests can enjoy exceptional Bordeaux-style wines from cool-climate vineyards in Sonoma’s top regions while taking in the stunning views of our estate vineyards. With a glass in hand, they can appreciate the natural beauty of the northern Russian River Valley through floor-toceiling windows overlooking our 40-acre estate.

The indoor experience is equally captivating, featuring an art collection by my father, acclaimed photographer Andy Katz, displayed in our gallery-inspired tasting space. A visit to Aperture isn’t just about the wine; it’s about the entire property and the surprises it offers.

Each of our three tasting experiences offers an intimate, seated journey through our exceptional Bordeaux-style wines at our modern, state-of-the-art winery, surrounded by centuryold vines first planted in 1912.

All tastings are available by reservation Thursday-Monday via Tock or by contacting us directly. We ask that all guests are 21+ and note that pets, except licensed service animals, are not allowed on the property.

The Soil Series Experience ($50 per person) is a fantastic introduction to the Aperture portfolio, offering a tour through Bordeaux-inspired blends from vineyards across Sonoma County, each with a unique soil profile.

The Site Series Experience ($75 per person) provides a deeper dive into Aperture’s curated vineyards, focusing on cool-climate vineyards in Alexander Valley and featuring single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons.

The Private Lounge Experience ($125 per person) is our most exclusive offering, where guests can enjoy a guided tasting of Aperture’s most sought-after wines in a private setting, paired with curated food accompaniments and stunning views of our estate vineyard.

What trends are you seeing in consumer tastes for California wines?

I think the quality and precision in California wines are at an all-time high, thanks to the incredible talent, technology, and better understanding of our unique terroir. Consumers are looking for wines with more freshness and balance at the highest level, which aligns with Aperture’s mission. We’ve always focused

on cooler sites in Sonoma for Bordeaux varietals, which naturally give us cooler nights and a more moderate growing season. These sites produce wines with rich, complex fruit but with more restraint and balance. We’re also planting Cabernet Sauvignon in even cooler areas, like the Russian River AVA, traditionally known for Pinot and Chardonnay, to look toward the future of winemaking.

What do you love about living in Sonoma?

As a Sonoma native, I love the natural beauty of this place. I enjoy biking through the hills or along the Sonoma coast, and I’ve gotten hooked on golfing. One of the best courses, Mayacama, is right here in Sonoma, and it has an amazing wine program for post-game enjoyment.

With Aperture Cellars, Jesse has created more than just a winery—it's a legacy that intertwines art and wine, offering a unique and profound experience that continues to captivate wine enthusiasts and collectors alike. As Aperture grows its presence both in the U.S. and internationally, Jesse is excited to see how his creative vision continues to inspire the world of modern winemaking.

LADERA RESORT, ST. LUCIA

Unwind in the Luxurious Embrace of St. Lucia's Ladera Resort

Certain experiences transcend the ordinary, etching themselves indelibly into one's memory. As I stepped into the Ladera Resort, a wave of warmth and tranquility washed over me, setting the tone for an unforgettable escape. Ladera Resort, St. Lucia is unlike any other I’ve visited.

As I took my first breath of the fresh Caribbean air, I was instantly captivated by the breathtaking views of the Pitons, a UNESCO World Heritage site on the southwestern coast of St. Lucia. The lush tropical gardens, bursting with vibrant colors, and the soothing sounds of nature created a serene oasis that immediately put me at ease.

Luxurious Accommodations

Ladera’s design frames nature’s masterpiece, and every moment felt like I was in perfect harmony with nature. The Resort’s luxurious suites blend seamlessly with the island’s natural beauty. The innovative open-wall concept, where the fourth wall is deliberately absent, allows for unobstructed panoramic views of the emerald Pitons and the shimmering Caribbean Sea.

Each suite is a private sanctuary, meticulously positioned to ensure utmost privacy while maximizing the stunning vistas. The absence of televisions throughout the Resort is a deliberate choice, inviting guests to disconnect from modern life and immerse themselves fully in the present moment. This thoughtful touch sets the stage for a truly transformative experience, whether you're seeking a romantic interlude or a solitary retreat to rejuvenate the spirit.

An Ideal Location

Perched on a ridge along St. Lucia’s southwestern coast, Ladera is nestled between the majestic Pitons. This prime location offered an incredible base for exploring the island. Nearby attractions like the Sulphur Springs, Diamond Falls and the charming town of Soufrière lie within a stone's throw away, ensuring no shortage of adventure.

While I was tempted to venture out and hike the trails of the Pitons, I often found myself lounging by my private plunge pool, mesmerized by the spectacular views. The serenity of my surroundings made it hard to leave my little slice of paradise.

From the moment I arrived, the staff at Ladera made me feel like a cherished guest. The staff’s genuine warmth and intuitive understanding elevated every interaction into a memorable experience.

Dining at Ladera was a culinary journey that I eagerly anticipated each day. The Resort’s signature restaurant, Dasheene, offers a menu that beautifully marries local flavors with international cuisine. Every innovative dish marries these flavors with crafted techniques, resulting in dishes that are nothing short of artful.

One evening, I savored the catch of the day paired with a refreshing mango salsa, while another night brought an indulgent chocolate dessert that was simply divine. Dining under the stars with the sounds of the Caribbean in the background created a magical ambiance.

The extensive wine list featured curated selections from around the world, perfectly complementing the menu’s diverse flavors. For those seeking intimacy, the Resort also offers private dining experiences, allowing guests to enjoy a romantic meal on their terrace or beneath a starlit sky.

Final Thoughts

Ladera Resort stands out as a true gem that combines natural beauty, where the natural splendor of St. Lucia becomes an integral part of the guest experience. It offers open-air accommodations and exceptional service. Whether you’re seeking adventure or relaxation, this Resort promises an experience that will rejuvenate and inspire.

Reflecting on my stay, I sincerely appreciate the time spent in this idyllic paradise. It’s an experience that lingers in my mind long after I left. I can hardly wait to return and soak in the magic of Ladera once more, knowing that it has captured a piece of my heart.

The Grand Reopening of the RUSTY PARROT in Jackson, Wyoming

Rediscovering the Charm and Elegance of the Newly Renovated Rusty Parrot Lodge

After a five-year hiatus, the iconic Rusty Parrot Lodge and Spa in Jackson, Wyoming, has triumphantly reopened its doors, offering guests an unparalleled mountain retreat experience. Last weekend, I was privileged to be among the first to experience this beloved destination’s rebirth, and I’m thrilled to share my unforgettable three-day adventure.

A Phoenix from the Ashes

The Rusty Parrot’s story is one of resilience typified in the history of the American West. A devastating fire nearly destroyed this familyowned gem, but after extensive renovations, it has reemerged more stunning than ever. While reimagined, the hotel maintains its cherished Jackson lodge aesthetic, seamlessly blending with the majestic surroundings.

Luxury Redefined

Upon arrival, the friendly staff extended a warm Wyoming welcome, setting the stage for an unforgettable adventure. The owner has a remarkable collection of paintings displayed, and the thoughtful layout, with the freedom to walk around and explore, enhances the hotel’s charm.

Redefined with 38 rooms and two suites, the Rusty Parrot offers an intimate escape. My room was a haven of comfort, featuring local art, luxury finishes and a private balcony with breathtaking mountain views. The hotel's thoughtful touches, like freshly baked cookies on the second floor (a heartwarming tradition), create a warm, homey atmosphere that sets it

apart from typical luxury accommodations. A large outdoor hot tub, a secluded courtyard and a rooftop space are perfect for overlooking the creek and butte, enhancing the experience and creating a remarkable mountain getaway.

Culinary Excellence Returns

One of the hotel's highlights is its exceptional dining options. The on-site award-winning Wild Sage Restaurant offers a small but thoughtfully curated menu. I savored a multicourse dinner on their outdoor terrace, where each dish was a masterpiece. The focaccia bread and NY Strip steak were standouts, complemented by expertly crafted cocktails and an atmosphere that encourages laughter and relaxation.

Adventure Awaits

The Rusty Parrot's location is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. I embarked on a scenic bike ride around town, followed by an invigorating hike, rewarded with panoramic views of Jackson. The hotel's proximity to town allowed for leisurely exploration, including witnessing a thrilling street shootout performance and enjoying local watering holes.

Relaxation Reborn

The legendary Body Sage Spa has been lovingly restored, much to the delight of longtime patrons. My personalized spa experience was pure bliss, complete with an energy-matching scent selection and a professional massage.

Beyond the Hotel

The Rusty Parrot excels at curating unforgettable experiences. From horseback riding at Turpin Meadow Ranch through stunning countryside to heart-pounding white water rafting down the Snake River guided by Jackson Hole Whitewater, every moment of my stay was filled with adventure and wonder.

A Testament to Renewal

The grand reopening of the Rusty Parrot Lodge and Spa is more than just the return of a beloved hotel – it's a celebration of resilience, craftsmanship, and the enduring allure of Jackson. Whether you're seeking relaxation, adventure or a taste of Wyoming's unique culture, the Rusty Parrot offers it all in luxurious style.

As I reluctantly checked out, I knew one thing for certain: the Rusty Parrot isn't just back –it's better than ever. Its combination of on-site amenities and curated off-site experiences lets guests fully immerse themselves in the local culture while enjoying luxury. Don't miss the chance to be part of its incredible new chapter in Jackson Hole's hospitality scene.

Spring/Summer 2025

Dennis Basso took the runway at New York Fashion Week with a collection that celebrated timeless style and the beauty of women across generations. Held at the prestigious 583 Park Avenue, Basso’s Spring/Summer 2025 show highlighted the theme of "generational dressing," reflecting his decades-long career dressing grandmothers, mothers, and daughters. His vision for this collection was rooted in the shared experience of women enjoying life’s special moments at America’s grand resorts and Mediterranean seaside getaways.

In collaboration with QVC, a brand with which Basso has been associated for over 31 years, the designer also spotlighted the “Age of Possibility,” a celebration of women over 50. QVC’s platform, created to honor women 50+ with curated products and empowering content, aligned seamlessly with Basso’s vision of ageless fashion. Several QVC looks graced the runway, showcasing pieces from the Dennis by Dennis Basso collection, which will be available on QVC for Spring/Summer 2025

The collection was a celebration of light fabrics and luxurious materials, with designs that encapsulated both the vibrancy of spring and the elegance of evening wear. Basso’s creations included a range of pieces from man-tailored jackets paired with wide-leg trousers and fitted pantsuits to flowing chiffon cocktail dresses and elegant gowns. Fabrics like chiffon, silk jacquard, embroidered lace, and printed silk gazar were paired with faux fur cropped jackets and petal-ruffle boleros, adding a playful yet sophisticated touch to the ensembles. The color palette of pale mint, sky blue, coral, and cream

was elevated with touches of gold, silver, and sequins for evening wear.

A key moment of the show was when iconic actress Susan Lucci closed the runway in a custom couture gown designed by Basso. This appearance symbolized not only her embrace of the "Age of Possibility" but also the timeless elegance that Basso has always championed. Special guests from QVC’s "Q50" program, a group of influential women over 50 from diverse industries, were present to celebrate this milestone.

Reflecting on the inspiration behind his collection, Basso shared, “Over the years, I’ve dressed the grandmothers, the mothers, and the daughters, and I wanted this collection to be a celebration of generational dressing.” He emphasized the joy of seeing women across generations enjoy the beauty of fashion in the grand settings of American and Mediterranean resorts.

Dennis Basso’s Spring/Summer 2025 show was not just a fashion statement—it was a tribute to ageless beauty, freedom, and the power of women at every stage of life.

MEDITERRANEAN DREAMS

Badgley Mischka’s Glamorous Voyage for Spring/Summer 2025

For over three decades, Mark Badgley and James Mischka have been synonymous with elegance, glamour, and timeless sophistication. As they prepare to present their Spring/ Summer 2025 collection at New York Fashion Week, they invite us on a journey to the Mediterranean aboard Aristotle and Jackie Onassis' yacht, Christina O. This collection embodies the languid luxury of summer days in Marbella, Malta, and Mykonos, evoking starlit evenings and carefree elegance. Known for their ability to blend a wink to the past with a modern edge, Badgley Mischka continues to captivate the fashion world, making women feel beautiful and empowered around the globe.

During NYFW, Resident Magazine caught up with the design duo who shared insights into their creative process and inspiration for this season's collection:

How has your design philosophy evolved since you first launched Badgley Mischka in 1988?

Mark Badgley: "We started Badgley Mischka to make clothes to wear for having fun – we wanted our customers to have a wonderful time in our clothes. Although times have changed a lot since that early idea, we still feel the same way."

What is the inspiration behind your upcoming NYFW SS25 collection?

Mark Badgley: "Spring 2025 Badgley Mischka is a dream of a summer on Aristotle and Jackie Onassis’ yacht, the Christina O. It’s a season of languid days and starlit evenings between Marbella, Malta, and Mykonos."

Do you have a fashion muse?

James Mischka: "Our first muse was Mark’s twin sister O’Hara. She was a gorgeous, glamorous actress in New York City and was (still is!) our ideal customer."

What do you consider to be the hallmark of a Badgley Mischka design?

James Mischka: "We try to walk a fine line between clothes that have a wink to the past and yet feel totally modern – vaguely retro but 100% today."

How has your brand adapted to the changing fashion industry over the years, especially with the rise of digital fashion shows and online shopping?

Mark Badgley: "Badgley Mischka has never been afraid to change and explore new ways to reach our customers and to find those that haven’t discovered us yet. The innovations in digital marketing are happening faster every day, and we have a great team to keep us on top of it."

What has been the most challenging aspect of working together as a team, and how have you overcome it?

James Mischka: “When we started the company together, we had to both attend every fitting, be on every fabric appointment, negotiate every design. 36 years later, we can be in two places at once – one in Spain working on accessories, the other in New York for the main collection, or both in Italy designing our bridal collection – that’s a true luxury.”

What is one project or design that you’re particularly proud of, and why?

James Mischka: “Every time we hear from someone who has worn Badgley Mischka and felt strong and empowered, that is what we love to hear.”

The fashion industry is known for its fast pace. How do you keep your designs fresh and relevant in such a dynamic environment?

Mark Badgley: “We speak to our clients all the time – after all, they are our friends as well! The best way to stay relevant is to listen.”

Photographer: Rodrigo Rodrich

What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned over the years as designers?

James Mischka: “The most important thing to do is to stay true to yourself. Do not try to be everything to everybody. “

How do you hope Badgley Mischka will be remembered in the fashion industry?

Mark Badgley: “As those two American guys who made women all over the world feel beautiful.”

If you could design an outfit for anyone, past or present, who would it be and why?

James Mischka: “Hands down, Elizabeth Taylor in the 1950’s – she always inspires us.”

From their early days of dressing Winona Ryder for the Oscars, their first Vogue cover, and first window at Bergdorf Goodman to this moment at New York Fashion Week, Badgley Mischka continues to craft designs that make women around the world feel beautiful and empowered. Their journey remains a testament to staying true to oneself while evolving with the ever-changing tides of fashion

NAEEM KHAN

Naeem Khan's Spring/Summer 2025 collection debuted in a breathtaking runway show at The Angel Orensanz Foundation, where the ethereal designs were perfectly complemented by the venue's soaring arches and intricate stained-glass windows. Drawing inspiration from the grandeur of Sicilian Baroque architecture and the serene landscapes of Puglia, the collection bursts with vibrant hues reflecting pink sunsets, tranquil seas, and lush greenery. THREADS OF BETRAYAL

Malan Breton's SS 2025 Collection at NYFW

Photography by Ailin

In a stunning display of fashion's emotional depth, Malan Breton's SS 2025 collection transported audiences into a world of Betrayal, Revenge, and Hope. Drawing inspiration from the dark allure of 19th and 20th-century fairy tales, Breton fused fantasy with reality in his collection, creating a visual narrative of powerful contrasts. Models strode down the runway in sinuous designs, from summer-weight wools to rich leather and silk brocades, each look embodying the complex emotions woven into the collection’s themes.

The show, set to a soundtrack composed by Breton himself and deejayed by Zeke Thomas, was a multi-sensory experience, enhancing the grandeur of his fine tailoring and dramatic flair. With styling by Marco Maranghello and Vincenza Carovillano, the beauty and fashion worlds collided in a captivating, dreamlike presentation that left audiences enchanted and introspective. Breton's latest chapter in his fashion saga showcased his signature artistry, cementing his role as a master storyteller in design.

Bold Ideas, Surprising Spaces

New York Fashion Week, held twice a year in the fall and winter, has changed significantly over the last decade. What used to be held in iconic spots like Bryant Park and Lincoln Center has now spread across the city, popping up in some unexpected places. This year, streetwear brand Brkln Bloke took over Grand Central Station for a runway show, while Ralph Lauren brought his show to the calm of the Hamptons. Big names like Jill Biden and Usher were also in the mix.

Another remarkable shift is the rise of presentations. Designers now host all-day showcases instead of traditional runway shows, giving more access to view. These setups use models, mannequins, and even performance art to bring the collections to life.

Fashion Week Highlights

One of the most inspiring aspects of Fashion Week is the innovative approaches of new designers. They are always on the pulse of the future, pushing boundaries and introducing new concepts. This year, FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) put on a show called BEYOND: A Celebration of Boundless Creativity and Unity in Diversity. The show featured the work of young designers who are redefining the fashion landscape, showcasing their unique and boundary-pushing designs.

Bryan Barrientos, is a Peruvian American designer, redefining modern evening wear with his unique approach. He breaks traditional boundaries and emphasizes couture craftsmanship, creating a distinct style that sets him apart.

Yoon Seo Lee, a South Korean streetwear designer, masterfully blends contrasting elements to embody duality. Her innovative approach incorporates 3D printing into garments and accessories, pushing the boundaries of creativity.

Co-founders, design duo, and identical twins Dynasty and Soull Ogun of L' Enchanteur invited us to Brooklyn for their fashion inspired performance art collection. The duo had this to say: “The Spring Summer 2025 collection is a call to action to remember and honor the ancient wisdom that resides within all of us. Each piece holds a key, and through it, we hope you find your own door to unlock.”

We were thrilled to catch up with one of our favorite NYC designers, Rodney Epperson, and his brand, Epperson. His transformative style empowers wearers, allowing them to express who they are while taking them where they need to go. Every piece in his collection has its own unique twist, seamlessly fitting any moment or setting.

Epperson’s studio, located at 40 East 58th Street in NYC, is where the magic happens. He has dressed stars like Alicia Keys and Venus Williams, and was a contestant on season 6 of Project Runway. When asked who he would love to design for, dead or alive, his answer was Whitney Houston.

Marc Forgione Reintroduces His Iconic Restaurant in Tribeca

Marc Forgione, the celebrated Iron Chef winner and Michelin star recipient who is known for his innovative take on New American cuisine, has relaunched his namesake restaurant, now simply called Forgione, in a new Tribeca location rich with culinary history. Originally opened in 2008 on Reade Street, the restaurant has moved to 30 Hudson Street, a venue formerly home to iconic establishments such as Chef David Bouley’s Danube and Brushstroke. This relocation not only reintroduces the beloved institution but also underscores Forgione's ongoing commitment to elevating New York’s dining scene through his group, Respect Hospitality.

The transition to the new space reflects both continuity and evolution. Forgione's design, led by 71 Collective, maintains the signature well-worn, vintage charm of the original location while adding modern touches and design elements from reclaimed materials, including original columns and shutters from the Reade Street building. Notably, a hutch from the Vanderbilt Mansion and artwork by Peter Tunney anchor the space, offering a nod to both history and the spirit of New York City.

A Culinary Journey with Innovation at Its Core

Forgione's new menu showcases his signature creativity, focusing on seasonal, local ingredients. Guests will find a blend of exciting new dishes and timeless favorites that reflect his culinary journey over the past 16 years. Highlights from the menu include his iconic signature palate tingling Hiramasa, which begins with a Szechuan button followed by the fresh acidic flavors of the hiramasa tartare, along with avocado, pine nut, and saratoga chips. Grilled Tomahawk Steak for 2, and Pastrami Hanger au Pierre Poivre. Returning favorites like Chili Lobster and the Snowdance Farms Chicken Under a Brick celebrate the restaurant’s rich history, while desserts like The Egg offer playful and inventive endings to the meal. Chef Connor Pratt, who began his career with

Forgione as a student six years ago, now helms the kitchen as Chef de Cuisine, continuing to drive the restaurant’s reputation for exceptional culinary craftsmanship.

The beverage program at Forgione is equally as ambitious, with seasonal cocktails that mirror the innovative spirit of the menu. Overseen by Wine Director Grace Phillips and Head Sommelier Kyle Sachs, the offerings include a carefully curated wine list featuring selections from France, Italy, and California. NORTHWELL HEALTH SUMMER HAMPTONS EVENING EVENT RAISES RECORD $1.6M FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH RESEARCH AND PROGRAMS

Northwell Health’s Katz Institute for Women’s Health raised a record-setting $1.6 million in support of women’s health research and programs at the sixth annual Summer Hamptons Evening (SHE).

This year’s fundraising surpasses the previous record of $1 million and brings the total raised since the event’s inception to more than $5 million. Three hundred supporters attended the event on August 3rd, which was held for the sixth consecutive year at the Water Mill, NY, residence of Victoria Moran-Furman, who

hosted alongside lead sponsors Iris and Saul Katz (benefactors of Northwell’s Katz Institute), Eric Moran and celebrity event planner Larry Scott (of Lawrence Scott Events). Rosanna Scotto, anchor of “Good Day New York” on WNYW-Fox 5 News, served as emcee.

Supporters of the event are raising health for women in the communities Northwell serves. The Katz Institute for Women’s Health is driven by the Katzes’ vision that women at every life stage should receive access to the best individualized care and resources. The institute has

created the only certified network of experts — including more than 850 clinicians, scientists and researchers — who are uniquely qualified to address the health care needs of women.

The evening featured a discussion between Stacey E. Rosen, MD, senior vice president for women’s health at Northwell, executive director of the Katz Institute and the Partners Council Professor of Women’s Health, and Eugenia Gianos, MD, director of cardiovascular prevention at Northwell and director of women’s heart health at Lenox Hill Hospital.

Drs. Rosen and Gianos discussed Northwell's unique ability to provide personalized, integrated care and programs to ensure a comprehensive continuum of cardiovascular care for all women.

“We see and treat women differently and invest continually in this care through research, clinical programs and patient-centered offerings,” said Dr. Rosen, who was named presidentelect of the American Heart Association, the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health, for 2024-2025. “It has enabled us to keep elevating a standard of care that is amplified throughout Northwell’s footprint.”

The event also highlighted the story of Northwell patient Monica Aliseo of Farmingdale, NJ, whose family has hypercholesterolemia, a genetic condition that causes dangerously high

levels of cholesterol, increasing risk of heart disease and other cardiovascular issues.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States, noted Dr. Gianos, who chairs the American College of Cardiology’s Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease Section and treats almost a dozen members of Aliseo’s family, including her siblings, children, nieces and nephews.

“We are on a mission to help women like Monica safeguard their health from one generation to the next so they can live longer, better lives,” said Dr. Gianos. “This includes all aspects of their care, from heart and brain health to gynecological care and healthy aging, as part of a holistic model of care. This paradigm of providing a patient-focused, aggressive prevention plan much earlier in life truly sets Northwell apart.”

The SHE event advances Northwell’s Outpacing the Impossible campaign, a comprehensive $1.4 billion fundraising effort that supports Northwell’s promise to the people it serves. The campaign’s objectives include improving hospitals and clinical programs, accelerating research and funding endowment.

In addition to the lead sponsors, other supporters for the evening included Premier Sponsors Beth & Peter Hammack and Iris & Michael Smith and Champion Sponsors Diane & Adam Blank; Burner Prudenti Law, P.C.; Margaret M. Crotty & Rory Riggs; Michelle & Robert Fox; Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank; Alicia & Frank Grande and Grande Cosmetics; Ideal Home Health; Alyssa & Todd Katz; Dayle & Michael Katz; Shari Levine & David Augarten; The Lipsay Family Charitable Foundation; Adita & Marcus Mordachini; Cori & Kenny Orr; and Ruth & Michael Slade.

Each match attracts thousands of spectators from New York City, Fairfield, and around the world, who enjoy an afternoon of world-class polo sport with friends and family. The club offers a variety of experiences, from lawn picnic seating with reserved umbrellas and painted circles in the grass, to reserved bistro tables in front of the grandstand, private SkyBoxes, or tickets to The Players' Lounge tent. For larger groups or special occasions, consider booking a Player's Lounge Suite for ten guests or a private cabana for up to 25. Entry to Greenwich Polo club is keeping in tradition with a car pass.

One of the highlights of the occasion is The Pony Bar by The Cup Bearer (@the_cup_bearer), featuring NYC's top show bartenders and customcrafted Polo-inspired cocktails. Grab your "Chukker" and partake in the storied polo tradition of stomping the divots during halftime. The Greenwich Polo Club offers the most Instagram-worthy venue to visit this summer.

Many of the world's top players, including Mariano Aguerre, Facundo Pieres, Hilario Ulloa, and Nacho Figueras, have graced the fields of the Greenwich Polo Club. Each spring, these players bring their champion horses to compete for one of Polo's most prestigious cups.

CONSCIOUS WEALTH by Brandon

An Intentional and Mindful Approach to Wealth.

For many high-net-worth individuals, achieving substantial wealth can bring unexpected obstacles. While unlimited financial means can provide comfort and lifestyle, this level of wealth can also result in a life that feels empty and estranged. Family conversations around philanthropy, inheritance, and other financial matters can fuel conflict and tension. Managing family money becomes more onerous than actually creating wealth in the first place.

Conscious Wealth: Money, Investing, and a Financial Awakening for the Person Who Has It All is for those who realize they have everything they always wanted and discover that it is not enough. Conscious Wealth helps high-performing family leaders transform how they view success. By reframing what wealth means, they can remove what exhausts them and infuse what fulfills them.

Hatton advocates that at the highest levels of Conscious Wealth, the excess money held by some of us can unify the collective us. It can benefit not only ourselves and our children, but those on the other side of town—or earth for that matter—whom we have never met. With a Conscious Wealth mindset, you'll differentiate between being rich and being wealthy, becoming a more effective leader, and enjoying a more satisfying life.

HERE’S WHAT THEY’RE READING AT THE BENJAMIN

It’s a journey that most deem an insane impossibility. Yet on October 20th, 1811, Lydia Latrobe Roosevelt— daughter of one of the architects of the United States Capitol—fearlessly boards the steamship New Orleans in Pittsburgh. Eight months pregnant and with a toddler in tow, Lydia is fiercely independent despite her youth. She’s also accustomed to defying convention. Against her father’s wishes, she married his much older

business colleague, inventor Nicholas Roosevelt—builder of the New Orleans—and spent her honeymoon on a primitive flatboat. But the stakes for this trip are infinitely higher. If Nicholas’s untried steamboat reaches New Orleans, it will serve as a profitable packet ship between that city and Natchez, proving the power of steam as it travels up and down the Mississippi. Success in this venture would revolutionize travel and trade, open the west to expansion, and secure the Roosevelts’ future.

Lydia had used her own architectural training to design the flatboat’s interior, including a bedroom, sitting area, and fireplace. The steamship, however, dwarfs the canoes and flatboats on the river. And no amount of power or comfort could shield its passengers from risk. Lydia believes herself ready for all the dangers ahead—growing unrest among native people, disease or injury, and the turbulent Falls of the Ohio, a sixty-foot drop long believed impassable in such a large boat.

But there are other challenges in store, impossible to predict as Lydia boards that fall day. Challenges which—if survived—will haunt and transform her, as surely as the journey will alter the course of a nation . . .

DAUGHTER

OF A PROMISE

Days after graduating from college, Betsabé Ruiz begins her first job on Wall Street, where she plans to save enough money to eventually pursue her dreams of becoming a theatre actress. What she didn’t anticipate was that this job would allow her barely enough free time to sleep or hang out with friends, let alone take acting classes. She didn’t apprehend the magnitude of the wealth that would be swirling about her, either, or how the long hours and close quarters would infuse her professional relationships with intimacy. Still, she does her best to navigate this uncharted territory at work, where she makes an unlikely best friend and develops an unexpected attraction to her boss. Told in the retrospective as a letter to her unborn son, Daughter of a Promise is a coming-of-age tale in which a naïve Betsabé assumed leaving her past behind was the prerequisite for succeeding as an adult. The wisdom she ultimately passes on to her child, however, is steeped in the very traditions within which her grandmother raised her back in Miami.
