THE LAST DAYS OF SUMMER
A
s we head into the dog days of summer in August, this is a period to relax and enjoy the bounties of summer from vacationing in exotic locales to enjoying the company of friends and loved ones while entertaining at home before Labor Day arrives along with the flurry of Fall activities.
This month we had a chance to get up close and personal with comedian Steve Guttenberg and Broadway sensation Matthew Morrison. As a queen of philanthropy and a fixture on the social circuit of New York City and the Hamptons, Jean Shafiroff has dedicated her life to giving and helping others and was the perfect cover for this month’s theme on entertaining. August is also a month of heady leisure which was the theme of our photo shoot in Sag Harbor aboard a luxurious Benetti 93 yacht that was a perfect setting to showcase this summer’s beautiful fashion and swimwear. The scene in Miami Beach sizzled as we headed down to South Beach for Miami Swim to see a dazzling array of new trends in swimwear, which offered plenty of gorgeous options for next season. One of my favorite topics is beauty as we highlighted the best at home and technologically advanced devices that reveal amazing results at a fraction of the cost of a medi spa. As dining is always on our minds, we explored the sizzling dining scene in NYC, Miami and the Hamptons highlighting new hotspots around the city as well as perennial favorites that comprise the dynamic culinary scene of NYC. We also scoped the globe for the most luxurious escapes around the world. From weekend getaways to Sin City and Nantucket, to a gastronomic European journey aboard a Windstar cruise, and exotic Mexican resorts in Cabo San Lucas and the Riviera Maya- summer is all about leisure and enjoying the great outdoors. Summer also marks the peak of the charity circuit with a flurry of philanthropic endeavors in the Hamptons and beyond and we have it all covered in this issue.

Jason Bourne, Free State of Jones, Star Trek & The Infiltrator
Keri Russell @ Free State of Jones
Matt Damon & Luciana Barroso @ Jason Bourne
Matthew McConaughey is creating Oscar buzz for his compelling new civil war epic Free State of Jones. “I love an underdog who’s fighting the establishment, someone who thinks on their own and whose own morals are enough to wage a war on.” This thrilling movie also features Keri Russell who is also captivating and sexy in the FX TV series The Americans, about Russian spies vs the CIA. Kerry said “McConaughey’s character has a lot of flaws and grit and he’s a rebel-rouser.” See this movie!......Matt Damon is buffer than ever in Jason Bourne, the new installment of this sizzling movie series. He confided, “This movie opens with an austerity riot in Athens. It feels current with what’s going on in our world. You’re always creating an alternate reality with Bourne, but you want to feel like it’s our world.”…… Star Trek Beyond co-staring Chris Pine has hit the big screens and Zoe Saldana who plays Uhura says, “Now that we kinda speak sci-fi, we are able to improv sometimes.”…. Bryan Cranston and John Leguizamo turn in electrifying performances in The Infiltrator. This dramatic duo goes undercover to help bring down cocaine king Pablo Esbabor’s international bank. Cranston said “When you’re telling a lie, start with the truth because it makes it easier and it makes it more plausible. You don’t want to overcomplicate when you’re developing an undercover identity. It’s the kind of thing the CIA guys are doing.” theinfiltrator.com

THE WHITE ROSE NEW YORK By Jennifer Azzolini
T
extile maven Michelle Zahabian Baradarian, grew up in New York and has been around fabrics since birth. Growing up in the Upper East Side and Soho she was able to experiment with different styles of clothes balancing graphic prints and employing draping techniques. By combining her innate sense of uptown chic with the effortlessly cool vibe of downtown, Michelle came to find black and white as a staple with both styles, where your possibilities become endless. As a busy modern woman who takes on a multitude of roles, she wanted to create a line that can go from day to night with a versatile collection that is beautiful yet comfortable, and effortlessly chic.
With her degree from Pratt in fine arts and fine arts education she wanted to bring that love of the textile industry to her children, which was the impetus behind the creation of her company Jemz- a fun and interactive sewing and arts workshop for kids and adults. Meeting many women over her time through Jemz, she found there was a need for those staple pieces for women on the go, where they can dress it up with a pop of color or statement accessories. This core collection of beautiful and classic staple pieces led to the creation of The White Rose. Michelle’s debut collection is elegant and sophisticated, resembling a beautiful white rose. It represents timeless-
ness, for the busy woman who wants to feel comfortable with a boho-chic twist that can be worn anytime, day or night. Michelle’s versatile line breaks the boundaries of age and body shape with cuts that are designed to flatter women with curves or thinner physiques with her expert draping techniques and can be worn from a woman in her 20s up to her 70s. A firm believer that a woman should wear the clothes vs the clothes wearing the woman, The White Rose is a beautiful canvas for which women can express themselves in a confident and modern way.

ory Burch, Vera Wang, Renee Zellweger, Michael J. Fox and West Wing star Allison Janney have all turned to designer Lisa Jackson for her unique design aesthetic. With an eye for edgy design and the drive to make her visions come to life, Jackson has always created beauty. Beginning her career as a private Art and Antiques Consultant, she traveled the globe in search of exceptional art and rare antiques before entering the world of interior design. A few years back, Jackson took a step in a new direction and launched LJ Cross, a fashion-forward line of crosses featuring innovative designs and gemstones. She began designing crosses as a tribute to her late brother Steven, who consistently wore multiple crosses. Jackson has utilized her signature minimalist style and eclectic design sense to create bold statements and unique looks for each piece. Using the highest quality gemstones, each piece reflects a keen sense of modernity while embracing timeless spirituality.
Diamonds for the Beach With the launch of her new “Diamonds for the Beach” collection, available at Saks 5th Avenue, Copious Row in Sag Harbor and Greenwich, Connecticut as well as her boutique at 994 Madison Ave, Jackson hopes to challenge the way peo-

ple look at fine jewelry. “People sort of look at fine jewelry and they’re just not that comfortable with going outside the box and just wearing it and living with it,” she said. “I have an antithetical way of looking at this.” While the collection itself is made with precious materials, Jackson doesn’t want her customers to be shy with what they wear.“For my first collection for the line I chose to work in rose gold and white gold with white and champagne diamonds,” said Jackson. “Even though I’m working with real gemstones it’s not jewelry for the safe. I see it with white t-shirts, jeans, into night with an organza slip dress and over your favorite caftan. It’s all about just throwing it on and feeling comfortable and not treating it as precious.”
Monogrammed Accessories Jackson’s most popular items, her hand-painted monogrammed accessories, began with her love of text paintings. “I’m a huge fan of text paintings, so we started hand painting messages on t-shirts and totes in the store,” she said. After a while, however, Jackson had an idea. “My besties call me LJ and I sign everything LJ,” she said. I’m like, “oh that’s a little bit of my signature, why don’t I just paint an LJ and put it on the bag and once I did that people were like, ‘I want one of those.’” LJ has now expanded their monogram
collection to pretty much anything you can paint on and of course you can have your own initials on eveything . “Now we have a small off-site artist studio with a couple of painters that come in because the program is just so big,” said Jackson. “First came the monogram in paint and then came the making it in gemstones. It’s new and that’s when Allison Janney just bought the A, we just so happened to have an A. It was white gold with white diamonds and it was the perfect storm kind of thing.”
Pop of Color As for the future, she plans to add a pop of color to her designs. “ For the first time, I’m now working in color for my jewelry, “ she said. “For my fall program I’m working in cornelian and fire opals. I’m just having fun playing with color. I love mixing colors so it’s given me a chance to have this new palette and have a whole new presentation of what we do because it’s really fun and magical. Think about chocolate brown diamonds, sapphires and Peridot in the same piece. Whether it’s an ID bracelet or it’s a bangle embedded in rose gold, still using our same cobblestone technique but changing up the colors a lot.” Ljcrossnny.com

SIR IVAN THE PEACEMAN BY Cecilia Morales
Imagine All The People Sir Ivan’s smash hit single, an uptempo dance remake of John Lennon’s “Imagine,” has topped charts nationwide and piqued the ears of millions. Sir Ivan worked with a Grammy Award winning producer in order to create a song that invoked peace during a wave of terrorism. In addition to the album version, there are many additional remixes done by a variety of DJs from all over the world. The most popular one on the radio and the one receiving thousands of downloads and streams on iTunes is called the 7th Heaven Radio Mix. However, Sir Ivan’s sole goal wasn’t to create a Top 40 favorite. For him, the iconic
ballad is a call for harmony and amity, something that is personal to the musician’s past. “I picked that song because my late father was an Auschwitz survivor and 59 of my relatives were murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust,” he said. “That’s the reason I chose to remake all the iconic antiwar songs from the Woodstock days. On my new album “Peaceman Shines” I went back to the 60s and early 70s because it was the first time in history where people woke up and were concerned about human rights and social issues.”
Kiss All The Bullies Goodbye The Peaceman’s revolutionary activism is being
carried out today through Sir Ivan’s dedication to the LGBT community and others that suffer from PTSD. “I did an anti-bullying song when I found out that the attempted suicide rate in the teenage LGBT community is 3 to 5 times higher than the straight teen group,” Sir Ivan continues, “It was to bring awareness to the bullying problem to begin with and how severe it was for LGBT people.” However, Sir Ivan feels that the future looks promising for the younger generations. The younger generation is much more tolerant than the older generation when it comes to sexual preferences and…”what’s normal,” he said. “It’s sort of like they’ve learned by themselves, fortunately.” The Peaceman Foundation and Sir Ivan have contributed over $500,000 to many different non-profits since the charity’s founding in 2005. In addition to the LGBT community, he also gives to other organizations. “I support the Wounded Warriors and the soldiers fighting for us to be free,” said Sir Ivan.
Erotic Art Museum In addition to his music, Sir Ivan owns and operates a collection of art unique to him and his family. “My mom passed away last year so my brother sister and I inherited the World Erotic Art Museum in South Beach” he said. “It’s the largest privately owned collection of erotic art on display in the world…We’re going to show it off at Art Basel and make it an annual erotic art party in memory of my mom.”
60 Candles After celebrating his 60th birthday in January in Miami, Sir Ivan plans to celebrate this August in the Hamptons, “I’ve made three invitations. Mainstream press gets an invitation that says it’s an Adam & Eve party. Gay press gets an invitation that says it’s an Adam & Steve party. And lesbian press is getting an Eva & Eve invitation because I want everyone to feel welcome.” The party’s dress code is “undress to impress” which is “fig leaves or less,” says Sir Ivan. “I’m performing on top of one of the castle balconies. The entire tennis court is going to be a dance floor, not to mention the elaborate decorations. I don’t want to give it away, but you’re really going to feel like you’re in the “Garden of Eden.” sirivan.com

THE QUEEN OF PHILANTROPHY
JEAN SHAFIROFF
By James Bernstein
W
hen Jean Shafiroff crosses a Manhattan street and comes across a well-known figure in the world of philanthropy, fashion, business or government, there is an immediate recognition and a pleasant exchange. The same happens when she in spending time in the Hamptons. Shafiroff is a well-known figure in New York City and in the Hamptons. She stands out, even in places where stand-outs are the norm. Shafiroff is known for her work with women’s and children’s organizations. She also works with the under-privileged, animals and in the healthcare field. She serves on seven philanthropic boards, including the New York Mission Society, the New York Women’s Foundation, the French Heritage Society, Couture Council (Museum of the Fashion Institute of Technology), and the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services.
She has been honored by the America Heart Association and the American Cancer Society, among several other organizations. But perhaps most electrifying of all, Shafiroff says anyone can be a philanthropist, according to her recently-published book, “Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life By What You Give.” Anyone can be a philanthropist, Shafiroff says, even if they don’t have money to give. There are so many other ways they can donate, such as giving their time and their skills.
good. Those who have sufficient resources, Shafiroff feels, have an obligation to donate their own funds. “I have made a life out of giving, raising money for causes in which I believe, and I want to share what I have learned with as many people as possible,” Shafiroff said. She says she is not an authority on the subject, but has learned enough over the years to discuss the issue and provide guidance.
As a result, Shafiroff is recognized as the vanguard of a new movement of modern philanthropists who move beyond financial contributions and give of their time and knowledge.
And she has been expanding her philanthropy work, which began in New York City, where she lives with her husband, Martin Shafiroff, an investment advisor, and their two daughters, Jacqueline and Elizabeth. Their girls share their mother’s passion for charitable causes.
Her book provides details and explains just how someone can be fulfilled by a philosophy of doing
Among the exciting events that have been occurring in Shafiroff’s life recently are overseas trips to

rescue homeless dogs with her daughter Elizabeth Shafiroff and Lindsey Spielfogal who plan to start an animal rescue charity. She has also funded several dog rescue groups. Shafiroff has traveled several times to Costa Rica and to Nicaragua, and managed to bring home with her suffering canines that badly needed medical care, love, and a forever home. The dogs Shafiroff brought back with her to New York are now with loving families. The expansion of Shafiroff’s philanthropic endeavors now include television and radio talks, including a recent talk at the Princeton Club in Manhattan. Shafiroff is often asked what she personally gets out of her life of giving. “I think those who are blessed must have a sense of service, duty and responsibility to others,” she has said. “We cannot forget that we are all put here on this earth and we are all the same. We must look out for one another.” And that’s what Shafiroff has been doing. She has helped raise a great deal of money for charitable organizations, including several million dollars for Southampton Hospital. At the hospital, she is regarded by top executives as indispensable to the medical facility’s charitable and fund-raising operations. She has chaired some of the most successful fund-raising Galas Southampton Hospital has ever held. She is involved with the Ellen Hermanson Foundation, which raises money for breast cancer research and care. Shafiroff has played a large role in fund-raising and helping to raise awareness for the Southampton Animal Shelter, a particular favorite of hers because of the work the Shelter has done over the years. Shafiroff has appeared at news conferences with the Suffolk County SPCA to help bring a spotlight to its work rescuing abused animals that are found living in filthy conditions or on the streets. Since Shafiroff divides her time between homes in Southampton and Manhattan, she has come to understand the differences in philanthropic work in both places. Such work in the Hamptons must be done in a shorter period of time, since vacationers and tourists spend summers there only. The winter scene in New York City is longer. Events can be held weeknights, after working hours. In addition to honors from the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society, Shafiroff has been honored also by the New York Mission Society, the Youth Counseling League, the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services, Surgeons of Hope, the Ellen Hermanson Foundation, Pet Philanthropy Circle and

Shafiroff is a standout in the media world. She was featured in Hamptons Magazine’s “Best Dressed List,” and was ranked as the fourth most-photographed woman in New York City by New York Magazine. She has also been featured on many regional magazines covers. She has been the subject of articles in The Wall Street Journal, Gotham Magazine, The New York Times, the New York Social Diary, and the Huffington Post, among others. For Shafiroff, life began in a small Long Island town, where her father was a music teacher and director of music in a public school district. Her mother and father instilled in her a sense of giving, purpose and drive, Shafiroff has said. She learned those lessons well. “I’ve always kept the ideals I learned from my father close to my heart,” Shafiroff said. “He was loved by everyone, his students, the administrators, parents and other teachers. His life has always served as a guidepost for me.” Education has always been important to Shafiroff. She earned an MBA from the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University and a BS in Physical Therapy from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons. After graduation, she worked as a therapist at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York City. Once she earned her MBA, she took demanding and fast-paced positions with Wall Street firms, working in public finance and private partnerships. While getting her MBA, Shafiroff met the man who would later become her husband, Martin Shafiroff. What is ahead for this remarkable woman? She wants to expand her philanthropic work nationally and internationally. What does this entail? More travelling for rescue missions, lending a hand to help Southampton Hospital raise money and expand in the community, giving her time to the Southampton Animal Shelter as well as the womens and children’s organizations on which she focuses, and seeking out opportunities to help others to continue the cycle of philanthropy, even if they do not have a lot of money themselves to give. “That’s the whole point of philanthropy,” Shafiroff says. “It’s all about passing along what you have learned, turning other people into giving and loving individuals, and spreading the word that it is possible to do good in this world, no matter your own personal circumstances.” Shafiroff lives a whirlwind life of organizing, meeting, planning, giving, serving and seeking. She seeks no personal gain from any of it. Her goal is to spread the word of giving, something she never gets tired of doing.

54 | resident.com
combines two state-of-the-art lasers that work in synergy utilizing different energies to smooth and firm. Results are a natural luminosity that also provides the long-term result of stimulating new collagen production. The first laser used is the GentleMax Pro, which features dual wavelength technology that works by heating the skin to encourage the fibroblast cells to stimulate collagen. The second laser, the VBeam, follows to reduce any redness caused by the previous laser while also additionally stimulating the production of collagen. The pairing of these two lasers during the same treatment results in zero downtime and maximizes the production of collagen while also lifting, firming and tightening the skin by rejuvenating it in 3-D. The treatment can be performed
not only on the face but also on the much neglected neck and décolleté areas as well. It can even be combined with Dr. Gross’ famous Alpha Beta Peel, leaving your skin dramatically vibrant and smooth. It is recommended to do the 3-D Collagen Laser Treatment in a series of three, however that depends on each individual’s skin type. Although your complexion will look instantly glowing and plump, tightening will slowly occur in about a week or two after, as well as an overall reduction in fine lines and diminished wrinkles over six weeks. drdennisgrossmd.com

TRANSFORM YOUR LOOK AT [SALON]718 By Alyssa Montalbano
W
ith over 20 years of experience, globally trained professional hair stylist Michaella BlissettWilliams, mother of three and a thriving businesswoman, is the proud owner of the trendy [salon]718, a trio of salons located in the most beloved pockets of Brooklyn, NY. Beginning her career at a prestigious salon under Richard Calcasola, owner Maximus Spa Salon, BlissettWilliams quickly rose through the ranks, training over 50 stylists along with spearheading the opening of three salons in the New York Area prior to opening up her own salon. Blissett-Williams is best known for her transformation makeovers. Her ability to provide clients with a fresh look while helping boost one’s self-esteem has been one of the most rewarding aspects of her job. “I always knew I wanted to be a hairstylist. My mom actually went to beauty school and opened her own salon at age 35. I spent almost every day in my teens working there. Learning my craft and the fundamentals of being a businesswoman from my mom had a huge impact on my career.
60 | resident.com
I’m proud to have followed in her footsteps and blessed to have three salons of my own today,” commented Blissett-Williams when asked if she always wanted to pursue hair styling. In 2012, Blissett-Williams opened her first outpost in Fort Greene. The Incomparable
MATTHEW MORRISON By Kristen Oliveri
M
atthew Morrison, well known celebrity extraordinaire, who sings, acts, and dances, can be considered what those in the industry call a “crossover success.” He went from starring every night on Broadway to then transitioning quite seamlessly to the silver screen. This song and dance man, whose idol is the iconic Gene Kelly, was Broadway bound from an early age. After attending a top notch high school for the performing arts and NYU Tisch, he began making a name for himself on Broadway, starring in such blockbusters as Footloose, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Hairspray. He achieved television popularity and stardom when he was cast in the FOX musical comedy television show Glee as the thoughtful, fun-loving and exceptionally talented Mr. Schue. After becoming a household name after the show wrapped, Morrison went straight back to the theater in the Harvey Weinstein musical Finding Neverland starring as J.M Barrie, a role for which he received critical acclaim. Today, Morrison seems to be everywhere—guest starring on The Good Wife and preparing himself for a one night only engagement with The New York Pops. While he shared with Resident that he hopes to take some time for himself and his family this summer, we aren’t completely convinced Morrison plans to slow down any time soon.
resident.com | 79
Morrison sits down with Resident Contributor Kristen Oliveri: Q: You’re performing with the iconic New York Pops this summer in New York City. How did that particular performance and partnership come about? A: I’ve been fortunate enough to perform with many of our country’s greatest conductors, but one of the best conductors of our times in Steven Reineke, the music director and conductor of the New York Pops. He proposed putting an engagement together with myself and the New York Pops at the Forest Hills Stadium in Queens. As for what’s in store for the show, we haven’t come up with our set list just yet. It’ll be comprised of some standards, but whenever I get up on the stage, what I really love to do is dance—Gene Kelly is my idol. I’m looking forward to it especially since I just wrapped up my stint at 54 Below, one of my favorite venues to perform in. I’m at my best when I can interact with my audience.
Q: Can you tell me about your current projects? A: For years I worked tirelessly, taking on projects when they would come, but now I’m at the point in my career where I can be more choosey with what I want to do. I was offered a few different pilots after I wrapped Glee, but nothing was speaking to me. I got married in October 2014, and my wife and I put our honeymoon on hold. This summer, we’re taking that delayed honeymoon and have planned to travel for a month long throughout Europe and Africa. We’ll be visiting England, France, Italy and Africa. Africa has been on top of our list of places to visit, and I cannot wait to be immersed in such a beautiful experience.
Q: What do you like to do when you’re living and working in the Big Apple? A: Summer is the most exciting time to be in the city, in my opinion. I love going upstate and to the Hamptons and there’s just more energy in the city. It feels like everyone’s more rambunctious. I love getting together with friends who often host barbecues in the city and then hitting up fun cocktail bars after. My wife and I love off-the-beaten path restaurants and bars like Bar Central. We also love this little Peruvian place in our neighborhood in Chelsea that we go to all the time. Another favorite of ours is La Bodega Negra with really great Latin food and spectacular cocktails. Our neighborhood is changing with so much construction going on, which is great for us in the long run, upping our

real estate value.
Q: What books are you currently reading? A: I’m actually reading Pirate Hunters: Treasure, Obsession, and the Search for a Legendary Pirate Ship by Robert Kurson. It’s about these guys who are actually deep sea divers in search of pirate ships. For my travels, I’m looking forward to getting into The Agony and the Ecstasy which is Michelangelo’s life story and we’ll be in Italy and looking forward to checking out everywhere that’s mentioned in the book.
Q: What’s next for you in your career? A: I’ve established myself as a true artist – I’ve had a certain amount of accolades and I think I’ve gained the respect of my peers. I will always want to come back to the stage, but after coming off of Finding Neverland with such a grueling schedule, I’d like to do some more TV and film for a while and then come back to Broadway. My focus now and hopefully going forward is also on the philanthropic side of things. Dr. Ralph Opacic launched the performing arts school I went to, Orange County School of the Arts, and he and I are working very closely in 2017 to open two new schools in California including San Diego County and probably in North Hollywood. For 2017-2018, we plan to roll out two more schools and make this a nationwide performing arts charter school. I wouldn’t be where I am if I hadn’t had the education I had. They have a culinary arts program, visual arts, film, media, creative writing and so many different outlets that the school provides and I’m truly excited for this venture. Our eventual goal is to get into New York as well.
Q: What was your go-to audition song in your early years? A: “On The Street Where You Live” from My Fair Lady. It’s actually the one song I sang for every audition, including Glee. That song shares such great storytelling, and I appreciate that a lot since you don’t find that quality as much in music today.
Q: If you weren’t a performer, what would you be? A: In my junior year of high school, I was met with a dilemma – to pursue the arts or athletics. I was a pretty good soccer player, and had some opportunities to continue with it as a career. However, as you can see, I chose to stick with the arts. With that being said, the answer would be athlete.
Q: Who’s one famous person (dead or alive) that you’d like to have dinner with? A: Gene Kelly.

Matthew Morrison Wows NYC Crowd with the New York Pops On Thursday July 7, Matthew Morrison took to the stage at Queensbased Forest Hills Stadium with fellow Broadway icon, Megan Hilty for a special evening of song, dance and spectacular music, celebrating classic Broadway style. Morrison and Hilty were supported by the incredible New York Pops, conducted by Steven Reineke, their renowned music director and conductor. Morrison channeled his inner (and outer) song-and-dance man persona to perform such classics as Come Fly With Me, On the Street Where You Live and Singin’ in the Rain. He also paired up with Hilty for a touching rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow where Morrison played his beloved ukulele throughout the duet. Another shining moment was when Morrison returned to his beginnings on Broadway to sing a medley from Hairspray— one of his first Broadway productions in which he played Link Larson. As for the closing of the evening, it came full circle Morrison ending with a medley from his latest show, Finding Neverland. An audible sigh was heard throughout the crowd when the performance was over and it was clear to see we all wanted more of Matthew Morrison.

A
lot of people will remember Steve Guttenberg from his 1984 comedy film Police Academy where he plays a bumbling and clumsy policeman-in-training. Popular at the time, the film’s legacy seems to have bled into more recent films and shows, notably the hit movies 21 and 22 Jump Street. Though these two movies are remakes of the 21 Jump Street TV show, the silliness of the two policemen is extremely reminiscent of Steve Guttenberg’s character in the film. He also played in other big films like 3 Men and a Baby and Short Circuit. Growing up in a small home in Long Island, Guttenberg’s childhood is perhaps best marked by his close relationship with his family. He enjoyed an interesting combination of personalities with his
parents, his father being a US Army Ranger before becoming a cop, and his mother being a gentle and very sweet woman. From this, Guttenberg says he gleaned a bit of both his parents’ characters, describing himself as at once strong and soft spirited. However, it was his mother that taught him perhaps the most important character lesson of all: Be yourself. This is a phrase that Guttenberg has carried with him throughout his life and career, and has truly shaped the person he is today. For Guttenberg, being himself is closely linked to his general happiness. “I’m most happy when I’m around people I love and people who love me. If I’m happy in my heart, then I’m happy anywhere. I just want everyone around me to be comfortable and happy.” In being yourself, or more accurately
being the best self you can be, he believes you’ll have the life you want most. It all comes down to being yourself while also raising your standards: “Raise your standards. If you do, you’ll be around the right people, you’ll get the right jobs, you’ll have the right income, the right life, and you’ll live in the right place.” This optimism is the backbone of Guttenberg’s upraising, as well as his relationships with those around him. If you aren’t around people who respect you, treat you well, and make you happy, how can this possibly lead to a better life? How is that being yourself? Guttenberg is also extremely humble. Despite being a famous actor, his life in New York is fairly modest: his apartment is New York sized (i.e. a closet) and his friends come from all walks of life,

ranging from CEO’s to Dunkin Donuts employees. Indeed, one of his CEO friends taught him an interesting lesson, saying: “‘I don’t hire people for what they can do, I hire them for who they are. Because I can teach you to fly an airplane, I can teach you to fly a spaceship. I can’t teach you to not steal from a register. I can’t teach you not to lie.’” This is an especially unusual concept in today’s work market as it usually seems like an impressive resume and expensive college are the new currency. Another unusual relationship stance is his relationship history with his exes: unlike most people, he remains close friends with his ex-girlfriends. When asked about his first kiss, Guttenberg humorously described his date with a young girl named Jeanie from Plainview. In an effort to impress, Guttenberg had his Dad driving him a few blocks away from the date location, where he then took out his bike from the car and biked the rest of the way. He wanted to make it look like he had impressively and athletically ridden his bike all the way to the date. He later came home and looked at himself in the mirror, concluding that he had become an entirely different person. He is currently dating Emily Smith, reporter for CBS. As he gets older, Guttenberg is getting more and more excited about his career and the new roles now within his reach. While science fiction movies used to be seen as lesser films, today they have made quite the mark in the box office. It’s a rare day when a new Marvel or DC Comics film is not in the works or playing on the big screen. This shift toward sci-fi was very exciting for Guttenberg and he decided to star in the film Lavalantula and its subsequent sequel 2 Lava 2 Lantula! The plot comes down to a simple concept: Fire-breathing spiders that come out of volcanos, with Steve Guttenberg there to save the day. A mix of comedy and action, the film is wonderfully entertaining and fun. In some ways, the film can be seen as a way for him to get back to the feel of his earlier films, that mix of action and comedy combined with a modern twist. 2 Lava 2 Lantula! comes out in August 2016. Having done much theater before his film days, Guttenberg is also looking forward to returning to the stage in future productions. For him, reaching your 50’s means getting to play Lear in Shakespeare’s King Lear, Benedict in Much Ado About Nothing, and Othello in Othello. “At 50, you’re just the right age to take on the heavier roles, while also being youthful enough to inspire into the roles the energy it needs.” When asked about his favorite role so far in both the film and theater productions, Guttenberg’s answer was simple: the next one.
88 | resident.com
Aside from acting, he has many other passions, many of which surprise. An especially surprising one is his passion for gardening (even more so if you consider the fact that he lives in a small New York apartment). But it seems that Guttenberg has quite the green thumb and a large amount of expertise. Dividing a lot of his time between New York and LA, he had different perspectives on gardening for each location: “In LA, I can grow impatients all year round, which are my favorite flowers in the world. The flip side is that when you grow plants in California, it will grow slowly and nicely, but when you grow plants in New York in April and May, they know, we just have to go! By October we have to leave, we have to go go go!” Even Michael Caine seems to be an expert gardener, offering Guttenberg much advice on how best to take care of his plants. If Guttenberg has one piece of advice for how to have the healthiest and most fruitful garden possible, it’s to use Osmocote, a type of plant food that he claims will make your plants go crazy! Guttenberg also has a large interest in the state of the country, both politically and culturally. Already seen to be an optimist, he expressed his belief in the goodness of the American people and the strength of the country as a world leader. Though not necessarily agreeing socially with Donald Trump, he did express his belief in the politician’s ability to help the economy and to lower the costs of New York real estate through an increased number of new homes and apartments. However, no matter the politics, Guttenberg holds fast to America being a great country, “maybe because of its natural resources, maybe its positioning, the shoulders that we stand on, but mostly because of the attitude that people have.” Moving beyond politics, Guttenberg is extremely passionate about the restaurant and fashion scenes in both LA and New York. His favorite designers include Armani, Zara, Zegna, Prada, Hugo Boss, adding that he really likes “anything European.” Listing a large amount of wonderful restaurants in both cities, he especially recommends Atlantic, Acme, Mezzaluna, and Parm in New York and Taste, Kayndaves, Mastro’s, and Spago in LA. His final words were recommendations for books to read this summer, ranging from thrillers to books on real estate: A Wrinkle in Time, Keep Calm, and The New Rules of Real Estate are but a few examples. Steve Guttenberg is a man that goes far beyond the label of actor and seems to constantly surprise, as well as inspire with his wonderful optimism and advice!

DINING OUT AUGUST 2016

“Nothing can be finer than summer dining, when nature reveals its abundance of seasonal fruits, vegetables, and herbs that bring out the vibrancy of local provisions. This month we traveled to a new Brooklyn Heights Hotspot, tasted the fresh flavors of Nantucket and dined on a cruise around the city as well as visited local favorites.”
BLUEFIN, NYC Though no passport is required, taste your way through different iconic port cities around the world this summer through Bluefin’s Summer at Sea series highlighting the cuisines of four cities with a limited run. Starting with Portofino to Nantucket, the next month menu highlights the classic Catalan cuisine of Barcelona and ends with Tokyo. The set menu is priced at $39 and includes a choice of 3 starters, 3 main courses and a dessert. To truly enjoy the international flair try each course with a paired wine handpicked by the sommelier. For the Nantucket series, a contemporary take on favorite Cape Cod dishes included brioche stuffed lobster rolls, Maplewood grilled salmon, and a New England clam bake loaded with flavorful East Coast shellfish such as prawns, scallops and lobster and finished with a scrumptious and summery blueberry crisp. BEASTS & BOTTLES As Brooklyn is quickly becoming a hotbed for New York’s rising culinary talents, Beasts & Bottles is a testament to this trend. Though the only beasts in question are the chicken revolving on the rotisserie, the specialty of the house is prepared in a traditional Provencal artisan style. This latest chic Provencal farmhouse style Brooklyn Heights hotspot was created by the team behind Atrium Dumbo. Executive chef Laurent Kalkotour who was born and raised in Aix en Provence has created a menu that draws upon his previous stints under French Masters such as Alain Ducasse and Daniel Boloud with an extensive charcuterie selection of pates, rillettes and terrines as well as a variety of flavorful rotisserie delights. Other standouts include the roasted bone marrow, Tomahawk ribeye, sweetbread stuffed quail and grilled octopus and pork belly. To enhance the dazzling Provencal cuisine are the selections of wine curated by Master Sommelier Alexander LaPratt, the only Master in Brooklyn who showcases smaller and responsibly made French wines from the Rhone, Champagne and Beaujolais regions. Imbibe THE ROXY LOUNGE at the Roxy Hotel The Roxy hotel is designed to look like the entrance of an old-fashioned movie theater, complete with bright yellow bulbs and even the name of the hotel is written in lights above the entrance like the name of a movie. Inside, there are 2 bars- the Roxy Lounge, found on the first floor, and the Django, on the next floor down. Both have live music and late night service for food and drinks. The Roxy Lounge is perhaps the most dynamic spot as it is popular both during the day and at night. During the sun-lit hours, the lounge has a cafe perfect for guests and businessmen in a cozy atmosphere. At night, the lounge becomes more of a trendy lounge, complete with live jazz, creative and speciality cocktails and mouthwatering food. The walls are brick and reminiscent of an underground music club; the music stage lies against the wall featuring the cursive-scripted Roxy name. In the corners, there are velvet booths looking onto the stage yet still providing intimacy and privacy. In the center, you can find your typical table and chairs, but also armchairs and couches, perfect for a relaxing drink and enjoying the show. For an added twist, the decor also consists of copper art deco ceiling designs, antique lamps, and decorative pitbull sculptures. – Nathalie Barclay Roxyhotelnyc.com
NORTH RIVER FISH BAR A reminder that we actually do live on an island is the 3 story floating Fish Bar at North River Landing, one of New York’s best kept secrets. While the adjacent North River Lobster cruise can be considered the Montauk sister, this 160 ft yacht would be the sophisticated Southampton sister complete with different dining venues such as a bar lounge area on the first floor, a formal dining room on the second floor and an outdoor bar on the top depending on your mood. With 6,000 square feet of bi level interior space with a 3,000 outdoor deck this is one of the best ways to view the city. Every night there are two sailings around the Hudson down to the Statue of Liberty where admission is free and you can enjoy delicious small Mediterranean tapas style dishes and sharable seafood plates along with refreshing farm to bar seasonal cocktails and fine wines. CELEBRATING JULY 4th AT
INDUSTRY KITCHEN
By Hillary Latos
I
f Macy’s is known for anything in the US, it is their Thanksgiving Day Parade and their July 4th celebration that is televised and broadcast throughout the country. This half hour spectacle is truly spectacular on TV but words cannot describe its magnificence when seen in person. One of the best vantages facing one of the barges is from Industry Kitchen in the South Street Seaport. With an unobstructed bird’s eye view of the East River and Brooklyn, the night sky is like a blank canvas lit by an awe inspiring display of lights. Coupled with the scrumptious American fare served at this restaurant waterfront hotspot, this was an event not to be missed and a perfect venue to celebrate America’s 240th Birthday. “4th of July is one of my favorite holidays because of the significance of what Independence day represents, celebrating a unified nation and the heroism of those who protect us from harm’s way,” says Abraham Merchant, CEO, Merchants Hospitality. “In celebration of this, I host an annual fun filled viewing party at Industry Kitchen, which brings the entire community together, families and friends, and visitors from around the world to enjoy the festivities with delicious food, cocktails and the most spectacular view of the fireworks in NYC.” Industry-kitchen.com

Ellen’s Café bid farewell to City Hall in 1987 and moved onto the Great White Way at 1650 Broadway where the neighborhood welcomed its new star: Ellen’s Stardust Diner. Sharing the culture of driveins, Ellen’s is decked with nostalgic memorabilia including vintage photographs of past Miss Subways winners. It’s known for having the country’s most talented wait staff who burst into song at a moment’s notice in between taking orders. Broadway show tunes are intermixed with current pop songs and hits from yesteryear. The restaurant serves up traditional American diner favorites like burgers,
deli-style sandwiches, homemade apple pies and more seven days a week. The restaurant always has a line to get in but is without a doubt worth the wait. Last year Ellen’s Stardust Diner served over 750,000 guests making it one of the world’s busiest diners. Ellen Hart will celebrate her restaurants 30th Anniversary at its Times Square location in 2017 and has big plans, including the launch of a reality series on the restaurant, which will premiere on YouTube this fall. ellenstardustdiner.com

EMPIRE OYSTER By Hillary Latos
CONCOURS DES HUÎTRES For our Resident Event alongside Tourneau and Baume & Mercier, Empire Oyster™ presented a grand selection of the finest oysters from 5 different states/ provinces in the US & Canada. A Concourse des Huîtres, if you will. Huîtres is the French word for Oysters, by the way. Our guests were treated to Empire (NY), Mayflower (MA), Fleur de Sea (NB), Kusshi (BC) and Capital (WA) oysters. Such a selection was an extraordinary pairing with our wine sponsors, Zonin Prosecco, Woodbridge Wines, and A-List Wines, Shelby Cobra & Baume & Mercier, our partners in the fête. “Oysters are luxury seafood and Empire Oyster offers a bespoke oyster service that is at the high end of the culinary spectrum.” says Kevin Joseph, Photo by Kensey Jean | kensejean.com

founder & CEO of Empire Oyster™ “We were honored and thrilled to present in company of such fine automobiles and timepieces.”
SPIRITED PEARLS & ACCOUTREMENT PREMIER™ Each oyster was as well dressed as our guests crowd. But all the oysters wore pearls. Spirited Pearls™, that is. Empire dressed the West Coast Oysters with a Mezcal & Jalipeno Pearl. East Coast Oysters got a Gin & Mint Pearl. These pearls are the creation of Joseph & Chef Rob McCue who has developed a proprietary process of molecular gastronomy whereby spirits are “spherified” for presentation on oysters. McCue explains: “The ‘pearl’ is like a fish egg or grape. It pops in your mouth like caviar releasing its contents in just
the right time and amount to create a perfect pairing.” They are incredible! Also, fresh grated horseradish root was offered on East Coast oysters and fresh grated wasabi root was offered for West Coast Oysters. Again, like nothing we’d ever seen before. But where was the cocktail sauce? “Not on my watch!”, Kevin says. “Friends don’t let friends use cocktail sauce on ultra-premium oysters!”
SHUCK TRUCK™ As pleasing to our eyes as the oysters were to our palates was the presentation of the Empire Oyster Bar itself! In keeping with the automotive theme of the event they brought their “SHUCK TRUCK”. Its a 1967 Chevy Sportsvan 108 Deluxe that is in

the process of a complete restoration as “the world’s fastest raw bar”. “We love to bring The Shuck Truck”, say’s Kevin. “But it’s not a food truck. We use it for private events upon request of the client. Its one of many tools we use to deliver a singular experience.”
MASTER MERMMELIER™ Kevin is a Master Mermmelier™ which is to say that he is to oysters what a Master Sommelier is to wine. The word comes from the term Merroir, which is used to describe the influences on an oyster that result in its size, shape, color and taste, like Terroir, in grapes and wine. “I coined the phrase Mermmelier and tradmarked it.”, states Joseph. “I needed a way to describe what it is I do and how I bring value to all of the constituents to oysters from growers to chefs to consumers. I’m much more than a guro, aficionado or a shucker. I curate, produce and guide people through exceptional oyster experiences. Like a Sommelier does with wine. I grew up in hospitality so my favorite part of what I do is shucking, dressing and serving oysters to guests.” RAISE THE RAW BAR™

That’s the Empire Oyster slogan. And they really do own it. Their product, presentation, process and people are simply exceptional. They’re standard offering and presentation is as good, no, much better than any we’ve experienced in the finest restaurants and raw bars in the world. Empire Oyster is based in NYC. They provide bespoke raw bar services for a discriminating clientele in their homes, on their yachts, at their weddings and at their philanthropic events nationwide. They also offer service, operations and marketing consulting for chefs & restaurants as well as oyster growers & distributors locally and internationally. ZACH ERDEM
RESTAURATEUR TRANSFORMS A HAMPTONS STAPLE INTO A YEAR-ROUND HOTSPOT By Elizabeth Darwen
R
ising restaurateur Zach Erdem has gained considerable attention in the hospitality industry after transforming a seasonal Hamptons dining staple into a year-round hotspot. The dynamic 32-year-old has used his unique design to balance the classic style of the Hamptons with the enticing elements of New York City nightlife to reinvent the Southampton eatery, 75 Main. The ever popular restaurant and lounge has become a favorite among locals, visitors and celebrities alike, attracting Hollywood’s A-Listers and politicians such as Sarah Jessica Parker, LA Reid, Kelly Ripa, Stanley Tucci, Sofia Vergara, Howard Stern, Pierce Brosnan, Barbara Walters, Jodie Foster, Alex Rodriquez and Vice President Joe Biden. Erdem’s esteemed reputation in the restaurant industry was not established overnight. After moving from Turkey to the United States in 2002, Erdem was struggling to make a living and had planned to move back home after just six months. With only sixty dollars in his pocket—which was loaned to him by a friend—Erdem decided to take a quick trip to the Hamptons two days before his scheduled flight. After arriving at the East End, he ordered lunch at the first restaurant he saw—75 Main. Erdem quickly befriended 75 Main’s General Manager, who offered him a bartending position on the spot. Impressed by the Hamptons and its reputation, Erdem ultimately strived to create a name for himself in this elite community. In the years that followed, Erdem traveled all over the country, working in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Miami, gaining insight into the continuously changing restaurant business. Erdem eventually returned to Southampton to manage the popular Nello Summertimes and brought his experience to bear. In 2010, Erdem was finally able to fulfill his dream of taking ownership of 75 Main—a dream that was born over nine years earlier on the beaches of the East End. Using a combination of an expertly crafted menu, sophisticated decor, and post-dinner entertainment, Erdem is taking the already established restaurant to the next level. Erdem collaborated

with well-known and award winning chefs, artists, designers and D.J.’s, revamping 75 Main into one of the Hamptons popular destinations for high-end fare, ambiance and nightlife scene. After his success in the Hamptons, Erdem searched for the perfect location to open a second restaurant. In February 2012, Zach Erdem took his talents down to South Florida and opened 75 Main in Delray Beach, Florida. Drawn to the charming seaside community’s vibrant mix of dining, shopping, and cultural amenities, Erdem found this venue to be as thriving as the original 75 Main. 75 Main Delray has already gained a celebrity following with the likes of actor and comedian Kevin James and retired Hall of Fame basketball player Dennis Rodman. This year, Erdem expended his reach by opening additional restaurants, hotels and clubs in one of the world’s most renowned locations; the new Japanese Fusion restaurant Kozu which boasts the private room and lounge Summer House; Hotel ZE, which is a 5-star boutique hotel with a total of 9 rooms; and the exciting new addition to the Hamptons nightclub scene, AM Southampton. 75 Main Street Southampton, NY 11968 631.283.7575 www.75maingroup.com

One thing that sets Windstar cruises apart from their competitors is their attention to detail and authenticity to every sail to create an intimate connection between their guests and the world around them. For the James Beard Foundation Culinary Collection, food and wine aficionados had an elevated cultural experience of each destination with an opportunity to taste the most delicious and sumptuous local cuisines of each port. The James Beard Foundation culinary tour from Lisbon to Dublin stopped in Saint-Malo, LaRochelle,
and Bordeaux in France; Gijon and El Ferrol in Spain; and finally Porto in Portugal. Seafood from Galicia, sweet port in Porto, cognac in La Rochelle, and world-famous wines in Bordeaux were a few gastronomic stars of the journey. Onboard each sailing, different award winning James Beard chefs shopped the local markets to create a unique dish every night. Additionally Windstar’s master sommelier led wine tasting sessions before dinner highlighting local regional wines from each port such as a Porto flight from Portugal, Tempranillo and Verdejo tasting while sailing in Spain and a cider tasting while in the Asturias region of Spain. One of the highlights was the Insider Series in Bordeaux held at a private Premiere Grand Cru vineyard and chateaux where guests were serenaded by a string quartet while enjoying French gourmet delicacies in a resplendent setting. As the time is limited in each port of call the best way to explore the history while gleaning educational highlights of these storied destinations is to
take a tour led by one of their esteemed guides. Step back in time as you walk the cobblestoned streets of places that represented the battle grounds of wars that shaped history or towns that still represent a sanctuary of religious pilgrimage just as it did centuries past. Depending on your preference towards culinary, historic, or active, there are plenty of tours to suit each taste with an informative debriefing the night before. After a long day of touring, the luxurious and spacious suites are the perfect oasis to relax and recharge. Every room features a spacious walk in closet with a generously sized bathroom including a large marble shower. The upper verandah rooms feature a sumptuous sitting area with a couch and armchairs overlooking a personal balcony that can be curtained off for privacy. The plush beds can be separated into 2 twins or made into a large bed topped with luxurious linens that assure a restful slumber.

For dinner Candles Grill is reservation only and specializes in steak and seafood grilled fare. Some of their specialties include a grilled shrimp cocktail, filet mignon, and a delectable crème brulee. AmphorA is the elegant main dining room with a gourmet menu changes nightly to reflect the regional flavors of the ports of call and offers an extensive variety of delectable appetizers, main courses and decadent desserts. During dinner, a selection of the sommelier’s
chosen wines is complementary with the meal. Or if you prefer to dine in the sanctity of your room, 24 hour room service is always available. During the days at sea take the time to relax and enjoy the onboard amenities. Cool off in their salt water pool or relax in one of their two hydrotherapy whirlpools. To work off the extra calories, there is also a full gym that’s available 24 hours a day and a personal trainer onboard. Relax and rejuvenate in the WindSpa which offers a full menu of services such as luxurious Elemis facials, relaxing Swedish, deep tissue or sports massages and beauty services such as hair styling, and mani/

To truly indulge in the yachting life, take in the view from the elegantly chic Yacht club offering floor to ceiling views of the ocean and environs with a variety of sweet and savory snacks served between meals. Enjoy live music and a breathtaking view from the top deck during their nightly sail away cocktail parties. his island-elegant restaurant, perched in a magical “treehouse” and set within lush tropical gardens overlooking the sea, is a foodie paradise. Its owners, Carrie and Jerry Bogar have poured their heart and soul into every detail of this restaurant, from the ambience to the menu. Veya is a place where chic crowds mingle to sip cool drinks while live music serenades them. Their cuisine, themed around the equatorial “cuisine of the sun,” draws inspiration from culinary traditions of tropical locales around the globe. The Moroccan spiced shrimp “cigars,” are one of their most popular choices, as are the Vietnamese-style crispy calamari. Entrees include grilled jerk-spiced tuna, vanilla-cured duck breast, and local lobster; and for dessert don’t pass on the Coconut Cake with Rum Toffee Sauce. The dining area located on the second-floor veranda welcomes patrons from around the island with cool breezes and beautiful views. The food and service at Veya are upscale and sophisticated but the ambiance the island-casual. veya-axa.com

MONTREAL THE CULTURAL HUB OF CANADA BY JENNIFER PELAEZ
A
s the world’s second largest Frenchspeaking city, Montréal is a captivating blend of old and new, a booming and culturally diverse metropolis with a unique dynamism born from its unique fusion of European and North American culture. Montréal is heralded as Canada’s cultural hub, replete with theater and dance companies, world-class entertainment venues, and a fascinating medley of neighborhoods where artists and musicians have helped form its reputation as a creative and vibrant city. This is most apparent through the city’s more than 100 festivals, making it a must-visit destination with happenings for every interest year-round. As the only Canadian city to have held the Summer Olympics, Montréal has continued to expand its scope of offerings, from music, comedy, to fashion and beyond. It is also a city that is blessed with one of the most exciting food scenes in the country, along with plenty of activities and sightseeing opportunities ranging from photogenic 18th-century facades of Old Montréal, particularly along its oldest street, Rue Saint-Paul, to the glittering shops and restau-
rants of downtown. The architectural grandeur of the city also includes heritage churches such as the awe-inspiring Notre-Dame Basilica as well as the first building in Québec to be classified a historic monument, Château Ramezay. One of the best views from which to appreciate this magical city, aside from the famed Mount Royal, is the newly opened observatory, Au Sommet Place Ville Marie, from where you can take in the stunning 360-degree panoramas of Montréals new skyscrapers mixed with centuries-old architecture set against the St. Lawrence River.
Festival, presented by TD in collaboration with Rio Tinto, is a commemoration of its rich history while bringing together jazz enthusiasts, artists, and tourists from around the globe to share and partake in some of the best performances in North America. This past July, the 37th edition of the festival took over the Quartier de Spectacles, which featured 9 outdoor stages and over 3,000 artists from around the world. With a multitude of venues and two-thirds of the programming free of charge, it is the perfect opportunity to celebrate jazz in all its many forms.
Since the era of Prohibition, and Montréal’s repeal of it in 1919, a steady influx of artists and those seeking a lively nightlife, along with the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway, set the foundation for the development of jazz. Throughout the subsequent decades, Montréal has especially established its credentials on the international scene as a world-class breeding ground for accomplished musicians and has garnered much recognition for being home to the world’s largest jazz festival. It’s most well-known festival, visited by over 2 million people - the Montréal International Jazz
For prime viewing and one of the best locations, the Hyatt Regency Montréal offers a convenient base from which to access all the concerts and activities, literally at your doorstep. THE MONTREAL JAZZ FESTIVAL A MULTITUDE OF VENUES & MUSIC By Barry Bassis
Trumpeter Christian Scott has a hot group but they reached a higher level when they brought on the guest star, Lizz Wright. She has a powerful contralto and sang the opening and closing numbers from her latest Concord album, “Freedom and Surrender” and Neil Young’s “Old Man.” The standout in Scott’s band is his flute player, Elena Pinderhughes. Her brother Samora is the fine pianist in the group.

T
he Festival International de Jazz de Montreal is the largest jazz festival in the world. This year, I attended five of the ten days of the Festival, including indoor and outdoor shows and there were so many world-class artists that it was hard to decide which ones to pick. The events all take place in a concentrated area of downtown Montreal, where there are 15 concert halls and 8 outdoor stages. It must be daunting to open for a popular singer like Gregory Porter, who won the Grammy for best vocal jazz album in 2015, but vocalist Jaime Woods immediately charmed the audience. She was accompanied by her talented brother Daniel on guitar and they had the audience snapping their fingers and singing along. Like Porter, she writes most of her own material. Porter was splendid, singing numbers from each of his albums. An unusually thoughtful songwriter, the title track of his new Blue Note album, “Take me to the Alley,” which he performed at the show, is basically a call to help the “afflicted ones” of our society.
132 | resident.com
Mexican singer Lila Downs is another force of nature vocalist. Addressing the audience, she acknowledged her native country’s problems, but she chose to honor its positive contributions, such as the women who grind corn and make tortillas in the morning. Other pieces were about iguanas, mescal and Emiliano Zapata. Her set had elaborate filmed projections.
Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, appearing at the Symphony Hall, showed why they have been a beloved New York institution for the past 30 years. Marsalis, sitting in the trumpet section at the back, acted as m.c. and, while not stinting on his own solos, also gave other members of the ensemble a chance to shine. The Orchestra played pieces and arrangements by various band members. There were works by Duke Ellington (whom Marsalis cited as the inspiration for the LCO) as well as Thelonious Monk. They also performed “Windows,” a piece by Chick Corea. The next night, I returned to the same hall to see Corea himself in a superb trio with bassist Christian McBride and drummer Brian Blade. The trio again proved the primacy of Ellington and Monk. Corea paid tribute to Miles Davis as well as the late pianist Bud Powell before performing his driving “Tempus Fugit.” In the second half, Corea announced, “I am going to play a tune by one of my favorite composers …me” and played “The Enchantment.” As an encore, the band did “Spain,” Corea’s adaptation of the theme from Rodrigo’s “Concerto for Aranjuez.”
Pianist Kenny Barron and guitarist Lionel Loueke joined for a memorable concert of duets. There was more Monk (including “’Round Midnight”), Wayne Shorter’s “Footsteps” and a Barron original. They ended with the Caribbean favorite, “St. Thomas.” Stacey Kent (a singer in the Peggy Lee mold) presented a sophisticated set with songs in English, French and Portuguese. She feels so comfortable in a samba beat, she opened with a Brazilian flavored “People Will Say We’re in Love.” There were several Jobim songs and more Rodgers and Hammerstein (“Happy Talk”). Her graceful band is led by her husband, saxophonist Jim Tomlinson and Kent occasionally played guitar. Those were just the concerts I attended with admittance fees. There were non-stop free shows and I enjoyed a number of these, especially the Eagle Rock Gospel Singers. A number of events were geared to children, including a show featuring teenage performers and a wonderful performance by Turkish folk dancers in colorful costumes. The Montreal Jazz Festival certainly won me over.

DESTINATION: NANTUCKET
BY Josh Estrin
N
antucket, the charming fifty square mile island located a mere thirty miles off the coast of Cape Cod, lures vacationers every summer with its dune swept ocean beaches, quaint cobblestoned streets and historical cedar-shingled architecture. From the bustling downtown to the serene shores, this island offers a bit of something for everyone.
How to Get There
How to Rent
Getting to Nantucket may be easier than one imagines. The options are simple as there are but two choices; by air or by water. There are daily flights on and off of the island provided by several commercial and local airlines. From the tristate area, JetBlue offers direct flights from JFK to Nantucket. The planes are small, but you will be privy to a bird’s eye view of paradise out of all the windows. For those who prefer the water route, the three most reliable companies offering ferry service to Nantucket are Seastreak from New Bedford, New York City, and New Jersey and Steamship Authority along with Hy-Line departing from Hyannis. Steamship Authority will take you on a relaxing, two-hour scenic route while Hy-Line will get you from dock to dock in approximately one hour. In light of the costly fee to ferry your vehicle over, it is advisable to take advantage of the secure parking lots at the ferry depots. Once you arrive, rental cars and bike are plentiful with taxis, shuttles, and Uber to shuttle you to and from any adventure.
Nantucket is also the perfect summer long destination. If this sounds appealing, renting a home is probably the best option. Use one of the local real estate offices, including Great Point Properties or J. Pepper Frazier, to help plan a longer-term stay. TripAdvisor and WeNeedAVacation.com are also helpful resources
Where to Stay Where you choose to stay will affect your overall experience. Luckily, Nantucket offers an array of hotels and bed and breakfasts to choose from. The largest and oldest hotel on the island, The Nantucket Hotel and Resort, offers a full-service family-friendly experience. Fully equipped with a pool, workout facility, and restaurant, the hotel is just a short walk to the beach, town, and shops. An inviting courtyard is one of the many advantages of 76 Main, a picturesque hotel with a polite and welcoming staff. Make sure to leave time to enjoy a drink out by the fire pit and plush and comfortably furnished patio before strolling into the center of it all for dinner.

Must Sees From world-class restaurants to chic boutiques and captivating seascapes, Nantucket has it all. Spend your day meandering along the cobblestone streets of downtown, perusing handcrafted jewelry at the Blue Beetle and designer styles at Island Company, admiring offbeat treasures in the many unique gift shops and treating oneself to a homemade waffle cone from the heavenly Juice Bar. A must place to raise your class is Cisco Brewers, the island’s unique brewery, distillery, and winery located just fifteen minutes from town. Live music, food trucks, and mouthwatering brews create a carefree, delightful atmosphere with family and pet friendly appeal. Just seconds away from Cisco is Bartlett’s Farm, the island’s oldest and largest family owned farm. The market offers fresh locally grown vegetables, fruits, and flowers, as well as quality meats, cheeses, and ingredients to fill your stomach or take back and stock your pantry. Enjoy a fresh lunch out on the picnic tables or stop by to pick up some tasty snacks before hitting the beach. For famous watercolor worthy sunsets, make sure to plan a visit to Madaket Beach, a longtime favorite of locals and vacationers alike. Next on the itinerary is Millie’s for fresh tacos and Tex-Mex cuisine. Guests can walk in right off the beach or take some food to go and enjoy it from the comfort of a cozy blanket while watching the sun slip behind the dunes.
Every vacation has a unique set of essentials, so make sure these are stowed away in your travel bag or if your staying for the entire summer season place an order big enough to include friends who will surely be stopping by.

JONATHAN BENNETT
By Nathalie Barclay
URBANITE 140 | resident.com
“Your hair looks sexy pushed back,” or so say young women to actor Jonathan Bennett on a a daily basis. Comedy turned cult film, Mean Girls continues to be quoted to its featured actors even ten years after its release. Though there are many quotes to choose from, popular ones being “On Wednesdays we wear pink” and “You can try Sears,” Jonathan Bennett’s character Aaron Samuels is almost inextricably associated with the comment on his hair. And yet, aside from this over-repeated quote, Bennett remains surprisingly humbled and pleased by people’s Mean Girls’ references, stating that he’s “constantly amazed how the film has become a pop culture phenomenon.” This is a fairly unusual attitude, as most actors associated with pop culture films grow tired and irritated by the constant recitations. When asked about the role of the film in shaping his career, Bennett showed a side of himself that people didn’t get a chance to see in the film: his sarcasm. After beginning to answer the question over the importance of the film, claiming that no, it hadn’t really changed anything, he took a pause for a couple of seconds before exploding, a smile in his voice. “Yes of course, it’s Mean Girls! What are you even thinking? Of course it did! People didn’t know who I was until then! I didn’t even know who I was. It’s like asking, ‘How were the Olympics?’. Do you think people knew who you were until the Olympics? You were still trying to figure out whether you could dive.” Born in Ohio, Bennett’s acting career can be traced back to a very young age: “There was never a time that I started acting. I knew when I was three or four that I was going to be an actor.” One of his first performances was as a munchkin in a production
of The Wizard of Oz, Bennett humorously adding how the cowardly lion would get drunk before every performance. After high school, where he acted in as many shows as possible, he moved to New York to join the cast of soap opera All My Children. As it did for many of its cast members, such as Josh Duhamel or Jesse McCartney, the show launched Bennett’s career and after just a few years he made his final move to Los Angeles. In comparing the two cities, he seemed to favor LA over New York: “I love the quality of life a lot more in LA, you can do more for less money. But in New York, you can go and see Broadway shows all the time.” After the 2004 release of Mean Girls, Bennett spent a few years playing the romantic partner to many big actresses, including Amanda Bynes, Hilary Duff, and Haylie Duff. As he got older, his parts began to change, featuring in recent years in many action and adventure films. In Memorial Day, he played alongside Emmy winner and Oscar nominated actor James Cromwell, an experience he describes as a “great honor.” In his 2015 movie Submerged, Bennett enthused over being able to “carry a gun in a suit like a badass” and getting to learn directly from soldiers, even living with them in the barracks. Aside from featuring in films, Bennett has done more and more producing, producing seven films since 2011. Despite these ongoing projects, he admits that producing is not a great passion of his, preferring to be on camera. “I’ll probably do more in the future, but I do find it kind of boring.” With his parents’ deaths in 2012 and 2014, Bennett decided to join the popular dance show, Dancing with the Stars. “With Dancing with the Stars, they call and ask if you want to do it. And you just do it.
You don’t do it because it’s a dance thing. You do it because it’s a fun show and at the time I had just lost both my parents and felt really sad. The show was a way for me to wake up again.” For six weeks, Bennett worked himself to the bone and was very popular with the audience, before eventually being eliminated. Despite feeling upset over the hard work he invested, the experience left him slightly jaded. “Looking back on how they do the show, I would have done things differently. I was thinking that if you could just do well and try hard, you could make it. But now I look back and I realize it’s really a two-part show, half dance and half reality.” Bennett’s most recent project is his role as host of Cake Wars. Though he admits he cannot bake a cake, or bake at all, his inexperience is overshadowed by the fact that he is “just really passionate about cake.” As he notes, “who wouldn’t want to go to work and eat a lot of cake?” Only his love of peanut butter cookies can compete against the joy of working for the show (a fact that he exclaimed enthusiastically). He is very excited about this season’s themes, like Captain America and SpongeBob, as they are perfect for families to spend together every night. “Everyone gets really into it, there’s something for everyone.” Join Jonathan Bennett Monday nights at 9:00 PM EST to see him on Cake Wars and all the show’s wonderful cake drama

BOOKS du JOUR AUGUST 2016 By Frederic Colier
“Happy People Read and Drink Coffee” by Agnès Martin-Lugand. Trans. Sandra Smith (Weinstein Books, p 242, $22.90) Originally self-published in French, this book became a sensation in France before an international bestsellers, and deservedly. Though written in the current fashionable trend of story of awakening or recovery in the face of brutal personal drama, think Under the Tuscan Sun, Wild, and Eat Prey Love, tragedy, this book reads like a charm, in a clear and fast-pace prose. Diane is a young woman, who has lost both her husband and daughter (I’ll spare you how). Despairing, she moves to Ireland to escape the crushing memories surrounding her. There, of course, life slowly creeps back in, and she develops a friendship with Edward, a local photographer. Ghosts however are powerful, especially when Diane and Edward’s relationship evolves. They stand in her way. I love how the book looks at compromises, not between the alive and the dead but in the narrow scope of the grey, which is the daily dance of compromise we face to deal with pain, sorrow and laughter.

“Regrets Only,” by M.J. Pullen (Thomas Dunne Books, p 322, $24.99)
“Don’t Let My Baby Do Rodeo” by Boris Fishman (Harper/Harper Collins, p 336, $26.99)
“A House For Happy Mothers” by Amulya Malladi (Lake Union Publishing, p 329, $14.95)
Following her success with The Marriage Pact (2015) MJ delivers the second installment of her engaging new series about a group of thirty-something in Atlanta. This time, the event takes place several years later. This coming of age story centers on Suzanne Hamilton, a young professional woman who has it all: the great career as an event planner, a rich social life, a trendy condo in the best neighborhood, and men forming a line outside her front door stretching to the street corner. But the story is no caricature. Even though it starts on a high note, things quickly turn sour. After a freak accident, she loses pretty much all of it. This is when the novel kicks into high gear and finds its voice. Because the early thirty is really a time of readjustment. When coveted dreams end up in tattered, the nature of the dreams must be realigned to fresh perspectives. Often things we moan about or leave behind in grief are just step towards way better things.
A sophomore release from Boris Fishman, an author who appeared on “books du Jour, the TV series when he released his first book, “A Replacement Life.” If you forgive me the cliché, the fruit never falls too far from the tree, and you could say that it is true about Don’t Let My Baby Do Rodeo. From Russian-Belarus descent, Boris writes characters as wide as legendary Russian rivers, with the same verve and punchy style. Here we have a couple riding together the deceiving roads of life. The dislocation erupts when they adopt, Max, an eight-year-old boy from Montana, who little by little regresses to a feral state. Not what the couple had bargained for. It is precisely the dislocation that their son brings up that highlight the parent’s own sense of inner dilemma. Who are those Slavic transplants straddling a dual culture and languages, constantly playing a tug of war between belonging here and having the heart at times somewhere else? Perhaps it is this dislocation that will allow the family to survive and for the members to fine-tune how they see life in the future. But first they may have to visit part of themselves, which may not be too be comfortable, just to see who they are inside
Here is another book dealing with a woman, who appears to have it all, except for one thing. In this case it is not a love partner but a child who is missing to complete self- fulfillment. Delivered with mastery by Indian bestseller author, Amulya Malladi, and with engaging characters, A House For Happy Mothers deals with the tough decisions and consequences to have recourse to surrogacy. Priya, one of the main protagonists, a tech guru in Silicon Valley, has been unable to conceive. She joins the “Happy Mothers” in India, where she meets Asha, whose poverty prevents her from sending her gifted child to school. Resigned Asha accept to rent her only asset, her womb, to carry Priya’s child. But the story is not a sentimental celebration about rearing a child or an exposé on the conflict arising when foreign worlds collide with each other in order to help each other. It is also a commentary on the best and the worst of the rising Indian surrogacy industry.
“The Other Daughter” by Lauren Willig (St Martin’s Press, p 310, $15.99) Set in 1920’s Europe, the story follows a modest young woman, Rachel, who discovers that her long dead father is very much alive and kicking. Working in France, and forced to return to England after her mother’s death, Rachel must now clear the house she grew up in. This is when she comes across a society magazine with a picture of her prominent father and his new family. Griefstricken, exacerbated now by a deep sense of betrayal, she sets up to locate him and bring down his lovely charming world. But you may have heard the saying: “if you want to make God laugh have a plan,” and Rachel is not immune to the rule. Things do not go at all according to plan. First she likes her stepsister and then develops a rather strong liking for her fiancé. The clear prose and story clarity make this great page-turner for the fans of deceitful, passionate and revengeful stories a must-read.

THE REAL PRINCESSES OF THE HAMPTONS By Jane Pontarelli
T
his month my loyal readers and animal lovers, I introduce you to, Stella, Keiki and Molly, and yes they are the Princesses of Mecox Beach, Located at the end of Jobs Lane in Bridgehampton. They can be found holding court on the sand. These 3 have their loyal 4 legged friends and humans, and of course their Mom. They jog and swim with their friends and family, yes they do have the life so many of us aspire to. Summertime and there livin’ is easy for these three fur babies. For there is so much to see and so much to do. Each minute of their days are filled with them savoring their magnificent season. But these girls can be found now year round, For these three girls, Stella, Keiki & Molly, are now local princeses for the Hamptons. And yes my dear friends, there is a year round community out East. A few years ago
family and girls decided to live year round and never looked back, for they had found their paradise. When I meet Stella and her 2 legged mother and I instantly feel in love with them for they were riding a motorcycle. Stella was even in my coffee table book, “International Pet Scene”. Stella’s mommy and I became fast friends and enjoy golfing, lunching, and raising money for Pet Charities and Breast Cancer, and other social activities together. We enjoy hot dogs and parties on the beach. The girls can be often found, hanging in the kitchen, with their father as he is preparing a banquet, with vegetables grown from his garden. They are a big help in the kitchen as nothing ever hits the floor. The fur babies mother has always loved animals more than her human counter parts. You can say that she has always felt this way since she was a little girl. Mom explained to me that since she has matured and aged- having animals in her life creates a fullness and purpose and a dimension that makes the aging process all that more palatable, my sentiments exactly. Still to this day, when either of us pass by a road kill or animal laying lifeless, it breaks our hearts and we shriek with pain. Some of us are just natural born animal lovers. But to be truthful, all animal
lovers are people filled with compassion, and selflessness. Combine these two ingredients, and you have a perfect platform for finding love, kindness, and peace. Why do all of us who are animal lovers seem so unselfish and responsible to our four legged buddies who share our lives? So willing to take responsibility for their health, well-being and their particular own aging process? The answer is simple: They make us HAPPY! And, being happy is a state of mind most people would like to achieve. With that in mind, would you rather be a happy person with an animal or cuddle up with your new pocketbook? To us, there is no contest. Here are five simple reasons why animals are way better than people, and why our four legged pals make us happy: 1. They are covered in fur! 2. They can’t talk- and they can’t talk back 3. They are honest with their feelings, nonjudgmental and mindful of life’s every moment 4. They make us feel like we are always #1-even when we know we are not… 5. No matter what the situation, what’s for dinner, or what the weather is like, and including but not limited to: they always acknowledge and mind us- animals love us unconditionally and wholly. If you want to meet the girls they can be found year round jogging on the beach walking the streets of the Hamptons and living the good life.
