THE YEAR THAT WAS 2017
W
hat a year 2017 has been. As Saturn officially transits out of Sagittarius after a 3 year stint, this sets the stage for the coming year and signifies major changes to come. This transit occurs every 28 -29 years dating back to 1989 which marked the fall of the Berlin wall, the fall of the Ayatollah Kohmeni and other life changing events to mark a new era of democracy. It was only befitting that our cover story was Michael Wildes, a powerful immigration lawyer with a stable of high profile celebrity clients who has been continuing his father’s legacy of helping scores of immigrants realize their dreams of citizenship in the land of opportunity. His compelling story is a reminder of the fundamental principles that founded the United States of America, despite the current political climate. We also featured the gorgeous and talented Madchen Amick whom at 46 is at the top of her career with starring roles in the cult revival- Twin Peaks and hit TV show Riverdale. Here Madchen spoke about playing the best roles of her life, working with genius directors of Hollywood and projects on the horizon. With the transition to Winter, our holiday fashion shoot was inspired by the haunting wintry beauty of Scandinavia where dusk meets dawn and mystery unveils. One of the things we look forward to the most after a whirlwind of holiday soirees is winter travel. This month we featured the sunshine of Jamaica and Mexico, the hidden gems of California, and classic capital cities of EuropeLondon, Amsterdam, and Lisbon. As New York City is a dining mecca for foodies, we featured some of the top New York eateries around the city and highlighted Miami’s uber hot culinary scene. As 2017 officially comes to a close and we ring in the New Year, with the realignment of the planets and Saturn’s transit 2018 promises to be a year of expansiveness and growth where honesty and integrity will finally prevail.

SURFACE RISING By Eiman Aziz
R
esident Magazine sat down with internationally acclaimed artist Jeffrey Terreson at his gallery in Beacon, New York. Terreson’s stunning artwork can be found around the world in leading corporate art collections, including NBC, Mobil Oil, and the United Nations to private collectors such as Ralph Lauren. In this interview with Eiman Aziz, Executive Director of Art Beyond Advisory and curator of Terreson’s recent show at the Bedford Historical Hall, Terreson immerses us in his love of texture, dimension, and a driving belief that there’s always more going on in life…both above and below the surface. EIMAN AZIZ: Congratulations on your 5th successful Biennial Art Exhibition at The Bedford Historical Hall. My most immediate observation of your work is that your beautiful art rises from the surface of the canvas. Tell me about that. JEFFREY TERRESON: For me, there have always been other dimensions apart from what you can put down with a brush. I use oils in a way that allows me to come off the surface. This came about as I was working on the bodies of horses in my paintings. I would start building up the textures on their backs. And when you begin to explore this imagery you realize that’s the painting. The horse is not the painting.
EA: Even your pure paint pieces have incredible texture. JT: As I was painting against the wall, whatever fell on the floor, I’d look down and say, “Oh, I have to save my scrapings.” This expanded into even more texture and mixed media.
EA: It must take enormous emotion and commitment to create at such a strong pace. JT: With the work I do is, there’s an authenticity to it that keeps you moving forward. Today, I was dancing while painting.
EA: So, are you open to using any found objects in your approach? JT: If inspired and deemed appropriate, yes. I don’t use things superficially just to be different. I would use it if I felt it had purpose.
EA: Really! To what song? JT: Oh, I was dancing to my artwork. [laughs] Well, my dances can always be seen at the gallery, they’re on the wall! Each of my paintings has their own song.
EA: How about old jeans? JT: Well, I haven’t yet. But I do have plenty of them. [laughter] EA: You have a wonderful studio and gallery space here in the Hudson Valley. With worldwide visitors, what’s one of your most memorable experiences? JT: I’ve had several, and they’ve all been highly emotional. When you see people interact with and be moved by my art…it’s incredibly powerful. In one case, a 78-year-old painter from Spain visited. He said, “I have never seen such beautiful work in my life.” He began crying. We both sat down together and it struck me for days.
EA: What new dimensions does the future hold for you? JT: I will be exhibiting at The China National Museum of Contemporary Art and Shenzhen Art Museum. I’m also excited to incorporate large-scale pieces of artwork. EA: Chagall said that some of the most beautiful relationships throughout his life were with his art. Do you have a relationship with each painting? JT: Very much so. Art has been my longest relationship. Love and hate. But in the last 20 years – just madly in love with each other. You have to allow true emotion to naturally rise to the surface that you’re creating on. And in my case, I suppose, allow it to rise even beyond the surface.

Hope for Depression Research Foundation By Joe Alexander
Hope Parfum tyle icon and depression advocate Audrey Gruss has launched hope – “the uplifting fragrance,” at Saks Fifth Avenue just in time for the holidays. This critically acclaimed collection consists of an Eau de Parfum Vaporisateur Spray; an Eau de Parfum Purse Spray; a Hand and Body Crème and a heavenly scented candle. This elegant collection is also available online at www.saks.com. Thanks to Gruss, this trend setting fragrance will give 100% of its net profits to the Hope for Depression Research Foundation to fund much needed research for new drugs and treatments to fight depression. “This glorious fragrance stands on its own, but the charitable message empowers you to give back with a product that keeps on giving,” said Gruss.
S
Lorraine Bracco & High Society at Saks Candace Bushnell, Lorraine Bracco and Hilary Geary Ross led the perfumed pack to the holiday lunch that Audrey Gruss and Marc Metrick, the President of Saks Fifth Avenue co-hosted at Café SFA to introduce hope parfum. The fragrance was created in collaboration with Firmenich’s master perfumer Honorine Blanc, while the chic packaging was designed by award winning designer Marc Rosen. Karen LeFrak, Jamee Gregory, Hilary Geary Ross, and Dayssi Kanavos gathered at tables festooned with lily of the valley, jasmine, gardenia and tuberose, the blooms that are used in the perfume. “My mother, whose name was Hope, suffered from depression but loved white flowers and surrounded herself with them. She loved the pure and delicate essences and the sense of joy they brought her. I was inspired by her memory to create this fragrance, just as I was inspired 11-years ago to start the Hope for Depression Research Foundation,” said

MARCEL AMES
X of Pentacles CEO Marcel Ames
X of Pentacles By Carlos Lacayo
A Fashion Brand is Born reaking into fashion was always top of mind for designer Marcel Ames who hails from Virginia. Fashion wasn’t Ames first choice, he originally enrolled in the police academy and was looking forward to serving his community. Fate intervened and during his training Marcel suffered a concussion. This setback and the death of his father made him determined to pursue his original dream in fashion. “During my time at the academy, they told me to ‘be ready for anything; They instilled the idea that anything can be thrown at you and that I needed to stay on my toes,” said Ames. During his recovery Marcel studied graphic design and taught himself basic sewing techniques. On a whim, he visited a tarot card reader who said that he should “pay attention to the ten of pentacles card, as it will mean something to you.” This pivotal moment spawned the creation of his critically acclaimed fashion brand X of Pentacles.
B
Minotaur’s Labyrinth Just in time for the holidays Marcel has launched his third collection. The line features ties, pocket squares and scarves, made of the highest quality silk and wool blends. The collection draws inspiration from Greek Mythology, Art Deco and Indigenous Art. You can see these influences in styles such as the Minotaur’s Labyrinth, Norse Serpent and King Neptune pocket squares. Limited quantities make the brand highly collectable and the buyer stand out. “X of Pentacles offers hand-crafted items that are produced in limited editions, for example, I only made 12 of the Aussie Bush print scarves. Once the design has sold out, I move onto the next thing and you would be hard pressed to find another person wearing the same scarf as you.” The pocket squares can be worn traditionally with sport coats or as neckerchiefs, a trend X of

Pentacles has kick started The Pentacle “My inspiration and driving force is the logo,” said Marcel. “Everything starts with this visual. The circle represents vision of thought, the triangle symbolizes the desire and passion, the crescent represents the physical work and fluidity and the square, or Earth, illustrates the finished product.” The Virginia Heritage Series Marcel’s original collection, The Virginia Heritage Series continues to sell out with each new edition. The designer took his inspiration from his home state, “The scenery was my inspiration, the
historical landmarks and things that represent the richness of culture in Virginia. I challenged myself to implement those things sartorially.” Some of the most popular designs include Colonial Cannon Blast, The Rotunda and Night Train. Marcel is now rolling out a made-to-measure program that uses Neapolitan tailoring. “Accessories were my first-love and I’ll always in cooperate them into every collection but now I want to offer curated pieces for every gentleman’s wardrobe,” adding tailored clothing into Marcel’s sophisticated lifestyle brand completes the circle for X of Pentacles.

ISABELLE BSCHER GALERIE GMURZYNSKA
By Joe Alexander
Art Basel ussian avant-garde Galerie Gmurzynska, known for its museum quality and uniquely curated exhibitions, has hosted over 150 shows in its various premises and published over 100 art historical catalogues and catalogue raisonné in close collaboration with experts worldwide.
R
Jean Pigozzi, The Undisputed King of the Celebrity Selfie Glamorous gallerist Isabelle Bscher will be orchestrating her family’s booth at Miami’s Art Basel from (the private day starts December 6th) December 7th to 10th, where she will also host a party for artists and collectors during the fair on December 6th with the photographer Jean Pigozzi. Bscher is planning something special at her Galerie Gmurzynska saying “We always try to surprise people, to do something different, something interesting.” This year Galerie Gmurzynska will present Jean Pigozzi’s new dog series, Charles and Saatchi, at Art Basel. This is the second show that Isabelle has done with Pigozzi and they are set to publish a book about the series together with Damiani and a text written by Charles Saatchi. The new photo exhibition dedicated to the pups will be complemented by master works from Yves Klein, Roberto Matta, Robert Indiana and Joan Miro. Highlighted works at the booth include Yves Klein IKB 240 from 1995, Fernand Leger’s Composition à la feuille from 1931 and Miro’s Femme aux 3 cheveux, constellation from 1976. Isabelle always melds modern works with new ones at Basel to create a more dynamic booth. Woman-owned art world powerhouse Bscher, an art historian with a master’s degree from Sotheby’s, is the third generation to run the gallery, taking over from her mother and her grandmother, who founded it in 1965. The family built it into an art world powerhouse, representing Picasso, Donald Judd, Robert Indiana and James Turrell, as well as architects Zaha Hadid

and Richard Meier, actor/painter Sylvester Stallone, and designer/photographer Karl Lagerfeld. Art Expo Chicago Isabelle showed the work of her friend Christo at the Galerie Gmurzynska booth during the recent EXPO Chicago art fair where she also presented rare pieces by Joan Miró and Fernand Léger. These artists were each selected because they each have a strong connection to the Windy City. Miró had to struggle to find the funding to erect his now-iconic sculpture, “Miró’s Chicago” in the Loop back in 1981. A 1931 Léger piece that Bscher showed is significant because that year marked the artist’s first trip to America, including Chicago. “And Christo famously wrapped Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art in 1969.
A sensory experience Antonio Monfreda, who has created exhibitions for Valentino and Fendi, and was creative consultant for the Metropolitan Museum’s AngloMania exhibit, designed Galerie Gmurzynska’s Chicago booth. “He thinks looking at art is something very intimate, so he wanted to create something that involves all senses,” says Bscher. He created curtains using special fabrics, with custom scents from Santa Maria Novella for a fully sensory experience with the master works. Future exhibitions Upcoming at the gallery’s four locations in Switzerland are exhibits on Alexander Rodchenko and Roberto Matta, and one on photographer Wayne Maser. gmurzynska.com

M
ichael J. Wildes, Managing Partner at Wildes & Weinberg is an adjunct professor at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in New York and teaches Business Immigration Law. He is a former federal prosecutor with the United States Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn (19891993). Michael Wildes is a frequent participant on professional panels and commentator on network television and radio with regard to corporate immigration law, employer sanction work and compliance. Some of Michael Wildes recent clients include First Lady Melania Trump, famed artists Sarah Brightman, Lionel Richie, Boy George, many of the former Miss Universes’ as well as soccer icon Pele, and Master Chef Jean Georges. He was also the mayor of Mayor of Englewood, New Jersey– where he resides. Your dad Leon established this boutique law firm in 1960, he’s well known for his successful representation of John Lennon’s widely publicized deportation proceeding. Tell us about when your dad started the firm and where you have taken it today? Dad started the firm in 1958 before he and my mother started me in 1964. I wasn’t all of 10 years old when I started going to the practice with my father, which was located in the same office building where we’re still paying rent and about to negotiate a new 15-year lease at 515 Madison Avenue, 53rd Street. The deal with my father was very simple. He would wake me up on a Sunday morning and ask, “Did you have plans today?” If I said no, he would suggest, “Well why don’t you come with
me to the office.” My job was to cut scrap paper from 8:30 in the morning until 5:30 in the evening. If I was lucky, my mother would make us some kosher sandwiches, and wrap them in tin foil and my dad and I would walk to the waterfall down the block. We would sit there, and it seemed as though it would take us a week and a half to open the sandwiches given the heavy-duty layers of foil she used. I enjoyed that time. Just dad and me. If I was a good boy, when I got home at night, he awarded me a big beautiful law book. I worked hard to fill my empty bookshelves. As the years passed, I continued to develop a love and a reverence for my father who was not just a scholar in the field, but also my best friend to the extent that I never wanted to go out of town for college. I attended Queens College and during my four years there, I went to class two days a week and worked in the office the other three days. Dad started this robust practice and it was all based on his scholarship, his love, and his personal character. You could never tell if he was talking to a rock star, a member of the Beatles or a housekeeper. He remained the same even keeled man when he was dealing with his children as he was when dealing with clients and people in the community. I have had the good fortune to fill deep shoes and am contemplating the next generation. I met my wife in my dad’s class where he taught at Cardozo Law School for 33 years, and where I am now teaching for the past seven years. Two of my four children are in my class now, so my wife Amy and I can say that we have “Immigration in our DNA”. It has been a
real privilege. You teach, you’re a former mayor, and federal prosecutor with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn. In my world, I would call you a renaissance man. Tell us more about what you do. I realized early on in life when I walked the beat through the 112 Police Precinct in Forest Hills that I would be judged by what I did, not what I said. I remember the first time I sat with a police officer on my very first tour of duty and half of my equipment fell off my belt because I hadn’t fastened it properly. I realized then that I had a lot more to learn. He taught me the powers of observation, lessons in life, and that it was so important to lead by example. Both for my children and my clients I make sure that I’m sincere and have their plight in mind. Most lawyers look at cases as if they’re files and I view them as a journey that I have the privilege of being asked to join. It’s just an extraordinary experience to witness generations of contacts that my father generated. We have the capacity to continue this legacy with my children. Immigration law requires sensitivity. You’re helping somebody get to point A to point B in the most humane way possible. Please elaborate. The shelf life of an immigration case can be weeks, months, or decades. I realized early on it was a better calling in life to be associated with somebody’s challenge. We step into the stead of our clients as if it’s our own journey and I think in many ways my upbringing as an observant Jew has taught me

to appreciate the biblical people of the passport. There’s a vulnerability that people feel and if I can affect some measure of comfort along the process they will never forget this, and they will send their friends and their relatives to us. We have generations of great grandparents and great grandchildren that we have obtained visas, green cards, and even citizenship for. How have the laws changed with immigration over the past 30 years- for the better or worse? Our immigration laws are broken and frozen in time. The last time we had a meaningful change was during the Reagan Administration. President Reagan awarded green cards to three million people in 1986 provided they could prove that they entered the United States illegally before 1982. He had the presence of mind to understand that you could not have a society of people living in the shadows and that these souls could contribute exponentially more to our Treasury. Since then, Congress has effectively put “band aids” on our immigration laws. Immigration is one of the strongest tools we have in our arsenal to make sure that we can globally compete. We have a robust foreign student body that we provide visas to; we educate foreign students

here, but we shoot ourselves in the foot when we don’t create an opportunity for them to onboard into our workforce. In fact, we end up having to compete against them when they return to their home country! It doesn’t seem that we are working seamlessly nor are we effectively protecting our Homeland. With over 11 million people within our border it appears the Administration is trying to cater to political promise rather than looking to really cure the problem. What is the message you are trying to portray in your upcoming book? Human asset intelligence and the great experiment in democracy requires us to think out of the box. And not to put everybody into one category and feel threatened. I believe in my heart that the stories told in this book were ones that our founding fathers would envision. They cared as much to protect our nation and homeland as well as the entrepreneurial spirit that immigrants brought to our shores. We fought pirates in the high seas in the 1700s and our immigration laws now should be rock solid. Our modern-day terrorists should not scare us from doing what is right. My work focuses on a series of cases that will inspire many as they set forth on
their journeys into our shores. Many people are curious as to the kinds of provocative cases I have gotten involved in as I have flown around the world to help individuals working in sensitive posts seeking America as a safe haven. Who are some of your high-profile clients In recent time we have worked with Melania Trump, Sinead O’Connor, Lionel Richie, Chef Jean Georges Vongerichten, race car drivers, scores of scholars, and stylists. Our firm has attracted people with great substance in the arts and entertainment to people with real life threating challenges as well as ambassadors, defectors, etc. What sets your boutique firm apart from the other law firms that handle immigration law? We are results oriented and transparent to our clients. We act under the canons and ethics of our profession and work on a financial basis to what our clients can afford. We bill by the project and always make ourselves available. I assign three people to each case so that redundancies are in place. Was there ever a case that you wanted to win that you

said to yourself this one is going to be almost next to impossible? Mohammad Al-Khilewi, the first Secretary to the Saudi Mission to the UN, came in to see us in 1994. I had just joined my father’s practice as a lawyer. He was trained to be a spy in the Saudi diplomatic corps and when he came to the United States he was asked to do all sorts of tasks that made him uncomfortable. He spent many months zeroxing over 14,000 documents to prove his point alleging that Saudi Arabia was supporting terrorists, conducting surveillance of Jewish organizations, funding nuclear programs with the Chinese, and supporting Hamas. As Jews we were shocked and wanted to give him every minute of our time. He called me ‘brother’ because we were biblical brothers and became very close. His defection was one of the highest profile cases that our office handled and proved that our great Saudi friends were capable of human rights atrocities. Barbara Walters did several profiles on her program 20/20. We helped him to secure asylum, a green card, and ultimately U.S. citizenship. He is a testament to the kind of journey and a diamond in the rough that America is and proved that our shores are available to those that did heroic things. The other case was Kwame James who was a 6’8” young African American male basketball players who was sleeping on American Airlines Flight 63 when Richard Reid started to ignite his shoes in an attempt to blow up the plane. Seeing how tall he was, the stewardess immediately shook him and woke him up so that he could restrain this terrorist while two F16 fighter jets helped the plane safely land. After great effort, he was awarded his green card and remains a hero who saved lives and millions of dollars. We have helped scores of others defect and on one occasion even had Homeland Security stop an airplane to protect a client. To get more of these types of stories…. read my book!
and I replied, “Why sweetheart?” She responded, “You can’t run for mayor if you don’t have any shoes on and maybe you will spend a little more time with us.” That was it for me. It was the knife that tore right into me. It was time for me to concentrate on my practice and my family, so I got out and left with a good name. Although you have many years ahead of you, how would you want to be remembered in business. As someone who rolled up his sleeves and worked until the job got done. It is so important to get things right and to be transparent and honest in the process. America’s golden doors were opened by people who had the same ethic. I owe it to my grandparents who survived the Holocaust, whose certificates of citizenship adorn my wall, to make sure that I keep that door hinged for the next generation.
Favorite Restaurant in New York City? I like my wife’s home cooking! But if I go out to eat, it’s typically Tuna Tartar, Sushi or Branzino! What was your favourite movie? Roman Holiday. Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn. I have a signed poster in my home. I’m an “Old school kind of guy.” In one word, how would you describe your life and where you are today in it? “Grateful.” I was born to extraordinary parents. What my father had in scholarship and character, my mom had in love and I greatly miss her deep blue eyes for the past 22 years. When I look into the mirror I see her. And with her in my rear-view mirror, I endeavor to raise my children with the same legacy.

Tell us about your family life. I have a wonderful wife, Amy, that I met in my father’s law class. She is younger and more stunning than when I first met her, and we have four beautiful children. Two are studying to be lawyers, one is married, the other will be married soon, my other daughters are graduating from college and high school this year. I have been an EMT for the past 24 years and a mayor and city councilman for 11 years. I was “uncle daddy” for the better part of my kid’s early years. I was the guy that would come home and change his shirt, go to an evening job, be called out in the middle of the night if there was a shooting or a fire. One day my youngest, came to me and said, “Daddy take off your shoes”

MÄDCHEN AMICK A CULT CLASSIC By HILLARY LATOS
44 | resident.com
T
hose of us who were old enough to remember David Lynch’s groundbreaking hit series Twin Peaks from the early 90s may have remembered the vulnerable Shelly Johnson who was thoughtfully portrayed by Mädchen Amick in her breakout role. Thirty years later she stars again in the hit revival of this cult classic that has left its indelible mark in the history of filmmaking. This talented and blessed actress has been steadily working her way in Hollywood and at 46 is at the top of her game. Here Madchen opens up on what it’s like to star in two of the year’s most popular cult classics- Twin Peaks and Riverdale.
What are some of the current projects you’re working on? I just finished Twin Peaks and that was such a mind blowing experience to return to that world and work with David Lynch and Mark Frost again. It was really magical and I was so excited to finally see all the parts finally air on Showtime and see the fans’ reactions to it. Of course everyone wants to see a follow up season. And I would totally be up for that if David and Mark want to continue. As far as Riverdale, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I went in and met with Roberto AguirreSacasa to put the pilot together. I thought it was an interesting concept to bring the Archie characters to life. But we’ve seen in the past that it can go horribly wrong. So at first I was skeptical but I really loved Roberto’s ideas and how to bring them to life and keep them current and modern. Alice Cooper was inspired by Annette Bening’s character in American Beauty and I thought it was a great opportunity to portray a character that is trying so hard to keep everything so perfectly together but was secretly crumbling inside. I was immediately intrigued and excited by it. I’m still filming through the end of March. How did you keep these two characters separate while filming Twin Peaks and Riverdale? The characters of Shelly Johnson and Alice Cooper are polar opposites as moms and their approach to raising a daughter though they are both flawed and try hard. Shelly is very careful about how she parents her daughter and doesn’t want her to make the same mistakes she made so she tolerates a lot more and has a soft side to Becky’s circumstances in an abusive relationship. And then you have Alice on the other side who is just a bull in a china shop and doesn’t consider any consequences about protecting her daughter and keeping her out of harm’s way. Though both shows are of a similar genre with a murder mystery that gets to know the town’s secrets, they both have different tones and speed. Riverdale is very fast paced and quick witted while with Twin Peaks the whole world has slowed down to a much lower rotation around the sun. Were you surprised when they brought Twin Peaks back? Definitely, I had heard rumors around it and was secretly hoping and wishing for a revival for years. I thought how can you bring Twin Peaks back and have it on network TV, we barely got away with it the first time. It wasn’t until David & Mark

announced it would air on Showtime and then it all made sense. Let David Lynch make Twin Peaks the way it was in his mind and that’s how you can continue the story and have it evolve. It was surreal and it’s hard to even fathom that it happened. How do you think Twin Peaks has evolved for a new generation? I think it got a lot bigger. The original story was involved in a small perfect town and you got to see the underbelly of the town and the way it evolved into a global story, which was how they were able to return to it. It just grew and it’s almost like a reflection of our fan base. Over the years it’s become such a cult classic and the art world is inspired by it. USC Film School even has a college course just on Twin Peaks itself. What do you feel has made Twin Peaks such a cult classic? Starting my career with Twin Peaks I got to see a masterpiece at work and I didn’t realize it until I went out and had a 30 year career. I constantly reflected back on that experience and apply what I learned to my body of work. What became really clear to me over the years was that to make a successful show requires whomever is at the helm to have a true vision and stick to that vision even though they are being pulled in so many different
directions with different voices. You also have to sprinkle in a little bit of genius at the same time to make a true cult classic.
me it just doesn’t come out of me. I just don’t have the natural talent for it. I passed the genes along, that was my contribution.
What was it like to work with David Lynch again 20 years later? That’s a big question. David is almost simplistic even though his artwork is very complicated. As a human being he’s just very truthful and present. He’s a very kind hearted person and he really loves and cares about the people he works with and collaborates with. He’s incredibly respectful so everyone on the set is revered and has a creative collaborative voice and he’s very present. You’re part of a master plan and you don’t necessarily understand but you are an integral part to that being.
If there was a dream project you could be involved with what would it be? At the moment I’m obsessing over Mind Hunter on Netflix by the master David Fincher. I would absolutely love to be involved with a project he does. I’m also a huge fan of the Coen Brothers and that would be a dream come true to work with them. I’m also a huge fan of Quentin Tarantino. I have a mix of filmmakers that I love and find extremely talented.
Did Twin Peaks end in a way you were happy with? I think it was fulfilling yet left us hanging and wanting more, which is so classic David Lynch. Your family is heavily involved in the music industry, would you ever consider that path? My father was a musician who had a band so I grew up on the road. I’ve been around music my entire life and I absolutely love it. It’s in my DNA. My husband is a singer/songwriter and I have two kids that are writers and performers- it’s all around
How would you describe your personal style? Quirky, bohemian, comfortable. I think I pretty much fit into all of the different bohemian cities we’ve lived in like Hawaii, Santa Barbara, LA, New York, and San Francisco. Combat boots, jeans and a hat is very comfortable to me. I’m so thankful to be 46 years old and have worked in the business for 30 years. Not only being blessed to act on iconic shows and cult classics, but stepping behind the camera and taking control myself as a filmmaker from the ground up is a new chapter and very exciting to me, so keep your eyes open!

DEMARCHELIER THE ART OF FRENCH CUISINE By Elizabeth Darwen
N
ot only is French born Eric Demarchelier a well-known painter, but he is also the owner of one of the most iconic Upper East Side restaurants, authentic French Bistro Demarchelier’s, celebrating its 25 year anniversary this 2017. Talent runs in the Demarchelier family. Brother Patrick Demarchelier is a world renown fashion photographer while Eric Demarchelier has received acclaim as a painter. Eric’s artistic style encompasses figurative, geometric abstraction and abstract expressionism, as well as landscape and portrait painting. Born and raised in Normandy, French restaurant owner Eric Demarchelier has lived in New York since 1977, the
same year he opened the very first location of his eponymous restaurant. After closing the original location on Lexington Avenue, Demarchelier re-opened the restaurant in 1992 on 86th street and his regular customers followed. The restaurant boasts a colorful and cozy environment, with artwork by Eric Demarchelier himself on the walls. He began painting in the 1990s and has been rotating the art exhibited in the restaurant every year since then. Apart from the rotating artwork, Demarchelier has remained consistent throughout the years, both in terms of ambiance and menu, though part of the responsibility of running the restaurant has been pledged to his
daughter Emily Demarchelier. More bourgeois than bohemian, Demarchelier’s cheerfully noisy, cozy quarters are home to a menu of mainly familiar hits from French bistro fare, like standout French onion soup and briny moules mariniere au vin blanc, in a cream-enriched broth. Main courses also hew to the classics; duck confit is served over a hearty mix of tomato- and tarragon-scented flageolets. For pure French luxe, sample the Sole Meuniere. Flour-dredged and pan-fried in butter, this tender fillet is accompanied by a grilled lemon half and fat wedges of boiled potato, tossed in plenty of butter and chives. demarchelierrestaurant.com

‘ DINING OUT By Tash Bazika
Tis the season when the city transforms into a winter wonderland with festive lights abound throughout giving us just another reason to explore the city’s great culinary scene. Here are some of our favorite picks for December from theater bistro dining to a power steakhouse, to the exotic flavors of India and Armenia, and a chic farm to table spot in Harlem.
NIRVANA nirvanany.com Nirvana Lives! For nearly a decade, Nirvana has been a reliable destination in Murray Hill and now owner Anil Amin introduces Michelin-starred Indian chef Peter Beck to bring Nirvana to the next level. Diners will warm their souls with authentic Indian cooking, perfect for the cold season. The menu is divided into starters, tandoori small plates, poultry dishes, lamb/goat dishes, seafood, tandoor grilled specialties, vegetables, rice and tandoori baked bread. To start, guests can choose from an array of items such as tandoori paneer tikka, with paneer chunks marinated in Tandoori Masala, Lamb Potato Croquettes, Tawa Scallops and Shrimp Tadka sautéed in white wine and garlic. As for the main course, there is a little something for everyone like the Ajwain Shrimp, Chilean Sea Bass rubbed with cumin, coriander and pepper, Crab Masala and Goat Curry on the bone. The extensive selection of vegetarian dishes is becoming ever so popular, and Chef Beck works wonders with vegetables, and delivering layers of spice in dishes such as Srinagri Bhaji, a blend of greens, spinach, sorrel, dill, eggplant and taro. The breads on offer include Peshwari Naan, which is a sweet bread stuffed with nuts and raisins, Garlic Naan, Cheese ‘N’ Tomato Naan, Onion Kulcha, Roti and Keema Naan, all house made. While guests indulge in heavenly Indian dishes, the bi-level serene space offers an inviting and warm space. The exposed red brick walls and upholstery reiterates the authentic element, which compliments the dishes perfectly. The bar on the bottom level seats 14 and is the ideal spot for a cocktail and a bite from the bar menu, while the lounge area has additional tables for enjoying drinks and small plates. For a truly authentic Indian experience, Nirvana is the cultivated establishment that delivers.
DB BISTRO dbbistro.com
Acclaimed restaurateur and Chef Daniel Boulud continue to astound diners with his more casual contemporary French db Bistro, ideally located in the heart of the Theatre District, making it the perfect spot for pre or post theatre dining. Upon arrival guests are greeted with sophistication and style, with classic elegant upholstery and light fixtures. The three rooms are connected together railroad style and each comes with defining characteristics, immersing the diners into a new setting. The wood paneled front room has a large communal table and fixed banquets, with exposed bare wood tables, while the next area offers a cozy setting with a handful of booths and beyond that, the more fine dining side is revealed in all its white linen glory and elegant setting. The menu features updated bistro classics, with a modern twist and market-driven French-American cuisine, alongside traditional French specialties and seasonal dishes showcasing the Greenmarket’s finest produce. Guests can choose from a prix-fixe menu, which includes three courses with choices like chicory salad, sweet potato gnocchi, escargot, and the original DB Burger and steak frites. The Dinner a La Carte options include a lobster salad with chicory, Rhode Island greening apple salsify and caviar or the filet mignon with sweet potato gratin and creamy spinach sauce au poivre is a crowd favorite. The Wine Cellar at db Bistro Moderne represents the bounty and terroir of regional France, with a focus on classic wines often seen in a bistro setting.

CLAY claynyc.com In the sleek space that was once Harlem’s historic Perk’s jazz nightclub has now been transformed into Clay- a chic American farm to table restaurant and natural wine bar. This project of love was brought to life by long term Harlem residents, Executive Chef Gustavo Lopez, Wine Director Gabriela Davogustto, and Bar Director Andrea Needell Matteliano. This elegant and airy eatery feels more downtown than uptown and pays homage to the rich history of the Harlem yet also represents the vibrant transformation of the neighborhood’s culinary scene. With previous stints at Lupa, Terroir, and DBGB Executive Chef Lopez has mastered the art of farm to table cuisine and artistic plating. Start the meal with the delicate maitake and trumpet mushroom chips emulsified with tapioca powder, American Wagyu Tartare with pickled shallot, celery root, and cured egg yolk, or the rich flavors of Chicken Liver with preserved fig and toast. The delicious house made pastas showcase the bounty of the fall season. The light Gnocchi is delicately fried with butternut squash, hazelnut, mushrooms and pickled fresno; Garganelli is tossed with crumbled housemade pork sausage and kale; and Bucatini is enhanced with lobster, bottarga, Calabrian chile and breadcrumbs. Standouts from the mains include Pork Tenderloin with apple mostarda, potato and charred romaine, and American Wagyu Strip Steak with soubise, yuzu, hen of the woods and chimicurri. A perfect complement to Chef Lopez’s culinary masterpieces is the curated natural wines on offer that have been sourced from around the world including the Canary Islands, Spain, France, Italy, Germany and South Africa to name a few. The modern and neutral atmosphere awash in a palette of greys and whites and designed by Roberto Sosa is as soothing to the soul as the cuisine is pleasing to the palette. By Hillary Latos

BYBLOS Miami’s Latest Middle Eastern Hotspot By Tash Bazika
B
yblos brings the exciting flavors of the Eastern Mediterranean to diners in a progressively designed space. The marriage of Middle Eastern cuisine with Mediterranean flavors married traditional and local ingredients to bring a whole new experience to the heart of South Beach Florida. Chef Stu originally planned to make Byblos a creative seafood concept in a brick and beam basement in downtown Toronto, but when he began researching ideas for the menu he was reminded of what he loved about cooking: experimenting with flavors form different cultures and cooking without boundaries. The dishes are adaptations of traditional Middle Eastern recipes, inspired by his cooking experience in Melbourne. With a menu based on many cultures and cuisines from all over the world it was fitting to ensure a setting that would evoke a cultural element.

Guests are brought in by the splashy bright array of ocean blues and mustard yellows mixed in with tasteful patterns in a spacious 240 seat setting, with two private rooms for groups, a lounge and upstairs dining room and outdoor dining area perfect for the Florida sunset afternoons. To share, opt in for the prime tenderloin with cauliflower hummus, amlou dressing and veal jus or the roasted lamb shoulder for two is the perfect heart warmer. FERRIS SIMPLICITY AT ITS FINEST By Jeanine Zelkas
T
hose who follow a set of illuminated steps down to the entrance of Ferris in the Made Hotel - or take an elevator ride directly from the stunning rooftop bar - are in for a treat at this newly opened subterranean dining spot. A small low-ceilinged dining room seems spacious and airy, thanks to its light wood decor and open kitchen concept; and accommodates up to 40 guests at cozy tables with cushioned seating, lovely butcher block communal tables, or the chef’s counter where diners have front row seats and the best view of the kitchen. Chef Greg Proechel, formerly of Eleven Madison Park, Blanca, and most recently, Le Turtle, is a refined and thoughtful chef with a sharp talent for knowing how to combine flavors and artfully present composed dishes. At Ferris, his New American cuisine has many French influences as well as obvious Asian leanings with inclusions of

yuzu, miso, and ponzu in several of the offerings; while the yogurt and succulent lamb that accompanied agnolotti stuffed with a pleasing burst of sweet creamy carrot filling gave an impression of Morocco. Minimalism showcases Chef Proechel’s talents best, as with his outstanding mackerel dish, served with an egg yolk nested by tiny pieces of Italian plum, and a delicate pool of ponzu. The fish was perfectly moist with a coveted crispy exterior, and proved to be a great bite with the yolk, plum, and sauce. Additionally, a slightly aggressive char of eggplant jam provided a nice note to chunky slices of precisely-cooked duck breast and side of rutabaga; and we loved the charred broccolini with crispy brussels sprout leaves, yogurt, and cashews. It is always nice to see seasonal vegetables celebrated, especially when the often undervalued sun choke is the star of an entree. Here, they are
oven-roasted and served with smoked cabbage, and rounded out by sweet touches of blood orange and scallion miso. With nice varietals from the United States and Europe, the wine list is impressive; but it is the house specialty cocktails that steal the show. We especially liked a vodka, fennel, ginger, and lime drink called L’Amie that had a spicy kick and was playfully garnished with a big slice of fennel. To end the meal, we asked for something light, and received a heavenly palate-cleansing dessert of frozen yogurt, little fruit slices, and lime. It was a perfect and refreshing way to close out a fantastic meal.

royal red opulence and crystal chandeliers. The multilevel pavilion outfitted from scratch by the architectural firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro provides guests three separate dining sections—one by the kitchen; one facing south, overlooking the theater spaces, and the other faces west. The wine tower is a spectacle to observe and the cream covered chairs add to the prosperity of the establishment. A pianist comes in at 7pm daily to provide live music and entertainment to diners while they indulge in delightful dishes. This holiday season, Lincoln Square Steak will be introducing family-style Italian classics to the menu such as Chicken Parm for Two served in a square grandma pan and Homemade Meatballs. For New Years Eve, Lincoln Square Steak will have a live 3-piece Jazz Band for entertainment and offer all guests a complimentary glass of champagne at midnight and guests can order off of the regular a la carte rather than an overpriced and limited pre fix menu.

One of the resort’s most popular amenities is the 20,000 square foot Willow Stream Spa and Fitness Center. Guests receive services in one of 20 treatment rooms including a couple’s suite in the treetops, along with two mineral pools and steam rooms. elcome to the stunning Pulitzer hotel, located in Amsterdam between the Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht canals. The Pulitzer began as twelve restored interconnected canal houses, and has grown to the modern day intricate maze of now twenty five canal houses, featuring 225 guest rooms and suites. The latest renovation of this magnificent hotel was completed in 2016, which combines classic beauty with contemporary style fit for the modern day. For context, this stunning 5 star hotel is located in the historical Nine Streets neighborhood, which was central to business deals and trade for Dutch

aristocrats back in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Today, this area is central to many of the main attractions of Amsterdam, such as the Anne Frank Hois, Van Gogh Museum, and the many boutique restaurants and cafes that Amsterdam has to offer. Upon entrance, the lobby of the Pulitzer takes your breath away. The lobby boasts colorful, classy upholstered furniture, high ceilings, and gorgeous artwork and portraits. In addition, the staff is very friendly, and the concierge is available to help in planning events both inside and
outside of the hotel. If one is interested in hosting a meeting or event, the hotel features countless venues, depending on the type of event and size of the party. Our favorite was the Garden Room, fit for 150 guests, which is flooded with natural light through the large traditional Dutch style windows to perfectly illuminate the collection of trees and garden pots. The Pulitzer serves as both a hotel for a couple’s retreat, as well as a stunning location for a wedding or business conference. This hotel has many attractions, most notably the Pulitzer bar and Jansz. In short, the Pulitzer bar is

a timeless classic, with views overlooking the canals. Here, guests can enjoy cocktails inspired by the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, where each cocktail is named after the many characters, such as the “Carraway Fizz” named after protagonist Nick Carraway. Next, Jansz serves as both a breakfast and dinner restaurant for the hotel guests. For breakfast, Jansz offers both a great menu and a diverse spread of breakfast essentials, such as salmon, bread, assorted cheeses, fruits, and fine meats. For dinner, Jansz offers a robust menu of items designed to please the entire family, such as the Roasted Duck, Reypenaer Cheese Burger, and our favorite, the Dover Sole Meuniere. During the daytime, the Pulitzer offers a roughly 75 minute canal tour on their signature boat, created in 1909. This exact boat was ridden by Winston Churchill back in 1946! In addition to the daily tours, guests can reserve a private tour with “the Tourist” to enjoy champagne and a floating picnic. Throughout the tour, guests will enjoy both a comprehensive tour of Amsterdam, as well as the history behind this magnificent city. The rooms at the Pulitzer are the focal point of the hotel, as each room is different from the next. Most notably, the Pulitzer suite is extraordinary, which highlights Mr. Pulitzer’s ambition to unite

the new and old in perfect harmony. This breathtaking suite is comprised of distinctive furniture, historical architecture detail, and the grand highlight, the free standing bathtub. The free standing bathtub completes the elegance of this room, and serves as the ultimate romantic spot to relax after a long day of tourism. In addition, the suite features a beautiful hanging chandelier in the center of the room, a desk for reading and writing, a bar stand complete with an assortment of wine and spirit glasses, and maybe the most comfortable Super King sized bed we have ever slept on. Moreover, this suite boasts high ceilings, elegant artwork and molding, electronically controlled curtains which can be opened to enjoy the beautiful garden view,
a most powerful overhead shower, and is finished off with vibrant accent furniture, which completes the room. To say this least, this is the most elegant suite a person could dream of, designed to spark to the romantic within you. To conclude, it is a certainty that the Pulitzer hotel should be at the absolute top of your list when planning a trip to Amsterdam. This hotel is truly unlike any other in Amsterdam, or in our opinion, any other in the world. Its unique design and structure provide for a stay that you will never forget. Pulitzeramsterdam.com

A Luxurious Escape to the Lesser Known Cities in
CALIFORNIA
By Courtney Travin

When venturing to the Golden State of California, there is more to see outside of the most popular destinations such as San Francisco or Los Angeles that all the tourists flock to. There is a plethora of hidden gems waiting to be discovered that are just as full of excitement and adventure such as Fort Bragg, Silicon Valley, and Santa Barbara. First Stop: Fort Bragg, California Want to escape from it all? The Inn at Newport Ranch is located in Fort Bragg California and is

3 and 1/2 hours north of San Francisco. If you are looking for something different from a standard hotel and want to experience a quaint inn surrounded by redwood trees with breathtaking ocean views that feels just like you are at your country home, then Newport Inn is a 5-star experience for you. The architecture in the main building is bold, yet intimate and is constructed from the surrounding redwood trees that also double as support columns throughout the property. As soon as
you walk into the main Inn space, you are welcomed by a harmonious blend of warm colors and smooth textures, which puts you immediately at ease away from your busy lifestyle. The Inn has three unique luxury suites, along with three other lodging options on the property. For the best oceanfront views, we recommend the Captain’s Suite in the main building. If you are looking for larger accommodations, the Redwood House is just for you. Each suite has a unique look and is equipped with a living room, dining area, kitchen, fireplace, and deck. The Grove Suite and the

Newport Suite have hot tubs, while the Birdhouse Suite has a sauna. The staff is impeccable with their service and go out of their way to accommodate and make you feel comfortable. If you are feeling a bit of cabin fever, you can explore the twenty miles of coastal redwood hiking and riding trails, or participate in one of the many activities offered by the Inn. We recommend the ATV Safari. Watch out for golden eagles, foxes, coyotes, and even bobcats on this 1 to 1 ½ hour adventure throughout the 20,000 acres of property. After your day of adventure, you can head back to the Inn for a cozy evening by the fireplace with your book, or stay outside to enjoy the countless stars in the evening sky far away from the city lights. We highly recommend this inn for your next vacation. A stay of comfort and adventure awaits you. You will fall in love with the property, just the owner Will Jackson did many years ago; “The view of the coast was breathtaking. I knew at that moment that we should buy the property.” Only an hour away from the Inn at Newport Ranch, indulge in an afternoon of fine wine tasting at the Goldeneye Vineyard. The view of the spectacular surrounding rolling hills and redwood forests will delight, as you sip and smell the aromatic bouquet of the most delicious wines in the region. Enjoy the night out, while savoring the season’s best foods at The Bewildered Pig in Philo. The flavorful dishes like the house-made Country Pork Pate or The Truffle Roasted Cornish Game Hen are inspired by local farmers, fisherman, ranchers and artists who collaborate with the restaurant chefs to bring you a mouthwatering culinary experience in a rustic and unique setting. We would highly recommend eating here. Second Stop: Silicon Valley Whether visiting for business or pleasure, the Four Seasons Hotel Silicon Valley is only a short 30-minute drive from the San Francisco International Airport and features spacious and luxuriously appointed rooms with a modern, sleek design. After a day of meetings or touring, unwind with an on-demand glass of wine from the Plum wine dispenser conveniently located in your room, or you can book a massage or schedule a private yoga session at the hotel spa. To indulge in the regional flavors of Santa Barbara, visit Barbareno located in a residential neighborhood on State Street close to the region where the first avocados were grown in the US back in 1871. Another local favorite is Les Marchands wine bar and bistro, located in the Funk Zone, just steps away from the Hotel Californian. Chef Weston Richards whips up high quality, yet simple dishes that are delightful to the palette. The Shakshuka, a baked egg, tomato, and feta dish is a fan favorite. Les Marchand selects its 400 Eurocentric wines from top wineries. We had the pleasure of meeting Clementine Carter, who offered a tasting of her fine wines from her neighboring vineyard, Carter Estate Winery, to go with our meal.
An unforgettable adventure awaits within these hidden gems of California just waiting to be discovered.

A Strange Story of Love and Espionage: Review Of BROADWAY’s
“M. BUTTERFLY”
By Barry Bassis
D
avid Henry Hwang’s 1988 play “M. Butterfly” raises questions about relationships between westerners and Asians and about men and women that would seem to be especially relevant today. Its current revival at the Cort Theatre (138 W 48th St.), directed by Julie Taymor, has a text that has been revised to include more of the facts of the case that inspired the play. The central figure, Gallimard, is based on Bernard Bouriscot, a French civil servant who had a 20-year love affair with a Chinese spy, the Beijing opera singer Shei Pei Pu. The Mata Hari was in this instance a man masquerading as a woman. The French may have coined the phrase “vive la difference” but this character didn’t seem to know the difference. Or at least, in “M. Butterfly,” he is easily duped. Since he was married, albeit unhappily, he presumably knew about gender distinctions. The play begins with Gallimard in prison in France, expressing amazement that he has become a celebrity. The scene then switches to a dinner party, where is mocked as “a national embarrassment.” Then, there is a flashback to the fatal meeting
at a Chinese performance of Gallimard’s favorite opera, Puccini’s “Madame Butterfly.” Song Liling (the Shei stand-in) is playing CioCio-San in her death scene. Though she does not have an operatic voice, Gallimard thinks she’s perfect for the role. Song disagrees and criticizes the opera as feeding into western phantasies of submissive Asian women. At Song’s recommendation, he subsequently attends a performance of the Chinese opera “The Butterfly Lovers,” where Song is again portraying the title character. They meet afterward and Song describes his character as a girl who disguises herself as a boy to obtain an education. In traditional Chinese operas, men played female roles and so Gallimard thinks Song is a man. At a later meeting, Song confides that he is really a woman but that his parents wanted a boy and listed him as such in the official papers. To try to reveal the truth after their death, he says, would expose him to criminal penalties. Thus, Gallimard falls in love with what he believes is a woman masquerading as a man to play females on stage. Talk about gender confusion!
Song induces Gallimard to pass diplomatic secrets, some of which relate to the Vietnam War. The new version of the play includes Song’s clinical description of how he persuaded Gallimard that he was having sex with a woman. This might have been best kept as a mystery. The problem that remains is that the play presents Gallimard as a clumsy heterosexual. In truth, he seems to have been at least bisexual. After all, if the Chinese government believed the diplomat were straight, it would have simply set him up with a beautiful Asian woman. Why go to all the trouble of setting up a ruse with a cross-dresser? As Gallimard, the charismatic Clive Owen makes this character as believable and sympathetic as possible. Jin Ha does a creditable job as Song even if he seems unlikely to convince anyone he is female. Julie Taymor’s production with Paul Steinberg’s sets is not up to the standards of her better prior productions, such as “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” or “The Magic Flute” at the Metropolitan Opera.

BOOKS du JOUR DECEMBER 2017 By Frederic Colier General@bookcasetv.com
A
question writers often ask me is when is the best time to release a book? While summer certainly is not the best, since most of us stopped paying attention to our cluttered places and spend more time outside, while the mind is looking for amusement, after long periods of sheltered ruminations; while the Russian cloud may not have lifted but light dinners, lazy evenings, indulgence in over-stretched social gatherings, punctuated with a trip to the beach or the nearest mountain walk, are the real mandates, the rest of the year works depending on the content of the book. Yet, there are books which will not be impacted by the time of their release. A timelessness prevails about them. Below you will find a selection of books that reflects a perennial agenda, perfect for the coming cold months.
(Trinity, pp 336, $28.00)
(Delphinium Books, pp 224, $24.00)
(Little, Brown and Company, pp 348, $27.00)
(TBR Books, pp 210, $19.99)
Something unexpected will happen upon reading the chapters of this captivating book. Your nostrils will feel the iodine-laden air brushing as the winds break like waves upon the shores of your assumptions. They will jolt into wakeupness. If you ever thought that the constant ebb and flow of the sea was something simple, think again. Jonathan White, an expert sailor, thought he did and came close to pay dearly for his naïve belief. Maps and tide charts reveal only the partial story of tides, the mechanical one. All along the pages of “Tides,” White offer another impressive perspective.
Here is a book that could easily be missed out. So delicate in tone and style that it reads like a minuet. It is precisely the finely chiseled and graceful sentences that make this sonorous book all the more moving. Its topic, on the other hand, reads more like a symphony. A multi-layered memoir, which deals with the life of books and their influence on our lives, but without ever becoming cacophonous. Its impact, however, could not be louder, so much the ideas tackled are gigantic. You would have to be tone-deaf to miss the point Hill is driving home.
This book is about education and the teaching of foreign language in the American school system . . . And this book is about community and the use of other languages within a specific social framework . . . This book is also about cultures, ancestries, foreign roots, identities, and above all how they manifest through other languages. You could leave a blank space and fill it with your own input, and chances is that it would be coherent. Because, at heart, this book is a love-letter to the preservation of linguistic diversity.
“Tides” is first a powerful anthem to the sea, a hymn to a misunderstood life-cycle, and a must-read engagement with the world’s most iconoclastic waters. If anything, you will learn that without tides life would miss movement and would be radically different on land. To learn about tides is to understand the daily multi symbiosis taking place, all over the world. How milieus rely on each other, not simply a toing and froing between sandpipers and mud-shrimps, or blue mussels and crabs, but how the pendulum movement is intimately integrated with migrations of birds and reproductive cycle of species, ours included. The pages will flick through your fingers, as it becomes obvious that our modern understanding has been severely confined to our economic and cultural needs. The worst offender is our view of nature as a place of competition.
“She Read to Us in the Late Afternoons” is about the rendition of a courageous young American idealist taking a teaching job in Nigeria in 1963, and who thinks she is going to remake the world. If her memoir could be a grain of sand, each chapter describes a unique universe of self-questioning, which echoes with so much truism that you will catch yourself nodding as her journey progresses, with universal truth. Big frictions are raised. The validity of a western education, which displace traditional values and cultures, in the name of economic development. It is not just the horror of the ivory trade, as in “Heart of Darkness,” or the indoctrination of charmed African workers laboring merrily in coffee plantations as in “Out of Africa, but also the disruptive voice of “When Things Fall Apart” which departs from the accepted discourse of obvious legacy of the white man’s burden. And Hill does not fall in the trap of explaining all the whys.
The opening chapter of “Never Out of Season,” exposes the book premise flat out. It deals with the short history of bananas. This rather prosaic fruit, available in abundance, at least in New York, from every street vendors on most street corners, is not the result of simple happenstance or sustained popular delight. Its ubiquitous presence is both the product of refined methods of distribution and the result of a long selective agricultural process, an outcome we have grown to rely and take for granted. This hegemony of productivity is what Dunn, through this masterfully well-documented book replete with singular stories, reading like detective stories, underlines with conviction to sound the alarm. Indeed, even if you do not buy his banana argument, his historical cases will not leave you indifferent to the danger of monoculture, and all the risks associated with it. While history has proven over and over the futility of such approach, we willingly continue in the same direction. The banana turned to be a big societal disaster. Following the banana trail, he merges into the potato territories and the Great Irish Famine of 1845-48, by going to the roots of the problem, chronicling the pest arrival, its development, and the reason devastation on such scope happened at all, while Ireland was still exporting food towards England. Was it simply because of lack of communications? The protectionism that always accompanies the defense of special interests? Or was it the failure of scientists to gain credibility while they held solutions within reach? . . .
But the book’s true revolutionary spirit, which he clearly captures, reveals that like all revolutions, this one started as grassroots movements, scattered around the nation, with little connections with each other. Far from being led by radical and heated spirits, these groups were led by mothers and fathers, with no legal and educational expertize, but with simply the eagerness to transmit their native tongue to their children. The revolution is that over the last 5-7 years, these groups have mushroomed all over big cities and are transforming education in a global way. Jaumont shows how these groups succeeded in establishing dual language programs in their community. He covers a wide range of languages: Chinese, Russian, French, Japanese, Polish, and so on, to show how these parents did it. The real nugget of this book lies precisely on this latest remark. For anyone wishing to give their children a bilingual education, this book is a must-read. It is above all a roadmap to navigate your way through the educational school maze and their treacherous administrative hurdles. His message is loud and clear, whether you speak Chinese or Serbian, you too can implement new programs, and he has the merit to tell you how to do it. Merci mille fois!
White crossed the world and back to bring about his fascinating accounts, visiting the great Canadian North and Okney Island in Scotland, via the Bay of Mont Saint Michel in France, to the Hangzhou Bay in China, and many more, to show that although tides vary depending where they are located, they also demonstrate vital common features. His is to demystify our modern hypothesis. There is no survival of the fittest, but a synchronized moondance leading to the spirit of cooperation. Our paradigms, we know now, have been wrong and have wronged us. The consequences have been enormous. Time for a new tide to come in wash off past mistakes so that we can re-think everything new again.

What makes this memoir so captivating is that the journey is undertaken through fiction novels. Hill excels at navigating through the labyrinth of her trajectory back to the source of the long river of colonialism, starting back at Badagry. What is it like to read “Portrait of a Lady” thousand miles away from home, in the darkest jungle? Can books really teach us anything if they taint our reality with fiction from other worlds? Of course, there is a chapter on “Madame Bovary,” who epitomizes de facto the issue of self-deception. Chances are we have all been infected with Bovarism somewhere in our life. Though a work of non-fiction, “She Read to Us in the Late Afternoons” come in a world increasingly globalized to make us ponder over our decisions and lives. Is anyone immune at all? Are you living your life or the one expected from you? “She Read to Us in the Late Afternoons” will keep you pondering.
“Never Out of Season,” goes on to analyze other scourges impacting cassava, wheat and more . . . What becomes transparent in the search for solutions against blight and pests, wracking havoc on continents and political stability, is that successes have been completely reliant on set of isolated individuals, anti-conformists of sort, often pushed to follow their instincts. You will learn much through their stubborn efforts: their frustrations and years of failure. The price we paid for easy gains and quickfixed politics come with a high risky tag. Dunn warned us, with the growing global population, we are walking a thin line. Just steps away from a repeat. It is precisely past mistakes that bring the promise of hope.
Its arrival could not be more timely. A disruptive force in this age of nativist revivalism, where pluralistic criteria are perceived as threats to uniformity and stability of a nation. Jaumont, a specialist in these linguistic issues, has crafted a remarkable history of bilingual and dual education, which runs counter to this ideology. This is what he calls the bilingual revolution. He seeks to debunk the monolingual myth.

THE CHRISTMAS SEASON OF GIVING IS HERE By Jane Pontarelli
“Where there’s life there’s always hope.” I introduce you to December’s, Wendy Diamond.
I
n 1999, after rescuing her first shelter animals (a purebred Russian blue she named Pasha, and then a Maltese named Lucky), Diamond became ardently motivated to help save the 12 million animals euthanized in shelters every year. She launched Animal Fair Media including the premiere pet lifestyle magazine to bridge celebrities with animal rescue. Animal Fair Media’s specific mission in mind and spirit: is to save disenfranchised, helpless animals in shelters as well as endangered wildlife worldwide by promoting animal welfare and rescue, healthy pet lifestyles, and responsible breeding. Renowned celebrities that graced Animal Fair magazine covers include: Beyoncé Knowles, Charlize Theron, Serena Williams, Hilary Duff, Halle Berry, Halle Berry, Pamela Anderson, Shania Twain, Jessica Alba, Bo Derek, Diane Lane, to name a few. When Diamond started Animal Fair Media in 1999, 12 million animals were euthanized in shelters annually. Since the conception and launch of Animal Fair the numbers have nosedived to 2.7 million annually. Diamond gathered animal enthusiasts around the world by by creating the very first pet fashion show in history and throwing amazing pet-themed soirees, with one goal in mind to raise money for disenfranchised animals. The clever party names are enough to make you howl: Paws For Style, Howloween, Yappy Hour, and St. Pawtricks Day. Trust me I know how fabulous these events are - Lulu and I walked the runway for Paws For Style. Lulu sashayed the catwalk in her couture red ball gown, custom designed by Kleinfeld. All money raised at the event benefitted The Humane Society of New York. Sometimes life just happens, and changes a person’s destiny and gives hope. Animal Fair media’s inspiration and Maltese mascot Lucky died after a battle with canine cancer. A friend asked Wendy to foster a senior dog; Baby Hope. She never planned on keeping her at the time, and although a little ruff around the edges, she was paw-sitively heaven sent. The morning Lucky passed over the Rainbow Bridge. The reality, sad, and heartbreaking truth is that now her beloved Baby Hope’s heart is failing, and she is getting weaker every day. Wendy recently adopted a new Coton pup named Happy. Wendy hopes Baby Hope will teach

Happy the tricks and trades of being her pet, and the furry mascot for Animal Fair Media. Hope is passing the baton to Happy. Diamond didn’t stop her philanthropy work with animal rescue. On November 19th, 2014 she launched Women’s Entrepreneurship Day (WED) at the United Nations, a yearly event celebrated in 144 countries, and 110 universities worldwide. WED is a day to celebrate, support and empower women entrepreneurs and women-owned businesses globally. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio proclaimed Women’s Entrepreneurship Day, and Congress entered WED 2017 into The Congressional Record. The WED conversation of empowering women worldwide, will announce on November 30th the launch of #ChooseWOMEN initiative! The social platform gives consumers who enter the shopping portal the opportunity to learn the significant importance of empowering women in business, magnitude of microloans, and the ability to shop at their favorite stores while also giving back! A portion of each sale goes directly to benefiting impoverished women with microloans, which helps support and sustain the community wellbeing of women entrepreneurs around the world. Utilizing the online global database, will help harness massive purchasing power in the name of supporting more women in business worldwide. Diamond proudly holds three Guinness World Records: Lucky Diamond (her rescued Maltese) is The Animal Photographed with the Most Celebrities, with 363 celebrities, Baby Hope (her rescued Coton) had the most expensive pet wedding in history, raising money for a wing
at the Humane Society of New York, and Wendy herself received a Guinness for the longest curtsey relay in 5 minutes of 314 curtsies. In addition to these world-record shattering awards, in May of 2016, Wendy joined the ranks of former presidents, media icons, humanitarians, and more when she was awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. Diamond has penned best-selling books including: Chicken Soup for the Soul: What I Learned from the Dog, What I Learned from the Cat, My Cat’s Life, My Dog’s Life, How to Understand Men Through Their Dogs, How to Understand Women Through Their Cats and It’s a Dog’s World: The Savvy Guide to Four-Legged Living.
