EARLY INSPIRATION: A CHILDHOOD SPARK

Q: MyKayla, can you share the moment or individual that first inspired you to pursue gymnastics?

MyKayla Skinner: It's actually kind of crazy. I started gymnastics when I was five. My mom was a swimmer and really didn’t know much about gymnastics, but she knew she didn't want her kids to be swimmers, so she encouraged us to try something different. My older brother and two older sisters all did gymnastics. When I was born, my sisters would play with me, teaching me all the tricks and basics of gymnastics. My mom eventually put me in classes when I was five.

Interestingly, I didn't always love gymnastics. All I wanted to do was play with my friends and have fun. Gymnastics requires such a commitment, even at a young age, and I wasn't initially ready for that level of dedication. My mom let me take a couple of hours of classes a week, nothing too intense. My coaches at the time, who were family friends, saw my talent and believed I could go to the Olympics. My mom was skeptical, thinking it was a one-in-amillion chance.

I continued with gymnastics, reaching level eight, the highest level my gym offered. The ultimate goal in gymnastics is level 10, then you go to college gymnastics, and Elite is the Olympic route. After two years at level eight, my coaches urged my mom to switch me to a different gym that could further my skills. Finally, at 12, I moved to Desert Lights Gymnastics. Walking into that gym, I was amazed by the equipment and foam pits, which I had never experienced before.

My coach, Lisa, put me into the Elite program within my first week. Suddenly, I was training seven hours a day, 42 hours a week. To accommodate this, I was homeschooled from sixth through eighth grade. Later, I decided to attend high school, which was incredibly challenging. My schedule was strenuous: waking up at 6 AM, attending school until noon, and training from 1 PM to 8 PM. I missed many school days. Despite the hardships, it was around the age of 12 that I realized I genuinely wanted to pursue gymnastics at the highest level and aim for the Olympics.

Winning an Olympic medal was the highlight of my career, but being a mom is even more rewarding.

UNIQUE CHALLENGES: OVERCOMING THE ODDS

Q: Competing at the highest level often comes with significant challenges. What were some of the unique obstacles you faced, both on and off the mat, and how did you overcome them?

MyKayla Skinner: Pursuing the Olympic route requires a certain kind of gymnast. You have to be mentally and physically tough and gutsy. The skills we're doing are over-the-top—dangerous and unbelievable. I had to learn so many skills quickly because I was behind. It was intense, but it worked out.

I have 12 nieces and nephews; My siblings are several years older than me. I became an aunt at 10. Because of my schedule, I missed out on many family moments, like birthday parties and babysitting. By the end of the week, I was burnt out and just wanted to rest. Training seven hours a day, attending camps, and dealing with gymnastics' mental and physical demands was tough. My mom had to keep me going because there were many days I wanted to quit.

Growing up in the gymnastics world at the time I did was extreme, like going to boot camp. I cried the night before camp many times, trying to find excuses to avoid it. The intensity of the camps felt overwhelming. Sometimes, I felt like I was on autopilot–I knew this was what I had to do to reach the Olympics. I remember my first national team camp with Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin. I Skyped my mom,

bawling, saying I never wanted to go back. But I knew I had to push through if I wanted to achieve my goals.

The Covid-19 pandemic was brutal. The pandemic not only disrupted my training but also tested my mental resilience and adaptability, forcing me to find new ways to stay in shape and maintain my focus.

The Olympics were postponed, and I had to train for another year. I deferred my senior year of college and faced uncertainty. Arizona allowed me to train in the gym with coaches only. During this time, I developed a bone spur injury but managed it with PRP injection and shockwave therapy. Then I got Covid-19, and it hit me hard. I was out for a month and then got pneumonia. I felt my Olympic dreams were over.

Having faith and God in my life has been significant. Praying and family support helped me stay positive. I trained hard and made the national team, placing fifth in the Olympic trials. I was chosen as an event specialist. Competing at the Olympics, I nailed my bar and beam routines. My teammates' support was incredible. Despite setbacks, I pushed through. I prayed and kept hearing, "It's not over yet."

Off the mat, I‘ve faced challenges as well. Like other athletes, I've faced unfairness, cheating, and obstacles that most people aren’t aware of behind the scenes. There’s always the temptation to give up, but I kept pushing through. I wanted to make the Olympic team so much that I learned not to be swayed by what people said. Looking back, I sometimes wonder how I survived those camps, politics, and hardships. I strived to be mentally and physically tough; I made it happen because I wanted it so badly.

Being laser-focused was the driving force behind my going to the Olympics. However, throughout my career, having the unwavering support of my family, the encouragement of my coaches, the camaraderie of my teammates, and the understanding of my friends made the most significant difference. Going into the 2020 Olympics, being married and having my husband's support was beyond amazing. I’m grateful for all the support and am proud of my journey. My journey is to inspire women and athletes worldwide.

BALANCING EXPECTATIONS AND PRESSURE

Q: Olympians are often seen as the epitome of perfection and resilience. How do you handle the immense pressure and expectations placed on you, and what strategies do you use to maintain your mental health and well-being?

MyKayla Skinner: The pressures are immense, and social media adds a whole new layer. Even as a young athlete and teenager, I faced hurtful remarks online. People would make harsh comments, and as a young girl, I took them to heart. There were many times I wanted to give up because I felt the whole world hated me. I wasn't naturally flexible or graceful, so I had to work hard on my execution. People often forget that gymnastics is about more than just looking pretty; it's also about strength and power.

Despite the negativity, I knew I wanted to prove people wrong. When I decided to come back to elite gymnastics after college, many doubted me. But in three months, I made the national team and the world team in 2019. I hope this inspires a new genera-

tion of gymnasts to pursue both college and elite gymnastics, something that was unheard of when I was growing up in the sport.

Competing at the University of Utah in front of 15,000 fans was exhilarating. Despite the politics and challenges surrounding the sport, I chose to thrive. The support from my husband, Jonas, was crucial. He encouraged me to start a YouTube channel documenting my journey to the Olympics. That was a turning point, allowing people to know the real me and get a glimpse of the hard work behind the scenes.

Having faith and God in my life has been significant. I have learned that difficulty and pressure can bring opportunities. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Simone Biles stepped back at a difficult time to take care of herself, allowing me to step up and compete in the Vault finals. I won a silver medal for the team and our country. I was blessed with my mom, sister, Shawn Johnson, and Simone, who were tremendous inspirations. My faith has helped me through trials to become stronger. The Olympic journey was about more than a medal; it was about dedication and sacrifice. It was a miracle and a blessing.

INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION

Q: What advice would you give aspiring Olympians who dream of following in your footsteps? Are there specific lessons or experiences you believe are crucial for them to understand?

MyKayla Skinner: The journey to becoming an Olympian is undeniably long and challenging, but it's also incredibly rewarding. If I could go back and talk to my younger self, I'd say, "Look at everything you went through, and look at what you achieved." Things often go differently than planned, and you might face unexpected hurdles. It's important to understand that sacrifices are part of the process, and even though it's tough at the moment, it will be worth it in the end.

MyKayla Skinner’s Top Advice for Aspiring Olympians and Anyone Pursuing Excellence:

Stay Committed

Whatever you choose to pursue, it is going to be a long road. It's going to be tough, but it's worth it.

Stay Balanced

Remember, there's more to life than the Olympics or pursuing the ultimate award in any single endeavor.

Stay Resilient

If you keep going and "Never Give Up", anything is possible.

My core message to girls is unwavering perseverance.
"Never give up" was not just a motto but the driving force behind my Olympic journey.

During those difficult times, it can feel like the struggle is all there is. It was devastating when I didn't make the Olympic team in 2016. But going to college and competing there showed me that there's more to life than just the Olympics and gymnastics. I had a fantastic career in college, and earning my degree was crucial because you never know when you'll need it. So, if you persevere, you'll find your path even if you don't initially make the college sports team or reach the Olympics. The key is to have passion and love for what you're doing and to give it your all. It will never be easy, but anything is possible if you never give up and keep pushing forward.

FUTURE PLANS: LOOKING AHEAD

Q: Looking ahead, what are your plans for the future, both professionally and personally? Are there any exciting projects or goals you’re working towards that you’d like to share?

MyKayla Skinner: Winning an Olympic medal was the highlight of my career. After the Olympics, I knew I was retiring. My husband and I moved back to Utah, and I finished my degree in communications and journalism. I got pregnant and had our baby girl, Charlotte. Believe it or not, being a mom is more challenging than competing in the Olympics! Despite the challenges, being a mom is incredibly rewarding. I am watching my daughter grow and will be here to help guide her through her own challenges and triumphs.

Professionally, I have some exciting projects on the horizon, some TV appearances, and a few other thrilling things coming… but I can't reveal too much yet.

A LASTING IMPRESSION

MyKayla Skinner's journey from a young gymnast to an Olympic medalist is nothing short of inspiring. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance, the importance of support, personal faith and the confidence that anything is possible with hard work and determination. As she transitions into the next phase of her life, MyKayla continues to inspire and uplift those around her, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of gymnastics and beyond.

We look forward to following her journey.

Oriental Star’s

REVOLUTIONARY LUXURY BRANDING

How Sustainability, Quality, and Community Converge, Creating Truly Exceptional Experiences

Meet Founder Loulou Gao and Discover Her Collaborative Approach

In the ever-evolving world of luxury, Loulou Gao is making her mark by boldly redefining the way the industry books success. As the visionary founder of Oriental Star Consulting and Strategic Communications, established in 2017, Gao has dedicated herself to pioneering sustainable development strategies that are truly making waves in the luxury branding sector. “Now, more than ever, consumers in the luxury sector crave deeper, more meaningful connections with brands that prioritize sustainability and unparalleled quality,” she says. “Oriental Star supports high-quality, growing luxury brands in effectively carving out their market presence.”

For Gao, a woman of refined tastes with a real eye for elegance and the art of good living, the mission is also personal, driven by her passion for sustainability and distinction. Mid-sized, high-quality brands invest heavily in upholding their impeccable standards and commitment

to eco-friendliness, which is in high demand these days and helps set them apart from the rest. But producing sustainable luxury products incurs significant costs, and without the financial clout for aggressive advertising, their growth is stymied. Despite their exceptional offerings, many of these brands remain obscure. This is where Oriental Star steps in, seamlessly bridging the gap between these fine brands and their ideal clientele.

Unlike the industry giants, who pour millions into advertising, celebrity endorsements, and lavish event sponsorships, Gao has noticed that smaller brands often find themselves reliant on localized events and word-of-mouth. The saturation of social media only compounds their struggle to reach discerning customers.

Gao: “Oriental Star connects these brands with consumers through organic, highly effective methods. The brands I take under my wing are

meticulously selected, each one embodying the highest standards of quality and sustainability. We foster collaboration, enabling them to benefit mutually.”

This savvy approach goes beyond traditional advertising. By organizing collaborative events for non-competing brands with similar customer bases, Gao helps them maximize their exposure and engagement while sharing costs. She has organized bespoke events where highend tequila was paired with exquisite caviar, jewelry was showcased alongside haute couture, and luxury yachts were complemented by premium champagne. This synergistic and innovative strategy has proven immensely successful. Instead of competing, brands under Gao’s guidance are united by a shared philosophy of excellence. In fact, they often become each other’s customers, underscoring the thriving luxury community Gao is building.

Ultimately, her mission is to promote a luxury lifestyle organically, eschewing massive billboards and celebrity endorsements—though many celebrities are known to attend her exclusive events. At these gatherings, the products themselves become the stars, captivating attendees and fostering genuine connections. In essence, Oriental Star is creating a new and forward-thinking haven for high-quality, sustainable products, nurturing their organic growth and success. As a trailblazing female entrepreneur, Loulou Gao is proud to lead this movement, enabling brands not only to survive but to thrive.

Q: What inspired you to establish Oriental Star?

A: In my previous work, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to experience a wide range of events hosted by some of the world’s most recognizable luxury brands, which left an indelible mark on me. One that stands out in particular was organized by Dior. Every detail was bespoke and of the highest quality.

I knew that there was a tremendous opportunity to bring this sophistication and high-end

service to smaller brands that have outstanding products but often don’t know how to create that elevated, luxurious brand experience. At the same time, the bigger brands have conditioned high-end customers to expect flawless experiences. In the luxury space, brands are often measured by how they execute the smallest details. Seeing this opportunity, I established Oriental Star to bring top-tier consulting services to underserved small to mid-sized highend brands.

Q: Can you share a particularly memorable event you’ve organized that exemplifies the unique experiences Oriental Star creates?

A: I’m particularly proud of an unforgettable event we organized in Monaco for a young brand. Hosted at the Monaco Private Label annual conference under the Monaco royal family, planning this cocktail party faced several challenges. Firstly, MPL is highly exclusive. Secondly, guests were top-tier global elites with high standards. Third, my client was a young brand that was relatively unknown at the time, so we had to work hard to generate demand. The key that opened up this opportunity was the shared values between two crucial partici-

pants. The Monaco royal family has a longstanding commitment to environmental protection, which aligns with our client’s focus on sustainability.

This event not only showcased Oriental Star’s exceptional ability to organize high-end bespoke events, but also highlighted our meticulous attention to detail and innovative spirit. Through this event, we successfully created excitement for our client and enhanced the brand’s recognition and reputation among the world’s top-tier audience.

Q: What criteria ar most important to you when selecting brands to add to Oriental Star portfolio?

A: I have two criteria for brands I work with: high-quality products and sustainable development strategies. High quality means the product itself must be impeccable, not just the brand image. Genuine quality is essential, like a tree’s roots, which ensure its strength and longevity. The brands I work with need to have a real purpose that goes beyond just making great products. Working with brands that are committed to sustainability is not just important to me personally, but it’s something that consumers are increasingly looking for and evaluating brands on. Additionally, I am looking to create long-term partnerships, so it’s important to select clients that I genuinely enjoy working with and with whom there is mutual trust, rather than just a service relationship.

Q: Could you describe an instance where brands have collaborated in a way that significantly benefited both parties?

A: One of my clients, a high-end watch brand, was struggling to create events that felt dynamic, authentic, and alluring. Their customers reported that their previous events just felt like sales pitches. For an event two years ago, we introduced a tequila brand, which helped attract a fresh audience and made the event younger and more vibrant. Through a partnership with the watch brand and the tequila brand, we promoted three watches and invited a renowned mixologist to create cocktails inspired by the watches.

On the day of the event, guests were not informed of the specific location but were told to pick up wristbands at the store. When they

reached the bar, they learned the wristband colors corresponded to different cocktails and could only order the cocktail matching their wristband color. To try other cocktails, they had to interact with other guests. As a result, we created a sense of community and discovery. The watch brand was thrilled with the excitement the event generated, and the tequila brand was able to share its incredible products and beautiful story with a new, high-end audience that it had not interacted with before.

Q: What is the most gratifying feedback you have received from clients or attendees so far?

A: For me, the greatest success of an event is not just about the lively atmosphere or the high-profile attendees, although these are common measures. What truly gratifies me is when clients tell me days or weeks later, “We signed several new orders” or “We are in discussions for a collaboration with another brand we met at the event.” I value tangible results and prefer to measure success through outcomes. Such results not only enhance client satisfaction but also strengthen our partnership.

Q: What motivates you personally?

A: I am passionate about recommending products I love and have carefully selected. It’s fulfilling for me when people experience these products and give positive feedback. I thoroughly enjoy introducing exceptional products to a new, wider audience.

Q: What does the future have in store for Oriental Star?

A: I am excited about the future of Oriental Star, especially because I believe the definition of luxury itself is evolving. Particularly for the next generation of consumers interested in high-end products and luxury experiences, the values of the brands they support are equally important to the products. Our innovative approach helps to bring awareness of mid-sized brands to the types of consumers who will be passionate about them, and ultimately, our goal is to foster meaningful, lasting relationships between brands and consumers. These types of authentic connections will be critical to the success of growing, high-end brands. I’m excited to continue to help build that community.

Her son, Adam Waxman, has seamlessly joined her in this venture, bringing his flair and perspective to the table. Their stories are not merely about food and places but about the rich, interconnected experiences that make life truly memorable.

INSPIRATION BEHIND THE MAGAZINE

Sara, what initially inspired you to start DINE AND DESTINATIONS magazine? Can you share a specific moment or experience that solidified your vision for this publication?

Sara: When my children started school, I felt the need to fulfill my creative side, as I had done pre-motherhood. I wrote several cookbooks. After the success of the first book, I was approached by one newspaper and then another to write columns about dining and lifestyle. And so began a twenty-seven-year newspaper-columnist career as a restaurant critic and international food and travel writer. At the same time, I was a Contributing Editor in three top Canadian magazines in fashion, travel and lifestyle. In 2001, when my husband passed unexpectedly, I left all my jobs. In 2006, I felt the urge to write and share my thoughts again. At the urging of my friends and family, and even those for whom I had written previously, I started my own magazine, and in 2007, the first issue of DINE magazine was printed. A glossy, oversized publication, it contained 100 full pages of advertising and food, dining and travel articles and was met with great fanfare in Toronto and across Canada. After the first issue, I invited Adam to join me in the magazine as a mother-son team, and this was the best decision I ever made towards our success.

MOTHER-SON DYNAMICS

Adam, working alongside your mother in such a dynamic and demanding industry must have its unique challenges and rewards. How do you balance the professional and personal aspects of your relationship, and how does this dynamic influence the magazine?

Adam: I don’t know that there is a balance. It’s all personal. Our professionalism includes and demands that it’s personal. Everything we write, our relationship to our subjects and to our readers, has to come from a place of authenticity, and at the core of that is my relationship with my mother. We respect each other’s opinions and skills; there is no ego between us, and we share the same focus. We are of different generations have different interests and different influences, but we both have the same ethics and enthusiasm to share our experiences—and I learned that from her. The dynamics of the industry have been changing so much, and so we rely on each other more, and the fact that we can completely trust each other, is the reward that meets that challenge.

CULINARY ADVENTURES

Both of you have dined with some of the world's most innovative chefs. Can you recount a particularly memorable dining experience that significantly impacted your perspective on food and travel journalism, and how did it shape your approach to the magazine?

Sara: Many years ago in Shanghai, I was pleased to receive an invitation to a private dinner hosted by the Minister of Tourism. Adam, who lived and worked in Tokyo at the time, flew-in to join me. We all met in a beautiful private dining room with a table set in extraordinary splendor. The theme-colors were red and gold, and I recognized the exclusive Eng-

lish bone China pattern. The light reflected in the beautiful patina of the gold cutlery. When the Minister arrived with her assistant, Adam greeted her in a polite manner consistent with meeting a person of importance in Japan. The Minister's eyes lit up as she and Adam begin conversing in Japanese. It seemed that it was necessary in their profession to speak a second language, and she had chosen Japanese. Her Assistant had studied English at UCLA, so she and I spoke English. It would be impossible to describe the delicacy of the intricate dishes served, and the gracious style of service throughout. We were treated like royalty. But the conversation and connection through multiple languages—English, Mandarin, Japanese—was the most memorable part. We enjoyed our shared appreciation immensely. Sharing food together creates an intimacy and a friendship like no other experience. When you eat and drink with your neighbour, you can understand each other and live in harmony.

CHALLENGES IN PUBLISHING:

Sara, with your extensive background in food criticism and travel journalism, what are some of the major challenges you’ve faced in the publishing world, and how have you overcome them to maintain the high standards of DINE AND DESTINATIONS?

Sara: Our personal narrative is like a conversation that appeals to those who are reading vicariously for personal enjoyment, and for those who plan to travel to the destinations they’re reading about. No matter what changes we’ve encountered in this rapidly changing industry, we have never sacrificed the quality or authenticity of our content, because that is the commitment we’ve made to our readership, with whom we have built a trusted brand and reputation.

TRIUMPHS AND MILESTONES

Adam, can you share a few of the magazine's proudest moments or milestones? How have these successes shaped your aspirations for the future of DINE AND DESTINATIONS?

Adam: There are two decisions we’ve made spring to mind. The first is that for “Canada 150” we focused our 2018 publication on Canadian content, rather than a potpourri of subjects, and began publishing editorials in English, French and Mandarin. I believe through this, we conveyed our respect for our diversifying readership and probed deeper into regional and local interests with increasing attention toward responsible dining and sustainable tourism. That became a model for our successive issues. The second instance is when the pandemic began. Since the option of distributing print was not viable at that time, we were at a crossroad, and had to decide whether to fold or adapt. We transitioned to digital format, and with our first issue, gave away every single page of advertising complimentary. We wanted to show our support and solidarity with the restaurants, hotels and tourism associations with whom we were working. This has been a hallmark of our brand—that we support the dining and hospitality industries. That issue successfully launched our digital platform and enabled us to continue and thrive.

EVOLUTION OF CULINARY TRENDS

Sara, having witnessed numerous trends in the culinary world over the years, how do you ensure that DINE AND DESTINATIONS stays ahead of the curve and continues to captivate its audience with fresh and innovative content?

Sara: We have never followed trends. We have always actively sought out what is new and exciting. I was writing about risotto before it came to Toronto. I remember writing in my “year-end predictions” that we need to watch out for the $14 appetiser, back when that would have seemed exorbitant. When the pandemic began, Adam was one of the first to write about “ghost kitchens” and the rise in deliveries as the means of survival for Toronto restaurants. We’ve always been able to engage our readership and be relevant in our writing, because we’re always reading, and going out, and talking to people, because that’s what fuels our interests and our curiosities, as well.

FUTURE ASPIRATIONS

What are your long-term goals for DINE AND DESTINATIONS? Are there any new projects or expansions on the horizon that you’re particularly excited about?

Sara: I dream of having a beautiful print magazine again. I know that Adam would like to expand into more diverse media like podcasting and video. And of course, we’re always excited to collaborate with new partnerships, because you never know what new opportunities you’ll find when you turn to the next page.

COMMUNITY AND CULTURAL IMPACT

Both of you have been heavily involved in cultural and charitable causes. How do you incorporate this sense of giving back into your work with the magazine, and how do you believe it enriches the content and mission of DINE AND DESTINATIONS?

We wanted to show our support and solidarity with the restaurants, hotels and tourism associations with whom we were working. This has been a hallmark of our brand—that we support the dining and hospitality industries.
AdamWaxman

Adam: I think this goes back to your earlier question. It’s all personal. We can’t pretend to write about things that don’t matter to us. We investigate, explore and then share what we’ve discovered. That is our nature, and we believe that we have that to give; we have a trusted voice from which to promote the restaurateurs, vintners, farmers, artisans and wellness and tourism operators who are innovative and whose values comport with ours—values of responsibility, sustainability, accessibility and health. We put that into everything we do, and our readership feels the same way. Issues of seasonality or conservation are no longer esoteric buzzwords; they are vital to the healthy growth of each of these industries. We both believe that the opportunities we have to promote positive and constructive stories in an evocative and engaging manner, inspires and enriches ourselves as well as our readership. That is our mission and that is a great privilege.

MIAMI SWIM WEEK 2024

Summer

Trends and Styles

Miami Swim Week 2024 showcased an electrifying array of summer trends and styles that captivated fashion enthusiasts and industry insiders alike. This year's event highlighted the innovative spirit of designers who brought their unique visions to life on the runway. From vibrant colors and bold patterns to luxurious textures and timeless retro influences, the collections were a testament to the versatility and creativity of swimwear fashion. With exclusive photos from our featured photographer, Charles Barnes, we delve into the standout looks and emerging trends that defined Miami Swim Week, offering a glimpse into the future of summer style.

Featured Designers:

Ema Savahl, Amarotto, Adriana Fernandez, Azulu, Hunting Hue, Dippin' Daisy's, Oh Polly, Shan, Sinesia Karol, Swim Up-Cycle, Chloe Rose, Luli Fama, PQ Swim, Axil, Cupshe, and Leslie Amon

From my perspective, Miami Swim Week’s strength lies in its democratic nature, catering to a large base of constituents. Unlike other fashion categories, swimwear is wonderfully flexible, allowing for a vast array of designs to be showcased in Miami. It can be worn as a fashion statement, strictly utilitarian in purpose, or a blend of both, striking a perfect balance between style and function.

In reviewing the shows I covered, I found myself drawn to designs that were more practical in purpose for time at the beach, the pool, or any other venue where swim attire would be welcomed if not outright encouraged. My preference leaned towards designs, colors, and patterns that made a strong statement without overshadowing the individual wearing them. I appreciated designs that allowed the individual’s form and personality to shine through, enhancing their unique style without seeming dated or stale.

This year’s collections are inspired by tropical hues and embody the serene essence of a Miami sunrise with their pastel pinks and blues. They offer a calming, beach-inspired vibe reflective of the beautiful city of Miami Beach. The surprising color and texture combinations in these collections include not only pearls and pastels but also hardware elements like gold metals and vibrant tropical hues, creating a unique and captivating blend. We hope to inspire women in Miami and all over with our swimwear to just be their most confident and best selves in all the different textures, colors and style

BEAUTY ICON BOBBI BROWN STAR OF FUNDRAISING LUNCHEON FOR THE EAST HAMPTON EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

EAST HAMPTON, NY: On Thursday, July 11, 2024, iconic makeup artist Bobbi Brown captivated an audience of nearly 200 guests at the 4th annual East Hampton Emergency Department fundraiser luncheon, held at the picturesque Maidstone Club.

Chaired by East Hampton residents Jill Davis, Kate Davis, Hollis Forbes, Liz Lange, and Mary Margaret Trousdale the event began with a Q & A with Brown, moderated by BookHamp-

ton owner Carolyn Brody. The event was held in support of the new Stony Brook Medicine (SBM) East Hampton Satellite Emergency Department.

Brown, a legendary makeup artist, best-selling author, sought-after speaker, and the founder and chief creative officer of Jones Road Beauty, spoke about revolutionizing the beauty industry, how the Miracle Balm led to the start of Jones Road Beauty, what is in her makeup bag,

empowering women from all backgrounds to embrace who they are, and much more.

Brown’s philosophy is makeup should be quick and natural, and it should enhance who you are. “I wasn’t really a trained artist,” Brown noted about her start in the industry. “I put bronzer on their cheeks, and a liner around their eyes, and it wasn’t popular. A photographer started hiring me, Bruce Weber, who didn’t like makeup at all. I started doing those kind of things,

and experimenting with things that I wasn’t comfortable with, like Fashion Week and I just had a ball.”

Jones Road Beauty’s latest campaign, I Am Me, encourages all to focus on what they like about themselves, and embrace what makes them unique. "I've always been someone that has talked about confidence, the importance of confidence,” Brown noted.

The conversation culminated with a lightening round Q&A with questions from the audience.

Guests included Veronica Atkins, Marcia Dunn, Irina and Maximillian Eicke, Laura Fisch, Allegra Kelly, Dale Ellen Leff, Fern Mallis, Gretta Monahan, Jackie Mitchell, Charlotte Moss, Louise Phanstiel, Angel Schade, Virginia Schwerin, Jean Shafiroff, Nancy Stone, Annette Theiss, Diane Tuft, Sarah Wetenhall, and Melanie Wambold.

Following the talk, a delicious lunch was served and guests stayed on to enjoy the ocean views and to mingle with friends. Guests were also treated to gift bags containing Jones Road Beauty Miracle Balm in Happy Hour and Just a Sec Eyeshadow in Bronze.

The new Stony Brook Medicine East Hampton Satellite Emergency Department is currently under construction and scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2024 and open in the spring of 2025. It will operate under the Stony Brook Medicine healthcare system, which includes Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, and Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital.

It will provide essential services to visitors and residents from Bridgehampton to Montauk. Fundraising for the new facility has been a partnership between the Southampton Hospital

Foundation, East Hampton Healthcare Foundation, and SBM. The East Hampton Satellite Emergency Department will encompass approximately 22,000 square feet providing:

• Cardiac monitoring capability in every exam room

• Dedicated suite for advanced imaging

• Fast-track treatment rooms for general, pediatric, obstetrics/gynecology, and ophthalmology patients

• On-site ambulance for hospital

• Isolation rooms (2)

• Resuscitation room

Days after graduating from college, Betsabé Ruiz begins her first job on Wall Street, where she plans to save enough money to eventually pursue her dreams of becoming a theatre actress. What she didn’t anticipate was that this job would allow her barely enough free time to sleep or hang out with friends, let alone take acting classes. She didn’t apprehend the magnitude of the wealth that would be swirling about her, either, or how the long hours and close quarters would infuse her professional relationships with intimacy. Still, she does her best to navigate this uncharted territory at work, where she makes an unlikely best friend and develops an unexpected attraction to her boss. Told in the retrospective as a letter to her unborn son, Daughter of a Promise is a coming-of-age tale in which a naïve Betsabé assumed leaving her past behind was the prerequisite for succeeding as an adult. The wisdom she ultimately passes on to her child, however, is steeped in the very traditions within which her grandmother raised her back in Miami.

Ilse Erlund is a translator who lives in a house on stilts along the west coast of Greenland. Isolated and restless in her world by the sea, she convinces her publisher to pay for a trip to the country she has never visited but whose language she speaks fluently: France. Her mission is to translate the verses of Geoffrey “Po” Labaye, a charismatic poet known as “the last living troubadour of Provence.”

Upon arrival in the medieval hilltop village of Belle Rivière, Ilse falls under the spell of the Provençal way of life, captivated by the air, the sun, the vibrant spring colors, and the dulcet sounds of the dialect. Soon enough, Ilse is captivated by the poet, too, and she and Po develop a daily rhythm and warm camaraderie— which is disrupted by the arrival of the poet’s son, Frey. Though he has a fiancée back in Paris, Frey turns his attentions to Ilse, and suddenly she is forced to learn another language, one her translation skills have not prepared her to decode. Where—and with whom—does her future lie?

With an eye and ear attuned to the sensibilities of French life, Elizabeth Birkelund has created a love story about a woman forced to choose between the security of her quiet northern home and the possibility of the life of her dreams.

Meanwhile, Devlin Grayer has been elected as the 46th President of the United States and his wife, Milicent, is miserable in her new role as First Lady—especially because the Great Mothers have asked Milicent to use her new status to help their cause, and she has no interest in tackling that task.

BUCKSHIRE 6681 GREENHILL RD, LUMBERVILLE, PA | $2,695,000

Buckshire, a sophisticated reproduction of a proper Cotswald County Estate. The 6 bedroom, 4.5 bath home is sited among lush landscaping, esteemed gardens and walking paths and a vibrant waterfall against stone walls. This property has a unique pedigree because it was frequently visited by Julia Child. The home belonging to her husband's brother was the site of her wedding reception and, it is rumored, that many of her early recipes were first executed in the existing kitchen.

One of the more stunning aspects of the interior is the large, open concept Great Room with a centrally located curved staircase that acts as a nucleus. The ornate details include, polished flooring, French doors, period fireplaces and custom woodworking, all work, cumulatively, to form a stellar environment. The kitchen is full of light and contains a glass solarium that acts as a Breakfast Room. The bedrooms are located so that the primary suite is private and important. A short walk from the home is the guest cottage. This one bedroom cottage is the perfect location for guests, relatives or a writer’s studio.

BRAMINGHAM

6068 STONEY HILL RD, NEW HOPE, PA | $4,500,000

PERFECT FAMILY COUMPOUND FREQUENTLY VISITED BY JULIA CHILD

A long, private meandering drive delivers you to the newly renovated and reimagined Bramingham Estate,…arguably one of the more beautiful estate properties in Solebury. The commanding stone manor house sits prominently in the foreground and is flanked by an equally stately 5 bedroom/4 bathroom stone guest house. As you enter the main entrance, a grand foyer greets you with outstanding millwork in all directions. To the right is the presidential salon…a formal living room with portraits of American presidents, stately chandelier and antique fireplace. On the opposite side of this home is the morning room with built-in coffee station and an informality perfect for gatherings.

The ceiling is an architectural feat of beauty and this magnificent room could be an impressive dining room, if you choose. The adjacent room is far beyond an ordinary chef’s kitchen-beautiful woodworking throughout, large granite counter space, high-end appliances and even a La Cornue wall mounted rotisserie, makes this beyond most high-end kitchens.
