ith Valentine’s Day around the corner, February is a month to celebrate love! This month we chose to feature NY power couples Brandon and Michi Marshall as well as Geoffrey and Margaret Zakarian who embody the spirit that two minds together are better than one.

We had the chance to get up close and personal with NY Jets Wide Receiver Brandon Marshall and his wife Michi Marshall. After being diagnosed with borderline personality disorder Brandon recognized the need to address the prevalence of mental illness that goes undetected due to the stigmas attached to it. Together with the support of his wife they established PROJECT 375 to help promote mental health awareness, eradicate the stigma, and raise funding for treatment- saving one life at a time. Dashing and charismatic Top Chef Geoffrey Zakarian is at the top of his game with new additions to his restaurant empire, as well as a bevy of new TV shows debuting this spring. Like the yin to his yang Margaret and Geoffrey Zakarian are living proof that behind every great man is a great woman who runs the show! We also caught up with the talented young actor Taylor Handley, who stars in APB, FOX TV’s highly anticipated TV drama that makes its debut this February. Fashion is always at the forefront of February with the haute couture shows in Paris setting the stage for the remainder of the Fall Winter 2017 catwalks around the world. In keeping with the theme of Valentine’s Day our fashion editorial was inspired by the lyrics of My Funny Valentine. This month we escaped to gorgeous warm weather destinations around the globe. As the Chinese Lunar New Year falls at the end of January we had a special feature on Hong Kong, Macau, and Guangzhou and showcased the best of these cities as this region prepares to ring in The Year of the Rooster. PINNACLE OF THE PARTY PLANNING INDUSTRY arriette Rose Katz, dubbed by the Wall Street Journal “the queen of top-of-theline social,” has been at the pinnacle of the party planning industry for 38 years. She actually stumbled into the business when she discovered she had an innate knack for hospitality while working in the interior design field, running the New York showroom for a Dallas-based furniture company. They asked her to throw a party as part of “Designers Saturday,” in which major showrooms held events to lure people in. Katz told her bosses that they should do it in a big way, or not at all. They gave her carte blanche. This was in the 1970s. “I did a Texas BBQ for a thousand people in the showroom, and it was such a smash. It was just what the whole industry needed. I served chili and gave out little cactus plants to each guest as they left.” In 1978, she says, no one had ever heard of anything like this. Her bosses loved it, and after that, every time they launched a new line, they asked her to throw a party. Her dim-

By Joe Alexander | With Photographs by Patrick McMullan The Golden Globes George Clooney says the Golden Globes is “the best party in Hollywood.” The secret sauce is that they fearlessly mix copious amounts of champagne with a crew of hard-bodied actors and racilly clad ingénues from film and television with directors, producers, moguls, gossip columnists and stars including Brad Pitt, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, Game of Throne’s Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams. Outrageous things have happened here since 1958, when an antsy Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack spontaneously rushed the stage with their cocktails in hand to take over the show from the startled journalists who were handing out the statuettes. In 1980, Bette Midler mounted the podium, grabbed her breasts and screamed, “I’ll show you a pair of Golden Globes.” I once saw Jack Nicholson moon the ballroom and a dressed-to-thrill Angelina Jolie jump into the pool of the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where this bacchanal is held. Blessedly, the Globes, which could arguably be called TV’s first reality show, has no technical awards, which drags down the Oscar cast year after year. The 1st Golden Globe Awards, was held in January 1944. In 1950 they established an honorary award that went to director Cecil B. DeMille who the award was then named after. Meryl Streep received the honor this year and used her acceptance speech to attack President Trump who returned the favor on Twitter. In 1963, the Miss Golden Globe concept was introduced to hand out the awards. This year Sylvester Stallone’s three daughters Sistine, Scarlet and Sophia shared the honor. onfident’’ and ‘’Swagger’’ ought to have been the two middle names of the noted celebrity chef Geoffrey Zakarian. One can only assume that after more than thirty years as a stalwart of the upper echelons of the fine food industry that, that sort of overwhelming selfconfidence is to be expected I suppose. That bravado was certainly on full display as we sat to speak from his eponymous landmark flagship the imposing Lambs Club restaurant in the heart of NewYork City aka Times Square recently. The Massachusetts raised chef has unquestionably made his mark as one of America’s leading chef restaurateurs known for pairing his classic training and techniques with a seemingly relentless urge to rule and conquer the world of hospitality. He has created some of America’s noted eateries from-- The 44 at The Royalton to the Blue Door at the Delano, Miami Beach to Patroon in New York City. Today, with the dynamic tandem he has forged with his partner and wife Margaret, they continue to build on new properties while maintaining the highest standards for his many well established salons such as the aforementioned The Lambs Club, Georgie and The Garden Bar at the Montage Beverly Hills, the Water Club at Borgata, or the National in Greenwich, Connecticut. This 2017, Zakarian Hospitality will open Point Royal, a fun coastal American restaurant and bar, and its fast casual extension, Counter Point at the Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood, Florida. Add to that, of course, his high-profile presence on Food Network’s Chopped, Cooks vs. Cons, and The Kitchen which all assure that Geoffrey Zakarian will be a constant and relevant media presence for seasons to come. Philanthropy is also at the top of Geoffrey and Margaret’s to do list as they are hosting Our Town’s Art of Food event at Sotheby’s on February 4 to benefit City Harvest where 20 esteemed chefs create masterpieces inspired by artwork for one extraordinary and mouthwatering evening. GEORGE WAYNE - Toque to me Chef Zakarian! Did you ever know that Gwynnie Paltrow once famously said-- ‘’I would rather smoke crack than eat cheese from a tin!’’. GEOFFREY ZAKARIAN - Well, I have never done either but I like where she is going with that. It’s about doing things correctly, and she is very smart. She is a big shot and she is known for saying things in a sort of spectacular fashion. I like Gwyneth. GW-- Are you and your wife Margaret [sitting

beside him] the sort of fastidious foodies who only scramble organic, pastured eggs for breakfast and have liquefied kale for the morning juice? What’s a typical breakfast like for the Zakarian family? GZ- No, we are not like that all actually. We have three young kids and we do breakfast every single morning. Madeline, Anna and George are seven, five and two-years-old and we ask them every night before they go to bed what they want for breakfast the next morning, and so every morning we cook a big feast for them. For me breakfast is the most important thing. We make omelettes, and frittata, avocado toast. Whatever they ask for Daddy makes for them. And breakfast is every morning at 6:30 am sharp. GW- Which is more IN this season...puntarelle or baby parsnip? GZ- Well, puntarelle is really not in season now, but the way the business has been evolving you can get any product even though it is not in season. So for instance, puntarelle is not in season now, but somewhere in the world there is Summer, so for instance, Argentina where they grow great puntarelle, it is in season. So you can pretty much now get anything you want at any time, if you are willing to pay for it. I tend to try and find produce that is pretty much local because that makes much more sense. GW- I ask that question not knowing even what puntarelle is.

show. It happens. I have eaten crickets on ‘’Chopped’’. In Mexico, crickets are a big protein source. Cricket powder is huge in Mexico. GW- You are one of America’s leading culinary swamis. The man known as ‘’the original Iron Chef’’. Give us a quick precis of this man of Armenian heritage. Talk a bit about where this acute passion for food first began? GZ- That’s an easy question because I was born into an environment where food was my family’s life passion. Mum, Dad, aunts and uncles -- all Armenian and they love food. Food is everything in such families and my parents cooked every meal I ever had growing up. By the age of three, I was already a food snob. We were poor, but I ate like a king everyday of the week. GW- When did you first think that you could make a career out of food? GZ- Late in life George, it was late. I was going to get an MBA in Economics at the University of Chicago after my undergraduate degree at the University of Massachusetts and then I went to France for three months because I had never been and I fell in love with the food and culture of France and I said -- ‘’Wow!’’ I want to do this. So I scrapped the MBA and went to study at the CIA [Culinary Institute of America]. And two years later I was working at Le Cirque which [at the time] was the best French restaurant in the country. GW- And your first job at Le Cirque was what?

GZ- Puntarelle is a really beautiful and bitter chicory, kind of like a chick pea that Italians [especially] love. Puntarelle as a dressing with some bracing vinaigrette over anchovies. It’s a big deal for them. GW- Have you ever eaten bison? GZ- I have. And bison is a great, relatively inexpensive meat that is low in fat and cholesterol. It tastes kind of like venison but a bit more dry. I will also add, that it is not one of my favorite animals to eat,

GZ- I was a souffle chef at Le Cirque. Those early days were something else. I just soaked up all the creative energy in that kitchen. It was unbelievable. I came to work early every day and I was always the last to leave. I didn’t want to leave. I just loved it so much. I soaked it all in—everybody’s energy, and picked everyone’s brain and just loved it all. I started it in the souffle department and I wasn’t even getting paid at the time. I was just happy to be working with Chef Alain Sailhac. GW- You spent six years at Le Cirque and then...

GW- What is the strangest, tastiest food you have ever eaten? GZ- Well, I have this show called ‘’Chopped’’ where we eat everything. Contestants get four items and it could be anything from lamb testicles to chicken feet, the craziest stuff and they have to make a tasty meal out of it. ‘’Chopped’’ is a crazy show. So I have to eat a lot of crappy shit [sometimes] on that

GZ- I left to become the Chef-de-Cuisine at the newly then renovated and re-launched21 Club. I was there for 2 1/2 years and then I left to go and open The Restaurant 44 at the Royalton Hotel. GW- And that, as far as I am concerned, was the moment that catapulted your career. When Ian Schrager asked you to create The Restaurant 44 at

The Royalton. Your life truly changed forever. GZ- Jeffrey Chodorow held the lease and I was there helping and after he went to jail I then took over the lease with Bryan McNally and we became partners. I stayed there for seven years and in between we went down an opened The Blue Door at the Delano in March of 1995. GW- Aaah,,, the iconic restaurant at the Delano which back in its heyday was America’s supreme face-place. GZ-- It was amazing..yes it was. Ian Schrager not only created the original boutique hotel but he also re-created Miami Beach and that began with The Delano. GW- Working with a great visionary like Ian Schrager.... GZ-- Just incredible! We had 1,100 people clamoring to get into that restaurant on the very first day we were open for business. It was just gorgeous and sexy and the world had never seen anything like it. GW- What was that like working with Ian? GZ- Well, that’s all I did-- work! He is a lunatic like I am but he is a visionary and a complete perfectionist. I learnt that from Ian and Sirio Maccioni...it’s all about the details. I mean, Ian used to complain about the hot chocolate if it wasn’t done just right! GW- Would you say Ian Schrager was integral to your trajectory? GZ- He wasn’t the only one. The first was Alain Sailhac, then Daniel Boulud and yes Ian Schrager. GW- We are doing this interview right here at what is Anna Wintour’s favorite booth at the gorgeous Lambs Club. This used to be ‘’the Conde Nast commissary’’’ before The ‘’Conde Nasties’’ all moved down to One World Trade Center. Now, today their new commissary is the Odeon. You must miss the old Conde Nast crowd. GZ- They still come here. The Conde crowd still comes back. Now it’s become the home of the HBO crowd. GW- Anna still comes and what does she eat? GZ- People think that Anna Wintour doesn’t eat

GW-You certainly have your plate full what with the many restaurants from NYC to Connecticut to Beverly Hills. Where do you want to set up shop next? Anguilla? Anguilla is the-next-St. Barths and a serious foodie haven! Zakarian Hospitality ought to consider Anguilla for a future outpost. GZ- I have a new property opening in Hollywood, Florida at The Diplomat Beach Resort but if you want to help us with Anguilla, by all means. I love Anguilla. GW- But how do you maintain the purity of your brand when you have so many satellites of your brand. How can you really manage quality and control. And all these TV shows! GZ- I have been a chef for almost thirty years and TV found me. It came on my plate and it has been very good for us. GW- Yes, food show culture which is so huge now and which you are very much a part of... GZ- And it is very educational. GW- Yes and at that the same time you have so many restaurants all over America and more coming. How do you manage? How can all this not dilute your brand? How do you manage to keep all this in check? GZ- There are many others who have fifty, sixty restaurants. We don’t have that. We do restaurants that we think matter and are important. We have a great team in place. Margaret and I work in tandem and we spend quality time keeping it all in check and I want more. I have swag bro.

am developing something exciting for the Upper East Side. I think that is a neighborhood that needs re-discovering again, so I want to do something amazing on the Upper East Side.

GW- Last question...sesame rye or sesame tahini... the preferred artisanal bread?

GW- I like that.

GW- You always did. What is exciting you for 2017?

GZ- Nobody is up there and I want to do something fresh on the Upper East Side. I am very bullish on New York.

here’s an old saying where the grass is always greener-meaning that by comparison on the surface another person’s life seems better than yours. However two primary colors are needed to create green-just as in life individuals were created with imperfections and were not meant to be whole until joining with their symbiotic partner to make them a better person. A perfect example of this deep symbiotic connection is the relationship between Michi and Brandon Marshall. Though they seem to have everything they want in life- the fame, the money, the glory, this picture of perfection was shattered in 2011 when Brandon Marshall was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. Since seeking treatment his life has changed. With the loving support of his wife and family he has turned his life around. Recognizing the stigma attached to this often undiagnosed disease, the Marshalls are using their celebrity to eradicate the stigma and provide Youth Mental Health First Aid trainings to teachers, clinicians, parents, and more through their non-profit, PROJECT 375.

RM: You seem like a very loving couple. How did you meet and what is your secret to making your marriage work? MM: That is a loaded question. We actually met during my junior year of college. I was walking across campus and Brandon saw me with one of his friends, Darcy Johnson, and told him, ‘That girl is going to be my wife.’ A couple of days later, we crossed paths and he said “Hi, nice to meet you. Can I be your friend?” I responded, “Eh no,” because at the time I had a boyfriend and I knew he played football and felt that this was just about my looks. Ever since then whenever I saw him on campus I’d say, “Hi friend.” Even to this day I say, “I love you, friend.” But the discrepancy with his version is that he always says that I was walking across campus in heels, but I was in flats. In his mind he thinks I was struggling across campus in six inch heels! We’ve been married for six years and the secret to a good marriage is hard work. Like anything you want to be good at, you have to invest the time and effort. You have to love the person for who they are and

who they are not and you can’t turn somebody into something which you want them to be. Where he has strengths, I may not. And where I have strengths he may not. And that’s how we’re able to be one. BM: On campus, when I was walking to the student union I saw this beautiful and interesting girl in jeans and high heels. I stopped to talk to her and that’s where it started. People have to understand that married relationships are no different than a career. The mistake a lot of couples make is that they put a lot of effort into their careers, but not the same effort into their relationships. I think that’s why we see a lot of broken homes and failed relationships. RM: How do you complement each other? MM: I’m super organized to the point where it can drive somebody absolutely insane, but Brandon has a laissez faire attitude with organization. He tends to misplace things, his closet is disheveled

but I’m able to help him in those areas. I can find what he’s looking for 99% of the time. Brandon is more outgoing than I am. I am a little bit more of an introvert. He’s able to talk to people and feel the room whereas I like to sit back a little bit and observe. I’m extremely analytical and he’s very strategic. Sometimes it’s a real competition because we think about things in a completely different way, but it’s also fun. It’s a good thing when you can balance each other out in different areas of life. BM: The biggest thing we’ve noticed about each other is that we balance each other out. Michi is really analytical and works at the micro level while I work at the macro level. RM: How did having children change both of your lives? MM: It changed a great deal. You think about things differently. I actually think more now about psychology than I did before having children. I see how the environment we created at home affects them as they are going through different stages in their lives from the people that we bring in to the routines. Brandon has changed his perspective a great deal as well, because in the back of his mind when he’s televised on the field he knows that his children could be watching him, and he wants to be a role model for them. Brandon’s not Brandon Marshall at home. He is daddy to them and friend number one to me, and that’s his skill. He had to learn how to do that. It’s not something people learn overnight. Even when he is away for a game, we Facetime and he is present with his family. When our children grow up they will remember that they were his number one priority at every stage of his career. RM: You lived most of your life without knowing that you had an illness. What was it like when you were diagnosed? BM: Some studies have shown that we have the first break at the ages of 18, 22, or 23. So for me I always felt that I was healthy. But at the time I was diagnosed there were so many things that happened in my life at once. I was dealing with my career and relationships that changed me from a healthy person to one with borderline personality disorder. When you don’t deal with it, it’s undetected and the problem gets worse. That’s when I found myself at McLean Hospital where I did a clinical evaluation to see if I was even capable of change. Through this neurological test I found out, luckily, that I was capable of

change, because some people are not because of the way their brain is blocked. During the three months in an out-patient program I learned a lot about how my brain works and how it processes things. MM: Any mental health issue is challenging, but Brandon’s was very challenging because he was unaware of his illness. Once he was diagnosed he was able to understand and accept what he was dealing with, how to cope with it, and determine which skills he needed to learn. Being able to understand those things was like night and day. He was more present, more mindful, and was able to recognize some of the situations that might be upsetting and trigger an onset. He was able to reflect on it and bring himself back to baseline more quickly than before. If you’re unaware that something is happening, you can’t really stop it.

RM: Give us an example of how your brain works vs. somebody else’s brain. BM: I don’t do well with grey situations. I only think in black and white, that’s one of the criteria of being diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. So, I had to go through Mentalization therapy, which is a group therapy to learn how to live in the grey and process things. Now, when I find myself thinking in black and white I automatically use the skills and tools that I learned in rehabilitation to be able to navigate through whatever I’m going through. RM: How does your diagnosis affect you on the field? BM: With football there comes a point where you figure out who you are and what your strengths and weaknesses are. One of my weaknesses is being in a toxic and exhausting environment, which is what football is, it’s like walking into a trap every day. It’s challenging but I know how to manage and deal with it.

went to McLean Hospital. We were trying to figure out where he needed the most help and what could benefit him the most. The pain that he was in could not necessarily have been avoided but the blow could have been a little less if it was detected sooner. And we decided very early on that we wanted to help people who may not have the resources or understand how important psychology is. This is not something to be ashamed of, not something to hide, nor something that stigmatizes, and we wanted to put a face to it and humanize mental health. We know the narrative of mental health is a little rough when we talk about it but we want to let people know that they’re not alone. One in four people have a mental health issue. But this also affects all of the loved ones around that person- it affects everyone.

RM: What do you like to do as a family?

RM: What are some of PROJECT 375’s recent initiatives?

MM: Sushi. Nobu in New York is one of our favorite restaurants. Our favorite foods? Mine are chicken wings and French fries. And his will probably be the same or spaghetti.

MM: A wife of Brandon’s friend asked him to come to speak to some kids. She works with kids with behavioral issues in school. And I remember when he came home he was in tears, because some of the kids he spoke with were 9 and 10 years old contemplating suicide and dealing with bullying and heavy issues. We decided we were going to focus on children. And that’s how our project evolved and became what it is. We really want to make the most impact on the lives of children to be proactive instead of being reactive. BM: When we first started our work, the narratives were very different and significantly more negative. The conversation wasn’t where it needed to be, and within five years it’s become an everyday topic now. We want a place to put faces to it and we want to be one of the faces to break down the stigma. That’s a big accomplishment not only for PROJECT 375 but also for the mental health community. We feel that our team has done an amazing job of making sure that we’re at the forefront of that conversation.

RM: Whose idea was it to establish PROJECT 375?

RM: Who are you rooting for to go to the Super Bowl?

MM: It was actually both of ours. I have a background in psychology and I worked in the health field right after college. This is an area that I’ve been involved in for a very long time. My mother has her PhD in clinical psychology. I grew up understanding how important the psychology of the mind is and when Brandon was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder due to some incidences in his career, he

BM: Nobody. It’s tough because, I’m a player so I’m not rooting for any teams. Since I’m from Pittsburgh which has a culture of being football crazy, everything is about the Steelers. A win by the Steelers can really boost the city and community so if I don’t have a chance to play in the playoffs in the Super bowl, I am always rooting for the Steelers and Pittsburgh.

MM: We love playing games and watching movies, Brandon’s favorite movie is Life with Martin Lawrence and Eddie Murphy. He likes comedies but I like horror movies and mysteries which fascinate me because of my background in psychology. Silence of the Lambs is the ultimate movie for me. We also like competitive games such as bowling. He plays chess, all the time, but since I don’t understand chess, I won’t play with him. I play a crime scene game where you find clues and the suspect. Along with psychology, crime scene investigation, profiling and criminal profiling, I like to play the forensic psychologist. RM: What are your favorite foods?

RM: Do you prefer living in Brooklyn or Miami? MM: I prefer New York in the winter or the fall. New York is New York. I love the energy, the motivation, the fashion, the people, the culture you see here, there’s really no comparison. But Miami has the weather. BM: The thing that we love about Brooklyn is that we have space down here, New York is everything. That’s who we are. We’re that kind of people- we’re blue collar, we’re tough, and we think that New York City exemplifies all of those things and much more. We love it, there are so many different people and the culture is amazing. You walk down the street and you can see four or five different ethnicities, which is awesome, especially for our children. RM: What do you want to do when you retire? BM: I’m already doing it. I am on a show on Showtime, and also growing PROJECT 375 and actively bridging the gap in the mental health community. MM: Whether it’s television or film I’m excited to watch my partner evolve. We love New York and New York has been so good to us, so hopefully we will get to stay here. And I’m hoping to start a new career in television as well. Project375.org

“But we are not trying to reinvent the wheel. This is still a police procedure — we are trying to entertain the ‘what if’ concept of a billionaire acquiring this district after being fed up with crime on streets. Someone who wants to make his city a safe place just enhances the drama. Still it does raise questions.”

Says the well-chiseled actor, “Of course, this is a ‘what if’ concept but it has a basis in fact. Producer David Slack [who has since left the show] found a story in the New York Times about a similar situation in New Orleans. This guy said, ‘I have this money and can make a difference.’ We never really talked about what if the government stopped

When Gideon Reeves comes out and acquires the district he outfits each cop with the best tech his corporation produces to make the streets a safer place. My character is a loyal protector, a lone wolf dedicated to his job, and in his backstory he has had a bleak experience. But he’s had the best military training. He’s seen stuff that would mess most people up and lives two lives as a civilian and an ex-military but this job is all he’s really got, so he’s living in the middle.” Handley didn’t have to really do a lot of physical preparation for the role, since as he says, “If you’re always ready then you don’t need to get ready. I like to have a strong physical body and be strong mentally and spiritually as well. I try to keep everything in balance in life, I stay in shape so I can be in shape.” A veteran of the summer stock, Handley began acting at the early age of eight. He had developed an impressive list of credits in both film and television.

But he made his mark primarily in such series as The OC and Vegas where he starred as veteran lead Dennis Quaid’s difficult yet charming son Dixon Lamb. His father, Sheriff Ralph Lamb, loves his son but doesn’t always trust his judgement. Yet when it comes to trust, Handley not only trusted his experience working alongside such a legendary actor but was inspired by him. As Handley added, “Dennis Quaid… Wow, what can I say. My wife and I were driving around recently and we were talking about his new movie that we wanted to see- A Dog’s Purpose.” And we both thought, he’s like a national treasure. He is the nicest person to work with. I was so glad I did Vegas, it was great. I couldn’t have had a better number one to work with he’s so pleasant, prepared and was great with me. I was young guy trying to make my way and he was really helpful sending me in the right direction.” Handley has also racked up experience in films such as The Standard, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, Zerophilia and September Dawn. But he was also in the late Curtis Hanson’s surfing chronicle Chasing Mavericks based on a true story, where he got to work with this noted filmmaker who made the legendary film, LA Confidential. Commenting on his experience with Hanson, he said, “We lost a great one there. I’m really sorry about his passing. I am so glad to have worked with him. And the film was close to my heart since I’m a Californian and a surfer as well. One of the best experience I had doing it” While Handley has such roots, he’s learning to make Chicago a great contemporary home and enjoys its sight and tastes. Though that may be true, the truth is that there are plenty of affordable homes under a million dollars that are value plays. Nest Seekers power broker John Brady is one of the rare finds you will find in the area. Tapping into his vast knowledge of the Hamptons he gets homes sold in record time, finds the needle in the haystack for his buyers and can get you the best value home no matter your price range. Here Resident speaks with John Brady to get his advice on buying and selling in the Hamptons in 2017. When is the best time to buy in the Hamptons? This is a destination market so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easier during the winter to buy and get ready for the summer. During last two weeks of august the market dries out. What do you think about the market? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going through another correction, most buyers are aware of it due to technology being at their fingertips. Do you think a lot of homes are overvalued? If you go from Westhampton to Montauk there are about 2458 homes for sale. Right now, we have two to three years of inventory, even with an av-

erage of 105 sales a month in the entire Hamptons region. If you look at what actually sold in the past 90 days only 4.2% of the homes are actually selling. But this area is so specific. You can have a house that’s $300K on a street that is not so great and behind it a house can be listed for $2M. You have to know the area so well to make those decisions. You can’t just rely on a google map, which is why it’s so important to work with people that actually know the area in and out. Flipping can be done; I’ve done a lot of flips for a lot of investors but it just has to be the right product, the right location, the right terms, so the stars have to align; right now with all of this oversupply, it definitely affects people’s ability and confidence in buying and investing. Though you do see a market turn every six or seven years.

What do you think makes you successful in the Hamptons? I would say because I have an actual 21 point plan and schedule that holds me accountable to the things that I promised that I’m going to do. It’s definitely a buyers’ market; it will continue to be a tough time for sellers just because of the very same reason; there are so many more options to choose from.

REAL ESTATE SHOULD BE ON MILLENIALS’ RADAR

Millennials epitomize a culture raised on technology that provides instant communication, instant feedback, instant gratification, and a limitless network of business and social contacts. Faced with an unending array of choice and possibility, and access to ever-improving technology and cuttingedge gadgetry, is it any wonder that this age cohort prefers to rent rather than buy, to be flexible in location and type of dwelling as it pursues myriad and fluctuating interests? Why shouldn’t millennials favor vibrant life experiences over stability and predictability?

he little house with the gabled windows and white picket fence might not be the dream of the next generation. But perhaps it should be. For baby boomers, home ownership was a yardstick for success; accordingly, they now inhabit some 32 million of the nation’s homes. But for the 80 million millennials, who number almost as many as the post-war boomers, buying a home may not have the same appeal. To be fair, part of the reason millennials may delay the purchase of a home is due to the astronomical burden of student loan debt, which can hamper the debt-to-income calculation required by mortgage lenders. And, millennials – also called the boomerangs – often are finding lodging back at their parents’ homes as they search for employment. Renting, too, means that they are free to move from city to city in pursuit of the best jobs. Partly, though, the differing aspirations can be explained by upbringing.

ers should consider not just the purchase price and mortgage on a home, but property taxes, insurance, maintenance, utilities and repairs. Potential buyers will likely face more obstacles in the purchase process than boomers once did. Since the housing market imploded in 2008, lenders now have stricter processes for approving mortgages. Exhaustive paperwork and documentation, including income filings and tax statements, will be required, as will proof of savings to at least temporarily cover mortgage payments in the event of a loss of income.

According to one self-made millionaire and financial guru, not investing in real estate is the single biggest blunder millennials will make vis-à-vis their wealth. That opinion is supported by statistics that show the wealth of homeowners is 31 to 46 times greater than those who rent. And data from the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Finances shows that median homeowners had nearly $200,000 in net worth versus the median renter who had just over $5,000, with the average value of homes set at $170,000.

Mortgage rates have risen over the last few months with a 30-year fixed rate recently reaching 4.32 percent, the highest level since 2014, and economists predicting that the rates will continue to rise. According to the National Association of Realtors, the inventory of homes is dwindling, with fewer than two million homes on the market as of last November – almost ten percent less than a year earlier. The Association says that buyers can expect more competition for homes, especially in more affordable markets.

It comes down to simple math: an average $1,500 per month over 30 years totals well over half a million dollars. For high-ticket areas like New York City, where rents are rising, that number skyrockets. For some, it may be better to invest that money on a mortgage and, by retirement, own the property.

Baby boomers who are ready to downsize are scooping up many of the nations’ entry-level homes, from single-story ranches in family-friendly gated communities to modern flats and condos designed for young professionals. So millennials who want to jump into the real estate market shouldn’t wait too long.

The important thing is to get into the real estate market as a first-time buyer, even if the house is small or needs renovations and isn’t a “dream home.”

FINE DINING Moroccan wine savoir-faire goes way back. First introduced more than 2,500 years ago, Moroccan vines then played an important role in Europe’s wine industry, when it gave a new breath of life to western production and consumption, following the ravage of phylloxera, a pest that devastated the majority of European vines. Over the years, the country evolved into a wine player of its own, thanks to the diversity and richness of its soils and terroirs, being surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean and the Atlas Mountains. Morocco also owes a lot of its success to Chergui, an eastern wind that envelops the country twice or three times a year and helps grapes ripen faster to produce highly fruity and light wine. So who do we thank for the wine? A winery stands out in particular: Domaine Ouled Thaleb, established in 1923 and located on the coastal region of Zenata, which bears the renowned AOG status (Guaranteed Origin of Appellation). The oldest functioning winery in Morocco, it perfectly illustrates the renewal of the Moroccan wine world, with 8 million bottles produced per year. Located 19 miles north of Casablanca, it operates on 5,000 acres of land, always with the most respect for nature: no herbicide or chemicals are ever used and the grapes are entirely hand-harvested. Among the grapes grown in Morocco and at Ouled Thaleb are those we drink daily in America, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Syrah. Yet, Morocco is home to indigenous grapes that generate equally fine wines, among which Faranah, which produces fresh, fruit-forward and floral wines. It’s like sunshine in a glass, embodying the authenticity and uniqueness of Moroccan terroirs. History, food and wine – so, what are you waiting for?

THE CUBANO SANDWICH A Foodies’ Favorite at A.G. Kitchen By Elizabeth Darwen

elebrity chef Alex Garcia does more than prepare the masterfully crafted recipes at popular New York City restaurant, A.G. Kitchen located at 296 Columbus Avenue between 72nd and 73rd streets. The Nuevo Latino comfort cuisines are a true reflection of his personality and, namely, influenced by his Cuban heritage. Specifically, the Cubano Sandwich, which has earned its deserved title as the best in NYC after Alex Garcia and partner Chef Douglas Rodrigues introduced it in the nineties. The Cubano Sandwich is a pressed pork and ham panini layered with pickles, Swiss cheese and mustard. Alex Garcia has perfected this delicacy by replacing the traditional Cuban bread with a sweeter, egg-based bread which lends to the flavor of the Cubano Sandwich. After topping each half of the bread with the flavorful ingredients, Garcia grills the sandwich halves facedown to warm the meat and the inside of the bread. Next, both halves are joined together, and each side of the sandwich is then grilled to add a toasty crunch. Despite the name, the Cubano Sandwich actually originated in Tampa, Florida in the 1900s where it was the preferred meal amongst Cuban immigrant field workers. Today, the toasted sandwich has gained popularity in New York thanks to Alex Garcia and Douglas Rodriguez. They work together to expand the influence of Latin culture and cuisine throughout the United States. Now that the U.S. has restored its relationship with Cuba, and as interest in Cuban culture grows, this is sure to be accomplished sooner than later. About A.G. Perhaps my favorite design of the hotel is their three-tiered infinity pools, each with a different water temperature. Better yet, two pools have swim-up bars and one pool has a swim-up Cevicheria. As such, the culinary scene here is a

foodie’s nirvana. With six fine-dining restaurants, an all-day poolside restaurant (with an expansive buffet for breakfast and fresh ceviche for lunch), and a 24-hour room service menu, you’ll never be out of options for a meal. The resort’s signature restaurant, Cocina de Autor, under the direction of two-star Michelin Dutch chef, Sidney Schutte, offers a tasting menu while Frida serves authentic Mexican dishes. Head over to Piaf for sophisticated French cuisine or try Lucca to satisfy your pasta craving. The upscale Velas 10 restaurant serves seafood and steak while Cabrilla offers just seafood. Top off the evening at Koi, their sexy lounge where you’ll be sipping handcrafted cocktails while listening to hot salsa and chart-topping beats. Don’t worry if you over-indulged in the evening, just head over to their fitness center or take a rooftop yoga class in the morning. Then, you’ll be ready to start the party all over again. For the kids, the resort not only allows children but also welcomes them with open arms. There is a kid’s club activity program and a tricked-out teen’s center with everything from foosball, air hockey and a pool table to Wii, PS3 and a disco-inspired dance floor complete with Karaoke, enough to make any adult a bit jealous. Yeah, I know I’m really bad with faces but I swear the guy looks like some long lost cousin of Tony Blair.” Annoyed by my insistence, my fiancé finished pouring the Black Magic sauce on her the red tuna sashimi and, with resignation bordering on disdain, panned her head past the figure in question as though she were merely intending to get a glimpse of the full moon hovering beyond his table. “Well, you really do have bad eyes,” she noted while dabbing at the exquisite wakame salad accompanying her dish. “He doesn’t look a bit like Tony Blair. He is Tony Blair.” The matter settled, my unimpressed Nordic companion returned to sipping a delightful Israeli Chardonnay – one whose buttery flavor, mineral flintiness and hint of lime perfectly piqued the sashimi’s subtle tones. But what was Blair doing here at the RitzCarlton’s Herbert Samuel restaurant in Herzliya? Or, for that matter, why was he in Israel? Slightly nonplussed by my fiancé’s blasé response, I quickly busied myself with the Salmon tartar, a tantalizingly fresh and smartly seasoned dish that

arrived moored against green apple, wasabi, yuzu and fennel vinaigrette. Though I had hardly taken notice of the seemingly benign little fellow with whom Tony had been sitting, I suddenly couldn’t shake the suspicion that he looked familiar. More poignantly, that I had seen him in the Gatekeepers - a documentary on the Shin Bet. At least, that’s the explanation my action-starved mind longed for. Be that as it may, the arrival of the waiter put a pause to my musings. Artichoke barigoute and Tomatoes Salad ‘Herbert Samuel,’ a house specialty, were set before us. They were accompanied by a marvelously earthy regional wine – one which my fiancé rolled, swished, swallowed and approved. In addition to how well the remoulade roasted peppers and pangrattato played off the seared artichokes, the purportedly simple Tomatoes Salad tasted mind-bogglingly rich. Indulging in the starters, my fiancé turned to me bemused, “So this is what Kosher food is like? Rumor has it that -” Rumors. Yes, that was it. The rock band Tony

Blair had belonged to in his youth. Ugly Rumours. That was the name I had been trying to remember. As for Kosher food. Rumor had it right. No, this wasn’t what Kosher tastes like. This was what the Herbert Samuel tastes like. On the few earlier occasions when I had gone to an explicitly kosher restaurant – always as a concession to an observant relative or friend – the food could at best be described as homey and wholesome. But Herbert Samuel was different. It was wellhoned culinary art with an uncompromising approach to ingredients. Maximizing on local produce, the establishment employed highly skilled chefs to create the paramount in Mediterranean fusion cuisine. And the Mediterranean Wild Sea Bass and Baby Red Snapper that now arrived at our table were proof positive. Yet again, an astonishing selection of boutique wine had been recommended by the sommelier. The dishes and complementary wine were working their magic. As my fiancé took a bite of the Baby Red Snapper and baby fennels bathing in a unique pastis and tomatoes sauce, a smile erupted on her face, leaving nothing but dimples and intensely glowing eyes in its wake. I grabbed my phone to immortalize the moment and began

ESCAPES framing the shot. But no sooner had I set up than the rebuke arrived. “Very inconspicuous,” announced my fiancé, “You might as well stand on the table and yell ‘Hey Tony, over here.” Caught. She noticed me arrange the angle to include Blair. “He’ll hear,” I whispered louder than intended while nervously jostling the plates. Defeat. We now had the attention of the adjacent tables. My partner glared. Though slightly flustered, I couldn’t help but notice the remarkable texture of the grilled fillet I’d been chewing on. The tomato saffron sauce together with the Swiss chard enhanced the flavors of the seabass while imbuing it with nuance. Once again, we were absorbed in the magnificence of the meal, sharing and switching dishes between us. Har Braha, a tahini sorbet with espresso and sesame, arrived in the company of Madame Pavlova, a meringue adrift on crème anglaise with buoying berry and mango. The exquisite dessert duo elicited the type of orgasmic sound from my companion that immortalized the rom-com line, “I’ll have what she’s having.” Needless to say, it was at this point Tony Blair, unexpectedly, stopped by our table. Despite the voice in my head greeting him with the words, ‘Hey aren’t you the guy from the Ugly Rumours,’ what I knocked out instead was something on the lines of it being a privilege (which it was). Blair seemed equally befuddled since he was under the misapprehension that he should know me and we’d met somewhere earlier. Though his

colleague paced impatiently, Blair asked if we’d enjoyed our dinner. Exchanging a host of superlatives, it was evident that both our parties found the restaurant equally praiseworthy. Clearly, being out of the public eye had its perks. Blair could overtly indulge his gastronomic fancies without fear of appearing out of touch with the “common man.” Returning to our suite at the Ritz-Carlton, Herzliya, I plugged my Ipod into the docking station and put on a Jazz compilation. Quaintly enough, it contained NY-based Israeli musicians like Rotem Sivan and Ronen Itzik. Next, we headed onto our private deck balcony overlooking Israel’s largest and most entrancing Marina. As romantic as the Mediterranean seaside was, it didn’t take long to discover the benefits of a king sized bed. We also slept well. Waking early, I downed an espresso in the Suite’s

kitchen and headed for the 24-hour state-of-theart gym (complete with ocean-view). Upon returning, I showered off while my fiancé opted for the ellipse bathtub, dousing herself in complimentary Asprey products. After a long seaside stroll, we took to the hotel’s breathtaking rooftop pool for cocktails. Next, we made for the Spa, jumping from Turkish Hammam to Swedish Sauna. My fiancé completed the process at the Shiseido treatment center with the renowned Dead Sea deep revival salt scrub and mud wrap. That night, after hitting Tel Aviv – only 15 minutes by cab - we stood on our suite’s balcony in robe and slippers, drinking in the view one final time. “There, look” said my fiancé facetiously, “maybe it’s me but don’t those stars reflected on the water look like long lost cousins to the ones in the sky?” Embracing her as she giggled, we toasted Tony Blair. The moon’s swollen form floated on the water, quivering in time to a sailboat that rocked by its side. Radiant, I thought. Brighter and closer than the one that lights the sky. Now, after an extensive multi-million renovation, the opulence and elegance of the original structure has been recaptured; the once 1,090 room hotel houses only 172 guest rooms, luxury business offices, upscale restaurants and retailers, spa and salon, and adjacent in the same complex, a Sporting Club. Checking into The Hyatt at The Bellevue was easy, as the friendly staff were most welcoming. Albeit small, the lobby appeared grand, featuring marble columns and floors. Walking through hallways, the rich history of the hotel was felt. Light fixtures by Thomas Edison, stained glass by Tiffany, and chandeliers by Lalique, are appointments that still adorn from its original interior, while the décor of each floor is represented by a different local theater, with all artwork created by

the hands of area artists. As a nod to the fashion of the era in which they were built, guest room hallways had been built extra wide to accommodate the grandeur of hoop skirts. Guest rooms recently underwent additional renovations, each now with the modernity of flat-panel TVs and sleek bathrooms. Beneath the high ceilings that emphasize each room’s spaciousness, furnishings are luxurious and comfortable.

CATE BLANCHETT & MORE ON STAGE By Barry Bassis

ixteen years after Anton Chekhov’s death, an untitled manuscript was found, a draft of a five-hour play written while he was still a student. Various playwrights have tried to adapt the unwieldy work, such as Michael Frayn’s “Wild Honey,” which failed on Broadway in 1986 despite the presence of Ian McKellan. A new version from Sydney Theater Company, “The Present” by Andrew Upton, has arrived, starring his wife, Cate Blanchett, and she is the main attraction. Blanchett plays Anna Petrovna, a widowed landowner throwing a party for her 40th birthday and Richard Roxburgh is Mikhail Platonov (a skirt-chasing schoolmaster). Upton updated the text to the late 1980’s, which provides the occasion for rock and roll dancing along with the excessive smoking and drinking. As in later Chekhov works, there are bored aristocrats and guns brandished. Blanchett is as mesmerizing as ever, but, dragging on for three hours, “The Present” doesn’t have much of a future. Roxburgh’s Platonov is less animated than McKellan’s in the Frayn version but the question again arose as to why all the women find him so attractive. “A Bronx Tale” was first performed as a one-man show, written by and starring Chazz Palminteri. He later appeared in the film version along with Robert De Niro, who directed it. Now the tale is an engaging Broadway

The show has a talented cast (not only the two Calogeros but also Nick Cordero as his hood/mentor Sonny, Richard H. Blake as Calogero’s father and Ariana DeBose as Jane (the love interest). The appealing songs are by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater. Sergio Trujillo supplied the energetic choreography and Beowulf Boritt the sets. While “A Bronx Tale” may not be in the same class as “West Side Story” or “Jersey Boys” (with which it has been compared), it provides an entertaining evening. The New York City Opera is back, in the Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center, with a delightful production of “Candide.” Leonard Bernstein’s score is one of the glories of our musical theater, starting with the sparkling overture, ending with ““Make Our Garden Grow” and featuring the dazzling “Glitter and Be Gay” in between.

“Not that Jewish” is Monica Piper’s one woman show about her life and career. A stand-up comic, she became a writer for several television comedy shows and then the writer and producer for the children’s show “Rugrats,” for which she won an Emmy Award. The title comes from a taunt by a neighbor about the fact that Piper’s family didn’t go to a synagogue on Saturdays. Her family would get dressed up on High Holy Days and stand outside their building so that it would appear that they went to services. Piper speaks affectionately about her parents and her father’s influence on her development as a humorist. Under the direction of Mark Waldrop, Piper gracefully segues from the comic to the dramatic. She had a bout with cancer and, as a single woman, adopted a son. At the end of the 90 minute “Not that Jewish,” the audience feels it has spent time with a witty and thoroughly likeable woman.

As the inauguration of our new president promises to take us into unchartered territory, I pondered on how this month’s selection could reflect the unknown of the coming months. Many books finding their way to bookstores fail to find their way to readers, and this is where a perceptive book review can help. This month’s selection offers a wide range of topics. We have a first timer riding side by side with worldwide spiritual celebrities, and, in between, uncanny voices of the present.

If you go down the street and ask anyone who is David Morrell, chances are you will be met with a blank stare. And yet, there is not a soul on earth who does not Rambo, the character Morrell created more than 45 years ago. In “Ruler of the Night,” Morrell spruces up a dormant icon of the 19th century British literature, the troubled soul, Thomas de Quincey, here turned detective. De Quincey is famous for writing “Confession of An Opium Eater,” a substance himself relied on to soothe his aching soul. Quite à propos in our age of cannabis legalization.

A major contradiction lies at the heart of Western societies. The constant pressure towards the quest for happiness. It is no secret that the pressure to be happy creates more anxiety than happiness. Tons of books from fields as varied as sociologies, psychology or self-help, have attempted to deal with this issue. Often providing short-time relief with Band-aid remedies, which, as their names indicate, never last over time. Even before pre-Socratic thinkers it was known that happiness never comes from achievement or success, or wealth, or even fame for that matter. And yet, our Western societies keep on promoting these values, with disastrous results on its members. Depression, neurosis, feeling of inadequacies, feeding an endless loop of existential FOMO, and so on, abound around us.

Besides the inviting silky quality of the paper, this volume from the Library of America offers an impressive collection of articles, essays, personal stories, and declassified documents from WWI, from both participants and observers. The volume aims at providing a never-before kaleidoscope view of the “never again” war, that is the French-German butchery which supposedly was going to be the war that ends all wars.

If you wonder what “Apocalypse now, “The Godfather,” and “The English Patient,” have in common, you may scratch your head for a while. Yes, they are all films. Congratulations. But think harder? The first two films would have been easy to guess, but when introducing the third title, the Kubrick-Coppola connection falls apart. The connection is what this engaging little book, half memoir half critical conversation, that Lawrence Weschler wrote with bravado, is about. Its subject? The celebration of the great Walter Murch, the nine-time nominee for the Academy Award and threetime its winner. Murch was much more than a sound and film editor. Listen careful Lucas’s very first film, “THX 1138,” and you will understand that at the time of its release, the soundtrack was destined to contribute to its masterpiece status.

At “Books du Jour,” we pay special attention to first-timers. They are an important step to the continuity of the book business. Reviewing established authors calls for a safe stance. Taking risks on new voices entail careful scrutiny and measured endorsement. But most often than not, intuition and insight rarely betray. K. J. Howe is one of those safe bets. You know upon reading the first chapters of her novel, “Freedom Broker,” that you are in the presence of an enormous potential. The writing is brisk, the tone confident, and the story not only eye-popping original but also riveting. It is one of those (forgive the cliché) can’t-put-downs as you get enmeshed in the world of K&R. K&R said you? Yes, indeed, which stands for Kidnap and Rescue (though Ransom could have worked). K &R is not an agency or an LLP, but the world revolving around a professional elite dealing with the kidnapping of hostages (estimated at 40,000 a year) and their rescue operations.

“Ruler of the Night” is first and foremost a locked-room mystery, where a crime is committed in a train compartment even though no one, but the victim, has access to it. The setup reminds at once of Agatha Christie’s Orient Express. De Quincey happens to be in the train when the crime occurs, and he sets up to find the murderer. But unlike in Christie’s, the “Ruler of the Night” carries a strong metaphor. It is not simply the darkness of the murderer. The title also evokes the monstrous machine that De Quincey perceived as a degradation of humanity. The invention of the train itself, which was to transform the fabric of societies beyond recognition. The shrinking of time and space, which ultimately gave birth to the British Empire. An achievement accomplished not without substantial numbers of victims along the way. The attraction, beside the plot, here is the prose itself. More layered than many of his peers’, Morrell’s prose tastes of velvet and crimson. The inescapable texture of Victorian era where most horrific murders took place. One can touch both Baudelaire’s flâneur who wanders aimless through Paris’s streets, and E. A. Poe’s bedroom drama in the “Purloin Letter.” Simply addictive.

“The Book of Joy,” is one of these timeless books that aims at cutting straight through the glut of daily self-pressured drives and bad self-talk. Written by the Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama, with Doug Abrams, “The Book of Joy,” details their conversations, which took place over a one-week period in Dharamsala, India. The goal of the book, beyond reuniting the two spiritual leaders, was to teach the world that the quest for happiness is precisely a futile endeavor, because ephemeral. They profess instead to rely on joy, at any moment in life. Especially in time of tragedy and great suffering. Both of them are living proofs having witnessed countless atrocities. “Every tragic situation can become an opportunity.” Abram’s own Eastern interest translates the teaching into accessible lessons. The message is clear and easily absorbed. But like all disciplines, mastery requires a daily practice. No way around it.

I can only imagine the headaches A. Scott Berg, the supreme editor of the book, must have experienced to decide what to include and exclude. The wealth of the materials is just staggering, spanning the beginning of the war to the ratification of the infamous “Versailles Treaty.” Lots of names will be recognizable to the modern readers, Edith Wharton, John Reed (who proceeded to go to Russia), Willa Cather, W.E.B Dubois, and of course Woodrow Wilson. But there are many others to whom history has not been so kind and who nonetheless made important contributions. Charles Lauriat is one of them. His telling of the sinking of the “Lusitania” reads like a novel, a first direct personal account of the tragedy during the swift German Torpedo attack. The sinking of the luxury liner was pivotal, for it signaled an important escalation towards the eventual US entry into the WWI conflict in 1917. The major lessons to be learned here come from the abundance of testimonies left to us as vestiges of the past, from which we still try to make sense.

But the sophistication of sound editing hides Murch’s other passion. He was for much of his life a devout amateur astrophysicist, chronicling long forgotten connection between the Titius-Bode theory and musical harmony in the universe. I would spare you the details, but the law was supposed to have a progression very much like the Fibonacci numbers, based on planets’ positions and rotations. As you can imagine a sound editor advancing long discredited physics theory did not go down too well. By at the heart of this quixotic quest, Murch questions the nature of knowledge. How do we know what we know? And who is to decide what we should know? If these noises are something you are not used to hear, you are in for a compelling tune.

The hero of “Freedom Broker,” Thea Paris, the only woman kidnap negotiator in the field, is forced to live through a family tragedy, when her father, Christo, is kidnapped from his yacht off Santorini, while his crew get slaughtered in the assault. Thea sets to tasks to discover the who and why, investigating her father’s past and numerous enemies. But remember, when originality strikes, it does so with delightful surprises. In Howe’s novel, the kidnappers demand nothing. No ransom, no political prisoner exchange, except sending enervating Latin quotes . . . which, for Thea, initiate a perilous journey to settle long-standing family score.

EXCERPT #2 The Prison of Availability

ne of my clients is a television news producer in his late twenties. He comes into his therapy sessions every week with two smartphones. He places one on each arm of the chair he sits in. Throughout our sessions, the devices light up at least ten times (between the two), if not more. He glances down at his technology a minimum of once per minute. We talk about his need to keep the phones on and to always be available to what messages might be coming in from the office. He is aware that such behavior increases his state of anxiety and keeps him from being able to be fully present in his sessions or anywhere else. Still, he does not feel it is in his power to turn the phones off, not even during his therapy. He believes that his profession requires and deserves his attention around the clock and that if he is not available when a new story comes in, he could potentially miss out on an opportunity to make a name for himself in his professional world. The next story could be the one that rockets him to producer stardom. Furthermore, if something happens on a story that he’s already covering, he believes he is the only one who can take care of what needs to be done. He has come to view himself as fundamentally irreplaceable, even for fifty minutes, in the process of the news being reported properly. Another client recently interviewed for a job with

an executive in the marketing industry. The executive explained that if she were to get the job as his assistant, it would mean that she would have to keep her phone on 24/7 and be constantly available to the needs of the job. This included sleep time, bathroom visits, and, of course, holidays. She was never to be without or even out of sight

terrupted availability is the assumed expectation of many employers — and what employees demand of themselves as well. When an employer provides a cell phone to an employee, there is an assumption that the employee will be available to answer it. The line between work life and personal life is now blurred. As Arnold Bakker, a professor of work and organizational psychology at Erasmus University Rotterdam, framed it, “The smartphone is the Trojan horse through which work sneaks into the home.”1 Even for those who have solidly established professions or for whom technology makes working remotely a much-appreciated option, still, constant connectivity and überavailability are now the norm and not the exception. While it may sound extreme, for people starting out in careers these days, uninterrupted availability is the assumed expectation of many employers — and what employees demand of themselves as well. It is not just our professions to which we believe we must remain überavailable in the age of technology. As parents, we feel that we must be relentlessly on call to our children’s needs. One woman I know takes every FaceTime request from her child, regardless of what she is doing. The fact that her child wants to be with her (on technology) means that she should make herself available. When many of the par¬ents I know consider powering off for a moment, they are stymied by such thoughts as What if it’s my child really wanting or even needing me at the other end of that ding? What if it’s that time when something really bad has happened? Like the news producer, the mothers of young chil¬dren (and older children too) no longer turn their phones off during their therapy sessions. While they don’t generally leave them in full view, nonetheless the phones are there, chiming softly inside their bags and being attended to when they do ring — just in case. “Just in case,” in fact, has become the new guiding principle by which most parents live. We can’t not be available now that technology has gifted us with the possibility of being available. To be unavailable when we could be available would be, as one mother put it, neglectful. The idea of our child receiving a voicemail and not our direct and immediate atten¬tion has become synonymous with abandonment. Before mobile devices made around-the-clock communication possible and expected, it was generally only in the case of life or death, when a relative or other person close to us was sick, that we made ourselves unceasingly available, staying close to the phone at all times, just in case it might bring news. It was in the face of a potential emergency that we felt it necessary to live in a state of hyperreadiness, to be on call without a break. What’s different now is that we are living in this state of hyperreadiness around the clock. In fact, we are not only living this way, we believe that we must live this way. As one friend explained, “The biggest fear when my smartphone goes dead is that everyone will think I’m receiving what they’re sending me, regardless of whether I respond.” When someone sends a text, there is an assumption that we are reading it right then, the instant it appears. (Of course, our phone is on, and we are checking it!) This assumption makes many of us feel like we have to do something with or about every communication that lands on our screen — reward the sender immediately with the flashing dots of our on-the-way response.

The definition of “being available” is being able to be used or obtained, to be at someone’s disposal. Our basic state is now one of being at someone or something else’s disposal without pause. Unfortunately, relentless availability creates relentless stress. Most of us know the anxiety we experience when someone we love is ill and we are on alert, constantly waiting. We now live that stress, to some degree, all the time, and it is as damaging as a situational, short-term state of acute stress. Actually, in some ways it is worse, because the demand for hyperavailability never eases and the situation that requires such availability is never resolved. We never get that phone call that allows us to finally stop listening for it. As one woman I know put it, “It’s like never quite being finished with the job, whatever that job may be.” Our new resting state is one that doesn’t allow for real rest; a part of us must remain always at the ready, as if about to leap out of the starting gate. Although we may have gotten used to it, and thus not notice it as abnormal or even uncomfortable, we are living in what is really an ongoing fight or flight state. It is important that we remember we are human beings and not robots. Unlike robots, we need to experience rest, but rest with consciousness and not just rest when we are asleep. We need time to be awake but not ready and available — to our boss, clients, partner, friends, and even our children. Even the busiest, most responsible, indispensable, or in-demand person can create small spaces to step off the hamster wheel of others’ needs. When we award ourselves the opportunity to turn off the access button to the rest of the world, we experience a profound reduction in stress, not just on a mental level but also on a cellular level. Being fully off duty allows us to reboot our own systems, both body and mind. We need this kind of rest to reestablish well-being and, indeed, to be truly available during those times when we claim to be available. Right now, stop what you are doing for just a moment. Can you feel this breath? And then the next one? And the next? See if you can take three conscious breaths, right now. Feel the breath directly in your body, entering and exiting. While turning off our phone is one path to breaking the stress of chronic availability, we can also find relief through a simple dip into our breath or into any of the body’s senses. When we take a single conscious breath, or pause to feel the sensations in our body or to listen to the sounds coming into our ears, we turn the tables on perpetual availability and become available to ourselves in the deepest way. Diving into our own present-moment awareness, through the breath,

through the senses, is the most simple and direct medicine for the condition of constant availability. Try it now: enter your body’s experience, arrive here, and make yourself fully available to you. In addition to conscious breathing (or sensing), try the following: schedule a time today to spend fifteen minutes being unreachable, entirely. If it helps to tell those who might want to contact you that you will be unavailable, do so. Notice the sensations in your body when you are unavailable, as well as the thoughts and feelings that arise. Don’t react or judge. Just notice what is happening inside you in this off-duty space. If possible, practice this on a daily basis.

She saves them and returns her love for all of them. At present she has 8. Fur babies bring out the best in people. You can’t be shy and she made lots of doggy people friends. Yes, as Fern explains, it is expensive, The Vet bills, the grooming, food and clothing. Fern spends on herself, but the love in return is well worth it. There is no college, no weddings no graduate schools and of course never a vacation. (Who would babysit for 8 dogs) Fern and her fur babies love to go to social and charity events, and raise money to rescue dogs. Fern rotates the dogs so as to expose them to the outside world, all of them love it and the dressing up. As Fern told me, she always has a much brighter smile when she has one of her fur babies in her arms. Remember, you rescue them but they really rescue you. If you want to know more, please email me. e all know about love, my loyal readers or at least we think we do. This month in honor of Valentine’s Day, I show you what real Love is all about. I introduce you to wonder woman, Fern Weinbaum. A legal professional by day, & a saver of fur babies 24 hours a day. Fern was always afraid of dogs, that is until she turned 13. Fern lost her Father and her Mother got her a dog. Mini Poodle, Zsa Zsa who would become the first love of her life for 17 years. Along the way, she adopted a Samoyed, who she found roaming the streets of Long Island. Next came Natasha, who must have been a show dog and was gorgeous. A few weeks after adopting Natasha, she adopted Alfie, a twelve year old silver toy poodle, who was left on a dirty towel, in an empty apt and had perianal tumors. Fern gave him the best remaining years of his life sweet life...

Then came Lexi, another Samoyed. But soon after Fern found her real calling, Thus beginning the Shih Tsu saga. Fern’s mother was living in Florida and she wanted a small dog. In the neighborhood there was a sign for three small Shih Tzu puppies. Fern’s mother moved to a No Pet building and Fern had three more baby Shih Tzu’s. These dogs changed Fern’s life forever. Fern joined a Shih Tzu meet up group and has grown this group to more than 600 members. These three dogs are gone and each dying one year apart. In 2007, Fern adopted Dustin from the ASPCA. He had liver problems and he was snappy. He required a special diet. Fern saved him when others gave up. Two weeks after she got Dustin, a woman called who was pregnant, she met the woman in Penn Station. He had a little pillow and a ratty sweater. He was 8 years old and lived to 13.
