EDITOR’S NOTE Now that fall is well underway, we want to bring you our favorite sweater weather finds and combat boot picks which will let you conquer the world – or at least look like you could. One accessory that’s always in style these days are masks, so make sure to make your eyes pop and keep your skin hydrated. If you’re ready to get away from it all, check out some local getaways and stylish staycations. In the mood for a tea sommelier? Midtown’s Baccarat Hotel takes teatime to a whole new and luxurious level. This month we spoke with Craig Melvin, The Today Show’s most jovial journalist who opens up about how this never-ending news cycle has affected him, as well as how he and his sports journalist wife, Lindsay, and their two young children, are staying positive during the pandemic – let’s just say it includes new hobbies, extra bonding time and even a new show. From protests to a presidential election and an international pandemic, Craig, who got bit by the journalism bug back in high school, has been on the frontlines of pure pandemonium. Lindsay, a stunning blonde who joined her husband at our shoot after a redeye from California, is also a sports fanatic who is
currently reporting on football season – sorry guys, she’s taken! This playful pair looked more like high school sweethearts than a couple who have been married for nine years. Just make sure to tune into The Today Show to keep up with this present-day reality show. This issue is also particularly exciting for me as I get to tell you all about my latest venture – a radio show called Ladies, It’s Not Our Fault, It’s Our Hormones and High Heels! which airs every Saturday at 9am on AM 970 The Answer. Along with my co-hosts, fitness phenom Lisa Avellino and nutrition ninja Jacqui Justice, we discuss how fashion impacts wellness and so much more! We invite you to join us every Saturday for our tips, tricks, humor and candid conversations with celebrity guests such as Nicole Miller, Beverly Johnson and Joan Lunden. We also teamed up to help other women find their leanest and most confident self with The Skinny Line, a brand of all-natural products we thoroughly researched and developed. Our mission was to level the playing field when it came to weight loss – if you’ve ever noticed that men seem to lose weight faster, it’s because they do – but with just one Skinny Spritz, women can score too! New York’s leading lady, Jean Shafiroff, has added another accomplishment to an already long list – television host! This philanthropist, fashionista and animal rights activist is now engaging audiences with fun and informative conversations with her show “Successful Philanthropy” which airs on LTV. You’ll also get to know the A-list’s favorite new artist, Linjie Deng, who is known for his Chinese ink and multimedia masterpieces. Deng’s daring pieces have also been displayed in museums, both in China and the U.S. With Covid-19 cases expected to rise as winter approaches, it’s more important than ever to stay healthy, and now you can keep your energy up with ROAR, an organic beverage company. The brand’s latest campaign focuses on educating people on how drinking ROAR, along with following safety tips such as getting a flu shot, wearing a mask and socially distancing, will keep you strong this season. The holiday season might look different this year, but you can still enjoy a tasty, ethically raised and smaller turkey from Farmer Focus. While they are known for their chickens, Farmer Focus just introduced their naturally delicious turkeys just in time for Thanksgiving. This unique company even allows customers to trace their turkey back to the farm it was raised on. No matter where you find yourself this Turkey Day, I wish you a happy and healthy Thanksgiving! Stay safe!

THE PRINCE & THE SHOWGIRL Prince Albert, Rebel Wilson, Johnny Depp, Isabelle Bscher, Sienna Miller, Suzanne Somers, Kylie & Kendall Jenner, Jean Shafiroff, Beyoncé & Arthur Aidala
By R.Couri Hay with Photos by Patrick McMullan Suzanne Somers: Brace Yourself Suzanne Somers is on the mend after taking a tumble down the stairs with her husband Alan Hamel. Suzanne confided, “Alan and I took a break from our normal schedule because I have been struggling for the better part of the year with a fractured hip, and then Alan and I took an unfortunate fall Suzanne Somers in while coming her neck brace down the stairs at our home.” She then jokes, “I had an intense amount of pain after the fall that was not resolving — even after having tequila!” Somers revealed that she needed neck surgery, as she had two vertebrae out of place that caused extreme pressure on her nerves. However, this injury has not dulled her youthful attitude and glow one bit. The Three’s Company legend and Alan invited all their fans to celebrate Suzanne’s recent 74th birthday, whilst she was in a neck brace, Cindy Bruna and with a virtual cocktail Sienna Miller in party at Big Al’s bar, Monte Carlo which is on their

property. Suzanne also has a large collection of organic beauty products — including a neck cream! — available on her website. Also, her new book A New Way to Age: The Most Cutting-Edge Advances in Antiaging has just been released in paperback. Oprah Winfrey said, “Suzanne is a pioneer!” suzannesomers.com Planetary Health Gala Princess Charlene and Prince Albert hosted the Planetary Health Gala, which was held in a luxurious pavilion — built for the occasion— in front of the Monte Carlo Opera House. Among the stars at the black-tie fête were Kate Beckinsale, Helen Mirren, Sienna Miller, Sting, Tommy Hilfiger, Andy Garcia, Cindy Bruna, Maisie Williams, Reuben Selby, supermodels Sofia Resing and Marianne Fonseca, as well as actress Rebel Wilson and her new beau Jacob Busch of the beer-brewing dynasty. The Prince asked Isabelle Bscher of Galerie Gmurzynska to curate the night’s auction, and she persuaded Johnny Depp to auction off the painting by Míro, titled “Femme, Oiseau”; the work was donated by Joan Punyet Míro, the artist’s grandson, and

fetched $1.6 million. The night’s entertainment featured Leona Lewis and six different bands. Rebel also played auctioneer, selling off two week-long trips on a super-yacht for a total of $1 million. Rebel quipped “I love luxury yachts, invite me!”. Princess Charlene sold a waterbiking experience with her for $600k. The benefit raised over $15 million for the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. The after-party was held in the iconic Monte Carlo casino and the legendary night club Jimmy’z. Some of the guests ended up at Tip Top, the principality’s chic pizza joint at 6 am. At the end of
the weekend festivities, Princess Albert paid Isabelle the ultimate compliment, saying “You are responsible for all of this!” Prince Albert & Gallerist Isabelle Bscher Prince Albert of Monaco and glamourous gallerist Isabelle Bscher opened an exhibition by the painter Joan Miró at the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco. The Prince enlisted Isabelle to curate the show and co-host the opening night dinner for 40 guests at the Monte Carlo Yacht Club. Stars included designer Hedi Slimane and Rebel Wilson, alongside her boyfriend Jacob Busch. The floral designers created an enormous wall of flowers in lush pinks and reds, reflecting colors used in Miró’s paintings, which was the perfect backdrop for Rebel’s fuchsia gown. Isabelle and Rebel flanked the Prince at the long dining table which was festooned with flowers. The first of six courses featured double scoops of caviar — as if it were ice cream! The evening’s entertainment was provided by a variety of bands and didn’t end until the wee hours. The following day, Prince Albert and Isabelle arranged for Johnny Depp to have a private tour of the Miró exhibition. Johnny spent over an hour perusing the

He was completely free.” gmurzynska.com Kylie & Kendall Jenner’s Command Education Christopher Rim, the 25-year-old Yale graduate who founded the tutoring company Command Education and helped Kylie and Kendall Jenner get their high school diplomas, has opened up exclusive education pods Christopher Rim in New York in NYC and

We were the show business culture of the Copacabana, Miami Beach, and Las Vegas. But what the club has to do is reflect the language people speak and therefore, we have to speak the language of today’s generation,” meaning that the traditional and beloved Friars Club is getting an update. This change in attitude has manifested itself in a change of atmosphere. The Friars Club, led by Dean Larry King and Aidala, is undergoing a top-to-bottom overhaul. Aidala continued, “Everybody loves the idea of the Friars but the building and what we offer is not in keeping with what young people want in a social club. So, we decided that this was the time to take this moment and reinvent ourselves physically, to match the coolness of our spirit.” The newly renovated club will reopen early next year. Aidala, who has two young sons Luca and Arthur III with his wife Marianne Bertuna, is proud of the Friars Club’s redesign and hopes to continue to pay homage to the club’s greats, such as Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lewis, and Alan King while

MITCH SUSS
Getting to Know the Man Entrepreneur Who is Reshaping the Lives of Women By Lauren Bens
I
f you want to balance your metabolism, lose weight, and more importantly, readjust your mindset, Balance 3H Plus has just the individualized program to bring out the best version of yourself. Mitch Suss, founder and CEO of Balance 3H Plus Medical Weight Loss and Spa Center, Inc., has indeed helped many young, middle-age and older women take their hormonal destiny into their own hands with his company’s proprietary weight loss program Balance 3H Plus, which is predicated on their exclusive blood panel Health 365, designed just for women. By identifying the specific hormones contributing to weight gain, creating medically supervised customized weight loss programs, and reducing chronic inflammation, it becomes easier to manage the hormones that have a huge impact on belly fat and increase your risk for every chronic disease including diabetes, thyroid disease, heart disease, and certain cancers-just beware-you might also wind up with less stress and levels of feeling your sexiest and most confident self. You can also keep your body ready for battle with the B3H Plus IV Weight loss and immunity boosting drips to help ensure you stay strong and lean during these uncertain times.
18 | resident.com
Of the thousands of businesses that entrepreneurs launch every year, Balance 3H Plus stands out as the best for well, improving the quality of life and health of women. This revolutionary regimen transforms the lives of women from clinically depressed, sick and obese to happy, healthy and lean- if this sounds like changing (it is!) then that makes Mitch Suss deserving of the honor of entrepreneur of the year, hands down. If you are ready to get fit and healthy, you will want to hear all about the history of the brand and the man. Balance 3H Plus is reinventing the lives of women in their 20’s, 30’s, 40s, 50s, and beyond who are struggling with hormonal related weight gain and chronic health issues. Balance 3H Plus Medical Center & Spa incorporates technology, consulting, cutting edge-research, and innovative anti-aging and cosmetic solutions for the female demographics, creating a happy home, happy family, and happy self-existence that nurtures and promotes a happy life. Mitch has spend years fostering leading research collaborations with world-renowned medical institutions, scientists, and wellness thought leaders to introduce wellness standards, nutritionally based hormone balancing programs and solutions
into the current diet environment that is still rooted in the ‘calorie in, calorie out’, eat less, exercise more’ paradigm. For example; Nutrition researcher and New York Times bestselling author, Neal Barnard, M.D., demonstrates how food affects our hormones-and our health. Dr Bernard shares the science behind how common conditions-like infertility, weight gain, menopausal systems, breast cancer, thyroid problems and acneare fueled by hormones that are hidden in or influenced by the foods we eat. Imagine experiencing years of unexplained infertility until a simple diet change sets things right. Or suffering from unexplained weight gain or obesity, endometriosis, debilitating menstrual cramps, polycystic ovary syndrome, diabetes, or even acne without ever realizing that the solution could be as simple as the food on your plate. Incredibly, most women who will benefit from this very subtle switch of diet, do not even realize that a hormone imbalance maybe contributing to or even causing their health problem. At Balance 3H Plus, women in their 20’s, 30,s 40,s 50,s and beyond share stories of how they overcame their medical conditions by simply changing their diets.
“Its time to bring the science of weight loss out of the dark ages and apply a new understanding of how hormones impact weight loss and metabolism,” explains Mitch. “Everyone who is part of this movement believes fully in this healthy new paradigm shift. From physicians and nutritionists to medical professionals, from sustainability advocates to health and wellness thought leaders, it was evident to most how critical this concept is to the millions of women stuck in unsuccessful antiquated weight loss programs. We have been fortunate to attract many influential and powerful women who are very supportive of our efforts to improve both the mind and body using targeted nutritional principles backed by the most recent scientific research in the biology and physiology of women, as they recognize the great implication and importance of what we are accomplishing-which is to passively deliver a safe and effective medical solution to the millions of women suffering needlessly from hormonal imbalances.” Mitch, also explained that he is “proud of the global reach we have achieved in just a short few years”. We strive to form strong strategic relationships with leading medical institutions at the intersection and crossways of health, fitness and psychology. Success to me, and to the balance 3H Plus team, is largely focused on how many women we can have a positive impact on. Everyday I translate the fact that we are influencing health outcomes for thousands of women already, and are only growing. Through our hard work, dedication and zest, we have a unique opportunity to advance the health and well-being of women at scale.” About The Man After caring for his ill mother who was suffering from cancer, Mitch made it his life’s mission to find a better way for women to fulfill their health goals in a natural and holistic way. As his mother’s primary caretaker, Mitch watched her teeter back and forth between moments of pain, frustration, and sadness, as well as moments of optimism and spiritual strength. This time with his mother taught Mitch how delicate and fleeting life can be. It opened up his heart to explore, authentic connections with other women whom he would come to love and care for. It also gave him a deep and profound perspective that all women desire emotional understandings and open communications in relationships, but often struggle to find it. This experience gave Mitch an incredible resolve and profound understanding to go out into the business world and try to help as many people he can from the ravishes, pain and suffering illness brings to so many.
Balance 3H Plus has 3 Unique components that guarantee your success: 1. WE TEST, WE DONT GUESS - A women’s hormone levels. This is the most overlooked and unappreciated by the mainstream diet industry. Many women may experience symptoms which may be related to a variety of metabolic dysfunctions or an imbalance between certain hormones. Of course decreased energy and weight gain could also be related to a hunger or stress hormone imbalance, sluggish thyroid, poor lifestyle and diet, even food intolerances and sensitivities. Without valid testing, we can never know which are out of balance. We first decode these deficiencies and take appropriate measures to correct these imbalances. 2. A NUTRITION PLAN - designed specifically for the unique dietary needs of women experiencing the hormonal imbalances and debilitating symptoms that are wreaking havoc on their bodies. 3. BALANCE 3H PLUS ALL-natural supplement protocol to restore hormone balance, alleviate symptoms and help women lose fat and gain muscle. When we treat these imbalances and metabolic dysfunctions, our patients get back the energy and vitality they once had. And many lose up to 25 pounds during the initial 8-week program.
but Mitch has both the personality, resolve and perseverance to come out on top. Though he might be known as an energetic and resolute entrepreneur, as well as radio show creator, producer and authoryou’ll definitely want to read his book entitled “It’s not your fault, it’s your hormones,” -Mitch has navigated through both personal and professional hardships only to be considered by his peers to be one of the next rising stars in the health and wellness industry. The great news is there are a lot of things women can do to take back control of their emotional health and life. There are answers for every women at every stage. Women no longer have to feel victimized by haywire hormones and conventional diets that make you fat and do not work. And for many the answer lies in foods that are fortified with nutrients to keep you healthy and hormonally balanced! For a growing number of ladies, B3H Plus is the next, most logical step for them to take in order to help care for themselves, their health and their bodies. I know one thing for sure, Mitch Suss has my vote for entrepreneur of the year. balance3hplus.com
According to Mitch, honing in on specific hormones without the use of drugs, is essential for managing your health and lifestyle, as well as reducing stress and anxiety. “When you Balance a women’s naturally occurring hormones in a certain stage of life, they feel younger, energized, sexy, and more confident with their new body. Our two week metabolic cleanse, which should be done at least twice a year, revitalizes your energy levels, clears up your skin, and weans you off alcohol, tobacco and sugar, which is vital for long term weight success. We rid the body of toxins and the difference can really be seen and felt within a short time. One added (and very big) benefit, is that many spouses and significant others often call up the center and thank us for reigniting the passion, fervor and intimacy that disappeared In their relationships many years ago. This makes myself and staff members very proud!” These might be trying times,

ADD A LAYER OF PROTECTION AGAINST THE CORONAVIRUS with this Hypoallergenic Facial Spray By Lauren Bens
H
ave you thought about the possibility of contracting COVID-19 after touching a public surface and then touching your face or rubbing your eyes before washing your hands or using hand sanitizer? Or have you been within six feet of a stranger not wearing a mask? Until recently, it was understood that the coronavirus can be passed from person-to-person from respiratory droplets, such as when someone talks, breathes, sings, coughs, or sneezes, but the CDC revised its COVID-19 guidelines in early October to include spreading through aerosols, which can linger in the air for minutes to hours, and travel farther than six feet. Enter Avenova, an antimicrobial spray originally designed for eyecare that has recently been proven to kill SARS-CoV-2 (the coronavirus that
20 | resident.com
causes COVID-19) on hard surfaces. Even with a mask, droplets can come in contact with the rest of the skin on your face – or even your eyelids. Since putting hand sanitizer on your face is not desirable, and face-washing is not always possible, a spritz or two of Avenova provides an all-natural and completely non-toxic solution. While we still need to adhere to recommended precautions, such as wearing masks and social distancing, Avenova’s pure 0.01% Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) solution can provide additional peace of mind. Made in the USA, Avenova is the only lab-tested, truly pure HOCl, and is FDA cleared. Because our bodies naturally produce HOCl to fight off toxins and inflammation caused by bacteria, unlike hand sanitizer or Clorox wipes, it is gen-
tle enough to use on the delicate skin on your face. However, it’s important to know that not all hypochlorous acid products are created equal and many can irritate skin if they are not pure. As a result, this pure “facial sanitizer” can safely be sprayed directly on the delicate areas around the eyes, nose, and mouth any number of times – and is also safe to use on children. Originally formulated as a prescription-only lid and lash solution to relieve dry eyes, contact lens intolerance, inflammation, styes, and other eye-related issues, Avenova, which is now available without a prescription, also doubles as a doctor recommended remedy to soothe and relieve eyes and prevent eye infections. Avenova retails for $29.00. u Avenova.com

LAUREN JENAI CrossFit Co-Founder Speaks Out By R. Couri Hay
Fitness Frontierswoman Fitness frontierswoman and freedom fighter, Lauren Jenai has the pulse of now. When fitness became a lifestyle in the 2000s, Jenai trailblazed the industry with CrossFit. The company she pioneered with her ex-husband Greg Glassman grew from just 13 gyms in 2005 to 13,000 by 2016. Jenai built CrossFit into one of the most valuable and recognizable fitness brands in the world. Jenai is now flying solo, having launched her own digital fitness app “Manifest”. She describes the app as documentation and support of your individual journey: “Before you can make a change, you have to really know who you are, where you are, and what you want. Manifest creates a space that furthers your understanding of your body and your health journey, holding you accountable all the way through.” True Crime When True Crime became America’s latest obsession, Jenai wasn’t watching Netflix specials. She was already waist-deep in a murder drama worthy of the podcast sensation “Serial.” In 2017, Jenai received word that her childhood friend Franklin Tyrone Tucker, known as Ty, was in jail in Key West accused of murder. After obsessively researching the case, she became convinced that Ty was falsely accused, the victim of a corrupt small-town police department. Recently divorced with a $20 million settlement in her pocket, she threw all of her time and resources into proving Ty’s innocence. Then — despite the possibility that Ty could serve a life sentence, despite having no physical contact with each other for 30 years, despite receiving an almost comical centu-

ry-long ban from video chatting with Ty — the two fell madly in love. “We spoke for hours on the phone everyday,” she says. “We were like teenagers.” Worthy of a Movie After convincing herself that she would never remarry, the mother of four paid Ty’s $2 million bond and married him in an intimate ceremony on her front lawn this past July. Ty is now under house arrest in her family home until his trial. However, the newlyweds are hopeful — to defend Ty, there are 300 pieces of mishandled evidence and a living victim. If all that sounds more like a movie than real life, producers think so, too. Jenai says that she has received offers for books, Netflix series and feature film adaptations of her life. In fact, she is currently in negotiations for a movie! Framed for Murder “The thing I couldn’t get out of my head with Ty was, ‘What if this happened to me?” she says. “I thought, ‘We grew up in the same neighborhood. It could happen to me. I could be framed for murder.’ What if somebody framed me for murder and nobody was there to help. I couldn’t live with myself knowing that I had the potential to help and didn’t.” Nevertheless, Jenai hopes that at least for now, the circus has left town. She’s enjoying domesticity for the first time in a long time – “even the extra set of dirty socks,” she laughs. She still spends four hours a day working on Ty’s case and speaking with their attorneys, but grilling steaks and Netflix binges as a family have fast become the norm. “Experiencing what we’ve been experiencing is sort of like watching a TV show or a movie,” she says. “But at this moment, we are enjoying this time together, just being parents.” All of Jenai’s endeavors have been with one idea in mind: “Give people the resources and opportunity to be self-reliant.” And whether it was through freedom fighting, speaking up, or building an irreplaceable fitness community, Lauren Jenai has done just that. u bemanifest.com

SHALINI
The Fragrance Superstar Who Will Have You Smelling Like Serenity By Betty Taylor
W
ith award-winning fragrances across the globe, Shalini’s sense of scent has made her namesake haute parfum collection one of the most coveted brands with a loyal following. The newest fragrance in her Pure Parfum Collection, IRIS LUMIÈRE is presented in the Lalique crystal flacon “Deux Fleurs” as well as the classic Black bulb atomizer and Glass stopper bottles. The five parfums are part of a series created by Shalini and Master Perfumer Maurice Roucel and they reflect the changing moods and passions of the soul. Shalini’s parfums are consistently listed within the top ten most famed fragrances in the world.
All of my fragrances evokes a special time in my life. I was very fortunate to collaborate with the very talented Master Perfumer, Maurice Roucel who was able to capture my beautiful evocative memories. My first fragrance, Shalini, was created from childhood memories of the lingering fragrance of tuberose and dancing butterflies in the garden. I often went to the garden to smell tuberoses in full bloom under the moonlight. Shalini is one of the rare fragrances in the world composed of the tuberose absolute, often referred to as “liquid gold” and the purest extraits of neroli from the South of France and tiare, the flower of love from Tahiti.
What inspired you to start a line of luxury perfumes? My first scent memory was as a baby being massaged in essential oils by my mother. That’s when my love for fragrance was born. The pursuit of beauty and creation is my soul’s greatest desire. My career has been focused on creating things of beauty and luxury. I come from the world of Haute Couture; a world of luxurious fabrics and time-honored craftsmanship with a reverence for design. After working with Valentino, I launched my own women’s Haute Couture collection, Shalini Couture, I soon desired to bring the same sense of luxury to perfume when I created Shalini Parfum. Haute Parfum. The idea behind Shalini Parfum was to create something of beauty, of lasting value and of the ethereal that will stand the test of time. My fragrances are Modern Masterpieces.
How did Amorem Rose become the signature scent of the iconic Pierre NY, a Taj Hotel? The Pierre, with its French and Indian heritage, is the perfect home for Amorem Rose. Inspired by the opulent rose gardens that surround the Taj Mahal, Amorem Rose captures the luxury and understated elegance that is such a part of The Pierre’s personality.
Do you equate smell with memory? If so, what memories do your fragrances evoke for you?

Amorem Rose is a beautiful olfactive memory of your stay at The Pierre! Amorem Rose was a finalist for the Fragrance Foundation awards 2019. How did you achieve such success in the ever-evolving beauty industry? I desired to launch Shalini Parfum at the prestigious Bergdorf Goodman. Pat Saxby, VP Divisional Merchandise Manager of cosmetics and fragrances at Bergdorf’s fell in love with Shalini immediately. Pat recognized the uniqueness of my Parfums and has always believed in them. She is the Godmoth-
er of the brand. I compose my fragrances like poems —the passion I bring is very deep — it is an offering of the self, at the soul level to the wearer. We are blessed with a very loyal following among fragrance lovers and retailers that are devoted to featuring the best in our Parfums. Your most beloved fragrance? Right now, with the world in the current state, Paradis Provence with its healing energy is the fragrance I turn to most. The thyme, lavande absolut, neroli, jasmine and olive leaf are an essential composition for wellness. Paradis Provence was nominated for the Fragrance Foundation awards 2020. New products set to launch? Our fifth parfum, IRIS LUMIÈRE launched in Autumn 2020 with an exclusive prelaunch in Harrods Salon de Parfums. Paradis Provence is the Golden light of the Sun and the new fragrance is the Silver light of the Moon. Shalini Parfum is the only complete collection created by Master Perfumer Maurice Roucel. I have been honored to collaborate with Maurice on all of my fragrances. They are represented in Bergdorf Goodman, Harrods Salon de Parfums, Jovoy Paris, Spitzenhaus Zurich, Perfume Lounge Amsterdam, Al Hazm Qatar, Fragrance Vault Lake Tahoe, Aedes Perfumery New York, Beverly Hills Perfumery, Parfumeri Nasree in Seattle and Scentido Perfumery in India. amongst other Haute Parfumeries worldwide.u shaliniparfum.com @shaliniparfum

ou’re not imagining it: there really are differences between the way men and women diet, lose weight and respond to exercise. Some of the differences stem from biology; other differences are behavioral. Still, the fact has always remained that men lose weight faster than women—but, women, do not despair! The information and research that three women from very distinct and diverse industries have unearthed about the differences in the way women lose weight inspires hope for the next generation of weight-loss advice that is getting today’s American women closer to sliding into their dream jeans—even faster than a man can! Not all metabolisms are made the same. Since men tend to have more muscle than women, and muscle burns more calories than fat, men tend to have it easier when it comes to shedding off that steak sandwich. Not to fear, these three fierce females, who like to call themselves FEM-preneurs, have introduced an exclusive product company called The Skinny Line, which they claim has leveled the playing field in the weight-loss game. While their research has eluded medical science for years, making generations of women believe that they were powerless to lose stubborn belly fat at the same rate as their boyfriends and husbands, these FEM-preneurs want to put the power back into your hands. “When it comes to food, there is evidence that men and women’s brains are wired differently,” explains Skinny Line functional nutritionist Jacqui Justice. “Even though women said they weren’t hungry when asked to smell, taste, and observe treats such as pizza, cinnamon buns and chocolate cake, brain scans showed activity in the regions that control the drive to eat, which is not the case for men.”
30 | resident.com
This striking difference between the sexes is even more noticeable at the gym. According to Skinny Line’s fitness guru extraordinaire Lisa Avellino, that difference just gets exacerbated. “Women, worried about bulking up, tend to lift lighter weights and focus on cardiovascular fitness, while men tend to gravitate toward the kind of heavy lifting that boosts muscle composition and metabolic rate.” It’s unfair, so why does it work like this? Well, to find out, we have to get back to biochemistry basics. In women, ghrelin, or the “I’m hungry” hormone, spikes after a workout, while leptin, which tells the brain “I’m full!” plummets. Meanwhile, men do not have these same voices in their head. Post-workout, women tend to eat more, making them more susceptible to gaining weight. Once again, men do not experience their hormones going haywire in this manner. Researchers speculate that it’s all a Darwinian issue, as this is the female body’s natural way of fighting energy deficits in order to preserve fertility and perpetuate the species. “When women aren’t getting enough calories, ovulation and hormones that make reproduction possible get suppressed,” says Julie Sagoskin, editor-in-chief of Resident Magazine. These three FEM-preneurs argue that it is more than just biology at play here. A motley combination of emotional and behavioral issues have a powerful impact on the way men and women approach weight loss. One area where women get a boost, however, is in support systems. Men tend to do deal with things on their own, which leads them to give up more easily during stressful or turbulent times in their lives. Women, however, are more likely to reach out to friends,
family, a dietitian or a group, such as the Skinny Line FEM-preneurs. It might be easy to get discouraged, but these unstoppable FEM-preneurs actually find women’s weight loss prospects encouraging. Their SCIENCE FIRST Skinny Line solutions are immensely powerful concepts, and being on the heels of a tidal wave of new research is sure to result in a metabolic mountain of weight-loss advice that will help women level the weight loss playing field with men! It’s time to meet these three powerful female entrepreneurs, who like to call themselves FEMpreneurs. They are on a mission to level the playing field when it comes to weight-loss results between men and women. Women might retain more fat, but that doesn’t mean they can’t shed the pounds at the same rapid rate as their husbands! A lifestyle editor, a fitness expert, and a nutrition guru—what do they have in common? They want to help you look and feel like you’re living your happiest and healthiest life! While waiting to be rescued on a desert island, editor-in-chief Julie Sagoskin, fitness phenom Lisa Avellino and nutrition ninja Jacqui Justice dedicated their days to creating products that would make women leaner, sexier and more satisfied. Okay…that’s not exactly how it happened, but these three powerful women DO want to rescue you from being stranded with toxic, artificial products in your cabinets. While on a celebrity photo shoot, Julie met Lisa and Jacqui along with their A-list client who was in top shape and drinking some of Jacqui’s creative concoctions. With her on-the-go New York lifestyle, Julie realized that she too could use a well-deserved wellness boost. Upon meet-

ing with both Lisa and Jacqui at Balance 3H Plus Medical Weight Loss & Aesthetic Spa for Women, New York’s top premiere weight-loss center in Westchester, New York, she was blown away by their cutting-edge methods. She was able to incorporate their diet and fitness plans into her busy schedule of directing shoots, planning cover parties and overseeing the editorial direction of the magazine. The three became fast friends and realized that they all shared the same desire to empower and educate other women on how to be their most successful selves. During a much-needed girl’s night out, Julie expressed that she didn’t have time to keep a regimented diet or fitness schedule. “Wouldn’t it be great to just spritz yourself skinny?” she joked. While it might have seemed funny at the time, this was no laughing matter—these three women wanted to help each other and others out there, so they decided the time had come to find a way for women to manage their metabolism without making sacrifices. Unsatisfied with the current products on the market, they knew they wanted to create a trusted brand that would include all-natural ingredients. Thus, The Skinny Line was born. Let’s just say that after a lot of research and hard work, you can now spritz yourself skinny! These three dedicated and devoted ladies wanted all women to be able to find scientifically backed products that would help them regain their confidence, whether on the catwalk or in their corner office. You might be able to curb cravings with Skinny Suppress, but more importantly, you won’t be suppressed any longer! Women, let’s face it, we are the stronger sex, so why is it harder for us to lose weight? You know
32 | resident.com
what I’m talking about—you keep a strict lowcarb diet, you sign up for every spin cycle class at the local gym, and you might lose a pound or two. Meanwhile, you watch how easy it is for the pounds to come off fast and furiously for your boyfriend who puts in the same effort as you do, or less! While it’s true that women have more body fat than men, the narrative that it is medically impossible for women to lose weight as quickly as men, even when on the same diet and fitness regimen, is now false thanks to The Skinny Line! The truth is, American women are being lied to by the medical community. They are being told over and over again that they cannot lose weight as fast as men. Well, guess what? Women aren’t going to take it anymore. It’s time to fight fat fairly! Just when women reach the pinnacle of their careers and confidence levels, they are being taken down in an untimely fashion due to inflammation, obesity, and unnecessary hysterectomies. The Skinny Line was designed exclusively for women’s unique physiology. It’s 2020, which means it’s time for women to finally be even with men when it comes to standing on the scale! Now women have a chance to take on men, and win the weight-loss game! Based on clinically proven and Science First research, not trendy diet plans, the real end result is a series of specially formulated products with bio-identical compounds used by the weight loss industry’s leading medical professionals. Exclusively designed by fierce women for fierce women, these products galvanize women, giving them the impetus to get out there and tackle their own targeted fat areas as fast as men. It’s time for
women to get off of the weight-loss sidelines and finally score! These FEM-preneurs have climbed their way to the top of the wellness world, and they want to help take you to new and healthier heights. They won’t let men win the weight-loss game, and neither should you! Lisa, Jacqui and Julie are here to rescue you from the deep, dark depths of fad dieting. Instead, they want to lead you to a lighter you. Don’t sink to the bottom of despair. Get in the Skinny Line and join the FEM-preneur tribe. With the SCIENCE FIRST philosophy behind every product, you can make sure you are treating your body to safe and healthy ingredients. Whether it’s a spritz or a shake, these easy-touse products can be used at work, during your commute or any time in between your hectic schedule. REAL FEM-preneurs don’t just get to the peak of skinny success—they bring other women along for the ride. This togetherness philosophy is close to the hearts of the brand’s founders, who wish to fulfill every woman’s weight loss wish list. Lisa, Jacqui and Julie love inspiring and educating women on their way to finding their best looking—and feeling—self so much that they were asked to sign on as hosts of their own radio show called “Ladies, It’s Not Our Fault…It’s Our Hormones and High Heels!” which airs every Saturday from 9-10am on AM 970 The Answer, one of New York’s widest-reaching stations. Josie was so excited about the launch that she stayed for the remainder of the show to hear more and to ask her own questions. As high-profile working women, these FEM-preneurs want to help women shed their love handles on their journey to loving themselves, both inside and out. According to Julie, America’s style starlet, the show is the first of its kind to intertwine wardrobe with wellness, and vice versa. “I love that I get to bring my fashion and celebrity insights to the show. Lisa, Jacqui and Julie invite you to join them every Saturday morning for fun and informative conversations with their celebrity guests. They also talk about The Skinny Line on their show, so make sure to tune in and learn how to make one of Jacqui’s healthy juices, or find out what “taking a shower on the inside” really means! If you missed one of their most listened-to segments, like when famed fashion icon Nicole Miller discussed how she handled virtual Fashion Week this year and how she keeps in shape—let’s just say it involves a lot of spin classes—you can listen to their podcast page on am970theanswer. com. Oh, and Nicole wants to invite you to wear one of her very stylish masks! While you might get plenty of style tips from Julie—let’s just say she wants you to invest in a classic or cutting-edge leather jacket—or posture lessons from Lisa, their honest, heart-to-heart conversations are some of the most meaningful parts of the program. When the creator of the Cheetah Girls franchise, Deborah Gregory, came on the show, along with her best friend, Beverly Johnson, Deborah opened up about her personal story growing up in the foster care
system and how writing The Cheetah Girls allowed her to immerse herself in a world she wishes she could have been a part of as a child. Meanwhile, the recently engaged Beverly Johnson, the first African American woman to appear on the cover of Vogue, as well as the French edition of Elle, explained that she is ready to embrace the biggest chapter of her life and career in her 70s! Perhaps the most winning warrior of them all was special guest Joan Lunden, New York Times best-selling author and Good Morning America host for three decades. This breast cancer survivor, who recently released her most candid book yet, did not hold back. Lunden explained that while age might come with wisdom, it also comes with a leaky bladder! Not to worry—Jacqui and Lisa’s healthy food and fitness tips will keep every body in sexy shape, regardless of age. According to Lisa, doing even small workouts can add up. Cutting out sugar—and yes, that includes wine—is one of Jacqui’s most crucial tips. Wondering if you can wear ripped jeans past 40? Julie says yes! Just pair it with a solid top or sweater. Whether they are wearing low-rise jeans due to their daily Skinny Spritzes while sailing on the high seas (you know…just a typical day at work!) or wearing sweatpants (cute ones, of course) at home while catching up on work emails, these FEM-preneurs have made it their mission to conquer the wellness world. Pamper yourself with the Skinny Line products, listen to their cutting-edge radio show and get ready to be a member of this powerful leading ladies club! What’s next for these fierce leaders? Tune in every Saturday at 9am on AM 970 The Answer to find out! The weight loss war with men has just begun! u theskinnyline.com

ple of such dedication is the fact that the company trains, educates, and houses all staff members and their families. In other words, Aranyani provides equal opportunities for everyone involved with the brand and provides them with an inclusive and enriching environment that accounts for exquisitely crafted handbags.
Located in Bangalore, India, Aranyani’s state-ofthe-art atelier is heavily inspired by Indian Kirana, a small, family-run shop that served the local community, and top European ateliers. Led by the Founder and Creative Director Haresh Mirpuri, the brand has produced high-quality goods since 2016. To reach international standards of craftsmanship, each member of the talented team of artisans has to participate in a 3-year training program alongside the best leather craftspeople, including Raphael Lombardo, who has worked with Cartier, Armani, and LVMH Group, before taking on needle and thread. Their rich experience and passion results in beautiful pieces of Indian luxury.

The newest collection – Aravalli story – debuted over the summer. This chic collection showcases the country’s long tradition of luxury, translating it into their modern aesthetic. The name of the collection comes from the Aravalli mountain range, the oldest in India, and is dedicated to highlighting the brand’s rebirth into the top contender on the US market. Talking about the collection, Mirpuri says, “the natural beauty of India has inspired generations of artists, designers, and craftsmen since before the Silk Road. Through Aranyani, we want to showcase the beauty of India and the artistry of the people to the world.” The collection consists of two lines, the Kesuda, named after the exotic flower, and the Stone Drops, named after the semi-precious stones that project the enchanting beauty of Indian land and rich cultural traditions. Both of the lines fuse colors and patterns, creating a sense of uniqueness in each and every one of its featured handbags. ’ONAT’s Fall Winter 2020 Collection is inspired by the many adventurous women of the mid-century. The jackets and coats were designed to encompass the spirit of late-1950s couture and the seasonal beauty of New York City. The outerwear brand takes faux fur to a new level – distinctive fine quality that is indistinguishable in look, fit and feel from their real counterparts. Each style is sophisticated, easy to wear, and timeless. Their mission is to deliver thoughtful design made with certified eco-friendly textiles and finishes like fine metal zippers, snaps and buttons. The meticulous craftsmanship of ‘old world’ European ateliers makes N’ONAT a guilt-free luxury for your wardrobe. In addition to being a wife and mother, she travels frequently between NYC and Europe, particularly Istanbul where N’ONAT is manufactured. She has worked as a consulting designer in multiple European markets, with a focus on leather and fur outerwear. Nihan gained a deep knowledge of furs, pelts, and other materials – that exposure led her to discover that equivalent high-end outerwear could be created without harming animals in the process. ing re-hung With inner pockets and secure zipper closures, you’ll never lose your most important documents again. This stylish suit which is A-list approved yet affordable, also feels more like activewear, so you can look good and feel even better. Perez, who studied Fashion Design at the International Fashion Academy in Shanghai and started as an intern designer for China 1 Link, begin to realize that there was a need for a new kind of suit. “While taking a two-year hiatus working for M1NT, a prestigious nightclub/restaurant in Shanghai, I frequently wore suits and began to notice the countless limitations of the classic suit. Out of this need I returned to my true passion, my fashion roots, and created the xSuit as a solution for the modern man, a suit that withstands liquid, stains, smells and wrinkles featuring the utmost comfort and luxury design details.” If you want to make an even bolder fashion statement, you can pair your suit with one of their designer face masks. The xMask Pro, their best seller, has a specially designed silicone mold that creates an airtight seal around your nose and mouth,
making sure that everything is filtered through a medical-grade filter with a 99% filtration rating. The xMask Pro’s silicone ear loops are a welcome innovation from the typical face masks that tend to make your ears sore. The adjustable straps allow you to customize the fit of the mask to your face, making it both comfortable and secure. It is available in black or white. Who does Perez design for? Well, according to this fashion entrepreneur, the xSuit customer is really every man. “He tends to be tech-forward, enjoys traveling and looks to make a strong fashion statement with his style and is unafraid of being different. Many xSuit customers are entrepreneurs in the tech and business industries. From millennials looking for luxury on a budget, to middle-aged executives looking for comfort, xSuit caters to ages 18+ with the highest volume sold to residents of New York and California. With that being said, our customer base is expanding both nationally and globally, as we currently ship to over 50 countries worldwide.” u Xsuit.com

CRAIG MELVIN Reporting on Today’s America by Julie Sagoskin I Photographed By Udo Spreitzenbarth
W
hether it’s an uplifting profile piece or a more in the trenches tale from the current never-ending news cycle, Craig Melvin, a friendly face of NBC News’ TODAY, has been making his mark on the broadcasting industry for almost two dedicated decades. While the world started shutting down in March due to the unprecedented pandemic, Craig was still reporting live from Studio 1A at 30 Rock, without help from the hair, makeup and wardrobe crew. “It was just me, my colleague Hoda Kotb, one camera guy and a few security guys,” explained Melvin. After his in-studio appearances, Craig reports on breaking news from his basement for MSNBC. From the COVID-19 crisis to the death of Minneapolis man George Floyd and subsequent protests, Craig has been at the forefront of this fast-paced news cycle. He attended Floyd’s funeral in Houston and has even
found some silver lining stories amidst a most turbulent time. What has this time of madness looked like in the Melvin household? Well, his sports broadcaster wife, Lindsay, took up another profession – homeschool teacher! “My son is six and my daughter is three-and-a-half. I go into the city every morning, so before the kids started going back to school, my house pretty much just became mommy school. Not only did my wife take on the role of teacher, but she did it masterfully. She had lesson plans on boards and a joke of the day to get the day started – there was laughing, writing, reading and math.” Melvin and his family live in the suburbs of Connecticut, where they have come to appreciate their serene surroundings even more. Plus, not even a pandemic can put Craig and his wife’s careers on hold. Lindsay, who got her start in NASCAR, decided to pitch a show

to Fox on NASCAR drivers who were also stuck at home so viewers could see what they have been doing during this time. According to her proud hubby, Lindsay was able to develop and pitch the show which was bought in two weeks. “The network had nothing to put on television and watching her get this together was a sight to behold. We are blessed in a myriad of ways. We have rediscovered nature and have been going on a lot of family bike rides. I have really reconnected with my kids in a new way, especially my daughter, as it forced us to spend so much time together. It’s been a mixed blessing. We’ve all been healthy but we know people who have been affected. I’ve been working this whole time so try not to complain. We are fortunate and we have healthy kids back in school. I was reporting at the height of the crisis and I remember seeing the Navy hospital ship come into the harbor and I said to myself, ‘god, what is about to happen?’ With the governor pleading for ventilators, and doctors and nurses talking about wearing trash bags for protection, there was this feeling of life or death being juxtaposed with what you were

coming home to everyday. It made me really, really appreciate what I have. It took more of a toll on me emotionally and mentally than I fully appreciated at the time. I’m in a much better place than I was. We went from the pandemic to the George Floyd news in Minneapolis, and the nature of what we do calls for us to bear witness to history so when things happen, we, as journalists, have an obligation and duty to be there. When I went to Minneapolis, I was able to be there on the ground and talk to people and the family of George Floyd and his lawyers. It’s been an interesting time to have conversations like this. We have really lurched from one big event in history to the next.” He might have a great smile, but these tumultuous times have taken a toll on even this journalist. Though Craig says that he is usually able to develop somewhat of an emotional distance, he recounts a moment on the set of TODAY that has since gone viral. “We were doing a show about teachers who were giving back and how much they were missing their students and vice versa.
We came out of the story and I’m not a man of great emotion, but I lost it. It wasn’t so much that particular story, but a culmination of all of the social unrest and doom. I was just sick of it all and it bubbled to the surface and I just wept. It really hit me that this is all so very sad. For journalists especially, there are periods where we’re very busy and drinking from the fire hydrant every day, and today all the stories are just so consequential. We live in a time where there are more than 40 million Americans who are not working who want to work. Normally this would have been the top story, but economics have been overshadowed by health concerns. We have a global pandemic that has taken the lives of more than 225,000 Americans who were with us just eight months ago – they were colleagues, friends, parents and children. While social media and staunchly opposing views are contributing to a sometimes false narrative, Craig relies on reality. “We’ve all decided that our world view is the right world view rather than wanting to learn something new by reading or watching something which might broaden

your intellectual horizons. I report on facts, not my opinion.” Craig, who is originally from Columbia, South Carolina, knew he had a nose for the news back in high school when he noticed an advertisement for teens to report on a story of interest to young people. He hopped into his dad’s car and after an impressive audition which consisted of showcasing a story on his favorite teacher, Mike Fanning. Unbeknownst to this budding journalist, they entered his story into an Associated Press competition which he ultimately won, and soon found himself at the awards banquet with his mother and younger brother as well as the station’s news director. “I thought to myself wow; you can make a living from telling stories? What a great gig!” Though he went on to study government in college, he realized that he really he wanted to go into the news biz. He started working at a local
television station at 21 years old and has been in the industry ever since. Aside from reporting breaking news, Craig’s other great love is his wife. The two met at a television station in Washington, D.C., and let’s just say that reporting runs in the family. Lindsay’s father was even executive editor of USA Today. While posing in front of avant garde pieces in Soho’s chicest space, The Georges Berges Gallery, the longtime lovebirds and sports fans couldn’t help but admire their surroundings and joke about moving to the gallery’s oh-so-chic New York street. They might be celebrating nine years of marriage, but these two seemed more like they were in the honeymoon stage than the two kids later living in the suburbs phase! With two reporter parents, it might not be long before the Melvin children also make their
own television appearances. “Our kids are old enough now to hear and understand things. They know a lot about the pandemic and politics. At this point they can even identify certain newsmakers by sight. In the beginning they couldn’t watch my cable show but now it’s cool again seeing dad on TV so they’re getting back into it a little bit. I guess more information is better than no information.” While he is a big sports fan, Craig says he’s “probably one of the few guys in America who doesn’t look forward to football season as much” simply because that’s when Lindsay is traveling for FOX NFL. Still, these two always find time for family – and new hobbies. While Craig, who has always been a charity golfer, has been playing more socially distanced golf, Lindsay has taken up tennis and their son is becoming a baseball pro. Whatever life throws at them, they make the most of it. u

Amali’s airy, intimate aesthetic is inspired by the pace and poshness of the Mediterranean way of life. Enjoy diet friendly yet delectable items made mostly with vegetables, olive oil, cheese, grains, and fish. Greece and Italy are known for their healthy and earthy, yet delicious dishes, and Amali offerings include both traditional and modern twists on these historical cuisines. Your scrumptious plates are also sustainable – that’s because they work with local family farms, small scale fishing boats and natural winemakers. Savor your meal while sipping on a glass of wine – the hard part is choosing from a list of over 400 bottles!
Find your new favorite dish with their Frascatelli pasta, made with calamari, red prawn, king crab and breadcrumb. The Cavatelli, composed of braised lamb, saffron, pecorino, and mint, is also deliriously delightful. Recommended entrées include Cascun Farms Half Chicken with fingerling potatoes, brown butter and herbs and the Black Bass with grilled Treviso, black olives and bagna

Their desserts are also taken very seriously – don’t miss out on Olive Oil Cake with ricotta gelato, orange and fennel pollen, or the Chocolate, with morello cherry, luxardo cherry, and Chantilly. Make sure to stop by whenever you’re in the area – they offer lunch, brunch and midday menus. Amali’s extensive wine menu includes picks from Greece, Italy and France, and their creative cocktails, such as the Black Eagle with Hillrock solera cask bourbon, sweet vermouth and black walnut bitters, and La Dolce Vita, made with Bacardi, fig jam, sage and orange bitters, are expertly crafted. Jean Denoyer @ La Goulue NYC
La Goulue Palm Beach
JEAN DENOYER La Goulue NYC/Palm Beach By Hailey O’Connor i Photos by Annie Watt Al Fresco Dining in PB Legendary French restaurateur Jean Denoyer is bringing his renowned establishment, La Goulue, to Palm Beach, FL. Sister to the NYC favorite of the well-known, well-connected, and well-dressed, La Goulue Palm Beach is sure to be a huge success with Denoyer at the helm. After all, he has inspired and pioneered NYC’s French dining scene since the 1970’s. In the face of the coronavirus pandemic, many La Goulue patrons fled NYC to their homes in Palm Beach: an island where dining al fresco is de rigueur year-round. In this tropical paradise, La Goulue’s social capital and clientele will be a welcome addition to its already vibrant restaurant scene. Denoyer In France, Denoyer grew up above his family’s hotel. He came to America at the age of twenty-three and worked as a manager for a discotheque, instantly making it a hit. “While working there, people wanted to buy the jacket off my back. I got the comment often enough that I decided to just open a store!” Simply called Denoyer, it was the first all-European fashion boutique. Finding success on Madison Avenue, he opened one in Southampton and Palm Beach as well. It is only after the success of these endeavors that Denoyer decided it was
68 | resident.com
time to try his hand in the restaurant business. “Ultimately, being a restauranteur is simply in my bloodstream, a natural thing,” he says. La Goulue’s opening in 1973 prompted Denoyer’s return to the attic of his family’s hotel, collecting spare pieces of the paneling and décor that would help create the restaurant’s signature French atmosphere and milieu. As Denoyer says, “It’s not a New York restaurant. It’s a 1900s style bistro — and it’s very important to express the way it should be.” La Goulue Palm Beach boasts the same French Art Nouveau style— a considerable variation from Denoyer’s personal collection of Ruhlmann and Art Deco. Opening in October The opening of La Goulue in mid-October will be intentionally slow to allow the organic build of its reputation and, of course, to follow the new social distancing and pandemic guidelines. Denoyer does not believe in grand openings, and it would be inappropriate given the time as well. The restaurant’s large French doors open to the front, allowing for cross-breezes inside and comfortable outdoor dining when necessary. Iconic Restauranteur From discotheques to fashion boutiques, patisseries and restaurants, Denoyer is one of the icon-
ic entrepreneurs of our time. In fact, this will be his 40th opening! And, nearly all of these were restaurants —five in NYC. The geographic diversity of his restaurants is comparable to the diversity of his menus: French, French-Vietnamese, Japanese, Italian, and Continental foods can all be found on the various menus among his establishments. When asked about his favorite wine, Denoyer responded, “It’s actually a Red Sancerre by Vincent Pinar.” When asked about his favorite dishes on the menu at La Goulue, Denoyer hesitated — because he loves them all —eventually committing to “the Tuna Tartare Japanese style and the Cheese Soufflé.” The Tartare de Thon “La Goulue” Façon Japonais delivers a dazzling mixture of Ahi tuna tartare, wasabi miso seasoning, fresh coriander and crispy tempura bits. La Goulue’s legendary Cheese Soufflé is made with luxurious Gruyère and Parmesan cheese paired with white truffle oil that rises to perfection. La Goulue Palm Beach’s menu will include these and many other favorites its longtime patrons have come to love! On opening a restaurant, Denoyer’s motto has always been “to be realistic, but with good humor.” Perhaps more appropriate now, than ever. u lagouluerestaurant.com

et ready to paint the town palatable when you dine at Paisley, New York’s most unique Indian restaurant. Nestled in the chic neighborhood of Tribeca, Paisley aims to showcase some of India’s most secretive – yet tastiest – plates in innovative ways. Michelin Star Chef Peter Beck brings his mastery of flavorful cooking techniques to this gastronomic gem. Chef Beck, previously of the restaurant Tamarind, where he earned a Michelin Star and a Two-Star review from The New York Times, brings the most dynamic aspects of Indian food, art and culture to his present home at Paisley. A New Delhi native, Chef Beck, who spent time cooking in kitchens from Malaysia to Mumbai, brings his passion for Indian cuisine to every plate. He especially enjoys showcasing regional specialties and flavors from the Northern, Southern and Eastern parts of the country. This award-winning chef, who started out as a home chef when he was just a kid helping out his mother in the kitchen, made his way to a five-star hotel in Mumbai. It is here that he learned how to master French and Chinese dishes, and was eventually promoted to sous chef. Before his time at Tamarind, Chef Beck brought

He has even received a James Beard Award for culinary distinction, which has taken him to his current – and very delicious – destination. Owner Juthika Bedi is a former architect and interior designer who decided to pursue her dreams and open Paisley. Bedi also previously led the catering division as Director of Operations at the acclaimed restaurant Tulsi. Showcasing largely unknown dishes from India is a major source of pride for both Bedi and Chef Beck. This chic culinary spot also has their own beverage director who will make sure your bottle brings out each dish’s distinctive flavors. Small plates include Chilla Chevda, zucchini chickpea pancakes with white pea and corn crunchies, Vegan Samosas filled with green peas, potatoes and cumin, and Lahori Paneer, a crisped paneer roll with toasted cumin, coriander crispy okra and mint chutney. Meno Tea House With various and tasty takes on tea, MENO is the most exciting new tea shop that offers unique combinations of tea, coffee and juice drinks. This recently opened tea house, located on a quaint street near Washington Square Park, was named after a book written by Plato. You might come in for a caffeine boost, but they want you to savor each sip as you enjoy the elegance and simplicity of your surroundings – and beverage. Luckily for guests, this heightened sense of style continues into the spacious rooms and suites. Boasting 112 innovative rooms, Kimpton Onyx provides guests with an exquisite residential experience. chowder and signature Ruby wings. Main dishes include the grilled chicken sandwich with cheddar cheese and avocado, as well as grilled salmon and steak frites. Wake up and smell the coffee – and a tasty full American breakfast. When it comes to cocktails, let’s just say that the Hidden Gem, made with vodka grapefruit juice and muddled basil, plus their smooth High Fashion with Tanqueray gin, St. Germain liqueur, grapefruit, and rhubarb bitters, are some of Boston’s best kept secrets! JEAN SHAFIROFF Fashion Icon and the First Lady of Philanthropy takes on a New Venture - a TV Show! by Bennett Marcus Photographed By Michael Paniccia Hair By Henry de la Paz for Warren Tricomi Makeup by Kimara Ahnert and JP Ramirez
S
tyle Icon and philanthropist Jean Shafiroff has taken on a new role, this time as producer and host of a dynamic television show highlighting the work of actors, artists, heads of charities and even a US presidential candidate.
Fascinating personalities; a budding Kelly Ripa
The weekly show, “Successful Philanthropy,” airs on LTV in East Hampton and is available on both their YouTube channel as well as on Jean Shafiroff’s. It’s an exciting venture for Jean. When asked why she created the show she replies, “I’ve always loved the idea of hosting a TV show and when the pandemic came along, the timing especially seemed right for a show about philanthropy. The people I have met and the work they do is fascinating. My show is designed to motivate others - and also to create a little buzz and news!”
Independent-party presidential candidate Brock Pierce, an entrepreneur, cryptocurrency pioneer, and philanthropist, has been a guest, supermodel Carol Alt has taped an episode that will run in the future, and Dan Gasby, widower of the beloved restaurateur B. Smith, stirred up a flurry of press attention when he revealed on the show that he had broken off his relationship with ex-girlfriend Alex Lerner.
Emmy-nominated “ER” star Gloria Reuben, Brenda Simmons, founder of the yet-to-open Southampton African American Museum, and human rights activist Kerry Kennedy are set to appear on the show. Kennedy will appear post-election to talk about this year’s Robert F. Kennedy Ripple of Hope awards, which takes place in December and whose honorees will include Dr. Anthony Fauci and Colin Kaepernick, among others.

the pandemic, Jean made numerous television and radio appearances to advocate on behalf of food pantries, racial justice and animal welfare on national TV networks including Fox, NBC, CBS, WGN in Chicago and NY1 in New York. In the early days of the coronavirus, she also went on the air to quell rumors that animals can transmit Covid to humans – there has not been one case in the U.S. - and addressed one happy result of the pandemic, the fact that pet adoptions are up as people nationwide shelter at home. Jean promoted her 2016 book, “Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life by What You Give,” with a two-part national tour with local TV news appearances in almost every market in the United States, hitting multiple cities in each state from California to Utah to Illinois to Texas to Florida. Television is only the newest platform that Jean has embraced to bring attention to the philanthropic causes that she champions. She also writes about the topic for various publications, and serves on the boards of many charitable or-

A Catholic, Jean served as a trustee for the Jewish Board for 28 years and is now one of a few honorary trustees. She is also a past board member of the New York Women’s Foundation and remains very active in the organization. For her philanthropy, Jean has been honored numerous times, including by the Stonybrook Southampton Hospital, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, New York City Mission Society, Southampton Animal Shelter, Surgeons of Hope, Al Sharpton’s National Action Network, the Jewish Board and the Hadassah. of her 600,000+ Instagram followers, and also encouraging safety during the pandemic. “I try to remind people to keep wearing their masks, to keep social distancing, and to keep washing their hands. It’s not over.” Virtual galas and more
“I love doing the TV show, but of course I continue with my philanthropic work,” says Jean, which includes plenty of Zoom meetings and hosting fundraisers. This fall, she chaired or co-chaired virtual galas for the Dominican Women’s Development Center, the New York Women’s Foundation, the French Heritage Society, and Surgeons of Hope. Jean has also recently hosted numerous intimate outdoor fundraising gatherings, with social distancing and no more than 50 people, for organizations including the Southampton Animal Shelter, the Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, and the American Humane Society, as well as dinners in the backyard of her Southampton home, all in conformance with New York State guidelines for entertaining during the pandemic. “It’s different. Fundraising events are all much smaller, or virtual. We continue to raise money, it’s just in a whole new way,” she says. And priorities have shifted in some cases. For the New York City Mission Society, which serves New York’s most underserved people, they’ve created utility bags that include food, cleaning supplies for the home and essentials like Pampers for those with babies. “During this terrible pandemic, when people are out of work, we’re supplying goods to them.” Jean has also refocused some of her donations to the Covid-19 funds of several charities in light of the critical needs stemming from the pan-

STACEY BENDER Bending the Rules of Public Relations By Lauren Bens
98 | resident.com
S
ince branching out on her own, Stacey Bender, founder of The Bender Group PR, isn’t shy when it comes to bending the rules! This public relations powerhouse, who specializes in healthy food products, has also turned her firm into a family affair. After graduating from college in Florida, Stacey started working at the number one independent public relations agency in New York City called DAY, a woman owned business that eventually merged with Ogilvy & Mather. She joined other firms after Oglivy & Mather, but with four kids under the age of seven, Stacey decided to start her own company in order to find a way to stay connected with her clients while cutting out her commute. “My goals shifted. I found myself on the mommy track, but my career was still so important to me. I knew if I had the right environment I could thrive and be a leader for my children. I had flexibility of where and when to work and not miss the moments that mattered most. My bosses weren’t necessarily sympathetic at the time. My current clients, many of whom are like family, range from startups to blue chip companies, and many have been with me since the beginning of my career. I love what I do, and it gives me so much joy. My clients also do great work in terms of community service and really have wonderful products and services. It’s been so great helping them grow and communicate their messages. “ Since starting Bender Group, which has been around for over 25 years, Stacey has shown that it’s possible to be a working mother in modern times and continues to inspire other fierce female leaders in the industry. “I idealized the women who started DAY while I was still in college – they were mothers and businesswomen. They were such an inspiration to me, and I stayed close with them throughout the years. They taught me the passion I have now for my clients. I always tell women to do what you love and do it with a passion and you will thrive. Just make time for everything and you can have it all – and more!” Stacey is delighted to see how far public relations has come when it comes to more women being given upper level management positions across the board, as well as the way in which media has moved to digital publications. “When I started, everything was about hard copy publications, as well as radio and television, and now there is a whole online and digital world which is very exciting. There are so many ways to build your social channels in order to enhance a client’s reach.” Bender Group is a boutique agency – with a lot of big ideas – as well as knowledge and expertise. They remain close to their clients and close to the media. “We truly become part of the company’s marketing mix. We’re not a vendor, but rather we become part of our client’s culture. We become a part of their company and their industry and they feel the same about us. We continuously get great results and have a very close relationship with our clients, meaning we call each other at any time. The real key to our success is that we go beyond – and we are also very strategic, hands on and have an extremely diverse portfolio of services we offer.”
Since finding her niche in the food sector when she started her career at the number one independent food agency in US – Stacey has worked with dozens of well-known brands that she has helped turn into a household names. Stacey, a sports enthusiast and runner, found her passion for food when she started doing pro-bono PR work for sporting events and their sponsors, many of whom were healthy food and beverage companies. “I started working on clean label foods before that was even a buzz word.” Today her client base is a range of consumer products as well as lifestyle products and services. Stacey’s children, who now all live between New Jersey and Florida, have each worked for their mom at some point – her oldest son Hayden Hammerling is currently a partner in the business, making his mom very proud! All four of her children – Haley, Hayden, Heather and Hayes all have worked with The Bender Group at one time or another. Her professional legacy is sure to live on, but more importantly, so is her advocacy when it comes to helping young people overcome addiction. Stacey lost her youngest son, Hayes, to an addiction disorder a year and a half ago, and has since his tragic and untimely death, she is devoted to raising awareness of the disease to help others. During this incredibly painful time, she credits her amazing family for her strength and also her clients with being so patient. After her loss, a friend, Amy Lazarus Goldberg reached out to her, as she had tragically lost her son Jake only two years prior. Amy had connected with Eve Goldberg, who also had lost her son Isaac, about five years prior to the same disease. Eve founded BigVision NYC, www. bigvision.nyc , a non-profit in honor of her son, to help bridge the gap for young people in recovery with love and support for a sober life. Amy encouraged Stacey to join Eve and her foundation in the hopes it would give her some comfort and would allow her to share her her public relations skills and vision to help other young people not suffer the same consequences she, Amy, Eve and too many others have endured. “BigVision fills a gap in the world of recovery. So many young people who are struggling leave recovery programs and come out stronger and sober, but there is the loneliness factor in recovery process and how to integrate themselves back into society and remain sober. This when most young people lose the battle. Being a part of this foundation has been such a meaningful way for me to keep the memory of Hayes alive and speak about him in ways that are productive. I’m using my positivity and zest for life to help as much as I can.” Stacey has shared her personal struggle in order to help others, and says her children, husband, family, friends and clients have really kept her going. With clients ranging from food products to fitness, as well as her community outreach involvement, Stacey is a superhero in both her personal and professional life. u thebendergrouppr.com

KARLA BALLARD
Vice-Presidential Candidate of the Independence Party of New York By Hailey O’Connor Aaron Burr’s Descendent Karla Ballard, the Independence Party of New York’s Vice-Presidential candidate and Brock Pierce’s running-mate, is fulfilling her family legacy through their 2020 Presidential campaign; Ballard is a descendant of Aaron Burr, the legendary rival of Alexander Hamilton and third Vice President of the United States. She admittedly feels a close connection with American history but does not disillusion herself that it must always be revered. While her “5x great-grandfather” was integral in the foundation of America, Ballard argues that “History needs healing, and we need some re-writing: his-story must become our-story.” For Ballard, it is time to heal the perennial wounds the United States has brought upon marginalized peoples.
Democratizing Abundance Ballard has already developed a solution to further the inclusivity of marginalized low-income Americans; she founded YING, a peer-to-peer skill-and-time-sharing platform. Ballard believes the United States does not have a resource problem, but an allocation problem. To rectify this, allocation through personal networks is key: “Everybody has a skill, and we must recognize the hidden value we have.” This attitude motivated the creation of YING, a structure that facilitates

her ultimate goal — democratizing abundance. As Vice President, Ballard would incentivize the private sector to propel innovation within this landscape of individual social capital and value. On a local level, she advocates for “skill banks” that attend to civic needs — including, but not limited to, issues such as health/medicine, hunger, and parenting. After all, if Ballard learned one thing from her work in Congress Park, it would be that communication and collaboration with residents on a smaller stage is essential to success. This is why she and Pierce host weekly Town Halls; through this, the pair better understands a breadth of the nation’s local issues. Ballard elaborated, “Hearing, listening, and co-creating solutions are how you properly represent voters.”
Federal Commerce Commission In the same vein, Ballard seeks to “close out the final mile” concerning educational inequities. Her appointment at the Federal Commerce Commission prompted her understanding of the broadband spectrum, to witness that “not all broadband is made equal.” Many rural, suburban, and even urban communities are without stable internet access; the pandemic consequence of online classes would only further the educational disparity, as the students cannot learn remotely without broadband access. In particular, Bal-
lard is proud to bring this conversation to her Vice-Presidential candidacy. Education also must emphasize environmental awareness and sustainability, claims Ballard. Teaching students at a young age to be “green” will give greater opportunity to instill future eco-conscientious policy. Alongside Pierce, Ballard will motivate the private sector for carbon abatements and innovations within plastics, to turn the recyclable into energy.
Indigenous Relationships In the weeks leading up to election day, nobody can say Ballard and her team won’t be busy. The main focus is to build relationships with other Americans, thus disseminating the movement for political independency, pro-technology, and nonpartisanship. Her three foci within these conversations are: healing America’s Indigenous relationships; bolstering mental health support for Veterans and First Responders; and working on racial justice. Karla Ballard is an experienced leader and understands how to properly reach the American people. For her, “this campaign is just the beginning.” She continues, “Educating. Informing. Inspiring. That’s what this campaign is about.” u brock.vote.
BROCK PIERCE
Presidential Candidate of the Independence Party of New York By Hailey O’Connor Brock the Vote Philanthropist, business innovator, and 2020 independent presidential candidate, Brock Pierce is taking his entrepreneurial talents to the political arena. Pierce believes that his administration can bring about an operating system upgrade for our country, an “America 2.0.” From his experience as a systems designer, Pierce believes that to achieve “America 2.0” we must amend our nation’s approach to progress and incentivization. He argues that the United States has based its success on maximizing its Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which assumes maximum use of land and other limited resources, rather than sustaining and replenishing those resources. His philosophy is to change the game we’re playing, holding our government accountable by measuring how effectively it supports the historic American values of “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.”
surement by which to track meaningful goals. “Pursuit of Happiness” is achieved by benchmarking our nation’s success through the voices of its people. Pierce uses the country of Bhutan as an example here; Bhutan uses Gross National Happiness (GNH) as both a philosophy and an index to measure holistic notions of progress. Why can’t the United States do the same? These three ideals-turned-evaluations depend upon another core idea for Pierce: having complete sovereignty over one’s body — you decide what you eat, who you want to be with, what is injected in your body, and what you will consent to. Consent is a major point for Pierce, particularly as it relates to technology and data mining. He argues that people need to know and understand what they are relinquishing to big companies; they should also have the ability to withdraw their data and their consent.
Pursuit of Happiness Life, according to Pierce, is a primary yardstick — with quality of life and life expectancy being examples of things worth measuring. Clean air and clean water, healthier food, and access to effective, affordable healthcare all fall under this umbrella. The measurement of Liberty reflects the accessibility of freedoms, the honoring of rights, and the fairness of justice. In this regard, America — and by that, Pierce means the American people — must pursue justice objectively and define units of mea-
Monetary Policy Pierce’s monetary philosophy is to create sensible regulations that incentivize banks to support financial inclusivity. Pierce supports the creation of tools to democratize the financial system for a broader set of individuals to participate in the global economy. With his experience pioneering crypto-currency, Pierce has been “educating the countless entrepreneurs and large-scale enterprise-based CEOs across the world and presenting them with solutions for his whole career”, spanning over 20
years. According to Pierce, technology is amoral — and it is time for the United States government to knowledgeably make use of technology for the benefit of all Americans. “His-story” Concerning more specific policies, Pierce condemns the repeating of history — or what he dubs his-story. Beginning with indigenous rights, Americans must acknowledge the tragic harms caused and begin a process of healing for all marginalized communities. Low-income Americans are included in that latter sentiment. Healthcare for all is one of his goals, but within a single-payer system that retains the competition of the private sector. Pro-business, Pierce is a believer that competition breeds innovation and talent. His environmental policies support this notion: innovation to assuage the short-term consequences of fossil fuel emissions, for instance. He also supports a carbon fee to incentivize innovations in sustainability. Brock Pierce, 39, understands the impact technology has on the United States. What he may lack in political experience he makes up for with his experience and development in and across multiple arenas in the private sector. His movement is here to “redefine what it is to be American”, based on 21st century extrapolations of “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness”. u brock.vote.

SAL STRAZZULLO Strazzullo Law: NYC & Italy By R. Couri Hay
New York Law School There are few lawyers in New York City who are more committed to their clients than Sal Strazzullo, and it’s no surprise that Sal is the type of lawyer to take on tough cases. Growing up as a first-generation Italian-American, he attended public school in the middle-class neighborhood of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. His high school had a graduation rate of 40%, but that did not deter Sal from valuing and pursuing his own education; Sal later attended John Jay University where he studied Political Science, before going to New York Law School. The Real Deal, WSJ, CNN & Fox In 2001, Sal opened Strazzullo Law, a general practice firm specializing in all areas of the law, including real estate and estate planning, as well as criminal and civil litigation. His firm was founded while the devastation of 9/11 lingered throughout the city. He had taken the bar exam only months before, essentially leaving his future up in the air. “I didn’t know whether or not I passed until November,” Sal says. Since then, Strazzullo Law has become the go-to firm for real-estate closings, representing buyers and sellers in all areas of the transaction. But cancer hasn’t
stopped, so neither will we,” says Chloe Lipman, executive director for the American Cancer Society of Greater New York City. “On November 10, I want everyone to do two things: order dinner from your favorite local restaurant, and join us online as we fight cancer and celebrate the spirit of New York’s indomitable culinary industry at the first-ever virtual Taste of Hope.” Now in its 15th year, Taste of Hope has raised over $1.8 Million to support the American Cancer Society’s mission and goal of eliminating cancer as a major health problem. and wellness results in a way that is best for you. According to this skincare superhero, “it’s crucial to reboot the skin this season, especially after months of sun exposure and wearing masks for long periods of time. Of course, every individual’s needs are different, and treatments must be chosen with great awareness, however, now is the perfect time to explore treatments that are a bit more invasive to reverse the damage caused by sun exposure during the summer months.” Vicki’s favorite treatments this season include everything from microdermabrasion to radiofrequency to keep you feeling refreshed. Try some of Vicki’s top tips for staying on top of your skincare regimen: Microdermabrasion: This minimally invasive ‘power peel’ is an ideal treatment to get this season as you should avoid sun exposure before and after the treatment. Clear & Brilliant: Stay fresh faced all fall long
with Clear & Brilliant Laser Resurfacing, which evens out the skin tone, minimizes pores and reboots your skin by addressing early signs of aging. Microneedling: If you want to minimize or remove scar tissue and lax skin, Microneedling is for you. Brighten your appearance with tiny needles that run over your skin’s surface. Radiofrequency: Vicki can give you a pain-free facelift with this treatment which uses Radiofrequency to boost collagen and elastin productions, leaving your skin firm, lifted and tightened. Perfect for targeting loose skin, especially around the neck and chin areas. Lymphatic Drainage: This minimally invasive therapeutic massage uses light pressure and rhythmic strokes to increase your lymph flow and reduce the toxins in your body. It helps improve overall skin’s radiance, reduces swelling and over time, and creates a more sculpted look to the face. Get ready to face fall with your best face forward! u vickimorav.com

LINJIE DENG “The art show is virtual, but the power of my art is real.” by Hailey O’ConnoR I Photographed by Udo Spreitzenbarth Shot on location at 860 Park Avenue #3 New York, NY 10075 | Listed by Samantha Katcher of NextStopNY Real Estate

is art has involved creating an avatar of himself, blending American modern culture with ancient Chinese Yin-Yang philosophy, and portraying the virus crisis and social unrest. He is Linjie Deng, a notable exception among the big names in Chinese contemporary art. Linjie works in multimedia — Chinese ink, acrylic, newspaper, and canvas — and is known for his surreal depictions of how Eastern and Western cultures react in entirely different ways on the same issue. As a visual artist, his rise to prominence at a young age makes him stand out among emerging artists across the globe, especially since throughout history, many young artists from an Eastern background have often been overlooked, or recognized only belatedly, in a field dominated by Western artists.
The distinction between Western and Eastern art does not concern Linjie. “I never think about it,” he said in a recent interview.
Perched on a chair in the magazine’s Park Avenue apartment, he answered the Resident’s Artist Questions.
Linjie was born in 1992. He left his home in China in 2015 to pursue a Master’s Degree in fine arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and has lived in NYC ever since. Linjie’s upbringing in a large fireworks family business in Shanxi Province helped form his compelling visual language of bold colors, vibrant abstract forms, and autobiographical cues, leading to solo exhibitions at institutions including the Hamptons Virtual Art Fair, Dream Tattoo calligraphy public show, and the New York Con Artist Collection.
THE HAMP TONS V I RT UA L A RT S H O W
In his recent work, Linjie pays careful attention to narrative and interaction. He believes art can rebuild a beautiful world after COVID-19 — and he feels compelled to be a part of this moment.
1. Why was your virtual art show named Chameleon 2020? 2020 has thrown New Yorkers so many curveballs: a virus crisis, stay-at-home orders, curfews, economic uncertainty, and national social unrest. I have been here in New York to witness this fast-changing, unique period. I have observed how people can — and do — adapt their lifestyles to address a crisis. This resilience is a survival technique also used by chameleons. So, the theme of my solo exhibition: Chameleon 2020.

2. What was the inspiration for your COVID-19 series and Yin-Yang series?
What is the meaning of your series: Make America United Again?
2. When you start a new piece, where do you begin?
My art is not only about beauty but also about communication. In the COVID series, I portray the messages of effective protection information alongside my deep love of New York. In the Yin-Yang series, I created contemporary calligraphy works consisting of four sets of mutually opposing and coexisting words: freedom and hope, proud and humble, me and you, me and we. For the calligraphy characters, I utilized 5 different styles of Chinese Calligraphy fonts from 10 different time periods. I chose the particular characters for their beauty and style.
This series is directed to the Asian American community. As a Chinese artist in America, I hope that they can be a real part of the healing process. I have chosen to incorporate traditional Chinese Calligraphy art in combination with English language newspaper articles as a way to send a message in an artistic form that Asian Americans can readily identify with. At a moment when every message of healing is important, I’d like to inspire everyone, Asian Americans in particular, to join this movement: Make America United Again.
I define my works as conceptual art. In conceptual art, the idea or concept is the most important aspect of the work. When I begin a new piece, all of the planning and decisions are made beforehand and the execution is an affair. The idea becomes a machine that makes the art. All the steps in the process are of importance. The idea itself, even if not made visual, is as much a work of art as any finished artwork. All intervening steps — scribbles, sketches, drawings, failed works, models, studies, thoughts, conversations — are of interest. The steps that show the thought processes are sometimes more interesting than my final artworks.
I chose the word pairings because each set of words evokes diametric approaches to today’s relevant issues. For example, face masks: individual rights v. protection of society, or, to compare cultures: Western Individualism v. Eastern Collectivism. So, I put the two different kinds of “reactions” in each Yin-Yang symbol.
3. In the United States, we have heard so many times: “Make America Great Again”.

EXPLORE THE KEY TO A RT W O R K S W I T H L I N J I E 1. What is your day like? And what is your work schedule? I usually arrive at my studio at 10 a.m. and work until 8 or 9 p.m. If I am in the studio at night, I read and write notes. I find it helpful to reflect on my work of the past day, as well as the day’s events.
3. How do you know when you’re done with a painting? I don’t think about a specific finish point. But I have a high personal standard for my artworks. I am finished when I am feeling super comfortable showing it to the public.
ART
114 | resident.com
4. For the virtual art show, people only can view it online. Do you still keep the same standard? Yes, of course, the standard of quality remains the same. For example, one day I totally lost my temper because the piece needed to be painted on white newsprint. Just to be safe, I found at least 30 different kinds of this material. Believe it or not, every single one was a different shade of white, and none were the white that I envisioned! Such things can make me crazy — even the small details, ones most viewers wouldn’t be able to distinguish until I pointed them out. As to the virtual viewing, there is a very complicated additional step in displaying your artwork. Photos of the piece must be taken and the piece has to been seen in the virtual show in the exact same way that you would want it seen in person. And this can take hours and hours, just for one piece. You really won’t know if it meets your standard until the photo you have finally chosen is then test-placed on the virtual site. So, for my recent Hamptons show, this resulted in dozens of hours of work.
5. As an artist, what are your thoughts on virtual v. gallery shows? I would rather not have a specific boundary between online and offline, virtual and physical. The beauty of my virtual art show is that it’s a global exhibition, and accessible to everyone at any time. My art show is virtual, but the power of my art is real. My virtual art show and Instagram accounts link up to each other so that I can really start a global dialogue. Making sure that we have a diverse group of voices is incredibly important to me at this time. I’d love to do more art shows online.
ART
PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL 1. Do you worry about the comments of the audience about your artwork and you? It doesn’t really matter if the viewers understand my concepts when they view my art. Once it is out of my hands, I have no control over the way a viewer will perceive the work. Different people will understand the same artwork in a different way. For example, my Yin-Yang Series artwork has evoked reactions across the spectrum. I think artists are artists. I don’t like the label of “Chinese Artist”. I hope my audience can remember me in the future by what I did, not where I was born 28 years ago.
2. What do you wear when you work? Jeans or nothing. 3. After COVID-19, would you mind doing an open studio while you paint? Generally, I wouldn’t let anybody watch me paint. I don’t want to be conscious of myself. I think it would be like somebody watching you have sex — painting is that personal to me. That is why I don’t enjoy doing live shows on social media, even when it is necessary.
4. What embarrasses you? When someone tells another person that they should Google me. And … nothing shows up. Very often because they spelt Linjie wrong!
5. When is your next show? I hope soon! I am currently working on a new project for a group show of SOHO New York.

GEORGES BERGÈS The Finest Gallerist By Christopher A. Pape
T
here exists in the representation of art at Georges Bergès’ gallery a life force, a humor and above all a pathos, which particularly belongs to him and which may be qualified as specifically “Bergesian.” Today, through his ever need for betterment and growth, these qualities have become recognized and established. No longer can we think of him as the “Maverick Gallerist,” but rather, and with no hint of exaggeration, “New York’s Finest Gallerist.” And yet, even this moniker, has become, since we last profiled him, outdated. For Georges, with his desire to conquer new feats, has opened a second location in one of the toniest sections of Berlin and has his eye on a third location (which as much as I’d like to divulge its location is a mystery to me too). I should also like to add there is an inquietude and a sort of restlessness that not only distinguish his personality and style of business, but which is also pervasive throughout the art he represents. Take, for example, the art of Jean Schmidel. A German artist with no formal training, whose figurative work is other-wordily and, dare I say, off-putting to some. Yet, with Georges’ ingenuity, he has grown the artist’s visibility, status and most importantly (after all the art world is still a business) his prices. His collectors have lapped up Jean’s art; this is true for all of his artists whom he carefully picks and cultivates – it is not only Georges’ trademark but one of his business attributes he is most proud. Another example is the work of Khara Oxier-Mor, an American selftaught (just like Jean, it does seem that Georges
favors those who follow their own path, perhaps no coincidence) artist whose frenetic and feminine (with a touch of the macabre) work concentrates on the human body. Again, like the Midas touch, Georges’ touch has turned Khara’s work into gold. Investors, collectors and art enthusiasts have all fallen for this newcomer. Beyond the little-known artists that Georges loves to pluck from obscurity, he revels in working with those personalities famous for things other than art. The case in point – Sylvester Stallone. Famed as an actor and creator of the world-renowned Rocky franchise, few people, beyond Georges knew of Mr. Stallone’s artistic prowess. And while some critics might complain that it is a bit of a stunt (and maybe there is a touch of truth to that assessment), Georges knows better. Stallone’s work is powerful, timely and like all of his other artists, collectable. Having recently spent a few nights breaking bread with him, I’ve gotten to know Georges even better. There are a lot of similarities between him and me and I see in him a passion, an almost pathological need for success, which I’d like to think I share with him. But be that as it may, a tangible example of what I write was when I had dinner with him and one his top collectors - a young woman executive at one of the major technology companies in the United States. Her resume is impressive, but even more so, was Georges’ ability to speak frankly, directly and honestly to her about what pieces she needed to buy. His ability to assuage her concerns and
advise her was impressive. It is not without some jealousy that I wish I had his ability to speak of the ins-and-outs of art with the command and unpretentiousness that Georges does. But to the fundamental question what does an art gallerist do? That’s a question I put directly to him. His answer was intriguing, “A gallerist is really the bridge between the collector and the artist. There is a synergistic relationship which transcends time and space between the artist and his gallerist or art dealer; they’re a team, it’s a marriage, as it were. It’s the gallerist that ensures that the artist and his work that are too important to ignore are not ignored.” A man of action, grace, eloquence and business-savvy, Georges is the type of promoter and representative that all artists should dream of having. If I were an artist, I know I could find no one more passionate, more desirous of promoting my unique brand of art than Georges Bergès. And for the art collector, you can find no one more trustworthy, more willing to find the best deal and no one more deserving of the accolade, “Finest Gallerist,” than Mr. Bergès. If you find yourself in Berlin or in Soho, make your way to this truly superlative gallery and take it from me, “buy, buy, buy,” for you’ll find no art more captivating, indulging and powerful than the art at Georges Bergès Galleries and no gallery owner more accommodating and wanting, willing and waiting to serve your needs! u bergesgallery.com

ANN STRASSMAN Boston’s Best Conquers NY and Beyond By george wayne GEORGE WAYNE - I thought to myself after seeing your work that Julian Schnabel was also sort of doing the same with his newest work. What, with you both using an irregular medium as the ‘canvas’. Schnabel’s new work at Pace are paintings on this particular fabric that he found covering a fruit market in Mexico. And your paintings are done on appliance heavy wrapping cardboard you probably found at a Walmart dumpster... Talk about the origins of this notion of heavy-ply cardboard as the vessel for your latest paintings? AS- Sometimes inspiration follows boredom. Af-
120 | resident.com
ter I had spent three hours doing quick sketches of a lovely but boring young man, I could not face another similar session. I found paper bags with interesting graphics and with charcoal in hand attended the next session. The machine graphics and brown paper against the charcoal marks were great looking. Paper bags led to cardboard. I wanted to paint on something that had machine graphics- grabbed some boxes and learned how the surface worked both physically and esthetically- again I found the results quite appealing. GW- First sight of your work I found it so primal and revolutionary. This notion of painting
on cardboard. Then after much thought, I realized that the notion isn’t that revolutionary after all. Come to think of it-- the great 18th Century French master Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres famously painted on linen and cardboard way back in the 1800s. AS- I choose to work on cardboard because I like the contrast between the machine marks and the hand of the painter. GW- I am totally in thrall of your work. Your gallerist calls it ‘’expressive realism’’. It is all so raw - yet so fresh and intimate. The whole
notion of discord and discard and tumult and pillage wafting through the zeitgeist. When I first saw the cardboard boxes I wondered, seriously, did the artist find these cardboard boxes right outside the gallery on West Broadway in the aftermath of the mass looting that rocked Soho? You could have easily got those boxes from the looted Leica camera shop next door to this gallery earlier this summer. So I find the work at once, insightful and at once ironic. AS- When I first started to use cardboard I spent many hours raiding the disposal areas of appliance stores an rummaging in the garbage room of the local grocery store. The morphing of a ubiquitous, throw-away material into art might be ironic but one could say the same about the piece of linen or wood that holds a Titian or Picasso though the cardboard brings a contrast and a history and a commentary about our society. GW- Do you consider this work a new way of looking at the world? AS- I doubt it- there are so many people who share our society, our planet and the motivations, feelings, experiences, opinions are really quite finite. I think that the innate ability to focus, to think clearly and analytically bring forth what may be a unique “language” that is new or different, but the basic take on our world is held by many people. GW- Street scenes...a snapshot in time. Talk me through the initial process of the documentation here. AS- I discovered that when someone knows they are being watched, they respond by skewing their natural body language. The solution was stealth. I began hiding behind trees or scaffolding and taking photos. GW- What is the representation you are trying to portray? The language your quasi-portraiture seeks to express is what? AS- I want to really discover what lies under the skin and make an image so compelling that the viewer feels the heartbeat of the creature. GW- This work seems to capture a certain particular milieu. The White Anglo-Saxon Protestant. Is this a deliberate statement? AS-My subjects are simply a function of opportunity and visual appeal. I will not use an image that I find demeaning, too intimate or embarrassing
to anyone. I don’t like caricatures and have great respect for anyone I choose to paint. GW- There is a febrile atmosphere to your paintings. Is your fascination ultimately just one with the human form? AS- My fascination is with life. I paint trees and dogs with the same intensity and attention to detail that I employ on people. I feel that all living things are connected. GW- Talk about the notion of the gaze as it relates to these paintings. AS- I like to catch my subjects when they are meditative, exploring their own domain, involved with themselves- their vision is inward, personal. GW- Your painterly phrasing here....expound on the thought. AS- I am an athletic painter- I like big brushes, interesting marks, accidents but I also respond to good craftsmanship. I am obsessed with “getting it”, finding the magic that makes a work come alive. GW- There is no influence of the current protest movement in your work. One assumes this is no accident. AS- I can only tell the truth by commenting on the things I have experienced. That said, there are many experiences that I have had that I will not comment on because they are too personal. GW- Talk about your time studying at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. AS- I did not know what I wanted to be when I grew up. I walked into the school and fell in love. My art experience was very limited, I could not draw and wanted to learn so badly. I quickly learned how to handle paint. I loved clay even though it frequently went flying off my wheel. I was so happy! GW- If GW were to regard you as a blue-bloodBrahmin-type-from-Boston. Would that be far off a description? AS- You have no idea how far off it is. GW- Well, GW regards you- without questionas one of Boston’s leading figurative painters without question! Looking forward to seeing even more of your oeuvre. AS- I look forward to many more hours in the studio making the images in my head a reality. u

ainter, sculptor, and former dancer Gabriela Gil has announced her first New York solo exhibition. The Honduras-born, NYC-based artist will show the first volume of her “Time and Space” series starting Thursday, December 3 through Sunday, December 20, 2020 in Soho which will be shown in-person and virtually. Gabriela explains, “Timing is important in this project, because I am purposely taking advantage of the Covid lockdowns to present this body of work in creative ways.” “I’ve been working on this series for two years,” Gil says. “My previous work was more figurative, and this new series breaks away from the figure completely. This is making way to abstract work that explores line, color and rhythm.”
“TIME AND SPACE” Artist Gabriela Gil’s First Solo Art Exhibition in New York By Ann Grenier
In volume one of the series, Gil will show roughly 20 highly detailed miniature sets, inspired by the hand-made nativity scenes she saw as a child in Latin America, each with small paintings. The miniatures will then be displayed alongside large-scale paintings from the series. Despite having worked on the project for years, Gil says that the Covid-19 pandemic recontextualized her vision. She says that she is leaning into the fact that people have been exposed to high levels digital content during the Covid-19 lockdown – the time during which she created the second half of the series. “We are all consuming content on this tiny screen,” she says. “So, the idea was to create a play on perception. A lot of my paintings in this series are really big. I wanted the virtual exhibition itself to become an artwork.” Gil has moved throughout South and North America for her entire life and that “constant migration” shaped her multicultural perspective and nurtured her “interest in art as a way to transcribe personal experience using a unique visual language.” This series is heavily inspired by Latin America - its colors, its textures, its dances, its nature, and its warmth. However, I wouldn’t say this series encompasses my whole Latin American experience. Maybe another way to put it is that I am exploring my roots or going back to my roots with Time and Space, with the intention of building from there. “I thought, if we can’t actually go somewhere physically, what is a way we can travel to a different place without really going?” she says. “And if I can only show the content virtually, on the tiny screen, then why not flip it on its head, go all the way and do something that would be harder to do in real life at a physical showing.” u gabrielagil.com

A STATELY CONNECTICUT ESTATE 358 Lukes Wood Road, New Canaan, Connecticut By Lauren Bens
A
n impressive country retreat with a modern rustic flair set on nearly five acres, 358 Lukes Wood Road in New Canaan, Connecticut is nothing short of stunning. The luxurious estate features a seven-bedroom, 14,000-square-foot colonial home along with a guest cottage, detached barn with an indoor basketball court, gunite pool, pool pavilion and tennis court. Understated elegance defines the approach to this circa-1941 home recently restored by the CT-based, nationally-acclaimed architecture firm of Shope Reno Wharton, with interior design by Marsha Russell of Satinwood, Ltd. and landscape by Hollander Design. “As you enter the magnificent estate, you are quickly aware of the high level of design. An architectural gem, it is all in the unique details,” said Wendy Brainard, one of the listing brokers from William Raveis Real Estate. “From the French-imported reclaimed oak floors, to the handcrafted steel windows and doors, to the layers and textures of unexpected materials, every room is a moment, punctuated by dramatic lighting and unbelievable views of the expansive grounds.”

“It is a perfect country haven where privacy abounds in a bespoke setting that enchants every sense,” adds Heidi Poisella, co-listing broker from William Raveis Real Estate. “Buyers are looking for retreats today, and 358 Lukes Wood delivers on multiple levels.” UNIQUE FEATURES The heart and soul of any home, the kitchen and breakfast room are an eye-catching mix of elegant natural stone and distinctive wood accents. Double is the trend here with double islands, double ovens and double dishwashers to meet every entertaining need. Just off the kitchen are multiple pantry spaces and a private section for party preparations designed to be away from guests’ view. To round out the entertaining needs, and for the serious wine collectors, there is a 500-bottle, climate-controlled wine cellar ready for stocking. One of the top priorities for homebuyers today is the reimagined home office and this estate offers several options. There is a multi-purpose room
that doubles as a home office and a second computer office with easy access between the kitchen and mudroom. The space can also be used for the dog lovers in the family as a place to nest comfortably and securely while the owner is away. On the second floor, the Master Suite immediately draws you in with a stunning stone fireplace as the focal point, along with a vaulted ceiling, a sitting area saturated with light and views of the magnificent property with French doors opening up to an expansive outdoor hardwood deck. It also boasts his and hers bathrooms with spa showers and a soaking tub. Both bathrooms feature iron-framed windows and doors and natural wood vanity for the special feel of a rustic and luxurious home-spa retreat. With both design and ease in mind, the bathrooms are separated by a beautiful walk-in dressing room that allows for displaying designer shoes, jewelry and accessories. OUTDOOR SPLENDOR In an effort to bring the outdoors in, the current owner added a glasswalled sun room, complemented by a rough stone floor. It is the perfect spot to sneak away for a quiet moment and bask in natural light and views, or enjoy a favorite show on a television that rises out of a hiding space when not in use. Within the exquisite landscape, this home offers the coveted outdoor lifestyle so many people are seeking today. With a premium gunite pool and spa surrounded by a hardwood deck and elevated pavilion, along with a stunning tennis court, this is truly resort-like living at its best. If tennis is not your game, adjacent to the court is a rustic barn that has been transformed into a basketball court with parquet floors and Glass sliding Barn doors. “This home is luxurious and spacious but also exudes warmth without being cavernous,” says Brainard. “It truly exceeds the usual trends of residential design and finishings while complementing the long history of innovative design seen throughout New Canaan.” Located 40 miles from midtown Manhattan, New Canaan, Conn. is an idyllic, leafy suburb with award-winning schools, beautiful architecture and a bustling downtown with a neighborhood vibe. Architecture and design have been a prime focus in New Canaan since the mid-century when a group of innovative modern architects from the Harvard Graduate School of Design migrated to New Canaan. The team of revered architects included Phillip Johnson, Marcel Breuer, Eliot Noyes, Landis Goris and John M. Johansen and came to be known as the “Harvard Five.” Their influence endures today with more than 80 mid-century modern homes still standing, and countless other homes and buildings designed with their inspiration. A family-oriented community with more than 20,000 residents, New Canaan has seen its real estate market soar in 2020, specifically due to an influx of city dwellers seeking more space and all the unique features of a suburban lifestyle.
