A TIME FOR CELEBRATION

I

t’s hard to believe that 2018 is coming to a close, it feels like the year passed in the blink of an eye. As we say goodbye to this year there are many things worth celebrating as we usher in 2019- our family, healthy, friends, and freedom. For December we featured the colorful larger than life artist- Christo whose celebrated body of public artwork with his late wife Jeanne Claude has touched millions of lives around the world through a visceral connection. His gifted artistic vision and colorful life has been shaped by war and revolution, political uprising and asylum which has given him the strength and fortitude to overcome the impossible.

Though temporary, his large scale artworks can take decades before they are actually realized and Christo candidly discusses the real stories behind creating his massive public projects. December is a time to celebrate the arts with Art Basel Miami kicking off this month. The impressive Warhol retrospective at the Whitney on display through the end of March was the inspiration for our Nod to Mod fashion shoot that channels Edie Sedgwick and The Factory Girl. As holidays are all about a whirlwind of parties, we also shot our gorgeous holiday fashion spread at the $39 Million Holiday House that has been meticulously designed

by some of the leading interior designers around the country. Of course with the holidays, winter travel and New Year’s Eve destinations are on our minds. Our eye candy destinations this month feature the warm climes of the Caribbean and Mexico, sophisticated cities of Europe, and the splashy destination of Las Vegas. Whether you are home for the holidays or jetting off to an exotic locale, take the time to celebrate life as we say goodbye to 2018 and welcome 2019 with open arms. THE HOLIDAY HOUSE RETURNS TO NYC By w. a. muller

T

his season the Holiday House has opened in a luxurious, new eight-bedroom limestone townhouse at 118 East 76th Street on one of New York’s most beautiful blocks. Founded by 21-year veteran breast cancer survivor Iris Dankner, Holiday House NYC donates all gala and ticket sales proceeds to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation® (BCRF), and has become one of the City’s leading interior design events. Over 20 talented design firms transformed each room of the newly-built 32-foot-wide mansion, creating luxuriously appointed spaces and innovative designs loosely inspired by “holiday” themes, such as a “Getaway in Paris,” the

“Crysthanamum Festival” and the “Modern Royal.” “We are delighted to be honoring our dear friends and colleagues Design Chairs Thom Filicia, Carson Kressley and Vicente Wolf and our inspiring Honorary Chair Tracy Anderson. We are incredibly grateful to Richard Steinberg and Douglas Elliman for providing our gifted designers with such a marvelous canvas on which to work for the 11th edition of Holiday House NYC. Together we are building awareness about and funds for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation,” says Ms. Dankner. For the first time this year, Holiday House NYC will feature fully “shoppable” rooms. Everything - including furnishings, lighting, and accessories

– from a living/dining room will be available for sale on One Kings Lane. The house’s library will be transformed into an on-site shopping experience with an array of 20th Century vintage furnishings, home décor and jewelry from Deluxe NYC. In celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and women’s empowerment, Holiday House is delighted to launch a series of womenbased/run initiatives and programs which include panel discussions and lectures, book signings, the debut of a new design podcast series, and a young designers’ event.

BERENICE S. ROTHENBERG Become Your Best Self at Berenice Electrolysis & Personal Beauty Center By Julie Sagoskin Photographed By Evan Guttman

T

hey say less is more, but while that might be true regarding their top-of-the-line laser and electrolysis treatments, which effectively get rid of unwanted hair, that’s definitely not the case when it comes to the personalized services offered at Berenice Electrolysis & Personal Beauty Center, where you get more individualized care and attention than ever before! Every since getting bit by the beauty bug, Berenice S. Rothenberg, Certified Clinical Electrologist and licensed cosmetologist, has been bringing her magic

touch to the tri-state area, especially the upper east side. For over four decades, Berenice has gained a loyal multi-generational following. Before becoming the beauty guru to even the most demanding Manhattanites, Berenice, who is originally from South America, became one of the first in the field of electrolysis to be nationally certified and has since helped thousands of clients achieve their desired body image. With Berenice, you will get the most comprehensive treatments designed just for you in elegant and calming surroundings.

Her desire to please others in all things beautybased came from her own unsatisfactory experiences. Berenice explains, “I decided to start my own business in Manhattan because beauty is my passion. I wanted to make a pleasurable difference for people who needed services and treatments since I was displeased with my own personal experiences. I knew there needed to be a place where you could come out feeling happier. This laser legend came to the U.S. as a teenager. She wanted to open her own business and vowed

BEAUTY

to “learn it better than anyone else.” Not only did Berenice become the best in her field, she also keeps it in the family – two of her sisters currently work with her at the center. Whether you come in to get rid of unwanted hair and/or even out your skin through laser or electrolysis, Berenice and her team ensures all their treatments provide high-quality results. Berenice uses only the most advanced methods for the longest lasting results in addition to offering soothing treatments, so any hair removal experience is as pain-free as possible. Electrolysis utilizes a short-wave frequency to destroy the root of each hair for the most permanent hair removal option. Laser is also a safe and effective method, using a high energy alexandrite current that travels along a light beam to treat the hair follicle at the root. As long as the equipment is in Berenice’s hands, you’re sure to be in good hands! Want to wear that short new dress for an upcoming holiday party or special occasion? Cellulite treatments like Velashape, are also at the forefront of firming and smoothing out the skin by promoting an increase in circulation, lymphatic drainage, cellular metabolism and collagen depositing. Berenice also uses laser for skin tightening, rosacea, sun spots and hair removal. Aside from her expertise in permanent hair removal, Berenice and her team are known for their personalized care and service; after all, everyone is different, therefore their treatments should be too. While Berenice has over 40 years

26 | resident.com

of experience in the business, this beauty entrepreneur, who uses only state-of-the-art technology, still attends seminars in order to stay on top of the changing treatment trends in the industry. Her clients have come to appreciate her unparalleled precision and quality standards and she even provides services to third and fourth generations of the same family. “Clients come to expect a level of service and resolve, so we always have to be effective here. If you’re good to the clients, they’re good to you. I see everyone from grandmothers to millennials and sometimes those as young as 11 or 12 years old, depending on what they need.” In addition to hair removal procedures, which also include waxing and sugaring, her other popular services include facials, massages, airbrushing, makeup and of course, customized treatments in a comfortable atmosphere so you can relax while waking up to a revitalized version of yourself. As with all services, Berenice makes sure each and every person leaves feeling fresh inside and out. Berenice is in the business of confidence building and she can take all your unwanted hair off with laser or she can ease you into temporary hair removal before you decide to take the permanent plunge! Looking for smoother skin or more chiseled cheekbones? This skin savior steers her clients towards the best treatments suited just for their skin. Using the most advanced techniques available, she will save you from pulling and shaving hair yourself,

which can cause bumps and stimulate the growth of even more unwanted hair. Berenice also works with many doctors who send their patients to her from all over the world. When clients get worried she’s going to become too busy for them because of her demanding schedule, she jokes, “I always have time because I do each person one at a time! At the end of the day, I care about improving people’s lives and how they feel about themselves.” While Berenice can make you look and feel as perfect as possible with her top-notch treatments, keep in mind only surgery can take away all your wrinkles permanently. Nevertheless, her signature facials will have you glowing and looking youthful, especially during the winter months when skin becomes extra dry. Whether you do a facial once a month or a clean-up every change of season, she can customize a skincare program in the gentlest way possible in order to allow pores to breathe more freely. If your body is starting to feel itchy, professional exfoliations can also have you feeling rejuvenated in the rigid weather. Before you pick up that razor, call Berenice to get a complimentary consultation so you can start feeling refreshed and ready to take on the world one electrolysis treatment or hydrafacial at a time! Berenice and her team are committed to bringing out the best with their personalized treatments and will leave you feeling more beautiful and confident than when you first walked in.

jitrois. When It Comes to Leather, There’s a New Leader in Town By Julie Sagoskin Photographed By Udo Spreitzenbarth

I

f you like your leather, you’ll love Jitrois, an under the radar cult-fashion brand, known for bringing revolutionary designs to the runway. The only thing that could possibly be better than the brand itself is Lewaa A. Khalek, the president and the personality behind the fierce, fashionforward label which has many famous fans including Paris Hilton, Lady Gaga, Kylie Jenner, Beyonce and more.

leather look anytime! Lewaa, who took the reins of the company in the United States market in 2013 has given new life to the luxurious Parisian label. He also sells the collection to other high end shops and department stores in multiple cities throughout the country. Jitrois, which introduced its original designs to the world in the 70s, is now a well-known brand in the states thanks to their leather and more importantly, Lewaa!

Lewaa is currently the owner of Jitrois boutiques across the USA, a portfolio which includes stores in posh places such as Aspen, the Bal Harbour Mall in Miami, and of course, their flagship store on Madison Avenue, so you can update your

This suave businessman, who started his fashion career working for Gucci in Kuwait in the late 90s, credits his mom as being “an inspiration for me growing up. She had a love for fashion. When I started working with Jitrois a few years ago, it was

an untapped luxury brand unknown to the American market. It was an exciting opportunity to build the business and create a following. Of course, the quality, taste level and artistry of the pieces are top notch. For all of those reasons, there couldn’t have been better match for me. I have been able to develop a huge loyal following including top celebrities as well as extremely prestigious clients.” Don’t like the length or color? No problem! At Jitrois, you can customize any piece to fit your personal style, so you are sure to find your dream dress for any occasion. While fashion might be big business, this leader in leather is all about adding personal touches to not just the designs, but also

resident.com | 39

fashion

when it comes to his relationships with his clients. Whether it’s hosting dinners or taking the time to catch up in the store’s downstairs lounge – yes, each store has a lounge where you can relax with a glass of champagne or Jitrois labeled wine – Lewaa brings back old-school service which his clients have come to appreciate in this fast-paced, social media driven world. From the moment you walk into a Jitrois shop, you will be instantly transported to a world where you can redefine and transform yourself. The brand was founded by Jean-Claude Jitrois who based his designs on the philosophy that wearing leather, which he defined as a second skin, is how we break out of our shells and harness our true, powerful selves – our very stylish selves! “When a client comes to New York or Aspen, they don’t just come to shop at Jitrois, we plan the whole trip for them, or we might go hang out with them on their yacht in Miami, we form personal relationships. We might send a client flowers on their birthday and they know that it’s genuine. Building personal relationships is part of our philosophy here and it always pays off. We are very flexible, we open our hand to our clients, and a huge part of our business

40 | resident.com

is special orders. The big fashion houses aren’t custom making anything anymore, especially in a short time frame, it just isn’t cost effective for them anymore, but we want to ensure every woman who comes through our door receives exactly what she wants. Our first shop in Aspen was super successful because everyone there is from different parts of the country, so it was an amazing marketing window for us to connect and make friends and build clients nationwide and they know we’ll bend over backwards for them. For example, nobody wants to see someone else wearing their same dress, so I’ll never sell a piece to someone if I know their friend has the same design or if I know someone else already planned to wear a certain dress to the same event. That’s also why I’m very particular about who can carry our brand, I want our designs to remain exclusive.” While women of all ages appreciate the leather label’s sleek and sexy designs, the target Jitrois client is in her 40s, 50s and 60s. “Jitrois is geared for a woman who is educated, sophisticated and chic,” added Lewaa. “If she’s a lawyer she can wear our skirts to court, and then can dress it up for a night out. Our woman works out and is confident, and wearing our clothes is the cherry on top for

her. When she puts a Jitrois piece on, she looks sexy and more importantly, feels sexy. We have a permanent collection with everyday pieces featuring leather skirts and leather jackets as well as a seasonal, more embellished line.” This customer relations oriented company also supports many charities and enjoys being able to give back. While Lewaa and his team are constantly traveling to meet with clients, exhibit trunk shows or put on events, including an upcoming show in St. Louis where they will show off their pieces with a full-piece orchestra playing, Lewaa also knows when it’s time to take a step back before moving forward. “We don’t rush to do things, I feel my way in business like a blind person. With every step I take, I make sure I’m putting my foot in the right spot. I have been offered many amazing opportunities, but I don’t do anything until I know the time is right.” In addition to opening a Jitrois shop sometime next year in Los Angeles, the face of this beloved brand will soon have his own namesake store which will be connected to the new Aspen location. Lewaa

Olga Smirnova

fashion

K. will be a place where men can shop Lewaa’s favorite looks, from designers he likes to wear including John Varvatos, Belstaff, as well as an accessories and belts line from J.W. Cooper. The stylish executive of this equally stylish label explained that the latest Jitrois collection “explores the roots of humanity, art and Mother Earth. The suede and leather evoke the nuances of the city of Paris’s unique soul beneath gray skies. Beautiful embroideries sparkle like the lights of the Seine, emphasizing the prevalence of women in modern time. This season, the Paris based design team built each piece around what is called the high profile – long skirts unzip to the thigh to reveal provocative miniskirts beneath. Jitrois’ expert tailors carved the second-skin leather jackets, dresses and pants while the soft suede pieces swirl in movement like clouds scudding across a Parisian sky, creating pure couture magic that sets the bar for perfection.” Wearing stretch leather, which the brand is responsible for creating, is like wearing a second skin. The pieces accentuate the wearers underlying sexiness in a way that is unique to the Jitrois experience. For Jitrois, leather is a material that protects you but also puts you in the limelight. The future of Jitrois will remain stylish – and sustainable – as they will continue making dynamic pieces from their signature high quality leather, while further exploring the deep connection between leather and

44 | resident.com

skin. The fashion house, known for its craftsmanship and materials, also stands for empowerment and sustainability, which is why “Jitrois is in the process of exploring the use of leather alternatives and is already discussing these possible new materials with leaders in the bio-fabrication of animal free leather.” According to Jitrois “all industries must evolve and strive to be more sustainable at a time when it’s of the utmost importance to reflect on one’s footprint on the world.” Lewaa also believes that “French women have a way of putting themselves together effortlessly. They look great with a less is more attitude. American woman tend to want to show what they’ve got. It’s a different kind of confidence. The attitude of the American woman ranges, but here, there are no limits.” While the Jitrois standards have remained the same, social media has played a huge part in changing fashion trends. “Some young consumers are probably more likely to buy an item they've seen on a reality star or on Instagram via their phones, rather than from a shop window,” said Lewaa. “Still, nothing can replace an in-store experience when it comes to creating real brand understanding. Before the rise of the Internet, the only way to see a fashion show was with a ticket, but with all of this online streaming, the customer can now partake in the experience and view new collections at the same time as editors and buyers. Consumer's interaction

with the industry is so fast forward and quick. We at Jitrois are using social media platforms on a daily basis to create content about our collections. Showing details of our pieces through imagery and videos is a creative process and has given us a new way to share the Jitrois vision with our followers. As a result of this dynamic interaction, the trends are also changing throughout the industry.” Lewaa doesn’t just bring style, he also sticks to his principles, and demonstrates that you always have to “do what’s best for your clients, even if it may not seem to be what is best for you. That mentality will build a solid base for the business in the long term. Being able to introduce the Jitrois brand to a new market in the United States over the last five years has been a career highlight. I know that I have a long road ahead of me, in terms of my career, but I will look back at this time as being a pivotal point in my life.” When he’s not welcoming customers at his Madison Avenue boutique, Lewaa likes to spend time in Aspen, one of his favorite places, as well as where he opened his first Jitrois location. His vision has breathed new life into the brand, which is only getting bigger and better with every beautiful and unique piece. Just step inside one of their stores to see for yourself – just be warned - you might leave feeling more confident in your new luxurious leather!

SHAFIROFF

Celebrity Philanthropist On Holiday Giving By Christine Stoddard Photographed By MICHEAL PANICCIA

M

ovies, music, and advertisements can give us a false impression of the holidays. Manhattan philanthropist Jean Shafiroff warns against buying into the sugarplum fairy hype. “You have to manage your expectations,” says Shafiroff. “If you’re a person of privilege, be grateful for what you have, even if it doesn’t match the fantasy. A lot of people are lonely and in great need around the holidays. Be compassionate and give what you can.” Shafiroff has made her mark as a volunteer fundraiser and leader in the charity sphere. She came to philanthropy after earning undergraduate and graduate degrees from Columbia University, working in a hospital and finance on Wall Street, and raising

two daughters. With an MBA in Finance, Shafiroff has chaired countless galas, such as ones for Southampton Hospital, American Heart Association, United Negro College Fund, NYC Mission Society, New York Women’s Foundation, French Heritage Society, Southampton Animal Shelter, American Cancer Society, Couture Council of the Museum of F.I.T., and other respected causes. One of her chief accomplishments includes fundraising $5.4 million for Southampton Hospital, in addition to giving generously to the institution. Shafiroff has been honored by the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services, the Surgeons of Hope, Dominican Women’s Development Center, Southampton Animal Shelter, and various other

organizations. The list goes on and on. What drives her need to serve? A sense of purpose coupled with passion. Identifying Your Causes Everyone of financial means should donate money to charities. Shafiroff firmly believes that all privileged people have that obligation. She gives her time, knowledge, and money. Since she often hosts charity events at her home, she believes in giving her home, too. She explains that your “mere presence at an event is not enough.” Shafiroff thinks that anyone with financial assets should donate to important causes. Right now, she hopes that the people of our nation will come together to aid California as the state has battled major fires.

“This is very important and can be done through the American Red Cross and the Humane Society, just to name a few organizations,” she says. “When you donate, you can specify that your gift should go to California relief efforts.” In other words, if you can give, you must give. Shafiroff points to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. quote “Everyone can be great because everyone can serve.” “You have to look deep inside yourself and ask if you’re doing enough to help better society,” says Shafiroff. She is particularly concerned about championing women’s rights, working with underserved populations, promoting quality healthcare, giving animals a place of dignity in society. She chose these causes and associated organizations based upon her upbringing and personal values, not because of popularity. She also sees these as areas where there is great need. “It’s ideal to have a meaningful connection to your charities, but what matters most is that you give,” she says. Shafiroff explains that you are much more likely to advance a cause and make an impact if you are passionate and sincere about it, but that giving is what actually inspires change. “The value of society is woven into the very fabric of American life. It’s not an exclusive club open to a very few. Gifts of all sizes are needed.” In fact, Shafiroff believes that the American value of philanthropy is a seed that should be planted early. “Philanthropy is a lifelong commitment,” she says. “Giving back to society should be an integral part of our lives. Parents must teach their children to give from an early age so that it becomes a healthy habit for them—almost an instinct. Parents can teach their children to become philanthropists by first teaching them to share and to be kind to others.” Shafiroff realizes that getting started in philanthropy can feel overwhelming at first. She urges beginners to take it step by step. “It’s a process,” she says. “But there is great need in this world. It is crucial to be kind. When you give, you feel great. Giving is a very rewarding experience.” Selecting Your Holiday Season Charities Once you have pinpointed your causes, it’s time to do a little research in order to make an educated decision. In her book,

Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life By What You Give, Shafiroff goes into detail about how to sift through the many non-profit organizations biding for your time and money. You can focus on one organization or on several in different capacities and degrees. However, your choices must be informed ones. You will enjoy learning about all of the various choices that exist. Learn about different charities related to the causes that interest you and study their track records using tools like Guild Star, Charity Navigator, and the Better Business Bureau. Note whom the charities serve, how they serve them, and where their finances lie.

a lot of attention. You might discover a hidden gem.”

“Pay attention to what the organization is spending, how they are spending it, and what they are paying staff,” says Shafiroff. Other words of advice: Read the organizations’ mission statements carefully and ask yourself if they appear to live by their promises. But Shafiroff also advises you to read press about the organizations.

Before donating a large sum, Shafiroff suggests delving deep into the charity’s finances. Any 501c3 organization must make their financial information public. This information is often available in the charity’s annual report, which you may be able to download from the organization’s website. (Often annual reports exist as PDF documents.) If you cannot easily find the annual report on the organization’s website, send the staff an email. They can email you the PDF or mail you a hard copy. Once you’ve seen the numbers, you can evaluate what kind of impact your dollars will have. Then you can decide which charity or charities will receive your donation and how large the amount should be.

“Remember—what’s on their website is what they have written about themselves,” she says. “You need to see what others have written about them.” That means finding newspaper articles, blog posts, online reviews, and more. Almost every organization has an online presence beyond its official website. “Some organizations are smaller and might not have had their chance in the spotlight yet,” says Shafiroff. “It’s fine if an organization hasn’t gotten

As you delve deeper in your research, you will be astonished by all of the amazing work done by charities in New York City and beyond. The Final Choice Which charities make your short list for larger sums is ultimately up to you. Values and priorities are personal. After you have narrowed down your charities, consider where your dollars will have the most impact for people and animals in need.

“The biggest organizations with the most dollars coming in from major donors might not need your gift in the same way that smaller, more niche organizations might,” says Shafiroff. “That doesn’t

mean you shouldn’t donate to bigger organizations. You might simply adjust the amounts for organizations of different sizes and operating budgets. Think about where there is a great need. Do your part to fill that need.” The Bottom Line “I mention in my book that selfishness does not bring happiness,” she says. “Few of us will ever be remembered for the businesses we created or the vacations we took. Through the act of giving, we ultimately come closer to understanding the meaning of life.” Shafiroff wants to be clear: She wants people to have fun, but she also wants them to give back to society. Shafiroff herself is known for her stunning ball gowns and cocktail dresses, which she wears to fundraising events. While she believes dressing up helps elevates an occasion, she is careful to reign in her spending. “I buy my gowns and dresses on sale and wear them to multiple events,” she says, adding that she hopes to donate her collection to a museum one day. Shafiroff hopes that this holiday season you remember to look outside yourself. “All of us should strive to be kind not just to loved ones but to those who have so little. Make it a family activity to think about others, give to others, and just better society in general.”

DEMARCHELIER Authentic French Cuisine with a Modern Art Ambience By Peter Elston

A

uthentic French Bistro Demarchelier, owned by artist Eric Demarchelier (brother of famed fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier), celebrates its 25-year anniversary this 2017. Eric opened the very first location of his eponymous restaurant the same year he first moved to New York City, in 1978. After having moved from its original location on Lexington Avenue, Demarchelier re-opened in 1992 on 86th street, still frequented by its regular diners. More bourgeois than bohemian, Demarchelier’s lively and cozy locale also showcases a rotating collection of paintings by the owner. Demarchelier brings a little piece of France to New York City. Every meal that leaves its kitchen aims to capture the essence of authentic French bistro fair. The family owned and run Upper East Side restaurant radiates a comfortable, colorful, warm and familial spirit that has made it a neighborhood fixture for a quarter-century. Ideal for a quick bite to eat, a romantic rendezvous, or a simple family meal. The traditional French menu is paired perfectly with a wide range of predominantly French wines.

Diners will find many familiar dishes on the classic bistro fare menu, which are coupled with daily organic selections. Demarchelier provides an array of all natural, grass-fed, organic options brought directly from nearby farms, which are sure to suit even the most health-conscious diner. Signature dishes include the Moules Mariniere au Vin Blanc served in a cream-enriched broth; Duck Confit served over a hearty mix of tomato and tarragon scented flageolets; and Sole Meuniere, flour covered and pan-fried in butter, accompanied by a grilled lemon half and wedges of boiled potato, tossed in a mix of butter and chives. Demarchelier’s decadent dessert menu features flavorful dishes such as Tarte Fine Au Pommes, a flaky tart filled with warm apples and served with fresh vanilla ice cream; and Crepe Suzette, a classic French pancake drizzled with Grand Marnier. On the weekends, diners can enjoy a classic French a la carte brunch. Dishes include Organic Eggs Benedict with Hollandaise sauce

served with a choice of ham or salmon; Pancakes served with maple syrup and a choice of blueberries; and Steak Tartare with a side of pommes frites. Born and raised in Normandy, Eric Demarchelier has received additional recognition as a painter. Eric’s artistic style encompasses figurative, geometric abstraction and abstract expressionism, as well as landscape and portrait painting. He began painting in the 1990s and has been rotating the art exhibited in the restaurant every year since. Aside from the rotating artwork, Demarchelier has remained consistent throughout the years, both in terms of ambiance and menu, though part of the responsibility of running the restaurant has been pledged to Eric’s daughter Emily Demarchelier.

F

rom New York to Japan, Maribel Lieberman has built an edible empire with her cherished chocolate company, MarieBelle, along with her more rustic brand, Cacao Market. Her gourmet chocolates are not only delicious, they’re also designed to be a work of art, which comes as no surprise, as Maribel studied fashion before following her passion for food and most importantly, chocolate – and she has been satisfying many people’s sweet tooth ever since! The mother and chocolate master explained she found out after going to fashion school at Parsons School of Design that her “real love was for cooking and experimenting with different ingredients and creating new dishes, and New York City was the perfect place to introduce new cuisine as a chef.” While she had no formal training, this Honduran native, equipped with a perfect palate, learned everything she needed to know while experimenting in her kitchen and putting different ingredients together. After entertaining in her home for so many years, Maribel decided to open a catering company, Maribel’s Gourmet Cuisine. Before long, Maribel was cooking international cuisine for ambassadors from all over the world at the United Nations, where she would incorporate food from a particular country or culture. While her friends encouraged her to use her culinary talents to open a restaurant, Maribel was more interested in constantly creating new menus as well as new experiences through lighting and presentation with each unique event she put together. Rather than selling the same dishes every day from the same menu, she wanted to be able to “change the colors of the food and the atmosphere depending on the occasion.” This culinary creative, who lives with her artist

husband and teenager daughter in Soho, is truly living the sweet life while making sure you can savor all the sweets you can handle! Whether you visit her deliciously designed shop in Soho or Kyoto, you will be in for a real treat – literally! MarieBelle, or the more artisanal Cacao Market shops, will transport you to a fantastical world of flavor, intoxicating aromas and innovative displays. You can even sip on their heavenly hot chocolate or bite into some handcrafted tantalizing truffles in their cozy salon cafe for the ultimate elevated chocolate experience. “At the end of the day, I am an artist, and there are many mediums you can paint with. You can paint with flavor and you can paint with food and presentation – the taste is just as important as the presentation, but when you’re feasting the eyes, you’re feeding your brain with good thoughts and good energy, and it brings a smile and a real appreciation. You will get much more satisfaction than just from eating when something is presented beautifully, as you’ll be able to contemplate it even before the first bite.” In addition to delighting customers with her fresh bean-to-bar sweets, this entrepreneur also enlightened chocolate lovers by introducing chocolates from countries such as Africa and Latin America, where cacao originates. “I wanted to incorporate ingredients from different cultures, but 20 years ago, very few people knew that chocolate comes from cacao,” said Maribel. “A lot of people were saying the best chocolate comes from Belgium, Switzerland or France, but while they know how to produce great products, the original cacao growers were from Latin America.” After five years of cooking up innovative dishes with her highly sought-after catering company, this

chocolate connoisseur decided to open a gourmet store with one ingredient: chocolate. The store, called Lunettes et Chocolat, which she opened with a friend, focused on both designer chocolates as well as glasses. However, after September 11th, the downtown area was suffering and many places were going out of business, so Maribel decided to take a new space for Christmas, which she only expected to be open for a few weeks. This pop-up shop, which opened in Soho in December of 2001, did so well that you can now buy your luxurious MarieBelle chocolates in that very same spot! If you have dietary restrictions or just want to do chocolate on a diet, Maribel is going to be your new goddess of chocolate-y goodness. Willy Wonka has nothing on this chocolate wizard who is currently working on a new sugar-free chocolate using only natural sugar, so it has no chemicals, zero calories and still tastes amazing. She is attempting to make chocolate, which already has a lot of antioxidants, even stronger by adding blueberries or other fruits that are also rich in antioxidants. According to Maribel, “Mixing these fruits with sugar-free chocolate makes it even more powerful.” Problems digesting milk? That’s no problem at MarieBelle, where you can also delight in dairy-free chocolate bars. What’s better than MarieBelle chocolates? MarieBelle chocolates inside a Nutcracker box! That’s right—if you’re on Santa’s nice list this year, you might just find yourself opening a whimsical box filled with hot chocolate, pistachio toffee and dark chocolate almonds – bite into that! With specialized gift boxes and limited-edition packaging available in all price ranges, you will find the tastiest treats for everyone on your gift-giving list – just make sure you don’t eat them all first! Maribel described the Japanese as a “very demanding culture, and they are very picky about taste and are very much into presentation,” two of the things that this unstoppable chocolate-making force does best! Maribel doesn’t just give back by giving customers the gift of her ganache; this charitable chocolate master also helps women in her native country of Honduras. “Since 2015, I have been traveling to Honduras, where I meet up with women farmers and I buy their cacao from them. I’m supporting about 60 women at the moment and doing a lot of trading with them because a lot of these women have never tasted chocolate, so I often go over to teach them how to process the cacao and make chocolate out of it. Cacao is a plant like anything that we eat and consume. I go back about two to three times a year, and I have a company that collects the fruit for me and also does the fermentation.” She has done so much to help promote products from her homeland, that Maribel was recognized by the government for her contributions and is now a brand ambassador representing Honduras.

THE VENETIAN HOTEL AND PALAZZO A Glamorous Escape to Las Vegas By Camille Daniels

B

reak out the sunglasses and be prepared to hear the sounds of the flashing lights upon arriving at The Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas. Here guests are treated like celebrities by being provided with the best. There’s no such thing here called a “hotel room” instead every dwelling is called a suite with a bedroom and ensuite living room. The reason for that is simple because space at the Venetian is a luxury and therefore twice the amount is provided. Luxurious touches such as Italian Marble and soft lighting reflect the Old World elegance of the hotel. The anchor suites are Luxury, Bella and Grand. Under Grand there are three spe-

78 | resident.com

cific suites are Rialto, Prima, and Piazza. For an even more VIP experience, the Venetian Tower suites are the exclusive offerings located in the corner section of the hotel that provide solitude and peace. Food choices are in abundance at the Venetian with cuisines that appeal to a variety of tastes. For those looking to dine like Hollywood’s elite there are world class restaurants created by celebrity chefs including John Kunkel, Emeril Lagesse and Wolfgang just to name a few. There are also five bars and lounges like The Dorsey and the Electra Cocktail Club that have an intriguing décor matched with a variety of potent libations to get the party

started. Nightlife is covered at The Venetian from TAO Nightclub to Rosina, which continue to be hotspots on The Strip. There are numerous shows that are always playing at The Venetian. While it may be known for its glitz and glamour, the holidays are not forgotten. A highlight for the holidays is the Rockin’ Holiday Jukebox by Human Nature which a series of shows celebrating the holiday season from November 27th to December 23rd. The Palazzo hotel, a neighbor of the Venetian, gives the sense of sophistication based

on the architectural layout and dĂŠcor of each suite. Just like the Venetian every hotel room is a generously sized suite of varying sizes. There are the Luxury, Bella and Grand suites. Under the Grand Suites branch there are the Fortuna, Siena, and Lago suites. The Penthouse Suite confirms beyond a shadow of a doubt the definition of what it means when luxury and elegance are intertwined. The colors are rich making each room appear fuller to the eye. Each suite has a fabulous dĂŠcor along with panoramic views of the strip seen from the large windows. There are also suites designed specifically with business travelers in mind such as the Presidential and Chairman Suites.

There are plenty of places to dine while staying at the Palazzo. Be the first to taste and experience The Factory Kitchen which is the brainchild of two friends Restaurateur Matteo Ferdinandi and Chef Angelo Auriana. If you are looking for Asian cuisine, be sure to visit SUSHISAMBA or Mott 32. Carnivores can get their steakhouse fix at Cut or Morels Steakhouse & Bistro. As the Venetian and Palazzo are connected, guests of both hotels are able to meet in the shared spaces of the 10 swimming pools and as well as the bars & lounges and shops just to name a few. For the art and architecture

lover there are curiosities to keep a connoisseur’s interest. When it comes to games there are more than enough ways to gamble in style that meets your needs whether you are looking to go solo or with friends. Both hotels have the ability to cater to all your needs to make a fulfilling trip and it may all begin with requesting concierge for assistance. Because from the moment you arrive you are more than simply a guest, you are a headliner. venetian.com

“Jane the Virgin” After one audition, someone followed him to the elevator, introduced herself as a talent agent. The person who followed him to the elevator was Gina Rodriguez, Golden Globe-winning star of the hit TV show “Jane the Virgin.” (Yes, she was working for a talent agency in those days).

Chicago Fire, Show Me a Hero Lima has since had roles in TV series like “Taxi Brooklyn,” “Blue Bloods,” “The Get Down,” and HBO’s “Show Me a Hero” alongside Oscar Isaac, Alfred Molina and Catherine Keener. His “Chicago Fire” character, Leon Cruz, originally scheduled for two episodes, has become a recurring role over several seasons. instagram.com/thejefflima

HELEN YARMAK Designer & Jeweler By Bennett Marcus

esigner Helen Yarmak’s luxurious furs, original jewelry and accessories have been featured in iconic movies and television shows including The Devil Wears Prada, Sex and the City, Ugly Betty, and Empire. Superstars Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, Beyonce, Cardi B and Kim Kardashian are all clients. Yarmak was the first Russian designer whose pieces appeared on a Vogue cover.

“We don’t do anything to get somebody to wear our pieces. Stylists come to us by word of mouth, or from seeing us on Instagram.” instagram.com/helenyarmak The same goes with movies and television shows. “The door opened one day, and it was

Yarmak has ateliers in New York, Milan and Moscow. There’s a boutique in the Ritz Carlton in Moscow, which is where Lady Gaga bought her sable coat while staying at the hotel. “She never went through the lobby, but her stylist did,” Yarmak says. “He loved our clothing, and he called her.” Gaga came right away and bought a pricey statement piece. “I’m so proud of that, she’s a really special and talented person.” Yarmak says.

Yarmak, who has a PhD in mathematics, was born in the Ukraine and moved to Russia after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster hit her homeland in 1986. “At that time, the government didn’t have money for science, and some scientists became taxi drivers and some became oligarchs. I became a fashion designer.” “I started with underwear,” she jokes. To make a dress for someone who had little money, Yarmak found inexpensive fabric at a factory that made underwear. The owners of the factory loved the dress, and proposed a joint venture. “So I wrote my name in English because nobody did Russian fashion at that time, and it became our brand.”

Her shows during New York Fashion Week are legendary. U ㅕ ntil recently, Yarmak’s company occupied the penthouse of the Crown Building on Fifth Avenue, one of the most spectacular spaces in Manhattan. The building is being converted to an Aman Hotel, and the penthouse, used as a party space for Hugh Hefner, has reportedly been sold for $180 million. All of Yarmak’s pieces are one-of-a-kind. “We are a luxury lifestyle and fashion house,” she explains. “We have children’s clothes, exceptional fabrics, home accessories and bags. But everything is unique, and very personal.” Even after decades in business, the brand does not advertise, and they do not chase after celebrities.

It’s not only celebrities who wear Helen Yarmak; she has loyal clients who are true collectors. “Some have more than 200 of our pieces, collected over years.” Everything is made in Italy, and Yarmak uses the world’s best stones in her jewelry, and the finest skins in her furs. “We use only wild skins, never farmed. By using wild skins, you help keep balance in nature. And it’s totally different quality.”

Patricia Field, the stylist from Sex and the City,” Yarmak says. She never knows in advance that her work will appear on hit shows, and her name does not appear in the credits, because the wardrobe consultants either buy outright or pay a fee for photo shoots. If Yarmak lends her clothing to a production, then it’s noted in the credits.

Eventually Yarmak had over fifty different joint ventures in the Soviet Union. Her business grew organically – she made a fur for herself, and customers asked for them. After she wore a ring she’d designed, the same thing happened. “Because I was a scientist, I have a different way of creating style,” Yarmak says. “And I’d say that all of our pieces are for intellectual people, for people who appreciate quality and style.” helenyarmak.com

CHRISTO & JEANNE CLAUDE: THE MONUMENTAL ARTISTS Conquering Impossible Feats for the sake of Art By hillary latos Photographed By Udo Spreitzenbarth Imaging | Lorraine Baker Photo Assistant | Richard Baranya Tania Guerra for Angelo David Salon | Chanel Beauty

A

raconteur of life, Christo Javacheff has led a colorful journey of life that is as large as the monumental works of art he has completed that have left an indelible mark on each visitor who has seen his work. Perhaps it was fleeing the Bulgarian revolution as a teenager on a freight train heading to Austria filled with defectors to living stateless in Europe for 17 years that inspired his works of art to have political undertones. Using fabric and industrial materials in urban environments he has wrapped the Pont Neuf in Paris and the Reichstag in Berlin. His works have spanned the globe with The Umbrellas in Japan and California, The Gates in Central Park, Floating Piers in Italy, and the Surrounded Islands in Biscayne Bay. His controversial yet ephemeral projects that are all completely self funded can take decades of planning due to many layers of opposition only to have a life for days or weeks. It’s perhaps his innate instinct for survival learned at an early lifealong with the support of his partner the late Jeanne Claude that gave him the perseverance to see his artistic vision to fruition. A genius and visionary, here Christo recounts the history and story behind each of his larger than life projects with his dear friend of over 40 years, RoseLee Goldberg, the Founding Director and Chief Curator of Perfoma who was honoring Christo and Jeanne Claude in their 2018 Gala. Performa is a multidisciplinary non-profit arts organization

dedicated to exploring the critical role of live performance in the history of twentieth-century art and to encouraging new directions in performance for the twenty-first century. Part of Performa’s mission is to present a biennial of visual art performance in New York City that illuminates the critical role of performance in the history of art as well as its enormous significance in the international world of contemporary art. Early Years as an Artist Many people from the Soviet Block escaped to the West in tanks to Austria and Vienna. I became stateless and renounced my nationality while I was an artist and the Austrian government took my Bulgarian passport and gave it to the embassy. I was a man with no passport, but I got a white passport for 17 years and needed a visa to visit any country until 1974. When I was in Vienna I was doing all sorts of odd terrible jobs because I could only speak Russian and Bulgarian and we were not permitted to speak any capitalist languages during the time of Stalin. Fortunately I was a gifted painter and did portraits on canvas. When I escaped from the border of Czech and Austria I arrived at the home of my father’s friend in Vienna. I had my student card and wrote a letter to rescind my citizenship and became a refugee. While I was in Vienna I did portraits of all the officers in the United Nations who were from distinguished families around the world, who helped me get to Paris. My biggest

supplier was a hairdresser who had rich clients including Brigitte Bardot and Jacques Dessange. Coincidentally I just repurchased my portrait of Bardot at an auction in Paris. While in Paris I rented a maid’s room on the top level on Blvd Haussmann. I had to create smaller size barrels to the upper floors and then did sculptures in the outer boroughs of Paris. This was the real fabric wrapped around the barrels which eventually inspired my later works. The first project for the wrapped buildings was in 1961 and the message was that the real buildings that should be wrapped would be Parliament or prison. In 1962 after the Berlin wall was built we did the Iron Curtain. The first exhibition was in Cologne when the wall was built in Germany and I was so afraid the Soviet Union would march all over Germany again. I returned to Paris closing these barrels on the rue Visconti. We tried to get permission and we did the installation illegally in 1962. It was up for 10 hours because people couldn’t pass through the street, one of my barrel sculptures is in the Kroller Muller in Amsterdam. In In 1965 I became very friendly with John and Dominique de Menil, who became collectors of mine and they saw the barrels proposals and we tried to The Mastaba between Galveston and Houston. I did scale models and drawings, one of which is on display at the Serpentine Gallery in

London. In 1972 we had the drawings for The Mastaba in Holland and we had a visit by the French United Nations officer who was a collector and eventually became the foreign secretary for France. He suggested to do this in a new nation that formed in 1971, the United Arab Emirates. At the time we were finishing the Pont Neuf and the Reichstag, and The Umbrellas. It was very difficult to do The Mastaba in the Middle East, so we decided to do this in London this past summer because it’s full of people at Kensington Garden. Choice of Location Whether it is urban or rural, we always do art near where people live by houses or telephone poles because we need to have a scale of the project. Each project was designed for a particular place like the Reichstag. But also they are designed for different seasons in the year. The Gates was designed for the winter because Central Park was like a forest, and Miami it was during the late spring. In 1972 we just finished The Valley Curtain, a giant 400 meter long orange curtain in Colorado, across Rifle Gap. Over the last 22 years we realized 22 projects and we failed to get permission for 47 projects which meant that we always have to have something going ahead because they overlap. Once we get permission we left other things aside and we concentrate our resources, money, and energy work to make something happen. From these 47 projects that were refused after a while we didn’t want to do them anymore. Three times the Reichstag was refused, in 1972, 1974, and 1981. In 1995 we were just realizing the wrapping of the Reichstag. Meanwhile we did many other projects over those years such as The Umbrellas in Japan and California. Originally we wanted to do the floating piers in Tokyo Bay because it has so much water around the lakes and bays and we needed to have calm water. We almost did the project in 1998 but we had a huge fight with the governor of Tokyo. But eventually we moved the project to Italy and spent time in the North near the lakes and alps between 1968 and 1970 by Lake Iseo near Brescia. In 1974 we had a connection with many Italian people and collectors who can buy works of art. The lakes were not normal lakes, they were glacial and ranged from 300-700 feet deep with a mountain in the center as high as Manhattan’s Liberty Tower. Only 2,000 people who lived on this island and could only access it by boat. For 16 days I allowed them

to walk on the water and we created a 3 km pier. To undertake this we needed to get permission from 3 entities- the lake, the mayor of Sulzano and the mayor of the Monte Isola. So we decided to go from the bottom and started with Monte Isola first. Then we would go to Rome after we got permission from the 3 entities. When we got all of these agreements and did the press conference in Rome, the government was incapable to stop this, and that’s why it took under 2 years to do this project. Because it was in a small place very few people knew. Overcoming Obstacles and Costs Each of these projects is built like a highway or bridge and you need to organize and hire specialists and engineers and the technology isn’t complicated as there are floating piers and marinas around the world. The law is the most difficult part. Nobody understands that. This was above 300-700 feet of deep water. We were renting about 10km of water so that no one could use it. This project ended up costing $22 million Euros. We rented Central Park for $3 Million so we could have it for 3 months. The biggest amount of work was the Reichstag. It took us 25 years to get the permission and 3 refusals, there were over 600 pieces of work. During this time I really learned what the Reichstag was, but that’s what creates the power of it because it’s beyond a painting or a sculpture. The most expensive part of The Umbrellas was that it was in 2 parts like a diptyque or painting, and it was done in the richest countries of the world- Japan and the United States. But the most difficult part was that it was in a very busy area of metropolitan Tokyo. That project cost us nearly $600 Million. We had to pay the highway patrol and every service non stop. It spanned 16 miles long in California and 12 miles in Japan. There was a moment when we had to stop the project because people couldn’t walk in the streets. This is something we are always facing and try to manage. There was no way to move the project.

Work Process All of the drawings reflect the evolution of the project done in the studio since 1964, I cannot decide how the project is done from the materials or how it is built. We have to make small models first. Near the German and Danish border there was a lake and we did the first version of the Reichstag. For the Floating Piers we needed to test the anchors under the water it used 150 anchors which were 5 tons each with special divers. For this purpose we needed to do underwater tests so we went to Bulgaria underneath the Black Sea to see how it could be done and connected. All of the projects go through that. We’re borrowing public spaces. Humans move through this space its part of their everyday lives. We inherit all of the activities of these humans to work, go to school. Sometimes it’s very complicated and difficult, you have all of these services and governments that you have to negotiate with. But our projects are very much under the domain of architecture and urban planning. Ask many architects how many are really building, most of them are just drawing sketches. Each project has a software period when its only in sketches and in the mind, thousands try to help us and thousands try to stop us and we discover what the project really is. After the permission stage then we have the hardware period with real elements, the wind, people, traffic, kilometers. This is why we have specialists who work in these types of engineering projects. People protest why you do this by a water or a bridge. You cannot make these decisions in the studio or on the computer. I don’t understand computers, I cannot open one and I don’t like to talk on the telephone. I like real things. I am absolutely drunk on the real thing. Real sun, real wind, real kilometers, real fear, no TV, I’m very compulsive. I am even drunk with working with so many professional people to go in their head and find out how things can be done, convince them to get on this project. This is the energy and why we don’t do commissions.

I don’t like to sit, I like to move all the time, sitting immobilizes my relationship with the world. Choice of Colors and Renewable Resources The fabric is the principal material to translate the nomadic character of the project. Like Bedouins who build their tents then take it away that is like our projects. We use different types of industrial fabrics for each project. Color is also one of the special things. The Umbrellas had two colors- blue in Japan as it’s the rainy season with flowing rivers and lush vegetation and yellow in California as the sun burns the grassy landscape to gold and brown. The Gates started in 1979 and was realized in 2005. We chose a saffron color because it was going to be done during the autumn or winter. The structures were not designed as an arch but instead they represent a footprint of the buildings that surround Central Park. The biggest amount of fabric we used was 6.5 million square feet for the Reichstag. Material is the least expensive thing, the labor is the most expensive. For The Gates we used 5,000 tons of steel, almost 2/3 of what comprises the Eiffel Tower. We bought the steel from Pennsylvania to make the 7,503 gates and each base was a different size of weight depending on the size of the gate. That cost $5 million and before we even used the steel we sold it to the Chinese who used it for building a skyscraper. Much of the materials are resold in advance. Like the project in Australia, we used a mesh that was also used by South Pacific farmers to grow crops. Everything we do we try to do it wisely and inexpensively. This is very dialectic by sheer necessity. The same energy exists in other professions and why it’s very normal and what makes the project important. We do many different things and we have so many problems but that journey is so incredible. This is very ordinary. ㅊchristojeanneclaude.net performa-arts.org

ANNABEL ANDREWS ă…ŒAvant Garde Abstract Artist By w. a. muller Photos By Manuel Bonilla

T

ell us how you got into art? I started drawing and painting very young. Living in the natural environment on the Isle of Wight (England), there was no TV, internet, iPhones or iPads. Our toys were the trees and animals in the fields, and curiosity was focused on nature, observing things very closely, or looking out to the sea and sky. At school, at a very young age, we received classes of drawing and painting, and every year, we were examined by the Royal Drawing Society. The teacher was from the famous London Slade school of Fine Arts. She motivated us through her teaching, and I did well in the exams, obtaining an honors certificate. After leaving school, I intended to study art but was offered a good job in London, which I accepted. The work was interesting, learning at the same time orthopedic radiography and attending operations at the London Clinic. Some of my work was used to illustrate Sir Reginald Whatson Jones books.

108 | resident.com

In London, I shared a flat with a friend who had finished art school and worked for an advertising company. My friend taught me many things during the weekends, and the Australian artist Brian Robertson also lived upstairs. Brian later became well known as an art critic and author. Where did you study? Years later, I went to live in the Canary Islands. I attended a municipal workshop with a sculptor, Abraham Cardenas, and I started doing sculpture while taking the Parramon correspondence course from Barcelona, which was interesting and lasted three years. It was very exciting to send my work and wait for the results and the corrections. I learned all the techniques and started to paint Canary Island landscapes. There, I won a local prize, and started painting portraits in the British Club in Las Palmas. There were always plenty of volunteers to sit, including the British Consul.

On coming to live in Madrid, I attended the prestigious PeĂąa Academy in the Plaza Mayor, where I learnt many techniques and live model painting. The following years, I attended two important workshops in the Circulo de Bellas Artes de Madrid. The first was with Jose Guerrero, who had recently returned to Spain from New York where he was part of the New York school of Abstract Expressionism. He made a great impression on me, inspiring me to try minimalism and abstraction. Unfortunately, he had to return to New York. I then started another workshop with Pablo Palazuelo who was geometric and constructivist; he had an interesting group of friends around him. He also greatly influenced my work. The two workshops were a bit antagonistic: Guerrero was very emotional, very visceral and intuitive and Palazuelo was logical and very cerebral, so everything was very rational and structured. Both have marked the path of my artistic work.

What are your inspirations? Fundamentally, it is the landscape of the forest that

surrounds me, here in the Sierra de Madrid. The backlight between the trees is what fascinates me most, as a desire to go towards it, to an unknown place. A yearning to get there, but I do not know where. Walking through nature nourishes me unconsciously. On waking up in the morning ideas are swarming into my head, and I like to start working before they vanish. I paint landscapes, but my concept of landscape is broad, as wide as the world around me. What form of painting would you say your art is? My love of drawing pulls me towards a figurative representation of the model. I am interested in drawing something as it is to me. When making collage, geometry is the main idea, being totally abstract, but when painting, I try to combine all, but always with a reference. I would define my work as total and colorful minimalism on the border between figuration and abstraction. Who are your clients? My clients are worldwide, but I do not know them. Some are large companies like Citibank of Manhattan and also collectors like Agnes Gund and great decorators. Have you done many art shows? I have had many exhibitions and now feel ready for a large retrospective. What is your next series? A continuation of the last series of minimalist colour fields, but each work is an adventure that can take me anywhere. Which series are you the most proud of ? Always the one in the making. It would be paralyzing to think it was worse than the one before. But I do like the black and white series. Which artists inspire you the most? Starting with Friedrich, the romantics and Nordic expressionists. Nolde, Munch, Van Gogh and the Americans Newman and Rothko. And of course, my teachers Guerrero and Palazuelo. annabelandrews.eu saatchiart.com/annabel-andrews artspace.com/artist/annabel-andrews

PRIMA BALLERINA DIANA VISHNEVA Bringing Ballet Back By Julie Sagoskin

W

atching Diana Vishneva dance is a truly divine experience. The 42-year-old Prima Ballerina of the Mariinsky Theatre was also the Principal Dancer of the American Ballet Theatre until 2017 and will soon be bringing her effortless talent to Miami and New York’s Beacon Theatre in December in a technological production of Sleeping Beauty Dreams before touring in 20 additional cities. Since giving birth to a son in May, this ballerina who balances it all, returned to the stage in late September for the Paris Opera Ballet’s gala performance. A graduate of the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet in St Petersburg, Vishneva is not only an accomplished classical dancer, she is also passionate about experimenting with new techniques and technologies. In 2010, she established the Diana Vishneva Foundation, aimed at increasing access to ballet for those of all backgrounds who don’t have professional dancing experience. In addition to promoting dance as a modern art form and providing support to young and retired performers,

110 | resident.com

Vishneva also founded Context, an international festival giving the Russian audience access to new contemporary dance companies from around the world. Diana will be on stage with the production of Sleeping Beauty Dreams December 7th and 8th in Miami at The Adrienne Arsht Center before returning to New York at The Beacon Theatre December 14th and 15th. Why did you want to be involved in Sleeping Beauty Dreams and what makes this such a unique production? Art and dance performance is a brand new genre for me, I have never worked with it before, so it’s very exciting. The performance itself is a symbiosis of music, dance, and state-of-the-art technology. There is a digital projection of the dancer alongside me on the stage, and it responds to my moves. This projection constantly changes, visually adapting different fantastical guises. My character conducts

the moves of her avatars and interacts with them during the performance. Sleeping Beauty Dreams is a journey into the inner world of the main character and we use a real-time digital avatar to illustrate the inner struggle and transformation of her soul. This story is about an encounter of a personal inner dark side and how it can be overcome, a theme which remains as relevant as ever. How are you preparing for your upcoming performances? How does the technology in Sleeping Beauty Dreams influence how you will be dancing? The preparation process for Sleeping Beauty Dreams differs dramatically from other productions, though of course, we still rehearse in the studio and Edward Clug became the choreographer of the project. Most recently, Ed has created new works for one of the leading dance companies, The Netherlands Dance Theatre, and has choreographed a new interpretation of Faust in Zurich.

fascinating partner. Being next to him on stage makes me feel exactly the way I imagine it to be and offstage, we became close friends. I always look forward to working together, especially when we discover a new genre for both of us. What are your favorite things to do in New York? New York is an extraordinary city, with so many cultures and nations mixed together, and it is always a pleasure to stay and work here. New York has so many spectacular places for shopping and fantastic restaurants - I would not be able to name my favorite as I am keen to try them all and discover new places. With all the cultural events happening here all the time, there are so many things I get interested in as an artist and as a spectator and also as an artistic director. You recently had a baby, what was it like getting back into the dance world? And getting back into dancing form? Of course, returning to the stage after giving birth takes a lot of effort. Still, I had no fears about my ability to get back into shape, and my doctors

allowed me to partake in physical activities after a month and a half. I started with swimming and pilates and then I added exercises in the gym and only after that did I return to the studio. I stayed in New York and visited Steps on Broadway and worked with my body gradually. I thought the progress was slow but my instructors were amazed by my pace, and how the muscles remembered everything, and my body responded accordingly. What are you hoping to accomplish with your Context Festival? I founded the Context Festival in 2013 and we held our sixth Context Festival in November. We have reached our goal to provide support for modern choreography in Russia. Context Lab, the competition for young choreographers, sets a positive work environment for these young artists from different cities of Russia. This year we received more than 160 applications from choreographers from Russia, Europe, and the Commonwealth of Independent States.

After rehearsal, we put on the sensors and start to amalgamate the choreography with my avatars. It’s like I conduct my characters in different dimensions. Tobias Gremmler, our digital artist, is the one who creates and visualizes the characters. What was your experience like with American Ballet Theatre? Are you excited to be performing again alongside Marcelo Gomes? In June 2017, I bid farewell to the theatre as a principal after performing for 13 years of my 23-year career in American Ballet Theatre. No other period in my career seems as remarkable as being part of this theatre company. This period really facilitated my development as a contemporary dancer, and I had the privilege of working with amazing partners and enriching my repertoire with the masterpieces of the outstanding choreographers of past and present. My partnership with Marcelo Gomes has a special place in my life. Marcelo is a fantastic, reliable,

ANDY WARHOL ㅌA to B and Back Again By w. a. muller

F

ew American artists are as ever-present and instantly recognizable as Andy Warhol (1928–1987). Through his carefully cultivated persona and willingness to experiment with nontraditional art-making techniques, Warhol understood the growing power of images in contemporary life and helped to expand the role of the artist in society.

114 | resident.com

This exhibition—the first Warhol retrospective organized by a U.S. institution since 1989—reconsiders the work of one of the most inventive, influential, and important American artists. Building on a wealth of new materials, research and scholarship that has emerged since the artist’s untimely death in 1987, this exhibition reveals new complexities

about the Warhol we think we know, and introduces a Warhol for the 21st century. On display at the Whitney Museum of Art from now until March 31, 2019 whitney.org

THE ILLUSIONISTS WORLD TOUR ㅌComing to Broadway for the Holidays By Kristen Oliveri

T

he latest installment of the smash-hit touring magic spectacular, The Illusionists Magic of the Holidays, has found its way to the bright lights of Broadway. Playing at the Marquis Theatre (210 West 46th Street) through December 30th, the show brings together everything from illusions, close-up magic, mentalism, daring escapes, and technological spectacle. Producers Simon Painter, Tim Lawson, MagicSpace Entertainment, and Kilburn Live have taken the show most recently on a US tour, as well as wowing audiences globally with a variety of performances on multiple seasons of Britain’s Got Talent and America’s Got Talent.

116 | resident.com

The holiday version of this production showcases five spectacular magicians including Colin Cloud (The Deductionist), Chloe Crawford (The Sorceress), Shin Lim (The Manipulator), Darcy Oake (The Grand Illusionist) and Adam Trent (The Futurist). Oake, who rose to fame by his performance on Britain’s Got Talent, is looking forward to this holiday Broadway run. “For any artist, Broadway is the pinnacle, a dream come true. To be recognized for your craft and the work you’ve put in is incredible,” he told Resident. But for Oake, all of his shows have been rewarding, most notably the recent US tour where the show played at much more intimate venues.

No matter where he’s performing, Oake is overjoyed that he and his fellow performers have the opportunity to bring a new era of magic to excited audiences around the world. “We’re a very young ensemble. We’re bringing a fresh approach to an old school art form,” he said. “It’s a whole new generation of magic.” While the show has a strong focus on its main performers, it also weaves in performances by Light Balance, a high-tech neon LED dance group from the Ukraine that consists of dancers, designers, programmers and choreographers. theillusionistslive.com

90 COLUMBUS

Modern Amenities, Dynamic Neighborthoods and Dramatic Views By GEORGE Cahn

9

0 Columbus has entered the downtown Jersey City residential scene with 539 rental residences and a full suite of modern amenities in one of the city’s most dynamic neighborhoods. Leasing is underway at the new 51-story tower which was developed by Ironstate Development Company and Panepinto Properties at the entrance to the Grove Street PATH Station, with convenient service to Midtown and Downtown Manhattan. The building is also just steps from an eclectic array of restaurants, shops, cafes and nightlife destinations, including the vibrant Newark Avenue Pedestrian Plaza.

118 | resident.com

The overall lifestyle offering – which also includes dramatic views of the Manhattan skyline, New York Harbor and Statue of Liberty -- has quickly caught the attention of the marketplace, with more than 100 leases signed in the first three weeks and a number of residents already moved in. “90 Columbus reflects the evolution of Jersey City and our commitment to delivering a lifestyle experience that meaningfully connects with today’s urban renter,” said Michael Barry, President of Ironstate Development Company. “From modern design to innovative and thoughtfully-curated amenity spaces to an ultra-

convenient location, 90 Columbus is a great addition to the Jersey City landscape.” The new residential tower is the fourth and final phase of The Columbus Collection, a mixeduse offering jointly developed by Ironstate and Panepinto Properties that comprises 1,484 rental residences, a 152-suite Residence Inn by Marriot® hotel, an approximate 1,000-space enclosed parking garage, and street-level retail space housing Base Gym and Sprove Market Place. “The Columbus Collection has proven to be

a tremendous asset to Jersey City and has helped spearhead the proliferation of new lifestyle offerings throughout the Grove Street neighborhood,” said Joseph Panepinto, president & CEO of Panepinto Properties. “The amalgam of residential, retail and hospitality reflect the innovative lifestyle and culture of the city.” While a striking architectural addition to the Jersey City skyline from the outside, 90 Columbus’ interior social spaces illustrate the developers’ commitment to creating something that is both design driven and totally unique. The partnership tapped famed Parisian interior architect Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance and internationallyrenowned landscape designer Bas Smets to create an oasis of calm set apart from the bustle of the city. Their embrace of nature, color and shapes can be found in the building’s intimate-but-grand lobby attended by a 24-hour doorman and fulltime porters, soaring two-story communal lounge

with a lush green winter garden, and expansive communal workspace, all featuring leafy green plantings that run wild throughout the spaces. Residents also have access to a 60,000 squarefoot outdoor landscaped roof deck with a pool, BBQ grilling stations, sport court, dog run, and children’s play area, and receive membership to the street-level, 30,000 sq.-ft. Base Gym. “90 Columbus provides a fresh and creative new lifestyle choice for residents in one of Downtown Jersey City’s most sought-after neighborhoods,” said Jacqueline Urgo, President of The Marketing Directors, the building’s exclusive leasing and marketing agent. “Prospective renters are truly amazed when they tour the building and see how unique and well thought-out the design and amenities are, which is reflected in the early leasing activity.”

A collection of well-appointed studios, one- and two-bedroom residences was designed for 90 Columbus. Monthly rents currently start at $2,695, with immediate occupancy available. Living spaces feel intimate yet open with high ceilings and oversized windows that take in panoramic views while bathing the homes in natural light. Fixtures and finishes are thoughtfully crafted with organic materials, and hardwood oak floors double as natural soundproofing. Chef-inspired kitchens are adorned with grey custom cabinetry against white quartz countertops and tile backsplashes, while seamlessly integrating stainless steel appliances. Spa-inspired baths feature white ceramic tile and dark pewter porcelain tile flooring complemented by Kohler fixtures. 90 Christopher Columbus Drive Jersey City, NJ 07302 Agents: The Marketing Directors 90Columbus.com
