EDITOR’S NOTE

A

s we approach the end of the year and head into the holiday season, there always seems to be so much to do and so little time, but don’t stress – our big holiday guides will help you find the most stylish gifts for everyone on your list! Our whimsical winter fashion finds will get you glammed up in time for a getaway to some of our favorite spots, such as the Castello Del Sole in Switzerland, Italy’s romantic Sofitel Roma Villa Borghese, and The Hari Hotel, London’s most posh property. This month we spoke with the friendly team behind FrieslandCampina, one of the world’s largest cheese brands. President Gert Jan Poort and Marketing Director Debbie Seife are behind the award-winning cheese wheels of the North American division of this leading dairy company which they keep taking to delicious new heights! This multi-billion-dollar brand is known as much for its sustainability and fairness to their farmers as they are for their flavorful cheeses. With an office in Paramus, New Jersey, FrieslandCampina has found a home in the tri-state area. Gert, who is from the Netherlands, is determined to introduce the American public to his beloved Dutch brand. This caring company is a cooperative, meaning that their 18,000 farmers, based mainly in the Netherlands and parts of Germany, are their main stakeholders. While you will definitely want to put some of their too good to be true gouda on your holiday platters, the team also wants to show that their cheeses are just as good for snacking as they are for displaying at swanky parties. With a wide variety, ranging from Rembrandt wheels to their prized Vermeer brand, FrieslandCampina has something for everyone, and always pays homage to their Dutch history. Socialite and philanthropist Jean Shafiroff is still giving back – and looking better than ever while doing it! Aside from chairing the city’s most glamorous galas and judging beauty pageants around the world, this New Yorker never gives up, especially when it comes to raising funds and awareness for both people and animals. Tis the season to reflect and make resolutions – and we have just the tips and trips to ensure you make them in style! Wishing everyone a happy and healthy New Year! IG @allthefamenoneofthefortune

RITA HAZAN Ruler of Ravishing Roots By Lauren Bens

F

rom a sprawling 6,000-square-foot stylish salon on Fifth Avenue to some of the most popular hair products on the market – you’ll recognize their teal bottles – Rita Hazan has taken the hair industry to higher and healthier heights! She might be known as the ruler of ravishing roots, but Rita said her own roots helped shaped her path. Growing up as a first-generation American in Brooklyn to an Egyptian Jewish family, Rita was inspired to work hard and has since built a hairstyling empire. Rita’s own unruly hair led to the realization that she wanted to pursue her hairdressing dreams. “My hair has always been challenging for me. I realized at a young age that I was able to control my hair, as well as the hair of many others, such as friends and family, so I knew this was something I truly loved and was good at, so I went to beauty school.” After emerging on the sleek strand scene at a young age and appearing on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Rita went on to become the go-to stylist for everyone from J.Lo to Mariah Carey. With clients including celebrities as well as loyal locals, Rita has indeed become one of the most powerful females to dominate

16 | resident.com

the industry. “I never looked at myself as a woman in the hair industry. I just focused on being the best at what I did. I worked extremely hard. I put in long hours with love and had a great time doing it. Only after I opened my salon did I realize I was the only female colorist and salon owner.” She might be found touring with Beyoncé at times, but Rita remains very hands-on, whether it’s hiring, training, or coloring her clients’ hair. “My level of high expectation and client service is something only I have the vision for. I believe it all stems from the owner and foundation. If your employees see you can and will do any and every job, they will treat your business the same.” At Rita Hazan, you can get glammed up for a night downtown in no time. After all, the salon offers multiple services, including manicures and makeup, laser treatments, waxing and facials. They also pride themselves on their personalized service and in ensuring every client enjoys a quick and enjoyable experience. According to Rita, the biggest trends of the season include “natural and warm tones for the fall and multi-dimensional hair that looks sophisticated and expensive. Everyone is trained

and excellent, so you can see any colorist or stylist and leave gorgeous!” Even those who haven’t visited the Rita Hazan Salon yet can keep their roots looking radiant with Rita’s products, which can be found in stores around the country. The brand currently offers a Root Concealer Stick and Spray, True Color Shampoo and Conditioner, Ultimate Shine Gloss, Triple Threat, Weekly Remedy, Lock + Block and Shine Balm, in addition to three new products launching in February. This native New Yorker enjoys catering to her clientele on the Upper East Side, but she also loves living on the Lower East Side. “It’s raw and still has old New York character,” exclaimed Rita. “I love brunch in New York City. It’s such an experience.” She also loves traveling with her husband, especially to Anguilla, her favorite island; she will be spending Thanksgiving in the Cayman Islands. From Fifth Avenue to a fine retailer near you, Rita Hazan has indeed made her mark on the hair and beauty business! ritahazan.com

EMERSON RESORT & SPA Weekend Respite in the Catskills By Lisa Loverro

J

ust two hours north of Manhattan, the Emerson Resort & Spa is a combination of sophisticated luxury and rustic charm. Located in the heart of the Catskill Mountains and inspired by its location and its namesake, poet Ralph Waldo Emerson, the Emerson Resort & Spa is a charming 20-acre boutique property that recently completed a $6 million dollar renovation of its guestrooms and public areas, and reopened their full-service 6,193-square-feet destination spa. The Emerson features 53 total rooms, including 26 suites/rooms in the contemporary Inn and 27 suites in the Adirondack-style Lodge. The Inn is an adult-only facility while their lodge, sitting just next door to the Inn, welcomes children of all ages. At the Inn there’s a gym, yoga studio, fine dining restaurant, and their full-service spa; the lodge has an outdoor swimming pool. The new interior of the Emerson was executed to evoke a feeling that is more reflective of legendary poet Ralph Waldo Emerson, whose famous essay “Nature” was the incentive for the development of the Catskill Forest Preserve surrounding the Emerson

grounds. The Emerson Resort & Spa now brings the outside in and provides guests with open spaces and large windows, showcasing expansive views of Mount Tremper and the 65-mile long Esopus Creek. Their signature restaurant, the Woodnote Grill, serves handcrafted cocktails and Catskill-themed menu items with ingredients sourced from the local Hudson Valley area. The menu changes seasonally and focuses on the bounty of the region. The Emerson Spa reopened as a full-service 6,193 square-feet destination luxury spa in September 2016. The opening of the Spa also marked the unveiling of the Emerson’s new Spa Menu, featuring a variety of signature lines, treatments and experiences. Highlighting the new menu is the Biotec Skincare System, a groundbreaking series of anti-aging and energizing facials. The menu also includes vegan nail care by SpaRitual, hot and cold stone treatments, customized therapies and in-house blended aromatherapy oils. The spa also has a beautiful outdoor wooden deck with a jetted hot tub…one of my favorite offerings at this property.

The resort is dog-friendly and features a dedicated 60-feet wide by 100-feet long park just for canines with a dog run, doggy shower, fresh running water and a special area for smaller dogs too. There is even a “Pup Fare” menu offering homemade treats, including baked in-house dog bones, chicken breasts, and steak filets. The scenery around the resort is nothing less than spectacular with rolling hills and nearby quaint towns. The are a multitude of activities including hiking and biking excursions, trout fishing, tubing down the Esopus, and shopping in the nearby towns of Woodstock and Phoenica. They resort is currently running a Pre-holiday getaway special offering on a one-night stay that saves you up to $98; available Sunday through Thursday, November 4th -21st and December 1st -12th. emersonresort.com

and increasingly internationally, perseverance, attention to detail, and above all else, creativity are all adjectives that describe Jean who divides her time between homes on the Upper East Side and Southampton. A graduate in Physical Therapy from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University, Jean worked a physical therapist at St Luke’s Hospital in New York City , where exposure to human suffering sparked her desire to do charitable work. She then went to graduate school to earn an MBA in Finance from the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University before working on Wall Street in public

finance and private partnerships. Her combination of business skills, empathy, powerful connections and social visibility are of unique benefit to the organizations she supports. Some of the most recent work she’s been involved with includes helping the underprivileged, healthcare, women’s rights and animal welfare. She is also equally committed to continuing to help others become more involved in the philanthropic process with this month’s re-release of her book Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life by What You Give in paperback.

Originally published in hardcover in 2016 with a special introduction by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s daughter Georgina Bloomberg, Jean’s book has widely been lauded as one of the most informative books on giving. Addressing such topics as building a life around giving and how to choose a charity, it also redefines the word philanthropist, stating that anyone can become a philanthropist regardless of their financial means by giving their time, knowledge and available resources. Of why she initially decided to write Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life By What You Give and why she feels so passionate giving back—something Jean credits to both her parents and teachers that was instilled in her as a child growing up in suburban Long Island—Jean says: “We have an obligation to see the need in the world and take action.” While taking action has long been a mantra that Jean has lived by, the book’s re-release comes on the heels of what has perhaps been one of her busiest

and most prolific years as a volunteer fundraiser and donor yet. On November 21, Jean co-chaired the French Heritage Society’s New York Gala Dinner Dance – the Black and White Ball. The day before this on November 20, Jean hosted and underwrote a community Thanksgiving dinner for 400 people at the New York City Mission Society Headquarters (Minisink Townhouse) in Harlem. Jean personally served meals to those who attended the free dinner, many of whom were homeless. In mid-November she served on the benefit committee of the New York City Rescue Dogs Rock Gala. On November 5, she hosted a gallery party at the Laverdin Gallery for Global Strays. In October, she co-chaired the Dominican Women’s Development Center’s 31st Anniversary Gala in addition to chairing the Surgeons of Hope’s 7th Annual Charity Gala at the JW Essex House in Manhattan honoring stage actor Diego Luna, who currently serves as Surgeons of Hope’s Heart Ambassador. On October 7, she co-chaired the New York Women’s Foundation Gala , a charity that

creates an equitable and just future for women and families by uniting a cross cultural alliance that ignites action and invests in bold community led solutions across New York City. Before that in September, Jean co-hosted a large cocktail party for the New York Women’s Foundation at the New York Historical Society. Jean’s leadership roles with several charities in the Hamptons every summer is exemplary. This past summer in the Hamptons , Jean chaired both the Southampton Animal Foundation’s Shelter Gala and the Ellen Hermanson Foundation Gala in July. In July also, Jean officially joined the board of the Southampton Hospital Association. Not only was this her eighth board appointment, but Jean—who has chaired the Southampton Hospital Gala three times—was also honored along with her husband Martin at Stony Brook Southampton’s 61st Annual Summer Party in August.

And in the beginning of 2019, Jean co-chaired the Southampton Bath and Tennis Club Charitable Foundation Gala and also chaired the 64th Annual Viennese Opera Ball in Manhattan. In addition, Jean hosted a large cocktail party in her New York City home for the New York City Mission Society Gala, as well as co-chairing their gala in June at Capitale. Last spring, Jean hosted two other separate cocktail parties; one at her Upper East Side apartment for Surgeons of Hope and the other for Stony Brook Southampton Hospital at her Southampton home. She also has many high-profile events planned for 2020, including co-chairing the Southampton Bath & Tennis Charitable Foundation Gala in January and co-chairing the Viennese Opera Ball in February just to name a few. In 2020, she is also slated to chair many of the same galas she chaired in 2019, including galas for New York City Mission Society, the Ellen Hermanson Foundation, Surgeons of Hope and the French Heritage Society. Several others are in the works. For her philanthropy and dedication, Jean has also been honored by countless different charities, just

some of which include the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, NYC Mission Society, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, JBFCS, Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation, Youth Counseling League, the Dominican Women’s Development Center, the Hadassah, the NYC Film Festival and Surgeons of Hope. Beyond her impeccable academic credentials, philanthropic prowess and the fact that she’s an author, there’s another dimension to Jean that people revere: her sense of style. So much that she’s equally well-known as one of the bestdressed hosts who is also regarded as among America’s top party givers. Having received top rankings on many best dressed lists for her style and extensive ball gown collection, she was listed by the salloniere.com as one of 2019’s top 100 American party givers this past January and as one of the 12 best dressed women of the world by LookOnLine.com in 2018. Though her number-one priority is to help support the many diverse charities and organizations she’s involved with, she also loves to have fun with

fashion while hosting these galas. Summing up her passion for fashion and style, she explains: “Style is an expression of oneself. When I’m welldressed, I feel good. Fashion is a highly creative form of art. I am in awe of the incredible vision of so many of our present-day fashion designers. My involvement on the board of the Couture Council of the Museum of the Fashion Institute of Technology has expanded my knowledge and love of the world of fashion. “To wear and own the creations of some of our great fashion designers is a great privilege. For the past several years, I have also been collecting ball gowns. Most are the creations of American designers such as Oscar de la Renta, Mary McFadden, Zac Posen, Zang Toi, Carolina Herrera, B Michael and Victor dE Souza but she also collects the works of Malan Breton, Valentino and other fashion designers not based in the United States. Many are couture pieces. One day I plan to donate my ball gown collection to a museum. I look forward to that day. In the meantime, I am enjoying the experience of wearing them.”

Jean’s two daughters and her husband Martin are also very involved in philanthropy. A few years ago, her youngest daughter co-founded her own charity called Global Strays, which strives to promote and improve animal welfare in countries that don’t have the proper resources to do it on their own. Jean is an active board member of Global Strays, which currently funds animal rescue groups in Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic and Columbia. Internationally, Jean is also a supporter of the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women. In 2019, Jean traveled to England to lend her support to Walking With the Wounded, the British Charity founded by Prince Harry in 2010 designed to help former British Armed Forces servicemen and women in their career transition from the military to civilian life. Recognizing the need to promote philanthropy through multiple planforms, Jean views social media as yet another important vehicle for garnering support of various charities and encouraging others to donate their resources and volunteer their time. Towards that end, she currently has over 450,000 followers on Instagram alone. Besides supporting her favorite causes though social media, yet another passion of Jean’s is helping to promote up-and-coming designers in her social media posts. Her humanitarian philosophy is apparent in everything she does. “I believe we are not just put on this earth to just to consume and to provide for ourselves and our immediate families,” she concludes. “We have an obligation to help those that have less than we do. When we share our resources, we come closer to understanding the true meaning of life.” Follow Jean Shafiroff Instagram: @JeanShafiroff Facebook: @JeanShafiroff Twitter: @JeanShafiroff

KATEKLEIN CLEAN PILLOW Perfect for A Peaceful Night’s Sleep By julie sagoskin

S

leep is vital to our health and well-being, but many people have trouble sleeping, whether it’s falling asleep, staying asleep, or even feeling well rested in the morning. There are many tools to help – supplements, meditation, essential oils, and more. Some people even try a new mattress - but what if something else on your bed is the solution?

“Others filter the air coming in and out of the pillow to keep it pure. Traditional pillows, however, are only made with one fabric. Inside each KateKlein pillow, there are also 3 layers of materials designed to be both soft and supportive in order to provide comfort in any sleep position throughout the night.”

Fabrice Klein, like many of us, had a demanding career and a family – and was regularly sleep deprived. It was after he broke his shoulder in a skiing accident ten years ago that it became extremely difficult for him to find a comfortable sleep position. Klein searched for a better pillow but was unable to find an option that was both comfortable and healthy. So, he decided it was time to design a better pillow – the KateKlein Clean Pillow.

While people tend to attribute sleep issues to their bed, stress, or other reasons, they generally do not think of their pillow as a reason they aren’t sleeping well. Traditional pillows aren’t designed to be comfortable in many sleeping positions – they generally come in soft, medium and firm options, making the consumer responsible to find what works for them based on their sleeping style (i.e. stomach, back or side).

“I went about designing the pillow very methodically, starting with the end goal: a pillow that would be comfortable and healthy,” says Fabrice Klein, founder of KateKlein. “Then I defined the six characteristics of the pillow required to deliver that goal: soft, supportive, dry, cool, pure and washable.” The foundation of KateKlein’s Clean Pillow is its shell and core design. The washable outside shell is packed with healthy features and its inside core delivers optimal comfort. “Many people don’t realize how much a pillow affects one’s sleep,” adds Klein. “A pillow should softly cradle your head while supporting your neck in a neutral spine position. Because people move around a lot while they sleep, maintaining that support and alignment is not easy, which is why people often wake up to adjust their pillow.” Another important element of comfort is heat and moisture. Klein explains, “While we sleep, we release heat and moisture. When this gets into your pillow it creates a negative cycle making you uncomfortable which affects your sleep quality. If the pillow you sleep on is not clean inside and out, it can affect your health. While people wash their pillow cases regularly, most never wash their pillow. Over time, then, pillows fill up with household allergens such as pet dander, dust, dead skin cells, dust mites and mold.” To help combat this, the KateKlein pillow uses Clean Pillow Technology – the brand’s proprietary designation for the concepts and materials that make up the Clean Pillow. After conceptualizing the design to have the six characteristics required to deliver both comfort and health, Klein identified fabrics and materials that would go into the pillow. As a result, the Clean Pillow is made of seven fabrics, each with a specific role. “Some are smooth, soft, stretch, and wick away moisture, while others prevent air and liquids from getting into the pillow,” explains Klein.

48 | resident.com

“No one stays in the same position all night though, so a pillow that is only comfortable in one position will be uncomfortable in all the other positions you will be in throughout the night,” Klein explains. “This is why I designed the KateKlein pillow – to provide comfort in any sleep position throughout the night.” Handcrafted in Brooklyn, NY, the KateKlein Clean Pillow is made from the highest quality materials sourced exclusively from Europe and the US. kateklein.com

FrieslandCampina Turning Their Cheese Wheels in the Right Direction By julie sagoskin Photographed By Neil Tandy

W

hile it’s a well-known fact that Fr i e s l a n d C a m p i n a makes mouthwatering cheeses, this over $12 billion company prides themselves on their commitment to farmers and fairness as much as the flavor of their products. The Dutch company, which recently acquired two US companies, is indeed dominating the dairy market more than ever before, especially with their North American consumer business division being led by Gert Jan Poort, who has been with the company for 15 years. Gert, who moved to the US from the

Netherlands in order to become president of this edible empire, explained that “our company is a cooperative, something you don’t see that often. It’s very charming because our stakeholders are not equity companies, but rather, the farmers. We are owned by over 18,000 member dairy farmers mainly in the Netherlands and parts of Germany and Belgium.” With a mild climate and fresh meadows for their Friesian cows, the Netherlands has the perfect conditions for producing high quality cheese. Gert and his tight knit team work out of the company’s headquarters in Paramus, New Jersey. There is also

an office in Miami and salespeople around the country and of course, the world. This cheese centric company, which exports goods from the Netherlands, was established over 140 years ago by several farmers that wanted to bring their milk into one factory rather than separately. According to Gert, they were “looking for synergies and economy of scale at the end of the 19th century (since 1871). Our current organization has evolved by dozens of mergers over time. You can turn milk into butter or cheese and export these products around the world. We were exporting mainly to countries where they didn’t have farms and cows.”

resident.com | 51

The fast-growing FrieslandCampina is currently active in over 100 countries around the world, some of which they only started exporting to recently. They have been exporting cheese to the US for over 50 years. This region has become a strategic priority for the company as they continue to grow towards the future, and Gert is steering them in the most delicious direction! Gert, 42, loves being a part of FrieslandCampina, which he describes as a family – and that includes the farmers! “It’s fascinating to work for a company that is always developing and where you work for the farmers. I love the purpose of the company, whose motto is nourishing by nature, as we are providing nutritious food for the growing world population, now and for generations to come. This passionate president also explained that over past years, they have invited the biggest retailers in the United States to come to the Netherlands to visit their farms and factories and to see what FrieslandCampina is all about. “What is unique about what we do is that we control the chain from grass to glass, or from farm to fork,” explained Gert. “This is great in terms of transparency because we can control the total quality from beginning to end.” This cheese company, which is known for their compassionate practices, always strives for sustainability. “This goes from the caring of the cows to the quality in the manufacturing and the packaging of the products until it reaches the stores or our customers,” said Gert. With a more mature food print in the United States, the company is now able to improve sales and continue their steady growth. If there’s one thing FrieslandCampina is good for, it’s their Gouda! While they are known for importing high-quality products from across the world, including their premium Cheddar from the UK, FrieslandCampina is most famous for their Gouda. After all, this Dutch cheese, which is named after the old city of Gouda in the Netherlands where it comes from, is perfect for a snack as well as entertaining purposes. The company is proud of Gouda’s heritage, especially the fact that they are the biggest producer of this cheese in the world. “A Gouda cheese is always extra special and very much appreciated – I know this from experience when I get invited by the neighbors for the holidays!” exclaimed Gert.

With the holiday season in full force, this is one of the busiest times for FrieslandCampina – after all, their famous cheeses, some of which are matured over a year, are perfect for platters at every type of party! FrieslandCampina’s popular brands include Kroon, one of the oldest Dutch cheese brands in existence. Their Parrano has a nutty flavor combined with the buttery aroma of a fine aged Parmesan, as well as the smooth creamy texture of a young Dutch Gouda. They even have a Parrano Truffle which is made with shaved Italian black truffles. After aging, the earthy flavors and truffle aroma emerge to create a complex flavor. Reimagine your cheese experience with the all-natural Rembrandt Aged Gouda, named after the famous Dutch painter of The Night Watch, Rembrandt van Rijn. This Dutch cheese, which is traditionally ripened for one year, has the sharpness of an aged gouda, balanced with a smooth, firm texture. Why have ordinary cheese when you can enjoy Wyke Smoked Cheddar, which is matured for a minimum of 12 months before being sent to a local, traditional smokehouse where it’s smoked for 16 hours. The oak woodchip is damped with Thatcher’s Heritage Somerset cider, adding to its deep, rounded flavor with a slightly crumbly texture. Made from organic milk from cows, their Organic Kingdom Mature Cheddar will reawaken your cheese senses!

54 | resident.com

This fanciful cheese company, which you’ll find at the Fancy Food Show in New York and San Francisco, might indeed be known for their high-end holiday products, but different brands are suited for different occasions. While some are good for gifting or serving at holiday parties, others are suited for snacking. They are currently trying to show American consumers that Gouda and mild cheeses are just as tasty and definitely healthier than the processed and artificial cheese alternatives which are so readily found here. With their newly expanded North American headquarters, FrieslandCampina is taking the dairy industry to delicious new heights! When it comes to products made from milk, this company is the master – aside from cheese, they also specialize in products that are used in formulas and drinks. Their FrieslandCampina Ingredients business and products include hydrolysates, creamers and pharmaceutical ingredients, while their FrieslandCampina Foodservice brands are used in bakeries, restaurants and catering. Gert, who now lives in Ridgewood, New Jersey with his wife and two children, has learned about many cultures after having traveled extensively over the last few years and leading a team of people from Mexico to Brazil, but he is loving living in the Northeast.

“New Jersey is fantastic. The people are nice and the nature is so beautiful and diverse. You have the shore but then also the forest. I go into the city for a run in Central Park or to have a picnic, and Sunday brunch with friends in New York is the best. New York is the most fantastic city in the world. This summer we went to Massachusetts and all over Cape Cod but I really have to explore the Hamptons next!” Royal FrieslandCampina has been in existence since 1871, and just like a real family, once you become a member, you can stay a member, but you can’t become a new one. That’s because at FrieslandCampina, being a part of the cooperative is passed on from generation to generation. Gert even visits members of his ‘extended family’ when he’s in the Netherlands and regularly calls to check in with many of them. “We want to give them the income that they deserve. We are responsible for delivering the butter on their bread, so we want to give them a little bit extra for working 24/7. We’re very proud that we export our products to the other side of the world, including to the American consumer, and they are very happy with that.” They might be part of a multi-billiondollar company and currently integrating three companies into one, but while they remain ambitious in their endeavors, their team in New Jersey has also become like a family.

Their director of marketing, Debbie Seife, is taking her FrieslandCampina cheese wheels for a spin and turning them towards the future. Let’s just say that Debbie is also passionate about the brands – and their packaging! “New packaging is coming early next year,” explained Debbie. “We’re developing new concepts and getting more innovative. The names won’t change but some of the designs on some of the products will have a bit more of an updated look and feel to them. For the brand A Dutch Masterpiece we wanted to tell the story slightly differently and tie the artists in a bit more.” From their Kroon brand red wax Gouda to specialty varieties, Debbie’s specialty is ensuring that even their most artisanal cheeses remain approachable. Their award-winning Rembrandt, an aged gouda, is now sure to be remembered as much for its new modern and easy-to-read label as it is for its flavor and texture. “Our traditional wheels, wedges and chunks of specialty cheese are approachable, but then we elevate them in different ways,” explained Debbie. “Our Parrano cheese has nuttiness of the parmesan with the creamy characteristic of the gouda. Our farmstead Melkbus Gouda with truffles is a real crowd pleaser as well.”

FrieslandCampina has a lot of fun things coming up for the new year, including a new website that is set to launch as well as consumer promotions, including the chance to win a wine and cheese paint party at your local paint studio. Whatever they do, they try to tie everything back to the art, as well as the masterful creation of a piece of cheese. “The Dutch Masterpiece brand which Rembrandt is part of is a whole line of aged cheeses all with numerous awards.” “We really have brands which are for different usage occasions, including more casual cracker cuts and sliced cheeses under the Frico brand. We take everything to heart here, from nutrition to how we treat our famers. It’s in every aspect of everything we do. In our Paramus offices we have sales, marketing, customer service, supply chain and finance departments. Together we are building a company as the importer and manufacturer which has been great!” This Jersey girl, who is currently focused on in-store digital aspects, is also busy educating consumers here in the US about the quality of their product, as well as the fact that FrieslandCampina doesn’t just want to be known as a fancy brand! “We’re going through some label updates and introducing our

specialty cheeses in a more approachable way. KYMA FLATIRON AND ELEA Food Fit for a Greek Goddess By Julie Sagoskin

I

f you want to get your fill of the city’s most glorious Greek fare, head to Kyma Flatiron or Elea, where you will be transported to the island of Mykonos or to the mainland of Greece. Both scrumptious spots, offering mouthwatering Mediterranean meals, are the brainchild of Reno Christou, who got into the hospitality business as a way to enhance the pleasurable experiences of others when dining out. “Being a proprietor gave me an added layer of creativity, where I have the ability to develop everything from menu design to uniforms to plate selections and marketing ideas,” explained Christou. “This is when I had my ‘light bulb’ moment, when I realized that as long as I’m opening restaurants, I have that opportunity to continuously create.” While the whimsicality of Kyma, which just celebrated its first anniversary, will make you feel like you’ve been whisked away to the islands, West Side favorite Elea incorporates darker tones for a more mainland feel, paying homage to Greece’s rustic, olive grove

60 | resident.com

areas. From a happening happy hour to lunch service, as well as a private events program that has made them a popular spot for bridal and baby showers, Kyma keeps guests coming back for more. This fun flatiron restaurant serves up fine Mediterranean fare while offering private dining rooms, making it perfect for those holiday parties that are just around the corner! Their impressive private dining basement has a capacity of up to 270 (seats up to 120) and can be accessed through a separate private entrance. Elea’s newest private dining room will be launching mid-December and will be able to seat up to 65 guests. While you might find some of your favorite Kyma dishes at Elea, Reno explained, “We made sure to add twists so Elea would have its own identity. We wanted to cater to an encompassing version of Greece as opposed to just the islands, so we have a balanced menu of meat, seafood, salads and legumes. At Elea, we are ultimately looking to achieve a neighborhood connection, so we are consistently developing daily specials that could eventually end

up printed on the menu. With this menu format, we hope to keep our regulars engaged.” Get your Sunday Funday on at Kyma Flatiron, where they just launched an unbeatable bottomless brunch deal on Sundays: for $20 with the purchase of an entrée, guests can enjoy two hours of bottomless cocktails including bellinis, sangria, mimosa and their signature VIP cocktail. You can also get your fill of fine Greek fare at both restaurants with their Sunset Prix Fixe. Enjoy these palatable plates from 4:30pm to 6:00pm every day at Kyma, where you will find a three-course meal of their greatest hits for $44.95. Meanwhile, you won’t be left out at Elea, which also offers this same great deal for $42.00. Each restaurant is known for its fresh fish: at Kyma you can choose from Pink Snapper, Black Sea Bass, Tsipoura, which will be cooked to order. Elea has its own savory specialties, including Mussels Anhista, made with herbs, shallots, garlic and scallions, as well as Mushroom Orzotto, which is baked orzo with seasonal mushrooms and Kefalograviera cheese.

Director of Operations Joe Ragonese explained, “We launched additional menus in order to provide new and exciting options for our guests. We saw a need for an ongoing Prix-Fixe menu for those who enjoy dining early in a quieter atmosphere, so we created the Sunset Menu. The Bottomless Brunch was a no-brainer at Kyma Flatiron, as it fits with our theme of “vibe dining” and provides for a lively environment on Sunday. Both menus have been well-received by our guests, and we look forward to bringing these menus to our Hudson Yards location in 2020.” While you will soon have your own favorite dish at each of these hot spots, according to Christou, “Everyone who comes to either Kyma or Elea must try the Short Rib Youvetsi, Lamb Chops, Kyma/Elea Chips and Whole Grilled Fish! Our dips and spreads or Pikilia are always a big hit at both as well. Our dishes are made with love and made to be shared to bring people together. We try to instill the Greek warmth into our hospitality as much as the food, and we find our guests really feel at home because of it.” Reno, who has achieved succulent success in the fickle New York restaurant scene, attributes his own insecurities to the reason why he is always striving to do even better. “If you are fully confident, you get to the point where you tell yourself you have achieved something. Insecurity always makes you look at things in a different way that allows you to evolve and grow - tell yourself there is more, and you can always be more. You always have to continue finding ways to stay relevant and keep things fresh. Measuring success within the parameters of staying relevant and evolving is a key element to strive for. There are always going to be things that people get tired of, so you must be cutting edge and assume there’s someone else who wants it more than you.” When it comes to elegant and chic yet cozy décor and creative cuisine, escape to Elea or Kyma for authentic and innovative Mediterranean plates that are made with love! Set your sights on their delightful seafood plates, which include crudo selections and oysters on-the-half-shell that are treated with yuzutruffle mignonette, horseradish, and a habanero cocktail sauce. Meanwhile, their mahi-mahi is spiked with jalapeño juice, tequila and cilantro. Whether you sit outside people-watching

on Lincoln Road or dine indoors where you’ll be surrounded by the fabulous ambiance of Meat Market’s main dining room, this lively South Beach restaurant is the perfect choice for a romantic date night, celebration or special event. 915 Lincoln Rd. Miami Beach, FL 33139 305.532.0088 meatmarketmiami.com Bella Cuba Restaurant Enjoy a Cuban-style meal at Miami Beach’s beloved Bella Cuba. Neighboring Lincoln Road Mall, Bella Cuba has provided guests with delicious home-style cooking for 15 years, and this local spot is not slowing down anytime soon. Try some of their delectable plates while getting down at their Latin Social, which takes place on Saturdays and Sundays from 12pm. You can also dig into deliciousness at their Cuban Brunch, which is served Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 4pm with live music beginning at 12pm. Bella Cuba recently added “Brunch with

Bongos” where you can enjoy some music with your meal starting at 12pm on Sundays. While their musicians rotate, you might stumble in one day to find Latin Grammy award-winner Tomasito Cruz, Lourdes Nuviola or Cachita Lopez. Bella Cuba’s own personal story is as sweet as their fan-favorite flan (a Cuban caramelflavored custard). Owners Juan Carlos and Larisa Jimenez met in Ukraine when Cuba had a student exchange program with the former Soviet Union. They eventually settled in Ireland, where they started their family. Their youngest son, Omar, who studied Hospitality Management in Dublin, Ireland, became the manager and host of Bella Cuba when they moved to Miami. Omar came up with the latest brunch menu, blending traditional American brunch favorites with Cuban flavors to create a “nuevo Miami Cubano brunch.” As a proud family-owned restaurant, Bella Cuba is passionate about cooking up food made daily from scratch. This traditional Cuban cooking is primarily “peasant cuisine,” which is more about pouring love into every order than it is about strict measurements and timing. Most of the fare at Bella Cuba, which will remind you of your mother’s cooking, is sautéed or slow cooked over a low flame. The majority of dishes include only a few basic spices, such as garlic, cumin, oregano, and bay leaves. What really sets traditional Cuban cooking apart is the staple market ingredients: tropical root vegetables such as yuca, malanga, and boniato complete a traditional Cuban meal and are found in almost every dish on Bella Cuba’s colorful and creative menu. Such traditional dishes include ropa vieja (shredded braised beef) cooked with tomatoes and red wine, slow roasted pork served with yuca in mojo and chicken stew with potatoes, olives and peppers. As a nod to the owner’s Irish past, you will also find fish and chips made with beer battered grouper. Finish your culinary trip to Cuba with a Classic Mojito or a cigar rolled in Calle Ocho and dance the night away with traditional live music! From their award-winning Cuban sandwich, which came in first place at the Calle Ocho Music Festival, to their Guava French Toast, which is made with guava jam from the family’s own backyard tree, dining at Bella Cuba is one sweet experience! Other tasty and authentic treats include the Cuban country skillet, which comes in a castiron pan filled with two fried eggs, home-style potatoes, green peppers, ham, chorizo and cheese served with Cuban toast. You can also savor the sandwich de brunch on Cuban bread stuffed with two fried eggs, cheese, ham croquetas, grilled ham, bacon and pink sauce. Cheers to authentic Cuban cuisine! 1659 Washington Ave. Miami Beach, FL 33139 305.672.7466 bella-cuba.com

With repurposed wood shelving featuring their endless bottles of boutique Italian wines, as well as recycled Eames furniture, Bottino’s interior is just as beautiful as the food! By offering fresh and flavorful cuisine, Bottino has become one of West Chelsea’s most beloved spots. Dig into his mouthwatering specialties such as Seared Mediterranean Octopus with nduja sausage and fingerlings, Grilled Lamb Chops with rosemary, garlic and smashed potatoes and Garganelli with Oxtail Sugo, made with homemade pasta, braised oxtail, red wine, tomato and cocoa powder. THE LIVING CIRCLE Two Ways to Experience the History of Zurich By Jim and Michelle Pastorick

L

ike many major European cities, Zurich can be experienced through the remaining remnants of its long history, something we were able to do while staying at the Storchen and Widder hotels. The two hotels in Zurich, along with the Castello del Sole resort in Ascona, Switzerland, on the shore of Lake Maggiore, are managed by The Living Circle, which strives to create exceptional experiences for their guests with their hotels, dining and entertainment. While reminders of the character and history of Zurich are evident throughout the Storchen and the Widder, that character is presented differently at each of the two hotels. This grand and historic hotel underwent major reconstruction in 2017, when half of its rooms received major updating, while the remaining rooms are scheduled for remodeling in 2021. Although the Storchen boasts numerous restaurants, cafes and bars, there are also many attractions nearby. The property, situated directly on the Limmat River in the historic “Weinplatz” (literally “wine place”), hosts frequent open markets and other pop-up activities, while the historic Old Town area has plenty of cafes and high-end shopping options. As should be expected at a luxury hotel housed in such an ancient structure, the 66 guestrooms

74 | resident.com

at the Storchen vary widely in size, features and accommodations. They range from a Classic Queen Single to the Two Bedroom Suite, and both offer varying views of the Old Town, the Limmat River, the Weinplatz, Lake Zurich and, in a few instances, both the lake and the river. Although the rooms and views vary, they all feature modern features and facilities such as functional windows, so that guests can enjoy the gentle breezes from the lake. The restaurants and bars at the stunning Storchen include La Rotisserie (a formal restaurant with a rustic Swiss atmosphere which also serves an excellent breakfast), Barchetta (the lobby bar with adjacent seating area on the Limmat), and the Cigar Bar (a rustic Swiss atmosphere where you can well, smoke cigars). Three other outdoor seasonal spots which are open from April through October include Terrace, offering outdoor dining on the banks of the Limmat, Piazza, featuring delectable dining directly on the Weinplatz, and the rooftop bar The Nest, which has unparalleled views of Lake Zurich, the Limmat and Old Town, complete with dueling clock chimes from the surrounding historic churches. Wander over to the Widder, an architectural gem which was created by combining nine individual buildings, constructed in the 12th through 19th centuries, into one varying but cohesive structure. The conversion of the nine buildings, originally

consisting of businesses, shops and private homes, took ten years of construction under the direction of famed Swiss architect, Tilla Theus. It is obvious that the overall goal of the project was to create beautiful and fun spaces that preserve ancient structures while incorporating modern accents required for construction integrity and livability. It may sound complex, but the building is a true treasure. The staff of the Widder realize that they are caretakers of an important historic and architectural structure, and they are very accommodating of visitors who want to experience the common areas of this gem. Start in the lobby to get a taste of the beautiful symbiotic relationship between the ancient and the new. Here you will find modern features such as aluminum, steel beams and posts, which are used to support the upper floors and placed between the ancient wooden beams and posts. In order to differentiate between the old and the new, The Living Circle Sales Manager Jonas Schneider explained that “anything that is not original was made distinctively modern.” This sensitivity for respecting older features while incorporating newer pieces is apparent throughout the Widder. From the modern steel and aluminum elevator, located in a former stone outdoor courtyard, to ancient small windows surrounded by glass and remnants of

faded frescoes with modern pencil sketches hinting at the former glory of the now-lost image, the old and the new are both obvious and harmonious. A visitor is met with these wonderful contrasts almost everywhere they look. As with the Storchen, the 49 guestrooms at the Widder vary greatly and range from Designer Double Rooms to Junior and Lifestyle Suites. There are also some Special Suites (lofts, and two and three bedrooms) including a Family Suite with a separate “bunk room” for the kids. Each resplendent room is individually designed to highlight the old wooden structure with its massive beams while incorporating modern facilities such as combination steam spa showers. For the ultimate experience, check into one of their four rooms which boast private rooftop terraces. The common areas preserve and highlight the ancient, though you will still notice the modern materials and construction techniques. You will definitely notice the upgraded luxuriousness and personalized touch in each of these J.MAK Hospitality properties. The Widder is also located in the heart of Old Town Zurich, with its many restaurants, bars and shops, though you don’t even have to leave the premises to enjoy fine dining. The Widder offers several in-house dining options including AuGust Restaurant, which is reminiscent of the butcher shop that originally occupied the space, and the Widder Bar and Restaurant, a multi-level space offering a fine dining experience and live piano music every night. The Widder Bar and Restaurant’s Executive Chef Tino Staub created a concept restaurant incorporating Asian fusion cuisine with a European influence. Aside from being flavorful, this integration keeps with the overall Widder message of combining eras and tastes. Chef Staub also encourages ordering plates to be shared by the table, organized by eight different flavor experiences. You will also find Tino’s favorites, a nightly tasting menu selected by the chef. Find fantastical and unexpected dining surprises at the Widder, including a changing pop-up restaurant offered during the cold winter months. This winter’s pop-up is the Japanese Shabu Shabu, which held a star-studded grand opening event. The Widder also operates a bar and nightclub called Widder Garage, which is just short walk from the hotel. The Storchen and the Widder in Zurich, as well as Castello del Sole on Lake Maggiore, are managed by The Living Circle Group. In an effort to provide the “total concept” experience, the group owns and operates farms in order to provide provisions for their restaurants with items including milk, eggs and rice – they are the northernmost arborio rice producer. In addition, their vineyard, which offers tours for guests, also supplies their own estate wines. They even added a small farm which supplies some of their beef. By staying at either the Storchen or the Widder, you are sure to become immersed in the history of a great European city within walking distance to all the attractions of Zurich. thelivingcircle.ch

ATHENAEUM HOTEL A Legacy of Anecdotes & Teddy By Rory Winston

“Mine,” insists M while collapsing onto the ornate king-sized bed in time to a drum-fill by a Britpop band playing from the large screen TV. Savagely squeezing Arthur against her, she settles into a fetal position. “My bear,” she reiterates, alleging that she’s already officially adopted Arthur and will never leave him behind. Arthur is a teddy bear, an English teddy to be precise - one that, despite protestations to the contrary, is, part of the fivestar hotel’s décor. There is one Arthur to every bed in every room of The Athenaeum Hotel & Residences. As for M, there is only one of her. And it happens to come in the form of a 30-year-old classical pianist and composer – one for whom I’ve been enlisted to write lyrics. It’s in M’s company, and, now apparently, Arthur’s, that I must go to the famed Sarm Studios this weekend and work. The teddy incident has me fixating on the other Arthurs in the hotel and all their surrogate owners. I’m besieged by random images reminiscent of Jean Genet’s The Balcony. In every room some

80 | resident.com

poor Arthur is forced into an elaborate game of psychological transference, one whose correlation to the real world remains nebulous. Arthur can be kinky, romantic, decadent, nefarious, introverted, sordid or inspiring. Arthur is an alter-ego, a point of realization. He could be a mascot for every important decision ever made by residents of The Athenaeum - decisions that, unbeknown to us, may already have impacted our lives. Part of what makes The Athenaeum special is that it is a luxury boutique establishment wherein worldrenowned guests often live for months at a time. Margaret Thatcher lived at The Athenaeum for close to a year. Was her teddy a Tory whose jar of honey had to be guarded from Trade Unions? And what of Marlon Brando’s Arthur? Did he go off in search of a Wee Baby Stella doll? Was it possible that his Arthur was on a bender after Liz Taylor’s bear left him? Steven Spielberg was based at the hotel while editing Raiders of the Lost Ark. Was Arthur

whispering ideas into his ear or, like ET, telling him to phone home? Did Kanye West’s teddy bear fancy himself a grizzly? And what of Kim Kardashian’s stuffed animal – did it need more filling or just some Botox? Russel Crowe, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Michael Douglas, Samuel L. Jackson – what were their Arthurs like? What stories went on inside their rooms? How did it influence their decisions? With 162 bedrooms, which includes 18 resident apartments, The Athenaeum is a wall-to-wall repository of unrecorded anecdotes. It’s a venue wherein major films were planned, politics shaped, books finalized, and music inspired. Enough Green to Go Around From our room, both Hyde Park and Green Park are visible. A third smaller but equally lush green area is the rich garden growing vertically on The Athenaeum’s façade, one aptly called the Living Wall.

The property’s recent overhaul extends to guestrooms, the lobby area and townhouse Residences. The spaces each area function as installation art pieces. Recherché fixtures and trappings collude with magnificent works of art, creating a sense of sophisticated whimsy. The rooms announce, “We are harmonic enough to allow for frivolity.” With a spa that boasts two cedar wood hot tubs, a sauna, a steam room, a relaxation area, a wellequipped gym, and even specially scheduled skin and face treatments, The Athenaeum is a cloistered world unto itself. Galvinized Eating In the timeless Athenauem world, brothers Chris and Jeff Galvin teamed up to create a restaurant known simply as Galvin. Being renowned for French cuisine, each of the brothers had already earned respective Michelin stars. Here, they opted for something different - paying homage to British culinary tradition. Aside from their own signature creations, the focus is on British cuisine with an emphasis on homegrown produce. Devoid of fanfare, the décor is tastefully minimalist without being austere. From the onset, the focus at Galvin at The Athenaeum is the food. Unobtrusive and attentive, our waiter is a culinary tour guide eager to field questions on any given dish. His recommendations are spot on. Case in point: my Countess Negroni and my partner’s Ayala Brut Majeur.

Created by the award-winning French artist, Patrick Blanc, and spanning from street level to the 10th floor, this 2,799-foot exterior is comprised of over 260 species with 18,000 native and exotic plants. An oasis for biodiversity, the massive, organic, and counterintuitive structure offers natural insulation thereby reducing energy consumption. Leaving underage Arthur behind, we sip on Giovanni Castorina’s inventive cocktails, admiring this urban wonder through the windows of the hotel’s luxurious and moody ground floor bar.

Pressed Ham Hock and Chicken Terrine with homemade Piccalilli is presented to M, just as

Marinated Loch Duart Salmon with avocado puree and Fennel Salad appears before me. The delectable dishes are, respectively, paired with a fine Le Paradou Viognier and a Pinot Grigio, Tenuta Aurea. Memories of Arthur are washed away under a deluge of textures and flavors. While the starters pique the palate, the entrees are culinary closure. Seared sea bass with citrusbraised endives, spiced raisins and toasted pine nuts have just the right airy meatiness to bring out both the perfected aroma and foam-fresh feel of the fish. My partner’s Salt Marsh Lamb with Ewe’s curd, nettles and Butterhead lettuce - paired with a Bordeaux Supérior Rouge – is a succulent earthy retort to the tantalizing terrine starter. After coyly taking in one another’s euphoric expressions, we split a Caramelized White Chocolate, Pistachio, Raspberry and Lemon Thyme Sorbet. Shocked in a new culinary awareness for English cuisine, we were Galvinized. “Four songs,” M sighs with packed bags, “we managed four whole songs.” Staring around the room one last time, it feels like I’ve forgotten something. Neither of us wants to be the first to exit. Only two nights and neither of us wants to remember what it’s like not waking up in this room. “We still have a great breakfast waiting for us downstairs,” she states by way of consolation. I nod but have no intention of being the first to go. Something has changed. M reluctantly pulls her bag into the hallway. I take one last look back and smile, realizing that Arthur is nowhere to be seen. athenaeumhotel.com

The 10th floor, with its newly launched executive lounge, The View, affords us an even more remarkable panoramic overview of London. Created in collaboration with award-winning designer Martin Hulbert, the former penthouses have been gutted, giving way to a living space with a floor-to-ceiling wall of windows. With daily cheese, wine and scones on offer, this aerial retreat lives up to its Athenaeum namesake by boasting a fine collection of books.

THE HARI HOTEL A Sonata in Five Movements By Rory Winston

“Magnificent,” wrote the 13-year-old Queen Victoria in her journal when describing the house of Robert Grosvenor, the first Marquee of Westminster, built in what would soon become London’s Belgravia. While others noted the manor was “as extravagant and opulent as the very latest upholster-decorators could make it,” it was thanks to Grosvenor’s efforts that by the mid19th Century, Belgravia contended with Mayfair in terms of prestige. With stucco mansions and sweeping crescents, Belgravia became a haven for dignitaries, landed gentry, aristocracy, celebrated poets, and renowned musicians. It’s little wonder that The Hari, a luxury boutique hotel, set its sights on this regal enclave. A stone’s throw from Buckingham Palace, Knightsbridge and Sloane Square, The Hari’s neighbors include everyone from embassies to London’s most noteworthy residents. Local history is rife with colorful figures that include

82 | resident.com

everyone from Alfred Lord Tennyson to Noel Coward. As a lyricist arriving to London in the company of a very gifted Bulgarian composer, it was a different legacy, however, that drew us to The Hari. Just a few doors down from The Hari was where Bach, Mozart, and even Chopin had resided. And what better way to begin work at London’s illustrious SARM Studios than staying in an area where Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber continues to live today? The Hari is a post-modern Sonata in five movements. In the vernacular of Wallpaper, Architectural Digest and the like, its style is “rough luxury.” With sandblasted brick walls and oak flooring juxtaposed with leather and bronze clad columns, the feel is one of vintage revamped with a contemporary edge. The “first movement” is intimate and bold. There’s a charmingly eclectic allure to the lobby where

thought-provoking art installations sit adjacent an expansive fireplace. With a library of design and art-related books, an Autoban sofa that renders long-limbed adults into a toddler-like state, and a quiet mezzanine with a lounge bar, the sensation is one of private club rather than hotel. Bespoke and simultaneously in-ya-face, The Hari confers a sense of “this is our own developed style and taste: like it or be damned.” We like. Entering our room, the “second movement” begins. As a variation on the earlier timeless theme, silver-grey wooden floors with an idiosyncratic skin-like rug accompanies the aubergine-toned walls and natural textures while an inviting king-sized bed lays nestled between works of art and a large mirror. Cordoned off by brass-beaded curtains, one section of the room sits like some isolated balcony box in an opera overlooking the ever-changing proscenium of the city.

More enticing still, the same motif recurs in the marble bathroom where an ornate angular tub hovers directly over the park square. As faux exhibitionism goes, little compares with a sumptuous bubble bath behind large smoked glass windows. Though my colleague usurps the space for a private recital from which I’ve been barred, I’m certain the piece being played is inspirational. Thinking little of it but too much about it, I quickly take a complimentary bike to the Royal Parks for a workout before returning to the enclosed Garden Terrace for a whisky. The “third movement”: il Pampero. Less a movement than a symphonic poem, the hotel restaurant, Il Pampero, is a journey in its own right. In terms of composition, Executive Chef, Claudio Covino, in the company of a highly talented sous chef, Carmine Giannino, infuse traditional Italian recipes with an ever-growing repertoire of nuances. As conductors into this underworld

of hedonism go, the assistant manager, Vittorio Boano, makes the adventure for me and my partner both worthwhile and informative. Paired with an exceptional selection of wines throughout, the meal begins with grilled seasonal Porcini doused with a light honey, mustard and lemon dressing. Accompanying the dish is a rocket and parmesan salad generously sprinkled with roasted hazelnuts and seasonal black truffles. As variation on this theme, Boano serves up a homemade Egg Pardelle complete with Porcini, naturally thickened Porcini cream, olive oils and a smattering of truffles. For entrée, we try a taster’s combination of Tagliatara Di Costa Di Manzo (the 28-day aged ribeye steak) with rocket salad, parmesan shavings and aged balsamic vinegar, Abbacchio (a very succulent slowly roasted lamb), and, the fish of the day, a Marinated Bluefin Tuna grilled and flamed

with rocket and tomatoes. Though sated, we have difficulty resisting the pistachio and semolina tart with ricotta cream as well as the milk chocolate cream with cold tonka bean zabaione. After a postprandial stroll through the tranquil district of Belgravia, the “fourth movement” begins. We spend the night in our room reviewing material from some of the artists we’ll be writing for. The large screen TV is fine for viewing, the desk easy to work at, and the smart lighting allows us to adjust the mood from work, to sensual. to sleep-inducing. Well-rested the following morning, we shower and have a breakfast at il Pampero. Making our way to SARM studios, I have the uncanny feeling that I know just how Marquee Grosvenor felt as he made his way to Parliament some two hundred odd years ago. thehari.com

LUCAS ASHER Self-Made Technology Millennial Multi-Millionaire By Hillary Latos Photographed By Ofer Yakov

W

hen you first meet Lucas Asher he evokes a larger than life personality. But he is a true rags to riches story. As a homeless teenager he understood the meaning of abject poverty and now donates a substantial amount of wealth to helping the homeless. Similar to Ashton Kutcher who is an actor turned tech investor, Asher is a prolific songwriter that is also a tech investor and entrepreneur. With a background in computer science coupled with a strong work ethic, Asher made his first million before he was 20 through web development services and has become one of the most prominent millennial investors in the world with his acute sense of selecting strategic tech companies to invest in during the early stages. Here Resident speaks to Asher about his entrepreneurial endeavors, music career, athletic pursuits, and what inspires greatness. Tell us about how you got started. I feel very fortunate to have had tremendous luck as a technology angel investor.

I’ve been an early stage investor in over 35 high profile tech companies including eight IPOs for Pinterest, Eventbrite, Spotify, and Adaptive Biotechnologies.

path and a statistical person will look for metrics that validate their thesis which can be quantified by users or revenue. They also must demonstrate grit, perseverance and resilience.

After making my first million before 20, I became a serial entrepreneur. One of my favorite investments to date is in Space X- and the general acceleration in the colonization of Mars and ubiquitous Internet. On the music side I’ve written songs licensed by the NY Yankees, ESPN, the NFL and I’m also a songwriter with RZA from the Wu Tang Clan. I recorded at Rick Rubin’s Studio, a legendary music producer and I’m coming out with a new song in January 2020 with one of Kanye West’s music producers.

After that, I may make an investment, and then you can pivot on the business model or strategy and make course adjustments.

What kind of things do you look for in your investments? I only invest in tech and I look for technical founders with a strong math or physics background that have critical thinking. If you’re technically minded you will look for indicators that you are on the right

After investing in over 35+ technology driven companies we currently have billion dollar market cap with Tower Equity. I don’t really focus on ideas. Most ideas have been around forever. For instance, with Airbnb, it is pretty documented Paul Allen had the idea for that in the 90s. Paul Graham, the cofounder of Y Combinator who incubated Airbnb and Dropbox said a startup is a temporary state, it’s not meant to be in that phase for a number of years. The idea is to become a company that is sustainable.

How do you identify value? It’s based on indicators that are widely accepted. Such as a user base if each user is worth about $100 annually, we can make a valuation. Another is a multiple of revenue. I don’t believe in story investing with a charismatic founder or an irrational metric. I come from a math and computer background and I need to see numbers. What do you see as the next big thing to invest in? My thesis is that network connectivity will be ubiquitous. 5G and Starlink will unleash a renaissance in the app sector where apps that weren’t possible will be possible. Right now three to four billion people aren’t even on the internet yet. E-commerce will be huge in developing countries and there will be a huge surge with the new users. There will be mobile apps that supersede the popular apps today like Instagram. We will share music across different territories. Right now, there are different licenses for music intellectual property across territories. I predict, soon, it will be seamless to share any recorded music across territorial borders. Raw resources will also be important. I’ve invested in the metals sector and drive a lot of metals distribution in North America. We offer rare earth metals and base metals such as aluminum, copper, and steel. I also am seeding investments in asteroid mining as I believe it has the potential to be a trillion dollar frontier with the advent of space commercialization. The supply chain dynamics are all broken and antiquated. We think we can distribute metals in a more efficient manner and at a lower cost for consumers. I’m also interested in tech protocols, in the fintech space specifically ubiquitous API’s can bring costs down in commissions and fees. If you think about the transfer of money, the framework for liquidity was programmed in the 1970s via ACH and it’s antiquated. It’s an area I’m heavily invested in. What is your ultimate goal? We live in a very disruptive time. I want to use technology to connect as many people as I can. I have a utopian idealism with technology. I view technology right now as a mechanism and catalyst for efficiency potentially bringing in a new golden era. This is what I do in the music space already as the CEO of revo.fm, everyone can listen to a song across all territories and connect with their friends through music. At the end of the day writing music or code is based on the same principals of math with many similarities.

What is your philosophy on life? I’m not that interested or motivated in money. I look at money as a utility like electricity. People aren’t that interested in it, but, when you need it, your life might depend on it. And this is why I think I was able to become relatively successful. Money is not the focus of my life, but rather disruption, innovation, and customer satisfaction. My other hero is Jeff Bezos and I love how he made customer satisfaction the core of his business and users always have to be happy. I think if I wasn’t an entrepreneur or musician I would probably be an academic. My other hero would be Benjamin Franklin, who was actually turned down by Harvard according to reports and had only two years of formal education.

That’s why I am focusing my attention on the music sharing space with revo. Services like Apple and Spotify limit users where they can only share with other friends on the same platform and have created a walled garden. Eventually this cuts down on sharing and the social experience. Revo lets friends share their music with each other regardless of which platform they are on for free. My venture firm Tower Equity also invests in the commercialization of space and we’re making a bet that private companies can do a better job in space than governments can. That seems a bit crazy on face value because governments can monetize debt with endless budgets, so how can a company that’s fiscally conservative beat the government? That is exactly what is happening. Those artificial constraints are making private companies more effective than governments.

What does being a disrupter mean to you? All of the innovation is not coming from the establishment, it’s coming from the disrupters who think differently. The revolutionary spirit is non violent and also a very positive force in order to effect change and values that reciprocate - democracy, equal rights, and better tools to live more efficiently.

What are your other interests? I’m an avid professional skydiver. I’m about to do one of the highest non oxygen jumps in addition to skydiving over the pyramids of Giza on a military C-130 plane. It’s going to be very extreme. My other hero I recently had lunch with is Richard Branson and I’m inspired by his life and how he

historically used extreme stunts to promote the Virgin brand. I’ve always liked adrenaline, and being an entrepreneur is always a precarious job. You become familiar with the uncertain and skydiving is about as risky as you can get. It helps you make decisions under pressure, which Is a skill I think is very valuable. What goes through your mind before a jump? You have to be cognizant of your own mortality. Every time you jump it could be your last moment on Earth especially if you are doing something extreme. What mantra do you live by? Nature loves courage, it’s a reminder that there is no shortage in the world of things we need for sustenance. The greatest deficit in the 21st century is courage. Not enough people are willing to take a risk. Courage is one of the scarcest things in the world. I always need to remind myself that I don’t need more resources or capital, I need more courage.

SERGIO ACEVEDO Actors to Watch For

By Hillary Latos Photographed By Lazaro Llanes & Hugo Barbosa

T

hey say if you can make it here you can make it anywhere- where hard work and perseverance can lead you to your dreams. A prime example of this trajectory is NYC’s latest model turned actor Sergio Acevedo. Born in Allentown, PA, a steel town New York crooner Billy Joel put on the map, Sergio knew since he was 10 that acting was in his blood after he landed his first commercial. He joined his middle school and high-school drama club. After some college in Orlando, FL he decided to further his career in Miami and New York City as a model and actor and perfected his thespian

techniques studying Meisner and Scene Study at T.Schreiber Studios and also attending on-camera classes at Susan Batson Studio.

is a lead role for Ryan Sarno’s new film- so be sure to watch for it. Here Resident speaks to this rising star about what’s next on the horizon.

He has gone on to appear in numerous short-films, commercials, music videos, and international modeling campaigns. Health & fitness are very important to him, he also writes poetry and is a songwriter. His recent project is a starring role in a TV show pilot called Entitled that just got signed by Take Three Talent and is now being pitched to television networks for distribution. His next project

How did you get started as an actor? When I was at the age of 8 I remember my mother taking me to auditions. In 2013 I moved to Miami and thats when I started commercial acting and modeling. But it wasn’t until I moved to NYC in 2015 that I started to take everything super serious. I got a lot of work as a model doing lookbooks, campaigns, runway and fashion editorials for

magazines. I then started auditioning and booking for roles in short films to get my acting reel together. I landed my first theatre play that was written and directed by Estelle Girard Parks, which was an amazing experience. Which actors have inspired you the most? Naomi Watts, Viola Davis, and Matthew Mcconaughey. I think they are some of the best actors in the world. How these actors make you feel while watching their performance on screen is mesmerizing to me. They can make you go through so many emotions. As an artist/ actor this is my goal, I want to make an impact on my audience. Was it easy to make the transition from modeling to acting? I was always an actor since I was younger, but people knew me more as a model so it was more about breaking the stereotype and showing everyone that I’m capable of acting. What was your biggest breakthrough? The TV show pilot that I have been working on for the past year. Its a very special project to me and the cast and crew I worked with are absolutely amazing. We had an amazing outcome at the premiere. We are very confident in this show, so Netflix, HBO, or whoever is reading this check it out! What are some of the biggest challenges that you face? You mean besides all the other amazing talent in NYC? Haha I would saying beating myself up over things you have no control over. There are times I feel defeated and have an internal battle with myself. I’ve come a long way and learned as long as I’ve done my absolute best then thats all that matters. What would your dream role be? A role by one of my favorite directors Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. I want a role that would get me nominated for an Academy Award. A role showcasing various skills that the character is so believable and the acting is so intense it brings multiple emotions to the audience. What are some of your current projects? I just recently shot an American Express print campaign and Nivea commercial. I’m also part of Comedy Central’s social media sketches which has been an ongoing gig. I’m working on getting my poetry out there as well and getting it published. Also songwriting for several artists. As of now, I’m preparing for my leading role in a film by Ryan Sarno. Are there any mantras that you live by? I never want to wonder, what if...? Just go for it, don’t give up and never live life with regret. @flowgio

DR. ANUJ SHAH Interventional Cardiologist

W

e sat down with renowned interventional cardiologist Dr. Anuj R. Shah to learn more about his road to success. Dr. Shah is one of the youngest interventional cardiologists to perform 10,000 cases. The Founder of Apex Heart and Vascular also just completed 1,000 vein cases. Dr. Anuj R Shah is a renowned interventional Cardiovascular Disease Specialist and the Founder and director of Apex Heart and Vascular Care. Dr. Shah is recognized as one of the leading interventional cardiology experts in performing procedures such as Angiography, Angioplasty, Atherectomy, percutaneous LVAD, Peripheral Angiography, Laser venous ablation and foam sclerotherapy. He currently resides in Lower Manhattan. We caught up with Dr. Shah to learn more about how he got started. Dr. Shah worked as a vascular director at several institutes for 4-5 years after training and he has completed more than 10K cases. “I am probably one of the few interventional cardiologists under the age of 40 to get to that number in the Northeast,” said Dr. Shah. He began his career as the vascular director of a few prestigious institutes at the age of 29 and focused

98 | resident.com

By w. a. muller on helping people with cardiac and vascular ailments. “I trained at one of the top interventional cardiology institutes performing and fixing complex blockages in the heart and legs at high volume centers,” said Dr. Shah. He has published over 50 abstracts in cardiology and got trained under the biggest names in interventional cardiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center. We were eager to learn how this cardiology leader and lower Manhattan resident paved the way to success on his medical journey helping patients. How did your parents shape your career as an interventional cardiologist? Dr. Shah: I grew up in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. Both of my parents were pediatricians and my Dad (Dr. Raju C. Shah) is a very successful academic. He is President of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics, an organization of 2,800 plus pediatricians and he has authored multiple papers, abstracts and book chapters. I was always inspired by my parent’s desire to help others. Growing up, I spent weekends rounding at the hospital with my Dad instead of typical childhood activities. The word “no” didn’t exist in his vocabulary, so no matter who needed his help, whether it was a really poor farmer from a remote village whose child

was dying or an ambitious junior attending who was looking for a mentor - my Dad was always there to help them! How has heart disease impacted you personally? Dr. Shah: My own personal tragedies with heart disease have had a tremendous impact on my career. My uncle passed away suddenly at the age of 55 from a heart attack, leaving my cousins and wife behind. Last year, one of my best friends from high school died at the age of 38 from a massive heart attack. Heart disease and plaque buildup (atherosclerosis) is very common in Southeast Asians. I am passionate about researching what makes us vulnerable as Southeast Asians and what we can do to prevent it and detect heart disease earlier. What made you decide to launch your own private practice? Dr. Shah: After working for large healthcare organizations for years, I realized that the need for change in the healthcare system is necessary and inevitable, but it is very slow at large organizations. Often, large healthcare organizations (HCO’s) suffer from bureaucracy like any other corporation. Despite being in leadership roles at the hospitals I worked at, I felt like I was riding an elephant.

It is possible to steer the elephant with patience and persistence, but it would take time and the changes would be slow. For example, you would know that certain new technologies and innovations are needed for better and more comprehensive patient care, but bringing this technology to large HCO’s would require jumping through a lot of hoops, red tape and a stringent approval process. What are some problems with the current healthcare system in America? Dr. Shah: We live in a very challenging time when major healthcare decisions are determined based on some numbers on an excel spreadsheet, rather than keeping the patient’s best interest in mind. Additionally, many Americans do not realize that people in larger cities and more desirable places to live will end up receiving better healthcare facilities and a better talent pool of doctors. Underserved and urban areas with poorly insured patients are less likely to get talented doctors and state of the art facilities. Once I realized this, I decided to build a cardiology and vascular practice focused on patient care that could cater to these underserved populations. I wanted to bring world class expertise to underserved areas in New Jersey. I take care of many patients with no insurance. After 7 years of working in hospitals such as Good Samaritan Hospital, Mount Sinai and Hackensack, I started my own private practice, Apex Heart and

Vascular Care in 2018. Apex is a cardiology and vascular practice in New Jersey that provides cutting edge cardiovascular care. I also launched a vein restoration clinic in New Jersey for patients with painful or unsightly varicose veins. I help patients live without any symptoms and with confidence. Vein restoration clinic focuses on vascular care. This means getting detected for venous insufficiency, preventing venous insufficiency and varicose veins from getting worse and restoring overall venous health so that people feel less leg pain, swelling and other symptoms. Vein restoration clinic also performs cosmetic vein procedures to help with aesthetics. We innovate and constantly change and adapt. For example, if someone has high blood pressure and they come to our office, we not only treat them but we also spend a lot of time explaining to them how they developed high blood pressure and what they can do differently. Our clinicians stay in touch with the patients to motivate them to take charge of their health and modify their lifestyle. Dr. Shah currently teaches residents, medical students and fellows at various institutes and previously served an Assistant professor of medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in addition to running Apex Vascular. 10,000 cases later, Dr. Shah enjoys spending time in clinical care and building a state-of-the-art cardiovascular practice. He is currently researching the rise of Artificial Intelligence in the field of cardiology.

He holds seven board certifications in Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology. Dr. Shah graduated from one of the top universities in India, Gujarat University, in 2003 with six gold medals and honors. He completed a residency and fellowship at University of Connecticut and published more than 50 articles and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals. He was trained in complex cardiac and vascular cases at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. Dr. Shah won The Young Investigator Award from American Society of Nuclear Cardiology and has spoken at several national cardiology conferences on cardiogenic shock. Dr. Shah has held leadership positions including Director of Vascular Interventions at Good Samaritan Hospital and Bon Secours Hospital in NY. He also served as the Assistant Professor of Medicine at The Mount Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Shah currently has hospital privileges and performs interventional procedures at The Hackensack University Medical Center, St. Mary’s Medical Center, St. Michael’s Medical Center, and Englewood Hospital. He specializes in the treatment of circulatory disease, varicose veins, swelling of the legs, and venous ulcers. Dr. Shah holds seven board certifications in Coronary and peripheral vascular interventions, Level II Echocardiography, Level II Nuclear Cardiology, Level II Vascular Ultrasound Interpretation, Level II Coronary CT Angiography and ABI/PVR Analysis. Dr. Shah is the President of Bergen Indian Medical Association. Dr. Shah has been named a “Top Physician” in the 2015 edition of Leading Physician of the World and has been among the “Top Doctors of New Jersey” since 2015. He was recently featured on Healthline on Artificial Intelligence and AFIB.

This family-friendly performance features Chris Cox, the award-winning “mind reader who can’t read minds.” Cox currently resides in London and is the star of the BBC’s Chris Cox’s Mind-Boggling Magic and Killer Magic. This mind-blowing mentalist, who has performed in popular West End productions, is excited to entertain New York audiences once again. “We’ve become a part of people’s holiday traditions,” explained Cox. “It’s a new cast with a different version of the show. We put in a lot of effort to make it a real magical experience and spread holiday cheer. There’s nothing better than actual magic, so it’s especially great to see holiday magic! I have done three Western runs in addition to performing at the Sydney Opera House. As the mentalist or mind reader of the show, I’m sometimes thought of as scary or sinister, but my approach is to make it fun and silly and almost undermine how amazing it is.” According to Cox, the show is also very interactive. “The crowd takes part in every show. Each performance is totally different because it really changes depending on the audience and who I pick at random.” From daring escapes to technological wonders, The Illusionists, which has toured around the US, Canada and London, will take your imagination on a wild and wonderous ride. The show features America’s Got Talent contestants and international superstars. Cox and his cast, whom he has described as “our own little family,” arrived in New York before the opening of the show in order to finalize new bits of material. Let’s just say they are ready to get this show on the road – or at least on everyone’s radar! The creative Cox, who has been working on a new BBC series as well as an American television show, still loves performing for a live audience. “To be able to experience it together is the greatest way to see magic,” explained Cox. When he received his first magic kit as a child, this mesmerizing mentalist knew he had discovered his passion. He even used his university loan to put on a show at the Edinburgh Festival, and he hasn’t stopped his show stopping ways since, especially in The Illusionists! “This really is the world’s biggest magic show. It makes even the most cynical of adults a kid again, where anything is possible, and you can get swept away in it. It’s a delight for me when everyone’s mouths drop. It’s a show for all generations, from kids to grandparents. I love watching couples on dates in their 20s and 30s – it’s a good ice breaker! It’s a magic show, but it’s funny and interactive, and you can see them trying to work out how everything is happening.” His career has been magical in itself. After taking in his first Broadway show at the Neil Simon Theatre, Cox is now performing at the Neil Simon Theater himself! The Illusionist – Magic of the Holidays - is running from now until January 5th 2020.

KATHRYN GALLAGHER Star of Jagged Little Pill By Tamsen Fadal

T

here are more and more original shows on Broadway these days and Jagged Little Pill is definitely one that audiences have been waiting for. Tamsen Fadal, PIX11 news anchor

110 | resident.com

as well as the host of Broadway Profiles, interviews one of the stars for her monthly show.

that is now on Broadway. It is inspired by her groundbreaking album.

Jagged Little Pill is the Alanis Morrisette musical

Kathryn Gallagher is a second-generation Broadway

Tamsen: Is everyone who started out still in the show? Kathryn: Pretty much. It’s really special. I would trust every single person on that stage and that creative team with my life. We have seen it all. It’s what happens in the theatre. You live together. We all live at the Broadhurst now and its family! Tamsen: Talk about who you play. Kathryn: I play Bella Fox. She’s a 17-year old. She’s a senior in high school. She runs the student poetry journal. She is very creative. She’s fun and she sort of goes through a traumatic event I think Bella Fox teaches me something new about bravery and about honesty every single time I’m on that stage and it kind of reminds you that when you speak your truth, however messy or complicated it is, you find your people and you find your place. And, I think there is something irresistible about honesty. I get to sing a brand-new Alanis song which is very exciting.

she’s another kid of a Broadway actor like me so it’s definitely fun to be the second generation together. Tamsen: Did you know you were going to be on stage your whole life. Kathryn: My dad definitely was very clear he wanted me to have a chance to be a kid first. But I was definitely clear I was going to end up doing this. I remember one time I saw a listing online for a movie called “Camp Rock” and I told my dad I have to do this. She is a songwriter and she is 16, I have to do this. This is perfect for me. Disney didn’t agree. But I ran into my room screaming and crying I picked up my guitar I wrote a song called “I’m okay” and I said this is how I feel. And I sang it to him, and he let me audition! Jagged Little Pill is now on Broadway at the Broadhurst Theatre, 235 W 44th Street, NY, NY.

Tamsen: Have you met her (Alanis Morrisette) Kathryn: Oh yes! She’s amazing. She is the greatest person. They say don’t meet your heroes, but I would say unless your hero is Alanis Morrisette, and then absolutely do. Tamsen: Talk about working with Celia Rose Gooding. Kathryn: Celia is amazing. She is so young and so smart and funny and a heart of gold. And

Be sure to check out Broadway Profiles with Tamsen Fadal. It airs monthly on WPIX-TV sharing the stories of people both on and off the stage who bring Broadway to life. star, the daughter of actor Peter Gallagher. She plays Bella Fox in the show. Tamsen: You have been performing this for about two years now. Kathryn: The very first lab started on basically Halloween of 2017. It is absolutely insane. It is such a dream come true! We built this thing. It existed before us and then when we came in, it’s our baby. I am so proud of this show. And it’s been such a journey.

DOMINGO ZAPATA Artist & Humanitarian By Bennett Marcus Honored at N.Y. Summit The New York Summit (NYS) honored Spanish Artist Domingo Zapata, who recently completed New York City’s largest mural at One Times Square. He was honored alongside Kathleen Kennedy, Bernice King, Ilyasah Shabazz, and Carlos Baute. The Summit was held at the Angel Orensanz Foundation and was organized by the Inspiring Committed Leaders Foundation. The New York Summit is the most important Spanish-Speaking leadership event in the United States. orensanz.org Art Basel Miami In December, Domingo’s sculpture series, “Las Meninas”, will be part of Miami Art Week. Ten colorfully painted Ladies-in-Waiting made famous by the painter Diego Velazquez in his painting “Las Meninas”, which hangs in the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid, Spain will be placed at various locations around the city, including the Delano and SLS Hotels, and at the David Rosen Galleries in the design district. davidrosengalleries.com Art lovers are being challenged to take selfies with all of the sculptures with the hashtag #findzapata. The first person to take a photo with all of them will be invited to paint with Zapata at his studio.

Latino Heritage Celebration Zapata was honored at the Brooklyn Borough President’s Latino Heritage Celebration in October. The theme of the event was Young Artists/Old School and Domingo gave the keynote speech. Zapata has also created the illustrations for The Lonely Princess by Marie Ferraro from Lightswitch Learning, which comes out in time for the holidays in November. The book is about the power of friendship, generosity, and respect for the differences between people. Life is a Dream Domingo’s 15-story mural, which wraps around the One Times Square features his mantra, “Life is a Dream” amidst flowers, flamingos and polo ponies. The artist said, “For me, it is an honor to be part of the story by creating “Life is a Dream”, the largest mural in New York. I want to convey this message to people from all over the world who visit Times Square and who can enjoy and get to know my art.” The mural will be on view through January 1st. Galleries & Social Media While many artists remain firmly in the gallery model, Zapata has decided to create inroads into social media sites such as Instagram, where he currently has close to 40,000 followers — and through which he has sold paintings to collectors. “I don’t

have anything against galleries or the gallery model,” he said, laughing. “It’s a misinterpretation; if you Google it, you could find a Zapata at sixty shows.” Patronage & The Pope But the artist is adamant that the future lies in the past; or in the case of the art world, patronage. Pointing at the large overhead that many galleries and their artists have to deal with, Zapata notes that social media is providing a conduit between artists and collectors that didn’t exist a decade ago. “In today’s world, with social media being such a big influence, bigger than regular media, everybody looks at Instagram, Twitter, Facebook,” he says. “Now, you have all these sites which bring the collector and painter together, so they can start their own relationship. And that’s where we’re going. I don’t think these platforms are a conditionbased model; they’re a service model, where they’re introducing you to the variety; they put you right in front of the source. That’s how it was done a hundred years ago, and that’s how it’s going to be for the next hundred years.” Speaking of history, Zapata heads to Rome in January to meet with Pope Francis to plan their next art project. Domingo has painted with the Pope for the last three years to benefit the Vatican’s charity Scholas Occurrentes. dzapata.com

KELLY FISCHER Street Art: Bowery Hotel Lobby By w. a. muller Miami Art Week: SCOPE Artist Kelly Fischer is set to premiere her latest work entitled Street Art: Bowery Hotel Lobby at SCOPE, the critically acclaimed art show in Miami. The work will be presented through the Volgelsang Gallery from Belgium, with whom Fischer has shown with in New York and Brussels, as well as SCOPE for the second time. Fischer will also be showing another piece called Street Art Gstaad, Switzerland, a large-scale mural, at the Mr. C Hotel. Her artwork will be exhibited in conjunction with Art Living Miami and Contemporaryartprojectsusa. “I had wanted to create this large-scale artwork. I really needed to express myself on a large-scale canvas,” said Fischer.

as older people, there was a lot of street art, lots of cars. Really pretty much everything you can imagine on one street.” The Most Beautiful Color of All Fischer has also published 12 children’s books, which she tries to work in with her art exhibits. The Santa FeChildren’s Museum sponsored a special

Blending Worlds The Consulate General of Switzerland in New York City hosted Kelly’s solo exhibition entitled Kelly Fischer: Blending Worlds. The eight-piece exhibit (four in New York and four in Switzerland), was the seventh edition of Art @ The Consulate, a curatorial program which showcases Swiss artists in the United States. “You have to be a Swiss citizen to exhibit there so that means the world to me because I’ve been a Swiss citizen, as well as an American one, for over 30 years,” Fischer said. The Swiss artist has recently shown at the Cultural Center in Mijas, in Malaga, Spain, ANF Gallery in Memphis, TN and the Jackson Hole Fine Art Fair. HG Contemporary Art Center serves as her advisor. Street Art Series In her semi-abstract expressionist work, Fischer adds textures and colors layer by layer to tell a story, which is driven by her creative impulses. “I think a lot of what colors I’m going to start with. Then, I can start adding layers for depth,” she goes on to say, “One thing that is super important to look for in all of my work are the circles; circles represent people and they’re usually the top layer.” SoHo & Chinatown The Street Art Series is one that is very important to Kelly, and one that is constantly growing. While in the city, Fischer is usually in SoHo, or the West or East Village. Fischer can also be spotted walking along the Hudson, enjoying the architecture and people of New York. These same people and places have inspired her series, which includes Avenue B, SoHo, Chinatown, among other places. These are a complete contrast from the work Kelly produces when she is in Switzerland, such as St. Bernard’s Pass, which give off a more secluded vibe; reminiscent of Fischer’s mind state during these times. Avenue B Though she visits New York often, one stay in the city in particular was a revelation. “I had a solo exhibition there last May, and I stayed in the East Village, on Avenue B for a month,” Fischer explains. “Just the people – there were a lot of schools in the area, a lot of children walking around, as well

edition of her book, “The Most Beautiful Color of All,” where she visited and painted murals of the children. She works with Miami Dade University’s children’s program, and they’ve given her solo exhibitions for her art. “I try to combine these [interests] the best I can.” kelly-fischer.com

LILLIAN GORBACHINCKY Artist & Designer By Anya Firestone

I

f the opulent King Louis XIV of France reigned today, he would unquestionably have commissioned Lillian Gorbachincky to design his Palace of Versailles. The Sun King’s famous Hall of Mirrors would shine with Gorbachincky’s contemporary mastery of gilded mirrors with verre eglomise and fusions glass and metal that convert space into a work of art. Since 2006, Gorbachincky’s company, Cosmopolitan Glass & Metal, has established itself as the premier source for artistic and architectural glass and metalwork for today’s royal elite: brands including Tiffany & CO., Graff Diamonds, Christian Dior, and Chanel; AD100 Designers and architects such as Peter Marino, Stephen Sills, Jamie Drake, Fox-Nahem; and the private nobility of the Upper East Side--all of whom, like Louis, seek the finest designs craftsmanship in glass and metalwork. Applying increasingly complex techniques, Lillian is expanding her business today with her new gallery at the venerable A&D building in Manhattan. “Art, Kitchens and Interiors by Lillian Gorbachincky” showcases her namesake’s line of bespoke furniture and artwork for both commercial and residential projects. Clients come to discover a showroom that feels like an enchanted treasure cove: stained,

116 | resident.com

marbleized and carved glass contrasts to an array of monumental furniture pieces such as chairs, dining tables, consoles, and art installations. While Gorbachincky takes inspiration from nature, she also constantly challenges it, and her works that address the dichotomy between natural and manmade evidently stem from her background. Born in the east of Russia, Gorbachincky was privy to the natural wonders of Kamchatka’s violent volcanoes, a memory that surfaces, quite literally, in her work—where explosive fusions of golds and glass resemble an exquisite aftermath of what would be the world’s most glamorous volcanic crescendo. Her creative process is further enhanced by her background as a classically trained singer: “My connection to music is not just auditory or vocal, but uniquely visual,” she explains. “The act of singing while I sculpt or sketch becomes a synesthetic experience, and a portal through which I can access new ideas and bring them to life.” The daughter of the lead ballerina at the State Ballet in Armenia, Lillian was always privy to human expression, and her parent’s gatherings of artists at home inspired her constantly. “At four I was mixing oils creating paintings inspired by Ayvazovsky, the great Russian marine painter who captured the sea

in exquisite blues and aqua tones. These very colors surface constantly in my work today.” Indeed, the famous Tiffany & Co. blue would wind up coloring her portfolio. After her first milestone project with the iconic jeweler for their boutique at Printemps in Paris in 2007, she then worked on over forty Tiffany & Co. stores worldwide. In 2013, she collaborated with the brand’s Creative Director to create whimsical window installations inspired by The Great Gatsby, which today are preserved in the Tiffany & Co. archive. While her artistry continues to define the facades of the world’s top luxury brands, it is increasingly coveted for interior, residential spaces: a glass fountain wall for a prominent collector glistens uptown, and her famous “million dollar kitchen,” awarded Best in Show: Furniture by the ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) in 2019, is now on view in her gallery. Through nature and artifice, imagination and technology, Gorbachincky continues to sparkle while carving a regal name for herself in the space between art and design. Gorbachincky works and lives in New York with her husband and their four young children, who she notes, are her most impressive creations. cosmopolitanglassandmetal.com

SUSAN J. BARRON Depicting The Invisible By David Sparrow Artist at Soho House NYC artist Susan J. Barron tells the story of two veterans who walked into her show, “Depicting The Invisible,” with their service dogs. They approached a portrait featuring a handsome bearded man crouched with a dog. The phrase “We found each other” haloes his head, and he is surrounded by quotes that tell his story: a friend dying in his arms in Iraq; relentless, vivid nightmares; two suicide attempts; and a dog trained to comfort him and wake him up, saving him from his nightmares. The veterans were visibly affected, and told Barron, “this is a portrait of us.” Depicting The Invisible Barron created “Depicting The Invisible”, a portrait series of veterans suffering from PTSD, after learning that 22 US veterans commit suicide every day. “I was so shocked and appalled by the statistic,” she says, “I wanted to shine a light on the epidemic of PTSD and suicide, and I really felt that, if people could understand what’s going on, then they would be inspired to step up and make a difference.” Barron interviewed dozens of veterans, creating portraits to tell their stories. As the SoHo artist travels with her show, she has encountered “uncountable” veterans drawn to the images and the stories. Her goal, she says, is to make a human connection, and to give these veterans who often feel forgotten or invisible, a voice. “Every time the

118 | resident.com

portrait series travels to a new city,” she says, “it magnifies their voices.” Conversations When she isn’t traveling, Barron is working on a different, lighter, project; “Conversations”. Here Barron uses imagery thoughout the cannon of art history to compose completely new works. These digital collages on canvas create a new visual dialogue that hyperlinks us through time and place. Her piece “Luncheon on the Grass,” for example, features Edouard Manet’s master work of a nude woman, but she’s sitting across from--in conversation with-an Alberto Vargas pin-up girl. “Two women painted by men over a century apart,” Barron explains, “The thought of what their conversation is, it’s just so delightful to me.” SoHo The “Conversations” canvases stand nine feet tall, and span styles and eras, and are all designed from Barron’s laptop, often at her home base of SoHo House in NYC. “During the day, there’s a whole collection of people working on their laptops,” she says, “some of them are writing plays or screenplays, or they’re writing the great American novel...and some of them are creating art.” Her perfect workday, she says, includes a stop at the Whitney Museum of American Art or a walk through the local galleries.

A Test Just before the debut of “Depicting the Invisible,” Barron faced her biggest challenge. The mother of one of her subjects called her and told her that he had taken his life, or “fallen victim to the 22,” as Barron calls it. She was heartbroken. She had spent months talking to him and growing closer to him. Could she have known? Was it disrespectful to go through with the show? But, she says, other veterans reached out to her with sobering words of encouragement. She had to continue, they said, because Damon’s tragedy happens 22 times every day, and this is why you are doing this work; to stop it. She went through with the show, and visitors can still see Damon’s portrait, wreathed in quotes where he wrestles with his PTSD and the specter of suicide. Inspiration After DTI and Conversations, Barron is considering a portrait series on survivors of September 11th. She is inspired by the opportunity to tell the stories of those we might otherwise never hear. As she says, recounting the words of a former professor, “There are only so many pieces (of art) that you can make in your life, so make them count.” susanjbarron.com
