THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING TRUE TO YOURSELF
F
ebruary marks the beginning of Chinese New Year which happens to be the Year of the Pig, which represents good fortune with a realistic perspective. With this in mind, we chose the beautiful and talented Award winning television journalist, author and native New Yorker, Maria Bartiromo for our cover story. With over 25 years in the business Maria was not only a pioneer in financial broadcast journalism as the first reporter to stream live from the floor of the NYSE, but she has also interviewed some of the most powerful people on the planet. From top CEOs to royalty, heads of state, policy makers, and presidents, she has had first hand access to the movers and shakers who have shaped the last quarter of the century. She has been eye witness to the rise and fall of economies around the world, been on the frontlines of global changes, the dot com rise and fall, and objectively reported on the biggest economic cycles affecting the planet. From moderating presidential debates to hosting the World Economic Forum at Davos, Maria Bartiromo is one of the most seasoned TV journalists in the business. Besides her accomplishments and strong work ethic, she also maintains a strong sense of self and humility which resonates so well with her viewers. Though her persona has been influenced by the leaders she has interviewed, she always remembers where she came from, with strong family ties to her Italian American roots. Beautiful inside and out, this month Maria speaks about her illustrious career, where she sees
growth in the financial market, and what she loves so much about living in NYC. The mystery of the East meets the elegance of the West for our winter fashion editorial that was inspired by the dawn of the lunar New Year. The power of red has always been a symbol of strength and power which is translated in our stunning fashion spread. With the arctic blast blowing in this winter, our minds are focused on winter getaways. Whether it’s skiing in Colorado or a weekend jaunt to Florida, February is an ideal month to explore a new destination. As we are in the trenches of Los Angeles’ Award season that culminates this month with The Grammys and The Oscars, we went to the heart of the celeb fueled action of LA and covered the hottest spots in West Hollywood and Beverly Hills. Further afield we ventured to the exotic and beautiful landscape of Sri Lanka, where time seems to have stood still and life moves a bit slower. Filled with majestic and untouched landscapes, tea plantations, tropical beaches, and a delicious cuisine, this is a gem waiting to be discovered. The feeling of serenity and spirituality in Sri Lanka is undeniable and sometimes you have to take yourself out of your familiar surroundings to discover yourself and realize what truly makes you happy. THE AWARDS SEASON Oscar, Winter Show, Young Collectors, Prince of Chintz, Celebrity Chef Birthright, Circle of Spoons, Sleepover at the Museum & Viennese Opera Ball By R. Couri Hay with Photos by Patrick Mcmullan The Winners It’s Oscar time and I’m betting on The Favourite, a riveting period piece (1665 -1714) about a threeway lesbian love story centering on Queen Anne of England, which is up for 10 awards including Best Picture. Olivia Colman, who plays the complicated Queen, is head-to-head with Glenn Close who stars in The Wife for the Best Actress crown. Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone, each scored a Best Supporting nomination. Stone said, “Superbad was the raunchiest movie I’ve been in but this is a close second.” Weisz, who is married to Daniel Craig, aka James Bond, confessed “I’m not comfortable with the thought of envy, which some people thrive on.” ……My second choice is the controversial Green Book, a funny and insightful bromance about a gay, black, pianist (Mahershala Ali) and his Italian, blue collar, driver played by Viggo Mortensen who said of the movies critics “I’ve seen the same people accuse the movie of being both a ‘white savior movie’ and a ‘magical negro movie.’ It’s like, make up your mind. What is it? It’s neither.”….. The Spanish language film Roma is my third choice, beautiful as it is, the English subtitles are a distraction….. is dead last on my list. Bale confided “If everyone really knew what a jerk I am in real life, I wouldn’t be so adored.” ….Tune in on February 24th and see if Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper take home any gold for A Star is Born, or if Rami Malek wins for his tour de force as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. SOCIAL SAFARI practical jokes. Wilbur recalled, “At my daughter Amanda’s Birthday he began to hand her a large Tiffany bag but dropped it on the floor with a clatter of breaking glass. It later turned out there really was no present. The bag was filled with shards of already broken window glass. A real present showed up the next morning.” “Oh hahaha!” as Mario’s buddy Aileen Mehle aka Suzy, the much missed, ne plus ultra of high society columnists used to say. Mario, whose clients included Mariah Carey, Barbara Walters and Malcom Forbes, was dubbed the “Prince of Chintz” by the media. Ross said, “I once introduced Mario to an acquaintance as the Prince of Chintz.” My friend said, “I don’t know that country. Where is it?” Mario responded, “It’s in the English Channel.” When my friend went on to ask, “How did Sam Dangremond, you become the Lucinda May prince?” Buatta’s and Sarah Bray answer was, “I @ The Winter Show was too young to become the king.” Mario is survived by his pet cockroach Harold who he used to take to grand dinner parties and quietly place on plates and then suddenly “discover the vermin” and make a huge scene to the horror of the other guests before confessing Harold was his and made of plastic. enée Willett spent her 23rd birthday working, on the set of the movie “The Yellow Birds,” shooting scenes with Jennifer Aniston. “She came over to my trailer after shooting wrapped to wish me a happy birthday and talk one on one. It was a very sweet gesture,” says Renée, who is an actress, comedienne, producer, influencer, philanthropist and MBA student.
Now 26, she has since wrapped movies featuring Alec Baldwin, Demi Moore and Molly Ringwald. Renée worked with Daniel Radcliffe on the film “Beast of Burden,” and there was a lot of down time during which the two hung out. “Finding out he is also a die-hard New York Giants fan like myself was a surprise! We ended up having a lot to talk about.”
This was only the second film she had ever done. “It was inspirational getting to work alongside her on my second film. Learning from her methods was an unparalleled experience.”
She got her start in acting in 2015, in “Sharknado 3,” soon after graduating from USC with degrees in economics, Spanish and theater. Renée obtained that first role through sheer persistence. “I met the producer at an event and got his email and basically emailed him until he had no other option but to introduce me to his casting director and let me audition.”
It was a “pretty cool start” to her career, the classically trained New York actress notes. Her next film, “The Comedian,” starred Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, Edie Falco and Danny DeVito. “It was really exciting,” she says.
Rising Star Award – NYC Intl. Film Fest On March 1, Renée is thrilled to be receiving the
Rising Star Award at The NYC International Film Festival. “It is truly humbling to receive recognition for all of my hard work and dedication in this industry,” she says. “The Sopranos” star Vincent Pastore, will accept a Lifetime Achievement Award at the ceremony. A Talent for Comedy While acting and auditioning for roles and working on her master’s degree, Renée also somehow found time to take classes at UCB and the Groundlings. She realized she wanted to do more comedic roles and started writing her own material. About a year ago, she reluctantly began doing standup comedy, and found that she loved it. Serendipity struck at a party in the Hamptons when she told a woman she was a comic but hadn’t actually done any. It turned out the woman produced shows for clubs like Gotham, and she asked, “Do

you want to do one tomorrow night in Manhattan?” Willett demurred, but the woman persisted, and she agreed to appear the following night at Comic Strip Live, where Jerry Seinfeld did his first show. “It went great and I haven’t stopped since.” She now performs regularly, mainly in New York and Tel Aviv. A lot of her jokes are about the differences in dating between NYC and L.A., and dating men of different ethnicities and of all ages. “My comedic idols are Will Farrell (if you haven’t seen my social media, I call myself ‘Will Ferrell with [bigger] boobies’), Judd Apatow (we went to the same elementary school, middle school, high school and college), and Ben Stiller (who is my wallpaper on my phone. Crazy I know, but you know, osmosis ha ha). I dream of working with any of these geniuses one day.” Renée has already enlisted Andrew Dice Clay as a mentor. Prior to shooting a film with the comedian, she went to see him perform in Huntington, NY, and they met after the show. “I did some of my bits for him; he loved it,” she says. They and others continued the evening in Manhattan, making silly videos on their phones and spit-balling ideas over 2:00 am pizza. “He may even have me open for him soon!” Renée says. What’s Next Next up is her biggest role yet, opposite Val Kilmer and Dylan McDermott in the crime drama “Cutman,” from the same producing and directing team behind “Blind,” in which Renée also appeared. “They wanted to work with me again on their next film! It was an honor getting my first offer without having to audition for the role.” McDermott was also in

“Blind,” and Renée is looking forward to working with him again. Some of her other upcoming projects include a modern-day spin on the classic Romeo and Juliet story in which she plays a news anchor who narrates the entire film. “That one will be shooting in Europe, which I am thrilled about.” In another film, “Juveniles,” about two delinquent young girls who form a friendship in a juvenile detention center, she’ll play a tough guard who ends up having a sweet spot for one of the girls. “I suggested to the director that I do my hair in cornrows,” Renée explains. “This is very opposite of my personality, you probably won’t even recognize me, so I’m very excited to play this role. It’s very special to me; it’s based on a true story and the writer, director, and leads of this film, are all female.” This summer, Renée is shooting a film with Famke Janssen and Cary Elwes in Montauk, not far from her family’s Hamptons house, so she’ll get to sleep at home while filming. It’s too early to reveal details, but Renée is currently writing her first TV pilot. Social Media Influencer With over 500,000 followers on her Instagram account, Instagram.com/reneewillett, Renée works with brands, including hotels like Park Hyatt and Restaurants like Nobu & Matsuhisa. “My Instagram has been called an ‘Upscale lifestyle for a down-to-earth girl.’ I document my exciting travels as well as funny life experiences. I care about making my followers laugh at the smallest anecdotal moments of my day.”
Her biggest ongoing partnership is with the Four Seasons. While in Thailand shooting a TV show recently, Renée decided to venture to Chiang Mai on a weekend off. The hotel arranged a Muay Thai personal training lesson, and sent her for a planting session in the rice paddys. “You want to see something funny, find my Instagram post at the Four Seasons Chiang Mai of me on a farm.” Last summer she traveled to Argentina with her brother for snowboarding in a partnership with the Four Seasons, and to Rio and the Iguazu Falls in Brazil (over the winter/New Year’s) for a partnership with Belmond. Upcoming are trips to Tokyo, Kyoto and Hong Kong for partnerships with the Park Hyatt, Four Seasons, and the Ritz-Carlton, respectively. With her outsize personality and lots to say, Renée created a second, comedic Instagram account, Tits and Chocolate Chips. Instagram.com/ titsandchoclatechips I love chocolate chip cookies, so I post cookies all over the world. It’s like a travel cookie blog with low-cut shirts.” It grew organically; people send her photos of cookies from all over, so she decided to create a separate account. “I have now become the database for all things cookie, like the best cookie locations in NYC and LA. I call it my fun alter ego.” Despite the title, the feed is PGrated. “If anything, it’s funny-sexy; there’s nothing on there my grandma can’t see.” Thailand TV Show An exciting experience for Renée was working on a Thai television show that stars Praya Lundberg, a close friend and one of that country’s most famous actresses. “It was really cool; it wasn’t an American production in Thailand, it was an Asian production.” Renée teamed up with L’Oreal Asia and Maybelline

Renée played an American barista. “I have never made coffee in my life, so they had to have an official barista trainer, who didn’t speak a word of English, show me all the steps. You can just imagine, learning something I know nothing about in a language I don’t understand, it was hilarious.” She had to learn Muay Thai for the role, and now has incorporated that into her workout routine. There were scenes taped in a famous Bangkok boxing venue in which women are not allowed in the ring. “When I first entered the ring I had to say a prayer, as is custom. Between that and seeing the chanting and spiritual nature of true Muay Thai preparation, I feel a spiritual connection to the sport and will forever hold the experience of shooting that episode in my heart.” Some later episodes were set in New York. “It was in many ways a culture shock to work with the same people, many of whom I met in Thailand, in my hometown of NYC three months later. It was like we brought Thailand to New York.” MBA Classes Renée is now earning an MBA at USC’s Marshall School of Business, focusing on film finance and the business of entertainment. Most of her classes are in the evenings, so they don’t conflict with her career. “I truly love school and am secretly a complete nerd at heart.” This semester, she threw herself a curveball, taking an advanced-level video games entrepreneurship course, where the final project consists of creating a video game and pitching it to developers. “I’ve never played a video game in my life, so this will be interesting,” she laughs.
Philanthropic Work Renée lends her time and energy to quite a few charitable causes, including UJA-Federation, Robin Hood, The China Institute, The Jewish Museum of New York and The Yiddish Theatre, and Shalva Children’s Center. She is one of the only females to play in the charity Pro-am tennis matches for The Michael Milken Prostate Cancer Foundation. “My partner is a 6’9” top Swedish player, so you can only imagine how funny we look together on the court, in contrast to my peanut height of 5’4.” Her comedy work has had an unexpected benefit: Renée has become sought after to host charity events for the many organizations she supports. She writes different, less racy material for this type of charity gala, “so my grandma can hear it.” She emceed the United Hatzalah gala in New York, helping to raise $1 million, all from young adults, and the organization recognized her in its “30 Under 30” list of young leaders giving back in a meaningful and impactful way to save lives in Israel. “When the founder told me the ceremony will be held in New York on my birthday to ensure I would be home to attend, I was truly touched.” At the next gala in LA she will again be telling her appropriate-for-grandma Jewish jokes and presenting the Humanitarian award to Jay Leno. “What an honor to have that job for the night, sharing the stage with a man I look up to so much.” Renée is active in the Shoah Foundation, which she holds close to her heart. The digital database of holocaust survivor testimonials, founded by Steven Spielberg. That database has now expanded to encompass nine genocides, including Rwanda, Nanjing, Cambodia, Guatemala, Yazidi, Rohingya and Armenian.
One moment at the organization’s recent annual gala in Beverly Hills touched her profoundly. The survivors of the Parkland, Florida school shooting attended and spoke about the horrific moments they experienced. “One major aspect I did not know until listening to these speeches, was that the students were all watching The Shoah Foundation testimonials when the shooter entered the classroom. I find it tragic that while learning of the horrors of humankind, so that we may never repeat them, the very purpose of the Shoah Foundation itself in its preservation of such memories, these students experienced another great historic horror.” The Harlem Junior Tennis & Education Program team, “The Jack,” is named for Renée’s grandfather, Jack Shapiro, who was an educator and phenomenal tennis player. “This foundation is special because we find inner city kids who have exceptional tennis skills and provide them with tutors and tennis coaches to help them earn scholarships for college.” Extreme Sports As a once professional junior tennis player, Renée is now a confirmed extreme sports junkie, indulging in activities like skydiving, paragliding and zip lining, in addition to less daring forms of exertion like spinning and boxing. Willett doesn’t just love tennis but is a dedicated football, basketball, baseball, and hockey fan of her favorite New York teams. She loves the idea of combining her passions for sports and cinema whenever possible. She recently produced a tennis-themed short called “Love” with Peter Gallagher’s son, James, starring Susan Sarandon and Boris McGiver. “I hope to one day star in a sports drama, like one of my favorite movies of all time ‘Remember The Titans.’” imdb.com/love

n the heels of her fifth anniversary with the Fox Business Network, Maria Bartiromo is one of the most popular and hardest working financial anchors in the business. As the anchor of the daily morning show, Mornings with Maria, and Maria Bartiromo’s Wall Street on the Fox Business Network, and Sunday Morning Futures on Fox News Channel, Maria anchors 16.5 hours of live programming six days a week. This past year, Mornings with Maria has taken over Squawk Box in overall viewership. Since she began her
career 25 years ago as the first TV journalist on the floor show of the New York Stock Exchange, she has been a pioneer shaping the landscape of financial news reporting. Not only has Maria interviewed some of the most powerful players in politics, business, and government asking the questions the public wants to know over the span of her career, she has also been in the front lines of the biggest world economic cycles over the last quarter of a century. But what makes her so popular and wildly successful is how she remains true to herself
with a sense of humility that resonates so well with her viewers. This month, Resident Magazine had the privilege to speak with the “Money Honey” about her impressive career and the biggest moments that have shaped her life and the world in general. Of all your interviews, who have you been most impressed by? I’ve been on the air for 25 years and have interviewed so many different people, whether its CEOs or heads of state, so it’s difficult to narrow it down to

just one person, but I would say there are a number of people I’ve been impressed with who possess certain characteristics. Examples would be Jamie Dimon, who is a straight talker and will tell it the way it is. Toby Cosgrove, the CEO of the Cleveland Clinic, is so smart in terms of healthcare and wellness, or Diane Sawyer and Barbara Walters, whom I’ve always been impressed with because they are incredible pioneers. Also, heads of state such as President Clinton or President Trump, who have their own intuitive nuances that make them incredible leaders. President Obama also had a certain sense of confidence when he spoke about what he wanted and where he was going with things. When you look at the wide group of people I’ve been able to interview, what stands out to me is incredible leadership yet also humility. Having the kind of statute, strength and power that some of these leaders possess but also remembering where you came from with a sense of humbleness is very impressive to me. You also wrote the book Secrets to Success. What are the characteristics you see in successful people and what are their secrets? The book was about the 10 laws of enduring success. When I wrote this book, I was trying to narrow down the answers to this question. What is it that creates leadership, and how do you become a great leader? I think some things I mentioned in that book are things like adaptability. You have to be flexible enough in your life to be able to change and identify areas that are not working and to be
able to adapt to different circumstances. You must recognize humility to understand what you don’t know and to work harder to overcome that area. Resilience, together with all these things, is really important in terms of leadership. Jack Welch was one of my mentors throughout my career at CNBC, and he taught me so much in terms of knowing what I am good at and what I am not good at and what I need to work on. At the end of the day, we are all just humans, we all make mistakes and we need to recognize that no one person is better than the other. It is so important to have that humility to understand you are not the most important person in the world and there are other things and other people in the world that matter a lot more than you. What do you feel was your greatest journalistic achievement in your career? I helped build CNBC, which was very small when I first started, and it is now a global network. I also helped build the Fox business network. I anchored three presidential debates, which I am very proud of, and we had an enormous viewership. The Fox business debate had thirteen million viewers, and the second debate had eleven million viewers. I asked the questions the American people wanted answers for and also presented in a way that was accessible to our viewers while putting the candidates on the spot. While at Fox business, we just beat CNBC, and we have the best guests every morning who are the most informed people in business and politics.
What was the most moving segment you’ve done? I reported on the ground from September 11th, and it was incredibly moving and one of the most important days of my life and always will be. It was also my birthday. I was at the stock exchange and my boss called me and told me to go outside. I was on the street corner when the second plane went into the second building. I ran for my life because the building started to collapse and the whole area shook. There was crazy stuff flying out of the buildings, not to mention people. It was the saddest yet the most incredible moving day for me, and I’ll never forget the comradery. I was outside on the street covered in ashes, and I ran for cover in the exchange. I stayed there that day until 10 pm. When things quieted down, I went upstairs to talk to Richard Grasso, the chairman of the NYSE, and I said, “What now?” The next time I reported on the exchange was the following Monday, the 17th. The people who rang the bell were the first respondersthe firefighters, NYPD, the governor, the mayor, and the senator who were all on the podium. When I interviewed them, I never felt such strength and resilience until that day because we were all in mourning and feeling so hurt, but we also knew we would rise again. We knew we would get through it together, and even though we were beaten down, we would be strong and come back from this. September 17, 2001, was the most inspirational day and one of the most important days of my life and my career.

Have you ever reported on cycles and been completely skeptical? David Faber and I used to have a segment on CNBC, “Annoying Little Comparisons,” of companies that just didn’t make sense. We would pick one a day. For instance, one was that pets.com had a larger market valuation than GM. Pets.com doesn’t sell anything, and it had no revenue last year while GM revenue was over a hundred million dollars. No one cared; you were on the doorstep of a new revolution and viewers just wanted in because they thought

INSIDE COVER
What were some of the economic cycles you’ve experienced throughout your career? I started on the air in 1993, and I have been able to watch the economy cycles over a 30-year period. In 1989, I was a production assistant at CNN Business News. I started as an intern and had a background in economics from NYU. I knew this was a new moment in television when I saw correspondents reporting live on the ground during the Gulf War. At 26, I was watching Bernard Shaw reporting under the bed in Baghdad while bombs were going off, and CNN was the only one reporting live. At that time, all the major networks would wait until 6:30 to report during their evening news. For the first time, I learned how to report on a story as it was actually happening, which brought me incredible intelligence. Many years later, when I became the first person to broadcast on the floor of New York Stock Exchange, I was reporting on a story as it was actually happening. 1993 was the individual investment revolution when individuals thought they could just arm themselves with information and make their own investment decisions, and that stirred a whole new industry. Then we reached the tech boom where people ignored fundamentals with no revenue or earnings, which led to the dot com bust when so many people lost money. After that, there was the crisis in Europe where Europeans were piling on so much debt until things busted, and you saw bankruptcies across Europe. From there, you had this huge housing boom in 2006, betting that housing prices were going to go up without any rationale until they didn’t anymore, which led to this incredible bust and the worst financial crisis in the generation. I’ve covered cycle after cycle of economic changes in the world, and I had a front row seat. It’s been an incredible 25 years, and I am so proud of the work I’ve been able to do.

they were going to get rich overnight. Things don’t make sense but we believe them anyway. So, it’s really important as a viewer to come away from these things and remember the most basic principle of all: when it looks too good to be true, it probably is. Things don’t go on forever when they don’t make sense. What are your outlooks for 2019? I am very positive about where we are right now, and the economy is doing very well. Yes, we are experiencing a little bit of a slowdown, but when you look at the fact that the last jobs number showed 312,000 jobs created, we are talking about several million jobs created just in the last two years. People are feeling better; they’ve got more money in their pockets. The stock market has been reacting to a whole host of different things, and I think people will continue to react to uncertainties. I have great access to the congress and the administration to get firsthand knowledge about new policies, which I am able to communicate to viewers. I think people understand things have changed and new policies will impact them. The uncertainty of not knowing what might happen with the government shutdown, the tax cut plan or health care keeps people frozen and creates a slowdown. Companies sit on cash, investors sit on their money, and consumers don’t go shopping because they are not sure about what’s

next. Europe is a bit of a mess, and China is experiencing a slowdown. I don’t think you want to time the market like a trader. You want to invest for the long-term in something you believe is sound and wise, and you want to invest in growth stories. I think the growth is in the marriage of technology and healthcare. Everyone is living longer as a result of technology and having more knowledge than we had 20 years ago. I remember covering the human genome, and just 20 years ago, we figured out what causes disease, and now we are getting in front of disease and we can change our habits. Now they have mobile stroke units to get to patients in a shorter time and robotic surgeries and cancer screenings. Also, fintech is changing our lives. There are so many areas of growth right now, and that’s something I focus on during my shows each day. I am also focused on how new policy impacts American families and what’s happening in the world over the long-term. Policy plays a large part in growth and investments. What are you expecting to hear at Davos this year? I am looking forward to hearing how trade will affect our relationships in the Eurozone as well as in Asia and about nationalism in the United States and what it has meant to the rest of the world. It’s also interesting to see how the new Brazilian president will affect our relationship with them. There is a
lot to be gained when you have all those policy makers within one place, and I am like the kid in a candy store because I’ve got the best interviews right there, and I can really get a sense of how world policy changes will impact the United States. I am hosting the opening panel, which is about growth and where we are today in terms of markets and the economy, with the Minister of China, Chairman of Bridgewater, and the CEO of Goldman Sachs. You are very into wellness and you work 6 days a week. How do you stay grounded? Where do you like to travel? My husband and I have a home in the Hamptons, and I go there on weekends and bike along the ocean road. I also do yoga, which definitely helps me rest and rejuvenate. Over Christmas, my husband and I went to Marrakesh, and it was amazing. We spent a night in the Sahara Desert, and I rode a camel. Every December/January, we like to go on hiking trips to set the tone of the year in terms of getting in shape and eating healthy. I loved the souk where I bought so many cool Moroccan textiles and caftans. It was an experience, and I am really glad we did it. That sounds incredible. What’s next on the horizon? One my greatest assets is that I have great access to the corporate suite in terms of CEOs as well as

the congressional suite and the administration to get firsthand information about what’s going on. Being able to give this kind of access to our viewers has been a great thing, which is the reason for the show’s popularity. We have the highest income viewers of all cable programming, which is pretty extraordinary. My viewers are informed, educated, with money and are engaged. We cover trade, investing and my number one question is, where is the growth? I’ve also been really active on social media, on Twitter and I love Instagram. I’ve always been a photographer and I have always had my camera since I was a kid, which is also a great way to promote the show and also show aspects of my own life. I am sure the viewers want to see the personal side of you. I think that they do, and I think that’s the good point. My viewers think they know who I am, and I think that’s why the show resonates because they feel like we are friends. I am really a girl’s girl. I always help my assistants get on the air. When I first started on the New York Stock Exchange, there were a lot of people who didn’t want me there, and I had to hold my ground. I think because of that, women relate to me, and that’s why we have a big female viewership.
What do you love most about being a native New Yorker? I grew up in Brooklyn, and I love New York because of its diversity. You can be in the city and be anonymous yet also visit the greatest landmarks on the planet. I am also Italian and my grandfather Carmine Bartiromo came to this country in 1919 during the war. In Italy, he was a bricklayer, and he and his brother built a restaurant in Brooklyn and named it Rex Manor, after a ship that transported people from Italy to America. My first job was in the coat check there, and I watched my entire family work hard to build this business. This is really who I am. I love working hard, and that’s all I know. I am very proud of my upbringing, my Italian heritage, and who my parents are today. My mother is still my best friend. My mother, sister, and I are like three amigos, and we speak every day. What has been the best advice you’ve received, and what has been the best advice you think you’ve bestowed on others? When I talk to people in my industry, young women want to try to follow my footsteps, and I give three pieces of advice. 1. Work hard. There are no shortcuts. It doesn’t matter who you know and who you don’t know. It’s about you and your performance, so work incredibly hard.
You may very well be in the right place at the right time, because it does require a little luck sometimes. 2. Do the right thing. Don’t just try to do the right thing. We all know when we are faced with a dilemma what’s right and what’s wrong. It doesn’t matter what industry you are in. The only thing you have is your reputation. That is it; all you have is your name, and you have to protect it and cherish it. 3. Be who you are, and be true to yourself. In my journey, there have been many people who wanted to be me and do what I do. Sometimes, in this business, there is some jealousy. The mistake they always made when they were trying to be me is not being their own person. You have to love yourself and be who you are, and I think that’s so important to excelling. Make sure you know what you are good at, do what you love, and do what you’re good at. If you love what you do, you won’t mind working hard at it. I love what I do, and after thirty years, I can honestly say I am working the hardest I have ever worked before. Nothing is guaranteed. One of the most important things that people have to recognize is that you have to keep up your end of the bargain. I am grateful for the life that I’ve had as well as the ability to work hard.

BALEENkitchen at the beautiful Sole on the Ocean in Sunny Isles, is the third iteration of the Noble House restaurant brand; a brand known for serving up eclectic menus within impactful interiors inspired by an international sense of adventure. This journey through global cuisines was inspired by its namesake, the Baleen whale, known as the planet’s ever-moving, majestic mi-

BALEENkitchen brings this nomadic lifestyle to the table with a menu that celebrates the flavors of the world and design reflecting the same. Chef Adam Votaw, celebrated for his experience

Guests are invited to get swept away in enchanting interiors and ocean views, via floor-to-ceiling windows and outdoor dining terraces looking upon Sunny Isles’ stretching beaches. With indoor and outdoor oceanfront seating, which is unique to the area, the 4,200-sq. ft. restaurant can seat up to 165 guests and serves as an ideal space for private events. TAO DOWNTOWN Asian Fusion With An Incredible Decor By Peter Blackman

AO Downtown offers a distinct sense of arrival and discovery and is the first TAO venue where guests descend into a multi-level space. Designed by Rockwell Group, the subterranean restaurant, located in the heart of Chelsea, is intended to look and feel as if it has been there for decades and only unearthed recently to reveal the artifacts within. Upon arrival, guests immediately encounter a long corridor with a dragon scale patterned screen and Chinese calligraphy murals mounted on weathered brick walls. The Quan Yin statue, replete with 24 hands, sits atop a koi pond, acting as the anchor of the main dining room. A floor-to-ceiling patterned screen frames the Quan Yin and accentuates the statue’s hands, which represent her ability

Through 3D projection mapping technology which utilizes animation to create visuals such as flowing waterfalls and growing moss, the Quan Yin is brought to life right before your eyes. Specially-crafted banquettes are tucked within the grand staircase, offering prime seating amongst a diverse array of intriguing statues and sculptures sourced abroad. Custom-made, beaded-tassel light fixtures and oversized lantern-like pendants provide warm lighting within the high-ceilinged restaurant. Playing off the aged, vintage aesthetic, UK street artist HUSH, renowned for his artful Eastern images of feminine beauty and sensuality, has hand-painted original mixed media murals throughout the cavernous space.

CELEBRATED PAIRINGS By Mosaka Williamson
A
lthough the holidays may be filled with tinsel, presents and good cheer, they are notoriously stressful. To make your holiday celebration spectacular, you need to put together a perfect wine and food pairing. Wine pairings are often viewed as complex. However, the basics are simple to grasp Here are a few favorites: 1 Wine: Gary Farrell Winery 2015 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley “Gary Farrell helped to put Russian River Valley Pinot Noir on the world stage. Benchmarks of the region, our Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs offer richly textured, elegant expressions of their vineyard sites. These wines nail the sweet spot of the varietal’s broad ripeness spectrum, displaying bright red fruit aromas, vibrant black cherry and berry flavors, and plush sandalwood and Asian spice tones.” Food: Perhaps one of the most versatile red wines to pair with food, Pinot Noir is a well-suited wine to pair with a wide variety of food due to its complexity, refreshing acidity, and rich fruit traits. This wine is fantastic when eating meat, fish, or vegetables 2
Wine: Clos Pegase 2017 Chardonnay, Mitsuko’s Vineyard, Carneros “Clear lemon yellow in the glass. Upfront aromas of peach, melon, cut straw, and bak-

er’s spice. A smooth delivery on the palate displays flavors of stone fruit, cantaloupe, and pears with subtle notes of brioche and toasted coconut. The acid is bright and maintains a pleasant balance in the wine.” Food: Chardonnay’s subtle nature is easily overwhelmed by pungent foods. This wine compliments light and delicate food including cold raw foods, cooked shellfish, steamed or grilled fish, pâtés, spring vegetables, freshly made pasta, and creamy dishes. 3 Wine: Swanson Vineyards, 2015 Merlot, Napa Valley “2015 provided an excellent growing season for our Merlot vines. Naturally low yields from a cool period of weather during fruit set gave us concentrated grapes. Warm to moderate temperatures throughout the year helped preserve acidity whilst rapidly generating sugars.” Food: Intense aromas of plums and oregano lead to violet floral tones and a mouth-filling palate of blackcurrants, tea, and spice. The full-bodied nature of Merlot compliments brined turkey, cranberry sauce, or roasted butternut squash. 4 Wine:
Gehricke Wines 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon, Knights Valley “A fragrant nose of pepper, spice, and blackberry jumps from the glass, inviting a first sip that is rich and complex – the perfect
balance of fruit and spice. This bold wine is ideal for the red wine lover who favors a classic herb-roasted turkey with Italian sausage stuffing and a side of au gratin potatoes. It is an equally good pairing with candied yams, truffled mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts with Balsamic vinegar.” Food: Cabernets pair well with a nice fillet mignon. The buttery texture, tenderness, and absence of fat stands up to high tannins found in Cabernet Sauvignon, making the two a great pair. The meat’s bold flavor matches the big, fruity flavor of the wine. 5 Wine: Mumm Napa Brut Rosé, Napa Valley “Pinot Noir is responsible for the wine’s soft texture and forward fruitiness, while the Chardonnay contributes structure and elegance. A beautiful pink coral color and fresh, vivid aromas of black cherries, red berries and citrus introduce soft red fruit flavors that are rich and mouth-filling. Brut Rosé grapes are harvested by hand during the cool morning hours to ensure they arrive at the winery in pristine condition. Brut Prestige features fine bright citrus, red apple, stone fruit, and creamy vanilla aromas, with hints of toast, honey, and gingerbread spice.” Food: This versatile and balanced sparkling wine is perfect for hors-d’oeuvres, light seafood, poultry, and vegetarian dishes.

Here, the landscape is a flat and arid expanse of bleached-white trees dotted with watering holes, interesting rock formations, and patches of green jungle (depending on the season). It has become the most popular wildlife destination in Sri Lanka because of the high chance of ani-
mal encounters and variety, particularly the elusive Sri Lankan leopard. One of the best ways to maximize your safari experience is to stay at a resort located near the park. Surrounded by virgin wilderness, Chena Huts is one of the premier resorts that rests on this jungle landscape on the boundary of Yala National Park. Just a several minute drive to the entrance gate and you are moments away from a memorable game drive. Feel at one with nature as you drive up to Chena Huts by Uga Escapes where the design and decor are perfectly executed to embrace its surroundings while showcasing the unique location, which combines safari, tropical jungle, and beachfront experiences. This five-star exclusive property has a rustic motif yet it offers ultra-modern comfort and convenience, as well as luxe amenities and top service.
The “huts are in fact luxurious detached, dome-shaped, palm-thatched private cabins that are elevated above ground and linked by boardwalks so nature can move around them. These 14 spaciously arranged huts are spread out amidst seven acres so you will always feel like you have enough privacy. Each hut is climate-controlled, high-tech, and contains a living area, bedroom, en-suite bathroom and shaded outdoor deck with its own private plunge pool from which you can observe the great outdoors from the comfort of your own paradise. If you venture out for a stroll, you may even spot some elephants, wild boars and water buffalo, especially by the watering hole located directly in front of two of the huts. If all the game drives and jungle air have opened up your appetite, the Basses Restaurant situated on the seafront will not disappoint. Taking its name from the nearby reefs and lighthouse, the Basses Restaurant is dec-
orated to an appropriately nautical theme and features fine-dining and delectable dishes. With the emphasis on bespoke and private experiences, guests can dine in their pavilions or have a private table set up under the stars for a truly unforgettable evening. Room rates include all meals and morning and evening game drives to Yala National Park, but for those looking to venture out and explore, guided cultural visits to Katharagama, Kirivehera and Kirinda temples can be arranged. Close to the Udawalawe National Park and the ancient 2000-year-old Buddhist Mulkirigala Rock temple carved into the side of a mountain, there are plenty of attractions to visit in this relatively undeveloped area of Tangalle. While driving in the area, it’s not uncommon to see giant elephants grazing by the side of the road in the nearby national park. Once you visit Tangalle, you will experience a special and tranquil energy that will forever change you and remain with you long after you leave. anantara.com

here’s a special place one can go when needing luxury with a southern flare. The place is Sanderling Resort in Duck, North Carolina. It may possibly be the one luxurious place that manages to find a balance between exclusivity and inclusivity. This is emphasized by how lodging is laid out. after a full day of fun. I stayed at L’Auberge de Sedona, which is only a 90-minute drive from the Phoenix airport, making it very easy to travel to from New York. Once we reached the beautiful town of Sedona, we were at the hotel within minutes, located in the most prime location.
L’Auberge de Sedona, from the moment we drove into the driveway, was a place of pure natural beauty, bliss, and ultimate serenity. The hotel is located on the banks of Oak Creek in the Red Rock region of Sedona. It has 62 luxury cottages, 21 traditional lodge-style guest rooms, and five stand-alone creek houses. My creek house was
L’Apothecary Spa had an extensive menu: Feet in the Creek and Quiet Mind treatments have been designed to relax, balance, connect and awaken the senses. There is also an array of body or facial treatments in a private outdoor cabana or inside the cottage. L’Auberge also offers wellness-focused activities like daily yoga, forest bathing, and full-moon meditation. Additionally, there are morning duck feedings, geology lectures, and stargazing. The hotel truly has special and unique activities for everyone and their passions. L’Auberge de Sedona recently had a multimillion-dollar renewal, completing the resort’s two creek side dining destinations: Cress on Oak Creek and Etch Kitchen & Bar. Creek on Oak Creek was the ultimate luxury dining
experience with tables inches away from Oak Creek. The fine-dining experience consists of an ever-changing prix fixe dinner menu, and you can choose to do a wine pairing with each course. Etch Kitchen & Bar is a great option for a more casual breakfast and lunch option serving phenomenal, fresh food. Overall, L’Auberge de Sedona offers an incredible experience. The hotel is quiet, rustic, and really fit into the Sedona vibe. The grounds are beautiful and well kept, the rooms are serene, the food is delicious, and lastly, the location is perfect. We loved being so close to town and to hiking, and an easy drive from Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, and the Scottsdale/Phoenix Airport. I highly recommend this for your next vacation in the New Year!

These houses were inspired by tranquil Oak Creek, and they are perfect for a romantic getaway. The recently updated guestrooms have king beds and a private patio or balcony while the vista suites and cottages have panoramic views of the Red Rocks. All of the different variations between the cottages and guestrooms make the hotel a perfect fit for couples, friends, or families. Large windows and beautiful terraces let you enjoy the view of the azure waters of the gulf spilling onto white sandy beaches. For ultimate relaxation be sure to visit the luxurious Opal Spa. There are a myriad of treatments to choose from. The signature treatment is suitably called Perfect Massage, and the name says it all. A massage can’t really get much more perfect than at the Opal Spa. The resort also offers several amazing food and dining options. Located with direct access to the beach, the Sandbar is the more casual and lighter option. The views are beautiful and there are live music performances on certain nights.
Chef Todd Holender is leading the culinary team at the fine dining restaurant Sea-Guini. Like the name states already, it is a beautiful merger between the freshest seafood and fine Italian cuisine. The interior and the atmosphere live up to the very high quality of the food along with an extensive cocktail menu. For art lovers, a trip to the Salvador Dali Museum is close to St. Petersburg and is a must see attraction. This incredible art hub amazes with the largest collection of Dali’s work outside of Europe. With all of these things to do and to experience at the Opal Sands resort, this is definitely a gem on this historic and iconic stretch of Florida beach, making it a perfect cultural and culinary weekend getaway for some much needed sun in the dead of winter. opalsands.com

FRIEDA GOLDSTEIN Fights For Immigration Rights By Julie Sagoskin Photographed By duke wiin
W
hen it comes to immigration, Frieda Goldstein fights for her clients as if they are her friends, and in many cases, they become just that – and it’s not hard to see why. She might be a fierce fighter for those seeking asylum and other immigration services, but she is also a family oriented attorney who brings compassion to each of her cases. As the child of immigrant parents with a mother
from Poland and a father from Italy, Frieda was attracted to the field of immigration when she first entered law school. Her passion and persistence paid off, and she worked for an immigration clerk in New York and later on in Miami, while attending school full time. Growing up in Weehawken, New Jersey, just outside of New York City, Frieda the immigration fighter was exposed to various cultures and all the people who make the city what it is. She now has her own clients from all over the
world and said “I meet people from everywhere and learn something new every day!” Once she had found her purpose, Frieda wasted no time putting her talents to good use. She served as a volunteer at American Friends Service Committee, a non-profit in Miami working to help people from Central America with asylum cases. After law school, Frieda was offered a job as a trial attorney and thought that “being a prosecutor would be

beneficial as I would get to work on the other side. I wound up staying a lot longer than I imagined, and worked in both courts as a law clerk and as a trial attorney in New York and Miami.” After 14 years, she left the government and began working with her husband, also a former prosecutor, at his firm, Pozo Goldstein, in the Miami office, and is now the managing partner of the New York office where she brings her passion and patience, both in and out of the courtroom. You could say that immigration law is part of the fabric of the Goldstein family – Frieda and her husband, who met in law school, were married by an immigration judge! Frieda brings her passion from her days as an immigration prosecutor to her current role as an attorney, and said it “keeps her on her toes!” She explained that “people are concerned that there are less options available, but the same immigration laws still stand. While laws have stayed the same, however, policies and stances on DACA and other bills continue to change. I keep my eyes on the news at all times to be up on every possible policy change swinging from one way to another. The current waiting time for a citizenship application is up to two years from the time you file to the time you go into the exam, so that is a longer process than we’ve seen in a while.” Frieda was one of the few selected by United States Attorney General Janet Reno to a Trial Attorney position with the former Immigration and Naturalization Service as part of the Attorney General’s Honors Program. She was also a prosecutor for the Office

can anticipate what the government is expecting or cover it before it becomes an issue. You have to file for asylum within a year of entering a country or else have to prove extraordinary circumstances or a change in country, which is harder to prove. I once had a client who had been in the country for maybe 20 years but could prove he had cognitive issues and he was able to stay.”
Frieda’s favorite and most rewarding cases are asylum cases, which she frequently worked on from the side of a prosecutor. She explained that “if someone comes to the U.S. fleeing from their country, there are five reasons which allow for someone to apply for asylum including race, religion, nationality, particular social group or political opinion. We
As a former immigration prosecutor, Frieda has a distinct edge when it comes to knowing what to expect and explains her role as an immigration attorney as a “natural progression. I work a lot harder and have people calling me 24 hours a day, but it’s so fulfilling. Helping people navigate their needs is the most satisfying for me. Every day is a

challenge but also a chance to help another family.” This efficient and easily accessible attorney explained that “my husband and I both worked on the other side of the law, which definitely gives you the leg up when preparing an application or litigating in court. We can anticipate the questions – we like to ask the court the question before the prosecutor!” From talking clients through encounters with the FBI or receiving calls from someone whose husband is detained at the airport, fighting for those who need her most is what really fires up the fierce Frieda! In addition to helping employers or people applying for their family members, she also represents those with extraordinary abilities, including many ballet dancers. Frieda is more than an attorney,

she’s also an advocate for clients, and gives each and every person personalized service – they know she’s there whenever they call, literally, as she gives out her personal number. It's also important to emphasise that the firm handles any and all immigration matters including, but not limited to, H1B visas, investment and business visas. They also represent employers seeking to hire foreign nationals. One aspect of immigration law that they are most proud, is that the firm provides deportation defense for people who are in remvoal proceedings in immigration court. “We’re trying to uphold the law, but we’re also passionate about what we do,” explained Frieda, who has many clients who have become family friends. “I have a client who applied for a green card for her and her husband but the judge didn’t believe they were married and were denied. I gave them a marriage interview and the case had a great outcome, and now our children are friends. I even
helped a young girl who works in a restaurant in my neighborhood apply for asylum and now she’s petitioning for her parents.” As she is always fighting for her clients, Frieda gets frustrated by those immigration judges who have a 95 percent denial rate. She explained that “these rates, which are publicly posted by a college, are fundamentally unfair. These judges are appointed for life, so when you see one swing one way or another it’s troublesome, especially when some only believe five percent of cases merited asylum. You’d think it would be more along the lines of 50/50. A lot of times we also see people posing as immigration attorneys, meaning they do paperwork without accreditation and therefore apply for what the client isn’t eligible for, resulting in malpractice. It’s really important to specialize in your field, which is why we only focus on immigration.” This devoted and diligent attorney has also had many successful sexual orientation asylums and
marriage based cases recently. She explained that “immigration has done a great job of getting these cases processed more quickly. I even had a transgender client who wanted to petition for her wife – they had been married while he was still a man so had to apply again – and was so proud when we were able to process the case.” When she’s not fighting for her clients - or friends – Frieda enjoys spending time with her family and partaking in all of the cultural experiences the city has to offer, from Ballet to Broadway, which might even include a cast member who has become yet another success story thanks to Frieda. She continues to ensure New York remains the diverse melting pot she is proud to call home! Herman is self-made, starting as a broker on Long Island and later building Prudential into a powerhouse in the region. Once established in the Hamptons, Herman realized that all the competing firms were local. “ We opened in Manhattan, and I was the first company that had an agency that ran from Manhattan to Montauk,” Herman says.

BEAU BAXTER From Los Angeles to New York By Bennett Marcus
B
eau Baxter has had a thriving career as an actor, with roles in 30 Rock, The Deuce, Blue Bloods Murphy Brown, the HBO movie Too Big to Fail, the Broadway play Hand to God, and even an iconic “Got Milk” commercial. He’s had recurring roles on The Drew Carey Show and the Late Show with David Letterman, and starred in the Onion Sports Network web series. Atypical route to acting Baxter came to acting via a somewhat atypical and serendipitous route. After college, he worked in sales, but a film literature class he’d taken had sparked his interest. He spent a couple of years watching critically-acclaimed movies from the 1960s and 70s by legends like Scorsese, Coppola and Lucas. “I was giving myself a little self-taught master’s in film,” says Baxter. “I’d always felt like there was some kind of artist in me, and along the way a little bell went off; I thought maybe acting was my calling.” He surreptitiously signed up for an acting class in his native Atlanta, and that was it. He quit his job, backpacked around Europe for three months, and then packed up and moved to Los Angeles.

“I suppose it was a little crazy,” he says. Some of his friends were skeptical, although his parents weren’t too shocked because he’d always been a ham and a show-off growing up. He spent four years training at the Beverly Hills Playhouse, got an agent, started booking commercials, and eventually got work in TV and film. New York, The Onion New York had always been in his mind. “I just thought it was the most alluring, fascinating, energized place.” In 2006, Baxter had a role in a film shooting in the Big Apple, and after twelve years in L.A., it was the perfect time to make the move. Not long after, he landed a dream job; playing NFL insider Reggie Greengrass on the Onion Sports Network, lampooning ESPN-style overly earnest, hyper-focused sports analysts. “When I read the material, I thought, this is just genius! My dad and I used to make fun of all the super-serious, self-important sports announcers, you know, like they’re talking about peace in the Middle East. It was just so well written, so clever.” The show won a Peabody Award and was adapted for
television by Comedy Central. Baxter’s character was the only one to transcend the jump from the Internet to TV. Daughter Although he came to New York on a lark, it is home now, in no small part due to becoming a father. “I have a beautiful, amazing 11-year-old daughter, and she’s the main reason I stayed here.” When she was born, Baxter was new in the city and still finding his way. “I remember walking around the Upper East Side one night, and I thought, you know what, it’s all going to work out; it has to. I’ve never looked back.” Now, he loves riding his bike around the city, and plays in a darts league at the Gael Pub on the Upper East Side. thegaelpubnyc.com. Baxter has become a Yankees fan, and even bought a 15-game ticket package, to the chagrin of his Southern friends. “They can’t believe it.” imdb.com/beaubaxter

88GLAM The Rise of Hip-Hop’s Hottest New Act By Peter Blackman
C
anadian Hip-Hop Duo, 88Glam are in the middle of their whirlwind 2019 Canadian concert tour that featured twelve performances in an eighteen-day period this January. 88Glam will also be performing on the first day of the 2019 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Founders Derek Wise and 88 Camino debuted the name in November 2017 when they premiered their first music video “12” featuring a cameo from The Weeknd and the first track on their April 2018 album, 88Glam Reloaded. Their Second album, 88Glam2 released in November 2018 by XO Records and Republic Records includes collaboration with Gunna (Track #10 “Racks”) and Nav (Track 6 “It’s a Flex”). Both albums are available on iTunes. Derek Wise began rapping at the age of 10 years old. Listening to an array of musical creatives spanning several genres helped him develop a sound that is natural in every setting; along with his command of rhythm and cadence, this is his greatest gift. Derek’s unstable upbringing and his mother playing the role of both parents taught Derek how to be independent and the ability to rise above any circumstance, which presently is a common theme in much of Derek’s music. His unique perspective is a result of his interests in classic mob movies and taste for culture. 88 Camino began rapping at the age of 17 years old. Listening to an array of musical creatives spanning several genres helped him develop a sound that has a lot of replay value. When 88 Camino was 9 years old, his mother moved away to Tulsa, Oklahoma, for school and brought him with her for a new journey. Eight years later, 88 returned to Toronto, Canada and had a mission to pursue music on a high level. After releasing a ton of previous music numerous years ago, 88 Camino has taken more than a year off to perfect his craft and he is ready for the world to hear his euphoric timeless sound. His unique perspective is a result of his interests in real life observations. Facebook: 88Glam | Instagram: 88glamxo | YouTube: 88Glam | Spotify: 88Glam 88ㅎglam.com

75 KENMARE By w. a. mULLER
I
n the heart of one of New York’s most sought after neighborhoods comes a 38-unit condo comprised of one-to four-bedroom homes ranging in price from approximately $1.7 million to over $12 million designed by Lenny Kravitz’s namesake firm Kravitz Design. Knit into the contextual fabric of NoLita, with its richly textured façade and artful interiors, 75 Kenmare embodies the casual sophistication and celebrated lifestyle of downtown Manhattan. NoLita is a neighborhood consumed with taste and creativity, full of trendy restaurants and shops and apartments inhabited by avid trendsetters, designers, artists and singers. For those who prefer a comfortable relaxed elegance, 75 Kenmare becomes the ideal location for, as Kravitz explains, “People full of life and energy, and of eclectic temperament. People who feel young regardless of age.” Andre Kikoski, renowned architect and winner of the AIA Institute Honor Award for his work at the Guggenheim Museum, is the executive

architect and is leading exterior design of the project. Kikoski’s exterior, comprised of oversize precast concrete panels punctuated by elegantly proportioned wide windows, and presents a strong personality that both blends in and stands out in an historic neighborhood of predominantly brick buildings. The façade’s unique metal window framing and textured vertical panels make it an instant candidate to become one of NoLita’s iconic buildings. And the same happens in the interior, in which Kravitz Design conceived of the interiors as a luxe and layered living space that resulted in a harmonic blend of eccentric downtown vibes and uptown elegance. “Music and design are very similar,” says Lenny Kravitz. “You’re making something out of nothing, building on layers. In the end, you have something that makes you feel differently than before you experienced the space. This should feel natural and comfortable, and be a home that is your refuge, where you build a life and create memories.”
For Kravitz, this project is close to home, where just a block away, on Broome Street, the New Yorker moved into his first loft back in 1988. “Nolita has a style, rhythm and culture all its own, and we’re creating an environment that feels contemporary and refined, but also warm and inviting,” says the rock musician and master designer. The building represents a celebration of classical elements used in innovative ways. Rich materials, including vibrant natural stones, textured metals and rich oak are juxtaposed carefully throughout the building. Kitchens feature custom, matte-white lacquer cabinetry. Bathrooms offer a multisensory experience with walls and floors dressed in Titanium Travertine and French Vanilla marble and Graff satin nickel fixtures. Amenities include a 24-hour concierge, automated parking garage, fully equipped gym, rooftop terrace and private meditation garden. 75ㅏkenmare.com
