NEW YEAR, NEW BEGINNINGS As we say goodbye to 2018 and usher in 2019, we can look at the past as a creative path to all the great things that lie ahead in the coming year. In Chinese astrology, this is the Year of the Pig, which means 2019 is a year of joy, fortune and luck, and it is a good year to make money and invest, as the pig attracts success in all spheres of life. At only 22, our cover star this month is the talented and beautiful rising actress, Violett Beane, who currently stars in the CBS TV series God Friended Me. As a newly-minted New Yorker, Violett is set to take on the town. This month, she discusses her new projects, her upbringing in Austin, and what she loves most about living in the city. With the advent of 2019 comes New Year’s resolutions. At the top of my list is to love more, live life more meaningfully, and of course travel the world to explore new cultures and experiences. As we face the cold bitter Northeast months ahead, we have winter escapes on our mind. In this month’s issue, we travel to the exotic landscapes of Iceland on a Northern Lights Odyssey and to the romantic landscape of Scotland. We also have warm weather on our horizon as we venture to St. Lucia, Miami,
the Carolinas, and the high seas aboard the exciting Celebrity Edge. Our fashion editorial this month is inspired by the polemic starkness of winter with white, wintry days and dark winter nights with a dramatic foray into this season’s hottest monochromatic trend: black and white, day and night. Looking ahead to spring, our beauty pages are inspired by this season’s Pantone Color of the Year: Living Coral, a warm golden hue that reflects hope and life and the light at the end of the tunnel to signify the end of winter. As January is a month of nesting, we cover some of our favorite NYC dining destinations, from chic rooftop winter wonderlands to cozy comfort food institutions that are a perfect hideaway for a cold snowy night. As we look ahead to 2019, there are so many things to look forward to in the coming year. We live in one of the greatest cities on the planet, where the world truly is our oyster. Follow me on my adventures @hillarylatos

Skin Care in the Winter
European Wax Center National Brand Ambassador
By Melanie Coba
Keep Waxing
Waxing on a regular schedule (every 3 to 4 weeks) will not only reveal beautiful, smooth skin, it will also provide a mechanical exfoliation, removing not just your hair, but dead skin as well. This means keep up a consistent waxing schedule in the winter, even if your skin may not see the light of day. Your skin needs to be waxed more than ever to help keep it refreshed throughout the wintertime.
Start Waxing Your Legs (And Your Arms) I’m often asked, “If you could only wax one area for the rest of your life, what would it be?” You’d think I’d say bikini or underarms because that’s what I am always encouㅁraging people to try, but the truth is legs. My legs are half of my body and waxing leaves them feeling smooth and silky. I couldn’t go the rest of my life without enjoying that super fresh post- leg- wax feeling, especially in the winter. (Add your arms to that and you’ve covered most of your body.) Winter is a great time to start waxing your legs, if you don’t normally do it, because growing out your hair isn’t as apparent.
Exfoliate Between wax visits, it is essential to exfoliate regularly at home. You can gently exfoliate everyday using a physical exfoliant like the European Wax Center Strut Lavishly Body Polish. The polish uses tiny beads of wax to gently remove lifeless surface cells that can contribute to ingrown hairs. Every few days you can use something with a little more kick like European Wax Center Reveal Me Body Exfoliating Gel. It is an enzymatic exfoliant that will lift and remove dead skin cells revealing the softer smoother skin left behind.
Moisturize I can’t stress this enough- moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Make a habit of moisturizing as often as you can. I recommend getting one or two scented lotions. For example, European Wax Center Strut Lavishly Body Lotion or Slow It Body Lotion. Keep different lotions in different places in your home. For example, one by the couch, one by your bed, and one in the kitchen. That way they are always available and you have a variety of options all winter long.
Enjoy Caring for Your Skin Creating small rituals like placing lotions around the house make it easy and enjoyable to care for your skin. Self care in this way helps to make it easy to feel good. Not only will it keep your skin beautiful, but it will also make you feel unapologetically confident. So, embrace those few little moments a day when you are caring for your skin and take the time to take a deep breath or think about something you appreciate in your life. 22 | resident.com

THERA INC.
Taking Therapy to a New World... By Erin Bogdanski & Amit Jain Founders of THERA Inc.
A
re you the caregiver of a child or teenager who is suffering from a mental illness? Have you ever experienced putting your child through the medical system and found that they come out over medicated, lacking access to immediate therapy and at the same time having to pay out huge fees in insurance? Consider the new wave of virtual reality therapy. THERA Inc. provides live counseling using virtual reality using customizable avatars. THERA is for children and teens who are in distress and need to talk to someone and go to a “ safe” place. Different from other online counseling services, THERA is fully immersive offering a mind/body experience which provides real time counseling without having to go to harsh medications.
24 | resident.com
How does it work? THERA provides VR spaces for therapists to conduct “ talk therapy” with kids and teens. Signing up on your mobile or desktop is the first step. THERA will then create an online intake including a unique filter system to match you with the appropriate provider. A 50 minute session of counseling is delivered with a licensed therapist. THERA is still growing and is designed for at risk youth who are struggling with depression, isolation, self harming and isolation. Using the VR technology High Fidelity, THERA takes a client to meet with their therapist in avatar form with the option of customizing their therapist creating a level of comfort based on the client’s preference. Teenage suicide and self harming are on the rise more than ever due to our poor resources, societal pressures and lack of support in the traditional medical model. THERA is an adjunct to the private practice to support therapists by
improving their client retention with youngsters and is a tool to provide preventive tools to teens who are struggling with mental health issues. Why not see a real person? Virtual based counseling platforms have proven to have a higher retention rate with youngsters based on their comfort and knowledge of using technology. Several virtual reality therapies have proven to have a 90% efficacy rate when used for exposure therapy. Our hypothesis is this can be translated into the traditional delivery of care. THERA is expanding and in future will service not just youngsters but adult populations. We are inspired by the leaders in psychology and virtual reality. THERA is taking therapy to a new world. theravr.io

W
hat exactly is StemCell Therapy and what can be treated by it? In order to understand what Stem cell therapy is, first and foremost we must understand what a stem cell is and what it is meant to do. A stem cell has the remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types in the body during its life and growth. In addition, in many tissues they serve as a sort of internal repair system, dividing essentially without limit to replenish other cells as long as the person is still alive. When a stem cell
divides, each new cell has the potential either to remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a more specialized function, such as a muscle cell, a red blood cell, a brain cell, hepatocyte, ect... These cells are distinguished from other cell types by two important characteristics. First, they are unspecialized cells capable of renewing themselves through cell division, sometimes after long periods of inactivity, which we currently utilize via adipose tissue (fat cells) or through the bone
marrow. Second, under certain physiologic or experimental conditions, they can be induced to become tissue- or organ-specific cells with special functions. In some organs, such as the gut and bone marrow, stem cells regularly divide to repair and replace worn out or damaged tissues. In other organs, however, such as the pancreas and the heart, stem cells only divide under special conditions. Although commonly used and accepted, the term “adult stem cells is a little misleading, since these
cells are found in infants and children as well as in adults. Adult stem cells produce the different kinds of cells that maintain the body’s tissues and organs, and, importantly, they have the ability to divide and reproduce indefinitely. These cells typically produce the type of tissue in which they are found. Various types of adult stem cells have been identified in many organs and tissues. They range from cells that are able to form many different kinds of tissues to more specialized cells that form just some of the cells of a particular tissue or organ. Often confused with adult stem cell, progenitor cells are early descendants of stem cells that can differentiate to form one or more kinds of cells, but cannot divide and reproduce indefinitely. Some tissues and organs have more adult stem cells than others. Those organs with fewer or no stem cells (the heart, for example) don’t readily regenerate when they are injured or diseased. Scientists around the world are actively studying ways to isolate different kinds of adult stem cells, to control and expand the rate at which they make copies of themselves, and to learn how to direct them to form the specific cell types needed for treatment. Adult stem cells have been identified in many organs and tissues, including brain, bone marrow, peripheral blood, blood vessels, skeletal muscle, skin, teeth, heart, gut, liver, ovarian epithelium, and testis. They are thought to reside in a specific area of each tissue (called a “stem cell niche”). In many tissues, current evidence suggests that some types of stem cells are pericytes, cells that compose the outermost layer of small blood vessels. Stem cells may remain quiescent (non-dividing) for long periods of time until they are activated by a normal need for more cells to maintain tissues, or by disease or tissue injury. What is the process cultivating the StemCells? Adult stem cells can be isolated from the body in different ways, depending on the tissue. Blood stem cells, for example, can be taken from a donor’s bone marrow, from blood in the umbilical cord when a baby is born, or from a person’s circulating blood. Mesenchymal stem cells, which can make bone, cartilage, fat, fibrous connective tissue, and cells that support the formation of blood can also be isolated from bone marrow. Neural stem cells (which form the brain’s three major cell types) have been isolated from the brain and spinal cord. Many research groups have reported that certain kinds of adult stem cells can transform, or differentiate, into apparently unrelated cell types (such as brain stem cells that differentiate into blood cells or blood-
forming cells that differentiate into cardiac muscle cells). And depending on the patient it could be uncomfortable. Can StemCell Therapy help with fertility? If so how? Women with premature ovarian insufficiency may be able to use their own adult stem cells to rejuvenate their ovaries and avoid the effects of premature menopause, new research suggests. According to the research and clinical trials done in the united states women who had POI and low estrogen were shown to have increased levels of as soon as 3 months after the injection of stem cells, and the effect lasted for at least one year. Their menopausal symptoms had been alleviated, and six months after the injection of the stem cells into the ovaries, they had resumed menses. Also the ultrasound imaging of treated ovaries showed significant size increase in the treated ovaries compared to the contralateral untreated ovaries. In the cases completed so far, the patients tolerated the treatment very well with no complications or side effects. So is there hope with stemcells and fertility… The answer is Yes. There is much research needed in the area but it definitely looks promising and very exciting to us all in the field especially for women who are trying to get pregnant or decrease the menopausal symptoms. Can StemCell Therapy help with erectile dysfunction? If so how? Early results of a clinical trial suggest that stem cell therapy may be a promising treatment for erectile dysfunction, after the procedure was found to restore sexual function in men with the condition. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a condition whereby a man has difficulties getting or maintaining an erection in order to engage in sexual intercourse. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive Kidney Diseases, around 12 percent of men under the age of 60, and 22 percent of men aged between 60 and 69, have ED. High blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, chronic kidney disease, and prostate surgery are some of the physical conditions that can cause ED. Psychological issues - such as anxiety, stress, depression, and low self-esteem - can also contribute to ED. Current treatments for ED include PDE5 inhibitors (such as Viagra), penile implants, and injections. However, most physicians and scientist note that all of these therapies can have significant side effects. For the stem cell procedure, abdominal fat cells were extracted from each man through liposuction. Stem cells were then isolated from the fat cells and injected into the corpus cavernosum of the penis - the spongy tissue that normally becomes filled with blood during an erection. Many of our
patients have had very successful outcomes and no longer need to be on Viagra or Cialis and can have spontaneous erections. We’ve even had a few spouse call us to reverse the outcome that we had accomplished. Are there any risks to getting StemCell Therapy? Adult stem cells, and tissues derived from them, are currently believed less likely to initiate rejection after transplantation. This is because a patient’s own cells could be expanded in culture, coaxed into assuming a specific cell type (differentiation), and then reintroduced into the patient. The use of adult stem cells and tissues derived from the patient’s own adult stem cells would mean that the cells are less likely to be rejected by the immune system. This represents a significant advantage, as immune rejection can be circumvented only by continuous administration of immunosuppressive drugs, and the drugs themselves may cause deleterious side effects. These methods treat the manifestations of ED, offering symptomatic relief but it remains through research to be certain the therapy can result in a permanent cure for the underlying disease process. The pressing need to develop a curative treatment for ED has stimulated interest in utilizing stem-cell therapy in ED patients. Is StemCell Therapy expensive? Well define expensive. Let’s take erectile dysfunction for instance. The average ED patients will want to have sex more than 6 times a month. The reason I say 6 times a month is because most insurance companies as well as Medicare will only cover 6 pills a month for a small price of approximately $50/pill. If you don’t have insurance it will cost you close to $95/pill. If you wanted to get a full bottle of Cialis 20mg tablets that would run you approximately $2200/bottle a month for 30 pills. That’s approximately $26,000 a year for the rest of your life for a tiny little blue or yellow “Sex Pill.” And yes there are people that spend that kind of money for an erection. However, you could save yourself A LOT OF MONEY by doing stem cell therapy because depending on the disease that is being treated it can range anywhere between $7k to $25K depending on the amount of extraction that needs to done and that is usually for 5-10 years. God Friended Me is so different from other shows you’ve been a part of, what attracted you most to this project? I was auditioning multiple times a day this past pilot season and this was one of the only scripts that made me feel happy after reading it, like, I felt very uplifted and that there is humanity in this world, and I think in the world that we’re in right now we need a show like that and I think I was feeling that during pilot season. Is this going to affect your future roles going forward? When you’re first starting out as an actor or any industry, you don’t get a choice, you want to work so you work on things that come and you do what you have to do, but working on this has made me realize that I want to be part of something that is making a difference or is talking about something people aren’t talking about. In God Friended Me we talk about faith, we talk about family drama and things that are happening in people’s lives. What I’ve noticed so far is that people are reaching out and saying their lives have changed since just watching
the show and they have a little bit more understanding about the people around them or their family and friends. Do you think we’re going to start seeing more of a trend of shows that people can relate to? I love watching shows about murder and dark comedies but I think there’s sort of a change happening in television and movies where people want to feel good because there’s so much going on in the real world. If you can just escape for one hour on a Sunday night maybe it can just make everyone feel a little bit better. Were you surprised by the success of the show thus far? We’ve done a few press junkets for it and the viewing has been amazing and the numbers blew all of our minds. The day after we premiered for our season the crew was so happy and the vibe on set was amazing cause we got eleven million views and it’s not that we weren’t expecting it, it’s just that you never know, and all the feedback we’ve been receiving has been pretty positive.
How are your co-stars? Do you hang out with them? Everyone is so great. We recently went to dinner and then we were walking to get cookies and there was this random dance party in Washington Square Park…and that’s New York. (In case you were wondering, it was Insomnia Cookies!) Will we see you as a superhero again anytime soon? They just started airing the fifth season of FLASH and I know the creators mentioned they’re bringing back some of the Speedsters from previous seasons. I’ve loved playing Jesse and putting on a leather suit, the set was a lot of fun so I’d love to go back. When did you first get into the biz? The Leftovers for HBO which was shot in my hometown of Austin, Texas was one of the first major things that I did and it was such as fun experience cause I didn’t know anything about set or how to find my mark. Every project I’ve done I’ve learned so much more and grown, it’s been so great.

How would you describe your signature style? I mostly always have something vintage in my outfit like jeans or shoes or a purse or something - and comfortability – like you’ll find me in jeans and sneakers and a sweater and popcorn socks. Any cool places you’ve discovered in New York? I love Park Slope and Clinton Hill, whenever my boyfriend and I wanna get dinner we go over to that area. There are so many cute restaurants and what I’ve found is pretty much any restaurant you go to is gonna be good cause the rents are so high. Oh, the pizza near us, Not Rays is our favorite. Being back in the theatre world has also been amazing, we saw Girls &Boys with Carey Mulligan and it was so, so fantastic. It’s so exciting, there’s always something going on. Have you ever done stage productions? That’s how I started in high school. I was pretty much in every play and then in between my junior and senior year we got a new coach who didn’t like me for some reason and he stopped casting me and I was missing that aspect of my life. I found an agent in Austin and got parts for TV. Now that I’m here I’m itching to do theatre again.

Any new upcoming projects? I am going to be filming something this summer which is very exciting, and I think fans of mine will be excited for it, I don’t know if anyone’s expecting it. And we just found out that we got a full order, the back half of our season for God Friended Me. Where have you been traveling lately for pleasure? Most recently I went to Iceland. It was so cool. My boyfriend and I rented a car in Reykjavik and drove down the South Coast and stopped at every place, pulling over every five minutes and I’m going to Tulum for Christmas. You often use your voice to help animal related causes, is this something you’ve always been passionate about? I’ve always loved animals and I grew up surrounded by them: cats, dogs, bunnies, chickens and it definitely played a part in my decision to go plant-based. Not to mention all of the environmental impacts raising animals for meat has. I recently did a PETA campaign for their “All Animals Have The Same Parts” where you see different parts of my body labeled like they would be if I was a pig raised for slaughter. The campaign is essentially saying that whether it’s a pig, cow, dog, or human, we all have the same parts and all deserve the same amount of respect. Who are you wearing most these days? My go-to designers right now that I love are Alice + Olivia, Opening Ceremony, and Monse. What restaurants are next on your list? Dirt Candy - it’s vegan and I’m plant based and I’ve heard that place it so good, but I swear every weekend that place is so booked up.

JOHN MEADOW The Sweet Life of John Meadow By HILLARY LATOS Photographed By Evan Guttman of EvanWasHere Photography Groomer│Nyla Aldridge for Angelo David S ㄴ alon
A
s one of New York City’s leading restaurateurs, John Meadow is the founder and president of LDV Hospitality. At the heart of LDV Hospitality is the hot-spot Scarpetta, which has grown from its original Meatpacking District location to six different outposts with 20 different restaurants and bars in different cities, with even more planned worldwide. Resident Magazine speaks to John Meadow about his plans for growth, his secrets for success, and his famous spaghetti pomodoro, which put Scarpetta on the map. How did you start LDV? LDV was formed in 2008 with the first Scarpetta location in the Meatpacking District. It stands for La Dolce Vita in Italian because for me, it is about an everyday charming sweet life. This is the thread that represents our passion and goal in our restaurants whether it’s Dolce, Corso Coffee, Seville or Scarpetta. It’s about bringing the sweet life and old hospitality to our guests. How did you get started in the hospitality industry? I always wanted to be in this industry. I had dreams of grandeur to own the Plaza Hotel. I went to Cornell University for graduate school and later worked at the Plaza for 2 years and realized that my passion was to create and tap into my entrepreneurial spirit. In 2004, I was 24 and opened my first bar by Madison Square Garden. It was a success; later, I took a lease in the Meatpacking District, which was an utter failure. We gave it one more shot and named it Scarpetta; it won the James Beard Foundation Best Restaurant in the country
and received three stars from the New York Times. We have since grown to open in the Fontainebleau in Miami and in the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. What is your secret to success? It’s two parts: trying really hard and not being afraid of taking your shots and also having a good team around you. We’ve had plenty of failures, but we keep going. Our lease was up on 14th Street, so we had to move the restaurant, which was the scariest and most intimidating thing in my career. But quite frankly, it’s been the best opening of my career. You have to push and take your chances. You can’t just say the city of New York is too expensive; it does no good. Go forward, push, motivate and cultivate a good group around you. We employ nearly 125 people and they make Scarpetta. I had a fundamental role in it, but on a day-to-day basis, it’s that wonderful group that makes the experience special. How do you choose your locations? Historically, I’ve been rather reckless. I’m a deal junkie, and that’s why I’ve done so many deals. I’m still a romantic, and I always get excited to open a new location. We’ve grown to eight different cities. At this juncture, I’ve learned that less is more, so I choose projects of the appropriate scale and scope, while identifying our core consumer. Fish where your fish are; don’t go out of your realm. We’ve built so many things outside of our core, and I’ve learned that grinds on your business. The proximity to home is very meaningful. Do you prefer to be in hotels?
Our six Scarpetta locations are in hotels. Our business as a company is in hotels. I always wanted to be in the hotel business, and part of the compelling reason to be in hotels was for the restaurants to be in the public social form. I always saw the romance in that. Our intent has always been to be in hotel F&B and to play a critical role in bringing the hotel asset to life. The restaurant is where the local community comes and engages. We’re very fortunate that we’ve been able to find that authentic restaurant space to make the pivot into the hotel space. What do you love most about being in NYC? New York has a wonderful mix of people. It’s an eclectic frenetic energy. It’s exciting and every day is different. It’s like humanity amplified. There’s no other city our headquarters would be in. We grew outside of NY for a reason, and we’re very proud of those restaurants and the team members who make up those restaurants. NY is home, and having restaurants here is far more meaningful than business. What about the lounge/ nightclub concept? We’ve had other lounges and nightclubs. We did the Cannes Film Festival and we’ve done nightlife. Seville was the first nightlife concept we did on our own terms. We’re restaurant people and approached it from the concept of a restaurant to give it an authentic experience with live music that opens daily. We don’t just sell aspirational exclusivity. Seville has a sexy indulgent nightlife feel to it that is socially dynamic and active at the same time. There’s a wonderful synergy about having dinner upstairs and later going to Seville.

dining What is your signature dish? It’s always been spaghetti pomodoro basil. Scarpetta is derived from the phrase fare di scarpetta, which means “little shoe” but references a homey gesture. To make scarpetta at home, you break off the end of the bread, dip it in grandma’s sauce and eat it. Nothing could be more domestic. The reason why we named it Scarpetta was that it represented that oxymoron between the high and low balance between something totally comfortable and casual yet in a high-end, aspirational setting with warmth in a formal setting. No dish better exemplifies this simple elegance other than this basic classic spaghetti dish. It’s about very simple ingredients coming together in an elegant fashion. Everything in that dish is handmade. What are your next projects? We have five exciting hotel projects in our pipeline. One of them is in London, and all are in A+ markets. Where do you like to go out in NYC? I live in the Upper West Side, which is my cocoon, and on the weekends, I try not to leave. I’m right next to the park and live in the building my wife grew up in, so my in-laws are downstairs. My father grew up two blocks away, so it’s a very nice, close-knit feel. We also have a home in Southampton. My greatest passion is our London project, so I’m there once a week, and then its only two hours to Florence, so I go there for dinner and come back. I love the proximity to so much in Europe. One of my greatest thrills is to book a 24-hour whirlwind tour to Europe so I can see my friends there and find the right restaurants. I’m an avid traveler. How did you partner with Domingo Zapata for the mural that adorns Seville? Domingo has always been a friend. I love his art, but his persona and energy make him such a beautiful, vibrant person. When the building was originally constructed, it was known as Hotel Seville. We wanted to go back to the New York Art Deco roots. With the idea of Seville as a Spanish city and Domingo being a Spaniard, we felt no one spoke to classic Spain in NYC better than Domingo. He’s a sensational artist, and we commissioned him to create the mural depicting his version of Picasso’s Guernica. It has a wonderful balance of an eclectic yet gritty and technically valid feel. For us, it’s important that LDV doesn’t just exist for a super high-end aspirational audience; there are moments of it, but it’s all about the high-low balance. Our mantra is to engage in the LDV lifestyle every day, all day long, and Domingo definitely gets that. It’s important to work with like-minded people because this is all about passion. If you don’t have that, none of this makes sense. I’m grateful for the last 10 years of wins and failures, but I realize all of it was training to get to this new chapter, and this new building marks the second chapter of Scarpetta. What we’re doing here in Nomad is so dynamic and located in the center of the new New York, so it’s a great iconography of New York. This new amplified Scarpetta 2.0 paired with the nightlife downstairs in this sprawling space with one of the biggest hotel developers is a massive step forward. This is just the beginning of the rest of our career. The beauty of New York is that you have Wall Street, models, celebrities, politicians and construction guys. There’s a crazy robust mix that very sadly has been changing. As the city becomes more homogenous, it’s lost a bit of its dynamics. New York has to maintain that high-low grit and character to appreciate the mix. We get everyone; it is a beautiful, simmering pot of humanity, and it’s what makes a restaurant special. It’s pasta and sizzle. ldvhospitality.com

MAMO RESTAURANT The Return of Italian and Provençal Dining in SoHo By Peter Elston
M
AMO Restaurant, one of New York City’s leading Italian restaurants, is making a comeback. The renowned SoHo restaurant celebrates the flavors and sensibilities of Italian cuisine and brings those to New York City. It is reopening after a fire closed its doors this past Summer 2018. While the unfortunate event could signal the end of many dining establishments or a departure to a new location, the team at MAMO, headed by Italian restaurateur Mike “Mamo” Mammoliti and Executive Chef Salvatore Marcello, remained firm in the belief that the 323 W. Broadway location, its ambience, and the style of cuisine were a winning combination unrivaled by many. A renewed energy enlivens the fine dining destination as loyal patrons and supporters celebrate the miracle at MAMO Restaurant. Restaurant owner Mike Mammoliti humbly shares, “It was our clientele and VIP guests that really gave us the strength, after suffering from the fire, to rebuild and keep the formula the same - great ambience, excellent service, outstanding cuisine from Italy, and to resist changing the vibe that our custom-

ers love which brought us this far in our journey.” After the brief hiatus, flavorful Mediterranean preparations are underway as Executive Chef Salvatore Marcello excitedly awaits new guests and loyal patrons, alike, to experience the renewed MAMO restaurant. Making a comeback are the MAMO classics, a host of prix fixe offerings and the signature cuisine that have guests clamoring for reservations to the heavily frequented SoHo restaurant. Authentic and delicious, a host of menu items include the Romanesco Arrosto, Salsa Caesar, e Parmigiano is roasted half Romanesco cauliflower, served with a creamy homemade Caesar. The carefully prepared Insalata Di Polpo E Ceci is a fresh blend of octopus, chickpeas, cherry tomatoes, lemon and pickled cherry peppers. Famous for their delicious pasta, MAMO restaurant’s hearty dishes include the Maccheroncini al ferretto (fresh calabrian maccheroni, butter, sage, lemon and parmigiano), Maltagliati Verdi Alla Boscaiola (housemade green maltagliati, mushrooms, peas, creamy tomato, parmigiano) or the diner’s choice of
Risotto or Ravioli with Al Tartufo (Fresh Truffle). Toast to MAMO Restaurant’s new chapter, enjoying an impressive cocktail menu, in addition to, an extensive wine list of carefully selected French and Italian wines to complement the cuisine. Bringing back the affectionate Italian fare and charming hospitability, MAMO offers diners traditional cuisine in an intimate yet elegant setting. The bi-level restaurant includes a casual dining room on the ground floor and a formal dining space upstairs. With damage completely undetectable, both spaces continue to capture the Riviera’s “sense of home” with original family photos and oversized vintage movie posters hung upon the restaurant walls. Since opening in May of 2015, VIP patrons who have dined MAMO for the delicious fare but stayed for the intimate dining experience include Nick, Joe and Kevin Jonas, Rihanna, Beyoncé and Jay-Z. 323 W Bdwy. ICELAND The Land of Fire and Ice By Hillary Latos

Millions of years ago, molten lava from the earth’s core clashed with walls of glacial ice to create waterfalls, craters, lava fields, hot springs and a unique landscape not found anywhere else in the world. This wonderland can be reached in just five hours from JFK through Icelandair, which also allows for a free stopover in Reykjavik to any connecting transatlantic flights to Europe, making it easier than ever to visit this land of enchantment. uring winter, many people want to escape from the cold to warmer climates, which I have to admit, I used to do as well. But this year, I was interested in exploring a polar-opposite destination : ICELAND, a place where fire and ice co-exist. There is so much to learn and explore in Iceland that you must plan your itinerary in advance to make sure you make the best of this unique destination.

GLENAPP CASTLE Live Like Scottish Royalty By Hillary Latos

repare to be whisked back in time to the bygone era of aristocratic elegance and grandeur at the Glenapp Castle, a five-star Relais and Chateaux castle hotel located in Ayrshire, Scotland. Steeped in history and romance, Glenapp Castle is a perfectly preserved time capsule, representing a refined style of living from yesteryear with meticulous attention to detail from the elegant Victorian furnishings and restored interiors to the breathtaking gardens and landscapes. Built in 1870, Glenapp Castle reflects the
68 | resident.com
nineteenth century baronial style of Scottish architecture with its regal turrets, towers and crenellations, where each room is inspired by its former inhabitants with period art, antiques and elegant paneled walls. Inside the dining room, you can view all the way to the famed Ailsa Craig, the Isle of Arran, Holy Island and the hills of Northern Ireland. The rarified Scottish history is exemplified within its walls. The original owner was the Earl of Orkney who later sold Glenapp to industrialist James Hunter who commissioned David Byrne, a celebrated Edinburgh architect, to create a grand fairytale estate that featured
the most prominent elements of Gothic and Renaissance design. The castle later passed hands to businessman James Lyle Mackay who was the first earl of Inchcape. His spirited and headstrong daughter Elsie had a personality larger than life; she also lived at the castle until her untimely death from an attempt to cross West to East by airplane. But it is still rumored that her spirit wanders the halls of Glenapp where she is especially fond of her former abode: the Countess of Inchcape premium suite. Every luxuriously appointed suite reflects a
different décor, view and layout replete with Victorian antique furnishings and opulent bathrooms. The grandest rooms are on the second floor with glorious sea views and fireplaces where you will feel like royalty as you welcome each morning. Other suites on the second floor face the gardens, entrance and courtyard with spacious living areas. Rooms on the first floor have a cozy and homey feel with beautiful garden views across the estate. The most palatial accommodation is the Earl of Inchcape suite, which features a sumptuous living area, a four-poster bed, and views across the sea and gardens. Dine on award-winning Scottish specialties in the regal and formal dining room that overlooks Ailsa Craig and the Scottish coastline. To truly appreciate the fine Scottish regional cuisine, including haggis, choose the 6-course tasting menu. For lighter fare, the “Taste of Glenapp” offers highlights of their delicious gastronomy.
Enjoy countryside living with 36 acres of grounds to explore. Become one with nature as you walk through the verdant canopied forest comprised of majestic redwoods and a bubbling stream. Stroll through the walled garden and down to the historical Italian garden surrounding a picturesque pond that has been lovingly restored to its original glory by renowned garden designer Gertrude Jekyll. Take an afternoon break to enjoy high tea in the charming tea room within the walled garden or the newly-restored Victorian 150-foot glass house surrounded by lush vegetation. The majestic grounds of the castle are also a breathtaking backdrop to partake in rarified activities of yesteryear. Try your hand at falconry in the front lawn of the castle as these magnificent birds of prey soar high above the castle or the wooded forest before swooping down on your leather-clad hand. These highly-trained raptors range from sweet doe-eyed owls to tenpound eagles including a dramatic fish eagle that will dive into the pond for a tasty meal.
Other activities onsite include an archery competition in the woods or dark-sky stargazing from the walled garden, where you may even spot a Northern Lights shower. For a truly unique experience, sail out to the magnificent and uninhabited Ailsa Craig, which soars 1100 feet above sea level, and enjoy an idyllic catered picnic by the lighthouse to experience the Scottish countryside coastline with exquisite bird watching. Pending availability, Glenapp can also arrange a private tour and tasting at the Hendricks Gin distillery as you learn about the extensive process of creating unique flavors from their master distiller. A visit to Glenapp Castle is more than just a vacation; it’s a truly magical opportunity to step away from daily life and to experience a fairytale existence where the reality will exceed your wildest dreams. glenappcastle.com

The Quiet Side of Florida DISCOVER USEPPA ISLAND Southwest Florida's Paradise Coast provides a stark contrast to the I-95 corridor and high rise beach development of some of the more populated areas of Florida's east coast. Just imagine, 25-miles of pristine barrier islands, from Sanibel north to Boca Grande, with a 3-story height limit, and an ecosystem largely preserved as it was 100 years ago. Now, imagine forever views of sea, sky and foliage, to the north and south along Pine Island Sound. A protected area where future development will be so limited that new rooftops will be rare. The Pine Island and Charlotte Harbor Aquatic Preserve nurture a rich habitat, as a fishery and home to numerous water mammal and avian species. Separated from the Gulf of Mexico by the sparkling strand of Captiva, Sanibel, Cayo Costa and Gasparilla Islands, this locale is the home of Useppa Island, a unique and unpretentious Old Florida style village with historic roots. Accessible only by water or air, there are no cars and no trac lights. This hidden gem is lush and tropical, with 300-year- old Live Oaks, Mahogany trees, colorful flora and fauna. Useppa's protected location sits 40 feet above sea level and provides an unparalleled sanctuary. Caressed by Gulf breezes and the embrace of undeveloped preservation lands and waters, Useppa is a true private island and club, where residents and members enjoy boating, water recreation and exploring.
Club amenities include tennis, bocce and croquet courts, a fitness center, dining and a marina that can accommodate up to a 100-foot watercraft. Useppa attracts residents from around the country. Longing for a quiet location to enjoy the treasures of nature, many Floridians have discovered this hidden gem, along with those from as far away as Canada. Most homes, that dot the island, were built at the water's edge, many with private docks. Waterfront attached townhomes start in the low $400s and single-family homes range from $1M to over $2M. The Useppa People, Brian and Mary McColgan, Useppa Realtors with Premier Sotheby’s International Realty, and residents for over 30 years, determined the Secret of Useppa was far too well kept. For the last six years, they have worked to share their love for the Island Life, welcoming each potential buyer as a future neighbor. With a sense of adventure and a longing for simpler times, no trac, no high rises and no crowds, Make Your Escape to Useppa Island. Minutes to Florida's mainland, but world's away from the hustle and bustle of mainland living.

GUY STANLEY PHILOCHE Rocks New York's Art World By Julie L. Sagoskin Photographed By UDO SPREITZENBARTH
A
rtist Guy Philoche wants to bring color to your walls – and to your life! This Haitian-born artist, whose work is inspired by the vibrant shades of his Caribbean background, also brings about feelings of nostalgia, but with a New York twist, with every brushstroke! This cutting-edge creative is a pro at painting pictures that evoke childhood sentiments – only your childhood didn’t look this cool or edgy! For his Game series, this artsy artist painted old classic board games such as Checkers and Monopoly and made them look well-played and vintage; plus, he made a sculpture for each playing piece. It’s no wonder they became such a huge hit! He might be an
ahead-of-his-time artist, but Philoche was also inspired by those earlier times growing up “when we took the phone off the hook on Sunday night and had game night and ate dinner together as a family and talked about our day.” Philoche, an ingenious innovator who attended art school at Yale, had already painted an image in his mind of what he wanted to become in the third grade upon taking a class trip to a museum where he was exposed to the masters as well as to contemporary artists. While he was lucky enough to know what he wanted to do at a young age, Philoche’s passion also plagued him.
“Imagine being so young and focused and all you care about is making art and being in the MoMA, like a racehorse with blinders. You have to make a lot of sacrifices.” Philoche’s collectors are very glad he found his creative calling, and his paintings now hang in private homes as well as corporate collections. This passionate painter who thinks outside the box – or the canvas - brings about beauty with every stroke of his brush. His images make you see and feel things beyond what’s in front of you. Philoche says, “I’m very grateful that my collectors and dealers allow me to grow as an artist. Artists get stuck painting the same thing because it sells, but I’ve

been allowed to evolve and take things to a different level and to try new things. They’ve really believed in me and in my vision, and they have given me the freedom to experiment throughout my career.” This pioneering painter is always pushing the envelope, and he has garnered many comments from his No Comment series, which some galleries deemed too edgy and controversial at the time. Fast forward eight years later, and with the birth of the Me Too movement, these artworks are now being praised for what they always were: beautiful and powerful pieces that were ahead of their time. “It’s funny that I made these years ago, and they’re basically women with high-profile jobs who can’t get ahead because of that boys club thing, and no one wanted to touch it; it featured nudes and mouths covered. Those same galleries that said they were controversial now say the paintings are amazing and make such strong statements.” Painting is an inextricable part of Philoche, and his relationship with art has truly consumed him personally and professionally. He explains, “Art showed me everything I needed to know but also took everything away that I know.” This evolving and experimental original, who grew up in Connecticut after moving to the US as a young boy, continues to put paint with passion. He has just introduced his new series, Come Fly with Me, which is already taking off! These pieces feature origami two-dollar-bill butterflies reminiscent of those childhood days filled with throwing paper airplanes out of windows. Just like many of his other paintings, Philoche is inspired by nostalgia mixed with his cutting-edge ideas, which he credits to the constant inspiration he finds all around him, resulting in rich textures and even richer insights packed into each painting.
“When I was 13, my dad bought me a wallet; inside was a two-dollar bill for good luck. It became really important to me, so I’ve put these elements into the new series. Come Fly with Me has been a big hit, so right now I’m still allowing the process to happen, and I want to see how far I can take it. There’s really cool stuff; the background of the painting is constantly evolving. That’s the thing about New York City - when I see something that’s really cool, I try to incorporate it. Some of my other paintings are structured or all the same, but this is all about evolving.” When you check out this latest series, you’ll see things in a new light – and with new colors! Philoche’s lush surfaces were inspired by how he views his adopted city, including the buildup of city walls, thick with traces of wheatpasted posters, advertisements, tagging and graffiti. Paper airplanes made from collaged reproductions of dollars and euros come zipping through the frames, leaving their swirling trails behind them in great looping gestures. Philoche’s innovative imagination employs the flippant use of $100 bills for paper airplanes, perhaps tossed unceremoniously from a window, exposing the bill for what it is: an abstract sign with no inherent material value once it has been detached from its system of circulation. The paintings’ irreverence for the sanctity of the dollar is matched by their playful interrogation of the modernist grid, now reduced to a single diagonal. The grid’s claims to universal, transcendental signification are undermined by the darting in and out of the paper planes, shot between the viewer and the sanctified field of vision. Philoche’s playful, nostalgic planes suggest both the mediating function of money, as it intervenes in all social and aesthetic relationships, and the absurdity of turning currency itself into the ultimate goal.
This artist’s advice for others in the industry who also wish to have a successful unstarving artist career, is this: “Keep painting what you paint; it’s like the fashion world. Don’t just try to do trendy art; it won’t last. You have to network and go out there and always meet potential collectors and go to the right parties. Being an artist is something I wouldn’t recommend for my worst enemy, but if that’s your calling, be prepared to do the work, be prepared to put yourself out there, and be prepared for the highs and the lows. I don’t think of success as one big break. It’s a lot of smaller stepping stones.” While he’s already achieved tremendous success with his highly sought-after works, which are coveted by both old and new collectors, Philoche is still chasing the dream. He said, “My ultimate goal is to be on the fifth floor of the MoMA next to a Rothko,” which he is well on his way to achieving, one stroke at a time! Aside from evoking nostalgia in his work, Philoche is also nostalgic for the days when he could walk into a gallery and the owner would introduce himself and take the time to look at his work. Now, he tells fellow and upcoming artists, “It’s all about hiring a good publicist. The world has changed so much in the past twenty years; you can’t just go into a gallery anymore and pitch yourself.” Philoche, who now has his own studio on the Upper East Side featuring his thought-provoking and mind-blowing masterpieces, is represented by galleries in Connecticut and Bridgehampton. He has also harnessed the powers of hashtagging and social media to spark a conversation about his visionary works worldwide. Philoche, who believes you should buy art “because it talks to you,” has indeed made his works talk – in a good way – to many collectors, from young finance and tech guys to serious collectors and art consultants. This brushstroke genius is also a businessman, and

he says, “I consider myself the CEO of my company and of my brand, and as the CEO and owner, I need to make sure my shareholders, my collectors, are happy and are seeing my work go up in value. My success has not happened overnight; we’re talking about twenty years in the making from networking and group shows and charity events and cool things I did where I met certain people.” Aside from being a dedicated artist, Philoche has a pretty decent art collection of his own. “New York has been real good to me, so when I sell a painting, I buy a painting. My walls are covered with art,” he said. When he’s not mixing paints, this artist makes sure to give back and is committed to helping save art programs in city schools. After all, Philoche credits art with “saving my life.” This artist, who grew up in a sports-oriented family, explained, “I hate hearing, especially in the city, when an art department gets cut. What they’re telling people is that basketball is more important than the arts. I try to do my part and donate a painting to raise money to keep the program alive. I always donate a really good piece – one side is I want to donate really good work so a lot of money can be raised, but I also want to spark a bidding war so people will come to my studio.” If you were smart, you would have already purchased Philoche’s art, but don’t fret; he is still displaying some of his best ones yet – just make sure you get them before he winds up in the MoMA, which will probably be sooner than later! When it comes to appreciating life, Philoche wants you to live in the moment and pay attention to what’s around you, including art – especially his. Trust us, you’ll be glad you did! Make sure to check out his latest collection of Come Fly with Me and be transported to a place of nostalgic memories and contemplation – you never know where it might take you! philochestudios.com

SASHA SIEM ㅌSolo Artist By Steve Stein
S
asha Siem is not afraid to get personal. Deeply, deeply personal. Psychological. Metaphysical. Spiritual. The singer, song writer and cello performer has two previous albums under her belt, but it’s her third upcoming release Holy that is raising curiosity, interest and expectations. The artist, who wrote and performed a good part of the album when she lived in Brooklyn with her husband and new baby, uses past experiences like motherhood, feminism and a traumatic incident from her past as inspiration for her music. Now based in London, she talks to Resident about her new release and the buzz she is generating. How would you describe your new album Holy, coming out April 26? Sasha: I’ve given up trying to categorize the music and am just going to say it’s POP. I love this particular genre because it embraces the possibility that anyone can enjoy. Holy is an arms-wide-open embrace-all

pop album. I want people to sing their hearts out and dance, dance, dance as they listen. How does it differ from your previous two albums? Sasha: My first album, Most of the Boys, was written from the vantage point of ‘me’ - one individual persona - a young woman coming of age, wanting to believe in love and failing at it over and over again. The second album, Bird Burning, was a story about a couple and the dynamic between the two. This third album is a series of anthems - it’s about the collective experience - the things that make us human, the aspects of our cosmos that unite us. So, in a way it completes a cycle of expansion I wanted to create - from ME, to WE:) What did you learn from making this album? Sasha: Everything! Mostly about myself as an artist; the message I want to convey; the truth of my voice;
how to constantly peel back more and more layers; to undress more and more; and to come as naked and as true as possible. With this album, I feel I am coming more truthful than ever. When I was 11-years-old, I wrote songs at my piano totally freely and unselfconsciously. Through the process of making my albums, I have journeyed back to an authentic, passionate and intuitive expression, which is most unfettered in my latest album, Holy. What is your inspiration when you perform and write? Sasha: My vision for a healed world. There is such mess around us, and I’m not OK with letting it be or accepting it. We have to change the world by changing ourselves. So, my songs start with my experience – fear, anger, challenges. By entering deep into my darkness and transmitting it through song and sound, I hope that it can be mirrored in the macrocosm.

this November. It was quickly restocked on Amazon. com but with a new formulation that is free of parabens, explains Suzanne Tripaldi, Director of Operations. New products are coming down now in 2019 including sheet masks. These cosmetics are based on formulas of her own that she has been using for decades. “I would be asked daily by people how I look so young at my age and how do I stay fit, so I decided to share my secrets.” Michaels loves the beauty and wellness field because she enjoys inspiring people in how to be youthful. “When we start to lose our youth, we panic and all sorts of things go through our minds. I like to be here to remind people of always having that healthy and positive attitude in spite of life’s challenges.” I ON THE SCENE As her adventures and knowledge grew so did the website which launched in 2008. “I always traveled but not as much as I do now. I am traveling to more exotic and interesting destinations so I decided to add a segment on travel.” You can find Michaels reports from red carpet events like the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, Grammys and Cannes Film Festivals as well as fashion weeks and equestrian events around the globe. Al Pacino, Bette Midler, Vanessa Redgrave, Quentin Tarantino and Ethan Hawke are just a few of the famous people she has interviewed. She has met many iconic stars over the years. “I love Joan Collins, she’s such a lady and so intelligent. Joan
Rivers was also a true inspiration at so may levels.” I On The Scene has a fresh look after a 2018 redesign with content from over sixty contributors in different locations and readers in France, Britain, Germany, Canada and Brazil as well as the United States. SINATRA’S RAT PACK In her youth, Michaels dated Frank Sinatra’s personal manager Jilly Rizzo and would tour and travel with Ol’ Blue Eyes. “I was considered one of the boys” she says referring to the 1960’s group of Hollywood stars that included Sinatra and his pals Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop. “That was my earlier days and was quite interesting exposure,” adding with a laugh that today’s 20-yearolds, “probably don’t know who Frank Sinatra is!” RETURNING TO MUSIC As if Irene doesn’t already wear enough hats she has recently retaken up music, something that was a passion earlier in her career. She even released an album but gave up that creative endeavor to concentrate on modeling, acting, and performing in local clubs around the city. When we met for this article, Irene had flown back from Europe, performed in the evening, yet was unaffected by jet lag. EQUESTRIAN AND PHILANTHROPIST More than anything, horseback riding is Irene’s true passion. “It’s more than just a hobby”. She has been riding her entire life and has always owned horses. “I have ridden and competed all over the
world earning my Colors which means I can hunt on any field in the country. Even with her hectic schedule she makes time to ride as often as possible. “It’s not an easy task at my age to be doing so many things and riding amidst all of it, so I am pretty pleased with myself in that respect.” This passion also extends to working tirelessly with equine charities including HART and Horses Without Humans and organization which both helps and find homes for retired racehorses. Most people may not be aware that many horses are slaughtered every year. “Owners cannot afford them so they just give them to a kill pen. It’s very sad, and it is very close to my heart, so I have become an ambassador for this cause.” Irene recently rescued a five-year old horse from the racing world, brought it to a stable where they cared and trained him. Eventually they found him a loving forever home . In New York Irene dedicates time to other causes such as the Alzheimer’s Association Rita Hayworth Gala and Gabrielle’s Foundation Angel Ball. She also supports Paws Chicago and Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation. Lastly and most importantly, she has found true happiness in her personal life with her husband Arny Granat a legendary producer of concerts and Broadway shows, "He is my inspiration and true love.” And she leaves us with one last thought, “There’s no business like show business"

producing more than 35 shows on Broadway, including the Tony award winning hits Spamalot, History Boys, August Osage County, and the current smash musical The Bands Visit, which received Best Musical, Best Director, Best Score and the two leading acting awards for a total of 10 Tony awards at the 2018 Awards. In addition, this creative duo produce theatre in 27 regional markets. In 2012 Granat founded Grand Slam Productions which produces traveling exhibits, concerts and events such as The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum tour and Bodies: The Exhibition which toured worldwide. He was instrumental in making Nik Wallenda’s 2014 tightrope walk across the Chicago River a reality. All in all, Arny has been involved with more than 100,000 shows and is still going strong. He remarks, “I will continue to be involved in the entertainment business until I stop having visions, and I believe that day is far away.” Cher, Fleetwood Mac, Grateful Dead & James
Brown So how did Granat get his start in such a high-profile industry without any family connections? “I made a right turn at the light instead of a left,” he says, “My dad was in the nuts, bolts and screw business. The name of his company was Active Screw and the motto was ‘What you need is a good screw!’ Every 16-year-old kid in my high school wanted to be on our baseball team, just so he could have a jersey with Active Screw written on the back.” After graduating from Michigan State University, he worked as a gofer for a talk show prior to Oprah’s hit show, produced a television show called Talk to Mr. Physic, and managed an act called The Human Jukebox. Soon after, Arny and his partner Jerry Mickelson started promoting small concerts while working as security guards at the Aragon Ballroom which eventually led the pair to major arena acts. Their first significant concert was in Saint Paul, Minnesota with Savoy Brown as the headliner, Fleetwood Mac as their special guest and Long John Baldry as the opening act.

Prince, Madonna, Springsteen & Billy Joel They eventually progressed to working with notable names like Kenny Rogers who was due to perform at Allstate Arena, formerly the Rosemont Horizon, and needed an opening act. Arny remembers asking himself, “who can I get” and George Burns who had the movie Oh, God! out at the time came to mind. He reflects, “I’ll never forget seeing George run around the arena like a kid at the ripe age of 80-years-old. I asked him, ‘how do you keep going? You have so much energy’ and he looked at me and said, "Stay booked!”. Other acts the pair worked with at the time included Prince, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Grateful Dead, Billy Joel, Lionel Ritchie and James Brown . He also founded the influential powerhouse FM radio station WXRT, which was a 24-hour Spanish station, and brokered the time from midnight to 6am with rock music. It became one of the most successful stations in Chicago. The largest venue they co-owned was the World Music Theatre, now known as the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre, in Tinley Park Illinois, that had a capacity of 30,000 people. It opened with Cher and the Grateful Dead, “but not on the same bill," Arny remembers with a wink. Frank Sinatra, Arny & Irene Granat recalled one incident at the venue when he was posing for a picture with Frank Sinatra who asked him, “is my fly down?” to which Granat responded, “I respect you Mr. Sinatra but I’m not going there,” to which Sinatra replied, “I like you kid.” In the 1990’s Granat was involved with Sinatra professionally and says, “I met my wife Irene Michaels via Frank at a post-performance dinner in Aurora at a casino, as Irene was dating one of his managers, Jilly Rizzo.” It took 30 years but they reunited and married in 2015. I asked Irene how she made her marriage work with two such frenetic schedules? "We both have established lives and careers so it was understood that there would not be a lot of sitting in front of the television.” Irene laughs, “and that is okay because we support each other.” Arny concluded by saying something he firmly believes , “It is easier to go in the direction the horse is already headed."

RICHARD JAMES Modern British Menswear Store By Ann Grenier
R
ichard James is pleased to announce the opening of its first American store in New York, located in a landmark building at the corner of Park Avenue and 57th street. This opening marks Richard James’ first step towards its international expansion following the sale of a majority stake to Charles S. Cohen in March 2017. The 2,260 sq. ft. interior has been designed by Andy Martin Architecture, which also designed the house’s original flagship London store on famed Savile Row. Martin identified four main brand characteristics in Richard James’ recent collections, from which visual and performative references were drawn: Reflection, Transience, Chroma and Illusion.

The store is delicately divided into two main areas, Ready-to-Wear and Bespoke. The areas are separated by a translucent screen treated with a dichroic film that varies in color, luminosity and reflectiveness. This free-standing screen becomes the central feature of the new space, operating both as a vibrant backdrop to the displays in ready-to-wear, and a circulation distributor, concealing the private Bespoke area. The element that blends the two together is a stretched ceiling, which conceals an adjustable ambient light system, providing a changeable personality. This becomes a canvas for future art driven installations. This is a natural progression for us as well as a
very exciting one. Richard James has always appealed to men of a certain attitude more than any defined demographic and we’ve had a very strong following in New York ever since we opened our first store on Savile Row. We just feel that we’re at home here - Sean Dixon, Richard James Founder & Managing Director Richard James’ seasonal ready-to-wear collections and bespoke services will be available at the New York Flagship. 461 Park Ave. New York, NY 10022 richard-james.com

SHIREEN ARANI The Go-to Lawyer for Couples in Transition By Adam Morgan
You’re a high-net worth developer expecting a contentious divorce. You’re an independent, successful executive marrying into a wealthier family. You’re the parent of small children worried about negotiating custody.
What got you into law, specifically matrimonial law? It’s intellectually and emotionally challenging. I’ve always loved communicating and negotiating, and in this field I am working directly with clients to resolve disputes, many of which are deeply personal.
They’re common situations people find themselves confronting. Fortunately, New York has a very large talent pool of matrimony attorneys. Working her way up to the top is Shireen Arani, a Partner at Katsky Korins LLP, a mid-size general practice firm here in Manhattan. Shireen is one of the most astute matrimonial and family attorneys working in the city today, with a keen grasp of the complex and constantly changing law. Since beginning her career as a law clerk in the Family Court, Shireen has built a portfolio of high-net worth clientele who have found in her a fierce advocate with an expertise in all aspects of divorce, pre-nuptial and other marital and co-habitation agreements, child custody, relocation, modification, and enforcement actions. Equally comfortable in the courtroom as she is in the office or conference room, her hallmark is satisfied clients who come away from the process with their needs met or exceeded whether through negotiated settlement, mediation, or litigation. Shireen has a been designated as AV-Preeminent®, the highest professional excellence rating by Martindale Hubble®, recognized as the gold standard in attorney ratings, and has been named a Top-Rated Family Law Attorney in New York and Boston by the Reuters Super Lawyer® evaluations.

If you do not enter into a prenuptial agreement, seek advice on how you may take measures to protect yourself by managing your income and assets to limit your exposure. What advice do you give clients looking to start a family? Regardless of whether or not you are married the decision to have a child with another parent will bind you together for life. Choose wisely! What are the most common mistakes people make when getting a divorce? Using the divorce and judicial process as war reparations against a spouse. It won’t work, you’ll spend an enormous amount of money to no avail, and you’ll feel worse in the end. If you have children, you may permanently damage any chance of co-parenting with an ex-spouse in the future. How do you keep up with laws that are constantly changing? I analyze recent decisions and changes to the statute and discuss these changes with colleagues. We’re constantly learning. That’s what’s exciting about practicing law. What expectations/ perspective do you share with the client before the process starts? I like to get an idea of how the client ideally envisions how the case will resolve. This helps guide the case in the right direction and allows me to address unrealistic expectations at the

DEBORAH KUHN Monarch Butterfly By Bennett Marcus
A
ctress Deborah Kuhn has had a wide variety of roles, from playing the mother of a young Bruce Springsteen in The River to a prostitute for Charlie Sheen on “The Tonight Show.” In 2018 Kuhn reached a new milestone, writing, producing and starring in her first short film, titled “Monarch Butterfly.”
Actors Green Room A recent screening at the Tribeca Screening Room was a success. “We felt like we had to invite friends and tell them to ask certain questions,” Kuhn says. “ But we didn’t have to. People were asking questions, we had great feedback.” Subsequently, it was named among the best of the Actors’ Green Room Short Screening Series.
deborah-kuhn.com Tribeca Screening While honing her craft and auditioning, experts in the industry told Kuhn she needed to do her own film instead of waiting for calls from casting directors for “Billions” or “Homeland.” “You need to make your own work and then put it out there,” Kuhn says. Her acting coach told her to write a script, but she was terrified, having never written before. Then she found a dark monologue that was perfect and got her creative juices flowing. “I was getting my facial done, and the girl afterwards says, ‘I don’t know what you’re thinking, but your eyes were just going back and forth,’ and I said, ‘I think I just wrote a film.’” After numerous revisions, she filmed it last summer in Cape May. Her acting coach directed, and helped her to cast the film.

Film Festivals, Best Short Monarch Butterfly has been submitted to 33 film festivals and it has already racked up three awards, for excellence, original score and leading actress (for Kuhn) in the Best Shorts Competition. Her film will also be shown at the NYC International Film Festival in January. NYCIFF.com While awards are gratifying, the 16-minute film also works as a calling card, and Kuhn can show industry folks the one-minute trailer. “You would love to have someone at a film festival say, ‘I love her writing, or I love her work, let’s bring her in.’” More writing, acting and producing Now Kuhn will write more, and make one short film per year. “I want to keep going, and then make
a feature. But I’m okay right now with doing short films. I feel safer.” Her next may be about Down syndrome, which she’s long been interested in. “My niece was a nanny for this little boy, and she taught him sign language, and I was just so intrigued with that.” Kuhn didn’t start her acting career in a conventional way. The small-town Ohio native worked for Delta Airlines , and traveled the world as a flight attendant. She’d lived in different cities, and once she settled in New York, decided it was time to overcome self-doubt and reach for her dream of becoming an actor. It was her husband who encouraged her to really pursue her craft full-time. “It’s kind of like having someone that loves you give you that permission,” she says. “I’ve been devoting all of my time to it. Now I’m out there meeting more people, I’m meeting more casting directors.” Kuhn is represented by Michele Peacock of Andreadis Talent Agency. andreadistalentagency.com

ANTHOULA KATSIMATIDES “Warrior Without a Cause” By Bennett Marcus
A
New York Moment Just eight months into her acting studies, Anthoula Katsimatidㄷes landed a role with Oscar-winning director Ang Lee in “Taking Woodstock.” “I was like, well, this isn’t that hard. I was only doing this for eight months, and I got a job. What are people complaining about?” she laughs. Katsimatides quickly realized it was beginner’s luck, largely due to her Greek heritage – she’d met a Jewish casting director and they bonded over the similarities between their cultures. The woman had just cast a Greek-American, Demetri Martin, to play a Jewish character. “She said, ‘You could play his sister! I don’t know if you have any talent, but here are the sides, come back in a week and let me see what you do.’ It was crazy. It was a total New York moment.”
United Solo Theatre Festival, she plans to tour with it, and is exploring venues in L.A. and in Greece. Olympia Dukakis documentary Katsimatides is a producer on “Olympia,” a documentary about the Academy Award-winning actress Olympia Dukakis from director Harry Mavromichalis. “Over the course of six years, I’ve sort of been the
Michelle Pfeiffer, De Niro, Fonda There have been more pinch-me moments in the ten years since, working on projects with directors like Barry Levinson and Luc Besson, and actors Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jane Fonda and Rose Byrne. “It’s hard for me to even acknowledge that. Katsimatides says. “Maybe it’s the Greek in me pushing myself too much but I have been blessed, and I am grateful.” TV roles on HBO, CBS & NBC A writer, producer and voice-over artist as well as an actor, she’s recently had roles on HBO’s “The Wizard of Lies,” CBS’ “FBI” and NBC’s “Manifest,” and will be appearing in an upcoming Marvel series on Netflix in 2019. She knows that being an actor is not easy; competition is fierce, the work is not steady, but Katsimatides is not afraid of a challenge. Teacher, NY civil servant, tragedy A New York native, Katsimatides started out as a high-school teacher and took some time off after her brother’s suicide. She then entered politics, as an aide to Governor Pataki of NY State. “It was fascinating because I got to meet all these different kinds of people. It was a great job.” Katsimatides lost another brother in the 9/11 terror attacks, and was appointed to the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, working with other grieving families. “It was a very, very tumultuous time, and I suffered my own loss.” As a favor, she agreed to appear in a friend’s Greek-language community theater play in Astoria. She loved it and started taking acting classes. United Solo Theatre Festival She recently developed a solo show titled “Warrior Without a Cause” in which she portrays 10 different characters. “In astrology, my Dharma type is a warrior, and nothing is more fitting than that. I’m totally a freaking warrior,” Katsimatides says. With sold out performances at various solo theatre festivals and an award for best autobiographical script by the
