EDITOR’S NOTE
A
s we get ready to ring in a new year, we often find ourselves reflecting and making resolutions. Whatever goals you make for yourself, make sure to get a head start in one of our favorite getaway destinations! From posh tropical spots where you can roll out in the latest resort wear collections to an enchanting river cruise with AmaWaterways, which offers some whimsical winter itineraries, 2020 is looking lavish! This month we spoke with the unbeatable Blair Underwood, who is taking over Broadway in A Soldier’s Play, which is currently in previews at American Airlines Theatre. Growing up in a military family prepared Blair for playing the deeply personal role of Captain Richard Davenport. A Soldier’s Play, which showcases life for African Americans during WWII, delicately demonstrates both the injustices and incredible strength of these soldiers at the time. While he is perhaps best known for his film roles, Blair’s first love was the theatre. He even made his acting debut at a local dinner theatre while still in school. Blair, who lives in Los Angeles, might have a large fanbase, but he is also a huge fan of the Big Apple, and is excited to perform for audiences on America’s most famous stage. This down-to-earth actor opened up about the state of diversity in the theatre world, and his new relationship with the Roundabout Theatre Company. You won’t want to miss Blair’s moving performance in this showstopping new show. When it comes to selling million-dollar listings in Manhattan, Fredrik Eklund is still the master! Fredrik, who has found happiness in both his personal and professional life, is still ruling the real estate scene, and is, of course, everyone’s favorite personality on Bravo’s Million Dollar Listing New York! Tap into your techie side this year with Talsam, a stylish new jewelry line which connects to your smartphone and offers some brand new safety features, or finally learn how to get glammed in a snap – literally – with HairPeace Pro, the easiest way to get non-damaging, lustrous locks. You can also fulfill your resolution to make more time for yourself at Haven Spa, where your tensions will melt away after a relaxing and personalized massage. Wishing you all a happy and healthy New Year! May 2020 be the best yet!

Its second victory appeared when it made the cover of the New York Post and its Bella Hadid @ Art Basel final triumph came after controversial performance artist David Datuna calmly ripped the banana off the gallery’s wall and ate it in front of shocked onlookers. DR. HADLEY KING
Taking Dermatology to New Heights with TruSculpt By julie sagoskin
E
ver since moving to New York City, Dr. Hadley King has been ruling the cosmetic and medical dermatology fields. From fillers to lasers, this Ivy League graduate is leading the way with new technologies, including the truSculpt iD, a truly revolutionizing procedure.
being super invasive like open heart surgery. I can do lasers and injectables and small surgical procedures, and I really like that combination. And I love the diagnostic challenges in dermatology, and the science - there is a lot of interesting science in medical dermatology, particularly immunology.”
Dr. King, who is now growing her own practice, grew up in Pensacola, Florida, before heading to Harvard to study biochemistry and eventually enrolling in medical school at Columbia. After doing different rotations and checking out various specialties in medical school, Dr. King, who was interested in molecular biology since middle school, seemed destined to go into dermatology.
After finishing her residency, Dr. King started her first job at Sloan Kettering, where she was focused on procedures relating to cancer and skin cancer. This passionate doctor, who went into private practice with Dr. Doris Day on the Upper East Side about twelve years ago, opened up her own small practice about a year ago. Her new studio space, located in the Nomad area on Madison between 32nd and 33rd, offers the truSculpt iD, as well as cosmetic injectables.
“Dermatology seemed like a good fit for me because I am very visual, and dermatology can tell us so much about what’s going on inside the body by what’s going on in the skin. And I love working with people, and getting to work with people on an everyday basis is something that’s unique about dermatology among the visual fields in medicine. I also like that I get to work with my hands without

“TruSculpt iD is a device from Cutera that uses radio frequency to kill fat cells – it is a unique technology that uses monopolar radio frequency to penetrate through the entire fat layer, raising temperatures to a degree that will kill the fat cells permanently, and then your body disposes of them.
You will lose on average 24 percent of your fat and will see the full results after 12 weeks. Each session lasts 15 minutes. You’ll feel warm but remain comfortable, there’s no burning and no downtime. This is meant for people who are fairly fit but have problem areas, most commonly the belly, love handles, upper arms, thighs, above the knee area, bra fat area and submental double chin. The competitor of truSculpt iD is CoolSculpting, but truSculpt iD has two big advantages, including the fact that radiofrequency tightens the skin so there is no loosening and you can use individual handpieces, up to six at a time. This makes it very individualized and easy to treat exact areas. The handpieces stick on top of the skin, so there is no clamp involved as in CoolSculpting, which can create an unnatural looking contour which we call a shark bite deformity. You don’t get that with truSculpt.” While her own studio is entirely cosmetic, Dr. King practices both cosmetic and medical dermatology at Dr. Day’s office, where she routinely works with acne, skin cancer and eczema, as well as cosmetic injectables, lasers and other devices for resurfacing
and tightening the skin, and PRP, which she described as being very “popular” right now. “Over the past several years, people have steered towards more non-invasive, or minimally invasive options. Surgical procedures are still being done, but it’s become more popular for people to consider non-surgical options first.” According to Dr. King, opening her own practice last November has “felt like an exciting accomplishment. I’m thankful for the experiences leading up to it and I am honored to feel the support from my patients. I have also worked with device companies, including MelaFind and DermTech, which offer cutting edge technologies that help dermatologists evaluate moles and decide whether or not a biopsy is needed. There are also skincare brands I’m involved with, including an acne line named AcneFree. Bringing awareness of these products and technologies to a larger audience is another fun aspect of being a dermatologist.” In addition to working in both her Uptown and Midtown locations, this dedicated doctor is also a Clinical Instructor of Dermatology at Cornell where she teaches residents, and even works a few days a month in a town called Presque Isle, in Northern Maine. “It’s hard to imagine as a Manhattanite, but this area, with a population of 70,000, has no dermatologists. I have a colleague who has been going up there and treating patients for the past several years, and I just started joining him this past year. It’s really busy when I go, there’s always a waiting list. There are many potato farmers who get a lot of sun exposure and skin cancers, but then it also gets cold and dark for most of the year, which exacerbates conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. It’s rewarding to feel needed.” When she’s not working, Dr. King tries to find time to stay both mentally and physically fit by regularly going to the gym and staying active. This cutting-edge cosmetic and medical dermatologist lives in Midtown East and loves exploring the city and different boroughs. “I love to walk around with my dog and see what’s happening in Brooklyn and check out new restaurants and bars and shops. I’m mostly vegan and Iove that there is such a vibrant food scene. The city really caters to vegetarians and vegans. I also love the art world and going to museums and galleries. I’m involved in the Park Avenue Armory and enjoy performances there. I’m also excited about the Shed, the city’s big new performance space. I really love to travel whenever I get a chance. This year I made it to Israel, Greece and Denmark.” If you want to look and feel good, Dr. Hadley King has just the painless procedure for you! drhadleyking.com

HAVEN SPA Noho’s Most Serene Space By lauren bens Now that the holiday season is over, you can finally focus on yourself, and there’s no better place to step up your self-care game than at Haven Spa. This chic Noho spot, located at 250 Mercer Street, offers plenty of upscale treatments so that you can achieve total relaxation. Audra Senkus and Gabrielle Ophals, who first met when they were freshmen in high school, opened Haven Spa in 1998, and have been helping people to look and feel refreshed with their signature facials and other treatment for over two decades. “Gabrielle and I were very interested in the new ‘day spa’ model that emerged in the 90’s, and we started looking for a space to make it happen,” explained Senkus. “We had a small skin/nail/wax salon and were excited to expand in order to start offering body services such as scrubs and massages. We found a space in the late 90’s and started building. We wanted to open Haven in Soho because we liked the Downtown feel. The area was still gritty in the 90’s.” From the moment you enter Haven Spa, you are transported to a hip yet heavenly space, where you can choose from a couple’s massage to a personalized manicure. Their most popular services include the Boot Camp Facial and Haven’s own Hydra Facials, which Audra explained, “are exceptionally effective for almost any skin type. With respect to massages, we have created some unique, targeted services to really zero in on specific needs. For example, our Geek Massage addresses upper body issues from sitting at the computer hunched over for hours. Our Bitch Massage addresses the needs of women during their monthly pains - such as swelling, pain, irritation. Our Harmony massage incorporates sound therapy to rebalance one’s natural vibrations and bring about a feeling of balance and serenity.” Let’s just say that whichever massage you choose, you are sure to leave in a more relaxed mood! If you are into the “industrial glam” design of the space, which includes exposed brick accent walls, you can thank Mary Saleeby, their talented designer. Although the décor is definitely chic, according to Audra, comfort is the most important thing. “We want people to relax and feel good when they’re here.” If you want to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, Haven has a treatment that will fit everyone’s needs.

In addition to their already serene services, Audra is excited to be launching laser hair removal. “With the newest technology it’s going to be much less painful!” she explained. She also said that while most of their customers are women, she is seeing a trend in men booking appointments as well. “Men are definitely coming in more and taking care of themselves, as they should.” While these two are reinventing the cool girl’s spa, Gabrielle and Audra explained that they really identify with the “local place” persona. “While many of our clients travel from all over the city and tristate area (and beyond), we strive to build relationships with our neighbors” said Audra. “While we look big, we’re really a mom and pop. Someone once
commented that we’re, just two girls from Queens who own a nail salon, and I have to say I kind of love that! We are, in a way, just that. Yes, we are certainly more than a nail salon, but we are native New Yorkers who love the city and our neighborhood and our clients. Haven is home to us and we hope our clients feel the same way.” Enjoy everything from scrubs to waxing at this spa, especially during these dry, winter months. One of their Haven favorites include the Hamman, named after the traditional Middle Eastern bathing ceremony, offers a moisturizing full body experience while eliminating all traces of dry, flaky skin. You will also enjoy a 15-minute steam room session to prepare your skin for the deliciously scented black soap, an
authentic Moroccan beauty routine. This service also involves being exfoliated from head to toe with a gentle glove that removes dead skin cells. Relax while you are covered in in Rhassoul clay that is sourced from the only known deposit in the world, located along the Middle Atlas - it tightens, purifies and firms the body. You’ll rest in the clay for 15 minutes, while you enjoy a relaxing scalp massage. After the purification experience, the body is massaged with a dry Argan Oil, leaving skin with a satin dry finish. From their famous facials to a fun boutique, Haven is sure to become your new favorite hideaway! havenspa.nyc

HAIRPEACE PRO Professional Hair in a Snap
I
f you’re looking for some peace of mind when it comes to having long and lustrous hair in a snap – literally – HairPeace Pro will change your look and more importantly, your life! Kelly Levesque, an international performing and recording artist, along with Celebrity Stylist, Dalina Rebollo, decided to create real, high-quality clip-in hair in various colors and lengths. When she wasn’t on tour, Kelly still wanted to look performance ready, and was struggling with the upkeep of her extensions - Dalina heard her bad hair day hysteria and the Hairpeace Pro was born! This “Wigstension,”
24 | resident.com
By julie sagoskin an extension/wig hybrid, is made with one hundred percent human Remy hair with no tracks, meaning you take your hair to new and seamless heights! “With our 10-clip placement around the “peace” part, there is maximum hold and equal distribution, resulting in no damage to your own hair,” explains Kelly. “We have personally and professionally tested this new design to make sure you can wear the HairPeace Pro without fear of it being detected or falling out in any situation - it’s rollercoaster, convertible, motorcycle and leaf blower approved!”
Each hair peace is a piece of cake to put in, and is made not just for entertainers and celebrities, but for everyone, from busy moms to working professionals to students and everyone in between! As Kelly demonstrated, all it takes to get perfect hair is to create a “peace part” using your two fingers to make a peace sign in the middle of your eyebrows. “Go back 4 inches to section a 2-inch wide by 4-inch segment of your natural hair at the top-center of the head. Then, simply clip in the “peace” and either leave your hair down for added volume and length, or tuck in all of your remaining hair and customize your length so you can be easily glammed
up and ready to go! This 30-second trick allows for quick and effortless blending and positioning, making the HairPeace Pro the most time efficient hair piece.” The pieces come in 14”, 18” and 22”. They can all be custom dyed, cut and styled – your long locks will last a long time! With seamless blending, you can also create a bombshell bob. That’s because in addition to adding length, it can also take you from long hair to short hair. “However long your shortest piece of hair is from your “peace part” is the shortest length you can go with no regrets or an awkward re-growth time,” added Kelly. “Also, unlike some extensions, our “Wigstension” allows you to achieve many hairstyles without the risk of exposing the secret. From a high ponytail to a half ponytail, waves, braids and more, the options are endless.”
While it used to be considered taboo to talk about hair extensions, it is now perfectly acceptable to find yourself in a hairy situation whenever the topic is broached. “We live in a time where social media is giving people a false narrative on what beauty truly is, but it’s also a platform where we can talk about and share our beauty secrets and celebrate how we all enhance our own beauty. It’s important to be transparent about our beauty tricks and that’s why with our website we NEVER airbrush our models and they are only wearing one HairPeace Pro. So what you see is actually what you get!” While they do have a range of clients, Kelly still recalls one of her favorite reviews from a mom who was able to achieve what her children referred to as “magic hair” due the fact that in less than a minute, she was able to walk out the door looking like HairPeace Pro perfection. “We also have people who have never even considered extensions because
they have thick curly hair (lucky!) and the thought of styling and maintenance was too much for them. However, our “peace” can provide the look of a blowout in whatever time it takes you to blow dry the 2-inch by 4-inch front section of your hair (the peace part), and the rest of your hair gets tucked away in the lower half!” Kelly and Dalina are proud to help others struggling with hair issues. They strongly believe in the concept of “looking good, while giving back,” so they have aligned with the Cancer Treatment Centers of America and are working on a program to gift high quality hair to those in need. Whether you choose the 14” or 22” piece, you are sure to find inner and outer peace with the HairPeace Pro! hairpeacepro.com

JUNE JACOBS Skin Care Maven By Bennett Marcus
I
n 2003, skincare entrepreneur June Jacobs started her eponymous business, while opening her own laboratory to manufacture the company’s products. Her daughter, Rochelle Jacobs, wanted in, and even prepared a PowerPoint presentation to persuade her mother to bring her on her team which was met with a resounding no; however, June’s business partner saw potential in Rochelle, and the mother-daughter team have been partners since 1999. Mother-daughter Business Jacobs’s daughter, Rochelle, runs the business with her, and the two are committed to combining cutting-edge science with botanical remedies. “I decided with the June Jacobs line to make it natural, to have no paraffins, no preservatives, no sulfates, no dyes, and to make sure the scent was with an aromatic and not with a fragrance,” she explains. Coming from a large family whose ancestral home was in the Mediterranean, Jacobs went back to her roots in developing her skincare line. “I remember visiting them and seeing all these gorgeous Middle Eastern women putting this stuff on their faces, and my mother said, ‘That’s why they look beautiful, that’s why they look young.’”
28 | resident.com
Jacobs followed that tradition in creating her line. “It’s very clean, very simple, it just has the best, highest percentage of those antioxidants that really work.” Their Private laboratory “In order to successfully bring products to fruition quickly, you really need to have research and development people,” Jacobs says. Most companies depend on outside labs, and a product can take a year or more to come to market. When Jacobs gets an idea, she simply calls her chemist, and within 60 days or so, it is up and running. “I’m never put in back of the line, I never have inventory issues.” Hotels & Sephora China Along the way, Rochelle spearheaded projects that led to the company’s growth, such as entering the competitive spa industry. In 2015 June Jacobs cosmetics launched in Sephora stores across China. Rochelle had to build teams there to make sure it all rolled out smoothly and learn what Chinese consumers want. “Having 200 doors in one country, it’s definitely a different business model.” She also oversaw a rebranding of the full product line, organizing them into eleven collections based on their benefits, such as hydrating or anti-aging, and updating the packaging. June Jacobs drives the innovation, and
daughter Rochelle takes over from there. “Once we have a product, I am then of course the guinea pig. I make sure everything feels good and does what it’s supposed to do.” junejacobs.com Naturally Serious Last year, June and Rochelle Jacobs released Naturally Serious, a line of clean and ethically developed skin care products sold exclusively at Sephora as well. Naturally Serious combines naturally derived ingredients with cutting-edge technology. Each product works overtime to protect and improve the look of skin and features a revolutionary preservative-free antimicrobial complex of natural acids to prolong shelf life without the use of harsh preservatives. June states, “We are who say we are. Naturally Serious checks every box and is cleanly developed. Our target consumers are skin-conscious, socially responsible, and results driven—and demand the same from their skin care products.” Rochelle adds, “We wanted to create something unique at the intersection of both that was still approachable and affordable. We’re thrilled to be included in Sephora’s new clean category to make shopping for clinical and natural products that much easier.” naturallyseriousskin.com

MAISON ATIA
Faux Fur Never Looked So Fashionable By lauren bens
W
ho says faux can’t be fun? Emerging brand, Maison Atia, which recently opened a store on Madison Avenue, is seeking to disrupt the faux fur market by translating the luxury touch of real fur to their new material. A combination of high-end craftsmanship and traditional fur heritage techniques, Maison Atia creates chic coats and accessories through their limited collections. Maison Atia, which is already gaining the attention of A-listers, including model Gigi Hadid, was started by Chloe Mendel and Gustave Maisonrouge. Chloe, 27, whose father is Gilles Mendel of the famous J Mendel brand, known for making haute gowns and REAL fur, is the sixth generation of the house of Mendel. Let’s just say she grew up around glamour and is now bringing her own touch to each and every piece. Chloe lives between New York and Chicago with her son, Augustus, and partner Billy Corgan. We spoke with Chloe about how she started

her brand and what she envisions for her very fashionable future.
transportation to one of their shelters for every coat we sell.
What inspired you to use faux fur? Is this something you are passionate about? I am the sixth generation of a long line of furriers. I had been thinking for quite some time of taking this heritage, identifying craftsmen who still use these old-school fur techniques and working closely with them to take their unique savoir faire into the faux fur medium to create animal cruelty-free luxury faux fur creations. It was a journey for everyone as they had never worked this material.
What makes the brand so unique? Is customizing a crucial component? As a brand, our DNA is to create luxury faux fur pieces, only using the best quality products, with an almost couture-like approach to each style, with details that the luxury client appreciates. It does require real knowledge of our processes, and we always need to share our story and our philosophy with potential new customers so that they can understand how and why we are different.
I have been involved for years with Paws Chicago, a leading no-kill shelter in North America, and have adopted five animals from them over the years, so it felt as if the stars were aligned – from the moment we launched, we created our #BuyACoatSaveAPuppy campaign, which provides a homeless pet
We have a number of small capsule collections so each coat is practically unique so our client has not yet felt the need to ask for customization. We are however customizing pieces for our 833 Collection that lives in our ephemeral boutique, with vintage patches making each coat totally unique to each person.
How did your vegan leather sneaker partnership come about? My co-founder, Gustave Maisonrouge, has known the founders of Koio Collective since they launched in 2016. Their vision is aligned with ours as they too work only with the finest materials, using the best shoe craftsmen in their field, who are all based in Italy. We all met last summer 2018 to see how we could each tap into our respective expertise to work together and create a sneaker with fabrics that are part of our Classic and also Fall 2019 collection, using vegan leather and faux fur. Koio was amazing in challenging their craftsmen in Italy to use our fabrics – a first for them. Koio is as perfectionist as we are, so It took over a year to receive our capsule collection: it was definitely worth the wait as everyone is raving about them! Why did you choose Madison to open your first boutique as opposed to a downtown location? Gustave and I grew up in the Upper East Side, and we love our neighborhood and it felt right to both of us to be here. On top of that, Madison Avenue remains ‘the’ luxury destination in New York. So we decided to focus our search and zoom in on this neighborhood, specifically from the low 60s to the high 70s. Personally, it also had a sentimental component: I always dreamed of having one day a boutique on Madison Avenue, as
I grew up hearing how my father, Gilles Mendel, was 27 years old when he opened his first boutique on Madison avenue. I am now the same age, and I feel it is one of the hopefully many ways I can show him how much he has shaped me to be the woman I am today. Future plans to open other locations? We would very much like to open other locations in the future, but the reality is that It is challenging to find the right combination of location that makes sense for us, overall space and layout: we could not have dreamed of a more perfect boutique for us than 833 Madison: not only is the location ideal (hard to beat being on the same block as Prada!), but the boutique itself was perfect for us. Its vibrant colors match our playful attitude towards luxury. Gustave was keen on making the boutique a truly experiential space, and envisioned hosting not just a number of events, but also other brands – as I mentioned earlier, we look forward to hosting McLaren, and iconic jewelry brand Marina B, and welcomed WeR2 last week and had a discussion between Suchi Reddy, the founder, and Wendy Goodman. So the fact that the store is on two floors, which some brands find challenging as it is tough to get clients to go much past the front of the store, was the perfect layout to host panel discussions while keeping the first floor open for customers who want to discover the brand.
Did your family’s fashion background make you want to enter the design world? I always knew I would do something creative, but wasn’t sure where it would take me. My brother took his creativity into the world of music, which is as challenging as the world of fashion. I did do a number of internships at my father’s Atelier, and I believe that ‘s when my ideas crystallized, and that’s when I first came up with the idea of taking the family heritage into faux fur, and offering women alternatives if they wanted to look and feel glamorous. Your background? I’m 27 years old! I honestly don’t have much background! I’m still figuring it out everyday. Besides interning for J.Mendel, I managed my partner Billy Corgan’s tea shop called Madame ZuZu’s in Highland Park, Illinois. We are currently reopening for Spring 2020 (which is very exciting). I guess my background is an eclectic collection of many unique experiences beyond design and motherhood. Favorite New York spots? With two young children I barely go out! But I do love tea at the Lowell Hotel, the Central Park Zoo, and dinner at JoJos restaurant. My children LOVE the Natural History Museum. maisonatia.com

t might be chilly out, but your Sunglass Hut x Sarah Jessica Parker shades are sure to add style to any winter outfit this season. This exclusive limited edition collection will definitely brighten up all your days – let’s just say that Carrie Bradsaw would own a pair – or fifty pairs. “Partnering with Sunglass Hut on this exclusive collection has been such an exciting experience and I’m so pleased to unveil the styles in my favorite place, New York City,” said Sarah Jessica Parker. “Sunglasses have always been a staple in my wardrobe. It was very important to me when creating this collection that they would be an accessory I would want to wear all the time, no matter the occasion. I owned a pair of shield shaped sunglasses in the 90’s that I absolutely loved, and I was so sad when they were discontinued. People would ask me where to buy this style and now I can happily say they are available at Sunglass Hut.”

She might be a famous actress, producer and businesswoman, but Sarah Jessica Parker is also a busy mom, so she designed her fashionable line, which comes in five shades, to be both fun and functional. “Like many women and working mothers I’m constantly moving from one event or meeting or appointment to another, so I love the fact that these sunglasses are so versatile and lightweight. I feel comfortable wearing them knowing how easily they fit into my life and personal style, which was an aspect that helped shape the direction of our creation process.” The sunglasses, which feature a bold silhouette and feature the. African American officers. I have quite a unique perspective of my people and the culture and honor and duty that comes from that specific upbringing in a military family and growing up on military bases.”
“A Soldier’s Play takes place in 1944 in Louisiana, at a time when there were only five black officers in the army,” explained Blair. “My dad was a general in the Vietnam War in the ‘60s, and it was still rare to have
Though he is perhaps most well-known for his on-screen roles in shows including LA Law, Quantico and City of Angels, Blair began his acting career with live theatre. This ambitious actor, who began studying drama in junior high school with his teacher Mrs. Warren in Warren, Michigan, continued doing plays upon moving to Petersburg, Virginia. He eventually started doing local dinner theaters where he was paid $75 a week. “I thought, not only do I get to do this but they’re actually paying me – I can’t believe they’re still paying me to perform!
rom a new Broadway show to upcoming film projects, one thing’s for sure: don’t ever underestimate Blair Underwood! Blair, who grew up in a military family, is bringing his own background and passion to A Soldier’s Play, which is currently in previews at the American Airlines Theatre. Directed by Tony Award winner Kenny Leon, the Broadway debut of A Soldier’s Play features a powerhouse ensemble cast starring Blair alongside veteran David Alan Grier and Jerry O’Connell with former NFL great Nnamdi Asomougha.
“I love storytelling and exploring different worlds and cultures and characters and time frames in history and even in the future. You can transport yourself anywhere, whether it’s telling stories by a campfire or escaping through a book or movies and television. Storytelling is at its finest when you can do it in a communal way, in a theatre, where the energy in that room ebbs and flows and we all feel it at the same time. It’s magical. It’s what I love and have a passion for. I also love film and television for different reasons. You do the work, you tell a particular story, but you’re committed to film for life. It will live on way past my lifetime, and you can look back and see how young you looked!”

In addition to appearing in various productions with theater companies in Richmond, Virginia, this now A-list actor went to Carnegie Mellon, where he studied theatre and received a bachelor’s in fine arts. Blair, who is back in New York for the duration of A Soldier’s Play, first moved to Brooklyn in 1985 until a job brought him out to Los Angeles. Though he’s been involved in both theatre and film, A Soldier’s Play seems fated to have found its way to Blair, who found about it after receiving a text from his manager saying that director Kenny Leon wanted to speak with him about a new show he was doing. “He told me it started off as an offBroadway play at the Negro Ensemble Company and became so popular that it was turned into a movie called A Soldier’s Story starring Denzel Washington and a young man named David Alan Grier. I had seen the movie and I loved it, but I had never seen or read the play. I respected the story and the writing of the play, which had won a Pulitzer Prize. I was most interested to see the context of the theatrical production, which features 12 characters: nine African Americans and three Caucasians.”
This dedicated performer also said that while more progress can still be made, theatre has become much more diverse. “I’m not sure why it’s taken 35 years for this show to make it to Broadway, or why the Roundabout Theatre Company stood up and made it happen, but I’m glad they did. They also have another play coming up called Caroline, or Change. We’re a diverse people and a diverse culture, and Broadway is the epitome of the world stage theater, so I get excited about this; it’s encouraging to see.” Playing Captain Richard Davenport in A Soldier’s Play has definitely struck a chord for Blair, who drew on his own experiences growing up in order to portray his character. “I dealt with coming from a military family, so I came with that vantage point and perspective, as well as the highs and lows of the black American solider and the soldier in general and in particular during World War II. Working on this with Kenny just made sense. I found the experience and this role to be much deeper than what I had anticipated. It was about uncovering and delving into the character and his mindset at the time being able to find the honor and representing yourself and your race and your culture by fighting for your
country in a pursuit that would somehow humanize you in ways that people didn’t see in this country at the time. Being a young child, growing up on military bases, I would watch my father be a father, but then he left our home, and I would see him become this military officer facing the world. The trap sometimes of playing military personnel is to play the rigidity, the precision, the barking orders. Our job as actors is to create underlying emotions of the characters in that story as well as the relevancy of these people. I took my own personal experience to defend the human being, the character, and to see what makes this guy tick and think and feel and hurt and make him a living, breathing person in 1944. The first time you see him, he’s very casual. The captain is also the narrator in the play who sets up the story, and there are three different monologues to tie it all up. I saw him telling a story very casually. He’s smoking a cigarette walking down the street, and as with all stories, when they affect your or teach you, you start to relive those emotions that bubble up inside you and how they manifest into this play is how the story unfolds. I’m dedicating my performance to my father, who is 87 years old, and I will do whatever it takes to get him and my mother to come see the show.”

This powerhouse of an actor also demonstrated how powerful the process of preparing for this role was to him. “There’s this perspective of your outside armor and what that uniform represents. It’s not just metal bars on your shoulders; rather, it’s about how it’s draped on you. You’re making a statement with everything you wear and how you wear it. His hat and his glasses are representative of who he is. He uses his glasses as a shield and only wears them when he’s engaging with white officers. In 1944, this was a real rarity, because instead of cow tailing and being subservient, he has equal reign – to reflect yourself in his glasses and say I’m not intimidated or afraid is his strong way of rebelling, and it speaks a lot to Captain Davenport and his methods.” Blair, who explained that a revival is meant to bring something fresh so that audiences see and feel things in a new way, also began to gain a different perspective, and hopes that this version will resonate with a new generation. Working with acclaimed director Kenny Leon also allowed Blair to expand his creative horizons. After all, Kenny, who has been described as Broadway’s leading African American director, won the Tony Award in 2014 for Best Director of a Play for A Raisin in the Sun. This historical drama may have history repeating itself! “I was aware that a lot of these soldiers were not given the respect they were owed after fighting for this country overseas. In this world that Kenny has created, you feel things in different ways, and that affects how you live the character and create your performance. What I love about the performing arts is that you’re receiving knowledge, and just like with a book or documentary, when you can translate emotion into intellect, it becomes a much deeper journey.” Even with decades in the business and a new play, nothing can hold Blair back from bringing new projects to life, including a moving movie set to be released early next year. The film, which is in four parts, focuses on Madam CJ Walker, played by Octavia Spencer. Blair plays the husband of Walker, who became the first African American multi-millionaire from her African American haircare products empire.

The unstoppable Underwood also narrated a book coming out called Olympic Pride, American Prejudice, which was a documentary written, produced and directed by Deborah Draper. So far, he has done five books with Simon and Schuster called Blair Underwood Presents. Olympic Pride, American Prejudice is a story from the 1930s that ties in thematically with A Soldier’s Play. “It takes place during the Olympic games where Jesse Owens won four gold medals, but there were 17 other African American athletes who set out to find honor and dignity and to complete in Nazi Germany in 1936. People said you shouldn’t go over and give them the time of day, but they said, ‘If we can prove our athletic prowess, and show that we’re as good or better, we should do it on the world stage.’ It’s based on an award-winning documentary and is now a book written by Travis Thrasher. I also did a project called Dear White People for Netflix. It’s fun and satirical but gives a very insightful look into African American students on a white campus.

The writer and creator, Justin Simien, then invited me to be in his movie called Bad Hair, a fun production he wrote, produced and directed. It’s going to premiere January 23rd at Sundance. There’s this whole genre of hair possession films in Korean and Japanese culture, where the weaves possess people. This project is about black people and their weaves. I play the uncle of the female lead whose character sheds light into hair and how it gets into our DNA, our biology.” He might live in Los Angeles now with his wife and three children, but Blair has always been a fan of the Big Apple. Over the years he has lived in the city while filming different projects, including Sex and the City and The Good Wife. “I love New York. Every chance I get, I’m here. Part of being an army brat is I’m ready to get on the next plane out. I live in Hell’s Kitchen and can walk to work. I’ve always felt like a New Yorker in spirit; it feels like home. I love California too; it’s a balancing act. When you grow up in a nomadic lifestyle, you learn to
enjoy things wherever you are. I love the integrity of the theater and the artistic work here. It’s a different texture than that of Los Angeles. There are so many great places here, but when I go out, I like this little Italian restaurant called Orso. I used to go to Sardi’s every night when I was working here years ago. They would put me at my favorite table in the back corner.” Though none of his children are planning to follow in their father’s acting footsteps, Blair’s 21-year-old daughter, who is currently studying communications in college, did inherit her dad’s dedication for storytelling and already has an eye for discovering talent. Don’t be surprised if you see this fatherdaughter duo collaborating on a film in the near future! With an exciting new play and additional projects in the works, including a film he wants to direct and star in after his Broadway run, Blair always brings it, and he just keeps getting better!

FREVO
Meet the Young Stars Shaking Up The Restaurant World By Lauren Bens
C
hef and co-owner Franco Sampogna, General Manager Bernardo Silva and Sommelier Quentin Vauleon, all 30 and under, are the three young rock stars taking over the New York restaurant scene. This power team, which serves up some tasty dishes at their newly opened contemporary French restaurant, Frevo, is doing things their own way. Despite a façade which looks like an art gallery and no obvious sign that there is a restaurant behind a “secret” door, Frevo’s seasonal menus and creative concepts already have them filling up seats fast! With a total of 18 guests at the chef’s counter as well a private chef’s table, you will be to get an up close and personal look at what kind of masterfully crafted cuisine is cooking. The flavorful fare served at Frevo is just as electrifying as the restaurant’s rocking area – after all, they are located right next to Jimmy Hendrix’s legendary Electric Lady Studios in the West Village. Chef Franco Sampogna’s innovative five-course menu consists of two appetizers, a meat and fish course, and of course, a decadent dessert. Bernardo Silva, who is originally from Portugal,

moved to the South of France at 17 to work in his godfather’s hotel, and immediately fell in love with the hospitality business. “The rooms were all decorated with art, which I loved, and I did every job, from restaurant service to hotel manager. I wanted to expand my knowledge and study the business side of things, so I enrolled in a hospitality and restaurant management program in France. I moved to Paris to work with a luxury hotel and started out at the five-star Shangri-La. I also worked in yachts and met some very interesting people. After a while, I wanted to go back to the restaurant scene and began working with well-known a chef at a Michel star restaurant which mixed fine dining with a more relaxed atmosphere. It was a great experience. I really loved the techniques and realized that the high-end dining world was changing – guests were looking for something less pretentious in the overall experience.” These Frevo founders first came to New York about three a half years ago, and have been revolutionizing French cuisine with their fresh menus. “Franco first contacted me to come to New York to help
renovate and open a restaurant for an investor,” said Silva. “He needed a manager to help with the service and I always knew that we would have a project of our own one day. The restaurant scene here is amazing. The people are from everywhere and have seen a lot of things and expect the best. When you get a rewarding review from a New Yorker, it’s the best compliment that you can get. Other than the fact that he’s an amazing and talented chef, Franco was always open to different concepts and passionate about playing with art and interior design. We started planning ideas back in the day when we first met about ten years ago. We have similar goals and ambitions and it’s worked for us.” These bad boys of the restaurant business also don’t mind breaking the rules. “Chef Franco Sampogna is brilliant with fish,” explained Quentin Vauleon, 27, who was named the Best Young Sommelier in France. “We started with the halibut and wanted to highlight it with a light red wine. We’re now working with the scallop and pairing it with the red wine as well. We’re really doing things our own way – it’s not just about white with seafood and red
but also incorporate bottles form Spain, Italy Switzerland, Morocco and even New World wines from the United States, Australia and New Zealand. Our high-end pairings include champagne to start and always a Burgundy, while our regular wine pairing is focused on smaller producers of wines. We have an open exchange with the customer, it’s not just about pouring the wine. That’s really why I love this job. You also have a lot of distributors in New York, and they always let us come and taste and discover. The whole world is getting better every year at producing great wines.” The brilliant Brazilian-born Chef Sampogna, who previously spent years working alongside France’s most acclaimed chefs, including Alain Ducasse at the Hotel Plaza Athénée’s restaurant, even beat out thousands of contents to win second place at the international San Pellegrino Young Chef 2015 competition when he was just 24 years old. Franco, who went to culinary school in Nice, France, brings his own charm and flavor to Frevo! “I love the diversity of New York, and the fact that you can find any kind of cuisine that you want wherever you are. At Frevo, our goal was to bring the highest quality of food to a very unique setup. We want to make sure everyone has the best experience possible. It’s a very small and intimate environment that allows us to bring a special touch to the restaurant. We use a lot of ingredients, from curry to herbs and spices, and are always going back to the French technique of simplicity. Our menu is five-courses, with meat here. We sometimes pear wine ciders and beers with desserts too.” During the first few months, the restaurant didn’t have a liquor license, so Quentin started creating fresh juices, including a concoction with cucumber, ginger, green apple, tomatoe, strawberry, pepper and juniper. While this became a popular choice, you can now order wine from around the world and choose between the $96 wine pairing or a $220 premium wine pairing, inclusive of service. “I don’t come from a wine region. I’m from Brittany, France. It’s a beautiful region but there’s no wine. I was very curious about food and gastronomical culture and eventually fell in love with the wine industry. I wanted to learn more about it so I started working in Paris at 21 and then spent five years there practicing in beautiful spaces, including the Ritz Hotel during their reopening.” Quentin also travels regularly in order to meet producers and select his perfect pairings. “People in New York are very open to trying new types of wine. We have a lot of wines from France, of course,
and I promise you won’t leave hungry. I worked at some great restaurants, I wanted to learn the right way. We create our menus, which change every two to three months, by following the seasons. I’m waiting to add black truffle to the next menu. Every dish here has to be a ten. A seven isn’t going to make it onto the menu. A lot of restaurants are very transactional, but guests here have a real relationship with us. We’re having a conversation, an interaction with you. Our diners also love that the restaurant is a bit secretive, and they don’t want us to tell anyone about it because they want to be able to get in. I tell them that that is completely fine if they help us pay the rent! I was 28 when we opened the restaurant so we couldn’t afford a larger space at the time, but it worked out because we made the restaurant unique.” Franco, who enjoys exploring the area’s farmers markets and picking the best products, is loving creating contemporary French cuisine in New York. “I’ve always also had a dream about making it in New York, even before coming here. Our menu is approachable. People can look at items and relate to them, they don’t have to go into a dictionary to look things up. We don’t use overcomplicated products. I really think simplicity is better sometimes.” Rather than turning the gallery area in the front into a bar, they decided to fill it with artwork from an artist Toma-L whose work he had admired for years – and yes, it’s all for sale and changes with the seasons just like the food! frevonyc.com

TUDOR CITY STEAKHOUSE And Their Tasty Treasures By Lauren Bens

ith succulent steaks and a chic setting, Tudor City Steakhouse has taken over the food scene in Midtown Manhattan. This special spot, which feels secretly tucked away despite being centrally located, is a popular spot for private parties, after-work drinks and business lunches. “Nestled in the little slice of paradise that is the historic Tudor City complex, ours is a next generation steakhouse with a menu that not only showcases premium prime dry aged on-site beef specialties, but international dishes as well, reflecting our location across first avenue from the United Nations,” explained Mirso Lekic, who opened the restaurant two years ago. “We’re just three blocks from Grand Central Terminal, but it seems a world away in this quiet circa 1927 enclave that was the world’s first high rise residential development.” Serving fine fare is all part of the Lekic family tradition. “The hospitality business is something both my father and grandfather made their living from. When I was a child, I used to visit them at work. When I got older, I decided this was in my blood, and was the right career choice for me.” Indulge in enticing appetizers, prix fixe lunches and happy hours at this inviting space, where you will find wooden walls, tufted leather sofas and soft green chairs. This sleek spot is definitely not your grandparent’s steakhouse!

Choose from crab cake or beet salad appetizer, which you are sure to enjoy every bite of, before digging into their Grilled Salmon served with sautéed string beans and carrots, Chicken Paillard with mixed greens and onions or Caesar Salad with Grilled Chicken or Shrimp – just make sure to top off your mouthwatering meal with a tasty Cheesecake or Apple Cobbler! Sit back and relax at their Late-Night Happy with bar bites, sangria, beer and wine, making this the perfect place to unwind.
Although the restaurant industry is always a challenge, especially in New York, this hardworking and hospitable restaurateur, who is devoted to the hospitality business, said that it’s important to “adjust to the ever-changing dynamics of people going out to eat on many different levels of dining, ranging from cafe style, to casual fine dining, to captain service fine dining. It’s also about trying to find the right type of people to work in the restaurant and blending in with the neighborhood, so that guests - whether they be local, or coming in from elsewhere - enjoy themselves so much they come back again and again.”
While all of their diverse dishes are divine, the real showstopper at Tudor City Steakhouse is the steak! Their meats are all U.S.D.A Prime and dryaged in their own aging boxes. Share the Porterhouse for two or more or dig into the Prime New York Sirloin Steak, Ribeye Steak, Skirt Steak and tantalizingly tender Filet Mignon. They also offer vegetarian options and fresh fish including Dover Sole, Chilean Seabass, Brook Trout and Grilled Yellowfin Tuna.

According to Mirso, his gem of a restaurant is “a little off the beaten track of Manhattan, which makes it a peaceful little getaway. It is so close to Grand Central, but is in its own world, so to speak.”

THE METEORIC RISE OF THE
EKLUND GOMES TEAM What Is Next For The ‘Million Dollar Listing’ Powerhouse By Hillary Latos Photographed By Nicolas Guillen 4th
Shot on location at 35 East dilido drive Miami Beach and at the penthouse of the Residences of the Miami Beach Edition
N
early 15 years ago, Frederik Eklund and John Gomes joined forces together and 10 years ago they created the Eklund Gomes team at Douglas Elliman proving that a strong friendship can lead to a wildly successful business relationship. Fast forward to 2019, they have become the highest producing real estate team in the US with 79 team members spread across four offices from New York to Miami and Los Angeles. Their success can be attributed to their chemistry and complementary personalities that can be seen onscreen throughout the 8 seasons of Bravo’s ‘Million Dollar Listing’ with Eklund’s larger than life personality that is grounded by Gomes’ meticulous attention to detail behind the scenes. Always on the go, Resident Magazine caught up with this dynamic bi-coastal duo during Art Basel Miami Beach in the
midst of their whirlwind schedule as they talked about their latest expansion, secrets to success, and what makes their team unique. What are your keys to success as a team? Fredrik Eklund: We joined forces in 2005 as business partners and we fought a lot in the beginning, but we also feel like we won the lottery in life. It’s not every time that you can work with your best friend and that is the true meaning of success. It’s about making money, building a team, and becoming the number one team in the nation that is based on the premise that we are all one family. It was more important to have a loving, free, and eccentric team where everyone can be themselves and push the envelope in the industry.
John Gomes: I think the key to our success is that we are so different. We have a similar drive and philosophy to life but our approach to life and our work is very different. Having two men that complement each other makes a strong and successful team. What do you feel are each other’s strengths? JG: Frederik has a vision for our business based on what it should look like and how it should grow. He’s very photogenic and good on television. I’m more of a doer in the background and I trust his vision. Fredrik refers to us as a duck above water. He’s floating, pretty, so beautiful and graceful, but I am the duck’s legs under the water trying to keep up with him. I also envision him as a hot air balloon. He could fly away if I didn’t grab onto him and keep him grounded. At the same time, he keeps lifting me up and pushing me further.

living Tell us about the expansion from NYC to Miami and Los Angeles? FE: After being the #1 team in NY we decided about two and a half years ago to expand to Los Angeles and we got the blessing from Howard Lorber to venture out with a warning that this would not be an easy task. The last two years have been very challenging. Although I live in California, I’ve been in New York and Miami every week setting up big teams in each city. Our roles have changed from just being brokers and showing properties. It was a messy middle where we had these great plans, but as we began to execute them, we realized how difficult it really was. On the other side, when we see what we created we are so excited, proud and happy. We haven’t seen any super team that is traveling around servicing buyers and developers in these markets. I live in LA, John Gomes lives in NY, and Julia Spillman, the CEO of our Miami office just relocated there for the season. We are a trio. Miami has really blown up and we call it Miami Takeover. We have over $200 million in listings here including some really big trophy apartments such as the Miami Edition Penthouse and the Four Seasons in Ft Lauderdale. JG: I woke up one day and I felt like I was trapped. I have a great career in NYC, but I felt anchored in NY and felt that I could only ever work in NYC. Since I was a boy, I always had this dream that I would be bicoastal. We had always worked very hard on building a brand. Because of Fredrik and his presence on television Bravo gave us access to over 40 countries in the world, and I thought, ‘why wouldn’t we expand?’ It’s foolish to think that after so many years of growing the business, why not grow it bigger and follow our clients to wherever they may live. We have a lot of celebrity clients that live between LA and NY, and clients that go from NY to Miami, which is basically the sixth borough. Why lose that business opportunity. What do you think are the different dynamics of these diverse markets? FE: They are so different and unique. Money is flowing into these different markets, especially for the luxury customer. Most of our clients have homes in all three markets or have plans to be there so in that way it’s not so different. Miami is less seasonally driven than it used to be, but it’s not like NYC which is all year round. LA is harder to break into because it’s the same people who have been there for decades and the market is a little smaller there. There are single family homes, and not as many new buildings, which is what we have the most of in NY. However, 70 percent of the most expensive zip codes in the US are in California. There’s a lot of wealth and big properties, and we have some of the most exciting properties there such as 8899 Beverly which is one of the best and most expensive projects in LA. JG: New York is fast paced and has higher price points and it’s also vertical in the same way as Miami, but it also has many single family homes. In NY you have attorneys and in Florida the agents really have a big role in the contracts. NY moves faster and in LA it takes a little longer, you have co listings and need to build relationships there such as entertaining clients and taking them to lunch.

living
66 | resident.com
How do you like living in Los Angeles? FE: Regardless of what I do in my professional life I know that my kids are having an amazing time. They are in the pool or in the park and I don’t want them to grow up in an apartment with snow. Professionally if we are looking to do well in these different markets one of us had to be there because you can’t really grow a team by email. Yet I don’t feel like I moved there because we are all rotating which energizes me. For me, what was really exhausting was sitting in the office, seeing the same markets and buildings and doing the same thing all the time in NY, but being in all of these markets is like a wet dream. JG: For me, the most exciting thing is being in this dynamic triangle. Sometimes I leave NY at 6 am and I work all day in Miami and board a plane at 6 pm to return home to NY. Sometimes I fly across the country and I can be there for one to three days which makes me better at what I do because it makes me happier to have this amazing energy in all three markets, which keeps me on my toes. Which projects are you most excited by? FE: In LA we are most excited by 8899 Beverly, they bought the site 10 years ago and it took 10 years to get approvals. It’s the best and most expensive project in LA in a while. Olson Kundig is the architect who just did Bill Gates’ home and has a billionaire following. We feel very proud to be part of these new developments. In NY, new developments have been very challenging this year because of an oversupply of inventory yet at 40 Bleecker we have one penthouse left,
and everything in this property got full asking price and it’s not even finished yet. JG: This is a difficult question to ask because we both have twins and it’s like asking us which twin we prefer. We work on these projects from inception and there are aspects from each one that we love. Sometimes we help the locations find a developer, and can introduce them to the architects, the interior designers, and the collateral firms. Sometimes we work on these projects for five years at a time before we sell them out. This is a creative expression which feels like a part of us. We’re also working on some very tall and significant buildings that will change the market. What can we expect for the next season of Million Dollar Listing? FE: We just finished filming season 8, and each season can take over 9 months to film. I’m hoping to film more in Miami and LA. I think the amazing thing with Bravo is that the format has changed with us as our lives have also changed. We have kids now and the business has grown which is exciting to show our audience. How has television changed your life? JG: I knew Fredrik before the television show, and he’s been my best friend throughout the whole process. I’ve become a very good photographer and take his selfies with his fans. As we move through these different cities, people are very excited by him and they love to see him and can’t believe they are lucky enough to bump into him. He’s the reality star and looks so real and is so approachable. I think other celebrities are sort
of aloof, but people look at him like he’s a friend. It’s been great for our business because it gives our listings a tremendous amount of exposure. FE: You wouldn’t interview us if I wasn’t on tv! What sets your business apart from other real estate teams? JG: There aren’t many teams that do what we do. Our team is a very well organized machine that’s changing the way the industry is looking at the business of the future. It will be hard to compete with teams like us because we have such a presence with a structure and reputation which makes us successful. Our structure has a CEO who runs our business with a COO who assists her with multiple assistants and presidents in each city. We could never do what we do if they didn’t do what they do and sometimes they don’t get enough credit. We didn’t know Miami or LA, but we connected with those very talented and highly respected individuals who are in the field who educated us. They are the unsung heroes. Fredrik and I used to do everything it took to sell each apartment and then we gradually started to add people. Our roles began to change, and we became ambassadors for the brand. We create things on the front end and our team is selling everything on the back end. Without them we would be nobody and unsuccessful. It wasn’t so easy to do this, but we built our brand to this level. It has been exciting but scary at the same time. theeklundgomesteam.elliman.com

AMAMAGNA
Europe’s Most Enchanting River Cruise By Julie Sagoskin
F
rom Christmas markets to worldrenowned museums, the AmaWaterways Romantic Danube itinerary included some of the most charming spots in Germany, Austria and Hungary and was just what the doctor ordered for a whimsical winter getaway – and I was definitely in the mood for some enchanting explorations! Waking up in a different city on the Danube every day was definitely the way to do Europe. While AmaWaterways offers awe-inspiring trips aboard their luxury boats across Africa, Asia, Europe and some of the world’s most historically significant cities and sites, this is the perfect time of the year to take time for yourself and travel in amazing Ama style. They are also adding more of their popular wine centric cruises to Europe’s premiere wine regions in the new year. Though they have a fleet of over 20 ships, boarding the AmaMagna, one of the newest boats in the AmaWaterways arsenal, was definitely a showstopper before we ever set sail. This unique river cruise is twice the width of all other European river cruises, making it the crown jewel of this family-owned company. Upon entering the boat, I was most taken aback by how much it looked like a boutique hotel. With trees in the lobby flanking both sides of the staircase, glossy travertine floors, lounges that resemble a
74 | resident.com
hip South Beach hotel, five bars, libraries and a screening room, this was not your grandparent’s river cruise! While river cruises are known for appealing to an older demographic, the industry has been trying to dispel that notion for some time, and the AmaMagna might be just the vessel – literally – to make that happen. With less than 200 guests and plenty of high-end amenities and entertainment options, this cruise felt more like a private chartered yacht. Each of the four on-board restaurants had its own vibe, so you could dine in differing ambiances during the duration of the trip. Most unexpected was Jimmy’s, a dimly lit restaurant where guests could sit together around long wooden tables and get to know each other over family-style dishes. You could feel the modernity of the AmaMagna in this mouthwatering spot which was named for AmaWaterways’ late co-owner Jimmy Murphy. After being greeted with a glass of bubbling champagne, you can enjoy a six-course meal of some very tasty treasures at The Chef’s Tasting Table, the AmaMagna’s most intimate dining experience. Their award-winning chef and his team served up a foam-pumpkin soup, fresh river fish, filet, and other memorable and palatable plates.
For a casual yet satisfying spot – with a great view, retractable windows and outdoor seating – Al Fresco serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. With a grand breakfast buffet of lox and bagel, freshly baked pastries, cheese platters, salads, meats and a made-to-order omelet section, the main dining room definitely made me a morning person! With menu options always available in case the buffet just wasn’t enough, and all the fresh juices, smoothies, coffee and anything else you desired delivered by friendly faces, I found myself in the main dining room more than any other part of this stylish ship. Let’s just say that passing by ancient castles, rolling hills, fortresses and vineyards on this romantic river cruise made for some breathtaking views with every bite. Think eating on a boat can become monotonous and a missed opportunity to try authentic, local cuisine? Think again! From a true Bavarian lunch, complete with plenty of bratwurst and other German delicacies, to wiener schnitzel in Vienna and Hungarian Goulash when docked in Hungary (which I still have a hankering for!) they made it easy to become immersed in each port’s cultural cuisine. With eating becoming my most consistent pastime on the trip – they even had late night snacks every night – it’s a good thing the AmaMagna had a Zen Wellness Studio with a fitness center, massage
services and bikes on the deck overlooking the river. They also had a wellness host who gave daily classes. Their spa services, including manicures and pedicures, in addition to a full-service hair salon, were a great way to tune into the serenity of our stunning surroundings. The long roof deck was the perfect place for watching picturesque spots along the river, and even featured a heated pool and whirlpool. Being twice the width of all other river cruises means that most of the 98 rooms are suites and range from 355 to 710 square feet. The wooden accents, modern appliances and amenities, including flat screen TVs, Apple desktop, touch-screen technology and spacious bathroom, reminded me of a floating haute hotel, and stood in stark contrast to the historic towns we went by – which you could watch from the oversized balconies. From manager Raul’s friendly greetings to my “secret” tour of Captain Jan’s control room, the AmaMagna became my very homey home away from home. Another core aspect of AmaWaterways is their element of surprise. Whether it’s finding a scarf on your bed as a welcome gift, getting a mug to fill up with hot beverages at the Christmas market in Vienna, receiving Mozart chocolate balls after a day of exploring Salzburg, being treated to a wine tasting at a 800-year-old winery with live music or even being able to send as many postcards as you want from the ship (they replenish supplies on-board daily) it’s the little things that make for one big special trip - the crew even sent me a postcard upon my return home! Their inclusive shore excursions are also part of the AmaWaterways way. The river cruise has its own line of luxury buses which are great for arriving to each destination in style. With outing options in each town, and a knowledgeable guide also included, you are able to get a taste of the small towns that dot the Danube, as well as big European cities, including Vienna and Budapest. The tours included UNESCO World Heritage sites, world-class museums, the famous Melk Abbey and medieval towns, such as Durnstein, home of the world’s best apricots and one of my favorite spots where time stood still. They even arranged for an optional classical concert in Vienna one night and of course I had to see where they filmed scenes from “The Sound of Music” around Salzburg and the surrounding Austrian Alps. The fog settling on the Wachau Valley also made for some spectacular sailing. While cruising along, Ama had plenty of activities planned, such as an Austrian strudel making demonstration and live music in the lounge every night. Your New Year’s resolution should be to book an AmaMagna getaway! amawaterways.com

LE BLANC
SPA RESORT CANCUN
The All-Inclusive That Gets it Right By Lisa Loverro

hile there are enough resorts dotted along the powdery, white sand beaches of Cancun to satisfy the needs of everyone from honeymooners to spring breakers, there is one that stands out from the rest. The all-inclusive, adult-only Le Blanc Spa Resort, catering to those who appreciate first class service and luxury accommodations, provides an unparalleled experience in one of Mexico’s premier destinations. Located just 25 minutes from the Cancun Airport, this 260-room luxury beachfront property is an adults-only resort, boasting suites with terraces, deep soaking spa tubs and panoramic ocean views. Guests will enjoy in-room amenities such as a scented pillow menu, BVLGARI bath products, aromatherapy menus, and a dedicated butler service. The room amenities also include fully stocked minibars, and liquor dispensers featuring premium brands such as Absolut, Bacardi, and Johnnie Walker Black Label whisky; all included, all free of charge. The décor is contemporary and minimal, all furnishings are white, with cream-colored marble flooring throughout. There are three outdoor swimming pools; the main one, located as you exit the lobby, is a spectacular beachfront infinity pool offering a swim-up bar and in-water lounge chairs. Directly above, on the property’s third floor is another infinity pool, more subdued but with the same beautiful ocean views. Lastly, their lagoon pool, where activities such as aqua spinning, and water aerobics take place also offers a swim-up bar. All pools have attendants that are quick to offer you buckets of bottled water, a cool compress and even a cucumber eye treatment. The pristine beach offers lounge chairs,

day beds (which must be reserved in advance and for a fee), and a beach bar. The resort’s Spa has 19 Le Blanc D’Or treatment suites, including 4 master suites with hydrotherapy tubs, 3 indoor couples suites, 10 multifunctional suites, 1 Golden suite and 1 Vichy suite. The Spa’s hydrotherapy circuit is offered to all guests (free of charge) whether or not you have booked a spa treatment. From saunas and steam rooms to an ice room and a cold plunge pool, it’s the perfect activity during a rainy day (as I experienced while there). There is a fully equipped gym with daily yoga, stretching and Pilates classes. In addition, the resort features five finedining restaurants with cuisines including French, Italian, Asian, and International. The main restaurant, “Blanc” offers breakfast and lunch buffets during the day, and an “a la carte” Mexican restaurant for dinner. The most formal dining option, “Lumiere,” serves French cuisine and is the only restaurant requiring a reservation. In the early evening hours the resort has live music in its lobby bar, while the late night ushers in a DJ or live show at their third-floor club, “Cavo.” Every night you can dance the night away to music ranging from Rock and Pop to Raggaeton and Hip Hop. I was fortunate enough to see a Michael Jackson tribute show while there, as well as a classic rock band. Needless to say, the evenings are never boring at Le Blanc Spa Resort. To sum it up, the resort is hip yet sophisticated; luxurious yet relaxed. Basically, Le Blanc Spa Resort is everything you could want from an upscale property, and a must visit when planning your next trip to Cancun. leblancsparesorts.com

ERICA GRAGG
Leading the Trend in Wellness Travel By julie sagoskin
E
rica Gragg, founder of the luxury wellness travel company, Escape to Shape, calls herself a “gypsetter.” Travel has been a passion of hers since she was young, and she has always loved to explore places before they become too popular, too mainstream, or too over-crowded. She caught the travel bug when she first visited South Africa, Borneo, and Indonesia (Bali and Java) in her mid 20’s. At 31 she moved to Mexico and temporarily fulfilled her passion for travel by living abroad, until the yearning to experience more of the world and share it with others was too strong to ignore. In 2008, with her partner Francesco Anchisi, Gragg founded Escape to Shape, a leader in authentic and memorable wellness experience-based holidays. Breaking the mold of a ‘yoga retreat’, Escape to Shape set the standard for luxury small-group wellness travel through its combination of physical activities (yoga, Pilates, barre, cardio, circuit training, hiking, biking, etc.), meditation, mindful eating, and exploration of the unique culture of each destination. While the travel industry has shifted towards wellness vacations in the past few years, Escape to Shape remains a leader in wellness tourism because of its deeply immersive travel experiences that take guests beyond the guidebook in the most captivating locales.

Each Escape is personally scouted, curated, and hosted by Gragg and Anchisi, so guests experience the best each country has to offer, as well as insider access to off-the-beaten path cultural gems, designers and artisans, chefs, and experiences. While experiences are a natural part of travel, Gragg believes it’s important for people to ‘travel deeper.’ This could be establishing personal connections – whether with like-minded people or people different from those within the confines of one’s day-to-day life – or authentically witnessing a culture and being able to interact with it as well, to get in shape, or stay in shape, along the way – for one’s body, mind, and spirit. “Travel can profoundly impact a person’s life, offering them the rare opportunity to disconnect from their day-to-day routine, shift perspective, connect to people they may have never met otherwise, and most importantly, reconnect to themselves in the process,” says Gragg. “It can make a person’s soul sing.” Just imagine taking African dance lessons in Cape Town, South Africa; trekking horseback through the vineyards in Colonia, Uruguay; experiencing an authentic Berber meal in the peaks of the Atlas Mountains in Marrakech; journeying inside a volcano in Iceland; swimming with baby sea lions in Galapagos,
Ecuador; hiking peaks & valleys in breathtaking Bhutan, and more. When it comes to traveling alone, Gragg says no one should be afraid. “It’s so empowering! Traveling solo allows people to be more open to new experiences and meeting new people. One of the most rewarding things that I see over and over again on our Escapes, whether in Africa, Bhutan, Ecuador, Iceland, Italy, Morocco, or anywhere else we travel, is how a group of people arrive as strangers yet depart as lifelong friends.” Another thing Gragg stresses is that traveling should not be stressful – at all. You should never feel that you need a vacation to recover from your vacation. “One of the things we always strive to accomplish is to offer a well-rounded vacation,” adds Gragg. “We believe in moderation, not deprivation, and the guests who join us typically embrace this motto.” For Gragg, the ideal location offers, “A sense of place. It must have its own personality, so to speak.” When asked about her favorite destination, she had difficulty answering. But, if she was forced to pick just one, she says, “Right now I am obsessed with India.” escapetoshape.com

CHRISTOPHER RIM Motivating the Next Generation By w. a. muller Photographed By neil tandy Mary Hubbard | Artistoftheface.com | Face Atelier – Dermalogica Shot on Location at 32 East 1st Street
A
d4.0 GPA and perfect standardized test dscores won’t get your kid from Horace dMann into Harvard. Christopher Rim had neither, yet was the only student from over a dozen at his high school that was accepted to Yale. “Don’t waste your time,” Christopher’s high school guidance counselor replied when he declared he was applying to the elite New Haven school. Christopher knew he lacked the perfect numbers Ivy League schools reputably desired, but he also knew that his unique extracurricular activities made him stand out among his peers. Perhaps Yale recognized Christopher’s entrepreneurial spirit, which led him to start a tutoring company in 8th grade, a global non-profit organization in high school, and, after Yale, Command Education - the nation’s leading educational consulting company. How It All Started The ambitious spirit that helped land now twentyfour-year-old Christopher in the Ivy League was apparent early on. In the eighth grade, Christopher placed out of mathematics and into a class where he was asked to work on a year-long project building a website. He decided to create a website for a math tutoring company. While his friends bagged groceries at Englewood’s local grocery store, fourteen-yearold Christopher grew his first business. That winter, the Westfield Garden State Plaza Mall was so impressed
that they offered Christopher free ad space on the billboard in front of the mall’s Sephora. Three years later, a family friend committed suicide as a result of severe bullying, and Christopher knew he had to take action. He started It Ends Today, a global non-profit organization with the aim of educating students on the harmful effects of bullying, and the ways in which students and teachers alike can improve school climate and culture. The organization made an impact on both a local and national level, expanding into over a dozen chapters across the U.S. What Top Colleges Are Looking For By the time Christopher applied to Yale, college admissions had evolved from admitting legacy students in the 1950s and stereotypically wellrounded students in the 1990s to recognizing passion and impact in the early 21st century. Schools were no longer looking for well-rounded students. They now searched for students with a singular focus, a “hook”, who would add unique value to their college communities. The fall after he was admitted to Yale, underclassmen from Christopher’s high school asked for his assistance with their applications, and he obliged. Unbeknownst to Christopher, Command Education’s foundation
was laid. The first student that he helped was admitted to MIT, the second student to Stanford. These acceptances built Christopher’s credibility among New Jersey and New York parent groups. During his sophomore year, Christopher successfully guided thirty students through the college admissions process. By the time he graduated from Yale, Christopher noticed that students applying from elite private schools like Horace Mann or boarding schools like Deerfield were struggling with college admissions. One distressed private school parent came to Christopher this year to register their younger son. The year before, her high achieving daughter, who had near perfect GPA and perfect SAT and SAT II Subject Tests, was deferred and ultimately rejected from all of her top reaches. In the face of brutal competition, the students who tended to be offered the coveted spots at Ivy League and other top tier schools were athletic recruits, children of double legacy families, or minority students. Christopher wanted to help the students who fell between the cracks to stand out amongst their peers. He knew that the key to receiving admission to college was no longer just earning perfect grades and test scores, but making an impact within a student’s school and community.

Emotional Intelligence at Yale Christopher’s mentoring philosophy was heavily informed by his college studies. At Yale, Christopher studied psychology under Dr. Marc Brackett, Director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. As a research assistant, Christopher helped conduct a school climate survey of 44,000 high school students. The survey found that 75% of the words that students used to describe how they felt at school were negative. The most common words used were “tired,” “stressed,” and “bored.” If this is how students felt at school, then Christopher knew they weren’t maximizing their potential. Christopher wanted his work with students to help them feel just the opposite. He knew acting on his passions as a high school student had led to his happiness and success, and wanted to help his students find their own interests. So, Christopher developed a highly individualized mentoring style by spending time exploring and developing each student’s unique passions and ambitions. Today, this philosophy lies at the core of Command Education’s mentoring. Christopher says mentoring relationships are successful because students can relate to their hand-picked, near-peer mentors, who themselves are recent graduates of Ivy League and top tier colleges. Each mentor brings with them the unique experiences that got them admitted to their top schools. Though students receive one primary mentor, Christopher explains that the twelve mentors are always available for each student. If a student’s project may benefit from a second mentor with a different expertise, that mentor will be brought on to collaborate. Student writing is often edited by two sets of eyes and senior college application work is always reviewed by two mentors. So, each student has a full team helping them succeed. Beyond College Consulting Command’s team of mentors spend time getting to know their students to provide an individualized mentoring experience. In a process Christopher calls “finding a hook,” mentors work with students to identify and develop their passions, which they are encouraged to explore in the classroom and community. They guide their students to focus and excel academically, boost their confidence, and excite them about potential lifelong passions. Work with students often includes helping them to pick courses and decide where to volunteer, research, or intern. They help students develop, their passions through summer programs, like researching their interests with professors, graduate students or postdoctoral fellows at local universities and attending programs tailored to their interests.

Mentors and students meet regularly, discussing big picture hopes and dreams, upcoming summer plans, and plan long-term standardized test schedules and college visits. They also discuss day to day matters like study habits and grades, the importance of time management, stress management, and a healthy balance of work and fun. One student Kevin, who asked not to use his last name, said of his Command experience, “My mentor coached me to improve my writing skills immensely & provided me with sincere emotional support during stressful periods. By far the best form of counseling I’ve had in my life!” In exploring their passions, students also work with Command’s full-service in-house marketing team, which includes designers and a web developer. This team helps students expand their projects by building a website, developing branding and social media strategy, and recruiting press for student accomplishments. The team has helped students develop websites, magazines, publications, brochures, and much more. A Formidable Team Command has grown since Christopher founded it in his Yale dorm room in 2015, and is now comprised of three partners and twelve mentors. Christopher met Wafa Muflahi when they were both students at Yale. She was a gifted writer and easy to talk to, so Christopher knew Wafa would put high school students at ease and asked her to come on board as his partner. In 2017, Christopher met Roberta Seiler, start-up consultant, and two became three. By then, Command found its headquarters in Midtown East, above the men’s Bergdorf Goodman on 5th Avenue. Command now occupies Jimmy Choo’s former headquarters, an 8,000 square foot office at 750 Lexington Avenue. At Command, there’s a mentor every student can relate and look up to. There’s a former US Open record holder and two-time Olympic Trials
competitor for the student athlete navigating the complex recruitment process, a medical journalpublished author with international experience in healthcare policy, infectious diseases, and drug development for the future doctor or scientist, an amici curia brief contributor of the Supreme Court case Obergefell v. Hodges for the ambitious writer or future lawyer, and Congressional Award Gold Medalists and Donald Kennedy Public Service Fellow for the avid philanthropist.
as well as Bachelor’s/Doctorate of Dental Studies (BS/DDS) programs. Command Creative™ offers guidance and individualized assistance to high school students interested in fiction, poetry, playwriting, screenwriting, or creative non-fiction. The program is catered to each specific student’s needs, from help developing ideas and editing portfolios, to writing query letters and applying for jobs in the industry of their choice, to getting published and winning competitions.
How Command Education Works Command Education only takes 24 students per grade level at any given time to ensure that students are getting the individualized attention they need. Presently, students can work with mentors in many different ways. Most commonly, they choose to work through hourly 1:1 mentoring or through a package that includes unlimited hours, meaning that they can meet with their mentors as frequently as they need. Such mentoring options are separated into various packages. Designed for high school freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, The Premier Roadmap Package™ is a 12-month package that includes extracurricular and leadership development, non-profit development, resume and cover letter assistance, standardized testing timeline, assistance with applications for contests and awards, and course selection. Services include feedback via videocall, text and email, edits and suggestions on essays and other documents. For seniors, Command offers the Premier Senior Package™ designed to take high school seniors through the college application process, from choosing the perfect schools to writing the most compelling college essays and acing the college alumni interviews.
In addition to these various packages, Command has developed a tutoring service. If a student is struggling with a class or with a standardized tests, their mentor will refer them to Command’s tutoring team. Though Command emphasizes passions and projects, they don’t underestimate the importance of excellent SAT or ACT scores, and the demonstration of expertise in a specific subject through high SAT II scores. Students will work with a team of tutors, receive individualized tutoring and improve their grades. Mirroring the team of mentors, students often have more than one specialized tutor: one for each specific SAT or ACT section, SAT Subject Test or class.
Command offers specialized options, too, like CommandMed™ and CommandCreative™. Command Med™ is a specialized program designed to offer individualized assistance to high school students interested in applying to combined Bachelor’s/Doctorate of Medicine (BS/MD) programs
Christopher believes his most successful students are those who start their work with mentors at a young age, as early as eighth or ninth grade. He explains a domino effect: students identify their passions early and explore them through classwork and extracurricular activities. Passions shift and change as students grow, allowing them to determine where they truly lie, and to think about their future ambitions. Long-term work with mentors allows students to excel in their passions over time. These are the students who make an impact in their schools and communities. Of course, many students begin their work with Command Education later in their high school careers. This just means mentors and students must accomplish a great deal in a shorter period of time.

THE 5-DAY APPLICATION BOOSTER® CAMP Many students begin their work with Command the summer before their senior years of high school in preparation for the college application process, attending Command’s week-long Application Booster® Camp. Students fly from all over the world to Command’s NYC headquarters to attend this program, which sells out every year.
introspection required for a successful application. David, who asked not to use his last name, was admitted to Harvard after his work with Command. He said, “The guidance I received at Camp writing my Harvard supplement helped me understand the nuance required in crafting a concise, authentic essay. Dan’s commitment to individualized instruction really helped me grow as a writer.”
At Application Booster® Camp, students work oneon-one with mentors to write their Common Application essays. The benefits of attending the camp are numerous; those who attend finish the Common Application personal statement—the most time consuming portion of college applications— before the start of their senior years. This allows students to focus on the remaining standardized tests they may have to take and earn high grades on their senior year courses, which they send to colleges that winter. Lastly, parents write that checking this off of the to-do list relieves stress on their end as well.
Success Stories Between individualized tutoring and 1:1 mentoring, the majority of Command’s students have gone on to achieve their dreams and so much more.
At the Application Booster® Camp, students receive continuous rounds of feedback daily from their mentors, allowing them to accomplish in a week what can take months to finish alone. One student, Amy, who preferred not to use her last name, said that “the best part of Camp was watching the transformation my essays went through to earn me acceptance to Dartmouth. My essay’s first drafts were plain and nondescript, but my instructors showed me what would catch the eye of an admission officer. At the end of Camp, I had become a much better writer.” She was admitted to Dartmouth later that year. Command’s team of experienced mentors is aware that the personal writing required for college essays can be difficult for students to approach. As such, they take care to walk students through the

One NYC-based student’s passions lay in environmental sciences and debate. In addition to studying for the SAT, she spent her summers between debate camps and a Black Rock Forest internship in upstate New York. In school, she spearheaded eco-friendly initiatives, raising money through a metal straw sale. Recognizing the importance of discussing issues she was passionate about, she founded a zine at her school with the aim to provide a platform for students to voice issues that were important to them, such as college, social issues and academic pressures. Command’s in-house designer collaborated with the student on both the zine logo and designed the zine itself. This student received an offer of admission from Dartmouth University.
process works — 94% of Command’s students are accepted to one or more of their top three schools. Parents are known to fork over $2,500/hr to work with Command Education’s Senior Mentors and up to $5,000/hr to work with the CEO, Christopher Rim, himself or his Partner, Wafa Muflahi. Yet despite the high price tag, families find the growth they see their students achieve worth every penny. Christopher shared the elated messages he has received from parents and students saved on his phone. “Selecting Christopher and his team to help my daughter apply to the perfect college has been one of the best investments I have made. I want to pass on the good news that my daughter will be joining Wharton. We are over the moon!” wrote the parent of one University of Pennsylvania admit. Command mentors often receive thrilled messages from their students. At the end of a Premier Roadmap Package®, students have completed countless hours of hard work with their mentors, and more often than not, it pays off. Another email to Christopher shared from the parent of a Stanford admit read, “We were and still are in shock. I honestly can’t thank you enough for everything you and your team did to support [our daughter]. Your guidance is what nailed it.” This is just one example of the many thrilled notes Christopher and his team receive.
Another student was fascinated by linguistics and philosophy. She spent her summers researching emotional intelligence and language with a Columbia professor. At school, she started a bilingual poetry magazine, for which Command’s in-house designer also completed the design work. She’s received a letter of admission from Columbia University.
Looking forward, Christopher and his team are looking to expand globally. Though they currently work with students from all around the globe, formal expansion into Hong Kong, Singapore, India, Dubai, and the United Kingdom are in the works.

nvestors, entrepreneurs, innovators, academics and media descended on Bermuda for the island’s first ever staging of TechBeach Retreat, which took place from October 17-18, 2019 during the island’s inaugural Tech Week. Dubbed Fin-Tech Innovation Island, the two-day conference was designed to promote and further cement Bermuda’s place as a leading global fin-tech hub. The event attracted approximately 200 participants from the US, the UK, Canada, Cayman Islands, The Bahamas, Panama and Trinidad and Tobago. Among those present were representatives from some of the world’s leading fintech and digital assets focused

organizations, including Circle, Goldman Sachs, Aon and Signature Bank. The list of world-class speakers and presenters included Kome Emuh, COO Securities Division Operations and Engineering at Goldman Sachs; Joe Siebert, CEO of Signature Bank; and Bermuda’s Premier, the Hon. E. David Burt. Following his insightful fireside chat with awardwinning Forbes journalist, John Koetsier, Premier Burt, commended Tech Beach’s efforts to create a more inclusive environment for the technology ecosystem throughout the Caribbean, and the world. “Having TechBeach be a part of Tech Week has been
absolutely amazing,” he said. “The diversity, the conversations, the energy that we’ve had on the island adds a new dimension to Tech Week. Companies are being built, relationships are being made and this is something that we really hope to encourage.” Premier Burt praised the efforts of co-founders, Kirk-Anthony Hamilton of Jamaica, and Kyle Maloney of Trinidad and Tobago, in the pursuit of their mission to ensure inclusivity in tech. He also applauded their passion for connecting people in small, misrepresented markets with TechBeach’s global network. The conference yielded many new business opportunities for Bermuda, an island with an
economy built on robust and rapid legislation. The Premier and his team made a decision in 2017 to focus intently on the digital revolution and to leverage the island’s strong reputation in the financial services space in order to attract this new realm of companies. These initiatives are proving successful with Bermuda emerging as a leading domicile for fintech companies searching for a strong but friendly regulatory environment. Thus far Circle, which is backed by Goldman Sachs and others, to the tune of over US$200 million, has opted to domicile on the island. Tech Beach veteran, Jeff Pulver, a co-founder of Vonage, announced on stage, that Canadian outfit Skrumble, a company for which he serves as the Vice Chairman, would likely be pursuing the same for its exchange in the near future. Also blockchain and cryptocurrency pioneer, Michael Terpin, intends to set up shop with a new company on the island as well. Additional noteworthy participants in this year’s inaugural FinTech Innovation Island included James Knox, Managing Director at insurance giant, Aon and the Hon. Wayne Caines, Minister of National Security for Bermuda, who along with the Premier, championed the cause for staging Tech Beach in Bermuda. Tech Beach Bermuda’s success was fueled by presenting sponsors Bermuda Business Development Authority, the Bermuda Tourism Authority and Fin Tech Bermuda alongside Walkers and Co, Appleby, Blockchain Triangle, the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation, Argo and PwC. About Tech Beach Retreat Tech Beach Retreat is a fast emerging and widely celebrated global community of tech entrepreneurs, investors, influencers, enthusiasts and innovators meeting under the idyllic backdrop of the Caribbean sun, sand and sea. KEN JEWELL
New York Magazine’s Leader in the Law By Bennett Marcus
W
ith divorce being an awful, emotionally intense and painful experience for all those involved, adding an arduous legal process to hardship only increases agony and maximizes stress. As one of America’s most resolute matrimonial lawyers—quoted extensively in the New York Times, Town & Country, New York Post, and The New York Law Journal—Attorney Ken Jewell operates Jewell Law, PLLC with a steadfast philosophy: to resolve matrimonial disputes efficiently to allow clients to move forward with a peace of mind.
seemed a natural fit. “It hits the hybrid of being both a psychologist as well as being an attorney to help people.” Jewell worked for another matrimonial practitioner for a short period, but quickly realized that with years of legal research experience already under his belt, he could bring in business and help people in a way that he considered more appropriate. He opened Jewell Law in 2003.
Privacy is Paramount At Jewell Law, staff members refer to clients only by first name to maintain anonymity. Appointments are staggered and clients are immediately ushered to a private office. Former clients include high-profile fashion models, performing artists, owners of renown business establishments, real estate moguls and other well-established professionals and business owners. As Little Pain as Possible “It’s only the two parties that are in the room and there’s no way of being able to prove what’s really happening unless someone shows up with bruises.” Given that background, he advises getting the divorce done smartly and sooner rather than later. “The question is always whether the client wants to be happy or be right.” It is with this philosophy that highly contested cases where the parties are fighting over every little thing might be in Jewell’s office for only two years. “It’s figuring out what is driving the fight so that, once that is addressed, the case takes far less time to get done than it would with other matrimonial firms.” Jewell Law “We pride ourselves on getting the job done, doing what’s necessary and expediting clients through the process instead of having their cases drag on unresolved,” says Jewell. “A happy client is a client who’s got whatever they need done,” he adds. “So, if they’re looking to get divorced, they want to get divorced. They don’t want to go through years and years of agony; they want to get the job done sooner rather than later.” Jewell tries to get his clients to see divorce proceedings in an optimistic light, as a way to move on from an unhappy situation. One of the biggest problems in matrimonial law is that everybody wants justice, Jewell explains, but marriage is one of the closest relationships anybody can have. It’s not the kind of relationship a business where justice is always available. It’s against that backdrop that Jewell encourages clients to be very selective when choosing to be right because being happy in those instances may be a hard feat indeed.
Travel & Family “I have a wonderful wife and two amazing kids, and they’re everything to me,” says Jewell. Travel is his favorite way of shaking off stress. “We do a lot of traveling, . That’s the way that I relax.”
Why Matrimonial Law? Before attending law school, Jewell spent ten years as a Supreme Court librarian in Nassau County, helping judges and lawyers with research. He was torn between becoming a psychologist or an attorney. Matrimonial law

PETER THOMAS ROTH Waters Flow Deep By Bennett Marcus
W
ith a strong family heritage of skin care, Peter Thomas Roth was predestined to enter the business; his family owned and operated two spa resorts in Hungary during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which Roth drew inspiration from when he launched his clinical skin care company in 1993. Only the soothing, reparative, and anti-aging properties of the mineral-rich Hungarian thermal spring waters— the same ones that flowed his family’s spa resorts— would suffice for Roth’s innovative cutting-edge products. Skin-product Junkie While working in his father’s jewelry factory after graduating from Wharton, Roth spent evenings toying with skincare formulas, as he had always been plagued with acne and oily skin problems. “If you have issues with your skin you totally are a skin-product junkie, because it’s on the top of the list,” Roth says. “I was always going to the dermatologist, I was always getting facials, I had very active acne, so I just dived into it.” It made for long days, and was like working two jobs at once.” Peter Thomas Roth Clinical Skin Care In 1993, he launched Peter Thomas Roth Clinical Skin Care, which produces all its anti-aging and anti-acne products using the highest quality ingredients at its own facilities in the U.S. “I started

with other people making the products and I wasn’t getting what I wanted,” Roth says. “So, we opened our own lab, manufacturing facility, and distribution center.” Spas, Sephora, QVC, & Ultra The cosmetic line quickly became popular at day spas, followed by luxury spa hotels, some owned by Marriott. “About 20 years ago, this guy said, ‘We’re opening up all these stores in the United States, it’s going to be called Sephora, and we want your brand,’” Roth says. They took all the products. “So we’ve been in every Sephora in the United States, all doors, from the beginning, and still are.” The mega retailer also carries Peter Thomas Roth products in its stores in Canada, Mexico, Southeast Asia, and China, and will soon be in Sephora outlets in Brazil. Later, QVC came along, as did the cosmetics chain Ultra. Instructional labels Roth was an innovator in labeling, the first to include information on what each product is for on each bottle and tube, in addition to listing the ingredients. “Before, most people relied on being sold to at a department store, where a person told you what to do,” he explains. “Which is really nice, except I never remembered what they told me. So, I need to have it on the bottle.” This is now common practice throughout the industry.
Ribbon & Reed Collection While running his ever-growing company, Roth spent his spare time at his father’s factory, dabbling in jewelry design. “Some people like to play golf or tennis, or play cards, I don’t, so jewelry was my hobby.” His Ribbon & Reed collection, inspired by the Metropolitan Museum of art, where he spent many youthful hours, and where his father’s studio makes all the jewelry reproductions, debuted on QVC in 2016. In gold and silver, the line consists of classic, simple, modern pieces for women and men that will still look good in 20 years. “That was the goal, to just do clean and modern with a little kick of the past,” says Roth. “It’s for everybody. If someone gets it as a present as a teenager, they can still wear it in their 20s and 30s, and if someone is over 50, it looks great. It’s a nice, pretty, solid design. It took a long time to do that.” New Products for 2020 Peter Thomas Roth Clinical Skin Care has launched a variety of new products that will keep you looking your best into the new year. Some of these products include the Peter Thomas Roth PRO Strength line which harness the power of lactic acid, retinol and Phytic Acid and a breakthrough Vital-E™ Microbiome Age Defense Cream proven to repair the skin’s barrier against environmental damage. peterthomasroth.com

MICHAEL JACCARINO ESQ.
By Bennett Marcus Photographed By Neil Tandy
M
ichael Jaccarino joined Aidala, Bertuna & Kamins in 2013, working with founder Arthur Aidala in defending individuals charged with high stakes criminal cases - including white collar crimes such as securities fraud, identity theft, money laundering and commercial bribery, as well as all kinds of violent and narcotics related offenses, including shootings, robberies, firearms possession, murder, and racketeering. He is a distinguished defender and trial lawyer. Over the last several years, he has secured a string of acquittals for clients in various types of cases and jury trials all over the city. Jaccarino started his career as a prosecutor in the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office. “That job prepared me for any possible courtroom situation,” he says. “It helped me to become a successful trial lawyer. I’m comfortable in any courtroom on any kind of case. Whether it is in front of a judge or jury, my courtroom advocacy has helped client after client achieve unparalleled results. Beginning my career as a prosecutor allowed me to hone my craft in the courtroom, and I now use those skills as a criminal defense attorney.” This courtroom trial background, Jaccarino adds, is what makes Aidala, Bertuna & Kamins special. “Everyone at our firm is the real deal. Our attorneys are well known thorougout the state, and they command respect in every courtroom. They are known as some of the best lawyers in the field. This confidence, combined with the skills

to back it up, allows us to get those who we defend out of difficult situations.” Jaccarino functions as Arthur Aidala’s righthand on every case, working behind the scenes while Aidala is often the public face. “I’m the one in the trenches, in the criminal courthouses of this city every day of the week, figuring out how we are going to be successful with each one of our cases and how we are going to help each one of our clients.” Jaccarino’s philosophy stems from his strong belief that everyone deserves a second chance, and that “most people should not necessarily have to suffer for the rest of their life for one mistake.” He embraces the philosophy that a defense attorney’s job is to zealously defend – at all costs. “If I don’t do that, I’m not doing my job,” he says. 18b Panel attorney Jaccarino has been assigned by the city of New York to the 18b Panel, a group of private lawyers who defend certain people who cannot afford an attorney but are unable to use a public defender for various reasons. “I often get a called by judges to take difficult cases to trial.” New baby, music lover Jaccarino loves music and has recently taken up drumming, saying that he has no musical background and is loving the challenge of learning a discipline that is completely different from the law. However, at the moment, all of his spare time is being devoted to his 7-month-old daughter.

FASHION ART
PILOT CORPORATION
The “Seven Japanese Gods of Good Fortune” Collection, & “Fuji” & “Meiji- Maru” Fountain Pens By w. a. muller
I
n commemoration of our milestone 100th anniversary, Pilot Corporation has assembled the combined skills of the acclaimed Maki-e master artisans’ group, KOKKOKAI, to create truly exceptional special edition items: The “Seven Japanese Gods of Good Fortune” collection of fountain pens and inks, as well as “Fuji” and “Meiji-Maru” fountain pens. A number of traditional and advanced Maki-e (lacquer sprinkled with gold and silver) techniques, including Taka Maki-e, Togidashi Maki-e, Chinkin, and Shishiai Togidashi Maki-e, were employed in the creation of these commemorative fountain pens and accessories, making each one a true masterpiece. About the “Seven Japanese Gods of Good Fortune” Collection Only 25 of the limited-edition sets have been produced worldwide, and each one is a work of art created by master artisans utilizing the Taka Maki-e (raised
104 | resident.com
Maki-e) technique, among others. The collection is presented in an exceptionally beautiful gift box featuring two intricate symbolic designs, a treasure ship in Taka Maki-e, and Mt. Fuji and ocean waves depicted in Chinkin (gold inlay). The Mt. Fuji and treasure ship motifs depicted on the lacquer gift box are inspired by Pilot’s history and founding. Mt Fuji is reflected in the original company slogan: “What Fuji is to mountains, Pilot is to fountain pens.” And, apart from being a recognized symbol of good luck, the treasure ship is an allusion to our two founders: Ryosuke Namiki and Masao Wada, who were seamen. Their connection to the sea, as well as the idea of guiding the course of a ship, inspired our company name, Pilot. Like a ship laden with many treasures, Pilot’s many customers and business partners have allowed us to successfully navigate and grow, both in terms of team members and innovative technologies, over the course of the
last 100 years, and will be just as instrumental as we continue our voyage toward the next 100 years. Inside the gift box are seven, vest-type clipless fountain pens, each featuring one of the Seven Gods depicted in Taka-Maki-e. Also included in the collection are seven limited edition inks - each one tailored to one of the Seven Gods - and a Togidashi Maki-e (burnished Maki-e) pen tray featuring a crane and turtle, both of which are well-known symbols of longevity. Each fountain pen in the collection features the image and story of each of the Seven Gods – Ebisu (happiness and prosperity), Daikoku-ten (wealth and prosperity), Bishamon-ten (financial good fortune and competitive advantage), Benzai-ten (wisdom), Fuku-roku-ju (personal virtue), Juro-jin (longevity) and Hotei-son (good fortune.) The clipless vest-type fountain pen, which has a silk tassel attached
to the top of the cap, was a style popular during the early Showa period (1926–1989 A.D.). Each fountain pen includes an 18 karat gold nib inscribed with the words“100th Anniversary” and an image of Mt. Fuji. Japan’s highest peak, Mt. Fuji, is an enduring and revered symbol of Japanese culture. Registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 2013, it’s majestic landscape and picturesque beauty have captivated thousands within Japan, and around the world. When written with different Kanji or Chinese characters, the word “Fuji” can have various auspicious meanings, including “immortality,” “eternal longevity,” or even “unparalleled.” These associations, along with its status as Japan’s highest peak, have helped to make Mt. Fuji an important cultural icon, as well as a symbol of high goals, strong ideals and success. Mt. Fuji was also a part of our original slogan, which encapsulated our founder’s wish for Pilot to be recognized as a high-quality fountain pen manufacturer all over the world. Based on this aspiration, Mt. Fuji was selected as one of the motifs to commemorate our 100th anniversary. For the special edition commemorative “Fuji” fountain pen, of which only 100 were produced, we utilized
Maki-e techniques that our master artisans have honed throughout our long history. The barrel depicts a blanket of snow atop Mt. Fuji created with the Rendaku (eggshell) technique, alongside pine trees on the mountain’s landscape, symbols of longevity. The entire pen was then given a distinguished finish with Shishiai Togidashi Maki-e (combined raised and burnished Maki-e), a highly sophisticated process, requiring strong expertise. The “Meiji-Maru” was a real sailing ship that counted the Emperor Meiji (1852–1912 A.D.) among her passengers before becoming a training vessel. It was also the ship on which our company’s founders, Ryosuke Namiki and Masao Wada, trained with the merchant marine. The first ship designated as an important national cultural icon, the Meiji-Maru is now on display at the Etchujima Campus of the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, of which our founders are alumni. From there, the ship watches over today’s young sailors. The expert who safely guides many vessels at the head of a convoy at sea is called a “pilot”. Our company was given the name “Pilot” with the hopes that it would help guide the course of the industry. The exceptional “Meiji-Maru” commemorative fountain pen, of which only 800 were produced,
features the sea and sky in vibrant blue lacquers, and the sails of the “Meiji-Maru” powerfully raised against the backdrop of Mt. Fuji, depicted in exquisite Taka Maki-e, as the gallant figure sails towards her next 100-year voyage. The KOKKOAI artisans’ group, which formed in 1931, was built around the skills and teachings of the late “national treasure” and renowned authority on Maki-e artistry, Gonroku Matsuda (1896-1986). Artisans from both inside and outside the company make up this highly specialized group, who continue to create lacquer-based artwork in Matsuda’s tradition today. The commemorative “Seven Japanese Gods of Good Fortune” collection was brought to fruition by 11 highly-skilled Maki-e, Chinkin and lacquer artists, who have mastered the artform and honed these sophisticated techniques through years of practice. Seven Gods: 25 sets created; 4 available in United States at $48,000 each Fuji: 100 pens created; 14 available in the United States at $9,600 each “Meiji-Maru:” 800 pens created; 81 available in the United States at $1,600 each. pilot-namiki.com

ASHLIE ATKINSON Becoming An A-lister & A Brooklynite
By Lauren Bens Photographed By Emily Assiran
Y
ou might recognize her from her standout role in the Oscar nominated biopic drama BlacKKKlansman, where she played Connie Kendrickson, a racist housewife turned terrorist, as well as in USA Network’s award-winning drama series Mr. Robot, opposite Rami Malek and Christian Slater, but Ashlie Atkinson, who has been in numerous films and theatre productions, is just getting started! After reuniting with Spike Lee in BlacKKKlansman (he had previously directed her in 2006’s Inside Man) Ashlie found herself on the A-list and was recently seen in Netflix’s Juanita. The only thing she might love more than acting, is living in her adopted hometown of Brooklyn! Ashlie, who is rebooting her career into high gear, explained that she loves playing Janice, her character on Mr. Robot, because she is so joyful – in all the wrong ways! “I have always loved villains that have real joy when things are going their way — I mean, they’re getting their way and wreaking havoc, of COURSE they’re happy! It’s why I always loved Jack Nicholson’s Joker as a kid; he has a childish glee in destroying everything. It’s only when his plans aren’t working out that you really see him be menacing.” Growing up in Little Rock, Arkansas, Ashlie knew that she loved acting, though she had her doubts about starring on the big screen. “I was always doing school plays and children’s theatre, but I didn’t think it was a particularly ethical use of a life — and I think part of *that* perception was that I thought I would just immediately become a star, which is obviously what happens when a fat teen from Arkansas wants to be an actor, duhhhhh. So, I went to Barnard College here in NY to be something else, something that could change the world! The only problem was, I wasn’t really good at anything else. And I finally got kicked out of there and ended up back in Arkansas at Hendrix College, where the faculty and my peers were committed to the idea that a life in the service of art is a good life, a life that contributes to the community. And my mentor at Hendrix suggested I go back to New York to go to the Neighborhood Playhouse for actor training. So, I did. And that was where I learned everything.”
106 | resident.com
Appearing in the buzzworthy movie Blackkklansman last year definitely helped bring her into the limelight. While she expected the movie to be major – Spike Lee and Adam Driver were involved – she didn’t expect to be any part of that buzz. “I had some things I was really trying to say about “nice” white women who prop up the white patriarchy while being fatally dangerous to black people. And I know Spike wanted to talk about those things. I was thrilled to be able to have that conversation on a larger stage. And as far as preparation goes, the real challenge — and I know this is super messed up — was to find things I get as excited about as Connie gets about harming or killing black people. It’s so insane, her point of view, that it’s impossible to find a way where I can twist things to where I agree with her. So instead, I have to find a thing I can substitute for that so I can pretend in my head that that’s what we’re talking about. Otherwise, I’d never be able to give her the terrible joy she requires. Like, in the
bedroom scene? I’m literally thinking about buying a house. Like we’ve talked about it for so long. And now we’re doing it! Is it a mistake? Once we do it, we can’t take it back!” While some of her upcoming projects are currently a secret, this witty actress did spill the beans about a biopic she’s signed on to, as well as a jukebox musical she’s writing and a web series she’s doing with her best friend, Jennifer Laine Williams. What she definitely won’t tell you, however, is where she lives in South Brooklyn, where she’s lived since 2004. “I don’t say more because I hope nobody moves to my neighborhood — the rent is still reasonable! I love this city so much, I have never felt like I belonged anywhere as much as here. And I’m not saying that there aren’t bad days here, because WHOA can you have a bad, bad day here. And I recognize that as a function of my privilege, my bad days are not as bad as a lot of people’s. But
there’s always the possibility that you will turn from the street onto the avenue and someone or something will be there that changes your entire life — a lover, an opportunity, a chance. I think, deep in their hearts, New Yorkers know their city as a chaotic goddess, and every now and again out of the whirlwind, she tosses you a gift.” Additional film credits for Ashlie include: Martin Scorsese’s and Paramount Pictures’ Oscar-nominated drama, “The Wolf of Wall Street,” Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures’ “Bridge of Spies,” IFC Films’ and Kelly Reichardt’s “Certain Women,” Magnolia Pictures’ “Compliance” and Universal Pictures’ “Inside Man.” Makeup: Tommy Napoli Hair: Ben Martin Stylist: Lisa Tinglum
