EDITOR’S NOTE
S
ummer is already in full swing, and I am already settling in as your new editor-in-chief, after graciously being handed the reins by former editor, Hillary Latos, who will still be an integral part of our team as she expands our luxury partnerships. After having written everything from travel stories to celebrity cover stories for Resident, I am so thrilled to be taking on this role – and taking you all along for the journey with me! As Mark Twain once famously said, “Find a job you enjoy doing and you will never work a day in your life,” though I must say this feels like more of a calling than a job. When I first found my “calling,” I was still in high school, where I had my own column in an equestrian magazine, and never could have imagined I would one day become editor-in-chief of a real magazine – especially the kind you can still hold in your hands! I look forward to bringing you more of what we have become known for, including fashionable fashion spreads, exotic travel stories, celebrity profiles, and of course, breaking social scene news! We also spoke with CNN anchor Don Lemon this month, who shares how he has kept his place in primetime while remaining in the prime of his life. Whenever he has encountered barriers, Lemon has broken them down, and has built a long and successful career in broadcasting. Lemon, a proud Harlem resident, shares his personal and professional highs, and why he is more determined than ever to do what he does best - spread the news. His inspiring story is one that will motivate anyone, regardless of political beliefs. Whatever your summer plans, enjoy the simplicity and sweetness of this always seemingly short-lived season. Within our pages you’ll find the best wines to up your adventurous entertaining ante, our favorite stylish and secluded spots in Chile, from Santiago to a place high in the northern desert of the country, and highlight some great Hamptons events. I am so excited to be a part of the Resident team and would love to hear from you. Wishing you a happy, healthy and safe Independence Day! IG @allthefamenoneofthefortune

HAIR REPAIR BAR Repair First, Style Second By w. a. muller What differentiates Hair Repair Bar from other hair salons? At Hair Repair Bar by Giojé™ hair health comes first, creating beautiful, stylish looks while restoring and resuscitating the hair from root-to-tip. A full-service hair salon, we feature stylists trained to identify distressed hair and scalp conditions and repair them with organic, naturally invigorating solutions. Using an exclusively curated selection of organic essential oil blends, steam moisturizing technology, heat-safe equipment, and the Giojé natural keratin product line, Hair Repair Bar by Giojé personalizes hair health and styling solutions for all hair types.
How do you diagnose people’s hair? What’s the process? Essential Oils have been used to treat a variety of hair and scalp conditions since ancient times. Their restorative properties come from their many vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that are unique to each essential oil type. Hair or scalp repair therapy involves the application of organic essential oils to the hair or scalp and activating their restorative properties, nutrients, and minerals under steam, which infuses moisture and allows the oils to penetrate each hair strand and follicle. The hair and scalp are then washed using Giojé’s professional sulfatefree keratin line shampoo and conditioner, leaving the hair silky smooth, soft, and manageable. Finally, a heat safe blow dry and style and you are on your way to healthier, amazing hair.
How should people prep for summer humidity? For the really muggy days, prepare to wear your hair up. Check your drawer for stylish yet hair safe accessories like pins and soft elastics that won’t pull relentlessly. If you prefer to wear your hair down, use our light weight Keratin Gloss Serum that will keep your hair protected from the sun and control the fly-aways. Hats are great for protecting the hair and scalp from sun damage - just make sure they are breathable. hairrepairbar.com

TOM MILANA JR. On a Mission with Man Cave Health By Julie Sagoskin
F
rom trying to get men to see their doctor to making them feel comfortable with his Man Cave Health concept, a place where men battling prostate cancer can receive care and support amidst sports memorabilia, a flat-screened television and a coffee and tea bar, Tom Milana Jr. is revolutionizing the healthcare experience for men and helping them realize the importance of early detection. After being diagnosed with prostate cancer a little over three years ago at the age of 48, Milana, who is married with five daughters, was cured after undergoing surgery. While he had donated to numerous charities over the years, Milana knew that his family was going to have a new mission and have since raised funds and awareness though The Milana Family Foundation. “After going through the process myself, I knew we had to help get men to go to the doctor and the healthcare profession

doesn’t do anything to make the experience more enjoyable.” Aside from providing men who are undergoing treatment with a more relaxed environment complete with memorabilia from local sports teams, leather seating and masculine décor, Man Cave Health combines emotional support with educational resources. Here, men are surrounded by a team of medical professionals, friends and advocates who are ready to help them take control of their healthcare journey so that they can come out stronger and healthier than ever. It’s time to say goodbye to sterile clinical settings and step into the comfortable space envisioned by Milana. “Man Cave health is two-fold,” explained Milana. “The Man Cave itself is meant to provide men and their spouses with a better experience when they go to the doctor. It’s male friendly, it’s not your
traditional waiting room. You can watch television, work on your tablet and look at some of the best sports memorabilia in the business. Women have a great support system and spa-like facilities, but men never had anything like that. The environment we created is cool, but our main mission is to get men to go to the doctor. Every year, 30,000 men die from prostate cancer because they don’t know they have it. Early detection is the key to a lot of diseases, but especially when it comes to prostate cancer because it’s so curable.” Through his life-saving efforts, Milana wants to make sure that men realize the importance of getting an annual exam and remain as comfortable as possible while receiving the best care in his sports themed spaces. mancavehealth.org

LONGINES
Masters of the World’s Most Classic Timepieces By Julie Sagoskin
I
f you don’t already have a Longines, a timeless watch brand known for its elegance and longevity, you will definitely be left longing for one. Longines, whose watches are both classic and contemporary, is known for its commitment to the equestrian sport of show jumping and presented the Longines Masters of New York in April. After all, only Longines is trusted to keep show-jumping times—and to keep you on time!
30 | resident.com
Longines watches are both aspirational and attainable, according to Matthieu Baumgartner, Longines Marketing Vice President, who said that Longines was a part of his life even before he started working for the brand. “This is the watch I got when I graduated. In our region, it is really the brand that people dream to have. There are many people within this company who are local, and for us, this is a watch brand, but this is also a factory, this is a company, this is an employer,
and this is a familiar name when you are local. And, interestingly enough, when we travel to China, for example, we feel the same. Longines has an excellent price positioning in the $1,000 to $3,000 price bracket. This is really a brand that expresses a certain form of luxury but still at a very affordable price.” Longines, which is based in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, was founded back in 1832, and is
by Georgina Bloomberg and Event Founder Christophe Ameeuw at Bloomberg Philanthropies in New York City. The second-annual Longines Masters of New York ran from April 25th through 28th at NYCB LIVE, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, as the third leg of the Longines Masters Series, following stops in Paris and Hong Kong. While Longines is most often associated with equine sports and horse racing—they are now the title partner of the 2019 Longines FEI European Championships—they also have partnerships in the world of Alpine skiing. “We are lucky enough to have Alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin as a Longines ambassador. At only 24, she’s already a legend in her sport, and apart from that, she is an outstanding ambassador for us.” Due to their varied collection of both trendy and traditional timepieces, Matthieu explained there is something fun and functional for everyone. “Longines has a wide range of products, so whether you like sport watches or elegant watches, there is probably a watch for you in our assortment, and that also goes for different age groups. We have ones that can be appealing for women 60-plus, and we also have watches such as the HydroConquest, or pieces from our Heritage Collection, that are extremely appealing to younger audiences.”
still the most beloved brand amongst Swiss locals. Baumgartner said that it’s “really not only a brand but a company that is dear to our hearts and that really belongs to the history of this region. I think that for those working with Longines, you feel proud that this brand has become one of the leading Swiss watch brands in the world.” This classic watch company also stays true to its values of tradition, elegance and performance. From the iconic Longines Masters Collection to their more feminine styles, as well as the Longines Sports Collection including the HydroConquest, Longines look sleek and stylish on both men and women. With a Longines, you’ll be trendy, and more importantly, on time!
Longines has had a longstanding partnership with equestrian disciplines, a unique sport where both men and women compete together. In fact, Longines was being used around racetracks as early as 1881. Matthieu explained that “Longines has provided timekeeping for show-jumping events since the twenty-first century and has been totally committed to this sport throughout history. This was a very natural fit for Longines because we had become the official partner of the most prestigious equestrian sports events. We have really a strong and long-lasting commitment to this discipline.” The Longines Masters of New York officially kicked off during the Riders Masters Cup team draw party on Wednesday, April 24, hosted
Longines always aligns itself with sports and star athletes who share their values, both on and off the show ring or the ski slopes. “We want to be associated with the highest level of sports. We also have a geographic approach when it comes to choosing the markets we work with. Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi, who are now famous legends, are also well-known for their charity activities with the Agassi Foundation for Education. Their values and the tremendous work they do with charities is a very good reason for Longines to work with them, to support them and to support their projects. We also have the Golden Hat Foundation of Kate Winslet.” From partnering with high-end sporting events to providing panache timepieces that can be passed on to future generations, Longines is known for its longevity. After all, this high-quality Swiss brand is bringing their style and sportsmanship ideals to those of all ages! longines.com

TRIUMPH OF EUROPE An Iconic Lingerie Brand By w. a. muller
F
or over 130 years, Triumph has been known as the “maker of lingerie.” Remaining a family-owned business all these years, Triumph is trusted by women all around the world to make high-quality lingerie that they trust and
love.
Providing the perfect fit and undeniable comfort is just as important to Triumph as considering how their products make women feel — inside and out. Their selection serves both a functional and stylish purpose, but more importantly, it helps to elicit a powerful sense of confidence. Since its beginning, Triumph has created unprecedented innovations in the industry that were the first of its kind – many of which are now features most women could not imagine living without. These include elastic straps, molded cups, sports bras and, most recently, minimizer bras. Triumph’s current Summer 2019 collection draws inspiration from the brand’s founding days, paired with elements of nature and time. Looking back and highlighting some of their most unique and special elements from their origin, Triumph rediscovered these key details or “treasures,” and has reinvented them in ways that perfectly suit the modern woman’s needs. Moving away from heavily padded bras and hefty foam cups, the Summer 2019 collection celebrates the diversity of various body-types with lighter, softer styles that embrace one’s natural breast shape, while still prioritizing fit and style. To ensure the most comfortable fit, this collection features seamless bras, bralettes, and briefs manufactured with a 3D stretch fabric that elevates comfort and well-being to the highest standard. Color plays an essential role in Triumph’s design process every season and for Summer 2019, hints of tranquil blue paired with feminine pink hues, add an elegant touch to the brand’s most coveted styles. The pink, in particular, was chosen as a way to embrace the new movement of femininity by redefining the color as an all-embracing tone. Aside from adding these blue and pink shades to refresh classic styles, this season also unveils new collections, such as Triumph’s Contour Sensation series. DON LEMON Primetime CNN Anchor in his Prime By julie sagoskin Photographed By Udo Spreitzenbarth
W
hen life gives Don Lemon lemons, he makes lemonade – at least out of his highly rated show on CNN! This award-winning anchor, who hosts CNN Tonight with Don Lemon and is a correspondent across the network, has taken over primetime in the prime of his life.
since! From reporting on-the-scene stories to interviewing politicians from both sides, as well as those with humorous, heartwarming and heavy stories to tell, Lemon has won a place in the people’s hearts for his honest reporting, which according to Don, is the most rewarding part of his role as a reporter.
Lemon joined the CNN family in 2006, and he has continued to bring “real news” to the nation ever
Lemon, one of the most lovable news anchors on the air, has indeed reached a broad audience over
the years, and he’s broken down many barriers. “I saw this woman on television who looked like my family, and growing up, there weren’t many role models on television who represented people like me,” said Lemon. “She was a local news anchor and I said, that’s what I want be, and the rest is history.” Don is making history himself now while informing the public of the most pertinent stories of the day, with his perfectly dimpled smile, of course.

Don has always been driven and dedicated, which is why he remained determined to succeed, even after his journalism teacher at Louisiana State University told him he wouldn’t make it, prompting him to move to New York. This ambitious anchor soon became a self-proclaimed “news gypsy,” working around the country. After starting out in New York City as a trainee in the newsroom and building his resume tape, Don bounced around from Birmingham, to St. Louis, Philadelphia, Chicago and Atlanta, with a few stops in New York in between, before finally settling in the Big Apple for good. He eventually enrolled in Brooklyn College, which he said “taught me a lot about diversity.” After appearing on-air in the afternoons, this number one newsman became the primetime anchor on the weekends before filling in for Erin Burnett, who was on maternity leave at the time. From there, he anchored in primetime, and now cable wouldn’t be the same without his candor and calm demeanor. “I’ve always wanted to know what’s behind things, and what the truth is or was, and that’s what motivates me to do my job. I want to be able to inform the American public everyday and to give them the truth and that’s never been more important that it is in this moment, so that’s my motivation every day, and I won’t stop. People around the world watch, and they know what the reality really is, and the truth is my motivator—truth and facts.”

He might be from Louisiana, but this Southern boy, who has made Harlem his home, is really a city kid at heart. “I love New York City. It’s tough, but there are very few places I think I would live and none I would rather live in as much as New York City. I love living here. I live uptown in Harlem. I moved to Harlem even before CNN moved me back to New York. I bought a place here because I thought it was beautiful. It was in the middle of a renaissance; there’s so much history here. You can see the sky, the avenues are bigger, the streets are bigger. There are restaurants, clubs and new businesses and coffee shops opening, so I love it up here. It’s quiet, and I feel like I’m not right in the middle of the chaos of midtown or downtown, so I moved here for that, especially for the history and what it means for African Americans. I’m in Central Harlem, and it’s really amazing. If you look at what Columbia is
38 | resident.com
doing here as well, they’ve invested a lot in Harlem, and it’s really beautiful here.” These might be challenging times, but Lemon always takes the lead when it comes to dispensing the most crucial and candid headlines. “My job hasn’t changed that much, but I do have an even stronger commitment to the business, and it’s important that I get the stories right and that I inform the public. I have to do a lot of fact-checking in real time, and I have to make sure people know we have a shared sense of reality, so I have a bigger commitment to it. The truth does matter and facts do matter, even when people would like you to believe otherwise. My work schedule is a lot more intense. I do two hours now. Most people do an hour in primetime. It’s tough, but I’m a soldier!”
Don, who takes his fact-checking duties seriously, loves to hear from his diehard fans, and he is always ready to take on the truth! “It is rewarding because I know people do believe in journalists and they do trust us, no matter how much negativity or criticism we get. More people come up to me on the street and say, ‘Thank you for looking out for us and for keeping us informed,’ and they get what’s happening. They get that journalism is under attack and they support it, and I really appreciate that.” This night owl, who gets up around 10 or 11 in the morning, loves to take a nap in order to stay on top at the network, and he has had many memorable and meaningful moments on the air. “One of my favorite stories I did was about a guy who calls himself a country boy, but says not all country boys are homophobes, and he put a giant rainbow flag

on the back of a tailgate truck in Oklahoma, which I thought was cool. We also have this series called Champions for Change, and we talk about people’s stories that we’ve featured, and mine was a program called Oliver Scholars, which helps black and Latino kids with getting into primary or secondary schools and then into Ivy League colleges. Any time I can do a story like that is great, especially in the environment we’re in now with all the negativity and division. I also got to shoot a couple promos for an original series where I got to pretend I was John Travolta from Saturday Night Fever walking down the street with my black pants and my chest out, so that was pretty cool.” He might be busy trying to save the world from un-factual facts, but Lemon always finds time to give back when he can. After all, he’s all about standing up and speaking out for what – and whom – he believes in. Aside from doing a story on Oliver
Scholars on CNN, Don became involved with the organization himself after being honored by them at their dinner gala. He eventually joined their board and now volunteers at their center and speaks to kids at school whenever possible. He also served as the emcee for the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation’s “Ladies Who Lunch for a Cure,” which was hosted at a private Upper East Side residence, and he tries to help out with the causes he believes in, despite his busy, non-stop schedule. While he loves his primetime spot, Don enjoys breaking away from the breaking news cycle in the summer and retreating to his home in Sag Harbor with his fiancé, Tim Malone, a broker at Corcoran whom he got engaged to in April. “I love spending time with my fiancée and my two dogs. We try to get away to Long Island as much as possible. I love spending time with friends at the beach and just having a normal, everyday life rather than being
inundated with the news cycle. I don’t really have any summer plans except I want my family to come up and spend time with me. Long Island has some of the most beautiful water and sites, and in the summer, it’s really spectacular. I love hosting them; it’s a place we can all be together and don’t have to worry about traveling, and it’s something I feel fortunate to have.” While they are still figuring out where and when they are going to tie the knot, Lemon and the love of his life are most likely going to make things official in the spring or summer of next year in either New York, New Orleans or on Long island – or they might just go to City Hall. No matter where they wind up, they are ready to wind up together forever! Where do you go after primetime? Well, the way things are looking for Lemon, he is going to remain on primetime and in his own prime for a long time!

LULU KITCHEN AND BAR Love at First Bite By Julie Sagoskin Photo by Doug Young
Y
ou will fall in love at first bite when you dig your fork into the freshly prepared fish and other flame-grilled specialties at Lulu Kitchen and Bar in Sag Harbor. Chef Philippe Corbet, who joined the Montauk Asset Holdings team in 2016, launched Lulu Kitchen and Bar, which is now in its very successful third season, with a menu built around a custom wood-fired grill. The Hamptons might be known as a summer spot, but Lulu serves up lunch and dinner seven days a week, year-round, so you don’t have to long for Lulu’s delectable dishes once the season comes to an end! With summer in full swing, Chef Corbet explains, “Everything is flourishing this season, the fruits and the vegetables, so it’s very exciting, and we simplified the menu. It’s so busy around here now, so we’re going to be bringing out more specials and more seafood. We’re having fun with the menu and trying to be authentic with what our surroundings are here. I’ve been on Long Island for 18 years, and I’ve really seen the Hamptons grow. There are more farms, the products are great and the prices are getting better.” Corbet, a culinary genius who has created a menu full of fresh and local products, trained in France, including in Michelin-star-rated restaurants, before bringing his creative concepts to Long Island’s most

sophisticated spots. After joining Montauk Asset Holdings, he opened up the kitchen at Arbor in Montauk, and now he serves his loyal clientele at Lulu Kitchen and Bar with his wood-burning cuisine as well as at Duryea’s Lobster Deck in Montauk. “I started cooking in France in 1994, went to school for four years and worked in numerous Michelinstar-rated restaurants. When I came to America, I fell in love with the Hamptons, and then I wanted to experience the New York City vibe. As a chef, I think this location is very important; it’s the capital of the culinary world, there are so many different cooking styles and the city is just incredible. I did a year at Bouley and then came back to Long Island and got lucky. I met Steven Jauffrineau, the managing director of the group. I worked with him, and at the end of that summer, he offered me the position. I said I wanted a wood-fire grill, which I think is very special. It’s very flavorful but very raw and intense, and combined with the vegetables and seafood we have around here, the grill in the summer is the best. We are starting to have farms with meat and ducks, so it’s even better. We’re now in our third season, and they wanted to keep me around and offered me a partnership I couldn’t refuse; it was perfect for me.” Summer might be great grilling season, but Lulu
Kitchen and Bar is just as delightful in the dreary winter months. “When we first opened the doors here, we felt that it was a very happy place. It feels like we’ve been open for 20 years; it has all the feelings of comfort, especially with the wood-fire grill. My favorite time to be in the restaurant is in the winter. I love the smell of the fireplace and the cozy flame.” This inventive chef, who loves playing with flavors, earning him a large fanbase, continually travels in search of tasty delicacies, and he even went to Israel last winter in order to get a better idea of what he wanted to do with his team. During the trip, Chef Corbet realized that “simplicity is key, especially in the summer here. We had a tomato salad with a little vinegar, and the product was so shiny and just wonderful, it was hard to explain. There was nothing that needed to be done to make it better. In winter, it’s harder to get local produce, but in July and August, we really have beautiful produce here and work with local vendors and farms. We re-visited the menu just last week and now have lamb, simply marinated and grilled, with a fresh cucumber salad and a lot of fresh herbs. I’m also using fresh trout from Upstate New York, and it’s really delicious. I just brought leeks to the menu as well, served steamed and grilled on the wood oven with an almond vinaigrette and finished with olive oil. It’s all very simple and healthy, but all the flavors are there.”
He might hail from the French Alps on the border of Switzerland and Italy, but Chef Corbet has made the Hamptons his home and pays homage to his family’s foodie history. While he has fulfilled his dream of creating classic and inspired dishes, Corbet didn’t always fantasize about being in the food business.

“My father was a health inspector and my grandfather had a two-star Michelin restaurant, so I grew up around food, and the last thing I wanted to be was a chef because I realized that type of life was hard. I hardly got to see my grandfather on vacation or even at Christmas, but then I got the chance to start cooking and I understood everything after that. I worked with a Michelin-star chef and something clicked; I enjoyed it right away. I had very good mentors and they showed me that it’s demanding and hard work, but if you’re passionate about cooking, you have to do it, and it brought me here. When I came to the US, I was 24 and couldn’t speak English, and one of my friends, a chef, told me to come with him, and I moved here. I never thought I would be working here in America and growing this fast. It was a journey, but it was a fun journey. It’s a hard life but if you love it, it’s a wonderful life.” It might be a lot of work, but Corbet and his kitchen team, which triples in size in the summer, are full of passion, which translates to very palatable plates. If you are lucky enough to get a table at Lulu in the summer, you can experience some of their creative cocktails and diverse dishes, ranging from Grilled Spanish Octopus – one of Chef Corbet’s favorites – to Shakshuka, succulent steaks, vegetable platters, fresh fish, pizza, pasta and many more mouthwatering creations. He might be savoring his sweet success – and rightfully so – but Chef Corbet has stayed humble and listens to his customers as well as the critics. “The food scene is always changing, and I’m still learning every day. I’ve been cooking for 25 years, and making time to listen makes me better. Just the other day in fact, a young chef showed me a new way to cook things. When I opened my first restaurant on Long Island, I was 28 years old, and I listened to my customers so I got busier. I was friendly with my customers, and I would go to the bar and ask locals what they wanted to eat. I changed the menu, but I was still proud of what I was doing. You might be cooking for passion, but the person is still paying the bill!”

VOLAGE SPARKLING ROSÉ Add Shimmer to Your Summer By Julie Sagoskin
L
ooking for a sparkling rosé wine made from the best grapes for a sophisticated addition to your table or party? VOLAGE AOP Crémant de Loire Rosé is the perfect rosé for you! Founder François-Xavier Chaillou, a former executive at high-end luxury wine producers including Veuve Clicquot and Vintus, has achieved his initial mission to bring you the most affordable and high-quality sparkling rosé produced in the same way as the most famous Champagne. Four years ago, after having a hard time finding a good glass of rosé Champagne that wasn’t astronomically priced in New York City restaurants, Chaillou set his sights on the Loire Valley. The region is similar in latitude to the Champagne region and has a long history of producing both quality sparkling wine and benchmark Cabernet Franc grapes, which he considers ideal for rosé. He collaborated with Loire specialist Chris Hardy of Charles Sydney Wines, Ltd., a renowned wine export broker, and tasted over 70 different wines from small and large producers. He eventually discovered Domaine du Landreau in Val du Layon, a commune in the Maine-et-Loire part of western France. It is due to the vineyard’s unique soil, climate and expressive grape variety that Chaillou was able to create an innovative “grower Crémant.” Chaillou created his first wine with winemaker Elodie Battais and consultant extraordinaire Patrick Leon using hand-harvested grapes at peak maturity. The wine is made in the méthode traditionnelle, like Champagne, where the second fermentation is achieved directly in the bottle. The significant difference with VOLAGE is that it is aged for three years in the bottle (whereas the law in the Loire Valley requires only nine months). Coincidentally, this is the same length of time that a vintage Champagne requires. “If you want to make a sparkling wine at the level of Champagne, you have to put all the proper techniques into it in order to bring it to that next level. For VOLAGE, that means using better quality grapes from the well-established vines of a single vineyard, a long second fermentation and low sugar level,” he explained. VOLAGE, a perfect addition to your summer days—or nights—doesn’t have much added sugar, only 3 grams of dosage per liter, so you can enjoy the wine and better maintain your beach body all summer long. VOLAGE satisfies in both substance and style, with a sophisticated bottle reminiscent of an art nouveau perfume bottle. The name VOLAGE, which comes from a saying about birds flying away from their cage, in addition to having been a symbol of the suffragettes in France, is all about the idea of freedom. You too can feel free this season when you fill up your glass with VOLAGE, the best-looking and best-tasting bottle of sparkling rosé around! From this platform, a high level of networking occurs to connect global investment, innovation, and influence into new markets to create enterprising outcomes and mutually beneficial transformative growth. Since its inception, Destination Experience has convened a community controlling resources in excess of $140 billion and has seeded over $300 million in investments across a variety of sectors including real estate, energy, finance, and the creative industries. Former President Obama called this “An innovative platform for the promotion of entrepreneurship and a unique

business catalyst.” The events attract bold global luminaries including Wes Edens – Co-Founder and Chairman, Fortress Investment Group; Dr. Patrick Byrne – Founder and Chairman, Overstock.com; Wayne Hewett – Former CEO, GE Advanced Materials, Board Member Wells Fargo and Home Depot; Michael Lee-Chin – Founder and Chairman, Portland Holdings; Hon. Andrew Holness – Prime Minister of Jamaica; Hon. Mia Mottley – Prime Minister of Barbados and many more. The man behind Destination Experience is architect turned entrepreneur Sir Kirk-Anthony Hamilton. He has spent the last few years dedicated to shifting the image on Kingston , Jamaica and the wider Caribbean with noteable success. His mission is to demystify the region where he was born and showcase it as an investment destination ripe with opportunity beyond sun, sand and sea. Jamaica especially had a reputation for a gritty culture and gloomy
economy, but an economic turnaround currently underway signals the success of Hamilton’s efforts. During the day long summit at the trendy Spanish Court Hotel, high level conversations and panels centered around themes such as technology and the fourth industrial revolution, transformation for growth in the digital revolution, creating a culture that encourages inclusion to stimulate a collective genius, artificial intelligence’s influence in shaping the future of finance, and Bitcoin as the world’s new currency. Also highlighted was globalization and crossing frontiers into international markets and the upside of investing in Jamaica. Amongst the business leaders who spoke at the summit were Ann-Marie Campbell- Executive Vice President, Home Depot, Jeff Pulver- Co
founder of Vonage, Mr. Michael Wright- CEO Inno-life Sciences, Andrew Mahfood-CEO, Wisynco Group, one of the island’s largest food and beverage distributors; PB Scott ChairmanThe Musson Group, a diversified conglomerate based in Jamaica with operations spanning as far as New Zealand; Jimmy Nyugen- Founder and CEO of nChain, and Diane Edwards-President JAMPRO, Jamaica’s Trade and Promotions Agency. While insights and new ideas were discussed at the one day summit, new relationships were being forged at the various glitzy networking events and dinners, showcasing an expected side of Kingston which has remained largely undiscovered by international media. To kick off the summit, speakers and VIP guests were treated to a night of Jamaican hospitality at a cocktail reception held at Peter Bunting’s private
residence in the hills that was reminiscent of a glittery party in Cannes or West Hollywood. Bunting is a successful businessman who made his fortune in the investment arena and has now dedicated himself to public service. Following the summit was the Masters’ of Industry Reception and dinner sponsored by Appleton Rum that was held at the Mercedes Benz showroom and celebrated, “The Art of Innovation.” Leading the discussion was Lord Michael Hastings, Global Head of Citizenship, KPMG who discussed the timely subjectCapitalism, Inclusiveness, and Innovation within the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In his capacity he has seen the wave of change within the workforce and addressed the importance of the changing workforce and how to adjust the mindset to today’s needs in the workplace. The second presentation was an intimate fireside chat
between Peter Henry Blair, Dean Emiritus, NYU Stern School of Business and Dr. Nigel Clarke, the Minister of Finance as they discussed Third World Strategies for First World Growth. Finally the evening ended with a bang with Tim Hentschel, cofounder and CEO of Hotelplanner.com, who discussed the digital revolution’s impact on the travel industry and what the future holds. For a festive ending to the three day experience, speakers and select attendees flocked to the beautiful and historic Terra Nova Hotel’s Regency Room Restaurant for an intimate Influencer Dinner. Guests were kindly encouraged to sit next to a stranger over dinner in order to foster new relationships and meet at least 2 new people and engage in lively conversations. This concept has created many thriving business relationships.

BRENT FEINBERG
Helping Others Overcome Fear and Find Their Way By Tripp Whetsell
B
estselling South African author and integrative healer Brent Feinberg is an amazing person any way you slice it. What makes him even more remarkable is when you consider some of the hurdles he’s had to overcome and that he is only 29-years-old. Born in Johannesburg, Brent grew up in a diverse environment where he was exposed early on to the great economic disparities that exist throughout South Africa and internationally, as well as meeting and working with holocaust survivors, apartheid activists, orphans, and children and teens at risk. A major life changing moment occurred at the age of 9 when he witnessed his father being shot during a botched hijacking. Although his father made a full recovery, when he was 11 Brent experienced yet another personal crisis after his parents went through a messy divorce. Despite being academically advanced for his age, his parents’ divorce took an emotional toll on Brent. So much so that as a pre-teen he spent a lot of time in the principal’s office, often feeling unmotivated and at loose ends. There were also some significant turning points most notably meeting and spending time with South African President and anti-apartheid revolutionist Nelson Mandela when Brent was 10. Inspired by Mandela’s messages of hope and inclusiveness and alternative medicine guru Deepak Chopra, both men took a special interest in Brent, spending time with him and setting him on a path that would eventually change his life forever and motivate him to help others to do the same. By his early teens, he was already studying alternative healthcare, having become an advanced Reiki master, when he was just 13. Then, after enrolling in a mechanical engineering program at a local university, at the age of 20 he decided to switch gears to pursue his true passion: self-realization and consciousness-based healthcare which led him to become a certified Body/ Talk practitioner and yoga teacher. His career and life is dedicated to uplifting people, teaching them how to live in harmony with others and the environment, and inspiring them to go within to live up to their potential. Driven in part by his personal experiences, and with a particularly keen interest in enlightening children, parents and adults by empowering them to better understand themselves and communicate more effectively,Brent began working closely with the Tomorrow Trust. Having been in private practice, Brent recognized that all people were in need of help, particularly when it came to overcoming fear, anxiety and finding purpose. In 2016 he published his first series of books called Freeing Freddie the Dreamweaver. The books are used as school curriculum in both South Africa and America. Brent’s second book Revealing Freddie the Light Within,

which offers lessons on how to develop your own inner gifts and personal power, was published in 2019. With 1 out of 8 American children diagnosed with anxiety disorder, this has become a serious issue that Brent’s work addresses in a powerful way with practical skills and tools that can be used both at school and at home. Through his exceptional ability in writing, Brent reaches all ages through his books creating positive social change The corporate workshops Brent leads address how fear negatively impacts productivity. Believing that life is a work in progress with constant room for improvement, Brent pushes himself to grow every day, while aiming to help others do the same. “In order to feel fulfilled in our lives we need to have a greater understanding of who we are within and how we function daily,” he says. “This translates into an understanding of what we want in our lives and how we need to take on the responsibility of creating the life that we wish to have. Dreams don’t manifest without action and focus. Always keep dreaming, learning, connecting and growing. Give of yourself totally to each moment. This makes for a fulfilling life!” withlovefromfreddie.com

cases. He received world-wide acclaim for his representation of scion of the Fiat industrial dynasty, industrialist and entrepreneur Lapo Elkann, as he negotiated and obtained a dismissal of all criminal charges against Mr. Elkann before charges were ever filed in court. In another case, Zelin successfully defended a federal insider trading case where the government dismissed the case after the jury could not reach a verdict and a mistrial was declared. A highly sought after legal commentator for the media, Zelin regularly appears on Fox News, Fox Business Channel, CNN, CBSN, CNN Headline News, Bloomberg, Law and Crime, and in the New York Law Journal, where he offers his expertise on a wide range of legal issues and cases. When he is not in court or appearing in the media, Zelin is a frequent lecturer at continuing legal education programs on criminal law and procedure and has taught as a guest instructor in various local
law schools’ trial advocacy programs, as well as for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy. Recent topics Zelin has offered his expertise on in the media include “Takeaways from Michael Cohen’s Testimony” for Associated Press and “The Precarious Role of Defense Lawyers in White-Collar Crime” for the New York Law Journal. Zelin is known throughout the United States as having successfully gotten a 345-month downward variance for a celebrity client in a federal securities fraud case. His greatest achievements, however, are those that never come to light – where the problem is solved before there even is a problem, where the high-profile client’s problems get no publicity, and where the client never sees the inside of a courtroom. 2019 SAMUEL WAXMAN CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION Breakthroughs Scientific Symposium By Peter Elston
T
he Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF) announced groundbreaking summaries of its research advances from the past year at the 2019 SWCRF Breakthroughs Scientific Symposium at the Leon and Norma Hess Center for Science and Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center. The event brought together more than 100 SWCRF grantees, scientific leaders and stakeholders to mark the conclusion of the annual two-day SWCRF Scientific Review, an evaluation of SWCRF funded research programs.
grants up to $200,000 each. The SWCRF expects to award the grants in July with some of the research focused on aging and cancer.
Notable cancer investigators funded by the SWCRF along with members of the SWCRF Scientific Board spoke on the research discoveries that were reported on during the SWCRF Scientific review. These included advances developing novel therapeutics based on new understandings of epigenetic and genetic mechanisms associated with cancer development and progression, how cancer cells become dormant or reawaken to spread through metastasis, successes in treating childhood leukemia and the role bacteria may play in pancreatic cancer.
“The research on aging and cancer that Dr. Waxman and the SWCRF are advancing will help identify the genetic footprint of cancer development that is age dependent,” said Ross L. Levine, M.D., Chair in Leukemia Research and Director, Memorial Sloan Kettering for Hematologic Malignancies, and a SWCRF research grantee. “Since aging is associated with a variety of chronic disease, we hope that the impact of the research funded by the SWCRF will be greater than one type of disease related to aging.”
Samuel Waxman, M.D., Founder and CEO of the SWCRF also shared updates to the foundation’s partnership with the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and National Institute on Aging (NIA), which launched in 2018 to spearhead research focused on understanding the links between aging and cancer. He also announced that the SWCRF recently issued Request for Proposals for eight research

“We know that the incidences of cancer increase with age but what we need to understand is what underlying mechanisms associated with aging happen at the cellular level to cause the development of cancer. The partnership among the SWCRF, NCI and NIA is furthering research in aging and cancer that historically has fallen behind,” said Dr. Waxman.
Other presenters included Dena K. Weiner, Vice President of the SWCRF Board of Directors, SWCRF Chief Science Officer Jonathan Licht, M.D., Director of the University of Florida Health Cancer Center, members of the SWCRF Scientific Advisory Board, Lorraine Gudas, Ph.D., Chairman of Pharmacology at Weill Cornell Medical Center and Martin S. Sullivan, Executive Director of the SWCRF. The Foundation’s biggest fundraiser of the year returns to Bridgehampton on Saturday, July 13, 2019. The 15th Annual Hamptons Happening to benefit the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation will honor Lidia Bastianich, Nicole Miller, Ian Duke and Antonella Bertello. Held on the Bridgehampton estate of Kenneth and Maria Fishel, this year, the SWCRF is reinventing one of the East End’s most anticipated summer fundraisers to bring you the flavors of the world - without leaving the Hamptons - for one delicious and exciting evening. This “Tour de Cuisine” event will feature food, wine and liquor tastings that will transport you to some of your most favorite culinary destinations in Asia, Europe and the Mediterranean, Spain and Latin America, and the Middle East. While you “hop” from region to region, enjoy live music from Pat Farrell and the Cold Spring Harbor Band- “The Billy Joel Tribute Show.” The event will also feature a special music performance from Caly Bevier. waxmancancer.org

UNCONDITIONAL LOVE GALA Supporting Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation By Elizabeth Darwen
T
he Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation will host its 10th Annual Unconditional Love Gala on Saturday, July 20th, 2019. The event will take place under the tents at Wickapogue and Old Town Roads in Southampton, NY - starting with a cocktail hour at 6:30pm, followed by dinner and dancing. Entertainment will be provided by Elan Artists’ Nation with dinner catered by Stone Creek Inn. A live auction will feature fabulous items that include packages for five-star European hotels, group golf outings at the East End’s most prestigious golf courses, and more. The Event Chair is Jean Shafiroff and the Honoree will be Aimee Sadler, Founder & CEO of Dogs Playing for Life. The event’s Host Committee includes: Antonella Bertello, Amy Cosman, Missy Hargraves, Sharon Kerr, and Randi Schatz. The Junior Chair is Kate McEntee, and Junior Co-Chairs include: Kingsley Crawford, Jenny Dwork, and Merritt Piro. This year’s Media Sponsor is Hamptons Magazine. Gregory D’Elia will be emceeing the event. Proceeds from the event directly support the more than 5,000 animals who enter the shelter’s doors each year. Whether caring and finding homes for stray and abandoned animals to providing low cost veterinary care and dog training so that animals can remain in their home, the Southampton Animal Shelter has become a vital resource in their community. With the generous support of donors, they can continue to provide lifesaving programs and services. The Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation is unique on the East End, taking in animals from all 7 villages and 18 hamlets in the Township. With its “open admissions” policy, it accepts all animals – no matter what breed, physical or medical condition, special needs, or what age. The shelter also takes in animals from neighboring towns and beyond. Shelter services are broad-based. It provides low-cost, mobile veterinary services throughout the region. Plus, it conducts educational classes in local schools on humane animal care. The Southampton Animal Shelter is the true “community” shelter on the East End. Most significantly, the shelter’s Medical Services and the Behavior & Training program are unsurpassed. These, along with the professionalism and “match-making skills” of the Adoption Department, are the key to the shelter’s extraordinary adoption rate of 96%. Shelter staff, and its fabulous volunteers, make sure that no animal is left behind. The Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that relies on the generosity of their donors and volunteers to care to for the homeless animals in its community, and to place them in loving “forever homes.” The number of animals in need of help is growing every day. The overpopulation of pets on Long Island is a major issue and sadly more amazing animals are ending up homeless. Whether caring for strays found wandering the streets, rescuing neglected and abandoned animals, or saving dogs from the horrors of the puppy mill industry, the

shelter is a safe haven for all animals and for some, a last resort. Without SASF, these animals would not be able to survive. The shelter provides a steppingstone for animals to find a loving home. It offers them housing, food, medical treatment, training, and rehabilitation when necessary. southamptonanimalshelter.com

STRIDE ARTS Founder, Angel Zhang
Angel Zhang, Linda Sun, CG Aaronson Credit Farzin Farhang
By Bennett Marcus
Art Collector & Entrepreneur Entrepreneur Angel Zhang is a longtime patron of the arts, an art collector and a supporter of established and emerging artists in China and the USA. She relocated to NYC a decade ago, and during that time Zhang realized that many renowned Chinese artists were not known here, and many talented local artists were not properly represented. Knowing this, she founded Stride Arts, an exhibition and educational space in the heart of Manhattan at 1110 2nd Avenue and 58th St. Stride Arts is more than a traditional gallery, offering a wide range of services to both artists and collectors. For artists, Stride Arts is a multifunctional platform, offering studio space, marketing and strategic business advice, as well as promotion through unique programming. “We have created a different business model,” said Zhang.
“Stride into the Future “ Upcoming exhibitions will vary between solo and group shows, and Stride Arts plans two annual awards, “Stride into the Future,” designed to encourage children to create artwork, and another competition for adult artists. Down the road, Zhang hopes to utilize her commercial printing business to create different, more mass types of production for Stride’s artists. “We see there’s market there for original high-end
The Infusion of Ink and Clay The space, is 6,500 sq. ft., comprising a 3,500-square-foot showroom, plus smaller galleries, a video wall and a stage where artists can give performances and talks. It can also be used for events like product launches or fashion shows. Currently, award-winning Chinese artist Xiangdong Chen is having his solo show entitled The Infusion of Ink and Clay through August 16th. Selling & Leasing Art For collectors of all types - personal, business or institutional - Stride Arts will negotiate the sale of artworks through their team of specialists who curate pieces available at affordable prices that can be regularly rotated. Leasing art is not a new concept, Zhang notes, but they hope to take it to new heights. Angel points to Rent the Runway, as a business model.” Some young people want to enjoy high-end art, but often they can’t afford the price of a single piece of art, so they are also our target audience.” Stride also serves more traditional art-leasing clients, like large corporations, banks and organizations, and the real estate industry. Governor Cuomo congratulates Angel Stride Arts had a successful soft opening night in May, attracting more than twice the 80 invited guests. Local City Council members turned out, and Governor Cuomo sent a representative to convey his congratulations, as did congresswoman Grace Meng. Some of the standout artists included in the opening show were Xiangdong Chen, a Chinese artist based in New York, Chu Okoli, a Nigerian now based in Houston, and American John Shorb, based in Brooklyn. Xin Song, a well-known, award-winning artist from China whose work is in public installations in New York City, wowed the crowd with a live performance, creating an artwork before their eyes. These artists were all selected by Zhang, who obviously has an expert eye, as several pieces had sold by the end of the evening.

The story is larger than life. It takes you on a roller coaster journey of ecstatic highs and star-crossed-lover lows. The choreography is so infectious that you can’t help but want to join. Our set immediately grabs you by the hand and pulls you into a futuristic world of endless possibilities.” The rock songs of Steinman come to life through the story of rebellious youth as Strat, the immortal leader of The Lost, falls in love with Raven, the beautiful daughter of the tyrannical ruler Falco – and you will fall in love with everything from
the songs to the characters. “This show is about you,” explained Polec. “Your love is embodied on this stage through these passionate characters, the heart-wrenching and glorious Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman music, and the life and death events that either pull us asunder or bring us closer than we ever imagined. In the end, it’s love that unites us all.” The entire cast was coached by Meat Loaf, but they put their own twist on this production, which has everything from rock to romance! batoutofhellmusical.com

“While people will come expecting the same ‘face melting’ Rock of Ages, we have updated some things to make it fit our new cast, and we’ve put some fresh takes on some old favorites. It’s the Rock of Ages everyone knows and loves with a touch of nutmeg, unexpected and so satisfying. Our Olivier-winning choreographer, Kelly Devine, has wanted a certain Def Leopard song in the show since day one. They finally got the rights to their music, and we put a brand new number in
