A SEASON OF CHANGE

I

t’s with fond and bittersweet feelings that I am writing my last Editor’s Note. Over the last three years as editor-in-chief, I’ve interviewed extraordinary talent, worked with some of the best creative talent around to create gorgeous fashion and beauty spreads, and traveled the world to bring exotic luxury destinations to life through our pages. As we are expanding our team, it is with much pleasure to announce that I’m handing the reigns to our talented writer, Julie Sagoskin, who will be our new editor-in-chief while I transition to a brand ambassador role as luxury director to further bridge Resident’s role with luxury brands and experiences. In my new role, I will lead the team to bring the aspirational and luxury lifestyle Resident embodies to life while still covering all that is buzzworthy and fit to print. Whether it’s through luxury travel and destination shoots, splashy celebrity covers and parties, high-profile activations in NYC and beyond, I am thrilled to be working more closely with luxury brands across all categories to forge new relationships and beginnings for Resident’s new chapter. This month, we featured Amy Morin, author of 13 Things That Mentally Strong People Don’t Do, which is a best-seller and has been translated into 35 languages. This book led to a series of books proving that inspirational advice transcends borders, nationalities and age. By controlling your thoughts, behaviors and emotions, we can develop mental strength and learn how to block all toxic things in our lives, whether it is people, thoughts and/or patterns that can change our lives. After interviewing Amy for this month’s cover story, I realized what I needed to change in my life personally and professionally to practice mental strength and positivity. She wrote this book at the lowest point of her life. As many steps as you can proactively take to change your life, there are things to be aware of not doing. Her life-changing words of wisdom can be applied immediately, and I hope you enjoy our exclusive interview with Amy as much as we did writing it. Summer is just around the corner, which means longer, sun-filled days, summer Fridays, and weekends at the beach! We highlighted some of the best travel destinations around the world this month from the breathtaking destination of Jade Mountain in Saint Lucia to an in-depth exploration of the luxurious side of Southern Italy. With the Hamptons’ social season kicking off this month, stay tuned in the coming months for everything Hamptons. Escape to the great outdoors to enjoy this glorious season!

THE PARTY OF THE YEAR Met Ball, Cher, Lincoln Center’s 60th, Art NY, Harlem EatUp! Stride Arts, Cantina Rooftop & Hunter Mountain Film Festival By R. Couri Hay with Photos by Patrick Mcmullan THE PARTY OF THE YEAR The Met Ball “Everyone should just go home!” joked Anna Wintour after watching Lady Gaga’s strip tease from Tom Brady and Gisele voluminous Bundchen pink cape, to her @ Met Gala black underwear as she made her grand entrance to the Met Ball. Who could top that? The pop star commandeered the pink carpet for a performance piece that took 16 minutes to execute. A chorus of umbrellawielding men in black provided the cover for her four costume changes that included a black ball gown and a form-fitting pink Hailee Steinfeld @ Met Gala

column. Wintour, the guiding light of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute’s Gala for the last 21 years watched Gaga’s show-stopping

entrance from the top of the stairs. Luckily, no one went home. The zany parade of 550 stars in witty haute couture, vogued up the museum’s stairs, to Camp Met for three fabulous hours. Standouts included Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth (she literally licked his face like an ice cream cone), Gal Gadot, Demi Moore, Nicki Minaj, Ariana Rockefeller, Salma Hayek, Emily RatajkowsBella Hadid ki, Jennifer Lopez @ Met Gala and A-Rod, Celine Dion, and Zendaya in a Cinderella dress by Tommy Hilfiger that lit up on cue. Why can’t the Oscars be this exciting? Camp: Notes on Fashion I walked through this year’s exhibition, Camp: Notes on Fashion with Zendaya @ Met Gala

pinkhaired English designer Zandra Rhodes, who was my fiancé in the

’80s, and Club Kid legend Richie Rich who has a spectacular dress made of stuffed kittens in the show. The exhibit contains 250 objects including paintings, hats and shoes dating from the 17th century to the present. Andrew Bolton, the Met’s Curator in Charge is responsible for the Met’s remarkable catalog. See the show and buy the book! metmuseum.org What the Stars Said Marc Jacobs, who came with Kate Moss, Rita Ora and Lizzo said, “Camp is extra. It’s being who you are, your most Jonelle affected, genuine, Monae @ Met exaggerated, extra Gala version of yourself and not caring about fitting in.” Gwen Stefani came with Moschino’s Jeremy Scott, Jared Leto, carrying a wax model of his own head, came in regal red robes, by his BFF Gucci designer Alessandro Michele, who along with Harry Styles was wearing a sheer top with a pearl earring to the benefit that Serena Williams and Gaga co-chaired.” Katy Perry, who came as a chandelier, confided,

“This weighs 40 pounds.” When I asked how long it took her to get ready, she quipped, “My whole life.” And this was before she donned a humongous hamburger suit for the after parties that were so difficult to maneuver in, she fell down on the dance floor and couldn’t get up. Kim Kardashian inspired Thierry Mugler to come out of retirement to make her skintight nude ensemble dripping with crystals to resemble water. “He wanted me to look like I just came out of the ocean” she whispered, adding, “I can’t sit or pee and I’m barely breathing.” The Look The Met Ball is both exclusive and expensive, and Ms. Wintour, a Met Trustee, approves every invitation. Tables cost $200,000 with tickets at $35,000; this year they raised $15 million. Over $200 million has been raised by the savvy Vogue editor-inchief since she took over the reins of the Ball. The extravagant décor, produced by Raul Avila, included a flock of 25-foot tall pink flamingos with gold sequins covering their legs and beaks. Among those swanning past were Sienna Miller, Bette Midler, Michael Kors, Sean Parker, Mark Ronson, Gillian and Sylvester Miniter, Miuccia Prada, and Julianne Moore.

SOCIAL SAFARI Cher: Haven’t We Met? In 1974, Cher was the first to go to the Ball nearly nude in a sheer, sequined number by Bob Mackie. I interviewed her as she came off the Met’s steps and when the lights from my TV cameras exposed every bit of her, l blurted, “Are you nude under that dress?” as she purred her response, “Does it matter?” while I blushed. Cher returned this year to perform, and you really can’t get any campier than Cher singing “If I Could Turn Back Time” in a series of outlandish getups that culminated in see-through black lingerie worn under a biker jacket. ANGELO DAVID PISACRETA

Changes Your Look and Maybe Even Your Outlook on Life By Julie Sagoskin Photographed By Jaime Pavon Groomer: Tania Guerra for Angelo David Salon

W

hen you leave Angelo David Salon, you’ll walk out the door with confidence, whether you walked in with a full head of hair or not very much at all. That’s because Angelo David Pisacreta, founder of his namesake Madison Avenue salon, is a hair hero to those with thinning hair or hair loss—no matter what the cause. Growing up in Yonkers, New York, Angelo was inspired by his Italian immigrant father’s success as a barber and a toupee maker. His Uncle Joe

was a barber and his cousins were hairdressers, too. So, after a few false career starts, Angelo decided to try his hand in the hair business. Turned out, he was a natural. “I went from attending a competitive school to working in a professional environment with people who were acknowledging me and my work,” says Angelo. “I realized that a hair salon was where I was meant to be.”

Angelo learned the ropes at a local Yonkers salon, moved to Fifth Avenue in Manhattan and quickly began making toupees and wigs. Then he decided he wanted to start his own business that catered primarily to women and their special hair needs. His father, who had originally hoped to open a salon in Brooklyn, decided to invest in Angelo’s unique vision of a Manhattan specialty salon for those with fine and thinning hair. After all, notes Angelo, the shag might be in right now, but trends don’t stick around like they used to—especially in

STYLE

New York City where you can see hundreds of different looks every day. “Almost half of all women have thinning hair, which is really distressing to them,” adds Angelo. “Great hair is part of women’s self-esteem, and by working with women to help solve fine and thinning hair problems, I was able to bring my artistry to the next level. “Once, I made a wig for a girl who was going through chemotherapy-related hair loss and I designed it to look exactly like the hair that she had before her treatments. When I saw her reaction, it was very emotional. Changing looks and lives is the beauty of what we do here, whether we’re taking things from the runway to reality or re-creating the hair that someone once had.” But adding simple hair extensions or creating a well-fitted wig wasn’t enough for Angelo. Drawing on all his experience and insights, as well as his father’s expertise in toupee and wig making, Angelo created Couture Hair, the first 100% human, highly customized hair that matches anyone’s natural hair in terms of cut, color, texture and density—and enhances it. Couture Hair extensions, wigs, toppers, fillers, toppers, ponys and bangs meet every hair

need—from the desire for more length to a believable toupee to a beautiful and comfortable medical wig. Each piece is customized to the client’s needs, wants, desired look and lifestyle.

styled countless celebrities, including Christie Brinkley and Alexa Ray Joel, also loves creating a look for someone’s wedding day by helping her try a few— or 20—bridal looks for her big day.

Since creating Couture Hair, Angelo has been constantly evolving his salon and enhancing his offerings. The new Angelo David Salon is a modern, meticulously designed facility that offers a spa-like experience. It boasts 2,500 square feet with seven private VIP Hair Suites, a hair extension styling bar, a beauty concierge department, a beauty lounge and a Couture Hair boutique. The boutique offers both Couture and ready-to-wear hair, so that most clients can have the hair they want the same day they walk in the door.

Of course, the focus on new services and products remains giving clients the full head of thick, healthy hair that they’ve always wanted. Angelo’s own hair care line, VOL, includes a range of products to boost body, volume and fullness. Most recently, Angelo added The Flex Brush, which helps eliminate tangles, tugging and hair breakage—all while massaging the scalp, and Hair Detox hair revival supplements to support naturally healthy hair growth from the inside out.

“We have industry veterans visit the salon and they are blown away by what we’ve created here,” notes Angelo. “Hair pieces have become more prevalent than ever with so many salons incorporating them into their businesses, but you have to know how to do it right and go all in. Faux hair has now become part of our culture; it’s no longer a taboo to talk about it.” The salon also offers Couture hair color, makeovers, nail services and bridal looks. While Angelo has

Hair Detox contains Biotin and Hydrolyzed Keratin, as well as nutrients, essential vitamins, antioxidants and herbs that help support the detoxification pathways in order to create the ideal environment for healthy hair growth, strong nails and vibrant skin. Specifically, it contains a Detox Matrix Blend, which is made up of Green Tea Leaf Extract, Aloe Vera Leaf Powder, Dandelion Root Powder, Cranberry Fruit Extract and additional nutrients and herbs that have been shown to combat hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies and environmental aggressors. It also contains a Stress Relief Matrix Blend comprising

mixed Phytosterols, Ashwagandha Root Extract and Holy Basil Leaf Powder. And, it comes in specific formulas for men and women. “A lot of people are taking supplements and vitamins for their hair, skin and nails, but we took it to a higher level,” comments Angelo. “We wanted to address the all reasons why men and women are having thinning hair issues, and we concluded that stress and inflammation of the body play substantial roles. If you want to prevent hair loss or just want to feel good, Hair Detox has everything that you need, and you’ll be putting ingredients into your body that are good for you. We’ll also be introducing a shampoo, conditioner and topical-solution kit soon.” There’s no question that Angelo is a happy, successful businessman, but he’s an even happier family man. Angelo and his wife Robyn, who live with their 8-year-old son, Carmine Luke, on the Upper East Side, love city life, but during the summer, they de-stress at their home in the North Fork, Long Island. Some of Angelo’s favorite things to do is keeping himself active with his sons sport, plus loves his 1975 classic car and on a beautiful sunny day, driving with the top down. His local favorite spot on the Upper East Side is Jac’s, he frequents Benjamin’s Steakhouse in midtown, Shoji is his favorite Japanese restaurant in the city and his favorite Italian restaurant is Marea at Central Park South. Angelo’s extended Italian family includes his sister, brother and hardworking parents, who live in their own Italian-style villa in Greenwich, Connecticut, where his father grows food that his mother cooks. Which just happens to be the next trend—feeding your head with locally sourced food, ideally grown in your own back yard. Healthy body, healthy hair. It’s the next big thing. When you sit in Angelo’s chair he can not only create a vision but he executes it as well. angelodavid.com

JANEL TANNA Actress, Model & Producer By Bennett Marcus Photographed By UDO SPREITZENBARTH Produced by Christopher A. J

anel Tanna is an actress, occasional producer and screenwriter who, just four years into her career, has appeared in more than twenty projects. She has won 16 acting awards at various film festivals, plus two writing awards. She has also received an additional 10 acting nominations. Not bad for someone who almost never went down the path of acting, which she had often daydreamed about, but life seemed to have other plans. “It was just fate,” Janel says of becoming an actress. She had gone to New York City for some work interviews and to visit some college friends. On a whim, she put an application together for The Lee

Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute. She said, “I got accepted the day after I went in for the interview component, and they were very encouraging.”

The acting classes were only for a few months, she figured, and she had always wanted to gain more formal training in the craft.

Janel had boarded a plane to return home, but the airline wouldn’t let her bring her dog, a miniature husky, into the cabin; they insisted he had to go in cargo. She refused, and after many hours, Janel and her pet were finally given the go-ahead to board another flight, but that one never ended up taking off, due to an engine malfunction.

Shortly after her Strasberg classes began, Janel auditioned for an independent film and got the role, and that team was very supportive. “They’re like, ‘You’re very gifted as an actor,’ so this team was a very encouraging environment. They really allowed me to discover the truth in my role and believed in me. And I ended up getting nominated for best actress at a film festival for that very first role, and it just went from there.”

“I got off that plane, and I’m like, this is a sign, I’m not supposed to leave New York City right now.”

Awards and honors Janel’s most recent awards include the Mary Austin Excellence in acting award, which she received at the prestigious 2019 Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema. The award is based on cumulative acting skills as demonstrated in different roles. Also at Idyllwild in 2019, Janel was honored with the Kristoff St. John award, which is bestowed in memory of the talented and inspiring Kristoff, an actor, to someone who has demonstrated inspiration to their peers. At the New York City International Film Festival, Janel was recognized with an emerging talent award for her performance in Sienna’s Choice – a film that she also produced. With all the acclaim, Janel has her feet firmly on the ground, and is always studying and learning. “It feels good to have my work recognized by my peers, or people that have been in the business longer than myself,” she says of the festival award circuit. “It kind of gives me a little notion I’m on the right track.” Niagara Falls film festival ambassador, accolades She has been named very first ambassador for the 2019 Niagara Falls International Film Festival, coming up in September. A native of the Buffalo-Niagara area, she will be representing the festival, which this year is honoring the late Samuel Fuller, the prolific screenwriter, director, actor and author.

In 2017, Janel was named best actress in a feature film at the festival, and was praised by Joseph Kissel, festival film reviewer and editor of Niagara News Source. “Tanna possesses the rare combination of strength and vulnerability required for an emotionally honest and ambitious trip through hell that’s also unexpectedly affirming. Tanna’s intensity and empathy makes ‘Sienna’s Choice; an authentic heartbreak.” Award-winning writer/producer Ron Podell opined, “I thought Janel Tanna’s performance was the best I had ever seen out of a female actor at a film festival. Her performance was raw and messy, she went deep to tap into her emotions.” Latest projects Janel has also been making the film festival rounds with “Turnover,” a comedy/drama starring Donna Mills and Paul Guilfoyle, of CSI fame also directed by Palmer (of Sienna’s Choice and Intervention). Although a smaller role, Janel was finally able to play a doctor. The team is very near and dear to her, as they often work together. At the Manhattan Film Festival “Turnover” won best comedy, and at Idyllwild it took the audience choice prize and won best family film. It won the best feature film award at the 2019 Golden State Film Festival, and also had a slew of nominations. “Intervention,” a dramatic short in which she plays a drug addict suffering from withdrawal which touches upon the opioid crisis and mental health at a deep and personal level, wrapped recently and is now being submitted to various film festivals. “It was a very intense role. It looks at addiction and

mental health issues.” The film has received its first official selection at the Show Low Film Festival in Arizona. Producing, writing Although primarily an actress, Janel also has a small production company and creates the occasional film. She signed on as a producer on “Intervention,” along with lead producer Julia Silverman, and director producer Linda Palmer. The first film she produced and was the lead story writer, “Sienna’s Choice,” looked at end-of-life care and the decision-making involved, and has won accolades in several realms. “When it comes to writing or producing films, I like to personally produce films with some sort of social message or relevance that gets people to think and consider things both through their own eyes, and perhaps open them to other perspectives.” She also believes it is important to create a story from a female lens, and to include talented women in that filmmaking process to help a vision come to life. Getting into character When preparing for roles, there is not one specific thing Janel does; she relies on a combination of techniques, including working with Carl Ford of the Susan Batson Studio to develop her characters. “I of course do my research to try to really absorb and understand things from someone who might have actually experienced the topic at hand. I do internal, personal work to really draw a parallel within myself. Whatever I need to do to reach the most truth I can feel.” And she learns from her fellow actors. “Whenever I work with actors that have been in the game for a really long time, it elevates my acting. I can be a little intimated going into a project with them, but once I’m in the moment it makes it that much more truthful.” In addition to method acting training at the Lee Strasberg Institute, she trained in the Meisner technique with James Brill at the renowned Neighborhood Playhouse, and has her sights set on auditiong for the Actors Studio. Modeling, Maxim covergirl While acting was a goal she’d dreamed of all her life, it was pure serendipity that Janel became a model. A friend, a top UK makeup artist, thought Janel had what it takes, and encouraged her to try auditioning. To her surprise, she quickly booked a L’Oréal job, and it snowballed from there, and she has now walked the runways for several seasons in Paris and New York, for ready-to-wear and couture. “Modeling is a very thrilling artform and I have met some amazing humans.” Without initially planning it, Janel entered the 2019 Maxim Cover Girl modeling

competition – and won over 30,000 other applicants, taking home a $25,000 Famed fashion photographer Gilles Bensimon shot the magazine cover, and Janel has earmarked the prize money to help finance her next film project. Coming up, she plays an Eastern European femme fatale in “Cozmo’s,” a sci-fi comedy series that will run on the on-demand streaming service Atomic Network. You might ask what was keeping Janel from living out her acting dream from the start? While Tanna considers herself a lifetime learner and student, and although her heart always wanted to act, she also has a love for science and connecting with people. Prior to training in acting, she earned a medical degree (MD) summa cum laude. Janel was also elected as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society. During medical school, Janel was the recipient of the McGraw Hill Book Award for being in the top two ranked students (out of a class of 144) in the basic science curriculum, the Edward Curvish Award in Biochemistry for the medical student with the highest average in medical biochemistry, a medical research award, and a Glascow Rubin awarded to all the women graduating in the top ten percent of the class. Tanna was also a student member of the

medical school admissions committee, tutored renal physiology and a did a research fellowship on cerebral aneurysms. She started her training in brain surgery but at the end of the day she says, it’s not for everyone. Prior to medical school, she taught students for the MCAT (medical college admissions test), did research in DNA replication and repair, and won the Merck Index award for the top one percent of the class in Organic Chemistry. Growing up she was a competitive gymnast and college cheerleader. Pets, Instagram, yoga Janel’s beloved miniature husky was just a puppy when he got booted from the airplane, he’s now, of course, a bit older, and she also has a cat. “They’re like my children.” Janel has over 74,000 followers on Instagram, although she says she has no system for posting to the platform. she just posts whenever the mood strikes. She loves practicing yoga, which she finds is not just good for her body but also for her mind. “It clears my mind and body.” She only has time to do it a couple of times a week, but in a social media post, she looks quite advanced and flexible. It turns out that Janel is an ex-gymnast.

BEN JAMIN PRELVUKA J & BEN JAMIN SINANA J Achieving Rare and Succulent Success By Julie Sagoskin Photographed By UDO SPREITZENBARTH

W

hat’s in a name? Well, if you ask Benjamin Prelvukaj and Benjamin Sinanaj of Benjamin Steakhouse, they might tell you it’s the secret sauce to their success. Since breaking out onto the steak scene, the Benjamin’s have brought back Old School service and hospitable hospitality. They have indeed blazed their own well-cooked way and now own multiple restaurants

in New York and Asia – the sky is the limit, at least when it comes to their signature steaks! From growing up in Montenegro to conquering the culinary world, one succulent steak at a time, the Benjamin’s take pride in their service, surroundings and selections. After working together at the famed Peter Luger Steakhouse in Brooklyn, these

entrepreneurs decided to start their own enticing and elegantly appointed empire. Benjamin Prelvukaj explained that “we were looking for space and finally found a place which we liked on 41st that was listed in The New York Times. It was previously called Kenny’s and before that it was NYLA, a Britney Spears restaurant.”

“We were fortunate to acquire the property at an optimal location only one block from Grand Central Terminal,” added Benjamin Sinanaj. “Benjamin Steakhouse and Benjamin Prime were conceived based on the idea of New York City being the steakhouse capital of the world. Steakhouses have always been a destination for business meetings, special events, and celebrations, and we wanted Benjamin Steakhouse and Benjamin Prime to stay true to that. The Sea Fire Grill came as we grew and understood our guests’desires. We both enjoy seafood and also wanted to create a high-quality dining experience.” When it comes to maintaining a loyal clientele, the Benjamin’s believe in consistency, and they definitely don’t cut any corners when it comes to offering the finest cuts. According to Prelvukaj, the three ingredients you need to succeed are “high-quality food, cooked to perfection of course, service and ambiance. People come back because they know they’re going to have a great meal and they’re not going to be disappointed. We aim for everyday perfection.” Meat has definitely met its match at Benjamin Steakhouse. From greeting guests to ensuring each meal and experience at one of their restaurants is both mouthwatering and memorable, the Benjamin’s

62 | resident.com

remain both in the front of the house and behind the steak scenes. Sinanaj explained: “We’re a completely family run business, and that is really to the benefit of our guests. Each week, we are constantly in the restaurant and always on the floor making each guest’s experience extra special. You might be greeted and served by a few of our wait staff throughout your meal to make sure your experience is personalized and unforgettable. Our goal is to make each guest a member of our family when they walk through our doors. Some of our staff have been there since day one. We also have a commitment to preparing fresh and high-quality ingredients to the expectations of each and every guest. Every cut of beef is hand selected and dry aged in-house, a technique we’ve learned to perfect. Quality food and hospitality is everything.” “I am down five days a week at my restaurants,” added Prelvukaj. “I physically go to each one of them every day. The other Ben is more back of the house and I’m more front of the house, but he’s also involved in daily operations.” These phenoms of the food world are already focused on the future and cooking up plans for

expansion. With their original Benjamin Steakhouse still on 41st, as well as a location in Westchester, plus Benjamin Prime and a more modern concept, Sea Fire Grill, which they opened in 2010, the Benjamin’s are busy running their restaurant realm and relishing in their rare success – they are definitely living the dining dream! The Benjamin brand is also taking over Japan with more of their hospitality focused spots on the horizon. “We have a lot of Japanese clientele who are familiar with the brand and come on a regular basis,” explained Prelvukaj. “I had a client and a friend who had been coming to Benjamin Steakhouse for years and he told me you’ll do great in Asia, especially Japan, and I said if you find me a partner who knows hospitality, I would love to, otherwise, it’s too far. He finally found us a partner who has restaurants in Tokyo and all over Asia, and we now have a Benjamin Steakhouse in Tokyo and just opened another one in Kyoto. We’re currently working on opening more restaurants overseas within the next two years.” In addition to reaching new global audiences who have now also gained an appetite for their appetizing approach to dining, they are expanding their

e-commerce platform in order to sell their “Benjamin at Home” line which features supreme cuts of beef, steak knives and house made sauce. No matter what side of the world you’re in, your Benjamin Steakhouse cravings can now be satisfied – just beware - once you bite into Benjamin’s tender filets or fatty rib eyes, you can’t go back! Aside from prime cuts and pork chops, each of their restaurants also offer popular seafood options, such as sea bass and salmon, so those who want to munch on mouthwatering morsels at a Benjamin’s multiple times a week can find a diverse array of delicious items. “From steak to fish, we’re trying to stay on top, and it’s all about quality of food. From A to Z, it’s top of the line,” said Prelvukaj. These steak saviors who keep their foodie empire in the family, both live in the suburbs of Westchester and can be found at the beach when they’re not at one of their Benjamin’s. They believe their hospitality

66 | resident.com

expertise is what sets them apart from other steakhouses, as Prelvukaj explained that “a lot of places are just okay and people don’t want just okay, because it’s not cheap. A check here comes to about $100 to $150 per head and we want to make sure every aspect of it is great, especially when they have so many options. Sinanaj also credits their success to their workers. “We have some of the hardest working cooks, waiters, back of house staff, and front office staff in NYC, and are very proud of it,” he said. “We offer an exceptional experience just by hand picking every single piece of meat we serve and offering the loving care of dry-aging in house. Even our international locations receive our handpicked meat from here which is shipped overseas.” Another secret to their tantalizingly tasty steaks is that their cows are ninety percent grass-fed and also corn-fed for two months. Prelvukaj explained how they get their perfectly prime meats through “the aging process which makes it a lot easier to digest

because all the enzymes get broken. We age it for a least 28 days, usually longer to ensure perfection.” Sinanaj added that “Our guests and consumers in general have become more conscious of ingredients and where their food is produced. It’s very important for us as well, and we are transparent with all ingredients and promote a healthy setting for people of all walks of life and beliefs to enjoy the ‘cut above the rest’ dining and hospitality experience. We understand our guests at each location. It’s important to know how they’re alike or different and the personality of each restaurant.” From expanding their restaurant repertoire which now includes six locations to becoming an internationally recognized brand, the Benjamin’s are indeed basking in their sweet success. You have to bite into a Benjamin’s steak – or surf and turf - to believe it! benjaminsteakhouse.com theseafiregrill.com

J.MAK Making Waves in the Travel Industry By Julie Sagoskin Photographed By Neil Tandy

H

e might be a native New Yorker living in the same apartment he grew up in – with a 3000 square foot terrace it’s not hard to see why – but Jon Makhmaltchi is a jet setting globe trotter who has taken his J.MAK Hospitality brand to new heights. J.MAK, a representation company which works with travel agents, advisors and hoteliers, also emphasizes the power of personal connections and personality – something which Jon and his teammates have plenty of! This hospitable hospitality honcho who believes his strong work ethic and passion for the industry is what has gotten him this far, explained that travel has always made him tick. “My mom jokes that my first words were ‘room service’. I’ve traveled extensively with my family, I did not go to school for hospitality. I liked staying with my mom and dad at hotels. I used to jump in the pool in any hotel we stayed at and my mom would say she felt that the staff at the hotel gave me more attention than my family did. The staff were always good to kids and I would follow the maids around and I’d have lunch with them and help them make up the rooms. It’s strange but even as a kid I wanted to work! My family also spent a lot of time in Switzerland and Colorado, my dad is a big skier, and I eventually worked for a company that was European, so historically my feel for the industry came from those early years with my parents. In the early years of my career I also ran sales and marketing at the Huntington Hotel in Nob Hill, San Francisco, and opened other hotels including one in Napa Valley.” Jon and his team might be friendly and approachable, but they never approach hotels or partners, it’s always been about a referral, whether it’s from a developer, travel agent or a hotel owner with multiple locations. He might have started out running sales and marketing at Small Luxury Hotels of the World, but J.MAK has grown exponentially bigger over the last six years. The success of his company has even surprised Jon, who said “the journey has been a beautiful organic growth. The team of people with me, we’re all like family. I’ve known them for many years. My best friend works for me in New Zealand, another friend is based in Pebble Beach, California, my assistant has followed me from Small Luxury. It’s a family concept, there is no turnover, no corporate gobbledygook, it’s about incredible service. I hate titles, we are all hospitality personalities at J.MAK. I think people forget hospitality is about making people feel good. Whether it’s through social media or technology, they want to feel special, that’s more important than a first class plane ticket. It feels good when someone treats you with respect. We believe that the people behind these great places is what makes them so special, and if there’s not a really great personality behind these places, they’re not great places. I think our success comes from our work ethic. It’s fun, hospitality is fun, we’re making revenue for our clients and we’re really passionate about it. We exude this energy that we’re excited about what we’re doing. Even if it’s on Instagram and Facebook, you have to scream through so people feel you. I like to create that feeling even if it’s not face to face.” While his hospitality brand is hotter than ever and soaring to new heights, Jon’s personal life also has him flying high. This exuberant entrepreneur is happiest

68 | resident.com

when he’s working from home and spending time with his husband, a nice Jewish doctor from Montreal, and a son who now also gets to grow up enjoying that outdoor oasis complete with a shed and wildlife. While he has flown around the world, Jon’s head is not in the clouds, he is very grateful for everything he has in his life and explained, “I never thought I’d be married, I didn’t think I’d have a child. I’m living the American dream, maybe the global dream now. I’m lucky.” Jon, who loves to design homes, has a home which pays homage to the great hotels he’s visited around the world with pieces he’s picked up on his travels. He might have been to places across the globe, but Jon’s favorite place to rest and relax from his busy life is at his home in Rhinecliff, New York. “I’m more of a mountain guy than a beach guy. I love fresh water. I’m more of Hudson Valley guy than a Hamptons guy. If I don’t escape to the country I go nuts. I can walk to my home from Rhinecliff station which is one of the reasons I love being here. It’s such a treat to be able to take a train ride from Penn Station to Rhinecliff, it’s like going back in time. When it comes to travel, I enjoy active places. I love the Bay Area, I lived in California for years. I love food, wine, hiking, the outdoors. I pay homage to Cavallo Point Lodge in Sausalito cause they were the first to hire me. I’m also from a major city so I love London, Paris and big cities. As they say, country mouse, city mouse – I’m not a big suburb fan, the sprawl is not my thing. The majority of our selections are in the beach and mountains, although many are in the city. They have this essence, which is why we have so many in Europe.” Travel is the world’s largest industry, and Jon and his team are focused on connecting to the right people, not just having social media likes. According to Jon, “You can go to a five star location without a five star budget depending on when you go, and we’re good at maneuvering. Eighty percent of business comes from 20 percent of the people. Social media is like television, you have to have lots of channels to make sure you’re attracting different people, from someone who wants to save money on their bucket

list adventure to someone who doesn’t care about the money. Our client is the travel advisor, and we bring different people together and help get them rates and availability. The other customer is the hotelier that we work for, and we also have private jets and destination management companies, so we have ambassadors in each place. We help travel advisors and hotels take off and land, it’s a fun collaboration. We have great connections and we’re best known for our response time. We get them in touch with right people so we can get them the best service possible.” Jon’s take on travel trends is that “luxury villa rentals are popular and Portugal is exploding. Everyone seems to be going to Portugal. Italy and France are always number one and number two and Greece is another hot one. Santorini, Mykonos and even other islands are getting attention too –people want to jump to Crete or other places which are flying high on the radar. I think people are rediscovering America, whether it be the lodges out West or ski locations. They’re also looking for great escapes from metropolitan areas and we have great places in Maryland, Cape Cod, Massachusetts and Upstate New York, which are in reach of New York City, Boston, Montreal and so on. People are really looking for quick escapes too as well as action and adventure in exotic places like the Maldives and Indonesia. People have dreams to go to places like Cambodia and Thailand, there’s a real excitement about it. Skiing more than ever is big, and it seems it’s not just Colorado or the Alps, it’s a real mix. Travel is easier for people, airlines are going non-stop. People want choices. There’s also the whole jet set crowd, whether it be St. Barts, the Hamptons, St. Tropez, or people who want to go to multi-generational places.” Jon’s business, which helps get people on business class or beyond, is continuing to take off. From building partnerships within the travel industry to letting their personable personalities shine through, the team at J.MAK is making waves from California to Croatia and beyond. jmak.com

Obviously, it is Hotel Villa Franca Positano, a small Italian contemporary boutique hotel, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, sitting on top of the breathtaking cliffside. Boasting unique amenities, superb service and great food, the four-pearl hotel is a painting drawn in the brightest colors of joy. Hotel Villa Franca lords over the marvelous town of Positano, imposing its luxurious will upon the rural yet picturesque surroundings. At a bit over an hour drive from the Naples International Airport the hotel seems more like a gift rather than a waste of time. With its distant location

84 | resident.com

from all major cities or towns, the hotel is an ideal destination for those seeking peace or solitude within the chaos of the modern world. The sense of tranquility and the undeniably extraordinary views lull the hotel’s guests with a poetic ode to ultimate relaxation. The hotel is located on a little rocky outcrop at the top of a spectacular, splendid and more than a little pictorial Positano, the Amalfi Coast’s brightest star, showing off with traditional houses and villas that hide in a cascade of sun-kissed peach, leaning down over the marine abyss. The steep streets of the town are crowded with incredible restaurants, eclectic shops and beautiful people. An onproperty complimentary shuttle bus service will take you to Piazza dei Mulini and back. Those who are all about exercising can always take a

15-minute stroll down the winding road with shortcuts via steep stairways, but the walk back takes a bit more effort. The nearest beach is a 10-minute walk, but the hotel’s free beach shuttle is also available, if requested. In case you get bored of sunbathing under the silky sunshine, ask Hotel Villa Franca staff to arrange one of the guided tours to exciting places such as Sorrento, a town commonly known for its small shops selling an arrangement of handcrafted goods, Pompeii, a must-visit historical sight, and the charismatic Gulf of Naples. Upon arrival at the hotel’s premises, the first thing guests get is the complimentary sparkling wine, and after the sip of a refreshing local drink, they notice the unique style of the hotel. The fusion of classic Positano with a bright, contemporary twist

creates an arts-like experience. The hotel boasts 28 rooms located in the main villa, which come with terraces or sea-view balconies, and 14 suites with access to an appealing terraced garden in a nearby annex. Both rooms and suites feature chic white and beige decor, each of them equipped with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and marble bathrooms, stocked with generous quantities of the in-house toiletries. Don’t judge the hotel by its appearance, but by amenities, it has to offer. Despite the small size of the property, Hotel Villa Franca provides guests with the full range of superior facilities, including a 360-degree views rooftop pool with comfy sun loungers, chic wellness center where all treatments are performed by seasoned therapists, hammam and steam rooms for relaxation after journeys

on the local stairways. Foodies can take cocktailmaking classes, and cooking lessons led by the prize-winning barman or hop up on a tour of local food and wine producers. Indulge in the exceptional fine dining experience with the elegant, classy verandah-style restaurant Li Galli that offers an aspiring gourmet menu, where dishes are crafted with local traditions and seasonal ingredients. Overlooking Fornillo beach and the Galli islands, simultaneously sample a culinary gem, lacquered rabbit and eel, dressed with kaki vanilla compote and mint. Don’t miss out an opportunity to try other signature dishes like bu alo Genovese sauce cannelloni with burnt onion cream and pepper foam, risotto with hazelnuts “Mortarelle”, langoustine and orange, and, the most exquisite and tastiest plate, BBQ

pork belly with candied peppers, annurca apple and licorice chutney topped with beer sauce. The restaurant’s extensive wine is undoubtedly a delight for customers. A more casual poolside version of Li Galli, Galli Grill is located up top, offering grilled plates, snacks, and hand-crafted cocktails. Don’t forget about the excellent breakfast that includes a variety of great organic products. Hear, smell and see Positano with all its meditative sounds, rich scents and breathtaking views, while residing in a luxurious setting of Hotel Villa Franca, the cliffside legend of the Italian means of hospitality. slh.com villafrancahotel.it

MARCO SCAPAGNINI Italian Insider and Niche Italy Founder By Julie Sagoskin

W

hen it comes to food and fun, Marco Scapagnini puts the “IT” factor into his IT-alian tours. Marco has definitely found a niche for helping travelers find the most secretive and scrumptious spots with his tour company, Niche Italy. From Emilia Romagna, a paradise for food lovers looking to please their palate, to the magical beauty of Capri which captures the imagination, Marco brings his journalistic expertise and Italian background to entice you with his – and Italy’s - most enchanting charms. Before becoming a master of all things food, wine and travel, Marco earned a degree in biology as well as a masters in journalism in Milan. His growing passion for the culinary arts and adventure led him to review restaurants and hotels, and before long he was flying high at Mondadori, the largest editorial group in Milan, where he was responsible for the company’s travel base with his expert advice appearing in multiple magazines. The Napoli native continued his successful writing journey with DK, another publishing company based in London, during

88 | resident.com

which time he mostly worked remotely from Italy. He eventually wrote over 50 books for Eyewitness about Lake Cuomo and other picturesque Italian towns which made him even more of a boss on his boot shaped country. Marco really started getting a move on his business ideas when he moved to Washington, D.C., where his brother was living in the early 2000s. It was around this time that he started thinking about focusing his efforts on something more food related because tourism had taken a downturn after September 11th. “I started a food and wine company and really began promoting and creating Italy in the U.S. I then got back into tourism with tours for people wanting to travel for the food and wine industry. I had people asking me to find something very unique and authentic, places where the locals were going. Because of my credibility as a journalist and being Italian, they were going and experiencing what I was putting together for them, and they were getting reviews and people were calling and calling me. It was more giving

advice to friends and then I decided that I need to do this as a profession, not just as a favor. When I was traveling with small groups I could be a guide and take people around knowing the local people. At local restaurants, chefs come out and say hello Marco, same thing with the wineries, I’m well-known by everybody. You won’t find this kind of hospitality with other tour operations. Connections are the key word. I put together a group of friends and now here we are with Niche and our experts where we mostly work with American travelers.” Of all the places he’s lived, from his birthplace of Naples to New York, Sicily is Marco’s sweet spot, and he still enjoys showing visitors all of the town’s secret spaces. Sicily, which Marco refers to as “the melting pot of Mediterranean culture,” definitely has an intriguing and illustrious past which you’ll gain deep insight into. Marco explained that “Sicily is composed of 2,000 years of history made by the Victorians, Greeks, Normans, Celtics, etc., who took the island to build their own architecture, their own art, their own wines, from different parts of the Mediterranean Sea.

What’s magic is that it’s not destroyed by what other people built. You have Greek architecture, then Spanish influence, then another 50 miles you have temples and another 50 miles north you’ll find more Arab influence. It’s like touring all of the Mediterranean Sea in one island.” From winding roads to wineries, Niche will take you on the road less traveled – but more worthwhile. Each destination is deemed worthy of Marco’s stamp of approval, and that includes the trending town of Matera, which has served as an inspiration for artists, writers sand moviemakers. Matera has gone from under the radar to right on the map after being designated as the capital of European culture. Marco described the town as a “dream, it looks like Jerusalem, with houses built in stone. It was a movie set for The Passion of the Christ and Ben-Hur scenes. It’s definitely more popular but there are still no big hotels, it’s more boutique hotels, there are lots of steps, you can’t bring in big buses. The tourism is still very niche, it’s more for individual travelers.” He also loves Lucca, a small town in Tuscany which he described as a place where you can “walk around, you can bike, it’s not busy with tourists. It’s my kind of town where I would like to retire!” Lucca might be lovely, but Marco has no plans to retire yet, and still offers small group tours and more custom, individualized experiences, so you can explore the Aeolian Islands, Portofino

and Piedmont, the Amalfi Coast, Puglia, the Italian Riviera, Florence, Perugia, Assisi, Chianti, Montalcino, Spoleto and many other spots which will leave you with memorable moments to last a lifetime. You will be instantly immersed in local Italian culture with boat expeditions, pesto classes, and scenic surroundings ranging from small fisherman villages to volcanic islands. One thing’s for sure - nobody does niche travel like Niche Italy! Each tantalizing tour will also give you a taste of the best burrata and other bellissimo bites Italy has to offer. Marco explained that the reason you’ll be saying mamma mia with each mouthwatering morsel is because recipes are passed down by word of mouth from grandmother to daughter to son as part of the tradition, nothing is written down. “I learned from my mother how to cook and my mother learned from her mother. Ladies especially broke out from the house to the restaurant, so you can eat just like at home. They have the same suppliers, so they can access the same products, they never buy anything from a distributor. They go to the same little markets when buying for their house, and that’s the key to keeping our food so much better.” Want to relive your incredible Italian itinerary even after you get home? Loyal travelers can become members of the Marco Club and continue to experience Sicily back in the states! That’s right, Marco will ship olive oil and new

products from Italy straight to your home – or even come to your home for a post-trip party, complete with private wine tastings and dinners. If you’re looking to rediscover your roots you’re in luck. They are currently working on a genealogy tour due to high demand amongst their travelers, many of whom are American with Italian last names. Marco explained that “we are really creating an experience with this tour which will be designated to finding where their ancestors came from. They’ll do some research on ancestry. com and then in Italy we’ll go to the archives and find as much as we can on our side. When they come to Italy, we will meet the mayor and have a party with friends and relatives, so it’s going to be spontaneous.” With clients in New York, California and Texas, this titan of travel is traveling most of the time himself doing wine tastings and wine presentations around the country with his wine company. When he’s not leading tours, Marco has a trustworthy team who he trained himself taking small groups around the most picturesque – and palatable parts of his beloved country. Ready for a tour of Italy featuring local hospitality, secret spots and life changing lasagna? On your Marco, get set, go – book a Niche Italy vacation! nicheitaly.com

CASA DE CAMPO A Luxury Golf Resort and Vacation Destination By w. a. muller

W

e touched down at Punta Cana Airport on beautiful sunny day. Our destination was Casa de Campo, the 7,000 acre internationally renowned luxury Golf Resort and vacation destination in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. We were picked up at the airport by a private van and whisked away to the resort, which is about 45 minutes from the airport. My husband and I were in Punta Cana about 14 years ago and the improvements in the airport and major roads were dramatic. We arrived at the Welcome Center for the resort and immediately decided to have lunch at the Cana restaurant which also has two pools, one with a swim up bar. After lunch, we changed into our swimming attire and went to the other pool

area for resort guests at Minitas Beach. The area offers two pools, one for children and one just for adults; we went to the adult only pool. Beautiful set up with both deck chairs and Private Cabanas. Complimentary reef friendly suntan lotion and after sun moisturizer are provided for resort guests. We also spent time relaxing at the private, reef protected Minitas beach. No shortage of food with the Minitas Beach Club Restaurant and two food trucks offering casual gourmet food. The first evening we had dinner in the area of Altos de Chavon, an authentic reproduction of a 16th Century Mediterranean village replete with its own 5000 seat Grecian style Amphitheater. The village was meticulously designed by a Dominican Architect, Jose Antonio Caro, and Italian master

designer and cinematographer Roberto Coppa. La Piazzetta, an Italian themed restaurant at Altos De Chavon that has a very open feel and a wonderful outdoor patio. We all had pasta which was cooked to perfection. Everything was fresh and delicious. After dinner, we went back to our room which was a Luxury Villa suite that overlooked the world famous Teeth of the Dog golf course and has great views of the ocean. The rooms were spacious and the Shower was large and featured two shower heads. The next morning, we met with Maria Perez a Public Relations Executive who had arranged to give us a private tour of the resort. At 7,000 acres, the resort covers a land mass that is 11 Square miles or roughly half the size of Manhattan!

There are approximately 1,800 homes on the property and plenty of room to expand. There are many land parcels available through out the resort in including, Los Flamboyanes an area that is situated next the Dye Fore Golf Course, Vista Lagos where new villas are being planned that are sited in a serene lake setting. Riomar which offers unobstructed views of Altos De Chavon ,and Barranca Oeste, which is an older neighborhood featuring dramatic landscaping and impressive villas. These villas are excellent investment properties and make an ideal family vacation spot or place to retire. Security and wellness of the community are their priorities and this was very apparent during our visit. Casa De Campo is resort where you can be as busy as you want or do nothing at all and relax. There are so many activities beginning with day excursions to the pristine beaches of Catalina and Saona Islands both owned by the national parks system of the Dominican Republic. Catamarans leave throughout the day from the Marina.

If you want to stay close to the resort, Snorkeling, Kayaks, Sailboats, Banana boat rides Paddle Boards and local excursions are readily available for all guests. If you want to go deep sea fishing, you can charter your own boat or go on a group excursion. The Tennis Center, dubbed the Wimbledon of the Caribbean features 13 HarTru Courts and have 25 Pros on staff to help you improve your game. Between hanging out by the pool and sampling the exquisitely prepared foods at many of the delicious restaurants like La Casita, Pubbelly Sushi, and Lago, we fit in a round of Sporting Clays at the impressive 245 acres Shooting Centre at Casa De Campo. You are led by an instructor who provides excellent advice about how to improve your aim, what you are doing wrong and how to correct your mistakes. Each of the stations simulates natural movements of birds and animals in the wild. The clays move at different angles and speed to test your range and skill. And a Casa De Campo stay would not be complete, of course without testing your skills on of their world-class golf courses, Teeth of the

Dog, The Links or Dye Fore. There are many Golf Packages available, some of which include access to all 3 courses. Instructors and Clinics are available at the learning center, which features state of the art technology and driving ranges to help you sharpen your game. There are literally too many activities, sports and events too list but suffice it to say, whatever you could imagine, Casa De Campo probably offers it. Lastly, a feature on Casa De Campo wouldn’t be complete without mentioning their world class level of service, from the valets that great you at the Welcome Center, to the desk clerks who check you in to the resort, to the cleaning staff who attend to your room, to the executive staff who run the resort. Everyone, and I mean everyone is incredibly friendly, gracious and eager to help you enjoy your stay in any way they can. The level of service you receive is truly unparalleled. Their goal is to make you feel like you are family and we certainly left with that feeling. One stay at Casa de Campo and you know it’s now your Casa as well. casadecampo.com.do

LE SIRENUSE POSITANO Poseidon’s Gift By christopher a. pape & simon Gusev

T

he real heart and soul of Italy is in the South. Renowned and delicious cuisine, ruby bold and sweet wine and unique landscapes are all essential components of the southern parts including Napoli and Sicily. Still, there is no better place to start your cultural exploration of the Apennine Peninsula than in beautiful Positano. Located on the outskirts of Naples, Positano is a cliffside village, a gem waiting to be found, and Le Sirenuse is one of the best places to stay in this scenic region. Considered to be one of the most comfortable and elegant hotels in Positano, Le Sirenuse is situated in a beautiful eighteenth-century mansion on a rocky slope leading down to a picturesque pebble beach. At Le Sirenuse you will always be welcomed with excellent service and exquisite cuisine – it’s no surprise that the hotel was awarded the title of “Best European Hotel” two decades ago. Le Sirenuse still belongs to the descendants of Sersale, who throughout all these years, have honored the traditions of hospitality which thrived in their family for years. Ancient legend says that Poseidon founded Positano as it was meant to

Positano is known for its nature and colorful houses decorated with majolica, piled on top of each other, offering breathtaking views of the sea. THE HEAVENLY JADE MOUNTAIN Living in a Dream By Hillary Latos

W

hether you are seeking a romantic getaway or just want to get away from it all, become one with nature and bask in pure 5-star eco luxury at Jade Mountain, which was named after the Pitons draped in emerald green rising from the ocean that resemble mountains of jade. Over 30 years ago, visionary architect Nick Troubetzkoy envisioned a resort in the middle of the rainforest, which later became a unique organic architectural marvel carved into a St. Lucia mountain that borders on sculptural, environmental art. The organic architectural design is host to 24 infinity pool sanctuaries and 5 sky Jacuzzi suites set amid hanging gardens with unrivaled views of the island’s most iconic natural landmarks. Every suite-sized sanctuary is divided into categories named after celestial entities, such as Sky, Star,

Moon and Galaxy, reflecting a different layout that showcases an open wall with an expansive terrace and a private infinity pool that mirrors the breathtaking panoramic view of the Caribbean Sea, sky and Pitons. You can sleep under the stars, breathe fresh air, and wakeup to the sunrise and sounds from the birds and admire a magnificent view. The accommodations are all generously sized with luxurious amenities such as private Jacuzzis, open-air showers and bathrooms. The poster beds are draped with mosquito nets and coils lit at night to keep the pests at bay. The private sanctuaries were created with very few right angles and a fluid curved geometry to guide guests to the exterior environment, which is so inviting and romantic that most guests spend their entire holiday in their retreat. For further relaxation and rejuvenation, book an ayurvedic, holistic or classical spa treatment that can be done

in the privacy of your sanctuary or in the Kai en Ciel spa. Dining Experience Experience the delicious bounties of the island under the direction of James Beard winner Chef Allen Susser, who incorporates fresh seafood along with locally grown produce from the island and their own organic Emerald Farm. Guests can dine under the stars at the Celestial Terrace on the top level that offers sweeping panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea and Pitons for daily sunset cocktail parties or stargazing. For a romantic alfresco candlelight experience, dine in your own sanctuary or at the breezy Jade Mountain Club that serves a delicious selection of international cuisine with a Caribbean flair. Nightly themed menus are also available that incorporate seasonal ingredients in savory and sweet creations like the multi-course

Mango Madness. Make your own chocolate masterpieces with the resort’s chocolate alchemist at the onsite Chocolate Laboratory. They use raw cocoa sourced from the property’s land. Activities at Anse Chastenet Enjoy the amenities of this 600-acre estate at their more casual beachfront sister property Anse Chastanet, which was the first property to be built on this secluded enclave. Snorkel in the crystal blue waters off the adjacent Anse Mamin Beach and indulge in a casual beachside lunch at the Jungle Beach Bar and Grill that serves grilled specialties and tropical cocktails inspired by the island. For casual outdoor dining on the water’s edge, visit Trou au Diable beach restaurant and bar, which’’’ serves nightly themed buffets and special dinners, such as the multi-course Lion Fish Experience. Enjoy the calm waters of St. Lucia and embark on a private catamaran for a champagne sunset sail with live jazz music as it sails over to the Gros and Petit Pitons to experience their magnificent splendor up close. Excursions around St. Lucia For the best panoramic views of the Pitons and St. Lucia, visit the Tet Paul Nature Trail. This 45-minute guided hike will take you past exotic horticulture, an organic farm, and “The Stairway to Heaven.” From the top, you can see the neighboring islands of Martinique and Saint Vincent, the majestic Pitons, and the gorgeous Southern side of St. Lucia. tetpaulnaturetrail.com Further down the road is the famous Sulphur Springs, which originated from a volcano that erupted in 1700. Considered to be nature’s spa, A-List celebrities, locals and tourists visit the springs to reap the detoxifying benefits of the mud baths, which are purported to make you look 12 years younger. The natural minerals from the earth help tighten skin, heal sun burns, and relieve eczema, arthritis, sore joints and more. After the mud bath, wash off under a waterfall in a refreshing natural rainforest bath. sulphurspringstlucia.com To get a taste of heaven is to stay at Jade Mountain. There is truly nowhere else in the world where you will be completely surrounded by a natural landscape of unmatched beauty that words cannot describe.

f you are familiar with the Hamptons you will know that there are new additions each season or a new twist to an existing restaurant, hotel or club. However, if you are thinking of making this your first season, the Hamptons technically does not exist – it is a collection of five beach towns at the Eastern end of Long Island – Southampton, Bridgehampton, East Hampton, Sag Harbor and Montauk. These five towns all have their own personality, Southampton represents “Old Money” with the oceanfront mansions on Gin Lane, Sag Harbor – the old whaling harbor and up and coming, East Hampton – home to celebrities and Montauk, the more bohemian surfing capital at the end of the Long Island Rail Road (or LIRR). The social season is in high gear starting from Memorial Day through Labor Day with every weekend being packed with events, adventure and dining all playing big roles. Here is our selection of some of the staples and newer places to be and things to do to get the most from your summer.

How did you come up with exactly 13 things to change people’s lives? Everybody wants to know if there is magic in the number 13, and the answer is no, I didn’t mean to come up with the number 13, I was just in a low place in my life where I was feeling sorry for myself. My mother had passed away, my husband had passed away, my father-in-law was diagnosed with terminal cancer and I thought why me, why do I have to keep losing people, this isn’t fair, but as a therapist, I knew that feeling sorry for myself would hold me back and keep me stuck, so that’s why that’s number one on the list, because that will drain your mental strength. I thought what else do I need to get rid of, and I wrote the list. When I was done, I happened to have 13 things, but it was the things that I had noticed in my therapy office over the years that were the reasons why some people tended to get stuck in life, whether they had gone through a hard time or had a rough childhood, or they were still going through rough circumstances and they just weren’t able to take any productive action or feel better. I had also studied enough people to know why some people are more resilient, why some people bounce back and why some people get stuck. Some people had never really fully grieved, or they had never been able to move forward. Then I also saw other people who had gone through tragedy and horrible circumstances and they were still energetic, hopeful, and really wanted to make a difference in the world. As I studied them, I realized that it wasn’t always about what people did, sometimes it was more about what they didn’t do. I thought about it in terms of comparing mental strength to physical strength. If you wanted to be physically strong, you’d want to go to the gym and work out, but if a trainer didn’t say, “By the way, if you really want to see results you should quit eating so much junk food, then running on the treadmill isn’t going to be that effective, and mental strength is the same. If people come into my therapy office and I keep telling them all the things they’re doing well, and I only tell them their good habits but I don’t point out the one or two counterproductive bad habits, then all their good habits are going to be fairly

108 | resident.com

ineffective. I wanted to help people eliminate their worst habits so their good habits become more effective. Is it now easier for you to see and understand the bad habits of your patients? I’d see certain patterns, such as feeling sorry for oneself. I’d have a lot of people come in and say I’m here, I’m ready to change my life, I’m committed to therapy, but then every week they just wanted to come in and tell me all the bad things that happened to them in the past seven days. They didn’t want to take any action, do anything or take control of their lives. After a while I would start to recognize these patterns and see that the people who seem to be struggling the most appear to feel sorry for themselves, they give away their power, and that’s number two on the list, which is about not being in control of how you think, feel and behave. They would blame other people for their problems, say somebody makes them feel bad about themselves, and it was really just about learning how to change their language and say okay, I’m in control, I can be in control of how I think, feel, and behave. As I was going through my own struggles in my personal life, I also had everyday case studies in my office and I would pay attention and study people, because I was interested in mental strength on a personal level at that point and I just wanted to identify these patterns that I’m seeing repeatedly which helped me to curate this list. Have you noticed certain patterns amongst different demographics or those in different life stages? I’ll often get asked whether younger people are more entitled, but I think that all age groups still struggle with the same things depending on where they are in life, whether they’re married, single, divorced, have kids or are in college themselves. I see a lot of the exact same threads because mental strength applies to everybody, but I think we all have certain struggles at different times of our lives. Something that you struggled with in college might not be an issue when you’re retired, or vice versa, but bad habits can reoccur when you’re going through a difficult course in life.

Do you think people’s mental strength is directly related to validation from others? The common belief I was seeing, which is something that we all struggle with at some point in our lives, is the self-doubting fear that leads to the belief that I’m not good enough, other people are better than me, I don’t belong here, or I’ll never succeed. That feeling of not being good enough is going to lead to bad habits like giving away power or giving up after the first failure. It’s because we think we are not able to succeed, or I’m not getting the approval that I want, I change my mind. Do people in toxic relationships give away their power too much and develop these bad habits? Mental strength is a personal journey to grow stronger, you have to make that commitment, it’s dedication, but the people around us definitely affect us. When we get caught up in a unhealthy relationship, it can easily lead to bad habits, it’s going to chip away at some of the beliefs that maybe you held about yourself or other people, and sometimes you have to change your environment - maybe that means setting boundaries or maybe ending the relationship, but that’s definitely a big issue. You go one step further than the typical 12 steps – was what was the significance of adding that last step geared towards helping people master their mental strength? Number 13 on the list is that you can’t expect immediate results, because I was seeing that lot in my therapy office. People would come in and expect that therapy was going to be the magic cure, that after two weeks of therapy their 30 years of depression would go away. We see this all the time when it comes to personal change and self-improvement. By three days in we think if I’m not seeing the results that I want, then it’s not working. It’s so tempting to throw in the towel or think I’m not good enough, I can’t succeed because it’s not happening fast enough, and in our world where we have technology and things that happen so fast, we forget that change and personal development takes a lot longer. You have to be patient and go at a slower pace and realize that you’re not going to see results in three days, and that just because you aren’t seeing results doesn’t mean it isn’t working.

How do you think your book relates to the Law of Attraction and the power of manifestation? A lot of people will say if you just think it, you’ll become it, and although they strongly believed they could attract good things, they wouldn’t take any action and it was actually keeping them stuck. It starts with changing your mindset, but then you need to do something differently. A lot of people seem to really struggle with that, and say well how do I take action, if I think positively won’t I change my life? That can be the first step, but it’s not the last step. So many people I’ve seen felt that simply putting something on a vision board was going to somehow magically make it happen, and yes our thoughts often do become a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you walk into a job interview thinking this is going to be horrible, I’m not going to do well, that’s probably going to show in your body language. It’s probably going to become evident to the people that you’re talking to versus when you walk in and feel confidence and look people in the eye and feel good about myself, because your behavior is different. Your thoughts don’t magically change the world. After losing so many people who were so close to you in such a short period of time, did you feel like the universe was trying to send you a message? I have a strong faith, and so I feel like when you’re given something, then there’s always an opportunity to learn something, and had I not gone through those things, I would have never written this list, and had the list not gone viral, I wouldn’t have written the book. There were so many things that had to happen for me to get to this place. Certainly, I wish I didn’t have gone through those hard times to get to where I am now, but because of it I just always believed that if I can get through this, how do I turn it into something positive? It’s up to me to say what can I do, can I help other people, is there something I’m learning about myself, is there a message I can spread, and now I’m thrilled I get to do this on a global level and get to talk to people all over the world about mental strength. Through my faith I feel like there was a plan for my life, and everything happened in a way to get to the place where I am now. How has your advice transformed your own life or gotten you to a better mental strength stage? When I first wrote the list of the 13 things it wasn’t even meant to be a public article, it was a letter to myself. I knew my father-in-law had maybe up to a couple of months left and I just found myself

reading this list over and over again. There are so many things in my life I can’t control, but one thing I can do is to get rid of these bad habits. I would read over the list and I thought if this is helpful to me, maybe it could help somebody else, and so I only published it online on a whim and never imagined it would go viral, but within a couple of days, millions of people had read it. There was no context to the article, it was basically just the list, so nobody knew that I had written it because I had struggled myself, and Forbes picked it up within a couple of days. Ten million people read it on Forbes alone, and before I knew it, Fox News was calling and wanted to do an on camera interview. Again, everybody just assumed here’s this therapist and she has this knowledge, but I didn’t tell anybody my backstory yet. I was on national television talking about the list, but it was four days after my fatherin-law had passed away and I wasn’t ready to open the floodgates on national TV and share the rest of the story. It was a weird time in my life because as I was going through the worst of times, but it was also really exciting because I was getting all this national media attention. Fortunately, a literary agent called and said you should write a book, and eventually I told her the story behind why I wrote the article, normally I don’t share my own story because I’m a therapist, I listen to other’s problems. It was really through the process of writing the book that made me more aware of how often I still engage in these bad habits. It really taught me a lot about the different ways they show up in your life and when you go through a particular struggle you still do this number seven on the list. I began to speak at companies and I would hear from a range of different people, and when the book was translated into other languages I would hear from people all over the world. This gave me feedback and insight to the kinds of struggles people were dealing with and how the list applied to their lives. This made me hyper aware of when I’m doing these things in my own life. How do you think social media is affecting people’s mental strength in regards to their confidence and bad habits? It has been found that certain things such as envying people on Facebook is directly linked to depression. I don’t think that social media is horrible, I use it all the time, but we can either use it to build people up, or it can be used to tear people down. We are

112 | resident.com

seeing so many ways where people do feel worse. The more time they spend on social media, the more they start to compare themselves to other people. Studies will show that Instagram is the worst one for your mental health because you’re just looking at pictures, and we create a story and think that person’s life is better than mine, they’re more attractive, they have more money, they’re happier than I am, and when we do that it affects our mental health greatly. I always encourage people to be aware of how much time they’re spending on social media, what they’re doing while on it, and just be more aware of how it affects you. If you are going to use it, just think about how you can use it to spread more positivity and build people up. If there’s somebody that you follow and you tend to feel worse, it’s okay to unfollow them. People tend to think that if somebody else got ten times as many likes as they did, then it means that that person is better than they are and think that it’s the one tangible way we can quantify our own popularity. As an adult you think am I the cool kid or not, and you start to look at social media and think I’m not as good, and so I think a lot of those bad habits I talk about in terms of mental strength play out on social media all the time - we give away our power, or we look at it and then feel sorry for ourselves, and it’s not real life compared to when you interact with people face to face. People tend to forget that. Do you think that our bad habits are formed during childhood or are shaped by some of our first social interactions? We figure out who am I, who are other people, how do I fit in the world. At seven years old you start to look at how do I fit in at school, how do my teachers treat me, how do my parents treat me. It’s important for parents to start young with these mental strength lessons, that was why I wrote the second book, the parenting book, 13 Things Mentally Strong Parents Don’t Do, because I was getting this question after the first book came out. I had so many parents reach out to me and ask how to teach this to my kids, or they’d say if I learned this 20 years earlier my life would have been completely different. I wanted to teach this to kids, but I wasn’t going to write a book and have a 7-year-old read it and change their life. However, if I can teach parents how to be a mental strength coach when their children grow up, they will already have those skills. There are so many opportunities every day

to help teach your kids to become mentally strong through the ways in which you interact with them. What do you think of all the #MeToo movement? Do you think there can also be a negative aspect to the movement or dangerous misinterpretations which can counteract some of your lessons? I think anything can be twisted and distorted and used in another way, and we see that playing out time and time again in many different ways. That’s why I wrote the women’s book, 13 Things Mentally Strong Women Don’t Do, in order to start talking about how you can become a mentally strong woman in today’s world. I see many people who are still victim blaming versus other people who are trying to get attention for certain things for the wrong reasons. Now that we’ve raised more awareness and we’re talking about it, that’s great, and the next question is what action will you take, how are we going to change things in the future. What is the easiest way for people to integrate some of these steps into their everyday lives? I think the easiest and simplest mental strength exercise you can do is practice gratitude. It only takes a couple of minutes a day, it doesn’t cost anything, and studies have linked gratitude to everything from better social relationships to a 20 percent boost in happiness to living longer. Grateful people tend to live a lot longer than other people, and so when you wake up in the morning just come up with a few reasons why you’re grateful and happy to be alive rather than just looking at your phone. You can think of three wonderful things you have going on in life before your feet hit the floor, and it can start your attitude out on the right foot. What are some of the biggest mental strength misconceptions? People confuse mental strength and mental health. You could be struggling with a mental health issue like depression or anxiety and still be mentally strong. That mental strength is about the choices that you make. Somebody dealing with a physical illness such as diabetes or high blood pressure can still go to the gym and lift weights and choose to become physically strong. It’s about the choices that you make. Even if you’re battling depression or anxiety, you can still be mentally strong because you’re making choices to improve your everyday life.

DAVID DATUNA Portrait of America By Bennett Marcus The National Portrait Gallery David Datuna’s artwork “Portrait of America,” a 12-foot American flag, was the first public installation to incorporate Google Glass, and it was a sensation when it was shown at the Smithsonian Institute. “It was their biggest show in the last 36 years,” Datuna says. In the piece, he laid a layer of 2,000 eyeglass lenses across portraits of the country’s greatest innovators. Adding the Google glasses, viewers see video and audio clips of important moments in American history. “I connected together art and lifelike technology through Google Glass,” says the artist who immigrated to the U.S. from Soviet Georgia.

to try to learn what life is like in each country, and to try to understand our planet. “I think maybe I’m not there yet, but very close.” New studio Datuna is now back in New York and creating artwork in a new studio in Long Island City, under the Queensboro Bridge. “I think it’s another step in my career.” He has a lot of new pieces coming out and is even

Flags Man Much of Datuna’s work involves flags and eyeglass lenses. People call him “flag man” because he uses flag forms. “Flags, for me, are living organisms. It’s not just the banner of the country; it’s a living organism, because, we all together, we make the living organism.” The lenses, he says, became his medium because he worked for many years in an optical store. “It’s like our view. It could be positive or negative; it’s all different perspective.” Cloning Eternity In June Datuna, created a 12 hour “Art Happening” in Washington Square Park in NYC. The artist unveiled a two-part installation of a perfect circle representing the ancient symbol of eternity and a skull representing life titled, “Cloning Eternity” The two pieces that created the sculpture are made from the artist’s signature eye glass lenses that create a ‘hall of mirrors’ effect, by reflecting the viewers image, distilling it and refracting it back towards them. This piece will be on display, with other new work, at the opening of his new Long Island City gallery at 43-05 Vernon Blvd on June 13th and everyone is invited. Documentary In the award-winning documentary “Datuna: Portrait of America,” filmmaker Brian Bayerl followed the artist for one year, in 2013 and ’14, as he traveled with his works to Miami, Russia, New York, and DC. During the filming, Datuna was diagnosed with cancer, adding a dramatic personal element to this period of his life. “The movie is very real. It’s what exactly happens in one year of my life, how I’m fighting with cancer, pushing my project and my ideas, how my friends helped me stay around.” His cancer is in remission, and he is very active. 57 countries in 3 years For the past three years, Datuna stopped working and took a trip around the world, visiting 57 countries, including India, Pakistan, South America, Russia, Europe and more. “I wanted to see the lives of people, to share life there, and it was great.” He stayed with regular people, not in hotels,

Travis Guenther with Vocally Alligned's Brittney Annie and Ashley Ryan

JULLIAN RECORDS Producer Travis Guenther By Bennett Marcus

T

ravis Guenther, who has worked on live events to Celine Dion, Pink and Gloria Estefan is a founding member of N.Y. based record label Jullian Records. Guenther is launching a new division focused on management, representation and producing musical artists called Take My Hand and their first acts are Vocally Aligned and the singing duo Monica and Nick. Vocally Aligned A four-member vocal group performing jazz and cabaret classics from the American Songbook, Vocally Aligned will open at Manhattan’s Algonquin Hotel, which is celebrating its 120th Anniversary this year at the end of June, followed by their debut at 54 Below in NYC on June 18th. Travis says that the four vocalists’ voices are the selling point. “Pedro Coppeti’s got this deep voice, Ashley Ryan has a very light, airy voice, Nicholas Leigh has more of a pop voice and Nazarria Workman compliments all of them. The four of them together are amazing.”

The Algonquin Travis was invited to dream up a Christmas show at the Algonquin Hotel in December. The shows were a hit, and the folks at the hotel asked if they’d like to do more. That’s when he came up with the idea for exploring the American Songbook, a perfect fit for the hotel which has been the home to legends including Dorothy Parker’s famous Round Table. “I wanted to take Broadway to a more accessible level than a Broadway show where the tickets are priced so high that nobody can go to see it.” Monica & Nick Monica Lu and Nicholas Simpson, classical musicians and singers, met when both were working on a cruise ship, and loved working together so much that they developed their own show, and have continued to collaborate after returning to shore. For their act, Nick, a tenor who has mostly worked in opera, sings, and Monica plays piano. They work across genres, mixing Broadway, the American Songbook, opera, and classical songs. “I always find the musical conversations I have with Monica to be interesting,

entertaining, and incredibly rewarding,” says Nick. “Nicholas and I have this chemistry we put out there, we always seem to interact with the audience, and with each other,” Monica adds. Travis is helping the duo to bridge the gap between land and sea. “He (Travis) is helping us find places where this sort of musical entertainment is embraced,” says Nick. Mutually beneficial Travis was hoping to get Vocally Aligned booked on the luxury cruise line, like Monica. “I was trying to figure out how to elevate Vocally Aligned into the kind of audience that would appreciate this, and cruise lines and resorts are things I was targeting,” he says. Monica and Nick were hoping to bring their act to venues like 54 Below, and so they realized they could all benefit by working together. Monica and Nick brought a complete show to Travis, which, he says, he’d have been a fool not to say yes to, whereas Vocally Aligned was his vision. If you love the American Songbook, at a price everyone can afford, you can see both acts in NYC during June. jullianrecords.com

ACTRESS KIERA CHAPLIN 2019 Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc Morocco’s Women-Only Off Road Rally By Peter Elston

M

ore than 1000 people gathered in the marquee tent in Essaouira, Morocco to ring out the 29th Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc in style. A total of 165 teams participated in the 29th edition of this one-of-a-kind adventure. It is the world’s first international off-road Rally race for women only. Since 1990, it has been bringing together women between the ages of 18 and 71, from more than 30 different countries, who embark on an adventure of a lifetime from the French city of Nice and onward to the start of the Rallye in the Moroccan desert. Participants of the 2019 rally included actress Kiera Chaplin, who came in 11th place in her 4x4/Truck category with her partner singer, Sophie Tapie. The gala was attended by the Gazelles’ loved ones in addition to all the event’s partners, who had

made the trip to Essaouira specially for this event. The festivities took place in a large marquee tent decorated in Moroccan style. “It’s grandiose, magical!” said Nathalie of Team 105 (Nathalie Rossini-Racaud / Nathalie Levert - Umanove). Dominique Serra, head of the operating agency Maïenga opened the ceremony. The evening’s surprises included a phone call from Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). “I am full of admiration and respect for everything you have accomplished” she declared, live from New York. The event partners were thanked once again for their support, and the winners of each competition class were then called to the stage to receive more gifts: the iconic golden sand ladder necklace, symbol of the Rallye; a Saint-Honoré Paris watch; and Afriquia fuel coupons. The diner was

accompanied by beverages supplied by Rallye partners Tsarine, Les Celliers de Meknès and Les eaux d’Oulmès. Images and videos of the Rallye were projected onto big screens, to the sound of “ohs” and “ahs” whenever a team recognized themselves. Emotions ran high as the room watched scenes from this year’s medical caravan in a video on Coeur de Gazelles. Sophie Tapie, crew 216, played two songs from her repertoire followed by Jérémy Frérot who made the surprise of coming and singing several songs gathering all the Gazelles on stage around him. After dessert, it was time to dance! The Gazelles hit the dance floor, eager to enjoy one last evening together and create ensemble and create still more good memories of their incomparable adventure. rallyeaichadesgazelles.com

ROGER KÖNIG

Brings Antique Techniques To Contemporary Art By w. a. muller

Tell us how you came to art. During my master craftsman training I used to restore ancient churches. As a result, I acquired a lot of knowledge in the field of old painting techniques. These included frescoing, marble painting, maceration and the processing of natural clay colors. I love matte and textured surfaces, warm colors and patina effects. My grandfather was an art collector and so the idea came up to combine old and traditional painting techniques with contemporary art. It creates beautiful color gradients. The natural clay color gives the pictures a very special texture, which stands in

124 | resident.com

exciting contrast to the delicate gloss of the acrylic paint. The properties of the clay color allow a more intensive treatment of the surface. I have spent many years trying to find the right composition of colors. Where did you go to college? I received my master’s degree as a painter and varnisher in 1994 at the HWK Halle (Germany). Afterwards, I studied Innovation Management at the University of Applied Sciences Magdeburg. What are your inspirations? That’s a good question, and to be honest, I can not always say exactly what inspired me directly. I like

to store motives or pictures that calm me down. I like natural, earthy and warm colors and matte surfaces. I want to radiate peace with my art. The world is very hectic and the internet gives us daily information and stimuli to process. Since a “Ruhepol” is very important. My artworks will take 4-6 weeks to complete. There are many layers of paint applied. The pictures grow like “children” until they grow up. Which form of painting would you say is your art? Not only do I not work objectively, I also include figurative elements in my paintings. My portraits and representations of figures bridge the gap between

abstraction and figuration. Elements of nature, such as beaches, lakes or oceans can also be identified. However, they remain vague due to the abstract nature of the painting and have to be read like universal codes. Also in this case, it is up to the viewer, what he or she wants to see. In each moment, new things can be discovered in the image, it changes its meaning: depending on light, time of day or personal mood. Who are your customers? Have you already done many art shows? My customers/art collectors are mainly from the USA and Germany. I have works in private

collections in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Texas as well as in Berlin, Leipzig and Munich. I regularly take part in national art fairs in Germany (Cologne and Leipzig). What’s your next series? At the moment I am working on a “Beach Series.” I try to show the most beautiful beaches in my abstract way, such as the “1272 Abstract Siesta Beach.”

presented beautifully with the blurred painting technique. Which artists inspire you the most? There are many outstanding artists who paint very beautiful works of art. I love, for example, art of Mark Rothko. He was an American painter of Abstract Expressionism and a pioneer of color field experiments. rogerkoenig.com

Which series are you most proud of ? I am particularly proud of the series “Abstract Girl in the Rain.” It is a fascinating motif and

ART EXPO

Bringing Inner Beauty to Life With Every Brushstroke By Julie Sagoskin

T

he annual Art Expo, held at Pier 90 in New York City, features artists of all mediums who hail from Spain to Sweden, but one particular artist from Japan is making a splash with his signature works which elicit powerful and poignant messages. This unconventional and self-taught artist, Cookie, who refers to himself as Nikuguso Taro, strives to show that everybody has the potential to be beautiful, both inside and out. According to Nikuguso, we all have the right to express our inner “kawaii,” meaning cute in Japanese, through our “otomo,” (soul), and he shows this belief with every brushstroke. The artist, who describes himself as “bakemono,” or monster, believes that even those who look like him deserve to feel and look “kawaii.” This sentiment is embodied in his many of his pieces, which portray faces resembling the artist with flowers around him in order to add to this colorful theme of “kawaii.” Other pictures show him with bows in his blonde or brunette colored hair – these works were made for those who are afraid to embrace the “otome,” or young girl which lives within us all. “Nikugusootome” aims to send a message that everyone is entitled to realize the pureness within their own hearts, regardless of their age, gender identity or appearance. The “Nikuguso” in “Nikugusootome” is the artist’s name. “Niku” is often translated to “meat,” but it can also mean ‘body,” or “what makes up a body” while “guso” means excrement. Humans eat to put meat on their bodies and finally the excrements return to earth and fertilize the food that is then eaten. “Nikuguso” is therefore a term for “human” which accounts for nature’s cycles. The works in the current collection, which are being shown in the United States for the first time at the expo, are just as out of the box and original as the artist. Cookie, who was born in the Shiga Prefecture of Japan, is part of the Yasei Bakudan comedy duo. From his scripts to his sketches, Cookie puts his whole self and creative side into all of his projects. The theme of his exciting and eccentric exhibit is Nikuguso Otome, or “meat feces maiden.” The artist sometimes even paints his own face in a

126 | resident.com

manner which resembles recognizable figures from both Japan and overseas. The pieces of this personable painter, which appear both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time, have attracted fans of all backgrounds, including celebrities in Cookie’s home country of Japan. He is now showcasing his pieces of unparalleled originality in New York so that he can reach a new audience who will be just as enchanted with his perception of perfect imperfections. In 2018, Cookie had ten commercial contracts, appeared in over 300 broadcasts and was even appointed as an ambassador for the international

How is your current style similar to what is was when you first started out? I originally started out making my own self “kawaii” by putting flowers on my own body. You do so many other creative things including comedy, so what made you decide to dive into painting? I have an older brother who is an incredible artist, but he’s really good at realistic, traditional, artistic paintings. We used to compete with drawing but then I realized I couldn’t win just fighting straight on so I started doing more original, unique things. Do you hope to expand in the US market? Yes, this is my first time in America and I would love for more and more. This is really my first shot. Why did you decide to intertwine the sentiments associated with “kawaii” and “otome” into your artwork? “Kawaii” is now understood as another word for cute through its popular usage in pop culture and “otome” refers to a young or unmarried woman, but it’s mostly defined as “a person with a pure heart who is moved by “kawaii” things. I believe that “otome” is the feeling of getting excited by seeing “kawaii that exists in everyone’s hearts. What was your inspiration for this collection? The main inspiration of the series is that all living things have the right to become “kawaii” or beautiful, no matter how they think they look traditionally and anyone can be who they want.

art competition, Art Olympia 2019. Cookie is currently slated to release a collection of his works entitled Cookism, and is involved with ARTRATES, an association supporting artists aiming for international success. The organization, which was founded in New York, is now based in Tokyo, and is building a bridge between the art world in Japan and the rest of the world. With a successful exhibit at the expo, this artist is ready to unleash his unapologetically unique works and conquer the rest of the country - and perhaps the rest of the continents.

What artistic pieces will you be working on next? I want to start making more sculptural pieces. I’ve been sculptural before so it will be in a similar aesthetic – just making a bunch of clones of myself! What is the message you want to share with your new audiences about who you are and why your stuff should hang on people’s walls? I’m gross but cute but still gross. supercookielandneo.com

The high ceilings, immense rooms, elaborate mantelpieces, original moldings, marble floors, top-of-the-line kitchens, and natural light flooding into each and every space are incomparable. The townhouse even boasts the third-largest ballroom in a private New York City home. Notable structural features include: elevator access on five floors, six working fireplaces, layout potential for nine bedrooms and nine baths, a Juliet balcony, two terraces, and a bi-level roof deck.

The townhouse is a tremendous opportunity for music lovers, art collectors and entertainers. The current unique configuration allows for gracious public gathering spaces and expansive private retreats. With Riverside Park and the Boat Basin serving as a glorious front yard, 40 Riverside Drive is a true Westside haven. Ground Floor: The ground floor features two entrances.
