A NEW BEGINNING IN SPRING
S
pringtime begins this March. The days are getting longer, flowers are beginning to bloom, and NYC is coming alive with a new energy. To celebrate the wonders of this season, we traveled to Guangzhou this month to experience “The Flower City” and partake in welcoming the Year of the Pig during China’s Spring Festival. This cultural exchange was an enriching sojourn to celebrate with the locals and to experience ancient traditions in a historic city where old and new China sit side by side. This month, we are featuring the talented British sensation Estelle, who just released her new album, Lovers Rock. Based on the long arc of her parent’s love life and personal experiences, producing this album was a cathartic process for her. Estelle reveals a lot of herself in this album, and she showed us that everyone deserves love, and sometimes you have to come full circle to realize you are exactly where you were always meant to be. A highlight of February is New York Fashion Week, and this month, we highlighted top trends for fall that we are eagerly anticipating. There are plenty of opulent options to look forward to from showstopping embellishments to bright jewel tones and exotics. For our futuristic spring fashion editorial, we traveled to Paris to showcase the modern monochrome athleisure trends that are hitting the streetwear scene. Spring getaways were on our minds, so we highlighted the warm destinations of Los Cabos, Sicily and South Beach. It’s never too early to start planning your next exotic escape. Living in NYC, there is always something to look forward to, and we welcome the spring’s new beginnings with open arms.

The Oscars, Karl Lagerfeld, Melanie & Mick, Carnegie Hall, Race of Hope, & Capital with A Conscience By R. Couri Hay with Photos by Patrick Mcmullan and Rob Rich The 91st Academy Awards The big mystery this year wasn’t who was going to win, it was where were the stars? In the glory days you’d see Elizabeth Taylor, Katharine Hepburn, Marlon Brando, Michael Jackson, Mae West, Orson Welles, Sir Rami Malek Laurence Olivier @ Oscars and more just like them. Where were Brad Pitt, Clint Eastward, Madonna, Angelina Jolie, Jack Nicholson, Liam Nielson, Liza Minnelli, Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus, Cher, George Clooney, Nicole Kidman, Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones? This year’s red
carpet was boring. Why don’t the super stars of today and the legends of yesteryear support Hollywood’s biggest night. Ok, Bette Midler, Bradly Cooper, Lady Gaga, and the other nominees showed up but it’s not enough! Barbra Streisand gave the night retro star power, although I wish she’d sing instead of giving her standard stump speech. The idea that you need to be nominated to go is just a lazy excuse not to pull yourself together for the fans. The

Golden Globes is much more fun! As to the awards everyone won that should have won but poor Glenn Close. Thankfully, the Academy spread the gold around to keep everyone happy. Green Book, Black Panther, The Favorite, Roma, Spike Lee, and Rami Melek won. Freddie’s pal and Queen documentarian, Rudi Dolezal, said there’s going to be a sequel to Bohemian Rhapsody covering the 14 years the singer lived before dying of AIDS. Even Gaga, who won the Oscar she deserved, shared the stage with Bradley Cooper who showed class and shrewdness by singing “Shallow” with Gaga to remind Hollywood just who cast her and directed A Star Is Born. I hope these two Jennifer dazzling stars have Lopez @ Oscars the friendship with benefits some people say they have, of course some people will say anything, N’est-ce pas. The most exciting things that happened was that both Rami Malek and Glenn Close fell on the floor, Rami on his way off the stage with his Oscar and Glenn while dancing at the Vanity Fair party without an Oscar.

Bscher, who represented the designer’s photography for over 25 years said, “Since our first exhibition in 1996, Karl has continuously and fearlessly explored the avant-garde of photographic processes; combining his compositional eye with his keen interest in the lost histories of the medium. His deep knowledge of art history has always been clearly illustrated in fresh ways throughout his oeuvre, while creating his own unique processes that will continue their influence on photography and art in general. In homage to one of the great Renaissance people of our time and in remembrance of our collaboration over more than 25 years, we mounted these spontaneous photography retrospectives of Karl’s photographs.” Both exhibitions, feature over 50 pieces, they are comprehensive, and present the full range of Lagerfeld’s output, from his celebrity portraits—whether of Nicole Kidman sprawled across a pink canopy bed or Arnold Schwarzenegger atop a motorcycle—to his street photography. EVIO BEAUTY By W. A. Muller
M
eet the millennial mogul who is taking the beauty industry by storm and empowering women along the way. Brandi Leifso is the founder and Chief Executive of Evio Beauty, a brand that is as ethically conscious as it is aesthetically beautiful. Founded with a purpose of social impact, this brand, spearheaded by Brandi, is on a mission to break down stigmas, promote female entrepreneurship, and eradicate animal cruelty and testing within the beauty space. Sounds like a tall order but for Brandi, it’s essential with her mission of “Creating a conscious future.” In what is absolutely a remarkable achievement, Brandi was recently chosen to speak at the Forbes Under 30 Global Women’s Summit being held on March 31-April 4, 2019 in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Selection for this event aligns her with the most powerful business leaders and inspiring minds around the world who are recognized for the change they create throughout society and in their own communities. At 28 years old, this is nothing short of impressive, but that’s not to say her rapid success came without prior hardships. At the age of 21, Brandi was living in a women’s shelter and had been out of the school system since she was 14. During her time at the shelter, her love of cosmetics and her passion for social change
24 | resident.com
collided and the concept of “Evio Beauty” was born. Since then, she has been on the fast track to success and there has been no turning back. Among her many entrepreneurial successes Brandi has established lasting relationships with over 50 coveted retailers including QVC, Credo, and Aillea as well as a direct to consumer model. She has secured a highly coveted spot as a 2018 alumni member of the esteemed Sephora Accelerate program (the only Canadian company to do so), and she has even raised more than $1.4m in pre-seed funding through her many strategic alliances and strong relationships. Her most recent alliance gained national acclaim when it was announced she had secured a partnership with one of the world’s largest cannabis companies, Aurora Cannabis. The partnership between Evio Beauty and Aurora is aimed at creating a new line of approved hemp seed oil based product formulations, as well as approved CBD based products and the brain-child of the partnership is launching in short order. Two new product lines respectively called Evio Skin and Evio Beauty will utilize the healing and rejuvenating properties of the hemp and cannabis plants. As the burgeoning cannabis and hemp industries are met with skepticism and appreciation, Brandi
is full steam ahead with her endeavor. She views any uncertainty as yet another stigma she can help break down. With this new business venture, Evio Beauty will continue to maintain its ethical standards by ensuring that their products are vegan, cruelty free, and gluten free. Implementing hemp has even improved their ability to be ethically conscious. They’ve eliminated animal by-products, increased ingredient transparency, and reduced overall the use of plastic. Brandi doesn’t just talk the talk of women’s empowerment, she walks the walk day in and day out. As a Toronto native, she jumped at the chance to support the Canadian Women’s Foundation and even partnered with them to donate $1 from every sale to the foundation. When you buy a new lipgloss or mascara from Evio Beauty, your money is championing the cause of the foundation that helps women in Canada move out of violence and poverty, and move into roles of confidence and leadership. As the world continues to evolve and millennials continue to advance into positions of power, keep your eye on Brandi Leifso. The mark she will leave on the beauty industry will be indelible, and the impact she will have on the next generation of women who hope to be in her shoes one day will be profound.

You Can Take the Girl Out of Britain, But You Can’t Take Her British Music Roots Out of the Girl By Julie Sagoskin Photographed By JAIME PAVON MUA | Fatimot Isadare @fatimotisadare Hair | Mary for @h2salonbrooklyn Stylist | Khalilah Beavers Shot on location at The World of McIntosh Townhouse | Worldofmcintosh.com
S
he might like her American boys, but the latest album from Grammy winning recording artist Estelle was inspired by her British roots and is composed of a romantic British reggae subgenre – with soul and R & B vibes of course! Lovers Rock is the fifth record for the British singer, songwriter, actress and humanitarian, and not only features deeply personal lyrics, but is also deeply personal for this multi-talented performer as it is the first album she has released on her own established 1980 label since partnering with VP Records.
This triple – make that quadruple threat – kicked off the first leg of her tour in Brooklyn and is going to be on the road again in April. When she’s not performing, representing new talent on her label, and expanding her empire, Estelle is active in her All of Me Foundation which provides partial scholarships to college students facing financial hardships. The foundation partners with local organizations that are empowering young people to ignite change in their communities and abroad by providing real life work experiences, internships,
and mentoring opportunities for high school and college aged students. The singer, who still refers to New York as her home base, based her album on the relationship between her Senegalese mother and Grenadian father who broke up only to get married two decades later, and how this shaped her and her own attitude towards life and love. Just take a listen for yourself, including the hit track Better, and you’ll see that Estelle just keeps getting, well, better!

What was your vision for your most recent tour? For this tour, I wanted to do it small and make it feel like I was in my living room in my mom’s house and have people come into my world, and I think that’s what we’ve done. It’s amazing to have my latest record up and ready to go and performing it and having people responding to it the way they are. American Boy took a full year before it clicked with people and became a hit so I anticipate that, but this album has been an experience. How does the magic of Estelle come together in the recording studio? All of my records are personal. It’s always been a matter of just sitting there and letting it be exactly what it needs to be and come up with three lines
48 | resident.com
here or there and when I get into the studio and hear an awesome beat, it all comes together with a melody I can turn into a song. It’s personal in the scariest way because I’m sitting there and it’s just me and I’m asking people if it is great or not. This record is on my label which I love, so it means four times more to me. I’m producing and working on my own records and work with songwriters so it’s never one person’s point of view. I’m involved in every ounce of the process from the beginning to the end. What was the inspiration behind Lovers Rock? This record was written about my parents and their relationship. They were together and had kids and then got back together twenty years later. I felt like
I was reliving my life and as I started writing this I wanted to learn a lesson and graduate per se. I realized I was living out what I had seen with my mom. When I first started recording it, it sounded like a repeat so I spoke to my mom and her advice was telling me the real stories behind the versions of what I was told as a kid and growing up. My mom and I have a great relationship so she told me what really happened and what was really going on. I looked at everything from an empathetic standpoint and started thinking about what I was supposed to be doing versus what I was doing, and about not making the same mistakes. I love the point of their love story – you can love who you love when you love them and sometimes the person you thought was for you isn’t and that’s okay too.
resident.com | 49
cover
How cathartic was it for you to make this album? I had multiple aha moments in the process! I got a new perspective, it was like therapy. The universe knows who guides who and when I see an issue I like to move on, I don’t like to dwell or go back and forth. What is the vibe of Lovers Rock? Who did you make it for? It’s a mixture of R & B and soul, it’s warm, loving energy. If thinking of power with love makes you feel empowered, this is for you. If you’ve been trying to figure out life and love, this is for you. This is a no judgment album for everyone, it’s a great vibe, it’s personal, it’s real. Which coast is the best coast? I’m based in LA now – I like the sunshine – but I lived in New York for almost ten years and lived in both states for a while and have been back and forth. New York is my home base because that’s where I first moved, where I was first embraced. It almost feels like I never left when I’m there working and hanging with my friends. Do you still touch down in London town? My family is still in London so I go back and forth a lot, I miss my nieces and nephews, but I don’t miss London. Moving to Brooklyn felt like South London to me!
50 | resident.com
cover
52 | resident.com
What are you go to spots in the city that are cool enough for any American boy…or girl? I love going to real New York places like Café Habana on Prince and Elizabeth and Miss Lily’s, and just walking around Soho and the Lower East Side and the West Village. I have some friends who live in Harlem and Brooklyn and there are some little spots where we can kick it and don’t have to bother about being dressed up, I can just hang out and they know me. What inspired you to start your own label? I started the label because someone helped me along and gave me a hand when I needed a hand. I didn’t have anyone in the beginning to push or promote me so I started with that mentality. I have some artists on my label who are amazing and
brilliant themselves, they are great musicians and performers. People on the LA scene know them really well so now it’s just about getting them to that next level. Who have been your favorite collaborators? I had so much fun working with everybody on my album. I want to work with everyone. I’m a fan of reggae music and everyone I asked came on board to do a record with me with super ease. Tarrus Riley is like a walking book of music so he came up with melodies and every melody was brilliant. You run into people every so often who you want to stay close to cause you can always learn from them. What’s next for you?
I think of myself as a mogul in the making, or in the process. I look at it as this is no different than what Jay-Z and Puffy have been doing but women don’t get that title per se. We’re building our own empires. I’m also moving into acting and TV and film as well as developing the label and doing more behind the scenes music. I love music, I’ll never stop doing it. I just co-directed, wrote and scripted a three-part video coming out on YouTube called The Mike and Deen story. I’m also going to be doing some more directorial projects for some of my other friends and artists as well as developing different things and I’m just excited about everything. I just finished the first part of the tour and the second one is coming in April.

WORLD OF MCINTOSH TOWNHOUSE A Dinner Series Which Never Sounded So Good By Julie Sagoskin

ant to have dinner where Heidi Klum and Seal used to call home? The exclusive dinner series at McIntosh Townhouse let’s you do just that, as the supermodel and singer’s former pad turned sound space is the ultimate spot to sip and swoon! These dinner party partnerships held in the McIntosh’s five-story 12,000 square foot townhouse sound pretty amazing – literally – because McIntosh is known for their unparalleled sound systems. After all, McIntosh Group has been the creator of high end audio systems and industry trailblazers for 70 years. They’re even behind some of the most iconic moments in music history, including the inaugural Woodstock Music Festival in 1969 followed by the complete production of the Grateful Dead’s Wall of Sound tour in 1974. When you step into the World of McIntosh Townhouse, which is located behind a discreet door in Soho, you never know who, or what you might find! The

décor for each dining event at this audio centric space is just as unique as the playlist – where else you will be able to experience world class food while enjoying a DJ spinning beats in an ultra trendy space which served as a backdrop for season 2 of Mr. Robot and music videos for John Mayer and Beyonce? With fun and eclectic items throughout, including a piece of furniture from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, this place takes you to another plateau – a very sexy and intriguing plateau. The World of McIntosh team offers exclusive artist performances, tasting menus with cocktail pairings, synchronized swimmers performing in their indoor pool, a rooftop terrace and even a post-dinner listening room experience. The dinner series in this luxury townhouse serves up an audio, visual and culinary feast like you’ve never seen or heard before. Each dining event is taken up a few notches, or rather decibels, with their ultimate audio experience, so you can enjoy
your meal with music blaring out of world class speakers. After all, World of McIntosh is a one of a kind space which serves the world’s most internationally renowned companies and industry titans with a one of a kind experience. Before becoming a celebrity home – James Franco also lived in the space – the building, which features high ceilings, an indoor pool with exposed brick walls and a whimsical rooftop, is not your average space! The industrial chic townhouse was originally an energy hub substation in the 1920s, powering the lower Manhattan area for over 50 years before being converted into a warehouse that served as an art gallery for the artist community that dominated SoHo in the ‘80s and ‘90s. The building evolved once again when a filmmaker purchased the property and had it transformed into a unique high-end residence. In 2015 the McIntosh Group took over and created the World of McIntosh, and you’re sure to feel like you’ve entered another world when you enter their world!
The immersive space showcases their state-of-the art McIntosh brand products including Sonus faber, Sumiko and Pro-ject Audio Systems, and has multiple private listening areas all in beautifully designed spaces where they intertwine audio, art, design and food – you’ve never seen, or especially heard anything like this before. Their most recent partnership took place with Tokyo Record Bar when they held a luxe listening and dining experience on Thursday, February 21st . The underground listening room of Tokyo Record Bar came to life on the world’s best sound systems as guests chose a tune from a vinyl playlist, just like in the restaurant! Guests were able to drink their champagne while feeling ready do dance to the music in this intimate dining experience which was curated entirely by the team from Tokyo Record Bar, featuring their signature 7-course menu, plus a champagne bar and even a sake sommelier on site! The team prepared each course in the McIntosh kitchen, which means they were cooking in the same spot where Heidi (or her chef) made meals fit for a model. The space was transformed into what felt like a Hollywood wedding with a canopy of pink flowers for the intimate dinner which featured music pumping in the background from a system costing over a quarter of a million dollars - an experience which heightens each and every sense. Guests even took home their own vinyl record as a memento, though it might not sound the same without McIntosh equipment! Since opening their doors in 2017, Tokyo Record Bar has been known for their dedication to quality and obsession with music, food and booze, making their partnership with McIntosh a perfect match. To continue their relationship, the entire restaurant will feature the finest audio gear when the two brands team up, turning Tokyo Record Bar into a year-round extension of the World of McIntosh Townhouse Experience. While they play host to fashion events, photo shoots and music video filming, this private dinner series is the ultimate way for McIntosh to partner with brands and restaurants which fit their vision and allow them to use their sound systems as a way to elevate each and every sense – and even make you realize new ones. 214 Lafayette St. New York, NY 10012 212.364.0219 worldofmcintosh.com

ROBERT’SNaked STEAKHOUSE Steaks By Simon Gusev

ould you like a lap steak? Meet Robert’s Steakhouse, where strippers are also on the menu.
Darkly lighted, finished in red-and-purple palette, the two-storied area of the Penthouse club, named for the magazine, is famous for beautiful women, that charge you $20 a song for their company, and, recently, according to food critics at The New York Times and Vogue, for its flavourful aged steaks. Moderately loud rock soundtracks with a share of humor like Sympathy for the Devil or Love Is a Battlefield spices up the space, where personnel is always attentive to the customers yet not annoying. Girls visit guests to say hello, to have dinner, to chat, or to agree on table-side dances later in the evening. All waiters are men, hence, you will not get into an awkward lap-dance arrangement situation. Listed among Michelin-starred list of most expensive restaurants in the U.S., Robert’s is led by a

seasoned chef Mr. Lang, whose resume includes Guy Savoy in Paris and Daniel on the Upper East Side. Created by Lang, the menu include classic dishes like caesar salad, shrimp cocktail, creamed spinach and the chief’s personal experiments that you should definitely try. Eager for a delicious dinner? For an appetizer, we recommend you sample a seafood salad and a tuna tartare, served with bonito flakes, nori, sesame seeds and sriracha, a Thai chili paste. Your entree MUST include at least one of the steaks or lamb chops, which tempting presentation and marvelous taste that promise to turn any vegetarian to inveterate meat lover. But if you are not ready to sacrifice your ideology for a piece of forbidden steak, take a look at brussels sprouts or onion rings, which are not necessarily a healthier choice. And don’t exclude a dessert option, a buttery nipple. This extraordinary desert involves a women spreading your laps like moveable bridges, providing clearance for pouring a combination

The average check runs up to $516 and it is not the food, a New York strip steak at the restaurant is priced at $53, but drinks that cost you a pretty penny. The wine list is formal and limited with choices, but you will definitely find majestic reds, ranging from $65 to $1,000, for your steaks. Between $200 to $750 for a regular bottle, Champagne may be a wonderful addition to any occasion. A bottle of Remy Martin Louis XIII cognac will cost you $3,200. To indulge in a fine dining experience with improperly yet pleasingly dressed women and tremendous steaks, call at least a week ahead. 603 W 45th St. New York, NY 10036 212.245.0002 robertsatlanticcity.com

ATLAS KITCHEN The Atlas of Chinese Cuisine By Simon Gusev
W
ho doesn’t enjoy a classic Chinese takeaway night? With Atlas Kitchen, located at 258 West 109th Street, between Broadway and Amsterdam, you might choose to dine in so you can spend time in the wonderful, bright space with artistic ambience while enjoying your favorite dishes.
The ultimate place for authentic Hunan (and other dishes from across 7 regions) cuisine, Atlas Kitchen strives to present the Chinese dining experience in a new, high-end light. Atlas Kitchen is a mustvisit, must-see, and must-overeat place for oriental tasty food.
Atlas Kitchen collaborated with artist Qiu Anxiong to design the modern space from scratch. Created with a comforting and contemporary aura in mind, the restaurant boasts a copper map of mountains and seas hanging on the wall. The private dining area is filled with sea blue murals that act as a backdrop to the gray seating, reinforcing the contrast along with the cultural meaning. Unique design is not the only feature that distinguishes Atlas Kitchen from other Chinese restaurants in Manhattan. China is one huge, melting pot with centuries of culinary history and influences. The country didn’t open up until the 1980s, now it shares authentic Chinese food with the rest of the world. In many eateries throughout the U.S., the dishes are frequently Americanized, and that’s what makes Atlas Kitchen special - authenticity of cuisine. Seasoned with a 20-plus-year work experience and recognized as a first tier chef in his home country, Kaiyuan Li challenges the very notion of food Americanization by providing customers with a unquiely Chinese dining adventure. However, you may still find Americanized options on the menu, which makes the restaurant a more inclusive space for all types of foodies. To truly indulge in the colorful palette of authentic flavor profiles, we recommend you start with deliciously crunchy chicken feet with two choices of spices, soft-shelled turtle with safflower or sautéed eggplant—a customer favorite. The combination of eggplant and egg yolk creates a flawless heavenly flavor that subsides only hours later. Then, proceed either with sauteed chicken with ginger, which is simply divine, or choose any sea option, prepared with fresh ingredients from local markets. For those who crave spicy food, Atlas Kitchen will definitely spice up their dining experience with white radish lamb and spicy pork feet. For dessert, sample gourmet Italian gelato. The dessert offers an unconventional combination of earl grey and lychee flavors. Worth mentioning, Atlas serves warm lemonade water, which constitutes an integral part of many Chinese people’s eating habits.

RUSSIAN SAMOVAR Russian Cuisine Rich In History & Entertainment By Peter Elston
R
ussia Samovar, the elegant, 100-seat eatery in the heart of the theater district, has been distinguishing itself as one of New York’s premier nightspots for over three decades. Founded in 1986 and previously coowned by ballet legend, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Nobel Prize winner for poetry, Joseph Brodsky, its 19th-century feel, complete with Russian folk prints and green and red shades, has become an epicurean epicenter for discerning patrons from every walk of life, along with many famous Russian poets and writers who keep coming back for an exceptional dining experience second to none. Russian Samovar is well-known for its 25 flavored vodkas, including ginger, horseradish, lemon, and cranberry along with mouthwatering appetizers. Selections range from Beluga and Ostera caviar, Blini (crepes) filled with salmon or caviar, the Assorted Fish Platter (in-house cured Salmon Gravlax with dill, Smoked Atlantic Salmon and Smoked Butterfish), Vol-au-Vent (a wild mushroom

puff pastry), traditional Borscht, and Pelmeni Stroganoff (veal and chicken dumplings with sirloin tips in a creamy mushroom sauce). The restaurant also serves a theater pre-fixe menu, available Monday through Friday until 7pm. The ideal spot before or after a show, you can get a 10% discount on all food items simply by presenting your ticket from any Broadway show. These include appetizers like Olivier Salad, and Eggplant Caviar; entrées such as Roasted Duck, and Beef Stroganoff, and a choice of Smetannik Cake or Ice Cream for dessert. You can also enjoy an expertly prepared predinner cocktail at the bar such as the Russian Beauty, featuring raspberry puree and crisp Prosecco or a martini made with any flavor of Russian Samovar’s house-infused vodkas. Currently owned by Roman Kaplan and managed by his daughter Vlada Von Shats and her two sons, another major draw of Russian Samovar’s 256 West 52nd Street location is its deeply
entrenched show business roots. Besides currently being a mecca for Russian writers and poets, it was also the former site of Jilly’s—the eponymous celebrity watering hole once owned by Frank Sinatra’s friend and former bodyguard, Jilly Rizzo. In fact, the Chairman of the Board held many personal concerts there, along with spending time with the Rat Pack and playing countless games of baccarat. These days, this tradition continues thanks to singers like Liza Minnelli and Cyndi Lauper who still occasionally drop in for an impromptu performance. Since Russian Samovar also attracts many musicians, actors and writers from Russia and all over the world, a classically trained pianist performs nightly and poetry readings held throughout the year. 256 W 52nd St. New York, NY 10019 212.757.0168 russiansamovar.com

Sauce Pizzeria
Uskudar
Senso Unico
DINING OUT: NYC By Simon Gusev
Uskudar Centuries ago, Turkey was the place of epic Iliadic battles; now it is home to mouth-watering, delicious food, and it has appeared in the backyard of NYC. Turkish cuisine’s mysterious tastes await you at Uskudar, an Upper East Side small restaurant named for a neighborhood in Istanbul. Indulge your taste buds in traditional, easy-on-thewallet flavors made with love by Chef Ibrahim Ozdemir. Make sure to sample Hunkar Begendi, lamb chunks simmered in homemade tomato sauce and fresh herbs that are served on pureed eggplant. Don’t let the bare-bones nature of the exterior design fool you. Uskudar is a must-try.
Sauce Pizzeria What can be better than a classic cheesy pizza? Only a thin-crust-style pie with a side of Grandmother’s gravy. Available at the Sauce Pizzeria, the newest counter-service spot from Adam Elzer, pie options include Classic Cheese, Biellese Pepperoni, Upside-Down Cheese Pie, Heritage Sausage Pie, and Vodka Pie. The thin-crust pizzeria, decorated with an unconventional mix of images of the Virgin Mary, Elzer’s ancestors and New York City hip-hop, seats up to 22 people. We personally tasted the menu and guarantee you’ll be surprised how juicy pizza crust can be. What’s sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander, right?
Senso Unico Many think Italian cuisine became too basic to impress because pizza and pasta infiltrated our diet to the extent of mediocrity. Vincenzo and Raula Garofalo, the owners of a small Italian restaurant in the heart of Sunnyside, aim to prove us wrong. Senso Unico, which means “one way” in Italian, focuses on modern Neapolitan cuisine with an American accent. The interior design implies a cozy, warm ambience suitable for any occasion. The restaurant boasts an extensive wine list and exquisite cocktails. Don’t miss out on the Heineken-flavored tiramisu and meat carpaccio with tomatoes and herbs. At Senso Unico, Italian cuisine is great again.

every one of which, without exception, features a panoramic view of the soaring skyline across the river, free WiFi access, LCD TVs with cable and premium channels, free bottled water, and coffee/ tea makers. Standard deluxe suites are decent in size and command majestic views through the floor-toceiling angled windows. Featuring a living area with a dining table for four, and a separate guest powder room, the deluxe suites offer guests the ultimate in sophisticated luxury. also in The House, is the reasonable choice. In this suite, the views of Mount Etna seem closer than from any other room due to the multiple mirrors placed throughout. Themes of both elegance and serenity may be traced within its glass interiors. In Zash Country Boutique Hotel & Spa, wine cellars are not just for wine, but for guests to stay. Transformed into a modern space for relaxation, Wine Cellar, previously the rusty wine-vault, is adjacent to The House and includes a threeroom lodging space. Another option is the Green Room, where you can practically extend your hand from the window or massive glass doors and pick a fresh orange from the garden. Implying the feeling of relaxation with every detail of its interior design, the three-room minimalistic space is entirely painted in grey. Indulge in a delicious dining experience with the hotel’s signature restaurant. Hypnotizing its guests with its rustic appearance, the restaurant is in what was previously known as the wine chamber. The restaurant’s interior design, finished in an intimate palette of colors and shapes, inevitably sparks romance. Talented Chef Giuseppe Raciti and his team have made the restaurant known for its ability to slow things down and to take the entire experience in. A moment here is never wasted; rather, it is a chance to not only ignite something
new but also to simply reflect on being there. At the spacious Spa, located close to The House, guests can relax on a massage table, leaving all their worries behind. The combination of nature and the wine cellar ambience, where the spa is also located, is a wonderful combination for your comfort. Along with the sauna available for guests at the Spa, hammam has the orange bloom scent for complete relaxation. Not interested in a massage or indoor heat? On a great sunny day, nothing is sweeter than to take a swim in the resort’s outside pool. Designed with volcanic stones and a wooden deck on its edges, the hotel’s pool has Mountain Etna’s touch. Along with sunbeds and chaise-lounges available for your comfort, the rectangular pool is surrounded with shrubs that provide shade and privacy. A bar by the pool serves traditional and modern drinks with a twist, providing a refreshing experience as well as shelter from the burning sunrays. For night owls, the pool is available 24 hours and is illuminated with floor spotlights, providing a lovely glow for your aqueous night out. Zash Country Boutique Hotel & Spa is a marvelous place to visit, both for business and leisure. Located in the Sicilian countryside, the hotel presents a great opportunity to take a break from your daily routine in style.

CABO Auberge Resorts By W. A. Muller

hen traveling to Los Cabos, look no further than the Esperanza and Chileno Bay resorts. Both resorts are part of the Auberge network, which is comprised of only the most luxurious hotels that one could dream of. Upon entry into the Chileno Bay resorts, your mind quickly becomes at ease. The modern architecture, pristine designs, and vibrant white buildings provide for an unforgettable experience. Chileno Bay resorts boasts an incredibly long infinity pool overlooking the ocean. With chairs both inside and outside of the pool, you and your guests can have the most relaxing days. During the day, you can power up at TnT, a restaurant right next to the pool. Be sure to get all the different tacos on the menu, as well as their delicious guac! You will not be disappointed. Also, at night, dining at Comal is the pinnacle of mexican fusion cuisine.
72 | resident.com
With fire pits, and heated lamps available when needed, you can spend your entire night enjoying drinks and food while overlooking the ocean and conversing with family and friends. Moreover, the Tom Fazio designed golf course has ocean view on every single hole. This golf course is not only in impeccable condition, but every few holes, there are little houses with a plethora of snacks, food, alcoholic drinks, and basically anything else you could ever need. Definitely make sure to take part in the tequila tradition on the first hole, where you take a shot in a frozen ice cube, which you then try to throw into a hanging bucket about 30 yards away! Chileno Bay has everything you could imagine, and more, when thinking about a luxurious vacation filled with amazing memories and experiences. The Esperanza may be the most unique resort the mind can dream of. With only 57 guestrooms,
the Esperanza is the pinnacle of both paradise and privacy, making it perfect for both family vacations and romantic couple getaways. The Esperanza is the only private beach resort in all of Los Cabos. While staying here, guests can relax during the day by one of the 2 incredible pools in the resort. The pool areas are perfect for lounging in the sun during the day, but maybe even more incredible is the view at night. The nighttime lighting of the resort, and especially surrounding the pools, can only be described by one word: breathtaking. The casitas at Esperanza provide guests with an exceptional sanctuary to cool down after a long day of relaxation. The casitas all have ocean views, and giant balconies to hang on to watch the sunset. Moreover, there are also a few villas, most of which have personal pools, making it possible to relax with your family without even leaving the comfort of the home. The Esperanza staff is professional and exceptional, always there
Esperanza
Hacienda
to help make your stay even more amazing. In conclusion, the property of the Esperanza is to die for. With cliffside dining at Cocina Del Mar, to beachside infinity pool and hottub access, the Esperanza makes you feel like royalty, from check in to check out. Once you come once, you are hooked for life Hacienda Beach Club & Residences Cabo is an excellent destination for couples and families, easy to get to with nonstop flights from many major cities and perfect weather any month of the year. These things truly make it the perfect choice for a beach getaway. Hacienda Beach Club & Residences is a great 5-star hotel on a private stretch of Medano Beach in the heart of Los Cabos – close to restaurants and shops. The hotel has stunning views of Land’s End and the Sea of Cortez, where you can take a private boat tour on the water and even see some animals. Hacienda
is also near the Puerto Paraiso Shopping Mall and Cabo del Sol Ocean Golf Course for days off from the beach. Another perk of the Hacienda is that many restaurants are within walking distance like The Office, Cabo Wabo Cantina, and Bar Esquina, making the hotel perfectly situated. Hacienda offers family-friendly villas and suites ranging from 1-bedrooms to 4-bedrooms that are steps away from the beach. Each villa has indoor and outdoor spaces, including full kitchens, living room, and bedrooms. These villas are spacious, beachy and luxurious and can comfortably fit an entire family better than a small hotel room. These villas make Cabo feel like home. Hacienda has a gorgeous infinity pool and hot tub that overlooks Medano Beach. The hotel restaurant Hacienda Cocina y Cantina is conveniently located next to the pool and
overlooking the beach. The Cocina y Cantina restaurant serves Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner with options like chips and guacamole, fish tacos, and margaritas making it a perfect spot for all hours of the day. After a long day of swimming, tanning, and boating nothing feels better than going to the spa. The Hacienda spa offers a plethora of different services like massages, body therapies, facials, manicures and pedicures. The facility also features a steam room, sauna, and fitness center with complimentary yoga and fitness classes. Overall, my stay at Hacienda Beach Club & Residences was an excellent experience for a fivestar hotel in a very prime location in Los Cabos.

GABBIANO AZZURRO Break Free of Frozen Chains By Kenza Salahdine
T
he fresh, cool flows of air are filled with sounds of tweeting birds. The sunrays pierce the crystally blue, cloudless sky... This is what the wonderful season of spring feels like in the aftermath of roaring blizzards that have left slush and dirt on your newly-acquired leather shoes. Unfortunately, we cannot change the weather or buy you a new pair of shoes, but we know just the right place to find “real” spring. Located in one of the most picturesque places in northeast Sardinia, the scenic gulf town of Golfo Aranci, Hotel Gabbiano Azzurro is the ultimate savior for your spring expectations. The hotel boasts 80 rooms and suites, which overlook glorious Mediterranean landscapes, and provides exceptional service along with wonderful amenities. Up to relaxing under the Italian sun? Offering a direct access to a white sandy beach, Gabbiano Azzurro Hotel & Suites is located on the seafront of Sardinia’s famous Emerald Coast. Leisurely stroll along the cozy fisherman village, a 5-minute walk from the hotel property offering an entertaining shopping experience called La Dolce Vita Golfo Aranci. The hotel is a 20-minute drive from Olbia Airport and within a stone’s throw of the most stunning beaches of the Golfo Aranci that can be reached in just a few minutes. Keep in mind, Sardinia is an island that strikes its visitors with a wild and pure nature. Explore Sardinia by visiting the Maddalena National Park that encompasses Maddalena Archipelago and its “seven sister,” with its lively seabeds that provide an incredible scuba-diving experience. Fortunately, you can

easily access the BonAriA sailing yacht excursion to the famous Archipelago of La Maddalena with a visit of the Maddalena Village straight from the hotel. We also recommend you visit Archeologic Park of Arzachena, where you can follow the steps of the ancient past of Sardinia’s Nuraghe, the main type of ancient megalithic edifice found on the island, and Tombs of the Giants, a gallery grave built during the Bronze Age by the ancient Nuragic civilization. And, finally, don’t miss out on wine tasting at one of the local wineries. Guests are welcome to choose from the wide range of rooms with amazing views of the Mediterranean and Tavolara Island that seems like a massive limestone is springing out of the sea. Boasting furnished balconies or patios, rooms and suites are as charming and come with 4-star superior amenities such as flat-screen TVs with international satellite channels, WIFI access, and minibars. The interior design may look too old-fashioned, but, remember, Sardinia is a gemstone of Italian traditions. Radiating a romantic vibe, the property is ideal for couples. Gabbiano Azzurro Hotel & Suites offers not one, but two 24/7 pools with attached whirlpools and poolside bar service, allowing guests to enjoy a glass of excellent wine, such as Vermentino di Gallura or Cannonau, without leaving the pleasant water. Don’t forget to rent beach loungers and umbrellas to enjoy the warm weather without having to burn to a crisp.
Flavorful cuisine will surely satisfy the most demanding palates with fresh natural ingredients and delicious recipes, brought to life with local products. Mediterranean and Sardinian cuisine traditions are mixed together by Chef Daniele Sechi to create a signature menu for the on-property eatery, Blù Restaurant. The majestic, fairy location, only three meters above the Sardinian sea, is a prologue to an unforgettable symphony of the Italian gourmet experience. The menu always changes, but one indispensable dish is always available for customers. You cannot leave the island without tasting La Fregula Nera, a unique Sardinian pasta plate at Blù Restaurant. Managed also by Chef Daniele Sechi, the White Restaurant offers daily a la carte with a focus on well-balanced cuisine of Italian, mediterranean and vegetarian traditions, especially Sardinian specialties. We recommend you book tables in advance to overlook the 180 degrees of stunning panoramic views from the restaurant’s large windows. With its tremendous cuisine, ancient historical sights, and almost scenic views, Sardinia is a must visit, especially in spring when the the island pampers travelers with warm temperatures and caressing rays of the sun. Embrace the season of new beginnings without heavy coats and wool scarfs but with Gabbiano Azzurro Hotel & Suites, a blooming opportunity in the firmament of the New York City brumal fairytale. hotelgabbianoazzurro.com

What inspired you to realize your entrepreneurial potential? It’s been a long journey, growing up both my parents passed away early on, so life started off challenging. I had to grow up really fast. My mother who was my rock and very involved in everything I did, passed away when I was 15 so I had a new mentality on life, I had to become responsible and make decisions early on. My motivation was making my parents and people around me proud and I was always open to new people and new surroundings and I think that’s what helped me build my entrepreneurial career. I learned to become very self-sufficient as well as how to rely on other people,
build trust and become an individual of your word. My big break was purchasing real estate in San Francisco in 2007/2008 when the market crashed and it returned for me very well a hundred times over my investment. When I saw those types of things could happen in the real estate world, it changed my existence as an athlete. What made you start thinking of a future beyond football? As an athlete, you think that’s where your income will come from, but the bulk of your income will probably come from off the field. I was intrigued with marketing and advertising contracts with the teams and stadiums and naming rights and starting doing my own homework and mentally transitioned into a businessman. I had a couple of endorsements at the time and realized I wanted to turn myself into a business, so I hired a couple people who could help me when Twitter was just getting off the ground and social media wasn’t what it is now. I had worked with executives at Nike and it changed my mind set by showing me what the business world is like and how multi-billion dollar businesses are run. I was intrigued by how guys like Robert Kraft and other people get to run major sports organizations. I started my marketing company

early, landed big Stan Lee of Marvel Comics. I became a liason for him and also for organizations inspired by amazing entrepreneurs and from there began testing the market in different things and got involved in venture capital. As a rookie in the NFL, I had good people around me and financial investors who helped me see the different side of business. How were you able to transition from a successful NFL career to an equally successful venture in the business world? Growing up playing sports you think about what you want your life to be, but when you really start to get a feel for life you begin to understand things a little better, so I laid my foundation but my brain was always taking me different places. I always knew I wanted to own a business so I was just open to a different side of life. I think I’ve transitioned well. Business and sports are equal when it comes to being productive in your everyday life – it’s all about being dependable, and how well you can you lead and direct. What is the best advice you ever got and what do you tell other athletes? I was told once, you can be Cameron the football player for another 5 or 6 years, or you can be Cameron the CEO for the next 50 or 60 years. Entrepreneurialism is starting to be the next big things for athletes. I talk to a lot of my colleagues who don’t pay attention to transitioning to life after the game. I get questions about how are you doing that, how did you get into that, and I always explain
that you shouldn’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone as an athlete – more than an athlete is the mantra of the moment. How do you foresee combining your love of sports and businessman acumen? Any kind of sports franchise, whether it be the NFL or soccer or NBA is in my 15-20 year future, but I know I have to start making that decision now. What are your current projects? We’ve been working on a theme park project for the past three and a half years. In terms of conceptual design, it’s a very exciting themed project coming to the Arizona area and most importantly, it’s based on my core principles which are fitness, family and fun – I want to be able to get people out of the house together as a family. It’s not just about enjoying the park, it’s about being able to be outdoors with mother nature and adding value to the city and other cities it will eventually come to. We also have a venture capital fund that we will be expanding throughout quarter 1 and quarter 2 of 2019 – we will be focusing on celebrity based investments. A lot of times as an athlete it’s hard to find trustworthy people, and you often hear about athletes being scammed out of their money, so as a former athlete with quality capital partners, we wanted to focus on celebrities and consumer sectors to where if athletes need extra capital for their projects, we would work hand in hand and introduce
them to our fund and other funds and help them do well in a bigger or even international market. I have always been inspired to help my fellow athletes no matter what sport they played or what gender they are. We want to be a liaison into the venture capital world – their agents don’t always have the correct advice and people don’t necessarily know how to approach a sports star. The real wealth is in the knowledge of how we can pass that along and also help with start ups. We also have numerous ongoing programs in my organization which help kids get interested in venture capital; we can draw these kids in with sportsmanship. Were you surprised when you heard that The Game Stands Tall, a book based on your former teammate and best friend’s murder was being made into a movie? Peter Guber, the owner of the Golden State Warriors who was involved in Sony Pictures, found the book (of the same name which came out in 2003) in his locker and said hey, we should make this movie. They called me in 2009 and said they wanted to tell my story so I started working with some of the writers and the author who is a great mentor as well. We were able to motivate a lot of people through the personal story of my best friend who was killed and the movie gave us another platform to reach more kids – Cameron’s best friend, and De La Salle team mate, Terrance Kelly, was murdered two days before they were both to report to Oregon for football practice and enter college.

RALLYE AICHA DES GAZELLES DU MAROC A Unique Adventure for the Modern and Courageous Woman By Elizabeth Darwen
Y
ear after year, the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc has been a pioneer, never ceasing to grow, constantly developing and evolving with the times, always faithful to its founding values: courage, the desire to push one’s limits, loyalty, solidarity and social commitment. The 29th annual event will take place between March 15-30, 2019 among the rolling dunes of the stunning Moroccan desert.
Gazelles, the rally also respects its scenic host country and its people. Coeur de Gazelles works on projects that meet the needs of Morocco’s remote populations: medical care, education, the environment and sustainable development, job training for women, improving living conditions, and a desire to spread joy by distributing donations.
A unique concept with thoughtful and impeccable execution, the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc is the first international off-road rally race of its kind exclusively for women. Since 1990, it has brought together women between the ages of 18 and 71 from more than 30 different countries, who will embark on an adventure of a lifetime from Nice in the South of France on March 15th, 2019 and onward to the beginning of a nine-day rally competition in the Moroccan desert.

A COMPASS AND SOME COMMON SENSE Every morning the Gazelles receive a «Road Book». This document contains only the geographic coordinates or headings and distances of the day’s initial checkpoints. Forget about GPS, phones and other modern communication tools: using a compass, a navigational plotter and maps, they plot their route and plan their itinerary. TO WIN THE COMPETITION The rankings are determined by calculating the extra kilometers driven (distance driven between check points minus crow flies distance) and penalty kilometers for any check points not reached. The winning team is the one that finds the greatest number of checkpoints while driving the least number of kilometers.
Each vehicle is equipped with satellite tracking system, powerful enough to provide minute by minute tracking, so even without seeing a vehicle for hours, the women are never alone. By the end of the experience, participants—known as “Gazelles”—have created adventure-filled new memories, deepened their bonds with their teammates, and pushed themselves further than they ever thought they could. The rally also features an electric vehicle “E-Gazelle Vinci Immobilier” category, with participants called “E-Gazelle.” The Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc boasts an ISO 14001 Environment Management System (EMS) certification, an internationally recognized environmental management standard taking into consideration the immediate and long term environmental impacts of an organization’s products, services, and processes.

BENTLEY MEEKER Lighting Artist By Bennett Marcus Museum Shows Lighting artist Bentley Meeker has two exhibitions opening almost simultaneously in two different countries. “Exploring Light” opens March 6 at 517 W. 37th Street with Garvey|Simon gallery in New York City to coincide with Armory Week, and “Immaculate Refraction,” a museum exhibition, launches March 23 at Penticton Art Gallery in British Columbia. The two shows are similar in size, each with 40 illuminated sculptural works consisting of one large installation along with smaller pieces. But the timing is coincidental. Meeker had planned the Canadian exhibition for May, but the Penticton Art Gallery organizers convinced him that the March through May period is the museum’s bestattended of the year. Meeker had previously participated in a group show there called #Grassland and now they’ve invited him back for a solo exhibit encompassing the entire museum.
Exploration of Light The world is moving more and more towards LED, and Meeker believes that people don’t have
94 | resident.com
an understanding of it. “These works, generally speaking, juxtapose different color temperatures of LED against one another so that we can have an exploration into what the light that we’re absolutely putting into our lives en masse really is,” he explains. This new body of work is a commentary on the state of light in today’s society, and where the it’s headed in the future. “It’s not an opinionated, judgmental commentary, but simply an exploratory commentary.” Indeed, after more than 20 years as one of the top lighting designers in the U.S., with clients like Lincoln Center, the Guggenheim Museum and Robert De Niro, Meeker still feels he has much to say about light and its properties. “Light right now is probably at the greatest inflection point that it’s been in in our lifetime and it’s shifting,” he says. “From the beginning of time, light had only ever been created by something burning, and now, for the first time ever, it’s not.” LED lighting, which is created through the mixing of chemical compounds and had until recently been relegated to commercial settings, like offices and stores, is now being used in the home.
“There’s something fascinating about the exploration of light that’s now not burning, and what it actually is, what we can do with it, how we can look at it, how we can use it. What a phenomenal opportunity for a lighting artist to be working in the world of light right now.” The White House and Burning Man While Meeker’s commercial work has been extensive, he feels that his exploration into light is just starting. Creating artwork was the natural extension for exploring the medium further without constraints. In addition to his projects for private clients, Meeker’s public work projects have included “The “H” in Harlem,” a large-scale public art installation suspended under the 125th St and 12th Ave viaduct in Harlem, and a 2012 light installation at the Whitney Museum’s former uptown location. He was the also first artist to have a piece in the Whitney’s new downtown location. In addition, Meeker has been a multi-year featured artist at the Burning Man festival in Nevada, and in 2016, he was directly commissioned by Michelle Obama to create a light sculpture for the Nordic state dinner at The White House. bentleymeekerart.com

JANEL TANNA Actress & Maxim Cover Girl of the Year By Bennett Marcus
J
anel Tanna is an actress, producer and screenwriter who, in just four years, has appeared in more than twenty projects. She has won 14 acting awards at film festivals around the world plus two writing awards. She has also received an additional nine acting nominations. Not bad for someone who almost never went down that “what if” path. Tanna went to New York City for interviews in another field but it was always her dream to take a class at the Lee Strasberg Institute, so she put in an application. “I got accepted to Strasberg the day after I went in for an interview,” she says. Sign from Above She boarded a plane to return home, and the airline wouldn’t let her miniature husky, Hershey Smore, into the cabin; insisting he go in cargo. Tanna refused, and after many hours, the airline finally gave the go-ahead, and Janel and her pet boarded another flight that ended up never taking off due to an engine malfunction. She took that as a sign and started what she initially thought would be a few months of acting training. Shortly after her Strasberg classes began, Janel auditioned for an indie film and got the role, and the director and team were very supportive. “They really allowed me to discover the truth in my role and believed in me. I ended up getting nominated

for Best Supporting Actress at a film festival for Savior; my very first role.” Modeling Around the World While acting was a “what if” that seemed as though it would never come into fruition, modeling is something that just happened . “I have met some amazing people in fashion,” she says. During New York Fashion Week she walked in several runway shows with more to come. This started when Janel’s friend, a top U.K. makeup artist, encouraged her to model. She went on a few auditions and quickly booked a L’Oréal hair job. After that she started doing more runway shows, including three seasons of Couture Fashion week, Couture in Paris, France, and again this season with Couture, EPN and New York Fashion Week. “I like to set goals and plan ahead but at the same time I live day to day,” she says. Janel entered the 2019 Maxim Cover Girl modeling competition – winning over 30,000 other applicants and taking home a $25,000 prize, which she’ll use to help finance her next film project. Famed photographer Gilles Bensimon shot the 2019 Jan/Feb magazine cover. Sienna’s Choice The first film she created, produced and was the lead actress, Sienna’s Choice, which looked at end-of-life care and decision-making. Sienna’s Choice garnered rave reviews and won over thirty awards
and nominations at film festivals around the globe. In her recent short, Intervention, just shot in California by director Linda Palmer, she plays an addict going through withdrawal. She joins lead producer/actress Julia Silverman as a co-producer as well. The film touches on the opioid crisis. She explains as an actress “I prefer to be a chameleon. It really gives me satisfaction when I feel the truth deep when each of these personas come to life. When it comes to writing or producing films, I tend to focus on things with a social message that will touch people or is an ethical debate.” Sci-Fi series, Cozmo’s Coming up, she plays an Eastern European femme fatale in “Cozmo’s,” a sci-fi series that will run on streaming network Atomic TV this Spring. She said “ I had an amazing time working with this cast and crew for a second time, they really are gifted and hard working.” Alpha Omega Alpha Prior to training in acting, she earned a medical degree (MD) summa cum laude from the University at Buffalo. Janel was also elected as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society. instagram.com/janeltanna

he majority of people consider bathrooms to be one of the most important parts of the house. Offering a momentary space of solitude as well as a great place to unwind from the stresses of the day with a hot shower or relaxing bath, the bathroom is much more than just another room in the house; it is a safe space. TOTO too believes a high-quality bathroom is an experience and an everyday luxury people value and appreciate. Recently, TOTO, the recognized leader in innovation, technology, performance, and design, with products that enhance the

luxury bathroom experience, introduced new IoT-connected smart products for your safe space. The latest additions to the company’s inventory include the sublime Flotation Tub and a new sensor-operated auto-flush feature for toilet models. Many dreamed at least once about becoming an astronaut and being in outer space in a state of levitation while contemplating trillions of stars and planets. By offering you a weightless experience that eliminates the mechanical load on your joints,
TOTO’s Flotation Tub is a nostalgic ode to your childhood dreams of the space program. After 10 years of research on the relaxing effect of bathing, biomechanics, neuroscience, and ergonomics, TOTO discovered the unique body posture where reclining stabilizes the body’s posture as the hips, knees, and ankles are flexed, simulating zero gravity. This bathing posture deeply relaxes the mind and body. According to TOTO, cerebral blood flow studies showed reduced brain activity while using the tub. Now, bathers may immerse in a truly meditative moment of relaxation enhanced
by a special massage that produces a therapeutic flow of warm air bubbles enveloping the entire body. The height-adjustable Neck Spa provides a flow of warm water circulating around your neck and shoulders whilst massage jets mimic real hands massaging your lower back. The wonderful invention is under your command with all functions easily operated with the control panel on the inside of the tub. Ever wanted to have a hands-free experience with your toilet? For its popular line of WASHLET+ Toilets, TOTO Introduced the latest high-tech flushing technology. Aimes, Legato, Nexus, and Connelly toilets now feature TORNADO flushing technology, which maximizes cleaning and uses water more effectively. Extremely important for water conservation, WASHLET+ Aquia IV Dual
Flush models were upgraded to offer DYNAMAX TORNADO, enabling users to select the level of water used each time the toilet is flushed. Speaking of a clean and fresh bowl, the overwhelmingly smooth CEFIONTECT nanotechnology glaze prevents particulate matter from adhering to the bowl’s surfaces. TOTO’s PreMist function sprays CEFIONTECT glaze with tap water prior to use, reducing waste by 80% and keeping grime from sticking. After each flush, EWATER+ mists the bowl with electrolyzed water, keeping the bowl cleaner longer with fewer chemicals emitted into the environment. Every toilet needs a bidet seat to feel less lonely. Nearly 40 years ago, TOTO introduced WASHLET, a luxurious bidet seat that provides consumers with an effective and comfortable
personal cleansing. Since then, TOTO has been selling over 1 million WASHLETS each year worldwide. Building on its original concept, TOTO presented the newest invention. Featuring warm, aerated water for cleaning, along with a warm air dryer, heated seat, auto open and close, in-bowl catalytic deodorizer, and energyand water-saving functions, WASHLET S550e is TOTO’s new auto-flush bidet seat. Did you know the average person spends one and a half years of their life in the bathroom? We suggest you spend your time in comfort and luxury with TOTO, the winner of numerous awards and the provider of the ultimate bathing experience. totousa.com

LANDMARK 17 By W. A. Muller
O
n Stuyvesant Square in Gramercy lays the stunning 1800s Victorian Gothic building most commonly known as Landmark 17. The property underwent a complete renovation and repositioning which was done in order to transform unique gothic architecture back to its original splendor. Through rigorous architectural and landmark research, the original details of the facade and interiors were permanently restored. The buildings main attraction is Houston-based interior designer Lucinda Loya and her husband Javier’s pied-a-terre. The 4000 square foot, three bedroom, three bathroom apartment previously housed an Episcopal Chruch, the Salvation Army, and Smith College. The space was once also home to the Hazelton Rehabilitation Center where it earned the name “Clapton Hall” after famed musician Eric Clapton gifted money towards its renovation. When Loya discovered the former chapel turned residential property, she knew found the perfect
104 | resident.com
space for her family. For her, it was important to maintain the history of the building and the era in which it was created. She let the restored ceiling, in black and gilt glory, be her guide. After debating which route to take the interiors, Loya decided to go with white and gold to enhance the apartments existing beauty. After settling on the color scheme, Loya’s structural renovations were minor. She changed the oak cabinets in the open Poggenpohl kitchen to white and put in black and white checked bathroom floors. The renovation took seven months. Once inside, guests lounge on a three-seat sofa, chairs, and ottomans all by Marcel Wanders upholstered in white and gold damask. Sit in replica French canopy chairs which were whitewashed and added marigold-colored velvet. A beaded, brocaded gold-and-white bullfighting suit from Pamplona, Spain hangs on a stand and a gold-left chair in the shape of a cupped hand by Pedro Friedeberg adds a whimsical touch.
Once so committed to the white and gold colorscheme, Loya did not welcome anything red into the home. This all changed when she came across the Zhang Peng artwork of a red-clad girl tied up in a pink shag armchair. The piece now hangs over the desk. Loya also wanted to bring her love of fashion into the interiors. The master bedroom features a custom bed frame upholstered in Chanellike quilting with homages to Hermes, Gucci and Goyard found throughout. Dressers in the children’s room were made from plastic panels that once were part of Fendi’s window display. Near the entryway, Loya displays framed tear sheets design by Ruben Toledo for the Nordstrom catalogs. As a finishing touch, Loya painted the message “I Love U” on the back of the front door in gold. The Loya’s lived in the apartment full time whilst their Houston home underwent renovation. Now, they visit the pied-a-terre multiple times throughout the year.
