EDITOR’S NOTE It’s time to wave goodbye to winter and say hello to spring with the season’s most stylish florals, prints, animal patterns and pops of color, straight from New York Fashion Week’s runway! From our favorite skincare finds to spring break essentials, we’ll help you pack for your next posh getaway. With warmer weather on the horizon, head to Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa, where you can choose to relax or rock out with their recently renovated spa, gaming facilities and suites. Mardi Gras might be over, but New Orleans is always a good idea, especially when you stay at Windsor Court Hotel, a five-star spot near the French Quarter of town. If you’re staying in the city, make sure to stop by the iconic Pierre Hotel, which is currently celebrating its 90th anniversary with a special gallery featuring one-of-a-kind memorabilia plus new cabaret shows. From playing for the New York Giants to appearing on The Bachelor to becoming America’s most beloved television host on Daily Mail TV, Jesse Palmer is holding his best life in the palm of his hands! Jesse, who is saying sayonara to his bachelor days, is planning on marrying his Brazilian model fiancée this summer in France. He might be busy in his personal life, but Jesse’s professional gigs are still taking him around the country as he also hosts regularly for ESPN as well as The Food Network where he works with some of the biggest names in the business. After being drafted to play for the Giants, the always genuine Jesse moved around Manhattan before settling in Chelsea, and now considers himself a New York native – he is still on the hunt for the best pizza on and off the island! This month we also spoke with Olivier Arrindell, who is planning on taking the airline industry to new heights with his soon-to-be launched Ava Airways. This entrepreneur extraordinaire is planning on “taking crazy out of flying” by providing all passengers with personalized, fivestar service. Arrindell, who is originally from Sint Marten, has made the Dominican Republican his true home and is dedicated to ensuring his adopted country becomes a gateway to the rest of Latin America. He also hopes to encourage business development between the African diaspora, continental Africa and the Americas. March is Women’s History Month, and we couldn’t find a better example of someone who embodies all that it means to be a strong and passionate woman than the current Miss Universe, Zozibini Tunzi, who travels around the world empowering and inspiring all those she meets. Happy Spring! IG @allthefamenoneofthefortune

SOPHIE GUILLON Ruling the Valmont Beauty Brand By Julie Sagoskin
F
rom face cream products to perfumes, Valmont is one of the beauty industry’s most beloved brands, and CEO Sophie Guillon is the ruler of the fragrance and skincare stratosphere. Sophie started her career at Pierre Balmain Fragrances and took over the marketing and PR department at Yves Saint Laurent in Switzerland, in the 1990s. “I’ve been working in the luxury goods and cosmetics industries for 35 years and created all the Valmont skincare products in the past 20 years,” explained Sophie. “The biggest inspiration behind Valmont is the desire to respond to female ageing issues with original concepts and to provide them with visible results that meet their expectations,” said Sophie. Though she is definitely a boss babe, Sophie, feels like, well, Sophie! “I like to be myself because I love my job and it’s not a duty. I’m just being myself.”
Valmont, which is known for its limited edition Deto2x Cream, an oxygenating and detoxifying face cream, as well as moisturizing creams and anti-aging serums – they are, after all, made with traditional Swiss techniques in mind – has gained a cult-like following for its real results. Most recently, Valmont has introduced Palazzo Nobile and Collezione Privata, two new fragrance collections that make up the Storie Veneziane fragrance pillar of the Valmont Group. Sophie ensured that each scent, inspired by the varying beauty of women around the world, continues to carry on Valmont’s Venetian fragrance story – after all, these fresh new fragrances were inspired Venice. These new collections - which come in chic bottles - feature distinctive compositions, design and ingredients. With six eau de toilettes of ethereal delicacy, the Palazzo Nobile collection is inspired by the emotion of memories. These light and energizing shared fragrances are reminiscent of classic compositions. Meanwhile, Collezione Privata interprets femininity with strength and charm. Comprised of three
eau de parfums, these sensual fragrances feature spicy top notes complimenting a woman’s magnetic seduction. When it comes to standing out in today’s ever-changing and oversaturated beauty market, Sophie, the scent and skincare queen, said “we are different than other brands based on our effectiveness. I always want the highest concentration of active ingredients with balanced formulas! I don’t want to lie to my clients and I promise them the best in cosmetics. The most important part is penetrating a good formula into the skin so the customer sees the efficiency.” Want to try her favorite Valmont products? You’re going to want to go for the Renewing Pack, Time Master and Elixir des Glacier Cure Majestueuse – get ready to look and feel younger and more ravishingly radiant! “The new beauty industry is health conscious so I always try to keep Valmont products contemporary and modern so the current generation will use our brand. We are introducing a new line called “Primary” that will meet the needs of the new generations: strengthening the immune system of the skin in order to manage ageing.” Sophie, who works on the productions and everyday particulars, works with her husband who is in charge of Artistic Direction. Sophie might be a posh Parisienne, but she also loves New York, especially Hudson Yards and The High Line – when she’s not visiting The Spa Valmont for Plaza Athénée, of course! The spa offers exclusive signature treatments, including the Valmont Facial Featuring Oxylight, known as a “complete workout for your skin” using Oxylight’s non-invasive skincare therapies in one treatment. This Valmont facial features LED light, oxygen therapy, bisonix ultrasound, diamondabrasion and microcurrent. With Sophie at the helm, Valmont has become a favorite amongst beauty lovers of all generations – with guaranteed great skin, it’s not hard to see why! ZODICA PERFUME Smell Like Your Sign By Thomas Lau
A
good scent can uplift your mood and light up your style, and with Zodica Perfume, you can experience all that plus smell like your sign! After all, perfumes add a unique aura to your whole style, so you might as well show off your Sagittarius style! Zodica, which launched just a few years ago, already has many (great smelling!) fans. As suggested by its name, Zodica Perfumery is a zodiac-inspired fragrance brand, founded by beauty veteran Kristi Moe. All fragrances and products are named after the 12 Zodiac signs. Founder Kristi perfected each of the 12 scents over the years with the finest perfume ingredients across the globe. The result is a collection of high-quality artisanal perfumes that signify each sign’s essence and seasons.
20 | resident.com
Each perfume reflects the emotional aspect of a particular sign. Kristi, who has a deep interest and understanding of each zodiac sign, carefully handpicked ingredients to marry the scents with the unique traits of each sig. All unisex perfumes from Zodica are eau de perfume, with each bottle containing a high concentration of essential oil. You can pick your own Zodica perfume by sign, by season or by mood. Each perfume is even paired with a charm and magical poem specific to each sign. The poem is meant to be read before wearing the perfume in order to unleash the zodiac magic! These blissful bottles come in two sizes: full size of 50ml / 1.7oz for 900 sprays and travel “Twist & Spritz” size of 8ML / .27oz for 150 sprays. If you like scents from multiple signs, we recommend the limited “Discovery Set”, which comes with all
12 zodiac perfumes in travel size. Each travel “Twist & Spritz” bottle comes with a luxury black/pink and rose hard case which protects the glass perfume bottle. You just simply twist the bottle and spray the serenity! You can also get refills for the Twist & Spritz size, making Zodica truly sustainable. Aside from perfumes, Zodica Perfumery also makes hair perfume and body lotion so you can keep spreading on their heavenly and sustainable scents! All Zodica products are handcrafted in the USA with 100 % organic ingredients and are crueltyfree, meaning they are never tested on animals. SKIN&CO ROMA Italy’s Most Beloved Beauty Brand By Julie Sagoskin
G
abriel Balestra, President & Owner of SKIN&CO ROMA, an Italian brand specializing in toners, moisturizers and more which are made with natural ingredients, and of course, truffles, is in the business of making people look and feel good with this family business! “Being part of a family business is very different than anything else,” explained Gabriel. “You share passion and vision to a whole different level because it is personal. My family played such a big role in SKIN&CO ROMA and I am not sure I would have been able to grow our company to what it is today, without them.” Gabriel is very hands on with the brand which he has also become the face of – he’s appeared on numerous morning shows and is a favorite on QVC. According to Gabriel, the mission behind SKIN&CO ROMA was very simplistic and straight forward: “We wanted to share the Mediterranean remedies and recipes we have been using for generations with the rest of the world. I think our customer shared my passion for our ingredients, our story and definitely the quality of our products. It’s imperative we create products the way I envisioned them, which is being small batch, with ingredients that are constantly checked on and direct to consumer, from our farms. We just don’t purchase an extract from whomever gives us the lowest price. I go to each farm, I know personally the farmer that gets to grow the extract we use in each product and that makes a huge difference in what we are able to produce and the purity of our product. I take a lot of pride and I think being so authentic to our message has been the reason we built a following so quickly.” If you want to fall in love – with a beauty product, you’ll probably want to try Gabriel’s favorite, the Truffle Therapy Toner! “I have a spare bottle in both my home in Umbria and in New York in case I run out. Truffle Therapy Serum to me is the quintessential of smooth, radiant skin. It doesn’t matter if I just returned from a vacation or I just got off a 15 hours flight, as soon as I apply it, my skin is luminous and soothed. The last one I can’t be without lately is our Truffle Gommage. It is a light exfoliant with grounded Truffle and Apricot Kernel powder. It is delicate enough I can use it two to three times a week.” This popular brand is also very reliant on science when it comes to making skincare products. “We were studying the DNA of the Black Winter Truffle to create the first test Truffle Plantation at our Farms in Umbria (which we opened in September 2019 by planting the first 24,000 truffle trees) when with a team of chemists from Italy and the United Kingdom, working with our company, discovered a high content of an Antioxidant enzyme called SOD in the Black Winter Truffle skin. SOD is one of the most potent antioxidant enzymes and was generally sourced from animals in beauty. We are able to offer it from a botanical source at the same strength and that’s a breakthrough. We are working on many different projects that will launch this year. We have just finished perfecting the most amazing extract of Prickly Pear out of our farms in Sicily and we just launched our Shimmering Oil. It was such a success that it sold out in two weeks. But a fresh batch is being made as we speak. It’s direct from our farms and I think that’s the beauty of it.” skinandcoroma.com

AIDA BICAJ The Glow Guru By lauren bens
W
hen it comes to our skin, there is so much information out there about the best products, treatments, and regimens to follow to keep it healthy and looking its best. Aida Bicaj, a renowned skincare expert and celebrity facialist for over 20 years is known to her clients as their ‘secret weapon,’ as they entrust their faces and bodies to her skill and extraordinary hands. After leaving her, they report their skin is transformed – they look younger, rested, happier, and feel better. We sat down with Aida to learn more about her unique technique, as well as her insights and tips, on how to achieve healthy, glowing, youthful looking skin – from both her treatments and on your own. What makes your treatment unique from other skincare experts and facialists? AB: I use a ‘manual lift’ treatment – a massage technique I learned in France over 25 years ago from the founder of the French skincare line Biologique Recherche. Known as the Dr. Jacquet Movement, this tried and true method detoxes the dermal layers, stimulates blood circulation and works the outer layers of the skin to energize and rejuvenate the skin. I use a combination of natural products, my hands, and microcurrent to maintain skin elasticity, glow, and a youthful appearance. You compare taking care of your skin to working out and have been referred to as a ‘personal trainer for the face.’
24 | resident.com
Can you explain this a bit more? AB: I always say my treatments are workouts for the face. Like a personal trainer at the gym works the body’s muscles, I help rewire muscle cellular memory and strengthen facial muscles, resulting in a lasting, age-defying look and helping to avoid the need for aesthetics procedures for longer periods of time. How often should someone be getting a facial treatment? AB: It depends on the client’s skin condition, their age, and goals for their skin. In general, I recommend people have facial treatments every 4-6 weeks. Between treatments, or if someone doesn’t want to go in for a one-on-one treatment, what should people do on their own? AB: Beyond treatments, a proper and complete skincare regimen is of utmost importance and necessary to maintain healthy, glowing skin, and elasticity as well. To achieve healthy, glowing, dewy, flawless skin – which my clients refer to as ‘glassy skin’ – you should use a toner-exfoliator, mask regularly, apply a combination of serums appropriate for your skin type – and, of course, use day and night moisturizers. Gentle exfoliation is also a must to remove dead cells. It is not only useful, but important because exfoliation prepares the skin for the absorption of skincare products. Also, masking is just important as treating your skin with serums and creams.
Is there a common misconception you find people have about their skincare routine and products? Yes – that one product can solve all. There is no single skincare product on the market that will solve all issues or meet all skin goals, but if I had to choose, my top recommendations are Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 gentle rebalancing tonerexfoliator and Future Cosmetics Boutique Beauty Drops #3. They both achieve incredible results. And for unbalanced skin, I strongly recommend Future Cosmetics Cream Extreme No. 3. In addition, while the skin on your face is extremely important, often overlooked but just as important, is taking care of the skin on your body – and your body itself. Beauty comes from within, so if you take a holistic approach and eat a healthy, balanced diet and have proper nutrition, exercise regularly, stay hydrated, and avoid stress as much as possible, it will show on the outside – on your face and body! Is there anything else you’d like to share? Overall, whether your face, skin, or anything else, you need to make sure you take care of yourself. STACY IGEL
Fierce Founder of Fashion Brand BOY MEETS GIRL® By Lauren Bens
B
OY MEETS GIRL® (BMG) is a purposeful, edgy and young contemporary athleisure brand worn by celebrities such as Rosario Dawson, Mindy Kaling, Nina Dobrev, and Kendall Jenner. Created in 2001 by Fashion Designer and Creative Director, Stacy Igel’s love of music and the NYC art scene, the BOY MEETS GIRL® brand’s iconic boy and girl silhouette logo has become world famous. BOY MEETS GIRL® continuously connects music and art to fashion, with fashion show performances from artists such as Justine Skye, Wyclef Jean, Natasha Bedingfield, and more. The brand also believes in philanthropic efforts and has been giving back since inception after 9/11, with continuous limited edition collections that give back to organizations such as the Young Survival Coalition, BullyBust, Planned Parenthood, Human Rights Watch, and more. BOY MEETS GIRL® seeks to further the message that confidence and courage are trends that never go out of style. Their motto: We are about...
connections, collaborations, and our stories. We might rub shoulders with you on the subway or at a summer concert. We might dance with you in the rain. We might ask you for directions navigating our way through New York City and scribble your answers on a napkin. We might all have the same coffee place where the man at the counter knows the order without even uttering a word you’ve been coming to this coffee shop every morning for 2 years. We spoke with founder Stacy Igel about her fierce and fashion-forward label:
32 | resident.com
How would you describe your presentation and current collection? The presentation was everything I dreamt of and more. It was magical. Chloe Flower gave us her all, while hip hop dancers delivered an incredible performance to her music to open the show as well as a message everyone went home with. The models walked out to the beats of Chloe’s piano playing and brought the theme of the show all together. Below was the theme of the show that was seen in our virtual run of show. Do you continue to be inspired? IMAGINE being in a circle next to people from different backgrounds, who have different passions, and different world views. Then, imagine for that one moment you come together as a COMMUNITY, celebrating FREEDOM, and living with INTEGRITY. You feel me? If you do, then you have arrived. That MOMENT is RIGHT NOW, RIGHT HERE! We might not see eye to eye all the time, but we can come together and celebrate, and maybe even teach each other something new. I challenge you. Biggest trends in the fashion world? I foresee branded medical masks to protect us from all the viruses around us. And of course impactful streetwear! GO ROOTS x BOY MEETS GIRL® !
How did you prepare to re-enter the fashion sphere (NYFW)? Re-enter NYFW… I took a deep breath and got right to work. I created a vision and presented it to my team and the team at Roots who is my partner on my latest collaboration collection ROOTS x BOY MEETS GIRL®. Everyone was on the same page and trusted me to lead the way on the direction of the show. When I told everyone who knows me from my past NYFW shows that I was coming back to do a show they all came out to support and celebrate with us with excitement.
Also I have promoted sustainability since I started my brand. In fact, my first collection I sold to Bergdorf Goodman was made out of recycled vintage fabrics. I am happy to see after 19 years of trying to get others such as buyers from stores involved that we are slowly making changes. The youth is embracing what I have been working hard to change in the fashion biz with the use of social media which makes me very happy that we can use social media for good. Elements of the ROOTS x BOY MEETS GIRL® collection are made out of recycled yarns and organic fabric. Every action and step counts.
What is the most exciting part/s of Fashion Week? Everyone coming together to celebrate and be part of a moment I always hope they will never forget.
New projects coming up? I think the best part of upcoming projects is keeping you excited about it.
I also love all the street style and the genuine excitement of any Fashion Week from NYC to Paris to London and more.

THALÉ BLANC Spring’s It Bag By Thomas Lau
R
eady to refresh your wardrobe with a new accessory? With a Thalé Blanc bag, you’ve got this in the bag! With classic, well-made and chic styles, Thalé Blanc is a favorite amongst J. Lo and Gigi Hadid and other stars.
Born in Bombay, India, Deborah Sawaf, the founder of this fast-growing line of bags grew up with countless creative and inspirational elements, which has constantly influenced her design. Deborah eventually moved to Dubai to follow her passion for fashion, and wound up launching luxury brand Desage and Talia. She then moved to Los Angeles to study at Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and Gemological Institute of America. After designing for brands such as Gianfranco Ferre, Roberto Cavalli and Valentino, Deborah introduced, Thalé Blanc, fulfilling her dream of designing fashion-forward pieces. Thalé Blanc showcases Deborah’s ability to mix modern technology with her creativity, and each piece is inspired by her own experiences. Each Thalé Blanc collection consists of day bags, totes, clutches, and evening bags; all crafted from the most exotic materials with fine components ranging from Swarovski crystals to leather knot handles. Thalé Blanc inspirations came from a wide range of sources from the 1920’s, Renaissance, to the Baroque. Cheetah is the logo of Thalé Blanc, which symbolizes the graceful and strong nature of the founder; every collection has at least one product with the cheetah motif. Among the Thalé Blanc SS20 collection, the Audrey Bags stand out with its signature design. Deborah drew her inspiration from the film Sabrina (1954), played by the one and only Audrey Hepburn. The bags are meant to evoke the charm exuded by Audrey in the film – after all, Audrey’s character personified effortless and elegance – just like the woman this line of bags is intended for! The A-list Audrey bag exemplifies what Audrey stands for – an affirmation of a woman’s personal identity. The entire Audrey collection is built on timelessness and excellence – perfectly crafted bags, richly detailed linings, opulent ornaments and impeccable Italian craftsmanship. These it-bags also emphasize quality texture, function, color and simplicity. Audrey bags come in three sizes: Audrey classic, Audrey Mini and Audrey Micro. Audrey classic is the largest of the three in 12.5 x 10 x 4.5 inches, Audrey Mini is slightly smaller with 9.5 x 7.5 x 3 inches, and Audrey Micro is the smallest with 8 x 7 x 2.5 inches. All Audrey bags are made in Italy with fine leather calfskin and feature detailed pattern with chic colors such as red, gold and black. All Audrey bags come with detachable and adjustable leather shoulder strap which provides versatility, so to carry your Audrey in any way you can dream of! The SS20 collection also features other Thalé Blanc favorites such the Mademoiselle and Madame, Racer Backpack, Baguette Clutch, Gatsby totes and Crescent bag collections. Thalé Blanc SS20 also offers bag straps and belts in various patterns, so you can mix and match with all your bags all season long! Thaléblanc.com

JESSE PALMER Holding Life in the Palm of His Hands By julie sagoskin Photographed By Neil Tandy Produced By Julie Sagoskin Hair and Makeup by Angela Carroll Shot on location at Baccarat Hotel | 28 W 53rd St, New York, NY 10019
Ever since he was a young boy, Jesse Palmer had big plans to play in the NFL, and let’s just say he has gone from passing footballs to surpassing all of his other goals as well! Jesse was born in Toronto, Canada to a professional football player father who played in the CFL and a mom who was a model and also owned her own modeling agency. The persistent Palmer, who mostly grew up in Ottawa, was offered a scholarship to play at the University of Florida and was subsequently drafted in 2001 by the New York Giants.
career kicked off. I’ve been really lucky to have had different opportunities open up both in and outside of the sports world. I’ve tried different projects for different networks and I’m grateful for all of it.” While he might have been well-known amongst sports fans having played for the Florida Gators and then in the NFL, when Jesse was picked to appear on The Bachelor in 2004, he gained a whole new frenzied fanbase – women! “The show put me in front of a completely different audience and demographic. I was 24 years old at the time and thought it was this cool life experience. I did it in the off-season in Los Angeles. I was very naïve to the doors that it would open down the road. At the time I didn’t know what I would do after football. There was The Real World and only a couple other reality shows out there at the time. I really had no idea what I was stepping into but it ended up being a great experience and it would benefit me later on in life. All I can say is that it was wild and crazy! This really led to new opportunities, including with The Food Network and then Good Morning America, which introduced me to a totally new demographic all over again. My television career has really been evolving due to my being able to do a variety of different things.”
From playing football
“One of the best things that happened in my life was getting picked by the Giants. As a football player you have no control over who drafts you. I got lucky. I got drafted to New York City and it opened my eyes to a lot of possibilities. I was able to tap into a lot of my passions and things that I like and at 22 years old I was experiencing an entirely new world. I played for five seasons here in New York and had the chance to do a local internship with an NBC affiliate and was also doing radio during the offseason - this was my aha moment – I thought, I can do this tv thing when I’m done playing football. I went on to play a season in San Francisco in 2005 and Montreal in 2006 and then started working for ESPN and moved back to the city. That’s how my tv

While working for Good Morning America, Dr. Phil’s production company reached out and flew Jesse to LA. While out there, Jesse met with Carla Pennington, the executive producer of The Dr. Phil Show, who knew that he was just the guy to bring the best of DailyMail.com, the most read English newspaper website, to a tv platform. Jesse now delves daily into pop culture’s hottest topics as host of Daily Mail TV, which is in its third successful season. “Daily Mail TV allowed me to host my own show for the first time. I had hosted the Palmer and Pollack Show in 2011 on ESPNU but Daily Mail TV has been a great opportunity to quarterback my own show, as I like to say. We even won a daytime Emmy last year for outstanding daytime news program. It’s a great concept. We get to work hand in hand and there’s tremendous synergy there. It’s a global brand - it’s successful, it’s known and its tried and true premise of the format really works. We’re having a great time here doing the show. Most of the filming is done in studio but I do travel sometimes in the early season to do interviews. I once did an exclusive with Sarah Palin in Alaska. I also traveled to Louisville, Kentucky to interview Danielynn and Larry Birkhead.” “While he might be spending most of his time in New York for Daily Mail TV, Jesse does travel to film for The Food Network and ESPN. “I always host the Holiday Baking Championship, which I will start shooting in May, in either New Orleans or Los Angeles. I also filmed Bakeaway Camp with Marth Stewart in Bedford, New York, and all my stuff with ESPN is in Bristol, Connecticut. I also travel during college football bowl season and the college football playoffs. The NFL draft is in April in Las Vegas so it’s still a lot of moving and shaking!” 44 | resident.com

He might be Canadian, but New York City has Palmer in the palm of her hand! Jesse, who has lived everywhere from Hoboken to Harlem to the Upper West Side, has now called Chelsea home for the past eight years. One of Palmer’s favorite things to do is discovering new places – and pizza joints - in and around New York! “Prince Street Pizza has great takeaway square pizza, there is always a line. I’ve been told I need to venture off the island and to Brooklyn to find more. Carbone is one of my favorite restaurants for Italian. They’re always opening new spots. I have a list of places I want to check out, and this includes all different types of food and cuisines.”
Palmer said he is happy to live anywhere, Emely, a Brazilian model, is determined to remain in Chelsea. “She has a defined area on a map of Manhattan’s borders and she’s not allowed to leave Chelsea. I must say it does have everything you need. We’re going to have a small wedding with family and friends, and we’ve got these great wedding planners from the region. I proposed to Emely in Champagne, France this past summer and we started touring around Europe looking at venues a few weeks later. We were able to get our list together before football season and then we booked the venue and got the ball rolling during football season. It’s been a lot less painful than I had originally anticipated!”
With a successful athletic and now television career, what’s next for Jesse? Wedding planning! That’s right, this former Bachelor star is no longer a bachelor! Jesse and his fiancé, Emely, who he met at Rumble Boxing in Chelsea, are currently planning a summer destination wedding in the South of France. While
When he’s not working or wedding planning, this former football player and his fiancée enjoy traveling. Their favorite city is Paris, which they make sure to visit at least once a year. The couple also travel yearly to Brazil to visit with Emely’s family and always attempt to explore another country in South America
while they’re in the region. Mostly recently, they fell in love with Uruguay. “We discovered this gem last year. The food was absolutely fantastic. We stayed in a tiny town called Garzon. It’s not a secret to South Americans, but it’s lesser known to North Americans. We recently went to Mexico City and Cabo which is becoming an amazing foodie destination as advertised. We’re both pretty spontaneous. We pack our stuff and jet off for ten days. It’s great looking for new places and new adventures.” The Palmer’s also make plans to get together during the year. Jesse makes time to visit his brother in Orlando – where he also has a home – as well as parents and younger brother in Los Angeles. From playing football to realizing his television passions, Jesse never drops the ball, in whatever professional endeavor he pursues.

champagne for the people: Have you always been in the spirits industry? if not, tell us a bit about your background. My professional career began in finance, but I have always had a passion for luxury spirits, which is what lead me to create DeLeon Tequila as my first spirits venture in 2009. What made you decide to enter the spirits industry? I’ve long been a spirits connoisseur myself, and was always excited by the idea of creating luxury spirits where I saw holes in the market. In an industry where there are always so many new spirit brands being created, what keeps your work ahead of the mark and constantly evolving? I try not to compare my spirits to others on the market, and solely focus on exquisite
this exquisite Cuvée and enjoys the versatility it provides to experiment with different pairings and cuisines. Aside from the spirits industry, are you involved in any other ventures? The spirits industry is my passion and where I enjoy spending my time. As someone constantly evolving in your industry, describe your ideal perfect peaceful moment. The ideal peaceful moment would be a great meal paired with Mod Sélection or Original DeLeon Tequila. One significant lesson you have learned from working in the spirits industry. I’ve learned that there is always an opportunity to modernize. Champagne is a product that has been dominated by tradition, but with Mod Sélection, I was able to honor that heritage while still creating a product that shines and stands out for the modern beauty and elegance that is inside. I view every bottle of our Champagne as a modern work of art. modselectionchampagne.com
craftsmanship. For example, when I created DeLeon, I forever changed the landscape of barrel aging in tequila by experimenting and finally utilizing French Sauternes Barrels instead of caramel coloring or flavoring. By selecting only the purest first quality agave, DeLeon became a revolutionary tequila at the time when competitors were pushing quantity over quality. For Mod Sélection, luxury artisan techniques and attention to detail at every stage of the production process are what set this champagne apart. Once your formulas and ingredients have been established for a spirit, are you also always experimenting with and testing that formula, or does it cease once created? For new varietals and offerings, we are always experimenting with new blends, grapes, and aging. Mod Sélection is a modern interpretation of the tradition, heritage, and elegance that is Champagne, so we never fully rely on what has worked in the past but continue to modernize and experiment. Why the decision to develop a new brand of luxury champagne? I had always wanted to create luxury champagne,
even before launching Virginia Black. But given the nature of the wine and the precision I wanted to take in creating the superior drinking cuvée, I took my time to find the right house to partner with and perfect the liquid. I believe it was worth the wait. What do you feel marks Mod Sélection as a distinguished bottle of champagne compared to other luxury champagne brands? The attention to detail and selection in every aspect of our production process is what sets Mod Sélection apart from every other champagne on the market. Why the name Mod Sélection? It was a name I chose that has ties to the family I partnered with and my rigorous Selection process that comes with everything I do. Describe the ideal Mod Sélection Champagne drinker? Who is that person? Mod Sélection Champagne is not only a celebratory drink but something you can also drink throughout a meal paired with a wide variety of dishes. It is designed to be enjoyed like a fine wine. The ideal Mod Sélection drinker appreciates the inherent balance of

ARRINDELL El Rey de Santo Domingo The King of Santo Domingo By christopher a. pape Photographed By Jochy Fersobe The Dominican Republic, at least the parts that few foreigners get to experience, is a tale of two countries - one with orange Lamborghinis and $500 dinners for two, and the other of deep poverty, especially for those living outside of the capital with few opportunities for social and economic growth. A place where the average salary is only $300 a month and many live off subsistence farming and other manual trades.

Mr. Olivier Arrindell
,a self-proclaimed “new” Dominican who was born in Sint Marten to a Caribbean mother and Dutch Caribbean father has made it his mission to bring economic prosperity to underserved areas of the DR with his about-to-be launched airline, AVA Airways. AVA seeks to disrupt the industry with its premium offerings like in-flight food and free alcoholic beverages without charging more for those services. Known colloquially as the “King of Santo Domingo,” Olivier races around from meeting to meeting stirring excitement and passion in his investors and government officials for the vision of the Dominican Republic as a flight hub and gateway to the rest of Latin America, with the additional hope of bringing business development between the African diaspora, continental Africa and the Americas. And these goals aren’t just the whims or dreams of grandeur, but through grit, self-resilience and a knack to get to the heart of the matter Mr. Arrindell has secured financial backing from a who’s who of sports figures, musical superstars, institutional investors and has inked a deal with one of the top airplane leasing company to secure a variety of great aircraft options (for example, the Airbus 320), with plans for the inaugural flight in the last quarter of 2020. These facts only tell half the story of a man who is open, generous, steeped in historical facts and driven to prove that those from historically oppressed nations can make a mark without seeking a handout or playing a sport.

AVA Airways – What Makes Them Different AVA Airways is a project conceived from a need that has gone unfulfilled for decades. Travel was once an enjoyable experience that passengers looked forward to but has evolved into nonstop stress that begins long before you get to the airport. In today’s travel industry, passengers are treated like cattle, but AVA Airways has a new approach that seeks to revolutionize the industry. Ava Airway’s goal is to create a cohesive concept that streamlines the travel process from inception to completion and beyond. To do this, they organized all of their design innovations around three core principles: “Taking Crazy out of Flying,” by making Ava Airways actually worthy of passenger affection; “Know the Journey,” by designing touch points that are tailored to the unique moments comprising a passenger’s journey with Ava Airways and “Membership Matters,” by creating an airline model that goes beyond fare-based transactions. AVA Airways gives the traveler the possibility of flying without many common restrictions prevalent in the current travel climate. Based on Arrindell’s vision, AVA Airways has designed solutions based on five pillars that define the AVA Airways concept: Predictable pricing, human contact, passenger transfer, simple boarding and consistent baggage policy. Olivier’s idea of predictable pricing is predicated on the idea that there should be no differentiations that may threaten the quality of care for all passengers, in other words, no basic economy verses standard fares. The second of these pillars, human contact, is one of the most important differentiations of AVA from other airlines. This is because AVA has personnel trained to, above all, listen to the client and be agile in order to provide the best customer service possible. Of the five pillars, the third is the most unique: Passenger transfer. This allows a booked guest the possibility to transfer his/her ticket to a third party and/or alter the flight date without surcharges. The fourth and fifth pillars have to do with the logistics of travel, simple boarding and consistent baggage policy. The fifth being truly revolutionizing, by providing a definition of a single standard of weight, consistent with the user’s needs, that does not become a stress situation for the traveler or the company. Another advancement of AVA is that it is centered around technology. In the age of autonomous cars, the experience starts with your trip to the airport. Waiting for airport security disappears with in-transit screening, allowing you to head right to your gate. Additional improvements like minimizing “gate lurking” before boarding the flight are achieved by apps feeding real-time information to travelers. Face-to-Face with the Legend Having decided to feature Mr. Arrindell on our cover, I was prepared, like we do in almost all other cases, to interview him on the phone; Olivier lives in the Dominican Republic full-time and had no plans to visit New York nor did I have plans to come to the Dominican Republic. However, after a brief call he insisted that I fly down to Santo Domingo to meet him, his team and see how the “King” really lives.
Upon arrival into Santo Domingo, I was whisked into the VIP lounge where they privately and efficiently processed my entry into the country. Waiting for me with his cadre of staff was the man himself, Olivier Arrindell, a tall (and large) man who, with open arms and a smiling face, welcomed me into his kingdom. From there we were off, in his brand-new Range Rover, to lunch where we discussed politics, the state of the Dominican economy and (briefly) his plans for AVA; I was impressed by his candor, willingness to share and vision for the country and his airline. After lunch, it was off to meet young (and very talented) music producers to discuss how he could help them advance the career of a young and promising Dominican singer and to see his well-appointed office on the 23rd floor of the most luxurious building in the city. Dinner was had at one of the best restaurants in town along with his lovely partner and the photographer who shot the photos you see in his troy; it was a lovely evening full of discussion on the opportunities and challenges facing the country. The next day we were off to Alta Vista, one of the swankiest restaurants in all of the country. Here, perched upon a mountain top, with views for miles, we had a fabulous lunch and I learned that the chef and owner of the restaurant would be the food service provider for the airline; hearing that lobster, fish, a truly amazing fried rice and other high-end offerings would be complimentary on AVA sounded almost too good to be true, but after hearing Mr. Arrindell’s raison d’etre and his explanation of costs, it made perfect sense; Olivier wants to bring humanity back to airlines, especially those from countries who may have never tasted, even a bit, of luxury in flying. Mention should be made that Mr. Arrindell has expansion plans for the company, ones I can’t divulge, so as not to give any inside corporate information to competitors but suffice it to say that with his strategy in place the sky is the limit for AVA. A Word of Caution Leaving me on my own to make it back to the airport for travel back to New York, Olivier had a devious plan in mind; he wanted me to experience what a normal traveler would go through at the Santo Domingo airport. And all I can say is that in my 45 countries traveled to, sometimes visiting a country on multiple occasions (like Italy, France, Japan, South Africa, etc.) the airport in Santo Domingo had to be one of the top 3 worst airports I have ever been to. From the long check-in line (thankfully I was devious enough to get around it) to inefficient immigration system, the airport is a hinderance to any future plans to grow the country economically and as a tourist destination. Thankfully, Olivier, through AVA Airways, plans to lobby and advocate for change, while giving AVA’s passengers options for a speedier and more efficient travel experience. avaairways.com

YELLOWSTONE A Wondrous WINTER EXPERIENCE By Neil Tandy

Snow covered female bison on the road between Mammoth Hot Springs and Old Faithful, Western Yellowstone.
T
he mere mention of Yellowstone conjures up images of geysers, most notably, Old Faithful and plentiful wildlife, usually, bears, wolves and bison, all of which, this jewel of a National Park has in varying degrees of abundance. The vast majority of visitors visit May through October, with July alone averaging over 900,000 visitors, so as someone who doesn’t enjoy being around that many people, the chance to visit in January, with an average of around 20,000 visitors, was perfect. The Yellowstone experience began at Bozeman Airport in Montana, with the smell of log fires pervading the arrivals hall, offering a true welcome. A very comfortable, exceedingly scenic 80-mile bus trip to the North Entrance at Roosevelt Arch, with an informative guide pointing out wildlife along the way – especially black tailed deer, bald eagles and even elk, which had moved to the lower regions outside the park to feed was a true indication of an incredible five days to follow. The first night inside the park was spent at Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel. The rooms provided a wonderfully warm and cozy place to sleep after a long day of travel. The next morning, after a hearty breakfast and a walk around the travertine terraces, it was time to get on the road for the 4-hour journey to Old Faithful Snow Lodge, in one of the park’s many snow coaches – think 13 seater mini-coaches with big wheels and snow tires, and an experienced and informative guide, too.

The trip takes around four hours, with scheduled stops at Gibbon Falls, Madison Warming Hut and Midway Geyser Basin, plus additional stops, which make for some perfect photo ops of wildlife, when safe to do so, of course! That four hours flies by, as the various sights along the way are sure to take your breath away. A few of the spots we were able to see included Sheepeater Cliff, named after a band of Eastern Shoshone called Tukuaduka (sheep eaters), Obsidian Cliff, Roaring Mountain (although eerily silent these days), Norris Geyser Basin; named after Philetus W. Norris, the second superintendent of Yellowstone, Beryl Spring and Fountain Flats. Old Faithful Snow Lodge is the destination and it really is a wonderful place to stay. Built from wood that was harvested entirely from park trees, it feels like being in a log cabin, protected from the snow and cold, but with a dining room serving all manner of wonderful, wholesome food and a well-stocked bar, carrying many local and international liquors and beers. The highlight of the trip was undoubtedly the 8-hour long winter photo safari in a snow coach with 16-year veteran guide, Lisa Culpepper, driving. An accomplished and renowned photographer herself, Lisa helped lesser experienced photographers with settings for winter images by stopping at scheduled points as well as when wildlife was spotted and advising everyone on the best way to capture their picturesque photos. We were even lucky enough to see a coyote feeding on a carcass of a recently deceased bison, about 200 yards away from us, before it was chased away by a bigger male . The coyote the ran back to the road, to within 30 yards of us, affording everyone ample opportunity for great photos of it in a snowstorm, before trotting off along the trail. A trip to West Thumb, Yellowstone Lake the next day, a walk to watch Old Faithful erupt and hiking along a couple of trails around Old Faithful took up the rest of the time in that area before returning to Mammoth, going along Firehole Canyon Drive with a stop at Firehole Falls. We then went on to Artist’s Paintpots, an area of hot springs, geysers, fumeroles and mudpots. While it was cold, with average daytime temperatures lingering around 20 degrees, layering up with a snow suit, thermal socks, gloves and good snow boots was more than enough, although at times, the wind hitting the face, reminded one of just how brutal the weather can get here. If you want to visit a national park but want to stay away from the crowds and traffic, go to Yellowstone in winter. It is definitely worth every wonderous minute! neiltandy.com

SEMINOLE HARD ROCK HOTEL & CASINO TAMPA Rock Out Your Way By Julie Sagoskin
Y
ou might think of a Florida getaway as soaking up the sun, but my last trip to the Sunshine State consisted of not even caring if the sun was out or not – that’s because at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa, I spent my days eating, shopping, relaxing at the spa, and repeating it all the following day! Don’t worry, I still came home with a small tan from the pool and private cabana, complete with a flat screen television, cozy couch and mini fridge stocked with fruit. With poolside service and Pool Bar, you can enjoy your posh surroundings all stay long. While all Hard Rock properties pride themselves on their one-of-a-kind music memorabilia, the 24K gold leaf piano in the lobby, which once belonged to Elvis Presley, makes this particular Hard Rock particularly special. This lavish casino, which is owned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida, recently underwent a $700 million renovations can be felt throughout the property, including 500 new rooms, lavish pools, an upgraded Poker Room – it’s so posh you won’t be able to keep your poker face – and a new Rock Spa, which

After a night out – or inside the casino – wake up the next morning on your Hard Rock “Sleep Like a Rock” bedding and enjoy some breakfast in bed before heading to the rejuvenating Rock Spa, where you can indulge in treatments ranging from massage therapies to facials to body treatments and more. Let’s just say that after a relaxing Swedish massage, which was followed up with a taste of sorbet and glass of champagne, I had found my own taste of heaven in Tampa! Stay all day if you want – guests have access to the spa’s jacuzzi, steam room, sault sauna, coed aqua lounge and outdoor pools. They even offer yoga and personal training so you can get rock hard abs after eating at the recently opened Sugar Factory, known for its larger-than-life
milkshakes, or the adults-only alcohol-infused ice-cream store! In between spa treatments, slots and shopping, I dined at their signature restaurant, Council Oak Steaks & Seafood, where their head butcher takes serious pride in their 100% U.S.D.A. prime steaks. The seafood towers, octopus appetizer, fish options and wine selection make this a must try. The lounge area which features live music from local talent makes this a great place to stop for before or after dinner drinks. Other dining options include Cipresso, which serves up seasonal Italian fare – their meatballs will blow your mind – as well as The Rez Grill offering upscale American comfort food, the always fun Hard Rock Café, Fresh Harvest Buffet, Jubao Palace Noodle Bar, Constant Grind, Rock ‘N Raw and a food court. Lounging out in a private cabana by the pool – they have three pools altogether – and enjoying snacks from Pool Bar & Grill which serves a full menu for lunch and dinner plus frozen cocktails, was not a bad way to spend the day at this always happening Hard Rock!

BROADWAY ROULETTE A Revolutionary Game-Changer By Lauren Bens
If you want to see one – or all - of today’s biggest Broadway shows, spin the wheel with Broadway Roulette, a revolutionary way to get affordable and A-list worthy seats to every show currently playing on Broadway. Let’s just say this interactive experience is almost as fun as the show you’ll be seeing!
Hamilton or The Lion King, but they didn’t want to see anything so badly that they were willing to spend the kind of money that those shows typically cost. I then started getting tickets to put in their Airbnb packages. For example, I would put in Phantom tickets with the welcome package.
Elizabeth Durand Streisand first had the big idea for Broadway Roulette when she was still a celebrity journalist and dating her now-husband. “I said, we have to get married or break up, and he said we had to live together first. We moved into a new apartment together because I didn’t want to live in his bachelor pad, but he wound up keeping it to rent it out on Airbnb. As a celebrity journalist, I was available during the day to meet the Airbnb guests and help them settle in.The people staying there would ask for recommendations and everyone wanted to see a Broadway show. “They had heard of like four shows and the shows always included
It didn’t take long for Elizabeth’s wheels to start turning, and now you too can spin the roulette wheel and find yourself at one of Broadway’s biggest hits or even a lesser known gem!

“I built this on a WordPress site in 2016 which was operated by only myself until 2017. This was really the birth of the business. We closed our first round of funding and hired one person when I quit my job. I had been working for US Weekly, People, Intouch, the New York Post, The Daily News, Good Housekeeping and other Hearst publications. I loved it. I had been doing it for ten years and knew
the players, but this just snowballed and wasn’t going to live if I didn’t do it full-time.” Broadway Roulette is still spinning and introducing a new demographic to dramas and musicals. “Once it got up and running, our customer base was not just heavily tourists anymore. We serve a lot of locals, the vast majority of whom are under the age of 45. These are young millennials who live within 30 miles of New York City. It’s a group that doesn’t go to Broadway that much, but we’ve made it fun and easy, otherwise, they’re not seeing Broadway shows. It was unexpected but now we’re bringing people into Broadway who would normally just go get a drink after work – these are our repeat buyers.” This game of roulette is built on a partnership between Broadway Roulette and the shows. “Our platform is different than anything else out there because we include every single show on Broadway,
confirmation. The morning of the show, you will get a text and email informing you when the wheel is spinning and within half an hour you will know what show you’ll be seeing, along with timing and location. For most shows, tickets are picked up directly at the box office. “For anybody buying Broadway tickets the traditional way, it’s time consuming and stressful. Here you can play the odds and get the feeling that you won even though you’ve obviously still paid. The psychology is different than just getting an email from Groupon.” Whether you are a tourist booking in advance or a local who is more likely to spin the wheel within a week of your preferred show date, the pricing is always perfect for any budget. That’s because Broadway Roulette has tiers of pricing, ranging from family pricing for kid-friendly shows as well as premium pricing which guarantees orchestra seats. There is always a flat fee, and ten ticket limit. According to Elizabeth, 35 percent of orders are from repeat customers, many of whom use the Roulette to see every show on Broadway for a flat price. “They are excited to use our site rather than making individual purchases on their own. When I conceived of this I thought it would be about people getting a good deal in exchange for not being able to choose their show, but it turns out people don’t want to choose their show. The group we’re capturing is overwhelmed by the number of choices. They don’t want to read reviews or be responsible for picking a show their friend or boyfriend didn’t like. They are getting a good deal and won’t need to worry about it. We really help
you find things that you are going to love that might not have been on your radar. People are not talking about some of the other shows that didn’t have a big enough marketing budget or didn’t win a Tony Award. We are there trying to break through the clutter out there. Out of 35 shows, there are really only a handful at any given time that people know of. If a show is not based on a movie or come to Broadway with some other built-in fanbase, it’s hard for a show to survive. When you look across the board at the Broadway industry as a whole, it looks amazing, but there are a small number of shows that are going gangbusters and then a ton of amazing productions struggling to find their footing. The shows like Hamilton bolster the numbers, but nearly 80 percent of shows never make their money back. What we’ve built is a new way for people to discover more shows.” Elizabeth and her team want to ensure that everyone has a positive roulette experience. They even encourage you to rate your show, thus improving your roulette. “We take into account the customer feedback and ultimately can find correlations between groups of people who will like a specific show. We try to use the data versus our own personal biases or assumptions by getting real information back about who likes a show and who doesn’t.” Aside from helping both locals and tourists from around the world get top Broadway seats, Elizabeth is busy with her husband – the one whose bachelor pad launched the whole idea – and two kids plus a dog. broadwayroulette.com
some through direct relationships and some by purchasing on the open market. We’ve built a black box that allows us to fill seats to shows without risking any brand damage. In that way, we work with the industry, not against it. Broadway shows are a luxury item, so theatres are hesitant to offer public discounts. With our service, there is no discount messaging – our customers simply know every show is included in roulette. Perhaps surprisingly, the number-one factor in determining the type of relationship we have specific shows is not how “popular” a show is, but how motivated the team is to not have empty seats. How does it work? You sign up, put in your preference of when you want to go see a show – this can be done up to four months in advance or until midnight the day before – and eliminate a number of shows you’ve already seen or don’t want to see. You will pay at time of purchase and receive an email

Especially patience for myself which is something I’ve never had before. What are your future goals? My future goal is to do work and things that feed my heart and soul. Work that makes me feel alive. I hope to continue doing my part in contributing towards positive change and impact in the world. How proud are you to represent South Africa? profile grandmother was raised by a Nanny and a maid , she also had a chauffeur but tragically her mother and father were never there for her. It was the greatest pain of her life. Princess Christiana There are similarities to Megan’s grandmother and the Princess in the story, “I wrote about a Princess who has everything but parents. The Princess Christiana (which is also the name of Megan’s grandmother) lives in a golden tower and every night she looks out from her balcony and sees a family in the distance.” She goes on to say, “Every night, the Princess watches the other family, looks out to the moon and wishes to be the little girl in the family for one day.” Ironically, the country girl in the other family wishes upon the moon as well; wishing to be a ” Princess “ if only for one day. “ One night, the moon arranges for them to meet and they become friends.
MEGAN MARIE FERRARO Changing the World with Words By Carlos Lacayo The Lonely Princess “From my earliest memory, there was never any other option in my mind aside from being a writer,” confided Megan Marie Ferraro, the author of The Lonely Princess. “There was never anything else that I wanted to do with my life; it just felt right.” Megan has been writing stories ever since she was in the first grade; she went on to start her high school newspaper called The Bulldog Bark with her Journalism class. Then she only applied to colleges with writing programs, and eventually Ferraro chose Indiana University. “I used to live in the library.

I can remember spending hours there just smelling all the books and just absorbing the energy there.” Megan’s Story Her latest work, The Lonely Princess, is a children’s book about the power of friendship, generosity, and respect for the differences between people. The inspiration came from someone close to Megan; her grandmother who was a wealthy aristocrat from Spain. Her mother (Ferraro’s great grandmother) died when she was very young and her father was in the military so he was always away. Ferraro’s
Illustrations by Domingo Zapata The artwork for The Lonely Princess was done by world-renowned artist Domingo Zapata, who is a family friend of Megan’s. “I’ve known Domingo for ten years; he is a really good friend of my family . My parents have a house full of his paintings; there is a huge collection of Domingo’s,” said Ferraro. The love of his art ended up spilling over to Megan ; “When my husband and I got a new home we commissioned Domingo to do the whole place. We have two murals by the pool, one on the terrace outside our bedroom of the Mona Lisa with a New York City motif and more throughout our home,” she concludes by saying, “He has so much compassion for people and he’s such a heartfelt person. He loves children and does so much for them, also, he’s a creative genius! He was the perfect person to do this book with me.” Words to Live By Ferraro has multiple children’s books on the horizon, all with positive messages, not only for her threeyear-old son Mateo, but to children around the world. “For all my books I want to put children on the same level. Valuing each other on a material level shouldn’t even be a concept to them. Growing up, I was overburdened with that and with the access to information we have now, it’s so much easier to hurt people with words.” She goes on to say, “I never want my son to feel like he’s better than another child because of what he has. If we instill these values in our children early, the limits are boundless for them regardless of what they choose to do.” lightswitchlearning.com
DOMINGO ZAPATA The American Dream By Carlos Lacayo Majorcan-born Visionary Art and expression have been coursing through the veins of Spanish-American artist, Domingo Zapata, for as long as he can remember. “I don’t remember a day of my life when I wasn’t drawing, painting, sketching or playing around with art. I think I was born obsessed with creation,” Zapata states. The Majorcan-born visionary says his homeland inspired him, but when he moved to New York, the inspiration began coming from unexpected sources, “I discovered pop culture in the New York of the 90s and early 2000s and it was a lot of graffiti. So, that’s where you see a lot of influence in my work; from the classics to pop. I learned about Basquiat, Warhol, Julian Schnabel and that generation of artists that were different from what I was used to and I experienced it as it was happening.” The Lonely Princess The Lonely Princess is Domingo’s new book project with author Megan Marie Ferraro. Zapata says the
book is important to him because of the positive message it sends to children. He spoke about the impact art can have on a child’s life, “ I have two kids and like most fathers, my kids are my life. I love children and I think that art is so important for children’s imagination. It’s very sad that the art programs are the first thing to go in a lot of public schools; whether it’s drawing, music, dance or theater.” Art & Children Author Megan Marie Ferraro was as excited to work with Zapata as he was to work with her, “When I first heard that Megan wanted me to do this book, I was thrilled. I was very happy to help with something that would be for not only my kids, but every other kid in the world.” He goes on to say, “It mixes a good story with great art and I think any opportunity to expose a kid to any kind of art or introduce a kid to art is a success and it’s very important to me.”
Lightswitch Learning When asked about his future as an illustrator he said, “I have a publishing deal with publisher Adam Reingold at Lightswitch Learning for more books. Megan is an amazing writer and I feel very comfortable illustrating what she writes. We’re already working on a couple of things; we’re working on a book about transgender children and another about teaching art to children. We’re coming back; this is not the last one.” What’s Next for Domingo Domingo plans on returning to his studio this year; stating, “2019 was a year that I did a lot of mural work, I did the Times Square project and painted with Pope Francis. In 2020 I’m going back to the studio. I want to do more traditional artwork. I abandoned that for a little bit but now I want to go back. Plus, I owe a lot of people a lot of paintings.” dzapata.com

to help people explore comics , especially Archie and his pals in Riverdale. Nancy Silberkleit is the Co-CEO of Archie Comics, where the company now has three TV shows on CW and Netflix. Nancy Silberkleit took over the reins of this iconic comic giant after her husband passed away. Silberkleit, a long-time elementary school art teacher, draws from her gravitas to speak on how the pages of a
comic book and their characters can be the platform to spark conversation and promote acceptance of neurodiversity -- including Autism. Nancy harnesses the power of comics as a change agent for literacy, diversity, inclusion, and anti-bullying. Silberkleit’s projects carry an underlying focus that Comic Books + Children = Reading. Silberkleit says
the key to learning is “engagement”. The task sits high on Silberkleit’s shoulders as she encourages teachers from around the world to utilize the comic book platform as a powerful tool in understanding how to reach people . Nancy has met challenges in the industry, but she says it was her time in the classroom that did not let her become a damsel in distress. Nancy is the first female executive to ever walk through Archie Comics door in its 80-year history. As one can imagine, some sharks pressured her to sell the 51% share of stock she oversees. Nancy didn’t budge. She saw an opportunity to fuse her teaching background with the world of comic books and never looked back. After all, the kind of wealth teachers seek is the wealth of the development of a child’s mind and personal values. Silberkleit treasures her time in the classroom and equates that experience to providing her with an MBA equivalent. For 25 years, she delivered information to individual minds in a way they could grasp. Silberkleit sees the world of the business through the same lens. It’s the CEO’s job to connect the brand to the people! Silberkleit is natural at it. The patience she learned in the classroom setting over those 25 years became a vital asset as she stepped into the role of Co-CEO.She realized quickly what the business world can present. That patience helped Nancy coin her phrase, “Never let anyone try to define who they want you to be! Block out the negatives and move on!”
Silberkleit enjoys reminiscing her 2010 feature in Fortune Magazine. That was the time that marked Silberkleit holding on to “Betty Cooper” for dear life. But as time went on, Silberkleit learned “Never question if you can. Only question why would you ever think you cannot!” Silberkleit came into Archie as a widow and without any significant support. She came in long before the #MeToo and Fake News era. She sometimes wonders if those platforms would have eased her transition. However, her gift to all of the women today encourages women to define themselves. “Speak out. Stand up for who you are. Hold your desires dreams tight and close to your heart when the challenges come.” Nancy wishes women the world over a Happy Women’s History Month. “Your courage matters!” nancysilberkleit.com

LUISA DIAZ Sexy Is Timeless By W. A. Muller
L
uisa Diaz is the author of Sexy Is Timeless: Ten Timeless Sexy Assets That Lie Within You. In this new empowering guide, Luisa redefines what it is to be “sexy” in this new era of women’s empowerment. Diaz outlines ten characteristics of sexiness that can make women feel validated and more assertive. She claims the new “sexy” is a woman who is educated (knowledge) and unapologetically confident in what she wants. Yet, she remains feminine because she knows femininity is not a weakness but a strength and she practices kindness through giving back to her community. Interestingly, none of these aspects refer to body type or images of traditional beauty. Instead, Diaz explains that the word “sexy” is a quality that is appealing or interesting. Luisa helps bring enlightenment to the reader’s own unique attributes and self-worth.
Currently, Luisa is living with her husband in New York and is the reigning Mrs. New York International. She is also in the process of finishing her second book “Sexy is “Timeless in relationships” on how to apply the ten timeless sexy assets that lie within you to your relationship without losing who you are. This will be a great support to everyone who is in or is seeking a relationship. She discusses the importance of consistently working on one’s relationship, saying, “There is no happily ever after without happily ever working.” Luisa is the former Ms Venezuela International, she came to the United States without knowledge of the English language, yet she did not let this stop her from attending college and graduating with a B.S. in business administration with a concentration in marketing. Shortly after graduating, Luisa created, produced and hosted the longest running Spanish Language talk show on an English language network affiliate called Luisa Su Voz Latina. The show focused on issues and information relevant to the Hispanic community. She later moved to Hollywood to explore the world of entertainment. Luisa produced and hosted an English language entertainment talk show called “Luisa” which incorporated a live band and studio audience. Mrs. Diaz is also an actress and has been featured in Oscar-winning movies including “The Fighter” and “Silver Linings Playbook.” While in Los Angeles, Luisa founded Mi Amor Gala in honor of her beloved grandmother who was a survivor of domestic violence. Mi Amor Gala is a celebration of kindness: angels that empower other angels with broken wings through the gift of love. These glamorous events benefit a number of charities that empower women and bring hope to survivors. She works with domestic violence survivors and showcases their transition into an empowered “Runway of Hope” at the Mi Amor Gala. She believes in opportunities and new beginnings.

MATT NEWTON
New York’s Famed Author and Acting Coach By Lauren Bens | Photographed by Liana Hayles Newton
M
eet Matt Newton - an actor, acting coach, author, Backstage contributor, film director, as well as the founder of the acclaimed MN Acting Studio in New York City and Connecticut. Matt’s coaching clients include Tony winners, Emmy award winners, Gold Globe nominees, comedians, late night hosts, and well-known actors from film and TV. Matt was recently the youth on set coach for Ava Duvernay’s Emmy winning Netflix series “When They See Us,” and has also coached on CBS “Blue Bloods,” “Orange is the New Black,” “Jessica Jones,” “The Affair,” as well as “Master of None” with Aziz Ansari. As a film director, Matt has directed four short films, is a recipient of a Best Director award, and has a TV series currently in development.
Matt earned a degree in Drama from Vassar College, where he studied acting under Erin Mee (daughter of Charles Mee) and Dennis Reid. He also studied at the highly regarded National Theatre Institute in Waterford, CT. After college, he trained with acclaimed teacher Arthur Mendoza at the Actor’s Circle Theatre in Los Angeles.
in the short time I have when coaching an actor for a big audition. Sometimes that involves using improvisation as a prep tool, to flesh out the character and shake the actor free of the memorized text, and sometimes it’s about finding their authentic truth in the scene, and using their innate personality to maximum effect.
How did you get into the coaching business – were you an actor yourself? I was a professional actor for ten years in Los Angeles and New York before turning to coaching.
Do you work with students of all backgrounds/levels? Mostly I work with professional actors 8 and up who are competing at the highest level, are working with agents and managers, and actively auditioning for tv and film. Do you focus on screen work/stage work, etc. The main focus on my acting studio (MN Acting Studio) is tv and film acting and auditioning. I still coach actors for Broadway, but our primary focus is on-camera.
Matt is also the author of the successful book “10 Steps to Breaking Into Acting” (available on Amazon, with a foreword by his sister Becki Newton, star of “Ugly Betty” and “How I Met Your Mother”),and writes a weekly advice column for Backstage Magazine. His current book “The No B.S. Guide to the Acting Biz” was just released on Amazon. Matt has been a professional actor in New York and Los Angeles for the past 14 years, and has appeared in dozens of television shows, films, commercials, and voiceovers. Matt’s first TV role was playing a blind football player on Comedy Central’s cult hit “Strangers with Candy.” Since then, Matt has guest starred in many shows, including “Criminal Minds”, “Ugly Betty”, “Drake” and Josh Go Hollywood, Gilmore Girls, All My Children, Dragnet, and most recently the FX TV series “The Americans” and USA’s “Royal Pains.” He has appeared in a half dozen national network commercials (McDonald’s, Volkswagon, Bud Light), as well as national voiceover ads for Sprint, Subway, McDonald’s, Volkswagon, and many others. On the film side, Matt has appeared in Van Wilder (starring Ryan Reynolds), Men Who Stare at Goats (starring Jeff Bridges), Dahmer (starring Jeremy Renner, and nominated for three Independent Spirit Awards), and the lead role in Poster Boy (starring Karen Allen and Oscar nominee Michael Lerner), for which he received rave reviews. He also won Best Actor at the Philadelphia First Glance Film Festival for his role in Nathan Crooker’s Peace of Mind.

Some famous actors you work with? I have worked with Aziz Ansari, Lisa Loeb, Elaine Hendrix, Tammy Blanchard, and many others. How is the acting scene in New York? It’s an incredible time to get an actor in New York right now, as there are over 60 tv shows filming and casting out of the city. There really is no need for a television actor to be in Los Angeles anymore. If there is a big role casting out of Los Angeles, an actor in New York can send in a self-tape. All actors need to be well versed in self-taping!
Because I had worked a lot as an actor, friends of mine started asking me for help with their auditions. I found that I enjoyed teaching acting even more than I ever thought. Since then I have opened two acting studios, written two books, and coached on some very cool TV shows. I found my calling! What are your methods/training techniques? At Vassar College I majored in Drama and studied a lot of different techniques. When I’m coaching, I find that there is no “one size fits all” approach. Each actor is so unique, and needs a different approach. My method is to use every trick in the book to get an incredible performance on-camera
Biggest piece of advice you would give to someone wanting to break into the business? Actors need to be working all the time, whether that’s in a class, a play, doing a reading, working on monologues. They need to train like an athlete if they want to compete at a high level. No matter where you live, it’s important to find out what options you have, and find an artistic community, whether it’s on a community theatre level, or on a professional level in a major market. Do your research, learn the business, build up your marketing materials, and learn the trade. Be the hardest working actor in the room. mnactingstudio.com Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook | @mnactingstudio

DOT-MARIE JONES
Making her Broadway Debut in Rock of Ages By Julie Sagoskin | Photographed by Caitlin McNaney
S
he might have starred as Coach Beiste in the popular show Glee, but now Dot-Marie Jones is ready to rock out in her stage debut as Dennis Dupree in the 10th Anniversary production of Rock of Ages! Being the first woman to play the beloved Bourbon Room bar owner in this cult favorite came naturally to Dot-Marie, who said she loves to play scruffy voices, even just for fun. “I also had an uncle who owned a bar – who took in ‘the strays,’ so-to-speak, and took care of them – it was a great place to go hang out, which is very similar to Dennis’s Bourbon Room!” Dot-Marie has been a diehard fan of the show for the last nine years, and is excited to bring her passion for it to New York audiences. “My wife and I love the music, it’s what we grew up with, and our daughters love the music too. I’ve seen the show 23 or 24 times. We saw it like 20 times in Vegas, plus I’ve seen it twice in New York and a couple weeks ago I went to the LA show. It’s so much fun, and we just fell in love with it the first time we saw it. When we came to New York in January, we could have gone to any play,

but we knew we’d have fun at Rock of Ages. I call it Old Faithful.” Glee might have featured many musical performances on screen, but this is the first live musical production Dot-Marie has ever done. “I’ve done one play at Pasadena Playhouse, about four years ago. It was a production of Our Town with Deaf West Company, so I had to learn how to sign – which was a lot of work, but absolutely amazing.” While she is usually on the other side of the show as an audience member, Dot-Marie has been able to enjoy the comradery of her fellow castmates. “Everyone has been so amazingly supportive and loving, and Matt Ban – who opened this production in the role of Dennis – is incredible. I love that man. This experience has been overwhelming, in the best way. I really couldn’t ask for a better cast.” Dot-Marie, who lives in a suburb of Los Angeles, is enjoying the chillier weather – and the restaurant scene
in New York! “It’s nice to have a little bit of cold, though we haven’t had snow yet since I’ve been here. New York is a different pace than I’m used to – LA is slower and more spread out, especially out where I live. But I love the comradery of the theater community here, because we don’t have as much theater in LA. The food here is on another level too. I really love this place across the street from my apartment, called Pongsri Thai Restaurant. We’ve gone there like three times in the past week. Hurley’s Pub has great food too.” How is she preparing for the show? “I read through my notes from the stage manager every day, and go through the choreography often, because I am not a dancer. I also go through lines at home with Bridgett, my wife. I want to do this role justice!” Catch Dot-Marie as Dennis Dupree in the 10th Anniversary Production of ROCK OF AGES at New World Stages (340 W 50th St) through April 19, 2020! rockofagesmusical.com

DR. SHARYN LEWIN Holy Name Medical Center By Bennett Marcus Treating Women: A Lifelong Goal From a very young age, Dr. Sharyn N. Lewin wanted to be a doctor specializing in treating women, thanks to the example set by her paternal grandmother, a gynecologist, who greatly influenced her as a child. “When I was a young girl, she talked to me about being a woman’s doctor. My earliest memory is from the third grade, but I always wanted to pursue a career in women’s health based on her influence.” The Lewin Fund Dr. Lewin is now the Medical Director of the Gynecologic Oncology Division at Holy Name Medical Center. She is also the President and Executive Director of The Lewin Fund to Fight Women’s Cancers®, a 501 ©3 charitable organization that supports women with cancer and their families. Dr. Lewin, a passionate women’s health advocate for over 20 years, began the fund to combat the serious challenge facing one in three women and their families – cancer. The Fund began through a generous gift from a patient who suffered from uterine cancer.
Mount Sinai Hospital The Lewin Fund has partnered with a peer mentoring program at Mount Sinai Hospital called the Woman to Woman Program, which matches women who are newly diagnosed with gynecologic cancers with survivor trained mentors. “A woman can see someone who had treatment and is in remission and doing well. It provides a lot of hope through example for these women as well as peer support, which is unique and invaluable.” The Fund supports Mount Sinai Hospital’s semiannual Woman to Woman Reunions, aimed at support and education for participants in the program.
Own Your Health The Lewin Fund is also committed to wellness and prevention initiatives to keep women cancer free. Dr. Lewin will host the Own Your Health Power Panel on Sunday, April 19th at the Temple Emanuel of the Pascack Valley in New Jersey. The event will feature top health and wellness experts including nutritionist Debbie Besson, acupuncturist Dorothy Chae, dermatologist Jason Chouake and yoga specialist Rochelle Spooner discussing the latest in cancer research, awareness and prevention as well as what you need to know to take charge of your heath. The talk is open to the public. For more information, go to TheLewinFund.org or call (929) 224-2293 A Gynecologic Oncologist As a gynecologic oncologist, Dr. Lewin specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and management of cancers specific to women - ovarian, endometrial, uterine, cervical, vulvar, and vaginal cancers. In her work, she saw that most women diagnosed with such cancers lacked various kinds of emotional and psychological support. Research highlights the lack of support globally for women with cancer. Recent studies have also shown that gynecologic cancers are underfunded in the nonprofit sector compared with other types of cancer, like breast, lymphoma and pediatric cancers. Three-pronged mission Founded in 2014, The Lewin Fund to Fight Women’s Cancers is focused on underserved communities. They have what Dr. Lewin describes as a threepronged mission, focusing on innovative research; grassroots support services for women with cancer and their families; and prevention and educational initiatives. The Lewin Fund has partnered with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, for example, to fund innovative research. “This is how we actually move closer to better treatments and cures,” Dr. Lewin says.

Albert Einstein in the Bronx In the BOLD Brothers & Sisters Program with Albert Einstein in the Bronx, patients’ children are matched with other children whose mothers and grandmothers have had cancer. “We know that the Bronx is the most underserved borough in New York with a high rate of single-mother homes,” Dr. Lewin says. “So you can imagine how tough it would be as a single parent to also be faced with a cancer diagnosis. This program has been tremendous in supporting children via participation in peer mentoring activities.” Underserved Women As another example, The Lewin Fund also funds transportation programs at Mount Sinai Hospital to help underserved women travel to their medical appointments. “There are so many unmet needs for women with cancer and their families,” Dr. Lewin says. “We are supporting thousands of women on a daily basis.” holyname.org thelewinfund.org

VICTORIA SHTAINER Compass: Real Estate Broker By Bennett Marcus Investing in Real Estate Victoria Shtainer, one of New York City’s top real estate professionals with over 18 years of experience, got into the industry for the best possible reason: when she and her husband were in the market to buy their first home, she fell in love with the profession. “We’d look at real estate, we’d get all excited and I thought this is such a fabulous job!” says Shtainer, who was a lawyer at that time. Her husband was also smitten and suggested that instead of putting all their savings into a 401(k) they should diversify and buy another apartment as an investment. “So I did. I started getting tenants in and making a secondary income for our family, and I had friends who called wanting to do the same, and a real estate broker was born.” Shtainer had found her calling. “I love being with people all the time, because this was a very intricate part of my life, and I stopped being an attorney and started doing real estate full time.” Team Speaks Nine Languages Her immigrant parents weren’t thrilled at her career change at first, but they’ve come around. And that immigrant background has proven to be an asset: she speaks Russian and Hebrew fluently, and others on the Victoria Shtainer team at Compass speak Spanish, Catalan, French, Italian, Georgian and Mandarin. “We’re very diverse, very international.” The team also includes a marketing professional, and they put out a weekly blog post, use Twitter, have an Instagram account with over 20,000 followers,

as well as an engaging website. instagram.com/ thevictoriashtainerteam From Elliman to Compass Shtainer worked for years at Douglas Elliman, winning many awards, and five years ago made a jump to Compass, which was new at the time. “They were looking for a strong female international lead, and I covered those aspects,” she says, adding that going from the established brand to a new, young company felt like leaping off a cliff. “They worked really hard to get me on board. I was agent #182, and now we’re 14,000 agents across the country. We did it.” Knack for discerning people’s RE needs While Shtainer has had many milestones in her career, like selling one of the most expensive tracts of land in Brooklyn for $21 million, she feels that her biggest successes are in the human aspect. She told the mother of her son’s friend who was renting in a building with no amenities that for the same money she could get a place with a basketball court, swimming pool, gym, and children’s playroom. “She wasn’t from New York, and I grabbed her by the hand at one of our play dates, and I said, you have four boys, they are full of energy.” The woman was amazed.” You knew I needed this before I knew I needed this,” she told Shtainer. “Because of you, I’m the most popular play date. Everybody wants to come to our house. I use all these rooms; they even have swim lessons for the children.”
Hudson Yards Shtainer suggested to a friend whose children had gone away to school that as an empty nester she should move to Hudson Yards, the swanky new development on Manhattan’s west side. Plus, the friend’s husband works nearby, so would require no commute. The woman called Shtainer a week later, ready to look and rented a 79th-floor apartment with spectacular views. With a state-of-the-art gym, roof deck, party space, and other amenities in one place, it actually cost less money, and she asked Shtainer to sell her old apartment. A Passion for her Job “I think that passion really defines what I do,” says Shtainer. “It’s not about the commission check, it’s always about the human aspect, and it’s what I’m most proud of, to be able to maintain a wonderful relationship with my clients and having them refer people to us because of a job well done. That’s very important to me, because it’s a very emotional process that we go through.” And yes, moving certainly is a tumultuous experience, and Shtainer, a mother of three, empathizes. “I move every few years, because I look at what’s coming in, and I end up buying, and then I move on and buy another one. I definitely practice what I preach.” compass.com
