NEVER A DULL MOMENT IN NYC WHERE NEWS AND POLITICS COLLIDE

I

t’s hard to believe that 2019 is nearly halfway through, as these months have literally flown by. With flowers coming into full bloom, this month marks the unofficial beginning of summer, with Memorial Day kicking off the summer season. As we head into the thick of the political campaigning season, we were thrilled to have Morning Joe host Mika Brzezinski and producer Daniela Pierre-Bravo as our cover stars to celebrate the launch of their new book, Earn It! The straight-talking guide bestows valuable career lessons for millennials. With a larger-than-life personality, Mika has a strong mantra of empowering women and mentoring the next generation. As a best-selling author of three books, her main political agenda is about wage equality for women and knowing your worth. Outspoken, assertive, direct, and compassionate, Mika is the perfect embodiment of today’s modern and successful careerdriven woman, while Daniela Pierre-Bravo, a DREAMer, represents the next wave of female millennials in the workforce. In this month’s issue, they discuss, politics, knowing your value, and how to truly get what you want. From Wall Street to Washington, on the other end of the political spectrum, we feature New York power couple Anthony and Dierdre Scaramucci. Wildly successful on the financial front, their very public lives have been fodder for the media. As a couple, they possess different political views, but the two have proven that opposites attract and stay together. Never ones to shy from the camera or the spotlight, they now have a popular podcast called The Mooch & The Mrs., and there is a reality TV stint in the works. These two share their secrets on how love can last in a high-profile relationship and how to put everything into perspective as they ride the wild rollercoaster of life together. “Be bold, be bright” is the theme for spring 2019 fashion trends. Bold 90s-inspired patterns and electric neons were the inspiration for our Electric Dreams fashion editorial and Double Trouble. The kick-off to the Hamptons season is around the corner, when the city’s social scene moves beachside out east and summer travel is underway. This month, we feature the relaxed golf destination of Streamsong, Florida, a NYC staycation, and the exotic landscapes of Thailand and Koh Samui. Whatever your political inclinations are, there will never be a dull moment leading up to the 2020 presidential race. Follow me on my adventures @hillarylatos

THE GRAND SALON The Great Frontier of Culinary Masterpieces By simon gusev The history of glass making goes back further than the memory of our known ancestors. The history of the most notable works of crystal making undoubtedly dates back to the establishment of the Baccarat factory. For over than 250 years, by burning the furnace non-stop at 1,400 degrees, award-winning artisans transform raw materials into beautiful objects of the interior, just like fresh and organic ingredients now reincarnate in delicious plates at Grand Salon in Baccarat Hotel NYC. Located in the heart of Midtown, The Grand Salon is a masterpiece of the upscale interior. Boasting with marble surfaces, silk-covered walls, premium parquet floors and plush, high-backed banquettes, the spacious space is crowned by a majestic chandelier that radiates with the luxuriant vibe. In the kitchen, behind the chic scene of the elite interior, is Chef Gabriel Kreuther. The Grand Salon’s culinary team strives to create a posh yet cozy dining experience. “We are here to bring happiness to people,” says Kreuther. “Make them feel welcome and share a good moment!” Born and raised on his family’s farm, Gabriel Kreuther was always surrounded by the fresh seasonal ingredients of his native Alsace. That is why the menu at the Grand Salon breathes with sophisticated classical French culinary options in a contemporary execution created from organic ingredients. Indulge in a unique fine dining adventure with The Grand Salon and Chef Gabriel Kreuther. Start by sampling tartlet with scallop tartare seasoned with fresh black truffle and light celeriac puree on the bottom. Proceed with wild mushroom soup with crispy mustard green ravioli and a touch of onion. Polish your meal with foie gras terrine breaded with toasted pistachio and served with smoked date jam, Strega and fennel. Or try out incredible petit pâté feuilleté baccarat, handmade savory pastry pies stuffed with veal, duck, guinea hen and foie gras, with a green salad on the side to emphasize the lightness of the plate. Don’t forget about the extensive beverage list, where you can find the best wine pairings for your meal. Besides the amazing all-day menu, the Grand Salon offers the majestic afternoon tea in partnership with Mariage Frères. Immerse in the unique experience with specialty blends of tea brewed by the restaurant’s tea sommelier. The afternoon tea course consists of the choice of your favorite beverage paired with chefselected canapés and petit fours. Currently, the restaurant has four courses such as King Louis XV as a French Tea at Versailles, Prince of Wales as an English tea at Windsor, Sultan Abdülaziz as a Turkish tea at Dolmabahçe Palace and Tsar Nicholas II as a caviar tea at Tsarskoye Selo. The history of The Grand Salon is just started, but it is already glowing with luxurious highlights of its noble chandelier and smells with fragrances of delicious plates served by Two Michelin-starred Gabriel Kreuther.

DRS. RAMTIN & SHEILA KASSIR Plastic Surgery’s Power Couple By Julie Sagoskin Photographed By JAIME PAVON

W

hen it comes to the perfect marriage and making their patients look picture perfect, Dr. Sheila Kassir and her husband, Dr. Ramtin Kassir, make it all look perfectly easy! With multiple offices and a new medical aesthetic spa called INSIDE BEAUTY on Park Avenue, this plastic surgery power couple is using the latest technologies as well as their own skin care products to build a global beauty brand. Dr. Sheila Kassir, who is already making a big impression in the plastic surgery field, also made a lasting impression on her well-known husband who she first met at an international conference – it was love at first facelift lecture! “I went to medical school and did my Plastic Surgery residency in Germany, where I’m from. Two years before I met my husband, I was working in Switzerland in the department of plastic-reconstructive-and hand surgery. Then I attended an international scientific meeting about facial plastic surgery in Tehran in order to learn more about facial aesthetics.

The keynote speaker was lecturing about facelifts and I was in the audience. I asked him a question afterwards and that’s how we first met. A little over a year later we were married!” The multi-talented and masterful Dr. Ramtin Kassir, who was born in Iran and grew up in Texas, has been focused on facelifts and other plastic procedures, including his most common and trademarked surgery, the Designer Rhinoplasty®, for over two decades. Many of Dr. Kassir’s family members are also in the medical field, including his father, who was a pediatrician. He explained that having his life partner also be his partner in the practice is pretty perfect because “she’s been trained in body and microvascular surgery and hand surgery, so she’s added a lot of specialties.” “Many patients ask us how it feels to work together as a couple and I just have to say that we really enjoy it,” added Dr. Sheila Kassir. “Every patient is really like a piece of art or project that we can

work on together and that makes it so special for both of us.” The couple is also expanding and recently set up INSIDE BEAUTY – a world class medical spa dedicated to nonsurgical facial and body rejuvenation for those patients who are not quite ready for surgery. Here is where beauty meets science and patient needs meet cutting edge technology, all without surgery. A team of beauty, medical and wellness professionals are ready to transform your appearance with advanced technologies and attentive, personalized care. With their energy devices devised to provide full face and body rejuvenation, you can realize your full beauty potential without the pain! Their one of a kind practice features EMSculpt, the brand new technology which gives you the so-called steel body treatment – the six pack in twenty minutes.

resident.com | 33

BEAUTY

“I mean 20,000 sit ups in 30 minutes, when can you do that? Never! We also have the Exilis, the non-surgical facelift, and it’s the only machine that combines ultrasound with radio frequency, that’s why it’s so efficient. We have a holistic approach to everything which is why we also offer pre and post surgical treatments to enhance and maintain your results. These range from scar creams, LED light, medical grade skin care, microneedling and microblading to IV infusions of vitamins, hormone replacement and oxygen therapy.” This aesthetically pleasing center for all things pertaining to aesthetics features non-invasive procedures which will have you looking and feeling like a whole new person – no recovery time required! Dr. Ramtin Kassir, who continues to lecture and instruct others on how to refine their surgical techniques, is ready to have his patients take these new technologies for a test drive, especially the EMSella: “Everything is there including the high-end technology which is electromagnetic waves that are used on muscle to tighten and build muscle all over your body. That same technology, called EMSella, is used on the pelvis for incontinence and vaginal rejuvenation. It’s been called the “Kegel Throne”! You simply sit on the chair and the treatment is started without even taking off your clothes. Like with EMSculpt, there is no down time, no pain, and no recovery.” When it comes to making sure her patients put their best and most beautiful face forward, the dedicated Dr. Sheila Kassir explained that “I’m different because I’m very honest. I tell my patients what I think is manageable and what I wouldn’t recommend, and they really appreciate that candor.” Dr. Kassir, who has become a global beauty guru – she travels around the world lecturing at scientific meetings and talking about what real beauty is and how beauty standards have changed globally. Social media plays a big role. It causes many new trends but also helps give an understanding of different beauty standards in different cultures. “When you’re looking at Asian role models on social media, they want to look very slim with no curves, plus they like to have pale skin and red lips. In the US, contrary to Asian role models, the ultimate role model is very curvy but has a slim waist. How can you do this without any help?” “When I’m here, people ask me about the European trends of beauty, and when I’m in Europe, people ask me about the newest technology and trends in the US, so we decided to open INSIDE BEAUTY and kind of merge all the global trends and offer the best procedures of different parts of the world. Her husband has also noticed how specialty and niche surgeries are growing exceedingly common due to online platforms, as well as how patients come in knowing exactly what they want after doing their own research. Dr. Kassir explained that “social media in the last five years has really popularized a lot of plastic surgeries and Instagram is a megaphone. They follow your page and request very specific things and that didn’t happen 23 years ago when I started my practice.” Dr. Sheila Kassir, who grew up in Germany to Persian parents, compared how clients in her native country perceive procedures versus those in

34 | resident.com

BEAUTY

America and said that “in general, people here are very well informed about plastic surgery procedures. In Germany, I see more patients who come in and ask for my opinion on what I think they should do to look fresher and younger, while in the US people come in and say I want my lips done, I want a slimmer waist and I want a D cup.” With two young children and two practices in New Jersey located in Ridgewood and Wayne, as well as their Upper East Side surgical center and spa and another space opening soon in Munich so that they can have a European base, this couple has grown their family as fast as their famed plastic surgery practice. “We were engaged after two months and married after nine months, and nine months later we had my daughter and then a boy, he’s almost 2 and she’s 3. It’s the best adventure of my life. My mom is here and she’s the best help, I can’t imagine leaving them with anybody else but my mom when I’m at work.” Though he always loved to draw, Dr. Kassir’s main artistic hobby aside from plastic surgery was clay sculpting, and you can even see some of his pieces in the office! Though he might expertly sculpt faces and clay, he explained that “my best work is going to be my kids, they are my masterpieces.” These doctors do indeed keep it all in the family – a tremendously talented and tight family. Their posh Upper East Side clientele, which includes many celebrities and actresses looking to this dynamo doctor duo to make their features appear as flawless as possible, get everything from PRP to non-surgical rhinoplasties, one of the most common procedures at the practice, according to Dr. Sheila Kassir. “It’s a painless ten minute procedure pioneered by my husband in 2006 – and you walk out with a new nose.”

36 | resident.com

This family practice is also composed of Dr. Kassir’s brother, a dermatologist who frequently comes in from Texas, plus staff who have become like family, including an OB-GYN working in female rejuvenation, as well as a nutritionist. They are also known in the city for the bridal packages that they offer - a feature which was inspired by Dr. Kassir’s own experience of trying to find the best places to prep for her big day. Aside from being a dermatologist, Dr. Kassir’s brother also has his own laser school with students from all over, so they are hoping to establish something in the New York center as well. Dr. Ramtin Kassir explained that “we have lasers but want to make it more didactic. Inside Beauty will have the latest in lasers to serve all needs, from facial rejuvenation to body rejuvenation.” Dr. Sheila Kassir, her husband and her brother-inlaw, recently re-launched their wildly successful skincare line together which they sell worldwide, including in their online store. Dr. Sheila Kassir says she’s always been obsessed with skincare and trying to find the perfect formula. The newest addition to their skincare line is the “Body Retinol.” “Retinol is the only scientifically proven anti-aging ingredient, but it only existed for the face, it never existed for the body and the hands. You want your skin to match the results of the surgical or nonsurgical body treatments that we offer, that’s why we developed “Body Retinol,” which became our top seller. “We’re trying to navigate that and be able to distribute that because we have such high demand. With patients from 130 countries, they want skincare products that they can trust, especially products that they can also use along with surgical or nonsurgical procedures to maintain their results,” added her husband.

When it comes to the future of looking fabulous, Dr. Ramtin Kassir explained that research is currently centered around things like breaking down nanofat into single fat cells, as well as stromal fat cells and stem cells and injecting them into parts of the body you’re trying to improve. “In 15 to 20 years it’s going to be all about robots and how robots have changed medicine, including plastic surgery. Fifty years from now someone is going to wake up and say I’m going to use some nanobots today,” he said. Regardless of new beauty breakthroughs, Dr. Ramtin Kassir is also certain that the driving force behind the determination to stay beautiful will never change. After all, he believes that it’s all about “morphological freedom” and the desire to feel in control, especially as you get older and start losing your looks. Dr. Sheila Kassir also enjoys giving back while learning about other cultures and is very involved with Interplast, a nonprofit organization which sends doctors to different countries, including Iran. While in Iran, Dr. Kassir worked on burns and cleft lips. When they’re not beautifying the world, Dr. Sheila Kassir and her husband find a way to make time for quality family time. From visiting the Museum of Natural History on the weekends with their kids to traveling across Europe, this plastic surgery power couple is more empowered than ever. hen it comes to giving back, philanthropist, humanitarian and author Jean Shafiroff stands out as a powerful leader—and one to watch closely in the future. Serving on the boards of seven different non-profit organizations and chairing and hosting numerous charity events each year, no one knows the meaning of hard work better than Jean. Named “the First Lady of Philanthropy” of New York by both Hello and !Hola! magazines, she is

one of the most successful and visible volunteer fundraisers and donors on behalf of countless charities throughout Manhattan, Long Island’s East End and now internationally. Dividing her time between homes on the Upper East Side and Southampton, Jean is well known for hosting elegant and memorable A-list galas, luncheons, brunches and lectures for a myriad of diverse causes she believes in, just some of which include helping the underprivileged, universal healthcare, women’s rights and animal welfare. Over the years, she has

served as the chair and host of galas for New York Women’s Foundation, Southampton Hospital, NYC Mission Society, American Heart Association, Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation, French Heritage Society, Couture Council, JBFCS, American Cancer Society, Ellen Hermanson Foundation, UNCF, Southampton Bath and Tennis Club’s Charitable Foundation and the Viennese Opera Ball. And when it comes to her indomitable spirit and passion, 2019 is no exception. In fact, for the elegantly turned out, two-time Columbia University graduate – who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physical therapy from Columbia’s College of Physicians and Surgeons and an MBA from Columbia Business School -- her year of giving is in full swing. So far, she has hosted and/or chaired events for the Viennese Opera Ball, Southampton Bath and Tennis Charitable Foundation, Tri-County Animal Rescue (Southern Florida) and NYC Mission Society. Later this Spring, she will host two cocktail parties in her private residences: one for Surgeons of Hope and the other for Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. In June, she will serve as co-chair of the New York City Mission Society Gala. Moving into July, she

will chair the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation Gala and then the Ellen Hermanson Foundation Gala. In addition, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital will honor her and her husband in August at their 61th Annual Summer Party. Also in July, she will officially join the board of the Stony Brook Southampton Hospital Foundation, making this her eighth board appointment. When the Fall begins, Jean will continue hosting and chairing events for several different charities including Surgeons of Hope and the French Heritage Society. Jean has been honored by countless different charities for her philanthropy and dedication. Some of these include the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, NYC Mission Society, JBFCS, Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation, Youth Counselling League, the Hadassah

, the NY Dominicans Women’s Foundation, NYC Film Festival and Surgeons of Hope. Aiming to inspire others to become more philanthropic by showing them how to take a similar path, Jean has also written a book – Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life by What You Give – which has been called “the ultimate guidebook on giving.” “We have an obligation to see the need in the world and address that demand,” Jean says. Besides her impeccable academic credentials and philanthropic prowess, Jean is equally well known as one of the best-dressed hosts-- and one of America’s top party givers. She has graced many best-dressed lists for her style and for her extensive ball gown collection. Most recently, in 2018 she was listed as

one of 12 the best dressed women of the world by The Daily Fashion Report. In January 2019, she was listed by thesalonniere.com as one of 2019’s top100 American party givers. When asked about her passion for fashion and style, Jean explains: “Style is an expression of oneself. When I am well dressed, I feel good. Fashion is a highly creative form of art. I am in awe of the incredible vision of so many of our of present-day fashion designers. My involvement on the board of the Couture Council of the Museum of the Fashion Institute of Technology has expanded my knowledge and love of the world of fashion. To wear and own the creations of some of our great fashion designers is a great privilege. For the past several years, I have also been collecting ball gowns. Most are the creations of American designers such as Oscar de la Renta, Zac Posen, Zang Toi, Carolina

Herrera, B. Michael and Victor dE Souza . Many are couture pieces. One day I plan to donate my collection to a museum. I look forward to that day. In the meantime, I am enjoying the experience of wearing them.” Jean’s two daughters and her husband Martin are also very involved in philanthropy. A few years ago, her youngest daughter co-founded her own charity called Global Strays, which strives to promote and improve animal welfare in countries that don’t have the proper resources to do it on their own. Jean is an active board member of Global Strays which currently funds animal rescue groups in Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic and Columbia. Recognizing the need to promote philanthropy through multiple platforms, Jean views social media as yet another important vehicle for garnering support

of various charities and encouraging others to donate their resources and volunteer their time. Towards that end, she currently has over 120,000 followers on Instagram alone. Besides supporting her favorite causes though social media, another passion of Jean’s is helping to promote up-and-coming designers in her social media posts. Jean’s humanitarian philosophy is apparent in everything she does. “I believe we are not just put on this earth just to consume and to just provide for ourselves and our immediate families,” she states. “We have an obligation to help those that have less than we do. When we share our resources, we come closer to understanding the true meaning of life.” To learn more about Jean, her favorite charities, and her philanthropic activities this summer, follow her on Instagram @jeanshafiroff

handwork, but have been blended with a sleek fusion of modern style, slimmer shoulder padding and more pronounced waist, creating a look that is both contemporary and unique. The bespoke suiting process takes 8-10 weeks, with the consultations happening in New York, and hand crafted on the legendary Saville Row. What are the essentials that every man should have in his wardrobe? A perfect fitting navy suit that can work well for work, interviews, graduations, weddings etc A go to sportscoat, preferably in navy with a soft touch fabric like cashmere which will be perfect for business casual and the weekend. A classic black tux, because you never know when you need one.

What is the ultimate work to evening dinner and cocktails look? A classic navy suit, it just works for all occasions. But do take off the tie for the cocktails. It’s wedding season - What should grooms be looking for in terms of trends, fabric, cloth for the groom and groomsmen? Always dress classically for weddings, we all have seen the flared suit our father wore during the 70’s, all of which dated badly. We suggest a light weight classic navy suit which wil always look smart and can be worn for years to come. Cad & The Dandy are open 9am – 7pm Monday – Friday, 10am to 5pm Saturday. For appointments email nyc@cadandthedandy.com or book an appointment on our website cadandthedandy.com

Tom’s commitment to perfection and ageless customized frames have conquered him a remarkable fanbase from high profile A-list figures like Ed Sheeran, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Rita Ora and Heston Blumenthal to sophisticated private clients. Filled with arcade game machines, spacious bar space and a massage room, the Tom Davies bespoke eyewear factory seems like an optical version of Silicon Valley. A couple of years ago, the brand transferred its factory from China to London, England. The reason for moving was to bring excellence to the native doorstep, creating jobs for local artisans while maintaining and maybe even improving the quality of eyewear. Tom is doing a lot of training personally with his UK staff at his new factory in West London that

will entirely manufacture the latest sunglasses collection. There are currently five Tom Davies Bespoke Opticians in London and none in the U.S., but with rapid expansion undergoing worldwide this year, the brand expects to be bringing over 10,000 pairs of frames per month from the British site to your doorstep. Nobody knows what to expect from the upcoming collection, but judging by past majestic eyewear models such as 18-carat gold sunglasses with goldplated lenses and salmon skin baked over buffalo horns, the brand will surely surprise its customers. Behold the knight of luxurious order, Tom Davies, creating new pairs of splendid glasses with the most personal touch you can get. There are 400 independent opticians in the US offering a simpler Tom Davies Bespoke service called Custom. This can be done with any Tom Davies ready to wear collection and then having the frames re-made to fit the customers’ features. All stockists are on our website.

How did you get the idea for your podcast, Mooch and the Mrs., which gives listeners an inside glimpse into your personal life and marriage? Why do you think it’s been so successful? Anthony: I was invited on a talk radio show at the Entercom affiliate in Los Angeles, KNX, and Ken Charles is the director there. I walked in with my wife and Ken looked at me and said wait at minute, I thought you guys got divorced. I said that’s on page one of the tabloids, but you’ll read on page 99 that we reconciled. He said, would your wife mind coming on the show and we’ll interview the both of you, so we did a 15 minute interview together about our relationship, about politics, about things that have gotten us into trouble domestically and about how tense things are in society right now politically. When we got done, the radio directors there said listen, we can turn this into a podcast and something bigger than that down the road. Six weeks later, after Labor Day, we were at 345 Hudson Street in New York City and we’re going to be doing our 30th podcast today. We have picked up advertisers and it’s getting a high frequency of downloads. We pick different topics – political, professional, domestic, and husband and wife bickering! Deidre: There’s a little bit of a comedic twist to it. I tease Anthony a little bit which most people don’t do, so I think that’s one of the appeals. We are on

66 | resident.com

the show just like how we are in real life. There is nothing we don’t know about each other. It’s fun for people to listen to us in our element and hear Anthony in real life, it’s a window into our real personalities. Labor Day will be a year since we started, and we have been able to do a lot of fun things around it. Anthony’s always been in the spotlight, I was always more in the background. I’m not as into political stuff as Anthony, I go roped into politics. I pay more attention to lifestyle things and being a mom. Part of what people enjoy most is our different opinions while not being completely insane to one another. We can have political discourse in a funny way and keep it light. I can insert myself into his little world – he’s so expressive and so it’s a nice way for me to weigh in on things. We can go to therapy without going to therapy! How have people responded to your unique style? What do you hope to convey? Deidre: There are lots of followers who say thanks for doing this, and I feel good about it. If I can be married to someone who has different views on life and politics, than we should be able to have conversations on life at dinner. I think everyone should be able to speak to everyone in a kind and civil manner. They also say it’s nice to see people

take their relationship seriously rather than just disposing of it. Just in general, people are quick to separate, so it gives people hope. Anthony: A listener, Marita, who I don’t know but she found my email, said ‘I listen to your podcast and I love it, absolutely love it, it’s so real, so raw and so engaging. I can tell you love each other and you have differences but you work them out every day. It’s been great for me and my husband.’ I do think there is a vacuum of what I would call normalcy which is some levels of dysfunction, rationality, and a little bit of confusion and love and all of that comes together. Deidre: When you open yourself up there are also a lot of social media trolls. Anthony posted a picture of me and this person was like you’re wife needs to get it together, her nails are chipped. I have kids, I don’t have time to get my nails done every day! How has it been adjusting to life in the spotlight with your family? Deidre: We have a combination of five kids. The older ones are well on their way so it was tougher on them having their dad in the spotlight, it’s taken more of a toll on them. We’re back to whatever normal is and our two little guys have no clue what’s been going on, we’re just like regular people.

cover

How did you make it through your very public personal drama? Anthony: It’s important to understand you can be “tabloided” in the Post and still love each other, you just have to drop your pride and your ego and say let’s see if we can fix those mistakes. I was being photographed in divorce court and I saw my wife’s aunt and uncle and I love them, I wanted to talk to them, but I knew I had to wait. I would tell people any time I put my pride and ego in something, my emotions are high and my intelligence is very low. I think that resonated in our first interview on the radio, that I love Deirdre and I want it to work out. A lot of couples have a hard time, everybody has something. Deidre: I think people can be quick to discard a relationship or take the easy way out by walking away. We showed people that it’s possible to work through things. How do you reflect on your time at the White House? Anthony: It happened very quickly, the president asked me for a specific job. I obviously made a series of mistakes but learned about eating humble pie and the redefinition of what’s really important in life. In hindsight, there were a lot of valuable things that happened to me - I worked in the West Wing, flew on Air Force One – growing up in a blue collar family, that would be an atypical thing to have happened, but as painful as my departure was, I look on it with fondness and it helped me recapture the things in life that are important to me. Do you think President Trump will win in 2020? What do you think about the current political climate? Deidre: I think he has a shot at winning. I think he has a strong base, he appeals to people on many levels. I think we’ve taken it to a whole new level with the division, and people on the right are super on the right and people on the left are very on the left, we’re on a very slippery slope. As they say, the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t. I think Democrats are becoming so extreme that it’s working against them to some degree. We’ll see how it plays out. Things are driven by the

economy, people want jobs and to be able to support their family, so at end of the day, if you can support your loved ones you’re probably going to put the person responsible for that in office – he has that on his side. Anthony: I would add that it’s hard to beat an incumbent, and despite the rhetoric and the nonsense of the media and the president’s roughness in the media as well, I think he’s still very popular. I think people have a tough time admitting that they’re going to vote for him but they’re going to vote for him. He has a huge support base. I can’t tell you the number of people at the Golden Globes and in Hollywood who come up to me quietly and say I want you to know that I support the administration. What has made SALT such a successful gathering? Any surprises people can expect this year for the ten year anniversary? Anthony: We do the conference every year at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, if you go to salt.org you will see all the content we have out there. It’s a big event and we’re proud to put it on. It’s very bipartisan

70 | resident.com

and Diedre helps us curate the event to make sure it has a good balance and cross section of ideas. We have people who have worked for the Trump administration and the Obama administration and Hollywood liberals and conservative talk show hosts. It’s very well blended and people can hear opposing points of view but in a civilized way. We are in a coarser society and so our goal is to make the discourse less coarse. We’re going to try to tie it into the Woodstock revival of 1969, so we’re bringing John Fogerty of the band Creedence Clearwater Revival, and he’s going to sing from his 1969 playlist to tie things back to ’69 and our anniversary. Deidre: The demographic of the conference is about 55 so they’ll appreciate it – it will be fun to bring him back! Any new projects coming up? Anthony: The paperback edition of my new book, Trump, The Blue-Collar President, just came out and I will most likely start writing my fifth book

mid to late summer. It will be more economically related about how to think like an investor in an environment like this. Deidre: I would love to do more things together and apart. It has brought us some other opportunities, I’m sure more things will come up. Do you miss being on television as the host of Wall Street Week? Anthony: I’ve actually gotten more television exposure after being in the White House and now can do multiple appearances a week. What are your favorite things to do as a family? Anthony: We like camping. Our version of camping is The Four Seasons or The Ritz Carlton! Favorite places to travel? Any trips planned? Anthony: We’re spring breaking at Disney, we’ve been on a few Disney cruises. Our favorite destination is Hawaii, we go about once a year.

MIKA BRZEZINSKI & DANIELA PIERRE-BRAVO Mentoring Millennials and Waging a War on the Wage Gap By don winer Transcribed By Julie Sagoskin Photographed By Miller Hawkins

S

he might be best known for her MSNBC show Morning Joe, but Mika Brzezinski and Know Your Value millennial contributor Daniela Pierre-Bravo are offering cups of confidence for women starting out in the workforce with their upcoming book, Earn It! Know Your Value and Grow Your Career, In Your 20s and Beyond. Since Mika’s first book, Knowing Your Value was first released in 2011, she has found a fan base of women who are looking for tips and techniques when it comes to receiving the recognition they deserve and realizing their financial worth. With the new book, as well as lectures across the country, Mika and Daniela are ready to reenergize women entering or reentering the workplace. Much of the book also focuses on Daniela’s own personal stories and struggles with finding her way in the world of the workforce. Daniela, a Morning Joe producer and DREAMer, did indeed realize her dreams of moving from a small town to a big city and doing whatever it took to remain afloat, and now she is hoping to spread her message to others who are also in need of guidance when it comes to networking and negotiating. Together, Mika and Daniela are trying to change

the narrative when it comes to what women want and need to succeed, as well as educating men on how to retain female talent. From harnessing your ambition to understanding how to advance every step of the way, their message is meant for millennials as well as more mature women – girl power never looked so empowered. What do you love most about New York City? Mika: I love how you can be anybody. You just blend in, and everyone’s just like ‘yup’ — and they keep moving on. I spend a lot of time in many Manhattan neighborhoods and it’s not uncommon to run into celebrities or famous intellectuals. But it feels like this unspoken word. It’s just a place where everybody can be anybody. It’s also feels very unified. I covered 9/11 terrorist attacks and was one of the first reporters down there for CBS. Overnight, and then over the course of being literally down at Ground Zero for six weeks straight, I found a unity with New York that was indescribable and deeply emotional. I spent a lot of nights running through alleys, tripping over debris and working alongside firefighters, garbage men, homeless people, whoever. We all were there to report on the story or to help and console people.

To be a New Yorker during 9/11 was like being part of this huge, intertwined, extremely tight family. What are you favorite go-to restaurants? Mika: I don’t go out much, but we order in Shun Lee and The Leopard at de Artistes, and we literally don’t deter from those at all. And then we’re known to have dinner at The Polo Bar with friends. Which historical figure do you admire the most? Mika: Pope John Paul II and my dad. Who do you think has been the most significant president of the United States? Mika: Trump, but for all the wrong reasons. How would you describe your show which has become wildly successful? Mika: We are a fun family that came together from all different points of view, walks of life and personalities. We started out as sort of an island of civility in a sea of shrill voices, and now we’ve become a team of minds, intellectuals and analysts. Our family has found ourselves in the midst of a fight for the truth.

How do you think your show has shifted since you first started? Do you think the show has taken on more of a mission and responsibility? Mika: We struggle with striking the right balance. My co-hosts Joe Scarborough, Willie Geist and I have definitely transformed, but I would actually say that the situation has changed. It used to be that we were trying to create a place where there could be a civil discourse, and that was the challenge. It was to challenge Democrats and Republicans, you know, can Democrats and Republicans still get along? And where can we do that and still have a civil discourse? There’s a lot of fighting on cable, but we try to be better, and that’s a very worthy but also a very attainable goal. If you’re a decent person and you believe in a civil discourse you can be on Morning Joe. If you come in with talking points, you’re never going to survive. If you come in with BS, you’re not going to survive. If you come in and you’re not civil, you’re not going to survive, and that was our show. Now there are Republicans and Democrats, and then there’s this other thing: Trump World. And I don’t know what side that’s on. It’s not right or left to me, it’s not conservative, that’s for sure. And if you talk to a solid, conservative Republican, they don’t like Trump. It’s not adherent to conservative principles. It’s not adherent to democratic principles. It’s not adherent to the truth, and that is where we find ourselves today. Whatever you want to call us, or however you want to categorize what it is we’re doing, we’re doing our best under circumstances that are not the norm. What are your feelings on women’s empowerment and how did helping women become such a passion project for you? Mika: The concept of Know Your Value, a nationwide movement I launched, came out of my own experience negotiating my salary and I’ve always been really good at training women to execute and communicate effectively on television. I enjoy doing communications training with women. I love watching people grow, but I realized that in my own negotiations, I had let myself down every step of the way. From the time I was 40, I was practically negotiating against myself. When I wrote the first version of Knowing Your Value and it came out, I realized I had touched a universal nerve. It became an instant bestseller and people were literally mobbing me saying ‘I read your book, I got a raise.’

We updated that book this past fall with new techniques, interviews and lessons I’ve learned along the way. It’s continuously a successful experience for women who read it and are looking for a better understanding of how to know their value and communicate it effectively. In the midst of those two books, the first release and then the re-release Know Your Value, I started doing events around the country where we actually talk about these messages on stage, hear from other women and really roll up our sleeves and explain to people the techniques of knowing their value. Along the way, I heard back from a lot of women. Young women especially had questions, and women at a more mature age, over 50, also had concerns. The bottom line is that the message is universal. When did you realize Daniela was the perfect person to help reach a younger generation through your original message? Mika: Daniela is a booking producer on Morning Joe who actually started at the very bottom, getting my coffee in the very morning hours. When a staffer got sick, she was quickly put on a plane ride to an event I had to host. We were going from a live taping of Morning Joe to a woman’s event, and she had to sit next to me on the plane. She took her moment to really ask a lot of questions about the Know Your Value message for young women. She told me her story, and then she also pitched and said that women like her, Latinas, who came from middle America, might not find it so easy to get valuable working experiences and internships in big cities. She said it’s harder to get access, and that she wanted to help them. She told me her story of how she got to New York and how she was sending out resumes while working side jobs, trying to pay for college, and how she got a call back for an unpaid internship after lying on her resume that she was right around the corner from them in New York City. Really, she was in Ohio. Her potential employer said can we interview you some time ridiculously soon and she said ‘sure, I’ll be there’, and she got on four buses, drove through the night, ended up at Port Authority bus station, washed her hair at the Port Authority bathroom, went to the interview, nailed it and got the job. But the stipend was so low, so she then became a dog walker, a babysitter, and two other jobs just to be able to live in New York.

Daniela showed me what she had to do to earn it, and she showed so much unbelievable tenacity. But also when she was talking to me in the moment, she was elegant, she was not braggadocios, in fact I had to pull it out of her practically. She is a DREAMer, she spent much of her formative years wondering if she was even going to be okay to work here. I thought ‘my gosh, not only is this an incredible story, but you’re an incredible person, and I’ve got to start launching people in the Know Your Value motion who live it’, so she became my co-author for this book. Her story is in it, and she has become kind of our liaison to younger women. Where do you feel we are right now in terms of the status of women? Mika: I think we’re making strides. I think there’s a lot of strides still to come and some are of our own necessity. Some are the parts of the equation we can control and that’s what Know Your Value is about. Yes, there is data that’s against us. There is data that shows that we have an ambition gap, that we deter ourselves from risks or from promotions because we don’t know if we can do it all. Many of us are so grateful just to be there because we can actually have a job and kids, so we become self-deprecating, needy and kind of scurrying around just so grateful to have a job. This is all behavioral, this is all us thinking the world hasn’t changed and that male managers don’t understand. I was recently in Detroit speaking to Fiat Chrysler and several men stood up as I was delivering my message. One man stood up and said “Please use these techniques. All I need to know is what you need.” Another person said, “If you can tell me with your mouth and words what it is you need in order to make it so that you can do the job, I’ll make that happen.” I actually went up to him. I walked across a football field size room and gave him a big hug and the room erupted in applause because it’s true. A lot of people who run companies are good people and they want to retain female talent. They just need to know how and we can help them. Any structural barriers that need to be addressed or it’s more of a behavioral issue? Mika: I work on the part that we can control, the behavioral. Even going and talking to companies

resident.com | 75

cover and having that open conversation changed everything in that room. It was about 500 women and everybody went back to their work stations that day feeling like ‘Oh my god, I can do this.’ So a lot of it is just having the conversation, but the cultural shift that needs to take place especially in the age of Me Too is real, and there’s a lot of communicating that still needs to happen to get to the next level.

What are the biggest challenges that you have faced which have gotten you to where you are? Daniela: I’m originally from Santiago, Chile, and moved to the USA permanently when I was 11 or 12 to a small town in Ohio, called Lima. Yes, that town where Glee is based on. I then wound up going to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. I came from a place where I struggled financially growing up, and also experienced a lack of access and networks, because coming from a small town in Ohio where your parents themselves are sort of learning the ropes, I didn’t really have a lot of professional mentors to look up to. It’s hard when you’re in college and you’re struggling to figure out how you’re going to make the next payment for school while at the same time figuring out how to get a leg up as you’re entering the workforce. The summer before I graduated I tried to do everything I could to get a foot in the door. I ended up applying anywhere and everywhere in New York City, and sort of used my marketing background as a way in. What I really wanted to do was work in media. I wanted to help shape how culture was told and bring in new voices and faces to the table because I didn’t see that growing up, so that was something that was really important to me. I didn’t know how I was going to get there so I applied to a bunch of places and I ended up hearing back from P. Diddy’s Bad Boy entertainment company, which had a small marketing agency called Blue Flame at the time, and on my resume I said that I lived in New York City. So I think I put an NYU dorm or a Columbia dorm address. We had a screening interview over the phone while I was still in the middle of Ohio and they said ‘we noticed that you’re local, can you come in to the interview in the next few days?’ so without thinking about it I said yes, I’ll be there! Of course I couldn’t get on a plane or drive there because I didn’t have a state ID (I was at the time without DACA), so I wound up scouring the Greyhound bus website. I had never been on a long bus ride before, but ended up getting on a bus a few hours later. For eighteen hours through the night, like 9 stops along the way, I didn’t sleep. I got to smelly Port Authority, cleaned up and just went straight to the interview. I ended up telling them that I had traveled from Ohio and they were really impressed. It was unpaid, but I got the internship at Bad Boy in the marketing agency, and then I had another unpaid internship at MTV networks.I really struggled to just get by in New York City that summer, so I worked everything under the sun. I was a babysitter, I was a pet sitter, I walked dogs during my lunch break, I was a club

How important is charity work to you? Any specific charities you’re most involved with? Mika: I’m on the board of UNHCR. I think that we need to be mindful of the challenges of immigrants and people of color given this administration, and there are so many ways that we can be supportive and inclusive to people that are being maligned by this administration. On the Know Your Value front, we have partnerships that we’re building. We love Dress for Success and we’re working on making some announcements on the philanthropic front in the next year because we have a big event in New York that we’re working on.

promoter, and another job at a bar, I was making it work any way that I could. That summer really gave me the experience that I needed to apply for the NBC pPage Program and I also thankfully got DACA, which allowed me to apply for a work permit. How did you build a relationship with Mika and become a millennial contributor and liaison for the Know Your Value platform? Daniela: I made my stints around NBCUniversal working at Saturday Night Live, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon as an NBC Page, and then landed at Morning Joe. I had an assignment with the show for about a month and was offered a full time role, and that’s how Mika and I started working together. And in the book we talk about how to make yourself stick out in a good way, how to resonate with people who can help your career. I remember doing everything that I could to get Mika’s coffee perfect, even if it meant standing outside Starbucks pleading with the Barista to open early so she could have it the moment she walked in. That was something that was important to her and really made a difference, even if it migh seem like a small detail. I went from printing her scripts, getting her coffee every morning, sorting out her clothes to her being like ‘Hey, do you want to come to this fashion shows with me? Can you come to this other event with me?’ So it really snowballed into us having more of a working relationship together. Then, two years into this working relationship where I was supporting her as a coordinator for the show and working as a sort of part-time assistant to her unofficially, I told her my back story. We were out on the campaign trail in South Carolina for the 2016 primary season and I was on set at 4AM as I usually was and half way through the morning show Mika said somebody who was supposed to staff her that afternoon for a speaking engagement in Chattanooga, Tennessee fell sick, and asked if I could fill in. We went from South Carolina to Chattanooga on a plane, and that was sort of the perfect alone time with her where I could tell her what I was cooking up and my idea for creating a platform for other young women who needed access or wanted to learn from professional mentors that they didn’t have, Something I wished existed when

78 | resident.com

I was younger. That idea was based on my own struggle. I knew that she had grown this amazing brand called Know Your Value, and I asked for her advice on how I could create a platform to expand that sort of message for young people starting out. That plane ride really changed everything, and a couple of months later she called me on New Years Day and she’s like ‘We’re writing a book Together!”, and that sort of really initiated our relationship as collaborators. How personal has this book project been for you? Daniela: Mika has built an incredible brand, but Ipitched to her very purposefully because I knew the struggles of other young women, whether they’re well connected and don’t know how to leverage their network, or whether it’s minorities, Latinas, or women of color who come from a background of cultural disadvantage, and there’s a lot of things that play into that. One of the things I wanted to help young women with is knowing how to find networks, grow their own, and open up access for themselves. Being first generation, my parents worked two and three jobs, and I really had to figure things out for myself. I didn’t have professional mentors showing me the way. I was learning the language when I was 11 or 12, but also trying to figure out how to blend in and keep up with the cultural nuances, trying to figure out how to get to college despite my status etc. I think that getting yourself in the door has a lot to do with networks and who you know, and that can either impair your ability to gain access or really catapult you into advancing. For women, we already see so many things that hold us back, whether it’s starting out in the workplace with the wage gap disadvantage, or struggling to get into the door because of unconscious bias. I want to help young women change that narrative. In the book we talk about my own story, and it’s important for me to create a sense for these young women, for this next generation, to say it’s not about not seeing people that look like me at the table, but it’s about looking inward and working on having a strong sense of self to identify the tools and the values we have and really sell them to get a seat at the table. It’s about saying, How can I empower myself to be the first person at the table? It’s about owning your journey and defining your own career

narrative and thinking beyond your barriers and challenges. Whether it’s financially not being able to afford it or not having the access to networks, or being far away from the opportunities that you want. I’m hoping that my story can inspire others to bridge a gap between their ownlimiations , whatever that might be, and access to get them where they want to go, and creating that career that you want for yourself. What do you foresee for the future of Know Your Value? Daniela: Mika has given me a really great opportunity to be a millennial ambassador, and millennial contributor, for Know Your Value, so I’ve really owned and created all the content that goes into the website for the next generation. So what does knowing your value mean for millennials or for Gen Z? I think that it incorporates a lot of things. For example, we just did a piece on maximizing your finances for millennials, and one of the conversations that we had was what to do that when you’re starting out and barely making any money and trying to invest in yourself. As a Latina, for example, and in the case of many Latinos and other minorities, studies show they’re more than half of the 10 million caregivers in the US, and so they’re taking care of their family and balancing ways to invest and save for themselves and earning very little staring out. So it’s about owning the narrative of all of the facets that are holding women back when it comes to advancing. Part of that is financial independence.Coming into the work force and advocating for yourself from the start is very important; and not being afraid to ask for the money that comes with that. And that is all part of Know Your Value and it’s so important for the next generation to embrace. And millennials have tons of challenges unique to their generation. For example, we are a generation that has so much student debt and have a higher cost of living than other generations did at our age. We really want to dig in on solutions to empower the next generation. Something that we talk about in the book is that studies show that women already start out at a lower rate than their male counterparts and rarely catch up, so when it comes to the wage

gap conversation as a whole, young women have an important role to play. And there are allthese mixed messages, you’re supposed to be working long hours and be eager and show that you’re willing to do anything, but where’s that middle point where you say ‘well, I can do all those things, but also raise my voice and advocate for myself, and identify the timing for the next step?’ Millennials also have all these stereotypes - that they’re entitled or that they’re selfish etc. - so it’s kind of working within that ecosystem and dispelling those stereotypes and embrace ways to be ambitious and still really good at your job – Finding ways advocate for yourself, advance in your career, and getting the appropriate compensation that goes with it. What we want do is really expand this multifaceted conversation to really empower women in the next generation in many different ways to ultimately get them the money they deserve when it comes time to negotiating and advocating for themselves. Who is the book meant for? Daniela: It’s for women starting out in the work force, but there are istons of advice that women of all ages can gain from. We talk about my story of overcoming and my struggle to get in the door, in hopes other young women might find inspiration to own their career narrative and get closer to their own goals. There were so many different factors which should have held me back from getting my foot in the door or getting on that bus for 18 hours because there wasn’t that clear linear path for me, so I think despite the fact that you might not be a DACA recipient or undocumented, many women and men struggle with the same things, so it’s really putting the onus into young people to own their career trajectory. We talk about strategies to grow your network if you don’t have one. We have strategies and tips to gain access to networks and what to do to leverage them. We go through how to interview successfully, and talk about how to advance and gain leverage when you’re in the job. What I’ve noticed, especially in this industry, is that there are so many nuances when it comes to communication and when it comes to being able to advocate for yourself in a meeting or in the negotiating room. We want to give young people a leg up, especially when it comes to communicating effectively. In the book we also talk about what to do when you feel stuck. I think a lot of millennials go through this in their late 20s. What to do when

80 | resident.com

you’re in a toxic environment in the workplace, and what do you do if you’re stuck or if you want to start over and you’re not happy in the career that you have currently. And then we talk to tons of young people who have done the corporate thing or who have worked for agencies or for other people and who now work for themselves. The book is a really great guide book for women who are starting out,but also still makes sense after a few years in the workplace. It encompasses all the life stages that women go through, not only right before they’re starting out, but as they’re developing in the workplace. How does ambition play a role for women looking to advocate for themselves? Millennial women are very ambitious. I think that there are so many negative connotations with ambition, but women really need to own their ambition, because that’s what’s going to get us to where we need to go, and it’s going to get us from a place of working long hours and being scrappy to the next step. We just need to be able to translate that ambition in a way that gives us leverage to advance. What gets in the way is the mental clutter that young women tend to have, because we’re so hard on ourselves, and we make up stories about what people are saying about us that in some cases are not true. We feel like we need to be liked in the workplace and we stress over it and it takes up so much space in our heads and it distracts us from thinking clearly. It gets in the way of our advocating power because we begin to self-doubt ourselves. We need to stop taking everything personally at work. I think one of the reasons why I think it’s so important to share this message with minorities and especially Latinas is because we did a study with Harvard University for this book on a lot of different topics, and one of those things is ambition. When it came to how women viewed ambition, millennials are embracing that word more and more, but what we found was that Latinas still have a harder time than white women embracing that word and seeing that as a positive attribute. I think a lot of it has to do with our cultural upbringing, the way that we’re taught to be, the way we were taught to be patient and that good things will come to you if you wait. I think with the book and all these opportunities to speak to young women and the work that we’re doing with Know Your Value, we’re really stripping down that misconception that ambition is a bad thing. With my role at Know Your Value I’ve gotten

to interview incredible women, of all different backgrounds, and it’s important to highlight these women anddiverse voices to show the next generation a roadmap or pathway to how their dream professions can be manifested. And one of the most important things to get there is to be deeply ambitious. Do women need more guidance when it comes to asking for what they want in the workplace? Daniela: Mika talks about this, and it’s that men for some reason are just better at this, and I think women have a little bit of catching up to do. Women in their 40s and 50s are the ones that have brought this message to the forefront. I think that women that are just entering the workplace are at such an advantage when it comes to owning their ambition and asking for what they’re worth because they’re coming into the workplace with this message and really feeling empowered to be able to do it. Now the key is to be able to put the onus on yourself, to find the words to get you to the next step, being able to practice communicating effectively and to keep tabs on the work that you’re doing. One of the places where women get stuck is when they start out working and working, and then a few years go by and they have to find that moment where they need to speak up and advocate for themselves to move forward;, and not feel like being ambitious is a bad thing. Because that is going to hold you back and it creates a ripple effect. You need to be able to get paid what you’re worth at every step of the way, so women need to be more comfortable not asking for more money, but doing it frequently and really keeping tabs of when their value is up, as Mika would say. What about the book and this brand makes you feel most proud? Daniela: I love being able to open up this conversation to young women and the next generation and in specific minorities and marginalized groups, it hits close to home. It’s a struggle that I faced personally, I know women going through the same thing, and women that have felt really inspired by my narrative and have overcome their own barriers. It’s all about empowering other women to dig deep and believe in themselves and find a way to be ambitious and get ahead in the workplace despite their own barriers to success. I’m excited to see where we go from here.

ARISTOTLE HATZIGEORGIOU The Philosopher of Hospitality By w. a. muller Photographed By neil Tandy

A

ristotle “Telly” Hatzigeorgiou is a nightlife impresario. He has spent over two decades creating and growing some of NYC’s most notable establishments, building brands that have grown and grown rapidly. The Lure Group CEO’s nightlife portfolio includes Clinton Hall, which has five locations across three boroughs and Slate, which will celebrate its 20th Anniversary next year. And Spring will bring even more growth to Hatzigeorgiou’s thriving hospitality empire with the opening of The Lookup at the Metro Hotel, the Clinton Hall Gigawatt Garden at the POD 51 Hotel, Clinton Hall Rooftop at the POD BK Hotel and a new Slate pop-up in Williamsburg.

What did you do before opening your business? I graduated from NYU with a degree in Economics and Finance and went on to work for Chase Manhattan Bank in Global Securities, I met some great people. I was responsible for investing pension funds for large corporations. After 4 years I realized I was drawn to hospitality. What brought you to the world of hospitality? During my time in finance, I always knew that I wanted to build my own business. My aha moment came after watching the movie “Color of Money,” which revolves around a pair of cool pool hustlers. As the credits rolled, I knew then and there that I

wanted to open up pool halls. In 1992 I opened the doors to my first location called Bayside Billiards Cafe in Bayside, Queens. Following soon after were Millennium in Flushing and The Billiard Company in Forest Hills. Back in the early 90’s it was prohibited to serve alcohol in venues with two or more pool tables. Despite that, we were very busy and successful but of course, everyone wanted a beer. I realized sales would skyrocket even more if it was legal to serve alcohol. And so, I embarked on a tireless battle with SLA to have the laws changed. I learned the ropes of the nightlife business over the course of my first 8 years. That experience led to me opening Slate in 2000.

What makes you different from your competitors? The unique experience you get at Slate and Clinton Hall makes us different from our competitors. For me it’s all about having fun, bringing people together and pulling them away from their desks to socialize over great beers and great food. The spaces I own are casual cool. You don’t have to dress up to have a great night, you can loosen your tie, let your hair down and enjoy the moment. How did you conceptualize Slate and how has it evolved over the years? Slate was always my dream place. I thought to myself, if I were the richest man in the world, what would my basement look like? It would have everything Slate has starting with pool and ping pong tables, a DJ booth at the foot of a massive dance floor where over 1,000 of my closest friends could come and hang out at a grand, industrial chic 16,000 square foot space. We recently added a 20 foot stainless steel and glass slide, a mini 3 lane bowling alley adjacent to the secret karaoke room. Additionally, one can also enjoy skee-ball, pinball and an 8-player foosball table. If you are thirsty, you can Be Your Own Bartender (BYOB) at our new pouring station with over a dozen adult beverages on tap. Your Clinton Hall brand is a juggernaut with 5 locations across 3 boroughs. How did you come up with it and what sets it apart? It all started with Beekman Beer Garden Beach

86 | resident.com

Club in 2011. The venue was wildly successful. It had a 4,000 person capacity, our beer sales were as high as the likes of Yankee Stadium. It introduced me to the world of craft beer and I must say it’s a fascinating business. That led me to opening my first Clinton Hall in 2013. The Bronx followed not too long after and to say it was well-received would be an understatement. The three pillars of Clinton Hall, AKA our DNA, are Supercraft beer, mouthwatering food and an abundant choice of nostalgic games. I decided to trademark the word Supercraft since we feature twenty rotating draft beers on tap, that are served precisely to each Brew Masters specs thanks to our on-site Flux Capacitor. We like to joke that if you’ve heard of the beer, we don’t sell it. We encourage our guests to try something new. The family style signature dishes are a spin on traditional beer hall cuisine such as our famous Doughnut Grilled Cheese, Fondue Burger and W.T.F Waffles. Our featured games are giant Jenga, Connect 4, Chess in addition to many board and card games.

Are there any achievements you are especially proud of ? Yes, I am very proud of my family and my two boys. When it comes to business accomplishments, I am most gratified to see how the brands I built have stood the test of time. I am fortunate to witness our customers having a joyful time while loving our food and drinks. Clinton Hall’s Double Smashed Burger was the winner of Burger Bash 2018 People’s Choice Award at the New York City Wine and Food Festival. That was a tremendous achievement. I am proud that we have expanded Clinton Hall from one to five locations with a seasonal rooftop opening this summer and that Slate is gearing up for its 20th anniversary in 2020. It makes me very happy to know that we enable people to create lifelong memories at Slate and Clinton Hall. Whether it’s by meeting a spouse during a night out or by sharing milestones at events like bar/bat mitzvahs. I love the relationships we have built over the years, not just with our customers, but also our bartenders, cooks, builders, and servers. Seeing the familiar faces when you walk through the door is priceless.

What is special about Clinton Hall’s new Gigawatt IPA can with Bronx Brewery? Our new Gigawatt IPA took months and months to create. It was a collaboration between our entire team and Bronx Brewery. It is a true labor of love. We brewed the first batch ourselves and are very proud to be the first independently run restaurant in New York City serving our very own canned beer.

Where do you see the company in 5 years? I am working on expanding both brands. I would love to see Slate and Clinton Hall in Boston, Miami and L.A. theluregroup.com

D’USSE The Culture of Spirits By W. A. Muller Cognac is a major staple in the culture of spirits. Originating back in the 16th century, from French connoisseurs all the way to the top hip-hop artists, cognac will never go out of style. One of cognac’s finest, D’USSÉ, is a new bold expression that dares the palate like never before. Born in the cellars of the Chateau de Cognac – a home with a 200-year legacy of creating some of the world’s finest Cognacs – D’USSÉ VSOP is the perfectly balanced blend of selected Cognacs aged at least 4 ½ years in French oak barrels in the Chateau’s unique dry and humid cellars. These natural aging environments are a key factor in delivering the distinctive bold, full-bodied and pleasantly smooth taste of D’USSÉ. The humid cellars give D’USSÉ its distinguished smoothness and roundness, while the dry cellars deliver intense aromas and spicy and woody notes. On the nose, D’USSÉ VSOP starts with a bouquet of powerful aromas rich in woody notes that are then backed by touches of cinnamon and floral notes. On the palate, D’USSÉ VSOP gives a pleasantly intense “bite”, with hints of spices, almond and cinnamon. Then, unexpectedly, a distinctively smooth finish takes over, delivering subtle accents of honey and dried fruits. With rich flavor notes of ripe blackberry and apricot, layered with hints of dark chocolate and walnut, D’USSÉ XO is in a lane of its own. On the rocks or straight up, D’USSÉ XO is known for its unparalleled aromas and complex taste. Being a distinctive spirit and a cultural icon, D’USSÉ XO has garnered the appeal of esteemed tastemakers worldwide. D’USSÉ XO is a masterful blend by the world’s most senior Maître de Chai, Michel Casavecchia. At a royal castle that dates back to the tenth century, the Chateau is also home to some long-established cognacs, but what makes D’USSÉ so different from the competition is its versatility. The exceptional design of both the D’USSÉ VSOP and XO Cognac bottles is inspired by the liquid it contains. It is classic, modern and a statement wherever it rests. Embodying luxury, sophistication and taste, D’USSÉ is crafted to ensure the utmost complexity and depth. The bottle has heritage-minded origins that cognac enthusiasts and new supporters of the brand would enjoy. On the bottle, a visceral representation of the source known simply by the double-barred cross, Le Croix de Lorraine (The Cross of Lorraine). This crest historically signifies French patriotism and the Free French Forces during World War II. This cross particularly conveys a theme of “courage, honor, and perseverance”—a fitting trifecta given the story behind the liquid. The finest of cognacs come with time. There must be time to age the eau-de-vie long enough to achieve complexity, and also time to let them mature together once the final blend is made. D’USSÉ’s goal with its Cognac is to deliver rich flavor culminating in an exceptionally balanced finish. Made from meticulously hand-selected eau-de-vie, D’USSÉ has earned its place as the pinnacle of the ultra-premium spirits category. Prices vary depending on the region, but D’USSÉ VSOP is valued between $49.99 $54.99 and D’USSÉ XO is $199 - $229. dusse.com

STREAMSONG RESORT A Luxury Golf Resort Like No Other By Mosaka Williamson

D

riving up to Streamsong you will surely be taken back by this massive secluded modern edifice nestled in Bowling Green Florida. A unique and picturesque landscape, a luxury remote golf paradise, a land with inherent beauty that creates an unparalleled luxury resort; are some of the ways the Streamsong Resort has been described. Expert architects Tom Doak of Renaissance Golf Design, Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw of Coore & Crenshaw, and Gil Hanse of Hanse Golf Course Design collectively created what are considered to be three of the top 200 golf courses in 2019, Streamsong Red (#14), Streamsong Black (#15) and Streamsong Blue (#19) by Golfweek. And, Streamsong has become a hot course for celebrity bros, father and son outings, and many women a demographic that is growing in the golf community. Whatever you are looking for there are numerous existing and customizable packages. When you are golfing at Streamsong you literally feel like you are in the middle of nowhere, and the nature surrounding the resort makes you feel like you are anywhere but Florida. A lot of the resort’s uniqueness is attributed to the fact that Streamsong is the former site of a phosphate mine. The Mosaic Company, the company

106 | resident.com

who brought Streamsong to life, touts itself as the world’s leading producer and marketer of phosphate-based crop nutrients—and is founded on a commitment to its surrounding resources. The Lodge features 216 guestrooms, a state of the art fitness center, superb restaurants, a pool, and a rooftop lounge with stunning sunset views. Additionally, Streamsong offers sporting clay shooting, bass fishing, archery, hiking, and bird watching. The spa is a destination all on its own, you are greeted by friendly and professional therapists who walk you into a room with several grottos of heated water and a cold plunge. The spa menu is extensive and, a relaxation treatment is necessary for both men and woman. Especially, after a day of intense physical activity. I had a chance to sit down with Jim Bullock, the Director of Sales & Marketing to learn more about the golf resort: How did the developers decide that this former mining site would be a great location for a golf course? The visionary behind the project grew up around golf, playing many elite courses, and upon surveying the land for potential reclamation, realized the topography and sand

base were unique and unexpected. The sense of tranquility and isolation available at the site was the inspiration to create the destination golf experience at Streamsong. It was thoughtfully and intentionally created to preserve the story of the land and honor the natural surroundings. What was the land used to create Streamsong like before the project was started? Very similar to what you see today – this is intentional. What contributed to Streamsong’s success? Far from the concrete, crowds, and chaos that cover much of central Florida, Streamsong’s success is linked to a variety of interrelated attributes all of which have one thing in common –authenticity and originality. From the one-of-akind modern architecture of the lakeside lodge and custom accents throughout, to the rich and rare confluence of amenities facilities and services not found together anywhere else in Florida — including a grotto-style spa, sporting clays, guided bass fishing, archery, four fine and casual restaurants and, of course, three internationally acclaimed golf courses that envelop the resort where the tradition of the game is honored by walking with caddies.

What differentiates Streamsong from other golf courses in Florida? Simply put, everything — there is nowhere else in Florida like Streamsong Resort. It is the only place in the world to experience four world-renowned golf course architects’ three internationally acclaimed links-style courses. A true bucket list golf experience, Streamsong Blue, Streamsong Red, and Streamsong Black celebrate the legacy of traditional Scottish links. Undulating fairways navigating through wild grasses and deep-water ponds, huge bunkers rolling from towering sand dunes and deep greenside pot bunkers define the unexpected experience of playing golf at Streamsong. Streamsong is home to Florida’s highest rated golf collection. Last year the PGA launched a campaign to attract more women to golf, how is Streamsong reaching this demographic? Streamsong Resort has seen an increase in female golfers and guests visiting the resort and are confident the trend will continue. All travelers, but even more women, are seeking authenticity, intention, and enrichment; Streamsong encourages guests to explore and experience in an awe-inspiring, distraction-free setting, with packages that incorporate all the resort has to offer both on and off the courses. Most of our golfers - male and female - choose to relax post-round at the grotto-style spa or infinity pool with cabanas. Multiple restaurants offer casual to fine dining options without ever needing to leave the resort grounds, including a rooftop bar with striking 360-degree views. And for the more outdoorsy traveler or curious adventurer, they can choose to experience our guided bass fishing, archery, and sporting clays. Are there any plans to grow Streamsong? Streamsong resides on 16,000 acres and at this time only 1/3 of the land is being used. While there are no expansion plans currently being discussed, our significant success in just six short years leaves the door open for future growth opportunities. Streamsong’s owners have an admiration and respect for the classic golf courses and the “Golden Age of Architecture” which is what makes the resort what it is. The sweeping hills, dramatic dunes, lovely lakes, hidden but very present wildlife, and vast greenery make the resort one of many golfers’ must go to courses in the world. One thing is certain Streamsong offers a golfing experience like none other.

JOE LEE Yankee Driver By John Meyer & Rick Marks

I

n life one is either a spectator or a participant. Joe Lee would never be characterized as the former primarily because he lives life with a passion. Certainly sports accounts for a lot of that relish. Joe loves athletes – the two-legged ones and those with four legs.

for the team to bring their batboys to an away game. He recalls faxing his homework assignments to Fordham Prep from Fulton county stadium.

Because of his dad, Joe was always a Yankee fan. But unlike most Yankee fans who get their fix on TV or going to occasional games, Joe took it a step further using some of his connections to become a batboy for the Bronx Bombers twenty-four years ago and hauling lumber for the likes of Mattingly, Jeter and Posada. He did this while also attending school, doing his homework. Unlike most kids his age rather than bagging groceries after school Mr. Lee commuted from Yonkers to Yankee Stadium nights and weekends.

That started him to a career as a clubhouse assistant for the New York Yankees for the past two decades. “Baseball is such a long season,” Joe reflected, “and to be a part of something that the 25 players work so hard for is amazing and never gets old. It’s a thrill to know that you helped them as much as you could off the field so that they can take care of their business on the road and in the Stadium.” While Joe has worked for the Yankees, something was missing. He never played for the Yankees. He was chomping at the bit to participate athletically. Thanks to his dad’s interest in harness racing both as a champion of the sport and an owner in some of the horses, Joe found his calling.

Joe had the honor of being the batboy and the field when the Yankees reclaimed the world title over the Braves in Atlanta. It was unusual and special

He wanted to be a harness driver. He found a mentor, Buzzy Sholty, a leading trainer who comes from a family whose life has been spent with the

breed including Hall of Fame driver George Sholty. Joe made a winning decision. He is a leading amateur harness driver in these parts (Meadowlands in New Jersey, Yonkers Raceway at Empire City and the venerable Monticello Raceway in the Catskills) having chalked up many wins in the past half-decade with the past two years among his best. In 2017, Joe was named National Amateur Driver of the Year by the United States Harness Writers Association. He considers himself a patient driver who models himself after top North American driver Brian Sears. Brian drives one and knows how to keep the bit in their mouth. He can keep them going forward and has them positioned well in the race. His life’s philosophy comes from a Yankee ethos that has served him well both on the track and in the dugout, “Stay humble and always remember there is someone behind you that can take your place.”

CARLATheMCDONALD Salonniere By Bennett Marcus

E

ven in our information-packed world, Carla McDonald found a niche and filled it with Salonniere, her online magazine dedicated to the world of parties and celebrating those who do it best. Her annual “Salonniere 100” list is a who’s who of America’s top hosts – the 100 people who host parties with grace, style and purpose. “We always talk about parties with a purpose, and that’s what matters to us, that these are people who are leveraging the power of parties to do good in their communities,” McDonald says. A salonniere is a party host, a term coined in France for people who gathered the leading thinkers of the day for “salons.” “I was inspired by The Salonnieres of the 17th and 18th Century in France when they did this so well and they exerted tremendous influence in their communities,” says McDonald, citing the birth of the French Revolution as one example of the fruit of exchanging ideas in such a way. The Salonniere 100 The Salonniere is online, but it celebrates what is decidedly offline. McDonald would see conversations taking place on Facebook, and realize they ought

to be happening in person. “I thought: is there a danger of losing that sort of connection by falling back on social media for this?” Her instinct was correct; she started the site in 2013, and it has been very successful in terms of connecting people. The Salonniere 100 was devised to honor people who create great parties that connect interesting personalities. “These are people who I felt were doing an important service in their communities, but their stories weren’t being told, the hard work, generosity of time and treasure that they were giving to bring people together in their community to advance ideas.” Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball The site’s content varies, you’ll find anything from features on party ideas and seasonal cocktails to interviews with experts to profiles of famous parties in history, like Truman Capote’s legendary Black and White Ball. The reason for this is not just to explore the history of these important events, McDonald notes, but to inspire parties today. “People love to do black-and-white themed parties,” she says. The key to parties is the guests you are bringing together. “That is what people

remember, not the food you serve or if your soufflé falls flat.” George Clooney to President Obama McDonald spent 15 years in marketing and public relations in New York, then joined a tech startup in Dallas, and later formed her own successful branding firm in Austin, where she currently resides with her husband and two daughters. Her PR background involved hosting major events, from product launches to VIP cocktail parties. “I’d seen firsthand the power of parties to connect people, advance ideas, promote an agenda, whatever it might be that the host is looking to do,” she says, and The Salonniere was born. While going to parties for work, McDonald has met George Clooney, Princess Caroline of Monaco, Graham Nash and the late operatic legend Luciano Pavarotti over the years. “It’s amazing to me that I’ve met Madeline Albright, and I’ve met President Obama and Michelle Obama. It’s such a gift to have had the chance to have a real conversation with all of them.” thesalonniere.com

LEESA ROWLAND Actress, Philanthropist, Animal Rights Activist and Author By Lillian Langtry

M

ost acclaimed actors have interesting backgrounds, but few are as unique and wide-ranging as cult film star and philanthropist Leesa Rowland. The daughter of an artist and college professor, Leesa grew up in Austin, Texas where she studied broadcast journalism and later became a classically trained actress at the world-renowned Steller Adler Studio in Los Angeles. Shortly after graduation, she quickly gained a following after being cast as Victoria in Troma Entertainment’s 1992 cult film classic, Class of Nuke ‘Em High Parts 2 and 3 and appearing in the sequel Return To Nuke ‘Em High, which aired on The Starz Network in 2013. In 1994 she acted in Troma’s television USA Network series Troma’s Edge along with Lloyd Kaufman and Debbie Rochon. Then, in 2012, she co-starred in Travis Campbell’s Slaughter Daughter as Phyllis Adjani, an eccentric mother who drives her daughter

to insanity. Not only did the film win the award for best feature at Orlando’s 7th Annual Freak Show Film Festival that same year, it led to a co-starring role in the critically acclaimed web series Two City Girls opposite fellow Troma actress Lisa Gaye, as well as appearances on the Oxygen reality series Jersey Couture in 2012. Beyond her extensive career and credits as a film and television actress, Leesa is the author of the best-selling self-help/motivational book Discovering the It Factor within You: Developing Your Charismatic Personality, which was published in 2015. She is also well-known for her work as a philanthropist and animal rights activist. A vegan dedicated to healthy eating, she has been active with the national non-profit organization Last Chance for Animals since 1989 and is the president of the New York non-profit group Animal Ashram, which she founded in 2013.

As she continues to develop her work as a philanthropist and involvement with these and other charities while exploring new dramatic roles and writing an as-yet titled sequel to Discovering the It Factor, Leesa recently began adding something else exciting to her sizzle reel: comedienne. A lifelong sitcom fan, she has been taking comedy classes with Richard Kline—the actor best known as Larry on the late1970s classic Three’s Company co-starring John Ritter, Suzanne Sommers and Don Knotts, which originally ran on ABC from 1977 to 1984—in Los Angeles. She has also been studying improv and sketch comedy in New York at the famed Upright Citizen’s Brigade whose alumni include Amy Poehler, Horatio Sands, Matt Besser, Matt Walsh and Ian McKay. leesarowland.net

DOMINGO ZAPATA Artist & Philanthropist By Bennett Marcus Charity, public works Domingo Zapata, the Spanish-born artist who has studios in NYC and the Hamptons wants to share more of his art with the world. “The storm has passed, and now I can concentrate and create monumental works for more people to enjoy, not only the rich and famous. I want to do more murals, public works, sculptures and a lot of charity work. I want to give back through this gift that I have, and be able to help others,” he says. In addition to his work with Pope Francis’ arts education charity Scholas Occurrentes, Zapata supports the Global Gift Foundation, PETA, ASCPA, and Make a Wish Foundation. One notable public work is his mural in the lobby of One World Trade Center. Doing murals, he says, allows him to travel to different places; he just completed one of blue horses in Bahrain for the royal family, and next heads to the UK to work on another. “It keeps me in a different place for a while and I can experience different cultures and that’s always inspiring and important to me.” Collaborations with fashion world Zapata has also found a home in the fashion world. The designer Stacey Bendet of label Alice + Olivia tapped him for a capsule collection to benefit the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA.) “It was inspired by my paintings and we had a lot of fun.” After that came a line of shoes with Italian brand Superga, and then the CFDA offered to put him on the official calendar for New York Fashion Week, so he jumped at the chance, creating installations. The pieces are not for sale, these are art shows in the form of a fashion show. For the first one, he painted garments and the models’ bodies with “express yourself” messages. It was inspired by his 11-year-old daughter, who is transgender. “She’s a beautiful girl, and I always

supported her to be whoever she wants to be,” he says. “I think it’s a shame when you see that people have not been able to do this, through repression.” Political science in London Zapata has always painted, but took a more pragmatic route when starting out, studying political science in London and at American University, in D.C., followed by a marketing job on Wall Street. It was

Pope Francis Domingo Zapata was nervous when he first met Pope Francis, who recently appointed him an ambassador for Scholas Occurrentes, an organization that promotes arts education. “Relax, now I’ll paint on you,” the Pontiff told him after the swearing in, and proceeded to paint a cross, a bird, and his signature on Zapata’s blue suit. Pope Francis repeated the cross and bird motif on a canvas on which Zapata and fellow artist Mr. Brainwash also worked. The painting, with a theme of immigration, will be auctioned off to benefit Scholas Occurrentes. dzapata.com Zapata had painted in the Pope’s presence once before, when he created a work that sold for $500,000 to benefit the organization. Francis was thankful – and enjoyed the experience – and invited him back to the Vatican for the joint art session. “I think it’s beautiful we have a Pope that promotes art in education,” he said. “It’s extremely important, and I am proud to be an ambassador of this and to be able to help.” Zapata also donated other works to help raise funds for the organization.

there that an influential friend saw some of Zapata’s paintings in his office, and arranged for some collectors to see his work, changing his life. “I never thought I would have a chance at becoming an artist,” he says. “One day I had an opportunity to be able to do what I wanted to do with my life, and I took it and I never looked back.”

This type of charitable collaboration is typical of Zapata’s work at this point in his career of more than 20 years. Inspired by things around him during different phases of his life – the colors and flora of his childhood home, Mallorca; downtown New York’s modern art and graffiti; modern technology; the women portrayed in Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, which he has tattooed on his arm, and the opulence that goes with fame – are just a few influences on his work as his star has risen over the years.

ART

LEANDRO ANTOLÍ Spain’s Modern Marvel

By w. a. muller Photography by Manuel Bonilla

Tell us how you got into art. I introduced myself to art at an early age in my adolescence and in a self-taught way. Each of us enters into it in a different way and in my case it was not through painting but by other artistic disciplines: writing, especially reading poetry, specifically the twentieth-century Spanish poetry of Lorca, Miguel Hernández, Claudio Rodríguez, Ángel González ... all this at the age of 15 years. Then I became interested in another type of poetry, Anglo-Saxon, of the mid-nineteenth century ... all this then led me to explore other types of art; movies, novels, music .... until I found my niche in the visual arts. My attraction to this art form was encouraged by my continuous visits to exhibitions, and my interest in the life and work of the great artists of the past (Caravaggio, Leonardo ...) and the 20th. century (Modigliani, Kandinsky, Picasso, Warhol ...).

130 | resident.com

Where did you study? I began studying art at home between the ages of 12 to 16, teaching myself to draw by copying master works, first pencil, then oil, working on the street or in museums. Later I studied for 5 years at the School of Architecture of Madrid and later at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Complutense University of Madrid where I graduated from. It is there where I learned all the artistic techniques and entered the field of art galleries and exhibitions for the first time. Later I did many workshops together with Pablo Palazuelo, Genovés, Carmen Calvo ... and workshops on topics related to the art of the 21st century, such as those related to ecology, Cyborgs, bioart and interventions in urban spaces.

Between 1995 and 2005 I began working in the art form of engraving; it was during this time that I created a magazine called “Engraving and Edition”. In addition, my position as professor of drawing, painting and watercolor at the House of Culture of my town, San Lorenzo del Escorial inspired me to continue to move forward with my students in the discovery and development of my artistic pursuits today. What are your inspirations? My main inspiration comes from two sources: nature and poetry. Nature offers me a world full of shapes, colors and images in the daily walks that for years I have systematically made in the mountains of Guadarrama

In some of my works, as I flee from concrete motives, I attempt to suggest certain places of the soul, certain thoughts through paint stains, shapes, volumn, which can then be transmitted to the one who contemplates the work. Who are your clients? Have you done many art shows? I have had one-man shows every one or two years in different galleries and in diferent art spaces. I have also participated in group exhibitions two or three times a year in galleries in Madrid such as one called Jacomart, or Inés Barrenechea, and in different exhibition rooms of the Community of Madrid. My clients are potentially those who have been presenting and acquiring my work through the different exhibitions, and I have a certain fixed clientel. On the other hand, they are collectors of the galleries themselves, where I exhibit in both on-site galleries and galleries on the web. What is your next series? Which series are you the most proud of ? The series I am continuing on at the moment is called “The Walls”, based on a previous work that I did called “Tear Off”, in which I extracted paint directly from the walls of old buildings, those that had accumulated layers of paint

throughout the years. I then made an engraving, and after this engraving, I did what is called in restoration a “strip off”, which then I presented on a frame. Today what I do is related to this process; I make the wall on paper or canvas, using acrylics and / or watercolors, dyes .... I seek to create that same feeling that was created from the work on the walls of the old buildings. Which artists inspire you the most? The artists who have inspired me are not only painters but musicians, poets, dancers. In the visual arts, I have been inspired by Bill Viola, who works on video installations, also by Gerhard Richter, Marina Abramovic, Frank Stella ... who, even though they are artists with different ways of working, all agree on a lyrical and social vision of art. Not all of them are of my style, but all of them have been, for one reason or another, accompanying me during my own artistic process. leandroantoli.com saatchiart.com/leandro-antoli artspace.com/artist/leandro-antoli

that surround my town; a world that arises through keeping my mind open, letting ideas and inner images develop. From these walks suggestive ideas for possible infinite themes in my work have arisen. There are other sources of inspiration for me, but one in particular remains with me since I was young; the reading of poetry, even the writing of poetry that I do together with my daily painting. What form of painting would you say your art is? In recent times, my work has evolved towards abstraction, which in Spain is called “lyrical abstraction”. In my work figurative elements have been disappearing first, and then they have remained as small symbolic graphics.

ART

MARISU SOLÍS Spain’s Shining Star

By w. a. muller Photography by Manuel Bonilla

Tell us how you got into art. From a very early age I loved to draw and was always supported in this. My mother’s mother was an artist in Cuba and at home we had many art books that I perused hungrily.

In 1977 I entered the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando where I completed my studies in painting in 1982 and my graduate work with the Catedrático de Paisaje Martínez Díaz in 1983. In 1984 I finished my doctorate there.

So, with my love of drawing and my interest in nature and art it was a foregone conclusion that I would study Fine Arts.

What are your inspirations? I am deeply touched by the countryside, by nature, with its seasons and perfumes, but also the city, with its vertigo, bold colors, its people, all different and unique. And, of course, travel, the diversity of places, landscapes, people.

Later, in Madrid, I became part of a circle of artist friends, shared workshop space with them, so my studies flowed easily into a vocation to pursue a life as an artist. Where did you study? In my last years at school in Aviles I took drawing classes with a respected professor, Victor Santarua. On finishing high school, I went to Madrid to prepare for the entrance exam to the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. I took classes in both the Academy of Amadeo Roca and Francisco Merallo and the Cátedra de Pintura Libre de la Escuela de BBAA, from 1975 to 1977.

132 | resident.com

As well as the exterior world I constantly try to remain in touch with my inner world, searching for new ways of expression that are uniquely personal. In my painting and sculpture there is a certain amount of serendipity, images that spring into being conceptually and concretely without passing through a thinking process or tentative sketches, a process of improvisation weaving lines and symbols, layers of color and textures of wood and oxidized metals.

What form of painting and sculpture would you say your art is? In my painting I see clear signs of an expressionist tension where mere description loses importance in the overall balance of the painting, limited to figurative traces in a predominately informal context. The piece then exists somewhere in the flux between recognizable images and abstractions. I try not to focus on what I am doing, or want to do, allowing myself to flow, through color, shape, sensory experiences and visual impressions. My sculptures, as you can see from the titles of my last two shows, Encounters: Another Look, and Intersections: Wood, Iron, Shapes, are small minimalist works stressing intimate poetic content. Each piece is the result of the meeting of material, place and moment. Creative chance is crucial to this process: a piece of wood takes on a shape, a piece of wire moves in a certain way... Who are your clients? Have you done many art shows? Most of my clients are private collectors, although I have some corporate and civic clients like the Banco de España and the Bienal Ciudad de Oviedo. I have done both group and individual shows in

private galleries like EGAM in Madrid, MAR in Alicante and Nogal and CAICOYA in Oviedo, and community galleries like Casas de Cultura of San Lorenzo del Escorial, Luanco and the Centro Cultural Valley in Asturias. I also sell directly from my studio and online galleries like saatchiart. com, artspace.com, singulart.com, or artmajeur. com. What is your next series? Which series are you the most proud of ? I am working on a series titled “Hojarasca” (Fallen leaves) in which shape and form relegate color to a secondary place, working with acrylic paints both on linen canvas and paper. In the pieces on paper the blocks of color are substituted by colored tissue paper which gives a greater plasticity. For me what most stands out are the series of landscapes and my sculptures. Before showing them I called my sculptures Toys. They are made from driftwood, found objects, and bits of oxidized metal found in the rural countryside. The places of discovery where I find these objects are very special to me, as is the order in which they are found. It’s a minimalist, lyrical, playful process where luck and optimism are always present. The different landscape series have evolved from a very naturalistic style to almost complete abstraction. In the balance between representational and abstract, over a base of painting very thought out and elaborated, arise elements of simple landscapes but with great strength and ability to evoke fields, fences, houses and trees that are a part of the environment that inspires the pieces. Which artist inspire you the most? When I was young and interested in pure colors, I discovered the FAUVES, like Jawlensky and Matisse, among others. During my career my sense of color has alternated between pure colors and colors tempered predominately with the range of grays. In Madrid I had easy, constant access to great museums and wonderful temporary expositions of great painters like Cezanne, Modigliani, Bonnard and Kansinsky. Years later, more interested in abstract art, I was impressed by Esteban Vicente and should mention Alechinsky. Lastly, the American expressionists: Joan Mitchell, De Kooning, Motherwell, Kline… Julio Gonzalez and Chillida were important influences on my sculpture. marisu-solis.com saatchiart.com/marisusolis artspace.com/artist/marisu-solis
