A SEASON FOR THANKS
With the advent of November, we are reminded to give thanks for everything that’s been given to us. So often we take things for grantedfriendships, health, marriage, and the wealth of opportunities from living in New York City. For our November cover story we featured the ultimate shark himself, Kevin O’Leary, aka Mr. Wonderful on Shark Tank. His larger than life personality is matched by his straightforward, cut to the chase, no nonsense demeanor that earned him his title. A serial entrepreneur by nature, smart as a whip with many life lessons to bestow onto others, Kevin
O’Leary shares his advice on where he’s investing, secrets to a lasting marriage, what he looks for in Shark Tank potentials, and his latest projects including teaching.
de Desir beauty spread shot by Evan Guttman that highlighted stunning colored jewels and red carpet ready looks that captivate and have us yearn for more.
One of the favorite things I love about fall is rocking the autumnal palette of this season’s best fashion. We tapped uber stylist Violetta Malakhova who created our Falling for Fall fashion editorial with stunning looks that showcase the best of the season.
As always fall getaways and escapes are on our mind and this month we traveled the world to Shanghai, Hawaii, and the DR. Although thanksgiving is only once a year, we have plenty to be thankful for, and should celebrate thanks every day of the year.
Fall is also the season for the charity gala circuit, which was the inspiration for our Objets

THE ULTIMATE ANNUAL MOGUL FEST At the Exclusive 1640 Society Wealth Forum By Hillary Latos
F
amily patriarch titans, philanthropists, and billionaires converged for the annual private meeting of the 1640 Society Family Office Wealth Forum in August. The 1640 Society annual private meeting is an exclusive invitation-only event that brings together leading family members, family offices, and wealthy leaders from around the globe for a closed-door private discussion about issues affecting the global elite and top one percent. The meeting was held at a private home in Southampton’s, covering relevant topics such as impact investing, asset allocation, wealth preservation philanthropy, cyber security, blockchain, tech investing, as well as how to create family harmony, values & legacy. Families who attended came from countries like Asia, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, UAE, and Latin America, as well as many from summer vacation yachts anchored in Europe. The audience for the meeting consisted of leading families, including the Royal family members from
18 | resident.com
Europe and the Middle East, self-made entrepreneurs, next-generation heirs, chief investment officers, and CEO’s of some of the largest companies in the world. According to one of the attendee’s, 65 individuals with a net worth over a billion, were present. Security was tight throughout the conference, with checkpoints at every entrance to the residence and anonymous security guards in step with some of the families. The private discussions at the forum were fascinating, ranging from private island purchases to getaway homes in New Zealand and Switzerland, to family kidnappings and multi-million dollar ransoms. Other topics included new types of security protocols, family governance, co-investing with other families, philanthropy, and how to make the world better. Of course, families who recently acquired new sports teams in football, hockey, and soccer, compared notes on fixtures, statistics, and strategy. Even one of the hedge fund managers mentioned that one
of the families invested $50 million in his fund after he spoke at the forum and another family mentioned they were co-investing with another multi-millionaire on a large project. The official panel discussions were just as interesting, with Tim Draper and Mike Novogratz, both called the Forest Gumps of cryptocurrency, speaking on their early investments in bitcoin & blockchain. It was the first time these leaders of the industry had met. The 1640 Society is known for bringing influential families with synergies together to form unique bonds that can last a lifetime. Another exceptional panel merged four billionaires from across the globe to discuss direct investing with Armenian business leader Ruben Vardanyan, Kevin O’Leary, known as Mr Wonderful on Shark Tank, after selling his company to Mattel for $4.2 billion, philanthropist and business tycoon Michael Loeb, and self-made Italian billionaire Sandro Salsano.
Another fascinating guest was Carrie Morgridge, who spoke on the philanthropy panel. Her credentials in philanthropy include being the third family to sign the Giving Pledge which was started by Bill and Melinda Gates. She spoke on the philanthropy panel moderated by Stephen Kennedy Smith with the CEO of the Al Nahyan Private Office representing the Royal Family of Abu Dhabi who commented that the UAE is giving 3% of their GDP for social entrepreneurs who help the world. A Greek shipping billionaire spoke on saving the world with environmentally friendly green ships. Making the planet a better place, living lives that make a difference, saving the world, and investing with impact were the common themes discussed. After the dynamic and interesting panels had subsided, the luncheon provided a nice change of pace with pop singer Elle Winter performing some of her hit songs. During cocktail hour there was another performance by pop singer Imani Scott, who had recently finished her tour with Wyclef Jean. While the performances were underway, the families were able to relax, network, and casually chat about authentic tailor-made travel experiences by Audley Travel. The CEO of Audemars Piguet attended and Piguet had a watchmaker show families the details that go into making quality timepieces. NetJets had the latest Bombardier Challenger 350 parked outside the home and guests used the plane as a meeting spot or place to take board calls in private. With some of the most influential families in the Hamptons attending, not all high net worth families who applied to the forum got admittance. The 1640 Society runs the forum like a country club and so there is a rigorous approval process, with only 200 families getting approved to join on an annual basis. Families who got past the ultimate velvet rope included leading names like the Pitcairns, Kennedy’s, Bush, Firestone’s, Ford’s, Rockefeller’s, Bronfman’s, Kettering, Getty’s, Kluge, Pritzker’s, Johnson’s, Heinz, Hunt’s, Musk (co-founder of PayPal), along with international magnets like the Mittal family from India and the Pears families from Europe. The Westhampton airport had over 40 private jets fly in just for the exclusive and highly anticipated forum. The next forum will be held in Miami on Monday, December 3rd. Details can be found at www.1640society.com if you are fortunate enough to secure an invitation. 1640society.com

AX THE PINK TAX
An Initiative Spearheaded by European Wax Center By Hillary Latos

y the time a woman is 30 years old, she has paid $40K more for the same basic personal care items and services than a man. That is about $1,351* per year. This extra amount of money women pay for everyday products and services is known as the “Pink Tax.” On Wednesday, October 17th, Sherry Baker, President of Marketing and Product Development of European Wax Center, explained to guests at an #AxThePinkTax breakfast and discussion held at The Fashion Institute of Technology, that 2018 was a momentous year for European Wax Center with the launch of its #AxThePinkTax campaign, which was created to raise awareness and education about this issue and in turn, ignite change to help level the playing field for women. In attendance at the breakfast, were Ladies Get Paid Founder Claire Wasserman, Chairwoman & Co-Founder of Batallure Beauty Robin Burns-McNeill, Co-Founder of Ash & Ames Jewelry Amy Nobile,

in items marketed to women; on average, products for females cost 7% more. The study also cites that women pay more for everyday essentials, such as body wash and conditioner, adding up to a whopping $1,351 per year (according to a 1994 study). *Adjusted for inflation (from 1994 to 2018), that amounts to $2,248.65 in 2018, or roughly $182,140 in a women’s lifetime, if that average remained the same over 50 years.
Following the breakfast and the Pink Tax discussion, Dr. Valerie Steele, Director and Chief Curator of The Museum at FIT, hosted guests on a private tour of the new FIT exhibition PINK: The History of a Punk, Pretty Powerful Color.
In addition to offering scholarships at FIT, European Wax Center supports other organizations to empower women with unapologetic confidence. The brand partners with Girls in Tech for various programs that help teach women entrepreneurial and tech skills and also sponsors scholarships through Beauty Changes Lives to provide viable career options for many within the beauty industry.

TIPS FOR BEAUTIFUL WINTER HAIR By Kenza Salahdine
W
ith a change in the seasons, how do you get the best hair for the holidays ? It starts with a flawless haircut while keeping the frizz at bay. Here we spoke to experts in the field. Rossano Ferretti, the most expensive hair stylist in the world, developed his famous and innovative Method Haircut, that is sought after by A-List celebrities and royalty, such as Kate Middleton, Jennifer Lawrence, and Resse Witherspoon, who trust their prized locks in his capable hands. Here Rossano discusses how a perfect haircut is like a work of art and done correctly can enhance and bring out a client’s inner beauty. What defines The Method haircut? The Invisible Haircut is based on the concept of the hair’s natural fall and movement. It gives hairdressers a way to highlight each client’s unique beauty, since each cut is designed to the particular characteristics of each woman’s hair and personality. This is the heart of the Rossano Ferretti Method. I

but still haven’t found THE solution, we recommend you to try the Cezanne treatment at Butterfly Salon.
What are some of the best trends you saw over fashion week? A: We have seen fashion shows this past week that involved brands such as Nike and Tommy Hilfiger. One of the most heart-warming and interesting in my opinion was The Runway of Dreams Foundation which focused on making fashion brands also adaptable for disabled people. Fashion evolves but it is important that people don’t forget to be inclusive. Everyone is and should feel important. Personally, it was such a humbling and motivating experience to see change in the fashion industry and I am proud to say some of my team in NYC participated in this event.
Butterfly Salon, located in the Flatiron neighborhood in New York City, was founded by Kattia Solano, 17 years ago. It is one of the most popular luxury salons of the city staffed with talented stylists and colorists who will find the best treatment process for your hair type.
rossanoferretti.com We all want natural and voluminous hair but we also want fight frizz and static in the winter. If you have already tried several treatments, different haircuts and even sleeping with a satin pillowcase
To transform frizzy hair to smooth locks invest in a Keratin treatment. The Cezanne treatment works on all hair types and last for months. Their next generation smoothing formula is scentless without harmful ingredients. This treatment will eliminate the frizz with a silky, smooth effect but it’s purpose is not to create stick straight hair. It will revitalize your hair to make it stronger, healthier and easier to maintain on a daily basis with a natural look.

How to Rock the Best Fall Trends By Violetta Malakhova Photographed By olga yavtushenko Hair By Timur Katz

rends or your own style? You can do both! We asked a journalist and fashion consultant Violetta Malakhova how the hottest trends of the recent NYFW can complement your identity. During the past 7 years Violetta had a chance to interview the biggest industry moguls such as Alber Elbaz, Viktor&Rolf’s duo, Proenza Schouler creative directors, Jean-Claude Jitrois, DSquared twins and many other world creatives. Her authorship is featured in Forbes, L’Officiel, Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan with a professional focus on Tel Aviv, Paris and New York. on the coolest fashion trends. “When you renew your wardrobe for everyday looks I always recommend two simple rules: feel yourself and “less is more”. Trends are just vectors to follow not an axiom for everyone. For example, hot thigh-high boots would look awesome on a 6’1’’ skinny woman but not the same for a petite woman. This season I paid attention to colors and patterns that would be suited for everyone’’. Animal Print “No need visit the Bronx zoo to see cheetahs, zebras and snakes — they will all be spotted on the streets of soho- will be the joke of the season.” How to wear: Again — feel yourself. If your bargaining chip is minimalism, just use printed shoes, bags, belts and gloves with monochrome outfits. Daring fashionistas can try total looks including same-print tights or mixing prints eg. cheetah dress with snake blazer. Seen at: Tom Ford, Adeam, Savage x Fenty, DVF Note: Please support animal rights and choose faux materials and textile prints. Neon Electric colors have a strong association with
acid raves of the 90s but the new season brings elegant and mature variations of this palette with the accent of yellow and fuchsia. How to wear: Use colorblocks —a pink suit goes well with a blue bag and green shoes. Keep the colors clean, with no prints. Beauty tools in neon shades are also very welcome. Seen at: Victoria Hayes, Tibi, Cushnie, Prabal Gurung, Jeremy Scott Note: If your skin tone is not visually compatible with this flamboyance, try to wear neon on the lower part of outfit — skirts, shorts, tights and pants. 90s Aesthetics Grunge, a fierce hip-hop scene, street gangs, and our romantic youth. Designers do not give up on this trend for many seasons. This time the limelight falls onto denim and oversized silhouettes. How to wear: Fearlessly. Keep using thin sunglasses, play with denim fabrics (yes, stone- and bleach-wash is back), high-waisted wide pants and big-shoulders jackets. Platform sneakers are also very good for channeling the Spice Girls era. Seen at: Bevza, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Monse, Proenza Schouler Note: Follow stylists Mel Ottenberg and Lotta Volkova on Instagram for the coolest references upon this theme.

f you’re looking for a laidback lifestyle with luxury, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida is for you – and no one does luxury better than Kim Martin-Fisher and Jennifer Martin Faulkner, Ponte Vedra’s mother-daughter real estate dream team.
Jacksonville’s top area for real estate. Since uniting their business just this year, Kim and her daughter Jennifer, who are Global Luxury agents with Coldwell Banker, are the top producers in the area in addition to being in the top one percent in the country.
From her early real estate days at her father’s construction company where she started a marketing division and revolutionized sales to becoming the top real estate agent in the Ponte Vedra luxury market to partnering with her daughter, Kim continues climbing to the top in
This upscale enclave featuring pristine beaches, outdoor activities and nationally recognized resorts has residents feeling like they’re on perpetual vacation – it’s no wonder so many people choose to call the area home, or at least their home away from home. Ponte Vedra Beach,

which is located in the wealthiest county in the state of Florida, is only six miles long and three miles wide on an island bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway – it doesn’t get any more exclusive than that! “We’re not your typical real estate agents,” said Kim. We think outside the box and do full whiteglove service, we go above and beyond. We’re really there for our customers before, during and after their move and become their family in Florida – we’ve become known as the go-to people for taking care of all their needs throughout the process.” This powerhouse duo which act as personal concierges for the elite, also do things differently when it comes to advertising their properties. They have syndicated ads and focus their media efforts and commercials on the properties rather than themselves. The pair currently represent the most luxurious homes in Ponte Vedra, including the highest priced oceanfront estate in the area at over $13 million – a small price to pay for a piece of paradise. Whether you’re looking for an oceanfront compound or a cottage by the beach, there is truly something for everyone in this private, luxurious town which exudes Southern charm and hospitality.
46 | resident.com
While some of their customers are looking for investment properties or places to grow into, Ponte Vedra is a very active community with young families and children. Many of their customers also have strong ties to Manhattan, and it’s not hard to see why! “If you compare us to South Florida, we’re inexpensive still and I think that’s why we have so many people from Manhattan coming here,” said Jennifer. “It’s a good time to buy, it’s affordable (for now!) it offers convenience and we don’t have all the traffic like Miami, this is much more relaxing.” The beachfront community is home to the historic Ponte Vedra Inn and Club, which has become an international destination for its sporting activities, gourmet dining options and world-renowned spa which also happens to be the region’s largest spa with over 30,000 square feet. Ponte Vedra is also the home of the PGA, making it a golfer’s paradise all year long, especially for those who like to play with a view of the ocean. The exclusive town is also recognized amongst tennis enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates perfect weather, scenic views and water sports. With so much to do in a relaxed setting, you’ll feel like you’re on a staycation
all day, everyday. Many high profile residents including sports stars, celebrities and finance executives continue to flock to this tight-knit community. It might not be long before the South Florida community starts moving to North Florida! “Almost all of our customers with Manhattan ties have to go for work or live in the city and come every weekend,” said ㅓJennifer. People are looking for a vacation house which still offers the same lavish amenities as their home in New York. You can be here in the same time than it takes to get to the Hamptons.” This top-producing agent also explained that “this year has seen a boom from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut due to the new tax laws. The area is home to many in the finance industry including those who work on Wall Street or run hedgefunds and have satellite offices in Ponte Vedra. A lot of families live and send their children to school here and fly back and forth several times a month or every weekend. Others wish to have a homestead property for the tax benefits.” Unlike other parts of Florida, Ponte Vedra offers a thriving community experience where people choose

to stay and raise families who continue to call the area home for generations. The weather makes it a perfect place for children to partake in outdoor sports and ㅓthe Ponte Vedra Clubs offer many kidfriendly programs including tennis throughout the year. The area also boasts some of the best schools in the state. While Ponte Vedra Beach features a lot of old homes which many people choose to update or renovate, the real estate duo have noticed a home design trend which New Yorkers are drawn to the most. “A lot of our homes look exactly like the Hamptons,” said Jennifer. “They have a traditional cedar shake exterior and transition to a coastal modern design inside. Homes are more modern than what we’ve seen in the past; it’s really appealing for the New Yorker who is looking for a cool, beachy vibe, but with all the high-end amenities like quartzite and Viking appliances you would expect in a luxury Manhattan apartment.”
The luxury resort town offers year-long fun in the sun with activities and water sports such as paddleboarding and kayaking. There are even several marinas closeby so you can dock your 80foot yacht. For the beach lover, the only problem you’ll have is deciding which beach to go to first! Atlantic Beach is eclectic and charming and features multi-million dollar homes while Jacksonville Beach and Neptune Beach are also great nearby destinations with each offering a different vibe. The charming town of St. Augustine is also just a short drive away from this luxurious piece of heaven. There are also plenty of charming boutique shopping options and fine dining destinations so you can relax after all those outdoor activities. From fine jewelry stores to the St. Johns Town Center, you’ll be able to get your retail therapy on all day long! The spot has also drawn many celebrity chefs, turning it into a culinary hub with everything from exclusive dining areas to more laidback waterfront restaurants. Matt Lauer’s former chef opened up his restaurant Doro in Atlantic Beach while Medure
is also a popular spot – from hip to haute, Jacksonville’s beaches have it all! With so many activities, resorts, beaches and Southern hospitality, the area continues to draw people looking to stay and play either part-time or all year round. In addition to Ponte Vedra’s most lavish properties, 32081 is a novelty residential community which encompasses nearly the entire zip code and has become the 3rd best selling community of homes in the nation, featuring properties ranging from the mid-300s to $2 million. There is definitely a house for anyone who wants to make this part of Florida their home. Whether you’re looking for a charming older home or new construction, Kim and Jennifer will not only find you the perfect place, they will be there for you throughout the process and beyond – after all, this family business makes you feel like part of the family. kmfandjmf.com

DDB FALL MARKET 2018 Luxury: Redefined & Redesigned By Elizabeth Darwen The Decoration & Design Building hosted the Fall Market 2018 in the heart of Manhattan’s Design District to discuss this season’s theme, Luxury: Redefined & Redesigned. Owner, Charles S. Cohen opened the two-day trade-only event with his perspective of the evolving definition of luxury resulting from the design headquarters’ carefully curated programming and discussion. The Fall Market 2018 saw an exponential growth in attendees, welcoming over 3,000 members of the trade, and a wealth of new programs including six Keynotes, 21 In-Showroom Programs, one Special Event, five Cocktail Receptions, 118 Open Houses and 14 NEW Experiential Events. Top editorial voices, leading industry trade organizations and dozens of design influencers convened for the DDB Fall Market

2018 to discuss the future of luxury, redefined and redesigned by interior design’s top to-the-trade companies. Semiannually, the design headquarters D&D Building dedicates its over 130 showrooms, representing over 3,000 leading manufacturers, to a relevant topic in design to incite industry-improving change. Positioning itself at the helm of design, and to fit the theme, The D&D Building’s Fall showrooms were decked in sophisticated décor and luxury furnishings which inspired intellectual discussion to redefine the luxury trade industry. Great comfort, opulent aesthetics, and a world of ideas, surrounding luxury living, were up for discussion between media gatekeepers, highly-esteemed design experts plus
luxury lifestyle managers, connoisseurs and innovators. The first keynote session Fancy That! The Shifting Definition of Living Fabulously, moderated by then Editor-in-Chief Sophie Donelson of House Beautiful brought together New York designers Anne Maxwell Foster and Suysel dePedro Cunningham of Tilton Fenwick, plus LA designer David Netto to discuss what is worth the luxury price tag at Duralee. The leading minds in design shared their unique views on how budgeting and ingenuity can deliver the same luxury quality at an even more desirable price. Contrary to what some may believe, living in the lap of luxury is not afforded sans budgeting. The Luxury Design Revolution was hosted by
Town & Country Editor-in-Chief Stellene Volandes with renowned designer Kelly Wearstler. Transporting guests 100 years back through the design history of Kravet Inc., this keynote session celebrated a century in the home design business. To better understand the future of design and how it is to be redefined, this discussion took a broad look at the history of legendary interior designers, that have propelled us forward. Closing the first day of keynote sessions, Creating and Conveying Luxury in the Retail, Hospitality and Restaurant Realms assembled an esteemed group led by Executive Editor Brittany Chevalier McIntyre of Luxe Interiors + Designs alongside designers Juan Montoya, Ryan Korban and Alicia Cannon at Warp & Weft. Eagerly contributing their experiences, creating and conveying luxury in the most extravagant lifestyle spaces, guests learned how these influential designers execute an overall concept on behalf of their clients. Effortlessly balancing a client’s brand identity, the designer’s impeccable vision and the most innovative, yet functional,
materials are paramount when developing luxury retail, hospitality and restaurant spaces. Immediately following the keynote session was a book signing of Ryan Korban’s newest book Interiors and Juan Montoya’s latest design book. Opening the second day, Tangible vs. Intangible Luxury welcomed media sponsor Financial Times “How To Spend It” and Global CEO Annastasia Seebohm of the luxury lifestyle management concierge and service company, quintessentially to lead a panel discussion joined by Founder Richard Lambertson of Lambertson Truex leather accessories, Owner Anthony Champalimaud of Troutbeck Hotel and Group Contract Director Carolyn Mitchell of Style Library in the brand’s showroom. Panelists discussed how possible it is that nostalgia or emotions from an experience can give a well-crafted product its luxury appeal. The afternoon keynote Custom Luxuries was led by Editor-in-Chief Jacqueline Terrebonne of Galerie, partner at Maison Gerard Benoist Drut, partner at
Sawyer|Berson Brian Sawyer, and Co-owner Caterina Fabrizio of Dedar in their new atelier-like space. To the guests’ advantage, the exclusive session covered one-of-a-kind fine fabrics, furnishings and designs that surmount the wildest visions of esteemed designers and their respective clientele. The DDB Fall Market 2018 closing keynote Global Luxury was hosted at Matteo Gennari’s newly minted showroom by Editor-in-Chief Erika Heet of Interiors alongside world-renowned designers and travelers Joe Nahem of Fox-Nahem, Roric Tobin of Bradfield & Tobin and Sandra Costa of Sandra Costa Design Group. From the world traveler’s perspective, the distinguished group offered guests their unique knowledge on residential and commercial designs across various climates, cultures and societies. Immediately following the keynote session Iris Dankner hosted a Holiday House: Ten Years of Designing for a Cure cocktail reception.

MDRN: INTELLIGENT LIVING ă…ĄLeading the Tech-Driven Future of Home and Furniture Design By Harry Brads
T
he official launch of Intelligent Living by MDRN, a transformable modular system for the home, by legendary interiors and futurist designer Warren Kay, offers residents an innovative lifestyle solution and raises the standard in luxury living and furniture design. Intelligent Living is a system of furniture that transforms the way we utilize traditional spaces. At the click of one button, or with a gentle pull, motorized units are activated by a custom sliding mechanism which converts a single-use space in any home into a multi-purpose, all-encompassing experience. The transformable home system seamlessly changes a living space into a bedroom, alternates between a dining room and home office, and hides closets behind a wall unit uniquely designed by you.
58 | resident.com
The modern and upscale furniture design is the finest in Italian craftsmanship enacting sustainability measures to ensure an eco-friendly and 100% emission-free process. Merging the latest technology with art and design, the transformable modular system is fully customizable with over 100 finishes, materials, fabrics, leathers and digital imaging options. Intelligent Living assures interior decorators and designers’ full creative control with the ability to optimize an entire space without compromising quality. Encompassing all the fundamentals of home life, a fully functional living room can turn into the coziest of bedrooms simply with the click of a button, or with a gentle pull. The future of real estate sees developments rising in height, rental costs rapidly increas-
ing but living spaces shrinking at the same time. Residents of tech hubs such as New York City and San Francisco encounter similar challenges to effectively live in small spaces sized at 550 square feet, more or less, with high rental costs averaging $2,300 to $3,000 per month. This challenge is tasking developers with creating multi-faceted homes with all-in-one capabilities to accommodate residents in our increasingly tech-dependent society. Intelligent Living by MDRN is the future of furniture and interior design set to revolutionize the way city dwellers live.

CALL IT AVENIR By Camille Daniels
W
hen it comes to cars it is as much about driving as it is about style and making a statement about one’s personal taste. For those drivers who are fans of not just Buick but a particular kind of Buick that makes its presence known will want to explore the premium line of Buicks called Avenir.
that embodies a quilt with a very luxurious touch. An added bonus for the seating is the surprise signature of the car’s name that awaits the driver and passenger on the headrests. The driver’s wheel is not only comfortable to grip but also reflects a sleek design with easy to navigate tools within reach of the wheel and dashboard.
The line debuted a year ago with the Buick Enclave Avenir in October 2017 followed by a successive launch of the LaCrosse Avenir in early 2018 and the latest, the Regal Avenir, revealed in October 2018. This line is first and foremost about luxury.
For the driver who is concerned about safety and technology will find the Avenir line has integrated state of the art technology, like the integration of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and on board Wi-Fi to make sure passengers and the driver are always connected. For safety the smart technology includes Forward Collision Alert, Side Blind Zone Alert and Lane Keep Assistance..
The LaCrosse sets the tone for intersecting sport and luxury. It is all in the details with a design that gives a more dramatic look. It begins with the grille providing a sportier feel. Then there is the seating design that makes one think of the best of home with its fine stitching on smooth leather
60 | resident.com
As 2018 prepares to draw to a close there is anticipation brewing for the third in line of Avenir with the Regal debuting in 2019. Like its predecessors it also offers a sportier look. This can
be found when looking at the rear of the vehicle. It offers a sportback design allowing its owner the chance to lift the back rather than opening it like a traditional car trunk. This model is also smaller, sportier offering than the others in the Avenir line. Although not a completely bespoke model, the Regal Avenir will offerall of the technology, safety features and timeless design that consumers have grown to expect from Buick. As Buick continues to be inspired by the sculptural designs of other aerodynamic technologies it’s no wonder that it continues to not only appeal to consumers in the United States but also overseas in China, particularly with younger Chinese buyers. The Buick vehicles and particularly the Avenir line selections are for those that seek an experience that is engaging over opulence no matter where they end up. buick.com/avenir

S
harks, like humans, have individual personalities, there are those that are solitary and those that are gregarious with strong social connections, fearless, brave, willing to take risks and swallow anything that gets in their way. Despite his on camera persona as a brash, opinionated, and smart as a whip competitive entrepreneur, Mr. Wonderful actually has a softer, charming role in person as a teacher and mentor. Though diplomacy may not be his strongest point on Shark Tank, his can see right to the truth and his true mission is to educate, mentor and bestow his practical magic for making money onto others. Here Resident discusses his role as a shark, latest projects, views
on marriage, and what he sees as the next big thing. What projects are you involved with now? Right now I’m an investor in 34 private companies which keeps me busy, but I’m really interested in financial literacy. I’ve been teaching a lot- at Harvard, MIT, Notre Dame, and others and what surprises me is that these students are geniuses in their fields but have no financial literacy on how to invest in the future or set aside funds for retirement. I teach people in their 20s to put money aside and by investing 10% in the market over a long period of will give them enough for retirement. I’m teaching them to buy bean stocks, even fractional shares at
50 cents per share. They can choose ETFs. Most people think they love a name like Apple or Google, all I try to help them is to diversify their investment. There’s hundreds of different ways to invest. I’m starting to teach them what it is to be an investor which is one of my big projects. To do this I developed an app called Beanstox that allows anyone to invest in fractional shares even if they are using small amounts initially. It is designed to promote long term saving and investing. What are your thoughts on bitcoin? I think everyone is figuring out that it has tremendous potential, but not if it’s unregulated. No government
resident.com | 65
cover
is going to let their currency be superseded by something they can’t collect taxes onto me the potential is very interesting, but I’m not going to touch it until it’s regulated. The market is figuring that out and a lot of people have lost their money to bitcoin. There’s no such thing as a digital product that can’t be hacked. Built by engineers and hacked by engineers. People who have had their wallets hacked lost millions. The way I look at it, if you want something to be a standard financial services product it has to be accepted by institutional investors. If you show me a more efficient way to transfer money, save it or cash it or provide an issuance of an asset and its regulated, I’m on board. Until that happens it’s going to remain fringe. What has been your favorite investment? I’ve had some really big winners. What I’ve learned over a decade is that the deals you think will be the biggest winners never are. The ones you think are marginal at best often end up being huge hits. What that teaches you is that you need a really big portfolio because you don’t know what’s going to happen. The biggest exiting company on Shark Tank was mine- Plated which was sold to Albertsons last year for $300 Million. I’ve also had Groovebook which was sold to Shutterfly. Shark Tank has been around for over a decade and the companies I’ve invested in are now starting to be acquired, it’s been a marvelous platform. The number one reason why startups fail in America in the first 3 years is that they are never able to get their customer acquisition cost below the lifetime value of the company. Shark Tank gets their product
66 | resident.com
in front of 10 million people and their customer acquisition cost is zero. This has been a huge thing for these companies and that’s why there are hundreds of millions of applications to get on the show even if they don’t get a deal. But it’s way better if they get the deal and they become part of the Shark Tank ecosphere. What are the biggest things that you look for? I like products that are not going into a really saturated market. If you come on Shark Tank with a hot sauce or ketchup I couldn’t care less. Those markets are already very established. If you have an innovation or change the market somehow, it’s a huge hit. I like companies with a great idea with great management and great execution skills. There are three things that are consistent in the companies that get funded. 1) They are able articulate the opportunity in 90 seconds or less 2) They can explain why they are the right entrepreneurs to execute a business plan and are credible 3) They know their numbers. Are there any that got away? I never cry over spilled milk, because in the next 60 seconds there’s another. I get shown 5 to 10 deals a day now, my deal flow is unbelievable. I see so many opportunities. I think forward not backwards. Shark Tank is a competition, let’s see another Shark sell their company for $300 million! How did you get started on TV? It was years ago I was asked to come on to talk about digital rights, just when pay cable was coming on. I got into a really big fight with the host. I didn’t
even see the cameras, I just thought they were wrong. I had a different opinion and it lit up the control board. And the producer asked me to come back the next day. Television is a powerful medium and a really a big part of social media. It gets chopped up and repurposed and it becomes part of brand building to support your financial interests everywhere. It’s part of my platform that I use every day to support all of my entrepreneurs. I have millions of followers and we let everyone know about our products and services. It’s a learning experience for us to see what we can measure. Do you get a long with your fellow castmates? Obviously we all respect each other but Shark Tank can be very competitive. We’re fighting over deals and investing our money that’s why it’s great television. Sharks aren’t thinking of making television they are thinking of making great deals and we don’t see the cameras anymore. It’s listening to the presenters, the valuations, does it fit in our portfolio, and most of the pitches are over an hour long and they get edited down. It keeps us really busy. Where do you see the next big investment? Even during trade wars, the world is becoming a global marketplace. What I’ve learned in the last 5 years is that for decades I’ve only invested in the US which was a huge mistake. There’s so much growth going on in other parts of the world, now I have 60% invested in the US and 40% abroad and I’ve done much better with that.
resident.com | 67
cover
I’m also interested in the technology behind exchange traded funds because if you show me a great manager, I can mimic their same performance in an ETF using scientists which will cut my costs in half. That’s why this is the fastest growing asset class- actively managed ETFs are really getting popular. That is why I invested in O’Shares ETFs a company that designs rules based exchange traded funds. I am a fan of setting the rules on financial metrics. The biggest mistake we’ve learned is using the past to predict the future. Its sticking to companies whose profits are increasing and de-levering on an individual basis that tend to do better because it’s real profit. This is the future of investing. I’d rather pay only 48 basis points (.48%) in ETF fees than 1% to a manager that may not beat the index. Every few months I rebalance my portfolio. The only decision you have to make on an annual basis is ask if my original assumption still intact with this opportunity or has it somehow changed, because things change. What do you avoid in your financial strategy? There’s this concept of generations passing wealth which is a treacherous road. It breeds entitlement which is a disease. Each time you de-risk someone’s life the outcome is often very bad. They never launch. I told my kids I will pay for their education and then you’re on your own. Good luck to you. That’s what my mother did to me and it makes you take some hard decisions in what you pursue in education and how you will invest your time and what you will spend your own money on. And when you look at multi generational outcomes most wealthy families squander their wealth within 4 generations. Do you see a political career on the horizon? I tried my hand at politics and ran for Prime Minister last year in Canada. I won in every province except Quebec because I don’t speak French. But having gone through that process I see myself now as an advisor. I know all the players both in the US and Canada. Very often it’s interesting to be in the back wings just talking about the economic outcomes. I think I have a lot to say about policy- trade and tax but you don’t have to be a politician to influence all

cover
of that. You can make your views known with a social media platform, and whether politicians listen or not it’s up to their discretion. I make my investment decisions based on policy not politics. So you can have crazy stuff happening but have great economic outcomes because the policy is very clear. We have an administration now that wants to cut taxes, cut regulations and the outcome has been great for my companies. Our cash flow has been up over 20% last year just from deregulation. There’s obviously a lot of volatility because this is not a normal administration or politics as usual. Don’t get bogged down by the Washington circus, focus on the outcome and the policy, because that’s what matters. Right now you can see the outcome with the increased market capitalization in the US. I don’t see a bubble either. Because the valuations aren’t crazy and the earnings growth has exploded while the multiples have remained relatively stagnant. Companies have increased their cash flow because regulation was a huge cost which is showing up in earnings. Are there any similarities that you see between marriage and running a company? Many see marriage as a romantic notion. It’s not. When couples form a marriage they are starting a family business. Successful marriages like companies are built on financial pillars. I’m an investor in the
wedding space and we sell gifting products and cards. I’ve learned that the majority of hiccups that occur in the first 5-7 years of marriage, which is about half, has nothing to do with infidelity. It’s primarily financial stress and incompatible objectives between couples. When you marry someone you have to know what are their financial goals. If they have no interest in saving money or don’t mind having hundreds of thousands in debt it’s going to end badly, you have to be in sync with it. Due diligence between couples shouldn’t just be based on emotional metrics, it should be about what do you see 5 years from now, what will our family look like? You have to think that through because the horrific outcome of breaking up a union in another 7 or 8 years with children is such a bad economic and emotional outcome. So I say it’s a business. You can’t maintain a lifestyle with debt. The romantic euphoria in the beginning of any relationship which makes it so magical turns into more of a maintenance mode after 3 years. Are you compatible, do you enjoy each other, and more importantly are you financially stable? The minute you start making money even when you are 16, you should be putting in 10% into long term savings, that is how you survive. Kids are really expensive and people underestimate the cost of raising a family. Even very wealthy people that I meet don’t know their burn rate and how much
they are spending to maintain their lifestyle and eat into their principal. I ask people to look at a 90 day income portfolio across all of their investments, income vs 90 days of spending and its mind blowing. People outspend their income regardless of their wealth. Very often they are burning up to 30% more than what they are making. Most people buy a lot of things they just don’t need. Anyone can cut their spending by 10% and starts with mundane things. It also teaches your children a bad precedent that you can buy anything you want at any time. It’s a disease to spend more than you make. Where do you find balance? The way I look at my day, its all about time allocationfor my investments, with my family, new ideas, and scheduling that time efficiently is the hardest job I have to try to make it work. Sometimes I’ll hit 5 cities in one day. I travel a lot. If you are an entrepreneur there is no retirement. The whole idea of making enough money is to have the financial freedom to have control over your time and find balance in your life. Freedom is the ability to choose to do the things that matter and say no to everything else. I love what I do and that’s a very valuable goal to achieve. I wish it for everyone.

DINING OUT: NYC By Hillary latos & hAYLEY LAVIN

ew York City is known for its diverse landscape of culinary offerings as well as world class entertainment venues. This fall there is plenty to discover from Michelin inspired Japanese to French Northern California cuisine, boozy brunches, and decadent cabarets. Mifune New York Named after Toshiro Mifune, the revered Japanese actor famous for his emotional portrayal of samurai warriors, MIFUNE New York is taking the NYC dining scene by storm thanks to its cast of top young chefs with extensive Michelin-starred experience. Hiroki Yoshitake, the chef/owner of Michelin-starred Sola in France who trained under Iron Chef Hiroyuki Sakai, developed the delicious menu. Helming the kitchen as head chef is Yuu Shimano, previously of Guy Savoy’s eponymous three Michelin-starred restaurant in Paris.

The menu is based on Washoku cuisine—traditional Japanese cooking that places supreme importance on the seasonal bounty of the land and sea which has been reimagined using French techniques and Michelin starred attention to detail. The minimalist space was designed by Katsunori Takeuchi and inspired by nature which sets the stage for what is to come. The jewel of the restaurant is the nine course Chef’s Tasting Menu that showcases the unparalleled talent of the kitchen and changes seasonally. The fall menu includes delicacies such as smoked Botan shrimp and caviar, truffle and mushroom chawanmushi, seafood bouillabaisse, snow crab and liver croquette, wagyu ribeye, anago sushi with a porcini and truffle croquette, and the chef’s selection of sashimi.
This sublime omakase menu is enhanced with the wine and sake pairing. For a more exotic combination try one of Shingo Gokan’s carefully curated cocktails that blend traditional cocktails with the fusion of fresh Japanese liquers and juices. 245 East 44th St. New York, NY 10017 212.986.2800 mifune-restaurant.com Paella Sundays at Boulud Sud Even if you can’t hop on a plane to Spain you can still experience the culinary flavors of the Mediterranean with Paella Sundays at Boulud Sud. Start with the French pate board for two with a selection of foie gras, duck rillettes, and charcuterie with brandied cherries. For vegetarians, there are plenty of options such as the Sonoma fig and olive tapenade over goat cheese served with buttery garlic toast, or the roasted brussels sprouts dripping with creamy California Point Reyes blue cheese. Their signature dish, the Poulet de Sonoma is marinated in herbs de Provence and Northern

erched in his chair in the corner office of his 17th floor downtown Brooklyn office, attorney Sanford Rubenstein fervently recounts nearly 50 years of cases in which he has successfully become the voice for the voiceless. He sits in front of an oversized window, boasting tremendous views of the Manhattan Bridge and the New York City skyline in the distance, with a sense of intense pride. Nearly every inch of the walls in the room is covered with individually framed photos of newspaper clippings of all his multi-million dollar settlements, him with prominent politicians, celebrities, and the everyday people he has championed for decades. Rubenstein and his team were successful in obtaining a $62 million jury verdict for a woman who suffered a bilateral amputation and hearing loss in a medical malpractice case.
Rubenstein went on to be mentored by, and work alongside, legendary civil rights lawyer Johnnie Cochran. He was also a lawyer for the Reverend Al Sharpton for almost two decades. When he isn’t fighting for the rights of others, he enjoys running--he finished the New York City Marathon– and collecting modern Haitian art, amassing one of the largest collections in the world. He is an author who in 2010 penned a book entitled The Outrageous Rubenstein, in which he writes about his experience as a media-savvy trial lawyer fighting for justice and change.
Sanford Rubenstein understands that when dealing with civil rights cases, the court of public opinion is critical. He is an expert at bringing attention to his cases, and dubs media coverage as “The trial before the trial.” He works relentlessly to ensure accurate information is relayed in his cases. Rubenstein has appeared on Good Morning America, Good Day New York, Inside Edition, Geraldo at Large, and The Montel Williams Show, to name a few. He has also
Rubenstein is a native New Yorker who came from humble beginnings, growing up in the tough Ravenswood New York Housing projects in Queens. When he was 14 years old, his family moved to the suburbs of Rockland County in upstate New York. He completed his bachelor’s degree at the State University of New York (SUNY), earned his MBA in New York City, and went to law school at night in Brooklyn while teaching public school in Harlem during the day. In 1972 he graduated from law school, wrapped up internships, and gained admission to the Bar. His career began to take off when he started hosting a show on a radio station in Brooklyn called “Know Your Rights.”
A profile of him published in the American Bar Association periodical Minority Trial Lawyer described him as follows: “Prolific, legendary, change-maker, and even outrageous are all accurate descriptions of the renowed civil rights attorney based in New York, Sanford Rubenstein. Rubenstein’s career has been punctuated by many heart-wrenching,
high-profile cases in which he has represented countless victims of wrongful acts. Yet, it is Rubenstein’s mastery of the trial outside of the courtroom–, under the scrutiny of a jury comprising the press, the public, and policymakers–that sets him apart from other civil rights attorneys.” With hard work comes recognition, and his accolades includes being crowned a Grand Marshall of the Caribbean Day Parade this year and he has hosted events side by side with Haitian Presidents due to his work for the Haitian community. He is considered to be one of the nation’s 25 top trial lawyers by the Melvin M. Belli Society of the American Trial Lawyers Association. He has been honored by the NAACP, Reverend Al Sharpton’s NAN and Black Lives Matter Greater New York. He has been named one of the top 100 litigators for New York by the American Society of Legal Advocates, and one of the top 100 civil plaintiffs lawyers in the country by the National Trial Lawyers in 2017. One of his most high-profile cases was that of Abner Louima, a Haitian immigrant. Twenty years ago, he was forcibly sodomized by a New York police officer in the bathroom of a New York City police precinct. In the predawn hours of August 9, 1997, Abner Louima was leaving a nightclub in East Flatbush where a crowd on the street had become rowdy, causing police officers to interject themselves. Things became a bit chaotic when Officer Justin Volpe was punched, mistook the assailant for Louima, a 30-year-old trained engineer in Haiti, who at the time was working as a security guard in the United States. Louima was charged with disorderly conduct, obstructing government administration, and resisting arrest.

The arresting officers beat Louima with their fists, nightsticks, and hand-held police radios on the ride to the 70th precinct police station. At the station, Volpe, brought Louima to the bathroom. Louima was handcuffed with his hands behind his back, and he was held down while Volpe sodomized him with a stick. He was left bleeding on the floor of a cell, and spent two months in a hospital after surgery for his internal injuries. Later, Volpe in court admitted to assaulting Louima. Louima’s subsequent civil suit in which he was represented by Sanford Rubenstein against the City of New York and the Police Benevolent Association, ended in a settlement of $8.75 million on July 30, 2001. The Abner Louima case is one of the most important civil rights cases in New York City history. The case was mentioned in the 1998 Amnesty International report on the United States among several other cases of police brutality, torture, and abuse. Amnesty International also uses the incident as a case study on a treatise in the campaign against torture. Mike McAlary, a New York Daily News journalist, won the 1998 Pullitzer Prize for distinguished commentary for his expose of the brutalization of Louima. In 2018 Rubenstein, who regards himself as an activist lawyer, spoke from the same spot Martin Luther King Jr. spoke at Riverside Church when he condemned Lyndon B. Johnson for the Vietnam War. Rubenstein condemned the immigration policies of the Trump administration, which he sees as one of the most significant civil rights issues facing the United States today. Keeping in line with his activism, Rubenstein attended the first Women’s March, and has spoken at numerous demonstrations on behalf of immigrants throughout New York City. In the immediate future, Rubenstein sees the midterm elections as paramount, and he hopes they will help improve the current political climate in the United States. He sees the immigration policies of the Trump administration as unjust, and he will continue to fight for change. Sanford Rubenstein shows no signs of slowing down; and he has become one of America’s best-known lawyers. He attributes his success to his ability to gain the trust of each client he works for, providing excellent legal representation, and a sincere desire to make a permanent difference one case at a time. He has helped change laws and wants to ensure that once a victim suffers an injustice he does everything in his power to ensure it does not happen to someone else. One of the most revealing indicators of Rubenstein’s passion and purpose can be found in the dedication of his book “The Outrageous Rubenstein”. He writes, “To my young grandsons, Myles and Marcus, may you grow up in a better world than the one we live in now.” rubensteinandrynecki.com

LYSSEN TO LYSS
The Key to Reaching the Influential Mom Market By Bailey Beckett Photographed By Heidi Green & Lindsay May
L
yss Stern is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of DivaMoms, one of the most influential platforms in the motherhood market. Started 14 years ago, her company now offers marketers access to moms in NYC and now across the globe through the filter of Lyss’ funny, honest and highly relatable voice. Married to her husband, Brian, for 17 years, she is the mother of three children – sons Jackson, 14 and Oliver, 11, and daughter Blake, 4 – and runs her company from her home in New York City. A native of Long Island, Lyss inherited her entrepreneurial spirit and instincts from her father, David, who started the Olde Brooklyn Soda company. She went on to college at Syracuse University, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communication and followed with a master’s in communications from NYU. Straight out of school, she landed one of the most sought-after jobs in media: working alongside legendary Manhattan publicist Peggy Siegal. She received a crash course in publicity and event planning, staging movie premieres, Broadway openings, press junkets, celebrity interviews and media campaigns for the hardest driving force in media.
Having survived one of the toughest jobs in New York, Lyss switched careers and began teaching kindergarten while simultaneously starting a family. Soon after the birth of her first son, Jackson, she felt she was losing parts of her life before becoming a mom. She wanted to feel vivacious, sexy but all she found were classes on breast-feeding and other child-rearing tips. And so, while home taking care of her then-6-month-old baby, Lyss started www. divamoms.com and began writing about her experiences. Within months, the site attracted an audience of women like her experiencing the same life circumstances. A community soon developed, and so did an opportunity; ever the entrepreneur, Lyss realized she could make a business from this and offer to her audience invitations to events – openings for stores, gyms, restaurants, Broadway-Off Broadway Shows, films, hair salons, and everything in btwn reach out to Lyss to get to her moms. Two years in, she was able to leave her job as a teacher and work on her company full-time, developing a coveted database of mothers who fit the “DivaMoms” profile. With her talent for writing and PR, she started
using local media to build a public profile for herself. She was the lifestyle correspondent for Conde Nast’s family publication Cookie. She then went on to become Editor-in-Chief of Observer Playground, a supplement published by then-owner Jared Kushner, and also continues to contribute a “SummerLYSST” column for Social Life Magazine and “FabULyssFinds” in Manhattan Family. With demand growing, Lyss was approached by local businesses and even national companies to help promote their products and brands. She’s credited for helping Random House launch E.L. James’ best-selling trilogy Fifty Shades of Grey before it became a worldwide sensation. The publisher enlisted Lyss to invite her audience to a New York event, and within two hours, the books sold out. Lyss also began hosting events, including her annual “Mom Mogul” breakfast, which has become a popular social occasion for career moms before Mother’s Day. Panelists in the past have included handbag designer Rebecca Minkoff, jewelry designer Jennifer Fisher, celebrity stylist June Ambrose, Gilt Groupe co-founder Alexandra Wilkis Wilson, Flywheel Sports creator Ruth Zukerman,

GLAM4GOOD influencer Mary Alice Stephenson and television personality Veronica Webb. Now a full-blown “mom-preneur,” Lyss has expanded her audience through media. In addition to appearing on TV and radio as a parenting expert, she has authored two books, Motherhood Is a B#TCH!10 Steps to Regaining Your Sanity, Sexiness and Inner Diva, co-authored by Sheryl Berk, and If You Give a Mom a Martini, co-authored by Julie Klappas and featuring contributions from celebrity moms like Kelly Ripa, Christie Brinkley and Jill Kargman just to name a few. And she was one of the first “influencers” to embrace social media. Every day, she posts and engages with her audience through Instagram, Facebook and other emerging platforms, as well as by text and email. Moms actually reach out to her privately. “It’s ‘Dear Abby’ but ‘Dear Lyss,’” she laughs, proudly. “All day I will get messages like, ‘Hey Lyss, where did you find your nanny? Who’s the best pediatrician? Facialist? Eyebrows? best stroller? SAT Tutor? Nutritionist” Lyss continues to further grow the DivaMoms brand through television – she is the co-creator of the NickMom short-form series “Story Time for Moms” as well as the co-creator of the Scripps Networks short-form series “Bad Moms in History.” She and her husband and sister Samantha are working on a script loosely based on her mother titled “#NANADOLL for TV (“Dark comedy at its finest!” says Lyss. “No one has met a character like #Nanadoll.”) She won't open up, however says she has some other exciting television projects in the works. In one sentence, what is DivaMoms? Lyss: We are a direct marketing company for moms everywhere. What is the broader purpose? Lyss: Companies – brands, publishers, events, products – hire DivaMoms because I have a quality audience who are influenced by what I say, approve of, suggest, comment on. My followers are known to engage and also spend. What I say is honest and relatable. Companies that hire DivaMoms – in essence, me – have to first get my seal of approval. For example, if it’s a food company, it has to be something that I’d eat first or feel comfortable serving to my kids. I get approached by everyone – fitness studios, coffee brands, tutoring services for kids, etc. They have to pass the Lyss test.
What is a DivaMom? Lyss: A woman who feels even sexier, stronger and more gorgeous after she has a baby. She is a woman who understands that loving your child doesn’t mean losing yourself, and that being a mom is the most fabulous time of your life. Why is you audience so important to brands? Lyss: Because these are direct eyeballs who are a target audience for many brands. A company can spend $100,000 on an advertising page in some magazine, and they might not get a return on investment. With DivaMoms, you get a direct targeted audience. I don’t guarantee anything, however I have enough examples that show my audience is incredibly valuable to their efforts. The mom market as a whole is a huge, audience. And they rely on your recommendations? Lyss: From an early age, I was a trend-setter. I had a good sense of what the next “thing” would be, and I still do. But now I use it for a different audience – moms like me who are raising kids but don’t want to give up on their own needs and wants. I have my pulse on what’s out there because I am out there. Every day I’m running around with three kids, and I observe and take moments in. I know instantly if it’s something my audience would be interested in knowing about. Your personality is very much a public part of you online. Where’s the separation? Lyss: I do put a lot of who I am out to my audience, but I recognize there is business time and there is personal time. The outside Lyss is more businessminded. Sure, I have fun with it and engage my followers with humorous banter, but it’s still a business. I’m a trusted conduit between marketers and a very big audience. But at the end of the day, or when my kids and family need personal time, I won’t hesitate to put down the phone and be “present” so they get the best of me. Our kids – and I think that applies to everyone in my community – come first no matter what. Through DivaMoms, I’ve built a community of women who I love to hear from. The beautiful thing about this group is that when we do come together at events, we meet and bond because we are like-minded. There is something very special about that. You do portray a very realistic window into the world of a busy mom. Lyss: I never portray anything as perfect in my life.
I don’t want anyone to ever think it is, because it’s not. I don’t have a team of people taking selfies of me around town – what I post is real. And I’m annoyed with the overuse of the “blessed” hashtag. You’re not blessed if you have a big private plane. You’re blessed if your children and family are happy and healthy. I like to keep it real. I’m married 17 years, my husband, Brian, and I have three kids and a dog. And I talk about this every day. I even wrote a book about it, Motherhood Is a B#TCH!. Not every day is rainbows and unicorns. It’s real life and it’s a roller coaster. Putting it out there online and offline lets people know that I am real. We are all going through something every day. I always say we are juggling 101 balls at once trying not to let one drop. Can moms have it all? Lyss: I really despise this question! I never portray anything as perfect in my life. I despise the word perfect. Just read my newest book Motherhood Is A B#tch (Lyss giggles). Would they ever ask a dad this question? If I have to answer the answer is everyone’s definition is different. To me, having it all is having your health. I lost my father four years ago; he was sick throughout my childhood and teen years. So, having it all to me means having a healthy family, a happy family and loving what you do. But in a practical sense, no, I don’t think you can have it all. When I started out, I thought it was possible. But when you try, you’re depleted. Balancing kids, a husband, home is enough. Throw in a career or starting a business? It’s a lot. Moms are allowed to ask for help. And that’s what I try to instill in DivaMoms: Life isn’t perfect, and you’re not a bad person or mom for admitting it. There is help. We have a thriving community of people who are experiencing what you are. How did you get your start? Lyss: My background is in public relations and special events. I worked for Peggy Siegal after college and then decided I wanted to go back to school and become a Kindergarten teacher. I went back to school, to get a Master’s in education and taught kindergarten in a private school for six years. I loved every minute of it. When I started out, there were just a few mom blogs that spoke to me and the experience I was going through. The only thing I really found was a group meeting in the back of some dingy restaurant on the Upper East Side and some woman saying, “This is how to breast-feed.” I had gone with Jackson and said, “I can’t do this.”

And then a light bulb went on in my head: There has to be something more than this. So, I created a blog called divamoms.com, and it was me talking about my experiences. It was the time of “Sex and the City” when women were celebrating being glamorous, sexy, social. Lyss: Yes, and I didn’t want to lose myself just because I was now a mom. I wanted to continue to be fabulous. I wanted to wear stilettos. I wanted to have fun with my friends and have fun with my husband. I put my thinking cap on and said, “I’m going to go for this.” Sippy cups and high heels can go hand-in-hand. High chairs and high heels are not mutually exclusive. You don’t have to have one and not the other. What was the reaction? Lyss: Well at first, everyone laughed at me. My friends had a big intervention. My husband was concerned because I never took a business class. I majored in communications at Syracuse! But I said to myself, “The worst thing that will happen is that I will fail.” Alright, so I fail. And the best-case scenario is that I will succeed. But I need to try this. In a way, you were a trailblazer. Lyss: When I started, there weren’t many mom blogs. My company grew into a business ㅇover time now almost fifteen years. It wasn’t just me taking ridiculous photos of myself because people were paying me. Companies, brands and stores got wind of me because the audience grew organically, mom-to-mom. I never advertised, and I won’t to this day. I truly believe in building the mom community through the word of mom. Marketers and publicists started asking, “Who is this Lyss? Who are these DivaMoms? We need them! We need this audience!” That’s how it started. How are you monetizing this? Lyss: Companies can buy different packages – email blasts, sponsored social media posts, events. But, again, they have to pass what I call the “Lyss Test.” It has to be something I believe in and use myself and familyrelated. Instagram @diva_moms Twitter @divamoms, website divamoms.com

KAVI Art Basel & Miami Art Week By Bennett Marcus

pectrum Kavi is headed to Miami Art Week after being invited to show her new work. Born in Bombay and raised in California, she reflects her roots in a new collection to be shown at the Spectrum Miami show in December. “I really wanted to tie in my background because it’s been such a journey trying to merge two cultures and growing up in this country where, of course, I look Indian, but I feel more American.” The autobiographical mixed-media images are paintings layered with resin. “From California, I moved to a really small city in Virginia and I just didn’t feel like I belonged anywhere, and I wanted to bring that out in the pieces. Each layer is kind of my continuous growth into the woman I am today.”

Unicorns & Murals She made unicorns out of resin, ink, and acrylic paint, and added some Indian currency and Hindi newspaper clippings that her motherin-law brought. “The unicorn to me symbolized the American dream, that you can work hard to achieve your goals, and once you’re there you can keep growing.” Kavi has a 6-foot mural on a building wall in Daytona Beach, and will soon be doing another one, a unicorn, in the city.

She always had an artistic bent, and received her first commissions (Abstract cityscapes) while in college, but as the daughter of immigrants, she considered it more of a hobby, and took a more practical route for her career. After graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University, she worked in public relations and eventually in real estate. With her commissions growing, her husband suggested that she pursue art full-time. “Now, I am focusing on getting my work shown in more galleries, and applying to international shows like Spectrum,” the artist says. “I have completely different goals this year. Last year I left real estate, I’m learning to balance my work and my family.”
Commissioned by Renaissance Marriott This year Kavi has been commissioned to create artwork for the lobby of the new Renaissance Marriott opening in Daytona Beach in 2019. “I’m really excited about this project.” She’s also flown to New York, where she created a mural for a new restaurant opening in Union Square. “They want a high-glam Indian-inspired piece,” she says. “They found me on Instagram.”

LIZZIE ASHER Philanthropist, Activist and Entrepreneur By Elizabeth Darwen

eruvian-born philanthropist, activist and entrepreneur Lizzie Asher graduated magna cum laude from Duke University and earned a degree from Harvard Law School. She practiced law at a prestigious firm in Manhattan before launching a successful beverage company, Macchu Pisco, with her sister Melanie da Trindade-Asher. Lizzie dedicates her time to personal causes that showcase her breadth of interests. She has been keenly involved with social equality issues for women and is often featured in publications aiming to discuss women’s progress and equality. At the 65th Anniversary of Harvard Law admitting women she delivered an impassioned speech to women graduates about navigating career and life. Lizzie is the co-founder of the Asher-Ezra scholarship fund that provides financial aid to underprivileged Latino children in the Bronx. She also serves as one of the youngest Board Members of the non-

However, Lizzie and Melanie did not simply want to create super-premium Piscos, Today, the company’s ethos of making all-natural spirits has steered the entrepreneurs to make a commitment to the environment and advocating for healthy farm practices in Peru that preserves the ecology of the Pisco Valley.
One such passion is the new endeavor that the company she and her sister Melanie Asher founded, Macchu Pisco, has embraced. When the company was established, Lizzie and Melanie crafted an entirely new experience for discerning drinkers as they introduced the sublime spirit of Peru to the United States, Europe and beyond. While the sisters certainly cast a reverent eye toward tradition, Macchu Pisco is singular in its modern purity and complexity, and has been regarded as nothing less than revelatory by mixologists and the press.
Lizzie takes particular pride that all the care and attention devoted to the liquid of Macch Pisco’s portfolio of brands goes hand-in-hand with the care their entire enterprise gives to its main partner, a co-op of women farmers. Raising their standard of living and winning medals across competition in the globe, has been one of her greatest successes. SAMUEL WAXMAN Cancer Research Foundation By Peter Elston
T
he Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF), an international nonprofit organization that funds cuttingedge cancer research, today announced that its founder and CEO, Samuel Wax-man, M.D. received China’s highest honor granted to a foreigner. The Vice-Premier of the People’s Republic of China, Liu He, presented the “Friendship Award,” to Dr. Waxman at a ceremony in Bei-jing over the weekend. The award was established in China in 1991, and is conferred annually to foreign civilians who have made significant contributions to the country’s “national development.” This year, more than 50 individuals from more than 20 countries were presented with the Friendship Award and included experts in healthcare, engineering, and education. More than 30 years ago, just as the United States and China governments began normalizing relations, Dr. Waxman started a collaboration with investigators at China’s cancer research universities and institutions including Shanghai Second Medical University, and Ruijin Hospital Shanghai Insti-tute of Hematology (SIH). “The SWCRF established a collaboration between my laboratory at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Shanghai-based scientists who previously had minimal contact with Western medi-cine. The SWCRF provided funding to train these scientists who then returned to China and be-came leading clinical investigators,” said Dr. Waxman. “The SWCRF also provided new laboratory equipment and materials, and upgraded the leukemia treatment facilities that became the Shang-hai Institute of Hematology.”
106 | resident.com
Dr. Waxman and China-based investigators focused on researching leukemia and would achieve two significant breakthroughs that indelibly changed the outcome for thousands of patients diagnosed annually with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), a once devastating subtype of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). “One of our first landmark achievements was reported in a western journal in 1988 and was the first example of successfully using differentiation therapy as an emerging form of treatment for some cancers that was less toxic and more effective,” said Dr. Waxman. “Differentiation therapy started in my laboratory with the idea that it was possible to reverse the abnormal growth and function of a cancer cell, an idea that was radically distinctive from the conventional wisdom and treatments at the time.”
entiation Therapy took it from proof of principle to the standard treatment for APL. It was once a fatal disease, and now more than 95 percent of patients are cured through Differentiation Therapy. “This treatment is now standard throughout the world and can be considered a major achievement resulting from Chinese investigators working in collaboration with scientists in the United States and elsewhere. Today investigators with the Shanghai Institute of Hematology continue to ex-change research with thirty investigators across the world within the SWCRF Institute Without Walls,” said Dr. Waxman.
Although Dr. Waxman was a collaborator on the research, he elected to omit his name from the journal article since he wanted it to be a first allChinese landmark article to be published. “They looked at that as a very unusual gesture of a collaborator and more as a friend,” Dr. Waxman said.
The SWCRF Institute Without Walls™ and Partnership for Aging and Cancer program are currently funding research of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with investigators at the Icahn School of Medi-cine at Mount Sinai, Shanghai Institute of Hematology, and Shenyang Pharmaceutical University. AML is the most common form of leukemia that afflicts primarily older adults. SWCRF is also collab-orating with the Shenyang Pharmaceutical University to develop a cancer drug to treat AML.
Later, Dr. Waxman and the SWCRF established its Institute Without Walls™ to drive further collaboration with scientists in China, United States and Europe. One such partnership involved a 10-year research program funded by the National Institutes of Health, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Dr. Waxman was named Honorary Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and received the Mag-nolia Award from the city of Shanghai. Currently, he is a Distinguished Service Professor, at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and continues to lead research on behalf of the SWCRF and serves as the foundation’s chief executive officer.

When the iconic brand was conceived in London in 2001 by Matthew Mellon, the purpose was to create ‘shoes that feel like sneakers’, and the business defined a new category. The concept started with the elegant, sporty lines and unique sole of the popular DOWNING loafer, followed by the soft, unstructured Basel moccasin. These styles which we now refer to as ‘the iconics’ were instantly popular and became the benchmark for everything that followed. Today the brand continues to deliver the ultimate wearing experience for men who do not wish to sacrifice style for comfort and vice versa.

something I needed to do, and now with this show it becomes an important link.” Grosz was his mentor – Cenedella came to the ASL after being expelled from the High School of Music and Art because of a satirical article he’d written about the atom bomb drills of the period. “I wasn’t going to get into a college without a high school diploma, so I went to the Art Students League,” he says. Grosz was teaching there after being expelled from Berlin by the Nazis. He and Grosz were two people in an atmosphere where they were accepted. “He could not have, let’s say, gone to Yale, because he wouldn’t have had the credentials he might need. But the place he could go was the Art Students League and that alone makes it very special for me.” In 1988, Cenedella returned to teach at the ASL, and is the George Grosz Chair at the school.

he Art Students League of New York (ASL) has mounted a three-venue exhibition of works by league teachers and students, celebrating the school’s storied 140-year history. “The Masters: Art Students League Teachers and their Students,” installed at Hirschl & Adler, 511 Projects, and at the ASL’s in-house gallery, includes paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints by major 20th century ASL master artists. Among the worldclass artists who have studied and taught at the League are Norman Rockwell, Mark Rothko, Ai Weiwei, Lee Krasner, Arshile Gorky, James Rosenquist, Robert Rauschenberg and Robert Cenedella, whose

piece in the show is a tribute to the late German George Grosz, under whom he studied at the ASL in the 1950s. The exhibit will run from December 1st – November 1st.
“George Grosz in America” Cenedella’s 1973 portrait, titled “George Grosz in America,” is the only painting he did from 1965 to 1975, a period when he had given up painting for other endeavors. “It’s also a self-portrait, even though it’s a portrait of him,” Cenedella says. “You never know quite why you do certain things, but it was
Pop Art and Andy Warhol Cenedella’s varied and colorful career included a successful poster company, and commissioned works for companies like Bacardi, Absolut Vodka and the famous mural in the restaurant Le Cirque. Known primarily as a satirical artist, Cenedella works in a range of genres, including still life, landscape, sculpture, and experimental pieces that he does in Maine where he spends his summers. “I don’t pigeonhole myself. I think as an artist you push limits in all directions.” Cenedella’s life and work was the subject of the award-winning 2015 documentary, “Art Bastard.” His 1965 show “Yes Art,” in which he threw freshly-boiled spaghetti onto a canvas, sold art by the pound, and gave out S&H green stamps, was a satirical comment on Pop Art and Andy Warhol. “It went viral. Except it wasn’t viral in those days, it was in the newspapers or on TV and the radio.” Saatchi & Saatchi In 1988, Saatchi & Saatchi removed Cenedella’s controversial painting “Presence of Man,” depicting a crucified Santa Claus, from a show at the company’s headquarters. That was the same day the ASL called and invited him to come and teach. Later, the ASL displayed that very same Santa Claus painting for a month in its 57th Street window, despite threats. “Censorship is something the League would not involve themselves in, and that’s also unique, especially today. The League is just a very special place. No one tells a teacher how to teach, and it’s very democratically run.”

DIANA HASKELL Your Best Friend’s Best Friend By w. a. muller “One of my earliest memories is walking a dog on the beach. I remember feeling the energy running up and down the leash in a circle. I did not know where the animal ended, and I began…” In 2017, dogs are cherished as children, cats are internet superstars, and people keep horses, not to ride, but just to walk in the forest with. Animals are now so seamlessly integrated into our contemporary lives that many of us forget: as recently as a generation ago, it was not so. Why the profound cultural shift? As the hyper-connected milieu of our digital world intensifies, a counter current of well-being is more prominent in our culture than ever before. Arguably, of all the gateways available, from mindfulness to digital detoxes and yoga, connection with our own animals offers us one of the most intimate, natural, and readily available avenues to open-heartedness and joyful presence. For animal relationship photographer Diana Haskell, connecting creatively with animals is more than an artistic career born out of a lifelong love of nature. It is a deeply personal path to health, whole-hearted living, and service to others. Diana’s journey resonates. Type-A, Ivy League-educated with dual Masters degrees, and climbing the corporate ladder at General Electric, her life looked nothing like she had imagined it as a young girl, who had dreamed of working with animals. Until, that is, unexpected chronic illness and years lying in bed changed everything and forced her to ask the vital question: “what now?” Over the next 20 years, Diana sought answers. Immersing herself in the transformative and healing arts, she engaged in long-term intensive studies in qigong, taiji, mediation, and other healing modalities. “I’m like Eat, Pray, Love,” she says, exuding a warm, playful laugh. “Except, I did it for much longer and much more painfully!” Diana’s journey came full circle in 2010. Already working as a professional photographer, the eureka moment came while photographing a friend with his dog. When she saw how meaningful the handmade book she had compiled for him was, she knew that her imagery had touched into something deeper. Beyond the biography of a talented fine art photographer, the Diana Haskell story is a remarkable journey resounding with personal experience and universal teachings from profound masters—human and animal alike. Ultimately, Diana’s tale, as well as the tales she helps her clients realize through her photography and accompanying narratives, bears witness to humanity’s love for animals, infusing all who come across it with joy, gratitude, and peace. dianahaskellphotography.com

HARI BEIERL Visionary Abstract Artist By angela noelle
T
ell us how you got into art I started to paint with oil colors at the age of 6 or 7. My grandfather was an art-painter. I loved my grandfather. Every year in the school holidays, I spent weeks of free time in his house, and we would paint together. We made copies of pictures from Rembrandt, Picasso and other famous artists. Since then, I’ve never stopped painting. It’s my life. Shortly after my education, I made the decision to live as a free artist. In 1993, I was 24 years old. It was a very hard life. But at this time, I worked in three ways to make it possible to get money for living: ceramic mosaics, porcelain and paintings. I am very thankful that I could do this.
114 | resident.com
Where did you study? First, I got an education as a porcelain-painter. Most of the time, I painted flowers on white cups or plates. After three years, I studied at a school for design. It was a product-design school with two possibilities: sculpture and painting. I was chosen the class of painting and drawing for three years. So, you can say my education as an artist took six years.
come from the universe, from nature, from the stars. Sometimes it’s very inspiring for me to do absolutely nothing for a few hours. It’s like a meditation before I start with a new painting. Perhaps my inspirations come from God. I also love the paintings and drawings of little children. They are so free and they don’t think twice. The lines or colors are come easily while they are painting. This is a fantastic way.
What are your inspirations? Oh, it’s difficult to say it exactly. I have been a painter for more than forty years and in this time, the inspirations have always changed. At this time, or for the last 5 years, I would say my inspirations
What form of painting would you say your art is? I love the circle, the square and the triangle. I also love red, blue and yellow. But I do not paint in the form of formalism. It is a poetic art. I want to tell little stories with my oil pictures. If you want, you
one or two shows in a year, but the last time, I took a break. I am waiting for an interesting offer from a gallery or a cool location. Many cities would be interesting for me to make an exhibition with my art. I often show my paintings in my studio. Next to my working area, I have a showroom to present my art. My studio is big enough with 500 square-meters. Perhaps the future is also to show my art on the world-wide-web. What is your next series? The last big picture I painted is the one with the title “Take a Look to the Stars. I think I will paint more in this style. I think it will be a new series, with reduced colors: white, red, black and a variety of natural brown. In these painted colors on the canvas, I make my scratchings with a pencil and I write my messages like a child.
Which series are you the most proud of ? A few years ago, I was changing my paintings. First, the canvas was completely painted with colors. Now, and for me this is a very big series, I like it to play with the natural canvas in combination with pencil and oil colors. I like this bright brown of the canvas. I am proud to found this way. Sometimes, I write my messages in the paintings. This is also new, over the last few years. Both characteristics I am very happy to discover. Which artists inspire you the most? Joan Miro, Paul Klee, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Cy Twombly. I love the work of Basquiat and Twombly! saatchiart.com/Beierl youtube.com/ watch?v=zN8OLbzpDm4&feature=youtu.be
can call it poetical formalism. But it is not enough. It is also very expressive, the signs of the brushes! It is a new way of painting. Who are your clients? People who can read my message. It is a message for change. We must make change happen. We are living on a ball in the universe. We must learn again how fragile we are and we must learn again to love nature, animals and each other. My clients are very different and come from all over the world. Have you done many art shows? I have done art shows since 1989, so for about 30 years. Most are solo-exhibitions. Normally, I do

STEFAN OSNOWSKI Carving the Light Interview By w. a. muller
I
was born in April 1970, in a town in the north of East Germany. I grew up between rivers, lakes and forests, between narrow streets and the minds of a small town, in a country surrounded by a wall. In nature, I learned what freedom meant. In the northern landscape of Germany, formed in the ice age, with rivers and wet meadows, we played in the old flooded turf hollows. Here, we built our island kingdom, as that of Robinson Crusoe, or we stole the boat from the fishermen and went up the rivers. I would take a little sketchbook to draw and paint with watercolors. I dreamed of the sea, ships and the distance, and I wanted to become a sailor. My parents also took me to the museums in Berlin and Dresden; seeing the beauty of Nefertiti and the Rubens hall at Gemäldegalerie in Dresden left such a strong impression on me that I decided I wanted to become an artist. After finishing high school, I had to commit 3 years of “honor service” in the East German army. In August 1988, I became a tank commander on a Russian tank. I was discharged from the army in late 1990 and went through the now open border

to West Germany to Kiel, to study classical archeology. Later, I moved to Greifswald, a town in the north close to the Baltic Sea, in which Caspar David Friedrich, the great romantic whom I adore, was born. At the university, I studied art under the principles of Bauhaus and the ideas of Walter Gropius, Johannes Itten and Oskar Schlemmer. After finishing the many different classical work classes, like painting, drawing, metal and wood workshops or printmaking, I focused and specialized on installation and painting as my favorite media. I was fascinated by ideas of interventions into places and space. Gordon Matta-Clark was a big inspiration at that time. Apart from those media, I developed the themes and subjects I am still very much interested in, such as space, movement and time. In addition, I studied theater pedagogic and German literature and worked at various schools, at the theater and at the university. I work as a visual artist, specializing in printmaking. The basic idea of all my artistic work is to combine digital and analog media. I work with the earliest form of printmaking: woodcutting. I’m interested
in slowing at a time, characterized by rapid frame rate. My work is about a balance between abstraction and realism. Carving along the lines, changing in width and depth, lifts out gradually only the light zones. White or black lines, thicker or thinner, forming the basic graphic pattern. The combination of wood printing (the oldest form) and digital photo (the newest form) to make a copy has a very special tension. My printing technique deviates from the norm, due to the use of a palm-size glass lens to manually rub the ink onto the paper rather than a printing press, thus preserving the apparent uniqueness of each individual item in a series. Physical contact and hand-crafting is just as much a part of the concept as gathering a theme or selecting a medium. Apart from group shows in Portugal, Brazil and Hungary, I had two bigger solo exhibitions here at my Gallery in Budapest during the last two years, showing the works of the last important projects I was working on: “Non-Places” and “In Between.” Both of these projects were inspired by texts I was reading: The essay from Marc Augé (Non-Places:
Introduction to an Anthropology of Supermodernity, 1995) and the beautiful article written by Heinrich von Kleist about the “most empty” painting “The Monk by the Sea” by Caspar David Friedrich, in which he quoted: “Since in its monotony and boundlessness it has no foreground except the frame, when viewing it, it is as if one’s eyelids had been cut away.” The two central works of these 2 projects are “Passagem 1-4” (Passage) from 2015/16, 4 enormous monochrome prints, 4 single images, snapshots of 4 seconds of a drive-by car in a city tunnel and the newest print from 2018, “Cordoama,” a large close-up image of a powerful wave crashing on the seashore towards the observer. The prints might seem nonfigurative compositions from up close. Intuitively, you start to squint, but as you take one step aside, the structure glints immediately. What you see is abstract and concrete at the same time, or somewhere in between the two. Observing the works from different distances and angles, they show various faces. This perceptive sensation is fundamental for the experience of the prints, and it’s very difficult to receive this on a computer screen or on a mobile phone. Nevertheless, I present my works also on the internet, of course, and I’ve also started to sell online at Saatchi Art Gallery. I think in our day, artists are influenced by a lot of new factors. The digital world is very powerful but also ephemeral. I view the flood of images and our desire for fast attention with very skeptical eyes, because they can boost up your ego but also blind you. I try to be not so attached in order to find clarity and to make meaningful work. I also think that in order to be creative, you simply have to move, to risk and also to make mistakes. When you stop moving, you’ll lose your freedom, and then you’re no longer an artist. After you’ve made one step, the next step reveals itself. And that’s a very beautiful process. At the moment, I’m working on a new project related to very old tiny analog photographs my grandfather took almost 100 years ago, showing landscapes, portraits or simple everyday situations of the family. Most of them are not even 5 x 5 cm in size, but they are very impressive in terms of composition and richness of details, popping up only after scanning and enlarging. Somehow, this is a journey to my roots; I know very little about my grandfather. stefanosnowski.com
